- 2:31Speaker 1: Scene 3. Ben Gunn's Cave. The story of Treasure Island
- 2:37Speaker 1: is so well known that only a brief résumé need
- 2:41Speaker 1: be indulged in here to freshen everybody's memory, and how
- 2:45Speaker 1: can this be done half so well as in the
- 2:47Speaker 1: words of the immortal little hero Jim Hawkins? Quote, Squire Trelawney, Dr. Livesy,
- 2:54Speaker 1: and the rest of these gentlemen having asked me to
- 2:57Speaker 1: write down the whole particulars about Treasure Island, from the
- 3:00Speaker 1: beginning to the end, keeping nothing back but the bearings
- 3:04Speaker 1: of the island, and that only because there is still
- 3:07Speaker 1: treasure not yet lifted, I take up my pen in
- 3:10Speaker 1: the year of grace, seventeen blank, and go back to
- 3:14Speaker 1: the time when my father kept the Admiral Benbow in,
- 3:18Speaker 1: and the brown old seaman, with the sabre cut, first
- 3:21Speaker 1: took up his lodging under our roof. I remember him
- 3:25Speaker 1: as if it were yesterday, as he came plodding to
- 3:28Speaker 1: the inn door, his sea-chest following behind him in a hand-barrel,
- 3:33Speaker 1: a tall, strong, heavy, nut-brown man, his terry pigtail falling
- 3:38Speaker 1: over the shoulders of his soiled blue coat, his hands
- 3:42Speaker 1: ragged and scarred with black, broken nails, and the sabre-cut
- 3:46Speaker 1: across one cheek, a dirty, livid white, I remember him
- 3:51Speaker 1: looking round the cove and whistling to himself as he
- 3:54Speaker 1: did so, and then breaking out in that old sea-song
- 3:57Speaker 1: that he sang so often afterwards. Fifteen men on the
- 4:03Speaker 1: dead man's chest, Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum. ACT
- 4:10Speaker 1: I SCENE INTERIOR OF ADMIRAL BENBO INN Before the curtain
- 4:16Speaker 1: goes up, there is heard singing in loud boisterous voices.
- 4:20Speaker 1: When the curtain rises, the captain is seen seated at
- 4:24Speaker 1: the head of the table, with five or six men
- 4:26Speaker 1: about the table— stools for table, not chairs— all drinking and the
- 4:32Speaker 1: captain browbeating them. CAPTAIN. SEATED TABLE RIGHT. SINGING WITH VILLAGERS
- 4:38Speaker 1: BEFORE CURTAIN GOES UP.
- 4:40Speaker 11: FIFTEEN DEAD MEN ON A DEAD MAN'S CHEST. YO-HO-HO AND
- 4:45Speaker 11: A BOTTLE OF RUM.
- 4:47Speaker 13: CURTAIN.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Crossed ahead of table, center, sits.
- 4:51Speaker 11: Wait, wait, I say. We'll sing that over and louder.
- 4:56Speaker 11: Every one of you sing.
- 4:57Speaker 9: Sing now.
- 4:59Speaker 1: They sing.
- 5:00Speaker 11: Fifteen dead men on a dead man's chest. Yo-ho-ho and
- 5:05Speaker 11: a bottle of rum. Drink and the devil had done
- 5:08Speaker 11: for the rest. Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Hits on table with his tankard.
- 5:15Speaker 11: That's enough. Silence, I say.
- 5:19Speaker 1: As the man gets up.
- 5:20Speaker 11: Where are you going?
- 5:21Speaker 5: I'm going home, sir.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Captain thunders at him.
- 5:26Speaker 11: Sit down, sit down by thunder you'll do as I say.
- 5:31Speaker 1: The man fearfully sits down. The captain draws his cutlass
- 5:35Speaker 1: and places it on the table in front of him.
- 5:38Speaker 11: Not one of you leaves, do you hear?
- 5:40Speaker 2: Yes, yes.
- 5:43Speaker 11: It's a foggy evening and I'll have company, company.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Hits on the table with the end of his cutlass.
- 5:52Speaker 4: Mrs.
- 5:52Speaker 11: Hawkins, Mrs. Hawkins, I say.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Mrs. Hawkins rushes in from the tap room left center.
- 5:59Speaker 6: Yes, yes, Captain.
- 6:01Speaker 11: Why don't you come when you hear me? More drinks, Mrs. Hawkins.
- 6:06Speaker 6: Oh, please, please, sir.
- 6:09Speaker 5: What?
- 6:10Speaker 11: Did you hear what I said? Did you?
- 6:13Speaker 1: Very well, sir. I'll get it. Goes out to taproom,
- 6:16Speaker 1: left center.
- 6:18Speaker 11: You two there, what were you whispering about? I saw you.
- 6:22Speaker 11: I'll have no whisperings, you hear. Well, why don't you speak?
- 6:27Speaker 5: If you please, sir.
- 6:29Speaker 9: Who told you to speak?
- 6:31Speaker 1: Hits on the table with end of cutlass.
- 6:34Speaker 11: Mrs. Hawkins, Mrs. Hawkins, I'll have the rum. Rum, rum,
- 6:39Speaker 11: do you hear?
- 6:40Speaker 5: Let me go get it for you, sir.
- 6:43Speaker 11: Sit down.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Another man getting up.
- 6:46Speaker 4: It's late and we must go.
- 6:49Speaker 11: Sit down, I say.
- 6:51Speaker 1: The men sit down.
- 6:53Speaker 11: Not a man leaves. I'll not be left alone with
- 6:56Speaker 11: those faces out there in the fog.
- 7:00Speaker 5: But there are no faces.
- 7:02Speaker 11: Who asked you to speak? By thunder, I've seen men
- 7:07Speaker 11: run through for less. Rum, rum, rum!
- 7:12Speaker 1: Mrs. Hawkins coming in with tankards of drinks right of table.
- 7:16Speaker 9: Coming, coming, sir.
- 7:19Speaker 1: The men getting up.
- 7:20Speaker 5: But indeed, we've had enough.
- 7:23Speaker 11: What's that?
- 7:25Speaker 1: Getting up.
- 7:26Speaker 13: And we must go home, sir.
- 7:28Speaker 15: What?
- 7:30Speaker 1: Enter Dr. Livesy, Mrs. Hawkins pleadingly.
- 7:34Speaker 6: Oh, please, sir. You're driving all my business away.
- 7:38Speaker 11: Driving it away? I'm holding it here, madam. Sit down.
- 7:43Speaker 1: As the men still stand and edge toward the door.
- 7:46Speaker 4: What?
- 7:47Speaker 11: You refuse? You refuse to sit down and drink with me?
- 7:51Speaker 11: Then by thunder we'll see.
- 7:55Speaker 1: With a cry, the men rush out right center. The
- 7:58Speaker 1: captain rushes up to go after them and comes face
- 8:01Speaker 1: to face with Dr. Livesy, who enters.
- 8:04Speaker 5: Hello.
- 8:05Speaker 7: What's on this?
- 8:06Speaker 11: Silence between decks.
- 8:09Speaker 7: Are you addressing me, sir?
- 8:11Speaker 11: Aye, that I am.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Pounding on the table with the end of his cutlass.
- 8:16Speaker 11: Silence, I said.
- 8:18Speaker 9: Silence or stop that.
- 8:21Speaker 11: What's that?
- 8:23Speaker 1: Mrs. Hawkins comes down right, terribly afraid.
- 8:27Speaker 6: Oh, please, sir, please.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Captain coming up angrily toward Dr. Livesy.
- 8:33Speaker 11: Now say that again.
- 8:35Speaker 7: I sent for you to stop it, and I mean it.
- 8:38Speaker 1: The captain, holding his cutlass in his hand.
- 8:41Speaker 11: Why, you rum-punching, weak-livered swab, you bandy-leg lubber, I'll show you.
- 8:50Speaker 7: Put down that cutlass.
- 8:52Speaker 2: What, you?
- 8:54Speaker 1: Dr. Livesy, staring captain down.
- 8:58Speaker 7: Put it down, or upon my honour you shall hang
- 9:00Speaker 7: in next to sizes. Put it down.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Doctor points. The captain gives way.
- 9:06Speaker 7: And now you listen to me. I warned you against
- 9:09Speaker 7: drinking before. You had a stroke, and much against my will,
- 9:13Speaker 7: I dragged you headforemost out of the grave. And now, Mr.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Bones—''.
- 9:17Speaker 11: That' s not my name.'' Well, it.
- 9:20Speaker 7: Will serve all right. And I tell you this. One
- 9:24Speaker 7: glass of rum won't kill you, but if you take one,
- 9:27Speaker 7: you'll take another, and I'll stake my wig. If you
- 9:29Speaker 7: don't break off short, you'll die. You understand?' Die and
- 9:33Speaker 7: go your own place like the man in the Bible.
- 9:36Speaker 11: Well, that's my business.
- 9:39Speaker 7: Yes, and this is mine. I am a magistrate as
- 9:41Speaker 7: well as a doctor, and if I find the least
- 9:44Speaker 7: complaint about you hereafter, I'll take means to have you
- 9:47Speaker 7: routed out of this. Now then, away with you.
- 9:51Speaker 11: This is a free inn.
- 9:53Speaker 7: You heard what I said.
- 9:55Speaker 5: Go.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Captain, on stairs.
- 9:59Speaker 11: Your pleasure.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Pay for this you'll see he starts upstairs.
- 10:05Speaker 7: That's all right and remember the very name of rum
- 10:07Speaker 7: is death for.
- 10:08Speaker 1: You captain goes out door upstairs mrs hawkins very afraid.
- 10:17Speaker 6: Oh sir i'm so glad you came He's got all
- 10:20Speaker 6: the people round here so afraid they'll hardly come to
- 10:24Speaker 6: the inn any more. We're all in mortal terror of
- 10:27Speaker 6: the man, sir.
- 10:29Speaker 7: In spite of my warning that it would kill him,
- 10:31Speaker 7: he's been drinking, eh?
- 10:33Speaker 9: Mrs.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Hawkins sits.
- 10:36Speaker 4: Oh, yes, sir.
- 10:38Speaker 6: Drinking and singing that horrid song. And blowing his nose
- 10:42Speaker 6: so loud, sir. It sounds like the report of a cannon.
- 10:46Speaker 11: As Dr.
- 10:47Speaker 6: Livesy smiles— You may laugh, but I never knew a
- 10:51Speaker 6: man to put such fierceness into the blowing of his nose.
- 10:55Speaker 6: And when I asks him for money, sir, why, why,
- 11:00Speaker 6: that's when he blows his nose the loudest.
- 11:03Speaker 7: I dare swear he owes you for his lodgings.
- 11:06Speaker 6: That he does, sir. Oh, I appeal to you as magistrate.
- 11:12Speaker 6: He's ruining me, sir, ruining me.
- 11:15Speaker 8: Mrs.
- 11:15Speaker 7: Hawkins, Squire Trelawney and I have been watching your lodger
- 11:19Speaker 7: for some time.
- 11:20Speaker 6: He's given Jim a silver penny every month to keep
- 11:24Speaker 6: his eye open for a seafaring man with one leg.
- 11:29Speaker 7: Ah, I see now.
- 11:31Speaker 6: And that's the worst of it. The influence he has
- 11:34Speaker 6: over my boy.
- 11:36Speaker 7: Jim's a good boy. I'll be bound.
- 11:38Speaker 6: That he is, sir. Jim's the best boy in the world.
- 11:43Speaker 6: The captain is filling his head with stories. You should
- 11:47Speaker 6: have heard the stories as he told about that boat.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Indicates picture over mantle.
- 11:53Speaker 16: Dr.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Livesy looks at picture and reads title.
- 11:57Speaker 7: Flint's treasure ship.
- 11:59Speaker 6: He's got the boy so worked up with his horrid
- 12:02Speaker 6: tales of pirates and sea fights and treasure hunting that
- 12:06Speaker 6: the lad is fair bewitched with the idea of going
- 12:09Speaker 6: to sea and, oh, sir, rise. He's all I have.
- 12:15Speaker 6: I want my money, but I don't want my boy
- 12:17Speaker 6: in his company.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Puts chair back to table.
- 12:22Speaker 7: I think I can promise you both, Mrs.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Hawkins.
- 12:25Speaker 7: Squire Trelawney is to meet me here tonight.
- 12:28Speaker 6: Oh, sir, I hope there isn't going to be any fighting.
- 12:31Speaker 7: Can you keep a secret, Mrs. Hawkins?
- 12:34Speaker 6: As close as the grave, sir.
- 12:37Speaker 7: You can, eh? Come here to the window.
- 12:40Speaker 1: As she starts to the window— No, it's so.
- 12:43Speaker 7: Foggy you can't see. But there's a little lugger down
- 12:45Speaker 7: at Kitch Hole. I suspect that's the boat our friend
- 12:48Speaker 7: is looking for.
- 12:50Speaker 5: What?
- 12:51Speaker 6: What is it?
- 12:52Speaker 5: Smuggler. Oh.
- 12:55Speaker 7: That's what your captain is. That's why he's waiting for
- 12:57Speaker 7: one special seaman. And that, Mrs. Hawkins, is what the
- 13:01Speaker 7: squire and I have been waiting for. I've got men
- 13:04Speaker 7: all over the countryside. Now, if we can keep an
- 13:07Speaker 7: eye on the captain.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Enter Jim from Tap Room.
- 13:11Speaker 7: We'll get the whole crew of them. Oh, I say,
- 13:14Speaker 7: you say Jim is close to the captain?
- 13:17Speaker 6: Hand and glove, more's the pity.
- 13:20Speaker 4: Jim! Yes, sir?
- 13:22Speaker 6: That horrid man has had enough for today. The doctor
- 13:25Speaker 6: wants to talk to you.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Exits.
- 13:29Speaker 7: Sit down.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Jim comes over and sits at the table.
- 13:34Speaker 4: Thank you, sir.
- 13:35Speaker 7: Jim, since your father died, your mother has had only
- 13:38Speaker 7: you to help her.
- 13:40Speaker 4: I do my best, sir.
- 13:41Speaker 7: I know you do quite right, my boy. Jim, your
- 13:44Speaker 7: mother tells me the captain hasn't paid for his board
- 13:46Speaker 7: and lodging.
- 13:48Speaker 4: He hasn't. Not since the first day, sir. He was
- 13:51Speaker 4: at that door calling for a glass of rum. This
- 13:54Speaker 4: is a handy little cove, says he.
- 13:56Speaker 3: Much company.
- 13:58Speaker 7: Oh, he asked that, did he?
- 14:00Speaker 4: And when he heard as how there was very little,
- 14:02Speaker 4: he says, this is the berth for me. So when
- 14:04Speaker 4: he comes with his Z-chest and throws down three pieces
- 14:07Speaker 4: of gold, you can tell me when I've worked through that.
- 14:10Speaker 11: Says he.
- 14:11Speaker 7: Well, he has worked through it, hasn't he?
- 14:14Speaker 4: Oh, yes, sir, and much beside.
- 14:16Speaker 7: Jim, if your mother is to get what's owing her,
- 14:19Speaker 7: you must watch his every move to-night. I shall be
- 14:22Speaker 7: there in the village, the least thing that looks suspicious,
- 14:25Speaker 7: any strangers that call him, any attempt of the captain
- 14:28Speaker 7: to leave. You send me word, by your mother, no
- 14:31Speaker 7: matter what happens. Don't you leave him for one moment.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Jim, slightly afraid, but trying to hide it.
- 14:39Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 14:40Speaker 3: No, sir.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Jim sits right of table.
- 14:45Speaker 7: Jim, there's a nasty fog out here, a fog that
- 14:48Speaker 7: hides things on the sea. A fog like that is
- 14:50Speaker 7: bad for ships on good business, but it's good for
- 14:53Speaker 7: ships on bad business. These men are on bad business.
- 14:57Speaker 1: With sudden change of tone.
- 14:59Speaker 7: Hawkins, I am a magistrate.
- 15:02Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 15:03Speaker 7: Hawkins, I appoint you an officer of the Crown.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Jim, startled, arises. Dr. Livesey salutes him.
- 15:13Speaker 7: An officer of the Crown, Hawkins.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Jim awkwardly returns the salute.
- 15:20Speaker 15: Aye, aye, sir.
- 15:21Speaker 7: You're the only one who can watch without suspicion. You're
- 15:24Speaker 7: not afraid, Hawkins?
- 15:26Speaker 4: No, no, sir, I'm not afraid.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Dr. Livesey's hands on Jim's shoulders.
- 15:33Speaker 7: Then we'll unravel this mystery before midnight. Keep your eyes open, remember.
- 15:38Speaker 7: Officer of the Crown.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Exits Dr. Livesy, right center. Jim salutes. During the last
- 15:46Speaker 1: two preceding speeches, there is heard a song as if
- 15:49Speaker 1: the singer were approaching. Captain on stairs.
- 15:54Speaker 11: Jim, is he gone?
- 15:56Speaker 13: Who?
- 15:57Speaker 11: That swab of a doctor.
- 16:00Speaker 4: Yes.
- 16:01Speaker 11: Then go fetch me some rum, Jim.
- 16:04Speaker 9: But.
- 16:05Speaker 13: Rum.
- 16:06Speaker 11: A whole tankin' of it. Fetch it to my room.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Starts away.
- 16:10Speaker 4: But, Captain, the doctor said.
- 16:13Speaker 11: The doctor be blowed.
- 16:16Speaker 1: I— With sudden change of manner, he now becomes almost
- 16:19Speaker 1: whiningly kind.
- 16:21Speaker 11: Nay, come here, Jim. I'm not meaning to be hard
- 16:25Speaker 11: with you. You've been my friend, the only one I
- 16:28Speaker 11: can trust.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Confidentially.
- 16:31Speaker 11: And if ever I need someone, it's today. There's things
- 16:36Speaker 11: brewing today, Jim.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Looks fearfully over his shoulder at the window.
- 16:40Speaker 11: I can feel it in the air.
- 16:44Speaker 4: It's just fog, Captain.
- 16:45Speaker 11: Aye, the fog. It's full of faces, Jim. The fog.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Keeps looking around furtively at the window.
- 16:55Speaker 11: Every step of the way from the cove I've seen them. Faces, Jim.
- 17:00Speaker 11: Like those of Flint's crew up there. They've been all
- 17:04Speaker 11: around me.
- 17:04Speaker 1: They're Suddenly stares at the window.
- 17:08Speaker 11: See? See there at the window? Look!
- 17:11Speaker 1: Jim crosses to window center.
- 17:14Speaker 4: Why, there's nothing there.
- 17:16Speaker 11: Didn't you see a face, a face with an ugly
- 17:20Speaker 11: look on it?
- 17:21Speaker 1: Jim goes to the door right center and looks out.
- 17:25Speaker 4: There's not a person on the road.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Comes back into the room center.
- 17:30Speaker 11: Faces, faces everywhere in the fog.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Turns suddenly.
- 17:35Speaker 11: You've kept your eye open for a seafaring man with
- 17:38Speaker 11: one leg?
- 17:40Speaker 4: Yes, sir, though it's no pay I've had these several weeks.
- 17:44Speaker 9: What?
- 17:46Speaker 4: I said I'd had no pay and.
- 17:48Speaker 1: As Captain takes out his handkerchief to blow his nose.
- 17:52Speaker 4: That's all right, sir, you needn't mind.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Captain blows his nose.
- 17:57Speaker 11: No pay, hey?
- 17:58Speaker 9: Well, well?
- 18:01Speaker 1: Starts to roar and then changes his mind.
- 18:04Speaker 15: Well?
- 18:05Speaker 11: There's your pay, lad. Take it, take it. I'm needing
- 18:07Speaker 11: friends today.
- 18:09Speaker 1: As Jim takes the money.
- 18:11Speaker 11: There's a little lugger down at Kit's Hole. Keep your
- 18:14Speaker 11: eyes open. Watch the road and... Jim, anyone asks for me,
- 18:20Speaker 11: you don't know me. You never heard of me. Understand?
- 18:23Speaker 4: Not even the seafaring man with one leg?
- 18:27Speaker 13: No, none of them.
- 18:29Speaker 11: Bring my rum upstairs now and keep your eyes open.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Turns and glances at the window.
- 18:36Speaker 9: There, there he is again.
- 18:37Speaker 11: See him looking in that window?
- 18:39Speaker 4: I tell you there's no one. Nothing.
- 18:42Speaker 13: Nothing, eh?
- 18:44Speaker 11: It's the whole crew of them in the fog there,
- 18:46Speaker 11: the whole crew of them, and it's going to be
- 18:48Speaker 11: a fight. But we'll beat him yet. Get me that rum, quick.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Goes upstairs. Jim goes timidly to the window and looks out.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Then he draws back. Finally he gets up his courage
- 19:02Speaker 1: and goes to the door, looks out timidly, then grows bolder,
- 19:06Speaker 1: goes outside, looks up and down, and finally comes in
- 19:10Speaker 1: and closes the door. He exits to the taproom. For
- 19:14Speaker 1: a moment the stage is empty. Upstairs the captain can
- 19:18Speaker 1: be heard singing his song. Finally a face is seen
- 19:22Speaker 1: peering at the window. Then the face disappears, and soon
- 19:26Speaker 1: the door opens and a man enters. a pale tallowy
- 19:30Speaker 1: creature wanting two fingers of the left hand and though
- 19:34Speaker 1: he wore a cutlass he did not look much a
- 19:37Speaker 1: fighter he is black dog for a moment he stands
- 19:41Speaker 1: listening to the singing and nodding sardonically he is making
- 19:45Speaker 1: for the entrance upstairs when jim returns with a tankard
- 19:49Speaker 1: of rum Black Dog wheels quickly at left. Jim, surprised
- 19:54Speaker 1: and startled, left center.
- 19:58Speaker 4: I didn't hear you come in.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Black Dog left at stairs.
- 20:02Speaker 5: Hmm.
- 20:04Speaker 12: Tidy little place. Very tidy. Come here, Sonny. Come nearer here.
- 20:12Speaker 12: And what have you there?
- 20:14Speaker 1: Goes up to Jim, who tries to draw back.
- 20:17Speaker 14: Some rum, sir.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Black Dog sniffs it.
- 20:20Speaker 11: Hmm.
- 20:22Speaker 12: Rum it is. Good, strong rum.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Jim, fearing he is to take it.
- 20:29Speaker 4: It's for the gentleman upstairs, sir.
- 20:31Speaker 12: For the gentleman upstairs. Good, strong rum for the gentleman upstairs.
- 20:39Speaker 12: You know what I think?
- 20:42Speaker 4: No, sir.
- 20:44Speaker 12: I think it is just the sort of stuff that'd
- 20:46Speaker 12: suit my old mate, Bill. Now, what do you think?
- 20:52Speaker 4: I don't know your mate, Bill, and so.
- 20:55Speaker 12: Don't you now? That's too bad. What might you call
- 21:00Speaker 12: your gentleman upstairs?
- 21:03Speaker 15: Captain.
- 21:04Speaker 12: Well, my mate Bill might be called Captain.
- 21:08Speaker 7: Jim.
- 21:09Speaker 5: Jim.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Starting to go.
- 21:11Speaker 4: I'm sure he isn't the same.
- 21:13Speaker 12: We'll put it for argument. Your captain has a cut
- 21:16Speaker 12: on one cheek, and that the right one.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Jim starts.
- 21:22Speaker 12: Ah, well, I told you. Now, is my mate, Bill, here?
- 21:30Speaker 1: Jim, up two steps.
- 21:32Speaker 4: I'll go upstairs and let him know.
- 21:34Speaker 11: No, you won't.
- 21:36Speaker 1: As Jim still starts to go, he thunders at him.
- 21:39Speaker 12: Stop, I say, or stop.
- 21:42Speaker 4: But, sir, I must tell the captain.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Black Dog then fawning again as Jim stops.
- 21:49Speaker 5: There, there, lad.
- 21:51Speaker 12: I'm meaning you no harm. Why, I have a son
- 21:55Speaker 12: of my own as like you as two blocks, and
- 21:58Speaker 12: he's all the pride of my art. But the great
- 22:02Speaker 12: thing for boys is discipline, sonny. But you see, I
- 22:07Speaker 12: planned this as a great surprise to Bill. Bless his heart.
- 22:11Speaker 12: And I couldn't have you spoil it.
- 22:14Speaker 1: He takes out his cutlass and tries it.
- 22:17Speaker 4: Oh, sir, I hope there's not going to be any trouble.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Captain upstairs.
- 22:22Speaker 8: Jim!
- 22:23Speaker 4: Jim!
- 22:23Speaker 9: Where's my rum?
- 22:25Speaker 1: Black Dog motions Jim to keep silent.
- 22:29Speaker 8: Shh!
- 22:29Speaker 5: Shh!
- 22:31Speaker 12: Bill and me's old friends. He'll be glad to see me.
- 22:35Speaker 11: Bill will.
- 22:36Speaker 12: Bless his art.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Still upstairs.
- 22:40Speaker 6: Jim!
- 22:41Speaker 4: Jim!
- 22:43Speaker 5: Shh.
- 22:45Speaker 12: Not a word, or I'll wring your neck.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Grasps Jim by the throat and urges him back of
- 22:52Speaker 1: the stairs left.
- 22:54Speaker 4: What are you doing, sir?
- 22:56Speaker 12: Giving Bill a surprise. A little surprise.
- 23:00Speaker 1: The captain comes down the stairs. Furious.
- 23:04Speaker 15: Jim!
- 23:05Speaker 6: Jim!
- 23:05Speaker 11: Where has he gone, Jim, I say?
- 23:08Speaker 1: Goes to center head of table.
- 23:10Speaker 4: Jim!
- 23:12Speaker 1: Black Dog speaks when Captain gets above table, steps out
- 23:16Speaker 1: with cutlass drawn as Captain turns.
- 23:19Speaker 12: Hello, Bill.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Captain stops short as if stunned.
- 23:25Speaker 5: You!
- 23:26Speaker 11: You! Come, Bill.
- 23:28Speaker 12: You know your old shipmate.
- 23:31Speaker 11: Black Dog, what do you want?
- 23:34Speaker 1: Moves toward him.
- 23:35Speaker 12: Just come to see my old shipmate, Billy, and talk
- 23:40Speaker 12: over old times.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Captain, bitterly.
- 23:43Speaker 11: Old times, huh.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Moves toward Black Dog. Black Dog circles to right of table.
- 23:51Speaker 12: A sight of times we've seen, Bill. Us two. Since
- 23:55Speaker 12: I lost them talons.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Holds up mutilated hand.
- 24:00Speaker 11: Now look here. You run me down. Here I am.
- 24:04Speaker 11: Well then. Speak up. What is it?
- 24:07Speaker 12: That's you, Bill. Always to the point.
- 24:11Speaker 1: Significantly to Jim.
- 24:13Speaker 12: I'll just have a glass of rum.
- 24:16Speaker 4: Here, sir.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Makes as if to offer the tankard. Black dog sinister.
- 24:22Speaker 12: That's for the gentleman upstairs. I'll have my own.
- 24:28Speaker 1: As Jim hurries toward taproom.
- 24:30Speaker 12: Don't hurry back.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Jim takes hold of the taproom door to close it.
- 24:36Speaker 12: Leave that open. None of your keyholes for me, Sonny.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Jim goes out at taproom door. Captain, fiercely.
- 24:46Speaker 11: Well, out with it.
- 24:48Speaker 12: Now we'll talk square like old shipmates.
- 24:52Speaker 11: Old shipmates, huh?
- 24:53Speaker 12: Sure, Bill. We're all here. Morgan and Hans and Pew
- 25:01Speaker 12: and O'Brien.
- 25:02Speaker 4: Silver?
