Latest / Xenomania / Undertone: Is the Haunting Even Real? - Xenomania 92
Transcript
- 0:00Jon: This week on Xenomania, a podcast receives a series of mysterious
- 0:05audio files from an unknown sender.
- 0:08The files start as a man is trying to prove to his significant other that
- 0:13she does indeed talk in her sleep.
- 0:16As the hosts, a man who believes and a skeptical woman, play the files,
- 0:21they grow increasingly ominous as the woman suffers from nightmares
- 0:25and sleepwalking, culminating in a brief, horrific recording.
- 0:30Meanwhile, Evie, the skeptic, is caring for her dying mother and seems to be
- 0:35suffering from a haunted presence herself.
- 0:38Will Evie come around to the reality before it's too late, or will
- 0:43her skepticism be her downfall?
- 0:46This is Undertone.
- 0:49This is Xenomania
- 1:07Ryan: I was really scared in this film.
- 1:09I jumped a couple times.
- 1:10Kearns: Yeah, I jumped a bit too.
- 1:13It was a freaky movie.
- 1:14Of course, we're talking about Undertone and everybody, as you just saw.
- 1:17but before we jump into the movie, John's got a thing about
- 1:19this month coming up to talk
- 1:21Jon: Oh, yeah
- 1:23Kearns: this upcoming month, John?
- 1:25Jon: Oh, we're- by the time you hear this, we will be practically to October,
- 1:29and one of my favorite things in the world is the October Movie Challenge.
- 1:34I create one just about every year.
- 1:36It's in process as we speak.
- 1:39Well, not as we speak, but, you know, ongoing.
- 1:43I have 27 of the 31 days planned out.
- 1:46when it's done, we're gonna post it on our socials and invite you guys to play along.
- 1:52it'll probably serve to help launch a Patreon, 'cause I'll
- 1:55pop on and do some reviews of some of the movies that I watch.
- 1:59And listen, I definitely invite you guys to play along.
- 2:02There's a scoring system.
- 2:04There's some fun categories.
- 2:06You'll find some movies you've never seen before doing it this way
- 2:09Kearns: Cool.
- 2:10Ryan: That is cool
- 2:11Kearns: And John does it every year.
- 2:14Jon: Pretty much.
- 2:15I mean,
- 2:16Kearns: a big month
- 2:17Jon: I take it a little beyond just this challenge too.
- 2:20I, try to get in as many horror movies as I possibly can.
- 2:26Kearns: That is
- 2:26Jon: I got to 83
- 2:29last year, I think
- 2:32Ryan: In a
- 2:32Kearns: That's a lot.
- 2:34Jon: In a month, yeah.
- 2:35Yeah.
- 2:36Yeah.
- 2:37Kearns: a lot
- 2:37Ryan: I think I did like, we, Jada and I did like 15 'cause
- 2:41we try to do like the 31, and
- 2:43Jon: Mm-hmm
- 2:44Ryan: made it to 15.
- 2:45This year we're gonna, we're gonna try, so.
- 2:48Jon: It's hard to do the 31.
- 2:52Kearns: One for each week of the podcast probably.
- 2:55Ryan: Well, that counts.
- 2:56So you just got like how many?
- 2:5826?
- 2:59Jon: Yeah.
- 2:59You just have 27 more to go.
- 3:01Kearns: retirement.
- 3:02Retirement and being an old man and having zero responsibilities
- 3:06and doing whatever I want.
- 3:07I'll probably just sit in a chair outside and not do any of this cool
- 3:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:12Kearns: I'll be able to do stuff like this.
- 3:15But all
- 3:15Jon: Yeah
- 3:16Kearns: challenge.
- 3:17Cool.
- 3:19So Undertone's that is, first of all, I'm just gonna flame out the,
- 3:24or throw out the first flame on it.
- 3:27It's, Iron Lung a house.
- 3:31It's Iron Lung in a house
- 3:32Ryan: that's so far.
- 3:34That's so far, 'cause Iron Lung is literally just in a tin can and this you
- 3:38have movement, you have, like, suspense.
- 3:41Kearns: They go, they go from one room to another room,
- 3:45Ryan: But that's all you
- 3:45Kearns: to another room
- 3:47Ryan: That's all you need in
- 3:48Jon: I,
- 3:49Ryan: it scary, and that's what they do so well with even the audio and the lighting.
- 3:53It, it's so done.
- 3:55It's
- 3:56Jon: I think,
- 3:57Ryan: There we go
- 3:58Jon: I think there are as many rooms in this movie as there are
- 4:01on-screen acting performances.
- 4:05I think it's
- 4:05Kearns: Three
- 4:06Jon: rooms and three actors.
- 4:08Kearns: or,
- 4:08Jon: Yeah, 'cause you, 'cause you really just have Evie, her mom, and
- 4:12the visiting nurse, and everybody else is just a, a vocal performance
- 4:18Kearns: Which is very Iron Lung.
- 4:20Ryan: the
- 4:20Kearns: That's my point
- 4:21Ryan: could be just like, just a voiceover too, you
- 4:26Kearns: It's true
- 4:27Jon: Yeah, you don't see her, but there is a, there is a physical being there
- 4:31Kearns: the, ASMR aspect of it and what they do with the audio is, the
- 4:35key part of the movie that makes it shine and/or become annoying
- 4:38depending on what audio you're listening to in the movie at the time.
- 4:42Can be kinda
- 4:43Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 4:45Kearns: they- that's
- 4:46Jon: Eek.
- 4:46Kearns: aspect
- 4:47Jon: Yes.
- 4:48Yes.
- 4:49And I, feel like this is a good time to bring something up real quick
- 4:52before we dive too deep into Undertone.
- 4:55What are some of you guys' favorite podcasts?
- 4:58Kearns: like historically all time, probably the one that I've
- 5:00Jon: Yeah.
- 5:01Kearns: the most would be Last Podcast on the Left.
- 5:03I just en- that was such good comfort food.
- 5:06I,
- 5:06Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 5:06Kearns: got into that one with the Satanic government episodes, like
- 5:10That, I mean, for that podcast, it was pretty early, and those
- 5:13Jon: Yeah.
- 5:14Kearns: up.
- 5:15Jon: Yeah
- 5:15Kearns: up, it's, there's some real stuff there.
- 5:18That's like, that's got to do with the, traffic issues and… See, I gotta be
- 5:23careful with my words here, YouTube, and the, you know, the Tiny Tots and
- 5:28Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 5:28Kearns: and a guy named Larry King and all that.
- 5:30But I, I listened to like probably 200 episodes of Last Podcast.
- 5:34Now I just listen to like Huberman Lab and, adult wellness crap and stuff.
- 5:40As I'm getting older, I'm getting more and more boring.
- 5:43But yeah
- 5:45Jon: Yeah.
- 5:46Ryan: bad.
- 5:46It's not
- 5:48Jon: Yeah.
- 5:49I sa- I saw a live Last Podcast on the Left.
- 5:52They, they were pretty good live.
- 5:54Kearns: Henry Zebrowski's hilarious, dude.
- 5:56Jon: Yeah
- 5:57Kearns: He just, he has it.
- 5:58Whatever it is, he's got it.
- 6:00you ever see his show that was on Cartoon Network for a long time?
- 6:03Jon: No.
- 6:04Kearns: the
- 6:05Jon: I think it's on Netflix now.
- 6:06Kearns: Oh, even better
- 6:09Ryan: were there like office assistants or something?
- 6:12Kearns: They're demons.
- 6:14That's all I know.
- 6:15Jon: I, yeah, I'm blanking on the name.
- 6:17I know what it is, it's just not
- 6:19Ryan: Swim.
- 6:20Kearns: Yeah
- 6:22Ryan: I know what you're talking about.
- 6:24That was him?
- 6:25Kearns: was Henry Zebrowski, yeah.
- 6:27Ryan: Wow
- 6:28Kearns: Yes, sir. He's a comedian first.
- 6:30He was a stand-up
- 6:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 6:32Yep.
- 6:33Ryan: thought he was just a podcaster.
- 6:35Kearns: sir.
- 6:35Ryan: really good."
- 6:36Kearns: Well, he
- 6:37Jon: Yeah
- 6:37Kearns: the show.
- 6:38It was Marcus and Henry at first, and then they brought in… Not Henry.
- 6:42Marcus and whoever the other one is.
- 6:44Jon: It was Ben Kissel.
- 6:45It's somebody else now.
- 6:47Yeah, they brought somebody, uh,
- 6:49Kearns: Yeah
- 6:50Jon: I'm blanking on who it is 'cause I'm a lapsed last podcast listener.
- 6:56Ryan, where are you?
- 7:00Ryan: I stick with wrestling, to be honest.
- 7:02So I really listen to Talk Is Jericho.
- 7:05I do like Chris Jericho's interviews,
- 7:08Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:09Ryan: when he joined AEW.
- 7:10And it's just like you get behind the wrestler's personality, what their
- 7:15gimmick is, and how they're trying to bring back pro wrestling compared to
- 7:20entertainment, which is what W- WWE is.
- 7:23Um, I also listen to Busted Open Radio, which is a- all wrestling.
- 7:28It just got bought out by WWE, so they've been picky on
- 7:32what they're talking about, so
- 7:34Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:35Ryan: to that less.
- 7:36And then when I used to, uh, carpool with my buddy Rob Trauma, shout out to
- 7:41Rob, it was always fantasy football.
- 7:45Kearns: Oh, yeah
- 7:46Ryan: he like, on like two speed from 45 minutes to work, he would
- 7:52listen to the entire podcast.
- 7:55And I'm like, "You understand everything that's coming out?" And
- 7:57he's like, "Yeah, these are good picks.
- 7:59Don't worry." And I don't know how he did it, but that's,
- 8:04Jon: Yeah.
- 8:05Ryan: about what I listen to.
- 8:06I'm not like a big podcaster guy, but like I've listened to
- 8:09a little Last House on the Left.
- 8:11I like them.
- 8:12Um, I've
- 8:14Jon: This podcast.
- 8:14Mm-hmm
- 8:16Ryan: you know.
- 8:17Yeah, the podcast.
- 8:18Like I… Couple of those.
- 8:22Like I
- 8:22Kearns: I used to listen to Rogan a bit.
- 8:23I used to listen to the pod, uh, the Fight Companions and stuff.
- 8:27The COVID era of Rogan, the Joe Rogan Experience kinda dropped me out of it.
- 8:33I did Two Bears One Cave and Your Mom's House, Tom Segura, but he's
- 8:37also fall- When, since he got rich, he's like, kinda sucks.
- 8:41So I think he and his wife are getting a divorce too
- 8:43Ryan: Oh yeah,
- 8:44Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 8:44Ryan: uh, finalized
- 8:46Kearns: they an- I remember they announced it on the podcast, and
- 8:48I saw, like, a YouTube clip of it, and I was just, I did not care.
- 8:53Like, why does that affect me in any way?
- 8:56Jon: Maybe that reinvigorates the podcast.
- 9:00Something.
- 9:00Oh, geez.
- 9:02Mm-hmm.
- 9:04Kearns: which is funny too.
- 9:06So he'll do it sometimes, she'll do it sometimes.
- 9:09I think
- 9:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:11Ryan: That is interesting
- 9:12Kearns: Well, it's an IP, so they have to retain or divide ownership in a divorce
- 9:18'cause they both own half of it, so it's kind of like tricky, but may those
- 9:23Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:23Kearns: never find me.
- 9:25Ryan: Yep.
- 9:25Kearns: Yep
- 9:26Jon: No, sir. Yeah
- 9:28Kearns: Yeah, no thank you.
- 9:29Ryan: I
- 9:30Kearns: But yeah, that's,
- 9:30Ryan: my DVD collection.
- 9:32Kearns: that's the podcasts that we all listen to
- 9:35Jon: Oh, I, I have a couple others out there, out there.
- 9:38I have two by the same two guys.
- 9:40Crime in Sports and, Small Town Murder.
- 9:43Kearns: Okay
- 9:44Ryan: Hold
- 9:44Jon: Crime in Sports is all j- it's all just athletes who are criminals.
- 9:49Like, it's, like, biographies of athletes who got in legal trouble.
- 9:53It's so much fun.
- 9:55Ryan: Did
- 9:55Jon: You get to make fun of these guys.
- 9:58Ryan: Like,
- 9:58Jon: they-
- 10:00Ryan: like, I mean, like they didn't cover like OJ first.
- 10:03They like built up to it, or have they
- 10:04Jon: No, no.
- 10:05And I mean, they did OJ, yeah, but it's way more fun most of the
- 10:11time when it's somebody you don't know of, or at least somebody you
- 10:15don't know had legal problems.
- 10:17But like some, the wrestling ones are always outrageous
- 10:21Kearns: Yeah, I bet
- 10:22Jon: but any sport where there's, a risk of brain damage, you
- 10:25wind up with some wild stories
- 10:29Ryan: Probably a lot of football.
- 10:31Jon: Yeah.
- 10:32Ryan: Yeah
- 10:32Jon: There's no shortage of that.
- 10:34But like I said, like sometimes the ones that like you've never heard of, they
- 10:38did a, dart player, like an English darts player, and it was just off the wall.
- 10:46This guy was getting arrested.
- 10:48Like you don't have to train so you can just get bombed and
- 10:50get in trouble all the time.
- 10:52Kearns: Yeah, it's like bowling.
- 10:53K-
- 10:54Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:55Kearns: is pre-
- 10:55Jon: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:57Yeah.
- 10:58And then
- 10:58Kearns: stuff
- 10:59Jon: the oth- the other one I listen to a lot is very, very
- 11:02much like, um, last podcast.
- 11:04It's called Necronomipod
- 11:07Kearns: I know of that one too, yeah.
- 11:08Jon: They do a lot,
- 11:09Kearns: uh, from you I know it
- 11:12Jon: they do a lot of similar things to, to Last Podcast.
- 11:15They're, none of them were professional comedians.
- 11:18just, you know, a guy who likes to tell stories to his two friends
- 11:22while they hang out and drink
- 11:25Kearns: Yeah, that sounds fine.
- 11:27Sounds like my kind of Saturday night for sure.
- 11:30Jon: Yeah.
- 11:30Yeah, yeah.
- 11:34Kearns: are, are a thing that's, that's hit and that they have not gone away.
