- 0:03Speaker 1: Hike and everybody on Dan Horde and thanks for downloading
- 0:06Speaker 1: the Bengals Booth podcast. Du wuishing and hoping and thinking
- 0:12Speaker 1: and praying. Addition, as we look back at a frustrating
- 0:16Speaker 1: afternoon in Oakland that saw the Bengals fall to oh
- 0:19Speaker 1: and ten with a seven point loss to the Raiders.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Coming up, you'll hear radio replays, locker room comments from
- 0:26Speaker 1: players and coaches, and Dave Lapp them will join me
- 0:29Speaker 1: for postgame analysis. Plus, in this week's fun Facts Conversation,
- 0:33Speaker 1: we'll meet the person under the pads as I'll talk
- 0:37Speaker 1: to veteran offensive lineman John Jerry. All of that is
- 0:40Speaker 1: straight ahead, but first, here's a quick reminder that you
- 0:43Speaker 1: can have the latest edition of this podcast delivered right
- 0:47Speaker 1: to your phone, tablet, or computer by subscribing on iTunes, Stitcher,
- 0:52Speaker 1: Google Play, Spotify, or pod Bean. It's the greatest thing
- 0:57Speaker 1: since unsliced bread. Yeah, I know, that's not how the
- 1:03Speaker 1: saying goes. The common phrase the best thing since sliced bread,
- 1:07Speaker 1: as a way of hyping something new, supposedly started back
- 1:10Speaker 1: in the nineteen thirties as an advertising slogan for wonder Bread,
- 1:15Speaker 1: the first commercial manufacturer of pre wrapped pre sliced bread.
- 1:21Speaker 1: But I'm a big toast in the morning guy, and
- 1:24Speaker 1: I like to slice mine a little thicker, especially if
- 1:27Speaker 1: it's a loaf of bread from the geniuses at Blue
- 1:30Speaker 1: Oven Bakery. Trust me a thick slice of their seedym
- 1:36Speaker 1: Ex Seed or bad Boy, two of my favorite Blue
- 1:39Speaker 1: Oven breads make for a very tasty breakfast. Now let's
- 1:43Speaker 1: get to the game. Ryan Finley's second NFL start did
- 1:48Speaker 1: not get off to a good start as he coughed
- 1:50Speaker 1: up the pig on Cincinnati's fourth play from scrimmage. Finley
- 1:54Speaker 1: ready for the shotgun snap, he catches the ball he's
- 1:57Speaker 1: back to throw, forced to scramble, the ball gets knocked
- 1:59Speaker 1: out from behind. It is loose at the twenty nine
- 2:03Speaker 1: and the Raiders recover. The fumble is forced by Raiders
- 2:06Speaker 1: rookie Max Crosby. Remember the name. The Raiders quickly drove
- 2:12Speaker 1: into the red zone, but the Bengals defense answered with
- 2:15Speaker 1: a huge play first and ten of the Cincinnati seventeen.
- 2:18Speaker 1: They give it to Jacobs again, gaping hole right up
- 2:21Speaker 1: the middle of the field. He loses the ball. It's
- 2:23Speaker 1: scooped up by the Bengals and vigil and Vigil makes
- 2:26Speaker 1: it out to the fifteen yard line as the Bengals
- 2:29Speaker 1: punched it away from Jacobs and get the ball right
- 2:32Speaker 1: back in the red zone. Josh Tupo forced the fumble
- 2:36Speaker 1: and the Bengals immediately went on a twelve play eighty
- 2:39Speaker 1: five yard drive to take the lead. Finley under center
- 2:43Speaker 1: Mixon waiting back at the eleven hands on knees, toss
- 2:46Speaker 1: sweep to the right, and Joe Mixon spins around, stays
- 2:49Speaker 1: on the team running toward the air zone. Touchdown Bengals
- 2:54Speaker 1: as Joe Mixon comes home to the bay and runs
- 2:58Speaker 1: it in for the first time this season. It's the
- 3:02Speaker 1: first rushing touchdown by somebody other than Andy Dalton, and
- 3:07Speaker 1: it was all him that mark just the second time
- 3:09Speaker 1: this year that the Bengals have had a seven nothing lead.
