- 0:37of our multiple part series on the apostles of Jesus.
- 1:02Last time we talked about John Zebedee and Judas Iscariot, two
- 1:07men who were so diametrically opposed, and you had both of
- 1:11them, the apostles. In this episode, we're going to
- 1:15take a look at Andrew and Simon Peter, the two brothers, and
- 1:19they too have very colorful lives and personalities.
- 1:22And I know that you'll enjoy learning and listening about
- 1:25them. I also want to give nod to a
- 1:29reader and someone who listens to the program.
- 1:32And, and as I've encouraged people who listen to these
- 1:34podcasts, if you have a question, if you have something
- 1:37in the Urantia book that draws your ire or you're curious and
- 1:41you want to ask, ask away. Our e-mail address is
- 1:45urantiabookradio@gmail.com. And this comes from a listener.
- 1:51And I won't, I won't divulge the identity, but it's an
- 1:54interesting question. And the listener says, what do
- 1:58our guardian angels do? It's a mystery to me.
- 2:02And after reading the paper on angels and listening to this
- 2:05podcast, what precise way do angels get involved in our
- 2:11lives? And he says that prior to the
- 2:14encountering the Urantia book, All my life I heard people
- 2:18attribute miracles to angels, such as enabling someone to
- 2:22survive a calamitous accident. But the UB seems to say that
- 2:26this would be a very rare occurrence.
- 2:30And it left the writer wondering what exactly do they do all with
- 2:35all the time that they have. So I thought I would take a stab
- 2:38at that because it is a good question.
- 2:40And after studying the Oranja book, it took me a long time to
- 2:44figure out what it is that they do.
- 2:46And we learn early on that certain groups of people are
- 2:52overseen by one group of, of, of angels.
- 2:57And then when you get down to the people that have the real
- 3:00light in them and they're in positions of social influence or
- 3:06impact, that those people when they, when, as it's described,
- 3:11there are certain people who, who breakthrough that spiritual
- 3:14level of being where they're, they're really acting almost
- 3:19parallel with their thought adjusters influence.
- 3:21And if you remember, the thought adjuster is the spirit fragment
- 3:25of God that resides in each one of us and the citadels of our
- 3:28minds. And it is that that spiritual
- 3:31influence that seeks to dominate the human personality in a very
- 3:37subtle way. And in doing so, for example, in
- 3:41the act of meditation, you're stealing the mind and you're and
- 3:45you're directing your mental currents, if you will, towards
- 3:50spiritual values. And this is the value of worship
- 3:53and prayer. So taking all of that into
- 3:57consideration, angels are social influencers.
- 4:00And every once in a while, when it's necessary or when they deem
- 4:04that it's important, they act as protectors.
- 4:07And they're also documentarians. They take a lot of notes.
- 4:11In fact, there were probably angels taking all kinds of notes
- 4:15as Jesus was living on earth, following certain people around,
- 4:19notating their expressions. And I know that perhaps I've
- 4:22gone on too long, but I think that's what they do.
- 4:25I think that's what their job is.
- 4:27They are ministers to us, and they're also collectors of
- 4:30information. Let's get to Andrew the first
- 4:35chosen. Let's talk about Andrew the
- 4:36Apostle as the Urantia revelators describe him in Paper
- 4:40139, Section 1. Andrew, chairman of the
- 4:44Apostolic Corps of the Kingdom, was born in Capernaum.
- 4:47He was the oldest child in a family of five, himself, his
- 4:51brother Simon and three sisters. His father, now dead, had been a
- 4:55partner of Zebedee in the fish drying business at Peseta, the
- 5:00fishing harbour of Capernaum. Capernaum.
- 5:04When he became an apostle, Andrew was unmarried, but he
- 5:08made his home with his married brother Simon Peter.
- 5:12Both were fishermen and partners of James and John, the sons of
- 5:16Zebedee. So now we have that connection.
- 5:19Now you could argue that perhaps that was done by design to bring
- 5:24these men together, Simon Peter and Andrew, James and John,
- 5:30perhaps some sort of predetermined destiny that they
- 5:33would all four go on. Imagine you meet somebody in a
- 5:37capacity, you become good friends with him, and then turns
- 5:40out later you and this person that you met 20 years ago go on
- 5:44to invent some, you know, incredible invention that
- 5:48changes the life of humanity. Anyway, back to the paper.
- 5:52Both were fishermen and partners of James and John, the sons of
- 5:57deputy of Zebedee. And in 1826, the year he was
- 6:01chosen as an apostle, Andrew was 33, a full year older than Jesus
- 6:06and the oldest of the apostles. He sprang from an excellent line
- 6:10of ancestors and was the ablest men of the 12, accepting
- 6:14oratory. He was the peer of his
- 6:17associates and almost every imaginable ability.
