- 0:08Speaker 1: Well, in the words of the great philosophers Handsome, you
- 0:11Speaker 1: have so many relationships in this life, only one or
- 0:15Speaker 1: two will last. You go through the pain and strife,
- 0:18Speaker 1: then you turn your back and they're gone so fast. Well,
- 0:20Speaker 1: at least one super netball coach is feeling the sting
- 0:23Speaker 1: of that reality. This week where we're talking a lot
- 0:26Speaker 1: about that. You're on No Dribble strap in Hello and
- 0:40Speaker 1: welcome to No Dribble, the podcast where we talk about netball.
- 0:43Speaker 1: We talk about so much more. I do have a
- 0:46Speaker 1: handsOn reference in there because we talked about Hanson and
- 0:49Speaker 1: Bob a few weeks ago, and our very young, hip
- 0:53Speaker 1: cool producer Alex tells me that she's a Handsoon fan.
- 0:56Speaker 1: So there you go with you thanks back.
- 1:00Speaker 2: So I won't. I'm surprised we mentioned now.
- 1:04Speaker 1: I think she's quite robust and she's at peace with
- 1:07Speaker 1: her relationship with hands Anyway, she's an Bob fan and
- 1:12Speaker 1: is grateful that I bring out the Christmas ceting. Anyway,
- 1:14Speaker 1: my name's Carolyn Swindle, I'm Cat Cocks, and I'm Gordy.
- 1:19Speaker 3: I'm welcome, Gordian. Susan am Yeah so much.
- 1:27Speaker 2: And tell us where you are because you look like
- 1:29Speaker 2: you're fresh off the beach.
- 1:32Speaker 4: Yeah, well, if you looked at my Instagram post last
- 1:35Speaker 4: night you would know because I posted a picture of
- 1:38Speaker 4: a bottle of bintang and a glass and said that,
- 1:42Speaker 4: what do I say that? All you know all the
- 1:44Speaker 4: netballers posting their bikinis, but this is my But did.
- 1:48Speaker 1: You get my response? I only sent it about an
- 1:50Speaker 1: hour ago?
- 1:51Speaker 3: No, what did you say?
- 1:52Speaker 1: Nice jugs? Classic a classic of the genre.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Very good. Yeah, in Bali girls, you've just done a runner,
- 2:04Speaker 3: haven't you.
- 2:04Speaker 2: You've taken some time off your there by yourself. Tell
- 2:07Speaker 2: what have you been doing?
- 2:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I am over.
- 2:09Speaker 4: I don't usually come here by myself, to be honest
- 2:12Speaker 4: with you, but this is a bit of a runner
- 2:14Speaker 4: because obviously.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Colm Games is around the corner. So want to take
- 2:17Speaker 3: a back breath?
- 2:18Speaker 4: Yes, so, yeah, although I'm not as naked as I
- 2:21Speaker 4: normally am, but with no general manager role sort of, yeah,
- 2:24Speaker 4: I'm not.
- 2:26Speaker 3: I'm better than normal. But what have I been doing?
- 2:29Speaker 3: Like nothing?
- 2:30Speaker 4: It's like nothing, seriously, So like I love going down
- 2:35Speaker 4: the beach, So I go down the beach every day,
- 2:37Speaker 4: same spot, same people, and yeah, podcasts, music, read a book,
- 2:44Speaker 4: going to start another one today, and like, seriously, at nighttime,
- 2:47Speaker 4: have dinner, go to bed.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Last night was my latest night? What time was that about? Ten?
- 2:53Speaker 1: And can you recommend anything?
- 2:55Speaker 3: What are you reading? I read? I just read blind
- 2:58Speaker 3: Side by James Patterson. Is that the movie?
- 3:01Speaker 1: It's a great beach read.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Yeah, it was an easy beach read. I don't know.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Is it a movie?
- 3:05Speaker 1: No, no, no, you're thinking of that Sandra Bullock movie
- 3:08Speaker 1: which was great. The blind Side about this woman who
- 3:12Speaker 1: ended up sort of semi adopting this poor kid and
- 3:15Speaker 1: he then had this amazing career in the NFL.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Really good movie.
- 3:20Speaker 1: She and I think did she get an oscar for
- 3:22Speaker 1: that or something? But this is James Patterson.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Yeah, it was a good book.
- 3:26Speaker 4: It was best seller, thriller. I've turned the pages. The
- 3:30Speaker 4: worst thing about books though, on the beach, when the
- 3:33Speaker 4: wind blows like the pages.
- 3:35Speaker 3: You know, that's why you've got to get your kindled.
- 3:37Speaker 3: I don't have that. But the book.
- 3:38Speaker 4: By the time I got to about page three hundred,
- 3:41Speaker 4: I literally was holding the pages together. So I had
- 3:44Speaker 4: to finish the book in the bedroom because I was
- 3:47Speaker 4: a bit worried that I'd be chasing page three sixty
- 3:49Speaker 4: down the beach.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Knowing all about books. Yeah, I know that they end.
- 4:01Speaker 2: That's the best part.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Yeah, yea, yes, Hey, I wanted to tell you. I
- 4:06Speaker 4: was thinking about this the other day. I go for
- 4:08Speaker 4: a big walk every morning. That's the other thing I do, Catherine,
- 4:11Speaker 4: I go for a big walk. And I was walking
- 4:13Speaker 4: down towards the airport, and because this time of year
- 4:16Speaker 4: in Bali, it's a little bit windy, and so they
- 4:19Speaker 4: have a lot of kite like kite festival, so it's
- 4:22Speaker 4: a big thing over here. And anyhow, as I was
- 4:25Speaker 4: walking down that there's massive gathering and all the kites
- 4:29Speaker 4: are being built, and you know, blah blah blah blah blah.
- 4:31Speaker 3: And they do a lot of offerings. So you know,
- 4:34Speaker 3: you've been cats. You've been to Bali, Carolin, you've been here, yep, yeah,
- 4:38Speaker 3: so you know the offerings.
- 4:39Speaker 4: And they make the baskets out of the bamboo leaf
- 4:42Speaker 4: and then they place in the flowers and they might
- 4:45Speaker 4: put there's there's a certain number of things I have
- 4:47Speaker 4: to put in there.
- 4:47Speaker 3: I know, they put in some food like a biscuit,
- 4:49Speaker 3: and they put in a cigarette. You know, the gods
- 4:52Speaker 3: like to smoke, and all this sort of stuff.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Into vaping yeah, but it's still on the Alpine line.
- 5:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Anyhow, speaking of the old pine lights. So I'm walking
- 5:04Speaker 4: along and these two kids you can see. The dad
- 5:06Speaker 4: said to them, go and take the offering down to
- 5:09Speaker 4: the beach. And so the dad walks away and the
- 5:11Speaker 4: kids are looking at it, and then the little kid
- 5:13Speaker 4: says to the other kid, grab the cigarette.
- 5:18Speaker 3: And he's like, no, no, and then he does.
- 5:20Speaker 4: He grabs a cigarette and pops it in his pocket
- 5:22Speaker 4: and then walks down the beach and puts the offering
- 5:24Speaker 4: on the beach. So he was going to go and
- 5:26Speaker 4: have a little CIGGI. The two kids, I reckon they
- 5:28Speaker 4: would have been I don't know, seven and eight.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Oh god, no, oh god. Anything happens in valley. It
- 5:36Speaker 3: was so funny.