- 3:12Speaker 1: That was also the case in Baltimore, when Brandon Wilson
- 3:16Speaker 1: returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. The Bengals have
- 3:19Speaker 1: never led by more than seven points this season, and
- 3:24Speaker 1: their seven point lead in Oakland disappeared in the second quarter.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Offset I behind Derek Carr on third down and one
- 3:31Speaker 1: at the Cincinnati two car under center fakes a handoff,
- 3:35Speaker 1: looks to throw, bobs it back to the left and
- 3:37Speaker 1: it's caught by Foster Moreau. Nobody within ten yards as
- 3:42Speaker 1: he makes the catch for the Raiders touchdown. Car completed
- 3:45Speaker 1: his first fourteen passes and one play after he finally
- 3:49Speaker 1: threw an incompletion, the sixth year quarterback used his legs
- 3:52Speaker 1: to give the Raiders the lead third down and goal
- 3:55Speaker 1: from the three. Car waiting for a shotgun snap, he retreats,
- 3:58Speaker 1: He looks to throw. Now he will try to take
- 4:01Speaker 1: off and run, and Derek Carr leaps toward the end
- 4:04Speaker 1: zone and makes it in for Raiders touchdown. With eight
- 4:08Speaker 1: seconds left and a half. Randy Bullock was wide left
- 4:10Speaker 1: on a fifty three yard field goal try and the
- 4:13Speaker 1: Raiders had a fourteen seven lead at the break. The
- 4:16Speaker 1: Bengals offense was sputtering, but on the Raiders first drive
- 4:20Speaker 1: of the third quarter, the defense got another takeaway one
- 4:23Speaker 1: deep safety in the middle of the field. Car back
- 4:25Speaker 1: to throw chucks from the middle and it's picked off
- 4:28Speaker 1: by Jesse Bates, his second in his many weeks, and
- 4:32Speaker 1: the Bengals will take over at the forty six yard
- 4:35Speaker 1: line of Oakland. How about Jesse Bates reading that thing
- 4:38Speaker 1: out and going to the middle of the football field.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Jesse Bates says, I got you. Bates interception led to
- 4:44Speaker 1: a bullet field goal that made it fourteen to ten.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Here's Jesse on the play of the Bengals defense. It
- 4:50Speaker 1: just shows that, I mean, a lot of guys aren't
- 4:52Speaker 1: giving up. A lot of guys are still feed into
- 4:54Speaker 1: what Zach is telling us, and it's about us. There's
- 4:57Speaker 1: a lot of people that says we're the worst defense
- 4:59Speaker 1: in the league, and then we come out and, you know,
- 5:01Speaker 1: show what we can do. So UM sucks that we're
- 5:04Speaker 1: not winning. UM, but it is, you know, it's a
- 5:06Speaker 1: good fling. You see that we're playing some good defense.
- 5:09Speaker 1: It was a four point game going to the fourth quarter,
- 5:12Speaker 1: and even after the Raiders kicked a field goal, the
- 5:14Speaker 1: Bengals were within one score. Cincinnati had three possessions in
- 5:19Speaker 1: that final quarter, but couldn't figure out a way to
- 5:22Speaker 1: give Finlay max protection. Finley back to throw, hit from
- 5:27Speaker 1: behind and sacked John Jerry's man. Max Crosby beats him
- 5:33Speaker 1: again and sacks Ryan Finlay. Bengals snap it quickly, Finlay
- 5:37Speaker 1: in trouble and Crosby will sack Ryan Finley on Q
- 5:42Speaker 1: his third sack of the game, takes the shotgun snap,
- 5:45Speaker 1: retreats to the twelve. He's in trouble and he gets sacked.
- 5:48Speaker 1: All four ball comes out. The Bengals recover at the ten.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Max Crosby strikes again, fourth sack of the day. Four
- 5:57Speaker 1: sacks for fourth round draft pick Max Crosby three in
- 6:01Speaker 1: the fourth quarter, Despite that, the Bengals had a golden
- 6:05Speaker 1: opportunity down by seven with roughly five minutes to go.
- 6:09Speaker 1: On third and four at the Oakland twenty seven, Finley
- 6:12Speaker 1: threw a pass that would have given Cincinnati a first
- 6:14Speaker 1: down near the red zone, but it was flat out
- 6:17Speaker 1: dropped by Giovanni Bernard that forced the Bengals to go
- 6:21Speaker 1: for it. On fourth and four. Ericson, Eiffert and Boyd
- 6:25Speaker 1: go out to the left, Willis and Bernard out to
- 6:28Speaker 1: the right. It's an empty backfield with five wide shotgun snap.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Finley flinging it deep for Willis and it is incomplete
- 6:37Speaker 1: at the two yard line. There were two defenders nearby.
- 6:40Speaker 1: The Bengals went for the deep ball and it's incomplete
- 6:43Speaker 1: for Damian Willis. Tyler Boyd and Tyler Eiffert were both
- 6:47Speaker 1: open for a possible first down on the play, but
- 6:50Speaker 1: Finley elected to go deep and the Bengals never threatened again.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Finley finished thirteen for thirty one for one hundred and
- 6:58Speaker 1: fifteen yards, no touchdowns, one interception, and a passer rating
- 7:02Speaker 1: of thirty nine point zero. He was sacked five times,
- 7:06Speaker 1: dropping the Bengals net passing yardage total to seventy three.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Tyler Boyd, the Bengals best healthy receiver, was targeted three
- 7:15Speaker 1: times and had one catch for zero yards, but he
- 7:19Speaker 1: expressed sympathy for the rookie quarterback. Oh man, it's tough,
- 7:23Speaker 1: you know, because the quarterback position is the hardest position
- 7:25Speaker 1: in the field. You know, he got a new checks,
- 7:26Speaker 1: he got a new Uh when when when a check
- 7:29Speaker 1: in uh protection, you gotta you gotta know everything, you know,
- 7:32Speaker 1: song for me to talk about it, it's really hard,
- 7:34Speaker 1: you know, because again, the op position is tough, you know,
- 7:38Speaker 1: and uh I feeled out he would be he would
- 7:40Speaker 1: get better each and every week. You know, just this
- 7:42Speaker 1: week was uh down for all of us, you know,
- 7:45Speaker 1: not just him, but um, we definitely gotta make a
- 7:48Speaker 1: lot more plays to win games. The final score Oakland seventeen,
- 7:51Speaker 1: Cincinnati ten. The Bengals are oh and ten, matching the
- 7:56Speaker 1: nineteen ninety three team for the worst start Enfranchise history.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Going back to last year, they've dropped twelve in a
- 8:03Speaker 1: row and that's the longest losing streak in team history.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Here are alex ericson n C j Uzama were fighting, um,
- 8:13Speaker 1: fighting for a pride or just fighting for that first win,
- 8:17Speaker 1: and um, you know, it's the battle this up to
- 8:23Speaker 1: this part, it's been tough and obviously we haven't had
- 8:26Speaker 1: much go our way and just haven't been able to
- 8:28Speaker 1: find a way to win. And so we're just fighting
- 8:30Speaker 1: and try to find that win. I you know, it's
- 8:32Speaker 1: been it's been a challenge everything emotionally, physically. Um, you know,
- 8:37Speaker 1: it's it's hard because we put a lot into it
- 8:39Speaker 1: and we we're doing everything we can to win, and um,
- 8:43Speaker 1: you know, we're just not there yet. Throughout it is
- 8:44Speaker 1: we're not getting it done and we're not making those
- 8:47Speaker 1: players and we're not doing what it takes to win.