- 11:37A lot of people thought they would.
- 11:38No, it's replaced certain mainstream media.
- 11:40People get their news on podcasts now.
- 11:42People do everything through that.
- 11:45Jon: Yeah.
- 11:45Kearns: you can be
- 11:45Jon: Yep
- 11:46Kearns: and get lots of money on podcasts
- 11:50Ryan: Simpler.
- 11:51the information straight to you.
- 11:53You don't have to go through anything crazy
- 11:56Kearns: Cozy corner style too, where it's like they're in the room with you.
- 11:59Yeah, I'm lonely.
- 12:00I wanna hear some people talking.
- 12:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 12:02Yep.
- 12:04Yep.
- 12:04Kearns: Indeed.
- 12:06let's get back to the movie now.
- 12:07Enough of this
- 12:08Jon: Yeah, so, so I'll, I'll segue us right back.
- 12:11Ryan: sappy
- 12:12Kearns: So Ryan was
- 12:13Jon: Mm-hmm
- 12:17Kearns: So Ryan, do you believe in the paranormal?
- 12:20Ryan: I, yes, I do.
- 12:21I have encountered the paranormal a couple times, and I, I do believe.
- 12:26Kearns: You do believe, huh?
- 12:27Ryan: Mulder.
- 12:28I believe in the aliens, I believe in ghosts, the paranormal.
- 12:31I mean,
- 12:33certain things happen in this world.
- 12:35Sometimes you can explain it, sometimes you can't.
- 12:38And it's like this movie, right?
- 12:41is unbelieving.
- 12:44She's questioning the world.
- 12:46Her co-host is
- 12:48Kearns: she?
- 12:49Ryan: Oh, Evie?
- 12:50Sorry.
- 12:52I was getting onto the tangent.
- 12:53And then Justin's the realist at that point.
- 12:57Evie being the skeptic and Justin being the believer, I feel like
- 13:03there are scenarios in this world where there have been demonic
- 13:07encounters and, like, they mentioned it with the history books and stuff.
- 13:12I believe that has existed in the past, exorcisms and all that.
- 13:17It's just we don't hear a lot about it
- 13:19Jon: Well, I, I'll say this.
- 13:23Kearns: Exorcisms is a good place to go for the whole
- 13:24belief in the paranormal thing
- 13:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:26Mm-hmm
- 13:30Kearns: like the church.
- 13:32So if there's stuff like that going on, you know, okay, there
- 13:38might be something to this.
- 13:39Could it have been, uh, to their benefit in some way?
- 13:41Sure.
- 13:41To make up demonic possession for means of control and stuff like that?
- 13:45Sure.
- 13:46But they didn't really that.
- 13:49They tried to keep it under wraps and stuff.
- 13:51So yeah.
- 13:52personally, I've never encountered the paranormal.
- 13:54I've encountered spooky weirdies, I've… but I've never seen a ghost or, you know,
- 14:02something happen where I was like, "Oh yeah, that's definitely a, something
- 14:06from another world," kind of thing.
- 14:08We were in the woods doing through-hiking once.
- 14:11We're all going to sleep.
- 14:12It was like hikers' midnight, so like 10:30 maybe.
- 14:15And, uh, just s- horrible screeching, awful noise ran through, and it was
- 14:24most likely a screech owl or something like that up in the, uh, Adirondacks.
- 14:29that would be the closest thing to my body being like, "That's a demon
- 14:32coming for my soul," I've ev- We all got out of our tents with hatchets,
- 14:36and knives, and stuff thinking we're gonna fight, like, the Wendigo.
- 14:40was, it was an a tr- it was trippy.
- 14:43And it was cool too, but it was, it was trippy.
- 14:45Ryan: Do you, do you believe in the paranormal?
- 14:50Jon: I want to.
- 14:53Ryan: Have
- 14:53Kearns: Makes for more fun
- 14:55Jon: Nope.
- 14:56Ryan: All right.
- 14:57There's an insane asylum, Upstate
- 15:00Jon: know what you're talking about.
- 15:02I've driven through there.
- 15:03Nothing.
- 15:04Ryan: have you,
- 15:05Jon: Nothing
- 15:05Ryan: have you walked the grounds?
- 15:07Jon: No, no.
- 15:08But I've g- I've go- I've gone into allegedly haunted houses.
- 15:12I've done all that stuff and nothing.
- 15:15I wanna believe in it.
- 15:16I, I think the world's a lot more interesting if that kind of stuff is real.
- 15:20I don't know that it is.
- 15:21I, I think it's…
- 15:23I, I'm way closer to Evie than you guys are in this.
- 15:27Like, I'm
- 15:28Kearns: Um, well, um, I'm with you more so.
- 15:30The, the other thing, Ryan, was There's a restaurant in
- 15:34St. Thomas the Virgin Islands.
- 15:36Have you ever heard of, um… Well, there, there- So basically when the,
- 15:40whoever took it over, the British or whomever, the Dutch, whatever,
- 15:43they brought their wife down, the governor, and she hated it there.
- 15:48And apparently, like, she threw herself off some, like a cliff into the sea
- 15:51there, and she haunts the restaurant.
- 15:53And one of my family members was in the bathroom and came out of the
- 15:57stall, and there was, like, hand soap dispensed all over her purse
- 16:01that she put on the counter, and nobody had come in the bathroom.
- 16:04Easily explainable in 10,000 different ways, but that one gave me chills
- 16:08probably 'cause I was young at the time,
- 16:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:14Ryan: what was the, the
- 16:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:20Ryan: called, it came on the History Network.
- 16:23Yep, Smalley's Inn.
- 16:25Jon: Mm-hmm
- 16:25Ryan: has had some incidents, like
- 16:27Jon: Yeah.
- 16:28Ryan: the steps and stuff
- 16:30Jon: I went there.
- 16:30You know what was creepy about that place?
- 16:32Kearns: The food?
- 16:33Jon: The o- the owner, who just stood in the corner and stink-eyed you all night.
- 16:38Like, that's the creepiest thing about that place.
- 16:40They tried, they tried real hard to make it creepy.
- 16:44The only thing creepy was that dude
- 16:47Ryan: heard stories.
- 16:48Man, that, that's disappointing then.
- 16:50All right, I still got the insane asylum
- 16:54Listen, it was like a movie.
- 16:56The clouds rolled in, the doors were shaking all at once, lightning flashing.
- 17:02Kearns: Oh boy, like live?
- 17:03Oh, I feel it coming back again a roller.
- 17:10And then you turn around and it's the whole band
- 17:13Jon: Yep.
- 17:14Ryan: I don't know.
- 17:14Jon: Yeah.
- 17:15Ryan: we went to an abandoned
- 17:16Jon: Ed Kowalczyk is standing and staring at you
- 17:22Ryan: Some, some was staring.
- 17:24I don't know.
- 17:24Kearns: Dolphins cry.
- 17:30So Brian, Brian's a belieber
- 17:33Ryan: Oh,
- 17:34Jon: Yeah.
- 17:35Ryan: get my peaches down in Georgia.
- 17:37Yeah, yeah, yeah
- 17:38Kearns: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:40All right, so what we're gonna do for the rest of this episode is we're gonna,
- 17:43we're gonna speak like this, okay?
- 17:46Because
- 17:46Jon: Please
- 17:47Kearns: apparently teaches you that you have to speak like
- 17:51that in a pod- It's super quiet.
- 17:54It's,
- 17:55Ryan: ASMR-ing it
- 17:56Kearns: it's super
- 17:57Jon: a… Yeah, it's a very, very quiet movie.
- 18:02There's not even much score until, like, the last 15, 20 minutes.
- 18:06There's, you know, there's the screaming on some of the audio
- 18:10files, but it's really quiet
- 18:13Ryan: But that's what creates the perfect atmosphere.
- 18:16'Cause, like, I feel the last time I felt like this was when we watched
- 18:21Evil Dead Rise, 'cause I said I was, I got scared at this f- of that film.
- 18:25With this, I felt like it was a different scare, 'cause I
- 18:29was waiting for jump scares.
- 18:30I was waiting for the expectation of, like, the loud noises,
- 18:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 18:35Ryan: that's what that quiet does.
- 18:36And it really does it in a subtle way where you do or you're like, you jump
- 18:41and you feel the chill, but you can continue watching it and enjoy it, and
- 18:46be like, "Okay, I'm ready for the next thing." And I think it does well because
- 18:50it's different in the sense where all horror films are mostly visual, and now
- 18:55you're using the auditory for it, I think that's a smart way to go, especially
- 18:59for this film, and they, they nail it
- 19:04Kearns: But that's the-- it's all they got is the auditory for most of the movie.
- 19:09True.
- 19:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:10Kearns: So it's like that's what they have to rely on, so they have to do it well.
- 19:13And the very quiet is the gimmick with me was like, all right, so when
- 19:16it gets not very quiet, they're gonna scare the piss out of you, and that's
- 19:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:20Kearns: what they do, which
- 19:21Jon: Yeah.
- 19:22Kearns: It's disquieting 'cause you're sitting there and you're like, "I know
- 19:25it's coming. I know it's coming." I should have put on the, the noise-canceling
- 19:29headphones for my PS5 while watching it.
- 19:32That would have made it even better.
- 19:33Ryan: Ooh,
- 19:34Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:34Ryan: good
- 19:35Jon: Yeah, I th-
- 19:35Kearns: that for The
- 19:36Jon: probably a really good
- 19:37Kearns: Rose, bro.
- 19:38W- way back in the day, I was using, like, the, infrared wireless headphones
- 19:44way back in the day for Exorcism of Emily Rose, sitting on my bed, and
- 19:47the computer was, like, 10 feet away.
- 19:49And when she screams in the barn, my entire head almost exploded.
- 19:55I was like, "Oh, God."
- 19:58Ryan: You take a chance when you're watching, like, a really good horror film
- 20:01with those intense scenes, and it goes
- 20:03Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 20:04Ryan: games too, especially when you've got the headset on, 'cause
- 20:07you're so intertwined with it.
- 20:10Like, it puts you into it, I feel, more
- 20:12Kearns: does
- 20:13Ryan: to it on a soundbar.
- 20:15Like, I gotta sh- I shut things off sometimes, like,
- 20:19'cause it gets a little intense
- 20:21Kearns: It's scary.
- 20:22Ryan: I mean, I make the atmosphere.
- 20:24I shut off all the lights.
- 20:25The TV's just blasting like it's Dolby 500.
- 20:28Kearns: Mm-hmm
- 20:29Ryan: dark.
- 20:29I don't know what the hell's going on in there, you know?
- 20:34Kearns: No, I'm with you on that.
- 20:35Um, you gotta do that part.
- 20:38But
- 20:38Jon: Yeah.
- 20:39Kearns: would you be able to listen to that podcast?
- 20:41Would you find it boring as hell
- 20:44Ryan: I like them.
- 20:45I feel though they're characters.
- 20:48So I was thinking about us while watching it, and I feel like what
- 20:52works for us is we are ourselves.
- 20:55Kearns: Yeah
- 20:56Ryan: us.
- 20:56Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:57Ryan: we are.
- 20:57While with them, I just kept hearing, "Get back into character. Get back into
- 21:01character." And yes, viewers, this is us.
- 21:04We're not characters.
- 21:06We
- 21:07Jon: I,
- 21:07Ryan: characters, but we're not
- 21:08Jon: I'm, I mean, I think there's a little character in us when we're doing this.
- 21:13Like, I, this,
- 21:14Ryan: it…
- 21:14Jon: there are definitely elements of me that I play up some on here,
- 21:18and I think that's what they do.
- 21:19Like, I think Evie's probably very naturally skeptical, and Justin probably
- 21:25winds up somewhere more in the middle, but it works better for them if he's,
- 21:30like, the true Fox Mulder believer
- 21:34Kearns: Yeah.
- 21:35The cat just scared the piss out of me, by the way.
- 21:37She jumped up on the table and knocked something over.
- 21:39Did you see my head break
- 21:40Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 21:42Kearns: Scared the piss out of me.
- 21:45Oh, that was funny.
- 21:47Um, the Fox Mulder.
- 21:49Yeah, that's a good point.
- 21:50I want to believe
- 21:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 21:53Ryan: Fi- it was very Fox Mulder.
- 21:54Like, I got that vibe, and it wasn't, like, a bad, like,
- 21:58interpretation, but I agree with that
- 22:03Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 22:04Jon: that's what would make something like that interesting.
- 22:07If you put, if you listen to a podcast like that and we're both just like, "Oh
- 22:11my God, this is real. Holy cow. Holy cow." Like, I, I mean, you need, you
- 22:16need a pushback on some things sometimes.
- 22:19I think that's when we're at our best, when there's someone
- 22:21pushing back on an opinion
- 22:24Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 22:26Ryan: I agree with that.
- 22:28Agree with that
- 22:31Kearns: Our next bullet point just says, "Spouse is
- 22:33sleeping." So I'm gonna call that
- 22:37Jon: The,
- 22:37Kearns: Uh, what do you
- 22:38Jon: the,
- 22:38Kearns: one?
- 22:39Jon: this a, this is a very,
- 22:41Kearns: sleeping
- 22:41Jon: specifically me thing because th- those audio files could
- 22:47have been recorded in my house.
- 22:49Kearns: Mm-hmm
- 22:50Jon: is a notorious, notorious sleep talker
- 22:57Like she has whole conversations some nights and
- 23:00Ryan: thought you were gonna say snoring
- 23:03Jon: Uh, that too, but like the, what, the one that gets me is I, I would say
- 23:09maybe three or four times a year, in the middle of the night, there's a scream.
- 23:16It doesn't sound like it's coming from her, like it's not a
- 23:19scream sound that she would make.
- 23:22She just screams
- 23:24Ryan: Okay
- 23:26Jon: It doesn't, it's not her scream.
- 23:28I'm not… And then it happens and I wake up and that's the end of sleeping for me.
- 23:32And I've always said I'm gonna record this one night so you can
- 23:36hear it, 'cause she doesn't believe that it happens, but it does
- 23:42Kearns: Did you ever get her?
- 23:43Do you ever get
- 23:44Jon: No.
- 23:45No, it's almost im- because it happened, like I'm asleep when it happens.
- 23:49I'd have to sit up pretty much every night and record it
- 23:54Ryan: You gotta do what, uh, Mike did.
