- 1:11Speaker 2: family got paranoid that the or of the ghosts that
- 1:22Speaker 2: maybe chase theme and this particular house they built had
- 1:29Speaker 2: built in ghost traps inside that they were sort of
- 1:35Speaker 2: paranoid of what their family built. That they were afraid
- 1:42Speaker 2: that whoever was killed by this invention would be going
- 1:47Speaker 2: beyond them. And they had a bunch of rooms that
- 1:54Speaker 2: were basically like ghost traps. And yeah, as we are
- 2:00Speaker 2: talking about the Winchester House and the rifle that did
- 2:10Speaker 2: when the Old West was the Winchester rifle and was
- 2:18Speaker 2: made by Samuel Winchester. And when Winchester, when Samuel Winchester
- 2:34Speaker 2: made this rifle, it wasn't really he wasn't really wanting
- 2:42Speaker 2: He wasn't at first wanting to go into gun making.
- 2:49Speaker 2: But he was also known as he was the first
- 2:54Speaker 2: of manufacturer of clothing back year New York City, New Haven, Connecticut.
- 3:04Speaker 2: And did he met his wife and then he ended

- 3:35Speaker 2: Ellen Hulk in Boston in February twentieth, eighteen thirty four,
- 3:42Speaker 2: and they had children and three children, Anna Anne Rebecca Winchester,
- 3:52Speaker 2: William will Worked Winchester, and Hannah Jane Winchester. U and
- 4:02Speaker 2: Rebecca Winchester went to marry Charles being a die and
- 4:08Speaker 2: William worked in Winchester and married Sarah Lockwood Party. Sarah
- 4:18Speaker 2: Lockwood Party would be a name later in the story. Then. Uh,
- 4:25Speaker 2: Hannah Jane Winchester married Thomas Gray Bennett. And like I said,
- 4:34Speaker 2: they were clothing makers.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Uh, you know, they were doing really good and during
- 4:43Speaker 3: this period he discovered that the division of the Smith
- 4:49Speaker 3: and Wesson Firearms was failing financially with one of their
- 4:55Speaker 3: new penon arms.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Having an eye for opportunity, Winchester assembled venture capital together
- 5:08Speaker 2: with other stockholders, to require the S and W Division,
- 5:16Speaker 2: better known as the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company, in eighteen
- 5:23Speaker 2: fifty five. By eighteen fifty seven, Winchester had a positioned
- 5:30Speaker 2: himself as a principal stockholder in the company and relocated
- 5:36Speaker 2: in New Haven, changed its name to the New Haven
- 5:41Speaker 2: Arms Company. Instantly, the company was plagued by sluggish returns,
- 5:48Speaker 2: which is a part attributed to the design or maintenance
- 5:54Speaker 2: of its volcanic cartridge, a hollow console ball filled with
- 6:02Speaker 2: buck powder and sealed by a court primer. Although the
- 6:08Speaker 2: Volcanics repeater designed far outspet outpaced the rival technology, the
- 6:18Speaker 2: poor performance and reliability of the of the twenty five
- 6:26Speaker 2: and thirty two caliber cartridges used in the pistol in
- 6:31Speaker 2: the models responsibly was little match for the competitors larger calipers.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Winchester had inherited a brilliant engineer hired a brilliant engineer
- 6:49Speaker 2: named Benjamin Taylor Henry, who was a valuable asset. Henry
- 6:57Speaker 2: sought to improve the Volcanic Repeat rifle by enlarging the
- 7:02Speaker 2: frame and the magazine to accommodate seventeen of its newly
- 7:09Speaker 2: redesigned all brass case forty four caliber M rifle cartridges.
- 7:16Speaker 2: This new cartridge put the new company on the map,
- 7:21Speaker 2: and Henry's ingenuity was rewarded with a patent in his
- 7:29Speaker 2: name in October sixteenth, eighteen sixty for what became the
- 7:35Speaker 2: famous Henry Rifle. The Henry rifle was manufactured for almost
- 7:41Speaker 2: six years and told production was apparently twelve thousand rifles
- 7:48Speaker 2: in number, which included both iron and brass frame models.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Following the excess for the Henry rifle, the company was
- 7:58Speaker 2: reorganized once and once more and renamed the Winchester Repeating
- 8:05Speaker 2: Arms Company in eighteen sixty six. Employee Nelson King's new
- 8:11Speaker 2: improved patent, it remained flaw, reminded the Flaws and the
- 8:17Speaker 2: Henry's rifle by incorporating the large gate on the side
- 8:25Speaker 2: of the frame and integrating the large sealed magazine, which
- 8:33Speaker 2: has was covered by a four stop. First Winchester rifle
- 8:41Speaker 2: was made the eighteen sixty six, which has been renicknamed
- 8:49Speaker 2: the Yellow Boy. Repeating rifles were used some extint of
- 8:55Speaker 2: the American Civil War. However, the United States Army at
- 9:00Speaker 2: the time did not use many repeat rifles as they
- 9:04Speaker 2: were expensive and to advance for the outdated tactics using
- 9:10Speaker 2: the war, Repeating rifles were not widely used until after
- 9:15Speaker 2: the war. It came increasingly popular with civilians military authorities,
- 9:25Speaker 2: and consecrated primarily on the prefecting the breach loading single

- 9:37Speaker 2: in hand for the average pioneer, the Winchester repeat rifles
- 9:43Speaker 2: gained repetition as gunn that won the West. Oliver Winchester
- 9:49Speaker 2: was also active in politics, serving as New Haven City's commissioner,
- 9:57Speaker 2: Republican presidential elector and eighteen sixty four, and Lieutenant Governor
- 10:03Speaker 2: of Connecticut from eighteen sixty six to eighteen sixty seven.
- 10:08Speaker 2: When Winchester died in December tenth in eighteen eighty, his
- 10:13Speaker 2: ownership of the company passed to one's son, William Vert Winchester,
- 10:20Speaker 2: who died at to Berkeleyomoses in March next year. William's wife, Sarah,
- 10:28Speaker 2: who moved to San Jose, where she began building the
- 10:33Speaker 2: chaotic mansions known as the Winchester Mystery House with their inheritance. Yeah,
- 10:44Speaker 2: she ended up building on the of the Mystery House.
- 10:49Speaker 2: And Sarah was really frightened of what you know, the
- 11:00Speaker 2: did the past, of what you know the Winchester rifle
- 11:06Speaker 2: did you know from you know Tame in the West,
- 11:10Speaker 2: all the you know, the cartage, the dead bodies, and
- 11:15Speaker 2: by g was afraid that you know, they were gonna

- 12:26Speaker 2: and began that could only describe as the world's largest
- 12:30Speaker 2: home renovation, stopping only when Sarah passed on September fifth,
- 12:38Speaker 2: nineteen twenty two. From eighteen eighty six to nineteen twenty two,
- 12:44Speaker 2: constructure manately never ceased as the original eight room farmhouse
- 12:50Speaker 2: through to the world's most unusual spawning mansion features. It

- 13:30Speaker 2: was of five million dollars, and that was in nineteen
- 13:36Speaker 2: twenty three. As of today it would have been around