- 8:50Speaker 1: And no fingers should be pointed because no one players
- 8:53Speaker 1: in this locker room. And they know that. I mean
- 8:56Speaker 1: we know that no one player is playing. You know,
- 8:59Speaker 1: we're having one play here, one play there, and it's
- 9:02Speaker 1: each of us. So it's more of a we need
- 9:05Speaker 1: to look ourselves in the mirror and figure out, you know,
- 9:07Speaker 1: how we can correct it, how we can just get
- 9:09Speaker 1: our crap together, like our personal things that we need
- 9:13Speaker 1: to get together and you know, come together as a
- 9:16Speaker 1: team and get the job done. There were a couple
- 9:18Speaker 1: of bright spots. The defense played well enough to win,
- 9:21Speaker 1: and for the second straight week, the running game was outstanding.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Joe Mixon finished with eighty six yards on fifteen carries,
- 9:28Speaker 1: and the Bengals finished with a season high one hundred
- 9:32Speaker 1: and seventy three rushing yards. I talked to Mixing after
- 9:35Speaker 1: the game. Team ran for more than one hundred and
- 9:38Speaker 1: seventy today, Joe after one fifty something last week, do
- 9:41Speaker 1: you feel like you've got that part of the game
- 9:43Speaker 1: ironed out? Honestly enough? For real, it wasn't enough. I
- 9:48Speaker 1: should have definitely had more, But I mean it is
- 9:51Speaker 1: what it is. We figure we got to figure it
- 9:53Speaker 1: out and gotta get better. Like I said, it wasn't
- 9:55Speaker 1: enough for us to win a game. You had eighty six,
- 9:58Speaker 1: You scored your first rushing time each down of the year.
- 10:00Speaker 1: You did it close to home. Describe that feeling. Uh,
- 10:04Speaker 1: it was a feeling like no other, you know what
- 10:05Speaker 1: I'm saying. Uh, blessed to be in this position, to
- 10:08Speaker 1: play in front of the home crowd and um, you know,
- 10:11Speaker 1: try to display you know what I've been used to doing,
- 10:14Speaker 1: and uh that's bawling up. But came a little short,
- 10:17Speaker 1: and uh, you know, we lost. So you know, it's
- 10:20Speaker 1: not really a good feeling, you know what I'm saying,
- 10:22Speaker 1: But it is what it is. Guys jumped ahead seven nothing.
- 10:26Speaker 1: It was a tight game throughout. Did you have that
- 10:29Speaker 1: feeling that, man, if we could just make one play,
- 10:32Speaker 1: this is the this is the day we pull it
- 10:33Speaker 1: out easily for sure. I mean they they pulled it out. Um,
- 10:42Speaker 1: you know, it's frustrating honestly about what happened, but they
- 10:45Speaker 1: pulled it out. And uh, we definitely left left some
- 10:48Speaker 1: plays out there that I wish we could take back.
- 10:50Speaker 1: But it is what it is. Gotta get better. Sadly,
- 10:54Speaker 1: Audent Tate's injury cast a Paul over the locker room.
- 10:57Speaker 1: I'm sure that one is bothering everybody in this room. No,
- 11:00Speaker 1: it definitely is. Tay made a huge conversion. Um, I
- 11:04Speaker 1: probably was one of the biggest players at the game,
- 11:06Speaker 1: and that kept us alive, and uh, you know, it's
- 11:09Speaker 1: just sucks, you know, to see a player go down,
- 11:11Speaker 1: especially him, and uh, you know, a player we needed.
- 11:15Speaker 1: But I mean we fell short and I wish we
- 11:17Speaker 1: could get it Beck. So I was Ryan's second start
- 11:19Speaker 1: with some growing pains. I guess that's to be expected.
- 11:22Speaker 1: What would you what do you say to him at
- 11:23Speaker 1: this point? Um, I mean I can't leave it up
- 11:27Speaker 1: to him, you know what I'm saying. To win the games.
- 11:31Speaker 1: We definitely had an opportunity to win. But I mean
- 11:35Speaker 1: it's the same thing every week, falling short, and uh,
- 11:38Speaker 1: it's frustrating, but I just gotta get better. You know,
- 11:42Speaker 1: wasn't enough to get it done. Um, you know it
- 11:45Speaker 1: sucks to say. Um, I mean honestly, I really don't
- 11:48Speaker 1: know what to say because, um, you know everybody has
- 11:51Speaker 1: been the same thing every week, you know what I'm saying.
