- 0:55Speaker 2: am so amped understatement to be chatting with the one,
- 1:00Speaker 2: the only, Jordan Childs. She's a pro gymnast Olympic silver
- 1:05Speaker 2: medalist who made waves at this year's Games by stepping
- 1:09Speaker 2: in for best friend and teammate Simone Biles after she
- 1:12Speaker 2: had to withdraw from the team competition following a shaky
- 1:16Speaker 2: showing on vault. Today we talk all about that moment
- 1:20Speaker 2: in Tokyo, what it felt like.
- 1:22Speaker 3: To get that silver medal and the necessary.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Conversation that Team USA Gymnastics has sparked about the prioritization
- 1:29Speaker 2: of mental health. Plus we learned about Jordan's beginnings right
- 1:32Speaker 2: how she unwillingly went to her first ever gymnastics practice seriously,
- 1:38Speaker 2: how she navigated verbal abuse early in her gymnastics career
- 1:43Speaker 2: and the impact that has had on her, Plus her
- 1:45Speaker 2: big career aspirations beyond the match.
- 1:49Speaker 3: This conversation to be real.
- 1:51Speaker 2: It's fun and it's honest, and mostly I'm just thankful
- 1:54Speaker 2: that Jordan was able to squeeze me in while finishing
- 1:57Speaker 2: up the gold Over America Tour. A huge thank you
- 2:01Speaker 2: to her and the team for making this all happen.
- 2:04Speaker 2: We're heading into the holidays this week, Thanksgiving on deck
- 2:06Speaker 2: Hanukkah on Sunday, and thus it begins, and so I
- 2:10Speaker 2: just want to say, from the bottom of my heart,
- 2:12Speaker 2: I am so so grateful for all of you, and
- 2:14Speaker 2: it kind of blows my mind that I get to
- 2:17Speaker 2: show up week after week and do this and give

- 2:41Speaker 2: send it in a text message wherever you want to
- 2:44Speaker 2: share it. I am forever appreciate it. Go on, just
- 2:49Speaker 2: takes a couple of seconds. Tell them why you love hurdle.
- 2:53Speaker 3: With that, let's get to hurdling today.
- 3:08Speaker 2: I am sitting down with Jordan Childs. She's an Olympic
- 3:11Speaker 2: silver medalist gymnast.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Jordan. Welcome to the show.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Where in the world right now is Jordan Chiles?
- 3:20Speaker 1: Currently? I am in Pittsburgh, which is really really crazy
- 3:24Speaker 1: because yesterday, well know, the day before, we were in
- 3:29Speaker 1: North Carolina, So, you know, I'm just traveling all over the.
- 3:32Speaker 2: World, all over the world. You're on the Gold Over
- 3:36Speaker 2: America tour. Talk to me how that has been for
- 3:39Speaker 2: you. You kind of jumped pretty much right into this not
- 3:42Speaker 2: too soon after coming back from Tokyo.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Uh yeah, definitely was a right away thing. You know,
- 3:49Speaker 1: this tour has been an amazing experience. I want to
- 3:52Speaker 1: change the world for it, and I'm happy I was
- 3:54Speaker 1: able to be a part of it, which is really
- 3:55Speaker 1: really cool just to even say, like when I was younger,
- 3:59Speaker 1: I've wanted to be a tour and actually being in
- 4:01Speaker 1: a tour is a huge, huge accomplishment for me.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I love the sentence like when I was younger, not
- 4:08Speaker 2: to like diminish your age right now, but you have
- 4:10Speaker 2: done so much by the age of twenty that is
- 4:13Speaker 2: absolutely remarkable. So it's just funny, you know, that kind
- 4:17Speaker 2: of perspective. But if you've done this much already, like
- 4:19Speaker 2: think about how much of more of the world is
- 4:21Speaker 2: like for you to conquer.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Yes, I know it's been crazy. I mean just to
- 4:26Speaker 1: even think about my accomplishments from before I was even twenty,
- 4:31Speaker 1: that's crazy. And now I'm like, oh, my goodness, so
- 4:34Speaker 1: much I've been doing.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Do you have a favorite city that y'all have been
- 4:39Speaker 3: to on this tour so far?
- 4:41Speaker 1: Obviously Houston was my go to, you know, my Texans
- 4:46Speaker 1: were definitely out there representing us, which was really cool.
- 4:50Speaker 1: But I mean every city that we've gone to has
- 4:52Speaker 1: been amazing. A lot of the cities I've been to
- 4:55Speaker 1: before due to like competitions I've done out there, but
- 4:59Speaker 1: definitely been really fun and really cool, the energy, the vibes.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Everything, everything, and like, I mean, just a landmark year
- 5:08Speaker 2: for you, which is crazy to think about the fact
- 5:11Speaker 2: that not all that long ago, about like four years ago,
- 5:14Speaker 2: you were kind of at a point where you were like, yo,
- 5:17Speaker 2: I don't know if I really want to do this anymore.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Talk to me about how you got to that point
- 5:22Speaker 2: back in twenty seventeen.
- 5:25Speaker 1: It took me a while to be back into the
- 5:28Speaker 1: position I wanted to actually feel like I could fulfill something.
- 5:33Speaker 1: It took me almost two years. But you know, those
- 5:37Speaker 1: are all lessons. Those are all things that people go through.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Not every single thing in my life is perfect, and
- 5:44Speaker 1: I don't consider my life perfect. It's not a thing
- 5:48Speaker 1: that is up in the air where I'm just like,
- 5:49Speaker 1: oh yeah, my life is this, this and this, But
- 5:51Speaker 1: it's not. Everybody goes through a lot of things, and
- 5:54Speaker 1: at that moment, I was just going through a lot
- 5:56Speaker 1: of things. And it took me a while, but you know,
- 5:58Speaker 1: I had this support, I had the love, I had
- 6:01Speaker 1: the encouraging words that people were giving me, telling me like, look,
- 6:04Speaker 1: you can do this if you want to. We all
- 6:06Speaker 1: know you're talented. So if you want to do it,
- 6:08Speaker 1: you do it. If not, that's on you. So it
- 6:11Speaker 1: definitely was a huge, like humongous toll on me. But
- 6:16Speaker 1: you know, at the end of the day, I'm just
- 6:18Speaker 1: so thankful that I was able to push through those
- 6:20Speaker 1: years and just be able to look back and be
- 6:23Speaker 1: like those years never existed.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Were just like pretend they never happened.
- 6:28Speaker 2: But I mean to your point, like going through that
- 6:30Speaker 2: time where you like looked at your mom and you
- 6:32Speaker 2: were like, I don't want to look at any of
- 6:34Speaker 2: this gymnastics stuff anymore. I want to take a break,
- 6:37Speaker 2: like I'm not about it, Like you felt some kind
- 6:39Speaker 2: of way to like go from that to where you
- 6:42Speaker 2: are now, Like that experience it taught you so much.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Yes it did. I honestly like if I even said
- 6:50Speaker 1: that to my mom now, my heart would probably hit me,
- 6:53Speaker 1: like really really hard because it's just like I went
- 6:57Speaker 1: through so much, Like the reasonings on why I wanted
- 7:00Speaker 1: to do it was really really crazy. I just didn't
- 7:04Speaker 1: want to be in that gymnastics world at that moment
- 7:06Speaker 1: in time. But like if I said that now, I'd
- 7:08Speaker 1: be crazy. I don't know why I'd be saying it,
- 7:11Speaker 1: you know, Like I said there are lessons, and I
- 7:14Speaker 1: don't think it's a lot of people say, oh, it's
- 7:17Speaker 1: a failure thing, like you were going to fail and dad,
- 7:19Speaker 1: but it's not. It's just a lesson that I had
- 7:22Speaker 1: to learn. I don't believe in failure because failure isn't
- 7:25Speaker 1: a thing in life. They're all just lessons and you
- 7:29Speaker 1: have to either figure out, Okay, what did I do
- 7:31Speaker 1: during this lesson? Do I pick bits and pieces out
- 7:35Speaker 1: of it that I did good in it and take
- 7:37Speaker 1: that with me, or do I just leave that lesson
- 7:40Speaker 1: behind and be like, Okay, it's okay, I'm going to
- 7:42Speaker 1: move on. So that's how I kind of figure things out.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Talk me through what had happened leading up to this
- 7:48Speaker 2: period of time where you debated walking away from sport,
- 7:51Speaker 2: and before you do that, I do just want to
- 7:53Speaker 2: say that the wisdom that you have around this topic
- 7:56Speaker 2: is like, so well beyond your years. I know so
- 7:59Speaker 2: much many people that struggle to find the silver linings
- 8:02Speaker 2: that you're talking about when it comes to overcoming what
- 8:05Speaker 2: we refer to on the show as these hurdle moments, right,
- 8:08Speaker 2: So kudos to you on that level, But talk to
- 8:11Speaker 2: me about perhaps the hardships that you were experiencing, or
- 8:15Speaker 2: the frustrations that made you just want to be like, nah,
- 8:18Speaker 2: I'm all sad.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Well, thank you, thank you for saying that the hardships
- 8:25Speaker 1: that I was going through was basically I was verbally abused.
