- 0:14SPEAKER_03: Let's go.
- 0:15SPEAKER_03: And uh as we kick off this new series, uh Be the Church.
- 0:19SPEAKER_03: Be it.
- 0:20SPEAKER_03: Be the church.
- 0:20SPEAKER_03: But before we talk about Be the Church and the message you just we just taught on, and maybe just give us you can give us a teaser of what's coming up uh next Sunday.
- 0:27SPEAKER_03: But uh Family Fest October 25th.
- 0:30SPEAKER_03: Let's highlight a little bit.
- 0:31SPEAKER_03: We got over 200 people already purchasing tickets.
- 0:34SPEAKER_03: Going to be a great night.
- 0:35SPEAKER_03: Um well Jace Robinson showed a video this weekend.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I love um I love the idea of you know, we love bonfires.
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: So many of our team loves the fall.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: It's our favorite.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: And so we wanted to we're doing a men's bonfire, a college bonfire, high school bonfire.
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: Young adults bonfire, family bonfire.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: Here's a great idea.
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: Let's do it on one night.
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: Let's do it in one night.
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: Josh and uh Jess Frazy, they they do a great job hosting that.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: And so we're like, let's combine them all.
- 1:04SPEAKER_06: So we're actually not having fire, right?
- 1:07SPEAKER_06: No, there should be fires outside.
- 1:09SPEAKER_06: Oh yeah.
- 1:09SPEAKER_06: Just not like the normal fires.
- 1:11SPEAKER_06: There'll be containers.
- 1:13SPEAKER_02: Normal trees, but not as many of them.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: Oh, good.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:16SPEAKER_02: Food trucks.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: So we just obviously we we put some uh you know some steroids into it.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: We put some creatine into our bonfires.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: Make it extra strong.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: Extra strong.
- 1:28SPEAKER_03: It'll be a good night.
- 1:29SPEAKER_03: And so it'll be a good night.
- 1:30SPEAKER_03: That's for sure.
- 1:31SPEAKER_03: Looking forward to having a chance.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 1:36SPEAKER_06: You should probably put a camera on there Sunday mornings too.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: Oh man.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: Little split screen.
- 1:41SPEAKER_06: Usually if the girl if the girls are in town, then you really should put it on.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: Oh man.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: This is I feel like I'm free this weekend.
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: She's gonna be at a wedding, and I'm like, oh man, hinged.
- 1:51SPEAKER_06: Listen, that's it.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna get one of those posters, like you know, live look like pushers.
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: Is that something already?
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: Pastor Unhinged?
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I thought that was already something.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: That's not a good thing.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: It's not pastoral hinges.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: No.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: It's not unless it is unhinged.
- 2:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, is that book or it's probably terrible.
- 2:08SPEAKER_06: Whatever it is.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: I'm sure it would not be a healthy.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think there's some days that I could come out and be like, hey, good morning.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: It's like, I roll.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: I did something wrong.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: Time of day.
- 2:19SPEAKER_03: I mean, this is the podcast though where we get to hear all of the things that were in Kelly's head Sunday morning.
- 2:25SPEAKER_03: This is my life.
- 2:26SPEAKER_06: I get up at like 6 48.
- 2:29SPEAKER_06: Jamie, depending on the day, has been up for a while.
- 2:33SPEAKER_06: So he already has so many words all the time.
- 2:36SPEAKER_06: He'll be like, women talk, blah, blah, blah.
- 2:39SPEAKER_06: I'm like, dude, you have so many more words than I have.
- 2:41SPEAKER_03: I mean, you don't and your head.
- 2:43SPEAKER_06: And so 7 o'clock, don't talk to me.
- 2:47SPEAKER_06: Don't look at me.
- 2:48SPEAKER_06: Don't touch me.
- 2:48SPEAKER_06: Nothing.
- 2:49SPEAKER_06: He'll come in singing, flipping lights on, trying to hug me, and I just look at him like, why are you in my face right now?
- 2:56SPEAKER_06: Every day.
- 2:57SPEAKER_06: Every day.
- 2:58SPEAKER_06: Every day.
- 2:59SPEAKER_06: But he keeps coming back for some reason.
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: It's like a dog returning to its mom.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Oh my goodness.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: I felt like you were describing my world, Kelly, right there.
- 3:16SPEAKER_06: She's not a morning person.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Casey is not a morning person.
- 3:19SPEAKER_06: Don't just don't.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: No.
- 3:21SPEAKER_02: That is funny.
- 3:22SPEAKER_02: Things that don't get brought up pre pre-counseling, pre-marriage counseling.
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: That's a good question.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: Like who's the morning person?
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: Who's not?
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: Like that's a vital question that I asked.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: Because if you don't put parameters around that, you're going to think she's ignoring you.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: And then you just realize, oh, I don't need to do that.
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: I just need to leave her alone.
- 3:43SPEAKER_06: Did you ever think I was ignoring you?
- 3:45SPEAKER_06: I've never said that.
- 3:46SPEAKER_06: I mean, we've been married 29 years ago.
- 3:47SPEAKER_03: Have you guys always been?
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: You've always been a morning person?
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 3:50SPEAKER_06: You know what the worst is?
- 3:51SPEAKER_06: When your kids take after that.
- 3:53SPEAKER_06: Oh, so which kids are morning people?
- 3:54SPEAKER_06: Carson and Lila.
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: They're up early and Adam.
- 3:57SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: Gotcha.
- 3:59SPEAKER_06: They're just, they have a lot of words.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: Jake's not a morning person?
- 4:02SPEAKER_06: He doesn't like to talk.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: He doesn't mind getting up early.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: Okay, he just said I say Lila.
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: I don't I mean, I think a morning person is someone who doesn't mind getting up.
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: So like even if I say to players like, who were my morning soccer players?
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: Because they don't mind being at practice.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: They don't like it doesn't mean they're bubbly.
- 4:17SPEAKER_02: It's just they don't mind being there.
- 4:18SPEAKER_06: I think morning people are bouncy as soon as their feet hit the floor.
- 4:22SPEAKER_03: Jamie's bouncy?
- 4:24SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 4:24SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 4:25SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: He's excited about a new day.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: Excited about a new day.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: Like I always just my kids get mad when I say it, but I'm like, fine.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: You know, hopefully I come home today.
- 4:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: You know, hopefully I don't die.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: So, and this is your last interaction with me.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: So I say the same thing.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: That's emotional manipulation.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: It is.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: It is.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: And it's uh supposed to be.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: But I'm not disguising it.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: It is it's hopefully getting you to think like, uh, maybe I should change a couple things.
- 4:50SPEAKER_06: I'm like, I'm gonna see you later.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: But how do you change perfect, Sean?
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: How do you change perfect?
- 4:54SPEAKER_06: It's real hard.
- 4:55SPEAKER_06: It's really hard.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: I said on Sunday, like I'm really good at saying sorry because I'm the only one saying it, and I've probably heard it twice in my whole life.
- 5:02SPEAKER_06: Not a good idea.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: I hear it, but it's my voice.
