- 0:08Father, I just want to praise you and thank you
- 0:10for your faithfulness and for your word, Lord.
- 0:12We have learned quite a bit about your word,
- 0:15and we are asking that you would help us to be
- 0:19doers. Show us how important it is to do what
- 0:23you command, not just to hear it. and the reality
- 0:27of the attitude of the heart of obedience is
- 0:29seen in how we actually do your word. May you
- 0:33be honored and glorified. May the full counsel
- 0:36of your word be taught today, and may we as your
- 0:38people rightly divide it for your glory. We do
- 0:41praise you and we thank you for your faithfulness.
- 0:42In Jesus' name, amen. James chapter 1. James,
- 0:48a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,
- 0:50to the twelve tribes in the dispersion. Greetings.
- 0:56Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet
- 0:59trials of various kinds, for you know that the
- 1:02testing of your faith produces steadfastness,
- 1:04and let steadfastness have its full effect that
- 1:07you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
- 1:11If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God,
- 1:14who gives generously to all without reproach,
- 1:17and it will be given him. But let him ask in
- 1:20faith with no doubting. For the one who doubts
- 1:24is like the wave of the sea that is driven and
- 1:27tossed by the wind. For that person must not
- 1:31suppose that he will receive anything from the
- 1:34Lord. He is a double -minded man and unstable
- 1:36in all his ways. Let the lowly brother boast
- 1:39in his exaltation. And let the rich in his humiliation.
- 1:43Because like a flower of the grass he will pass
- 1:46away. For the sun rises with its scorching heat
- 1:49and withers the grass. falls and its beauty perishes
- 1:55so also will the rich man fade away in the midst
- 2:00of his pursuits blessed is the man who remains
- 2:03steadfast under trial for when he has stood the
- 2:08test he will receive the crown of life which
- 2:11God has promised to those who love him. Let no
- 2:14one say when he is tempted, I'm being tempted
- 2:17by God, for God cannot be tempted with evil and
- 2:20he himself tempts no one. But each person is
- 2:23tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own
- 2:27desire. Then desire, when it is conceived, gives
- 2:31birth to sin and sin, when it is fully grown,
- 2:33gives birth, brings forth death. Do not be deceived,
- 2:37my brothers. My beloved brothers, every good
- 2:40gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming
- 2:44down from the Father of lights, with whom there
- 2:46is no variation and no shadow due to change.
- 2:51Of his own will he brought us forth by the word
- 2:54of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits
- 2:57of his creation. Know this, my beloved. My beloved
- 3:01brothers, let every person be quick to hear,
- 3:04slow to speak, slow to anger. For the anger of
- 3:08a man does not produce the righteousness of God.
- 3:11Therefore, put away all filthiness and rampant
- 3:15wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted
- 3:18word which is able to save your souls. Be doers
- 3:22of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
- 3:26For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not
- 3:29a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at
- 3:32his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at
- 3:36himself and goes away and at once forgets what
- 3:39he looks like. But the one who looks into the
- 3:43perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres,
- 3:47being no hearer, who forgets, but a doer who
- 3:51acts, he will be blessed in his doing. If anyone
- 3:55thinks he is religious and does not bridle his
- 3:58tongue, but deceives his heart, this person's
- 4:00religion is worthless. Religion that is pure
- 4:03and undefiled before God the Father is this,
- 4:06to visit orphans and widows in their affliction
- 4:09and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
- 4:14There's a lot of practicality here. And the most
- 4:19important part of the reality of this chapter
- 4:22is verse 27. So we're going to be addressing
- 4:26those things. But before we get to the heart
- 4:29of the message, which is 19 through 27, I don't
- 4:33want to do a disjustice by just going through,
- 4:35even though we could, and expound on just 19
- 4:41through 27. I think it'd be important. Do we
- 4:48got a duck? I'm hearing, I'm like. It was a good
- 4:56time to be funny. It was a good spot. All right.
- 4:59One of the most important things we need to do
- 5:01is we have to make sure that we are thinking
- 5:04through these kind of practical things in here
- 5:07and then really get into what James is saying.
- 5:11Okay. First thing I want us to notice is in verse
- 5:14one, the dispersion. This is during the time
- 5:19when the Christians in Jerusalem were scattered.