- 8:29Speaker 1: I was verguely abused to it an extent of me
- 8:32Speaker 1: feeling like even if you told me like, hey, this
- 8:36Speaker 1: is what you look like, I would go into a
- 8:38Speaker 1: shutdown mode and would not come out of my room.
- 8:41Speaker 1: I wouldn't really eat like it was just really bad.
- 8:44Speaker 1: It even came to the way I looked my hair,
- 8:47Speaker 1: my complexion, my everything. So those were the times that
- 8:52Speaker 1: I had to figure out if I was gonna be
- 8:55Speaker 1: able to feel strong enough to continue knowing that I'm
- 8:59Speaker 1: going to get criticized for things like this, or to
- 9:02Speaker 1: be like, Okay, this isn't for me and I'm just
- 9:05Speaker 1: gonna figure out another route that I'm supposed to go.
- 9:08Speaker 1: But you know the person I am, I'm not a quitter.
- 9:12Speaker 1: I'm a hard working person. So I just took that
- 9:14Speaker 1: with me and understood like, this is going to make
- 9:16Speaker 1: me stronger and this is going to make me feel
- 9:18Speaker 1: like Okay, I was able to defeat something that I
- 9:22Speaker 1: thought I wasn't going to be able to So all
- 9:24Speaker 1: that aches and pains and crying and feeling like I
- 9:29Speaker 1: didn't exist in the world and all that stuff is
- 9:32Speaker 1: actually a huger perspective in my life than it isn't
- 9:36Speaker 1: a lot of people, because I took that with me
- 9:38Speaker 1: and it made me stronger and it made me feel like, Okay,
- 9:42Speaker 1: I know where I can put myself in this position
- 9:45Speaker 1: and I can stand strong and just continue what I
- 9:48Speaker 1: need to do.
- 9:49Speaker 2: So interesting, right, it makes me think about that. I
- 9:52Speaker 2: feel like it's like a saying or something. It's like,
- 9:54Speaker 2: don't take feedback from people that you wouldn't look to
- 9:58Speaker 2: for advice. And so for you, I mean, this is
- 10:01Speaker 2: about four years ago now. To go through that experience
- 10:05Speaker 2: and think about all these things, think about how you're
- 10:08Speaker 2: gonna feel about the fact that people are gonna have
- 10:10Speaker 2: an opinion about you, I mean, back then compared to
- 10:13Speaker 2: where you are now, it's actually kind of really awesome.
- 10:17Speaker 2: I mean, even though like it sucked in the moment,
- 10:20Speaker 2: But if you hadn't gone through that then, I mean now,
- 10:23Speaker 2: like I mean, you're you know, you've blown up after
- 10:26Speaker 2: everything that had happened in the past year, you know,
- 10:28Speaker 2: so to speak. So to be able to deal with
- 10:31Speaker 2: this right now, it's like you needed that awful time.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Yeah I would. I would say so too, like I
- 10:38Speaker 1: don't know what would happen if I believe everything happens
- 10:42Speaker 1: for a reason. That's how I take things. And it's
- 10:47Speaker 1: been a while since I've even thought about what happened
- 10:50Speaker 1: in the past and all that, because it's like those
- 10:52Speaker 1: memories are basically almost gone, which I'm so happy about
- 10:55Speaker 1: because it's like I want to transfer my life into
- 10:58Speaker 1: a new basically new season, a new chapter and feeling like, Okay,
- 11:03Speaker 1: this is how my life is supposed to be. But man,
- 11:07Speaker 1: those I have no like, I have no say on
- 11:12Speaker 1: what was going on, but it definitely was something that
- 11:17Speaker 1: had pushed me to where I am right now, and
- 11:19Speaker 1: I'm very very thankful for that, because, like you said,
- 11:22Speaker 1: I don't know what would have happened if that those
- 11:25Speaker 1: moments didn't happen.
- 11:28Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure.
- 11:29Speaker 2: So before we get into the future and where you're going,
- 11:32Speaker 2: of course, we do need to reflect a little bit
- 11:34Speaker 2: on the past. So before you know the now and
- 11:38Speaker 2: the past year, which was the Olympics and that big
- 11:41Speaker 2: moment for you when you got started with gymnastics, Did
- 11:44Speaker 2: you feel as excited as passionate about it as you
- 11:47Speaker 2: soon would become.
- 11:49Speaker 1: I honestly didn't know what I was putting myself through.
- 11:53Speaker 1: I just needed to get energy out. I had a
- 11:56Speaker 1: like I could not sit still to the point where
- 12:00Speaker 1: my dad would ask me a question and I would
- 12:03Speaker 1: only be able to answer the question if I was moving,
- 12:07Speaker 1: and it got so bad to where he was like
- 12:08Speaker 1: getting frustrated, like Okay, I can't deal with this, Like
- 12:12Speaker 1: my daughter needs to actually give me an answer while
- 12:15Speaker 1: she's staying still. And so, you know, I got the
- 12:19Speaker 1: gift of the sports part of my family, and it
- 12:24Speaker 1: was something that like, I could you can put me
- 12:26Speaker 1: in track, I'll run track, I can hit a ball.
- 12:28Speaker 1: I used to play softball, I used to do this,
- 12:30Speaker 1: do that. But gymnastics kind of just stuck with me
- 12:32Speaker 1: because it was something that I felt like I was
- 12:34Speaker 1: a superhero and I felt like I was able just
- 12:37Speaker 1: to go out there and have fun with it and
- 12:39Speaker 1: not worry about Okay, this, that and the other. So
- 12:44Speaker 1: you know, at first I didn't know what I was doing,
- 12:46Speaker 1: but then once I realized like what everybody else was doing,
- 12:49Speaker 1: I was like, oh, Okay, yeah, I can do this.
- 12:51Speaker 1: This is cool.
- 12:54Speaker 3: You know.
- 12:54Speaker 2: It's interesting too about your story about getting involved with gymnastics,
- 12:57Speaker 2: and I'll let you tell it, But you didn't really
- 13:00Speaker 2: go at first willingly.
- 13:03Speaker 1: No, not at all. I actually was blindfolded and it
- 13:10Speaker 1: was sometime around December of whatever year that was, I remember,
- 13:15Speaker 1: But I was getting picked up from school, I believe,
- 13:20Speaker 1: and they blindfolded me, and as a little kid, you know,
- 13:23Speaker 1: when you blindfold you're thinking, oh, okay, I'm going to
- 13:26Speaker 1: get a present, like this is cool. So I walked
- 13:29Speaker 1: into the gym and they took my blindfold off and
- 13:33Speaker 1: I looked at them and I started crying and I said,
- 13:36Speaker 1: I thought you got me a puppy.
- 13:39Speaker 3: Oh my god.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Yes, that was my first time walking into the gym scenario.
- 13:45Speaker 1: And they looked at me and they're like, oh man,
- 13:47Speaker 1: what did we just do?
- 13:52Speaker 2: But how soon after that moment did you feel like
- 13:54Speaker 2: you were actually like excited to start showing up at
- 13:57Speaker 2: the gym?
