- 0:00SPEAKER_02: In this episode, it's all about you.
- 0:02SPEAKER_02: Come in there.
- 0:21SPEAKER_02: Welcome.
- 0:22SPEAKER_02: It's season seven.
- 0:23SPEAKER_02: I'm not even sure.
- 0:24SPEAKER_02: Is it season seven?
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: Is it just a special episode?
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: We don't know.
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: Brendan's been a diva, so we don't know where we're going with this.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: Um not you're not being a diva, I'm sure that's going to come later when his already inflated head gets even bigger.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Um where do we start?
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: Before I get into it, this it's really nice to be back in a room.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: We've done no prep before this.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: We haven't even talked.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: Um, so we're just straight in, being as candid as you like.
- 0:52SPEAKER_02: What's going on, guys?
- 0:54SPEAKER_03: You will.
- 0:55SPEAKER_03: I'll let you start.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm good.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: It's been it's been a it's been a chaotic couple months, but it I've been I've been really good still.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: But it's not all, it's not it's not all about me, it's like 95% about me.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Let's also put the let's also let's also address the fact that that someone in this world, and actually a really nice person, is actually crazy enough to marry Brendan.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Jesus Christ.
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, maybe I'll do a really formal one on behalf of Let's Tit Together.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: We'd like to send our heartfelt congratulations to Brendan Creed and Madeline Hinch for their engagement to be.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Thanks, guys.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, what a crazy how did you do it?
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: How did you how did you pop the question?
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: Uh we went on an 11-day road trip through Scotland, um, and uh did it up in the Isle of Sky.
- 1:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, not too a little bit stressful, but not too bad.
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: Um by the way, no one tells you, and this is serious.
- 2:03SPEAKER_03: I said this to Phil.
- 2:04SPEAKER_03: I'm annoyed he didn't tell me.
- 2:06SPEAKER_03: As a really good friend, I'm annoyed he didn't tell me.
- 2:08SPEAKER_03: It is the most stressful thing I think I've ever done in my entire life, was proposed.
- 2:14SPEAKER_03: Comfortably the most stressful thing.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: Is that because you were just you wanted it to go right, or you were nervous you'd say no?
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: Uh combo of the both.
- 2:23SPEAKER_03: Um but it is like everything boils down to like literally a few seconds.
- 2:29SPEAKER_03: Like that is oh, it's horrible.
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: It's not that hard.
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: You know what the hell?
- 2:35SPEAKER_03: It's not that hard.
- 2:36SPEAKER_03: No, I'm not saying it's hard, I'm saying it's just scary.
- 2:40SPEAKER_03: I think it's quite nice though.
- 2:42SPEAKER_03: I think if it's scary, it's like a it's a weird thing.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: I think if it's scary, you still know you're really lucky to be with that person.
- 2:46SPEAKER_03: Do you know what I mean?
- 2:47SPEAKER_03: Let's face it, I'm lucky to be with Manny.
- 2:49SPEAKER_03: Let's let's not be around the bush here.
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: Um Jesus Christ, this has got soft already.
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: I've missed you guys.
- 2:56SPEAKER_03: Um but it is like I just think it's one of those things where it's like, yeah, I've never I've just never been scary.
- 3:01SPEAKER_03: Anyway, yeah, all went well and look where we are now.
- 3:05SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: I I'll you before we get before we get to you, you I'm I'm gonna I'm gonna do like a brief monologue and then we're gonna obviously talk about you because that's what the most of the podcast is.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: It was it was difficult to know where to start because I just wrote down a load of stuff and it started with you won Olympic gold, and then yesterday decided to get nominated for the world's best player, uh, which we've always been incredibly um supportive of on Let's Stick Together.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: Um, he offset that with losing 7-1 in an open game to Amsterdam in the Hoof Classes.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: Middle women almost lost to China in the Olympic final.
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: Uh GB men decided to lose to 10-man India in the quarterfinal of the Olympics.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: Tongle Camp decided to both become a hero for his country by winning in the Olympics for them and to make sure that he made himself known as the world-class knobbo in the same moment.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: Um, Belgium crashed out of the Olympics to Spain.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: Um, what's that about?
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: Tom Craig got arrested for picking up some some some cocaine, some Charlie, some snow, some nose candy.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: And um I started with oh geez, my seventh club in two years.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: Um, so where do we start?
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: I I I don't know where to go with that.
- 4:23SPEAKER_03: There's so much.
- 4:24SPEAKER_03: Go in order.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: We'll go in order because I think that's quite fun.
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: You you you did what what we all dream of.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: You you climbed the mountain, you won Olympic gold.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: Um can you without talking for 15 to 20 minutes, let us like let us like jump in occasionally.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: But um how's that been?
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: How was it?
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: How was your experience?
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's um it's still people like I always thought that people were like um exaggerating in a bit when they say they come back from Olympics and that they want something or they play very well, and they're like, I really have to like sell down and whatever.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: It it's I can now honestly say it's true.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: It's it's still tough to like to realize everything that has happened.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: We had um it was a it was a bit of a weird tournament, I felt like with with what happened with you guys, uh the whole Tom Craig uh debacle, uh uh uh right before we played our game against Australia.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Uh, we we saw Belgium got out uh against um against Spain.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: So yeah, everything that that that happened like it felt like it it was uh it happened in like a week, if that makes sense.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: So everything went by so quickly.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: I like it still feels like it was two weeks ago when I was walking to like seven miles to the dining hall from our uh hotel or like our uh our place and going to Asia again, getting some uh some rice because uh the rest was shit, let's be honest.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Uh and uh yeah, and everything went by really quickly.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: I got sick even at uh I missed the first two games.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Uh played my 150th cap against um like was meant to be against GB.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Uh also a weird fucking game.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, so yeah, I don't really know where to start as well.
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: Um, I mean, I guess I guess an easy point is what you've already touched on, which is like before we get into like you winning and and the moment that is, is that we kind of did talk about it a lot in the fact that it was the most open uh men's side of an Olympic Games uh ever, probably.
- 6:35SPEAKER_02: And and it turned out that way.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: Um, like we said there was uh seven or eight teams that could probably go there and have success medal, and it definitely kind of like yeah, played out in that fashion.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: Um with Belgium smashing their group stage and then going out to Spain with Australia being you know winning the pro league and then falling out to you guys in the quarterfinals, with us being on the rise and then uh you know, you know, having a crazy game against India.
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: It it went like that, and I it probably made it a really good.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: I mean, it was terrible to be a part of in that quarterfinal, but like it's a good, I'm sure it was probably good for people to watch.
- 7:17SPEAKER_03: It was the it was the best quarterfinals from a neutral point of view that I think there's been in a long time.
- 7:21SPEAKER_03: I don't think there was I think each game offered its own individual scenario, which is what I think made this to I genuinely think this Olympics, both men's and women's, I think, was the most exciting it's been.
- 7:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, since I've been watching it.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, 100%.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: And I think um you kind of felt because Belgium, I spoke to uh spoke to Slow, uh Slovak quite uh um uh about the Olympics.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: And he also said like Belgium was kind of everyone's kind of a bit got scared again of Belgium because of like okay, they were they were really smashing everyone in the in the group stage, they were five, they beat Australia 5-2, and uh in hindsight, I think Australia just wasn't really on the tournament, uh, more than that Belgium was that good.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: Uh, but Slow also said like they never really got into it, and that's really weird when you win every group game, but they they I said it never really felt right, and it I kind of felt like we had in Tokyo.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: With us, it also never really felt right in the first couple games because we kind of screwed.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: We we yeah, we missed uh the first two games.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: You play against France and you're playing against South Africa, and it's just you have to get you have to get a win, it doesn't matter how you have to get a win.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: Then we we we we really stupidly lost two points against you guys.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: Uh um where Lee fucking Morton, he's like my uh uh nemesis right now.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Uh the fucker beat me 7-1 and scored two goals against us in Olympics.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: So I'm really I I even spoke to him.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: I he said that he's still I think he took it personal personal that I said that he's he's the one hockey player who looks shit, but is really good.