- 5:37Speaker 1: So a few years ago, maybe seven or eight years ago,
- 5:42Speaker 1: but it's been so long since I have smoked that.
- 5:47Speaker 1: The menthol cigarettes now, like most cigarettes, have some type
- 5:51Speaker 1: of menthol capability. There's just a little capsule in them
- 5:54Speaker 1: that you squeeze and then that makes it mental. Maybe
- 5:56Speaker 1: he used to have to go and specifically buy the
- 5:59Speaker 1: Pine line to get that fresh mental flavor with your tobacco.
- 6:04Speaker 1: But yeah, now it's a little squeezy thing that you
- 6:07Speaker 1: can take an ordinary gasper and turn it into a
- 6:12Speaker 1: mental gasper. And it's not minty fresh everyone. It's not
- 6:15Speaker 1: still not pleasant, so not at all, but it's cooler
- 6:19Speaker 1: than vain.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Catherine, where are you?
- 6:21Speaker 5: Well, I'm in Queensland. I have just opened the window
- 6:24Speaker 5: so you can see the beautiful you behind me. But
- 6:28Speaker 5: we've been up north Queensland. My sister's got a place
- 6:32Speaker 5: up there. We were up there for well like eight days,
- 6:35Speaker 5: nine days, and we've just got back to the g.
- 6:37Speaker 1: So did you say Bundy Way, like seventeen seventy round there?
- 6:40Speaker 2: Is it all up Bundy Way?
- 6:42Speaker 5: Yes? And the second night we walked into the local
- 6:45Speaker 5: bowls club and I was just going towards our table
- 6:48Speaker 5: and this woman goes Caperent and I turned around. She goes, oh,
- 6:52Speaker 5: an issue and she was a dribbler and she just
- 6:56Speaker 5: she had literally just driven up there.
- 6:58Speaker 2: She goes, I've just been the podcast on the troop
- 7:01Speaker 2: on the way here.
- 7:03Speaker 5: And I kind of said your name, not thinking was
- 7:05Speaker 5: actually you, but then you turned around and she said sorry,
- 7:08Speaker 5: I'm having a moment.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Oh how funny.
- 7:11Speaker 2: It was brilliant dribblers everywhere and she's not do we here.
- 7:17Speaker 5: Is what we do off season, we get out of that.
- 7:20Speaker 5: So no, and the weather's been amazing. So we've done
- 7:23Speaker 5: nothing else but same sort of things. Beach walks every morning,
- 7:26Speaker 5: get a coffee, lie about dinners every night. We did
- 7:30Speaker 5: go to it's been a bit embarrassing. Actually, they have
- 7:34Speaker 5: raffle nights probably a couple of nights a week at
- 7:36Speaker 5: the local club and they also do bingo.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Love it.
- 7:40Speaker 5: So first raffle night between our family, we won three
- 7:43Speaker 5: raffle prizes and this is like fifty dollar ouches for
- 7:46Speaker 5: the seafood place and meat trays, you know whatever.
- 7:48Speaker 2: We won three. That was bad enough.
- 7:51Speaker 5: Then Harper Mum, my sister and I went to bingo.
- 7:55Speaker 5: Between us, we won eleven games of bingo. I added,
- 8:02Speaker 5: what do you win when you win a bingo game?
- 8:04Speaker 2: Oh, like like between five and fifteen dollars.
- 8:07Speaker 5: So we walked out of there with death stairs, not
- 8:10Speaker 5: from the locals, but also with all the change in
- 8:13Speaker 5: the pocket. Then the night before we left Hasha, the
- 8:17Speaker 5: night before we left, we went back for a final
- 8:19Speaker 5: raffle ticket and a meal at the balls club.
- 8:21Speaker 2: We ended up with five wins from the raffle. Well, wow,
- 8:26Speaker 2: time to time to go.
- 8:28Speaker 3: People were in the place pat that, oh you need
- 8:34Speaker 3: to go and buy a lotto ticket.
- 8:35Speaker 5: Now embarrassed, embarrassing, Like literally, by the end we've had
- 8:40Speaker 5: seven year old smoking, ten year old's gambling. Yeah, the
- 8:45Speaker 5: old lady said it was okay for her to gamble,
- 8:47Speaker 5: so we're like, oh, they're approving, that's fine. But anyway, yes,
- 8:50Speaker 5: it got embarrassing to the point that we had to
- 8:52Speaker 5: We've got to have a little break from there. Can't
- 8:55Speaker 5: show a great.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Yeah it's been good, gone by a lottery ticket.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Might have to get onto that, do that acent And
- 9:02Speaker 2: then what have you been doing since year of Carolin?
- 9:05Speaker 1: Well, I'm, of course the fool who had my holiday
- 9:07Speaker 1: before the Grand Final, Yeah, and then obliterated myself on
- 9:11Speaker 1: the Grand Final. Weekends. I have just been I've had
- 9:14Speaker 1: the quietest weekend. It has been very lovely. Actually, my
- 9:17Speaker 1: mum and my stepdad arrived from New Zealand today, but
- 9:20Speaker 1: we just we didn't do very much. We went out
- 9:22Speaker 1: for dinner last night at six thirty, home by ten
- 9:25Speaker 1: past eight, absolutely perfect. Sleeping in, yeah, but just trying
- 9:31Speaker 1: to take a little bit of the frantic pace off
- 9:36Speaker 1: while the kids are home. On school holidays. But they
- 9:39Speaker 1: can go back to school next week.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Now I'm done.
- 9:41Speaker 1: That's this been enough that they can go back and
- 9:45Speaker 1: get further educated.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Now, Carroll, they're all here in Bali. They're all here, Yes,
- 9:50Speaker 3: I bet they are.
- 9:52Speaker 1: We did fight because we had our We had our
- 9:55Speaker 1: holiday when we did because my son is doing his
- 9:58Speaker 1: HSC so it was like best to lie in the
- 10:00Speaker 1: first week of the school holidays and then he's been
- 10:03Speaker 1: studying since. And we went up to punk Hove, absolutely beautiful.
- 10:07Speaker 1: But we've discovered that as a family, what really unites
- 10:11Speaker 1: us is picking people when we're around in public and
- 10:14Speaker 1: hating them together, Like finding one person and going, yeah,
- 10:17Speaker 1: that person's really annoying me. I know it doesn't reflect
- 10:20Speaker 1: that well on us. But we went to Hartley's Crocodile
- 10:23Speaker 1: Farm and there was one kid who my son just
- 10:26Speaker 1: de writing on it. And everywhere we turned this kid
- 10:29Speaker 1: was there. It's like, oh, let's go in this direction
- 10:31Speaker 1: because they've gone in that direction. Suddenly you turn around,
- 10:34Speaker 1: we're standing next to the cassowaries and this kid is
- 10:37Speaker 1: there giving his opinion again on stuff. And he was,
- 10:40Speaker 1: you know, he was just young, very smart kid.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Whatever.