- 23:57Get that old school tape recorder
- 23:59Kearns: That sounds
- 24:00Jon: I,
- 24:01Ryan: What?
- 24:02Jon: I, I, I, I'm not, I'm not interested in recording the whole night because I
- 24:06don't wanna know what I do in my sleep
- 24:11Kearns: Yeah.
- 24:12Well, that's like, um, the reason why paranormal activity was so
- 24:15effective because freaky to think of
- 24:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 24:20Kearns: vulnerable state
- 24:21Ryan: You, you really thought the first one was freaky?
- 24:24Kearns: The first one was freaky.
- 24:25Ryan: I did, I thought the s- real quick, the second one was a little bit scarier.
- 24:29I enjoyed the second one more than the first one, actually
- 24:32Kearns: And then they went Rosemary's Baby 'cause they ran
- 24:34out of ideas with the third one
- 24:36Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 24:36Ryan: I got a good joke out of that theater.
- 24:39go down there
- 24:41Kearns: Yeah.
- 24:42That
- 24:42Ryan: Thank G-,
- 24:43Kearns: it, it hit hard?
- 24:44Ryan: Thank God they laughed.
- 24:45I d-, it was tense.
- 24:48Kearns: I bet
- 24:49Ryan: Are you, are you looking for the demon?
- 24:51Kearns: No, I'm staring at the cat.
- 24:53Cat's being weird.
- 24:55It's not… And I'm not worried about the paranormal, I'm worried
- 24:57about her para-pissing on my couch
- 25:00Ryan: The, well, speak about cats.
- 25:02Real quick, for our podcasters out there, um, I actually want
- 25:07to mention this to you guys.
- 25:08Did you guys see the new, um, species that's out?
- 25:12Kearns: Yeah, the, something came over my newsreel, but I did not read it yet
- 25:19Ryan: a s- it's smaller than a cat, full-grown size, and
- 25:22it looks like a leopard.
- 25:25Jon: Boy
- 25:26Kearns: new as in they made it, or new as in
- 25:28Ryan: It just popped up.
- 25:30They just, it just came out of nowhere
- 25:33Kearns: Pretty gnarly stuff.
- 25:35What is she doing?
- 25:36Ryan: breed, but I know you guys are cat lovers and
- 25:40Kearns: We are
- 25:40Ryan: be cat lovers who are listening.
- 25:42I thought it was cool information.
- 25:44Kind of cut the tension in this whole scary demon talk right now.
- 25:49But with them sleeping, right, I, I understand.
- 25:52I had the same conversation with Jada 'cause she snores, and we go
- 25:57back and forth of both of us snoring.
- 26:00I'll just wake her up.
- 26:01I'm very like, "Hey," you know.
- 26:03But she has recorded me snoring after I denied, and it's,
- 26:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:08Ryan: it's bad.
- 26:10it's bad.
- 26:11Jon: I don't snore.
- 26:13It surprises everybody.
- 26:14I don't snore
- 26:16Kearns: I don't snore either.
- 26:17I, um, I do talk every once in a while.
- 26:19I think the last thing I said when we were on vacation in Maine, 'cause we
- 26:22were all sleeping in the same room, was like, "I'm, I'm gonna burn them out."
- 26:25Kim was like, "You said something weird in your sleep." I was like, "Well,
- 26:28Jon: That,
- 26:29Kearns: of weird things when I sleep too, so…"
- 26:31Jon: that, that's gotta be real comforting for your family.
- 26:35Kearns: Gonna
- 26:36Jon: Burn 'em out
- 26:37Kearns: I'm gonna burn him out.
- 26:38So it's true, she did accuse me of saying that, and I believe her.
- 26:41Um, I have some- I've been having some trippy dreams lately anyway.
- 26:45I've been waking up being like, "Oh, that's like a layer cake of weird going on
- 26:49there." But, this movie I think nails the tension aspect with the nursery rhymes.
- 26:54Let's talk
- 26:54Jon: Yeah.
- 26:55Kearns: quick.
- 26:56Ryan: Is that true?
- 26:57Jon: What?
- 26:58The origin of Baa Baa Black Sheep?
- 27:00Ryan: well, I mean, like, J- so we got into the conversation today about
- 27:05this too today, Jada and I, on the idea of like the nursery rhymes,
- 27:10like having this bad history, right?
- 27:13with unaliving and all that.
- 27:15like
- 27:16Kearns: Well,
- 27:16Ryan: it's an
- 27:17Kearns: around the rosy
- 27:18Ryan: Well, yeah,
- 27:19Jon: Yeah.
- 27:20Re…
- 27:21Ryan: But like if you hear it in reverse, do you believe that's true?
- 27:25Jon: No.
- 27:26Ryan: Okay.
- 27:26Jon: think, I mean, 'cause there's not, like, a standard recording.
- 27:31I mean, is there, are there recordings where there's something backwards?
- 27:34Sure.
- 27:35Probably
- 27:35I think there may be recordings of nursery rhymes that have contained something
- 27:40backwards, but i, I mean, as a whole it's not real because there's not a single
- 27:45standard recording of a nursery rhyme.
- 27:48There's just sort of, you know, people have, uh, recorded them all
- 27:52throughout the history of recording.
- 27:54But I did f- I fo- I found some interesting ones, and I, we can start
- 27:58with Baa Baa Black Sheep since it's one that's featured in Undertonen.
- 28:04Um, so it's based on a wool tax imposed by Edward I, um, as a way to… Yeah,
- 28:13it's a, he did it as a way to pay off the massive bills racked up by the Crusades
- 28:19Kearns: Yeah, that sounds about right.
- 28:21Ryan: Yeah.
- 28:21Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:22Kearns: lead to a lot of revolutions and stuff, by
- 28:24Jon: yeah.
- 28:25Ryan: Yes, it
- 28:25Jon: Mm-hmm
- 28:26Kearns: we don't like taxes.
- 28:28Jon: Yep.
- 28:29No.
- 28:30Ring Around the Rosie is a controversial one because, like, it's become,
- 28:35like, part of accepted history that, it's based on the plague,
- 28:39the bubonic plague and, and that.
- 28:42There's some questions about that because they can't find
- 28:45evidence of it, like, that early.
- 28:49So it could've been based on it afterwards, but they can't find
- 28:54evidence that that particular rhyme existed during the plague.
- 29:00Kearns: Right
- 29:02Jon: but, like, Mary I, AKA Bloody Mary, is responsible for two of them.
- 29:08one, Mary, Mary Quite Contrary, is her garden is England.
- 29:13the contrary refers to the persecution of Protestants.
- 29:17Uh, silver bells and cockle shells are torture devices.
- 29:22Kearns: Ooh, I
- 29:23Jon: Uh-huh.
- 29:24Kearns: it
- 29:25Jon: Three Blind Mice is also supposedly based on her, back to, again, persecuting
- 29:32Protestants, this time three Protestant bitch- bishops who, uh, were…
- 29:39Yeah, that wa- that was a, that was an interesting slip.
- 29:42There's probably something behind that.
- 29:43Um, who were tortured and executed at her demand.
- 29:50but yeah, nursery rhymes are pretty messed up.
- 29:52Uh, Georgie Porgie, King George IV.
- 29:55Um, the pudding pie is a reference to his weight.
- 29:59Uh, he allegedly had a 50-inch waist.
- 30:03Kearns: That's a big boy.
- 30:04Ryan: huge
- 30:05Jon: big, big boy.
- 30:06Kearns: that's a big boy
- 30:07Jon: and making the girls cry re- actually refers to his sexual appetites.
- 30:13He was apparently quite prolific
- 30:18Kearns: For such a big dude too.
- 30:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 30:21I mean,
- 30:22Kearns: it's gotta be the king, I guess
- 30:23Jon: yeah, it's good to be the king, baby
- 30:26Kearns: All right.
- 30:28See, and nursery rhymes being creepy, the, the first one I ever heard that
- 30:31creeped me out was the one from f- from, um, Nightmare on Elm Street.
- 30:34Ryan: Yep.
- 30:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 30:35Kearns: a nursery rhyme, right?
- 30:37Ryan: Yeah
- 30:37Jon: Yeah.
- 30:38Kearns: Freddy's Yeah.
- 30:40Jon: Yep.
- 30:42Yeah, that's a good one
- 30:42Kearns: stuff.
- 30:43Ryan: I mean, you
- 30:44Kearns: Creepy stuff
- 30:45Ryan: nursery rhymes and you don't think anything bad when you're a kid,
- 30:48but then as you grow older and you hear it, it's like, "Wow, this is
- 30:51some, some dark stuff right here."
- 30:53Kearns: Yep.
- 30:55Jon: Yeah.
- 30:55Ryan: You know?
- 30:56Kearns: The, whole, like, idea of singing that to one of my kids as
- 30:59they're going to sleep is a huge no-go.
- 31:03no-go.
- 31:05Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 31:05Kearns: let's pivot to the witching hour here.
- 31:07That's a big part of this movie.
- 31:09And we did bring up Emily Rose earlier.
- 31:10Exorcism of Emily Rose leans on the witching hour quite a bit with regard
- 31:15to being visited by the paranormal entities that are them, quote-unquote.
- 31:22So the witching hour is big there.
- 31:24What is the witching hour, everybody?
- 31:27Ryan: 3:00 in the morning when all the creepy ghouls come out, witches,
- 31:31skinwalkers, uh, demons, anything you can imagine, they come out to cause havoc.
- 31:38And I feel like in every paranormal film, the 3:00 is the biggest
- 31:44thing because that's what we know.
- 31:46And it goes back to centuries, I feel like the 1800s, um, with the
- 31:51Salem witch trials and all that
- 31:53Kearns: Is it universally accepted that it's 3:00 AM?
- 31:58Ryan: That is a
- 31:58Jon: I don't, I don't think it is.
- 32:00Ryan: be more of an American
- 32:02Jon: yeah, I had always thought it was midnight to 1:00
- 32:08Ryan: Really?
- 32:10Jon: That, that's what I grew up thinking.
- 32:12Kearns: I wonder if that's because of The Exorcism of Emily
- 32:14Rose though, 'cause that's what
- 32:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 32:17Kearns: never thought about it prior to that, so it might have
- 32:21Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 32:21Kearns: mind
- 32:22Ryan: I always thought it was 3:00 AM
- 32:24Kearns: Is there any chops to it?
- 32:25I mean, I wake up, if I wake up and it's 3:00 AM, like on the nose,
- 32:29I freak out a little bit inside
- 32:32Ryan: I, I do that a lot actually, funny enough
- 32:36Jon: Wake up at exactly
- 32:37Kearns: That
- 32:38Jon: 3:00 AM.
- 32:43Kearns: Yeah, I'm sure
- 32:44Jon: Um, but, but does it follow time zones?
- 32:52Is the witching hour time zone specific?
- 32:54Kearns: following… 'Cause I- you're poking holes in it, but it would
- 32:58really m- it wouldn't matter because the, it's the, where the, you know,
- 33:02where we are in our, or where you are in the revolution, you know?
- 33:07So it's
- 33:08Jon: So it's Earth-based, not time-based.
- 33:11Kearns: Yeah,
- 33:12Jon: It's,
- 33:13Kearns: it would have to be because time as a, a concept can't be
- 33:16quantified that way due to relativity.
- 33:19So time is not something that's constant,
- 33:23Jon: Okay
- 33:24Kearns: we all know, right, listeners?
- 33:26If the higher the gravity, the slower the time.
- 33:28So time is something that can be manipulated, so it can't be that.
- 33:32it would have to be Earth-based for sure
- 33:37Jon: Okay, fair enough.
- 33:38Fair enough
- 33:39Ryan: with you
- 33:41Kearns: But the witching hour.
- 33:42How does it factor into the film, though?
- 33:46Ryan: Each time she does the podcast and you listen to each of
- 33:49the audio, you see that the time is automatically at 3:00 o'clock.
- 33:54But how they do it with the camera angles with the spinning, right?
- 33:57And you see her and it spins, and you go into the hallway.
- 34:00And I like those little camera tricks they do where they're up close to her, but
- 34:05they have, like, the background through.
- 34:08And as a viewer, I don't know if you felt the same way, and especially
- 34:13during these times, is I was expecting something to pop out, and it doesn't.
- 34:18And it's like it's a tease,
- 34:21Kearns: they hold that tension.
- 34:23hold that tension for a while
- 34:25Ryan: Like you see the lights flicker, you see the camera go
- 34:27through, and then you see the clock.
- 34:29And the clock
- 34:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 34:30Mm-hmm.
- 34:31Ryan: 'cause I feel like as the movie continues, it looks
- 34:33like it's melting, I feel.
- 34:35Especially during, like, later on when, like, there's the red colors
- 34:39and it's like the dark colors.
- 34:41It
- 34:41Kearns: Yeah
- 34:42Ryan: it's melting in the wall, and it's pretty cool, and it's
- 34:44set at that time at all times.
- 34:47the idea of them losing time while in this podcast is an interesting
- 34:52concept I feel like by the time it hits 3:00, it's off, and it's like she's
- 34:59back to being who she is technically.
- 35:02It's interesting
- 35:04Kearns: It is interesting.
- 35:05I don't know what you mean by any of that, it's off.
- 35:07She is who she's is, like, this time.
- 35:10Ryan: like she
- 35:11Kearns: that a little better?
- 35:12Ryan: like she snaps back in.
- 35:13Like she's like zoning out 'cause she's not talking to
- 35:16Justin at 3:00 in the morning.
- 35:18She's sitting there with her headphones and then she
- 35:20Jon: No, they are.
- 35:21Kearns: right?
- 35:22Jon: They are.
- 35:22No, they, yeah, because, uh, i- like, they tell you, they, the very last recording
- 35:29that they, they make is a live recording.
- 35:31They get the call-ins, and they, they go live at 2:30 AM
- 35:37Ryan: Oh, okay.
- 35:38Jon: Yeah.
- 35:39Ryan: just like, like… So in my head, I thought, 'cause it would jump
- 35:42to 3:00, that the time was jumping and whatever they were inviting in
- 35:47Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 35:47Ryan: it, and I was like, "Oh, this is a pretty cool concept," but okay.
- 35:50Jon: Mm-hmm
- 35:51Ryan: Scratch my concept out then.