- 8:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he did take offense to that, but I was trying to talk him down from that.
- 8:58SPEAKER_02: No, but it was a compliment.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: He yeah, he said he said it to me after the game, like with a smile, and it was friendly.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: But I he said, Yeah, I said, Yeah, I'm sorry, Lee, but you do look like you can't play hockey, but you are really, really good.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: He beat me 7-1.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Uh, he probably me over a couple times, but still honestly believe he's the one player that looks really shit, but is really good.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: So just just listen at the you are really good, Lee.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, and then so then I don't know how, but you guys uh drew we drew that game with you guys, then we lost against Germany, and we were kind of like, okay, fuck not happening all over again.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: Got 2-0 down against Spain as well in the final group game.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: So I was like, Fucking hell, we're gonna end up fourth.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: Well, we're replaying Belgium in the quarterfinal, and then I don't know, something turned on.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: We switched on, and we never really uh took our foot off the off the gas, but I think our best game was versus Australia, where uh I think 2-0.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: Like we we for for once I think I felt like we were part of not for once, but like our team was like defensively by far the best team that was there, together with Germany, maybe, but like we didn't concede anything from the quarterfinals on.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: Like uh the one goal they scored was a was a missed corner.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: Uh uh, and it was Germany, was the only goal we conceded in the in the in the knockout stage.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Everyone was with their hands on the ground, diving for every ball, putting their life on the line.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: I think that's what made uh made the difference for us.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: And and it sometimes is like that.
- 10:31SPEAKER_02: I I think that sometimes it doesn't feel right, like, or maybe you don't feel like the tournament's going in flow, or like the Schluver said, like, but then the the team that's gonna be bit winning it is like you've touched on is like you find a way, um, it'll eventually click.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: Like it doesn't have to go right from the start, but like you find a way, and that's clearly what you boys put together.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: Like it's uh it's it seemed a bit like like maybe written not written for you because you you did everything, but like you you you basically m seem to mar both the Dutch flair and attacking hockey with the stuff that maybe has been lacking in the last few years, which is the crazy defensive side which you just touched on.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yep, yeah.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: I think that's uh that's uh uh uh what are you called?
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: Nails on or uh hammer on the nail.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: Hit the nail on the head.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: Hit the nail on the head, that's it.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: The hammer on the nail.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: Oh, you makes a joke in the or makes a mistake in on language.
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: We have to bring it down somehow.
- 11:39SPEAKER_02: And then and then we'll get on for the like winning gold, you like obviously.
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: Like, how is you know how crazy has that been?
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: Has it has it has it changed your life?
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: Are you still just doing the same shit?
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: You're just still playing golf every day, or like do you is it is it feeling different?
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: I I'm playing even more golf.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: Uh no, it's like I wouldn't say it changed, yeah, it does change your life.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm not gonna downgrade it because it's fucking sick, but it's more that I still don't really it's not that you wake up every day thinking, oh, I have Olympic gold.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Um it's more, yeah, every everyone else looks a bit different at you.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: Um for me, everyone kind of looked down on me because I was I'm such an idiot, but like now people actually think, oh, it's like not half bad.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: Uh but it's more like the the realization at a certain point that that like the one thing you've been working for your entire hockey career, um you you you you you won it.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: And for me, and I think it's the same for you.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: I think we were a bit in the same boat, like we were not like Belgium, um, who for who it was kind of yeah, not expected, but like uh for us it was a dream, but I never really uh it didn't seem like a real, like it seemed like a dream, if that makes sense.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: So when it finally happened, it was a bit surreal.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: I was like, okay, uh, and now you know what I mean?
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: And I it's it's a bit uh it still feels a bit weird, it still doesn't feel real all the time.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: It's not like my my medal is like in my in my cupboard next to my bed.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: It's like not that I wear it every day or whatever.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, it's just a bit it's all a bit surreal, and the the the weeks after like the days after we got gold.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: I haven't been uh I have the first time I was sober, I think the final was on Thursday.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: The first time I got like somewhat sober was uh on Monday, the Monday after.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: And then I started drinking again from Tuesday till till the next Sunday.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: It's like it's such a weird fucking experience.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: You also you don't get drunk, you just get fucked, but like you can go all night.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: It's like yeah, you're like riding the high, like yeah, yeah.
- 13:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, without going too deep on you as well.
- 13:49SPEAKER_02: Like we um, you know, people I I read the hockey NL article, which is a nice article about you last night, but like people are enjoying your story more because you have so many ups and downs.
- 14:02SPEAKER_02: You're not like uh just well, I mean, I'm just calling a spade a spade.
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: It you're not like a Yorick Crohn who's going to his fifth Olympics or whatever it is.
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: You you you've you've you've fought against um adversity, you've you've been uh you've been on a TV show and where is the mole when you're kicking the ball, you've you've had huge highs, you've won the Europeans three times, then you've got dropped uh in an Olympic quarterfinal, then you got dropped in a World Cup, and then you've basically shown again and again that you come back and you get better and stronger.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: And everyone's like uh I mean that's probably why everyone's looking at you differently.
- 14:39SPEAKER_02: Well, in my opinion, is it like uh you're also a very normal guy?
- 14:43SPEAKER_02: I don't I hate getting soft on this on this podcast.
- 14:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, first it was me, now it's you.
- 14:47SPEAKER_03: What's going on?
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's it's but it's uh it's it's a serious message because like it is inspiring and and it's cool to see someone who goes through so many of them, but then you like I said, you get to the top of the mountain.
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: Does it feel do you think it feels more special because you've gone through all that?
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, I I think yeah, I think so.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: I like I did I did it like a flashback when I got sick because I got I got uh got like a virus at the beginning of the tournament when I and as I just thought I missed the first two games of the tournament because I got ill.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: Well, not really ill, I just had a virus, so I couldn't play.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: And I thought to myself, oh fucking hell, not again.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: Not not that's some kind of weird shit that I have to explain after to everyone.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: No, I didn't play because I had some kind of shitty fucking uh age virus, and uh then I was like, okay, um when I when I when I played you guys and I felt because the most stress I had about everything was that if if I would come back because it was kind of clear that I would I would make a return in the tournament, uh most stress I had was like, am I going to be fit, if that makes sense, because I had to vomit uh quite a quite a lot um from the first from like the the night before the first game.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: Um I was like, fuck, am I going to lose all the training I've put in?
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: Is it like gone and I'm now not fit again because I've lost so much or whatever?