- 5:11SPEAKER_02: It's my voice.
- 5:12SPEAKER_05: Wait, what?
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: If I hear sorry, I'm like, it's my voice.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: It's never somebody.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: You know why?
- 5:18SPEAKER_06: Because you talk more.
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: And I'm sorry.
- 5:22SPEAKER_06: If you kept the words in your head, you would not say that.
- 5:26SPEAKER_03: Hey, just so you know, as we start this B Church series, discipleship is obviously uh key to it.
- 5:31SPEAKER_03: And so um for those of us are in life groups that are called sermon review, you know this.
- 5:36SPEAKER_03: But if you go to the the LCC app and you click on life groups, there's a few tabs there.
- 5:41SPEAKER_03: One of them is called the SIR questions, sermon and review questions.
- 5:46SPEAKER_03: And they're good even if you just do them by yourself.
- 5:48SPEAKER_03: And so we want to encourage you to do those so it'll help you get through.
- 5:51SPEAKER_03: Pastor's message Monday through Friday, not just on Sunday.
- 5:55SPEAKER_03: So here's my opening question for this week.
- 5:57SPEAKER_03: All right, here it is.
- 5:58SPEAKER_03: This one's easy, it shouldn't be that hard.
- 6:00SPEAKER_03: And um, you know, we're gonna be talking about it during the week, as too in small groups, but uh what made you laugh this week?
- 6:06SPEAKER_03: What made you laugh this week?
- 6:09SPEAKER_03: What made you laugh this week?
- 6:11SPEAKER_03: Like uh as if like I'm like on my own?
- 6:13SPEAKER_03: Just no, just month just during the week.
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: You know, like what what this week?
- 6:18SPEAKER_03: It could have been last week too, since there's a little more time, but what made you laugh?
- 6:22SPEAKER_03: What were you doing and just made you laugh?
- 6:26SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
- 6:27SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: I mean I I I laugh almost every day at practice or being around my team just because I'm around high school boys, and me, Mike, and uh Ray are laughing about something always that they're doing or they're saying or how they how they are.
- 6:47SPEAKER_02: So we're we're always it's it's comical to me.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: Uh we we talk a lot about you know generations and all that, and we have a referee that refed me when I was in high school, and he's still refing today.
- 6:58SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: And so and uh he's older or younger than Pastor Mike?
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: I mean, he's probably younger, but he's uh um, but yeah, he I I don't know.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: I mean he's you gotta be in pretty good shape, still be referee.
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so that's impressive.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: Um but he's just very inconsistent.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: Some days he's you know my best friend, and some days he's he can't stand me.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: So last night was uh he kind of yeah, yeah.
- 7:26SPEAKER_06: Oh, he liked to give lectures.
- 7:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he he's he's yeah, he's getting older, and so it's like everything's an explanation.
- 7:32SPEAKER_04: But yeah.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: So he's probably reffed some of my biggest games, but anyway, so we we just were laughing because me and Mike played against each other in high school, and so uh we remember him and all that kind of stuff.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: You know, Mike Darnell.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: So um Yeah, this Mike isn't gonna run up.
- 7:48SPEAKER_06: Uh the twins make us laugh all the time.
- 7:50SPEAKER_06: But what are they which one just said uh Yeah, Maya says some funny.
- 7:55SPEAKER_06: Without saying, I was like, how do they even know that?
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: It was an old person saying the my favorite though from this week is you know, we played Waterloo and someone from the church was there and uh wearing Waterloo stuff and said hi to the twins, and the twins are like, I can't talk to you and bulldog stuff.
- 8:10SPEAKER_06: They said we don't talk to bulldogs.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: And then she's like, Well, I go to your church, and she's like, that don't matter.
- 8:15SPEAKER_03: That don't matter.
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: You're in yellow.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: My dad's warned me about people.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: No, I every day, you know, I take the twins to school.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: There's always something that that is laugh-worthy for sure.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: From the songs they pick to the things they say.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: It's just it's it's comical.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: And especially on Wednesdays, because I'll be like praying for them, and and before they get out of the car, we pray, and then I say, like today I said, and God be with them on home day and throws them off.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: They're like, what?
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: It's Wednesday, girls, it's hump day.
- 8:49SPEAKER_03: That's one of my favorite commercials.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: It's big commercial.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: I just said it together the other people.
- 8:57SPEAKER_02: I know you can hear me.
- 8:58SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: I mean, we're so glad they brought this commercial back.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:04SPEAKER_04: Oh, that's so funny.
- 9:06SPEAKER_03: It's hilarious.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: Okay, so before we dive into whatever you want to talk about in regards to this message, tell us first why this series, Be the Church.
- 9:13SPEAKER_03: Why are we in a series right now called Be the Church?
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, for me, it's um, you know, when I meet with people, they'll you know, they'll say something like, uh, I love Sundays, or I love you as a communicator, and I'll always say, like what?
- 9:29SPEAKER_02: What do you what do you love?
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: And uh I think a majority of the time it's the practicality.
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: I know what what applies to me.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: And so for me, you know, spending the fall with going like, okay, I go to church, um I see a church building.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: Well, what does it mean to be the church?
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: Like, what does it mean to take it away from this hour, two-hour service or this Wednesday night that I'm in a small group?
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: What does it look like to live outside of this space that was created for gathering?
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: And it's important.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: I think the church has a tendency to say, like, oh, this is really good, so this is bad.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: And it's like, no, when you read Acts 2, he talked about temple, he talked about fellowship, he talked about sharing meals together, he talked about taking communion together.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: So it's and I think that happened like when the small small group cultures like, oh, we're a small group church, and it's like, well, can't we be both?
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: You know, and so um understanding like the practicality of being the church, like not something we attend, but something we are.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: And um, it's the vehicle that I think all of us go, wow, this is crazy.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: This is a vehicle that that uh God uses, you know, people and their story to to continue the church on.
- 10:43SPEAKER_02: And so having practical conversations of like what does it look like to be this um, you know, outside of you know this building.
- 10:51SPEAKER_03: It's good.
- 10:51SPEAKER_03: It's good.
- 10:52SPEAKER_03: All right, where do you want to start, Kelly?
- 10:54SPEAKER_03: Where do you want to start in uh sharing us uh your thoughts on Pastor's Sermon on Side?
- 10:58SPEAKER_03: The most notes in the most notes over there.
- 11:00SPEAKER_06: I know, but here's the problem.
- 11:02SPEAKER_06: I can't read my own handwriting.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: That is a problem.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: How do you say you're almost 50 without saying you're almost 50?
- 11:09SPEAKER_06: I have terrible handwriting.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: I can kick it off with a quote.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: You want me to it's cursive too?
- 11:13SPEAKER_06: Well, it depends.
- 11:15SPEAKER_03: Just trust me, Kelly.
- 11:16SPEAKER_03: Trust me.
- 11:17SPEAKER_06: Okay, Sean.
- 11:18SPEAKER_03: All right, you said this in the in the message.
- 11:20SPEAKER_03: It's not what you do occasionally, it's what you do consistently.