- 13:57Speaker 3: Do you remember?
- 13:58Speaker 1: It was like so when they had told me what
- 14:01Speaker 1: it was and what I was doing, I was like, okay,
- 14:04Speaker 1: like sure, I'll try it. And I progressed so fast
- 14:09Speaker 1: that after like the second it was like I was
- 14:11Speaker 1: doing classes there we go. It was my first time.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Like the second day, I went into the class and
- 14:17Speaker 1: I taught myself a lot of the skills that I
- 14:19Speaker 1: did when I was younger. So I taught myself how
- 14:21Speaker 1: to do a car well, I taught myself how to
- 14:23Speaker 1: do a backwalk over and all that because I was
- 14:24Speaker 1: watching like the girls and the other team and stuff.
- 14:29Speaker 1: So three four days later, I was doing classes, doing classes,
- 14:32Speaker 1: and I went up to my mom and a bunch
- 14:34Speaker 1: of people and the bleachers were telling my mom like, yo,
- 14:37Speaker 1: your daughter is so talented. And she was like, you know,
- 14:41Speaker 1: we're just putting her in here just to get her
- 14:43Speaker 1: energy out, like there's nothing right. But then a bunch
- 14:46Speaker 1: of coaches came up to her and was like, hey,
- 14:48Speaker 1: we want her on pre team. Then after that it
- 14:52Speaker 1: was over with. I went to pre team. I was
- 14:56Speaker 1: learning things like really really quick, and it was it
- 15:00Speaker 1: was really fast. It was a fast road for me.
- 15:03Speaker 1: That road was really really fast.
- 15:05Speaker 2: I feel like there's like a reason why so many gymnasts.
- 15:09Speaker 2: I mean, first of all, it's a young sport to
- 15:11Speaker 2: begin with, But why so many gymnasts start so young?
- 15:14Speaker 2: Because it's almost like you need that like next level
- 15:17Speaker 2: of like uninhibited. I'm just gonna do whatever you tell
- 15:21Speaker 2: me to try right now, because as an adult, like
- 15:25Speaker 2: you look at some of the insane, unbelievable stuff that
- 15:29Speaker 2: you guys do on the beam and the bars and
- 15:31Speaker 2: the vault, and I mean all of it, and it's like,
- 15:34Speaker 2: holy sh like it's just insane.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Yes, it definitely is. Like I said, I felt like
- 15:41Speaker 1: I was flying or I was like a superhero half
- 15:43Speaker 1: the time. So learning new skills and seeing what I
- 15:48Speaker 1: was doing, like I can't even comprehend Like if you
- 15:51Speaker 1: if you showed me a video of when I was
- 15:53Speaker 1: younger and what I was doing, I probably in that
- 15:56Speaker 1: moment wasn't even comprehending on what I was doing in general.
- 16:00Speaker 1: I think I was just throwing stuff half the time,
- 16:03Speaker 1: because that's just like what we do when we're younger.
- 16:05Speaker 1: We're like, okay, we'll try this, like let's go. I
- 16:07Speaker 1: guess there's nothing. But now if you told me that,
- 16:10Speaker 1: I'd be like, oh, let me hold on, let me
- 16:12Speaker 1: make sure my back's okay, my shoulders, but oh exactly,
- 16:19Speaker 1: like make maybe like let me think about it a
- 16:22Speaker 1: couple of times. But yeah, definitely when you're younger, those
- 16:26Speaker 1: times were it's just okay, like let's just do it,
- 16:29Speaker 1: see what happens.
- 16:31Speaker 2: And obviously it's like we've all seen like different footage
- 16:35Speaker 2: of famous gymnasts like taking the wrong tumble or taking
- 16:39Speaker 2: a fall or something like that. Do you recall the
- 16:42Speaker 2: first time, maybe I don't know if you had to
- 16:45Speaker 2: get seriously injured, but you took that misstep and how
- 16:48Speaker 2: that made you feel, like did that change your perspective
- 16:52Speaker 2: of what was really going on in that room?
- 16:54Speaker 1: So the very first time that I even attempted some
- 17:00Speaker 1: things like so bad like that was on beam. The
- 17:04Speaker 1: one that I remember, and it was before was at
- 17:08Speaker 1: State or something, and I was on beam and I
- 17:12Speaker 1: was doing a two and a half dismount, so it
- 17:15Speaker 1: was two and a half twist and I hybrided into
- 17:18Speaker 1: my knee like really really badly, to where they were like,
- 17:22Speaker 1: oh my gosh, if you didn't have the quads you do,
- 17:25Speaker 1: your knee would have been gone. And I was like, yeah, like,
- 17:30Speaker 1: oh my gosh, like it's my career over, like what
- 17:33Speaker 1: do I do? But luckily I was able to come back.
- 17:35Speaker 1: But that was the first time I actually like was
- 17:37Speaker 1: like this is definitely a dangerous sport, like anything can happen.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Not being someone that's ever done gymnastics myself, I went
- 17:48Speaker 2: like the ballet like less like scary root for a
- 17:51Speaker 2: little while before I got into soccer and took a
- 17:54Speaker 2: break from sport and then got into running. But not
- 17:56Speaker 2: being in the gymnastics world, what kind of talk is
- 18:00Speaker 2: there about maybe body awareness and like navigating injury like
- 18:05Speaker 2: kind of from the get go, so that you can
- 18:07Speaker 2: prepare yourselves for you know, these potentially really scary moments.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely, I would say, like making sure you are
- 18:16Speaker 1: in the right mind out that moment, because you don't
- 18:18Speaker 1: want to be tired. You don't want to be oh,
- 18:21Speaker 1: I don't feel like doing this. You don't want to
- 18:23Speaker 1: have those thoughts in your head because whatever the last
- 18:25Speaker 1: thing your brain was thinking is what's going to happen.
- 18:29Speaker 1: So if you're saying, oh, I'm tired, then your body,
- 18:32Speaker 1: like how we do our movements, your body, your mind
- 18:35Speaker 1: tells your body what to do. It's all being able
- 18:38Speaker 1: to just be like, Okay, so if I can do
- 18:41Speaker 1: this when I'm sleep, I should be able to do
- 18:43Speaker 1: it when I'm sleep. And so you going into those
- 18:46Speaker 1: skills you really really need to think about like am
- 18:49Speaker 1: I rested enough? Am I able to do this? Do
- 18:52Speaker 1: I need to go tell my coach if something's wrong,
- 18:53Speaker 1: Like you just have to be able to really really
- 18:56Speaker 1: think about what's going to happen.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like it's like a very mind body
- 19:00Speaker 2: connection sport. It's almost like, all right, like I have
- 19:03Speaker 2: mastered this routine. I know what's supposed to happen for
- 19:06Speaker 2: the next four minutes, which seems like it goes by
- 19:09Speaker 2: in a flash but also takes forever. And when you're
- 19:11Speaker 2: out there, it's like in my I mean like when
- 19:14Speaker 2: I'm watching, I'm like, it just feels like it's all
- 19:16Speaker 2: just strung together, so I can totally hear what you're
- 19:19Speaker 2: saying about, like where your mind is at when you
- 19:21Speaker 2: show up. Like that's a very that really makes a
- 19:24Speaker 2: big difference. Yes, let's fast forward toward the.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Olympics, but I don't want to get there just yet.
- 19:29Speaker 2: So after you came back from twenty seventeen and started
- 19:33Speaker 2: getting back into the singles things and training in Texas,
- 19:36Speaker 2: talk to me about when you started to actually get
- 19:39Speaker 2: excited for the idea of heading to Tokyo.
- 19:43Speaker 1: It was actually the two thousand and eight Olympics. I
- 19:47Speaker 1: was watching Sean and Nastia at the time, because my
- 19:53Speaker 1: mom loves the Olympics. She literally will like stay up
- 19:59Speaker 1: for whenever it starts and won't sleep, like literally the
- 20:04Speaker 1: whole entire time. And so at that time that's what
- 20:06Speaker 1: we were doing. In gymnastics was on and so I
- 20:08Speaker 1: was watching and I was like, Mom, I want to
- 20:11Speaker 1: do that. I want to become an Olympian. I didn't
- 20:14Speaker 1: say what's sport. I just said I wanted to become
- 20:16Speaker 1: an Olympian. I wanted to go to the Olympics. And
- 20:19Speaker 1: so at that time, I still wasn't really like in gymnastics.
