- 0:00Speaker 1: Encourage everyone when bringing adaptions on board to think about
- 0:03Speaker 1: their day, like what does your day to day look like?
- 0:07Speaker 1: And where is there some sort of consistent routine all
- 0:12Speaker 1: of us have it. It's you know, maybe we do
- 0:13Speaker 1: something in the morning through our you know, French press
- 0:17Speaker 1: of coffee, or we have a little something sweet at night,
- 0:20Speaker 1: or we always make that midday smoothie, Like what does
- 0:23Speaker 1: your day look like? And that's the best time to
- 0:26Speaker 1: bring adaptations on board because I would always tell my
- 0:29Speaker 1: clients the medicine doesn't work if you don't take it.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Hey, Hurdler's Emily Abadi are bringing you another installment of
- 0:50Speaker 2: Hurdle Moment from Hurdle. Today, I am diving into something
- 0:55Speaker 2: that might not sound super sexy, but stick with me
- 0:59Speaker 2: here because it is important. That is adaptogens. I get
- 1:05Speaker 2: so many questions, what are they, how do they work,
- 1:08Speaker 2: what are they called? What do they look like? A
- 1:11Speaker 2: lot of them involve mushrooms? Do they taste like mushrooms?
- 1:14Speaker 2: Like so many things, And I'll be honest. Until a
- 1:18Speaker 2: few years ago, when I started using adaptogens as a
- 1:21Speaker 2: regular part of my routine, I just thought it was
- 1:24Speaker 2: a lot of like goopy hype. But I am totally
- 1:29Speaker 2: on the bandwagon again. They are in my regular routine
- 1:33Speaker 2: and I wanted to come to the feed today and
- 1:35Speaker 2: give you all the intel so you can make a
- 1:38Speaker 2: smart decision that can better your health. And that is
- 1:41Speaker 2: where Danielle Ryan Broida comes in. She is a registered
- 1:45Speaker 2: herblist and she's also a certificolistic nutritionist and national educator
- 1:49Speaker 2: at four Sigmatic Recording. This may have been the most
- 1:54Speaker 2: I've learned talking to any expert within a twenty five
- 1:58Speaker 2: minute period. So listen up, pay attention as always, if
- 2:03Speaker 2: you have any more questions, I am here to help,
- 2:06Speaker 2: and I am more than positive that Danielle would love
- 2:09Speaker 2: to help as well. I'd love to hear what you
- 2:11Speaker 2: think on social Feel free to tag me at Emily
- 2:14Speaker 2: Abody and at Hurdle podcast and this conversation. This idea
- 2:18Speaker 2: came because I had a lot of people reaching out
- 2:21Speaker 2: to me to ask about adaptagen. So if you have
- 2:25Speaker 2: something you want to know about, if there is something
- 2:27Speaker 2: that I can help you with, I am all ears.
- 2:32Speaker 2: And lastly, I would be remiss if I didn't throw
- 2:34Speaker 2: the four Sigmatic promo code into the mix. Here they
- 2:37Speaker 2: are offering Hurdle listeners an awesome a deal. It's fifteen
- 2:40Speaker 2: percent off your purchase today. Just head on over to
- 2:42Speaker 2: foursigmatic dot com slash hurdle or use the code hurdle
- 2:46Speaker 2: at check out for fifteen percent off. Again, that's for
- 2:49Speaker 2: Sigmatic fou r sig natic dot com slash hurdle for
- 2:55Speaker 2: fifteen percent all your purchase today. My two favorites the
- 3:00Speaker 2: ground mushroom coffee with lines made and also the peanut
- 3:03Speaker 2: butter protein, neither of which actually taste like mushrooms. And
- 3:09Speaker 2: with that, let's get to hurdling. Today. I am sitting
- 3:23Speaker 2: down with Danielle Ryan Breida. She's the national educator for
- 3:27Speaker 2: four Stigmatic and I couldn't think of anyone better to
- 3:31Speaker 2: get on the show to talk to us about the
- 3:35Speaker 2: ever lovely topic of adaptagens. How you doing today, I'm
- 3:39Speaker 2: doing well, Thanks so much for having me excited to
- 3:42Speaker 2: drop in with you. I know, And here's the thing.
- 3:46Speaker 2: I feel as though, and I know that I include
- 3:51Speaker 2: a lot of things into my diet that have adaptagens,
- 3:55Speaker 2: and I talk about them a lot on the show,
- 3:58Speaker 2: and I'm pretty in the loop about why they're rad.