- 11:24SPEAKER_03: It's not what you do occasionally, which I really like that quote.
- 11:27SPEAKER_03: It's what you do consistently.
- 11:28SPEAKER_03: Can you expand expand on that for us a little bit?
- 11:32SPEAKER_06: Read the word.
- 11:35SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean I think there's so many trends, you guys, of like life and and quick fixes and you know, it hasn't changed.
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: You want to lose weight, eat better.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: Move.
- 11:51SPEAKER_02: You know, it's not it's not new.
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: You can take a shot, you can take a pill, and it's gonna help.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: But if you if you want to do something consistently, then eat right consistently and and uh put your body to the test consistently.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: And you do that, you're gonna see changes.
- 12:06SPEAKER_02: And so it's the same spiritually.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: Like I think people just trend, oh, I haven't read my Bible in a long time.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: Well, why?
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: You're being inconsistent with it, but you want God to you know show up on your behalf and he's like, I'm trying, but we need to we need to meet, you know, we need to get together and we need to consistently do that.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: And so we understand it from a relationship standpoint, like we get it.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: I believe God is the the God that when you when you um have time away from him and you get back to reading, it's like the friend you you know, you pick up where you left off last time.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: Like I believe he's that, but he still wants consistency in a relationship with us, and and so for us to meet consistently, man, I that's what I liked about Micah.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: Like, he hey, here's a practical thing I do every day.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: I read a psalm, I read a proverbs, and you know, I read something Jesus said, you know, and it's like, how do you consistently do that?
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: And next thing you know, you're gonna find yourself quoting those things um to people, and and that's obviously where what the word says, right?
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: If you if you uh read the word, it's eventually gonna come out.
- 13:12SPEAKER_02: So that to me is what consistently means.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: And if we're honest, we're inconsistent.
- 13:17SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: You know, so how do we consistently do those things?
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: So I think too is that you have um it's back to that is it's sometimes people have a tendency to think, I well, I gotta do this back to I gotta lose weight, so I'm gonna and they do these, you know, extreme things, whatever.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: I I I found it's that um some of the most significant things in your life come out of the small consistencies that you just do every day, you just stick to.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: Because the small the small things become achievable.
- 13:55unknown: Uh-huh.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: And so you you you you just keep at it, you keep at it, and then all of a sudden you find yourself having significant outcome from it.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: I think spiritually it's the same thing, is that what you do every day, it's a reading of a psalm, reading a proverb, um, reading, you know, something out of the New Testament, just doing that every day, and all of a sudden then you do find yourself something, a circumstance pops up in your what are you doing?
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: You're quoting a scripture or you're responding to it through something that you've read, maybe prayed out of the scriptures.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: And I think that's where a lot of times a lot of people um the challenge for them is not understanding that.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: It's it's what the Bible calls disciplines, right?
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: It's discipline.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Hebrews said all discipline is painful for a season.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: It's changing that um rhythm in your life that can become challenging, but it's rewarding if you're willing to do it.
- 14:54SPEAKER_03: That's really good.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: Well, we love comfort, right?
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: So comfort comfort is uh you know, like comfort food or comfort like we let like the we don't want our world to be disrupted.
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: And so like to me it's like man, there's some learned things in there that you have to learn to to do those things.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: And whether that's uh, you know, however long it takes your mind, it depends on how you know how frustrated are you at looking that way or acting that way, or you know, my Friday morning group, one of the compliments was like, Man, whoever put this uh we're going through a discipleship course, and we're all on the same page, we're all we're all doing it a daily devotion, and and for some guys that was the hard part, like finding and knowing something, and now all of a sudden there is something that that that they know ten, eight to the other ten guys are are doing.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: So it's like, man, not only am I doing it, but we're gonna talk about it on Fridays, and I'm I know other guys are doing it.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: And it's like, man, you consistently do that, and then we talk about it, it's gonna change.
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's gonna change the way you live, it's gonna change your perspective, and and getting guys to do it is pretty awesome.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: Totally agree.
- 16:09SPEAKER_03: What do you got for us, Kelly?
- 16:12SPEAKER_06: Um, I just think that discipline probably is one of the hardest things that well in our American not probably not even American, just our human mind.
- 16:21SPEAKER_06: Like um Jamie said Oh, he he said humans are messed up.
- 16:30SPEAKER_06: That's what you said.
- 16:31SPEAKER_06: But I wrote, there is evil in the heart of every human, which someone can tell me where it's in scripture.
- 16:36SPEAKER_06: I don't can't quote you where you're at, but and I think it's something we have to remember or remind ourselves that Paul said, I discipline my body, I have to discipline myself.
- 16:46SPEAKER_06: So I think a lot of um maybe American Christianity, we've allowed the pastors, quote unquote pastors, to teach us, which is fine.
- 16:57SPEAKER_06: That is one of the jobs that that we're here for, but also we have to discipline ourselves and we forget that part.
- 17:03SPEAKER_06: So if I I actually want to be in shape and I'm not.
- 17:08SPEAKER_06: So Jamie set up this gym in our in our uh garage.
- 17:12SPEAKER_06: So it's literally right outside of my garage, right?
- 17:15SPEAKER_06: Do you know how many times I've been out there?
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: Two.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: Two and then out there, yeah.
- 17:18SPEAKER_06: Two, yeah.
- 17:19SPEAKER_06: But I really want I need I know I need to like work on my muscle tone because I'm just getting older and it's gonna be better for my body.
- 17:26SPEAKER_06: But I am terrible at discipline of working out.
- 17:30SPEAKER_06: I'm not terrible at sitting on my porch every morning with coffee and my Bible.
- 17:35SPEAKER_06: Sure.
- 17:35SPEAKER_06: So but I could be better at it.
- 17:38SPEAKER_06: So it's like what the the discipline aspect is really hard for people.
- 17:42SPEAKER_06: And if we real once we realize like the Bible is the literal living word of God, and it transforms that's what's gonna transform our soul.
- 17:50SPEAKER_06: Not not that coming to church can't transform your soul or listening to podcasts, like it can't, but like this is actually what is gonna transform us.
- 17:58SPEAKER_06: And once you can't live without it, and then you'll see.
- 18:01SPEAKER_06: But I think too, people can be um like I'm not smart enough, I don't know enough.
- 18:07SPEAKER_06: I everybody else around me is smarter about the Bible, but how did they get smarter?
- 18:11SPEAKER_06: They started small, they started being consistent, they started uh reading the word, memorizing it, figuring out what it means, how it fits together, all that stuff.
- 18:20SPEAKER_06: So your confidence grows once you're in the word more, and then like you said, it comes out.
- 18:25SPEAKER_03: Aaron Powell Well, just to go back to like, you know, Sunday morning is important, but it has a pl has its place, right?
- 18:31SPEAKER_03: And so, like, you know, I I look at Sunday mornings this way.
- 18:34SPEAKER_03: It's and oftentimes I think Pastor Jamie is doing this for all of us, whether we're we have never given our life to Jesus or or whoever's speaking on that Sunday morning, you know, we've never given our lives to Jesus, or we've been a Christian for 50 years, you know what I mean, and would consider ourselves to be a mature Christian.