- 20:22Speaker 1: In gymnastics, I was just playing around, and she was like,
- 20:28Speaker 1: are you sure, And I was like, yeah, like I
- 20:30Speaker 1: believe I can get there, and I'm going to be
- 20:32Speaker 1: an Olympia now. And so knowing now that the sport
- 20:37Speaker 1: I'm in is gymnastics and that I went to the
- 20:40Speaker 1: Olympics and I have an Olympian and all that, it's
- 20:43Speaker 1: pretty cool because it's just like when I was younger,
- 20:46Speaker 1: that younger self. Those are just dreams, you know, we
- 20:49Speaker 1: all dream we all want to see what happens. We
- 20:52Speaker 1: all want to do this. We all want to do that,
- 20:54Speaker 1: and so when this finally came to happen, I was
- 20:57Speaker 1: just like wow, Like.
- 20:58Speaker 2: I mean, at that time, if it wasn't going to
- 21:00Speaker 2: be gymnastics, like what would it even have been.
- 21:02Speaker 1: She wanted me to do track and field, so it
- 21:05Speaker 1: probably would have been track and field, something dealing with
- 21:07Speaker 1: like running, or because of how tiny we are, like
- 21:10Speaker 1: our family's tiny. I mean I could have done volleyball.
- 21:12Speaker 1: I could have been a Librea, I could have done
- 21:15Speaker 1: sincing what.
- 21:16Speaker 3: I feel like running, I mean, running is a part
- 21:18Speaker 3: of your sport too.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Let's talk about Let's let's actually talk a little bit
- 21:22Speaker 2: about that, right because your sport is so much more
- 21:24Speaker 2: than just time like practicing your skill work in the gym.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Talk to us about what a week or so of
- 21:32Speaker 2: training could even involve for you a.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Week or so, Oh my goodness, there's so much that
- 21:37Speaker 1: we do. It just depends. Everybody's schedules are different. For like,
- 21:41Speaker 1: from my team, we go like we practice twice a
- 21:44Speaker 1: day and we do like conditioning, we do cardio. Some
- 21:50Speaker 1: days it depends, we might do like basics here and
- 21:53Speaker 1: there we have some days it might be routines or
- 21:56Speaker 1: parts like. It just depends on what that week looks like.
- 21:59Speaker 1: But on a daily basis, basically we wake up, have practice,
- 22:03Speaker 1: go to practice, come back, take our nap, go back
- 22:07Speaker 1: to practice, come back, eat dinner, and repeat the whole
- 22:10Speaker 1: thing over and over again. So that's basically what a
- 22:13Speaker 1: week looks like, except for on Sundays we don't have practice,
- 22:17Speaker 1: and then Saturday and Thursday we only have one.
- 22:20Speaker 3: You're not practicing at all. It seems very boring.
- 22:22Speaker 1: No, not at all, not at all.
- 22:24Speaker 3: What keeps you motivated right now?
- 22:28Speaker 2: Obviously coming off of the Olympics, do you feel as
- 22:32Speaker 2: though you have that same fire to keep practicing and
- 22:36Speaker 2: keep going after it or after this tour you kind
- 22:39Speaker 2: of looking forward to like a little bit of a break.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Well, actually, I've been practicing this whole time because we
- 22:45Speaker 1: kind of are doing skills that are kind of big
- 22:49Speaker 1: but kind of not really just things that we can
- 22:51Speaker 1: do on like every day because we're on a show.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Well we're on a tour, so you know tours like
- 22:57Speaker 1: it's like artists they sing almost every day. It's like
- 22:59Speaker 1: for us, we had to flip and do that every day.
- 23:02Speaker 1: So we're practicing this whole time. But afterwards I go
- 23:06Speaker 1: off to college, so I have to be prepared for
- 23:08Speaker 1: that because our season starts in January, so I'm kind
- 23:13Speaker 1: of starting up, starting up. But you know, we'll see
- 23:17Speaker 1: what happens in the future future. I don't know what's
- 23:20Speaker 1: gonna happen, but we'll see what happens.
- 23:24Speaker 2: You're like alluding to the fact that you might be
- 23:26Speaker 2: thinking about twenty twenty four, but we're like, not really
- 23:29Speaker 2: thinking about that yet.
- 23:30Speaker 3: We're kind of just gonna feel it out.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, we're just gonna take day by day
- 23:36Speaker 1: and see what happens. You know, I'm not gonna give
- 23:38Speaker 1: you a for sure answer, but it's up there. It's
- 23:42Speaker 1: up there.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Let's flash back then now and talk a little bit
- 23:45Speaker 2: about Tokyo. What did it mean for you to even
- 23:49Speaker 2: have a spot on this team in a year that
- 23:53Speaker 2: was unlike any other?
- 23:55Speaker 1: It was a huge, huge honor. I definitely I'm known
- 23:59Speaker 1: as the underdog in the Black Horse, So being able
- 24:02Speaker 1: to be put on a team with not only a idle,
- 24:08Speaker 1: a inspiration, a hero I don't even know what else
- 24:12Speaker 1: she is, and then also having three other girls there
- 24:17Speaker 1: with us, well four of the girls, how many of
- 24:19Speaker 1: us there, there's six of us, four of the girls
- 24:25Speaker 1: there that were also amazing as well, Like, I think
- 24:27Speaker 1: having the atmosphere that we did was so so, so amazing,
- 24:31Speaker 1: and I'm just happy that I was part of Team
- 24:34Speaker 1: USA in this moment because it's definitely going to be
- 24:36Speaker 1: in history books and it's definitely going to be at
- 24:39Speaker 1: an Olympics. A lot of people are going to talk
- 24:41Speaker 1: about until who knows when, So it was huge. I
- 24:45Speaker 1: loved it.
- 24:47Speaker 2: It's so interesting for me to like, in all the
- 24:50Speaker 2: interviews I've watched with you and listening to podcasts before
- 24:53Speaker 2: having the chance to sit down with you today, you
- 24:56Speaker 2: truly are a woman that lifts up other woman, And
- 25:01Speaker 2: I think it's really beautiful how positively you speak about
- 25:05Speaker 2: your not only your friendship with Simone, but Simone as
- 25:09Speaker 2: your teammate. Sometimes when I'm listening to these interviews, I
- 25:12Speaker 2: almost want to take a step back and.
- 25:14Speaker 3: Be like, but how are you, Jordan, Like how are you?
- 25:18Speaker 2: In that I feel as though, and it makes sense
- 25:22Speaker 2: right because you guys are teammates, but so much of
- 25:24Speaker 2: the focus has been on not only like how you
- 25:29Speaker 2: performed in the Olympics, but how you performed in the
- 25:31Speaker 2: Olympics because you stepped in for your team. So I
- 25:35Speaker 2: guess this is kind of like a multifaceted place that
- 25:38Speaker 2: I'm going with this. But that's really beautiful that you
- 25:42Speaker 2: are such a hype woman. Do you ever feel like
- 25:47Speaker 2: you want to make your own path? That's just Jordan.
- 25:52Speaker 1: I mean, I've thought of it, as thought of it,
- 25:55Speaker 1: but you know, how the world works. It's not about
- 26:00Speaker 1: how like I can present myself any type of way,
- 26:04Speaker 1: but it's how they're gonna take it because a lot
- 26:06Speaker 1: of the things, they don't know what happens behind the scenes,
- 26:09Speaker 1: and they don't know what a lot of us go through.