- 11:53Speaker 1: So it's definitely frustrating. Uh, everybody know, we gotta get better,
- 11:58Speaker 1: and you know, the sex to be in this position,
- 12:02Speaker 1: but you got to overcome it and you gotta get better.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Following up on my question for Joe about autumn, Tate,
- 12:08Speaker 1: the Bengals wide receiver, was able to travel home with
- 12:11Speaker 1: the Bengals after the game and was in the locker
- 12:13Speaker 1: room on Monday, no longer wearing a neck brace. According
- 12:17Speaker 1: to Zach Taylor, Tate has a cervical strain and is
- 12:21Speaker 1: in concussion protocol. Speaking of Zach, he spent three and
- 12:25Speaker 1: a half minutes with Lap after the game. This is
- 12:28Speaker 1: the fifth game that's been decided by a touchdown and
- 12:31Speaker 1: less than unfortunately, none have gone your way with the Raiders,
- 12:33Speaker 1: to flip side of it's their seventh and they've won
- 12:36Speaker 1: six of them. So you know, they're they're tough to
- 12:39Speaker 1: beat down the stretch, particularly at home. They are. You know,
- 12:42Speaker 1: we just we got to do more to generate a
- 12:44Speaker 1: little more offensive on the fourth quarter and give ourself
- 12:46Speaker 1: a chance because our defense came out in the second
- 12:47Speaker 1: half and hold them to three and really did a
- 12:49Speaker 1: lot of things we're asked them to do. And so
- 12:51Speaker 1: it's frustrating that we couldn't get a John. Every coach
- 12:55Speaker 1: on this point team, every player on this team kept
- 12:56Speaker 1: fighting through that fourth quarter, and boyd we're gonna have done.
- 12:58Speaker 1: It just wasn't enough. Max Crosby gets four quarterback sacks
- 13:03Speaker 1: and that's uh, I mean, he's definitely. He's definitely interesting
- 13:08Speaker 1: to watch with his hands and everything. But I know
- 13:10Speaker 1: that has to be frustrating where you know, a guy
- 13:12Speaker 1: like that picks up four quarterback sacks. Yeah, it is.
- 13:14Speaker 1: You know, we got to do a better job up
- 13:16Speaker 1: front and and uh, we got to help those guys,
- 13:18Speaker 1: you know, as a play caller, and that's frustrating to
- 13:20Speaker 1: see that. You get your running game going to the
- 13:23Speaker 1: tune of over one hundred and seventy yards. You know,
- 13:25Speaker 1: Joe Mixon had over eighty of him on fifteen carries.
- 13:29Speaker 1: So it continues, the running game continues to arrow up
- 13:33Speaker 1: for you. Is that a good sign? Obviously? It is.
- 13:36Speaker 1: You know, it's I think we're training in the way
- 13:38Speaker 1: that you want to play football defense, swarm into the
- 13:39Speaker 1: ball and create some turnovers and on offense, establishing the
- 13:42Speaker 1: run game. It's just we're gonna do a better job
- 13:43Speaker 1: with our play actions and our nakeds when we get
- 13:45Speaker 1: him called executing them and creating some explosives that way.
- 13:48Speaker 1: But overall, I think we're turning in the right direction
- 13:50Speaker 1: there in the run game. Odd and Tate, I don't
- 13:53Speaker 1: know how much you can you can fill us in,
- 13:54Speaker 1: but that's as a as a player. I mean, I
- 13:57Speaker 1: always hated when you know, a cart came out there
- 13:59Speaker 1: and took somebody off the football field, and so you know,
- 14:04Speaker 1: Auden was in that in that situation. But it looked
- 14:06Speaker 1: like he was moving everything, which was a good sign.
- 14:09Speaker 1: And I know you caution is the name of the game.
- 14:11Speaker 1: You want to error on the side of caution. Can
- 14:13Speaker 1: you give us any update on audin take It sounds like, um,
- 14:17Speaker 1: he's left the hospital and we'll see if we get
- 14:19Speaker 1: him back there to night in Cincinnati. But that's encouraging
- 14:22Speaker 1: to see. But I don't have a lot of information
- 14:23Speaker 1: outside of that, but he might be able to travel back. Well,
- 14:26Speaker 1: I'll find out. I'm kind of just getting first word
- 14:29Speaker 1: of that, but hopefully that's true. So your defense comes
- 14:33Speaker 1: in to Oakland. They'd given up twelve sacks on the season,
- 14:38Speaker 1: and the defense gets three. They've given up eight turnovers.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Fourth view us in the NFL. Your defense gets too.
- 14:44Speaker 1: You know, defense holds him to seventeen points. I mean defensively,
- 14:47Speaker 1: the overall effort you have to be pretty pleased with.