- 25:04Speaker 11: Aye, silver.
- 25:06Speaker 12: He's in command down there on the little lugger.
- 25:09Speaker 11: A nice little lugger it must be.
- 25:12Speaker 12: We all sailed with Flint, and what we got like
- 25:15Speaker 12: gentlemen of fortune belonged to.
- 25:18Speaker 11: Flint.
- 25:19Speaker 12: Aye, to Flint. And Flint to Flint's crew. And that's
- 25:26Speaker 12: what we've come for. What we're going to get.
- 25:30Speaker 11: Go on, out with it all.
- 25:32Speaker 12: There's money about you, Bill Bones.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Sits right of table.
- 25:38Speaker 12: Money as belongs to us all. And more than money,
- 25:43Speaker 12: there's a little chart. Flint's fist. Showing where all Flint's
- 25:49Speaker 12: treasure is hid. Them things belong to us all. And
- 25:54Speaker 12: by thunder, them things we're going to have. Now you know, Bill.
- 26:01Speaker 11: And that's the message they sent by you?
- 26:05Speaker 5: Aye.
- 26:06Speaker 11: Then you can go back and tell them I'm still captain,
- 26:10Speaker 11: and what I say is law. Why, you mess of swabs,
- 26:14Speaker 11: you think you can give your orders to me, you?
- 26:18Speaker 12: It's more than that we'd be giving you. The little
- 26:22Speaker 12: black spot.
- 26:24Speaker 11: Oh, you will, huh? you'll tip me off the black
- 26:27Speaker 11: spot well let's see the one of you that dares
- 26:31Speaker 11: send him along or maybe you've got it have you have.
- 26:34Speaker 1: You raises his cutlass and rushes at black dog who avoids.
- 26:39Speaker 17: Him now hand it over hand it over i haven't
- 26:44Speaker 17: it but here it'll be all right and you'll surrender
- 26:49Speaker 17: things as don't belong to you or you'll.
- 26:52Speaker 11: Swing I'll swing, then we'll all swing, and you can
- 26:56Speaker 11: tell that to Silver, to Pew, to Hands, to O'Brien,
- 27:00Speaker 11: to all of them. Bill Bones is still in command.
- 27:04Speaker 12: And that's the answer I'm to take back.
- 27:07Speaker 11: Yes, that's the answer.
- 27:09Speaker 9: And that, that, that.
- 27:12Speaker 1: As he speaks, he strikes with his cutlass. Black Dog
- 27:16Speaker 1: tries to parry and fight, but he is quickly disarmed
- 27:19Speaker 1: and flees, and the captain hurls his cutlass at him
- 27:22Speaker 1: as he runs out the door. The captain, very much
- 27:25Speaker 1: shaken himself, follows to the door to pick up his cutlass,
- 27:30Speaker 1: and calls after Black Dog.
- 27:31Speaker 11: Tell that to— tell him where the bill-bones has lost his arm!
- 27:37Speaker 1: As he picks up his cutlass.
- 27:38Speaker 11: Tell that to the one who's to bring the black spot, and.
- 27:43Speaker 1: As he comes back into the room, he suddenly totters
- 27:46Speaker 1: and falls upon a stool.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Jim!
- 27:49Speaker 3: Jim!
- 27:51Speaker 1: The captain seems about to swoon.
- 27:54Speaker 10: What is it, Captain?
- 27:55Speaker 1: With rum for Black Dog.
- 27:58Speaker 2: Rum!
- 27:59Speaker 8: Rum! Quick!
- 28:00Speaker 1: Jim, rum on table, center.
- 28:03Speaker 4: The doctor warned you.
- 28:05Speaker 11: Look, Jim, how my fingers fidget. I can't keep him still,
- 28:09Speaker 11: not I. If I don't have a drain of rum,
- 28:12Speaker 11: I'll have the horrors. I seen some on him already.
- 28:16Speaker 11: I seen old Flint in the corner there behind you
- 28:19Speaker 11: as plain as print.
- 28:20Speaker 9: I seen him.
- 28:21Speaker 11: And if I get the horrors, I'm a man that
- 28:23Speaker 11: has lived rough. And I'll raise cane. The doctor himself
- 28:27Speaker 11: said one glass wouldn't hurt me. And I have hardly
- 28:29Speaker 11: had a drop today. I'll give you a golden guinea
- 28:32Speaker 11: for a noggin, Jim.
- 28:34Speaker 4: You shouldn't touch the stuff, sir.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Handing him the tankard.
- 28:39Speaker 15: There.
- 28:40Speaker 1: As Captain drinks.
- 28:42Speaker 4: Oh, sir, I'd better call someone. I fear it's another stroke.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Captain, holding on to Jim.
- 28:48Speaker 11: Don't you leave me. Don't leave me, Jim, not now.
- 28:51Speaker 11: I need you.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Drinks.
- 28:53Speaker 11: You're the only one worth anything, and with your help, Jim,
- 28:56Speaker 11: I'm going to beat him yet. I will, Jim, I will.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Drinks, and seems to recover as he does so.
- 29:04Speaker 4: You shouldn't touch that stuff, sir.
- 29:06Speaker 5: Nay.
- 29:07Speaker 4: The doctor said it was sure death.
- 29:09Speaker 11: Oh, what's he know about it? Doctors is all swabs,
- 29:13Speaker 11: and that doctor there, why, what do he know about
- 29:16Speaker 11: seafaring men? Rise. I've been in places as hot as
- 29:21Speaker 11: pitch and mates, dropping round with the yellow jack and
- 29:25Speaker 11: the blessed lander, heaving like the sea with earthquakes.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Drops glass.
- 29:30Speaker 11: What do doctors know of lands like that? And I
- 29:34Speaker 11: lived on rum, I tell you. It's been meat and
- 29:37Speaker 11: drink and man and wife to me, and if I
- 29:39Speaker 11: don't get... me rum i'm a battered old hulk on
- 29:42Speaker 11: the lee shore my blood'll be on your head jim
- 29:46Speaker 11: and on that doctor's swab you will give me one
- 29:50Speaker 11: more noggin won't.
- 29:51Speaker 1: You seems to grow fainter jim giving it to him
- 29:56Speaker 1: from shelf up center you're killing yourself Captain, recovering.
- 30:03Speaker 11: Now, listen, Jim. That man just here, he's a bad'un.
- 30:07Speaker 11: But there's worse put him on. And they're out there
- 30:10Speaker 11: on that ship in the fog, waiting. They're trying to
- 30:14Speaker 11: get me, to tip me the black spot.
- 30:17Speaker 4: The what?
- 30:18Speaker 11: The black spot. That's about the worst disgrace can come
- 30:22Speaker 11: to a pirate captain. It means he must step down.
- 30:25Speaker 11: That he's gone. Done for. That he's got to do
- 30:28Speaker 11: what his men say instead of them doing what he says.
- 30:31Speaker 11: Sometimes it means worse than that too. That's what I'm
- 30:34Speaker 11: fearing from that crowd out there. Take a look at
- 30:37Speaker 11: the door.
- 30:39Speaker 1: Jim looks out of door.
- 30:41Speaker 4: No one, sir.
- 30:43Speaker 11: Close the door. Come here.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Confidentially, as Jim comes up, It's up there.
- 30:48Speaker 11: In my old sea chest, what they're after. But I'm
- 30:52Speaker 11: going to try to get away first, and if I do,
- 30:55Speaker 11: I'll promise you I'll come back for you someday, and
- 30:58Speaker 11: we'll go to sea, as I told you, in a
- 31:01Speaker 11: schooner with a piping bosun and pigtailed singing seaman, to
- 31:05Speaker 11: see Jim bound for an unknown island to seek buried treasure.
- 31:09Speaker 11: You'd like that?
- 31:11Speaker 3: Oh, yes.
- 31:13Speaker 11: Well, I'll promise you, But if they tip me the
- 31:16Speaker 11: black spot first, you get word to that doctor magistrate.
- 31:19Speaker 11: Tell him to pipe all hands and he'll lay them
- 31:21Speaker 11: aboard here at the Benbow Inn. All of Flint's crew,
- 31:24Speaker 11: all of them that's left.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Jim, frightened.
- 31:28Speaker 4: Not Flint the buccaneer.
- 31:30Speaker 11: Flint's crew, I was the first mate. Aboard that ship there.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Points to print over mantle.
- 31:37Speaker 11: Old Flint's first mate. And I'm the only one as
- 31:41Speaker 11: knows the place.
- 31:43Speaker 4: What place?
- 31:44Speaker 11: The place where Flint hid all his money. The chart's
- 31:47Speaker 11: up there in my chest. Flint gave it to me
- 31:50Speaker 11: in Savannah as he lay dying. But you won't peach, lad,
- 31:53Speaker 11: lest they get the black spot on me. Will you, Jim?
- 31:56Speaker 4: No, no, Captain.
- 31:58Speaker 11: Oh, lest you see a seafaring man with one leg,
- 32:01Speaker 11: him above all others. You'll keep your weathery eye open, lad.
- 32:06Speaker 1: Gets up, but he is very weak.
- 32:09Speaker 11: And if I get away, I'll pay you well. If
- 32:12Speaker 11: I don't, You go to that chest and he takes
- 32:14Speaker 11: out the money I owes your mother and a little
- 32:17Speaker 11: package in oilcloth. Take that to the doctor. He'll tell
- 32:21Speaker 11: you what to do.
- 32:22Speaker 1: Jim goes to help the captain who tutters toward the stairs.
- 32:27Speaker 4: Let me help you.
- 32:28Speaker 11: No, Bill Bones can stand alone yet. And with your help, Sonny,
- 32:34Speaker 11: we'll beat him. You'll see. We'll beat him yet.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Jim, upstairs. Mother, mother.
- 32:42Speaker 5: What is it?
- 32:43Speaker 4: Those men down there at the cove.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Yes?
- 32:47Speaker 4: They're pirates.
- 32:48Speaker 5: What?
- 32:49Speaker 4: Flint's crew. They've come for the captain up there.
- 32:52Speaker 11: Whistle.
- 32:54Speaker 4: Hear that?
- 32:55Speaker 11: What is it?
- 32:56Speaker 4: It's a signal.
- 32:58Speaker 1: Whistle.
- 32:59Speaker 4: There's the answer.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Noise.
- 33:01Speaker 4: He's heard it up there.
- 33:02Speaker 11: Mrs.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Hawkins crosses to left of stairs.
- 33:06Speaker 4: Oh, dear.
- 33:07Speaker 6: What shall we do? They'll be all about our ears.
- 33:10Speaker 6: What shall we do?
- 33:12Speaker 4: We must send word to the doctor. Yes, yes.
- 33:15Speaker 15: Come quick.
- 33:16Speaker 4: No, I've got to stay. My orders were to watch. But... Dr.
- 33:20Speaker 4: Livesey made me an officer of the Crown, and I
- 33:23Speaker 4: must stay. So you must go, Mother.
- 33:25Speaker 6: And leave you alone, Jim?
- 33:27Speaker 9: No, no, no.
- 33:29Speaker 4: The doctor's relying on us, Mother.
- 33:31Speaker 6: But the fog's so thick.
- 33:33Speaker 4: Just to the village. And be sure to tell the
- 33:35Speaker 4: doctor they're not smugglers. They're pirates. Flint's crew.
- 33:38Speaker 5: Quick.
- 33:39Speaker 1: Mrs. Hawkins kissing him.
- 33:41Speaker 6: Oh jim jim you close the door you close it
- 33:45Speaker 6: tight there.
- 33:46Speaker 4: There mother quick there's no time to lose remember.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Exits left intermediate he holds the door open and calls
- 33:54Speaker 1: softly mother mother when he gets no answer he closes
- 33:59Speaker 1: the door and comes back into the room then suddenly
- 34:02Speaker 1: he gives a start for there is heard the tapping
- 34:05Speaker 1: of a person with a cane the tapping comes closer
- 34:09Speaker 1: and closer and finally stops outside the door.
- 34:12Speaker 4: What's that?
- 34:13Speaker 1: There is a slight pause. Jim trembles. There is a
- 34:17Speaker 1: knock at the door. With a gulp, Jim stumbles back.
- 34:21Speaker 1: A second knock, and Jim masters his fear and approaches
- 34:25Speaker 1: timidly the door. He opens it. There stands a man,
- 34:30Speaker 1: plainly blind, a great green shade over his eyes and nose.
- 34:34Speaker 1: He was hunched as if with age and weakness. He
- 34:37Speaker 1: wore a tattered old sea-cloak with hood, and that made
- 34:41Speaker 1: him appear positively deformed. His voice was an odd sing-song.
- 34:46Speaker 1: He is Pew.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Will any kind friend inform a poor blind man where
- 34:53Speaker 2: or in what part of the country he is?
- 34:56Speaker 4: You're at the Admiral Benbow Inn, Black Hill Cove.
- 35:00Speaker 2: I hear a young voice. Will you lead me in,
- 35:03Speaker 2: my kind young friend?
- 35:06Speaker 1: Jim Takes Pew by hand.
- 35:09Speaker 4: There, sir. Easy now. Gently and.
- 35:11Speaker 5: Oh!
- 35:12Speaker 1: He winces with pain as Pew's manner suddenly changes and
- 35:16Speaker 1: he finds his arm gripped tight.
- 35:18Speaker 4: You're hurting my arm, sir. Not so tight.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Pew, hard and menacing.
- 35:23Speaker 2: Take me to the captain.
- 35:25Speaker 1: Jim, trying to get away.
- 35:28Speaker 5: Oh, please, sir.
- 35:29Speaker 4: Please, sir.
- 35:30Speaker 2: Take me or I'll break your arm.
- 35:33Speaker 4: The captain is ill, sir. Very ill.
- 35:35Speaker 2: Lead me straight to him. and say, here's a friend
- 35:39Speaker 2: for you, Bill. If you don't this instant, I'll.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Jim, as Pew has suddenly stopped to urge him, and
- 35:47Speaker 1: now stands listening.
- 35:49Speaker 4: Please let me go, sir, please.
- 35:52Speaker 2: I hear someone on the stairs. Unless Pew is here
- 35:56Speaker 2: to trick him, it's a friend, the captain. Is it? Answer.
- 36:01Speaker 1: Squeezes Jim's arm.
- 36:03Speaker 5: Is it?
- 36:04Speaker 7: It is, sir.
- 36:05Speaker 2: And remember what I said, and I'm holding on to
- 36:08Speaker 2: your arm.
- 36:09Speaker 1: He tightens his grip upon Jim, who winces. The captain
- 36:13Speaker 1: comes tottering downstairs under the weight of his sea chest.
- 36:17Speaker 1: He seems very feeble.
- 36:19Speaker 11: Well bait him yet, well bait him yet, Jim.
- 36:23Speaker 1: Pew whispers to Jim and pinches.
- 36:27Speaker 2: Say it, now!
- 36:29Speaker 1: Jim winces under Pew's hold.
- 36:32Speaker 4: Here's a friend for you, Bill.
- 36:34Speaker 1: Captain turns and sees Pew. At sight of him, he
- 36:38Speaker 1: lets the chest fall with a crash and totteringly supports
- 36:42Speaker 1: himself against it, seeming quite dazed.
- 36:45Speaker 11: Pew!
- 36:46Speaker 1: Pew to Jim.
- 36:48Speaker 2: Lead me to him.
- 36:50Speaker 1: As Jim leads him up to the Captain.
- 36:52Speaker 2: Now, Bill, stay just where you are. Business is business.
- 36:59Speaker 2: Hold out your hand.
- 37:01Speaker 9: Boy!
- 37:02Speaker 2: Take his hand by the wrist, bring it close to mine.
- 37:07Speaker 1: Jim does as directed, and Pugh passes a paper into
- 37:10Speaker 1: the hands of the captain, who seems to crumple up
- 37:13Speaker 1: when he receives it.
- 37:15Speaker 2: Now, that's done. Lead me to the door, boy.
- 37:20Speaker 1: Jim leads him to the door.
- 37:22Speaker 2: Good day to you, Bill.
- 37:25Speaker 1: He goes out. Jim comes running back to the captain,
- 37:29Speaker 1: who stands staring at the paper in his hand. Jim,
- 37:33Speaker 1: as the captain stands swaying back and forth dizzily and
- 37:37Speaker 1: looking down at the paper in his hand.
- 37:39Speaker 13: What, what is it?
- 37:42Speaker 11: The black spot.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Turns over the paper and reads.
- 37:46Speaker 11: Till ten o'clock.
- 37:48Speaker 1: With increasing force, as if getting an idea.
- 37:51Speaker 11: They've got me, but they shan't have that chest. Flynn's fist,
- 37:56Speaker 11: Bill Bones is still in command. They shan't have it.
- 37:59Speaker 15: They shan't.
- 38:00Speaker 11: They shan't.
- 38:02Speaker 1: He stumbles up to the door, and then as he
- 38:04Speaker 1: gets there, with a hoarse cry he puts his arm
- 38:07Speaker 1: before his eyes and stumbles back into the room. He reels,
- 38:12Speaker 1: puts his hand to his throat, stands swaying a moment,
- 38:16Speaker 1: and then, with a peculiar sound, falls from his whole
- 38:19Speaker 1: height foremost to the floor, falls right upstairs. Jim bends
- 38:25Speaker 1: over the captain.
- 38:26Speaker 4: Captain!
- 38:27Speaker 9: Captain!
- 38:28Speaker 1: Feels his chest. With a frightened cry, he starts back
- 38:34Speaker 1: as Mrs. Hawkins enters, left too.
- 38:37Speaker 4: Mother!
- 38:38Speaker 1: Points to Captain. The Captain!
- 38:41Speaker 11: Dead!
- 38:42Speaker 6: Glory be!
- 38:43Speaker 4: Get a candle. You sent word to the doctor?
- 38:46Speaker 1: Starts away.
- 38:48Speaker 11: Mrs.
- 38:48Speaker 1: Hawkins, holding Jim back.
- 38:51Speaker 9: Yes.
- 38:52Speaker 6: What are you going to do?
- 38:54Speaker 4: The Captain said I was to get the money he
- 38:56Speaker 4: owes us out of his sea chest, and I'm going
- 38:58Speaker 4: to do it.
- 38:59Speaker 1: Moves toward Boddy.
- 39:01Speaker 4: Jim.
- 39:02Speaker 1: Jim gets key from Captain's hand.
- 39:05Speaker 8: Oh, Jim, don't.
- 39:07Speaker 4: Bring the candle, Mother.
- 39:08Speaker 1: Goes upstairs, followed by Mrs. Hawkins. Off stage.
- 39:13Speaker 4: Ah!
- 39:14Speaker 1: Mrs. Hawkins, still at door.
- 39:17Speaker 6: What is it?
- 39:18Speaker 1: Jim, off stage.
- 39:20Speaker 15: A quadrant.
- 39:21Speaker 4: Tobacco.
- 39:22Speaker 1: But the money, Jim, the money. Jim enters on stairs.
- 39:28Speaker 3: Here it is.
- 39:29Speaker 6: I'll take my due. Not a penny more. What kind
- 39:32Speaker 6: of money is this?
- 39:35Speaker 4: Pieces of eight. Spanish and French.
- 39:37Speaker 6: Spanish and French? Jim, who was this man?
- 39:42Speaker 4: A pirate. A buccaneer. He sailed in that ship with Flint.
- 39:46Speaker 11: Pirates?
- 39:48Speaker 4: All of them.
- 39:49Speaker 6: Pirate' s gold. Put it back. I won't touch it.
- 39:52Speaker 11: Lock it up again.
- 39:53Speaker 6: All right, Mother.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Exits and trunk slams. Re-enters.' It' s all right.
- 40:00Speaker 4: I've got it.
- 40:01Speaker 6: Got what?
- 40:02Speaker 5: The.
- 40:03Speaker 4: Package he said I was to take to the doctor.
- 40:06Speaker 1: Pews taps.' What' s that?
- 40:08Speaker 4: The blind man. He was here before for the captain.
- 40:11Speaker 6: They' ll be murdering us all now.
- 40:14Speaker 1: Jim, drawing Mother downstairs.' Come, Mother, quick!
- 40:19Speaker 6: the back way i can't my legs won't move.
- 40:24Speaker 1: Come come they exit flagstone outside door for pew to
- 40:29Speaker 1: tap noise outside down with.
- 40:32Speaker 2: The door if they won't open it beat it down
- 40:36Speaker 2: will you open it or must we break.
- 40:38Speaker 1: It down when no answer comes down with the.
- 40:42Speaker 2: Door then men all right down.
- 40:46Speaker 1: With her The men batter on the door as if
- 40:49Speaker 1: with a large log. Finally the door is splintered to pieces.
- 40:54Speaker 2: Aye, that's it, that's it. Now in, in, in with you.
- 40:58Speaker 1: There is a shout as the men rush in. Black Dog, Mary, Hands, O'Brien,
- 41:03Speaker 1: followed by Pew, to left center.
- 41:07Speaker 2: Now scatter, search everywhere, quick, quick I say. Well, what's
- 41:13Speaker 2: the matter? Why do you stop?
- 41:15Speaker 5: What is it?
- 41:16Speaker 2: What is it?
- 41:17Speaker 1: Mary and hands over body. Black Dog at steps. Anderson
- 41:22Speaker 1: to fireplace right. Mary, who with the other men have
- 41:26Speaker 1: stumbled over Bill and stand eyeing him.
- 41:29Speaker 3: Bill's dead.
- 41:30Speaker 2: Well, well.
- 41:32Speaker 11: He's dead.
- 41:34Speaker 15: Done for. Don't you understand, Pew?
- 41:37Speaker 2: Search him, you shirking lobbers. The charge's here somewhere and
- 41:41Speaker 2: we are gonna get it. Find that chest.
- 41:44Speaker 5: Look for it.
- 41:45Speaker 12: It's here, Pew.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Open it quick.
- 41:49Speaker 12: It's locked.
- 41:51Speaker 1: Anderson, with poker, crosses to left.
- 41:54Speaker 2: Break it open. Smash it open.
- 41:56Speaker 1: Chest thrown downstairs and smashed open.
- 41:59Speaker 2: Is it there? The chart?
- 42:02Speaker 3: They've been here before us.
- 42:04Speaker 12: Someone's turned the chest. Allow and aloft.
- 42:08Speaker 1: Hands, who has been searching through the chest.
- 42:11Speaker 15: That's some money.
- 42:12Speaker 2: Hang the money. It's Flint's fist I want. Flint's fist.
- 42:18Speaker 12: We don't see it nowhere.
- 42:20Speaker 3: And Bill's been overhauled already. Nothing left.
- 42:23Speaker 2: It's that boy. I wish I'd put his eyes out.
- 42:27Speaker 2: That sharp must be here somewhere. Scatter and look for it.
- 42:32Speaker 1: The men dash upstairs and shout.
- 42:35Speaker 2: Look everywhere. Under the table. Beyond the curtains. Turn everything
- 42:40Speaker 2: upside down.
- 42:42Speaker 1: The men turn over the tables, tear down the hangings,
- 42:45Speaker 1: HANS TIPS OVER THE CHAIRS AND SCATTERS OVER THE PLACE
- 42:48Speaker 1: ALL THE FURNITURE. A WHISTLE IS HEARD.
- 42:51Speaker 2: WHAT'S THAT?
- 42:53Speaker 12: IT'S DIRK'S WARNING. WE'LL HAVE TO BUDGE, MATES.
- 42:57Speaker 2: BUDGE, YOU SKULK. WE DON'T STIR UNTIL WE FIND THAT CHART.
- 43:02Speaker 12: BUT THAT SIGNAL.
- 43:03Speaker 2: YOU HAVE YOUR.
- 43:04Speaker 5: HANDS ON IT.
- 43:05Speaker 2: SCATTER AND LOOK FOR IT. NO SHIMMER MY SOUL IF
- 43:08Speaker 2: I HAD MY EYES.
- 43:11Speaker 1: ANOTHER WHISTLE. HANS RUSHES IN AND THE OTHERS.
- 43:15Speaker 5: WELL?
- 43:16Speaker 2: Well, why are you coming back?
- 43:19Speaker 5: Twice.
- 43:19Speaker 15: You heard. Jack's called. We better go.
- 43:23Speaker 1: Pew stands in the doorway.
- 43:26Speaker 2: Not one of you are going to leave. Why, you fools,
- 43:29Speaker 2: you have your hands on thousands and you hang a leg.
- 43:33Speaker 2: You'd be rich as kings and you stand there malingering.
- 43:37Speaker 2: And I'm to lose my chance for you. If you
- 43:41Speaker 2: had the pluck of a weevil and a biscuit, you'd
- 43:44Speaker 2: stand your ground.
- 43:46Speaker 12: We're not going to stand here and be caught.
- 43:48Speaker 2: Not one of you goes till you find it. Or
- 43:52Speaker 2: maybe you've got it.
- 43:54Speaker 1: The whistle again and sharply.
- 43:57Speaker 2: And you're hiding it on me.
- 44:00Speaker 15: Stand out of the way, Pew. We're going.
- 44:03Speaker 2: You're not. I believe you've got it and trying to
- 44:06Speaker 2: hide it from me. Give it to me or you
- 44:09Speaker 2: don't pass.
- 44:11Speaker 1: There's the sound of horses approaching.
- 44:14Speaker 12: Don't you hear them coming?
- 44:16Speaker 3: Those horses.
- 44:16Speaker 15: Out of the way.
- 44:19Speaker 2: Not until you give it.
- 44:21Speaker 15: All right, then, men.
- 44:22Speaker 5: At him.
- 44:24Speaker 1: They make a lunge at Pew, who strikes back with
- 44:26Speaker 1: his staff. They quickly overpower him and throw him into
- 44:30Speaker 1: a far corner of the room. Then they rush out
- 44:33Speaker 1: as the horses are heard stopping nearby.
- 44:36Speaker 5: Dr.
- 44:37Speaker 1: Livesy's voice is heard giving orders without.
- 44:40Speaker 7: There they go. After them.
- 44:43Speaker 1: Pew, groping blindly.
- 44:45Speaker 2: BLACK DOGS! HANDS! YOU WON'T LEAVE OLD PEW! YOU'LL SAVE
- 44:50Speaker 2: YOUR OLD BAIT!
- 44:51Speaker 1: JIM GLIDES IN.
- 44:53Speaker 2: YOU'LL SAVE... WHO'S THERE? WHO IS IT?
- 44:56Speaker 15: ANSWER!
- 44:56Speaker 4: IT IS I, JIM HAWKINS.
- 44:59Speaker 2: YOU! YOU STOLE THAT SHART! BY THE LIVING THUNDER IF
- 45:04Speaker 2: I GET MY HANDS ON YOU I'LL TEAR YOUR HEART OUT, HUG!
- 45:08Speaker 1: MAKING BIG SWEEPS WITH HIS CANE, HE RUSHES ABOUT. JIM, TERRIFIED, Help!
- 45:14Speaker 3: Squire!
- 45:15Speaker 4: Dr.
- 45:15Speaker 5: Livesey! Help!
- 45:17Speaker 2: I'll get you, you young rat! I'll get you!
- 45:21Speaker 1: Jim, as Pew comes nearer, darts out the door.
- 45:25Speaker 3: Squire!
- 45:26Speaker 8: Dr. Livesey! Help!
- 45:27Speaker 5: Quick!
- 45:28Speaker 2: I'll get you! I'll wring your neck!
- 45:32Speaker 1: He rushes out the door. Then of a sudden there
- 45:35Speaker 1: is the report of a pistol. There is a shriek,
- 45:38Speaker 1: and then Jim rushes into the room. Almost at once,
- 45:41Speaker 1: he is followed by the squire and Dr. Livesy.
- 45:45Speaker 7: Jim, what's this story we hear about pirates?