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: And after we played you guys in in 60 degrees, uh in a burning sun, which is which isn't like if you look at me, it's not my typical kind of weather, uh, but but then it's not quite good.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: I was like, okay, apparently this has to be a part of my story again.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: That some like something doesn't go to plan.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: Uh and yeah, when we won goal, I think that's the good thing.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: Everyone in our team has some some kind of story, like also because you talk about Joret, but also Joret had some adversity with in his career with injuries, and uh making being the youngest Olympian ever also creates uh insane expectations, and um, I think he had to overcome that as well.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: And I think he was one of our best players in the tournament, to be honest.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: So uh everyone has their own little story and their little chip on their shoulder.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: And with me, the chip might be just a little bit bigger than others, but like it just felt yeah, I don't know.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: Everyone was so um like it was such a team effort.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: Like, I felt when you look at Germany when they won the World Cup, it was like Weller's team, who like rose above everyone else, uh, should have been best player of the year or world player of the year, but was just head and shoulders above everyone else.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: And I think with us, no one really um uh uh rose above everyone else.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: I think we just had a really good team effort, and some players like think Wattle played played a really, really good tournament.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: I think I did, I I played it, played a pretty good tournament as well.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: Pian was really good, but like the rest, everyone just everyone was like a seven, and everyone just was really good.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: So it wasn't like a like someone carried the team, it was just 11 players on the field at all times that were like on.
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: Everyone's that's every coach's dream, I think.
- 17:50SPEAKER_02: That you have every player being a seven out of ten every game.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: And I and I I agree with you, and you've already you've already touched on it then, then so we might as well finish off the the you segment with the star awards.
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: Now, this I don't even know how to start this.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: Um the the yeah, world's best player.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: If you've yeah, if you've saw the news, the uh top five, they sometimes choose six players, sometimes they choose five.
- 18:17SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure how they work that one out, but they nominated the the the best five players, and um our very own Yuke Demol uh is is on the list.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: Now my first thought was like, Oh, I'm super happy for him.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: He's played, he's played really amazing in the last 12 months, and then I was like, shit, we're doing the podcast.
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: Shit, how do we what what do we do?
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: What do we do?
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: So go on, yeah.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: The the awards officially lost all dignity right now by having me be nominated.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: There's no value in it anymore because I've nominated.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: No, it's yeah, it's it's uh I said to uh because I uh of course uh hookee.nl like immediately called me because they were also surprised, probably.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: Uh, like uh what the fuck are you doing there?
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: Uh I yeah, I just I it feels a bit uncomfortable to be honest, to be completely fair.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: It feels like I'm a bit um uh uh yeah, not not uh in over my head, but it's it's just to be, I don't know.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: I I've never really uh seen it uh uh rational or like real or realistic for me to be in such a conversation, and I still honestly believe um yeah, if Germany would have won the final exact same final, but Germany would have won on shootouts, I would not have been nominated, and it would probably probably have been uh another German guy.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: I think I did really have a really, really good year.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, it just feels a bit uh like we we've had so many players who've had a really good year in our team.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: Um that it's like yeah, it feels weird to be like individually nominated for something when it's been such a team thing, and yeah, for me, uh yeah, it's it's an incredible honor to be nominated.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: But yeah, I've already sent a bouquet of flowers to Harman Prit for uh for his win.
- 20:10SPEAKER_03: So it goes back to like Phil's point though, doesn't it?
- 20:13SPEAKER_03: Of like 21 months ago you were sat at home whilst the boys were at the World Cup.
- 20:19SPEAKER_03: So then like now just probably so shows how much you've like gone about it the right way to like get to a point where you're like even to be nominated, I think it's like ridiculous considering where you were 21 months ago.
- 20:31SPEAKER_03: So again, like just from my point of view, as well as what Phil said earlier, like I think it's actually a pretty ridiculous journey, and like how many questions you must have had, and you went and got the answers you needed, and you kind of went about it in the right vein to get yourself to a point where you're one of the better performing players at an Olympics.
- 20:49SPEAKER_03: Like, I think that's kind of pretty ridiculous.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I've I've done I've done something right in the last couple months.
- 20:55SPEAKER_02: That's so problem is what we've we've been nice enough now, so I I'm gonna also speak candidly because that's because that's what we're here for.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: Is that like I still um don't understand the awards?
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: Um like I can I can say this while still being very happy for you, you but but I still don't understand them.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: Um I don't understand what the uh what the um like who who decides how they make their decisions because in in my opinion, what what the the the biggest irony of it all is that I thought Hardik was unbelievable um this year, and and the irony that he won it last year but didn't get nominated this year and he's been uh unreal this year.
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: Then you have like um does it does it make a difference that you have like uh Van Orbal, De Schluver and Van Doren who who in my opinion are three of the best players and have played really well this year?
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: Um Van Doren had an incredible like group stage of the Olympics, but because they don't make the quarterfinals, does that automatically?
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Eliminate them and then does that like where does Zach sit with that?
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: Because Zach got nominated but didn't make the semi-finals.
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: Do you guys have a take on that?
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: I'm pretty similar, I'm pretty similar to you.
- 22:13SPEAKER_03: Like, I still don't really understand the criteria.
- 22:15SPEAKER_03: I've tried to like find out more, but there's so many different sides to it.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: But I'm with you.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: Like, I I genuinely thought Hardik was unbelievable.
- 22:23SPEAKER_03: I thought he had an amazing Olympics.
- 22:25SPEAKER_03: I actually thought he like has performed all year.
- 22:27SPEAKER_03: The one year where you think he deserves it is the year he doesn't.
- 22:30SPEAKER_03: In the same way that I genuinely didn't think Perman deserved it last year, but I actually think Perman deserves it this year.
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: But it's like I've what I really struggle with is exactly what you're saying, Phil.
- 22:40SPEAKER_03: Like if you get knocked out of a quarterfinals, does that mean you're basically null and void?
- 22:44SPEAKER_03: Because ultimately on the biggest stage, that's when you need your best players in the world to perform.
- 22:49SPEAKER_02: So surely that does like ridiculous.
- 22:54SPEAKER_02: I missed the two other ones.
- 22:55SPEAKER_02: Is that first of all, Hannes Muller is probably the the the fifth best German.
- 23:02SPEAKER_02: Um like if you're sat there being Velen, you're like, sorry, what the fuck is going on?
- 23:08SPEAKER_02: Like I I I was still unbelievable at the Olympics.
- 23:12SPEAKER_02: I still carried my team.
- 23:14SPEAKER_02: And then yeah, like I mean, I think you also could have nominated, like I think you said in the article, like five or six Dutch guys.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: I think there was like Vortel had uh had an unbelievable tournament.
- 23:26SPEAKER_02: Um Jonas De Hoos was was also un un unbelievable.
- 23:31SPEAKER_03: So I so I have a question then.
- 23:32SPEAKER_03: If you, for example, let's say you have an unbelievable year next year, Phil, you get nominated, you win it, but then you you still have a great year, but it's not as good as the year you won it.
- 23:42SPEAKER_03: That probably means I think that means that you don't get nominated because everyone thinks your norm now is what you were.
- 23:48SPEAKER_03: That makes sense.
- 23:49SPEAKER_03: So in the case of Velen, because he didn't have as impactful a year as he did for the World Cup, that's why he's not been nominated, regardless of whether or not he's an unbelievable player, which is which I also think is why Van Doren doesn't get nominated, why Van Orbell doesn't get nominated, why DeSluver doesn't get nominated, why so many players don't get nominated, whereas like someone like Ahannes Muller has come from nowhere where no one really notices him to this year where people have actually noticed how consistent he's been, in the same way that Yuke has gone from being out of the team to being in the team present to being one of the better performing players in the team, which again is why I think someone like Vortol's probably not been nominated because he's also been so consistent over the past few years that almost goes a bit under the radar.
- 24:32SPEAKER_03: Like I wonder if that has something to play in it.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: I think it's also it's not the it's not the um how do I say it?