- 14:49Speaker 1: I was. I thought, especially in the second half, is
- 14:52Speaker 1: very encouraging. I know, the quarterback got off to a
- 14:54Speaker 1: hot start there to start the game, but to hold
- 14:56Speaker 1: him the three points in the second half on the road,
- 14:58Speaker 1: that's that's gonna give us a chance to win. And
- 15:01Speaker 1: so that was encouraging to see from them. We talked
- 15:03Speaker 1: to Ryan a little bit and obviously he's pretty disappointed
- 15:06Speaker 1: and you know, didn't didn't offer a whole lot, and
- 15:09Speaker 1: understandably so was Paul Gunther. Did he do anything differently,
- 15:13Speaker 1: did he increase his blitzch percentage, is loading the box
- 15:17Speaker 1: percentage or anything like that, or he just did he
- 15:19Speaker 1: do what Paul Gunther does. No, it was pretty much
- 15:21Speaker 1: the defense we expected to see, and we just have
- 15:23Speaker 1: to bet a job executing. That's that's what it boils
- 15:26Speaker 1: down to, getting plays made when they're there. It is, Yeah,
- 15:29Speaker 1: that's that's frustrating when it doesn't happen. So overall, you know, Ryan,
- 15:34Speaker 1: like I said, he's he's pretty uh not not pleased
- 15:37Speaker 1: with his performance. I guess you're you always hope to have,
- 15:40Speaker 1: you know, the first first game be a building block
- 15:43Speaker 1: and build from there. Obviously this one didn't turn out
- 15:45Speaker 1: like anybody had hoped. No, it was hard. You know,
- 15:47Speaker 1: it was a game we came in expecting to win.
- 15:49Speaker 1: And we didn't get it done. And so that's a
- 15:50Speaker 1: frustrating fight home. Before we got on the plane, Lap
- 15:53Speaker 1: and I spent a few minutes discussing what happened. The
- 15:57Speaker 1: Bengals ran for more than one hundred and seventy yards
- 15:59Speaker 1: in this game, but when you factor in sacks, they
- 16:02Speaker 1: had seventy three yards in the passing game. Obviously that's
- 16:06Speaker 1: not going to get the job done. It's not, particularly
- 16:08Speaker 1: in today's NFL. There's no question about it. I mean,
- 16:11Speaker 1: you know, some of the yards rushing were scrambles by
- 16:14Speaker 1: Ryan Finley, once up the gut for over twenty yards
- 16:16Speaker 1: when he caught them in man coverage and found a lane.
- 16:18Speaker 1: And one time on a you know, a naked came
- 16:21Speaker 1: outside the pocket and took it a field for over
- 16:24Speaker 1: twenty yards. But still with that said, Joe mix in
- 16:26Speaker 1: fifteen carries over eighty yards. I think the adjustment that
- 16:30Speaker 1: they've made in the running game, where they have some
- 16:31Speaker 1: gap plays you know they'll they'll pin and pull, you know,
- 16:35Speaker 1: penel down lineman and pull others, is paying dividends. And
- 16:38Speaker 1: you know they're mixing it in now with the inside
- 16:40Speaker 1: outside zone stuff. So I think defenses are a little
- 16:43Speaker 1: bit off balanced with it, and they're they're steadily building
- 16:46Speaker 1: on the on the running game, but the passing game
- 16:49Speaker 1: is going in the opposite direction. So I mean, really,
- 16:52Speaker 1: you hold a team to seventeen points in the road defensively,
- 16:55Speaker 1: special teams did their job. Running game, I mean it
- 16:59Speaker 1: boiled down to the Bengals did not get enough in
- 17:01Speaker 1: the air. They didn't make enough plays to win this
- 17:03Speaker 1: football game. And it's basically lack of execution on their
- 17:07Speaker 1: side as much as anything. We might have some fans
- 17:10Speaker 1: at Miami University or Ohio University watching this segment. They
- 17:14Speaker 1: remember Max Crosby from Eastern Michigan. He used to terrorize
- 17:18Speaker 1: the mac. He had twenty sacks over the last two seasons.
- 17:21Speaker 1: It felt like he had twenty today. Four sacks from
- 17:24Speaker 1: Max Crosby. Shouldn't happen, flat out period, shouldn't happen. I mean,
- 17:31Speaker 1: you know, at some point, if if you have a
- 17:32Speaker 1: guy that's given you that kind of trouble, you're gonna
- 17:34Speaker 1: have to give him some give a tackle, some edge,
- 17:36Speaker 1: some help with a you know you have an edge Russia.
- 17:38Speaker 1: That's that's winning, not to chip and things like that.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Slide the line, do some things. But Max, he should
- 17:45Speaker 1: not just beat offensive linement for four quarterback sacks. I
- 17:49Speaker 1: don't care what the situation is, you know that that's unacceptable.
- 17:52Speaker 1: And that was, you know, one of the reasons why
- 17:55Speaker 1: the Bengal struggled so much in the throwing the football.
- 17:57Speaker 1: I mean he was Ryan Finley was under dressed more
- 18:00Speaker 1: than he should have been. To be quite honest, it's
- 18:02Speaker 1: getting noisy here at the College cum Let's quickly touch
- 18:04Speaker 1: on the Bengals defense. Josh Tupo force to fumble that
- 18:07Speaker 1: was recovered by Nick Vigil. Jesse Bates had an interception
- 18:11Speaker 1: for the second consecutive week. They had a lot of
- 18:13Speaker 1: tackles for loss and three sacks in this game. It
- 18:17Speaker 1: was one of the better performances the defense has had
- 18:19Speaker 1: this year, right, and when you look at it, I
- 18:21Speaker 1: mean the Raiders they'd only given up twelve sacks, fourth
- 18:24Speaker 1: fewerist in the NFL. The Bengals got three. They'd they'd
- 18:28Speaker 1: only given up eight turnovers, again top five in the NFL.