- 18:49SPEAKER_03: Like, Sunday morning is literally like a match.
- 18:52SPEAKER_03: And we're striking something and we're igniting it.
- 18:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:55SPEAKER_03: We're igniting something to go the next place.
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: Well, if you don't ever do anything with that match, what's gonna happen?
- 19:02SPEAKER_03: It's gonna blow out.
- 19:03SPEAKER_03: And then you're gonna come.
- 19:04SPEAKER_03: So some of us literally as Christians, we're just we're literally lighting a match every Sunday, and we're wondering by Thursday or Friday or Wednesday why we're so frustrated.
- 19:12SPEAKER_03: And that's because we're not taking any kind of substance from the message or whatever ourselves and laying.
- 19:17SPEAKER_03: So it'd be like, and when I light a match, the whole purpose is to create a fire that continues to burn, right?
- 19:22SPEAKER_03: I wanna I'm gonna do something with it.
- 19:24SPEAKER_03: It's just igniting something, it's giving me something.
- 19:26SPEAKER_03: So what are the logs?
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: What are the larger substances that we're putting on that to get that to grow?
- 19:31SPEAKER_03: Well, that's why we need to wake up and read our Bibles in the morning, it's why we need to gather with other people and talk about scriptures, it's why we need all of these elements, you know, not just one one of them.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: And so and I've found like the the things that you loathe maybe to do in the beginning, um at some point it turns to things that you uh long to do.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: Like you you appreciate like I I mean like I I I I love early mornings because um nobody else is up and um it's such a a sweet time that when I don't have it, you know, what whether it's been a long day before and I I just like I need rest, it's different.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: And so like I think for a lot of people, the comparison mine, what she's just talking about, was we compare life so much.
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: We're the only species that do this, animals don't do this, you know, we're the only ones that are confused by it.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: Like when when I'm left to decide, I usually compare.
- 20:33SPEAKER_02: And in comparison, I I usually bring shame and guilt on my life because I can't be as good as you.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: How did you get that way?
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: And we don't we don't look about the behind the scenes stuff, but like if we really think through like the the core things that we need to do, it will make us better.
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: And that has to, that has to at some point outweigh the sacrifice of what is happening and what I need to do.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: So at some point, you have to you have to not stand anymore that you're you're flabby or you're fat.
- 21:06SPEAKER_02: Like at some point that has to bother you so much that you're like, I'm willing to do whatever.
- 21:11SPEAKER_02: And at some point that's gonna turn into, man, I actually love this.
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: I actually see the benefit of this.
- 21:20SPEAKER_02: But I think we live in a society that wants quick fixes.
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: And we want it, we want quick, we want like why why is this not happening yet?
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: And and uh, but we don't understand the confidence that comes from knowing the Lord.
- 21:34SPEAKER_02: Because we we we separate arrogance and confidence, and they should be separated, but we don't know the difference.
- 21:41SPEAKER_02: And it's like I can be confident in who I am in the Lord, and that might appear to be arrogant to you.
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: Um, but it has not no, it's I'm confident because of who God is, not because of what I'm doing.
- 21:54SPEAKER_02: And we put so much into that, like doing and and being, and it's like man.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: And if who I am, like as the church, like being the church, being the body, like that turns into, and it should change what I do.
- 22:10SPEAKER_02: We've reversed that and say, if I do, then I can be.
- 22:14SPEAKER_02: Nope, it's gotta be be and then do.
- 22:18SPEAKER_02: Um, and that's the overflow.
- 22:19SPEAKER_06: I think that's why people too that that's that, like I don't know scripture enough.
- 22:23SPEAKER_06: I can't witness to people, or I can't tell my story, or I can't do this or that.
- 22:28SPEAKER_06: But it's like, yeah, because you're not being enough.
- 22:30SPEAKER_06: And being able to say why not be with the Lord.
- 22:34SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 22:34SPEAKER_02: Like saying why can't you?
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you can't, and then anybody can't, but no one's been challenged that way, right?
- 22:40SPEAKER_02: I think a lot of people get offended by the you know, uh the the the thought process of like being challenged.
- 22:47SPEAKER_02: Like, who are you to challenge me?
- 22:48SPEAKER_02: Like, you know what I mean?
- 22:49SPEAKER_06: Like it's like for so much it's because church culture for so many years has been the pastor has to do it for me.
- 22:58SPEAKER_03: Consumer.
- 22:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:00SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 23:00SPEAKER_06: Oh, but also like I think like 80s, 90s, early 2000s.
- 23:04SPEAKER_06: Like, think about all the times.
- 23:05SPEAKER_06: Like, if you're gonna do a hospital visit or if you're gonna do it's like the pastor has to be the one.
- 23:10SPEAKER_06: Like, I just literally this last weekend we were with our girls and one of them was talking about something, and she's like, Yeah, I need to have dad come pray over that.
- 23:19SPEAKER_06: And I said, You pray over that.
- 23:20SPEAKER_06: Wow, you don't need your dad to do that, you do it.
- 23:24SPEAKER_06: It's like for whatever reason, this mindset that the pastor has to do the job, and it's like, no, we are Christian, like we are called to be the church.
- 23:31SPEAKER_06: We're all ministers, we're all ministers, like you don't have to do it vocationally, you are called to the church.
- 23:36SPEAKER_06: We get the opportunity to lead this church, right?
- 23:39SPEAKER_06: I think once people like buy into that, and then you will see a lot change.
- 23:46SPEAKER_06: Like, I've had conversations with a few women on our Wednesday night group, and I know I made fun of myself about this a few weeks ago on the podcast about praying in public, but then it just happened again like two weeks ago.
- 23:58SPEAKER_06: Um, we were all praying and someone didn't want to.
- 24:01SPEAKER_06: And I was like, okay, I'll let you slide this time, but next time you're praying out loud.
- 24:04SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 24:05SPEAKER_06: And this individual is older than me, has been around for a while, and I was kind of like taken back by the fact by that she didn't want to pray out loud.
- 24:12SPEAKER_06: And I was like, why?
- 24:14SPEAKER_06: What are you afraid of?
- 24:15SPEAKER_06: It's like I feel like our walk with the Lord should be mature, where if someone asks you to pray, you just pray.
- 24:22SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 24:22SPEAKER_06: I'm not because there's no word like you can't mess it up really, you know.
- 24:26SPEAKER_06: But a lady that insecurity, right?
- 24:29SPEAKER_03: It's yeah, definitely for sure.
- 24:30SPEAKER_03: I'd lay like that in my small group for a long season.
- 24:32SPEAKER_03: And so for a season, I just said at the end, you're gonna say you say amen.
- 24:36SPEAKER_03: Oh, I had her start doing that.
- 24:38SPEAKER_03: Amen.
- 24:39SPEAKER_03: And then we finally worked her up to where she was like the starter.
- 24:43SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
- 24:43SPEAKER_03: Like and so, but yeah, yeah, it's giving people the space.