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm not uh I think that the five players who are nominated now are not the five best players, uh uh hockey players, if that makes sense.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: So we're not the top five of the uh look at me, we're no, it's not the top the top five players in the world right now.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm not I've don't get me.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: I I know for a fact that there's that there's like at least five better players, at least uh than than than I am.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: It's just more, I think, as you said, it's about the year maybe that we that that I think it's logical the two Dutch guys got nominated.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: I also said I think it could have been I think Cherry was always going to be nominated when we when we won gold, also because he's the captain and he's like a uh a vital part in our team.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, as you said, I think if if Water was nominated, no one would have said hey where's Jub de Mol.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: If uh Jonas was nominated, no one would have said where's Water Jub de Mol.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: I think that's a bit you can only choose two.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I have no clue why they chose me, but here we are.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, I would have really loved Vela to be uh to be in there, only only for the sheer fact that he's that he's that he's stopping with international hockey, uh, and in my opinion, in at the Olympics was still one of the best, maybe the best player uh uh there.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, and and the whole thing with the I think Hamapriet actually played a really good tournament as well, to be honest.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: I think Hardik was was insane, but it's tough to select two um uh to select two Indians.
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, considering everything, and also because they won bronze.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and for me, Wallace, I don't know.
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: I think they should they they they they probably had to make a choice between like a Wallace, a Van Doren, the Slove van Albul, uh you can name everyone.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: I think Van Albul has had a has has had a for his standards not a great year, but that means like because his standards are so ridiculously high, uh like he was injured quite a lot, didn't play a lot of pro league, didn't uh probably wasn't his in his best shape at the Olympics.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: Um, and yeah, there's like there's a different bar, a different uh expectation there is for Van Albon than there is for me, for example.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: There's a different expectation that there is for Van Dora than that there is for me.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: I think everyone, if Van Dora plays a solid game, uh uh no one really yeah feels special about it.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: Uh and I also think it's it's a bit of a um a popularity award.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: I think if I didn't, for example, if I didn't score the goal against Belgium with the run, uh you wouldn't be as much in the picture, and uh I probably wouldn't be nominated.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: So it's also as simple as that, I think.
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: And because Fandora does so much shit we don't see, or like the the the general people don't see, I think that's why a guy like him does get nominated.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: He already he's won two in a row.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: I feel people are a bit spoiled by this game.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: I think that's the that's the main thing.
- 27:27SPEAKER_02: And and I just to be honest with you, it just frustrates I get a bit frustrated when we're talking about this because like why does it have to only be five?
- 27:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, why why can't it?
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: But I mean, I'm just repeating myself, but why can't it be 20?
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: And then and then the the the right people decide who the five are.
- 27:43SPEAKER_03: Like yeah, but then we'd have to have Jarman Priet, Harmon Priet, Hardek, we'd have Sukji, and we'd have Shri Jesh, and there'd be your five players available if we went from 20 down to five.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: Well, that is true.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't be in and if people and I wouldn't be in the top five first, so now shut up.
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: You'd be in the top 20 though, and then you'd be uh very winning.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: I would I would not be in top five if if if we do it like you all right, all right, all right.
- 28:09SPEAKER_03: Starting next to be in the top starting next year in the top sixty.
- 28:12SPEAKER_03: You'd be in the top sixty, you wouldn't be in the top twenty.
- 28:14SPEAKER_03: I'm not voting him through.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: No, we'll we'll we'll we'll we'll start it next.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: FIHG listening, we'll start next year.
- 28:19SPEAKER_02: You wants this year, he's still in the top five, that's fine.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: But next year, maybe maybe rethink it because it's still it's it's still it's still just infuriating for anyone who watches hockey.
- 28:30SPEAKER_03: Just just on Phil's point, and you because you've been nominated, I need to ask the question how do we rig the votes so that you wins?
- 28:39SPEAKER_03: Like, how does it work?
- 28:40SPEAKER_03: Like we need to we need to really get down into the nitty-gritty so you can win it.
- 28:44SPEAKER_02: We have a platform here, not a big one.
- 28:46SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's not like we're gonna be able to outvote India, but we could give them a we could give them a solid second, right?
- 28:53SPEAKER_02: If you care at all about let's get together, if you care all, then fake yeah, then create many fake accounts, um and vote, vote, vote.
- 29:01SPEAKER_02: We want Yup Demol winning.
- 29:03SPEAKER_03: Just just out of interest, you if you win, if you win, can we make you a special t-shirt that you have to wear when you get your award?
- 29:12SPEAKER_03: Can we make like an LST?
- 29:13SPEAKER_03: So it's only it's nothing but pure brand exposure for us.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, sure, you can do that.
- 29:19SPEAKER_00: I want to we can do that.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: Unbelievable.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: I want to state two things for the record.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: Um, one is I've always been a huge fan of this award, and I I I I completely agree with the with the nomination process and shit.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: I feel like people are finally opening their eyes and seeing who the real best players are.
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: That's my first no second, nah, just leave it at that.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: That's good.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: Okay, cool.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 29:46SPEAKER_02: Let's finish the stuff.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, we could go into the Star Awards, but maybe we'll talk about it next week.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: Can you delete shit from Spotify?
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: Can we delete a couple episodes or is that not possible?
- 29:56SPEAKER_02: Uh we'll work on that as well.
- 29:57SPEAKER_02: If you've heard it here and you're listening for the first time, you loves the Star Awards.
- 30:01SPEAKER_02: We've always been incredibly positive about it.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: And please go on to FIH and web's uh website and vote for Yupe.
- 30:07SPEAKER_02: Uh and and and uh vote for Zach as well, because no and Jerry.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: We don't jerry.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: No, no, no.
- 30:14SPEAKER_02: Let's stick together.
- 30:15SPEAKER_02: We'll we'll vote for Zach and Yup.
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: Okay, cool.
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: I voted for Jerry.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: No, not kidding, I voted for Jerry.
- 30:21SPEAKER_02: Um okay, on on to well, actually, do you wanna we should we take a break there and we'll uh we'll come back because this has been the you segment, so we'll we'll come back after a break.
- 30:30SPEAKER_02: Sick of the shit right, we're back and even though we did a full you segment to start with, we're gonna just quickly because we spoke so nicely about him and he's so big time, we are gonna touch on the fact that um the Hoof class has restarted.
- 30:49SPEAKER_02: Um it's been a been a it was an exciting start to the weekend, but um there was high hopes for Arany Road, especially from from from me, David Ames, uh probably quite a lot of Arany Road, and they they decided to get spanked 7-1 by Amsterdam.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: It could have been the other way around.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: Like it was pretty close.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: Okay, I'll I'll start off um because I can I feel like I completely deserve this.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: Uh one is I think the score didn't really reflect like the the game.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: No, honestly, honestly, I still I honestly Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: Four, five, one, okay, seven, one is like a bit much.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: But Amsterdam a thousand percent deserved to win.
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: I think four, five, one was a bit more realistic or five, two or four three.
- 31:44SPEAKER_03: Hold on.
- 31:44SPEAKER_03: So when people normally say that, seven, one, they're normally like, oh yeah, two, one, or like two all when they say it's not a fair reflection.
- 31:52SPEAKER_03: Not we should have lost five, one, not seven.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: Well, it's the it's it's brutal honesty.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: I don't think we deserve to lose like like did this big.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: If I if I would have lost four one, I would have gone home.
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: I think, you know what?
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: I can live with this, but seven, one.
- 32:08SPEAKER_03: Just just out of interest, there's no highlights at the moment available.
- 32:11SPEAKER_03: Have OR paid off icons to stop doing it, or like what's going on, or is Toby Valter like painting?
- 32:17SPEAKER_03: Like, what's going on?
- 32:18SPEAKER_02: There are they are, they're on, they're on YouTube, bro.