- 4:01Speaker 2: But I started to realize as I talked about them,
- 4:04Speaker 2: more here that I wasn't doing them justice, which is
- 4:07Speaker 2: why you and I are having this lovely opportunity to
- 4:11Speaker 2: connect today. Yeah.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Absolutely, they're in so many things, and the word is
- 4:16Speaker 1: definitely trending and being thrown around, and for good reason.
- 4:19Speaker 1: We all desperately need adaptagens to help us balance ourselves
- 4:24Speaker 1: through the wild, turbulent year of twenty twenty. But yeah,
- 4:29Speaker 1: we can kind of dig on one step deeper and
- 4:32Speaker 1: understand really what they are and why to use them
- 4:35Speaker 1: and everything that you want to know.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Okay, great, so you said it first, What are they?
- 4:41Speaker 2: Let's dive into that first. What are adaptogens?
- 4:45Speaker 1: Yes, so we're going to zoom out first and talk
- 4:49Speaker 1: about natural medicine because the way that we categorize any
- 4:54Speaker 1: natural medicine, whether it's a plant or a mushroom, is
- 4:57Speaker 1: based on its action, what it's doing for our body. So,
- 5:02Speaker 1: for example, I'll start with some more common herbs that
- 5:05Speaker 1: people might know of and be familiar with. We have
- 5:08Speaker 1: herbs that we might use for our digestion, say like
- 5:12Speaker 1: mince or ginger, So those are these put into this
- 5:15Speaker 1: category of digestive herbs. We have, you know, other categories
- 5:20Speaker 1: of herbs that help with our nervous system directly being
- 5:24Speaker 1: more sedative or hypnotic. Right, our passionflower, lemon, bomb, camomeal
- 5:29Speaker 1: could be in that category. So we have these groups.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Think of them like umbrella categories. And adaptogens are another category.
- 5:38Speaker 1: So they encompass both herbs and fungi. Right, So plants
- 5:42Speaker 1: and mushrooms, and there's four criteria which make a plant
- 5:47Speaker 1: or a mushroom an adaptogen.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Oh, this is this is good. This is the good stuff. Yeah,
- 5:52Speaker 2: this is what's up.
- 5:54Speaker 1: The first is that it's naturally occurring, so it's coming
- 5:57Speaker 1: from nature. The second is that it's non to toxic.
- 6:00Speaker 1: So there are plants and mushrooms that can be toxic. Right,
- 6:04Speaker 1: The more you take there can be either a beneficial
- 6:08Speaker 1: effect or if you take too much, there might be
- 6:11Speaker 1: a negative effect. With adaptogens, it's almost impossible to overdose
- 6:15Speaker 1: on them, so they're non toxic. The third is that
- 6:19Speaker 1: they're non habit forming. And so if you think of
- 6:24Speaker 1: something like green tea or coffee beans, right, things that
- 6:29Speaker 1: have caffeine in them, those are habit forming. You need
- 6:32Speaker 1: to take more and more to experience the same effect.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Adaptations are non habit forming, which means you want to
- 6:40Speaker 1: take them every single day, and they actually work best
- 6:43Speaker 1: when you take them long term. And then this fourth
- 6:47Speaker 1: categorization is what trips people up sometimes, and it's that
- 6:51Speaker 1: they're non specific. And so what do I mean by this?
- 6:55Speaker 1: Most natural medicines or things that we ingest push our
- 6:59Speaker 1: body in a certain direction, so they might be more
- 7:02Speaker 1: stimulating or relaxing. With adaptagens, they're nonspecific. So depending on
- 7:09Speaker 1: the state of your body, there's going to be a
- 7:11Speaker 1: slightly different reaction to bring your body back into a
- 7:16Speaker 1: state of balance. So, for example, if there's overactive stress
- 7:20Speaker 1: in your body, you take an adaptagen, it'll tamper down
- 7:23Speaker 1: that stress response. If say, you know you're really exhausted
- 7:28Speaker 1: and you need more energy, you can take that same
- 7:32Speaker 1: adaptagen and it might calm that stress response to bring
- 7:35Speaker 1: an increase of energy on board. So they're pun intended
- 7:39Speaker 1: helping your body to adapt to primarily different stressors.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Interesting, Okay, So if you are hoping that an adaptagen
- 7:50Speaker 2: will do one thing, it could technically do another thing.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 7:56Speaker 1: Yeah, we basically take them on board. It's just like
- 7:59Speaker 1: part of the everyday magic of you know. Functional mushrooms
- 8:03Speaker 1: are some of my favorite adaptagens, but they really will
- 8:06Speaker 1: bring your body what your body needs, and oftentimes we
- 8:10Speaker 1: don't know what our body needs. We think that, you know,
- 8:14Speaker 1: we need a specific quick fix band aid, you know,
- 8:17Speaker 1: a pill that's going to be this magic formula that's
- 8:20Speaker 1: going to get us where we need to go. And
- 8:22Speaker 1: adaptions are much more subtle in terms of bringing this
- 8:25Speaker 1: equilibrium so that our bodies can function optimally on their
- 8:29Speaker 1: own without being kind of tricked or pushed in a
- 8:32Speaker 1: certain direction. It's really like stoking our own body's vitality.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Like the body is brilliant, you know, the body has
- 8:40Speaker 1: evolved to deal with whatever it might be, whether it's
- 8:43Speaker 1: healing a cut on your leg and being able to
- 8:46Speaker 1: scar over and repair that tissue or deal with you know,
- 8:50Speaker 1: all sorts of things. The way that we deal with
- 8:52Speaker 1: stress is fascinating and we can digive into that, you know,
- 8:55Speaker 1: the evolutionary way we dealt with stress. But the body
- 8:59Speaker 1: is really wise and so with adaptogens, they're not band aids.
