- 1:25of yourself.
- 1:26Welcome, everyone.
- 1:27The master topic for the week is how
- 1:29to let go and level up.
- 1:30Series 5, show number 27.
- 1:33And today we're about how to turn discomfort
- 1:35into fuel.
- 1:36Series 5, show 27, episode number 3.
- 1:41So the theme is discomfort is raw energy.
- 1:44Some people define it as pain is discomfort.
- 1:47And so let's dive in, shall we?
- 1:50Welcome, everyone, to Inspirations for Your Life.
- 1:52I am John C.
- 1:54Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 1:58podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student at
- 2:02Montclair State University, passionate lifelong learner.
- 2:06Yes, and so grateful now to be a
- 2:08published author.
- 2:10Welcome, everyone.
- 2:11Welcome.
- 2:12So today, I continue a powerful shift with
- 2:15you in a perspective because growth is not
- 2:19just about letting go of the past.
- 2:22No.
- 2:22It is about embracing and transforming what the
- 2:26past left behind.
- 2:28Discomfort is not just something to escape.
- 2:31It is something to convert.
- 2:35And that's hard for a lot of people
- 2:37to really understand.
- 2:39Our core message is this today.
- 2:42Most people misunderstand discomfort and pain.
- 2:46They see it as damage, as limitation, as
- 2:50something that happened to them.
- 2:54But discomfort and pain is actually raw energy,
- 2:57as I said.
- 2:57And raw energy can be converted.
- 3:00It can become direction.
- 3:04It can become clarity.
- 3:06It can become purpose.
- 3:11What changes everything is how you interpret it.
- 3:14That's the real key.
- 3:17And most people miss that subtlety.
- 3:20So here are some points to get you
- 3:21on the right track with this thought pattern.
- 3:24Discomfort and pain can become fuel when you
- 3:27stop treating it like a cage.
- 3:31Energy is only trapped when it is not
- 3:33directed.
- 3:34That's an important point to understand.
- 3:37Number two, the question is, what now is
- 3:40more powerful than why me?
- 3:43Direction matters more than the explanation.
- 3:46Number three, struggle is raw material for transformation.
- 3:51Nothing meaningful is created without pressure.
- 3:55Take diamonds, for example.
- 3:58They have to go through lots of amounts
- 4:00of pressure to become something very precious.
- 4:03Number four, what hurt you can also guide
- 4:08and understand that to take you forward.
- 4:13What the hurt can do to guide you
- 4:15forward.
- 4:15Experience becomes insight when it's reframed, not in
- 4:19its pure form.
- 4:21Number five, your story should be a blueprint,
- 4:23not a limitation.
- 4:24Meaning depends on the interpretation present.
- 4:27Number six, scars are evidence of resilience, not
- 4:32weakness.
- 4:33Survival creates capability.
- 4:37And that's a real interesting thing that we
- 4:40have that ability to create capability.
- 4:44Number seven, discomfort shows you what actually matters
- 4:48in life.
- 4:50Discomfort clarifies priorities.
- 4:52Number eight, complaints can be converted into case
- 4:57studies.
- 4:58Experience becomes strategy when it's analyzed properly.
- 5:03Number nine, lessons become powerful when they're turned
- 5:07into creation.
- 5:08Now, insight without action, it immediately fades.
- 5:12And people lose their hope from that whole
- 5:14concept.
- 5:15And that's the whole key that I want
- 5:17to share with you.
- 5:18Number 10, guys, helping others transforms personal discomfort
- 5:24or pain into purpose.
- 5:26Service creates meaning from experience.
- 5:30I think that's an important point for us
- 5:32to realize is to embrace that meaning, embrace
- 5:38that concept of how an experience can get
- 5:44us to learn something, but only when we're
- 5:47aware of it.
- 5:48And then we can choose to make changes
- 5:50to make our lives even better.
- 5:52Number 11, guys, empathy becomes a strength through
- 5:58our lived experience.
- 6:02Understanding others begins with understanding yourself first.
- 6:06I think a lot of people try to
- 6:08understand others, but they don't try to understand
- 6:10themselves.
- 6:10And then they wonder why they can't understand
- 6:12others.
- 6:13It's because they don't know themselves first.
- 6:15We have to first become our own best
- 6:17friend before we can become other people's friends.
- 6:20And I think many people miss that.
- 6:25They go right out to try to be
- 6:28with others, but they don't understand themselves.
- 6:31And then they try to push their own
- 6:32agenda on people.
- 6:34And that never really sits well.