- 35:53Never
- 35:53Kearns: Okay
- 35:55Ryan: But now that makes sense because… All right, it's interesting,
- 35:59like, I, I wouldn't be able to do a podcast at 2:30 in the morning
- 36:03Jon: Oh, I would.
- 36:04I'm, I can be wide awake at 2:30 in the morning
- 36:07You guys wanna play a game?
- 36:08Kearns: Let's do it with the game
- 36:11Jon: I, I have our classic,
- 36:12Kearns: more than
- 36:13Jon: our classic stasher slash, stash three slash five.
- 36:19Kearns: Okay.
- 36:19Jon: it's themed.
- 36:21I don't think guessing the theme n- will necessarily help you though.
- 36:26it might,
- 36:27Kearns: Okay
- 36:28Jon: not.
- 36:29They, it's a very distinct theme, but I don't think it helps.
- 36:32movie number one is Omega Man Charlton Heston in the I Am Legend story
- 36:41Kearns: I don't think I can stash it 'cause I haven't seen it.
- 36:43Ryan: You've never seen The Omega Man?
- 36:45Like,
- 36:45Kearns: No
- 36:45Ryan: uh, uh, well, uh, that, that shocks me 'cause I think you would love it.
- 36:50But, like, when you get onto the whole I Am Legend story and you, you
- 36:54start with Vincent Price as the last man on earth, which is the black and
- 36:57white, and he's, like, visiting, and you don't really see the monsters.
- 37:01It's like the aesthetic.
- 37:02The Omega Man comes out, and they make it like the 1970s.
- 37:06Like, you get that '70s vibe.
- 37:08And this is right after Planet of the Apes, so he's a hot commodity.
- 37:11And this is after Ben-Hur, right?
- 37:13Kearns: Yeah.
- 37:14Jon: Yeah.
- 37:14Kearns: Would have to
- 37:15Jon: Yeah
- 37:16Ryan: So, like, he's a hot commodity, and it's like they change the story,
- 37:19but instead of making him… I'm not gonna say it 'cause you know the
- 37:22story, and if you haven't seen it, I like the twist what they do with the,
- 37:26um, ghouls I'll call in this movie.
- 37:30Kearns: The ghouls.
- 37:31Ryan: a whole t-
- 37:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:35Ryan: But it's, it's a classic
- 37:37Jon: It's, it's a more action version of, of the I Am Legend story.
- 37:44I figured that was a slash as soon as you hadn't seen it.
- 37:48Um
- 37:49Kearns: I can't, I can't vouch.
- 37:50But I, I get, I, I enjoyed your descriptions and your verbosity
- 37:55Ryan: It's, d- do you like this one, John?
- 37:59Jon: I like it.
- 38:00It's, I don't like it as much as Last Man on Earth.
- 38:03Ryan: Uh, the, you're a Vincent Price fan, so that's understandable, and that
- 38:07is a great adaptation what it's worth.
- 38:10Hard to get ahold of on DVD, so,
- 38:14Jon: It's in, I believe it's in one of the, uh, Shout!
- 38:17Factory price collections.
- 38:20I definitely have physical copies of it.
- 38:22Ryan: I need to pick that up with House on Haunted Hill,
- 38:25but that's a whole other story
- 38:27Jon: All right.
- 38:27Movie number two, Hush
- 38:33Ryan: I like this film.
- 38:34I really do.
- 38:35I think it's… You hated this film?
- 38:40This is, that's… I'm gonna slash it though, but I do
- 38:45Kearns: You must have loved it.
- 38:46Ryan: I, I did.
- 38:47I don't know what, he put Omega Man and then Hush.
- 38:50I don't know what else is
- 38:51Kearns: I do love her, speaking of House on Haunted Hill.
- 38:55All right?
- 38:56Isn't she the actress in all of those, yeah, on Netflix?
- 38:59Yeah, she's fantastic.
- 39:01Um, but I did not dig Hu- Hush, The Strangers, like, those movies
- 39:08are never gonna hit for me.
- 39:09The home invasion
- 39:11Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 39:15Kearns: Eh, just feel like it's lazy.
- 39:17I know.
- 39:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 39:18Kearns: fun at parties, everybody.
- 39:20Um, actually I really am, but this not, not my kinda film.
- 39:25Slash.
- 39:27These are
- 39:27Jon: I think you're…
- 39:28Kearns: John?
- 39:29Are these quiet movies
- 39:31Jon: no, but you're sort of in the ballpark.
- 39:34Kearns: Yeah
- 39:35Jon: Sort of in the ballpark.
- 39:36Movie number three.
- 39:39The Blair Witch Project
- 39:41Kearns: They're alone in the woods.
- 39:42Hush, she's alone in the house.
- 39:44Omega Man, he's alone, period.
- 39:47Movies where you're alone
- 39:49Jon: Uh, yeah.
- 39:49I mean, I, I, I'll say that.
- 39:51it's movies where you're alone or really sparse casting, like
- 39:55Ryan: Okay.
- 39:56Jon: of characters.
- 39:58Kearns: That works.
- 39:59All right.
- 40:00I
- 40:00Jon: The Blair Witch.
- 40:01Kearns: I liked Blair Witch.
- 40:02I didn't like what it caused.
- 40:05It caused
- 40:06Jon: Mm-hmm
- 40:08Kearns: I'm such an old man, but the found footage thing went, like, haywire.
- 40:11Certain things hit and certain things didn't.
- 40:13I think I would call Cloverfield largely a failure due to the
- 40:18found footage aspect of the movie.
- 40:21Ryan: Wow.
- 40:22Kearns: Have you watched it again?
- 40:24Ryan: I haven't watched it recently, no, but
- 40:25Kearns: watching it again and seeing what they did with the found footage parts.
- 40:28It's horrific
- 40:30Ryan: It, it was hard to watch the first time with the camcorder moving around
- 40:34Kearns: It's terrible.
- 40:36it's terrible.
- 40:37Blair
- 40:37Jon: But
- 40:38Kearns: that better
- 40:38Jon: I would say this about Cloverfield, and to be a little somber, just passing
- 40:44the 25th anniversary of 9/11 and watching some of the footage from that again,
- 40:50Cloverfield captures to a small extent some of the panic in that footage.
- 40:57Kearns: True.
- 40:58Jon: The, that, yeah, I, I, you know, I, I would imagine…
- 41:02I haven't seen Cloverfield in a few years.
- 41:04I would imagine the further away you get, it sort of diminishes
- 41:09Kearns: It do- to me it does.
- 41:11And I guess Kaijus, maybe that's why it's so popular in Japan because
- 41:14of that whole aspect of their culture having been nuked twice.
- 41:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 41:19Kearns: not, you know, dance around it, and that's what
- 41:22Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 41:23Kearns: and all that.
- 41:23Jon: Yeah.
- 41:24Kearns: if you watch Minus One or, and Minus Zero, that's gonna be coming out
- 41:28too, I mean, he nukes the city in it.
- 41:32It's, they do the whole thing, mushroom cloud and everything.
- 41:35So not even ambiguous in that.
- 41:38So I think, um, with Cloverfield you might be nailing it.
- 41:41That might've been like our post 9/11 sort of Kaiju experience
- 41:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 41:47Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 41:48Jon: it feels like a thing.
- 41:49So are we stashing or slashing Blue Witch?
- 41:52Kearns: he's pushing us along, everybody.
- 41:53Jon: Yeah.
- 41:54Kearns: puts Baby in a corner except the Blair Witch.
- 41:57I'm gonna stash it.
- 41:58Jon: All right
- 41:59Kearns: get that reference, we can be friends.
- 42:01Ryan: Dirty Dancing.
- 42:03Kearns: Not that one.
- 42:04In the end of the movie, he's standing in the
- 42:05Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 42:06Kearns: the worst
- 42:06Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 42:08Kearns: and
- 42:08Jon: see, I
- 42:10Kearns: I was like,
- 42:10Jon: see that, that kind, that, that ending kind of feels like the end of
- 42:15Undertone for me, but we'll get there
- 42:18Kearns: Thank-- You're gonna get into why I'm so lukewarm
- 42:21on undertone when we get there.
- 42:22Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 42:23Ryan,
- 42:24Ryan: I
- 42:25Jon: slash or stash?
- 42:26Ryan: I don't know what else you got.
- 42:27I, you know what?
- 42:29Ugh, I'll stash it.
- 42:32I love the Blair Witch Project.
- 42:34Watching it 3:00 in the morning is just an experience
- 42:40Kearns: I
- 42:40Jon: Brian, I…
- 42:41Kearns: the woods as a kid and saw weird stuff.
- 42:43Not like weird witchy and whatnot, but I was out there and it's spooky, and
- 42:49the Blair Witch kind of reminded me of those good old days of, you know, running
- 42:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 42:55Ryan: It was, I remember it, um, at the movie theater I would attend, like the
- 43:01line for the movie would be ridiculous just for people waiting to go see it.
- 43:06Like
- 43:07Kearns: was a phenomenon.
- 43:09Yeah.
- 43:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:10Yeah.
- 43:11Yeah.
- 43:11Kearns: in mind when it came out too, there was nothing else to do.
- 43:14weren't going on TikTok every night and stuff
- 43:17Jon: Mm. Yeah.
- 43:17Yeah.
- 43:18Uh, so Ryan, how do you feel with only one stash left?
- 43:24Little nervous?
- 43:25Ryan: after you said that, yes
- 43:27Jon: Little nervous?
- 43:27All right.
- 43:28Movie number four, 10 Cloverfield Lane
- 43:33Ryan: Oh, s- slash.
- 43:35Kearns: Yeah, you know it's, you know it's, it's bad.
- 43:37You know it's bad.
- 43:38I know I'm gonna regret this, but I … John Goodman sells
- 43:41this movie for me so hard.
- 43:43Ryan: it.
- 43:43Kearns: I might.
- 43:44Dude, John Goodman in a, fallout shelter with big tubs of acid
- 43:48to dissolve your body, come on.
- 43:51Jon: Uh-huh
- 43:51Kearns: The, every aspect of it that has to do with the monsters is terrible.
- 43:56That whole sequence where she's running from the aliens and they're
- 43:58blowing up cars and stuff, that stunk up the s- the whole movie.
- 44:01The best part was John Goodman.
- 44:04Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:04Kearns: you're, you're trapped in there with John, and
- 44:07Jon: Yep.
- 44:08Kearns: from Roseanne.
- 44:09Ah,
- 44:09Jon: No.
- 44:10Kearns: know what?
- 44:10I am going to slash it because the existence of it as 10
- 44:13Cloverfield Lane bothers me.
- 44:16another movie, I would've enjoyed it.
- 44:18Jon: Mm-hmm
- 44:19Kearns: But I'm gonna stick to my laurels on this one and just say
- 44:22we gotta get rid of it because the, the just adding stuff to Cloverfield
- 44:26because you can buy it, stupid
- 44:29Jon: Yeah.
- 44:30Yeah.
- 44:31All right.
- 44:32Moving along, movie number five is I Am Legend
- 44:36Kearns: I'm gonna keep this one 'cause it gave my wife a crush on me when I, uh,
- 44:40was, I was upset to find out that Sam was a girl dog, and she saw I was upset by
- 44:44that, and she started to look at me in a romantical kind of way in, like, 2008.
- 44:50So it helped me bag my bitch.
- 44:52I'm gonna keep it, stash it.
- 44:58You like that?
- 44:58That's called, that's called a fellas.
- 45:02You lead them, you know, off
- 45:03Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:03Kearns: direction and then whoop
- 45:08Ryan: I'm slashing it.
- 45:09I got the Omega Man.
- 45:11Kearns: Yeah, you got the original, or one of the originals.
- 45:13You don't need the copy.
- 45:15This was,
- 45:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:15Uh,
- 45:15Kearns: could've had a better ending too, to be honest
- 45:18Ryan: he's gonna put Last Man on Earth on here.
- 45:20I know it
- 45:22Kearns: Eat your
- 45:23Jon: bye.
- 45:23Ryan: It, it's only, it's only Vincent Price, I think,
- 45:26Kearns: Well, the ga-- are the gas prices as high as they were
- 45:28in this movie yet, by the way?
- 45:30I think we're getting close
- 45:32Jon: I think we're getting pretty close.
- 45:34Kearns: I think they're around $10 at a gallon in New York City in this movie.
- 45:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:39Kearns: maybe not
- 45:40Jon: Yeah.
- 45:40Kearns: there yet.
- 45:42What a wonderful time to be alive.
- 45:43What's next?
- 45:45Jon: Next movie, Misery.
- 45:48Kearns: I only have one stash left too then, right?
- 45:50Jon: Yep, you both only have one stash left.
- 45:53Kearns: we have one movie after this, correct?
- 45:55Jon: Ooh, and there are two movies after this.
- 45:57This is only sixth.
- 45:59Kearns: you cockadoodie dum-dum head.
- 46:01gonna have to get rid of this because I enjoy Misery, but like, I- it's fine.
- 46:08don't like, I don't like rub the DVD case on my nipples before I go to bed.
- 46:13Ryan: You sure?
- 46:14Kearns: I, I'm positive.
- 46:15Ryan: not on
- 46:16Kearns: Although, Castle Rock, what Castle Rock did with the Annie Wilkes character,
- 46:21we should talk about that for six hours.
- 46:23Turning her into a hero if you watch the Castle Rock series.
- 46:26Season two turns Annie Wilkes into like the most badass character ever
- 46:32Ryan: like she's misunderstood.
- 46:33She's just got a couple screws loose.
- 46:35I mean, if the screws were screwed,
- 46:37Kearns: the road to hell is paved in good intentions, Ryan's wearing
- 46:41the freaking construction hat.
- 46:43Jon: Ja.
- 46:44Ryan: I'm
- 46:44Kearns: to be burned to a crisp and then buried under rocks like that, whatever the
- 46:50monster was in that Irish movie we saw.
- 46:52She's not worth saving, buddy.
- 46:55Ryan: So call the boys from county hell.
- 46:57I
- 46:57Kearns: it
- 46:57Jon: Ja.
- 46:58Ryan: Got it.
- 46:59Jon: Ja
- 47:00Ryan: it.
- 47:00But I'm slashing it too.
- 47:01The
- 47:01Kearns: You gotta.
- 47:02'Cause I know it's coming up.
- 47:04I like the movie, I love the book.