- 32:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they're on YouTube.
- 32:22SPEAKER_03: Oh, they're on YouTube.
- 32:23SPEAKER_03: Oh, I was looking at icons the whole time.
- 32:25SPEAKER_03: I'll share them on my Instagram, don't worry.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: Uh I wouldn't, I wouldn't if I were you.
- 32:31SPEAKER_00: It was uh it we actually started again pretty well.
- 32:35SPEAKER_00: I don't it all went to shit real quick.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: I've never been ashamed on the hockey field, but I was at a certain point I was kind of ashamed.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: I was like, what the fuck are we doing here?
- 32:43SPEAKER_02: Um you know, this was this was we don't have to get too deep into it.
- 32:47SPEAKER_02: It's new look Amsterdam.
- 32:49SPEAKER_02: Uh OR had a bad day at the office.
- 32:51SPEAKER_03: I mean it's new look out, it's new look OR as well, isn't it?
- 32:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, new look OR.
- 32:55SPEAKER_02: They decided to get my defense.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: My defense, uh Max Kuipers is injured.
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: The slope is not playing.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: Uh we have a new coach, new team, new goalie.
- 33:05SPEAKER_00: Like everything's a bit new.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: So give us a fucking break.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: Don't think you're that good already because you just won against uh a handicapped OR.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: Don't think you're this we'll be fucking we'll we'll win this fucking league.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: Watch, watch us.
- 33:21SPEAKER_00: OR OR in a rebuild yeah.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: No, no, we're not in we're in fucking go now year.
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: We saved for the first week, we saved some players to like really go at Rotterdam and Pinocchio.
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: Watch after next next podcast, you're like, oh, whip off, you had a really good week, two wins in a row.
- 33:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's that's where we're going.
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: I can't wait for that.
- 33:43SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 33:43SPEAKER_02: Let's let's just think so, but we're gonna we're gonna loop back to to the Olympics.
- 33:49SPEAKER_02: Got a few more things to to talk about.
- 33:52SPEAKER_02: Firstly, like we'll we'll touch on the women's side because I mentioned it at the start.
- 33:56SPEAKER_02: Um the Netherlands women obviously won because we thought they were gonna win, but they almost lost to China in the final.
- 34:04SPEAKER_02: Now, I don't think anyone would have called that at the start.
- 34:06SPEAKER_02: Even you know, like we're even the most biased fans weren't gonna be like, oh, did Brendan call it?
- 34:12SPEAKER_02: Brendan's got his hand up, like he called it.
- 34:14SPEAKER_03: It's the one thing I actually did say was I think China will do something that no one expects this tournament.
- 34:19SPEAKER_03: Did you?
- 34:19SPEAKER_03: That's exactly what yeah.
- 34:20SPEAKER_03: I actually did.
- 34:21SPEAKER_03: I've actually got proof on my phone.
- 34:23SPEAKER_03: Well, I've said it for like I've said it for basically a few years or two.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: Very broad, we'll do something no one expects.
- 34:29SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, that that is Brendan.
- 34:32SPEAKER_03: Do you want me to actually go into it?
- 34:33SPEAKER_03: Basically, what I said was China are the only people during the pro league that have actually gone and tried to play some hockey, and so they've lost some big scores against like Holland and teams.
- 34:42SPEAKER_03: Like, so basically they've only been trying to learn during the pro league.
- 34:45SPEAKER_03: Whereas every other team that goes against Holland goes for like damage limitations, they never learn anything.
- 34:49SPEAKER_03: So then lo and behold, when it comes to a big game, China actually have a game plan that pretty much 80% are there, they just probably haven't got enough quality at the moment, but they've basically had a game plan based off what they've learned during the pro league.
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: So, like they're the only team that actually used the pro league for what it should be used for on the women's side.
- 35:07SPEAKER_03: On the men's side, I think it's a lot better, but on the women's side, a lot of teams just basically play against Holland and sit at a half court, lose five mil, don't learn anything, and we just start and we start again.
- 35:16SPEAKER_03: Whereas like China were the only team that actually tried to play the whole time.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: And I think Ellison Enden is a fucking weapon.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: If you could get that, and I think I think China is like the team for her, as in um I it's not but I feel like if you look at them, that they are very um um how do you say it?
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: Um aware of what they have to do, or they're very focused on on their job.
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: So everyone has like a specific job in that team and just is there to to fulfill that.
- 35:47SPEAKER_00: They take real pride in their in what they have to do.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: And I feel like she's like one of the best coaches in making sure like a structure is there and everything's in place.
- 35:56SPEAKER_00: I feel like like I was in the stadium when they um uh somewhat drunk already, so like don't take it too seriously, what I'm saying.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: Um probably already like shit face, but like I was watching it, mate.
- 36:08SPEAKER_00: I was fucking nervous because I know like I don't I don't feel people like the women, the Dutch women, well they do get the respect, but I don't feel like if you if you're such a favorite, if you're like the miles above like like buildings above the rest, like it is big fucking pressure because I felt like I don't want to say that they were they were uh relieved when they won, because I feel like if you win Olympic Gold, it doesn't matter like you're always just uh in ecstatic, but they were you saw like a like holy fuck, this is not happening to us on the field a bit, yeah.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: And it's like the pressure they must, and that's why it's so incredible what they're doing for the last eight years.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: The pressure these girls have is insane, yeah.
- 36:53SPEAKER_02: And actually, for the first time, you saw it.
- 36:55SPEAKER_02: First of all, it kept panning to Alice Nanan, and she knew you could tell she'd set them out, she knew exactly what she was doing, and but she also like knew it was a free go for her.
- 37:04SPEAKER_02: There was no expectation on her, it was basically like she's obviously set out her team, and it was just a go and see if you can do something special, and it clearly freed up the Chinese players, and they actually played really well.
- 37:14SPEAKER_02: But for the first time, you're looking around the Dutch team and you're like, they're feeling this, and they're normally so so far away, you know, they haven't felt them type of pressure moments for obviously probably a long time because they've been so much better, but yeah, it was it was fascinating, and and I was uh in in somewhat disbelief watching that game, being like, Is this actually happening?
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: Like, could this happen?
- 37:38SPEAKER_02: And then it turns out, well, no, it can't because the Dutch is still good at shootouts, it turns out, even though they must never practice them.
- 37:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and uh, but also back on uh Ever Sun, but I I um I saw it, but I didn't really notice it.
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: But then I I listened to uh Parlay Vu Hokai from um uh Orchard.
- 37:59SPEAKER_02: And by the way, that's a really good podcast.
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: So shout out to Diamond Orchards, he's he's he knows what he's doing.
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's really yeah.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: I really enjoyed it.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: I listened to like I think I listened to every episode because I really like uh I liked it.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: And what's his name, Cliffo?
- 38:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're good, they're uh they seem like a good time, but um they he also said that like Allison.
- 38:19SPEAKER_00: I don't know which uh um um which game it was.
- 38:25SPEAKER_00: Um but like he said that after China won, and I think it was against uh after the quarterfinal or after the semifinal, the camera went to Allison, and all the girls from China were like happy and almost crying.
- 38:37SPEAKER_00: And Allison just went in the holo and said, Stop fucking crying, stop fucking crying.
- 38:41SPEAKER_00: We belong here.
- 38:41SPEAKER_00: Don't don't think we don't belong, we belong here.
- 38:44SPEAKER_00: And like that's like you could run through a brick wall if someone does that, and I think that that's what she's doing.
