- Lucas: Hey, welcome back to Learn Spanish with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 94, can you believe it? Lucas: I know. It's been a lot of fun. And today I thought we'd go somewhere exciting. Luna: Ohh, where? The zoo? Lucas: Exactly. The zoo. So we're going to learn some animal names in Spanish. Luna: I love animals. Okay, hit me with the first one. Lucas: First up: el león. That's the lion. Luna: El león. Lion. Got it. Lucas: Good. Now try saying it slowly: el león. Luna: El león. El león. Lucas: Perfect. Next: el elefante. The elephant. Luna: El elefante. That's a big word. Lucas: It is. El elefante. One more time. Luna: El elefante. I like how it sounds. Lucas: Me too. Now: el mono. That's the monkey. Luna: El mono. Short and sweet. Lucas: Yes. El mono. Try it. Luna: El mono. Got it. Lucas: Great. Now let's do one more: el pingüino. The penguin. Luna: El pingüino. Oh, that's cute. El pingüino. Lucas: And finally: la jirafa. The giraffe. Luna: La jirafa. Why is it la and not el? Lucas: Good question. In Spanish, nouns have gender. La is feminine. Jirafa is feminine, so la jirafa. Luna: Ah, so la jirafa. That makes sense. Lucas: Exactly. Now let's put them in a simple sentence. 'Me gusta el león.' That means 'I like the lion.' Luna: Me gusta el león. I like the lion. Lucas: Yes. You can change the animal: Me gusta el elefante, Me gusta el mono, Me gusta el pingüino, Me gusta la jirafa. Luna: So Me gusta works for all of them. That's easy. Lucas: Exactly. Let's practice: Me gusta el león. Luna: Me gusta el león. Lucas: Me gusta la jirafa. Luna: Me gusta la jirafa. Oof, that's a bit of a tongue twister. Lucas: You did great. Now imagine we're at the zoo. I say: Mira, el león. Look, the lion. Luna: Mira, el león. Oh, I see it. Lucas: And you can say: Me gusta el león. Luna: Me gusta el león. It's so majestic. Lucas: Totally. Now let's do a quick review. I'll say the animal in English, you say it in Spanish. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. Lucas: Lion. Luna: El león. Lucas: Elephant. Luna: El elefante. Lucas: Monkey. Luna: El mono. Lucas: Penguin. Luna: El pingüino. Lucas: Giraffe. Luna: La jirafa. Nailed it.