- 9:04Speaker 1: They're really this long term way of supporting the body's
- 9:09Speaker 1: natural vitality. Like this flow, this energy. In every tradition
- 9:13Speaker 1: there's a different word, you know energy in the West
- 9:16Speaker 1: or chi or whatever word resonates with you, but it's
- 9:19Speaker 1: really activating your body's own vitality so that you can
- 9:26Speaker 1: show up into in the world. Is the most optimal
- 9:29Speaker 1: version of yourself naturally, right, without having a crutch or
- 9:32Speaker 1: something that you're leaning on to get you there.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Awesome? Okay, So I take as I mentioned, a fair
- 9:40Speaker 2: share of things with adaptagens, and there are a few
- 9:43Speaker 2: different types of adaptagens in what I regularly consume from
- 9:49Speaker 2: the Greenspotter. I use in the morning too, things like
- 9:52Speaker 2: my four sigmatic coffee. So let's talk about maybe two
- 9:57Speaker 2: or three if possible, buzzy adaptogens that tend to be
- 10:02Speaker 2: in a lot of things. And I'm also curious on
- 10:06Speaker 2: this note if it's possible to have you said it's
- 10:09Speaker 2: hard to overdose quote on quote on adaptagens, but like
- 10:12Speaker 2: what's the right amount as well?
- 10:15Speaker 1: Yeah, this is a really great question because just like
- 10:18Speaker 1: any category of natural medicine, there's a spectrum. So there's
- 10:23Speaker 1: adaptagens that are going to be more gentle and nourishing,
- 10:27Speaker 1: things like oshwagonda or tolsi holy basil, and then there's
- 10:31Speaker 1: adaptions that are going to be a little bit more
- 10:34Speaker 1: aggressive per se which could be more of our you know,
- 10:37Speaker 1: aluthros or you know, even cordyceps mushroom. So there is
- 10:42Speaker 1: this range, and so you can choose which adaptagen is
- 10:46Speaker 1: right for you kind of based on.
- 10:49Speaker 2: What you're looking for.
- 10:51Speaker 1: So while they have these you know, those four criteria
- 10:54Speaker 1: that we laid out, they all have those in common,
- 10:56Speaker 1: they each have something a little additional that makes.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Them who they are. Right.
- 11:01Speaker 1: For example, we both have a lot of things in common.
- 11:04Speaker 1: We're sitting here spending our afternoon together talking about adaptagen,
- 11:07Speaker 1: so we have that commonality, and yet we each offer
- 11:10Speaker 1: something unique into the world. Similar similar kind of metaphor
- 11:14Speaker 1: holds true with our adaptogens.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Okay, okay, So how much of an adaptagen is a
- 11:21Speaker 2: normal amount of an adaptagen? And is it possible to
- 11:24Speaker 2: be adding too much to your diet at once? So
- 11:28Speaker 2: this is a really important question. There's a couple layers
- 11:31Speaker 2: to it. I think of adaptagens like, okay, we're going
- 11:37Speaker 2: to use this example of a city. Okay, So in
- 11:40Speaker 2: a city, there's often a reservoir, which is, you know,
- 11:44Speaker 2: this pool of water. So if there's drought.
- 11:47Speaker 1: In the city, you can pull from this resource, right,
- 11:51Speaker 1: and you can bring the city back into from a
- 11:54Speaker 1: state of stress. Right. Oh no, there's not enough water
- 11:57Speaker 1: into Okay, we're bringing balance again here, we're pulling from
- 12:00Speaker 1: this reservoir. Think of adaptagens like filling up what I
- 12:05Speaker 1: call our own bodies vital reserve. Okay, so if you
- 12:09Speaker 1: are acutely in a state of stress and you take
- 12:12Speaker 1: an adaptagen, it could be beneficial.
