- 0:00Speaker 1: This is a story of why you should read labels
- 0:06Speaker 1: closely when you buy things. Okay. Now, Katie's got a
- 0:09Speaker 1: picture she'll put up here at x96. com slash live. I
- 0:13Speaker 1: just took that on my way out of the house
- 0:15Speaker 1: this morning. This is something that I bought at the
- 0:17Speaker 1: Utah State Liquor Store.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Okay.
- 0:20Speaker 1: And that's the side of the... There were four cans
- 0:23Speaker 1: in there. Okay. And it's called Afterverse Espresso Martini... It
- 0:29Speaker 1: says at the top, organic brewed cocktails. Okay. Espresso martini
- 0:34Speaker 1: with a hint of vanilla.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Well, that sounds delicious.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Brewed coffee cocktail with other natural flavors. Okay. Four cans,
- 0:42Speaker 1: two servings per can, it says on there.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Okay.
- 0:46Speaker 1: And I was checking. Oh, it's zero sugar. 10% alcohol
- 0:51Speaker 1: by volume.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Okay.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I was checking out at the liquor store, and these
- 0:55Speaker 1: were discontinued. They've discontinued this, and it was half price.
- 1:00Speaker 1: And I thought, well, you know, I'll try it. So
- 1:03Speaker 1: I get it home, and I chill a can of
- 1:05Speaker 1: this stuff. And I just, I taste it, and I go,
- 1:11Speaker 1: this is dreadful. And then I look more closely at
- 1:15Speaker 1: the labeling, and it doesn't say it on this part
- 1:19Speaker 1: at all. But on the can, it says, oh, maybe
- 1:23Speaker 1: it does say it. No. Yeah, oh, yeah, there it does.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Right at the bottom, under four cans and per servings.
- 1:29Speaker 1: in really small letter, federal classification, flavored beer.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Well, that's not a marketing.
- 1:37Speaker 1: No, not at all.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Flavored beer?
- 1:40Speaker 1: Yeah, so what drew my attention to that, because I
- 1:43Speaker 1: was looking to see how much alcohol was in it,
- 1:46Speaker 1: and it said, there are no spirits in this product.
- 1:48Speaker 1: I thought, what? What is it, what? And then I
- 1:51Speaker 1: noticed at the very bottom, flavored beer.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Now, If I had read that closely, I would never
- 2:00Speaker 2: have bought it, even if it was half price.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Well, now I see why it's been discontinued.
- 2:06Speaker 1: I do too. I, I, there was one can, which
- 2:09Speaker 1: I drank half of and said, Nope, I can't do
- 2:12Speaker 1: this because it's just not. And I'm sorry. It's just
- 2:15Speaker 1: not very good either. Maybe some people like it. That's okay.
- 2:18Speaker 1: That's okay. But, but it, it certainly doesn't taste like a,
- 2:21Speaker 1: an espresso martini. And, in any way.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Because an espresso martini has vodka in it, right?
- 2:26Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Vodka or gin, and yeah. The word martini is very
- 2:30Speaker 1: large on that label.
- 2:32Speaker 2: This says, organic alcohol base, a smooth proprietary alcohol base
- 2:37Speaker 2: brewed from ancient grains, including quinoa, millet.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Cassava root. That's beer.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Oh, it was terrible. You know, and I feel, I
- 2:48Speaker 1: felt kind of like a sucker. But again, And I
- 2:51Speaker 1: bet it's happened to other people too, not with just
- 2:53Speaker 1: this product, but you buy something and you haven't looked
- 2:56Speaker 1: at it closely enough. And you get it home and
- 2:59Speaker 1: you go, oh my, what? This happened to me again,
- 3:03Speaker 1: actually fairly recently, with a pair of shoes that I
- 3:07Speaker 1: ordered online. And I need sort of sturdy shoes because
- 3:13Speaker 1: I wear a brace on one of my right foot.
