- 0:02- Welcome to this edition of "Pop Culture Junkie Pop."
- 0:10Today I am joined by my producer, Jeff.
- 0:13Hi, Jeff.
- 0:13- Hi, Shauna.
- 0:15- I wish you were Olivia, but I guess you will do.
- 0:18- I wish I was Olivia too.
- 0:20- Don't we all?
- 0:21I am gonna talk about a movie that I watched recently
- 0:25that I'd never heard of and it was a clip came up
- 0:29on Instagram Reels and kind of enticed me.
- 0:33So I am really into disaster and end of the world movies
- 0:37and this one is called "Perfect Sense."
- 0:41It came out in 2012.
- 0:43It stars Ewan McGregor and Eva Green.
- 0:46So he's a chef.
- 0:48She's an epidemiologist, not a very good one,
- 0:51but that's neither here nor there.
- 0:52(laughs)
- 0:53And a disease is taking over the world
- 0:56where humankind is losing their senses one by one.
- 1:01So I won't spoil it even though it came out in 2012,
- 1:06but it's not an exactly happy movie,
- 1:10but it's very romantic and introspective.
- 1:14So in the beginning, you are overcome with this bout
- 1:18of just hysterical crying and grief
- 1:22and then you lose your sense of smell.
- 1:25And it just wipes out everyone's sense of smell.
- 1:28It's set in England, but we kind of assume
- 1:30that it's worldwide because it kind of shows
- 1:33different cultures and different people
- 1:35dealing with this.
- 1:37And at first, everyone's like, "Oh, sence of smell's lost,
- 1:40I could deal with that kind of sucks,"
- 1:41but whatever.
- 1:42The second one that comes down for them
- 1:44is their sense of taste.
- 1:46First character is a chef, so that kind of sucks for him.
- 1:50And then slowly but surely each sense
- 1:53is kind of ripped away from humanity
- 1:55and it's like, "What do we still have a left
- 1:57if we are losing the sense of smell and taste
- 2:02and hearing what is still left?
- 2:04How do we still connect with people?"
- 2:06And it's these two people falling in love
- 2:08in the midst of this disaster.
- 2:10And it was sexy and scary and depressing.
- 2:14And I really liked it.
- 2:16So I'm gonna pop this strange movie called Perfect Sense.
- 2:21I ended up paying $3.99 for it on Amazon Prime.
- 2:25I'm not sure if there's somewhere you can stream it for free.
- 2:28I kind of got impatient with searching on my television,
- 2:31but it's definitely on Prime,
- 2:33so I'm gonna go ahead and Pop that.
- 2:35And Jeff, it is on to you.
- 2:38What would you like to Pop for us this week?
- 2:40- Well, my favorite genre of movies is movies about movies
- 2:45and there's a television series about movies
- 2:48called The Studio on Apple TV+
- 2:51and it stars Seth Rogan and he's producer
- 2:54and he directed all the episode with Evan Goldberg, his partner.
- 2:58And it's got a great supporting cast.
- 3:00It's got Catherine O'Hara, Ike Barinholtz,
- 3:03Katherine Hahn.
- 3:04- Oh, this is a sick cast!
- 3:06- And Bryan Cranston appears.
- 3:08And it's about a guy because Seth Rogan plays Matt Romick.
- 3:12And he gets promoted to the head of the studio
- 3:16or the working head of the studio.
- 3:17I don't think he's the head, but he's up there.
- 3:20And he may not be ready for this
- 3:23because he considers himself an artist
- 3:26which art is really done in Hollywood anymore.
- 3:29It's a business.
- 3:30And so let's look at that from that perspective,
- 3:32of trying to do art when the goal is actually make money.
- 3:36- Yeah.
- 3:37- But it's also the funniest show I think I've ever seen.
- 3:40It's really dark sometimes.
- 3:42It gets really awkward sometimes.
- 3:44Do you know what a winner is in film?
- 3:48Like a one shot, like a hallway scene
- 3:50where the camera follows somebody down, right?
- 3:52- And it goes on for a long time.
- 3:54They do a whole episode.
- 3:56That's a winner.
- 3:57The episode's called the winner
- 3:58and they're shooting a winner in this episode.
- 4:00- Oh, that's amazing.
- 4:01- And it's just incredible to watch.
- 4:03And you get exhausted just waiting for them to cut away
- 4:07and they never do.
- 4:07- I have heard of this show.
- 4:11And I definitely think it's kind of gone under the radar,
- 4:14but as it's gone on longer, more and more people
- 4:16are kind of like talking about it and discovering it.
- 4:19And I love Seth Rogen.
- 4:20I think he is absolutely hilarious.
- 4:22I will never be a hater of his unless he does something terrible.
- 4:25Please don't do anything terrible.
- 4:27Seth Rogen, I want to keep thinking you're funny.
- 4:29(laughing)
- 4:30- Well, it was just nominated for a whole bunch of awards.
- 4:33- Awesome.
- 4:34And where did you say it's streaming again?
- 4:36- It's on Apple Plus.
- 4:37- Apple Plus.
- 4:38The one streaming platform I don't have, of course.
- 4:41I think I'm gonna have to do it.
- 4:42I'm gonna have to just--
- 4:43- How do you watch Ted Lasso?
- 4:45- I don't.
- 4:46I know, Haley, the Brave is listening.
- 4:48I promise I'm gonna watch Ted Lasso eventually.
- 4:51I need to get that one final streaming service.
- 4:55Awesome.
- 4:56So our pops this week are perfect cents,
- 4:59and you can watch that on Amazon Prime.
- 5:01And the studio that you can watch on Apple TV.
- 5:05And that will do it for this week's Pop.