- 12:15Speaker 2: But what we want to do is.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Fill that reservoir, build this vital reserve so that when
- 12:19Speaker 1: the stressor comes, which is inevitable, we have the tools
- 12:23Speaker 1: the resources to more efficiently deal with it and then
- 12:27Speaker 1: bring our bodies back into a state of balance quicker.
- 12:30Speaker 1: So the dosing is going to depend on a couple things. Really,
- 12:36Speaker 1: every single body is unique. Which is part of the
- 12:40Speaker 1: beauty of natural medicine is that it's really not necessarily
- 12:44Speaker 1: about your gender, or your age or your weight, you know,
- 12:50Speaker 1: that would dictate how much you need. It has much
- 12:54Speaker 1: more to do with internal states. How is you know,
- 12:58Speaker 1: what level of stress are you dealing with, How well
- 13:01Speaker 1: is your liver functioning? You know?
- 13:02Speaker 2: How healthy is your gut?
- 13:04Speaker 1: You know? And are you able to actually absorb the
- 13:06Speaker 1: compounds from these adaptagens You're ingesting. So there's kind of
- 13:11Speaker 1: these subtle factors. But and then it really depends on
- 13:14Speaker 1: the species as well. So when we talk about mushrooms,
- 13:17Speaker 1: it's kind of a separate topic and there's a lot
- 13:20Speaker 1: to look for in terms of dosing. When we're talking
- 13:23Speaker 1: about our plant adaptogens, it's a little simpler, and I
- 13:27Speaker 1: recommend starting with five hundred milligrams a day, and then
- 13:31Speaker 1: the high end to start with being fifteen hundred milligrams
- 13:35Speaker 1: a day.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Okay, And if you were taking say in the middle
- 13:41Speaker 2: of that, how would you know if you were taking
- 13:44Speaker 2: too much?
- 13:45Speaker 1: Yeah, So we always want to check in with our
- 13:48Speaker 1: body and never use adaptagens as a crutch. Okay. This
- 13:53Speaker 1: is like kind of the piece with adaptagens is I
- 13:57Speaker 1: find it's so easy for us in the modern day
- 14:01Speaker 1: to be like, I just need something that's going to
- 14:03Speaker 1: help me get through today. And with adaptagens, they're really powerful,
- 14:08Speaker 1: and they're really great at bringing us into this state
- 14:11Speaker 1: of calm and balance, and I never want people to
- 14:16Speaker 1: be reliant upon it. So while you're taking adaptagens, you know,
- 14:20Speaker 1: I almost recommend simultaneously building the system from a dietary
- 14:25Speaker 1: perspective or making sure that you're replete in certain nutrients,
- 14:29Speaker 1: like making sure you have a good foundation so that
- 14:32Speaker 1: you're not using adaptagens to just as a way to like, oh,
- 14:35Speaker 1: this is getting me by. This is like I'm just
- 14:37Speaker 1: gonna take more and more to get by.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Right, Because when you take them, it's not like all
- 14:42Speaker 2: of a sudden you have like a total energy boost.
- 14:46Speaker 2: I feel as though the energy that I get, Like,
- 14:49Speaker 2: for instance, I am a huge fan of making a
- 14:52Speaker 2: smoothie about an hour after I have my lunch, and
- 14:56Speaker 2: I'll use the four segmatic peanut butter protein which I
- 14:59Speaker 2: am so so so so such a big fan of,
- 15:02Speaker 2: and I'll use that, and I feel as though it
- 15:05Speaker 2: is just part of the insurance policy. Right, It's like
- 15:09Speaker 2: something that I can do that I can use. That
- 15:13Speaker 2: means I don't need to walk over to min Espresso
- 15:16Speaker 2: and make another iced coffee.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Totally, yes, absolutely right, instead of having this, you know,
- 15:23Speaker 1: just reaching for our stimulant. It's like, how can we
- 15:27Speaker 1: actually give our body what it's looking for to function
- 15:30Speaker 1: in the way that we want, you know, when we
- 15:32Speaker 1: reach for that cup of coffee. Most of us want
- 15:35Speaker 1: to be more productive and focused and you know, have
- 15:38Speaker 1: a clear head but what we're often taught is like,
- 15:41Speaker 1: this is the only option for that drink another cup
- 15:43Speaker 1: of coffee. And so by bringing on board things like
- 15:48Speaker 1: functional mushrooms plant based adaptogens, we can often get the
- 15:51Speaker 1: results we're looking for without a lot of the negatives
- 15:54Speaker 1: that come with some of the crutches that are you know,
- 15:57Speaker 1: may be more.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Used to is there at best time of day to
- 16:02Speaker 2: take something that has adaptogens?