- 5:22James is the brother of Jesus. He is the head
- 5:25of the church. He's the apostle that's overseeing
- 5:28the church in Jerusalem. That's his responsibility.
- 5:31And he is sending this letter out to the brothers
- 5:35who were in Jerusalem. And they have been now
- 5:38dispersed across the area. And how would you
- 5:43encourage the brothers to hold? firm to the faith
- 5:48to not let the trial and the testing that has
- 5:52been placed on them to discourage them but to
- 5:55hold truth to the word and do it and so what
- 5:58he does is he starts it off quite frankly okay
- 6:02i want you to pay attention number one notice
- 6:08what it says in verse two For you know that the
- 6:11testing of your faith produces. Why does God
- 6:14allow suffering in your life? Why do we go through
- 6:19difficulty? We go through difficulty because
- 6:22he wants our faith to produce steadfastness.
- 6:26The steadfastness is the willing to stand under
- 6:29the pressure regardless of what's happening in
- 6:32your life. That is one of the most difficult
- 6:34things for American Christians to do. is when
- 6:38things get difficult we have a tendency to run
- 6:41away from God abandon the church not really stand
- 6:46for the faith because life's too difficult we
- 6:49have no idea what difficulty is when we look
- 6:53at the reality of faith We have a difficulty
- 6:56or an idea of what it means to live life, right?
- 6:59Like we have loved ones that get sick and die
- 7:01and we go through our own sufferings and pains
- 7:04and stuff like that. It's everyday life. Everybody
- 7:06in the world goes through that. But this is a
- 7:09specific testing. Persecution. So why does God
- 7:16allow or why does God test us? He is testing
- 7:19our faith so that it produces steadfastness.
- 7:22And notice what it says. When steadfastness has
- 7:25its full effect in your life, you are perfected
- 7:29and complete, lacking nothing. I kind of like
- 7:33that. He's telling you what the answer to a victorious
- 7:37Christian life looks like. The second is ask
- 7:41in faith. with no doubting. Now, there are many
- 7:45brothers and sisters, I'm sure, throughout Christendom
- 7:50that would state that we can ask God for whatever
- 7:52we want. As long as we don't doubt, we'll get
- 7:55it. But that's not what this means. It doesn't
- 7:58mean that if I want this, I can believe God and
- 8:01I'll have it. And that is one of the main issues,
- 8:03I think, that we've experienced quite a bit with
- 8:06the prosperity gospel folks. What does it mean
- 8:11that we should ask in faith with no doubting?
- 8:14What does it say in verse 5? If any of you lacks
- 8:20wisdom, what is wisdom? It is the knowledge and
- 8:25the truth of God applied. If anyone is lacking
- 8:28wisdom, let him ask God who gives generously
- 8:33to all without reproach. If you want the wisdom
- 8:36of God, God will give it to you. What else is
- 8:40the reality of this issue concerning faith? But
- 8:43let him ask in faith. What is faith? Being sure
- 8:46of what you hope for and the evidence of what
- 8:48you don't see. What do we know? We know that
- 8:50the word of God is God's promises in writing.
- 8:55His name is on his promises. His word is truth.
- 9:00What do we ask in faith? Faith is not believing
- 9:04that I will receive something. Faith is knowing
- 9:06the truth of the word of God and not doubting
- 9:10that God's word is true. Can you imagine how
- 9:14much more effective as believers we would be
- 9:17if we literally walked in the truth of the word
- 9:20and believed what God said is true, not what
- 9:23we think God will give me. God has promised that
- 9:29if I walk by faith, live in faith, that my faith
- 9:32will produce steadfastness. And when it is completed
- 9:35and as it reaches full effect, I will lack nothing.
- 9:39And so if I need the wisdom of God, that's the
- 9:42application of the knowledge of God lived in
- 9:45life, then I can ask him and I will live rightly,
- 9:50even under pressure. Number three, look what
- 9:57he says here. Why does he deal with these Two
- 10:00particular types of people in the church. I want
- 10:03you to notice something. In the church, there's
- 10:06no middle class. He just calls the lowly and
- 10:10the rich. Because everyone who's not rich is
- 10:13lowly. It's kind of interesting, I just say.
