- 0:00Leslie Nunnery: Have you ever looked at something that isn't
- 0:02Leslie Nunnery: working in your homeschool and immediately thought, I
- 0:04Leslie Nunnery: need to fix this. I need a new
- 0:07Leslie Nunnery: schedule, a different curriculum. Maybe we need to
- 0:10Leslie Nunnery: drop the co op or add one. I
- 0:12Leslie Nunnery: just need to do something. But what if
- 0:16Leslie Nunnery: the problem isn't actually what you're doing? What
- 0:19Leslie Nunnery: if you've skipped the three things that should
- 0:21Leslie Nunnery: come before the doing? Today, David and I
- 0:25Leslie Nunnery: are going to give you a simple framework,
- 0:27Leslie Nunnery: believe, think, feel, do, that can completely change
- 0:31Leslie Nunnery: the way you make decisions in your homeschool.
- 0:34Leslie Nunnery: And if things aren't looking quite as shiny
- 0:36Leslie Nunnery: as they did at the beginning of the
- 0:38Leslie Nunnery: year, this may be exactly the reset you
- 0:41Leslie Nunnery: need. Welcome to the Teach Them Diligently podcast.
- 0:46Leslie Nunnery: I'm Leslie Nunnery, cofounder of Teach Them Diligently,
- 0:49Leslie Nunnery: and I am so glad that you've chosen
- 0:52Leslie Nunnery: to join me here today. Around here, we
- 0:55Leslie Nunnery: talk a lot about heart school, a biblical
- 0:57Leslie Nunnery: approach to homeschooling and family life that starts
- 1:00Leslie Nunnery: with who God is, who he has called
- 1:02Leslie Nunnery: you to be, and how he wants to
- 1:05Leslie Nunnery: use the ordinary days with your children for
- 1:07Leslie Nunnery: something much bigger than just academics. Most people
- 1:11Leslie Nunnery: talk about homeschooling simply in terms of reaching
- 1:14Leslie Nunnery: your child's mind. We believe the heart is
- 1:17Leslie Nunnery: the real target. So each week, we're going
- 1:19Leslie Nunnery: to talk about what it looks like to
- 1:21Leslie Nunnery: reach their hearts, disciple them well, prepare them
- 1:25Leslie Nunnery: for what God has in store for them,
- 1:27Leslie Nunnery: and faithfully use the days God has given
- 1:29Leslie Nunnery: us with them. Hit the subscribe button so
- 1:32Leslie Nunnery: you don't miss an episode, and then join
- 1:35Leslie Nunnery: us as we jump into today's conversation. We
- 1:41Leslie Nunnery: have gotten to that time of the school
- 1:43Leslie Nunnery: year where I think for a lot of
- 1:46Leslie Nunnery: us, we find that our shiny, hopeful, wonderful
- 1:50Leslie Nunnery: plans don't look quite so shiny and hopeful
- 1:52Leslie Nunnery: anymore. We're starting to see where some things
- 1:55Leslie Nunnery: don't work quite the way that we envision
- 1:57Leslie Nunnery: they would. I remember so many times I
- 2:00Leslie Nunnery: would get to this first of October type
- 2:03Leslie Nunnery: time frame and be a little bit frustrated
- 2:06Leslie Nunnery: because my grand plans, my big ideas for
- 2:09Leslie Nunnery: the year just don't quite look as shiny
- 2:12Leslie Nunnery: as, you know, in July when I was
- 2:14Leslie Nunnery: coming up with all of them. So if
- 2:16Leslie Nunnery: that is where you are today, stick around
- 2:19Leslie Nunnery: because we are going to talk about how
- 2:21Leslie Nunnery: to get back on track, and it may
- 2:24Leslie Nunnery: come back to doing something that you skipped
- 2:27Leslie Nunnery: over at the very beginning that can make
- 2:29Leslie Nunnery: all the difference in the world.
- 2:31David Nunnery: So we've gotten to this point. I mean,
- 2:32David Nunnery: it is it is... I mean, fall has
- 2:34David Nunnery: arrived. And, you know, for all those that
- 2:37David Nunnery: live up north, maybe what you don't understand
- 2:40David Nunnery: is is that southerners have a very complicated
- 2:43David Nunnery: relationship with the summer. And so we love
- 2:47David Nunnery: the summer. We actually really love the summer.
- 2:49David Nunnery: But when we get into, like, late August
- 2:52David Nunnery: and early September when it's still ninety degrees
- 2:55David Nunnery: outside, we're really, really looking forward to fall.
- 2:59David Nunnery: We're really just hating life. And so I
- 3:02David Nunnery: would say that today is like a celebration.
- 3:05David Nunnery: It's like, we we have marked something off.
- 3:07David Nunnery: I pulled out the hoodie for all those
- 3:10David Nunnery: that have, are are are watching on YouTube,
- 3:14David Nunnery: and we are now getting to... You're wearing
- 3:16David Nunnery: a sweater yesterday. Yes. I know. So this
- 3:18David Nunnery: is a moment that... If you're living in
- 3:20David Nunnery: the south, this is a moment.
- 3:21Leslie Nunnery: Yeah. But I think it's teasing us. Yeah.
- 3:23Leslie Nunnery: That's it. It's this, this deceptive fall that
- 3:26Leslie Nunnery: we're getting now. We'll go back to to
- 3:28Leslie Nunnery: hot and and bothered soon, I'm afraid.
- 3:31David Nunnery: So... And as you were talking about, that
- 3:33David Nunnery: also probably marks a point that a lot
- 3:36David Nunnery: of families start to get into where they
- 3:39David Nunnery: have started the year with all of this
- 3:41David Nunnery: hope, and they still have a lot of
- 3:43David Nunnery: hope. They're still probably enjoying, but some of
- 3:46David Nunnery: the things are starting to come out that
- 3:48David Nunnery: aren't working as nearly as well. And so
- 3:51David Nunnery: there are some out there that are, like,
- 3:53David Nunnery: thinking, man, I need to scrap everything and
- 3:56David Nunnery: start over. Let me go buy curriculum. And
- 3:59David Nunnery: there's others that are out there like, man,
- 4:00David Nunnery: I'm having a lot of trouble in this
- 4:02David Nunnery: one particular area. Everything else is going good.