- 45:48Speaker 4: It's true, sir.
- 45:49Speaker 8: This was Flint's crew.
- 45:51Speaker 4: Yes, sir, and that man there was Flint's mate.
- 45:54Speaker 8: But if this is true.
- 45:56Speaker 4: Here, sir, is the proof of it.
- 45:59Speaker 1: Offers packet.
- 46:00Speaker 7: What's this?
- 46:02Speaker 4: I took it from his sea chest there. It's a
- 46:04Speaker 4: map showing where Flint buried his treasure.
- 46:07Speaker 5: What?
- 46:07Speaker 7: By God, if this should be.
- 46:10Speaker 8: Thousands upon thousands Flint buried, and hundreds have tried to
- 46:13Speaker 8: find it. If this should prove the clue to Flint's treasure...
- 46:17Speaker 8: Tall tree.
- 46:18Speaker 15: Spyglass.
- 46:19Speaker 7: Mountain bearing a point to the north of NNE.
- 46:23Speaker 1: Black dog appears.
- 46:25Speaker 7: Skeleton Island ESE. The gold is in the north cache.
- 46:30Speaker 8: By gad, Livesey, that's it! We'll go to Bristol. We'll
- 46:34Speaker 8: fit out a ship, and we'll have that treasure if
- 46:36Speaker 8: it takes a year. And Hawkins shall go with us.
- 46:40Speaker 4: You don't mean it? To go to sea with a
- 46:42Speaker 4: piping bosun and a pigtail singing seaman, bound for an
- 46:46Speaker 4: unknown island to seek buried treasure?

- 47:22Speaker 1: Act II. Scene 1. The Quay at Bristol. The entire
- 47:27Speaker 1: back of stage is taken up with a sailing vessel
- 47:30Speaker 1: tied to her pier. Upon her side there is painted
- 47:34Speaker 1: her name, Hispaniola. A gangplank comes from the ship's side
- 47:39Speaker 1: down to the wharf. At right, some dusty old buildings
- 47:42Speaker 1: line the side down right intermediate, where there is a
- 47:46Speaker 1: small inn with a sign of a spyglass hanging from
- 47:49Speaker 1: above the door. There is a bench in front of
- 47:52Speaker 1: this inn, and from its window hangs a cage with
- 47:55Speaker 1: a parrot. The left side is taken up with a
- 47:59Speaker 1: large warehouse, down to left intermediate, where there is the
- 48:03Speaker 1: entrance to a street. the center of the stage is
- 48:07Speaker 1: taken up with barrels and coils of rope and boxes.
- 48:11Speaker 1: When the curtain rises, three or four men, each with
- 48:14Speaker 1: a box or a barrel upon his shoulders, are starting
- 48:17Speaker 1: for the ship from the wharf. They go up the
- 48:20Speaker 1: gangplank upon the ship, and then vanish from sight. Then
- 48:24Speaker 1: the stage is deserted. From his cage the parrot calls,
- 48:29Speaker 1: Pieces of eight! Stand by to go about! Pieces of eight!
- 48:33Speaker 1: FINALLY THERE COMES HURRIELY IN FROM LEFT INTERMEDIATE BLACK DOG,
- 48:38Speaker 1: FOLLOWED BY A MAN. BLACK DOG GOES TO THE IN
- 48:41Speaker 1: DOOR AT RIGHT INTERMEDIATE AND PEERS IN. WITHIN MEN CAN
- 48:46Speaker 1: BE SEEN DRINKING, AT TIMES BITS OF SONG COME OUT,
- 48:50Speaker 1: A ROYSTERING SCENE. FRUIT GIRL, DOWN LEFT, SEATED. BLACK DOG
- 48:57Speaker 1: ENTERS FROM STREET UP LEFT, GOES TO WINDOW, TURNS FROM
- 49:01Speaker 1: DOOR TO HIS COMPANION.
- 49:03Speaker 12: See that man in there with one leg, hopping about
- 49:06Speaker 12: on a crutch.
- 49:08Speaker 5: Yes.
- 49:09Speaker 12: You go up to him, quiet-like, and say, Silver, there's
- 49:13Speaker 12: a man out there as would like to talk to you.
- 49:17Speaker 1: As the man starts in.
- 49:19Speaker 12: Quiet-like.
- 49:20Speaker 1: Remember the man goes in black dog gazes through the
- 49:24Speaker 1: window for a moment then he goes up to the
- 49:27Speaker 1: ship and stares at her from within the inn there
- 49:31Speaker 1: comes sound of songs and ribaldry at last silver appears
- 49:35Speaker 1: at the door left.
- 49:37Speaker 13: Who's looking for long john silver Black Dog turns. Black Dog.
- 49:42Speaker 12: A nice turn you did me, leaving me there at
- 49:45Speaker 12: the cove.
- 49:45Speaker 13: And a nice turn you all did me with your bungling,
- 49:49Speaker 13: you and Pew and the rest of you, letting a
- 49:51Speaker 13: fortune slip through your fingers.
- 49:53Speaker 1: Points inside the inn where the men are singing.
- 49:56Speaker 13: Look at him there. All you're good for is to
- 49:58Speaker 13: come whining to Silver and drink his grog.
- 50:01Speaker 12: Easy there, Long John.
- 50:03Speaker 13: Well, it's so, isn't it? Isn't it?
- 50:06Speaker 1: Black Dog comes up confidentially as if having something to tell.
- 50:10Speaker 12: When we all ran from that place, I got lost
- 50:14Speaker 12: in the fog.
- 50:15Speaker 1: Looks about cautiously.
- 50:18Speaker 11: Well?
- 50:19Speaker 12: Well, I must have run in a circle for I
- 50:22Speaker 12: landed up again where I started.
- 50:25Speaker 4: The end?
- 50:26Speaker 1: Black Dog goes to him center, nods.
- 50:30Speaker 12: It was dark and I crept up to the windy.
- 50:33Speaker 4: Yes.
- 50:34Speaker 12: There was Billy Bones, dead upon the floor. And at
- 50:38Speaker 12: a table, three of them pawing over a chart.
- 50:42Speaker 13: Flint's fist.
- 50:43Speaker 12: Flint's fist.
- 50:45Speaker 13: Three of them, you say?
- 50:47Speaker 12: One was a boy. He'd got the chart and given
- 50:50Speaker 12: it to the men.
- 50:51Speaker 13: And the men?
- 50:52Speaker 12: One they called Doctor.
- 50:54Speaker 13: And the other, the other?
- 50:56Speaker 12: He was older and looked your country gentleman.
- 51:00Speaker 13: His name?
- 51:01Speaker 12: It was Squire. Squire something, or.
- 51:05Speaker 13: Squire Trelawney?
- 51:07Speaker 1: Black Dog astonished.
- 51:09Speaker 12: The very same.
- 51:11Speaker 13: Ha, I guessed it, I guessed it.
- 51:14Speaker 9: But.
- 51:15Speaker 1: Silver points to Hispaniola.
- 51:17Speaker 13: See that boat? That belongs to Squire Trelawney.
- 51:21Speaker 1: As Black Dog starts.
- 51:23Speaker 13: And she's sailing on sealed orders.
- 51:26Speaker 12: Then, you know... The.
- 51:29Speaker 13: Squire and I have already passed the time of day.
- 51:31Speaker 13: I've been watching him. I've been wondering what this is
- 51:33Speaker 13: all about.
- 51:35Speaker 1: With sudden change.
- 51:37Speaker 13: That's why I have all the men in there now.
- 51:39Speaker 13: Any of them see you down at the cove?
- 51:41Speaker 12: None but the boy. And he saw only Pew and me.
- 51:45Speaker 15: Good.
- 51:46Speaker 1: Confidentially.
- 51:48Speaker 13: They haven't shipped their crew yet. I'm going to try
- 51:50Speaker 13: to make our friends here take us to Flint's treasure,
- 51:52Speaker 13: in their own ship. I even find the treasure for us.
- 51:55Speaker 13: And then.
- 51:57Speaker 12: What then?
- 51:58Speaker 1: Sinister.
- 52:00Speaker 13: Then we'll pay him for it.
- 52:01Speaker 1: Trelawney and Smollett appear upon the ship. Silver points them
- 52:05Speaker 1: out to Black Dog, turns him around.
- 52:08Speaker 13: Either one of those your squire?
- 52:10Speaker 12: Aye, the old man.
- 52:13Speaker 13: Go inside. You'll find all the men there, but not
- 52:15Speaker 13: a word.
- 52:16Speaker 1: Black Dog goes into the inn. Silver wanders up the
- 52:19Speaker 1: quay as Smollett and the squire come down from the boat.
- 52:24Speaker 9: I will try, sir, but they are not so easy
- 52:26Speaker 9: to get.
- 52:27Speaker 8: My dear Captain Smollett, there must be plenty of men.
- 52:32Speaker 9: But your requirements are peculiar, sir.
- 52:36Speaker 8: What, merely men? Not afraid of anything on sea or land? Surely, sir,
- 52:41Speaker 8: English manhood has not gone back so far that the
- 52:44Speaker 8: spirit of adventure is lost.
- 52:47Speaker 9: Oh, very well, sir. But asking your pardon, I don't
- 52:51Speaker 9: know the nature of this voyage.
- 52:53Speaker 8: And are not to. Sealed orders, sir.
- 52:57Speaker 9: Quite right. But you must realize this makes it difficult
- 53:01Speaker 9: to get men. Honest men.
- 53:04Speaker 8: It shouldn't. England has stood for centuries for her sailors
- 53:08Speaker 8: to unknown lands, and on unknown seas, her drakes and rallies,
- 53:12Speaker 8: and hawks.
- 53:13Speaker 11: And— Very well, sir.
- 53:16Speaker 9: I'll do the best I can.
- 53:18Speaker 1: Starts away up left. Squire follows him up.
- 53:23Speaker 8: And make haste, captain. My friends come within three days.
- 53:27Speaker 8: I must be ready then.
- 53:28Speaker 9: I'll try, sir.
- 53:31Speaker 1: He goes off left upstage. The squire is going toward
- 53:34Speaker 1: the vessel when Silver puts himself in his way. Silver,
- 53:39Speaker 1: left center, indicates ship.
- 53:41Speaker 13: I never tire of looking at her, sir.
- 53:44Speaker 8: Pretty, isn't she?
- 53:45Speaker 13: Never saw sweeter little craft.
- 53:48Speaker 1: Squire, indicates Silver's loss of leg.
- 53:52Speaker 8: Not a seafaring man?
- 53:54Speaker 13: I lost that, sir, in defense of my country.
- 53:56Speaker 1: Squire, drawing nearer, interested.
- 54:00Speaker 8: Did you now?
- 54:01Speaker 13: Aye, sir, under the immortal Hawks. What?
- 54:05Speaker 8: Not really?
- 54:05Speaker 13: A fact, sir.
- 54:07Speaker 8: Pensioned, of course?
- 54:09Speaker 13: No, sir, never asked it, never needed it. I keep
- 54:12Speaker 13: the spyglass there.
- 54:13Speaker 8: Still, you should have your reward.
- 54:16Speaker 13: I have, sir.
- 54:17Speaker 1: Salutes.
- 54:19Speaker 13: In England, my country, God bless her.
- 54:22Speaker 1: Squire, enthusiastically.
- 54:24Speaker 8: A fine spirit, the true spirit of an Englishman.
- 54:29Speaker 13: There's only one thing. My health's not been good ashore.
- 54:32Speaker 13: Having been to sea so long, that's why I keep
- 54:34Speaker 13: my inn here on the quay, where I can get
- 54:36Speaker 13: a bit of salt air and meet seafaring men. Why,
- 54:38Speaker 13: every sailor that comes to Port knows Long John Silver.
- 54:40Speaker 8: Do they now?
- 54:42Speaker 13: They're all welcome, sir, whether they can pay or no,
- 54:44Speaker 13: because of my love of her out there.
- 54:46Speaker 15: See.
- 54:47Speaker 1: The Squire Trelawney starts rather surprised at Silver.
- 54:51Speaker 13: I tell you, when the sea once got in to you, sir,
- 54:53Speaker 13: it's hard to ever lose her. May sound queer to you, sir,
- 54:56Speaker 13: but it's a fact.
- 54:58Speaker 11: Squire.
- 54:59Speaker 1: Studying Silver.
- 55:01Speaker 8: No, no, I think I understand.
- 55:05Speaker 13: When I think of the times I've seen dirty weather
- 55:07Speaker 13: and clear fights at close quarters, hand to hand, and
- 55:09Speaker 13: cutlass against cutlass, against pirate and buccaneer.
- 55:13Speaker 1: Squire starts, but Silver hurries on.
- 55:16Speaker 13: Then I think to me in there doling out grog, and, sir,
- 55:18Speaker 13: it's like torture when I come out here and see
- 55:21Speaker 13: a trim little schooner like that assailing. Why, I'd give
- 55:23Speaker 13: my life, sir, for just one more chance at the
- 55:25Speaker 13: old sea.
- 55:26Speaker 11: Squire.
- 55:27Speaker 1: Who has been thinking and studying Silver.
- 55:30Speaker 8: You say you know every seafaring man in Bristol?
- 55:33Speaker 13: Aye, sir, they all come to the Spyglass.
- 55:36Speaker 8: Well, suppose, just suppose now, I wanted a special sort
- 55:41Speaker 8: of crew, men, not only sailors, but fighters, perhaps.
- 55:46Speaker 1: Silver points to Inn.
- 55:48Speaker 13: There are men in there now, enough to man this boat,
- 55:50Speaker 13: men who have sailed as I have sailed, against Flint himself.
- 55:54Speaker 1: Silver's parrot begins to squawk.
- 55:57Speaker 13: Excuse me, sir. That's my parrot. I call him Captain Flint.
- 55:59Speaker 13: That's why I piped up when he heard the name.
- 56:02Speaker 8: You mean to say you have sailed against Flint?
- 56:06Speaker 13: It's to him I owe the loss of this.
- 56:08Speaker 1: Indicates lag.
- 56:09Speaker 13: You see, sir, that's what makes it so hard to
- 56:11Speaker 13: have been through all that and to sit idle and
- 56:13Speaker 13: hear the sea of calling, begging for a chance, sir.
- 56:15Speaker 13: A chance that means life, sir.
- 56:17Speaker 8: Suppose now you were offered that chance.
- 56:21Speaker 13: You don't mean it, sir.
- 56:23Speaker 8: You could help me get together a crew?
- 56:25Speaker 13: Yes, sir.
- 56:27Speaker 8: At once.
- 56:27Speaker 13: I' ll see to everything, sir.
- 56:30Speaker 1: As the squire starts, Silver goes on quickly.
- 56:33Speaker 13: But there are honest men in there, Englishmen, ready for
- 56:36Speaker 13: any purpose.
- 56:36Speaker 8: I like your talk, sir. You're engaged.'' Oh, thank you, sir.''
- 56:42Speaker 8: And now about a crew. My captain has found difficulty.
- 56:46Speaker 13: Might I ask, sir, what sort of voyage this is
- 56:48Speaker 13: to be?
- 56:49Speaker 14: Why?
- 56:50Speaker 13: So I may judge about the men.
- 56:53Speaker 8: I want tough men, such as you just spoke of.
- 56:56Speaker 8: Men willing to board Flint himself.
- 56:59Speaker 13: I know the very men for you. They're in there now.
- 57:01Speaker 13: You go to your cablet and I'll send them to you.
- 57:03Speaker 8: Very well. If I could get them before Captain Smollett returns?
- 57:08Speaker 13: I'm sure you can.
- 57:09Speaker 8: I'll show him. He with his trouble about getting honest men.
- 57:14Speaker 8: Send them along, Silver.
- 57:16Speaker 1: Starts up boat.
- 57:18Speaker 9: Yes, sir.
- 57:18Speaker 15: At once, sir.
- 57:19Speaker 13: And I want to thank you, sir.
- 57:21Speaker 11: Squire.
- 57:22Speaker 1: Goes up on ship.
- 57:23Speaker 8: Not at all. Glad we met, Silver.
- 57:26Speaker 13: It's a great thing for me, sir, a great thing.
- 57:29Speaker 1: The squire disappears in the schooner. Silver's manner changes at once.
- 57:34Speaker 13: Heaven has sent him to me.
- 57:36Speaker 1: He hastens to the door of the inn and calls.
- 57:39Speaker 13: Hands, arrow, Morgan, Anderson, Mary, all you men.
- 57:43Speaker 1: They all come out. Black Dog, next to Silver.
- 57:47Speaker 12: Was I right?
- 57:49Speaker 13: It's Flint's treasuries after, all right.
- 57:52Speaker 1: Hands makes movement toward ship. There is a slight change
- 57:55Speaker 1: of manner.
- 57:56Speaker 13: I' m to engage his crew.
- 57:58Speaker 1: There is much astonishment and guffawing among the crew at this.' Easy.
- 58:03Speaker 13: There, you are to be that crew. You are to
- 58:05Speaker 13: go to him now. You, Arrow, are to be mate.
- 58:07Speaker 14: Aye, captain.
- 58:08Speaker 13: Anderson Coxwayne.'' Coxwayne, is it?'' Mary, you Boatswayne.
- 58:14Speaker 3: My old job.
- 58:15Speaker 13: The rest to you as he pleases. He's waiting in
- 58:18Speaker 13: his cabin for you. Go now, quick. Act natural, nothing suspicious.
- 58:22Speaker 1: As they start away.
- 58:24Speaker 13: Look innocent and fierce.
- 58:26Speaker 11: On with you.
- 58:27Speaker 1: They start to leave when Silver holds back Black Dog,
- 58:30Speaker 1: who crosses last.
- 58:32Speaker 4: Wait.
- 58:33Speaker 18: Well?
- 58:34Speaker 13: He might recognize you.
- 58:36Speaker 12: I told you I saw only the boy.
- 58:39Speaker 13: We'll take no chances. You'll stay hidden in there till
- 58:42Speaker 13: we sail.
- 58:43Speaker 1: As Black Dog makes a gesture of protest, he pushes
- 58:46Speaker 1: him toward the inn door.
- 58:48Speaker 13: We've got him baited, and we'll get him, hook and all.
- 58:51Speaker 1: He shoves black dog into the inn and then he
- 58:54Speaker 1: goes quickly up on the ship pieces of art pieces

- 59:05Speaker 1: bristol the hispaniola ready to sail when the curtain rises

- 59:30Speaker 1: men work, some sing a rude sea song, but not
- 59:33Speaker 1: the 15 men on a dead man's chest. Others are
- 59:37Speaker 1: shouting and talking excitedly. About the whole scene, there is
- 59:41Speaker 1: an air of excitement and noise. Hans, as the last
- 59:45Speaker 1: man comes up the plank.
- 59:47Speaker 2: Adol.
- 59:49Speaker 1: Anderson comes aboard with a box.
- 59:52Speaker 2: Aye, aye, sir.
- 59:53Speaker 14: That's all of it.
- 59:55Speaker 1: Hans turns to Smollett and salutes.
- 59:58Speaker 15: Captain Smollett.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: Smollett, upper deck.
- 1:00:02Speaker 9: Well, Mr. Hands?
- 1:00:04Speaker 15: Everything right, sir.
- 1:00:06Speaker 9: Sure you've missed nothing?
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: Sure, sir.
- 1:00:09Speaker 9: All ready to cast off?
- 1:00:11Speaker 15: All, sir, all ready. Shall I give the word, sir?
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: Black Dog enters.
- 1:00:17Speaker 9: Squire Trelawney is not here yet. Have all the men
- 1:00:20Speaker 9: stand by.
- 1:00:21Speaker 13: Aye, aye, sir.
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: Mr.
- 1:00:23Speaker 9: Hands?
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: Smollett, with change.
- 1:00:28Speaker 9: Who gave you the orders for the stowing of those stores?
- 1:00:30Speaker 15: I thought you did, sir.
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: Smollett, dismissing him.
- 1:00:35Speaker 15: Very well. Aye, aye, sir.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: Goes out. For a moment Smollett stands as if thinking,
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: and then he turns as if to follow hands. Meanwhile
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: Black Dog has sneaked upon the scene and is slinking
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: up the gangplank when Smollett turns and sees him.
- 1:00:52Speaker 9: Well, my man, who are you?
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: Black Dog on gangplank.
- 1:00:59Speaker 12: A friend of the crew, sir. I have a message.
- 1:01:03Speaker 9: This boat is ready to sail. No one boards her now.
- 1:01:07Speaker 12: But, sir, it's important. Most important, I see him.
- 1:01:12Speaker 5: Who?
- 1:01:14Speaker 12: Silver, sir. Long John Silver.
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: Smollett. Calls.
- 1:01:19Speaker 9: Silver? John Silver?
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: Silver. Without.
- 1:01:25Speaker 13: Aye, sir.
- 1:01:26Speaker 9: Man to see you?
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: Silver, coming.
- 1:01:30Speaker 15: Coming, sir, coming.
- 1:01:30Speaker 13: What is it, sir?
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: Sees Black Dog and starts.
- 1:01:34Speaker 9: This fellow here says he has a message for you.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: Silver, recovering himself and feigning surprise.
- 1:01:41Speaker 13: Message for me, my good man?
- 1:01:44Speaker 5: Aye.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: Silver, noticing that Smollett is watching and that Black Dog
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: is growing embarrassed.
- 1:01:50Speaker 13: Well, well, speak up, my man.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: Black Dog indicates in.
- 1:01:56Speaker 12: There's someone there as would like to talk to you.
- 1:01:59Speaker 12: He said it was important.
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: Silver to Smollett.
- 1:02:03Speaker 13: I don't know who it could be, nor what he wants.
- 1:02:05Speaker 13: Can I go ashore, sir?
- 1:02:07Speaker 9: We're all ready to cast off.
- 1:02:10Speaker 13: I won't be but a jiffy, sir.
- 1:02:12Speaker 9: Very well.
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: Goes out.
- 1:02:14Speaker 13: Thank you, sir.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: Comes down with Black Dog and turns fiercely upon him left.
- 1:02:20Speaker 13: By all the powers, what you trying to do?
- 1:02:23Speaker 12: That boat's sailing.
- 1:02:25Speaker 5: Well?
- 1:02:26Speaker 12: It'll never sail without me. If I don't go, I'll
- 1:02:30Speaker 12: blow up the whole thing.
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: As Silver starts to threaten him.
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: I will.
- 1:02:36Speaker 11: I'm going.
- 1:02:37Speaker 12: You hear?
- 1:02:38Speaker 13: You'll do as I say.
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: Hands comes rushing down. Silver crosses to gangplank.
- 1:02:44Speaker 13: How now, Hands?
- 1:02:46Speaker 15: That captain's smart.
- 1:02:48Speaker 13: What's he done?
- 1:02:49Speaker 15: He's down below, snooping around.
- 1:02:51Speaker 13: You put the powder where I told you?
- 1:02:53Speaker 5: Aye.
- 1:02:54Speaker 13: And their men bunked with ours?
- 1:02:56Speaker 5: Aye.
- 1:02:57Speaker 13: Did he notice it?
- 1:02:59Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 1:02:59Speaker 15: He acts suspicious-like.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: Silver turns angrily on Black Dog.
- 1:03:06Speaker 13: You hear that, Black Dog?
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: You hear?
- 1:03:08Speaker 13: Now you go inside there and wait. Go, I say,
- 1:03:10Speaker 13: or by thunder I'll run you through.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: Black Dog driven to the inn door.
- 1:03:15Speaker 12: You'll never go without me.
- 1:03:17Speaker 5: Never.
- 1:03:19Speaker 19: Go.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: Black Dog goes in. Silver storms.
- 1:03:23Speaker 13: Love never came with that man.
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: Suddenly.
- 1:03:27Speaker 13: Hans, Black Dog doesn't go on this cruise.
- 1:03:29Speaker 9: Aye, aye.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: Silver, as Squire and Dr. Livesy come from Street, left upstage.
- 1:03:36Speaker 13: Go inside there.
- 1:03:38Speaker 9: Watch him.
- 1:03:38Speaker 13: Don't leave him out of your sight and wait your chance.
- 1:03:40Speaker 13: And when you get it, you know what to do.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: Stiletto, boss. Hans goes in as Dr. Livesy and Squire
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: come down.
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: Aye, aye, sir.
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: Exits into Door of Inn.
- 1:03:52Speaker 8: I don't know what to make of it.
- 1:03:54Speaker 7: I am sure he'll come, Squire.
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: Silver comes forward.
- 1:03:59Speaker 13: Everything ready and ship-shaped. Just waiting for you, sir.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: Squire Trelawney, testily.
- 1:04:05Speaker 8: Hawkins hasn't come.
- 1:04:07Speaker 7: You told him you might stay till the last minute
- 1:04:09Speaker 7: with his mother.
- 1:04:10Speaker 13: If we wait, we'll miss the tide. That means another
- 1:04:12Speaker 13: twelve hours delay, sir.
- 1:04:14Speaker 8: Look at her there. Everything ready? And to be held
- 1:04:17Speaker 8: up now? By gad, it's hard, sir.
- 1:04:21Speaker 13: Would you mind if I took my old shipmate, Captain Flint,
- 1:04:23Speaker 13: with us? He goes on all my voyages with me.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: Starts away and then stops.
- 1:04:28Speaker 13: Oh, perhaps you gentlemen would join us, and a glass of.
- 1:04:30Speaker 8: Grog, or— Thank you, Silver. But if you'll excuse me.
- 1:04:35Speaker 9: Certainly, sir.
- 1:04:35Speaker 13: I understand, sir.
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: Goes in.
- 1:04:38Speaker 8: An honest fellow, and capable.
- 1:04:41Speaker 7: Well, Squire, I don't usually put much faith in your discoveries,
- 1:04:44Speaker 7: but John Silver suits me.
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: Start for boat.
- 1:04:48Speaker 8: That man's a perfect trump. We've grown quite familiar.
- 1:04:52Speaker 7: Squire, you haven't told him anything.
- 1:04:55Speaker 8: Not a word. I have been most discreet. On the contrary,
- 1:05:00Speaker 8: I've got all his little secrets from him.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: As they start for the boat, he leaves a.
- 1:05:05Speaker 8: Wife to manage his inn.
- 1:05:07Speaker 11: Indeed.
- 1:05:08Speaker 8: A lady of color.
- 1:05:10Speaker 5: No.
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: They laugh and go up into the boat, and her Jim,
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: left upstage with Bundle, goes to inn and knocks.
- 1:05:19Speaker 13: Well, my lad?
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: Silver, Mr.
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: Silver, I'm looking for.
- 1:05:22Speaker 13: That's my name, lad, and who may you be?
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: Hence Silver a letter sent her.
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: Hawkins, sir.
- 1:05:29Speaker 13: Oh, I see. You are our new cabin boy. Pleased
- 1:05:32Speaker 13: I am to see you. We've been waiting for you.
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: There is a sound of commotion within the inn.
- 1:05:37Speaker 13: Oh, sir, what's that?
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: Silver puts Jim behind him, trying to cover the noise.
- 1:05:44Speaker 13: Oh, that's nothing, lad. Just the men drinking there in
- 1:05:46Speaker 13: my house.
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: I think it's a fight.
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: Black Dog, pursued by Hans, appears at the door.
- 1:05:53Speaker 12: I know my rights, and you can't stop me. I'd
- 1:05:56Speaker 12: fight the whole crew of you.
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: Exit left upstage. Jim suddenly recognizes Black Dog, cries out,
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: points excitedly to Black Dog.
- 1:06:07Speaker 11: It's Black Dog!
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: Stop him, sir, stop him!
- 1:06:11Speaker 13: Hands, after that man, quick!
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: Hands rushes out, left.
