- 0:00Yeah. So, yeah, my name's Karen. I do a thing called
- 0:03scot it' Sekruts. It's a solo synth crust project and yeah, releasing the
- 0:11new song Ratchet tomorrow today tomorrow pera beautiful mable I'm going to be honest with
- 0:17you, straight from the band. I'm not even going to try and pronounce
- 0:19that name because I'm going to fuck it up. So if anything that I
- 0:23refer to with you, I'm talking about the band. Okay, a lot
- 0:26of people go with sk because it's easier. All right, I'll probably fuck
- 0:30that up to mate. You haven't met me yet, Okay, so you're
- 0:34appropriate. In your latest single, Ratchet Buyer Heavy on Monday, April the
- 0:38fifteenth, bro So, tell us a bit about the song musically, Okay,
- 0:42so this just this song. Yeah, so it's probably the most sort
- 0:48of upbeat and poppy on my songs, which is not really saying much.
- 0:56Yeah, just it's all. It's all sense, heavily distorted sense, very
- 1:00different kinds industrial percussion and drum beats. And yeah, lyrically another song,
- 1:08yes, another song about my you know how fucking the head? I am
- 1:12basically sorry to laugh, mate, if you are really fucking ahead and says
- 1:19I can relate to it completely. Yeah, I'll look at it's such a
- 1:23good cathartist to just sort of get out there and scream about how fucked I
- 1:26am and have people go Yeah. I get into that after that, and
- 1:34it also comes with the creepy as fuck but also awesome as fuck music video.
- 1:38Mate, So run us through that. I'll trying to break it down
- 1:40and relate it back to here, but I've got confused in the first thirty
- 1:44seconds, so I thought it'd be easier if you explained it. Yeah.
- 1:47So this is It was made by David Zerub from Grim Reflections. I this
- 1:53is kind of about my fifth or sex music video. I had totally run
- 1:59it out. It's just visuals, it's not my things. I just I
- 2:02said to him, you know, you you do what you think is best.
- 2:06You direct this, and then you know, he asked for some sort
- 2:10of what direction. I said, well, I want I want it to
- 2:14be uncomfortable. I don't want anyone to watch it and kind of enjoy themselves.
- 2:17It's definitely not date music, so I don't want it to be a
- 2:21date video. And he definitely took that and around with it because it's really
- 2:27uncomfortable. It's great. I'm really happy with it. It's kind a great
- 2:30job. Yeah, it's a long day of shooting. It was a day
- 2:32that was like forty five degrees and we did like seven hours straight of shooting
- 2:38and I was nearly dead by the end, and which kind of works too,
- 2:43because you know he's edited. So yeah, there's bits where I'm just
- 2:46dropping sweat and just so close to death, and I think that that kind
- 2:52of works for the video, right, it does. Indeed, my friend
- 2:57ratchard Is follows on from your previous two singles, Joy and Second Life.
- 3:00So how does this song differ from the previous two. Well, they're all,
- 3:06yeah, they're all pretty different. Like Second Life is just is a
- 3:08straight up if you break it down, like everything I do is just sense
- 3:15and distortion and industrial drum beats. But Second Life, you could play that
- 3:21same song, those same chords and that same drum beat on guitars and drums
- 3:24and it's a punk song. It's pretty straight up punk song. Second Life.
- 3:30I had. I'm sorry that Second Life with Joey. I spent a
- 3:34lot of a lot of time does hammering on ship and breaking shit and recording
- 3:39it, and it's got a lot of like live percussion and bangs and crashes,
- 3:46and it's it's a lot more sort of traditional industrial, I guess in
- 3:52that way, whereas this one is, Yeah, I don't know, it's
- 3:55a kind of weird, straight up, got these sort of weird it's almost
- 4:00circusy kind of bouncy rhythms to it, which I don't know. I have
- 4:05no idea where that came from. A like I I programmed in a drum
- 4:10bet I went, oh, yeah, this is cool, started doing it,
- 4:12and then yeah, and put the bassline on it. There's big heavy
- 4:15bassline. And then when I started playing next layer of synth, it was
- 4:20like this has worked for really bounce was something really bouncy because it's the beat
- 4:26is almost not quite but almost like a fucking hip hop beat or something so
- 4:31and I think that's why it's sort of this sort of syncopated fucking top like
- 4:38synth line kind of works over the top of it. So it's it's different
- 4:41again. Musically, I mean, it all sounds like me, and it's
- 4:44all got me screaming and growling and whatever over the top, but it's it's
- 4:51it's got some kind of traditional song structure and sort of, but yeah,
- 4:57it's it's just it's a bit of a weird one. I like it a
- 4:59lot. It's lot of fun to play exact we would Be Men, and
- 5:02all three of them are taken from last year's album No Life Left. So
- 5:06would you say overall they're good sotnic representation of the album as a whole or
- 5:10are they just I reckon? It's actually yeah, it's a good mix.