- 10:43Speaker 1: But it annoyed my son so much that the rest
- 10:48Speaker 1: of us turned away from being annoyed at the boy
- 10:50Speaker 1: and more focused on or how do we dial this
- 10:53Speaker 1: up for Lewis? So I've done something that is probably
- 10:57Speaker 1: it's probably not cool, but we've captured a fundo off him.
- 10:59Speaker 1: So Louis is only get some socks this year with
- 11:01Speaker 1: a photo of the kid's face on it, and periodically
- 11:04Speaker 1: both we keep texting him the photo for thisis he'll
- 11:09Speaker 1: want to go back to.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Boarding school soon.
- 11:11Speaker 2: That is gold. You've got to turn it up a notch,
- 11:14Speaker 2: don't you You can what you do I get?
- 11:18Speaker 3: Do you know that that's not a game, that's a habit.
- 11:20Speaker 4: I have that habit where I can, like I will
- 11:24Speaker 4: just have an awareness of someone who's pissing me off,
- 11:29Speaker 4: and I can't stop.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Like completely unreasonable, Like there's no.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Will in my head. It's not unreasonable.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Yeah, And Rose will say to me, she'd just like
- 11:42Speaker 4: stop it, and I'm like I can't, like particularly on
- 11:44Speaker 4: an airplane, airplanes where you can't get away, you know,
- 11:49Speaker 4: and like you'll hear some lady telling a story about
- 11:53Speaker 4: like it's always when you come to Bali and they're
- 11:55Speaker 4: the bloody balley experts and.
- 11:58Speaker 3: You know, they know couture and all this, and I'm
- 11:59Speaker 3: just like shut up, Like if everyone knows, could tut
- 12:03Speaker 3: you know whatever.
- 12:06Speaker 4: I just can't stop Ago no, No, it's like you know,
- 12:09Speaker 4: like thirty years ago. It's just one of the names
- 12:12Speaker 4: over here, but Monday whatever. But you just you just
- 12:15Speaker 4: hear them talking and I just like I put my
- 12:17Speaker 4: earphones in because that's the only way I can stop.
- 12:21Speaker 3: But I have that habit like your son.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Well, where we flew back from Cans and it was
- 12:26Speaker 1: a late night flies at last Thursday night before the
- 12:30Speaker 1: weekend for the grand farm. There's it was quite an
- 12:32Speaker 1: empty flight, so people spread out, which is great, but
- 12:35Speaker 1: there's one kid lying there across the whole bank of
- 12:38Speaker 1: seats watching the iPad. Great no headphones not great headphones
- 12:43Speaker 1: on planes. Do not listen to something on a plane
- 12:47Speaker 1: with ourt headphones on.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Like it's just we encountered this as well. But what's
- 12:51Speaker 2: worse that it was a baby and they put freaking
- 12:55Speaker 2: baby shark on nah with no headphones.
- 13:02Speaker 3: That's unacceptable, watcher.
- 13:04Speaker 2: It's actual torture. Unacceptable, it is, isn't it. I do
- 13:08Speaker 2: not see that.
- 13:09Speaker 4: I went through a period where as I would hop
- 13:12Speaker 4: on the plane, I would get my phone out and
- 13:14Speaker 4: I would post a Facebook like story explaining about everybody
- 13:21Speaker 4: on the because it was like every time I hopped
- 13:23Speaker 4: on the plane there was it was just like a nightmare.
- 13:26Speaker 3: And so I like and I felt so bad because
- 13:28Speaker 3: but I had to get it off. So let therapal
- 13:31Speaker 3: about it. Yeah, hey, speaking of planes, question, this is
- 13:35Speaker 3: very appropriate that you spoke about a guy lying across
- 13:38Speaker 3: four seats.
- 13:39Speaker 4: So as we know, I'm I'm heading off to Glasgow
- 13:42Speaker 4: next week, which we can have a chat about. But
- 13:45Speaker 4: I've been looking at my seat on the plane. So yeah,
- 13:48Speaker 4: you know in advance, I have now you know, long
- 13:51Speaker 4: long haul flights. I am in com and yeah, it's
- 13:55Speaker 4: a big deal.
- 13:55Speaker 3: So I have a question.
- 13:58Speaker 4: So I looked last night where I went to bed.
- 14:01Speaker 4: I've got to I've got a bulk head seat at
- 14:03Speaker 4: the front right, so I've got good leg room, no
- 14:06Speaker 4: one next to me. But at the moment, the plane
- 14:10Speaker 4: looks empty, and I got a feeling that that's a
- 14:13Speaker 4: little bit the way at the moment because a lot
- 14:15Speaker 4: of people, like you know, flights aren't full going out.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Don't risk it, don't risk it is that what you're
- 14:21Speaker 2: going to say.
- 14:23Speaker 4: No, no, so well yes, because there's like heats and
- 14:28Speaker 4: heats and heats of rows of four just.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Vacant like everywhere in the plane. And I'm like, oh,
- 14:36Speaker 3: what do I do? I do account hey, sick tight.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Release till the eve of.
- 14:46Speaker 1: But I even think then if the flights that empty,
- 14:49Speaker 1: you'll be able to move, get up, and then if
- 14:51Speaker 1: it's not those exit row seats. This is what when
- 14:54Speaker 1: we went to Europe last year, so good, got down
- 14:57Speaker 1: my carry on bag, put that in fro of me,
- 15:00Speaker 1: put my feet up, feet on that, and it was like, well,
- 15:04Speaker 1: I'm going to Land of Nod now.
- 15:06Speaker 3: And there's the little person I was going to say,
- 15:09Speaker 3: isn't every chair in exit roast seat for you on
- 15:11Speaker 3: a plane?
- 15:12Speaker 1: It's not. It's not the leg room. It's having the
- 15:15Speaker 1: feet down the whole time for me. That that bothers me.
- 15:19Speaker 1: I'm just listen to you two on your holidays, having
- 15:23Speaker 1: a nice time. I'm here in the studio working hard.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Goat.
- 15:29Speaker 3: You'd laugh at these.
- 15:30Speaker 4: Every time I stop on the plane with Rose. Rose
- 15:33Speaker 4: would be like, I'd book the flights. And so if
- 15:36Speaker 4: we're sitting together, one of us is either going to
- 15:38Speaker 4: be on the isle and in the middle, or window
- 15:41Speaker 4: and in the middle. And so I'm like, you know, Rose,
- 15:43Speaker 4: you don't travel as much as me, so you can
- 15:45Speaker 4: suck it up and take a middle seat.
- 15:47Speaker 3: And every time we'd hop on the plane, she would say,
- 15:50Speaker 3: oh God, this is just like it's there's not enough
- 15:52Speaker 3: room I need to sit in like an exit seat.
- 15:55Speaker 3: I'm like, Rosemary, you are five foot six or seven
- 15:59Speaker 3: like it is here is like she got this perception
- 16:02Speaker 3: that she she's so she's like, no.
- 16:04Speaker 5: I'm quite tall.
- 16:05Speaker 3: I'm like, Rose, look at this man over here, his knees,
- 16:08Speaker 3: you're around his ears.
- 16:10Speaker 2: She's not.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Every single time, I'm like, sit in the middle. Shut up. Yeah,
- 16:14Speaker 3: this is very conversation.