- 26:12Speaker 1: So in my head, yes, I've thought of okay, like
- 26:15Speaker 1: let's see what happens if Jordan goes this way, or
- 26:17Speaker 1: let's see what happened if Jordan goes this way, But
- 26:20Speaker 1: it all depends on how my puzzle pieces are supposed
- 26:23Speaker 1: to be, like put In, and if they fit, they fit,
- 26:27Speaker 1: and I'm just gonna take that with me and ride
- 26:29Speaker 1: with it. So I mean a lot of the time,
- 26:32Speaker 1: you know, like you said, yes, I'm the hype woman
- 26:35Speaker 1: of everything, and I love being that and I love
- 26:38Speaker 1: being able just to support others in different types of
- 26:40Speaker 1: ways and just being able to be who I am
- 26:43Speaker 1: as a person and doing this for myself, because that's
- 26:46Speaker 1: literally what I've been doing is everything is for myself.
- 26:49Speaker 1: I don't focus on the outsiders. I don't focus on
- 26:51Speaker 1: the expectation that I'm supposed to be giving to people.
- 26:54Speaker 1: I just focus on what I want to do for myself.
- 26:57Speaker 1: And if that's being a teammate, a best friend, sister
- 27:00Speaker 1: to somebody who's great in the world, I'll do that,
- 27:02Speaker 1: and that's what I want to do because I know,
- 27:05Speaker 1: like i'll support her, I'll do this, I'll do that,
- 27:08Speaker 1: I'll do the other. But everything happens for a reason,
- 27:10Speaker 1: Like that's why I go back to, like everything happens
- 27:12Speaker 1: for a reason, And I think this is a pretty
- 27:15Speaker 1: cool reason, knowing that I'm best friends with an Olympian
- 27:19Speaker 1: and somebody who's great in the world and who has
- 27:22Speaker 1: changed the world in many different ways, because it gives
- 27:25Speaker 1: me an eye and a perspective on what maybe I
- 27:28Speaker 1: can do in the future and how I can just
- 27:31Speaker 1: feel like I change the world, like I've changed multiple
- 27:34Speaker 1: different girls, like visuals on how they do their hair,
- 27:37Speaker 1: on how they present themselves and all that and so
- 27:39Speaker 1: just being able to see that from my side, it's
- 27:42Speaker 1: it's pretty cool. I like it.
- 27:44Speaker 2: I love what you said, like being best friends with
- 27:47Speaker 2: an Olympia and it's like, hey, you're also an Olympia,
- 27:50Speaker 2: not just an Olympian, but like a silver medalist.
- 27:53Speaker 3: But I totally heree you.
- 27:54Speaker 2: I mean, it's really beautiful that, like, you have this
- 27:57Speaker 2: opportunity to have someone in your life that not only
- 28:00Speaker 2: supports you but then also inspires you in return. Let
- 28:05Speaker 2: us now talk a little bit about what stepping in
- 28:10Speaker 2: was like for you. I mean, from you know, the
- 28:13Speaker 2: couches sing at home, it totally looked like a fight
- 28:16Speaker 2: or flight kind of situation.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Yeah, that was the most devastating thing I've ever done
- 28:20Speaker 1: in my life. I told her, I was like, this
- 28:23Speaker 1: is a once in a lifetime thing. I'm never doing
- 28:25Speaker 1: this for you again. And she started laughing because it's true,
- 28:29Speaker 1: Like her shoes are so big, and I just wanted
- 28:32Speaker 1: to make sure I made her proud in those moments.
- 28:35Speaker 1: Just being able to be like, Okay, I'm stepping in
- 28:37Speaker 1: for you, like this is crazy. Never thought in the
- 28:40Speaker 1: world I'd be doing that for anybody in general. And
- 28:44Speaker 1: being able just to see like the accomplishment that I
- 28:47Speaker 1: was able to do that. I definitely thought. I thought,
- 28:50Speaker 1: because I knew I had to do something. It was
- 28:51Speaker 1: for the team, it was for her, It's for the
- 28:53Speaker 1: world to see, like, no matter what happens, TMUSA is
- 28:57Speaker 1: a fight, like we're fighters, no matter what. It was
- 28:59Speaker 1: so devastating. My heart was aching because at the same
- 29:03Speaker 1: time I wanted to do it with her. I wanted
- 29:06Speaker 1: to compete with her, competing as well, but you know,
- 29:09Speaker 1: having her there supporting us and being able to say, Okay,
- 29:12Speaker 1: you guys, you got this, you can do this, you
- 29:14Speaker 1: can do that, like I'm here for you was definitely
- 29:17Speaker 1: a different perspective on us because we never got to
- 29:21Speaker 1: see her in that position. She's always the one doing this,
- 29:26Speaker 1: doing that, and we're like, okay, like you got this,
- 29:28Speaker 1: you got this. But having the role switch was definitely
- 29:30Speaker 1: a huge thing, and I think that really opened a
- 29:33Speaker 1: lot of people's eyes, like she's more than just Simon Wiles,
- 29:37Speaker 1: and so I think it was it was pretty cool
- 29:40Speaker 1: for me just to be like, Okay, I'm in your position,
- 29:42Speaker 1: like what do I do now?
- 29:44Speaker 3: But definitely how do the clips? Again? Can someone just
- 29:49Speaker 3: remind me?
- 29:50Speaker 1: It was definitely scary. Scary, but scary, yeah, I was.
- 29:56Speaker 1: But I'm happy, you know, I'm happy that she was
- 29:58Speaker 1: able to see a different side and that we were
- 30:01Speaker 1: able to help her because I felt like we helped her,
- 30:04Speaker 1: you know, That's what I think. I don't know, I
- 30:06Speaker 1: can't speak for the other girls, but I feel like
- 30:08Speaker 1: we helped her and we were able just to be like, Okay,
- 30:12Speaker 1: we support you, how you're supporting us.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Give us a little bit more of like a read
- 30:17Speaker 2: or a vibe of like what it was like to
- 30:19Speaker 2: be on the floor in that arena.
- 30:23Speaker 1: It was definitely a gym come true. It felt like
- 30:26Speaker 1: I was in a fairy tale. At first, I didn't
- 30:28Speaker 1: know what was going on. I was just like, oh
- 30:30Speaker 1: my goodness, like where am I? But then when I
- 30:33Speaker 1: realized after Team Finals and what we were going through
- 30:36Speaker 1: and how everything ended up, it definitely was like, Okay,
- 30:40Speaker 1: I'm not in a dream anymore. This is actually real lifetime,
- 30:43Speaker 1: and I'm very very happy where I am. And I'm
- 30:46Speaker 1: very happy that I was able to even be out
- 30:49Speaker 1: there on that floor just representing Teamy. I say, you know,
- 30:55Speaker 1: it was pretty cool. My vibe. Obviously, you guys saw
- 30:58Speaker 1: I was pumped, I was high, I was just out there.
- 31:02Speaker 1: But you know, at the end of the day, it
- 31:04Speaker 1: was all about making sure we were going to stay
- 31:06Speaker 1: together and just support each other no matter what we
- 31:09Speaker 1: were going through.

- 35:01Speaker 3: Happy Hot. He's everyone.
- 35:09Speaker 2: Probably our whole other vibe. Actually being handed the silver metal.
- 35:14Speaker 2: I mean that that was a.
- 35:19Speaker 1: Huge thing for us as well, because I don't I
- 35:21Speaker 1: really don't even know like what was going through everybody's
- 35:24Speaker 1: brains after Floor and even after Vault in general, because
- 35:28Speaker 1: we were just like, okay, guys, we just gotta go
- 35:30Speaker 1: out there hit do whatever we need to do and
- 35:32Speaker 1: hope that we medal. And just being able to say
- 35:35Speaker 1: that we got a silver medal and knowing that we
- 35:39Speaker 1: did it with all of our heart and joy and
- 35:42Speaker 1: our passion was it was amazing. That silver metal was
- 35:45Speaker 1: like my shield. Lets me know, like, Okay, all that
- 35:48Speaker 1: ache and pain and stress you went through in the
- 35:51Speaker 1: past and in the moments and all that is definitely
- 35:55Speaker 1: like it shielded in that metal. So I'm just really
- 35:58Speaker 1: excited and I'm happy that we were able to do
- 36:00Speaker 1: what we did out there, because that was a lie.
- 36:02Speaker 1: It was stressful, but you know, we fought.
- 36:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll never forget.