- 16:05Speaker 1: Yeah, so it depends on which adaptagen you're taking. So
- 16:08Speaker 1: this is a really great question. There's adaptions kind of
- 16:12Speaker 1: like what I mentioned which will be more energizing, So
- 16:15Speaker 1: things like alu throw and Rodiola route. We want to
- 16:19Speaker 1: take those more in the morning or you know, latest
- 16:22Speaker 1: I would recommend like early afternoon if you're someone that
- 16:26Speaker 1: has that mid afternoon cup of coffee. Uh. And then
- 16:29Speaker 1: there's adaptions that are much more relaxing. And so these
- 16:34Speaker 1: are our Rachi mushroom, are Oshogonda holy basil, And so
- 16:40Speaker 1: it always comes down to you know, the thing with
- 16:44Speaker 1: adaptagens is you got to be consistent.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Right.
- 16:46Speaker 1: I can't say it enough. They're not band aids. We
- 16:49Speaker 1: have to make sure that we're taking them long term
- 16:51Speaker 1: to really experience the benefits. And so I encourage everyone
- 16:55Speaker 1: when bringing adaptions on board to think about their day,
- 16:58Speaker 1: like what is your data day look like? And where
- 17:02Speaker 1: is there some sort of consistent routine all of us
- 17:06Speaker 1: have it. It's you know, maybe we do something in
- 17:08Speaker 1: the morning through our you know, French press of coffee,
- 17:12Speaker 1: or we have a little something sweet at night, or
- 17:14Speaker 1: we always make that mid day smoothie, Like what does
- 17:17Speaker 1: your day look like? And that's the best time to
- 17:20Speaker 1: bring adaptogens on board because I would always tell my
- 17:24Speaker 1: clients the medicine doesn't work if you don't take it.
- 17:26Speaker 1: So rather than be prescribing like this is the perfect
- 17:29Speaker 1: time of day and the perfect day, it's like, Okay,
- 17:31Speaker 1: we've got to make it work for your routine, meet
- 17:33Speaker 1: yourself where you're at. That is where long term sustainable
- 17:37Speaker 1: results really come from is and it can be it
- 17:40Speaker 1: can start so simple. And that's why I love what
- 17:43Speaker 1: we're doing it for sigmatic is we're really embedding these adaptagens,
- 17:48Speaker 1: super foods, functional mushrooms, like the most nutrient dense ingredients
- 17:51Speaker 1: on the planet into things that are so easy, that
- 17:56Speaker 1: are so part of our day to day lives, like
- 17:59Speaker 1: we don't even think about them. That it's almost more
- 18:03Speaker 1: challenging to make it not part of your daily routine, right,
- 18:06Speaker 1: you just want to do it every day.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Yeah. And I think also to go hand in hand
- 18:10Speaker 2: with this a great comparison to integrating adaptagens, Like what's
- 18:15Speaker 2: important is that you take them and that they're in
- 18:17Speaker 2: your day, maybe not so much exactly where they're placed.
- 18:20Speaker 2: It's almost like consuming water, right, It's like you want
- 18:25Speaker 2: to consume water throughout the day, and their number one
- 18:28Speaker 2: priority is consuming water throughout the day. And it doesn't
- 18:31Speaker 2: matter if you drink it with meals or you drink
- 18:33Speaker 2: it in between meals or where you're taking it. Just
- 18:36Speaker 2: focus on having water period. Yes.
- 18:40Speaker 1: I love that, and I think, you know, that's a
- 18:42Speaker 1: really great starting place. And then if after a couple
- 18:45Speaker 1: of weeks, like okay, I got this, and someone's like,
- 18:48Speaker 1: I'm super down with my water routine. I'm being consistent,
- 18:50Speaker 1: I'm drinking X amount of ounces a day, and then
- 18:53Speaker 1: they're like, now I want you know the next level,
- 18:56Speaker 1: and it's like, okay, probably don't drink that water with
- 18:59Speaker 1: your meal if you can handle it, so you can
- 19:01Speaker 1: make sure you have all those great digestive enzymes that
- 19:03Speaker 1: aren't diluted while you're eating. Similarly, with adaptogens, like step one,
- 19:08Speaker 1: just bring them in. You know, notice where your routine is,
- 19:12Speaker 1: bring them in, you know, the more stimulating adaptions in
- 19:15Speaker 1: the morning, if you have more of an evening routine,
- 19:18Speaker 1: bring more of the calming adaptagens on board. And then
- 19:21Speaker 1: from there we'll have a two point zero where we
- 19:24Speaker 1: go like the best practices of you know when to
- 19:27Speaker 1: take with what, you know the synergy of when you
- 19:30Speaker 1: combine adaptogens. There's so much we can get into totally.