- 16:18Speaker 5: God might advice to you because I have I have
- 16:22Speaker 5: done that before. Gordy, don't move because you'll end up
- 16:24Speaker 5: with a family on either side of you. Stick with
- 16:28Speaker 5: what you've got until the last minute. It's tempting, and I.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Wouldn't do anything until you get to the airport, and
- 16:37Speaker 1: then charm the person who is cheating in and explaining
- 16:41Speaker 1: the situation and let them give you an expert opinion.
- 16:45Speaker 1: And they're always helpful if you're not an asshole to them.
- 16:49Speaker 2: They block seats out for you.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Once I was flying back from Perth and I was exhausted,
- 16:59Speaker 1: must have been a real early morning flight, and I'd
- 17:01Speaker 1: had something the night before, and so I paid to
- 17:05Speaker 1: have the exit row seat. The plane was virtually empty,
- 17:08Speaker 1: and I was asleep with sort of leaning over onto
- 17:12Speaker 1: the seat next to me. It was a two seater
- 17:14Speaker 1: in like a bank of two seats by the exit row.
- 17:17Speaker 1: I was asleep with my head on my bag. A
- 17:20Speaker 1: guy came up woke me up and said I want
- 17:23Speaker 1: to sit there, and I'm well, well, I'm so annoyed
- 17:29Speaker 1: with myself. I just kind of acted annoyed with him
- 17:31Speaker 1: instead of like, well, what the hell, dude, I've paid
- 17:34Speaker 1: for this, you've woken me up. If you want to
- 17:36Speaker 1: sit here, you pay, go and talk to the flight attendants.
- 17:39Speaker 1: I did nothing except just sit there and be irritated.
- 17:41Speaker 1: But what an arrogant But just he woke me. He
- 17:46Speaker 1: didn't even he didn't even go, oh, when she's awake,
- 17:49Speaker 1: I'll just go and sit there that. You know, if
- 17:51Speaker 1: that had happened, I probably wouldn't have been that worried.
- 17:53Speaker 1: But it's like I've paid money to have this exit
- 17:56Speaker 1: row seat. No one else has paid money to have
- 17:58Speaker 1: the exit row seat next to me. That doesn't mean
- 18:01Speaker 1: you just get to wake me up. Oh it's one
- 18:04Speaker 1: of those one of those bloody fly in fly out
- 18:07Speaker 1: mining type.
- 18:08Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, we have a lot of them in
- 18:11Speaker 3: w A.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Oh so this has just been a lot of white
- 18:13Speaker 1: women rage this morning. We've had about eighteen minutes of
- 18:19Speaker 1: moaning about the airlines and talking about children smoking and
- 18:23Speaker 1: kids we hate. But anyway, we should have a little
- 18:26Speaker 1: break and come back and talk about some network and
- 18:29Speaker 1: I want to talk about briani Acle. Ah yes, oh yeah, Okay,
- 19:03Speaker 1: So I got to tell you this has been giving
- 19:07Speaker 1: me actually quite a lot of sleepless hours. I am
- 19:11Speaker 1: thinking about this. I am I get we're a professional
- 19:15Speaker 1: sport and that this stuff happens and that coaches get
- 19:19Speaker 1: moved on, but I am not happy about the decision
- 19:25Speaker 1: not to reappoint briani acor.
- 19:28Speaker 5: Where's that come from? I mean, none of us are, Carolyn,
- 19:31Speaker 5: But what's your biggest gripe with it?
- 19:33Speaker 1: Well, my biggest gripe is that, well, look, I'm going
- 19:38Speaker 1: to try to withhold some judgment until I see who
- 19:41Speaker 1: they are appointing next. Now, look, I get it, I'm
- 19:45Speaker 1: a Swifts member. I've been along to the games this year,
- 19:48Speaker 1: but it's like we have a coach who, in what
- 19:51Speaker 1: she had nine seasons, coached them to Premiers twice. They
- 19:55Speaker 1: were defeated in the Grand Final by one goal. On
- 19:57Speaker 1: a third occasion twenty five, they finished the regular season second.
- 20:03Speaker 1: This year they've finished fifth, but both of the diamonds
- 20:08Speaker 1: in this team were injured for a significant part of
- 20:11Speaker 1: the season. Helen Housby was out for most of the season,
- 20:15Speaker 1: then they brought Grace White in, and then she was
- 20:18Speaker 1: injured for the last two games, and they still ended
- 20:20Speaker 1: up finishing just outside the four. I just think that
- 20:25Speaker 1: this is an entirely premature decision, and I would love
- 20:29Speaker 1: just unless they're bringing in someone with a perfect a
- 20:33Speaker 1: really long track record that is perfect. I just think
- 20:37Speaker 1: it's a bad decision.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Who's that exactly? No one like that exists will be interested,
- 20:44Speaker 2: wonder who it is.
- 20:45Speaker 4: Then I think the if I put my old GM
- 20:50Speaker 4: hat on the decision to go to market on a
- 20:56Speaker 4: coach like this is the interesting one.
- 20:58Speaker 3: The way that I was watching this from the out
- 21:01Speaker 3: so Briani I'm right in saying she actually applied for
- 21:05Speaker 3: the role, is that right?
- 21:06Speaker 1: Yeah, and said she wanted to yep.
- 21:09Speaker 4: Yeah, So you would like to think you'd like to
- 21:13Speaker 4: think that if they've opened up the role in the
- 21:18Speaker 4: sense and Brian and have said to Briani like we
- 21:21Speaker 4: want you to apply, you would like to think genuinely
- 21:26Speaker 4: that they thought she could potentially still hold the job. Yeah,
- 21:31Speaker 4: because otherwise you just you have those conversations, you probably
- 21:38Speaker 4: have them earlier so that there's the ability then to
- 21:41Speaker 4: prep departure appropriately, albeit probably quite uncomfortable. No coach likes
- 21:47Speaker 4: to be told see you later, blah blah blah. So
- 21:50Speaker 4: for me where I get where, I'm sort of trying
- 21:54Speaker 4: to get my head around this. And don't get me wrong,
- 21:57Speaker 4: bry great coach and will continue to. I can't wait
- 22:00Speaker 4: to see what she does with the Silver Fans blah
- 22:02Speaker 4: blah blah blah blah. But I just kind of go,
- 22:06Speaker 4: Surely the Swifts have handled this in the sense of
- 22:08Speaker 4: she's come in to interview, So when you say, Carolyn,
- 22:13Speaker 4: you just hope it's someone that's going to step in
- 22:15Speaker 4: that's perfect. I'm probably going, well, whoever they've chosen they're
- 22:21Speaker 4: saying must have interviewed or been better than what Briani did,
- 22:26Speaker 4: because you'd like to think that Briani went to the
- 22:30Speaker 4: interview with as equal an opportunity to get the role
- 22:35Speaker 4: as anybody else, because, like I said, otherwise, you would
- 22:40Speaker 4: handle this differently.
- 22:41Speaker 3: So that's the only thing in my head. So can't
- 22:43Speaker 3: wait to see who it is.