- 10:17And I'll be like, where's the middle class in
- 10:19that, whether it's not one? So most countries
- 10:22don't have middle class. Most countries just
- 10:25have lowly, poor, and rich. We're the only, we're
- 10:28one of very few countries that has middle class.
- 10:30So just saying on a modern day term. Anyway,
- 10:34what is he saying here? Let the lowly brother
- 10:37boast in his exaltation. What does God promise
- 10:41the poor? Blessed are the poor for they shall,
- 10:45what? Inherit the kingdom of God. Is there any
- 10:53kingdom, anything greater than that? No. We are
- 11:02receiving an inheritance as the children of God,
- 11:06of a kingdom that the world would probably do
- 11:10anything to get, but it can't. That's the reality.
- 11:14So we boast in our exaltation. We've been exalted
- 11:19from lowliness. To what? To kingship. We can
- 11:26live as kings with the king of kings and the
- 11:30Lord of lords. But look what he says to the rich.
- 11:33And the rich in his humiliation. Because why?
- 11:39What does the rich pursue on earth? What happens
- 11:44when the rich die? Do they take what they pursued
- 11:48with them? And that's exactly what he says here.
- 11:51So also will the rich man fade away in the midst
- 11:54of his pursuits. It doesn't mean that you can't
- 11:57want or it can't work to be wealthy here, but
- 12:02that your pursuits aren't defining you. What's
- 12:05the opposite of reaching out for your pursuits?
- 12:09Live in humility. Live as a slave. Not as a person
- 12:15who owns slaves. That's really what he's saying
- 12:19here. Live in humiliation. And that's quite difficult
- 12:25to be a doer. As a poor man, to live in our exaltation
- 12:29is not to live in bragging like we've done something,
- 12:31but to live in such a way that we exude. Or we
- 12:37show, reflect the goodness of our God because
- 12:40now I am in the same position as everyone else
- 12:44when it comes to the kingdom. But to the rich,
- 12:46in the same way that the poor serve and slave
- 12:51and work for the rich, the rich should be serving
- 12:54and slaving to take care of the poor. We read
- 12:58this later on. Number four. But each person is
- 13:03tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own
- 13:05desire. So here's, I was watching, my wife and
- 13:08I were watching a little thing on TV where a
- 13:11gentleman stated that Satan is the ruler of the
- 13:15world and he is controlling everything. That
- 13:19all the bad things that happen in your life are
- 13:21Satan's fault. Here's a problem. James chapter
- 13:261. Is it really? What's really going on here?
- 13:33Well, it's because we're selfish. Each person
- 13:38is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his
- 13:42own desires. The reality of sin in your life
- 13:47is not Satan's fault. He didn't put anything
- 13:49in your life that wasn't already there. The sinful
- 13:52world knows how to tempt. It knows how to put
- 13:56stuff in your face. Bulletin boards. commercials.
- 14:01Lord knows today when you watch the Super Bowl,
- 14:04you're going to be watching Bunny. Please don't.
- 14:10That's crazy. But it's the reality. And people
- 14:15will go, I want to know what that's about. And
- 14:19what happens? They get lured and enticed by their
- 14:21own desire of curiosity. I'm like, I'm not even
- 14:25going to watch it. I'll be home watching something
- 14:29else. No Super Bowl for me. Because if that's
- 14:33what you're going to continue to produce and
- 14:35offer to the people that watch it, especially
- 14:37all the little kids, I'm really having a hard
- 14:41time with them. What does it produce in the heart
- 14:44and the mind of any individual? You can imagine.
- 14:49So each person in reality is... tempted when
- 14:52he is lured and enticed by his own desire and
- 14:55desire when it gives when it is full grown gives
- 14:58birth to sin and sin gives birth to death it's
- 15:04no one's fault but yours is what james is saying
- 15:07number five what's the reality of the work of
- 15:14god The reality of the work of God. Every good
- 15:17gift. The fact that we're saved. That God saves
- 15:20us. That he gives us the perfect gift of heaven.
- 15:25Salvation. Done perfectly through a perfect God.
- 15:29Given to an imperfect people by which he will
- 15:32make perfect. He has done it by his own will.