- 4:05David Nunnery: This one particular area, I'm struggling.
- 4:08Leslie Nunnery: Yeah. Yeah. Well, I remember, you know, to
- 4:10Leslie Nunnery: those of you who have listened in quite
- 4:12Leslie Nunnery: a bit or know our family, we are
- 4:13Leslie Nunnery: done. We are on the other side of
- 4:15Leslie Nunnery: homeschooling. Our... All of our kids have graduated
- 4:17Leslie Nunnery: and launched. But I remember a lot of
- 4:20Leslie Nunnery: times where we get to an evening, David
- 4:24Leslie Nunnery: and I are talking after the kids go
- 4:25Leslie Nunnery: to bed, and I am just ready to
- 4:28Leslie Nunnery: scrap it all. I am so frustrated, so
- 4:33Leslie Nunnery: done. And and really, I think disappointed is
- 4:38Leslie Nunnery: the right answer there because I was so
- 4:41Leslie Nunnery: disappointed that things weren't going the way that
- 4:43Leslie Nunnery: I envisioned it. I didn't have that beautiful
- 4:47Leslie Nunnery: day situation that I was sure that I
- 4:49Leslie Nunnery: was gonna have. And so me not always
- 4:54Leslie Nunnery: being the most rational in that state of
- 4:56Leslie Nunnery: mind would be very eager to just upend
- 4:59Leslie Nunnery: everything. And I'm so grateful that as I
- 5:01Leslie Nunnery: would talk to David, he would kind of
- 5:03Leslie Nunnery: remind me of a lot of things that
- 5:05Leslie Nunnery: would ground me, help me think of things
- 5:08Leslie Nunnery: in a much more rational level, biblical way.
- 5:12Leslie Nunnery: And it kept us a lot of times
- 5:14Leslie Nunnery: from making really rash decisions that probably would
- 5:18Leslie Nunnery: have unnecessarily upset everything that we were going
- 5:21Leslie Nunnery: for and really, really mess with the kids'
- 5:24Leslie Nunnery: minds as we were changing everything unnecessarily. So
- 5:27Leslie Nunnery: today, that's what we really wanna talk about
- 5:29Leslie Nunnery: is when you get to that point where
- 5:32Leslie Nunnery: you just feel like everything is not looking
- 5:35Leslie Nunnery: the way that you wanted to, what do
- 5:37Leslie Nunnery: you do to salvage and and to realign
- 5:41Leslie Nunnery: with what God has called you to do
- 5:43Leslie Nunnery: if you started to drift a little bit
- 5:44Leslie Nunnery: off of that?
- 5:45David Nunnery: Well... And so one of the more difficult
- 5:48David Nunnery: elements of this particular stage... I mean, if
- 5:50David Nunnery: you start... You started the year and you're
- 5:53David Nunnery: thinking, man, this is gonna be awesome. This
- 5:55David Nunnery: is gonna be wonderful. And then things aren't
- 5:57David Nunnery: going exactly the way that you planned or
- 5:59David Nunnery: there's just a little something in the plan.
- 6:01David Nunnery: Everything else is going well. There's a little
- 6:03David Nunnery: something in this plan that is not working
- 6:05David Nunnery: exactly the way you want. One of the
- 6:07David Nunnery: most difficult things about that is is that
- 6:09David Nunnery: you don't know how to fix it.
- 6:10Leslie Nunnery: Right.
- 6:10David Nunnery: You know? And so you are trying. You
- 6:13David Nunnery: don't know what to try. You're you're searching.
- 6:15David Nunnery: You're looking. You're thinking about, man, am I
- 6:19David Nunnery: the problem? Is my child the problem? I
- 6:22David Nunnery: mean, all kinds of stuff is going through
- 6:24David Nunnery: your head that is really negative. And what
- 6:27David Nunnery: we're gonna go through is a progression, really,
- 6:31David Nunnery: is kinda what it... I I would call
- 6:33David Nunnery: it is is that it's a progression to
- 6:35David Nunnery: help you so that you know what to
- 6:36David Nunnery: do.
- 6:37Leslie Nunnery: Yeah. Yeah. Because so often when you get
- 6:39Leslie Nunnery: into a state where things aren't working quite
- 6:42Leslie Nunnery: right, it's hard to see the forest for
- 6:44Leslie Nunnery: the trees, so to speak. You get so
- 6:46Leslie Nunnery: in the weeds of just the head space
- 6:50Leslie Nunnery: of frustration, at least for me. And I
- 6:53Leslie Nunnery: suspect that that stands for a lot of
- 6:55Leslie Nunnery: homeschool moms out there. You get so frustrated
- 6:58Leslie Nunnery: that it's hard to see your way out.
- 7:00Leslie Nunnery: And so we're gonna walk you through a
- 7:03Leslie Nunnery: a progression, like David said, that will help
- 7:06Leslie Nunnery: you with all your decision making. But if
- 7:08Leslie Nunnery: you apply it right now to these areas
- 7:11Leslie Nunnery: of frustration, you're gonna find that it's way
- 7:13Leslie Nunnery: easier to get back to that mission, tethered
- 7:16Leslie Nunnery: to it, and get going just the way
- 7:18Leslie Nunnery: that you want to in your homeschool year.
- 7:20David Nunnery: So I... Where this starts is that... And
- 7:23David Nunnery: I I believe that there are a lot
- 7:26David Nunnery: of homeschool parents out there that struggle with
- 7:28David Nunnery: this, and this is just the way we
- 7:30David Nunnery: do things. And when I say the way
- 7:32David Nunnery: we do things, I mean, this is the
- 7:34David Nunnery: way human beings do things is is that
- 7:36David Nunnery: they make a decision, and then they hop
- 7:39David Nunnery: right over to action.