- 36:06Speaker 2: I feel like I was like making coffee on the
- 36:09Speaker 2: morning that you were on the Today Show. I think
- 36:11Speaker 2: it was like that maybe the day after you won
- 36:13Speaker 2: silver when they like sprung Michael Phelps on you.
- 36:16Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, Yes, it was on the Today Show.
- 36:22Speaker 1: We had to do our end.
- 36:23Speaker 2: That moment lives ren free in my mind of like
- 36:25Speaker 2: me thinking about being twenty years old and like being
- 36:28Speaker 2: offered like like a superhero, like on a silver platter
- 36:32Speaker 2: in front of like all of America.
- 36:34Speaker 1: That was crazy. I literally was just like in awe
- 36:38Speaker 1: because they had told us, they told us he was there,
- 36:41Speaker 1: but I was like, is there any way I could
- 36:43Speaker 1: meet him? And they were like, well, we can see
- 36:45Speaker 1: what we can do. And I was like okay. So
- 36:47Speaker 1: I was sitting there and they offered us sushi or
- 36:49Speaker 1: whatever or something like that, and I was like, Okay,
- 36:54Speaker 1: we're sitting there, Dada, we're gonna eat sushi, We're gonna
- 36:56Speaker 1: do this. And the next thing, you know, he just
- 36:58Speaker 1: pops up and I was like, oh my gosh, my
- 37:01Speaker 1: Mom's probably gonna kill me. Like it just it just
- 37:05Speaker 1: came out. I was like, oh, what did I just say?
- 37:08Speaker 1: Because I was so starstruck that he was standing right
- 37:10Speaker 1: in front of me.
- 37:13Speaker 2: I loved witnessing this aside from Phelps, Like, was there
- 37:16Speaker 2: anyone else on the ground in Tokyo that you came
- 37:19Speaker 2: into contact with and you were like, oh my god.
- 37:22Speaker 1: We met the softball team and they did. They were,
- 37:27Speaker 1: first off, they're really tall.
- 37:29Speaker 3: I was like, yeahay, compared to you guys, I was like, oh.
- 37:32Speaker 1: My gosh, my nay. But yeah, we met, like the
- 37:35Speaker 1: softball team. There's obviously a lot of people that I
- 37:39Speaker 1: wish I could have met, but you know, the whole
- 37:41Speaker 1: COVID protocols that we had to do, and we weren't
- 37:44Speaker 1: staying in the Olympic village and all that stuff, so
- 37:48Speaker 1: I think he was the only one.
- 37:50Speaker 3: Maybe it a little challenging.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Yeah, it kind of was. But at the same time,
- 37:53Speaker 1: I'm kind of happy that we were able just to
- 37:57Speaker 1: be in our own little world because we kind of
- 38:00Speaker 1: were there. We were there longer than everybody else, basically
- 38:05Speaker 1: because we were there before the Olympics even started, and
- 38:08Speaker 1: we ended to a day before closing ceremony, so it
- 38:14Speaker 1: was like we were everywhere. Even if we tried to
- 38:18Speaker 1: find people and meet them, it would have been too.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Hard and you had to quarantine for the full time
- 38:24Speaker 2: once you got there.
- 38:25Speaker 1: Right, Yes, we had a quarantine and we had to
- 38:27Speaker 1: do spit tubes every morning.
- 38:30Speaker 2: Spit tubes talk sweet, so literally just spitting into a
- 38:33Speaker 2: tube and then they test it for COVID and then
- 38:34Speaker 2: you go about your day.
- 38:37Speaker 1: Oh my god, it was really nasty.
- 38:41Speaker 3: What's the uh, what's like the COVID protocol right now?
- 38:44Speaker 3: For you on the tour?
- 38:45Speaker 1: So basically we have to be masked the whole time,
- 38:49Speaker 1: like right now, like when we're out and about. Even
- 38:52Speaker 1: if the state or whatever has their own code protocols
- 38:56Speaker 1: and they don't have to wear a mask, we still
- 38:58Speaker 1: have to wear a mask due to as we're still
- 39:01Speaker 1: traveling and all that. We don't want any of us
- 39:03Speaker 1: to get COVID. We all stay in our own rooms,
- 39:07Speaker 1: we all have like different buses. We can't go on
- 39:10Speaker 1: to each other's buses basically, like we can do like
- 39:17Speaker 1: like if we want to go out to eat, we
- 39:19Speaker 1: can go do that, but we just have to be masked.
- 39:22Speaker 1: If we leave to like a different state, say like
- 39:25Speaker 1: we have an off day and we have to go
- 39:27Speaker 1: do like a photo shoot or something somewhere else, we
- 39:30Speaker 1: have to get tested when we get back.
- 39:32Speaker 3: So I do want to pivot a little bit right
- 39:34Speaker 3: now and talk a little bit.
- 39:36Speaker 2: I mean, you were saying earlier that you know that
- 39:38Speaker 2: you've had the opportunity to inspire so many young women
- 39:42Speaker 2: in so many different ways. For you coming into your
- 39:47Speaker 2: own I cannot even imagine how I would have navigated
- 39:52Speaker 2: being twenty years old and having so many eyes on me.
- 39:57Speaker 2: So I want to talk to you a little bit.
- 39:58Speaker 2: I guess about that and what it's been like for
- 40:01Speaker 2: you to come into your own with again just kind
- 40:07Speaker 2: of being a little bit under a magnifying glass.
- 40:10Speaker 1: Well, I haven't really thought of it that way.
- 40:16Speaker 3: How do you? How do you think about it?
- 40:17Speaker 1: I mean personally, like a lot of people, when people
- 40:20Speaker 1: are like, oh my gosh, you're so famous, you're this,
- 40:22Speaker 1: you're that, I like, look at them, like, huh, who
- 40:25Speaker 1: are you talking about? Because I don't even consider myself famous.
- 40:29Speaker 1: I barely consider myself an Olympian at this moment. Like
- 40:32Speaker 1: even when I say, I'm like that's me, Like what,
- 40:35Speaker 1: Like I okay? Cool. So when when people like say
- 40:41Speaker 1: you're my idol, you're my inspiration, you're my hero, You've
- 40:45Speaker 1: helped me through tough times, this, that and the other,
- 40:48Speaker 1: it's like a really really like heartwarming situation that I
- 40:52Speaker 1: love because it makes me feel like, Okay, when I
- 40:56Speaker 1: was younger, it was hard for me to find the
- 40:59Speaker 1: things that you guys found in me. So it was
- 41:02Speaker 1: definitely like it was like they're like trigger moments. I'm
- 41:07Speaker 1: just like, oh my gosh, like you felt that like
- 41:09Speaker 1: what I did, You felt that in you, Like it
- 41:11Speaker 1: took me a while just to even find out for myself.
- 41:13Speaker 1: So it's pretty cool. It's pretty amazing that I have
- 41:17Speaker 1: little ones looking up to me and being like, oh
- 41:20Speaker 1: my gosh, you're my favorite, Like you've helped me discover
- 41:23Speaker 1: like I can do this with my hair and this,
- 41:25Speaker 1: and like it's pretty cool just to realize, like, wow,
- 41:30Speaker 1: I've put a huge impact on a lot of girls out.
- 41:33Speaker 2: There, So you keep coming back to the hair moment. Yes,
- 41:36Speaker 2: can we talk about that a little bit, like why
- 41:37Speaker 2: is it the hair moment for you?
- 41:39Speaker 1: So when I was younger, I went to an all
- 41:42Speaker 1: white school and every single girl just loved touching my
- 41:48Speaker 1: hair and I never knew why, and it kind of
- 41:51Speaker 1: made me feel like, okay, like you guys need to
- 41:54Speaker 1: stop touching my hair, Like okay, I get it, it's
- 41:57Speaker 1: curly cool, whatever. And I didn't really like embrace my
- 42:01Speaker 1: curls at that moment because of that, and so I
- 42:04Speaker 1: always wanted my hair straight, always wanted it straight, and
- 42:07Speaker 1: it was something that my mom didn't like because she
- 42:10Speaker 1: was like, your curls are so beautiful this time. I'm like,
- 42:12Speaker 1: and then I would tell her, but people are touching it.