- 1:06:16Speaker 4: It was Black Dog, I'm sure of it.
- 1:06:18Speaker 13: I don't care two coppers who he is, he hasn't
- 1:06:20Speaker 13: paid his score. What did you say his name was,
- 1:06:22Speaker 13: Black what?
- 1:06:23Speaker 4: Black Dog, sir. Hasn't Mr. Trelawney told you of the Buccaneers?
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: What?
- 1:06:28Speaker 4: He was one of them, sir.
- 1:06:30Speaker 13: So, one of those swabs in my house.
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: As Hans returns, comes on from street left upstage.
- 1:06:38Speaker 8: Well?
- 1:06:39Speaker 15: He got away, sir.
- 1:06:41Speaker 13: You know who that was, Hans?
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: No, sir.
- 1:06:44Speaker 13: Black Dog. Isn't it so, Hawkins?
- 1:06:47Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 1:06:48Speaker 13: And do you know who Black Dog is?
- 1:06:50Speaker 5: No, sir.
- 1:06:52Speaker 13: One of Flint's crew.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: As Hans starts, Now, Hans, you was drinking with him
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: in there.
- 1:06:58Speaker 13: Aye, that's who you've let go. Now board with you,
- 1:07:01Speaker 13: and be a little more particular who you can sort
- 1:07:02Speaker 13: with hereafter.
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: Hans exits ship.
- 1:07:06Speaker 13: Now see here, Hawkins, this is a blessed hard thing
- 1:07:08Speaker 13: on a man like me. There's Squire Trelawney. What's he
- 1:07:10Speaker 13: to think? Here I have this confounded son of a
- 1:07:13Speaker 13: Dutchman sitting in my own house, drinking my own rum.
- 1:07:16Speaker 13: Here you comes and tells me of it plain, and
- 1:07:17Speaker 13: I let him give us a slip before my blessed deadlights.
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: It wasn't your fault.
- 1:07:22Speaker 13: Nay, that it wasn't, but it might look so.
- 1:07:24Speaker 4: I'll explain it to the squire.
- 1:07:26Speaker 13: Will you now?
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: Just as soon as I see them.
- 1:07:29Speaker 13: No, no, lad, you wait till we sail, and then
- 1:07:31Speaker 13: when he sees how I work and knows me better,
- 1:07:33Speaker 13: then you ups and tells him, and he'll understand.
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: Very well, sir.
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: There's a lad for you, and— Stops suddenly, and breaks
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: out into a laugh.
- 1:07:42Speaker 13: Why, what a precious old sea-calf I am!
- 1:07:44Speaker 4: What is it, sir?
- 1:07:45Speaker 13: That swab got away without paying a score. Three goes
- 1:07:48Speaker 13: a brum. Shiver my timbers if I hadn't forgotten my score.
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: Falls on a bench laughing.
- 1:07:53Speaker 13: Touch my buttons, but that's a good one about my score.
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: As they laugh, Squire and Dr. Livesy come down from ship.
- 1:08:00Speaker 7: Jim, my lad, we've been anxious about you.
- 1:08:03Speaker 8: Where have you been?
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: It was Mother kept me, sir. She's so afraid, and
- 1:08:09Speaker 4: she's quite alone.
- 1:08:10Speaker 8: I sent her a boy to take your place.
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: Yes, sir, and very kind it was, only he can't
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: take my place, sir.
- 1:08:18Speaker 7: That' s conceit for you, Squire.
- 1:08:21Speaker 4: oh no no sir you see there's just mother and
- 1:08:24Speaker 4: me now and we've never been parted before.
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: Dr comes up and pets jim.
- 1:08:31Speaker 7: There there jim i understand of course.
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: Silver significantly to the squire.
- 1:08:38Speaker 13: Begging your pardon sir don't you think it might be
- 1:08:40Speaker 13: good if i took him on board sir oh i'm
- 1:08:43Speaker 13: all right sir i'm.
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: All right silver crosses right to jim.
- 1:08:48Speaker 13: Come with me lad silver will show you your quarters.
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: Leads him up gangplank and now.
- 1:08:53Speaker 8: The ship's company is complete.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: And Captain Smollett comes hurrying down.
- 1:08:59Speaker 8: Well, sir, all ready to sail? We mustn't miss this tide, sir.
- 1:09:04Speaker 9: Squire Trelawney, I don't like this cruise, and I don't
- 1:09:08Speaker 9: like my crew.
- 1:09:09Speaker 12: Eh?
- 1:09:10Speaker 9: I was engaged to sail this ship under sealed orders.
- 1:09:14Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:09:15Speaker 9: Then if that is so, how is it that every
- 1:09:18Speaker 9: man before the mast knows more.
- 1:09:20Speaker 11: Than I do?
- 1:09:21Speaker 8: Squire, that's not true.
- 1:09:25Speaker 9: I learn we are going after treasure. Now, treasure is
- 1:09:29Speaker 9: ticklish work, and I don't like the treasure voyages on
- 1:09:32Speaker 9: any account. But when they're secret, and the secret's been
- 1:09:36Speaker 9: blabbed— Blabbed? Yes, sir, blabbed. Why, sir, it's life or
- 1:09:43Speaker 9: death and a close run.
- 1:09:45Speaker 8: If you're afraid.
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: Dr. Holding back Squire.
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: Squire.
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: To Smollett.
- 1:09:52Speaker 7: You say you don't like the crew. Aren't they good seamen?
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: Squire crosses right to Apple Stand.
- 1:09:58Speaker 8: I dare him to deny that.
- 1:10:00Speaker 9: Six of the men I chose were discharged.
- 1:10:04Speaker 8: They were fresh water swabs. Silver showed me that.
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: Crosses to Box. Sits.
- 1:10:10Speaker 9: And do you think it fair that this Silver— The
- 1:10:14Speaker 9: ship's cook should have had more authority than I in
- 1:10:18Speaker 9: choosing my own crew.
- 1:10:19Speaker 8: It was a chance to get men quickly.
- 1:10:22Speaker 9: A slur on me, sir.
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: Dr. Esquire is about to reply.
- 1:10:28Speaker 7: Captain Smollett, just what are you aiming at?
- 1:10:32Speaker 15: Come.
- 1:10:33Speaker 9: You gentlemen know the risks you're running.
- 1:10:36Speaker 8: We do.
- 1:10:37Speaker 9: And you are determined to go.
- 1:10:39Speaker 8: We are.
- 1:10:40Speaker 9: Then I have this to say. Without my orders, those
- 1:10:44Speaker 9: men put all the powder and arms in the forehold.
- 1:10:48Speaker 9: There's a place under our cabin. Why not put them there?
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: But— Dr. L— Stopping the squire.
- 1:10:55Speaker 7: All right, Captain.
- 1:10:57Speaker 15: What else?
- 1:10:58Speaker 9: You have some of your people with you.
- 1:11:01Speaker 8: You don't doubt them, too?
- 1:11:03Speaker 9: Birth them beside the cabin.
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: Dr. L— Intercepting the squire as he again starts to answer.
- 1:11:10Speaker 7: Go on, Captain Smollett.
- 1:11:12Speaker 9: I've heard you have a certain chart, that there are
- 1:11:18Speaker 9: crosses on that chart.
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: Squire rises, startled.
- 1:11:22Speaker 8: I never told that to a soul.
- 1:11:25Speaker 9: Every man aboard knows it, sir.
- 1:11:28Speaker 8: Then, Livesey, it must have been you.
- 1:11:31Speaker 9: I don't know who has this chart, and I don't
- 1:11:34Speaker 9: want to know, but I insist it be kept secret.
- 1:11:39Speaker 7: In short, you fare a mutiny.
- 1:11:41Speaker 9: I deny your right, sir, to put those words into
- 1:11:43Speaker 9: my mouth. No captain would be justified in going to
- 1:11:47Speaker 9: sea if he had grounds to say that.
- 1:11:50Speaker 8: What then?
- 1:11:52Speaker 9: Some of these men may be honest, perhaps all are,
- 1:11:56Speaker 9: but I am responsible for the ship's safety and the
- 1:12:00Speaker 9: life of every manjack aboard her, and I demand that
- 1:12:04Speaker 9: I be allowed to take these precautions, or I resign.
- 1:12:08Speaker 8: Well, then, you can— Wait.
- 1:12:12Speaker 7: I agree with Captain Smollett. I think it wise to
- 1:12:15Speaker 7: do as Captain Smollett says.
- 1:12:17Speaker 8: Very well, then. I am overruled.
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: Turns to Captain.
- 1:12:22Speaker 8: But let me tell you, I think the worse of you,
- 1:12:24Speaker 8: Captain Smollett. But do as you wish.
- 1:12:27Speaker 9: Thank you, sir. As soon as we are under way,
- 1:12:31Speaker 9: I'll give orders for the removal of the arms from
- 1:12:33Speaker 9: the forehold.
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: Captain goes to his position on the boat. Squire, as
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: he and Dr. Livesy follow— I should have sent him packing.
- 1:12:43Speaker 7: Squire, I think you have two honest men aboard, Captain
- 1:12:46Speaker 7: Smollett and John Silver.
- 1:12:48Speaker 9: Bows and ahoy!
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: Bows and blows.
- 1:12:53Speaker 9: Pipe all hands.
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: Enter crew.
- 1:12:56Speaker 3: Aye, aye, sir.
- 1:12:58Speaker 8: Doesn't it set you all a-tingle, Livesey?
- 1:13:01Speaker 9: Top man aloft.
- 1:13:03Speaker 13: Aye, aye, sir.
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: Squire coming up to top of gangplank.
- 1:13:08Speaker 8: Off at last, Livesey.
- 1:13:10Speaker 9: Lose the top gallant.
- 1:13:12Speaker 14: Aye, aye, sir.
- 1:13:14Speaker 8: Seaward ho! Hang the treasure.
- 1:13:20Speaker 7: Squire.
- 1:13:21Speaker 3: Squire.
- 1:13:23Speaker 8: It's the glory of the sea that's turned my head.
- 1:13:29Speaker 9: Cast off your gangplank.
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: Aye, aye, sir.
- 1:13:32Speaker 9: Aye, aye, sir. All on your main sheet.
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: Aye, aye, sir.
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: Crew does so and starts to sing Fifteen Men. Black
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: Dog enters from street and sneaks aboard. Squire has gone
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: up on bridge.
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: Jim.
- 1:13:49Speaker 15: Jim.
- 1:13:50Speaker 7: Is Jim aboard?
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: Jim dashes out from among the pirates.
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: Here, Doctor.
- 1:13:56Speaker 9: Cast off your hosser forward.
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: We're starting, sir. We're starting.
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: Jim turns towards pirates.
- 1:14:04Speaker 5: Livesy.
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: Doctor goes to Squire. Jim turns from pirates.
- 1:14:10Speaker 4: That was the song the captain used to sing. The
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: pirate's song.
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: Bustle until curtain. Act II, Scene III. The Hispaniola at
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: anchor close to Treasure Island. The part of ship shown
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: is some of the stern and most of the amidships,
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: the main part of the stage being taken up with
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: what is called the waist of the ship. Upon the right, however,
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: there is seen a small portion of the poop with
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: small brass cannon mounted upon it. In the background there
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: can be seen a vague outline of Treasure Island, with
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: Spyglass Mountain glowing in the moonlight. When the curtain rises,
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: the men are discovered in with Trelawney, Smollett, and Dr.
- 1:14:54Speaker 16: Livesy.
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: Others of the men are along the rail, some even
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: in the rigging. Smollett, on upper deck and using his
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: hands as megaphone.' All fast there, Ford?' Folding up chart, etc.
- 1:15:09Speaker 10: All fast, sir.
- 1:15:10Speaker 9: Anchorage good?
- 1:15:12Speaker 8: Aye, aye, sir.
- 1:15:13Speaker 9: The current's pretty strong here. How's she holding?
- 1:15:17Speaker 10: Firming over seven fathoms, sir.
- 1:15:19Speaker 14: She isn't dragging an inch.
- 1:15:21Speaker 5: Good.
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: Turns to crew in waist.
- 1:15:24Speaker 9: My lads, that island there is the place we've been
- 1:15:27Speaker 9: sailing to.
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: Murmurs of satisfaction among crew, etc.
- 1:15:32Speaker 9: Squire Trelawney has a word to say.
- 1:15:35Speaker 8: Captain Smollett has told me how every man of you
- 1:15:38Speaker 8: has done his duty a low and aloft, as I
- 1:15:40Speaker 8: never asked to see it better done. And so, to
- 1:15:43Speaker 8: show my appreciation, I've had Silver here make ready a
- 1:15:47Speaker 8: special mess, and double grog below decks.
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: As the crew gives a.
- 1:15:52Speaker 13: Shout, My lads, I hold this handsome, and if you
- 1:15:55Speaker 13: think as I do, you'll give a good sea cheer
- 1:15:57Speaker 13: for Squire Trelawney.
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: As the crew cheer, Come now.
- 1:16:01Speaker 10: Below, and we'll drink a health to these gentlemen.
- 1:16:03Speaker 18: Below!
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: I'll go off with talking and gesticulating left.
- 1:16:08Speaker 8: Well, Captain Smollett, you'll admit now you were wrong.
- 1:16:12Speaker 9: How so, sir?
- 1:16:13Speaker 8: A splendid voyage, a fine brisk crew, and here we are.
- 1:16:18Speaker 9: Aye, sir, here we are, but we're not home again.
- 1:16:23Speaker 8: By heavens, there's no pleasing you. I'm going below.
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: As he goes out right.
- 1:16:30Speaker 8: A trifle more of that man and I should explode.
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: Smollett, to Dr. Livesy.
- 1:16:36Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 1:16:37Speaker 9: Have you seen nothing suspicious?
- 1:16:40Speaker 15: Yes, much.
- 1:16:42Speaker 7: Then— I believe you're right.
- 1:16:45Speaker 9: I tell you, this crew is on the verge of mutiny.
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: And— Stops short as he sees hands come from men's quarters.
- 1:16:53Speaker 9: What is it, Mr. Hands?
- 1:16:55Speaker 15: Some of the men didn't report to meth, sir. Just
- 1:16:58Speaker 15: looking for him, sir.
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: As Smollett watches him keenly.
- 1:17:01Speaker 15: Haven't seen him about, Dick, sir, have you?
- 1:17:05Speaker 9: Not a soul-hands.
- 1:17:06Speaker 15: Thank you, sir.
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: Exits to upper deck, where he continues his search, now
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: and then looking surreptitiously at Dr. Livesy and Smollett, who
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: watch him. His actions are suspicious.
- 1:17:19Speaker 7: You see that?
- 1:17:21Speaker 9: There's something in the air. We'll hear from that crew
- 1:17:24Speaker 9: before the night's over.
- 1:17:25Speaker 7: I believe you're right.
- 1:17:28Speaker 9: Then we must take some precautions, squire or no squire.
- 1:17:32Speaker 7: Come below. We must make the squire listen to reason.
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: They go out. They have scarcely gone when Black Dog
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: steals in left. He makes over toward the cabin when
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: he is met by Hands, who comes from upper deck.
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: Where you going?
- 1:17:48Speaker 12: Down to that cabin. And if I find.
- 1:17:50Speaker 15: That boy— You're not. You're going below.
- 1:17:54Speaker 12: Stand out of my way.
- 1:17:56Speaker 15: You heard Silver's orders.
- 1:17:58Speaker 5: Aye.
- 1:17:59Speaker 12: I've heard his orders. And I've heard his talk and—
- 1:18:03Speaker 12: Hands whistles. so you've signalled for him shiver my timbers
- 1:18:09Speaker 12: but you'll pay for.
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: That springs at hands and they struggle pantingly without words
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: as they do so jim who has been in the
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: rigging but up so high that he is out of
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: sight now comes slowly down it is evident that he
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: has heard and now he watches the fight he comes
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: slyly down and is making toward the cabin as if
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: to go tell the captain when he is startled by
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: someone approaching in fright he turns to hide he sees
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: the apple barrel and jumps into it as mary comes
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: rushing in mary trying to separate the men here black
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: dog hens.
- 1:19:09Speaker 9: Are they?
- 1:19:09Speaker 13: Well, who's captain here, I'd like to know. By thunder,
- 1:19:12Speaker 13: I'll show you the whole pack of you. Give me
- 1:19:13Speaker 13: that knife. Give it to me.
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: Black Dog gives up his knife, and Silver turns to Hands.
- 1:19:19Speaker 13: Here, Hands, I place him in your charge. At the
- 1:19:21Speaker 13: first word, the first sign, you kill him. Understand? Kill him.
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: Black Dog, as he goes off with Hands.
- 1:19:28Speaker 12: I'll pay you for this, Long John. If he touches me,
- 1:19:31Speaker 12: I'll tear him to pieces.
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: Out left. Silver turns to the men who are in groups.
- 1:19:38Speaker 5: Strong.
- 1:19:39Speaker 9: Done, we want to.
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: wait.
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: Indicates cabin, and the men look stealthily to see if
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: anyone is about. All clear. Others murmur the same, or
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: no one here, etc.
- 1:19:52Speaker 13: Now then, out with it.
- 1:19:53Speaker 14: We men want to know how long we're going to
- 1:19:54Speaker 14: hold off.
- 1:19:56Speaker 13: By the power, so the last minute I can manage.
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: As the men make an angry start.
- 1:20:01Speaker 13: They've got that chart, and until we have it, we
- 1:20:03Speaker 13: make no move.
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: And didn't we see it this very night here in
- 1:20:07Speaker 3: their hands... If you had let us at them then.
- 1:20:10Speaker 13: And you think they'll sit still and let you cut
- 1:20:12Speaker 13: their throats while doing it, eh?
- 1:20:13Speaker 14: We're nineteen to six, and.
- 1:20:16Speaker 3: We've taken a vote.
- 1:20:17Speaker 13: Oh, have you now?
- 1:20:18Speaker 3: We know our rights, Long John.
- 1:20:21Speaker 13: Another word, George Marion.
- 1:20:23Speaker 3: Vauxhall Council, Long John. Them's rules.
- 1:20:25Speaker 4: Rules!
- 1:20:27Speaker 13: Rules, is it? I'll show you rules. You'll have all
- 1:20:29Speaker 13: the rules you want.
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: Sounds of fighting in Vauxhall. Stops suddenly.
- 1:20:34Speaker 11: What's that?
- 1:20:35Speaker 3: It's Hans and Black Dog.
- 1:20:38Speaker 13: Stop him.
- 1:20:38Speaker 9: Stop him quick.
- 1:20:39Speaker 13: Below with you all. Quick, here comes the doctor. If
- 1:20:41Speaker 13: the Squire hears that Rumpus will be ditched. Quick, don't
- 1:20:43Speaker 13: let them see anything.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: As the men rush out, Dr. Livesy and Squire and
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: Smollett come in.
- 1:20:50Speaker 9: What was that noise, Silver?
- 1:20:52Speaker 13: Noise, sir? I didn't notice anything. If there's anything wrong,
- 1:20:54Speaker 13: I'll soon settle it. You can trust me, sir.
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: Goes out quickly.
- 1:20:58Speaker 8: Of course I trust you. It's only ridiculous trouble-seekers that
- 1:21:02Speaker 8: do not.
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: It's— You're wrong, sir. Turns to Dr. Livesy.
- 1:21:07Speaker 4: Oh, sir, I've been in there, and I heard. It's mutiny, sir.
- 1:21:11Speaker 4: And talk about treasure and falling on us to get
- 1:21:13Speaker 4: our charts, sir.
- 1:21:14Speaker 5: What's that?
- 1:21:16Speaker 4: Yes, it's Silver, sir. He's a seafaring man with one
- 1:21:19Speaker 4: leg that sailed with Flint. They're pirates, Flint's crew. They
- 1:21:22Speaker 4: know what we're after, and they've used us to get
- 1:21:25Speaker 4: their ship and sail it for them to the very
- 1:21:27Speaker 4: treasure place.
- 1:21:28Speaker 5: That's it.
- 1:21:30Speaker 9: That explains everything.
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: Turns on Squire.
- 1:21:33Speaker 9: Squire, you trusted Silver?
- 1:21:37Speaker 8: I did.
- 1:21:39Speaker 9: And Silver got it from you.
- 1:21:41Speaker 7: Are you convinced now, Squire?
- 1:21:43Speaker 8: Captain, you were right. I was wrong. I own myself
- 1:21:48Speaker 8: an ass and await orders.
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: Captain, to Jim.
- 1:21:52Speaker 9: Did you hear anything of their plans?
- 1:21:54Speaker 4: They're arguing down there now. The men are all for attack,
- 1:21:57Speaker 4: but Silver's all for holding them back.
- 1:22:00Speaker 3: If he only.
- 1:22:01Speaker 9: If he only could. How many men can we count on?
- 1:22:05Speaker 4: They said they were nineteen to six.
- 1:22:07Speaker 15: Six.
- 1:22:09Speaker 9: That must be Redruth, Joyce, Hunter, and ourselves.
- 1:22:14Speaker 7: Then there are some who are doubtful.'' Well, count on six.
- 1:22:19Speaker 9: Ammunition and arms with us. By gad, if Silver can
- 1:22:24Speaker 9: only hold them off, if we can get a little time.
- 1:22:27Speaker 9: This ship needs water. Without it she can't sail. Now,
- 1:22:32Speaker 9: according to your chart, there is just one place on
- 1:22:35Speaker 9: that island where water can be had.' The stockade. Now,
- 1:22:39Speaker 9: if we can make the stockade, with our arms and provisions,
- 1:22:43Speaker 9: by heaven, sir, they'd have to come to us. If
- 1:22:46Speaker 9: we could only hold them off for a time.
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: Joyce rushes in.
- 1:22:51Speaker 9: How now, Joyce?
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: Joyce by door.
- 1:22:54Speaker 10: Begging your pardon, sir, but there's things come over that crew.
- 1:22:57Speaker 3: Go on.
- 1:22:58Speaker 10: First they tried to make Red Ruth and Hunter and
- 1:23:01Speaker 10: me join them, and when we refused, they shut themselves
- 1:23:04Speaker 10: in a corner by themselves.
- 1:23:05Speaker 3: Well?
- 1:23:06Speaker 10: I stole back and listened. It's all about a chart, sir,
- 1:23:09Speaker 10: and they're coming to demand it.
- 1:23:11Speaker 8: Good lord.
- 1:23:13Speaker 10: Silver's been trying to hold him back, sir, but I'm
- 1:23:16Speaker 10: afraid if they don't get it, sir, why, it's mutiny, sir,
- 1:23:20Speaker 10: and death.
- 1:23:21Speaker 8: What shall we do, Captain Smollett?
- 1:23:23Speaker 4: I beg your pardon, sir. You say it's time you walked?
- 1:23:26Speaker 9: Yes, yes.
- 1:23:28Speaker 4: Well then, why not give them the map, sir?
- 1:23:30Speaker 5: What?
- 1:23:31Speaker 4: They think the map that Captain Smollett has to sail
- 1:23:34Speaker 4: the ship by is the right one. Couldn't we give
- 1:23:36Speaker 4: them that?
- 1:23:37Speaker 9: Jim, I think you've hit it.
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: Turns to Squire.
- 1:23:41Speaker 9: That map you gave me was a true one, except
- 1:23:44Speaker 9: for the crosses where the treasure is buried.
- 1:23:47Speaker 8: It was.
- 1:23:48Speaker 9: Jim, you'll find that chart down in my cabin.
- 1:23:50Speaker 11: Take it.
- 1:23:51Speaker 9: Put some crosses on it. Put them anywhere. Understand?
- 1:23:55Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 1:23:56Speaker 9: Then bring it up here and slip it into the
- 1:23:58Speaker 9: Squire's hand. Hurry.
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: Jim rushes out.
- 1:24:02Speaker 7: I believe the lad has sold it.
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: Captain turns to Dr. Livesy and Squire.
- 1:24:07Speaker 9: Now, in case this comes to an issue, are you
- 1:24:11Speaker 9: gentlemen willing to fight them?
- 1:24:13Speaker 11: To the last, sir.
- 1:24:14Speaker 8: Aye, sir.
- 1:24:15Speaker 9: Very well. Have your pistols primed.
- 1:24:18Speaker 8: They are, sir.
- 1:24:19Speaker 7: And mine, sir.
- 1:24:21Speaker 9: Joyce, as soon as those men come from below, take
- 1:24:25Speaker 9: all the muskets and load them. Drag as much powder
- 1:24:28Speaker 9: and shot into the cabin as you can.
- 1:24:30Speaker 10: Very well, sir.
- 1:24:31Speaker 9: Stand there, on guard. Let no one touch it. right
- 1:24:35Speaker 9: sir if it comes to a fight we'll fight back
- 1:24:38Speaker 9: to the cabin and the ammunition we've got a chance
- 1:24:42Speaker 9: gentlemen just a bare chance and if we don't make
- 1:24:45Speaker 9: it we'll sell our lives dear steady now steady all.
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: The pirates led by silver come forward in an angry
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: group silver however is apparently trying to cover his face somewhat.
- 1:24:59Speaker 9: Well my men this looks like a deputation It is, sir,
- 1:25:04Speaker 9: a deputation. Well, what is it?
- 1:25:06Speaker 13: These men, sir. These men, sir, have been hearing rumors.
- 1:25:10Speaker 11: Rumors?
- 1:25:11Speaker 13: Rumors, sir, as how this ship was under sealed orders.
- 1:25:14Speaker 13: And them sealed orders are treasure, sir.
- 1:25:16Speaker 8: Aye, aye, aye.
- 1:25:18Speaker 4: Treasure.
- 1:25:19Speaker 8: And who told you that?
- 1:25:21Speaker 13: You did, sir. I? I, sir. Now such things getting
- 1:25:26Speaker 13: to the ears of the men makes them sort of greedy.
- 1:25:28Speaker 9: Sir, and— Do you mean to say that this is mutiny?
- 1:25:31Speaker 13: You can call it what you want, sir.
- 1:25:33Speaker 9: Why, damme, I'll have you put in irons.
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: I'll— Silver, as the men with ugly threats go toward Smollett,
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: speaks to Squire.
- 1:25:42Speaker 13: I think you'd better know, sir. I've counseled peace and
- 1:25:45Speaker 13: fair terms.
- 1:25:46Speaker 5: Well?
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: Silver to Squire always.
- 1:25:50Speaker 13: We are told that you have a certain chart.
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: The crew draws nearer in a threatening manner.
- 1:25:55Speaker 13: With certain crosses on it. We want that chart.
- 1:25:58Speaker 8: Silver, I trusted you.
- 1:26:01Speaker 13: The chart, sir. Do we get it?
- 1:26:03Speaker 8: Do we?
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: Smollett, as Squire goes to answer.
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: Wait.
- 1:26:08Speaker 9: Suppose we give this chart to you. What then?
- 1:26:12Speaker 13: What then?
- 1:26:14Speaker 9: Aye, what then? What happens to us?
- 1:26:16Speaker 15: Why?
- 1:26:17Speaker 13: Why nothing, sir.
- 1:26:19Speaker 9: You mean you'll not harm us? No. Your solemn promise?
- 1:26:24Speaker 13: Solemn promise.
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: Smollett, to the men.
- 1:26:27Speaker 9: You, you men, you hear? You give your word too?
- 1:26:32Speaker 9: cries of aye aye very well then much as i
- 1:26:36Speaker 9: think you are a pack of scoundrels and hope to
- 1:26:40Speaker 9: see you all hanged.
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: The men come threateningly at him.
- 1:26:44Speaker 9: Why i know when i'm beaten squire get the chart
- 1:26:49Speaker 9: very well.
- 1:26:50Speaker 13: Silver as squire starts out wait i'll send a man with.