- 7:41Leslie Nunnery: Yeah.
- 7:41David Nunnery: And so not too long ago, I had
- 7:43David Nunnery: a coach, and it was a it was
- 7:45David Nunnery: a personal coach that I wasn't actually going
- 7:47David Nunnery: to. It was just somebody that I was
- 7:48David Nunnery: talking to. And they showed me this kind
- 7:51David Nunnery: of... This framework. And it was really helpful.
- 7:54David Nunnery: And what they did is is that they
- 7:56David Nunnery: had a sheet of paper. They had a
- 7:57David Nunnery: column, and it was believe, think, feel, and
- 8:02David Nunnery: then do. And what they said is is
- 8:06David Nunnery: that you make the decision that you're gonna
- 8:09David Nunnery: do something, whatever it might be, and you
- 8:13David Nunnery: hop right to do. And so how that
- 8:16David Nunnery: works itself out with homeschoolers is that a
- 8:19David Nunnery: homeschooler, typically, they will make the decision to
- 8:23David Nunnery: homeschool, and then they'll jump right to curriculum,
- 8:27David Nunnery: or they'll jump right to getting a homeschool
- 8:31David Nunnery: planner, or they will get right to where
- 8:34David Nunnery: are we going to put the kids. And
- 8:36David Nunnery: we see this all the time. During the
- 8:38David Nunnery: pandemic, the coop that our our kids were
- 8:41David Nunnery: a part of, it, like, exploded. And it
- 8:44David Nunnery: was all of these parents that had this
- 8:48David Nunnery: idea of, I wanna homeschool. Where am I
- 8:51David Nunnery: gonna put my kids? And that was the
- 8:53David Nunnery: question that they were asking. Was it, you
- 8:56David Nunnery: know, why do I wanna do this? And
- 8:58David Nunnery: they weren't asking those kind of questions. They
- 9:00David Nunnery: were asking the question, where do I put
- 9:02David Nunnery: my kids or what kind of curriculum should
- 9:05David Nunnery: I buy?
- 9:05Leslie Nunnery: Yeah. Yeah. And, honestly, this shows up in
- 9:08Leslie Nunnery: much smaller things as well. It could show
- 9:11Leslie Nunnery: up in my days are chaotic. I need
- 9:14Leslie Nunnery: to fix it. I need a new schedule.
- 9:16Leslie Nunnery: Like, little things like that. And the reason
- 9:19Leslie Nunnery: that I bring that up is for so
- 9:20Leslie Nunnery: many of us, that's where the rub is
- 9:22Leslie Nunnery: right now. My days are chaotic. I need
- 9:24Leslie Nunnery: to mix things up. I need a new
- 9:25Leslie Nunnery: schedule. I need whatever. But instead of... We
- 9:29Leslie Nunnery: just start trying stuff. Instead of actually going
- 9:32Leslie Nunnery: back, what do I believe, what's important to
- 9:35Leslie Nunnery: our family, and working through it to create
- 9:38Leslie Nunnery: the schedule that is perfect for our family,
- 9:42Leslie Nunnery: we just jump into trying something new that
- 9:44Leslie Nunnery: we see an idea on Instagram about. And
- 9:47Leslie Nunnery: so that's really in the... In those weeds
- 9:49Leslie Nunnery: that I was talking about. It's stuff like
- 9:51Leslie Nunnery: that where this framework becomes incredibly helpful.
- 9:55David Nunnery: So what we're suggesting is is that you
- 9:58David Nunnery: go back to belief. So what is your
- 10:01David Nunnery: mission? And so few families do this. Even
- 10:05David Nunnery: families that are coming to teach them diligently
- 10:08David Nunnery: events, families that are members of Teach Them
- 10:11David Nunnery: Diligently three sixty five, members that follow us
- 10:14David Nunnery: on Facebook, people that are listening to this
- 10:18David Nunnery: podcast right now, they resonate with the idea
- 10:22David Nunnery: that homeschooling is about discipleship, but they've never
- 10:26David Nunnery: actually taken the time to say, what is
- 10:29David Nunnery: my mission? What do I believe about what
- 10:31David Nunnery: I'm homeschooling? And actually write it out.
- 10:34Leslie Nunnery: If it
- 10:34David Nunnery: was They haven't taken that time.
- 10:36Leslie Nunnery: You know, I I actually... I kinda disagree
- 10:38Leslie Nunnery: with you on that because I think that
- 10:40Leslie Nunnery: most of our families do think about their
- 10:42Leslie Nunnery: mission. I think that they do a lot
- 10:44Leslie Nunnery: of them even write it out. Where the
- 10:46Leslie Nunnery: disconnect comes, I believe, is in tethering to
- 10:49Leslie Nunnery: it, in allowing that to become a filter.
- 10:52Leslie Nunnery: And that's what we talked about in the
- 10:54Leslie Nunnery: last podcast. I will I will link that
- 10:56Leslie Nunnery: in the show notes because if you missed
- 10:58Leslie Nunnery: that episode, we talked a lot about remembering
- 11:01Leslie Nunnery: your why and how you allow your why
- 11:04Leslie Nunnery: was five questions to allow that mission to
- 11:07Leslie Nunnery: direct your decisions. And that is foundational to
- 11:10Leslie Nunnery: the conversation that we're gonna have today because
- 11:13Leslie Nunnery: that really is that first step, Taking what
- 11:16Leslie Nunnery: you believe and tethering to it practically rather
- 11:20Leslie Nunnery: than just this is my mission and then
- 11:23Leslie Nunnery: moving on your merry way without allowing that
- 11:25Leslie Nunnery: to filter your... The decisions that you make
- 11:27Leslie Nunnery: day in and day out.