- 19:33Speaker 2: Okay, a couple last listener questions to bring into the mix.
- 19:38Speaker 2: One are adaptagen safe wall breastfeeding.
- 19:42Speaker 1: So this is a great question. It's really interesting as
- 19:47Speaker 1: a as a registered herbalist, there's only three types of
- 19:51Speaker 1: individuals who it's actually illegal for me to work with.
- 19:55Speaker 1: One of them are cancer patients, the other are pregnant
- 19:58Speaker 1: and breastfeeding women, and the other are children under two.
- 20:01Speaker 1: And so there's such vulnerable you know, when you're when
- 20:04Speaker 1: you're going through pregnancy, breastfeeding, the postpartum phases, your body
- 20:10Speaker 1: is adjusting in so many ways, especially hormonally, which is
- 20:16Speaker 1: oftentimes where adaptagens are targeting.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Right.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Stress is a hormone port of all right, So I
- 20:23Speaker 1: do have to say it's so body dependent. I know
- 20:27Speaker 1: a lot of a lot of pregnant women that do
- 20:30Speaker 1: take adaptagens at certain phases in pregnancy, but there's specific
- 20:34Speaker 1: adaptagens based on your body so always, you know, and
- 20:38Speaker 1: we can in the show notes link some herbalist recommendations
- 20:42Speaker 1: that specifically focus on women's fertility and making sure that
- 20:47Speaker 1: you're choosing the right herbs, whether they're adaptagens or even
- 20:51Speaker 1: other herbs that that are right for your body at
- 20:57Speaker 1: these really vulnerable and import certain times of your life,
- 21:01Speaker 1: like you know, pregnancy being such a such a loud
- 21:05Speaker 1: example of that.
- 21:06Speaker 2: I've never had a guest tell me what we should
- 21:09Speaker 2: include in the show notes, but I love that. I'm
- 21:12Speaker 2: so in Danielle Well. So many people like.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Oh, you know after shows, you know, oh, can I
- 21:19Speaker 1: schedule an appointment? And there are so many incredible Rbliss
- 21:23Speaker 1: and practitioners out there, and I think it's a really
- 21:26Speaker 1: underrated art where it's so easy to get herbs. You know,
- 21:30Speaker 1: we can pick them up in any grocery store, most
- 21:33Speaker 1: of our pharmacies now and it is medicine, and so
- 21:37Speaker 1: I would want to remind us like there's a proper
- 21:39Speaker 1: way and to really see the most beneficial results. It's
- 21:43Speaker 1: so important to work with someone like I even have
- 21:46Speaker 1: an herbalist. I don't make my own formulas for myself, right,
- 21:50Speaker 1: And when it comes to natural medicine, it's really like matchmaking.
- 21:56Speaker 1: Like what I mean by that is, you know the
- 21:58Speaker 1: big difference when we're talking about natural medicine, like our
- 22:01Speaker 1: adaptogens and Western medicine are. With natural medicine, there's a synergy.
- 22:07Speaker 1: So you have this whole form with tons of different
- 22:12Speaker 1: compounds working together right in harmony. And when we have
- 22:18Speaker 1: a medication, right, a Western you know, FDA proved medication,
- 22:23Speaker 1: it's one synthesized compound that can have a repeatable effect
- 22:29Speaker 1: in almost anybody that takes it.
- 22:30Speaker 2: Right.
- 22:31Speaker 1: One of us take an end sad right, like an ibuprofen,
- 22:34Speaker 1: and it'll have a similar effect no matter who you are.
- 22:39Speaker 1: With natural medicine, it's so different. It's like each of
- 22:43Speaker 1: us as a human is unique, right, And there's different
- 22:48Speaker 1: in Western herbalism. We call them constitutions, which means some
- 22:52Speaker 1: of us are prone to be a little more warm,
- 22:54Speaker 1: a little cooler, a little more moist, a little more
- 22:58Speaker 1: dry andre veda right, traditional Indian medicine, there's these three doshas,
- 23:04Speaker 1: are you more airy, fiery, earthy? In traditional Chinese medicine
- 23:08Speaker 1: there's four you know, different body types, and you can
- 23:13Speaker 1: look at this. This is an almost all traditional folklore.