- 6:20Jesus never gave Andrew a nickname, a fraternal
- 6:23designation. But even as the apostle soon
- 6:26soon began to call Jesus master, they also designated Andrew by a
- 6:31term the equivalent of chief. Hey, chief, I've I've do you
- 6:37know chiefs in your life? Andrew was a good organizer, but
- 6:42a better administrator. He was one of the inner circle
- 6:45of the four apostles, but his appointment by Jesus as the head
- 6:49of the Apostolic group made it necessary for him to remain on
- 6:52duty with his brethren. While the other three enjoyed
- 6:56very close communion with the Master, to the very end, Andrew
- 7:01remained Dean of the Apostolic group.
- 7:05Although Andrew was never an effective preacher, he was an
- 7:08efficient personal worker, being the pioneer missionary of the
- 7:11Kingdom in that as the first chosen apostle, he immediately
- 7:16brought to Jesus his brother Simon, who was subsequently go
- 7:20on to become one of the greatest preachers of the Kingdom.
- 7:24Andrew was the chief supporter of Jesus's policy of utilizing
- 7:28the program of personal work as a means of training the 12 as
- 7:32messengers of the Kingdom. Whether Jesus privately taught
- 7:37the apostles or preached to the multitude, Andrew was usually
- 7:41conversant, conversant with what was going on, and he was an
- 7:46understanding executive and an efficient administrator.
- 7:49He rendered a prompt decision on every matter brought to his
- 7:53notice, unless he deemed the problem one beyond the domain of
- 7:57his authority, in which event he would take it straight to Jesus.
- 8:02Andrew and Peter were very unlike in character and
- 8:05temperament, but it must be recorded everlastingly to their
- 8:09credit that they got along together splendidly.
- 8:13Andrew was never jealous of Peter's oratorical ability.
- 8:17Not often will an older man of Andrew's type be observed
- 8:21exerting such a profound influence over a younger and
- 8:25talented brother. Andrew and Peter never seemed to
- 8:29be in the least jealous of each other's abilities or
- 8:33achievements. Late on the evening of the day
- 8:36of Pentecost, when largely through the energetic and
- 8:40inspiring preaching of Peter, 2000 souls were added to the
- 8:44Kingdom. Andrew said to his brother.
- 8:48I could not do that, but I am glad I have a brother who could.
- 8:52To which Peter replied, And but for your bringing me to the
- 8:56Master, and by your steadfastness keeping me with
- 8:59him, I should not have been here to do this.
- 9:03Andrew and Peter were the exceptions to the rule, proving
- 9:06that even brothers can live together peaceably and work
- 9:09together effectively. After Pentecost, Peter was
- 9:14famous, but it never irritated the older Andrew to spend the
- 9:18rest of his life being introduced as Simon Peter's
- 9:22brother. Of all the apostles, Andrew was
- 9:25the best judge of men. He knew that trouble was brewing
- 9:29in the heart of Judas Iscariot before, when none of the other
- 9:34suspected that anything was wrong with their treasurer, but
- 9:38he told none of them his fears. Andrew's great service to the
- 9:42Kingdom was in advising Peter, James, and John concerning the
- 9:47choice of the first missionaries who were sent out to proclaim
- 9:51the Gospel, and also in counseling these early leaders
- 9:55about the organization of the administrative affairs of the
- 9:59Kingdom. Andrew had a great gift for
- 10:03discovering the hidden resources and latent talents of young
- 10:07people. Very soon after Jesus's
- 10:11ascension on high, Andrew began the writing of a personal record
- 10:15of many of the sayings and doings of his departed Master.
- 10:20After Andrew's death, other copies of this private record
- 10:23were made and circulated freely among the early teachers of the
- 10:27Christian Church. These informal notes of Andrew's
- 10:31were subsequently edited, amended, altered and added to
- 10:36until they made-up a fairly consecutive narrative of the
- 10:40Master's life on earth. The last of these altered and
- 10:44amended copies was destroyed by fire at Alexandria about 100
- 10:50years after the original was written by the 1st chosen of the
- 10:5312 Apostles. Andrew was a man of clear
- 10:57insight, logical thought and firm decision, whose great
- 11:02strength of character consisted in his superb stability.
- 11:07His temperamental handicap was his lack of enthusiasm.