- 15:38See that kind of throws a monkey wrench in the
- 15:40free will argument. I could go through. A whole
- 15:46mess of scripture. But the reality is, even in
- 15:50James chapter 1, verse 18, he tells you, your
- 16:00very salvation, your very being is of his own
- 16:04will, which he brought forth by the word of truth.
- 16:07Who's the word of truth? Jesus. And he completes
- 16:14the statement that we should be a kind of first
- 16:19fruits of his creatures. The first fruits of
- 16:23his creatures, the ones who reflect the righteousness
- 16:26and holiness of a living God. How do we do that?
- 16:30How do we reflect? How do we show that we're
- 16:33the first fruits of his creatures? Number six.
- 16:41To do the word requires that the word be implanted
- 16:45in you. The word of God must be implanted in
- 16:50you. Hebrews 10, 16. This is the covenant, which
- 16:55that I make with them after those days, declares
- 16:59the Lord. I will put my laws on their hearts
- 17:04and write them on their minds. Who gives you
- 17:08the word? God. Who puts the word in you? God.
- 17:13So when he says that the word has been implanted
- 17:16in you, it's because he put it there. God put
- 17:21his word in you. Very interesting, isn't it?
- 17:25So James 1, 19 through 21. Now, know this, my
- 17:30beloved brothers. Let every person be quick to
- 17:33hear, slow to speak, slow to anger. Very important.
- 17:40You're going to find out that the quickest way
- 17:41to know if somebody is of God and who's not of
- 17:43God is their mouth. Because out of the abundance
- 17:49of the heart, the mouth speaks. Anger of man
- 17:53does not produce the righteousness of God. You
- 17:58can see who is of God and who's not by how he
- 18:01or she speaks in anger because she Or he feels
- 18:08like his rights or her rights have been violated.
- 18:12How dare you do that to me? My rights are violated.
- 18:20And we get angry. I deserve better than that.
- 18:24In some cases, that'd be true. But the reality
- 18:28is, because we think our rights have been violated
- 18:33or they have been violated, The Bible says that
- 18:36the anger of man does not produce the righteousness
- 18:40of God. Well, what does produce the righteousness
- 18:47of God? The Spirit of God. So in your anger,
- 18:51do not sin, the Scripture says. Not God's anger.
- 18:55God's anger is good and righteous and true. That's
- 19:01the reality. Ben, can you give Ronald Goetz a
- 19:09call, please? Thank you. Therefore, put away
- 19:17all filthiness and rampant wickedness. Put all
- 19:22of that away. Why? It's the opposite. Anger produces
- 19:26filthiness and rampant wickedness. Put it away,
- 19:30he says. And look, what is the answer to putting
- 19:35away filthiness and rampant wickedness? And receive
- 19:39the meekness, the implanted word. Receive with
- 19:46meekness the implanted word. It's the word of
- 19:49God that keeps us right. Which is able to save
- 19:53your souls. Remember the word that God put in
- 19:57you? So. The seven. How do we do this? To do
- 20:08the word requires that you not only hear, but
- 20:11act on it. To do the word requires that you not
- 20:17only hear, but act on it. You must hear the word
- 20:22and do it, not just hear it. Why? Deuteronomy
- 20:268 .1. The whole commandment that I command you
- 20:29today, forget the V, I forgot to delete it. That
- 20:34you, not view, shall be careful to do. You shall
- 20:40be careful to do that you may live and multiply
- 20:45and go in and possess the land the Lord swore
- 20:49to give your forefathers. Do you hear that? There's
- 20:52all kinds of applications here. We're not going
- 20:54to get on the tangent. The only way that God...
- 21:00That the people of Israel were to receive the
- 21:03land as if they were being obedient. If they
- 21:06were doing the word carefully. It's his land.
- 21:12Why? But he's telling you that you must be careful
- 21:16to do. James 22 through 25. But be doers of the
- 21:24word. Pretty simple, isn't it? Be doers. Not
- 21:29hearers only. Deceiving yourself. Be doers of
- 21:34the word. Be the one that is actively doing.
- 21:40Not hearers only. Deceiving yourself. You hear
- 21:43the word. And this happens many times in churches
- 21:46every Sunday. People come in. They don't bring
- 21:51their Bibles. They sit there. They hear a message.