- 6:37It kind of leaves a bad taste in
- 6:40a lot of people's mouth, unfortunately.
- 6:43So just saying.
- 6:45Number 12, guys, your struggles uniquely qualify you
- 6:51in certain areas of your life.
- 6:54Experience allows you to build specialization.
- 7:00And the specialization gives you a very unique
- 7:04perspective, okay?
- 7:08Very unique perspective.
- 7:10Number 13, transformation begins when discomfort and pain
- 7:16becomes identity fuel.
- 7:19That sounds interesting, doesn't it?
- 7:22It is.
- 7:23Reframing changes outcomes.
- 7:26Because we're supposing something else.
- 7:30And then we're acting in that way, and
- 7:33that can change our outcome.
- 7:38Now, again, it does not happen overnight.
- 7:40So I want to be very clear with
- 7:41you and let you know that it does
- 7:42not happen overnight.
- 7:44But you have the potential to grow every
- 7:47single day in your life.
- 7:53Does that make sense, guys?
- 7:55Maybe you're not getting it immediately, but I
- 7:57can tell you that it does work.
- 7:59It's just you have to embrace it.
- 8:04You have to embrace it.
- 8:06If you can't embrace it, then how do
- 8:07you ever go anywhere?
- 8:12How do you go somewhere?
- 8:13How do you change where you are right
- 8:15now if you can't think outside the box?
- 8:22If you can't understand a perception, if you
- 8:24can't get that, how do you move from
- 8:26where you are now to where you want
- 8:29to be?
- 8:30Again, it's not flipping a light switch.
- 8:35It's having intentional thoughts and acting on them.
- 8:41Not because we have to, but because we
- 8:46want to.
- 8:48That's important, guys.
- 8:50Really, really important.
- 8:52Once you do that, your life will start
- 8:54to change.
- 8:54Number 14, you did not go through difficulty
- 8:59to remain unchanged.
- 9:04Difficulty and challenges help us to learn, so
- 9:07we don't go through that anymore.
- 9:13Experience demands evolution.
- 9:17I'll give you a perfect example.
- 9:18Maybe some of you remember a stove, right?
- 9:20And maybe you got close to the stove
- 9:21and you almost burned your hand.
- 9:22You're like, oh, and I pulled my hand
- 9:24away, right?
- 9:25Maybe somebody even got too close and it
- 9:27got really hot.
- 9:27Maybe you did burn your hand, but then
- 9:28you pulled away.
- 9:30That reaction has taught you something.
- 9:32It has taught you, I don't want to
- 9:33burn my hand anymore.
- 9:34I don't want to do that anymore.
- 9:36That's what it has taught you.
- 9:38I think that's a very important thing that
- 9:43people just don't realize.
- 9:46They don't understand why it is, and I'm
- 9:49here to tell you that it makes a
- 9:50huge difference in your life.
- 9:54Huge, huge difference in your life.
- 9:57And that makes a whole difference in the
- 10:00world.
- 10:01When we have this realization, we change our
- 10:10thoughts.
- 10:11We change our actions.
- 10:15And by changing our thoughts and by changing
- 10:17our actions, guess what?
- 10:22We have different outcomes.
- 10:24We have different outcomes.
- 10:30And that's something most people will miss in
- 10:33life.
- 10:35They'll miss that because they never realized that's
- 10:40how it worked.
- 10:42They never realized it.
- 10:44But when you start to understand that concept,
- 10:48your life begins to change.
- 10:51It begins to evolve.
- 10:53It begins to morph in a positive way
- 10:56so that you can actually understand where you're
- 11:02moving toward.
- 11:05You know, it's not like you just get
- 11:06in the car and say, oh, I'm just
- 11:07going to drive down this road, and hopefully
- 11:09I'm going to hit a gas station or
- 11:10hopefully I'm going to hit a restaurant.
- 11:12It's a good hope.
- 11:14But what if you don't?
- 11:15What if you don't have enough gas in
- 11:16your car?
- 11:17Oh, unfortunately, you're going to have to call
- 11:19AAA or one of the services, and then
- 11:20you're going to have to wait for them
- 11:21to come out, and they're going to have
- 11:23to put in like maybe a gallon of
- 11:30gas or half a gallon of gas.
- 11:32And maybe that will get you just somewhere.
- 11:35You still have to get to a gas
- 11:36station to get regular gas.
- 11:39And that's an epiphany for a lot of
- 11:40people.
- 11:41Number 15.
- 11:43Number 15 says journaling, discomfort and pain, turns
- 11:50the emotion into usable insight.