- 11:28David Nunnery: Yeah. Sure. I think that that is actually
- 11:30David Nunnery: a big part of the problem as well
- 11:32David Nunnery: because when you lay out what your belief
- 11:35David Nunnery: is and what your mission is, that's one
- 11:37David Nunnery: thing. But actually acting on it is another.
- 11:41David Nunnery: But I do think that there are a
- 11:43David Nunnery: lot of families out there that just haven't
- 11:45David Nunnery: gotten to the point where they've done this
- 11:47David Nunnery: because they are so busy, and they're so
- 11:52David Nunnery: distracted. And there's so much that is coming
- 11:55David Nunnery: at them, and there's so many people that
- 11:58David Nunnery: are telling them what's wrong with the public
- 12:00David Nunnery: schools and what's wrong with classroom education and
- 12:03David Nunnery: all of these reasons why they should be
- 12:06David Nunnery: homeschooling that doesn't get necessarily to their calling.
- 12:10David Nunnery: And so I do think that there is
- 12:13David Nunnery: a whole lot of families out there that
- 12:16David Nunnery: have not actually written this out, that haven't
- 12:19David Nunnery: actually gotten to the point of belief. They
- 12:22David Nunnery: have gone from, I want to homeschool, and
- 12:26David Nunnery: then they've gone, okay. What curriculum am I
- 12:28David Nunnery: gonna buy? They're going to go from, I
- 12:32David Nunnery: want to homeschool to what room in my
- 12:35David Nunnery: school... In my house am I now going
- 12:37David Nunnery: to make my schoolroom? But then there's another
- 12:40David Nunnery: group out there that is probably just as
- 12:44David Nunnery: significant. That is they know what they believe
- 12:48David Nunnery: about homeschooling. They believe in discipleship. They believe
- 12:52David Nunnery: their home is their Jerusalem just as we
- 12:54David Nunnery: teach, but they struggle with this connection to
- 12:59David Nunnery: allowing that mission to feed what they do
- 13:02David Nunnery: on a daily basis. And for both groups,
- 13:07David Nunnery: what happens is is that things start falling
- 13:10David Nunnery: apart because they don't have that anchor. And,
- 13:13David Nunnery: also, they are looking for something else to
- 13:16David Nunnery: give them direction rather than Jesus Christ, which
- 13:20David Nunnery: never works out. Yeah. Which never works out.
- 13:22David Nunnery: And so I do think that you're right.
- 13:24David Nunnery: There is a significant group of people out
- 13:27David Nunnery: there that they know what their mission is,
- 13:29David Nunnery: but their mission is not informing what they
- 13:31David Nunnery: do. And then there's another group as well
- 13:34David Nunnery: out there that have never gotten to the
- 13:37David Nunnery: point where they have laid out, this is
- 13:39David Nunnery: what I believe about homeschooling. And for those
- 13:42David Nunnery: that have... They have done this before where
- 13:46David Nunnery: they have laid out what they believe and
- 13:47David Nunnery: what their mission is, it's still probably important
- 13:50David Nunnery: for them to go back to this.
- 13:52Leslie Nunnery: Yeah. Yeah. For sure. We talk a lot
- 13:54Leslie Nunnery: about hard schooling around here. And in hard
- 13:57Leslie Nunnery: schooling and in the hard school book, in
- 13:59Leslie Nunnery: the hard school courses that are in three
- 14:01Leslie Nunnery: sixty five, I talk about how the first
- 14:04Leslie Nunnery: attribute, the the the first thing that should
- 14:06Leslie Nunnery: be seen in your life if you are
- 14:08Leslie Nunnery: a heart school is that you remember your
- 14:10Leslie Nunnery: calling. That comes back to what you believe.
- 14:13Leslie Nunnery: Do you understand what God has actually called
- 14:16Leslie Nunnery: you to do? You are parent first and
- 14:18Leslie Nunnery: foremost. You are to go for the hearts
- 14:19Leslie Nunnery: of your children. You need to see homeschooling
- 14:22Leslie Nunnery: as a great tool for that, but your
- 14:24Leslie Nunnery: mission isn't homeschooling. Your mission is to bring
- 14:27Leslie Nunnery: your children to Jesus Christ, to parent them
- 14:29Leslie Nunnery: well, to give them a foundation for a
- 14:31Leslie Nunnery: faith that is their own. That's that remember
- 14:33Leslie Nunnery: your calling, that belief element of making wise
- 14:37Leslie Nunnery: decisions and aligning your home with what you
- 14:40Leslie Nunnery: believe. The second part of this structure, this
- 14:43Leslie Nunnery: this mode of operation, I guess, is that
- 14:47Leslie Nunnery: second part of... Or the second attribute that
- 14:50Leslie Nunnery: you see in a heart schooling family, and
- 14:53Leslie Nunnery: that is realigning your thinking with your calling,
- 14:56Leslie Nunnery: with your mission. So the second part is
- 14:59Leslie Nunnery: really what you think and making sure that
- 15:02Leslie Nunnery: what you think matches what you believe.
- 15:04David Nunnery: Yeah. Absolutely. And and, you know, when you
- 15:09David Nunnery: look at the the Israelites and coming out
- 15:13David Nunnery: of Egypt, And when you look at scripture
- 15:17David Nunnery: and how the Lord interacts with his people,
- 15:21David Nunnery: what he is... What he references all of
- 15:24David Nunnery: these things, where he is going through, what
- 15:27David Nunnery: do you believe about me? Who do you
- 15:29David Nunnery: think that I am? Right? And what do
- 15:32David Nunnery: you believe? What do you believe? What do
- 15:34David Nunnery: you believe? What do you believe? And then
- 15:36David Nunnery: you have these references to, what do you
- 15:40David Nunnery: think? What do you think? And so you
- 15:42David Nunnery: have, for instance, in the the famous verse
- 15:45David Nunnery: in in Philippians four eight, where it talks
- 15:48David Nunnery: about whatever is commendable, right, whatever is pure
- 15:52David Nunnery: excellence, and it starts laying all this out.