- 1:26:54Speaker 8: You no need jim yes sir you know where that
- 1:26:59Speaker 8: chart is jim yes sir Bring it here.
- 1:27:02Speaker 4: In a jiffy, sir.
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: Silver, as the men press forward.
- 1:27:08Speaker 13: Now then, ready with the boats, men. Quick, get them ready.
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: As men get to work, lowering the boats.
- 1:27:13Speaker 13: I'll stand guard and watch, for I tell you I
- 1:27:15Speaker 13: can't trust you, Captain Smollett.
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: Smollett, down left.
- 1:27:19Speaker 9: Well, I can't say as I trust you either, Silver.
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: As Jim comes in with chart, Silver rushes forward.
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: Wait.
- 1:27:27Speaker 9: Remember your promise.
- 1:27:29Speaker 5: Aye.
- 1:27:30Speaker 9: Then let them have it, Jim.
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: As Jim gives Silver the map, all the men with
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: a cry spring forward. Now then, pals, settle with them.
- 1:27:40Speaker 4: Back!
- 1:27:41Speaker 5: Back!
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: Squire and Dr. Livesy and Smollett all draw their guns.
- 1:27:47Speaker 11: Your promise!
- 1:27:48Speaker 9: By heavens, gentlemen, if you come a step further!
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: Silver turns to the men.
- 1:27:54Speaker 13: Stop!
- 1:27:54Speaker 9: Stop, I say!
- 1:27:54Speaker 13: You fools, you blockheads!
- 1:27:57Speaker 20: Well, haven't we got the chart?
- 1:27:59Speaker 13: That was Flint's crew. I've seen Flint's ship of muck
- 1:28:02Speaker 13: with blood and fit to sink with gold. Aye, gold
- 1:28:04Speaker 13: that's buried there, gold that's ours by rights, belongs to
- 1:28:07Speaker 13: us who have sailed with Flint. Flint was captain. You
- 1:28:09Speaker 13: may as well know. I was quartermaster.
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: As he sees the men again threatening, he goes closer
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: to Smollett and speaks low.
- 1:28:17Speaker 13: They're rough lot there. It's all I can do to
- 1:28:19Speaker 13: hold them. You'd better go below.
- 1:28:20Speaker 4: Quick.
- 1:28:21Speaker 5: Go.
- 1:28:21Speaker 9: I warn you.
- 1:28:23Speaker 8: Go.
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: As soon as Smollett and Squire and Doctor go— the
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: men all make a dash as if they would follow them.
- 1:28:31Speaker 3: Now then, men, after them, we'll finish this up.
- 1:28:34Speaker 11: Wait.
- 1:28:35Speaker 3: Haven't we got the chart, haven't we?
- 1:28:37Speaker 13: Yes, and we got it too easy.
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: Too easy?
- 1:28:40Speaker 13: It don't look natural there's something behind it.
- 1:28:43Speaker 6: A trick maybe a wrong chart.
- 1:28:45Speaker 3: Then we'll find out soon enough come lads.
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: Come starts right all jim stepping forward left wait the
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: men surprised stop it.
- 1:28:57Speaker 4: Was the chart i got from billy bones I brought
- 1:29:00Speaker 4: it from the captain's cabin. I ought to know whether
- 1:29:02Speaker 4: it's the right one. You go down there and attack
- 1:29:04Speaker 4: and you'll lose everything. They're waiting for you. They're muskets
- 1:29:07Speaker 4: and pistols primed. They've got all the guns and ammunition.
- 1:29:10Speaker 4: You go and you'll lose your ship, your chart, and
- 1:29:12Speaker 4: your lives.
- 1:29:13Speaker 13: You say this is the right chart? We'll let you
- 1:29:15Speaker 13: risk your life on it. I mean, we'll take you
- 1:29:17Speaker 13: along as a hostage.
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: As Jim starts.
- 1:29:21Speaker 13: That makes a start, eh?
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: Recovering himself.
- 1:29:24Speaker 4: I'm willing to go.
- 1:29:25Speaker 13: All right, we'll see.
- 1:29:27Speaker 15: Hands.
- 1:29:28Speaker 2: Aye, aye, sir.
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: Hands and O'Brien come forward.
- 1:29:32Speaker 13: Hands, you and O'Brien stay here to watch the ship.
- 1:29:35Speaker 13: First sign of anything, you fire and tell the squire
- 1:29:37Speaker 13: from me that shot from this boat will be a
- 1:29:39Speaker 13: signal for Hawkins' death.
- 1:29:40Speaker 4: And tell the squire from me that Jim Hawkins isn't afraid.
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: In with him.
- 1:29:44Speaker 13: Toss him in.
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: As they toss him in.
- 1:29:47Speaker 13: Now then, over with you all.
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: As the men scramble on the boats.
- 1:29:51Speaker 13: Push them off.
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: Gets over the side and can be heard calling.
- 1:29:55Speaker 13: Away with them.
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: There are shouts and cries as the men push off.
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: Hands and O'Brien crowd the rail, staring after the boats.
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: Then slowly and cautiously, with muskets raised, there come upon
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: the deck Squire, Smollett, Dr. Livesy, Red Ruth, Hunter, and
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: Joyce and Gray. When Hands and O'Brien turn, they confront
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: the muskets.
- 1:30:19Speaker 9: Up with your hands!
- 1:30:20Speaker 4: Up with them!
- 1:30:22Speaker 5: What's this?
- 1:30:23Speaker 9: Joyce, take away their guns!
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: Joyce, going to men and taking guns.
- 1:30:28Speaker 16: Right, sir.
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: Hands, starting to lower his hands.
- 1:30:32Speaker 5: But.
- 1:30:34Speaker 9: Up with them, I say.
- 1:30:35Speaker 18: Now I warn you, you fire, you just fire one shot,
- 1:30:39Speaker 18: and it means the death of Hawkins.
- 1:30:41Speaker 7: What's that?
- 1:30:43Speaker 15: They've taken him with them.
- 1:30:45Speaker 18: I was to tell you that the first shot from
- 1:30:47Speaker 18: this boat is a signal for death.
- 1:30:50Speaker 5: What?
- 1:30:52Speaker 9: Come, Livesey, to the boat.
- 1:30:54Speaker 15: Where are you going?
- 1:30:55Speaker 5: Going.
- 1:30:56Speaker 9: By all the stars, we're going to rescue that boy.
- 1:30:59Speaker 9: You men did just what we wanted you to. We've
- 1:31:02Speaker 9: tricked you, and we're going to fight you to the end.
- 1:31:05Speaker 9: And I tell you this much, and you can tell Silver.
- 1:31:08Speaker 9: God help you all if anything happens to that boy.
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: Curtain. End of Act Two.
- 1:31:27Speaker 3: ACT III.
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: SCENE I. IN FRONT OF BEN GUNN'S CAVE. When the
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: curtain rises, the stage is in darkness, the darkness just
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: before dawn. Then gradually the light comes stealing in, turning
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: the black to grey, and until this melts into tones
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: of early dawn, the whole reaching a sort of climactic
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: effulgence with the rise of the sun. Birds and morning
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: fowl are heard in the trees, the whistle of insects,
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: which always ushers in dawn, the call of here and
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: there an animal. There is no sign of anything human,
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: the whole atmosphere of the scene suggesting a place in
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: its primal beauty. Then suddenly— When the sun has fully
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: risen above the horizon, from the side of the hill
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: which was here, steep and stony, a spout of gravel
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: is dislodged and falls rattling and bounding through the trees.
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: The next instant comes half creeping, half sliding from his cave,
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: Ben Gunn, almost cannibal-like. He looks about hurriedly, and then, reassured,
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: crawls up to a crevice in the rocks from which
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: there trickles a small stream of water. lying full length
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: upon the ground, drinks. Then of a sudden he starts
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: as if he heard something. Again reassured, he again stoops
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: to drink. But this time he arises hurriedly and with
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: more decision. He goes quickly to the left and peers
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: through the trees. Apparently seeing no one, he goes to
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: the right and searches there. Then suddenly, with a half-smothered cry,
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: he turns, runs up back and hides. Jim enters almost
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: at once. For a moment he looks about wonderingly. He
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: seems weary and tired, and he is about to go
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: on when suddenly he catches sight of Ben Gunn hiding.
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: All alert now, he stops. My eyes turned instinctively in
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: that direction, and I saw a figure leap with great
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: rapidity behind the trunk of a pine. What it was,
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: whether a bear or man or monkey, I could in
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: no wise tell. It seemed dark and shaggy. More I
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: knew not. But the terror of this new apparition brought
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: me to a stand. I was now, it seemed, cut
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: off upon both sides. Behind me the murderers, before me
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: this lurking nondescript, and immediately I began to prefer the
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: dangers I knew to those I knew not. Silver himself
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: appeared less terrible in contrast with this creature of the
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: woods— the and I turned upon my heel, looking sharply behind
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: me over my shoulder, and began to retrace my steps
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: in the direction of the boats. Instinctively the figure reappeared, and,
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: making a wide circle, began to head me off. I
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: was tired, I was tired at any rate, but had
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: I been as fresh as when I arose, I could
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: see it was in vain for me to contend in
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: speed with such an adversary. From trunk to trunk the
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: creature flitted like a deer, running manlike on two legs,
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: but unlike any man I had ever seen, stooping almost
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: double as it ran. Yet a man it was! I
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: could no longer be in doubt about that. I began
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: to recall what I had heard of cannibals. I was
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: within an ace of calling for help, but the mere
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: fact that he was a man, however wild, had somewhat
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: reassured me. and my fear of silver began to revive
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: in proportion. I stood still, therefore, and cast about for
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: some method of escape. And as I was so thinking,
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: the recollection of my pistol flashed into my mind. As
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: soon as I remembered I was not defenseless, courage glowed
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: again in my heart, and I set my face resolutely
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: for this man of the island, and walked briskly toward him.
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: He was concealed by this time behind another tree-trunk, but
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: he must have been watching me closely, for as soon
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: as I began to move in his direction, he reappeared
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: and took a step to meet me. Then he hesitated,
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: drew back, came forward again, and at last, to my
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: wonder and confusion, threw himself on his knees and held
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: out his clasped hands in supplication. Jim, who are you?
- 1:36:05Speaker 5: Ben Gunn. I am poor Ben Gunn I am. And
- 1:36:09Speaker 5: I haven't spoken with a Christian these three years.
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: Three years?
- 1:36:15Speaker 5: Aye, three blessed years.
- 1:36:18Speaker 4: Shipwrecked here?
- 1:36:19Speaker 5: Nay, mate, marooned.
- 1:36:23Speaker 4: Marooned? You mean put here purposely and left alone to
- 1:36:27Speaker 4: live or die?
- 1:36:27Speaker 5: Aye, mate, marooned. Three years ago and lived on goats
- 1:36:34Speaker 5: since then and berries and oysters. Wherever man is, as I,
- 1:36:40Speaker 5: man can do for his self. But my heart is
- 1:36:45Speaker 5: more for Christian diet.
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: Confidentially stepped to Jim.
- 1:36:51Speaker 5: Now, you mightn't have a piece of cheese about you, eh?
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: Jim shakes head.
- 1:36:58Speaker 11: No.
- 1:37:00Speaker 5: Well, many's the long night I've dreamed of cheese. Toasted.
- 1:37:08Speaker 5: I will sleep and wake up again, and here I were.
- 1:37:14Speaker 4: If I get on board again, you shall have it
- 1:37:15Speaker 4: by the ton.
- 1:37:17Speaker 5: If ever you get on board again, says you.
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: Looking towards C.
- 1:37:22Speaker 8: Yes.
- 1:37:23Speaker 5: Why, now, who's turned to you?
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: Jim, noticing Gunn's manner and putting on a show of bravery.
- 1:37:29Speaker 10: Not you, I know.
- 1:37:30Speaker 5: Right you was. Now you, what do you call yourself, mate?
- 1:37:36Speaker 4: Jim.
- 1:37:37Speaker 5: Jim?
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: Jim suddenly takes hold of Jim's clothing as Jim draws back,
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: half afraid.
- 1:37:44Speaker 5: Oh, there, there. Now, don't you be afraid of being done.
- 1:37:49Speaker 4: I'm not afraid.
- 1:37:50Speaker 5: That's right. I've lived that rough. You'd be ashamed to hear.
- 1:37:56Speaker 5: Just look at these.
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: Indicates his clothing.
- 1:38:00Speaker 5: Rags, tatters, pieces of old ship's canvas and bits of
- 1:38:06Speaker 5: old sea cloth. all held together with brass buttons and
- 1:38:10Speaker 5: bits of stick and loops of terry gaskin. Now, you
- 1:38:16Speaker 5: look at me, you'd never think I had a pious mother,
- 1:38:20Speaker 5: would you now?
- 1:38:21Speaker 4: Why, no, not particularly.
- 1:38:25Speaker 5: Well, I had. Remarkable pious. And I was a civil
- 1:38:30Speaker 5: pious boy and could rattle off my catechism that fast
- 1:38:35Speaker 5: as you couldn't tell one word from another fact and
- 1:38:40Speaker 5: here's what it came to.
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: Jim points about the island and.
- 1:38:44Speaker 5: It began with chuck feathered in a cemetery on the
- 1:38:48Speaker 5: blessed gravestones. That's what it begun with, but it went
- 1:38:54Speaker 5: farther than that. So my mother told me and predicted
- 1:38:59Speaker 5: the whole she did, the pious woman.
- 1:39:02Speaker 4: But how did you get here?
- 1:39:04Speaker 5: It were Providence that put me here. I've thought it
- 1:39:09Speaker 5: all out on this here lonely island, and I'm back
- 1:39:12Speaker 5: on piety. You don't catch me tasting rum so much,
- 1:39:18Speaker 5: but Just a dimple of luck, of course. First chance
- 1:39:23Speaker 5: I get. I'm bound I'll be good, and.
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: Takes him by the arm.
- 1:39:30Speaker 5: I see the way to.
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: Confidentially and looking about.
- 1:39:35Speaker 5: Jim, I'm rich.
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: Jim, starting and trying to draw away.
- 1:39:44Speaker 4: Rich, you, why... Rich.
- 1:39:48Speaker 5: Rich, I says. But— And I'll tell you what. I'll
- 1:39:52Speaker 5: make a man of you, Jim. You'll bless your stars,
- 1:39:57Speaker 5: you will. You was the first that found me.
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: And— Suddenly, with great change and intensity.
- 1:40:04Speaker 5: Now, Jim, you tell me true.
- 1:40:08Speaker 4: Tell you what?
- 1:40:09Speaker 5: That ain't Flint's ship out there. It ain't.
- 1:40:14Speaker 4: No, and Flint is dead.
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: With evident relief— Ah.
- 1:40:20Speaker 4: But I'll tell you true as you ask me. There
- 1:40:22Speaker 4: are some of Flint's hands aboard. Worst luck for the
- 1:40:24Speaker 4: rest of us.
- 1:40:25Speaker 5: Not a man with one leg?
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: Silver?
- 1:40:31Speaker 5: Aye, Silver.
- 1:40:34Speaker 4: He's cook and ringleader, too.
- 1:40:36Speaker 5: If you was sent by Long John, I'm as good
- 1:40:40Speaker 5: as pork, and I know it.
- 1:40:43Speaker 4: I'm not sent by Silver.
- 1:40:45Speaker 5: Now tell me true, Jim. You tell me true.
- 1:40:50Speaker 4: I'm running from him. He and his hands mutinied on us.
- 1:40:53Speaker 5: On who, mate?
- 1:40:55Speaker 4: Squire Trelawney and Captain Smollett and Dr. Livesey.
- 1:40:59Speaker 5: Mutinied, you say, Jim?
- 1:41:02Speaker 4: Yes. We had come on that ship to look for
- 1:41:04Speaker 4: Flint's treasure.
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: Huh?
- 1:41:08Speaker 4: We had Flint's map.
- 1:41:10Speaker 5: Flint's best? And where did you get that?
- 1:41:15Speaker 4: I got it from Bill Bones when he died.
- 1:41:18Speaker 5: Billy Bones dead too?
- 1:41:21Speaker 4: I gave it to the squire. Somehow Silver got wind
- 1:41:23Speaker 4: of it. He managed to deceive the squire by appearing
- 1:41:26Speaker 4: kindly and.
- 1:41:28Speaker 19: Aye, that would be Silver's way. There was Flint. Barring rum,
- 1:41:34Speaker 19: his match was never seen. He were afraid of none,
- 1:41:39Speaker 19: not he.
- 1:41:40Speaker 5: On his silver... Silver, was that genteel?
- 1:41:46Speaker 4: Well, last night they made a demand for the map.
- 1:41:48Speaker 4: The squire was in a hard way and gave it
- 1:41:50Speaker 4: to them.
- 1:41:51Speaker 5: Flint's Fist?
- 1:41:53Speaker 4: No, a false map.
- 1:41:55Speaker 5: Oh, not the right one.
- 1:41:59Speaker 4: No, but I think Silver suspected. He made me come
- 1:42:02Speaker 4: along with them. As soon as the boats grounded, I jumped.
- 1:42:05Speaker 4: Then I ran with all my might through the woods.
- 1:42:07Speaker 4: All night I wandered about, until I found you. And now, sir,
- 1:42:11Speaker 4: since I've told you, won't you help me get back
- 1:42:13Speaker 4: to my friends? Won't you please?
- 1:42:15Speaker 5: So your squire gave him a false map and kept
- 1:42:21Speaker 5: the real one?
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: Sits on rock.
- 1:42:24Speaker 5: Yes. That's a good night.
- 1:42:31Speaker 4: What is it?
- 1:42:32Speaker 5: You're all in a clove hitch, ain't you? All in
- 1:42:36Speaker 5: a clove hitch.
- 1:42:38Speaker 4: You will help me, won't you?
- 1:42:40Speaker 5: You just put your trust in Ben Gunn. Ben Gunn's
- 1:42:46Speaker 5: the man to do it.
- 1:42:48Speaker 4: Then you'll send me back?
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: Gunn beckons Jim. Jim sits right of Gunn.
- 1:42:54Speaker 5: Would you think it likely now your squire would prove
- 1:42:58Speaker 5: liberally minded in case of help in being in a
- 1:43:03Speaker 5: clove hitch?
- 1:43:05Speaker 4: Oh, I'm sure he would.
- 1:43:07Speaker 5: Aye, but you see, I didn't mean giving me a
- 1:43:10Speaker 5: gate to keep and a suit of livery clothes and such.
- 1:43:15Speaker 5: That's not my mark, Jim.
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: As Jim starts to reply.
- 1:43:20Speaker 5: What I mean is, would he likely come down to
- 1:43:24Speaker 5: the tune of, say, one thousand pounds out of money
- 1:43:30Speaker 5: that's as good as a man's own already?
- 1:43:33Speaker 4: You can count on it. All the hands were to share.
- 1:43:36Speaker 5: And a passage home? And a passage home?
- 1:43:40Speaker 4: The squire's a gentleman.
- 1:43:41Speaker 5: A gentleman born, not a gentleman of fortune, eh, Jim?
- 1:43:49Speaker 11: Of course.
- 1:43:50Speaker 4: Besides, if we get rid of the others, we should
- 1:43:51Speaker 4: want you to help work the vessel home.
- 1:43:54Speaker 5: Aye, so you would.
- 1:43:56Speaker 4: And now will you tell me how to get back
- 1:43:58Speaker 4: to my friends, will you?
- 1:44:00Speaker 5: So much I'll tell you, and no more.
- 1:44:04Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 1:44:05Speaker 5: I were in Flint's ship when he buried the treasure.
- 1:44:10Speaker 4: You?
- 1:44:10Speaker 5: He and six along, six strong seamen. There was a
- 1:44:16Speaker 5: shore nigh on a week, and us waiting in the
- 1:44:19Speaker 5: bay at the old walrus. One day up went the signal,
- 1:44:25Speaker 5: and here come Flint, his head done up in a
- 1:44:28Speaker 5: blue scarf, in a little boat, and all by himself.
- 1:44:35Speaker 4: By himself. But the others?
- 1:44:37Speaker 5: The sun was up, and mortal white he looked about
- 1:44:41Speaker 5: the cut water. But there he was, you mind, and
- 1:44:45Speaker 5: the six all dead. Dead and buried. How he done it,
- 1:44:52Speaker 5: not a man of borders could make out. It was battle, murder,
- 1:44:58Speaker 5: and sudden death. Him against six.
- 1:45:02Speaker 4: He killed them all?
- 1:45:05Speaker 5: Aye, Billy Bones was mate. Long John, he were quartermaster.
- 1:45:12Speaker 5: And they asked him where the treasure was. Ah, says he,
- 1:45:18Speaker 5: you can go ashore if you like and stay. But
- 1:45:23Speaker 5: as for the ship, she'll beat up for more by thunder.
- 1:45:27Speaker 5: That's what he said.
- 1:45:30Speaker 4: But then how, how did you come here?
- 1:45:34Speaker 5: I was in another ship three years back, and we
- 1:45:38Speaker 5: sighted this island. Boys, said I, here's Flint's treasure. Let's
- 1:45:44Speaker 5: land and find it. The captain was displeased at that,
- 1:45:49Speaker 5: but my messmates were all of one mind. Twelve days
- 1:45:54Speaker 5: they looked for it, and every day they had a
- 1:45:57Speaker 5: worse word for me until one fine morning... All hands
- 1:46:03Speaker 5: went aboard. As for you, Benjamin Gunn, says he, here's
- 1:46:10Speaker 5: a musket, they says, and a spade and a pickaxe.
- 1:46:16Speaker 5: You stay here and find Flint's money for yourself, they says.
- 1:46:21Speaker 4: Marooned you?
- 1:46:23Speaker 5: Well, Jim, three years I've been here and not a
- 1:46:27Speaker 5: bite of Christian diet from that day to this. But now,
- 1:46:33Speaker 5: look here. Look at me.
- 1:46:36Speaker 4: Well?
- 1:46:37Speaker 5: Do I look like a man before the mast? Do I?
- 1:46:44Speaker 6: No.
- 1:46:44Speaker 5: No, says you. No, I weren't. Neither, says I.
- 1:46:50Speaker 4: But then.
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: Just.
- 1:46:52Speaker 5: You mention them words to your squire.
- 1:46:56Speaker 2: No, he weren't.
- 1:46:57Speaker 5: Neither. That's the word.
- 1:47:00Speaker 4: But I don't understand.
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: With more and more significance.
- 1:47:04Speaker 5: Three years I was a man of this island, light
- 1:47:09Speaker 5: and dark, fair and rain, and sometimes I would maybe
- 1:47:15Speaker 5: think upon a prayer, says you, and sometimes I would
- 1:47:21Speaker 5: maybe think of my old mother, so be as she's alive,
- 1:47:27Speaker 5: you'll say. But the most part of Gunn's time, this
- 1:47:33Speaker 5: is what you'll say, the most part of his time
- 1:47:37Speaker 5: was took up with another matter. And then you'll give
- 1:47:42Speaker 5: him a nip like I do.
- 1:47:48Speaker 4: What do you mean?
- 1:47:48Speaker 5: Then you're up and you'll say this. Gunn's a good man,
- 1:47:54Speaker 5: you'll say. And he puts a precious sight more confidence.
- 1:47:59Speaker 5: a precious sight mind ye for a gentleman born than
- 1:48:04Speaker 5: in his gentleman of fortune having been one himself.
- 1:48:12Speaker 4: I don't understand a word you're saying but how on
- 1:48:14Speaker 4: earth am i to tell these things to the squire
- 1:48:16Speaker 4: if i can't get.
- 1:48:17Speaker 5: Aboard Ah, there's the hitch for sure.
- 1:48:22Speaker 4: Can't you help me some way, can't you?
- 1:48:23Speaker 5: Aye, lad, you put your trust in Ben Gunn.
- 1:48:29Speaker 4: Then will you? Will you help me?
- 1:48:31Speaker 5: Aye.
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: Crosses to boat, right center up. Points to his boat.
- 1:48:37Speaker 5: Here's my boat. I made it with my own two hands.
- 1:48:42Speaker 4: You'll let me take it?
- 1:48:43Speaker 5: Aye, lad, you may take it.
- 1:48:47Speaker 4: And you'll come too. You'll help me reach the boat?
- 1:48:50Speaker 5: Nay, lad, not been done. But you can have the coracle.
- 1:48:56Speaker 4: Then I'll go alone. Here, help me launch it.
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: As he starts to push out the boat, there is
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: heard a salvo of shots.
- 1:49:03Speaker 4: What was that?
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: Crosses to rock center.
- 1:49:07Speaker 2: Shots?
- 1:49:09Speaker 4: Then they've begun the fight already. What shall I do now?
- 1:49:11Speaker 15: Wait.
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: Crawls up the side of rock and peers anxiously in
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: the distance.
- 1:49:17Speaker 5: That wasn't from the boat.
- 1:49:20Speaker 4: Where then?
- 1:49:21Speaker 11: Up on rock.
- 1:49:22Speaker 2: Wait.
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: Suddenly he utters a cry.
- 1:49:25Speaker 13: What is it?
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: Excitedly looks off right.
- 1:49:28Speaker 5: Oh, look. Look. There. What do you see?
- 1:49:34Speaker 4: The Union Jack.
- 1:49:35Speaker 5: Aye, lad. The Union Jack. flying over the old stockade
- 1:49:41Speaker 5: as was made years and years ago, my friend. There
- 1:49:46Speaker 5: are your friends, Jim.
- 1:49:48Speaker 4: More like they're mutineers.
- 1:49:51Speaker 5: Now, Silver would fly the Jolly Roger, you don't make
- 1:49:56Speaker 5: no doubt of that. No, that's your friends. There's been blows,
- 1:50:03Speaker 5: and I reckon your friend has had the best of it.
- 1:50:06Speaker 4: Then come, come quick.
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: Down from rock to center. Ben follows, holding Jim back.
- 1:50:13Speaker 5: Nay, mate, Ben gun is fly. Rum wouldn't bring me
- 1:50:18Speaker 5: there where you're going. Not rum wouldn't, till I see
- 1:50:23Speaker 5: you born gentleman and gets it on his word of honor.
- 1:50:28Speaker 4: Then let me go.
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: Still holding Jim.
- 1:50:31Speaker 5: You won't forget my words.
- 1:50:33Speaker 9: No, no.
- 1:50:35Speaker 5: A precious sight. That's what she'll say. A precious sight,
- 1:50:41Speaker 5: more confidence. And then nips him, eh?
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: Jim, always trying to get away.
- 1:50:48Speaker 4: Yes, yes.
- 1:50:50Speaker 5: And when Ben Gunn's wanted, you know where to find him, Jim?
- 1:50:55Speaker 4: No, where?
- 1:50:57Speaker 5: Just where you found him today. And him that comes
- 1:51:01Speaker 5: is to have a white thing in his hand. And
- 1:51:04Speaker 5: he's to come alone. You.
- 1:51:07Speaker 4: understand eh yes i think so you have something to
- 1:51:12Speaker 4: propose when you wish to see the squire or the
- 1:51:14Speaker 4: doctor here is that it.
- 1:51:16Speaker 5: And when says you why from noon observation to about.
- 1:51:23Speaker 4: Six bells good now may i go you.
- 1:51:27Speaker 5: Won't forget no no precious sight and reasons of his
- 1:51:33Speaker 5: own says you reasons of his own That's the mainstay.
- 1:51:39Speaker 3: Yes, yes.
- 1:51:40Speaker 4: Now, please, please.
- 1:51:42Speaker 5: And, Jim, if you was to see Silver, you wouldn't
- 1:51:47Speaker 5: go to sell Ben Gunn, while the horses wouldn't draw
- 1:51:53Speaker 5: it from you.