- 22:44Speaker 5: Oh, I can't wait either, And I'm really intrigued as
- 22:47Speaker 5: to when they'll announce this because not forgetting, players have
- 22:50Speaker 5: to sign contracts with clubs I think. I mean, the
- 22:54Speaker 5: Swifts is a big powerhouse club. People want to play
- 22:56Speaker 5: for them, but this is going to be a really
- 22:58Speaker 5: pivotal appointment in what that looks like going forward. I'm
- 23:02Speaker 5: gutted for Briani, I'm guted for the club. I'm gutted
- 23:05Speaker 5: for former players. I'm guarded for sponsors because she had
- 23:11Speaker 5: such great relationships with a lot of those people. I
- 23:14Speaker 5: don't love the way it's been handled in terms of timing.
- 23:17Speaker 5: I appreciate that that's how things are handled these days,
- 23:20Speaker 5: but when do we get to celebrate Briannie Apele. We've
- 23:24Speaker 5: just missed a massive opportunity that've.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Had the Swifts, that had the gala dinner, I hosted it.
- 23:28Speaker 5: No one knew anything then, So I just don't want
- 23:32Speaker 5: this to be a moment that we have missed an
- 23:34Speaker 5: opportunity to celebrate Briani. Their decision has been made outside
- 23:38Speaker 5: the season as a change of poach, and that's it.
- 23:41Speaker 2: That's the end of it.
- 23:42Speaker 5: Like I think Briani was absolutely incredible in starting the
- 23:49Speaker 5: past players push when she took over as a head
- 23:52Speaker 5: coaching role and really getting a little bit more of
- 23:55Speaker 5: that legacy built. Because when I finished with the Swifts,
- 23:57Speaker 5: I didn't feel a line to the Swift's a great deal,
- 24:00Speaker 5: not a huge deal. We all do now, and it
- 24:02Speaker 5: was off the back of her passion say we have
- 24:05Speaker 5: got such incredible athletes as ex players of this club,
- 24:08Speaker 5: we need to have them involved and we need them
- 24:10Speaker 5: to be a part of the storytelling in the history.
- 24:13Speaker 5: And she was the big backbone behind that. What we
- 24:15Speaker 5: have now is an incredible group of ex players and
- 24:18Speaker 5: passion towards the club that brie built.
- 24:21Speaker 4: You know, Kat's two things that pop to mind there
- 24:24Speaker 4: right like while you're saying that. So number one, whilst
- 24:27Speaker 4: it is sad Brianni can depart the club and know
- 24:33Speaker 4: and what an enormous legacy she leaves behind. And I
- 24:37Speaker 4: don't think that that like she won't she won't be
- 24:41Speaker 4: reflecting on that just yet. But what you're talking about
- 24:45Speaker 4: every club dreams of is to have that past player
- 24:48Speaker 4: connection and that the club is bigger than just the
- 24:51Speaker 4: sum of those there at that moment. And so I
- 24:54Speaker 4: think I think Briani will find time to eventually reflect,
- 24:58Speaker 4: and I have no doubt many people will find her
- 25:03Speaker 4: to say that. But I also this is just ticking
- 25:06Speaker 4: over in my head as you were speaking. Briani's still
- 25:09Speaker 4: a young coach. Yes, yeah, I hope, and this comes
- 25:14Speaker 4: very much with my coach has had on. I hope
- 25:17Speaker 4: that the club have been able to give her the
- 25:21Speaker 4: right feedback as to why she hasn't been selected as
- 25:26Speaker 4: coach and that she can go away again in the
- 25:31Speaker 4: right time and actually go all right, If that's the case,
- 25:35Speaker 4: how do I grow as a coach?
- 25:37Speaker 3: What am I going to do about it?
- 25:39Speaker 4: Because who's to say Brianie doesn't come back to the
- 25:42Speaker 4: Swiss to coach.
- 25:43Speaker 3: That's not an impossible feat, all.
- 25:45Speaker 4: Right, But it's what she does between now and then
- 25:52Speaker 4: that will be That's what defines her. You know what
- 25:54Speaker 4: I mean, that's going to be really defining. So I
- 25:57Speaker 4: don't know that this will be the end of Briani.
- 25:59Speaker 4: I think like there's not a huge amount of great
- 26:02Speaker 4: coaches this level, right, and so you see someone like
- 26:06Speaker 4: Simone mckinness leave the game and you think, oh, I
- 26:08Speaker 4: don't know, Simone applied for the role, like who knows?
- 26:11Speaker 4: I don't know, but Simone very easily could still be
- 26:14Speaker 4: coaching an SSN club.
- 26:16Speaker 3: But the willingness of.
- 26:17Speaker 4: Her to uplift her life and move this is always
- 26:20Speaker 4: one of the great difficulties in our game. And as
- 26:23Speaker 4: we know, Brian has got a big family and that
- 26:26Speaker 4: might not be overly easy.
- 26:27Speaker 3: But what is it that she does.
- 26:29Speaker 4: Between now and potentially her next coaching opportunity, And who
- 26:33Speaker 4: knows where that's at, And like I said, it could
- 26:35Speaker 4: be at the Swift. So I just hope she's been
- 26:37Speaker 4: given I just hope she's been given honest feedback because
- 26:42Speaker 4: I think that's so so important for all coaches' growth.
- 26:45Speaker 3: Whatever that is.
- 26:46Speaker 1: It's a really good You raise some really good points
- 26:48Speaker 1: there about organizationally, how do you manage difficult conversations as employers?
- 26:55Speaker 1: And that's you know, that's what we're looking at here,
- 26:57Speaker 1: we are looking at an organization dealing with an employee,
- 27:01Speaker 1: and so you know, we are a professional sport and
- 27:03Speaker 1: we have to deal with this personally. I think they've
- 27:05Speaker 1: missed a massive opportunity, like to say, Briani, next year
- 27:10Speaker 1: will be your last year if we do not have
- 27:13Speaker 1: a grand final appearance. So let's talk about what that
- 27:18Speaker 1: looks like. So one, you're on notice, which I think
- 27:23Speaker 1: is a little bit unreasonable anyway, given her performance record
- 27:25Speaker 1: over the years. But if they wanted to do that,
- 27:28Speaker 1: to say, let's do it in your tenth year and
- 27:30Speaker 1: then we can we can together exit you from this
- 27:33Speaker 1: role and then you can go, the fans can fare well,
- 27:36Speaker 1: we can do it in an orderly fashion, like I
- 27:39Speaker 1: feel like, you know, when Julie Fitzgerald left last year
- 27:43Speaker 1: of you know, totally of her own volition. That announcement
- 27:45Speaker 1: came at the end of the season and the club
- 27:47Speaker 1: were able to do something to farewell her at the
- 27:51Speaker 1: doubleheader and at the beginning of the season. If I
- 27:56Speaker 1: was Briany, I'm probably not feeling like going and letting
- 27:59Speaker 1: this shower me with love and talk about hashtag always
- 28:03Speaker 1: a swift at the beginning of next season. Now, she
- 28:06Speaker 1: might be more mature than I am, and she might
- 28:08Speaker 1: be able to process these emotions a little bit faster.
- 28:11Speaker 1: But I just I feel like there's been an enormous
- 28:14Speaker 1: lost opportunity to do this in a way that supports
- 28:19Speaker 1: the way the Swift's organization presents itself as this heritage family,
- 28:26Speaker 1: you know, always a Swift, you know, all of that stuff.
- 28:28Speaker 3: I just I feel like this is a.