- 15:55David Nunnery: Right? And, you know, what about your homeschool
- 16:01David Nunnery: is making you feel that way? You know,
- 16:04David Nunnery: when you think about what you are doing,
- 16:06David Nunnery: you talk about what you believe, and then
- 16:09David Nunnery: what do you think on a daily basis
- 16:11David Nunnery: about what you were doing? Like, how does
- 16:14David Nunnery: what you believe about your homeschool, how does
- 16:18David Nunnery: that make you think?
- 16:19Leslie Nunnery: You you know, I think that's where a
- 16:21Leslie Nunnery: big disconnect is. And, again, we talk about
- 16:23Leslie Nunnery: this a lot in the Hart School Parenting
- 16:25Leslie Nunnery: Intensive because it's very easy to give lip
- 16:28Leslie Nunnery: service to what we believe. But our our
- 16:31Leslie Nunnery: way of thinking is deeply impacted by culture,
- 16:36Leslie Nunnery: by what we see, by what we bring
- 16:38Leslie Nunnery: in. So for so many of us, we
- 16:41Leslie Nunnery: bring in these thoughts of education or these
- 16:44Leslie Nunnery: thoughts about whether we can do it well
- 16:47Leslie Nunnery: enough or whatever. All of that impacts the
- 16:50Leslie Nunnery: way that you think, the way that you
- 16:52Leslie Nunnery: approach things. And that that lens through which
- 16:55Leslie Nunnery: you see what you're doing makes a massive
- 16:59Leslie Nunnery: difference. So you have got to bring your
- 17:02Leslie Nunnery: thoughts captive as we're told in first Corinthians.
- 17:05Leslie Nunnery: Bring those thoughts captive into obedience to what
- 17:09Leslie Nunnery: you know to be true, like David was
- 17:11Leslie Nunnery: talking about. So what you think needs to
- 17:15Leslie Nunnery: be directed by what you believe. You have
- 17:18Leslie Nunnery: got to... A a lot of times, it
- 17:21Leslie Nunnery: takes great intentionality to let go of the
- 17:25Leslie Nunnery: things that you think that are not driving
- 17:27Leslie Nunnery: your mission. They actually are hiccups. They're they're
- 17:30Leslie Nunnery: roadblocks to your mission, which so many of
- 17:33Leslie Nunnery: us have. Real easy examples of that is
- 17:35Leslie Nunnery: when you are judging your homeschool by a
- 17:39Leslie Nunnery: rubric that isn't your own. You're you're looking
- 17:42Leslie Nunnery: at your homeschool efforts based on the grading
- 17:45Leslie Nunnery: scale of a public school or something. We're
- 17:47Leslie Nunnery: doing something entirely different here. You've got to
- 17:51Leslie Nunnery: look at it entirely different. So how you
- 17:54Leslie Nunnery: think needs to be realigned with your mission.
- 17:57Leslie Nunnery: And once you do that, that will be
- 17:59Leslie Nunnery: another attribute of of being a heart schooler,
- 18:02Leslie Nunnery: of actually building that framework that you want
- 18:05Leslie Nunnery: to to help you go for the hearts
- 18:07Leslie Nunnery: of your kids so much more effectively.
- 18:09David Nunnery: Yeah. So... And then the next level of
- 18:11David Nunnery: this is belief, think, and then feel. So
- 18:16David Nunnery: how do you feel? What is emotionally... What
- 18:19David Nunnery: kind of emotions does does your homeschool give
- 18:22David Nunnery: you? Right? When you think about, you go
- 18:24David Nunnery: through and you start writing down, you start
- 18:26David Nunnery: laying it out, what do I believe about
- 18:28David Nunnery: my homeschool? Right? And it may even be
- 18:32David Nunnery: important here to do, what do I believe
- 18:35David Nunnery: now, and what should I be believing about
- 18:37David Nunnery: my homeschool? Because there are all kinds of
- 18:40David Nunnery: thoughts that go through people's heads when they
- 18:43David Nunnery: start to homeschool. They start thinking things like,
- 18:46David Nunnery: my children may not have the opportunity. Right?
- 18:50David Nunnery: And so that actually impacts what you think
- 18:52David Nunnery: and you feel and what you do related
- 18:54David Nunnery: to your homeschool. Right? And so what you
- 18:58David Nunnery: need to do is is that you need
- 18:59David Nunnery: to actually anchor yourself in what your calling
- 19:01David Nunnery: is. I homeschool because I need to bring
- 19:05David Nunnery: my children to Jesus Christ. And therefore, what
- 19:09David Nunnery: do I think about this? Well, I think
- 19:12David Nunnery: what I am doing is the best way
- 19:14David Nunnery: to bring my children to Jesus Christ because
- 19:16David Nunnery: it gives me the time, and it gives
- 19:18David Nunnery: me the relationship, and it gives me the
- 19:21David Nunnery: opportunity. And so the curriculum is not leading
- 19:24David Nunnery: this. My mission is leading this. And so
- 19:27David Nunnery: even though you may be reading something through
- 19:29David Nunnery: the curriculum, you are not beholden to the
- 19:32David Nunnery: curriculum. So now you can actually go off
- 19:35David Nunnery: and actually do what you need to do
- 19:37David Nunnery: in order to help your child. Right? And
- 19:40David Nunnery: so... And then you... So that... So you
- 19:43David Nunnery: have believe and you have think and then
- 19:45David Nunnery: you have feel. And then that feel feeds
- 19:49David Nunnery: what you do.
- 19:50Leslie Nunnery: Yeah.