- 1:51:54Speaker 4: No, no, I swear it.
- 1:51:57Speaker 5: Well, then, I reckon you can go.
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: Let's him go, and Jim darts away. Gunn calls after him.
- 1:52:04Speaker 5: Remember, Precious sight and reasons of his own.
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: Turns to his own cave.
- 1:52:13Speaker 5: If them pirates camp ashore, there'll be widows in the morning.
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: Curtain. Act 3, Scene 2. The Stockade. Upon three sides,
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: wherever visible, high walls of rude planks, spike-shaped at top.
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: At center and back, the front of a log house,
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: with porch and door. Back of house, tall, large trees.
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: At left, too, a wooden gate with wooden bar to
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: fasten it. At several places about the walls, peak holes
- 1:52:50Speaker 1: and gun rests. At center of stage, a sawed-off log
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: which serves as a table, with other smaller logs which
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: are used as seats. The floor is covered with sand.
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: When curtain goes up, Gray, Hunter, Red Ruth, Joyce, are
- 1:53:06Speaker 1: stationed at different sides, each with gun to his shoulder,
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: and each peering through a peek-hole. On the table in
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: the center stands Captain Smollett, an old-fashioned spy-glass to his eye.
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: Beside him stand Dr. Livesy and the Squire. Before the
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: curtain rises, there is heard the report of a cannon,
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: fired at intervals. When the curtain rises, reports continue.
- 1:53:31Speaker 9: Blaze away, blaze away. That's right. You've little enough powder left.
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: Squire draws Dr. Livesy aside.
- 1:53:39Speaker 8: We're beaten, Doctor. They have us here like rats in
- 1:53:42Speaker 8: a trap.
- 1:53:44Speaker 7: And Hawkins, the lad, was like one of my own.
- 1:53:47Speaker 8: They've got us. We've got to give in, Captain Smollett.
- 1:53:51Speaker 8: We've come to an end.
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: Captain drops glass, surprised.
- 1:53:55Speaker 9: What's that?
- 1:53:57Speaker 8: I am responsible for these men here. I can't see
- 1:53:59Speaker 8: them murdered. I'm willing to do anything.
- 1:54:02Speaker 9: Well, I'm not, and I don't think these men are either.
- 1:54:06Speaker 8: What's that?
- 1:54:07Speaker 9: My lads, you heard what the squire said. Now then,
- 1:54:10Speaker 9: what do you say? Shall we give up, or stand
- 1:54:14Speaker 9: here and fight like Englishmen? Fight to the end, sir.
- 1:54:17Speaker 9: You see, I knew I could count on him. And
- 1:54:20Speaker 9: now I tell you, we are not beaten yet. There's
- 1:54:23Speaker 9: still a chance. For the last half hour I've looked
- 1:54:27Speaker 9: at that ship, and only two have I seen aboard her. Well,
- 1:54:32Speaker 9: as soon as it grows dark, one or two of
- 1:54:34Speaker 9: us will creep down to the beach. Row out and
- 1:54:38Speaker 9: cut that ship adrift.
- 1:54:40Speaker 7: Yes, but how about the rest of that crew of pirates?
- 1:54:43Speaker 7: Not a sound have we heard from them the last hour.
- 1:54:46Speaker 9: That's what I mean to find out. I must know
- 1:54:49Speaker 9: at once where the enemy is and what he is planning.
- 1:54:53Speaker 9: In short, I need volunteers to reconnoiter.
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: Gray and Hunter step up at once.
- 1:54:58Speaker 9: We'll go, sir.
- 1:55:00Speaker 8: Wait. Before you offer, I want you to know the risk.
- 1:55:03Speaker 8: It's life or death.
- 1:55:05Speaker 2: We're ready, sir.
- 1:55:06Speaker 9: Keep to the left, and undercover as much as possible.
- 1:55:10Speaker 9: Try for the woods.
- 1:55:11Speaker 8: Right, sir.
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: All clear, Joyce?
- 1:55:16Speaker 8: Yes, sir.
- 1:55:18Speaker 9: Off with you, then.
- 1:55:18Speaker 1: If you men succeed, we'll owe you our lives.
- 1:55:21Speaker 8: I'll remember it. Careful now.
- 1:55:30Speaker 9: I tell you, if we can do this, we'll turn
- 1:55:31Speaker 9: a trick on them.
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: Another cannon shot booms out.
- 1:55:35Speaker 8: Captain, it seems to me it's our flag they're aiming at.
- 1:55:39Speaker 8: Wouldn't it be wiser to take it in?
- 1:55:41Speaker 9: Strike my colors? No, sir, not I.
- 1:55:45Speaker 8: We shall have to do it sooner or later. We're
- 1:55:47Speaker 8: outnumbered three to one, beaten in every way. I'm willing
- 1:55:51Speaker 8: to give them that chart if they'll return young Hawkins
- 1:55:54Speaker 8: to us and let us go.
- 1:55:55Speaker 7: And I, Captain Smollett, I'd see the whole treasure in
- 1:55:58Speaker 7: Davy Jones' locker rather than any harm should come to Jim.
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: Several pistol shots ring out. There is a cry and
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: a call.
- 1:56:06Speaker 10: Hunter and Gray, sir.
- 1:56:07Speaker 5: What?
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: Squire, who has rushed up excitedly.
- 1:56:11Speaker 8: Hunter's wounded.
- 1:56:12Speaker 9: The gates! Quick!
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: They open the gates. Exclamations ad lib. Hunter, supported by Gray, enters.
- 1:56:21Speaker 1: Hunter is badly wounded. The doctor immediately rushes to him.
- 1:56:25Speaker 1: Smollett speaks to Gray.
- 1:56:28Speaker 9: Well, well, they're all in the woods there, on every side.
- 1:56:32Speaker 8: I got one of them, I think.
- 1:56:34Speaker 9: In your places.
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: To Dr. Livesy, who is bending over Hunter.
- 1:56:38Speaker 9: Is he badly hurt, Dr.
- 1:56:39Speaker 2: Livesy?
- 1:56:40Speaker 5: Yes, very.
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: Hunter, as he takes the water.
- 1:56:45Speaker 2: Be I going, Doctor?
- 1:56:46Speaker 7: Tom, my man, you're going home.
- 1:56:49Speaker 2: I wish I had had a look at him first.
- 1:56:52Speaker 1: Squire bends over Tom. Tom.
- 1:56:55Speaker 8: Tom.
- 1:56:56Speaker 2: Yes, sir?
- 1:56:57Speaker 8: Say you forgive me, Tom, for bringing you along.
- 1:57:01Speaker 4: Would that be respectful, sir?
- 1:57:05Speaker 8: Aye, do, Tom.
- 1:57:07Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:57:08Speaker 11: Howsoever it be, so be it.
- 1:57:13Speaker 2: Amen.
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: Falls back.
- 1:57:16Speaker 7: Here, Gray, give me a hand. We'll carry him in.
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: Gray and Dr. Livesy carry in Hunter.
- 1:57:22Speaker 8: Then it's my fault. All my fault for bringing him.
- 1:57:26Speaker 9: No time for that now, sir. Those men out there
- 1:57:29Speaker 9: are planning an attack. That's it. Waiting to creep up
- 1:57:32Speaker 9: in the dusk.
- 1:57:34Speaker 8: All the better for us.
- 1:57:35Speaker 9: If we win, yes.
- 1:57:38Speaker 5: If not.
- 1:57:39Speaker 1: Grey and Dr. Livesy return. To Dr. Livesy.
- 1:57:43Speaker 5: Well?
- 1:57:44Speaker 7: He's gone, sir.
- 1:57:45Speaker 8: Poor lad. Poor lad.
- 1:57:48Speaker 5: Aye.
- 1:57:49Speaker 7: And how about the lad out there?
- 1:57:51Speaker 15: With them?
- 1:57:52Speaker 9: We'll know that very soon, or I miss my guess.
- 1:57:55Speaker 4: Ahoy!
- 1:57:57Speaker 9: Those blackguards out there will not catch us unprepared. We're
- 1:58:00Speaker 9: ready for them when they come.
- 1:58:02Speaker 4: Ahoy!
- 1:58:03Speaker 11: What's that?
- 1:58:04Speaker 2: Listen.
- 1:58:05Speaker 13: Log house, ahoy!
- 1:58:06Speaker 14: Log house, ahoy!
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: They all rush to the peak holes and peer out.
- 1:58:12Speaker 9: Silver, as I live.
- 1:58:14Speaker 7: With a flag of truth.
- 1:58:16Speaker 8: What do you suppose?
- 1:58:18Speaker 9: Some trick. They know we've discovered their presence.
- 1:58:21Speaker 1: Then turns to men.
- 1:58:22Speaker 9: All stand ready and watch.
- 1:58:24Speaker 1: The men take their places about the stockade and peer
- 1:58:27Speaker 1: out through the peak holes.
- 1:58:29Speaker 9: Gray, stand by those gates.
- 1:58:31Speaker 1: Gray takes his place at the gates.
- 1:58:33Speaker 9: Wait till I give the word.
- 1:58:35Speaker 13: Ahoy! Log-house, ahoy!
- 1:58:37Speaker 9: Who goes? Stand, or we fire.
- 1:58:40Speaker 13: Flag of truce.
- 1:58:42Speaker 9: What do you want with your flag of truce?
- 1:58:45Speaker 13: Captain Silver, come aboard to make terms.
- 1:58:48Speaker 9: What?
- 1:58:48Speaker 8: Easy.
- 1:58:51Speaker 9: It's a trick, I tell you. You come alone?'' Alone.
- 1:58:55Speaker 1: Dr. Lowe to Smollett as Gray opens the gates.
- 1:58:59Speaker 7: Find out about Hawkins, if you can. Agree to anything.
- 1:59:03Speaker 7: Make any terms so you can get the boy.
- 1:59:06Speaker 1: Smollett turns as Silver enters. Silver, as gates close behind him.
- 1:59:11Speaker 13: Flag of truce. You respect a flag of truce?
- 1:59:13Speaker 9: If there's any treachery, Silver, it will be on your side.
- 1:59:17Speaker 9: And the Lord help you.
- 1:59:19Speaker 13: That' s enough, Captain. A word from me's enough.' looks about
- 1:59:23Speaker 13: ah squire at the top of the morning to you
- 1:59:25Speaker 13: doctor here's my service.
- 1:59:26Speaker 9: If you have anything to say better say it.
- 1:59:29Speaker 13: Right you are captain smollett well then we're willing to
- 1:59:32Speaker 13: submit if we can come to terms and know bones.
- 1:59:33Speaker 9: About it what you wait what terms.
- 1:59:38Speaker 13: That was a good lay of yours, sending us on
- 1:59:40Speaker 13: that wild goose chase with that false chart. It was
- 1:59:42Speaker 13: a clever trick to get us out of the way
- 1:59:44Speaker 13: while you reached here.
- 1:59:45Speaker 5: Only.
- 1:59:46Speaker 9: Well?
- 1:59:46Speaker 13: Won't work twice. I suspected you even then, that's why
- 1:59:48Speaker 13: I took Hawkins. But now, here you are. And there's
- 1:59:51Speaker 13: your ship with the jolly Roger flying at her masthead.
- 1:59:53Speaker 13: You lost most of your provisions coming here, and I
- 1:59:55Speaker 13: know just about how much ammunition you got.
- 1:59:57Speaker 9: That's our affair.
- 1:59:59Speaker 13: And ours.
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: With sudden fierceness.
- 2:00:02Speaker 13: We got you, I tell you, and you've got to
- 2:00:04Speaker 13: do what I say. We want that treasure and we
- 2:00:05Speaker 13: want it now. That's our point.
- 2:00:07Speaker 9: Point enough.
- 2:00:09Speaker 13: You want your lives, and that's your point. Now you
- 2:00:11Speaker 13: give us that chart, and then either you come aboard
- 2:00:13Speaker 13: along with us once the treasure's shipped, and then I'll
- 2:00:15Speaker 13: give you my affidavit upon my word of honor to
- 2:00:17Speaker 13: clap you somewhere safe ashore.
- 2:00:19Speaker 1: Sarcastically.
- 2:00:20Speaker 9: Of course we can trust you to do that.
- 2:00:23Speaker 13: Well, then, if that ain't to your fancy, some of
- 2:00:25Speaker 13: my hands being rough, you can stay here and we'll
- 2:00:27Speaker 13: divide stores with you, and I give you my affidavit
- 2:00:29Speaker 13: as before to speak the first ship we sight and
- 2:00:31Speaker 13: send him here to pick you up. Now you'll own
- 2:00:33Speaker 13: that's talking.
- 2:00:34Speaker 1: Turns round to the men.
- 2:00:36Speaker 13: I hope all hands will overhaul my words, for what
- 2:00:38Speaker 13: is spoke to one is spoke to all.
- 2:00:40Speaker 9: And is that all?
- 2:00:42Speaker 13: Every last word by thunder. Refuse, and you've seen the
- 2:00:44Speaker 13: last of me but musket balls.
- 2:00:46Speaker 9: Then hear me. If you'll come, one by one, I'll
- 2:00:51Speaker 9: engage to clap you all in irons.
- 2:00:55Speaker 2: Oh.
- 2:00:55Speaker 9: And take you home for trial.
- 2:00:57Speaker 13: You will, will you?
- 2:00:59Speaker 9: You can't find that treasure without us. You can't work
- 2:01:02Speaker 9: that ship without us.
- 2:01:04Speaker 13: Look out, I warn you.
- 2:01:06Speaker 9: You need us more than we need you.
- 2:01:08Speaker 13: Oh, we do, do we? You wouldn't stand there and
- 2:01:11Speaker 13: defy me if we still had that boy. If Hawkins
- 2:01:13Speaker 13: hadn't got away, I'd have you on your knees fast enough.
- 2:01:15Speaker 7: Hawkins safe.
- 2:01:17Speaker 15: Thank God.
- 2:01:18Speaker 9: Now bundle out of this, double quick. I'll put a
- 2:01:21Speaker 9: bullet in your back when next we meet.
- 2:01:24Speaker 13: That's your last word?
- 2:01:26Speaker 8: It is.
- 2:01:27Speaker 13: All right, my men are waiting for me to give
- 2:01:28Speaker 13: the word. You'll hear from me in the next five minutes.
- 2:01:30Speaker 13: I'll stave your old blockhouse in like a rum punchin.
- 2:01:33Speaker 1: Smollett laughs derisively.
- 2:01:36Speaker 13: Laugh by thunder laugh. Before a quarter of an hour's out,
- 2:01:38Speaker 13: you'll laugh on that other side.
- 2:01:40Speaker 1: Turns and looks at the men.
- 2:01:42Speaker 13: And then the die'll be the lucky ones.
- 2:01:44Speaker 1: Stalks out. Gray closes the door behind him.
- 2:01:49Speaker 9: Now, lads, I've given Silver a broadside. Pitched it in red-hot,
- 2:01:54Speaker 9: on purpose. And before many minutes are out, as he said,
- 2:01:58Speaker 9: we'll be boarded. We're outnumbered. But we fight in shelter.
- 2:02:04Speaker 9: And I believe we can drop em'. That's why I
- 2:02:06Speaker 9: put it on so thick, to make them fight. We
- 2:02:09Speaker 9: can stand anything but what he threatened, a siege or
- 2:02:13Speaker 9: being marooned. So let them come, lads, let them come.
- 2:02:17Speaker 1: They all turn to get ready, most of them taking
- 2:02:20Speaker 1: off their coats.
- 2:02:21Speaker 9: Doctor, you take the rear there.
- 2:02:23Speaker 1: As he goes to his position in the back.
- 2:02:26Speaker 15: Aye, aye, sir.
- 2:02:27Speaker 9: Joyce, the south side.
- 2:02:29Speaker 1: Joyce takes his position.
- 2:02:31Speaker 13: Mr.
- 2:02:31Speaker 9: Trelawney, you and Gray will take the north.
- 2:02:34Speaker 1: Joyce fires.
- 2:02:36Speaker 9: What was that?
- 2:02:37Speaker 10: Thought I saw something.
- 2:02:38Speaker 1: Captain comes up and looks over Joyce's shoulder.
- 2:02:42Speaker 9: Hit him?
- 2:02:43Speaker 2: Don't know, sir.
- 2:02:44Speaker 5: Wait.
- 2:02:44Speaker 9: Easy now.
- 2:02:46Speaker 1: Peers out intently.
- 2:02:47Speaker 10: There, in the trees to the right. Don't you see
- 2:02:50Speaker 10: something moving?
- 2:02:51Speaker 13: Yes.
- 2:02:52Speaker 2: Wait.
- 2:02:52Speaker 9: He's coming nearer. Get ready. Now wait till he gets
- 2:02:57Speaker 9: to the open. Now then, ready, and.
- 2:03:00Speaker 1: Suddenly stumbles back.
- 2:03:02Speaker 9: Oh, my God.
- 2:03:04Speaker 1: It's Jim.
- 2:03:04Speaker 5: Jim?
- 2:03:05Speaker 1: Doctor comes rushing up.
- 2:03:07Speaker 5: What?
- 2:03:08Speaker 9: Don't call out. See, to the left. They're watching. Now, ready, Joyce?
- 2:03:13Speaker 9: Shoot to the left when I call. Ready?
- 2:03:16Speaker 5: Ready.
- 2:03:17Speaker 9: On the gate, Doctor.
- 2:03:18Speaker 1: The Doctor goes to the gate and unbars it.
- 2:03:21Speaker 9: Now then.
- 2:03:22Speaker 1: Calls.
- 2:03:23Speaker 9: Jim, come, come now, come, lad.
- 2:03:26Speaker 1: To Joyce.
- 2:03:28Speaker 4: Shoot, shoot, man.
- 2:03:30Speaker 1: Joyce shoots. There is a rattle of musketry from the
- 2:03:33Speaker 1: outside and then a slight pause.
- 2:03:35Speaker 9: My God, did they get him? Did they?
- 2:03:38Speaker 1: Jim comes rushing in. The doctor grabs him in his arms.
- 2:03:42Speaker 7: Thank God you're safe, lad.
- 2:03:44Speaker 4: They almost got me, sir.
- 2:03:45Speaker 8: Where have you been?
- 2:03:47Speaker 7: How did you escape?
- 2:03:49Speaker 4: I'll explain all that later, sir. There's something else you
- 2:03:51Speaker 4: ought to know. I've met a man who's been here
- 2:03:53Speaker 4: on this island three years. Ben Gunn, he says his
- 2:03:56Speaker 4: name is. He seems to have something to propose.
- 2:03:59Speaker 8: A man on the island?
- 2:04:01Speaker 9: I see something moving, sir. Get back to your places.
- 2:04:04Speaker 1: Doctor and Squire go to their places.
- 2:04:07Speaker 9: Jim, you go into the house. Get undercover.
- 2:04:10Speaker 4: No, sir. I'll stay here and help.
- 2:04:11Speaker 15: You, sir.
- 2:04:12Speaker 8: I think I see them over here, too, sir.
- 2:04:15Speaker 7: Aye, and here, too.
- 2:04:17Speaker 9: In here, sir. That is from all sides. They're getting
- 2:04:20Speaker 9: ready for a charge. Now hold steady.
- 2:04:23Speaker 8: They're starting.
- 2:04:25Speaker 9: Save your ammunition until they reach open.
- 2:04:28Speaker 7: Have they come?
- 2:04:29Speaker 9: Then let them have it.
- 2:04:30Speaker 1: There are cries and shouts together, with shots from the outside.
- 2:04:34Speaker 1: Those within the stockade return the fire, while Jim and
- 2:04:38Speaker 1: Smollett are busy loading and relaying muskets.
- 2:04:41Speaker 8: I got one of them.
- 2:04:42Speaker 9: And I, sir?
- 2:04:44Speaker 7: Four of them, on this side. They're making for the wall.
- 2:04:47Speaker 5: Shoot!
- 2:04:48Speaker 9: Keep them away! Don't let them over! At them, lads!
- 2:04:52Speaker 1: The sounds have increased. Cries, curses, and musket shots are heard.
- 2:04:57Speaker 11: Look out there!
- 2:04:57Speaker 9: You, Redruth, over your head!
- 2:05:00Speaker 1: Above another pirate's head, there appears a pirate with a
- 2:05:03Speaker 1: red kerchief over his head and a knife in his
- 2:05:06Speaker 1: mouth over man's head. Man shoots and the pirate falls.
- 2:05:10Speaker 11: That's it!
- 2:05:11Speaker 1: Three pirates, led by Anderson, break over the wall. The
- 2:05:15Speaker 1: fight now is a running one, both within and without
- 2:05:18Speaker 1: the stockade.
- 2:05:19Speaker 9: You, Squire! Gray, back in the house, lads. We'll fight
- 2:05:22Speaker 9: them there.
- 2:05:23Speaker 1: One pirate rushes at Red Ruth and stuns in fight.
- 2:05:27Speaker 1: Another rushes at the doctor and forces him to flee.
- 2:05:31Speaker 1: The fight is going very much with the pirates. It
- 2:05:34Speaker 1: is now a running fight about the house, with cutlasses
- 2:05:37Speaker 1: and pistols. For a time it is heard rather than seen,
- 2:05:42Speaker 1: for it is behind the house and within it. Then
- 2:05:45Speaker 1: suddenly from one side of the house there comes running Anderson,
- 2:05:49Speaker 1: cutlass in hand. Anderson, rushing forward.
- 2:05:54Speaker 9: Oh, man, don't leave one of them, not a one.
- 2:05:58Speaker 1: Suddenly, Jim comes rushing from the side opposite Anderson and
- 2:06:01Speaker 1: runs full tilt into him and is caught.
- 2:06:05Speaker 3: So, it's you, you young rascal.
- 2:06:09Speaker 11: Well, here's where we settles with you.
- 2:06:11Speaker 4: Oh, let me go, let me go.
- 2:06:14Speaker 5: Let you go?
- 2:06:15Speaker 11: Aye, here's where you go a long, long ways, lad.
- 2:06:20Speaker 1: He raises his cutlass. Jim shrieks. Then suddenly there is
- 2:06:24Speaker 1: a pistol shot and Anderson falls. Gray comes running around
- 2:06:28Speaker 1: the corner.
- 2:06:29Speaker 9: I was just in time, lad.
- 2:06:31Speaker 1: From the back of the house and inside, there come
- 2:06:34Speaker 1: running the pirates pursued by the doctor, Squire, and Smollett.
- 2:06:38Speaker 1: The pirates make for the wall.
- 2:06:40Speaker 15: After them!
- 2:06:41Speaker 9: Don't let them get away! Don't let them escape!
- 2:06:43Speaker 1: Suddenly, one of the pirates upon the top of the
- 2:06:46Speaker 1: stockade turns and fires deliberately at Smollett, and Smollett stumbles
- 2:06:50Speaker 1: back and finally falls.
- 2:06:53Speaker 7: Captain, you're wounded.
- 2:06:55Speaker 11: Now listen, quick!
- 2:06:56Speaker 9: Before they can reach the beach. Beat them to the
- 2:06:59Speaker 9: Hispaniola and cut her adrift. The tide will carry her
- 2:07:03Speaker 9: to the north inlet. Once there, and you've got them,
- 2:07:07Speaker 9: I tell you.
- 2:07:08Speaker 11: You've got them.
- 2:07:10Speaker 5: Go.
- 2:07:11Speaker 4: Go.
- 2:07:12Speaker 5: Quick.
- 2:07:13Speaker 9: Save the ship.
- 2:07:14Speaker 4: I'll go. No.
- 2:07:16Speaker 9: No, Jim.
- 2:07:17Speaker 4: The captain said to save the ship, and I'm going
- 2:07:19Speaker 4: to do it.
- 2:07:20Speaker 1: Curtain. Act 3, Scene 3. the Hispaniola tossing at sea.
- 2:07:27Speaker 1: The ship is in motion, but evidently not under control.
- 2:07:31Speaker 1: She is under her mainsail and two jibs. The sails
- 2:07:35Speaker 1: droop at times, and then fill with the report of
- 2:07:37Speaker 1: a gun. The tiller spins round from side to side.
- 2:07:41Speaker 1: The boat tosses and pitches as the sea runs high.
- 2:07:45Speaker 1: Two men, Black Dog and Hands, are seen upon the
- 2:07:49Speaker 1: deck of the ship, locked together in deadly wrestle, each
- 2:07:52Speaker 1: with a hand upon the other's throat. Finally, they separate
- 2:07:56Speaker 1: for a moment, and then knives flash. Black Dog, by
- 2:08:00Speaker 1: a quick movement, wounds Hands in the leg. As he
- 2:08:04Speaker 1: starts to follow up his advantage, Hands turns quickly, catches
- 2:08:08Speaker 1: Black Dog by the neck, and holds him back against
- 2:08:11Speaker 1: the rigging, his knife at his throat. Both are drunk. Hands,
- 2:08:16Speaker 1: as he gets his.
- 2:08:17Speaker 4: Wound, Oh!
- 2:08:19Speaker 5: You would, you would, would you?
- 2:08:22Speaker 9: Now then.
- 2:08:24Speaker 1: The boat lurches. At the same instant, Hands makes a
- 2:08:27Speaker 1: lunge and catches Black Dog.
- 2:08:29Speaker 9: Now then, speak.
- 2:08:32Speaker 3: You set the ship adrift, you did.
- 2:08:34Speaker 5: Say it, say it.
- 2:08:36Speaker 1: Struggling.
- 2:08:37Speaker 2: No, no.
- 2:08:39Speaker 3: You'll never tell that to Silver.
- 2:08:41Speaker 5: Now, for the last time, say it, say it all. No.
- 2:08:46Speaker 2: Then there.
- 2:08:48Speaker 1: Stabs him.
- 2:08:49Speaker 15: You'll never tell Silver.
- 2:08:51Speaker 1: Shakes him again and again as he speaks. Throws him
- 2:08:55Speaker 1: from him. Tries to stumble over the deck, but is
- 2:08:59Speaker 1: forced to catch the rigging of the mainsail.
- 2:09:01Speaker 2: What's this?
- 2:09:03Speaker 15: By thunder, he's got me! He got me!
- 2:09:06Speaker 3: I can't see! What is it?
- 2:09:08Speaker 1: Growing more and more terrified.
- 2:09:10Speaker 15: I've gone blind!
- 2:09:11Speaker 3: I've gone blind!
- 2:09:13Speaker 1: Sinks back in the rigging, trying to hold himself up,
- 2:09:16Speaker 1: apparently in a faint. For a moment there is silence
- 2:09:20Speaker 1: while the boat tosses from side to side. Jim appears
- 2:09:23Speaker 1: climbing over the side of the boat. For a moment
- 2:09:26Speaker 1: he looks about timidly and afraid. Then he calls, Ahoy!
- 2:09:32Speaker 9: Shipmates!
- 2:09:32Speaker 4: Ahoy!
- 2:09:34Speaker 1: He waits for an answer. When he gets none, he
- 2:09:37Speaker 1: scrambles down on deck and with pistols drawn goes carefully
- 2:09:41Speaker 1: over the boat. Finally he sees O'Brien dead and Hans
- 2:09:45Speaker 1: apparently dead. He starts back.
- 2:09:48Speaker 4: Oh, dead?
- 2:09:50Speaker 1: As he starts away, there is a groan. Jim turns quickly.
- 2:09:54Speaker 1: He is very frightened. With a cry, he rushes out
- 2:09:58Speaker 1: and on the companionway. He comes back almost at once.
- 2:10:02Speaker 9: Gone, all gone.
- 2:10:03Speaker 4: I've got the ship. I've got the ship.
- 2:10:05Speaker 1: He turns to go to the tiller.