- 11:11He many times failed to encourage associates by
- 11:14judicious commendation, and this reticence to praise the worthy
- 11:19accomplishments of his friends grew out of his abhorrence of
- 11:23flattery and insincerity. Andrew was one of those all
- 11:28rounded, even tempered, self-made and successful men of
- 11:32modest affairs. Every one of the apostles loved
- 11:36Jesus, but it remains true that each of the 12 was drawn toward
- 11:40him because of some certain trait of personality which made
- 11:44a special appeal to the individual Apostle.
- 11:48Andrew admired Jesus because of his consistent sincerity, his
- 11:53unaffected dignity. When men once knew Jesus, they
- 11:57were possessed with the urge to share him with their friends.
- 12:01They really wanted all the world to know Him.
- 12:04When the later persecutions finally scattered the apostles
- 12:08from Jerusalem, Andrew journeyed through Armenia, Asia Minor and
- 12:13Macedonia, and after bringing many thousands into the Kingdom,
- 12:18he was finally apprehended and crucified in Petre in Akaya.
- 12:24It was 2 full days before this robust man expired on the cross,
- 12:29and throughout these tragic hours he continued effectively
- 12:33to proclaim the glad tidings of the salvation of the Kingdom of
- 12:38Heaven. And thus concludes the reference
- 12:44to the Apostle Andrew from Paper 139, section one in the Arantia
- 12:49Papers. We'll take a quick music
- 12:51interlude and then come back and we'll focus in on Simon Peter.
- 13:19Simon Peter is probably the most colorful apostle, and in a
- 13:24minute you're going to learn why as we delve into our section on
- 13:28the apostles from Paper 139. So the Oranget book writes that
- 13:32when Simon joined the apostles, he was 30 years old.
- 13:36He was married and had three children and lived in Beseda
- 13:40near Capernaum. His brother Andrew and his
- 13:44wife's mother lived with him. Both Peter and Andrew were
- 13:47Fisher partners of the of the sons of Zebedee.
- 13:53The Master had known Simon for some time before Andrew
- 13:56presented him as the second of the apostles.
- 14:00When Jesus gave Simon the name Peter, he did it with a smile.
- 14:04It was to be sort of a nickname. Simon was well known to all of
- 14:11his friends as an erratic and impulsive fellow.
- 14:15True, later on Jesus did attach a new and significant import to
- 14:20this lightly bestowed nickname. Simon Peter was a man of
- 14:25impulse, an optimist. He had grown up permitting
- 14:29himself freely to indulge strong feelings.
- 14:32He was constantly getting into difficulty be difficulties
- 14:36because he persisted in speaking without thinking.
- 14:40This sort of thoughtlessness also made incessant trouble for
- 14:45all of his friends and associates and was the cause of
- 14:48his receiving many mild rebukes from his master.
- 14:53The only reason Peter did not get into more trouble because of
- 14:57his thoughtless speaking was that he very early learned to
- 15:01talk over many of his plans and schemes with his brother Andrew
- 15:06before he ventured to make public proposals.
- 15:09Peter was a fluent speaker, eloquent and dramatic.
- 15:13He was also a natural and inspirational leader of men, a
- 15:18quick thinker but not a deep reasoner.
- 15:21He asked many questions, but more than all the apostles put
- 15:24together. And while the majority of these
- 15:27questions were good and relevant, many of them were
- 15:30thoughtless and foolish. Peter did not have a deep mind,
- 15:34but he knew his mind fairly well.
- 15:38He was therefore a man of quick decision and sudden action.
- 15:43While others talked in their astonishment at seeing Jesus on
- 15:47the beach, Peter jumped in and swam ashore to meet the Master.
- 15:53The one trait which Peter most admired in Jesus was his
- 15:57supernal tenderness. Peter never grew weary of
- 16:00contemplating Jesus's forbearance.
- 16:04He never forgot the lesson about forgiving the wrongdoer not only
- 16:087 times, but 70 times and seven. He thought much about these
- 16:13impressions of the Masters forgiving character during these
- 16:17dark and dismal days that immediately followed his
- 16:21thoughtless and unintended denial of Jesus.
- 16:24In the high priest courtyard, Simon Peter was distressingly
- 16:30vacillating. He would suddenly swing from 1
- 16:33extreme to the other. First he refused to let Jesus
- 16:38wash his feet, and then, on hearing the Master's reply,
- 16:42begged to be washed all over. But after all, Jesus knew that
- 16:47Peter's faults were of the head and not of the heart.
- 16:52He was one of the most inexplicable combinations of
- 16:55courage and cowardice that ever lived on earth.
- 16:59His great strength of character was loyalty, friendship.
- 17:04Peter really ain't truly loved Jesus.
- 17:06And yet, despite this towering strength of devotion, he was so
- 17:10unstable and inconstant that he permitted a servant girl to
- 17:16tease him into denying his Lord and master.