- 24:46SPEAKER_03: It's cool that you did that.
- 24:47SPEAKER_03: That's really cool.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: Well, it's it's that.
- 24:49SPEAKER_02: It's the confidence to go and like, oh, why why don't I pray?
- 24:52SPEAKER_02: Like, I mean, it would be easy to be like, hey, you do it.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: I mean, who wouldn't like who wouldn't want that?
- 24:58SPEAKER_03: Is it is it because of the comparison culture?
- 25:01SPEAKER_03: You can do it better than I can do it, so why should I do it?
- 25:03SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna let you do it or not.
- 25:05SPEAKER_02: I think I think pastors have contributed to it.
- 25:08SPEAKER_02: You know, the f the wanting to be needed, yeah, wanting to be, you know, and it's impossible to do that.
- 25:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, it's it is literally impossible.
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: You're gonna have a church of a hundred uh at the end of your life.
- 25:21SPEAKER_06: Which I mean would be fine if you want to pastor a hundred people and no, I'm not even saying that.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: I'm saying you're at a hundred because you don't know how to multiply yourself.
- 25:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you don't.
- 25:29SPEAKER_02: You know, you're doing it all.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: Oh, I see.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: You can probably manage it with a group of a hundred and uh yes people, you know what I mean?
- 25:36SPEAKER_02: But like it's if you're 75 and you and you're leading a church of a hundred and you have no idea what's gonna happen when you pass away, that's wrong.
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: It's biblically wrong.
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: And I think America's full of those.
- 25:49SPEAKER_02: So it's not just that people take a mindset that you're the pastor, so you do it.
- 25:54SPEAKER_02: I think I think we're coming away from that a little bit.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: I think there's been another side of that too, that we'll we'll own, right?
- 26:00SPEAKER_02: That there have been pastors that they like that.
- 26:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: As Pastor Mike says, like, as the older you get, you're looking for purpose.
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: Well, they found their purpose.
- 26:08SPEAKER_02: So if someone says, like, Pastor, you went from 500 to 100, they're satisfied because they can handle that.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:14SPEAKER_02: The 500 is what they can handle.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:16SPEAKER_02: You know, because now I got to pour into other people because I just cannot do that.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: I'll never forget being at a youth thing and and them saying, uh, what is your capacity to lead in youth ministry?
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: And the whole comment was, like, I know some of you think you can have a youth group of 300 or a youth group of 600, but you don't have the capacity.
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: And here's how you know whether you have capacity, how much are you going to give a give it away?
- 26:41SPEAKER_02: Some of you, you're not giving any of it away.
- 26:43SPEAKER_02: And so your capacity you may think is 600, but it's probably only 50 because you can't give it away.
- 26:49SPEAKER_06: And uh I don't know why we think we could pastor more than twelve.
- 26:53SPEAKER_06: Jesus didn't.
- 26:54SPEAKER_06: You know what I mean?
- 26:55SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, but he sent them out two by two.
- 26:59SPEAKER_02: He can handle the crowd.
- 27:00SPEAKER_06: Yeah, but he was only really pouring into twelve.
- 27:03SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 27:03SPEAKER_03: And really three.
- 27:06SPEAKER_03: Well, it's because he understood like there's multiplication, right?
- 27:09SPEAKER_03: There's a there's gonna be a season where I'm not gonna be here.
- 27:11SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and he knew uh the avenue obviously is humans to spread the church.
- 27:16SPEAKER_02: I mean, you look at a statistical standpoint, Jesus was by the American public standard, was probably not a great pastor.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: Well, he was a failure by our metrics.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: Well, but because I mean he he is and he isn't, right?
- 27:29SPEAKER_02: Because in the end, you know what I mean?
- 27:32SPEAKER_02: Like in the end We're still following him.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: We're still following him with those 12.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: But like in this moment, just like everything, right?
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: Would you thought he was losing because he didn't respond when people said he should have responded?
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: Answer the question.
- 27:46SPEAKER_02: Like you you were quiet, right?
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: And so there's even the disciples were like, Well, what are you doing?
- 27:51SPEAKER_02: Like you can come down from there.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: Could you see Jesus showing up at a current contemporary pastor's conference and you'd ask the infamous questions, how many people you got in your church?
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: Uh 12.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 28:05SPEAKER_05: And my best friend betrayed me.
- 28:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: One of them, I mean, I felt like he probably would have said the the 5,000.
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: No, but only were men.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: Only were men.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: And uh the service went so long I had to feed him.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: I mean, yeah, that's true.
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: Or look at Paul, you know, like he preached so long that somebody fell asleep.
- 28:28SPEAKER_02: I mean, I still love that.
- 28:30SPEAKER_02: That is good, yeah.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: He preached so long, someone was in the window and fell, and he went down.
- 28:36SPEAKER_02: And then the best part, he went down, prayed for him, and he was healed, and Paul continued to preach.
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: Gotta get to point four.
- 28:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: I've been in one of those services.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: Not here.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: Not here.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: Not here.
- 28:53SPEAKER_02: I mean, speaking of, like, how do you I mean one of my questions is have we created more church consumers than disciples, and what's the difference?
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: I think in if you I'm not you're not talking about life community church.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: No.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: You're just saying in the church in general.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: I think we have, if you look back historically, especially over the last probably 30, 40 years, we've created, we've fed this consumer element more than we've, you know, discouraged it.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: And but I think I at least what I see, I think we're starting to turn the corner a little bit and realizing because we've felt so much um, especially with the younger next younger generation of leaders coming, if they've felt the um maybe the negative aspects of that.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: I think what it some of it it's you know um expectations that people have on leaders and pastors, and that I think is has been um unsubstantiated expectations maybe.
- 30:06SPEAKER_03: As a Christian, just uh you know add to your question, but uh to as a Christian that showing up to church every Sunday, how do I know if I'm more of a consumer or a disciple?
- 30:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: I mean I've always views it, viewed it from uh, you know, you can tell in your speech and then how you view the place.
- 30:24SPEAKER_02: If if you're coming in and your first thought is, I didn't get anything from that, then I'm a consumer.
- 30:30SPEAKER_02: That's good.
- 30:30SPEAKER_02: Or if I come in and say, This is my church and uh I see the need, am I contributing to the need or am I bringing a solution to the need?
- 30:41SPEAKER_02: I heard an illustration of a of a guy who was sitting and uh uh he was in a restaurant and uh the guy uh a guy came by that was also eating the restaurant and he said to the you know individual, like, hey, can you take my plate for me?
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: I'm done.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: And uh the guy goes, I don't I don't work here.
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: Like I'm I'm eating just like you are, I'm paying a meal just like you are.
- 31:04SPEAKER_02: And uh the guy that was sitting there was offended and because he wanted him to take his stuff and and the whole idea mindset is is like from an owner standpoint, are we owning, like taking responsibility for what we're a part of?
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: Well, in every restaurant you go in, you know, it's someone else's restaurant and you're just the consumer, or every store you go into, you're just the consumer.