- 19:51David Nunnery: And I don't know if you understand now
- 19:53David Nunnery: just by going through that. Right? What is
- 19:57David Nunnery: the problem that is created by going from,
- 20:01David Nunnery: I've made this decision, and I'm gonna hop
- 20:04David Nunnery: right over to what I do. You have
- 20:07David Nunnery: no basis. You have no foundation. You have
- 20:10David Nunnery: no anchor and not... No. You just are
- 20:14David Nunnery: basically all action.
- 20:16Leslie Nunnery: Yeah.
- 20:17David Nunnery: And so you are now floundering on this
- 20:21David Nunnery: action side where you're doing all of this
- 20:25David Nunnery: stuff, but you're not getting the results that
- 20:28David Nunnery: you thought you would get. And so now
- 20:29David Nunnery: you're like, what am I gonna do?
- 20:31Leslie Nunnery: Yeah. Yeah. And and just to, like, work
- 20:35Leslie Nunnery: this out really practically, I said at the
- 20:37Leslie Nunnery: at the beginning that for a lot of
- 20:39Leslie Nunnery: people, we get in the weeds and we're
- 20:40Leslie Nunnery: like, my days are so chaotic. I need
- 20:43Leslie Nunnery: to upend my schedule. I need a new
- 20:44Leslie Nunnery: schedule. So if we work through this for
- 20:47Leslie Nunnery: a schedule, just a daily schedule, something that
- 20:50Leslie Nunnery: all of us have to figure out. Right?
- 20:53Leslie Nunnery: What do I believe? Well, I believe that
- 20:55Leslie Nunnery: I am called to bring my children to
- 20:56Leslie Nunnery: Jesus Christ. I believe that I am Herod
- 20:59Leslie Nunnery: first and foremost, and I need to take
- 21:01Leslie Nunnery: every opportunity that I have to go for
- 21:03Leslie Nunnery: the hearts of my kids. I believe that
- 21:05Leslie Nunnery: homeschooling is an amazing tool to give me
- 21:09Leslie Nunnery: time and conversations and the ability to learn
- 21:11Leslie Nunnery: together and to figure out how their minds
- 21:13Leslie Nunnery: work and all of these things. So that's
- 21:16Leslie Nunnery: what I believe. I... And and what I
- 21:18Leslie Nunnery: think. I think that if I use this
- 21:21Leslie Nunnery: correctly, that it will enhance my children's ability
- 21:26Leslie Nunnery: to learn as well as my ability to
- 21:28Leslie Nunnery: go for their hearts. So because of my
- 21:31Leslie Nunnery: mission, I know that if I if I
- 21:33Leslie Nunnery: set up my day correctly with my mission
- 21:36Leslie Nunnery: in view, it's going to make our relationship
- 21:39Leslie Nunnery: stronger. It's gonna make their learning better. It's
- 21:41Leslie Nunnery: gonna give me more opportunities to go for
- 21:43Leslie Nunnery: their hearts. Win, win. How do I feel?
- 21:45Leslie Nunnery: I know that if I don't set up
- 21:47Leslie Nunnery: my day correctly, I am going to feel
- 21:49Leslie Nunnery: really frustrated and irritated. But those days where
- 21:52Leslie Nunnery: I am missional and when I am actually
- 21:55Leslie Nunnery: seizing the opportunities that God gives me, I
- 21:59Leslie Nunnery: leave that day just feeling like it has
- 22:01Leslie Nunnery: been such a success no matter what happens
- 22:03Leslie Nunnery: with the planner. So looking through all of
- 22:06Leslie Nunnery: that lens, what do I wanna do? Well,
- 22:08Leslie Nunnery: I wanna build a day that safeguards my
- 22:11Leslie Nunnery: time to go for my children's hearts. In
- 22:13Leslie Nunnery: our family, the way that that looked was
- 22:17Leslie Nunnery: I knew that every single school day, there
- 22:20Leslie Nunnery: were there were things that had to have
- 22:22Leslie Nunnery: first priority. Number one, I wanted time for
- 22:25Leslie Nunnery: us to come together and to actually talk
- 22:29Leslie Nunnery: about things of the Lord. I shared what
- 22:31Leslie Nunnery: I was learning in my devotions. As they
- 22:33Leslie Nunnery: got older, they did the same. We talked
- 22:34Leslie Nunnery: about stuff like that. We had a great
- 22:36Leslie Nunnery: conversation. A lot of times, I would just
- 22:38Leslie Nunnery: do that at the kitchen table over breakfast.
- 22:41Leslie Nunnery: We just started there. It allowed us to
- 22:44Leslie Nunnery: not start our day chaotically. Everyone knew what
- 22:47Leslie Nunnery: was the very first moment in our day.
- 22:49Leslie Nunnery: From there, we moved into a fancy office,
- 22:53Leslie Nunnery: which I talk about a lot, where we
- 22:54Leslie Nunnery: did a lot of living subjects. We would
- 22:57Leslie Nunnery: read together. We would talk. I got so
- 22:59Leslie Nunnery: much great insight into how their their minds
- 23:02Leslie Nunnery: work, what was in their heart, the conversations.
- 23:04Leslie Nunnery: We talked about philosophy and and all of
- 23:07Leslie Nunnery: these things. And sometimes, that part of my
- 23:10Leslie Nunnery: day would go until lunch because we were
- 23:12Leslie Nunnery: having such great conversations. But because of what
- 23:15Leslie Nunnery: I knew to be true, because of what
- 23:17Leslie Nunnery: I believed and thought and felt, then what
- 23:20Leslie Nunnery: I was doing aligned with that and it
- 23:22Leslie Nunnery: brought in so much more peace. So as
- 23:25Leslie Nunnery: you are looking at something as simple as
- 23:28Leslie Nunnery: how you're going to order your days, if
- 23:31Leslie Nunnery: you walk through that exercise, it becomes so
- 23:34Leslie Nunnery: much clearer as to what you should focus
- 23:37Leslie Nunnery: on and then you line everything up with
- 23:40Leslie Nunnery: that and rising tide helps all ships or
- 23:43Leslie Nunnery: something. Whatever that statement is, it's kind of
- 23:45Leslie Nunnery: what you see. You fix these foundational elements
- 23:48Leslie Nunnery: and the whole rest of the day falls
- 23:50Leslie Nunnery: into place beautifully.