- 38:50SPEAKER_00: So I yeah, yeah, yeah, it kind of intrigues me how well she's she's doing that.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: And I guess it would be fascinating to see someone like maybe more teams learn and see if they can challenge Holland because that is the problem with Dutch hockey's got such a big following, the women, and and and obviously they're incredibly popular, but like all neutral fans, normal fans just do want a bit of competition on that side now, don't they?
- 39:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I think it is it is slowly growing, and I think this uh this generation of Dutch players is like now uh like 28.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: I think most of them.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: I think San de Wat, uh uh Sonnen Kola, Pete Sanders, and like all the the top players are like getting a bit uh not old, but they're getting to an older age, and I think uh in uh in LA if some teams will keep developing, like Belgium has a pretty young team and are on the rise.
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: Uh now China showed.
- 39:44SPEAKER_00: I think Argentina needs to make uh needs to make a couple steps, but then at least it will get more competitive.
- 39:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 39:50SPEAKER_02: So moving on, um, we've got to probably talk about uh GB a little bit.
- 39:56SPEAKER_02: We've got to talk about uh some other Olympic stuff.
- 40:00SPEAKER_02: Like as I'm hoping that people watch the Olympics.
- 40:04SPEAKER_02: First of all, it was like uh it was it was I'm sure you can back me up.
- 40:09SPEAKER_02: It was it was and and and Brenn, because I know that you watched all of it and like how good Paris actually was to watch as a spectator sport, as like to be a part of.
- 40:19SPEAKER_02: I think they did a phenomenal job, bar the food.
- 40:21SPEAKER_02: Um and yeah, like like what what a what a couple of weeks.
- 40:27SPEAKER_02: I mean, we had a we had a strange one because I guess I related to what you said about De Sluva saying is that like never feeling like you're truly in the tournament.
- 40:38SPEAKER_02: We had a we had a really weird 4-0 win to start with, where Spain had a bunch of chances, but we were super clinical.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: We then went and drew a really feisty game against South Africa, two-all.
- 40:49SPEAKER_02: Um, then we had our game against UUP where it was it was a it was a two-all.
- 40:54SPEAKER_02: We we probably yeah, it was tough to say that we deserved a point there, but like scrapping it out, we felt like that was a real good result for us.
- 41:02SPEAKER_02: Um scrapping, like we managed to play against Arthur Tieffrey, who is who we've bitched about on this podcast, but had his best game of his life against us, and uh scrape a two-one win against France, and you start thinking, okay, this is like what's going on here, and then lose to Germany in the last group game to set up an India quarterfinal, which by the way, I think it was the exact same quarterfinals that it was in Tokyo.
- 41:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was that happened in Paris, which is super weird as well.
- 41:29SPEAKER_02: So almost exactly like like the exact same rankings or something like that.
- 41:33SPEAKER_02: Um and we went in still confident, still still still ready to beat India.
- 41:40SPEAKER_02: Now, for anyone who watched, uh there's no excuses going on here.
- 41:44SPEAKER_02: We we lost to 10 man India with where we played against them for 30, 40 minutes or something like that.
- 41:52SPEAKER_02: 43 you know that 43 minutes we play against 10 man India.
- 41:58SPEAKER_02: Uh personally, I've never seen a red card in uh in uh international hockey before of either of you.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: No, yeah, no, I don't think so.
- 42:08SPEAKER_00: No, that was also a uh a a yeah you guys said it in uh Commonwealth games, right?
- 42:13SPEAKER_00: The Canada guy.
- 42:14SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, good point, yeah.
- 42:16SPEAKER_02: Maybe it's just us rightfully so.
- 42:20SPEAKER_02: It was a red, I think it was a red card.
- 42:22SPEAKER_02: Like the the amazing thing about like going to big tournaments like the Olympics is like they have cameras absolutely everywhere, they can slow-mo everything, the drone was insane.
- 42:31SPEAKER_02: Um and Spider Cam.
- 42:34SPEAKER_02: Oh, Spider Cam, that's the one.
- 42:36SPEAKER_02: And it's it seemed at the at the moment of that going to 10 men seemed like it was like gonna be our day.
- 42:45SPEAKER_02: And then what what what I kind of forgot about and realised maybe later in the second half is like we've thrived for the last two and two and a half, three years on playing open, expansive, fast hockey, and what that did was slow the game down and forced India to to do something special, which is they defended for their lives, they did exactly what you said Holland did, they put their left hand down.
- 43:11SPEAKER_02: We still created uh numerous, like I think, uh good enough chances to win that game.
- 43:16SPEAKER_02: But um sport is sport is chaos, sport is cruel, sport is what it is.
- 43:23SPEAKER_02: And uh I I sat back from that experience and thought like okay, we weren't good enough.
- 43:30SPEAKER_02: But if one thing changes, then we probably sit and say we scraped a 2-1, we fought hard against it, uh, we we hit the post.
- 43:39SPEAKER_02: If that goes in, if Cal w one of the amazing shots that Sri Jess saved go doesn't go in, sorry, does go in, we probably sit there and say we did the right thing.
- 43:48SPEAKER_00: So I I feel I feel because the moment it happened, uh we were because we were watching the game.
- 43:55SPEAKER_00: Um and the moment it happened, we were with uh We were set with a couple guys and we said there's two teams in the world uh for who this is like the worst thing that could happen, and it's England and it's it was us.
- 44:10SPEAKER_00: Uh uh I think we would be a bit uh because we because we have like also some, but like your entire play is is like you said, is built on running on like you guys have guys who run at least 12 kilometers a game, it's like fit uh uh uh run and gun hockey, and now you had to play against like a quad, uh like a like a small zone the entire game, not be able to run.
- 44:34SPEAKER_00: All the quick guys were like uh the back line is there too soon.
- 44:37SPEAKER_00: Um, like I think, and that's not a that's not a dig on you guys, but I think if Germany or if Belgium would have come in that situation, they would have won 5-6-0.
- 44:48SPEAKER_00: We also would struggle because we were also a team that likes to run with the ball, like have open play, go, go, you know.
- 44:53SPEAKER_00: We all that's why we struggled against Germany in the final.
- 44:56SPEAKER_00: But we the moment it happened, I we were like, Oh, I don't know if this is that good for uh for for uh for GB.
- 45:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it it's it's not now to sound really wise because it's it's not, but like uh because you could have you guys could have easily won in 3-1, and no one would have said, Hey, that's that's that's not right.
- 45:11SPEAKER_00: But it's just it was a weird fucking game.
- 45:14SPEAKER_00: And what that's why the all the quarterfinals were were weird.
- 45:17SPEAKER_00: Spain, you felt you felt in the game Spain against Belgium as well, you felt okay, but there's something happening there, like Belgium is not themselves, they're they're losing balls.
- 45:25SPEAKER_00: The one thing they're good at, no, not the one thing, but something they're really good at is keeping the ball for like five minutes.
- 45:30SPEAKER_00: Everyone has to run behind the ball.
- 45:32SPEAKER_00: And like with them, it's I don't know, it was weird.
- 45:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 45:38SPEAKER_02: And you and then and then you reflect on these things where like you you think that sometimes stuff's like I mean, I reflected thinking like Shri Jess was was amazing.
- 45:49SPEAKER_02: Um and and and again, no excuses, but he he he played he played a game where they needed him most, and he made five or six five or six like amazing saves, like including uh the the shootout as well.
- 46:04SPEAKER_02: So um I I thought it was wrong to not talk about Brent.
- 46:07SPEAKER_02: Have you got any any way in here?
- 46:10SPEAKER_03: Not really, to be honest.