- 31:29SPEAKER_02: So it's like what am I what am I bringing into church that has that mindset?
- 31:34SPEAKER_02: And that's why I said, even on Sunday, is this a club or is it a church?
- 31:38SPEAKER_02: If it's a club, then I'm gonna pay a due, I'm gonna, you know, come in, come out.
- 31:43SPEAKER_02: I might talk about it in in public, like, oh, I go to that club and this is what I get out of it.
- 31:49SPEAKER_02: But I'm not contributing to it.
- 31:51SPEAKER_02: I'm just I'm just part of it.
- 31:54SPEAKER_03: That's good.
- 31:55SPEAKER_03: That's really good.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: I heard this quote.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: Um it's a disciples, the difference between a disciple and a consumer.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: Disciples want to be taught how to pray.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: Their approach is teach me how to how to pray.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: How can I walk closer with Jesus or something?
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: That's their approach.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: And consumers are um more focused on their opinions, giving their opinions.
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: Or they want their opinions to be heard.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: And I I found that to be very true.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: Is that when people come and they they want to give you their opinions and think that their opinions should have a preeminent place and priority in my life, I'm like, uh I learned years ago that you have to be careful of of people that want you here's my hoop, jump through it.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: Guess what?
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: There's a never-ending source of hoops and you'll never be able to jump through enough of them.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: And so I learned real quickly and with some scars added to it, is that I'm not gonna jump through people's hoops.
- 33:04SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: You know, I'm just not gonna do that.
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: Because there's too many other people that are that, hey, how can I grow?
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: How can I walk closer to with Jesus?
- 33:16SPEAKER_00: What what can I do?
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: And I think the other thing too is people coming that um that want to engage their life, they want to give from their life into what God is doing versus the well, I didn't like that song or I didn't like that passage or whatever.
- 33:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:38SPEAKER_02: I mean, like this this weekend, I really use Luke twenty Luke 923, and it's a familiar passage.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: It's the it's the passage where Jesus invites, you know, despite whatever we've done and and all that.
- 33:52SPEAKER_02: But the NLT says it this way, is if you, any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily and follow me.
- 34:01SPEAKER_02: And so, like, from from that scripture, um, I kind of come to this conclusion of like, where where have we as the American church uh drawn to comfort more than we have taking up our cross or giving up our own way?
- 34:18SPEAKER_02: And what does that actually look like?
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: I would say I have thoughts on that, but like what does it actually look like to give up your own way, to take your cross daily?
- 34:28SPEAKER_02: And then the follow me part, once you get through the first two, is the easy part, right?
- 34:32SPEAKER_02: Following him was was easy, it's the first two.
- 34:36SPEAKER_02: Like I because I love I mean, every disciple loved following Jesus because of what they were experiencing.
- 34:42SPEAKER_02: And it's like we can experience that, but it's the first two.
- 34:45SPEAKER_02: How do you give up your own way and then take your crowd?
- 34:50SPEAKER_02: Well, comfort plays a a factor in that for the American Christian because we put so much stock in comfort and giving up my own way isn't comfortable.
- 35:01SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 35:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, I mean, I think one of the things is time, giving up your time.
- 35:07SPEAKER_03: Like, I mean, I think that like do you uh navigate from a place every I mean, it if you're not if you're not starting your day like you said, Kelly, in the morning, if you're not starting your day with a conversation with Jesus, well then how in the world are you gonna do anything with for him throughout the day?
- 35:22SPEAKER_03: Like if your mindset's first, I gotta go to grocery shopping, I got kids to school, I've got to get to my job, I've gotta get this done, I've got to get that done, I've got to get this done.
- 35:31SPEAKER_03: Now, all those things are good.
- 35:32SPEAKER_03: You should be doing all those things, but if you started your day like, hey, today, Lord, you know the list that I have.
- 35:38SPEAKER_03: I need to spend 15, 20 minutes, get myself right, like in regards mentally, like so that when I'm doing all these things, I'm also ministering.
- 35:45SPEAKER_03: I'm also being a minister of the gospel, you know.
- 35:47SPEAKER_03: And if we s n you know, don't do that, then how do we how it's kind of what you said to staffing me this morning in regards to like how do I how am I navigating according to the Holy Spirit today versus navigating towards Sean's to-do list and calendar list and and so my time is like I'm gonna give all of it, even that means I'm doesn't mean I'm gonna sit at home all day and just turn on work music, you know.
- 36:10SPEAKER_03: That's not the the goal, but you know, kind of thing.
- 36:13SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 36:14SPEAKER_06: And so am I being the church in every aspect of my life.
- 36:18SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 36:18SPEAKER_03: Well, when you say deny, like I just think like time.
- 36:21SPEAKER_03: Like, am I willing to like like I I'm I'm a very scheduled out person, you know, and like so for me, like it's like oh, okay, like I need to pay attention to what's going on around so that I can pause and go.
- 36:33SPEAKER_03: Because most of the time the Lord's gonna bring something up, and it's not necessarily that it's gonna go along with my schedule, but it's gonna be uh it's gonna change what's happening.
- 36:43SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
- 36:43SPEAKER_03: It's gonna adjust.
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: And so I've got to have the flexibility to say, okay, that's the Holy Spirit, I'm moving in this direction now.
- 36:49SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
- 36:49SPEAKER_06: And so I think was your last point.
- 36:51SPEAKER_06: Oh yeah.
- 36:52SPEAKER_06: Am I being obedient?
- 36:54SPEAKER_06: Was your last point on obedience?
- 36:56SPEAKER_06: Uh I wrote that down.
- 36:57SPEAKER_03: I think the fourth was something it had to do with humility and pride.
- 37:01SPEAKER_06: Oh, okay.
- 37:01SPEAKER_06: So what was point three?
- 37:02SPEAKER_03: Is it on obedience?
- 37:03SPEAKER_03: I think it was more so uh serve from grace.
- 37:07SPEAKER_06: Huh.
- 37:07SPEAKER_06: Interesting.
- 37:09SPEAKER_06: Well, maybe that was just for me.
- 37:10SPEAKER_06: Am I being obedient?
- 37:11SPEAKER_06: Maybe the answer is no.
- 37:13unknown: Yeah.
- 37:13SPEAKER_03: Well, I mean, oh uh uh expand on that.
- 37:15SPEAKER_03: Like so when you when you say when you write down like obedience, are you talking about like I wrote uh I said, do you start by sitting at his feet?
- 37:23SPEAKER_06: Sure.
- 37:24SPEAKER_06: So I don't know what point Jim was.
- 37:26SPEAKER_06: I talked about that.
- 37:26SPEAKER_06: With with Like let your roots grow deep, invest in someone else.
- 37:31SPEAKER_06: And then are you Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:34SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that's what it was, Mary Martha.
- 37:36SPEAKER_06: So am I being obedient and which again, all of it comes down to am I being obedient?
- 37:44SPEAKER_06: And I think sometimes as adults, we forget that we have to be obedient to the body.
- 37:53SPEAKER_06: Also, you can't hear his voice if you're not spending time in the words.