- 5:17It shows the album as a whole quite well, you know, because I
- 5:21do I do everything from sort of weird and more sparse, kind of more
- 5:27industrial staff through to just straight up dbat raw synth and yeah, so those
- 5:32three songs I think spell it out well, like that's that's a good,
- 5:38good collection of songs. Cool, and the album must be pretty good,
- 5:42bro Like if you're still releasing singles from it, like the following year after
- 5:46it came out, yeah, well it's gone really well, Like it sold
- 5:53out, so I'm getting it repressed now. They're meant to be in the
- 5:57country, but they're kind of not. They're on a ship. So I
- 6:01released it, then toured Europe for about thirty odd gigs and then came back
- 6:06and I've kind of done a handful here and there, but not that much
- 6:11since I've been back. So from next weekend onwards, I start touring again.
- 6:15So it's just like, well, you know, I'm still really happy
- 6:18with it. I there's a lot of places I haven't played yet since I've
- 6:23released it, so it's like, yeah, okay, I'll do another single
- 6:26from this. I also recorded like a B side to it, digital B
- 6:31side, which is a re recording of a song off my first twelve bench
- 6:35which is long, long, long sold out. And yeah, just keep
- 6:42it going. I mean this would be the last single from it, and
- 6:45but yeah, I feel I feel pretty comfortable with an album. I like
- 6:50it a lot, and so yeah, I want to keep going with it.
- 6:54Now. You mentioned before when you were describing the music you call it
- 6:57industrial synth rust. Like I bread on that a bit for us. But
- 7:00what sort of influences come under that? Okay, so the stuff that come
- 7:06into industrial in the first place, I mean there's some older like old New
- 7:15Zealand stuff like skeptics, as well as you know, stuff like Nobarten and
- 7:20LOI barking this. That's the stuff that got me into the industrial sort of
- 7:25very harsh, very ugly, not dancing more noise orientated, and I like
- 7:32a lot of noise stuff how and so yeah, all my percussion is industrial
- 7:41sounds of different kinds, whether it's actually a piece of metal that's been bashed
- 7:46and then recorded, or whether it's me finding a sound and just fucking with
- 7:50it till it sounds ugly enough to use as a drama or as a percussion
- 7:54thing. Since well, everything I play at this point has been a handful
- 8:00of different synthesizes that I use. I mean, I run them through a
- 8:03shitload of distortion pedals and other weirdnesses. But it's still it's just me playing
- 8:11keys and then crust, yeah, crossbunk, which is what I've been playing
- 8:16in bands for the last fucking god knows how many years. Yeah, just
- 8:22playing dB crust for the last twenty something years, and probably in punk rock
- 8:26for about fifteen years before that. So it's just it's a mix of these
- 8:31things. It's where the industrial and the crosspunk and the punk rock all sort
- 8:37of meat together, and that's kind of what I make with it. Very
- 8:41cool now you touched on this bit before, Brian, but you've got a
- 8:43string of Aussie dates coming up, starting in Nambour and Queensland on April twentieth
- 8:48and you stagger through Victoria, New South Wales and South Austraya up to July
- 8:52the twentieth. So tell us more about that run of shows and then what
- 8:54people can expect from them. Okay, So yeah, up a Namble.
- 8:58So Nambour is up there. It's a shop called Bad Habit Records and the
- 9:03guy who does that also releases my music. That's that's bog. And so
- 9:09this that weekend, which is this coming weekend, is like a festival of
- 9:13Bad Habit Records and a festival of Bad Habits and so it's like three days
- 9:20of music which I'm fitting into. Then the following weekend, Yeah, I'm
- 9:24down in sort of regional Victoria in Castlemaine and eagle Hawks, just playing a
- 9:30couple of smaller towns. There's yeah, I went, I went and played
- 9:35in Melbourne a few weeks ago, and then I just wanted to go back
- 9:39and not do Melbourne at all and just do smaller towns. Then. Yeah,
- 9:43just trying to get getting out regional, playing in Maitland, playing in
- 9:48Port Macquarie and all these other places. I just sort of got around a
- 9:50lot more. Ever since gotaza Kros started. I've been doing shows everywhere.
- 9:56I've done everything. Yes, I've played pubes and class but I've also played
- 10:01house parties. I played under bridges, I've played forest parties. I've played
- 10:03anywhere anywhere that anyone's got a PA that I can plug into, I'll play.
- 10:09I've played video stores, I've you know, fucking literally just anywhere anywhere
- 10:13I can plug in. And so then just kind of continuing that. So,
- 10:18yeah, just keeping it busy up until July, and then yeah,
- 10:24in August through in August. Beginning September, I'm off to Japan for a
- 10:30few shows and then yeah, so that's that's where I'm at. Yea and
- 10:35What's reckon. People find tickets and find out more about the dates on this
- 10:37range or from bro mostly if you're like through my Instagram is probably the best
- 10:45way the schid has creates. Instagram is the best way to find out.
- 10:50For the most part, I don't I don't love pre sale tickets like I'm
- 10:56old. I like rocking up to the door of a venue and payn on
- 11:00the door and being a little bit more spontaneous rather than pre south. But
- 11:05I'm very vocal about when my shows are on, so you know, if
- 11:09people get on my in so then you know I'll let them know about it.
- 11:13Very good. All right, well, thanks very much for you.
- 11:16Chime and I made the single Ratchet is premiere bya heavy at seven am on
- 11:20Monday, April the fifteenth. Then just a cracker of his site made.
- 11:24I didn't quite know what was going on for a bit now myself, but
- 11:26did in the end. It came all together and it's fucking well done brother,
- 11:30so congratulations.