- 18:31Speaker 1: The Bengals got two in this football game. So defensively,
- 18:35Speaker 1: there was some improvement. I thought there was some movement
- 18:37Speaker 1: upfront with the defensive line that was causing the mammoth
- 18:40Speaker 1: offensive line of the Raiders, you know, problems. They're behemous.
- 18:43Speaker 1: They're six six, three thirty five plus on an average basis,
- 18:46Speaker 1: and you can't just stand there and take them on.
- 18:48Speaker 1: And the Bengals did a good job of hitting some
- 18:50Speaker 1: gaps and and moving some people, moving some people around,
- 18:53Speaker 1: and they did. They accumulated, you know, overhandful of tackles
- 18:57Speaker 1: for lost to go with three quarterback sacks. If the
- 19:00Speaker 1: season ended today, the Oakland Raiders would be a playoff
- 19:03Speaker 1: team after going four and twelve a year ago. Perhaps
- 19:06Speaker 1: the Bengals can have a turnaround like that next year,
- 19:09Speaker 1: but this year they are o and ten in the
- 19:12Speaker 1: reason during that situation the seventh time this year the
- 19:15Speaker 1: Raiders have had a game decided by a touchdown unless
- 19:18Speaker 1: they won six of them by eight points. Unless they
- 19:20Speaker 1: won six. The Bengals have been in that situation five times,
- 19:23Speaker 1: oh for five. Get to win some close ones to
- 19:26Speaker 1: be competitive in the National Football League. Up next a
- 19:29Speaker 1: home game against the Steelers in their first game after
- 19:32Speaker 1: the Mason Rudolph Miles Garrett incident. The Steelers quarterback has
- 19:37Speaker 1: his helmet back, but he won't have his Pro Bowl center.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Since more Case Pouncey was suspended for three games for
- 19:44Speaker 1: punching and kicking Garrett, the Steelers have beaten the Bengals
- 19:49Speaker 1: nine straight times. Now time for this week's fund Facts interview,
- 19:53Speaker 1: where we get to know the person under the pads.
- 19:56Speaker 1: This week, it's a thirty three year old offensive lineman
- 19:59Speaker 1: who is lighted to be back in the NFL after
- 20:02Speaker 1: being out of football last year. Time for some fun
- 20:05Speaker 1: facts with offensive lineman John Jerry from Batesville, Mississippi, originally
- 20:10Speaker 1: population approximately seven thousand, five hundred. What's a kid do
- 20:15Speaker 1: for fun? Growing up in Batesville? You play football. I
- 20:18Speaker 1: mean that's one thing about it. When Friday night lights
- 20:21Speaker 1: going on in my hometown, everybody shut down, and your
- 20:25Speaker 1: high school is a powerhouse. When you were there, they
- 20:28Speaker 1: had a winning streak of eighty nine games, the third
- 20:30Speaker 1: longest in high school football history. Right yeah, yeah, you know,
- 20:34Speaker 1: I think I wanted the first four to five of that.
- 20:38Speaker 1: So some definitely be proud of a look back on
- 20:41Speaker 1: and probably somebody probably won't never be broken in the
- 20:44Speaker 1: state of Mississippi. We're doing fun facts with John Jerry
- 20:46Speaker 1: or from a big family, right right, yeah, I have
- 20:49Speaker 1: six brothers and pretty big family, and people might recognize
- 20:56Speaker 1: one of your older brothers, Paray, who was a first
- 20:58Speaker 1: round draft pick by the Atlanta Falcon spent five years
- 21:01Speaker 1: in the NFL before he had some injuries. You two
- 21:04Speaker 1: share the bedroom as kids, correct, Yeah, that'll be correct. Yeah,
- 21:07Speaker 1: we definitely don't share the bedrooms sharey bumbaz And until
- 21:11Speaker 1: we grew up a little bit. We didn't take us
- 21:13Speaker 1: a long to grow about it. That though. What kind
- 21:16Speaker 1: of battles were there between the Jerry boys? Us? Too
- 21:19Speaker 1: much one anything personal about it was just you know,
- 21:23Speaker 1: type of typical motivation things and doing stuff like that.
- 21:26Speaker 1: My mom had put up with us going at each other,
- 21:28Speaker 1: see don't She wasn't going for that, but she taught.
- 21:31Speaker 1: Oh yeah, she was definitely tough. So after high school
- 21:35Speaker 1: you spend a year at hardgrade military academy. How regimented
- 21:39Speaker 1: his student life at hardgrade military. Uh, it could be
- 21:43Speaker 1: difficult if you make it difficult beds the same as
- 21:45Speaker 1: I live back on the now. I think that was
- 21:47Speaker 1: probably the best year of my life because coming from
- 21:52Speaker 1: high school and not doing well academically and we just
- 21:55Speaker 1: learned how to do things in structure. I think that
- 21:58Speaker 1: really helped me out and propelled me for longevity. Early
- 22:02Speaker 1: wake up uniforms, bad check, the whole bit. Well, oh yeah,
- 22:06Speaker 1: you got all that. You know, formation, you marched the brooklist,
- 22:09Speaker 1: you marsh the lunch, you marched the dinner, and um,
- 22:13Speaker 1: it's I mean, it's kind of basically like jail, you know,
- 22:15Speaker 1: you got we got our own restroom and everybody we
- 22:18Speaker 1: had to make notes and putty, rotate the list each week,
- 22:22Speaker 1: and different guys. You get to do different things. So
- 22:25Speaker 1: it was definitely a fun experience. We're doing fun facts
- 22:28Speaker 1: with John Jerry. You grew up in Mississippi. Your older
- 22:31Speaker 1: brother went to Ole Miss. You went to Ole Miss.