- 46:11SPEAKER_03: Like, I think you bit the nail on the head, like ultimately you guys created enough chances to win.
- 46:16SPEAKER_03: Um just didn't necessarily take them ultimately when when they needed the most rejects pulled out.
- 46:22SPEAKER_03: And I think what's like I really struggle with is when people comment on, so like obviously not being in the group, being outside the amount of people that were saying, like, oh, why didn't they take the goalkeeper off and this that and the other?
- 46:35SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, yeah, because it only cramps it even more, like it makes it even harder.
- 46:39SPEAKER_03: Like there's a lack of understanding of like grow up.
- 46:43SPEAKER_03: Um the lack of like understanding for me is like ultimately GB did enough to win that game.
- 46:50SPEAKER_03: That that's the crux of it.
- 46:52SPEAKER_03: But you didn't win it, so it's like, okay, well, actually, did you create enough chances?
- 46:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, right, okay.
- 46:57SPEAKER_03: Well, you just didn't take them then.
- 46:58SPEAKER_03: And that's like that is what an elite sport is at that level, and as you say, like it's cruel, but that's also the reason we play it because we've also been on the opposite end of.
- 47:05SPEAKER_03: I remember we played against Germany away and we had one chance and we scored one goal and we won one nil, and they must have had about 15-16 chances and they just couldn't pull the back of the net.
- 47:14SPEAKER_03: It's like it is just the way sport works sometimes, yeah.
- 47:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, 100%.
- 47:18SPEAKER_00: It's a bit the same like we had on Saturday versus Amsterdam.
- 47:20SPEAKER_00: It just it just didn't want to fall.
- 47:23SPEAKER_03: Like we were so close, yeah, it just didn't go away.
- 47:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, sometimes it helps.
- 47:28SPEAKER_03: I think what was really hard for me watching was the fact that like your dick, it it it didn't, it didn't necessarily feel like GB played as well as they have done previously, but again, the game dictates it because they're playing so compact and they're so deep, it doesn't play to our strength, so then you've got to have that something a little bit different, and I don't necessarily know if we had that this tournament, yeah.
- 47:50SPEAKER_03: Um, and that's and that's the and it again, it's the beauty of the tournament and how it works out is the fact that when you're playing against India, the last thing you expect to play against when India are playing against you is a 40-yard press with a man down because they just don't do that, then that's not how they play.
- 48:05SPEAKER_02: And there's a there's a couple of like finishing points.
- 48:08SPEAKER_02: There's first of all, like I've had to say this a lot on the podcast, but like when you're playing in them big moments, you you like have a lot of like people who then reflect, and people who've never watched hockey before and people who get passionate about it, which is incredible, but then you get the opposite side of that of people being like you know, the the hate that you get afterwards, and the the like I kind of like was was kind of happy because it means that people care, people wanted you to do well, but they it didn't go well, and then you have to take the the flack.
- 48:40SPEAKER_02: Um, I got my got my first bit of uh Instagram hate, which was really funny, which I which I really enjoyed.
- 48:47SPEAKER_02: It was like it was it was something like you're a bottler, mate.
- 48:50SPEAKER_02: Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
- 48:51SPEAKER_02: So I was so I was like, but what what my point what my point was was that like I didn't I didn't send that.
- 48:58SPEAKER_02: Oh it must have been edited you burning.
- 49:04SPEAKER_02: My point with it was was that like everyone's gonna start saying now, including like the team or the staff or the fans or the supporters or the board or whatever it is, it's like you you failed, and but that doesn't mean you have to like chuck the baby out with the bathwater.
- 49:18SPEAKER_02: It doesn't mean that we've done everything we've done for the last you don't know what that means, you're the baby out of the bathwater with the bathwater.
- 49:28SPEAKER_03: Basically, you don't have to chuck everything away just because it didn't necessarily go the way you hoped it would.
- 49:33SPEAKER_03: And that said, chuck the baby into the body.
- 49:36SPEAKER_02: So it's like if you've got if you've got an idea, right, and you've got a philosophy, just because it didn't go well, it doesn't mean you have to get rid of the whole thing.
- 49:43SPEAKER_00: What does a baby have to do with it?
- 49:45SPEAKER_02: You you're throwing the baby well because you just you get rid of the bath water, you don't get rid of the baby.
- 49:49SPEAKER_03: The baby is I was gonna say you don't you don't you don't put the baby down the drain and keep the bath water, do you?
- 49:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but you once it again, you chuck the baby out with the bath water.
- 49:58SPEAKER_01: Don't chuck the baby out with the bathwater.
- 50:00SPEAKER_01: Oh you don't.
- 50:01SPEAKER_01: Oh, you don't chuck it.
- 50:03SPEAKER_01: I was like, why the fuck would you throw the baby out with the water?
- 50:08SPEAKER_02: My my main point was, yeah, it was like do we don't have to get rid of what we've done, all of the good work we've done in the last two or three years, because we can just build on that.
- 50:16SPEAKER_02: It doesn't mean that just because it went wrong, you know, in in India against India, it it was wrong.
- 50:22SPEAKER_02: Um, so yeah, I was gonna end the conversation there, but I shouldn't have used such a strange analogy to a Dutchman.
- 50:29SPEAKER_03: It was it's a little bit different, but I liked it.
- 50:32SPEAKER_02: Um like lastly, we'll get we'll we'll last thing of the Olympics is like we'll talk about the the Tom Craig thing.
- 50:39SPEAKER_02: He's he's now been banned by Hockey Australia for 12 months.
- 50:43SPEAKER_02: If anyone doesn't know, he got caught at the end of the tournament um buying some cocaine.
- 50:49SPEAKER_03: Have you not seen the have you not seen the nuance of it?
- 50:52SPEAKER_03: They basically said he's banned from any Australian competitions.
- 50:55SPEAKER_03: So Hockey India League is fine, and playing in Europe is fine.
- 50:58SPEAKER_03: You just can't play in Oz for 12 months.
- 51:02SPEAKER_03: So that's pretty decent.
- 51:03SPEAKER_03: Here, mate, have a sabbatical for 12 months where you can just go and do what you want.
- 51:06SPEAKER_00: Don't worry about it.
- 51:07SPEAKER_00: I want to I want to pitch in on this because I think uh I I feel like that's that's he he only did something like for Australia wrong, as in why would the guy be banned from for from hockey for the rest of his uh his career?
- 51:18SPEAKER_00: Like I know it's yeah, he never took it like well unofficially.
- 51:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, okay, but okay, now okay, but having said, like it's it was really, really stupid of him, and he he knows that everyone knows that.
- 51:28SPEAKER_00: And uh let's be honest, he was not doing it all by himself, probably.
- 51:32SPEAKER_00: So uh yeah, let's be real.
- 51:36SPEAKER_00: But that was that was that was gonna be my question.
- 51:39SPEAKER_00: The guy was just incredibly unlucky, uh, yeah, incredibly incredibly stupid, and I think that's that's that's about it.
- 51:45SPEAKER_00: I think he he probably uh regrets everything that that has happened, but uh yeah.
- 51:50SPEAKER_00: Are we are we gonna be like here sitting like the guy lost the quarterfinal thing?
- 51:54SPEAKER_00: He had he wanted to have a good night.
- 51:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but all the shits.
- 51:59SPEAKER_00: What are we talking about?
- 52:00SPEAKER_00: I think it I think it was really stupid, but I also think it got got got like, yeah, how do you say it?
- 52:07SPEAKER_00: It it's like the hockey world, everyone wants to blow it up even more.
- 52:11SPEAKER_00: It's wrong place, wrong time, isn't it?