- 11:53So we've all had times in our life
- 11:55when we don't like something.
- 11:56So we don't want to reminisce about the
- 11:59bad experience.
- 12:00We want to reminisce about what happened and
- 12:02learn the lesson.
- 12:03Throw all the other discomfort away.
- 12:05Reflection, guys, creates structure.
- 12:07Too many people don't reflect because they don't
- 12:11think they need to.
- 12:13If you don't reflect, you don't learn.
- 12:15Number 16, guys, pain and discomfort can sharpen
- 12:18your vision for the future.
- 12:20For the future.
- 12:22Clarity often comes through the contrast, through that
- 12:28moment that maybe you're not aware of.
- 12:31Right?
- 12:33And that moment has a way of causing
- 12:37us to believe something.
- 12:43We're looking for fulfillment.
- 12:46We're looking for that in many areas of
- 12:49our life.
- 12:50And when we don't get it, we become
- 12:55unhappy.
- 12:57But do we actually know how to build
- 12:59a better mousetrap or to build a better
- 13:02system so we can have those great experiences?
- 13:05Or do we just get frustrated all the
- 13:06time?
- 13:08And that brings me to my next point.
- 13:10Number 17, frustration can be redirected into action.
- 13:15Not anger.
- 13:17Action.
- 13:18Positive action.
- 13:22Energy needs direction.
- 13:24Not suppression.
- 13:27But too many people out there try to
- 13:30suppress something because they think if they do
- 13:32that, then they can just get it off
- 13:35the table.
- 13:36But then when its head rears again, it
- 13:39comes up stronger.
- 13:41People get angry.
- 13:45Number 18, guys, your story can become your
- 13:49own niche.
- 13:51We all have stories.
- 13:54I'm working on building a group in my
- 13:56town.
- 13:57And we're talking about the history of the
- 13:59town and how the town's losing its history
- 14:02and how big buildings are happening and how
- 14:05that's changing the evolution.
- 14:10So I'm trying to build a histories and
- 14:12memories group to let people share their stories.
- 14:17See, we live for stories.
- 14:19We live to create these moments so we
- 14:22can share them with ourselves and share them
- 14:23with others and relive them and have these
- 14:26amazing experiences that we keep feeling as if
- 14:29they're happening right now.
- 14:31Why do we have pictures?
- 14:33We relive the emotions.
- 14:38And again, not because we have to, guys,
- 14:40but because we want to.
- 14:42That is the true ultimate thing, guys.
- 14:45We relive them because we want to.
- 14:52We relive them because we want to.
- 14:54Number 19, share your insights, not just your
- 14:58emotional replays.
- 15:01Value comes from the interpretation.
- 15:06The interpretation comes from our perceptions.
- 15:10Our perceptions come from what we see or
- 15:13see, what we hear, what we touch, what
- 15:16we taste, what we smell.
- 15:18And our immediate environment and other environments that
- 15:22we interact with.
- 15:24Number 20, guys, your hardest chapter can often
- 15:31become your strongest message.
- 15:36Somebody once told me, John, do the hard
- 15:38things first, then do the easy things.
- 15:45Because when you do that, your motivation picks
- 15:48up and you want to go do the
- 15:51easy things.
- 15:53Depth comes from difficulty.
- 15:56Also, when things are hard, you do the
- 15:59easy things.
- 15:59It's like, oh, wow, this is easy.
- 16:01This is so easy.
- 16:02Depth comes from the difficulty.
- 16:05And difficulty comes from our own skills, our
- 16:11perception, and our ability to learn more about
- 16:17that area, that topic, or that specific niche.
- 16:21Number 21, guys, survival can be transformed into
- 16:25strategy.
- 16:30Survival can move into strategy.
- 16:32Experience becomes advantage only when it's structured, not
- 16:40when it's just some type of mess.
- 16:45Everything needs a structure, guys.
- 16:47When we have chaos in life, we don't
- 16:48learn.
- 16:50Number 22, never again moments can set new
- 16:56standards for us and for others.
- 16:59Boundaries come from experience that we partake in.
- 17:05And that's an important realization.
- 17:08If we know that experience comes from how
- 17:11we perceive things and we don't like something,
- 17:17then we probably pivot away from doing that
- 17:20again or in that specific environment.
- 17:24Number 23, guys, discomfort is inevitable.
- 17:31But the level of suffering, that's optional.
- 17:36That's our own choice.
- 17:38You know, you cut your finger.