- 28:32Speaker 1: It could have been done very differently.
- 28:34Speaker 3: Yeah, you know what, I agree, But I also have
- 28:38Speaker 3: the flip of the coin to go.
- 28:40Speaker 4: That's that's the emotional side of all of us, and
- 28:43Speaker 4: that because we've all got a We've all the three
- 28:45Speaker 4: of us here have a connection to Brian in different ways, right.
- 28:49Speaker 3: But I also know from an organization perspective that you know,
- 28:56Speaker 3: you don't get that all the time.
- 28:58Speaker 4: Actually you mostly don't get that, like mostly, and it
- 29:01Speaker 4: doesn't matter how long someone's but it doesn't happen.
- 29:03Speaker 1: In rugby league.
- 29:03Speaker 2: It's like you're gone.
- 29:04Speaker 1: You know, it doesn't matter midseason, you're gone. Now, we
- 29:07Speaker 1: rarely do that as a sport.
- 29:09Speaker 5: Will be very intrigued though, what the playing roster looks like,
- 29:13Speaker 5: because I feel like if you're going to make a
- 29:14Speaker 5: call like that on the coach, you need to be
- 29:16Speaker 5: that tough on this team.
- 29:17Speaker 2: This team's been the same for a long time and
- 29:19Speaker 2: they're not getting results now.
- 29:21Speaker 4: But dgually that's part of it though, cav maybe that's
- 29:23Speaker 4: and Carolyn, you know, like is that what the Swifts
- 29:27Speaker 4: have decided is that they do need to shift. They
- 29:30Speaker 4: can feel like maybe a different coach will have the
- 29:34Speaker 4: ability to like a different view and therefore a different
- 29:37Speaker 4: playing group, you know, I mean the phones are going
- 29:40Speaker 4: the phones are going crazy in the background, a player.
- 29:44Speaker 2: Movement frustrating, so you can't do anything about it. Just shit.
- 29:48Speaker 4: Yeah, but you know, at the end of the day,
- 29:50Speaker 4: it's not just the responsible like the coach plays like
- 29:52Speaker 4: the game's grown so much so even like as an example,
- 29:55Speaker 4: when I was at Fever, like Dan has a lot
- 29:58Speaker 4: to say, but my job was to recruit, so it
- 30:00Speaker 4: didn't matter whether I had a coach or not.
- 30:01Speaker 3: Like we've got a list management committee.
- 30:03Speaker 4: We kind of we discuss, you know, you know, you
- 30:07Speaker 4: discuss your vision, you know, and then it's the role
- 30:11Speaker 4: of the recruiter to go and do that. And so
- 30:16Speaker 4: you know, I only used to pull Dan in every
- 30:18Speaker 4: once in a while if I felt he needed to
- 30:19Speaker 4: have a conversation with someone. So there's That's not to
- 30:22Speaker 4: say that the switch the Swiss will be heavily in
- 30:24Speaker 4: the process, irrespective of.
- 30:27Speaker 3: What's been going on or who's been appointed as coach.
- 30:30Speaker 3: And look at the maps.
- 30:31Speaker 1: You know they went into We almost started the season
- 30:33Speaker 1: without them having a coach, and Jared was able to
- 30:36Speaker 1: come in. He was appointed once the entire team had
- 30:39Speaker 1: you know, they were already locked in and he was
- 30:42Speaker 1: given here's your team, let's go, and did very well.
- 30:45Speaker 5: So can I ask you both the question Dylan Nextip
- 30:50Speaker 5: was the assistant coach for the Swifts.
- 30:51Speaker 6: If he is suddenly appointed the new Swift's head coach,
- 30:55Speaker 6: and we have three men as head coaches of the
- 30:59Speaker 6: national when there's only eight coaches available, what's your thoughts
- 31:02Speaker 6: on that?
- 31:04Speaker 4: So I'll answer this in this sense, I just want
- 31:06Speaker 4: the best coaches. I would like to think that I
- 31:10Speaker 4: would like to think that the there is like it's
- 31:14Speaker 4: not a male it's not a male female thing.
- 31:16Speaker 2: For me, it's not at all.
- 31:18Speaker 5: No, But you would like to think that we had
- 31:21Speaker 5: more pathways to support the women who are the majority
- 31:25Speaker 5: of the sport.
- 31:26Speaker 4: Right, Well, I think where my head goes straight away.
- 31:29Speaker 4: And I was actually pissed about this. When afl W
- 31:34Speaker 4: started up. There was there, I don't know that there
- 31:38Speaker 4: wasn't a lot of female coaches. So afl W starts
- 31:40Speaker 4: and literally I don't want to say because someone will
- 31:44Speaker 4: come back and me go, now that's bullshit. But like
- 31:46Speaker 4: a lot of the coach's coaching positions were men, right,
- 31:50Speaker 4: and so I'm like, okay, well where's the pathway for women?
- 31:53Speaker 3: So I feel like I felt very strongly about that.
- 31:56Speaker 3: So I guess on the flip.
- 31:57Speaker 4: Side of it, you know, And I mean I've worked
- 31:59Speaker 4: I work with Dan right so, and I know how
- 32:02Speaker 4: brilliant he is, So I don't have an issue, but
- 32:04Speaker 4: I just want to I want to know that the
- 32:07Speaker 4: best coaches are there in the league, and that probably
- 32:13Speaker 4: cas more teams promotes more opportunity as opposed to three
- 32:17Speaker 4: coaches being male in an eighteen competition. I just think,
- 32:22Speaker 4: you know, we've got to keep this great vision of
- 32:24Speaker 4: our league growing.
- 32:25Speaker 3: However that is, that's I'm sitting on the fence, yep.
- 32:30Speaker 2: I think.
- 32:30Speaker 1: I mean a couple of points. You know, afl W
- 32:33Speaker 1: came out of AFL, so it was not a women's sport.
- 32:36Speaker 1: You know, netball has always been a predominantly female sport.
- 32:40Speaker 1: The volunteers in it are predominantly female, so we should
- 32:44Speaker 1: be having more of our very senior coaches being female
- 32:47Speaker 1: than in AFL.
- 32:49Speaker 3: Yeah, AFL W, Sorry, AFL W.
- 32:52Speaker 4: Though there was a massive female system, it just like
- 32:57Speaker 4: that like the men in our gay it just wasn't
- 32:59Speaker 4: recognize So there was no shortage of women AFL coaches
- 33:04Speaker 4: around like they were they were there, you know, and
- 33:07Speaker 4: and and great, you know, you look now and there
- 33:10Speaker 4: are a lot of women coaches with opportunities at a
- 33:13Speaker 4: FL because the AFLD, like it got nasty, like and
- 33:17Speaker 4: I think Nicole Livingston came in as the CEO, AM
- 33:21Speaker 4: I right AFL. Yeah yeah, And and you know she
- 33:26Speaker 4: made a really concerted effort. From my understanding, this is
- 33:29Speaker 4: my memory, a balley memory at the moment, trying to
- 33:31Speaker 4: connect all the dots.
- 33:32Speaker 3: But yeah, I just remember I just remember that that
- 33:36Speaker 3: like it. It actually really annoyed me at the time
- 33:38Speaker 3: when I was reading it.