- 52:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, no, you're you're right.
- 52:14SPEAKER_02: I'm not we're not sat here being like like like we're not like criminalizing him, we're not saying he's a terrible bloke.
- 52:21SPEAKER_02: He he made a mistake.
- 52:22SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm we're reporting it and saying like you know, I'm sure he's he's still young, he's gonna come back and play some more hockey.
- 52:29SPEAKER_02: And I'm he's in Germany right now.
- 52:31SPEAKER_02: And speaking of India League, it means I actually didn't even realize this, but you is now.
- 52:36SPEAKER_02: I mean, we should do a let's stick together thing uh team now, Brendan, because you're guaranteed big money now, isn't he?
- 52:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh he's not gonna split it with me.
- 52:45SPEAKER_00: I didn't sign up, I did not sign up for India League.
- 52:48SPEAKER_00: What?
- 52:49SPEAKER_01: No, I didn't sign up.
- 52:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's got a rebuild year with OR.
- 52:54SPEAKER_03: He's got a rebuild year with OR, mate.
- 52:55SPEAKER_03: That's not a lot of behind the scenes for January.
- 52:58SPEAKER_00: No, hear me out.
- 53:00SPEAKER_00: This was my thought process, and I want people uh I do I regret not signing up?
- 53:05SPEAKER_00: Maybe a bit after yesterday.
- 53:07SPEAKER_00: But I thought, okay, sign up for a hill.
- 53:11SPEAKER_00: Am I going six weeks?
- 53:12SPEAKER_00: And it's it's not the 50% of the whole thing is in uh rural Kela.
- 53:17SPEAKER_00: I thought six weeks.
- 53:18SPEAKER_00: I have to go for six weeks to India.
- 53:20SPEAKER_00: Do they know the difference between Justin Block and Yub Dumont?
- 53:23SPEAKER_00: Probably don't.
- 53:24SPEAKER_00: They'll probably buy me for like whatever.
- 53:26SPEAKER_00: If they buy me, it's like, oh, he has Olympic gold, so we'll buy him.
- 53:29SPEAKER_00: It's a defender, he doesn't really score.
- 53:31SPEAKER_00: It's like okay, 15,000 euros after taxes, it's seven and a half thousand euros.
- 53:35SPEAKER_00: Am I going for seven and a half thousand euros for five for six weeks to India to Rukela to sit there?
- 53:41SPEAKER_00: I was like, no, not gonna do that.
- 53:42SPEAKER_00: I want to go like a trip to Australia and uh and and uh and New Zealand coming up with the Dutch team.
- 53:48SPEAKER_00: I was like, I'd way rather go for three weeks to Australia and New Zealand and I go to India now Gareth Bale.
- 53:55SPEAKER_02: Gareth, we know who the real Gareth Bale is now, don't we?
- 53:58SPEAKER_02: That OR contract's looking pretty nice, isn't it?
- 54:00SPEAKER_00: Oh mate, that's that's that's this comment from the guy who's had his seventh club in two years.
- 54:06SPEAKER_00: Like, first you I don't know what's what's the name of your old team again?
- 54:12SPEAKER_01: Which one?
- 54:13SPEAKER_00: The last the last what's it called?
- 54:17SPEAKER_00: Holcomb.
- 54:18SPEAKER_00: Holcomb, yeah.
- 54:19SPEAKER_00: Holcomb completely bankrupt now.
- 54:21SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 54:21SPEAKER_00: I feel we can't pay you anymore.
- 54:23SPEAKER_00: Oh fuck, you are go to OGs.
- 54:24SPEAKER_02: They're not they've they've made they are not, they are not they're bankrolled if anything.
- 54:30SPEAKER_00: Most overpaid player.
- 54:31SPEAKER_00: I spoke to I I was on a on a video call with David Ames for for for an hour yesterday.
- 54:37SPEAKER_00: We we came to the conclusion that you are the most overpaid player in the history of OGs.
- 54:43SPEAKER_02: He is an absolute you two at colours, nibble, nibble.
- 54:52SPEAKER_02: You got I mean, fair play to you.
- 54:54SPEAKER_02: I gave you some shit.
- 54:55SPEAKER_02: You came right back at me.
- 54:57SPEAKER_00: Of course, David Ames didn't say that.
- 54:59SPEAKER_00: Of course, he didn't.
- 55:00SPEAKER_00: I did.
- 55:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, 100% did.
- 55:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, aims Ames Ames 100 would have said that.
- 55:05SPEAKER_01: Um stokes the fire.
- 55:06SPEAKER_02: No, but that's that's why I thought I just thought what about the chance to spend six weeks with your good friend Phil?
- 55:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but mate, there's eight teams, eight weeks with my friend Phil.
- 55:18SPEAKER_01: You're probably in a whole other team.
- 55:20SPEAKER_02: I put my notes down, I put it on the notes at the my application.
- 55:23SPEAKER_02: I said I must play with you Demore.
- 55:26SPEAKER_00: You didn't, you did, and also you did that because you thought that fucking lanky man is not being being bought, and now all of a sudden people think, Oh, you can actually play hockey, and I get like this really weird nomination.
- 55:39SPEAKER_00: And now I thought, oh, maybe I should have just sent in my name.
- 55:42SPEAKER_00: I might, I might still send in my name.
- 55:44SPEAKER_00: Hey guys, yeah, just do it.
- 55:45SPEAKER_03: Sure, surely they'll do it.
- 55:46SPEAKER_03: It's their star awards, they'll be keen for you to be there.
- 55:49SPEAKER_01: Hey guys, this is about sign up here.
- 55:52SPEAKER_02: I am and here's a video clip of me scoring a goal against Belgium in uh in Utrecht.
- 55:58SPEAKER_03: Or if there's if there's a live auction, you just turn up to the auction, just see if you can just get get picked up just there.
- 56:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like the like uh subfuckers.
- 56:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, with like a with like a LeBron James style suit that's like three times too big for you, that'd be class.
- 56:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no.
- 56:14SPEAKER_00: I I still stand for what I said, but it just hurts it a bit more now.
- 56:19SPEAKER_00: That's yeah, but yeah, just watch this.
- 56:23SPEAKER_00: Maybe I'll still sign up, even though it's closed.
- 56:26SPEAKER_03: To be honest, you put three weeks in New Zealand slash Australia or six weeks in India is a bit of a no-brainer.
- 56:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 56:34SPEAKER_03: You want rotties on tap, son.
- 56:35SPEAKER_03: You want rotties on tap.
- 56:37SPEAKER_03: Is it called roties?
- 56:38SPEAKER_03: Are they roties?
- 56:40SPEAKER_03: Rotties.
- 56:41SPEAKER_03: Oh, depends where you're from.
- 56:42SPEAKER_03: You've changed, mate.
- 56:43SPEAKER_03: You've not got a northern accent anymore.
- 56:45SPEAKER_02: No, fair enough.
- 56:47SPEAKER_03: Rotties, darling, roties.
- 56:49SPEAKER_02: I'm a roti.
- 56:51SPEAKER_02: Rotti.
- 56:52SPEAKER_03: Get us rotti.
- 56:53SPEAKER_03: Rotti.
- 56:54SPEAKER_03: Yes, rotti, mate.
- 56:55SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 56:57SPEAKER_02: That is, I mean, you I I know that do you still have a coupe or is it like a like a like a golden house coupe?
- 57:06SPEAKER_03: Save it for next week.
- 57:06SPEAKER_03: He's too much too big time these days.
- 57:08SPEAKER_00: He hasn't got enough time.