- 21:56They hear a word. From the Lord. No wonder no
- 22:00one can discern what the word of the Lord is.
- 22:02Because they don't know the word. They'll be
- 22:04like, the preacher gave the word of the Lord
- 22:06today. I'm going to hear that. Okay. No. We must
- 22:13hear the word of God. Because if we just hear
- 22:18only, we deceive ourselves. How is this deception?
- 22:22The reality is. We deceive ourselves because
- 22:25we're not living out what was given to us. For
- 22:30if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer,
- 22:33he is like a man who looks intently at his natural
- 22:36face in a mirror. Oh, can you imagine what it
- 22:41would be like if you woke up in the morning,
- 22:43looked at your face, and were like, oh, how are
- 22:45you? Walked away and go, I forgot what I look
- 22:49like. Kind of weird. But that's what it's like.
- 22:55For he looks at himself and goes away at once
- 22:59and forgets what he looks like. He doesn't even
- 23:02reflect anything of what he is naturally. So
- 23:08what's the point? That we as believers naturally
- 23:11should be reflecting Christ. That's what it says
- 23:15in verse 25. But the one who looks into the perfect
- 23:19law. The one who... digs into the law of God,
- 23:24the law of liberty. The law of God is freedom
- 23:29for a believer. It's not the school teacher who
- 23:34whips us. It's a school teacher who whips us
- 23:37when we aren't living, when we aren't saved,
- 23:42when we don't know Christ. The law reveals to
- 23:45us our sinfulness, but now that we are in Christ,
- 23:48the law reveals to us our righteousness. Christ.
- 23:54And so the law of liberty. And what does the
- 23:58law do? If we persevere, being no hearer who
- 24:05forgets but a doer who acts, we'll be blessed.
- 24:08And that's exactly what God was saying to them.
- 24:11If you carefully do what I command you, I will
- 24:15bless you. You want blessings? You want to really
- 24:19truly know what it means to be blessed by God?
- 24:21do his word. So pure religion is to be a doer
- 24:30of the word. You guys ever watch that little
- 24:33video? I did this with John and Nick this week.
- 24:36After we went through line by line, they were
- 24:41like, yeah, that's a really bad video. That is
- 24:45a really bad video. You ever seen that video
- 24:49where it says Jesus is greater than religion
- 24:52or Jesus hates religion video? You guys ever
- 24:55watch that on YouTube? I should play it for you.
- 24:58I really am not. I can't. It's totally heretical.
- 25:03I can do it on Wednesday because then I can teach
- 25:05you why it's so bad. You can't even get past
- 25:09the first five words. And you go, whoa. It's
- 25:13extremely deceptive. That being said. God doesn't
- 25:17hate religion. That's a lie. God loves religion.
- 25:23God loves his religion. God hates man's religion.
- 25:29But Christianity is not man's religion. It's
- 25:32God's religion. Christianity or religion is not
- 25:36some man -made institution. Religion in reality,
- 25:44God's religion, Is what we should be living.
- 25:47But man has corrupted God's religion. And as
- 25:51a result of a corrupted religion. We come up
- 25:56with all kinds of other ideas. James chapter
- 26:004 verse 17. So whoever knows the right thing
- 26:05to do. And fails to do it. For him it is sin.