- 23:17Speaker 1: We recognize that not all bodies are the same. And
- 23:20Speaker 1: when we look at our natural medicines like our you know,
- 23:23Speaker 1: grati mushroom, our aluthro root, whatever we might be talking about,
- 23:27Speaker 1: they also have different energetics. So you know, there's plants
- 23:32Speaker 1: that are a lot more warming, right I think of
- 23:35Speaker 1: like ginger or cayenne pepper. And there's herbs that are
- 23:41Speaker 1: a lot drier, like think about cannabis is like or nettle.
- 23:44Speaker 1: You know, these are like some of our premiere really
- 23:46Speaker 1: dry herbs. And so instead of just saying like oh
- 23:49Speaker 1: I read that, you know oshwaganda is great to support
- 23:54Speaker 1: my stress response and chill me out, it's like okay,
- 23:58Speaker 1: but but is that right for for your body? And
- 24:00Speaker 1: I feel like this is kind of the magic missing
- 24:02Speaker 1: link that a lot of people just grab something and
- 24:06Speaker 1: don't and miss like, okay, how am I actually feeling?
- 24:09Speaker 1: And is this right for what my body needs? And
- 24:13Speaker 1: there's so much incredible synergy that happens when you get
- 24:18Speaker 1: that match right. You know, when it's like, Okay, my
- 24:20Speaker 1: body's a little more dry. I love it. Six thousand
- 24:23Speaker 1: feet in Colorado, Like it's dry up here. So your
- 24:26Speaker 1: your environment where you live in definitely has an effect
- 24:29Speaker 1: on your constitution. So I'm dry, So I know that
- 24:33Speaker 1: I need some more moistening herbs, you know, think of
- 24:36Speaker 1: like alobera. These really like moist we call them demulsion,
- 24:42Speaker 1: you know, natural medicines, and so yeah, just taking into
- 24:45Speaker 1: account too, like you know, just always listening to your body,
- 24:50Speaker 1: because each of our bodies are unique, each of the
- 24:52Speaker 1: plants and mushrooms are unique, and so it's really about
- 24:55Speaker 1: finding the right dose for you. And matchmaking is like
- 25:01Speaker 1: the best example that I can relate it to.
- 25:05Speaker 2: And the last question I have for you today, how
- 25:07Speaker 2: long would you say, I know, we talked about the
- 25:10Speaker 2: reservoir effect so to speak, but how long would you
- 25:13Speaker 2: say that someone could be taking adaptagens regularly to start
- 25:19Speaker 2: to maybe feel a difference.
- 25:22Speaker 1: I would give them six weeks, so every single day
- 25:25Speaker 1: for six weeks, starting at a minimum of that five
- 25:28Speaker 1: hundred milligram dosage, and then listening to your body throughout,
- 25:31Speaker 1: you know, building up or stepping down based on how
- 25:34Speaker 1: you feel. Yeah, before kind of judging, aga, this works,
- 25:38Speaker 1: this doesn't. But what's so cool about adaptions is they're subtle.
- 25:42Speaker 1: So I would recommend before you bring on X adaptogen
- 25:46Speaker 1: into your daily routine, writing down maybe I call it
- 25:51Speaker 1: like a symptom checklist, but writing down a couple of
- 25:53Speaker 1: ways that you're feeling, so you know, this is how
- 25:56Speaker 1: my digestion is looking, This is how well I'm sleeping,
- 26:00Speaker 1: This is you know, whether or not you get headaches,
- 26:03Speaker 1: your hunger level, and then put that aside, just like
- 26:06Speaker 1: put it in a cupboard, don't look at it. And
- 26:08Speaker 1: then every day you take your adaptro gen. Six weeks
- 26:13Speaker 1: later you fill out the same checklist, right, and Okay,
- 26:17Speaker 1: this is how my digestion's doing. This is my head,
- 26:19Speaker 1: this is my sleep, and then compare the two and
- 26:23Speaker 1: that is the best way because there's not like, oh,
- 26:26Speaker 1: all of a sudden, I have this and then it
- 26:28Speaker 1: fixed this. They're much more building and nourishing, and so
- 26:34Speaker 1: we notice them in different ways, and it's so fascinating
- 26:39Speaker 1: to you know, working with clients and you could be
- 26:42Speaker 1: dealing with something and once it goes away, we really
- 26:47Speaker 1: forget what we were dealing with. It's fascinating. It's like
- 26:50Speaker 1: you could have headaches every single day for three years
- 26:53Speaker 1: and once they go away, you forget that you had headaches, like, oh, yeah,
- 26:57Speaker 1: I was dealing with that. So it's it is really
- 27:01Speaker 1: important to have that kind of before and after so
- 27:04Speaker 1: you can look and notice, Okay, this is actually what shifted.