- 47:05I'm not doing it.
- 47:06Ryan: up?
- 47:06What do you think is coming up?
- 47:08Kearns: I d- I know it's gonna be good.
- 47:09That's what I know.
- 47:11I don't, I don't know much, but I know what John is.
- 47:16Ryan: Oh.
- 47:17Jon: man.
- 47:18Kearns: a smart man.
- 47:19That's the line.
- 47:19Thank you
- 47:20Ryan: F- Forrest Gump would be a good choice.
- 47:23There's a lot of characters
- 47:24Jon: There's way too many characters in Forrest Gump.
- 47:27Ryan: say
- 47:28Jon: The whole f-
- 47:29Kearns: this,
- 47:30Jon: the whole 20th century is in that movie
- 47:33Kearns: Good call, John.
- 47:35Fair point.
- 47:36Um, let's hit it
- 47:39Jon: Movie number seven is where I think it gets interesting for you guys.
- 47:45There's The Last Man on Earth
- 47:47Kearns: Da, da, da, da, da, da
- 47:50Jon: I gue- I guess you have to ask yourself, did I put something
- 47:54better in the last spot, or did I put garbage in the last spot?
- 47:59Kearns: Historically speaking, yes, but there's no, there is no limit to
- 48:04your fuckery, so you very well could have anticipated, correctly anticipated
- 48:08that we would know that and panic pick skip this, and then there's a dud next.
- 48:15But I haven't seen this either, so
- 48:18Jon: Oh, they, then this is going on next year's calendar,
- 48:20'cause this I think is great
- 48:22Ryan: this
- 48:22Kearns: gotta do it
- 48:23Ryan: this is, I'm stashing it.
- 48:25I remember watching this on Syfy when Syfy used to show horror films and was good.
- 48:31And it was on the afternoon, and what got me was Vincent Price plays Neville,
- 48:38and it's just really a one-man show, and how they utilize the vampires to
- 48:41be in the darkness, and black and white makes, like, the atmosphere better.
- 48:47It's, it's such a great watch, and it's, it's a good
- 48:50Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 48:50Ryan: of the I Am Legend story
- 48:52Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 48:52Jon: Yep.
- 48:53Kearns: All
- 48:53Jon: Yep.
- 48:54Kearns: it.
- 48:55I'll, I'll revisit it once we watch it.
- 48:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 48:58Kearns: gamble on this one.
- 48:59Let's see what John's got for me
- 49:00Jon: I think, I think you're gonna be happy with your choice here, Kearns.
- 49:06Last movie is The Lighthouse
- 49:09Kearns: cool with that, yeah.
- 49:11Ryan: Oh, man.
- 49:12Kearns: This one reminds me of my stepdad, though.
- 49:14If we clip this out, my mom will laugh when she sees this.
- 49:17I'm
- 49:17Jon: Oh, listen Ri- Ryan, you, you were done once you picked Omega Man
- 49:22Ryan: What?
- 49:23Kearns: Yeah, it's true
- 49:24Ryan: I love the Omega Man.
- 49:26Jon: I, I, I do too, but I knew you were done as soon as you picked that,
- 49:29'cause I knew you were gonna have to pick Last Man on Earth or I Am Legend also.
- 49:34Ryan: Well, I, I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of I Am Legend, that version.
- 49:38I like The Last Man on Earth and Omega Man better.
- 49:42Uh,
- 49:42Jon: too
- 49:43Ryan: does a good job with the story, but, uh, it's not, it's not Vincent,
- 49:49it's not Charlton Heston, but The Lighthouse, H.P. Lovecraft is throughout
- 49:54this whole film, in my opinion.
- 49:56The whole idea of, like, the space odyssey horror fantasy horror and all
- 50:00that, it just nails it, even though
- 50:03Jon: Yeah, it,
- 50:04Kearns: Odyssey
- 50:05Jon: it's, it's a,
- 50:07Ryan: Yeah.
- 50:07Jon: it's a shame that that movie doesn't exist in your world anymore
- 50:11Kearns: Yeah, you slashed it, you slashed it, you slashed it.
- 50:15Ryan: There's, there's always a way
- 50:18Kearns: good.
- 50:18It's cerebral.
- 50:19I like it.
- 50:20There's the mythological undertones without being overtly in your face.
- 50:23You get the Prometheus thing.
- 50:25You get great characterization in Pattinson's character, and you get the
- 50:28despicable, disgusting Dafoe character that does remind me of my stepdad.
- 50:32He would behave just like that if we were stuck in a lighthouse together,
- 50:35and we would kill each other.
- 50:37We would.
- 50:38That's, uh, like, I, I literally watched that movie like, "This
- 50:40is me and him. This is great."
- 50:42Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 50:43Kearns: And then you can wonder if he's ever even there.
- 50:46he ever even there at all?
- 50:48Jon: Yeah
- 50:48Kearns: The Dafoe character
- 50:50Ryan: and yes.
- 50:52I, I, have you seen The Lighthouse, John?
- 50:55Jon: Yeah.
- 50:55Kearns: Of
- 50:56Jon: I don't love it.
- 50:57Ryan: I would love to
- 50:58Jon: I don't love it.
- 50:59Ryan: our podcast because
- 51:01Jon: we can… I'm gonna, I'm gonna put it back to back with a movie
- 51:04called Cold Skin, which is another lighthouse movie that I like so
- 51:07much more than I like The Lighthouse
- 51:09Kearns: There's another, um, the, the Southern Reach, uh, trilogy w- weighs
- 51:14or leans heavily upon a lighthouse as well, if you've ever heard of it.
- 51:18Um, the movie, I can never remember the name of the damn first book or movie.
- 51:23Um, Annihilation with Natalie Portman, I believe is in it.
- 51:28Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 51:32Kearns: books is an insufferable jackass apparently as well, unfortunately.
- 51:36But the, the trilogy's very good, and it does do the lighthouses justice.
- 51:40So if you're into lighthouses and stuff, pick up that trilogy and read it
- 51:44Ryan: Word
- 51:45Kearns: So skeptic, believer, and reality.
- 51:47So who's the skeptic in the movie, everybody?
- 51:49Jon: Yep.
- 51:50so Evie's the skeptic and Justin is the believer.
- 51:54But what I'm curious about is at what point, if you're skeptical of something,
- 52:00does all the evidence that's in your, now in your house change you from skeptic to,
- 52:07"Ah, you know what? Maybe, maybe this is real." Because Evie, Evie is in denial
- 52:13right up until like the last 10 minutes when every- when it all hits the fan
- 52:18Kearns: Yeah
- 52:20Ryan: I don't think so.
- 52:21I think she's like in between.
- 52:22She doesn't wanna believe, but she's slowly believing
- 52:25as the movie con- continues.
- 52:27And yeah, she is skeptical 'cause she doesn't believe a lot of the
- 52:30stuff, but as she keeps seeing the things happen around her, she starts
- 52:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 52:36Ryan: I feel like it's a front just to
- 52:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 52:39Ryan: going and going forward basically.
- 52:42Justin though, Justin s- I feel like I agree with you based on your opinion in
- 52:47the beginning where he's like in between, he's full on after they start listening
- 52:52to the, uh, audio samples, and those audio samples, like you get the email
- 52:58message and you're like, "Okay," right?
- 53:00But then when you start hearing the audio samples, and it's like part
- 53:04after part after part, like you gotta realize like there's gotta be a point
- 53:08to stop even if you're curious 'cause
- 53:13Jon: I mean, but that, that's the thing.
- 53:16That's why I believe that Justin is fully playing a role.
- 53:19I think Justin is not, maybe not quite as skeptical as Evie, but he's playing
- 53:25a role that works for their show
- 53:30I, you know, I, I don't think he fully believes it either,
- 53:33which is why he keeps playing it.
- 53:35I mean, he could definitely at some point have put his foot down.
- 53:38I know Evie's driving continuing playing the files, but
- 53:45Justin, Justin has the files.
- 53:47He can stop playing them
- 53:49Ryan: Yeah, that is true.
- 53:51That's true.
- 53:52Damage adjusted.
- 53:54Jon: And nothing happens to him.
- 53:56Like, as far as we know,
- 53:58Ryan: Yeah.
- 53:59Jon: as we know, Just- Justin's just sitting in his living room
- 54:02recording podcasts while Evie's whole world is crashing down
- 54:07Kearns: I suppose that the entity who we'll talk about a little bit more in a
- 54:11second is, it's gotta pick and choose, and it picks Evie for a very specific reason
- 54:18Jon: Yeah, definitely
- 54:20Kearns: Definitely.
- 54:22Jon: It definitely.
- 54:24Kearns: So what's the reality?
- 54:26Jon: And the reality is what's happening to Evie.
- 54:30Kearns: Yeah.
- 54:30Jon: know, she, she is… Yeah.
- 54:34Yeah.
- 54:36And the, the que- the question we'll get into as we talk, get more towards
- 54:40the end is what the reality actually is that she's experiencing, because
- 54:45I have a very specific theory on how, the way this ends that we'll get to
- 54:55Ryan: Oh, all right.
- 54:55Jon: yeah.
- 54:57Yeah, but i-in the,
- 54:59Kearns: All
- 54:59Jon: in the meantime, we have a new demon
- 55:04Kearns: We do.
- 55:04And John, uh, brought this up to me today at work, and I was like… I,
- 55:08I didn't do a deep dive at all into it, but I saw the name and I was
- 55:10like, "Oh, that's fake." I was wrong.
- 55:13I was wrong.
- 55:14This is the real deal.
- 55:15It's got a whole bunch of history to it that we dove into
- 55:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 55:20Yeah, I went, I went looking further when I got home today.
- 55:23So the demon that they talk about in Undertone is Abyzou, which is… I'll
- 55:29spell it for you so, so people can go and look it up on their own, because it took
- 55:34me a little bit of trying to figure it out and trial and error to get a s- a spelling
- 55:40close enough to get a demon to come up.
- 55:42So it's A-B-Y-Z-O-U
- 55:49Kearns: There's another variation too.
- 55:50It's O-B-I-Z-U,
- 55:53Jon: mm-hmm.
- 55:53Kearns: which is, you know, I don't know what country came up with
- 55:56that one, but I like John's better.
- 55:59Jon: yeah, I like weird spellings of things, so that one works for me.
- 56:03so basically, I think if you understand this demon, some of the confusion
- 56:09about how Undertone ends is cleared up.
- 56:13like it's not a movie that, that spoon-feeds you a, a
- 56:17backstory, and maybe it should.
- 56:20It gives you a little bit about Abuzu being, you know, like a
- 56:23demon that preys on children and babies and infants and whatever.
- 56:28so Abuzu is a Near Eastern and European demon who in folklore causes miscarriages
- 56:35as well as the death of infants, and that's very important in Undertone
- 56:42because they make a point of telling you that Evie is six weeks pregnant.
- 56:48There's no other reason for that information in this movie except the demon
- 56:53Kearns: Right.
- 56:53And they, to
- 56:54Jon: It,
- 56:54Kearns: cause to go to EV
- 56:56Jon: mm-hmm.
- 56:57Yeah.
- 56:58Yep.
- 56:59And so the Abuzar of folklore is fueled by jealousy due to her own
- 57:05inability to conceive children.
- 57:07she never sleeps, perpetually wandering and looking for new victims.
- 57:14in the Testament of Solomon, she's described as having a greenish gleaming
- 57:19face with disheveled serpent-like hair
- 57:23Kearns: And that's where-- So there's a divergence that happened there
- 57:26'cause I saw all the similarities of Abzu and Lilith from Hebrew lore, and
- 57:33Lilith steals the life of, um, newborns because she doesn't have it, and
- 57:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 57:38Kearns: it's partially out of jealousy or envy of them and partially because
- 57:43she, that, like, sustains her in some way as a demon form all that.
- 57:49But Abzu diverges right there and goes straight Gorgon, y- you can kind of see
- 57:55that they derived Abzu from the Greek.
- 57:59and if you don't know what a Gorgon is, Medusa, for the listeners
- 58:03out there, is the prime Gorgon example, the snake hair and stuff.
- 58:06So it's like, ooh.
- 58:08So this is, this demon's, like, fresh in a few ways.
- 58:10It's not just a carbon copy of Lilith
- 58:12Jon: Yeah, yeah,
- 58:14Kearns: infant
- 58:14Jon: yeah, yeah.
- 58:16And then her body is just shrouded in darkness, so it's like this, this green
- 58:23disheveled face just floating in like a blur, which kind of makes that creepier
- 58:30Kearns: Yeah, it does
- 58:33Ryan: I
- 58:38Jon: So then, Ryan, let, let's see where, where you go with this 'cause I
- 58:38brought this up to Kearns earlier today.
- 58:41S- the existence of this demon in undertone and knowing that there's
- 58:46a demonic potential for a demon or a demonic possession, does this
- 58:52bring, like, Insidious to your mind?
- 58:54Ryan: Oh, 100%.
- 58:55100%
- 58:56Jon: Absolutely.
- 58:57Um, right down to the point, um, s- the question that, that I, I s- I sort of
- 59:05came to here is, so did the demon find a husk of a body in the dying mother to get
- 59:13clo-- to gain access to Evie and her baby?
- 59:16Or is the, this demon just able to exist within our world
- 59:22Ryan: I think the demon actually used the mother as a husk.
- 59:26I think she possessed the mother because, um, with the ending, like, it seemingly
- 59:35seems that the demon has taken over the mother as you hear the screams from Evie.
- 59:40But I was also thinking, you were, you mentioned Insidious, I was also
- 59:43thinking of Sinister with a lot of the drawings on the wall and just, like,
- 59:48Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 59:49Mm-hmm.
- 59:52Mm-hmm.
- 59:54Ryan: was thinking of Mr. Boogie and all that, and I'm like,
- 59:56Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:01Ryan: and it,
- 1:00:02Jon: Well,
- 1:00:02Ryan: it works.
- 1:00:03I- I, it does work
- 1:00:05Jon: Yeah, the, so I think to be specific, the thing that calls to mind Sinister
- 1:00:10is in those moments where Evie is sort of, not blacked out, but, you know,
- 1:00:17distracted or possessed or whatever.
- 1:00:21Her drawings are kind of similar to some of the drawings that the kids make of Mr.
- 1:00:27Boogie in Sinister
- 1:00:28Ryan: Absolutely.