- 17:40Are you going to cry about it and
- 17:42complain that it hurts, or are you going
- 17:44to put some Neosporin on it, put a
- 17:46bandaid on it, and move on?
- 17:49What we focus on persists.
- 17:52We focus on discomfort, we get more discomfort.
- 17:56Meaning determines the duration.
- 18:00Some people, they just want to cry.
- 18:02They want to complain, oh, my finger hurts.
- 18:04Oh, this hurts.
- 18:04So let's just think about it harder so
- 18:08it'll hurt even more.
- 18:11When you stop thinking about it, it's like
- 18:14it loses its grip on you and you
- 18:16barely even notice it's there.
- 18:20Number 24, guys, one action today that you
- 18:26choose to take can rewrite an emotional pattern
- 18:29that you've been living for years.
- 18:32One that you didn't even know existed.
- 18:36Momentum break cycles, guys.
- 18:40Why is it people don't want to break
- 18:42the momentum?
- 18:43They're scared.
- 18:46They don't know what's going to happen.
- 18:48They don't know why.
- 18:49But all they know is if they did
- 18:52this, they're going to be different.
- 18:55And they're not ready to be their own
- 18:58unsung hero.
- 19:00And that's a sad thing, guys, when people
- 19:03do that.
- 19:03Really sad.
- 19:05Number 25, growth requires us to use our
- 19:10discomfort and pain, not to avoid it.
- 19:20Does that make sense?
- 19:25I know that can be hard for a
- 19:26lot of people.
- 19:38Avoidance preserves limitation.
- 19:47And if we do that, we put ourselves
- 19:52into a corner.
- 19:54We put ourselves into a life that says
- 19:59we have no way out when we do
- 20:03have options.
- 20:04It's just we're limiting ourselves.
- 20:07We're thinking inside a box.
- 20:09We need to crush the box.
- 20:10We need to think outside the box.
- 20:12That's not new, guys.
- 20:13That's been around for centuries.
- 20:15We have to start thinking outside the box.
- 20:18Crush the box.
- 20:19Get rid of the whole box.
- 20:22Number 26, your experience can help you design
- 20:25better outcomes.
- 20:28Knowledge from pain and discomfort is something very
- 20:32key.
- 20:33You know what that is, guys?
- 20:34It's applied intelligence.
- 20:36When we start to apply intelligence to our
- 20:40discomfort and pain, we become wiser.
- 20:43We become smarter.
- 20:45We also don't do that thing, right?
- 20:46Remember I talked about the stove and we
- 20:48put the fingers like, oh, I just pulled
- 20:49my finger away, right?
- 20:49I put my finger right here and it's
- 20:51like, oh, that's hot.
- 20:51I'm going to pull it away.
- 20:52So you don't do that again.
- 20:54And you start to realize certain things are
- 20:56hot, like stoves and other things, right?
- 20:58Grills.
- 20:59And we learn as we get older what's
- 21:01hot so we don't get burned, so we
- 21:04don't want to get burned.
- 21:05Number 27, your journey can shorten someone else's
- 21:11struggle.
- 21:14I've often said, you know, taking a trip,
- 21:16which I've gone to Europe many times, or
- 21:18taking a trip and doing something, will help
- 21:20you learn 10 times faster than actually learning
- 21:25in a classroom.
- 21:26You want to learn about Europe?
- 21:28Go to Europe.
- 21:29Best way to learn.
- 21:31Not saying learning in a classroom is bad,
- 21:33but you're going to learn 10 times faster
- 21:35when you're immersed in it.
- 21:36That's how we learned our language.
- 21:38Immersion.
- 21:40That's how I learned English.
- 21:41That's how other people learned their languages.
- 21:43They're immersed in it.
- 21:45So the objects, the things and experiences become
- 21:48part of our brain and create these connections.
- 21:52Sharing accelerates others.
- 21:55And when we accelerate others, our life changes.
- 22:00Someone wise once told me, John, you want
- 22:02to become better at something?
- 22:03Yep.
- 22:04Help someone else with the same problem.
- 22:07And you'll get better too.
- 22:10Number 28.
- 22:12Our discomfort and pain can evolve into a
- 22:16very unique, profound purpose when it's directed outward.
- 22:23A lot of people I know talk about
- 22:25service.
- 22:25Service transforms experience.
- 22:27But many people use the service to say
- 22:29that they're service leaders.
- 22:31But when I look under the cover to
- 22:32really see what they are, they're using it
- 22:35as a Band-Aid, as a masking tape.
- 22:39They're using it to exploit others.