- 33:39Speaker 4: So you just kind of think, like like give them
- 33:43Speaker 4: an opportunity, right, But then I guess, you know, don't
- 33:46Speaker 4: get me wrong, the men in our game are significant,
- 33:49Speaker 4: are significant, and Dylan, Dylan's gone through everything, so if
- 33:53Speaker 4: he gets the job, I'll be fascinated to see how
- 33:55Speaker 4: he goes.
- 33:55Speaker 3: No different to Jazz, But.
- 33:57Speaker 1: I think the question so when Jerah went in as
- 34:02Speaker 1: the coach of MAVs, it was I think a big
- 34:04Speaker 1: step up for him. He'd done a lot of coaching,
- 34:06Speaker 1: but this was the first time he had been He
- 34:08Speaker 1: hadn't been an assistant coach at this level as far
- 34:10Speaker 1: as I understand.
- 34:11Speaker 2: So that was it.
- 34:11Speaker 1: But they didn't have a flood of applicants for this position,
- 34:15Speaker 1: So I think that's a separate thing. When I look
- 34:17Speaker 1: at the potential of Dylan being appointed as the new
- 34:20Speaker 1: South Wales Swift's coach, I would just hope that any
- 34:24Speaker 1: woman who could put a hand up and say I've
- 34:26Speaker 1: got two seasons as an assistant coach, as a specialist
- 34:30Speaker 1: defense coach with a team that has a poor defense
- 34:33Speaker 1: record in this last season, I'm ready put me in.
- 34:36Speaker 1: I'm ready to be the head coach. I would hope
- 34:38Speaker 1: that a woman would be given the same sort of consideration.
- 34:41Speaker 1: And I don't know, can't I can't draw a parallel
- 34:44Speaker 1: to know that. So you know, I look at what
- 34:48Speaker 1: Dan and Jared have done and I think it's actually
- 34:50Speaker 1: quite exciting to have that diversity and to see the
- 34:52Speaker 1: different ways that they coach and what and what they
- 34:55Speaker 1: bring to it. So for me, it's not about gender.
- 34:58Speaker 1: It's about making sure that we're not fast tracking blokes
- 35:02Speaker 1: when if women weren't being given the same opportunities. So again,
- 35:06Speaker 1: I can't draw a parallel, So I can't say, oh,
- 35:08Speaker 1: that would be unfair because X, Y Z happened. But
- 35:11Speaker 1: that's what I would need to see to go well, this,
- 35:13Speaker 1: this is, this is not problematic.
- 35:16Speaker 3: We should preface this conversation by saying, none of us
- 35:19Speaker 3: here on this screen have any I no, no, we
- 35:21Speaker 3: don't even know if he's who's got the job, not
- 35:24Speaker 3: at all, but no.
- 35:25Speaker 1: But this is so, this is a lot of the
- 35:27Speaker 1: chat in the Facebook group. There's a lot of and
- 35:30Speaker 1: I'm sure Netbourne, New South Wales is well aware of
- 35:35Speaker 1: the of the dismay among a lot of fans about
- 35:38Speaker 1: Briany not being reappointed and the like, and you know,
- 35:41Speaker 1: there are you know, there's lots of speculation. Is Simone
- 35:45Speaker 1: Mcinness coming back? You know, is Dame Noel in Tara
- 35:48Speaker 1: coming over here, none of which has any necessary substance
- 35:52Speaker 1: behind it, but this is this is reflecting the conversation
- 35:54Speaker 1: that is going on there.
- 35:55Speaker 4: The one thing I would say, if by chance Dylan
- 35:59Speaker 4: does get the role, the key thing and this is
- 36:03Speaker 4: the same with all coaches, but particularly Dylan, who's if
- 36:07Speaker 4: he does get this role, and I guess the level
- 36:09Speaker 4: of inexperience that sits in his coaching is that he
- 36:14Speaker 4: builds a really good mentor system around him that will
- 36:20Speaker 4: be so critical And a lot of coaches do this,
- 36:23Speaker 4: and a lot of coaches don't do this, but I
- 36:26Speaker 4: think it's it'll be critically important that because you know,
- 36:30Speaker 4: sitting as an assistant coach is one thing, but when
- 36:33Speaker 4: you are put in the driving seat, it's not about
- 36:36Speaker 4: game day coaching. Game day coaching is probably that's the
- 36:39Speaker 4: fun part, but it's everything that sits either side of
- 36:43Speaker 4: that game day coaching, in running a high performance system,
- 36:48Speaker 4: managing staff, managing athlete you know, individual athlete relationships.
- 36:54Speaker 3: It's a beast of a job.
- 36:56Speaker 4: And I think a lot of coaches that step in
- 37:00Speaker 4: in their first year at like an SSN level are
- 37:04Speaker 4: quite shocked at the enormity of the role and you
- 37:08Speaker 4: step away, you know, you're stepping up from either A
- 37:11Speaker 4: being an assistant coach or b being the coach of
- 37:14Speaker 4: a state league program or whatever it might be, and
- 37:17Speaker 4: then realizing, hold on, I've actually got to run this
- 37:20Speaker 4: all day, every day, and I mean that it's seven
- 37:22Speaker 4: days a week with very very little downtime, So it
- 37:27Speaker 4: is a massive role.
- 37:29Speaker 5: One of the prime examples is probably Dan Ryan right
- 37:31Speaker 5: when he was first with the other Aid Thunderbirds, and
- 37:34Speaker 5: he was he thrown into that right.
- 37:36Speaker 2: At the end.
- 37:37Speaker 3: Was that when no, no, no, he wasn't thrown into it.
- 37:41Speaker 4: But at that point in time, the high performance system
- 37:44Speaker 4: that was in place at the Thunderbirds was greatly lacking
- 37:48Speaker 4: to the point they didn't have a Yeah, they didn't
- 37:50Speaker 4: have a general or a high performance manager like he
- 37:53Speaker 4: had minimal staff.
- 37:55Speaker 3: Yeah he yeah, And he was an inexperienced coach.
- 37:58Speaker 5: And he'll be the first to say them, Yeah, person
- 38:00Speaker 5: the same coach, but what those extra years and the
- 38:03Speaker 5: support around someone the difference that can make.
- 38:05Speaker 4: Yeah, And he went and did work on him, you know,
- 38:07Speaker 4: he went did work, He went overseas, he coached. Yeah,
- 38:10Speaker 4: but he'll be the first to tell you that you know,
- 38:12Speaker 4: when he stepped into the role at Fever Like he
- 38:14Speaker 4: was blessed that the club, not dissimilar to the Swiss,
- 38:17Speaker 4: has a great system and good people in it. But
- 38:21Speaker 4: he's still had a lot of work to do and
- 38:23Speaker 4: to learn. You know, he had a lot to learn
- 38:25Speaker 4: when he first came in and managed. But he's and
- 38:27Speaker 4: he continued, he's a real and again you would like
- 38:30Speaker 4: to think that anyone stepping into this Swiss role, you
- 38:33Speaker 4: just have to be you have to be a learner.