- 37:56SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 37:56SPEAKER_06: I think a lot of people say I'm like, I can't hear God.
- 37:58SPEAKER_06: Like, how do I hear God?
- 37:59SPEAKER_06: Like, well, have you been reading your Bible?
- 38:01SPEAKER_06: Because those are his little words.
- 38:02SPEAKER_06: You know, and you can learn a lot there, and then you gain confidence in knowing who you are, who God is.
- 38:09SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 38:10SPEAKER_06: Not who you are in Christ, really.
- 38:11SPEAKER_06: I mean, that's true, but like who God is.
- 38:13SPEAKER_06: I'm confident in what I have to say because I'm confident in God.
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: And in the end, we're required to be obedient, to mirror that.
- 38:20SPEAKER_02: We're made in his image.
- 38:23SPEAKER_06: That we have to be obedient.
- 38:25SPEAKER_06: There's a lot of things we still have to be obedient to.
- 38:27SPEAKER_06: And you're like, you hear, like I just had a conversation with a mom of an 18-year-old.
- 38:31SPEAKER_06: How many times she's like, I'm 18.
- 38:32SPEAKER_06: I'm like, oh my gosh, how many times have I heard that?
- 38:34SPEAKER_06: Now, four times over.
- 38:36SPEAKER_06: I'm 18, I'm an adult.
- 38:37SPEAKER_06: I'm like, no.
- 38:39SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 38:40SPEAKER_06: There's no 18-year-old on the planet that's an adult.
- 38:43SPEAKER_06: I mean, maybe in third world countries, but it's like, no, 18-year-old, you're miserably stupid still.
- 38:49SPEAKER_06: But um, then you're like, Well, I'm 49.
- 38:52SPEAKER_06: But it's like, I still have to be obedient, you know, to the Lord.
- 38:56SPEAKER_06: I have to, but that's what Paul said.
- 38:58SPEAKER_06: I forget what chapter in 1 Corinthians it is, but it's like, I'm gonna, if I'm with the Jews, I'm a Jew, if I'm with the Gentiles and the Gentiles, oh, it was mine.
- 39:04SPEAKER_06: I preached this.
- 39:05SPEAKER_06: It's chapter nine.
- 39:06SPEAKER_06: But my first rule is I'm obedient to the Lord.
- 39:10SPEAKER_06: And I think we forget that a lot.
- 39:11SPEAKER_06: That's why why we want to call ourselves Christians, but we forget we're not following Christ.
- 39:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and speaking of obedience, it reminds me of like Paul, I think it was Paul Wright that communicated like, you know, disobedience as a kid to your parent is witchcraft.
- 39:25SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 39:26SPEAKER_06: It is one, it's it's one of the types of Do you want me to tell you a hilarious story on obedience?
- 39:31SPEAKER_06: Oh boy.
- 39:31SPEAKER_06: I love it.
- 39:32SPEAKER_06: And I apologize to everyone in the 11 o'clock service who watched this happen this last Sunday.
- 39:39SPEAKER_06: So well, it's obedience.
- 39:41SPEAKER_06: Okay, it starts with a little bit of uh disobedience, I guess, or stealing, whichever way you want to call it.
- 39:47SPEAKER_06: Oh gosh.
- 39:48SPEAKER_06: So last week I had to come back to church on Wednesday to set up for my small group, and I had to bring the girls with me because it's it's early out on Wednesday.
- 39:56SPEAKER_06: That's a whole whatever, it's throwing my whole week off.
- 39:59SPEAKER_06: So I bring them back, right?
- 40:00SPEAKER_06: So on Thursday, I'm in the car and I take another little girl home every day from school, and they're showing, one of them is showing Abby what they have in their backpack, and it's a squishy that I know does not belong to us.
- 40:15SPEAKER_06: I was like, Oh, where'd you get that?
- 40:16SPEAKER_06: They're like, Well, I can't tell you.
- 40:18SPEAKER_06: I was like, Well, you're gonna have to tell me because it's not yours, and so we're gonna give it back to whoever it belongs to.
- 40:23SPEAKER_06: So I'm like, listen, you guys, you can't take things that don't belong to you because that's stealing, and people aren't gonna like you if you steal from them.
- 40:30SPEAKER_06: So that was Wednesday after or Thursday after school, sorry.
- 40:34SPEAKER_06: So Thursday night, one of the twins, they always rat themselves out though.
- 40:39SPEAKER_06: It's so funny.
- 40:40SPEAKER_06: One of them was like, we should probably tell mom where we got that from.
- 40:44SPEAKER_06: And I was like, Yeah, you sure.
- 40:45SPEAKER_06: Like, you're gonna be mad.
- 40:46SPEAKER_06: I'm like, I promise I'm not gonna be mad.
- 40:48SPEAKER_06: So come to find out, on Wednesday when they're here, they see it in Caleb's office.
- 40:54SPEAKER_04: I love it.
- 40:55SPEAKER_06: This is where Jamie's Indiana basketball is.
- 40:58SPEAKER_06: They see it in Jamie in Caleb's office, and they're like, I wanted it, so I took it.
- 41:02SPEAKER_06: And I was like, Well, we're giving that back to Caleb, which they didn't want to do.
- 41:06SPEAKER_06: And I'm like, no, you are giving it back to Caleb because we don't steal.
- 41:10SPEAKER_06: And you know, and again, it's like we have to be obedient to we're being obedient to Christ here.
- 41:16SPEAKER_06: Like, we don't steal, you know.
- 41:18SPEAKER_06: And so on Sunday, rolls around, we're gonna give Caleb it back.
- 41:22SPEAKER_06: So it was in the sanctuary, and the certain twin that took it, I was like pulling her across, like she's on the floor, you guys.
- 41:32SPEAKER_06: This was like, I was manhandling her to go get in the chairs, and there are people in there.
- 41:36SPEAKER_06: So if you watched, you know this happened.
- 41:38SPEAKER_06: This is why.
- 41:39SPEAKER_06: So she's by the sound booth on the ground, was like, you need to get off the ground right now, like staring at her, giving her, trying to give her evil eye.
- 41:46SPEAKER_06: And she stood up.
- 41:47SPEAKER_06: I've literally picked her up and took her over to sit by Caleb because she did not want to tell him he's gonna be mad at me.
- 41:52SPEAKER_06: I was like, first of all, Caleb smiles all the time, he's never gonna be mad.
- 41:55SPEAKER_06: Yeah, so she sits down and I pull it out.
- 41:58SPEAKER_06: Caleb just starts dying laughing.
- 42:00SPEAKER_06: And I said, Mariah has sorry, Mariah has something to tell you.
- 42:04SPEAKER_06: Whoops, sorry, Mariah.
- 42:05SPEAKER_06: And I she was like, sorry, and then she walks away.
- 42:10SPEAKER_06: But I was like, you have to learn this lesson in obedience.
- 42:13SPEAKER_06: You're gonna be obedient to me as your mom because you're not taking something from someone, and we're gonna be obedient to the Lord here because we don't steal things that don't belong to us.