- 22:43I love service toward others.
- 22:44But when you use it to exploit others,
- 22:47that's just wrong.
- 22:50That's wrong.
- 22:52Service will always transform the experience.
- 22:56Providing it is genuine.
- 22:57Now you might get people in the beginning
- 22:59that are going to latch on to you.
- 23:02But guess what?
- 23:02Later on, they're going to come on to
- 23:04you and realize maybe you weren't sincere.
- 23:07Number 29.
- 23:08The more you use your discomfort and pain,
- 23:11the less it controls you.
- 23:13You're basically detaching from it.
- 23:15Expression reduces emotional weight.
- 23:20John, that is so darn powerful, I know.
- 23:23Number 30.
- 23:24Our discomfort and pain is the past.
- 23:28But fuel is the future.
- 23:32We can harp on what happened to us
- 23:35in the past.
- 23:36I went this way.
- 23:38This happened to me.
- 23:39We can always do that.
- 23:40But if we don't look past that, then
- 23:44how are we ever going to grow in
- 23:45our lives?
- 23:46I think that's a very, very important thing.
- 23:48And most people just think about what's going
- 23:50on in the day.
- 23:52But they don't look at the fact that
- 23:53I just did this.
- 23:54Well, I don't want to do it again
- 23:55and have the same type of reaction or
- 23:58the same type of results.
- 23:59And I'll have the same type of results
- 24:00if I choose to do the same thing
- 24:03over and over again.
- 24:04Einstein said this very well a long time
- 24:06ago.
- 24:07Doing the same thing over and over again
- 24:09is what?
- 24:10It is insanity.
- 24:11So if we do the same thing over
- 24:12and over again and we expect different results,
- 24:15that is insanity.
- 24:16If we keep doing the same thing over
- 24:19and over again and expect the same results,
- 24:21insanity.
- 24:22So we need to change what it is
- 24:24we are doing so we can move forward.
- 24:27And direction, ladies and gentlemen, determines the transformation.
- 24:30Not only transformation, but the level of transformation,
- 24:34where we're going to go, what we're going
- 24:36to do.
- 24:37That's determined all by you.
- 24:42And I think when we ponder about our
- 24:47perceptions and just noticing something like if we're
- 24:52driving a white car, something we see a
- 24:54lot of white cars, it's because our REC,
- 24:58our Reticulate Activating System, or RAS, is attuned
- 25:02to that.
- 25:04What happens if you go to a word
- 25:05processor and you type something?
- 25:07It finds it.
- 25:08What happens if you go to LinkedIn and
- 25:10you type a word?
- 25:11It finds it.
- 25:12Like contacts, it'll find it.
- 25:13But if you put it in quotes, it
- 25:15only finds that in LinkedIn.
- 25:18Different types of searches.
- 25:19So ladies and gentlemen, as closing today, here
- 25:23is the truth.
- 25:23You guys want the truth, don't you?
- 25:25I want to have some more RO water
- 25:26here.
- 25:28So basically the whole thing of RO water
- 25:30and then maybe less than, I'm going to
- 25:32say, very small amount, maybe less than, not
- 25:38even, not even, I'm going to say maybe
- 25:40eight tablespoons of lemon makes a real difference.
- 25:46So our discomfort and pain does not disappear
- 25:50just because you ignore it.
- 25:52It disappears when you use it, when you
- 25:58convert it, when you redirect it, because anything
- 26:04that is not expressed becomes stored.
- 26:08When you have a headache and we say,
- 26:09gee, I don't have a headache, what do
- 26:10we teach people?
- 26:11Think about your headache.
- 26:13Think about, you know, what shape is the
- 26:15headache?
- 26:16What color is the headache?
- 26:19What texture is the headache?
- 26:22Those kind of things.
- 26:23And when we try to put it into
- 26:25something like a noun, it starts to lose
- 26:28discomfort.
- 26:31Because it's now being classified.
- 26:34But anything that is used becomes power.
- 26:42Anything that is used becomes power.
- 26:47Anything that is used becomes power.
- 26:49That is so priceless.
- 26:54Most people miss the cookie, right, I'm calling
- 26:59it the cookie, or the prize because they
- 27:03have not been aware.
- 27:05Maybe they opened their eyes for a moment
- 27:07and their ears for a moment and then
- 27:08they turned their head.
- 27:10They weren't even there a minute.
- 27:13When you just sit and become aware of
- 27:16the environment, you gather so many data points
- 27:21subconsciously.
- 27:22That's key.