- 38:36Speaker 4: You want you have to want to continue to you know,
- 38:40Speaker 4: learn as a coach constantly.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Yeah, and look at an even more chaotic year than
- 38:45Speaker 1: than usual to start a job of this size, because
- 38:48Speaker 1: we've got you know, it looked looking like next year's competition.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Each team's going to look quite different to what looks
- 38:55Speaker 1: like this year. But you know, we'll just finish off
- 38:57Speaker 1: this conversation now saying Briani. Beethoven composed nine symphonies legend,
- 39:03Speaker 1: hundreds of years later, nine seasons legend. But I think
- 39:07Speaker 1: that the whole comp thunderbirds need to be thanking Briani.
- 39:12Speaker 1: Firebirds certainly need to be thanking Briani. If you've got
- 39:14Speaker 1: a Kiwi in your team. You need to be thanking
- 39:17Speaker 1: Briani Akle because it was only the work that Briani
- 39:20Speaker 1: did with Grace Wecki and Grace's courage to be able
- 39:22Speaker 1: to step away from the New Zealand system and say
- 39:25Speaker 1: I will put myself out of contention for silver ferns
- 39:28Speaker 1: selection because I believe that this environment here will support
- 39:32Speaker 1: my development more. Now, as a result of that, New
- 39:35Speaker 1: Zealand had to change their selection criteria for silver ferns,
- 39:40Speaker 1: which then allowed us to have all of these extraordinary
- 39:43Speaker 1: New Zealand athletes, making them move over here and joining
- 39:46Speaker 1: our competition. So I think that the legacy of Briani
- 39:49Speaker 1: acle goes well beyond the New South Wales Swifts and
- 39:54Speaker 1: I look forward to being able to celebrate that at
- 39:58Speaker 1: the appropriate time for the whole sport to pay tribute
- 40:02Speaker 1: to that appropriately.
- 40:04Speaker 3: Absolutely. Here's jeez, well we got through.
- 40:10Speaker 1: We're swearing, I thought, but look, let's take a little
- 40:14Speaker 1: break and come back, and I have to tell you
- 40:17Speaker 1: something terribly exciting that's happened to me in the past week. Okay, So, Catherine,
- 40:33Speaker 1: you turned fifty this year. Did you get your invitation
- 40:38Speaker 1: from the Australian government just thend them a little pooh sample.
- 40:43Speaker 5: I did get one to do a little boob squeeze
- 40:44Speaker 5: and one horrendously uncomfortable machine. But I think as I
- 40:48Speaker 5: had already had a test recently, they might have thought,
- 40:50Speaker 5: we'll give her a break on that one.
- 40:52Speaker 2: Did you get one recently?
- 40:54Speaker 1: I did get one recently, so mine arrived. So you
- 40:57Speaker 1: start getting these after your fiftieth birthday arrived in a
- 41:01Speaker 1: very cruel twist of fate, on the day I turned fifty,
- 41:05Speaker 1: So it was like, oh, well, thanks very much for that.
- 41:08Speaker 1: I really appreciate. If I was not aware that I
- 41:11Speaker 1: was middle aged today, I certainly am now. But anyway,
- 41:14Speaker 1: so I got another test recently, and then I messed
- 41:18Speaker 1: it up, so I had to order another one that
- 41:20Speaker 1: came through and messed it up. We need more mess
- 41:27Speaker 1: it up, Okay, So what they send you is a
- 41:31Speaker 1: little vial with a stick on the end, and you
- 41:34Speaker 1: put you there's a piece of paper that you put
- 41:36Speaker 1: into the toilet bowl that the instructions say, do we
- 41:39Speaker 1: first and then put this paper in, and then when
- 41:41Speaker 1: you do a poop, it will fall on that. You
- 41:43Speaker 1: get your little stick, you put it in. They on'tly
- 41:45Speaker 1: need a little bit you put it in, no problem,
- 41:48Speaker 1: super easy. But I'm not that regular, so you know,
- 41:54Speaker 1: sometimes it happens for me and sometimes it doesn't. I
- 41:58Speaker 1: might have had a little bit of Afer Foremancey anxiety.
- 42:01Speaker 1: The paper was down, nothing showed up, and then I
- 42:05Speaker 1: just had to go, well, I can't sit here for
- 42:08Speaker 1: three days in the hope that that that this happens.
- 42:11Speaker 1: So it was just that I had to flush away
- 42:13Speaker 1: the piece of paper, so I had all of the
- 42:15Speaker 1: other stuff, but just they sent me another one. Yep, exactly,
- 42:21Speaker 1: you know, I just it's it's you need the paper.
- 42:24Speaker 1: The paper is a critical component of this because you
- 42:28Speaker 1: don't want to be putting your hand in the ball
- 42:29Speaker 1: and picking it out and anyway, So I did it.
- 42:32Speaker 1: You've got to do two samples. They want them to
- 42:34Speaker 1: be done within about three days. I did it, and
- 42:37Speaker 1: then yesterday afternoon I thought, I'm going to go to
- 42:41Speaker 1: the post office and I had my cap my bag
- 42:45Speaker 1: of capsules to go back to an espresso for recite.
- 42:48Speaker 1: Clang had to pick up the dry cleaning from one
- 42:50Speaker 1: of those wonderful machines where you plug in your number
- 42:53Speaker 1: and it comes out like you're in the Jetsons or something,
- 42:56Speaker 1: and I said to Dot, I'll just grab the grab
- 42:58Speaker 1: the mail. We'll walk up to the post office. And
- 43:01Speaker 1: she grabbed the little envelope that it's in. It's a
- 43:04Speaker 1: little padded envelope, gave it a squeeze and she said,
- 43:06Speaker 1: is this a scrunchy And I said, oh, no, darling,
- 43:09Speaker 1: and I made a hand it to me and I
- 43:11Speaker 1: said it's my Pooh test. And she acted like she
- 43:13Speaker 1: almost vomited on the spot. I thought, for a.
- 43:20Speaker 5: Moment you were going to say you'd sent the capsules
- 43:22Speaker 5: back to an espresso instead of Yeah.
- 43:30Speaker 1: I think we're very fortunate to live in a country where,
- 43:34Speaker 1: for free you can send off this sample and they'll
- 43:37Speaker 1: look at it and tell you if there's a problem,
- 43:39Speaker 1: and then if there is a problem, we had free
- 43:41Speaker 1: health care to help you deal with it. So I think,
- 43:45Speaker 1: embrace all embrace all the opportunities to send people a
- 43:49Speaker 1: sample a ship through the mail.
- 43:51Speaker 2: Yes, oh, post deserve more money these days, don't they.
- 43:57Speaker 1: It's just so funny. But she was so sure I scrunchy.
- 44:05Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a comedy skip.
- 44:10Speaker 1: Anyway. Everyone needs to look after their health, have your
- 44:13Speaker 1: regular tests people. Anyway, I think that's probably all we've
- 44:17Speaker 1: got time for for a Wednesday.
- 44:20Speaker 4: It was a.
- 44:22Speaker 1: A great relief to have a laugh after the emotion
- 44:24Speaker 1: about netball segment. But Gordy, you're going to stay with
- 44:27Speaker 1: us until Friday and come back for another chat on Friday,
- 44:32Speaker 1: So I think we'll sign off now, and thank you.
- 44:35Speaker 3: I'm Carolyn sw I've got got I'm so Gordian. Bye,
- 44:41Speaker 3: Shou