- 22:33Speaker 1: Was a kind of pre ordained that you were going
- 22:35Speaker 1: to go there some day. I think anytime with college
- 22:39Speaker 1: is ten minutes from your MoMA house. I think it
- 22:42Speaker 1: kind of makes it hard to go anywhere else. Um,
- 22:45Speaker 1: that was a lot of fun though, especially you know,
- 22:46Speaker 1: we're having my brother and my cousin there. That was
- 22:48Speaker 1: that was a lot of fun. My mom being able
- 22:51Speaker 1: to come see me play every single home and that
- 22:53Speaker 1: was the most important thing for me. Was she like
- 22:56Speaker 1: a team mom? Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure. She
- 22:58Speaker 1: was definitely a team. Um. I could think back now
- 23:00Speaker 1: on holidays. You know, she couldn't big meals and bring
- 23:03Speaker 1: them off a bunch of guys who weren't able to
- 23:05Speaker 1: travel homes. It's a lot of fun. Your first head
- 23:08Speaker 1: coach at Old miss was ed Orger Rode, now doing
- 23:11Speaker 1: so well at LSU. He's got such a thick, cajing accent,
- 23:15Speaker 1: such a gravelly voice. I have a hard time understanding him.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Did you No, not at all? Man from Mississippion. People
- 23:22Speaker 1: talk probably worse than he does. So at the end
- 23:25Speaker 1: of the day, you know, coach is doing a great job. Man,
- 23:27Speaker 1: I'm not surprised. I'm not surprised at all. You were
- 23:30Speaker 1: a third round draft pick by the Miami Dolphins. Described
- 23:33Speaker 1: the draft experience. It was amazing, definitely fun of spirits,
- 23:37Speaker 1: you know, having an older brother that kind of went
- 23:39Speaker 1: through that and kind of help to prepare for us,
- 23:41Speaker 1: so you kind of know what's expect a little bit,
- 23:43Speaker 1: but definitely a lot of assignment with the unknown, not
- 23:46Speaker 1: knowing when you're gonna get drafted. But you're definitely grateful
- 23:49Speaker 1: for whoever take the chance on you. How were your
- 23:51Speaker 1: four years in Miami? It was a lot of fun.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Definitely met a lot of friends for life and greatest
- 23:56Speaker 1: spirit for me. I learned a lot there, especially struggling
- 24:00Speaker 1: early in my career with not doing things the right
- 24:02Speaker 1: way and not being accountable, but not definitely come a
- 24:05Speaker 1: long way and to see myself now ten years later.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Definitely surprising or visiting with John Jerry after your time
- 24:13Speaker 1: in Miami assigned with the New York Giants and played
- 24:15Speaker 1: for Tom Coughlin. Did you enjoy it? I enjoyed it, man,
- 24:19Speaker 1: it was It was a lot of fun getting to
- 24:22Speaker 1: go learn upon the coach Cofflin. A lot of guys
- 24:25Speaker 1: can't do that, so I mean that says a lot
- 24:28Speaker 1: about the people who can go and play for coach Cofflin,
- 24:30Speaker 1: who's a great guy and a great man. What was
- 24:33Speaker 1: the best part about living close to the Big Apple? Uh,
- 24:36Speaker 1: there's so much to do. I mean it's there's so
- 24:39Speaker 1: much to do. And then just being a New York
- 24:42Speaker 1: pierd I think that was definitely Somebody didn't really um
- 24:46Speaker 1: in sitcipate being a lot of fun, but it was
- 24:47Speaker 1: definitely fun. Four years Did you go to Broadway? Did
- 24:51Speaker 1: your wife shop a lot there? Did you take full advantage? Yeah?
- 24:54Speaker 1: I took full advantage. I know, I got the chance
- 24:56Speaker 1: to see the World Trade Center or Statue of Liberty,
- 24:59Speaker 1: U Museums. I did pretty much everything you could do
- 25:04Speaker 1: that in those four years. I got a chance to
- 25:06Speaker 1: tour everything around the city, which is a lot of fun.
- 25:08Speaker 1: It was a big city and it's a lot to do.