- 2:10:07Speaker 4: If I can only sail her.
- 2:10:09Speaker 1: As he hears a groan.
- 2:10:10Speaker 11: Who's that?
- 2:10:11Speaker 1: He waits for an answer. When he gets none, he
- 2:10:14Speaker 1: stands fearfully waiting. Again, a groan.
- 2:10:18Speaker 4: Answer, answer, or I fire.
- 2:10:20Speaker 2: Oh, it is your hands, lad.
- 2:10:26Speaker 4: So it's you, Mr.
- 2:10:26Speaker 5: Hands.
- 2:10:27Speaker 4: Much hurt?
- 2:10:28Speaker 15: I'm dying, dying.
- 2:10:30Speaker 5: I can't move.
- 2:10:32Speaker 4: See that you don't, for the first move I shoot.
- 2:10:35Speaker 15: And where might you have come from?
- 2:10:37Speaker 4: I have come to take possession of this ship.
- 2:10:40Speaker 1: As Hands laughs.
- 2:10:41Speaker 4: So, Mr. Hands, you'll regard me as captain until further notice.
- 2:10:45Speaker 1: Wickedly.
- 2:10:46Speaker 15: Captain, eh?
- 2:10:47Speaker 5: Jim laughs.
- 2:10:48Speaker 1: Presenting his pistols.
- 2:10:49Speaker 4: Is it understood, Mr.
- 2:10:51Speaker 5: Hands?
- 2:10:51Speaker 11: Aye, it's understood.
- 2:10:54Speaker 4: Then first we'll strike those colors.
- 2:10:56Speaker 1: Pulls down the jolly Roger.
- 2:10:58Speaker 4: There, God save the King, and there's an end to
- 2:11:01Speaker 4: Captain Silver, too.
- 2:11:02Speaker 1: Throws flag overboard.
- 2:11:04Speaker 15: Will you tell me how you might have come aboard?
- 2:11:07Speaker 4: All night I've been below in a little boat. It
- 2:11:10Speaker 4: was I who cut the ship adrift.'' You?
- 2:11:13Speaker 15: And I killed him there for it.
- 2:11:15Speaker 4: I'm going to—'' You' ve been drifting all night.' I'm going
- 2:11:18Speaker 4: to beach this ship at the north inlet, where we
- 2:11:21Speaker 4: can get off the provisions, and where Silver will never
- 2:11:23Speaker 4: find her.
- 2:11:24Speaker 5: All alone, eh?
- 2:11:26Speaker 4: Yes, alone.
- 2:11:27Speaker 15: Ever sail a boat, mate?
- 2:11:28Speaker 4: I'm going to sail this one, with your help, Mr.
- 2:11:31Speaker 19: Hands.
- 2:11:33Speaker 15: Oh, with my help, is it?
- 2:11:35Speaker 4: Just so, Mr.
- 2:11:36Speaker 5: Hands.
- 2:11:37Speaker 15: Now, I'll make a bargain with you, Hawkins.
- 2:11:41Speaker 4: Captain Hawkins.
- 2:11:42Speaker 15: Captain Hawkins. This leg's bleeding.
- 2:11:46Speaker 5: I'll die, I will.
- 2:11:47Speaker 18: If you don't give me a hand, give me a
- 2:11:49Speaker 18: kerchief to tie my wound up and some food and drink,
- 2:11:53Speaker 18: and I'll tell you how to sail her.
- 2:11:54Speaker 15: And that's about square.
- 2:11:56Speaker 4: You know where the north inlet is?
- 2:11:58Speaker 15: To be sure.
- 2:11:59Speaker 4: You'll take her there?
- 2:12:00Speaker 3: Aye.
- 2:12:02Speaker 4: Mind at the first sign of any treachery from you.
- 2:12:05Speaker 15: I'm no such fool. Go below and get me some brandy.
- 2:12:09Speaker 4: No.
- 2:12:09Speaker 15: But you said.
- 2:12:11Speaker 4: First the boat.
- 2:12:12Speaker 2: Smart lad.
- 2:12:14Speaker 15: Take no chances. Well, have it your way. Take a
- 2:12:19Speaker 15: haul on the mainsail there.
- 2:12:21Speaker 1: Jim goes to the mainsail and pulls at the ropes
- 2:12:23Speaker 1: to make her fast.
- 2:12:25Speaker 15: Hold her tight.
- 2:12:26Speaker 5: There.
- 2:12:27Speaker 1: As Jim works, Hans seems always to be growing stronger
- 2:12:31Speaker 1: and wilier.
- 2:12:33Speaker 15: She'll sail under the mainsail alone. Now put your helm hard, Ali.
- 2:12:38Speaker 1: Hans becomes more and more active while Jim's eyes are
- 2:12:41Speaker 1: upon steering. He surreptitiously tries and is able to move
- 2:12:45Speaker 1: back and forth.
- 2:12:45Speaker 15: It's a narrow channel. You'll have to feel your way.
- 2:12:49Speaker 4: She's safe so far.
- 2:12:51Speaker 15: You're doing fine, lad. Couldn't do better myself. And now,
- 2:12:55Speaker 15: come here.
- 2:12:56Speaker 1: Comes up.
- 2:12:57Speaker 4: What do you want?
- 2:12:58Speaker 15: A little drop of brandy. I've earned it now.
- 2:13:02Speaker 4: All right, I'll get it. You sure the boat will
- 2:13:04Speaker 4: be all right?
- 2:13:05Speaker 15: Sure, old steady.
- 2:13:06Speaker 13: All right.
- 2:13:07Speaker 1: Jim enters cabin. Hands crawls to knife, hides it in
- 2:13:11Speaker 1: his bosom, and returns to former position as Jim returns.
- 2:13:16Speaker 4: I couldn't find any, not a drop left.
- 2:13:18Speaker 15: Jim, I'm for my long home, lad, this time, and
- 2:13:22Speaker 15: no mistake. Come here.
- 2:13:25Speaker 1: As Jim comes a step nearer, Hands places his hand
- 2:13:28Speaker 1: in his jacket where he has concealed the knife. Jim, startled,
- 2:13:32Speaker 1: draws his pistols.
- 2:13:34Speaker 3: None of that.
- 2:13:35Speaker 4: Take your hand out, take it out, or I'll.
- 2:13:38Speaker 1: Hands, draw out his hand with stick of tobacco.
- 2:13:42Speaker 15: Just getting my tobacco, see? Will you cut me a
- 2:13:46Speaker 15: junk of that?
- 2:13:47Speaker 5: I haven't a knife.
- 2:13:50Speaker 4: Throw it here.
- 2:13:51Speaker 1: Hans throws him the tobacco and he starts to cut it.
- 2:13:54Speaker 4: If I were in your place, I'd be thinking of
- 2:13:56Speaker 4: prayers and not tobacco.
- 2:13:58Speaker 5: Why?
- 2:13:59Speaker 15: Tell me that.
- 2:14:00Speaker 4: Why? You've broken your trust. You've lived in sin and
- 2:14:03Speaker 4: lies and blood and you ask me why? For God's mercy,
- 2:14:07Speaker 4: that's why, Mr.
- 2:14:07Speaker 5: Hans.
- 2:14:08Speaker 1: Jim gives him back the tobacco and goes to the tiller.
- 2:14:12Speaker 4: I can see the beach from here.
- 2:14:14Speaker 15: All that means, Southern Notch.
- 2:14:16Speaker 5: All right, lad.
- 2:14:17Speaker 4: All right, sir.
- 2:14:18Speaker 1: Hans now, knife in hand, has worked up back of Jim. Jim,
- 2:14:23Speaker 1: holding the tiller, has not noticed him, but the moment
- 2:14:26Speaker 1: that Hans throws himself forward with a cry, Jim suddenly
- 2:14:30Speaker 1: sees him and throws himself aside to avoid the blow.
- 2:14:34Speaker 1: As he does so, he lets go the tiller, which
- 2:14:37Speaker 1: springs back and hits Hans across the chest, stopping him.
- 2:14:41Speaker 1: Before he could recover, I was safe out of the
- 2:14:44Speaker 1: corner where he had trapped me, with all the deck
- 2:14:47Speaker 1: to dodge about. Just forward of the mainmast I stopped,
- 2:14:51Speaker 1: drew from my pocket my pistol, though he was once
- 2:14:54Speaker 1: more coming directly toward me.
- 2:14:56Speaker 4: Stop, stop, or I fire.
- 2:14:58Speaker 15: You little rat! I've got a score to settle with you.
- 2:15:03Speaker 1: Starts forward.
- 2:15:04Speaker 5: Stop!
- 2:15:06Speaker 1: As Hans still comes forward.
- 2:15:08Speaker 4: Stop!
- 2:15:09Speaker 1: As Hans still comes forward.
- 2:15:11Speaker 4: Stop! Well, then, take it.
- 2:15:14Speaker 1: He pulls the trigger. The gun doesn't explode. Hands, with
- 2:15:19Speaker 1: a cry of exultation.
- 2:15:20Speaker 7: Aha!
- 2:15:22Speaker 15: So the guns don't go off.
- 2:15:23Speaker 18: Never thought to prime them, my fine captain.
- 2:15:27Speaker 15: Now then, my brave lad, you're going to save the boat,
- 2:15:30Speaker 15: are you? We'll see. We'll see.
- 2:15:33Speaker 1: Meanwhile, Hands has been approaching, and Jim has been fleeing.
- 2:15:38Speaker 1: Wounded as he was, it was wonderful how fast he was.
- 2:15:41Speaker 1: I had no time to try my other pistol. One
- 2:15:44Speaker 1: thing I saw, I must simply retreat before me, or
- 2:15:48Speaker 1: he would speedily hold me boxed in the stern. I
- 2:15:51Speaker 1: placed my hands on the mainmast and waited, every nerve stretched.
- 2:15:55Speaker 1: Seeing I meant to dodge, he also paused, and a
- 2:15:59Speaker 1: moment or two passed in feints on his part and
- 2:16:02Speaker 1: correspondent movements on mine. It was such a game as
- 2:16:05Speaker 1: I had often played at home about the rocks— and
- 2:16:08Speaker 1: I thought I could hold my own at it against
- 2:16:11Speaker 1: an elderly seaman with a wounded thigh. Well, while I
- 2:16:15Speaker 1: stood thus, suddenly the Hispaniola struck, staggered, ground for an
- 2:16:20Speaker 1: instant on the sand, and then swift as a blow
- 2:16:23Speaker 1: canted over on the port side till the deck stood
- 2:16:26Speaker 1: at an angle of about forty-five degrees. We were both
- 2:16:29Speaker 1: capsized in a second, and both of us rolled about
- 2:16:33Speaker 1: together into the scuppers, but I was first to foot again.
- 2:16:37Speaker 1: The sudden canting of the ship made the deck no
- 2:16:40Speaker 1: place for running, and I had to find some new
- 2:16:42Speaker 1: way of escape. Quick as thought I sprung into the mizzen-shrouds,
- 2:16:47Speaker 1: rattled up hand over hand, and did not draw breath
- 2:16:50Speaker 1: until I was safe on the cross-trees. As they play
- 2:16:54Speaker 1: a sort of grim hide-and-seek, he makes a movement and
- 2:16:57Speaker 1: misses Jim.
- 2:16:58Speaker 18: By thunder, if this leg were right, it would be
- 2:17:02Speaker 18: quick work for you.
- 2:17:03Speaker 15: But I'll get you. You'll not get out of this corner.'
- 2:17:07Speaker 15: I've got you now. I've got you.
- 2:17:10Speaker 1: As Hands almost corners Jim, the boat strikes and they
- 2:17:13Speaker 1: are tumbled together. Jim scurries to the main mast.
- 2:17:17Speaker 4: Not yet, Mr.
- 2:17:18Speaker 5: Hands.
- 2:17:18Speaker 4: Not yet.
- 2:17:19Speaker 1: Scurries up the main mast.
- 2:17:22Speaker 15: If that boat hadn't struck, I'd have had you. And
- 2:17:25Speaker 15: I've got you now. You can't get down. I've got
- 2:17:30Speaker 15: you up a tree, my fine captain.
- 2:17:32Speaker 1: Jim draws other pistol.
- 2:17:34Speaker 4: I still have another pistol, Mr.
- 2:17:36Speaker 10: Hands.
- 2:17:36Speaker 4: It is not like the other. This one is primed.
- 2:17:39Speaker 4: Another step and I'll blow your brains out.
- 2:17:42Speaker 5: Stops. Eh?
- 2:17:44Speaker 4: Drop that knife, Mr.
- 2:17:45Speaker 12: Hands.
- 2:17:46Speaker 4: Drop that knife. Drop it, I say.
- 2:17:49Speaker 2: Drop it?
- 2:17:50Speaker 15: Very well, lad.
- 2:17:51Speaker 1: Suddenly hurls the dagger.
- 2:17:53Speaker 15: There, take it.
- 2:17:55Speaker 1: With a cry, as the knife strikes him in the shoulder,
- 2:17:58Speaker 1: turns away.
- 2:17:58Speaker 5: Oh!
- 2:18:00Speaker 1: Then, as Hands with shout makes toward him, he pulls
- 2:18:03Speaker 1: the triggers on the pistols, and Hands, with a cry—
- 2:18:07Speaker 1: pitches forward as Jim lets fall the pistols. With an effort, Jim,
- 2:18:12Speaker 1: crying out under the pain, finally wrenches his shoulder free,
- 2:18:16Speaker 1: and then tottering and almost faint, he.
- 2:18:18Speaker 4: Cries, The stockade! Now for the stockade!
- 2:18:23Speaker 1: Curtain End of Act 3 Act IV. Scene I. The Stockade.
- 2:18:40Speaker 1: When the curtain rises, it is early dawn. The pirates
- 2:19:06Speaker 1: are in possession of the stockade, but there are only
- 2:19:09Speaker 1: six of them left. These are asleep about the stockade.
- 2:19:14Speaker 1: Silver leans against one of the posts of the porch, asleep,
- 2:19:17Speaker 1: his parrot perched upon a stick just above him. Among
- 2:19:21Speaker 1: the pirates are Mary, Morgan, Dirk, and Anderson. Several of
- 2:19:26Speaker 1: them have their heads bandaged as if wounded. For a
- 2:19:30Speaker 1: moment after the curtain goes up, nothing happens. Then over
- 2:19:34Speaker 1: the wall there comes Jim. In the half-light he stumbles around,
- 2:19:38Speaker 1: peering at the sleepers. Finally he comes up to Silver,
- 2:19:42Speaker 1: and then he discovers that the pirates now occupy the stockade.
- 2:19:46Speaker 1: With a cry he stumbles back and starts away, but
- 2:19:50Speaker 1: just as he does so the parrot cries out, Pieces
- 2:19:53Speaker 1: of eight, pieces of eight. Immediately there is a stir,
- 2:19:57Speaker 1: and Jim, as he runs toward the gate, bolts into Mary,
- 2:20:01Speaker 1: who has awakened and is sitting up on the ground.
- 2:20:04Speaker 4: Squire, squire, Silver!
- 2:20:06Speaker 1: GEORGE MARY CATCHING JIM WHO STRUGGLES No you don't!
- 2:20:11Speaker 3: No you don't!
- 2:20:13Speaker 4: Let me be!
- 2:20:13Speaker 13: Let me be!
- 2:20:14Speaker 16: Silver!
- 2:20:15Speaker 5: Silver!
- 2:20:16Speaker 1: They are all awake by this time, and it is
- 2:20:18Speaker 1: now light.
- 2:20:19Speaker 13: What is it?
- 2:20:21Speaker 3: Look here. Here's a nice little catch.
- 2:20:23Speaker 13: Well, shiver my timbers if it ain't James Hawkins.
- 2:20:26Speaker 3: I ain't looking brash as ever.
- 2:20:28Speaker 14: I'd like to.
- 2:20:30Speaker 13: Come, lad, speak up.
- 2:20:31Speaker 1: AS JIM STANDS WITH HIS BACK AGAINST THE WALL AND REFUSES.
- 2:20:34Speaker 13: TO ANSWER Just dropped in for an early morning call.
- 2:20:38Speaker 1: Still, Jim refuses to answer.
- 2:20:40Speaker 13: Now, I take that friendly. Well, lad, speak up. Speak up.
- 2:20:43Speaker 4: Dr. Livesey and Squatchulani.
- 2:20:46Speaker 13: This here gets me at due, but, lad, I'm going
- 2:20:48Speaker 13: to know what you've been up to. I'll not say
- 2:20:50Speaker 13: a word until you tell me where my friends are.
- 2:20:52Speaker 8: What?
- 2:20:53Speaker 3: The little rat.
- 2:20:54Speaker 1: Both he and Morgan make a movement toward Jim. To
- 2:20:58Speaker 1: Morgan and Mary.
- 2:20:59Speaker 13: Who's captain here?
- 2:21:01Speaker 1: Turning to Jim.
- 2:21:02Speaker 13: I want you to recognize your position. Here you are
- 2:21:05Speaker 13: with us, who, you'll admit, ain't got no cause to
- 2:21:07Speaker 13: be too friendly.
- 2:21:09Speaker 8: Aye, that's right.
- 2:21:10Speaker 13: So the truth, lad, the truth.
- 2:21:12Speaker 4: I have a right to know first what's what, why
- 2:21:15Speaker 4: you're here, and where my friends are.
- 2:21:17Speaker 3: What's what? Ah, he'd be a lucky one as no bat.
- 2:21:21Speaker 1: To Mary.
- 2:21:23Speaker 13: Batten down your atches.
- 2:21:24Speaker 1: To Jim.
- 2:21:26Speaker 13: Now come, lad, come.
- 2:21:27Speaker 4: Not until you tell me.
- 2:21:29Speaker 8: You won't, eh?
- 2:21:30Speaker 13: We'll see.
- 2:21:31Speaker 1: To Morgan.
- 2:21:32Speaker 13: Hold there, Tom Morgan.
- 2:21:34Speaker 1: As Morgan growls angrily.
- 2:21:36Speaker 13: Jim's right. It's only fair he knows.
- 2:21:39Speaker 1: Turns to Jim.
- 2:21:40Speaker 13: Last night down came Dr. Lizzie with the flag of truce. Silver,
- 2:21:44Speaker 13: says he, let's bargain.
- 2:21:46Speaker 3: A pretty bargain it was.
- 2:21:48Speaker 1: Angrily to Mary.
- 2:21:50Speaker 13: The bargain I made. Him and me. Him and his
- 2:21:52Speaker 13: friends to give up this place and us not to
- 2:21:54Speaker 13: touch him.
- 2:21:55Speaker 9: And why?
- 2:21:56Speaker 13: Because they had ammunition we needed. Because they had this
- 2:21:58Speaker 13: place we needed. Because they can't get away.
- 2:22:01Speaker 4: Why did they change then?
- 2:22:03Speaker 13: They thought they'd get out and make for the ship
- 2:22:04Speaker 13: and leave us here, and I let them think so.
- 2:22:07Speaker 1: Sinisterly.
- 2:22:09Speaker 13: I've got the only boat to reach that ship, and
- 2:22:10Speaker 13: I've got it hidden. I've beaten them, fooled them at
- 2:22:13Speaker 13: every turn.
- 2:22:15Speaker 3: Oh, have you?
- 2:22:16Speaker 13: I by gum I have.
- 2:22:18Speaker 4: Well, then, look there. The ship's gone.
- 2:22:21Speaker 13: Well, shiver my timbers.
- 2:22:23Speaker 1: There is great astonishment among the men. For a moment
- 2:22:26Speaker 1: they seem stunned. Then suddenly there is growing excitement.
- 2:22:31Speaker 13: Marooned.
- 2:22:32Speaker 5: Tricked.
- 2:22:33Speaker 1: Beaten fooled with a sudden cry they make a dash
- 2:22:36Speaker 1: toward jim wait as the men growl angrily silver speaks
- 2:22:41Speaker 1: meaningly to jim jim at bay.
- 2:22:45Speaker 4: I'm not such a fool that i don't know what
- 2:22:46Speaker 4: i have to look.
- 2:22:47Speaker 1: For the men shout at him aye aye and threaten.
- 2:22:52Speaker 4: Well let the worst come it's little i care but
- 2:22:54Speaker 4: there's a thing or two i have to tell you
- 2:22:56Speaker 4: first you're in a bad way ships lost treasures lost
- 2:23:00Speaker 4: men lost your whole business gone.
- 2:23:02Speaker 1: There is a growl from the men.
- 2:23:04Speaker 4: And do you want to know who did it? Why,
- 2:23:07Speaker 4: I did it.
- 2:23:08Speaker 1: Morgan. Starts for Jim.
- 2:23:11Speaker 6: You!
- 2:23:12Speaker 3: I'll slit his throat down!
- 2:23:13Speaker 1: Silver thunders at Mary and Morgan.
- 2:23:16Speaker 4: I was in the apple barrel. I heard you and
- 2:23:18Speaker 4: Morgan in hands, all of you, and told every word
- 2:23:21Speaker 4: of it. And as for the Hispaniola, it was I
- 2:23:24Speaker 4: who cut her hawser. It was I who killed the
- 2:23:26Speaker 4: men you had aboard her.
- 2:23:28Speaker 13: You!
- 2:23:28Speaker 4: You! I killed them, I tell you, and I brought
- 2:23:31Speaker 4: that ship where you'll never see her more, not one
- 2:23:34Speaker 4: of you. Laughs on my side. I've had the top
- 2:23:37Speaker 4: of this business from the first, and I no more
- 2:23:39Speaker 4: fear you than I do a fly.
- 2:23:42Speaker 1: As the men threaten, but are held back by silver.
- 2:23:45Speaker 4: Kill me if you please, or spare me. But one
- 2:23:47Speaker 4: thing I'll say, if you spare me, bygones are bygones,
- 2:23:51Speaker 4: and when you fellows are in court for piracy, I'll
- 2:23:53Speaker 4: save you all I can. Kill me and do yourselves
- 2:23:56Speaker 4: no good, or spare me and keep a witness to
- 2:23:58Speaker 4: save you from the gallows.
- 2:24:00Speaker 1: The men, with the exception of Silver, are in a
- 2:24:03Speaker 1: little group whispering together. Silver stands and stares at Jim.
- 2:24:08Speaker 1: His manner has changed. He is no longer threatening, but
- 2:24:12Speaker 1: rather sly, as if feeling his way.
- 2:24:14Speaker 13: So, you cut the boat adrift?
- 2:24:18Speaker 5: Yes.
- 2:24:18Speaker 13: And you know where it is, eh?
- 2:24:21Speaker 4: But I'm not going to tell.
- 2:24:22Speaker 20: That boy's not going to live.
- 2:24:26Speaker 14: Then by thunder here goes.
- 2:24:28Speaker 1: Morgan, with knife drawn, springs toward Jim, right center, but
- 2:24:32Speaker 1: Silver suddenly jumps in front of the boy and stands
- 2:24:35Speaker 1: between him and the men.
- 2:24:37Speaker 13: Avast there, Tom Morgan. Maybe you think you're captain here.
- 2:24:40Speaker 13: By the powers I'll teach you better. Have I lived
- 2:24:42Speaker 13: this many years, and a son of a rum-punching cock
- 2:24:44Speaker 13: has had to thwart my house at the latter end
- 2:24:46Speaker 13: of it? Well, I'm ready. Take a cutlass, him that dares,
- 2:24:50Speaker 13: and I'll see the color of his insides.
- 2:24:52Speaker 1: As the men all draw away in a group and
- 2:24:54Speaker 1: whisper together.
- 2:24:56Speaker 13: I'm cappin' here by election and because I'm the best
- 2:24:58Speaker 13: man by a long sea-mile. You won't fight, then by
- 2:25:01Speaker 13: thunder you'll obey. I like that boy. He's more man
- 2:25:04Speaker 13: than any pair of rats that you hear. And let
- 2:25:06Speaker 13: me see him that'll lay a hand on him.
- 2:25:08Speaker 1: During this part of the speech, the men have come
- 2:25:11Speaker 1: back with Mary at their head.
- 2:25:13Speaker 13: While you seem to have something to say, pipe up
- 2:25:15Speaker 13: and let me hear it.
- 2:25:16Speaker 3: Axe your pardon, sir. You're pretty free with some of
- 2:25:19Speaker 3: the rules. Maybe you'll kindly keep your eye on the rest.
- 2:25:22Speaker 13: Meanin' by that?
- 2:25:23Speaker 3: This crew's dissatisfied. This crew don't rally bullying a marlin spike.
- 2:25:28Speaker 3: This crew has rights, and by our own rules we
- 2:25:31Speaker 3: can talk together. I ask your pardon, sir, acknowledging you
- 2:25:34Speaker 3: as captain at this present, but I claim my right
- 2:25:37Speaker 3: and step inside for a counsel.
- 2:25:39Speaker 1: With an elaborate sea salute, he marches into the log house.
- 2:25:43Speaker 1: One after another, the rest followed his example, each making
- 2:25:47Speaker 1: a salute as he passed.
- 2:25:49Speaker 20: Crew's right.
- 2:25:51Speaker 1: Salutes and goes in.
- 2:25:53Speaker 11: According to rules.
- 2:25:54Speaker 1: Salutes and goes in.
- 2:25:57Speaker 14: Folks will counsel.
- 2:25:58Speaker 1: Salutes and goes in.
- 2:26:00Speaker 16: Aye, sir.
- 2:26:01Speaker 15: Folks will counsel.
- 2:26:04Speaker 1: Silver intensely and confidentially as soon as they're gone.
- 2:26:08Speaker 13: Jim, you're within half a plank of death.
- 2:26:11Speaker 1: Jim draws back at the idea of torture.
- 2:26:14Speaker 4: What are they going to do?
- 2:26:16Speaker 13: First they're going to tip me the black spot.
- 2:26:18Speaker 4: Same as Billy Bones.
- 2:26:20Speaker 5: Aye.
- 2:26:21Speaker 1: Takes Jim by the arm.
- 2:26:23Speaker 13: But I'm going to stand by you loud through thick
- 2:26:24Speaker 13: and thin.
- 2:26:25Speaker 2: What?
- 2:26:27Speaker 13: I'll confess I didn't mean to till you spoke up
- 2:26:29Speaker 13: and told about that ship. Once I looked into the
- 2:26:31Speaker 13: bay and see her gone, well, I'm tough, but I
- 2:26:34Speaker 13: gave out. Ship gone, net gone, that's about the size
- 2:26:36Speaker 13: of it.
- 2:26:37Speaker 1: Intensely to Jim.
- 2:26:39Speaker 13: Sure you've got her hidden?
- 2:26:40Speaker 4: I'll not tell where.
- 2:26:42Speaker 13: And I'm not going to ask, but you're sure she's safe? Yes, sure.
- 2:26:48Speaker 13: That being the case, why did the doctor give me that?
- 2:26:51Speaker 1: Draws out the chart surreptitiously.
- 2:26:54Speaker 5: What?
- 2:26:55Speaker 1: As Jim looks startled.
- 2:26:57Speaker 13: I look at it. Is that the right one?
- 2:26:59Speaker 5: Is it?
- 2:27:00Speaker 4: I don't know how you got this, what torture you
- 2:27:02Speaker 4: put them to, to make them give it to you,
- 2:27:04Speaker 4: but you'll never get that treasure.
- 2:27:05Speaker 11: Never.
- 2:27:07Speaker 5: Eh?
- 2:27:07Speaker 4: I've got that ship, and I've got her hidden, and
- 2:27:09Speaker 4: I am not going to tell you where she is,
- 2:27:11Speaker 4: no matter what you do.
- 2:27:13Speaker 5: Never.
- 2:27:13Speaker 9: Never.