- 23:51David Nunnery: I remember when you started to put that
- 23:54David Nunnery: in place, that time with the kids. Mhmm.
- 23:57David Nunnery: And you talked about stacking the subjects.
- 24:01Leslie Nunnery: Asking conditions.
- 24:02David Nunnery: And stacking conditions. And so you would go
- 24:05David Nunnery: through the devotional time where you would actually
- 24:08David Nunnery: go through bible. What are you learning? This
- 24:10David Nunnery: is what I'm learning, and you would have
- 24:11David Nunnery: a little, you know, kind of devotional time,
- 24:14David Nunnery: and it would lead right into history and
- 24:16David Nunnery: literature. And there was all of this conversation
- 24:20David Nunnery: and all of this laughter, and the kids
- 24:22David Nunnery: were enjoying it. And then all of a
- 24:24David Nunnery: sudden, the day is amazing.
- 24:26Leslie Nunnery: It changes everything.
- 24:27David Nunnery: And, you know, before you put that in,
- 24:30David Nunnery: it was hit or miss. Yeah. You know,
- 24:33David Nunnery: you would have good days, and you would
- 24:34David Nunnery: have bad days. But because you organized your
- 24:39David Nunnery: day around what you believe and then you
- 24:40David Nunnery: started going, okay. What do I think about
- 24:42David Nunnery: that? How does that make me feel? And
- 24:44David Nunnery: then, okay. Well, this is what we're going
- 24:47David Nunnery: to do because we believe this, and then
- 24:49David Nunnery: everything starts to kinda fall into place from
- 24:51David Nunnery: there because it made everything you did after
- 24:55David Nunnery: that so much easier. And so that is
- 24:59David Nunnery: what we're encouraging is... And and we talk
- 25:02David Nunnery: about this a lot, where we talk about
- 25:04David Nunnery: clarity and mission. Mhmm. It's amazing what happens
- 25:09David Nunnery: to your day and to your schedule and
- 25:12David Nunnery: what you are doing If you go back
- 25:15David Nunnery: to clarity in your mission, what exactly am
- 25:18David Nunnery: I doing? Why am I doing this? And
- 25:22David Nunnery: you apply that to every single thing that
- 25:25David Nunnery: you do from that point forward, and it
- 25:27David Nunnery: becomes a filter. Going back to what you
- 25:29David Nunnery: were talking about before, where there's a lot
- 25:33David Nunnery: of families out there, they know what their
- 25:35David Nunnery: why is, but it doesn't actually make it
- 25:37David Nunnery: to the point of action. And so, therefore,
- 25:41David Nunnery: they still don't feel good about what they're
- 25:44David Nunnery: doing.
- 25:44Leslie Nunnery: Yeah. You know, that... We don't talk an
- 25:47Leslie Nunnery: awful lot about what we do inside of
- 25:50Leslie Nunnery: teach them diligently three sixty five, but I
- 25:52Leslie Nunnery: think it's really appropriate right here because everything
- 25:56Leslie Nunnery: in our culture is going against you setting
- 26:00Leslie Nunnery: up your home in this way. You're making
- 26:02Leslie Nunnery: decisions that you are really, really comfortable with
- 26:05Leslie Nunnery: and that just brings life to your family
- 26:07Leslie Nunnery: and your homeschool. And so within three sixty
- 26:10Leslie Nunnery: five, both in the the community as well
- 26:13Leslie Nunnery: as in the heart school intensive and and
- 26:15Leslie Nunnery: other things that we do one on one
- 26:17Leslie Nunnery: with families, we we are there. It's designed
- 26:20Leslie Nunnery: to help you stay on mission. It's designed
- 26:23Leslie Nunnery: to help you stay encouraged and focused. It's
- 26:26Leslie Nunnery: designed to give you access to resources and
- 26:28Leslie Nunnery: community that will that will... You can actually
- 26:32Leslie Nunnery: tether to, and they will help you stay
- 26:34Leslie Nunnery: on mission. And it's been incredible to hear
- 26:37Leslie Nunnery: what God has done in the the families
- 26:40Leslie Nunnery: that have really, really engaged in there. God
- 26:42Leslie Nunnery: has been so good. I've heard from so
- 26:44Leslie Nunnery: many of them that just... It has it
- 26:47Leslie Nunnery: has changed the trajectory of what they're doing,
- 26:50Leslie Nunnery: that they can't imagine homeschooling without teach them
- 26:52Leslie Nunnery: diligent like three sixty five. But these are
- 26:54Leslie Nunnery: their people that more often than not, when
- 26:57Leslie Nunnery: they're having a bad day or they're kind
- 26:59Leslie Nunnery: of in a quandary or floundering a little
- 27:01Leslie Nunnery: bit, they can say something in there and
- 27:04Leslie Nunnery: other ladies, other other homeschoolers will jump right
- 27:07Leslie Nunnery: in and give them really good counsel because
- 27:10Leslie Nunnery: it is filled with Christian homeschool families that
- 27:14Leslie Nunnery: are truly missional just like you. And so
- 27:17Leslie Nunnery: I invite you to to make that investment
- 27:20Leslie Nunnery: in your family by joining us there. Allow
- 27:22Leslie Nunnery: us to walk alongside of you and lock
- 27:25Leslie Nunnery: arms with you three hundred and sixty five
- 27:27Leslie Nunnery: days of the year. Go through the heart
- 27:29Leslie Nunnery: school parenting intensive with us. Let us one
- 27:32Leslie Nunnery: on one, and kinda into a small group
- 27:34Leslie Nunnery: setting, talk to you about how you can
- 27:37Leslie Nunnery: apply these principles and how they can truly
- 27:40Leslie Nunnery: impact your family starting right now. That's just
- 27:43Leslie Nunnery: one of my favorite things that we get
- 27:44Leslie Nunnery: to do, and I wanted to personally invite
- 27:46Leslie Nunnery: you to join us there.