- 25:11Speaker 1: So after your time with the Giants, you got let
- 25:13Speaker 1: go at the final cuts prior to last season, and
- 25:16Speaker 1: you spend a year out of football. What did you
- 25:18Speaker 1: miss the most? I will say the camoderie, being around
- 25:23Speaker 1: the guys every single day, and I mean anybody could
- 25:27Speaker 1: say that you won't miss it, but you definitely miss
- 25:29Speaker 1: that part. Just just being in the locker room around
- 25:31Speaker 1: of guys in the game day. I don't I don't
- 25:33Speaker 1: think it's nothing like waking up on game day and
- 25:35Speaker 1: come to the locker room. Did you watch football? I
- 25:39Speaker 1: didn't watch NFL football a law, So I mean unless
- 25:43Speaker 1: it was like Monday night and it was one of
- 25:45Speaker 1: my buddies playing, I watch it. But other than that
- 25:47Speaker 1: and too much watch too much football. So you've told
- 25:50Speaker 1: us that you thought your career might be over, and
- 25:53Speaker 1: your wife convinced you to stick with it, right, right, Yeah. Yeah,
- 25:57Speaker 1: she definitely convinced me to stick with it, and then
- 26:00Speaker 1: you know, encouraged me to get out the housing and
- 26:02Speaker 1: go back out to the Arizona. And I actually trained
- 26:05Speaker 1: the entire time. I didn't play last year, fortunate enough
- 26:09Speaker 1: to be able to go out to the Charles Billy
- 26:10Speaker 1: and trained that entire year last year, and just he
- 26:14Speaker 1: definitely helped me slay prepared and for this opportunity that
- 26:17Speaker 1: I got. Did the lack of wear and tear help
- 26:20Speaker 1: you physically? Yeah? I think anytime you can get a
- 26:24Speaker 1: year off from doing something, but not just taking a
- 26:27Speaker 1: year off, but actually just still doing something aboudy working
- 26:30Speaker 1: out and stuff like that, I think I'll definitely helped myself.
- 26:33Speaker 1: All right. A few more fun facts for offensive lineman
- 26:35Speaker 1: John Jerry. Do you have a hidden talent? Nah? I
- 26:41Speaker 1: wouldn't say I have it in talent. You know. I
- 26:42Speaker 1: played a lot of Xbox That's about it. What are
- 26:45Speaker 1: your games? Some of every I play something everything? I
- 26:48Speaker 1: don't play, um not just stuck on Call of duty
- 26:52Speaker 1: or fort Night. Like most guys, I'm pretty verttile. All right,
- 26:56Speaker 1: is there something that you're absolutely terrible at? Uh? Well,
- 27:03Speaker 1: well lead that to my wife. She was a lot
- 27:06Speaker 1: of things, but I don't think it's anything. I'm just
- 27:10Speaker 1: really terrible at that. I will say I'm terrible ad
- 27:13Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure I have my wife and should tell
- 27:15Speaker 1: you a lot. All right, I look forward to meeting her.
- 27:17Speaker 1: I will ask her that question. If you could meet
- 27:19Speaker 1: anybody in history, athlete, politician, religious figure, entertainer, who would
- 27:26Speaker 1: it be. I'll probably Jackie Robinson. Just somebody to go
- 27:31Speaker 1: through what he went through and to still to be
- 27:34Speaker 1: able to have that focus and determination to make the
- 27:37Speaker 1: most of the opportunities that they had. That's a great choice.
- 27:40Speaker 1: All right. You live in Memphis now in the off season,
- 27:42Speaker 1: is that correct? That'll be correct? All right. Memphis is
- 27:45Speaker 1: a big tourist town. If somebody wanted to visit Memphis,
- 27:48Speaker 1: where should they eat? What should they do? Go to
- 27:52Speaker 1: billscreet That's exactly where you gotta go. I mean, you'd
- 27:56Speaker 1: be able to find anything, any type of food you want.
- 28:00Speaker 1: You are going to be in the South, so it's
- 28:01Speaker 1: gonna be a lot of fry foods. So the Memphis
- 28:04Speaker 1: is known for its barbecue. I think you come to Memphis,
- 28:07Speaker 1: you gotta just go downtown to build screen and get
- 28:09Speaker 1: some barbecue rendezvous or something a little bit more off
- 28:12Speaker 1: the beaten path. Uh, it all depend on what you like.
- 28:16Speaker 1: You know, it's a lot of the good rest. I
- 28:17Speaker 1: got a lot of favorite restaurant. I can't just name one,
- 28:20Speaker 1: but this is a lot of good places. The Pyramid,
- 28:23Speaker 1: the old basketball arena there is now the world's biggest
- 28:27Speaker 1: bass pro shop. You're nodding, you're excited. If that's something
- 28:32Speaker 1: you enjoy, I'll be in there all the time. Yeah,
- 28:34Speaker 1: that's that's probably my favorite story Memphis. To be honest,
- 28:37Speaker 1: I'm always in Best Pro Shop getting something. I have
- 28:40Speaker 1: a big legg it right out behind my house. Fish
- 28:42Speaker 1: a lot and from Mississippi like to hunt a lot,
- 28:45Speaker 1: And I'm definitely always off in there looking at stuff.
- 28:48Speaker 1: And you know, you can go all the way up
- 28:49Speaker 1: to the ceiling and look out across the entire city
- 28:53Speaker 1: once you go up. So it's a lot of fun.
- 28:55Speaker 1: They got a hotel and there it's a it's a
- 28:58Speaker 1: one stop shop. I promise you that this best pro
- 29:01Speaker 1: shop is Ebbing. It's the most amazing use of a
- 29:04Speaker 1: former basketball arena in the world. Yes, sure, I would
- 29:07Speaker 1: agree with that. All right, you are officially off the
- 29:09Speaker 1: hot seat, appreciate the time. Best elect the rest of
- 29:12Speaker 1: the year. All right, thank you, thanks for having me,
- 29:14Speaker 1: Thanks to John Jerry, and we want to remind you
- 29:17Speaker 1: to come out and join us at our on location
- 29:19Speaker 1: radio shows this week. On Wednesday night, from six to eight,