- 2:27:14Speaker 4: You may get the treasure, but we've got the ship, Mr. Silver,
- 2:27:17Speaker 4: and we won't give her up.
- 2:27:18Speaker 13: I lad a proper spirit but just now i'm thinking
- 2:27:20Speaker 13: i'm your last card here and by the living thunder
- 2:27:22Speaker 13: you're mine i'll save your life so be i can
- 2:27:25Speaker 13: from them in there but tit for tat you save
- 2:27:28Speaker 13: long john when the time comes i'll do what i
- 2:27:31Speaker 13: can a bargain now understand i'm on the squire's side
- 2:27:34Speaker 13: and i know you've got that ship hidden.
- 2:27:36Speaker 1: As jim starts to protest there lad.
- 2:27:39Speaker 13: I'm not asking what I know when a game's up.
- 2:27:41Speaker 13: I do, and I know a lad that's staunch. Ah,
- 2:27:44Speaker 13: you that's young. You and me might have done a
- 2:27:45Speaker 13: power good together.
- 2:27:47Speaker 1: As the men reappear on the porch,'.
- 2:27:49Speaker 4: Here they come.
- 2:27:50Speaker 13: Stand up, Plucky, and by thunder I still have a
- 2:27:53Speaker 13: shot in my locker.
- 2:27:54Speaker 1: As the buccaneers hesitate to approach—'.
- 2:27:57Speaker 13: Well, step up, I won't eat you. Which has it, you, Mary?
- 2:28:01Speaker 1: Comes timidly forward.
- 2:28:03Speaker 3: Aye, sir.
- 2:28:04Speaker 13: Well, hand it over, lubber, I know the rules. I
- 2:28:06Speaker 13: won't hurt a deputation.
- 2:28:08Speaker 1: Mary hands Silver a piece of paper. Silver glances at
- 2:28:11Speaker 1: it and then hands it to Jim.
- 2:28:13Speaker 13: Jim, do you know what that is?
- 2:28:15Speaker 4: The black spot.
- 2:28:17Speaker 13: Right you was.
- 2:28:18Speaker 1: Looks over Jim's shoulder.
- 2:28:20Speaker 13: Hello, look here now, where would you say that was
- 2:28:22Speaker 13: cut from?
- 2:28:23Speaker 3: The Bible, sir.
- 2:28:24Speaker 4: See, it reads, without her dogs and murderers.
- 2:28:28Speaker 13: And very fitting, too. What fool's got a Bible? You, Mary?
- 2:28:31Speaker 8: Aye, aye, sir.
- 2:28:33Speaker 13: Well, no good'll come of it. You'll swing for it.
- 2:28:35Speaker 13: It ain't lucky.
- 2:28:37Speaker 3: Aye, aye, sir. Oh, ain't it? This crew has tipped
- 2:28:39Speaker 3: you the black spot in full counsel, as in duty bound.
- 2:28:43Speaker 3: Just you turn it over and see what's wrote there.
- 2:28:46Speaker 13: Thank you, George. You always was brisk for business. Well,
- 2:28:49Speaker 13: what is it?
- 2:28:50Speaker 1: Turns it over and reads— D-E-P-P-O-S-E-D.
- 2:28:55Speaker 13: Depth posed. And very prettily wrote, I swear.
- 2:28:58Speaker 3: Come, you don't fool this crew no more. You're over now.
- 2:29:01Speaker 13: Thought you said you knowed the rules.
- 2:29:03Speaker 5: Well?
- 2:29:04Speaker 13: Well, according to rules, I'm still your captain till you
- 2:29:06Speaker 13: out with your grievances and I reply.
- 2:29:07Speaker 3: All right, then. First and last, you made a hash
- 2:29:10Speaker 3: of this crew. And now, for some reason, you're holding
- 2:29:12Speaker 3: back that boy from us. You've bungled the whole thing.
- 2:29:16Speaker 13: Bungled, is it? You say bungled.
- 2:29:19Speaker 14: Aye, aye, bungled.
- 2:29:21Speaker 13: I by gum, if you could see how bad it's bungled.
- 2:29:23Speaker 13: We were that near to give it my next stiff
- 2:29:25Speaker 13: with thinking on it. And do you know all the
- 2:29:26Speaker 13: stands between us and to swing and sun-dry? That boy,
- 2:29:29Speaker 13: he might be our last chance. By thunder you've neither
- 2:29:32Speaker 13: senses nor memory. I let the squire and his friends go.
- 2:29:34Speaker 13: All right. And do you want to know why? Well,
- 2:29:37Speaker 13: that's why.
- 2:29:38Speaker 1: Takes out the map and throws it on the ground.
- 2:29:41Speaker 13: I got what I wanted. I got the map.
- 2:29:43Speaker 1: As the men pick up the map and look at it.
- 2:29:46Speaker 13: I look at it. Mull it over, you rum-punchins. Is
- 2:29:48Speaker 13: that the real one this time or not?
- 2:29:50Speaker 5: J.F.
- 2:29:51Speaker 14: And a score below.
- 2:29:52Speaker 3: With a close hitch in it.
- 2:29:54Speaker 20: Flint's fist.
- 2:29:56Speaker 1: Blood and bones, mate.
- 2:29:58Speaker 20: It's the map. We've got the map.
- 2:30:01Speaker 3: Long John. Long John Silver.
- 2:30:03Speaker 13: So that's your true word.
- 2:30:05Speaker 11: Captain Silver.
- 2:30:07Speaker 20: Captain Silver. Captain forever.
- 2:30:10Speaker 14: Come, mates. Picks and shovels.
- 2:30:13Speaker 11: I the treasure. Flint's treasure chest.
- 2:30:17Speaker 1: George Mary. As they get things.
- 2:30:20Speaker 3: Wait.
- 2:30:21Speaker 5: Well?
- 2:30:22Speaker 3: When we do find this money, how are we to
- 2:30:24Speaker 3: get it home in us no ship?
- 2:30:26Speaker 14: By the powers, that's right.
- 2:30:29Speaker 1: Arrow, appealing to Silver.
- 2:30:31Speaker 20: Long, John.
- 2:30:32Speaker 3: Aye, then tell us that, Silver, tell us that.
- 2:30:36Speaker 4: Aye, how, how?
- 2:30:39Speaker 13: By the powers, but you ain't got the invention of
- 2:30:41Speaker 13: a cockroach. You can't find a way to get that
- 2:30:43Speaker 13: money home.
- 2:30:44Speaker 11: Not you.
- 2:30:44Speaker 13: It's Silver, Silver. Well, then I tell you. There's your map,
- 2:30:48Speaker 13: and that's the way to Flint's treasure. Chest, picks, and
- 2:30:51Speaker 13: shovels it is. And once we find it, then by thunder,
- 2:30:53Speaker 13: if this lad doesn't lead us to that boat, I'll
- 2:30:55Speaker 13: cut his heart out.
- 2:30:56Speaker 9: That's right.
- 2:30:57Speaker 3: Kill him.
- 2:30:58Speaker 4: Long John.
- 2:31:00Speaker 1: Curtain. Act 4, Scene 2. The Spyglass Mountain, a heavily
- 2:31:06Speaker 1: wooded mountainside with trees and shrubs on all sides, and
- 2:31:10Speaker 1: a thick undergrowth terminating in a large tree at center
- 2:31:13Speaker 1: and up, the base which alone can be seen. In
- 2:31:17Speaker 1: front of this tree there is a small plateau, grown
- 2:31:20Speaker 1: up on every side with shrubs. At right among the shrubs,
- 2:31:24Speaker 1: and partly concealed by them, a skeleton, with hands over
- 2:31:28Speaker 1: its head, pointing to tree, and feet extended in opposite direction.
- 2:31:33Speaker 1: When the curtain rises, the pirates, with the exception of Dick,
- 2:31:37Speaker 1: are seen grouped around Silver and studying the map. Dick
- 2:31:41Speaker 1: sits upon a log, a little apart, his head in
- 2:31:44Speaker 1: his hands as if sick.
- 2:31:46Speaker 13: Read it out, Barbecue.
- 2:31:48Speaker 1: Silver reads from map.
- 2:31:51Speaker 13: Tall tree, spyglass shoulder, bearing a point to the north
- 2:31:54Speaker 13: of north-north-east. Skeleton island, east-southeast and by-east ten feet.
- 2:31:59Speaker 3: This is spyglass shoulder.
- 2:32:02Speaker 14: And plenty of big trees.
- 2:32:04Speaker 3: Enough for all of us and more.
- 2:32:06Speaker 20: He buried it well, Flint did, in a wicked spot.
- 2:32:11Speaker 1: Dick starts up.
- 2:32:13Speaker 11: Listen.
- 2:32:15Speaker 5: What?
- 2:32:16Speaker 11: That's the third time.
- 2:32:18Speaker 4: Eh?
- 2:32:18Speaker 14: Third time of what?
- 2:32:20Speaker 11: It sounds like someone crying.
- 2:32:23Speaker 13: It's a touch of the sun you've got, Dad.
- 2:32:25Speaker 1: Turns to study his map.
- 2:32:27Speaker 11: I tell you I heard it. Heard it clear.
- 2:32:31Speaker 1: Reading from the map.
- 2:32:32Speaker 13: Tall tree, spyglass shoulder, bearing a point to the north
- 2:32:35Speaker 13: of north-north-east.
- 2:32:37Speaker 1: Turns to the men.
- 2:32:39Speaker 13: Well, lads, here we are. Scatter and look. Try every tree.
- 2:32:42Speaker 13: Keep an eye for some sign. Scatter with you.
- 2:32:45Speaker 1: The men spread about the mountain, looking at different trees,
- 2:32:48Speaker 1: to Jim, who has seated himself.
- 2:32:50Speaker 13: Come, lad.
- 2:32:51Speaker 4: I'm tired, sir.
- 2:32:53Speaker 15: Come.
- 2:32:53Speaker 13: It's no time to be tired, lad. We're getting near
- 2:32:55Speaker 13: to the treasure chest. Keep a sharp watch for whatever happens.
- 2:32:59Speaker 1: Dick suddenly cries out.
- 2:33:01Speaker 11: There, there, there it is again.
- 2:33:04Speaker 1: Comes running up to Silver.
- 2:33:06Speaker 11: Don't you hear it? Don't you?
- 2:33:08Speaker 1: As Silver stares at him.
- 2:33:10Speaker 11: It isn't the sun. I did hear it, I tell you.
- 2:33:14Speaker 1: Silver, with meaning to Jim.
- 2:33:17Speaker 13: Jim, did you hear anything?
- 2:33:19Speaker 4: No, sir.
- 2:33:20Speaker 11: Nonetheless, I did hear it. I know I did.
- 2:33:23Speaker 1: As Silver turns away, suddenly Morgan, upon the hillside, gives
- 2:33:28Speaker 1: a shout.
- 2:33:29Speaker 11: There, you see?
- 2:33:31Speaker 13: What is it, Tom?
- 2:33:32Speaker 1: He and all the men rush to where stands Morgan,
- 2:33:35Speaker 1: who is regarding a skeleton he has found.
- 2:33:38Speaker 13: What is it?
- 2:33:39Speaker 14: Look there.
- 2:33:40Speaker 1: The men all look and then draw back.
- 2:33:42Speaker 3: By the powers, a skeleton!
- 2:33:44Speaker 11: I know I heard something.
- 2:33:48Speaker 20: Now, who do you think that might be?
- 2:33:51Speaker 1: Morgan bends over.
- 2:33:53Speaker 14: He was a seaman. Leastways, this is good sea cloth.
- 2:33:56Speaker 3: You wouldn't think to find a bishop here, I reckon.
- 2:34:00Speaker 1: Silver, who has been studying the skeleton.
- 2:34:03Speaker 13: Aye, but what sort of a way is that for
- 2:34:04Speaker 13: bones to lie?
- 2:34:06Speaker 14: Hands pointing one way, feet to the other.
- 2:34:08Speaker 3: Like a blessed diver he is.
- 2:34:11Speaker 1: Taintin' nature.
- 2:34:12Speaker 14: It ain't not a fact.
- 2:34:14Speaker 13: Lads, I'm thinkin' if this could be one of Flint's
- 2:34:15Speaker 13: jokes now. Six came ashore when he buried the treasure.
- 2:34:20Speaker 13: None came back.
- 2:34:21Speaker 1: Could this fellow be one of them now?
- 2:34:25Speaker 13: Long bones and hair's been yellow.
- 2:34:27Speaker 11: Allardize.
- 2:34:28Speaker 13: Aye, that might be Allardize. You mind him, Mary?
- 2:34:31Speaker 3: Aye, that I do. He owed me money, he did,
- 2:34:34Speaker 3: and took my knife ashore with him.
- 2:34:36Speaker 14: Well, there's little enough about him now. Not a thing left.
- 2:34:38Speaker 14: Not a copper doit nor a backy box.
- 2:34:40Speaker 3: That's queer. Flint weren't a man to pick a seaman's pocket.
- 2:34:43Speaker 13: By thunder, that's right.
- 2:34:45Speaker 3: Don't look natural to me.
- 2:34:47Speaker 13: No, by gum it don't. Not natural and not nice.
- 2:34:50Speaker 13: Great guns, messmates. But if Flint was living now, this
- 2:34:53Speaker 13: would be a hot spot for you and me. Six
- 2:34:55Speaker 13: they were and six are we, and bones is what
- 2:34:56Speaker 13: they are now.
- 2:34:58Speaker 1: Dick starts up. There.
- 2:35:01Speaker 4: There it is again.
- 2:35:01Speaker 13: Avast there, Dick. Flint's dead.
- 2:35:04Speaker 3: Aye, I saw him with these here deadlights, Billy Bones
- 2:35:07Speaker 3: took me in, and there he lay with penny-pieces in
- 2:35:10Speaker 3: his eyes.
- 2:35:12Speaker 11: Aye, but if ever Sparrow walked, it would be Flint's.
- 2:35:16Speaker 3: Dear heart, but he died hard.
- 2:35:18Speaker 14: Rage and hollered from rum and sang fifteen men.
- 2:35:21Speaker 3: It was main hot, and the windy was open, and
- 2:35:23Speaker 3: I hear that old song coming out as clear as clear,
- 2:35:25Speaker 3: and the death-howl on the man already.
- 2:35:28Speaker 13: Come, stow that talk. Flint's dead, and he won't walk.
- 2:35:31Speaker 9: He's wise, who can say that?
- 2:35:33Speaker 13: As for this fellow here.
- 2:35:34Speaker 1: Points to skeleton.
- 2:35:36Speaker 13: I've taken a notion in my old numbskull. Flint hauled
- 2:35:39Speaker 13: him here and laid him down by compass.
- 2:35:41Speaker 14: What for?
- 2:35:42Speaker 13: For a pinter.
- 2:35:43Speaker 5: What?
- 2:35:44Speaker 1: There is general excitement among the men. Silver to Morgan,
- 2:35:48Speaker 1: to whom he hands compass.
- 2:35:50Speaker 13: Tom, here's the compass. Just take a bearing along the
- 2:35:52Speaker 13: lines of them bones. I'm thinking maybe them the signs
- 2:35:55Speaker 13: we're looking for, mates.
- 2:35:57Speaker 8: Well?
- 2:35:58Speaker 1: While the men wait eagerly.
- 2:36:01Speaker 14: East, southeast, and by east.
- 2:36:03Speaker 1: Silver reads from map and the.
- 2:36:06Speaker 13: Chart reads east southeast and by east it's one of
- 2:36:09Speaker 13: flint's jokes and no mistake there's our way lads to
- 2:36:11Speaker 13: flint's treasure up with you men up with you.
- 2:36:14Speaker 1: The men with cries start up dick suddenly wait wait
- 2:36:20Speaker 1: the men turn angrily you must hear it now you
- 2:36:23Speaker 1: must from the distance and in a weird voice there
- 2:36:27Speaker 1: is heard.
- 2:36:28Speaker 5: Fifty men on a dead man's chest, yo-ho-ho, and a
- 2:36:33Speaker 5: bottle of rum.
- 2:36:36Speaker 1: There is sudden consternation among the pirates as they stop, stunned.
- 2:36:40Speaker 3: Flint's voice.
- 2:36:42Speaker 14: I and his song.
- 2:36:44Speaker 11: I told you I heard it. I told you.
- 2:36:47Speaker 3: He were an ugly devil, were Flint, and that blew
- 2:36:49Speaker 3: in the face.
- 2:36:50Speaker 14: Blew, that's the word.
- 2:36:52Speaker 20: That was how the rum took him.
- 2:36:55Speaker 1: Silver, suddenly recovering.
- 2:36:57Speaker 13: Come, come, this won't do. Stand by to go about.
- 2:37:00Speaker 3: No, no long, John.
- 2:37:03Speaker 13: This is only someone skylarking, someone that's flesh and blood.
- 2:37:06Speaker 14: It was Flynn's way of singing.
- 2:37:08Speaker 3: Aye, and his tones, I'll swear to that.
- 2:37:10Speaker 13: I tell you it's flesh and blood, and I'll prove
- 2:37:12Speaker 13: it to you. I'm going up there. Those of you
- 2:37:14Speaker 13: who are not white-livered rats will come after me.
- 2:37:17Speaker 1: He starts up the mountain, and the others begin timidly
- 2:37:19Speaker 1: to follow.
- 2:37:21Speaker 4: Stop, oh, stop.
- 2:37:23Speaker 13: Now buy the power stick another word, and I'll run
- 2:37:25Speaker 13: you through.
- 2:37:25Speaker 2: Listen.
- 2:37:28Speaker 1: In terror, they all stop, and there comes from the
- 2:37:30Speaker 1: distance a wailing voice.
- 2:37:33Speaker 5: Darby McGraw! Darby McGraw! Darby McGraw!
- 2:37:39Speaker 3: Listen to that.
- 2:37:41Speaker 8: Aye.
- 2:37:41Speaker 5: Pitch off the room, Darby McGraw!
- 2:37:46Speaker 3: That fixes it. They was his last words.
- 2:37:49Speaker 13: No one on this island ever heard of Darby but
- 2:37:51Speaker 13: us here.
- 2:37:52Speaker 3: It's Flint, mates. I'm going back. Belay there.
- 2:37:55Speaker 13: I never feared Flint alive, and by the powers I'll
- 2:37:57Speaker 13: face him dead.
- 2:37:58Speaker 3: Belay there, John. Don't you cross the spirit.
- 2:38:01Speaker 15: Spirit?
- 2:38:02Speaker 13: Well, maybe. While you were in punching, if you'd listened,
- 2:38:04Speaker 13: you'd have noticed the echo.
- 2:38:06Speaker 3: Well?
- 2:38:07Speaker 13: Well, no man has ever seen a spirit with a shadow. Well, then,
- 2:38:10Speaker 13: what's he doing with an echo to him, eh? And
- 2:38:12Speaker 13: as for that voice, it may be like French, but
- 2:38:13Speaker 13: it's a deal more like another's.
- 2:38:15Speaker 8: Whose?
- 2:38:16Speaker 13: Ben Gunn's.
- 2:38:17Speaker 3: By the powers it is.
- 2:38:19Speaker 4: Ben Gunn?
- 2:38:21Speaker 13: Aye, Ben Gunn, that's who it is.
- 2:38:23Speaker 11: But Ben Gunn ain't alive, anyone, Flint.
- 2:38:26Speaker 3: Sure, nobody minds Ben Gunn, dead or alive.
- 2:38:30Speaker 11: Let's turn back, Silver.
- 2:38:32Speaker 13: Aye, back it is. No by thunder, no. I'm here
- 2:38:35Speaker 13: to get that stuff, and I'll not be beat of
- 2:38:37Speaker 13: man or double. There's seven hundred thousand pounds up there,
- 2:38:40Speaker 13: and when did every gentleman of fortune show his stern
- 2:38:42Speaker 13: to that much, and poor boozy old seaman and him dead?
- 2:38:45Speaker 13: So up with you. Here's our line for the Polestar
- 2:38:46Speaker 13: and the Jolly Dollars.
- 2:38:48Speaker 1: By this time he has reached the plateau. The minute
- 2:38:51Speaker 1: he sees it, he draws back.
- 2:38:53Speaker 13: Come on with you.
- 2:38:55Speaker 1: With a shout, the men all go up and shout
- 2:38:57Speaker 1: through following.
- 2:38:59Speaker 9: Come on, mate.
- 2:39:00Speaker 5: Up, lads, up.
- 2:39:02Speaker 11: All together now.
- 2:39:04Speaker 1: Morgan, who has gone on ahead, gives a shout, and
- 2:39:07Speaker 1: the men rush to him.
- 2:39:09Speaker 5: What?
- 2:39:10Speaker 13: It's here.
- 2:39:10Speaker 14: Flynn's treasure chest.
- 2:39:12Speaker 13: Shouts.
- 2:39:13Speaker 1: All dig.
- 2:39:14Speaker 13: The living rovers, that's right. In with you and dig.
- 2:39:17Speaker 13: Dig away.
- 2:39:18Speaker 14: Not a thing. Not a coin.
- 2:39:21Speaker 13: And do you think you'd find it on the top?
- 2:39:23Speaker 13: No dig, I tell you.
- 2:39:24Speaker 9: Dig.
- 2:39:26Speaker 14: A two-guinea piece.
- 2:39:27Speaker 13: Ah, what did I say? Flint buried it deep. You'll
- 2:39:29Speaker 13: find it.
- 2:39:30Speaker 20: A board with Walrus written on it.
- 2:39:34Speaker 13: Flint's ship. You're getting close to it now. Seven hundred
- 2:39:36Speaker 13: thousand pounds. Think of that, lads. Fortunes for all of us.
- 2:39:39Speaker 13: Seven hundred thousand pounds. All of Flint's treasure.
- 2:39:41Speaker 8: All of.
- 2:39:42Speaker 1: Stops and thunders loudly.
- 2:39:45Speaker 13: By all the powers.
- 2:39:46Speaker 4: What?
- 2:39:47Speaker 13: Gone. Aye, gone.
- 2:39:49Speaker 14: Not a blessed thing more.
- 2:39:51Speaker 9: Fooled.
- 2:39:52Speaker 11: Beaten. Tricked.
- 2:39:55Speaker 3: Aye, lad's tricked, and it's that old cripple there has
- 2:39:57Speaker 3: done it. That's why he's protected that boy.
- 2:40:01Speaker 13: Stand by for trouble, lad. It's you and me again,
- 2:40:03Speaker 13: the five.
- 2:40:04Speaker 3: Look at the face of him and you'll see it
- 2:40:05Speaker 3: written there. He's sold us, mate. Sold us.
- 2:40:08Speaker 20: Kill him.
- 2:40:09Speaker 1: Kill him. Gather forward.
- 2:40:13Speaker 15: Stop.
- 2:40:14Speaker 13: First one that puts a foot across that rim, I fire.
- 2:40:17Speaker 3: Then by thunder you'll have to fire. Here goes.
- 2:40:20Speaker 1: Shooting of Mary and other pirate.
- 2:40:23Speaker 20: My lads, we've got them!
- 2:40:26Speaker 1: Silver draws cutlass. Pirates start. Shots offstage.
- 2:40:30Speaker 15: Fall.
- 2:40:32Speaker 1: Silver, as they start to approach, draws cutlass.
- 2:40:35Speaker 13: Stand back or by the powers.
- 2:40:37Speaker 14: We've got you, Long John.
- 2:40:38Speaker 13: We're three to one.
- 2:40:39Speaker 14: Now then, mates, from all sides. All together, now!
- 2:40:43Speaker 1: Charge and shots are heard. GUNN, GRAY, AND DOCTOR RUSH IN.
- 2:40:48Speaker 7: JIM SAFE, SIR.
- 2:40:49Speaker 13: I'VE GOT THE LAD SAFE. BEN GUNN.
- 2:40:52Speaker 5: AYE, I'M BEN GUNN, I AM. HOW DO, MR. SILVER?
- 2:40:58Speaker 5: PRETTY WELL, THANK YOU.
- 2:41:00Speaker 12: SAYS YOU.
- 2:41:02Speaker 13: AND TO THINK IT'S YOU WHO'D STUN ME. BEN GUNN
- 2:41:04Speaker 13: BY GUM.
- 2:41:06Speaker 1: CURTAIN ACT FOUR SCENE THREE BEN GUNN'S CAVE JIM discovered,
- 2:41:13Speaker 1: and Ben Gunn packing golden bags.
- 2:41:16Speaker 4: English and French, Spanish and Portuguese, Louis and Georges, doubloons
- 2:41:20Speaker 4: and double guineas, moidores and sequins. Look, pictures of all
- 2:41:24Speaker 4: the kings in those strange oriental pieces with wisps of
- 2:41:27Speaker 4: string like spider's webs.
- 2:41:29Speaker 5: Ay, lad, there it is. Flint's treasure, all of it.
- 2:41:35Speaker 16: Three years, day by day, it took Ben Gunn to
- 2:41:39Speaker 16: fetch it here.
- 2:41:41Speaker 4: What a fortune to be taking home.
- 2:41:43Speaker 5: Oh, my, that's it, lad.
- 2:41:46Speaker 16: Oh, you'll be taking me with you, lad.
- 2:41:50Speaker 5: You'll not be leaving, Ben Gunn.
- 2:41:53Speaker 4: The squire has given his word.
- 2:41:55Speaker 8: Aye, that he has.
- 2:41:58Speaker 16: That night you came here from my boat and sent
- 2:42:01Speaker 16: me to him. Squire, says I, Jim Hawkins has sent
- 2:42:07Speaker 16: me and tells me as how you're all in a
- 2:42:10Speaker 16: clover hitch. Well, says I, let's bargain. Flint's treasure for
- 2:42:17Speaker 16: a passage home. Done, says he.
- 2:42:22Speaker 4: And you can rely on that, Ben Gunn.
- 2:42:24Speaker 8: Ahoy, shipmates, ahoy!
- 2:42:28Speaker 4: What's that?
- 2:42:29Speaker 1: Gunn rushes to entrance of cave.
- 2:42:32Speaker 5: Here, mates, and look, the ship. She's at anchor. They
- 2:42:38Speaker 5: got her safe.
- 2:42:41Speaker 1: Gun stays outside watching ship until curtain. Enter Smollett, Squire, Dr. Livesy, Gray, Joyce,
- 2:42:48Speaker 1: and Silver.
- 2:42:49Speaker 8: Jim, my lad, we found the Hispaniola just where you
- 2:42:52Speaker 8: left her. There she rides. And now, lads, it's home.
- 2:42:57Speaker 8: Home and fortune for us all.
- 2:42:59Speaker 13: Aye, aye, sir.
- 2:43:01Speaker 8: John Silver, you are a prodigious villain and monstrous imposter.
- 2:43:07Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
- 2:43:07Speaker 8: But because you stood by this boy... I am told
- 2:43:10Speaker 8: not to prosecute you. But dead men, sir, hang about
- 2:43:15Speaker 8: your neck like millstones.
- 2:43:17Speaker 13: Thank you kindly, sir.
- 2:43:18Speaker 8: I dare you to thank me. Stand back. And now, men,
- 2:43:22Speaker 8: to load, to load.
- 2:43:25Speaker 7: Wait, Jim Hawkins.
- 2:43:27Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 2:43:28Speaker 7: Jim, there is not a man here but recognizes that
- 2:43:31Speaker 7: if we have found this treasure and are taking it
- 2:43:34Speaker 7: safe home, we owe it all to you. I am
- 2:43:37Speaker 7: proud of you, lad. Gentlemen— I propose a salute to
- 2:43:40Speaker 7: Jim Hawkins, Officer of the Crown.
- 2:43:43Speaker 1: All saluting.
- 2:43:45Speaker 8: Jim Hawkins!