- 42:14Speaker 1: I don't like it, and da da dah and all
- 42:16Speaker 1: this stuff. So it took me a while to really
- 42:18Speaker 1: embrace my own curls until my very first competition and
- 42:25Speaker 1: I wore a poof and all of a sudden, it
- 42:29Speaker 1: was just like Jordan Child's new hair, this that, and
- 42:34Speaker 1: little girls doing this, doing that, and I was just like, mom,
- 42:37Speaker 1: what's going on? Because I was young. I was like
- 42:40Speaker 1: thirteen at that time, so I was like, what's going on?
- 42:42Speaker 1: And she was like, your poof inspired young younger girls
- 42:46Speaker 1: out there to let their hair do what they want
- 42:48Speaker 1: to do and not go against like and not having
- 42:51Speaker 1: in a bun and do this. And I was like,
- 42:53Speaker 1: oh okay. Still didn't think of anything until recently, like
- 42:58Speaker 1: maybe three four years ago. I was just like, you
- 43:01Speaker 1: know what, I'm just gonna keep embracing it and see
- 43:03Speaker 1: what happens. And ever since then, girls have been coming
- 43:07Speaker 1: up to me, Jordan, you. I love how you did
- 43:09Speaker 1: your hair this time and this time, and I've done tribal,
- 43:12Speaker 1: I've done this, I've done that because it's like, my
- 43:14Speaker 1: hair is my crown and it's my beauty and I'm
- 43:17Speaker 1: gonna take that with me when whatever I do. And
- 43:20Speaker 1: that's basically how how the younger girls saw it, as in,
- 43:24Speaker 1: if Jordan can do this, I'm gonna do it too.
- 43:27Speaker 2: You mentioned you mentioned earlier going to college. Talk to
- 43:31Speaker 2: me a little bit about how you feel about that.
- 43:33Speaker 1: I'm so excited. I don't even think like I can't
- 43:38Speaker 1: wait personally like I cannot wait. I can't wait just
- 43:41Speaker 1: to be able to go out there and have that
- 43:44Speaker 1: college experience and being able to be with the team
- 43:48Speaker 1: and exploring new things and making new friends and doing
- 43:52Speaker 1: I don't even know like what college people do basically,
- 43:55Speaker 1: but I think it's gonna be fun. I can't wait
- 43:58Speaker 1: to finally start competing for them UCLA. The Bruins have
- 44:02Speaker 1: always been since I was I don't know, eighth grade.
- 44:08Speaker 1: Whenever you're how old are you then? Thirteen? For twelve thirteen? Yeah,
- 44:11Speaker 1: that's how long I had been with UCLA.
- 44:15Speaker 3: Amazing. I mean, it sounds like it's going to be
- 44:17Speaker 3: so good.
- 44:17Speaker 2: And do you expect that you'll still be able to
- 44:20Speaker 2: see your family a lot being over in California?
- 44:23Speaker 1: Or I can only tell you my family's gonna be
- 44:27Speaker 1: there all the time. I'm the youngest of five, so
- 44:31Speaker 1: it's going to be a constant. I'm coming to LA
- 44:33Speaker 1: this week because that they have nobody no more kids.
- 44:38Speaker 2: Such a big theme for USA Gymnastics this year talking
- 44:41Speaker 2: about mental health. Do you feel as though, because this
- 44:44Speaker 2: conversation has kind of come to the forefront, that there
- 44:46Speaker 2: are more resources available to you or do you feel
- 44:50Speaker 2: still like it's your responsibility to seek them out.
- 44:53Speaker 1: A lot of the time. So I don't even know.
- 44:57Speaker 1: Way back when they offered a sports psychologists to help
- 45:02Speaker 1: with whatever we need. And it was kind of like,
- 45:06Speaker 1: if you want to do it, you do it. If
- 45:08Speaker 1: you don't, then you don't. But after without dealing with
- 45:13Speaker 1: USAG and all that and just going on about like
- 45:17Speaker 1: what you want to do, it's what you want to do.
- 45:19Speaker 1: Nobody can control if you want to go to a
- 45:22Speaker 1: sports psychologist, if you want to go to therapy, if
- 45:25Speaker 1: you want to do this, if you want to do that.
- 45:27Speaker 1: It should be all based on what you want to do,
- 45:30Speaker 1: and so they really take that into consideration, like I'm
- 45:33Speaker 1: not going to force this person to do this or
- 45:36Speaker 1: give you this team and think that this team is
- 45:39Speaker 1: good for you. It's all about like, Okay, this is
- 45:42Speaker 1: what I want to do, just how I want to
- 45:43Speaker 1: do it, and that's it. So it just depends on
- 45:48Speaker 1: who you want to be. Like, for instance, me personally
- 45:54Speaker 1: my sports psychologist, I was just like, okay, this is
- 45:57Speaker 1: this is how long I want to do it, and
- 45:59Speaker 1: this is how long I need you for and then
- 46:01Speaker 1: I'll see if I want to come back. And she
- 46:03Speaker 1: was like okay, So it like like I said, it
- 46:06Speaker 1: just depends on who you are.
- 46:07Speaker 2: I would say, uh, it's pretty cool that you've had
- 46:10Speaker 2: the opportunity to do something like that, and it's super
- 46:15Speaker 2: interesting in today's climate where so many experts will say
- 46:20Speaker 2: that taking the time to quote unquote exercise your mental
- 46:24Speaker 2: health or deal with your mental health is just as important,
- 46:27Speaker 2: if not more important, than spending that time in the gym.
- 46:30Speaker 1: Yes, definitely. Like I said before, our mind tells our
- 46:34Speaker 1: body what to do, so if our minds aren't in
- 46:36Speaker 1: the right position, we could get hurt, like really really
- 46:40Speaker 1: bad or even like not have an amazing practice. So
- 46:44Speaker 1: mental health is something that a lot of us do
- 46:47Speaker 1: go through because you never, like gymnasis is a crucial
- 46:52Speaker 1: and drama sport, like it's really really bad, but being able.
- 46:58Speaker 1: A lot of the girls at my gym go see
- 47:01Speaker 1: a sports psychologist and they're younger than me only because
- 47:05Speaker 1: of what they've gone through, and so they need to
- 47:07Speaker 1: be able to speak out and speak to somebody who
- 47:09Speaker 1: can understand and feel like, Okay, this person knows what
- 47:13Speaker 1: I'm going through type, so you know, it just it
- 47:17Speaker 1: just depends. I mean, I know a lot of people
- 47:19Speaker 1: who are older than me and are still going to
- 47:21Speaker 1: the sports psychologists because it's not just an athletes, it's
- 47:25Speaker 1: in everybody. Everybody has something that's mentally will they say
- 47:28Speaker 1: something no, But I feel like a lot of the
- 47:31Speaker 1: time you can feel it from somebody, and that's what
- 47:36Speaker 1: That's how I am. Like if I feel like something's
- 47:38Speaker 1: not right with you, and then two days later you're
- 47:41Speaker 1: just like, oh my goodness, Like I I was so
- 47:44Speaker 1: not in the right like because I felt that, and
- 47:46Speaker 1: I can be like, oh, yeah, I know, I felt
- 47:48Speaker 1: that from you. So that's how it is with me. Yeah,
- 47:51Speaker 1: I can feel when people are in the not really
- 47:54Speaker 1: in their right mind.
- 47:55Speaker 2: Half the time, you have that intuition. You have that
- 47:58Speaker 2: intuition now going forward. I mean you had spoken about
- 48:01Speaker 2: having a negative experience with coaches in the past. Talk
- 48:05Speaker 2: to me about who you're working with now and perhaps
- 48:09Speaker 2: maybe who you'll be working with at UCLA.