- 1:00:30Even the whole
- 1:00:31Kearns: Ну, хорошо
- 1:00:32Ryan: like,
- 1:00:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:34Ryan: the drawings on the wall especially, I was like… It, I feel like, I don't
- 1:00:38know if it was, like, an homage or if it was like… I, I, I really don't know, but
- 1:00:44it, it works in the sense of this film.
- 1:00:46And, um,
- 1:00:47Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:52Ryan: really, really good.
- 1:00:53It's like they did something new too on top of that, if that
- 1:00:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:59Ryan: Like, they found a new way to, like, set up horror through this film
- 1:01:02Jon: Yeah.
- 1:01:03Yeah.
- 1:01:05Yeah, they, uh, I mean, I, I think, I think that part is very effective
- 1:01:12Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:13Jon: Abzu is there for a reason and that reason is Evie's baby and
- 1:01:22Ryan: Which you say it's like mentioned so quickly, right?
- 1:01:26I feel like it's a major plot point that it's a-- from a screenwriter's point of
- 1:01:33view, I feel like it's ignored and then it pops up because this is what the demon
- 1:01:38does, and then it gets stronger by the end, which is an interesting concept.
- 1:01:43'Cause like if
- 1:01:43Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:44Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:48Ryan: to be repeated more often, and no, it's like slapped in like t- like
- 1:01:51ten minutes into the film basically, and then we ignore it because of
- 1:01:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:58Ryan: But you get the
- 1:01:59Kearns: Foreshadowing.
- 1:02:02Ryan: which
- 1:02:03Jon: they bring, they bring her pregnancy up at least three times.
- 1:02:08There's the first time where she's talking to the doctor about coming in to
- 1:02:12get a pregnancy test, then there's the doctor calling her back to tell her that
- 1:02:16she's about six weeks pregnant, and then there's her calling about a women's clinic
- 1:02:24Ryan: Four, because she talks to her mom.
- 1:02:27Jon: Yes.
- 1:02:27That, yeah.
- 1:02:28Yeah, they're at four.
- 1:02:29Kearns: one.
- 1:02:30Yeah
- 1:02:31Jon: so, so they're sort of giving you that infor- Like, they, it,
- 1:02:35it's pretty, it's sorta interwoven in little bits throughout, where
- 1:02:41it, it's there for you to pick up
- 1:02:44Ryan: Which, a-again, it's just interesting for it to be the main
- 1:02:47theme and to be overshadowed by the
- 1:02:50Jon: Well,
- 1:02:51Ryan: the podcast
- 1:02:51Jon: I, I mean, there's a whole other main theme that I, I think I wanted
- 1:02:55us to get into a little bit too, and that's sort of the aging/ you know,
- 1:03:00like caretaking of an aging, dying parent thing that has really… Like,
- 1:03:07it really adds kind of a, like, a relatable creepiness, at least for me.
- 1:03:14Like, you know, being around a hospice and, and that is,
- 1:03:21it's like, it's kinda creepy
- 1:03:24Kearns: It's
- 1:03:24Jon: 'cause yeah.
- 1:03:26I mean, as- aside from the emotional elements of it, there's
- 1:03:30a creepiness to doing that, to knowing, you know, just down the
- 1:03:34hall there's someone actively dying.
- 1:03:39Ryan: It's
- 1:03:39Jon: And if, like, if you… It's tough, and if you believe in paranormal
- 1:03:44things, I would imagine you have to be even more creeped out in that regard.
- 1:03:50Kearns: Yeah
- 1:03:51Jon: that, that's kind of where Evie is throughout this movie.
- 1:03:55Like, even I, I don't think Evie's even re- uh, uh, clearly not
- 1:04:00remotely happy that she's pregnant.
- 1:04:02But I think then you, you add those two stressors of the dying parent and a
- 1:04:08pregnancy that she doesn't seem to want
- 1:04:13Ryan: She
- 1:04:13Jon: She's in a spot.
- 1:04:15Ryan: she's very indifferent the entire time.
- 1:04:17I, I'm happy you brought that up.
- 1:04:18I feel like there's moments like in the beginning where she is happy
- 1:04:21when she's talking to Justin, but then with her mom, like you can, like
- 1:04:26Jon: Hmm
- 1:04:26Ryan: she cares but there's a disdain 'cause she wants to live her life.
- 1:04:30And then her husband Darren, he's madly in love and she
- 1:04:35just, she treats him like shit.
- 1:04:38And
- 1:04:38Jon: I mean
- 1:04:39Ryan: uh, not like, not like I w- I don't wanna say treat like shit.
- 1:04:42She talks to him like shit is, is a better term on that
- 1:04:46Jon: Well, I have kind of some other thoughts on that where I
- 1:04:50think he's kind of the bad dude,
- 1:04:52Kearns: Oh, yeah?
- 1:04:53Jon: where, where is he?
- 1:04:56Ryan: That is
- 1:04:56Jon: is he?
- 1:04:57Now, what- the woman you love is in a different place taking
- 1:05:03care of her dying mother.
- 1:05:05Where are you?
- 1:05:07Kearns: He's playing Xbox, man.
- 1:05:08He's
- 1:05:09Ryan: It…
- 1:05:09Jon: Yeah.
- 1:05:10Kearns: time.
- 1:05:11Jon: he's playing Xbox and planning parties.
- 1:05:14Kearns: probably.
- 1:05:16Yeah, he's not a good
- 1:05:17Jon: Yeah, I mean, he's definitely planning parties because he
- 1:05:19invites her to come to one.
- 1:05:21Ryan: And she went and
- 1:05:23Jon: Mm-hmm
- 1:05:24Ryan: said she was gonna be back a couple hours.
- 1:05:26She came back in the dawn.
- 1:05:28Kearns: Well, I mean,
- 1:05:29Jon: She was, uh,
- 1:05:30Ryan: Yeah
- 1:05:30Jon: yeah.
- 1:05:31I mean, and l- and li- listen, like, but that's the complication of, you
- 1:05:39know, one of the difficult parts of caring for a dying person is do you
- 1:05:46put your whole life on hold to do that?
- 1:05:48Or do you try to work in some moments of levity for yourself?
- 1:05:52Because if you don't…
- 1:05:53Yeah.
- 1:05:54Kearns: But yeah, elder
- 1:05:56Jon: Yeah
- 1:05:56Kearns: one of the, um, least talked about and hardest things that somebody can
- 1:06:00do, and if it persists for three, four, five years, you're talking somebody's,
- 1:06:05you know, really upending their own existence to be a primary caregiver for
- 1:06:10someone else because there's no-- not enough state and government facilities
- 1:06:14to help with that sort of thing.
- 1:06:16It's
- 1:06:17Jon: Yeah
- 1:06:19Ryan: Uh, it, it is.
- 1:06:21It's, it's sad too in some spots.
- 1:06:25Like I went through a hospice situation and it's, uh, you know,
- 1:06:30you gotta do what you gotta do, but
- 1:06:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:36Yeah.
- 1:06:37Ryan: need breathing room and kinda like, I would say a reality check.
- 1:06:42Like,
- 1:06:43Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:44Ryan: like, uh, and it, and it's not a bad reality check, it's just
- 1:06:47the reality check of like, okay, this is what's happening, but
- 1:06:50Jon: Mm-hmm
- 1:06:51Ryan: have to continue to it good and make your life better and make
- 1:06:57that person proud and all that.
- 1:06:59So
- 1:07:00Jon: you, you ha- you have to go on living.
- 1:07:02I had a, you know, I have a briefer hospice experience.
- 1:07:07You know, my dad went in and wasn't there very long, and you know, he, but it was a
- 1:07:12process before that, and you have to make sure that you're doing the things for you
- 1:07:19Kearns: Right.
- 1:07:22No, makes sense.
- 1:07:23Man, this, this took a turn.
- 1:07:25Let's, let's bring it back to the light, guys
- 1:07:27Ryan: All
- 1:07:27Jon: about to take, another dark turn with the ending of this movie.
- 1:07:31Kearns: least that's more, that's less like life lesson, more movie.
- 1:07:35Jon: Yeah
- 1:07:36Kearns: the ending though?
- 1:07:37I, uh, I don't know.
- 1:07:39You can have a f- multiple interpretations
- 1:07:42Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:07:43S- so I'll give you mine, because we got to where it starts in that last part of
- 1:07:48the conversation, that it starts with the party and the invitation to the party.
- 1:07:55And my belief, I sort of thought it the first time I watched it, this is
- 1:08:00the second time I've seen Undertone, I don't know how many more times
- 1:08:03I will, but watching it this time, more tuned in for things to talk
- 1:08:07about, more, you know, watching as a experience than just a movie.
- 1:08:13I came to this concept that it's during that time where Evie's at
- 1:08:18the party that her mom actually dies
- 1:08:23Kearns: Oh yeah, that makes sense
- 1:08:24Ryan: yeah
- 1:08:25Jon: That she comes home and for, like, you know, in the context of the movie
- 1:08:31when you're just sort of passively watching or even not passively, with
- 1:08:35the tea kettle on the stove, you're like, "Oh, there's a ghost or something
- 1:08:39moving the tea kettle." And then you get upstairs and, and mom is on the floor.
- 1:08:45but what if mom got up?
- 1:08:47What if mom tried?
- 1:08:48What if mom, you know, in the night was, like, just functional enough that last…
- 1:08:53Like, there's a, a lot of stories about those last, like, few hours of rally
- 1:08:59where it's like, "Oh, this… Maybe this isn't gonna end bad. It- she's coming
- 1:09:04around, she's coming," and then gone.
- 1:09:07You know, is that one of those situ- But my belief is mom dies while Evie is at the
- 1:09:12party, and everything that happens after that is, like, a guilt psychosis within
- 1:09:18Evie, where, you know, most of the stuff that's happening isn't even necessarily
- 1:09:24happening and that would, you know, that's why I, the, I unalived my mom comes out.
- 1:09:31That's why a lot of that stuff comes out in the end, that she… There's this
- 1:09:37massive weight on her for not being there
- 1:09:41Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:09:43Yeah.
- 1:09:44Ryan: really
- 1:09:45Kearns: all of this other stuff is just her r- her guilt and there's no
- 1:09:48paranormal aspect to it whatsoever.
- 1:09:50It's all psychosis
- 1:09:53That's not the ending at all, but what if?
- 1:09:57That is one of the theories
- 1:09:59Ryan: It's a, it's a good theory, and it makes sense because of that.
- 1:10:02I did think that the mom is unalive on the floor.
- 1:10:07Uh, but it, it questions of why she keeps her mom in the bed still and
- 1:10:12not calling someone to pick her up, but that could be because of the guilt
- 1:10:16Jon: I think that would be the guilt, the guilt in it and the coping in it and the,
- 1:10:20you know, how embarrassing would it be to, call the nurse who, you know, was pretty
- 1:10:26specific that it could happen at any time and be like, "Hey, I went out last
- 1:10:30night and my mom died while I was out."
- 1:10:33Kearns: Well, I mean, it's not like she could've done anything about it.
- 1:10:35Jon: Yeah, no, there's nothing she could've done, but there's just that,
- 1:10:41that, you know, guilt and probably shame that comes with that kind of thing, that
- 1:10:47I wasn't there when I needed to be there.
- 1:10:49Ryan: Yep
- 1:10:50Jon: I think that that's a very real experience in a
- 1:10:53lot of real-life situations.
- 1:10:55Or, you know, maybe it's just not that deep and there's a demon
- 1:10:58that possesses her at the end and, you know, it's come for her baby
- 1:11:02Kearns: razor, I'm pretty sure that that's the real ending
- 1:11:05Jon: I think that's probably really what it is, but I, I like my idea better.
- 1:11:10Kearns: religious wards in the house and stuff too, and maybe when the
- 1:11:13Jon: Mm-hmm
- 1:11:14Kearns: that those protections fade away completely, and then
- 1:11:18that gives Ebizu enough of an in
- 1:11:22Ryan: on something because she does say I should have prayed with
- 1:11:26her I unalived her, which leads to that demon taking over good old mom
- 1:11:34Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:11:35Ryan: and her baby out of her, which I think happened because
- 1:11:39those screams I don't think are, those aren't like psychosis screams.
- 1:11:42That's the poor, that's poor Evie getting attacked and mauled
- 1:11:47good old mommy demon, uh, Abizu,
- 1:11:51Jon: Or just good old Demon Ebizu.
- 1:11:53Kearns: Yeah, it might be, she might just be there.
- 1:11:56Yeah.
- 1:11:57Uh, spooky, spooky
- 1:11:59Jon: that, at that point they've just invited that green-faced
- 1:12:02monstrosity into their house, into her house, and it's just there
- 1:12:08Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:12:08No,
- 1:12:09Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:12:10that's where the movie shines the most, I think, is the ambiguity of the ending.
- 1:12:14Um, it's,
- 1:12:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:12:15Kearns: stuff Ryan pointed out in part one that's good too with the sound effects,
- 1:12:19the creeping dread, and things like that.
- 1:12:21But they, they didn't, they didn't botch the ending.
- 1:12:25And I won't say it's the greatest ending in the world, but I like
- 1:12:28ambiguous endings that aren't
- 1:12:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:12:30Mm-hmm.
- 1:12:33Kearns: stuff.
- 1:12:33This one's done right,
- 1:12:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:12:36Kearns: it makes you think a bit, and it keeps the movie with you
- 1:12:37for a bit longer, which is nice
- 1:12:40Jon: Yeah
- 1:12:41Ryan: I didn't think it was ambiguous.
- 1:12:43I, I'm, I felt closure.
- 1:12:44I'm like, "All right, she's done." That's, you know.
- 1:12:49Like, I feel like
- 1:12:51Kearns: Ambiguous in that you don't know what happens
- 1:12:53Ryan: Oh,
- 1:12:53Kearns: her.
- 1:12:54Jon: Yeah
- 1:12:55Ryan: right, I, I, I feel like she's unalived and the baby's gone.
- 1:13:00That's,
- 1:13:01Kearns: But do you know that?
- 1:13:03Ryan: my closure
- 1:13:04Kearns: Ambiguous.
- 1:13:06Ryan: You know what?
- 1:13:07Jon: I…
- 1:13:07Ryan: making a stand.
- 1:13:08That's my ending.