- 17:21Peter could not withstand persecution and any other form
- 17:25of direct assault, but he withered and shrank before
- 17:29ridicule. He was a brave soldier when
- 17:33facing a frontal attack, but he was a fear cringing coward when
- 17:38surprised with an assault from the rear.
- 17:42Peter was the first of Jesus's apostles to come forward to
- 17:46defend the work of Philip among the Samaritans and Paul among
- 17:50the Gentiles. Yet later on at Antioch he
- 17:54reversed himself when confronted by ridiculing Judaizers,
- 17:59temporarily withdrawing from the Gentiles, only to bring down
- 18:04upon his head the fearless denunciation of Paul.
- 18:09He was the first one of the apostles to make wholehearted
- 18:13confession of Jesus's combined humanity and divinity, and the
- 18:181st save Judas to deny him. Peter was not so much of A
- 18:23dreamer, but he disliked to descend from the clouds of
- 18:27ecstasy and the enthusiasm of dramatic indulgence to the plain
- 18:32and matter of fact world of reality.
- 18:36In following Jesus, literally and figuratively, he was either
- 18:40leading the procession or else trailing behind, following afar
- 18:44off. But he was the outstanding
- 18:47preacher of the of the 12. He did more than any other one
- 18:52man's aside from Paul to establish the Kingdom and send
- 18:56its messengers to the four corners of the earth in one
- 19:00generation. After his rash denials of the
- 19:04Master, he found himself, and with Andrew's sympathetic and
- 19:09understanding guidance, he again led the way back to the fishnets
- 19:14while the apostles tarried to find out what was to happen
- 19:17after the crucifixion. When he was fully assured that
- 19:21Jesus had forgiven him and knew he had been received back into
- 19:25the Master's fold, the fires of the Kingdom burned so brightly
- 19:30within his soul that he became a great and saving light to
- 19:34thousands who sat in darkness. After leaving Jerusalem and
- 19:40before Paul became the leading spirit among the Gentile
- 19:44Christian churches, Peter traveled extensively, visiting
- 19:48all the churches from Babylon to Corinth.
- 19:51He even visited and ministered to many of the churches which
- 19:55had been raised up by Paul. Although Peter and Paul differed
- 19:59much in temperament and education, even in theology,
- 20:03they work together harmoniously for the upbuilding of the
- 20:06churches during their later years.
- 20:10Something of Peter's style and teaching is shown in the sermons
- 20:14partially recorded by Luke and in the Gospel of Mark.
- 20:19His vigorous style was better shown in his letter known as the
- 20:22First Epistle of Peter. At least this was true before it
- 20:26was subsequently altered by a disciple of Paul.
- 20:31But Peter persisted in making the mistake of trying to
- 20:34convince the Jews that Jesus was, after all, really and truly
- 20:38the Jewish Messiah. Right up to the day of his
- 20:41death, Simon Peter continued to suffer confusion in his mind
- 20:46between the concepts of Jesus as the Jewish Messiah, Christ as as
- 20:50the world's Redeemer, and the Son of Man as the revelation of
- 20:54God, the loving Father of all mankind.
- 20:59Peter's wife was a very able woman.
- 21:01For years she labored acceptably as a member of the Women's
- 21:05Corps, and when Peter was driven out of Jerusalem, she
- 21:09accompanied him upon all his journeys to the churches, as
- 21:12well as on all of his missionary excursions.
- 21:16And the day her illustrious husband yielded up his life, she
- 21:20was thrown to the wild beasts in the arena at Rome.
- 21:25And so this man Peter, an intimate of Jesus, one of the
- 21:29inner circle, went forth from Jerusalem proclaiming the glad
- 21:33tidings of the Kingdom with power and glory until the
- 21:37fullness of his ministry had been accomplished.
- 21:40And he regarded himself as the recipient of high honors when
- 21:45his captors informed him that he must die as his master had died
- 21:49on the cross. And this was Simon Peter
- 21:54crucified. And thus was Simon Peter
- 21:59crucified in Rome. I, I, I have to say, I find you
- 22:06know these words very comforting.
- 22:09And it's quite a thing to imagine these men, these papers,
- 22:14these words really, really do speak to you.
- 22:17You feel like you know them. And whoever wrote these words
- 22:21certainly must have been Privy to such personal information.
- 22:26What a great story. And so we'll continue on.
- 22:29I think we're going to move through the other apostles as
- 22:32well. And I appreciate you taking got
- 22:35a lot of good feedback from listeners who say they'd rather
- 22:39enjoy hearing the story of these 12 men.