- 3:16Speaker 1: And I need shoes. And they're shoes that have to
- 3:18Speaker 1: be able to flex so that I can get them
- 3:22Speaker 1: over the brace, but still retain a lot of rigidity
- 3:26Speaker 1: in the shoe itself. And I've had really good luck with,
- 3:30Speaker 1: these are Ultras, and pretty good luck with Hoka's. I
- 3:35Speaker 1: have a pair of Hoka's. But I forget the brand
- 3:37Speaker 1: that I saw. And it looked like, oh, I'll bet
- 3:40Speaker 1: this will fit on my foot with the brace. Because
- 3:43Speaker 1: the shoe has to be able to stretch and to
- 3:46Speaker 1: fit over. So I get the shoe, and they're just
- 3:49Speaker 1: I paid over $ 100 for them, and they have absolutely
- 3:53Speaker 1: no support at all. And I should have read closer
- 3:56Speaker 1: the description of the shoes, because they do say these
- 4:00Speaker 1: are designed to feel like you're not wearing shoes.
- 4:05Speaker 3: So there's not a lot of support.
- 4:07Speaker 1: There's not, and I didn't really pay attention to that.
- 4:10Speaker 1: All I paid attention to was that they were very flexible.
- 4:13Speaker 3: So did you wear them around, or can you return them?
- 4:16Speaker 1: I wore them around. for a little while, and every
- 4:20Speaker 1: time I put them on, I said, oh, wait, I
- 4:22Speaker 1: can't walk around in these. I don't like them. And
- 4:24Speaker 1: so my wife said, put them in the yard sale.
- 4:27Speaker 1: I said, but I barely paid over $ 100 for them,
- 4:32Speaker 1: and I barely worn them. Put them in the yard
- 4:36Speaker 1: sale because you don't want to wear them, and every
- 4:39Speaker 1: time you look at them, it'll make you mad.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Did you sell them?
- 4:44Speaker 1: You know, I don't know. I don't know if they
- 4:47Speaker 1: sold or not. So just a cautionary tale. I don't
- 4:51Speaker 1: know if you guys can think of any examples where
- 4:53Speaker 1: you've done that, of not reading closely enough about something
- 4:57Speaker 1: you're buying.
- 4:58Speaker 3: This is a dumb thing that I just noticed last night.
- 5:01Speaker 1: What's that?
- 5:02Speaker 2: I went to take some melatonin. I like the gummy,
- 5:07Speaker 2: the melatonin gummy. And it says on the label, melatonin gummy,
- 5:11Speaker 2: 10 milligrams. And I've been taking this for, I don't know,
- 5:15Speaker 2: two weeks or something. And for some reason, I looked
- 5:18Speaker 2: at the label a little more closely and it says
- 5:21Speaker 2: 10 milligrams. And then in smaller print, it says two
- 5:25Speaker 2: five milligram gummies equal 10 milligrams. And I was just
- 5:29Speaker 2: taking one thinking, well, it's 10 milligrams.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Does it work?
- 5:33Speaker 2: Yeah, but so this is what I'm like, oh, I
- 5:36Speaker 2: thought I was taking more than I was and it
- 5:39Speaker 2: still was working.
- 5:40Speaker 3: So it's kind of a good thing.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Yeah, probably because also because you would probably be groggy
- 5:45Speaker 1: when you open it.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Yeah, but it was weird.
- 5:46Speaker 2: It's like if you see something that says 10 milligram melatonin,
- 5:49Speaker 2: I'm like, I think one of those is 10 milligram.
- 5:52Speaker 1: No. Yeah, that happens a lot. I like it when
- 5:55Speaker 1: they put on labels on pills and also on, like
- 6:00Speaker 1: I was buying some bandages the other day, some Band-Aid stuff.
- 6:03Speaker 1: And where they put a picture of it on the
- 6:06Speaker 1: container and they say, this is the actual size of
- 6:10Speaker 1: the product you're buying. Because if I read what area
- 6:15Speaker 1: does a bandage cover, I'm not very good with that
- 6:18Speaker 1: sort of, like if it says it's a three millimeter
- 6:22Speaker 1: by ten millimeter. I don't know how big that is.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Well, it fit around my finger.
- 6:27Speaker 1: That's what I want to know. But then a lot
- 6:29Speaker 1: of them on the box will have a picture saying
- 6:32Speaker 1: this is the actual size. And the same thing with pills.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Although that doesn't bother me because I can swallow huge
- 6:39Speaker 1: pills and it doesn't bother me. But they'll put on
- 6:42Speaker 1: it like I have these vitamin C tablets. And they're
- 6:46Speaker 1: really big from Costco. And they have that actual size
- 6:50Speaker 1: on the bottle. All right. Let the buyer beware. Indeed.