- 26:12It is sin. God loves. His religion. And Christianity
- 26:18is a religion. It's a life practice. It's what
- 26:24we do. So if anyone thinks he is religious and
- 26:29does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart,
- 26:32this person's religion is worthless. Remember
- 26:34I told you earlier that the quickest way to know
- 26:37if someone is truly a believer is to listen to
- 26:40their language. listen to what they say now that
- 26:48doesn't mean that we're not going to mess up
- 26:50i mess up we all mess up but the reality of consistent
- 26:55christian living is that we are putting a bridle
- 26:59we are we are being careful about what we say
- 27:03not going and destroying everyone and everyone
- 27:06and everything that disagrees with me because
- 27:09my truth is my truth and your truth is your truth
- 27:11and after all You don't have a right to mess
- 27:14with my truth. But as I said before, God could
- 27:18care less about your truth. And he really doesn't
- 27:21care about your opinion. You're like, oh, that's
- 27:24harsh. But that's true. Because if God was worried
- 27:26about everybody's opinion, he'd never get anything
- 27:28done. After all, I'm not going to say everybody
- 27:38has an opinion. All right. But notice what James
- 27:43says here. Religion. Life practice. Doing. That's
- 27:50what this word religion means. A doer of the
- 27:54faith. Religion that is pure and undefiled before
- 27:58God the Father is this. Visit the orphans and
- 28:03widows in their affliction. And to keep oneself
- 28:06unstained from the world. Now. Interesting enough,
- 28:12I was watching another interview this week of
- 28:16an Anglican bishop. Oh, thank God I remembered
- 28:20it in second service because the first service
- 28:21I totally forgot. It's the bishop. I was in Bible
- 28:25study. An Anglican bishop. And he is the bishop
- 28:32of the Anglican church in all of Jerusalem. He
- 28:36is the top -notch guy in the Anglican church.
- 28:42And what he shared concerning the Christians
- 28:44there would absolutely horrify you. They are
- 28:52going hungry in Israel. And his statement is,
- 29:00why are the Christians so quick to give money
- 29:03to Israel but not give money to their own family?
- 29:07Who's suffering and hurting. Why hasn't... Anybody
- 29:12talked about this? Because the Christian will
- 29:17always be hated. If they hated me, they will
- 29:22hate you also. Why do I say that? Because here,
- 29:29what we see in James' statement, and the same
- 29:34thing was happening then that's happening now,
- 29:36is that the real religion that is pure and undefiled
- 29:43of God the Father is to visit the orphans and
- 29:47widows in their affliction and to keep oneself
- 29:49unstained from the world. It is to take care
- 29:52of the marginalized family. He's speaking to
- 29:57the brothers and sisters that have been dispersed
- 30:01who now don't have children, who now don't have
- 30:05parents and women who now don't have husbands
- 30:08who can take care of them. This isn't the orphans
- 30:12and widows in all of Jerusalem because not all
- 30:14of the children and all of the widows have lost
- 30:18their loved ones. These are the persecuted Christians
- 30:22who have lost parents and husbands. And we know
- 30:28this to be true because Jesus says, they will
- 30:31know you are my disciples if you have love one
- 30:34for another. And we know this also because Jesus
- 30:38tells us again what the reality of good, true
- 30:41biblical religion looks like. Lord, when did
- 30:48we see you hungry and feed you and thirsty and
- 30:52give you drink and naked and clothe you and sick
- 30:56and care for you? When you did it for the least
- 30:59of these, you did it for me. Good, true biblical
- 31:03Christianity is taking care of the marginalized
- 31:05in God's house so that we can then go outside
- 31:09of the house to take care of the marginalized
- 31:11there. We're quick to take care of those outside
- 31:14of the house, but very slow to take care of those
- 31:17in. I can tell you, and I'm very thankful for
- 31:20our church, that we do work at this. We take
- 31:23good care of our family. And I give you all kudos
- 31:28for that. I am grateful for you. In that you
- 31:32are reflecting this truth. You are living pure
- 31:35religion. The hardest though, for all Christians,
- 31:40is holiness. To keep oneself unstained from the
- 31:46world. Care for those who cannot care for themselves
- 31:50and live rightly. That's the hardest. But that's
- 31:57real what true biblical pure religion looks like.
- 32:00So God doesn't hate religion. Jesus doesn't hate
- 32:02religion. He commands you to live it. And that
- 32:07is his expectation of you and his imperative
- 32:10for you. To do the word. Care for the marginalized.
- 32:19Live holy. Father, I want to thank you so much
- 32:24for your goodness. Thank you for your word. Thank
- 32:27you for your faithfulness. Thank you that you,
- 32:30Holy Spirit, live in us and that we can be guided
- 32:33through the truth as you illuminate us to the
- 32:35truth of the word by the very work and ministry
- 32:38you do in our lives, sanctifying us and conforming
- 32:41us into the image of your son, Lord Jesus. We
- 32:43thank you that you have given your life as a
- 32:46ransom for many. Bless your people and bless
- 32:50us as we learn to live your word. In Jesus' name,
- 32:54amen.