- 27:47David Nunnery: Yeah. And Leslie spends so much time in,
- 27:50David Nunnery: three sixty five in the community and in
- 27:54David Nunnery: the the the mobile app where people are
- 27:56David Nunnery: talking and having conversation. Leslie spends a ton
- 28:00David Nunnery: of time in there, and we are getting
- 28:02David Nunnery: ready actually to start back at the Hart
- 28:04David Nunnery: School Parenting Intensive. It it should be coming
- 28:06David Nunnery: online here in, like, October. And that is
- 28:10David Nunnery: a program which we will talk a little
- 28:12David Nunnery: bit more about that, but that is something
- 28:14David Nunnery: that you actually get mentorship from us. Yeah.
- 28:16David Nunnery: And it is something that comes from... Comes
- 28:19David Nunnery: with teaching diligently three sixty five. And so
- 28:23David Nunnery: just to kinda return back to this, you
- 28:25David Nunnery: know, what do you believe? How does that
- 28:27David Nunnery: make you feel? Or how does that make
- 28:30David Nunnery: you think, how does that make you feel,
- 28:32David Nunnery: and then now what are you going to
- 28:33David Nunnery: do? That is the framework that we are
- 28:36David Nunnery: encouraging you to go back to. And so,
- 28:38David Nunnery: basically, what we are talking about here, if
- 28:40David Nunnery: you just wanna boil this down, the most
- 28:43David Nunnery: important part is going back to what you
- 28:45David Nunnery: believe. So if you're in a situation right
- 28:48David Nunnery: now where you feel like things aren't going
- 28:50David Nunnery: the way that you planned, if you feel
- 28:52David Nunnery: like there's just... Everything's going okay, but there's
- 28:55David Nunnery: one thing that is really off, go back
- 28:57David Nunnery: to what do I believe? What do I
- 29:00David Nunnery: believe about what is not going well? What
- 29:03David Nunnery: do I believe about my homeschool? What do
- 29:04David Nunnery: I believe about parenting? And then how does
- 29:07David Nunnery: that make me think? How does that make
- 29:09David Nunnery: me feel? And then now what am I
- 29:11David Nunnery: going to do? Yep. Yep. So So I
- 29:14David Nunnery: think, actually, one thing that would be really
- 29:16David Nunnery: helpful is to... You have a worksheet that
- 29:19David Nunnery: you put together that is about mission statement
- 29:22David Nunnery: to write out your mission, and that may
- 29:24David Nunnery: actually be something that's really good to put
- 29:25David Nunnery: in the show notes.
- 29:27Leslie Nunnery: Okay. Yep. I'll be glad to to put
- 29:29Leslie Nunnery: that in there. That's actually part of the
- 29:30Leslie Nunnery: Hart School parenting intensive, but I'll grab it
- 29:33Leslie Nunnery: and and give it to you. Like he
- 29:35Leslie Nunnery: noted, we're gonna start another Hart School parenting
- 29:37Leslie Nunnery: intensive soon. If you're not listening to this
- 29:39Leslie Nunnery: around October time frame, know that we do
- 29:42Leslie Nunnery: those in Teach Them Diligently three sixty five
- 29:45Leslie Nunnery: regularly. So you can still join the membership.
- 29:47Leslie Nunnery: You can still take advantage of the next
- 29:49Leslie Nunnery: time that we run it. I hope this
- 29:51Leslie Nunnery: has been an encouragement to you. I hope
- 29:53Leslie Nunnery: that you have a lot more hope about
- 29:55Leslie Nunnery: getting back on track. It's not that hard.
- 29:58Leslie Nunnery: It really just takes taking the time to
- 30:00Leslie Nunnery: boil things down like we talked about. God
- 30:03Leslie Nunnery: is so faithful, and children are so resilient.
- 30:06Leslie Nunnery: So I want you to remember that if
- 30:09Leslie Nunnery: you've gotten off to a rocky start or
- 30:11Leslie Nunnery: if you feel like you're in the mud
- 30:12Leslie Nunnery: a little bit, now is the perfect time
- 30:14Leslie Nunnery: to make the adjustments. Go back to what
- 30:16Leslie Nunnery: you believe. Think your way through it. Align
- 30:19Leslie Nunnery: your thinking with your mission. Refocus on relationships.
- 30:22Leslie Nunnery: Go through all of the elements of a
- 30:24Leslie Nunnery: heart school paradigm, and I... It will help
- 30:26Leslie Nunnery: you immensely. So check that out. There's gonna
- 30:29Leslie Nunnery: be a lot of resources for you in
- 30:30Leslie Nunnery: the show notes today. So I encourage you
- 30:32Leslie Nunnery: to take advantage of those and have a
- 30:35Leslie Nunnery: great rest of your day. We look forward
- 30:37Leslie Nunnery: to talking to you again real soon. Thanks
- 30:43Leslie Nunnery: so much for joining us today. If this
- 30:46Leslie Nunnery: episode encouraged you, I'd love for you to
- 30:49Leslie Nunnery: follow the Teach Them Diligently podcast and share
- 30:52Leslie Nunnery: this episode with another parent who could use
- 30:54Leslie Nunnery: this encouragement too. That really does help us
- 30:58Leslie Nunnery: reach more families. And remember, the everyday work
- 31:02Leslie Nunnery: you're doing in your home matters. Those ordinary
- 31:05Leslie Nunnery: conversations, choices, those routines, and those moments are
- 31:09Leslie Nunnery: shaping your children more than you may realize.
- 31:13Leslie Nunnery: So keep your eyes on Jesus, keep going
- 31:16Leslie Nunnery: for their hearts, and keep teaching them diligently.