- 1:13:09Kearns: Yeah
- 1:13:10Jon: So the, the one part of that that I, I'm pretty sure of without
- 1:13:15a doubt is that the baby is gone
- 1:13:17Kearns: Yeah, 100%.
- 1:13:18100% baby, he's gone.
- 1:13:20But…
- 1:13:21Jon: you know, it's, it's just a question of whether, you know, you get the
- 1:13:25deepening of a psychosis or a demon.
- 1:13:28Kearns: Yep
- 1:13:29Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:13:29Jon: And where do you-- where can you tell the difference between them?
- 1:13:32One person's psychosis is another person's demon
- 1:13:36Kearns: That is fair.
- 1:13:37Perception and
- 1:13:38Jon: That's,
- 1:13:39Kearns: Well, it's
- 1:13:40Jon: that, that,
- 1:13:40Kearns: consider what we do, guys.
- 1:13:43Jon: yeah, that, that's where exorcisms happen.
- 1:13:46Like
- 1:13:47Kearns: Yep.
- 1:13:48person's reality is another person's supernatural
- 1:13:52Ryan: The demon will leave you now
- 1:13:55Kearns: But yeah, I mean, it was, it's a good ending.
- 1:13:58It's a good ending.
- 1:13:58You can definitely put a rubber stamp of good on it.
- 1:14:01But all right,
- 1:14:02Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:14:04Yeah, let's do some reviews.
- 1:14:06They're, lower than I expected them to be because I, until I went…
- 1:14:10Kearns: I'm telling you,
- 1:14:11Jon: I went, yeah.
- 1:14:13I w- I went
- 1:14:14Kearns: were like, were like looking at their phones and
- 1:14:16getting bored and stuff 'cause the
- 1:14:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:14:18It's a very slow burn.
- 1:14:23so it's 73% critics, 50% audience.
- 1:14:27And up until I went looking for reviews, I had never… I, I've
- 1:14:31seen people post about it, and I'd never seen anything awful about it.
- 1:14:35But we're, we're gonna get there.
- 1:14:37we'll start with a five-star though, 'cause we always start with the good.
- 1:14:40And then, so this is translated.
- 1:14:42I'm not sure what language it was originally in.
- 1:14:44I didn't even recognize most of it, so it, you know, take that for what it is.
- 1:14:50five stars.
- 1:14:51"I really don't know why there's so much hate.
- 1:14:54I understand it doesn't have a trigger, but the constant tension and the
- 1:14:59complete absence of jump scares make the film, from my humble point of
- 1:15:04view, a work of art that surpasses The Conjuring, which I think is overrated.
- 1:15:10Anyway, I'm getting off topic.
- 1:15:13If you don't listen to it with headphones or a good audio
- 1:15:16player, it loses its impact.
- 1:15:19I love how it uses real myths to create an incredible plot."
- 1:15:23Kearns: I love that review.
- 1:15:24Ryan: That's a really good
- 1:15:25Jon: It's a really good review.
- 1:15:27Kearns: That
- 1:15:27Jon: Yeah
- 1:15:29Kearns: I don't necessarily
- 1:15:30Jon: They…
- 1:15:30Kearns: with them, but I like the way they
- 1:15:32Jon: Yeah.
- 1:15:33Yeah.
- 1:15:33Kearns: it
- 1:15:34Jon: Yeah, I li- I like that it's, it's thought out and it's
- 1:15:37not just, "This is a great movie.
- 1:15:40You need to watch it." You know?
- 1:15:43I d- I definitely appreciate that.
- 1:15:46Some of these one stars get into some interesting territory with this.
- 1:15:50Uh, one star, "I have been watching horror movies for over 40 years," and
- 1:15:57you can predict where this is gonna go from here, "and Undertone was not only
- 1:16:02the worst horror movie I've ever seen,
- 1:16:05Kearns: dude
- 1:16:05Jon: absolutely one of the worst movies, period!"
- 1:16:11Exclamation point.
- 1:16:14Ryan: Oh, that's it?
- 1:16:15There is no taste in
- 1:16:16Jon: That's the review.
- 1:16:17That is, that is the review.
- 1:16:19Uh, listen,
- 1:16:22Kearns: Give
- 1:16:22Jon: I,
- 1:16:23you, uh,
- 1:16:24Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:16:24Jon: you haven't dug that, deep if Undertone is the
- 1:16:27worst movie you've ever seen
- 1:16:28Ryan: Evil Dead burned
- 1:16:30Kearns: Way worse.
- 1:16:31Jon: Y- you ha- you haven't dug very deep if Evil Dead Burn is
- 1:16:35the worst one you've ever seen.
- 1:16:36Kearns: True
- 1:16:38Ryan: II, the second remake.
- 1:16:40Kearns: we,
- 1:16:41Jon: you…
- 1:16:41Kearns: count sequels because
- 1:16:43Jon: Yeah
- 1:16:43Kearns: on a diff- they're on their own tier of bad
- 1:16:47Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:16:47Ryan: Fair
- 1:16:48Jon: Yeah.
- 1:16:49There, there's so many worse movies than this one.
- 1:16:53so this half star I titled Obsession Obsessed.
- 1:16:57I'm not gonna give the screen name, but I think you can probably guess
- 1:17:00where the screen name for this is if it's Obsession Obsessed.
- 1:17:04"Half a star.
- 1:17:06Movie was awful.
- 1:17:08Wouldn't recommend for my horror movie lovers.
- 1:17:12No jump scares within the whole movie.
- 1:17:14The whole time it felt like it was building up for a jump
- 1:17:17scare and nothing ever happened.
- 1:17:20The best we got was a freaking pencil snapping in half.
- 1:17:24The whole movie was just trying to make the viewers paranoid by making nothing
- 1:17:30happen, and it failed horribly." Sounds like it succeeded terrifically if
- 1:17:35that's what you think it was going for.
- 1:17:38"The ending was terrible. Don't even get me started."
- 1:17:43Kearns: of imagination, gotta love it.
- 1:17:44But the, gripe is something that I definitely, I griped about earlier though.
- 1:17:49Jon: Yeah.
- 1:17:50Kearns: like, tr- uh, tension without payoff.
- 1:17:53There's, beats you expect as a, movie watcher, and some of those beats never
- 1:17:58come in this, but it's not enough to make this dumbass's, uh, opinion valid at all.
- 1:18:05Jon: Well, if you didn't like that one, this one's short,
- 1:18:09not very sweet, half a star
- 1:18:12Kearns: Ugh
- 1:18:12Jon: from a person… I j- I just wanna give you another
- 1:18:15review that this person had.
- 1:18:17Five stars for Scream VII
- 1:18:21Kearns: We should be using these reviews to, like, figure out who
- 1:18:24gets deported because I don't wanna breathe the same air as
- 1:18:29Jon: Should get, should get deported to the moon for some of these opinions.
- 1:18:33Kearns: real
- 1:18:34Jon: Um, half a star.
- 1:18:36Extremely pretentious and boring.
- 1:18:40How dreadful.
- 1:18:42Kearns: Not pretentious.
- 1:18:44Ryan: Is that
- 1:18:44Jon: That's the, that's
- 1:18:45Kearns: be, it could be boring in your mind.
- 1:18:48I could accept that as your take, but I
- 1:18:50Jon: There's the… Mm-hmm.
- 1:18:53I, I don't agree that it's boring necessarily, but I
- 1:18:56can see where you get there.
- 1:18:57It's, uh, it's slow.
- 1:18:59Ryan: It's
- 1:18:59Jon: It's
- 1:19:00Kearns: to watch the
- 1:19:01Jon: very slow.
- 1:19:02Kearns: It's not
- 1:19:03Jon: yeah, and that's not, that's not something that a lot of people, especially
- 1:19:07someone who gives Scream VII five stars, are particularly comfortable doing
- 1:19:11Ryan: Scream VII's a longer film, and this one's only like 90 minutes
- 1:19:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:19:17Kearns: 대해서 扇 S 万 美 元 incon goodness more ДонецNotre, や か samba, no
- 1:19:23Донец Airbus tastbedarf retorted 最 多 宿 泊 out 陷 indok 价 值 观 다ervi,
- 1:19:30Jon: Okay, so that, that's where some other people are.
- 1:19:34What do you guys think?
- 1:19:35Kearns: Ryan or Kearns?
- 1:19:36Ryan or Kearns?
- 1:19:37Ryan: I'll go first.
- 1:19:38I'm
- 1:19:38Kearns: Okay.
- 1:19:39Ryan: four and a half stars.
- 1:19:41I really, I really, I really
- 1:19:43Kearns: I'm so glad he went first
- 1:19:45Ryan: I didn't-- Listen, I didn't think I was going to enjoy it.
- 1:19:47I, I'm not a big fan of the paranormal films.
- 1:19:50Like, I enjoy The Conjuring 'cause you watch it f- one time, you get the scares,
- 1:19:55and it's a decent movie for what it is.
- 1:19:59But with this, it was like I felt the goosebumps, I felt the chills.
- 1:20:04And yes, it does do that lead-up, but I feel like that's with the
- 1:20:07music, that's with the camera angles, it's throwing you off.
- 1:20:10And, the director, oh, um,
- 1:20:17T… I'm, I'm gonna butcher his name.
- 1:20:20I don't wanna butcher his name.
- 1:20:21But he does a great job with the writing, and I think he does a great
- 1:20:25job with the directing, and he hits it.
- 1:20:29And the thing is, is like horror, like I say, doesn't have to be,
- 1:20:33it doesn't have to be like bloody.
- 1:20:35It doesn't have to be gory.
- 1:20:36It can be good with the what?
- 1:20:39Uh, it can be good with the, with
- 1:20:42Kearns: just say whore.
- 1:20:43You're, you're just sneaking it in there to say whore all the time.
- 1:20:47You say, you say horror like George W. Bush says terror.
- 1:20:52Ryan: Horror.
- 1:20:54Jon: Oh
- 1:20:55Ryan: But Ian Tussant does a great job, I think, in this horror film, and he brings
- 1:21:02a lot of aspects you haven't seen in a long while, which is the slow burn, and
- 1:21:07it's something that needs to come back.
- 1:21:09So four and a half stars.
- 1:21:11This
- 1:21:12Jon: All right.
- 1:21:12Ryan: movie
- 1:21:13Kearns: So gracious of Ryan to give this four and a half
- 1:21:16Jon: You, you are gonna be a, a very big outlier here, I think, sir.
- 1:21:21Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:21:21Um, I'm gonna
- 1:21:21Jon: Kerns
- 1:21:22Kearns: I'm not gonna go below the 50% line, of course.
- 1:21:25Like, it's not a two-and-a-half star movie or anything like that.
- 1:21:27I think I, I be able to push it up to a 3.75 to, like, be gracious,
- 1:21:32but I don't think it's there, man.
- 1:21:34I think this is a 3.25 to a 3.5, and I'm leaning closer to 3.25.
- 1:21:39There's some missed opportunities, and like I said, I, I, I don't know
- 1:21:43if there was a budgetary thing.
- 1:21:44I know we're living in the age of, like, movies being made on nothing, they're
- 1:21:49trying to just hit these major box office milestones and stuff like Obsession
- 1:21:52did, if that's what they were going for.
- 1:21:54But there was-- there's some things they really nailed too.
- 1:21:58And so I'm-- I'll push it up to 3.5 for that reason from 3.25 'cause it is good.
- 1:22:03I do like the ambiguity of the ending.
- 1:22:05I think that when you end a movie well, you should be rewarded by the viewer
- 1:22:09for, like, enjoying that kind of thing.
- 1:22:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:22:16Kearns: like Ryan was saying, is good.
- 1:22:18I think they lean a little bit too much on the
- 1:22:22nonsense.
- 1:22:22That kind of takes me out of the
- 1:22:23Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:22:24Kearns: a bit, but it was good.
- 1:22:26Jon: Yeah.
- 1:22:27Yeah, I'll agree with you on that part for sure because I don't know about you
- 1:22:30guys, I never heard the backwards stuff,
- 1:22:33Kearns: No, I tried
- 1:22:34Jon: just, it just sounded garbled.
- 1:22:36I went back a couple times trying to hear it, and I just never heard it.
- 1:22:41Ryan: No, it's just all mumble
- 1:22:44Jon: Yeah.
- 1:22:45Yeah.
- 1:22:45So I'm gonna go a little higher than Kearns and lower than Ryan.
- 1:22:51I'm at a 3.75.
- 1:22:53Ryan: Okay
- 1:22:53Jon: I, I really like a lot of what they do.
- 1:22:56I'll push back on the reviews with the lack of jump scares because a
- 1:23:01lot of mainstream horror has become so reliant on the jump scare to be
- 1:23:08the thing that, that makes you jump.
- 1:23:10You, like, you don't need a jump scare all the time.
- 1:23:14You can build atmosphere that culminates in a single moment without it being
- 1:23:20like every five minutes something pops out of the shadows, and ultimately
- 1:23:24you forget what it was anyway.
- 1:23:26Kearns: Right
- 1:23:28Jon: You don't forget the end of Undertone, whether you
- 1:23:31understood it, whether you liked it, whether you didn't like it.
- 1:23:34That ending stays.
- 1:23:36It's not like, ah, something jumped out of the shadows and got her
- 1:23:41Ryan: Yeah
- 1:23:42Jon: I, like it.
- 1:23:43I, you know, I felt like they coulda done a little bit more with it.
- 1:23:48I don't know what, you know, like, Kerns, you brought up
- 1:23:51budgetary constraints and whatever.
- 1:23:54But yeah, it, it's a 3.75 for me
- 1:23:57Kearns: Okay.
- 1:23:58That seems fair.
- 1:24:00All right, gentlemen, let's get, uh, let's get some top fives rolling here, buddies
- 1:24:05Ryan: All right, so my top fives this week are my top five slow burn movies.
- 1:24:09So we're gonna stick with horror.
- 1:24:11And number five is, uh, this might be a shocker.
- 1:24:15It's directed by Wes Craven.
- 1:24:17Uh, it came out in
- 1:24:18Jon: Is it Shocker?
- 1:24:19Ryan: No, that, that is definitely not a slow burn.
- 1:24:22It's a, it's a shocking burn, though.