- 27:08Speaker 1: A lot of times when we're in a state of
- 27:11Speaker 1: stress and we bring adaptions on board, things that we
- 27:14Speaker 1: don't think have anything to do with stress begin to resolve,
- 27:19Speaker 1: or you know, we begin to get more energy and
- 27:21Speaker 1: vitality in certain areas. You know, it's basically like we're
- 27:24Speaker 1: taking ourselves out of out of survival mode and allowing
- 27:29Speaker 1: our bodies to start restoring and working optimally once again.
- 27:34Speaker 1: And so give them six weeks. Keep checking in with
- 27:38Speaker 1: your body throughout before and after checklist would be a
- 27:42Speaker 1: top recommendation. And yeah, and then share your results. It's
- 27:47Speaker 1: really important.
- 27:48Speaker 2: You know.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Stories are one of the most profound ways that we
- 27:51Speaker 1: can learn about natural medicine and what they do. Right.
- 27:54Speaker 1: That's how they've been passed on for hundreds, sometimes thousands
- 27:57Speaker 1: of years, depending on the culture, and so it's like,
- 28:00Speaker 1: don't believe me, bring them on board, and then let
- 28:03Speaker 1: us know what you feel and your experience will be
- 28:05Speaker 1: unique and add to add to the kind of knowledge
- 28:09Speaker 1: base of what we know about.
- 28:11Speaker 2: That species that you took. I'm so grateful for this.
- 28:16Speaker 2: I feel like this is everything I wish that I
- 28:19Speaker 2: knew before I started taking adaptogens. I mean when I
- 28:23Speaker 2: started taking adaptogens, I think I was working at self
- 28:29Speaker 2: maybe four years ago, and I had written up a
- 28:33Speaker 2: blurb about past hurdle guests Moonjuice founder Amanda Chantel Bacon,
- 28:38Speaker 2: and I was like, well, if Amanda takes them, then
- 28:40Speaker 2: I should definitely start taking them. And I knew nothing.
- 28:46Speaker 2: And so it wasn't until I'd say about two two
- 28:49Speaker 2: and a half years ago that I started consistently every
- 28:52Speaker 2: single day putting them in to my routine. And I've
- 28:56Speaker 2: never looked back. And so I agree with you. I
- 28:58Speaker 2: think the stories are important. And I really love your
- 29:01Speaker 2: piece of advice when it comes to the journaling and
- 29:03Speaker 2: the checklist and just really checking in with yourself, because
- 29:07Speaker 2: I think that that's something that when things are busy
- 29:09Speaker 2: and we're feeling stressed or anxious or whatnot. We don't
- 29:12Speaker 2: take the time to do that self inventory, and that
- 29:15Speaker 2: self inventory can make a major, major difference. So thank
- 29:20Speaker 2: you so much, Danielle for sharing your wisdom with me.
- 29:24Speaker 2: And depending how the hurdlers feel about this, you guys,
- 29:27Speaker 2: let me know. But I have a feeling that we
- 29:29Speaker 2: have a lot more things that we can talk about
- 29:30Speaker 2: in the weeks and the months to come.
- 29:33Speaker 1: For sure, thank you so much for having me. Yeah,
- 29:37Speaker 1: it feels like such an important time to really be
- 29:40Speaker 1: digging into adaptagens and you know, these natural, long term
- 29:45Speaker 1: solutions to our stress response. You know, this year, I've
- 29:49Speaker 1: never gotten more questions about what can I do to
- 29:52Speaker 1: support my stress? You know, it keeps coming unexpectedly. I
- 29:55Speaker 1: get another trigger, like every day, every week, what can
- 29:59Speaker 1: I be doing? And so just to speak to the
- 30:01Speaker 1: times that feels so relevant and it's such an easy way.
- 30:06Speaker 1: You know, I always say, like add before you take away.
- 30:09Speaker 1: You know, it's something that you can add. Think of
- 30:10Speaker 1: it like a little gift that you're giving to yourself
- 30:13Speaker 1: to feel better every day, you know, in a really
- 30:17Speaker 1: really simple, in a simple way that is also delicious,
- 30:20Speaker 1: and yeah, check in with yourself, make it, make it
- 30:24Speaker 1: something special. And that extra piece of mindfulness goes so
- 30:28Speaker 1: far when you're taking when you're taking adaptations.
- 30:32Speaker 2: I'm about it. Thank you so much. How did the
- 30:34Speaker 2: hurdlers find you? How do they keep up with you?
- 30:36Speaker 2: Give me the details.