- 42:21SPEAKER_06: But so if you saw me wrestling my child that's almost as tall as me, that was why.
- 42:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's so we start singing the third day song the whole rest of the day.
- 42:28SPEAKER_02: I am a thief.
- 42:30SPEAKER_05: But Caleb's laughing and goes, I didn't even know it was God.
- 42:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 42:34SPEAKER_02: Don't say that to her.
- 42:35SPEAKER_02: Don't say that to her.
- 42:37SPEAKER_02: What else does Caleb not know is going to become a women in that office?
- 42:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 42:40SPEAKER_00: I I heard um years ago when I was up at World of Life, there was uh we had a guy spoke to our men's ministry that was um it was the it was the big men's ministry after Promise Keepers.
- 42:55SPEAKER_00: I can't remember what, but anyway, he was the national director of it.
- 42:58SPEAKER_00: But he said this: he said, I grew up uh seeing my dad in the kitchen every morning with his Bible, reading his Bible.
- 43:06SPEAKER_00: I just grew up that way.
- 43:08SPEAKER_00: And he said, finally later on, when I you know was married and all that, he said, I asked my dad one day, he said, Dad, how did you get into that habit or discipline of up early, reading your Bible, all that?
- 43:23SPEAKER_00: And he said, Well, son, he said, I learned something early on after I came to Christ, that he said the devil was gonna lie to me all day long.
- 43:32SPEAKER_00: And so he said, I knew that I had to get up early and fill my mind and heart with truth.
- 43:37SPEAKER_00: So good so I had something to combat the lies of the devil with all day long.
- 43:41unknown: Wow.
- 43:42SPEAKER_00: And I've never forgot that.
- 43:43SPEAKER_00: I thought that was so good.
- 43:44SPEAKER_00: That's that's what we're doing is we're filling our minds and hearts with truth so that we have something to combat the lies.
- 43:53SPEAKER_00: And the lie, you we all know the lies are gonna come in all various forms, right?
- 43:57SPEAKER_02: Well, I think our emotions and what's denying our That's what Kelly talked about in 2 Corinthians today.
- 44:02SPEAKER_02: It's like, you know, I think we justify our emotions, and that's what we have to deny.
- 44:11SPEAKER_02: And so, like, because we've been hurt and because someone harmed us, we can go, you know what?
- 44:17SPEAKER_02: They did it to us.
- 44:18SPEAKER_02: So I don't have to be friends to them.
- 44:20SPEAKER_02: So when she shared that scripture today, it's like, okay, but if you're reconciling, not only are you reconciling, you're comforting them and you're encouraging them that they know we're in good standings.
- 44:31SPEAKER_02: It's almost like the picture I had when she said that is it's almost like we're reassuring them over and over again that we're good.
- 44:39SPEAKER_02: And it's like, that's an incredible picture.
- 44:41SPEAKER_02: That so it's not just saying yes to Jesus and denying ourselves, it's living in relationship with people and denying ourselves and loving them as Christ loved them.
- 44:54SPEAKER_02: And that's ultimately what he says.
- 44:55SPEAKER_02: You forgive as you were forgiven.
- 44:58SPEAKER_02: You love as you've been loved.
- 44:59SPEAKER_02: Well, he's kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
- 45:02SPEAKER_02: So if his kindness is what leads to people re to repentance, then why do we think our kindness is different?
- 45:09SPEAKER_02: It's like, well, that's a whole nother.
- 45:12SPEAKER_02: Because I think we as a bunch of believers, we've taken an approach.
- 45:16SPEAKER_02: And I'm not saying you don't set boundaries.
- 45:17SPEAKER_02: I'm not saying you trust easily, but but I do think we we take that to an extreme and go, yeah, they wronged me.
- 45:25SPEAKER_02: I forgive them, and we're gonna move past it.
- 45:27SPEAKER_02: And I'm gonna unfriend them, I'm never gonna see them again, and we're gonna, we're gonna be done.
- 45:31SPEAKER_02: And it's like, ah, I don't know that Christ loved us that way.
- 45:35SPEAKER_02: I think he loved us differently than that.
- 45:38SPEAKER_02: And that that counters your flesh really easy because I'd rather not deal with it.
- 45:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 45:45SPEAKER_02: That's the self-denial part.
- 45:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 45:46SPEAKER_02: That's the taking up your cross part.
- 45:48SPEAKER_02: When Jesus could have said something, when Jesus could have come down from the cross, when Jesus could have been justified and saying, You're all wrong, he said, Father, forgive them.
- 45:58SPEAKER_02: They don't know what they're doing.
- 46:00SPEAKER_02: To me, that's a game changer.
- 46:03SPEAKER_02: He could have and he didn't.
- 46:05SPEAKER_02: How many times could we, but we shouldn't?
- 46:08SPEAKER_02: It's a big difference.
- 46:10SPEAKER_00: And I think that's what, you know, that kind of the negative justification justifying something.
- 46:15SPEAKER_00: What is it?
- 46:17SPEAKER_00: It's legitimizing a fault or a lie.
- 46:22SPEAKER_00: It's putting legitimy.
- 46:24SPEAKER_00: Legitimacy to a lie.
- 46:25SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 46:26SPEAKER_00: That's that is so true.
- 46:28SPEAKER_00: And I think that's that's And that's where we get comfort.
- 46:31SPEAKER_02: Because we got people all around us that are gonna be okay with you should feel that way.
- 46:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 46:41SPEAKER_06: Your feelings will lie to you.
- 46:43SPEAKER_06: That's my favorite thing to say to myself.
- 46:45SPEAKER_06: Your feelings will lie to you.
- 46:46SPEAKER_02: So true.
- 46:47unknown: Yeah.
- 46:48SPEAKER_02: That is true.
- 46:49SPEAKER_02: I feel like you should pray now.
- 46:51SPEAKER_06: Oh, do you?
- 46:52SPEAKER_05: You feel like that, they lie to you.
- 46:56SPEAKER_03: Sweet guys.
- 46:57SPEAKER_03: Well, another great episode, and um looking forward to next week.
- 47:01SPEAKER_03: But uh who wants to close us out?
- 47:04SPEAKER_06: I will.
- 47:05SPEAKER_06: That's fine.
- 47:06SPEAKER_03: Let's do it with Kelly.
- 47:07SPEAKER_06: God, thank you for this time.
- 47:08SPEAKER_06: I pray that you in this next uh few weeks in this series, God, that we learn to be the church, that it doesn't fall on people that are paid as pastors to do it, doesn't fall on church staff that are paid to do it.
- 47:21SPEAKER_06: God, as Christ's followers, as Christians, we are called to be the church everywhere that we go.
- 47:26SPEAKER_06: God, we're called to deny ourselves and take up our cross and follow Jesus to look like him, to act like him.
- 47:34SPEAKER_06: God, to be a light to the people around us.
- 47:36SPEAKER_06: So I pray over Life Community Church and just the church as a whole, God, that we begin to be the light of Jesus everywhere we go in Jesus' name.