- 1:24:26Oh, you guys aren't…
- 1:24:27Yeah, you guys aren't on
- 1:24:28Jon: That's called the Shocker
- 1:24:31Ryan: but my, my number five is The Serpent and
- 1:24:35Kearns: Guess what we're doing that's inappropriate off camera and the word
- 1:24:38shocker's been thrown around seven times, uh, and we have the maturity
- 1:24:42of frigging, like, third graders
- 1:24:48Jon: It gets worse the later we go, so
- 1:24:51Ryan: It gets funner, funner.
- 1:24:52But my, I'm gonna start off with The, and the Rainbow.
- 1:24:56if you guys have never seen it, it's based on the nonfiction book of the same
- 1:25:01name by ethnobotanist Wade Davis, wherein Davis re-encountered his experiences in
- 1:25:09Haiti investigating the story of Claverius Narcisse, who was allegedly poisoned,
- 1:25:13buried alive, and revived with a herbal brew which produced was called a zombie.
- 1:25:18It's a s- slow burn horror film.
- 1:25:21Um, Craven put certain scenes which are shock horror and jump horror.
- 1:25:27to get from the buildup with Bill Pullman investigating and
- 1:25:31understanding what this formula does, it's very unique and different,
- 1:25:35especially for Wes Craven in 1988
- 1:25:38Kearns: It's super cool, and they really, lean on the hoodoo voodoo stuff that
- 1:25:42the Haitians were known for as well.
- 1:25:44the zombification of people within that religion was, like, a thing.
- 1:25:48It got adopted by cartels and stuff later, but beforehand it was like a
- 1:25:52shaman did it to you out of revenge.
- 1:25:54You could hire someone to do it to somebody.
- 1:25:57trippy.
- 1:25:57Dean Koontz wrote a book,
- 1:25:59Jon: Mm-hmm
- 1:25:59Kearns: um, called Darkness leans heavily on, on Serpent and the Rainbow, too.
- 1:26:04It's a fantastic read if you guys haven't gotten into it yet
- 1:26:08Ryan: I'd be interested.
- 1:26:09Um, I was introduced to this movie real quick, uh, in college.
- 1:26:13Uh, I had to do a project on, like, culture and, uh, the teacher actually
- 1:26:18recommended it 'cause of what I was doing in television production, uh,
- 1:26:22The Serpent and the Rainbow, and I got to read a couple of the excerpts from
- 1:26:26the book, and it's, it's interesting.
- 1:26:29It, it is interesting stuff.
- 1:26:31But that leads to number four.
- 1:26:33my fourth slow burn is from 1973, and that is The Exorcist.
- 1:26:38I mean, we all know the story.
- 1:26:41Regan gets possessed, the priests come to de-possess her, and we get a horrible
- 1:26:45sequel, and the third film is, is decent.
- 1:26:49But the first one is such a slow burn from the start of it, where you get
- 1:26:53Pazuzu unveiled, and you get the build-up of the trauma with what the priests are
- 1:26:59going through, what Regan and her, her mom is going through, and get this big
- 1:27:06climatic ending, and it's just, you wait for it, and it's just, it's so good.
- 1:27:11And if you haven't seen The Exorcist, I don't know what you've been doing.
- 1:27:14Came out in 1973.
- 1:27:16Watch it.
- 1:27:16But this one, this is You know, John let this happen and I appreciate it
- 1:27:23is number three is Rosemary's Baby.
- 1:27:27I always told it's a slow burn, but I was always told I was going to hate it.
- 1:27:34And thank you for giving me that experience to watch it because
- 1:27:39it's one of my favorite slow burns.
- 1:27:41And I don't understand why it's a slow burn it hits every point.
- 1:27:45Polanski does a great job
- 1:27:48Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:27:48Ryan: Mia Farrow as Rosemary's brilliant.
- 1:27:51You get the whole cult, the whole demonic, everything.
- 1:27:55And it's so hidden with a Manhattan luxury lifestyle.
- 1:28:02And it connects so well because the idea of evil is luxury at that time.
- 1:28:07And
- 1:28:08Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:28:08Ryan: giving up, I guess, yourself unwillingly for deals.
- 1:28:12It's just it's an interesting concept, especially since it came out before The
- 1:28:17Exorcist, which would feature more on the possession theme and more on the devil.
- 1:28:22It just it's such a unique film.
- 1:28:25And that leads to number two, which one of my favorites.
- 1:28:30It is a slow burn, in my opinion.
- 1:28:32And that's The Shining, Stanley Kubrick's from 1980.
- 1:28:35You know, here's Johnny.
- 1:28:37The buildup from the beginning of him getting the job at the hotel, seeing that
- 1:28:41there's a problem and showing how his insanity increases is it's just unique.
- 1:28:47And it sticks with me.
- 1:28:49I saw this very young.
- 1:28:51I saw this at like six years old sci fi.
- 1:28:54And the first scene I saw was Jack Nicholson with the ax going up.
- 1:28:58And to see that first and continue watching, you think it's going
- 1:29:03to be like that the entire film.
- 1:29:04And it's not.
- 1:29:05There's a there's a good build and it's worth it.
- 1:29:08And that leads to my number one.
- 1:29:11John, you're going to get another shout out because this is my
- 1:29:13favorite slow burn and it's Cure.
- 1:29:17I'm like I've I've really thought about when I was thinking about this list,
- 1:29:24I was going to put The Shining first.
- 1:29:26And then I kept thinking about Cure and I'm like, that's such
- 1:29:28a slow burn on how it builds.
- 1:29:30And yeah, the scenes that occur where there's the unalivings happening are big.
- 1:29:36But it's that build up to the end that like it.
- 1:29:40don't want to say anything because it's like that's a movie that can't
- 1:29:44be spoiled and should be watched.
- 1:29:47Jon: Yeah
- 1:29:47Ryan: It just it still sticks with me.
- 1:29:50It's like it's something I can rewatch over and over again.
- 1:29:52But my top five slow burn.
- 1:29:55And I'm curious which
- 1:29:56Jon: Nice.
- 1:29:56Ryan: going with it.
- 1:29:58Paranormal podcasts.
- 1:30:02VHS.
- 1:30:04Jon: Nope.
- 1:30:05I'm going with old people
- 1:30:09Five more old people movies.
- 1:30:13Ryan: S- so grumpy old men?
- 1:30:16Grumpier old
- 1:30:17Jon: obviously.
- 1:30:18H- horror, obviously.
- 1:30:20my number five-- My number four and my number five definitely give
- 1:30:24off some of the undertone vibes.
- 1:30:27my number five stars Kate Hudson, and it's "The Skeleton Key" so a
- 1:30:33hospice nurse working at a Louisiana plantation caring for a dying
- 1:30:38old man discovers a hidden room.
- 1:30:40In the room, she discovers things used in the practice of hoodoo and comes
- 1:30:45to believe her patient is cursed.
- 1:30:48She sets out to save him, but will she end up needing to be saved too?
- 1:30:54Ryan: I feel like that movie was so under, like, it didn't
- 1:30:57get a lot of, like, love I felt
- 1:30:59Kearns: I think it's 'cause Kate Hudson wasn't getting a
- 1:31:00lot of love at that time too.
- 1:31:03Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:31:07my number four also has very strong undertone vibes.
- 1:31:11It's, written and directed by Bryan Bertino, who is probably best known
- 1:31:16for the first Strangers movie.
- 1:31:18and it's a movie called The Dark and the Wicked
- 1:31:23so siblings return to the family farm to care for their dying father.
- 1:31:30as his condition worsens, something sinister begins to spread throughout
- 1:31:34the house and, you know, it become… falls onto these two children to…
- 1:31:39Uh, not children, adult children to figure it out and help their dad
- 1:31:44transition to death more smoothly
- 1:31:49Kearns: Still a feel good movie
- 1:31:51Jon: Very, very, very feel good.
- 1:31:53Ryan: Are we talking about the first Strangers, like
- 1:31:55the very first or part one?
- 1:31:57Jon: yeah, he's the OG Strangers guy
- 1:31:59Ryan: right, that, that I can live with.
- 1:32:00Part one, as I admitted, I was the… Yeah, watch that episode.
- 1:32:05You,
- 1:32:05Jon: I think, yeah, I, if I remember right, he's Strangers and Strangers
- 1:32:09Pray at Night and not The Abominations That Came After my number three
- 1:32:16proves the theory that I can shoehorn George Romero into any top five.
- 1:32:21I'm not even gonna talk about the plot to this movie too much because
- 1:32:25I think the story around it is way more interesting than the, than
- 1:32:29talking about the plot would be.
- 1:32:31Number three is George A. Romero's The Amusement Park.
- 1:32:37Yeah, I see your, I see your face, and here, here's why you don't know this movie
- 1:32:43Ryan: sounds so much like the f- the fun house.
- 1:32:46Like
- 1:32:47Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:32:48But it's n- got nothing, almost nothing in common with The Funhouse.
- 1:32:52Uh, so the concept behind this Romero film, it's commissioned by the Lutheran
- 1:32:59Service Society of Western Pennsylvania to highlight the realities of elder abuse,
- 1:33:05and it takes this old guy to an amusement park where he is, you know, consistently
- 1:33:11discriminated against and ignored and, you know, j- just a horrible experience.
- 1:33:17so what Romero delivered is his typically bleak and edgy vision
- 1:33:23of what this would be like.
- 1:33:27And the Lutheran Society briefly screened it, and they used it for
- 1:33:32the purpose that they intended it for briefly, and then they pulled it.
- 1:33:38the widespread belief that's been shared in particularly by Romero's now late
- 1:33:43widow Christine is that, it was too much.
- 1:33:48It was too over the top.
- 1:33:50It was too Romero for a Lutheran society.
- 1:33:55Which, yeah, probably.
- 1:33:58and then it's lost.
- 1:34:01it's gone.
- 1:34:02Like, it, popped up every once in a while at, like, you know, weird movie festivals.
- 1:34:08Someone would have a, you know, a print of it, and they'd, they'd screen it.
- 1:34:12But it's really not until 2017, shortly before Romero's death, that someone sent
- 1:34:19him a, a physical copy of the movie.
- 1:34:23And then, you know, after his death, it gets the whole remaster, restore,
- 1:34:29re-release, physical release.
- 1:34:31It was a Shudder exclusive for a while, and it… So that's my number three.
- 1:34:36I think, like I said, I think the story behind the movie is cooler than
- 1:34:40a plot description would be for it.
- 1:34:43It, you know, it's, it's, it's, it's a cool idea that he, what
- 1:34:48Romero wound up doing all these weird things throughout the years
- 1:34:51Ryan: But that's what… He was a filmmaker at heart, and I feel
- 1:34:55Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:34:57Mm-hmm.
- 1:35:01Ryan: everything he does has meaning, and it's a deeper
- 1:35:03Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:35:04Ryan: that was his goal, and he, he nailed, he nailed anything he
- 1:35:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:35:08Mm-hmm.
- 1:35:09I, I mean, I mean, there, there's one, it's sort of my holy grail of Romero
- 1:35:13projects that I wanna get my hands on.
- 1:35:16It's an OJ documentary from way before, from, like, the '70s
- 1:35:25OJ, when OJ was America's hero
- 1:35:30Like before Hertz commercials, before The Naked Gun, before any of that.
- 1:35:36I want a physical copy of that.
- 1:35:39Ryan: Curious
- 1:35:40Jon: um, moving on with the top five that has now been hijacked
- 1:35:43by Romero, as it often is.
- 1:35:45my number two is Ghost Story
- 1:35:51Yeah.
- 1:35:52four older men share a s- a horrific secret over 50 years.
- 1:35:58When one of the men's sons dies on the eve of his wedding, it becomes
- 1:36:03apparent to them that their secret is maybe not so secret, and the
- 1:36:08past is coming back to haunt them.
- 1:36:10you get a cast of, like, these classic old-timey actors.
- 1:36:14You got Fred Astaire, John Houseman, Melvyn Douglas, and Douglas Fairbanks
- 1:36:18Jr., and you get some, some, like, up-and-comers thrown in there.
- 1:36:22Ken Olin is in there.
- 1:36:24there's a, an actress, like, who, whose name is lost at the
- 1:36:27moment, but who's in it, too.
- 1:36:29it's got some cool atmosphere.
- 1:36:31I, I like Ghost Story a lot.
- 1:36:33I don't like Ghost Story as much as my number one, though, which
- 1:36:38is a movie that we have covered all the way back in episode 23
- 1:36:45Brian, I see a blank look.
- 1:36:47I, I c- I'm surprised you haven't figured out what it is.
- 1:36:50My number one is Bubba Ho-Tep
- 1:36:53Ryan: Yes.
- 1:36:55Yes.
- 1:36:57Jon: Um,
- 1:36:58Kearns: do it
- 1:36:59Ryan: I was thinking of
- 1:36:59Jon: so if you, i-
- 1:37:00Ryan: I'm sorry.
- 1:37:01That was
- 1:37:01Jon: mm-hmm.
- 1:37:04If, if, if you want m- a deeper descriptions about it, go back
- 1:37:10to episode 23 and listen to it.
- 1:37:12But, you know, briefly, an aging Elvis maybe resides in a nursing home with
- 1:37:18a Black JFK as a mummy has taken up residence and is draining the life from
- 1:37:25the other inhabitants of the nursing home.
- 1:37:28The King and the president need to stop the mummy before it consumes
- 1:37:32enough to become a full-strength monster in this Don Coscarelli
- 1:37:38adaptation of a Joe Lansdale story.
- 1:37:42Ryan: That was a good
- 1:37:42Jon: That is my, that's my top five old people
- 1:37:49Kearns: That's a good top five.
- 1:37:50Nothing like a little geriatric top five to finish out the two on our episode
- 1:37:57Ryan: I'm shocked you didn't mention X.
- 1:38:00Jon: I mean, we just talked about X, so
- 1:38:03Kearns: be kind of pandering a little bit to a previous
- 1:38:05Jon: yeah.
- 1:38:06Kearns: to X. Go watch X right now.
- 1:38:08Comment, like and subscribe, like and subscribe.
- 1:38:11yeah.
- 1:38:12All right, everybody, we're gonna… We're probably gonna bug out
- 1:38:15because this has been a long one
- 1:38:16Ryan: Yeah, it is.
- 1:38:17Jon: Yeah.
- 1:38:17Well,
- 1:38:18Ryan: What?
- 1:38:21Jon: see ya