- 48:11Speaker 1: So right now, my coaches are Laurent and Ciscil from
- 48:17Speaker 1: they go to WCC, and it's been amazing. They literally
- 48:22Speaker 1: brought the love of the sport back to me and
- 48:24Speaker 1: I was able to actually feel comfortable speaking up and
- 48:28Speaker 1: saying this and saying that, and just being able to
- 48:31Speaker 1: actually have fun with my sport. They're amazing coaches. I
- 48:35Speaker 1: wouldn't change the world for them because literally it was
- 48:38Speaker 1: a fun, fun ride to have them with me on
- 48:41Speaker 1: my journey and just feeling like I was able to
- 48:44Speaker 1: do something again. So I love them to death like
- 48:48Speaker 1: a lot. I'm gonna miss them, but you know, I
- 48:52Speaker 1: gotta move on. I gotta move on. And then yes, yes,
- 48:58Speaker 1: and then for UCLA. Chris Waller is the head coach
- 49:03Speaker 1: of the UCLA gymnastics team, so I've known him since
- 49:08Speaker 1: I was little as well. And it's gonna be it's
- 49:11Speaker 1: gonna be really fun. We're gonna see what we can
- 49:12Speaker 1: do with the team and how everything gets put out
- 49:16Speaker 1: there and how lineups go and competitions and all that.
- 49:19Speaker 1: So it's gonna be really fun. Hopefully we'll do big
- 49:21Speaker 1: things for the NCAA's and all that, and I can't
- 49:25Speaker 1: wait to finally be on that that solid soil.
- 49:32Speaker 2: Well, I'm sure that everyone's going to be rooting for
- 49:34Speaker 2: you to do just that. When you think right now,
- 49:37Speaker 2: I mean when I go to your social media page,
- 49:40Speaker 2: I look at you. Obviously, everyone knows you to be
- 49:43Speaker 2: Jordan Chiles, the silver medalist, the gymnast, Simon Bile's best friend.
- 49:48Speaker 2: You've got a hell of a lot of followers. Four
- 49:51Speaker 2: hundred and fourty one thousand people. When you look in
- 49:54Speaker 2: the mirror, what is it that you see looking back
- 49:58Speaker 2: at you?
- 49:59Speaker 1: A little girl who had big dreams that are finally
- 50:02Speaker 1: coming true.
- 50:03Speaker 3: I love that.
- 50:04Speaker 2: Oh, I just got kill. What other goals do you
- 50:10Speaker 2: have on the horizon? I mean, i'd say that going
- 50:12Speaker 2: to the Olympics is a pretty big one. But what
- 50:14Speaker 2: else excites you right now? What else are you excited
- 50:16Speaker 2: to go after?
- 50:17Speaker 1: Well, I want to get into acting and stunt doubling,
- 50:23Speaker 1: So I don't know, there's like a lot of things
- 50:27Speaker 1: that I want to do. I want to be in
- 50:29Speaker 1: a Marvel movie. A lot of people say my voice
- 50:32Speaker 1: can be in like a cartoon, so I don't know
- 50:36Speaker 1: what they said. I would be really like really good
- 50:39Speaker 1: at voiceovers, and I was like, what, okay, anyways.
- 50:44Speaker 3: Well, Jordan, people used to tell me that, and then
- 50:46Speaker 3: I started a podcast, so maybe you're going to start
- 50:49Speaker 3: a podcast.
- 50:49Speaker 1: Maybe maybe I'll start a podcast. I want to get
- 50:53Speaker 1: into I mean, I do have my own business and everything,
- 50:57Speaker 1: so I want to continue the business part of it.
- 51:00Speaker 1: That's why I'm going to be majoring in his business
- 51:03Speaker 1: for school, which is a lot of people keep telling
- 51:06Speaker 1: me that's so hard. I'm like, I like math, so
- 51:08Speaker 1: I think I should be fine. And then I want
- 51:12Speaker 1: to get into like hopefully real estate one day. That's
- 51:15Speaker 1: something that I kind of have been thinking about. My
- 51:18Speaker 1: mom's an interior designer, so hopefully like we can like
- 51:23Speaker 1: put our two works together and make do really big things.
- 51:27Speaker 1: So I think that'd be really cool.
- 51:28Speaker 2: I love the array of things here, like business, major, stunt, double,
- 51:34Speaker 2: real estate.
- 51:36Speaker 1: I'm an all the way. I'm all everything type of girl.
- 51:39Speaker 1: I love the entertainment side. One thing that I really
- 51:42Speaker 1: want to do, though, is be a backup dancer for
- 51:45Speaker 1: somebody or even in a music.
- 51:47Speaker 3: Day stop it, yeah.
- 51:49Speaker 1: I really like I really want to be a backup
- 51:51Speaker 1: dancer for just someone. I don't care, like, I just
- 51:53Speaker 1: want to be a backup dancer or be in a
- 51:56Speaker 1: music video. That's something that I've just always wanted to
- 51:59Speaker 1: do because I think it's cool. I don't know it just.
- 52:02Speaker 3: It is cool. It is cool. Wait, but if you could,
- 52:05Speaker 3: if you could pick anyone, who you going with? Normany
- 52:09Speaker 3: Oh wow, I love this Breeze.
- 52:11Speaker 1: She's like she's literally my favorite artist. Like I don't know,
- 52:16Speaker 1: I feel like we're like ever since fifth harmony days.
- 52:20Speaker 1: When I look at her, she looks a lot like
- 52:23Speaker 1: my cousin on my dad's side for some reason, well
- 52:27Speaker 1: I don't know why. So ever, since then, I've thought
- 52:30Speaker 1: I was related to her. So, you know, I just
- 52:32Speaker 1: had to say it. I just had to put it
- 52:34Speaker 1: out there.
- 52:34Speaker 3: Natural fit, all right, Normani. If this gets to your people.
- 52:39Speaker 2: Jordan Childs wants in your next video, yes, and you
- 52:47Speaker 2: speaking into existence, you know how it works.
- 52:49Speaker 1: I know.
- 52:53Speaker 2: I would love to ask you. As we kind of
- 52:55Speaker 2: finish up here. You mentioned again being having this opportunity
- 52:59Speaker 2: to be a role model for so many young women.
- 53:03Speaker 2: When you think about some of the biggest lessons that
- 53:07Speaker 2: you've learned over this past year, what is it that
- 53:11Speaker 2: you want to tell them to.
- 53:14Speaker 1: Never give up, to always thrive for something bigger, and
- 53:20Speaker 1: just to realize, like, no matter what is being thrown
- 53:25Speaker 1: at you or the expectations, to know that you're doing
- 53:27Speaker 1: it for yourself and not for anybody else, and you know,
- 53:32Speaker 1: just have fun with it. I'm all about fun. That's literally,
- 53:35Speaker 1: like my motto is fun fun fun, Like just go
- 53:38Speaker 1: out there, have fun, do what you love, and you
- 53:41Speaker 1: should be able to enjoy the rest of your career
- 53:44Speaker 1: and what you want to do in life. I mean
- 53:45Speaker 1: I say that for everybody, like literally everybody, not just athletes,
- 53:49Speaker 1: like artists in different types of way, like just go
- 53:53Speaker 1: out there and have fun because you never know what's
- 53:55Speaker 1: going to happen in the future. You never know if
- 53:57Speaker 1: this is going to be your last chance. You never
- 53:59Speaker 1: know if this is going to be something that you'll
- 54:02Speaker 1: never do again. So you just want to go out there,
- 54:04Speaker 1: have fun with it and enjoy the moments that you
- 54:06Speaker 1: have and experiences. I can even say my favorite quote
- 54:10Speaker 1: is my own quote that I made up, is always
- 54:12Speaker 1: believe in the power of your dreams. Your dreams are
- 54:15Speaker 1: bigger than you think, and if you believe hard enough,
- 54:17Speaker 1: they'll come true. So that's what I got to say.
- 54:20Speaker 3: It's a good one. It's a good one. It's a
- 54:22Speaker 3: good one. All right.
- 54:23Speaker 2: Well, you're great at offering advice. I'm going to ask
- 54:25Speaker 2: you for one last piece of it right now.
- 54:28Speaker 3: You have an.

- 54:34Speaker 2: was like, Nope, I'm out, I want nothing to do
- 54:37Speaker 2: with this one piece of advice. Looking back on that
- 54:41Speaker 2: hurdle moment, right now, what do you tell her.
- 54:45Speaker 1: You believed you could and so you did.
- 54:49Speaker 3: Killing it.
