- 0:30[SPEAKER_00]: How's it, Bill's fans, Lance Nelson here, president of built in Buffalo, rolling into double coverage tonight, to my right is Scott Cassen, the football extraordinary.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_00]: So how are we doing?
- 0:45[SPEAKER_00]: Scott.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_02]: Do I'm pretty well?
- 0:48[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if football is short and air is the best way to put it, but I will certainly take the compliments.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_00]: You are the triple coverage football, extraordinary as far as I'm concerned.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_02]: make it easier when there's only two of us have less competition tonight but yeah yeah our last football game of the season on Sunday and even though we may not love the teams who are in it and still football and we're going to watch and we're going to enjoy it so we got to we got to can't take this for granted you know we only got so many football games left in our lives so we can't we can't take them for granted especially when they're putting them all over the world not even in America
- 1:23[SPEAKER_00]: That's right.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_00]: And they got a little past the leg deal on Fandle.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll have a triple coverage parlay maybe coming to you before before the big game and hopefully I'm not the loser losing leg of that because I have had that propensity throughout my betting career to do that, but we'll see what we get.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so Brady is rounding out a nice staff here in Buffalo.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_00]: Gonna jump into that kind of get into sort of a baseline for this off season in the new 2026 season, even though Jim Leonard still thinks it's the current 25 season just because super handful hasn't been played yet, but
- 2:07[SPEAKER_00]: Scott, I guess, do you want to give any overall thoughts so far with the staff?
- 2:14[SPEAKER_00]: And then also, we just mentioned Jim Leonard's name, so jump into the former Bronco defensive past game coordinator, coming over to be the defensive coordinator in Buffalo here.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I like what Joe Brady's doing so far.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_02]: Good mixture of young and up-and-coming guys like himself and a good mixture of experience with guys like Karl Michael who will talk about.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, starting with Jim Leonard, Richard, his name listed as a candidate, I was like, I think the day after Brady got hired.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_02]: I was super excited.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_02]: The two I was most excited about were him and Jim Schwartz, like we talked about last week and Leonard,
- 2:49[SPEAKER_02]: I know he's young, but he was the DC it was constant for a few years and they had one of the best defenses in the country.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_02]: It's been the passing game defensive coordinator for the Broncos for the past two seasons and they have Patrick Sertan and Riley Moss and one of the best defenses in the league.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_02]: So he clearly knows what he's doing.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_02]: So we are going to see a little bit of a different scheme set up than what McDermott had.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_02]: McDermott liked to stay in that like the bill's
- 3:19[SPEAKER_02]: Um, with Jim Leonard, you're going to see a bit more three, four, four, or even a three, three, five when they go nickel and guys like Greg Russo and Javon Solomon and Michael Hoyt's going to feast in this because he's going to be able to line up anywhere but Greg Russo and Javon Sullivan, you know, the only two DMs we have officially on the roster coming back for next year.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_02]: are going to get to cut all line up in that outside line back or spot so there's still going to look like they're DMed but going to technically be a line back or probably rushing more with their from a two point stance.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_02]: I think for a guy like Gregor Sobe will be a really good thing.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_02]: He likes to blitz, which is something that McDermott didn't necessarily like to do as much.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_02]: And I feel like you can get pressure with four that's awesome, the problem was they could usually do that.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_02]: But when he was at Wisconsin,
- 4:09[SPEAKER_02]: of the stats here courtesy of Nick Sabato on XC, everything in 2021 is second year or second last year was constantly but 71% of the time and that was a bit of an outlier but they were right around 50-60% most of the other year.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_02]: So he's going to blitz, he's going to heat people up and it's going to be a bit more of a aggressive defense that we're used to with McDermott, less of a sit back and a zone and react and more of a like we're taking the flight to you attacking
- 4:38[SPEAKER_02]: I'm excited to see what he's got and there's going to be some personnel that they're going to have to bring in, pays out, move around.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_02]: He's not going to just say, hey, this is my system regardless of who we have.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_02]: They're going to work with it obviously, but it's going to be fun.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe a little bit more exciting to watch the bill's defense than it has been recently.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I did have to pull up always great work by South Capaccio, obviously, to put out the roster with different highlights and different categories where the players are.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_00]: I like to use that as a reference in our guy Matt Hallman also echoes a similar version of that for us.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: I built him Buffalo at times, but I see a lot of blue unrestricted free agents on sales sheet here and I'm like, these are a lot of old school bills guys that I don't see necessarily coming back anymore.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_00]: Jordan Philips back has come to an end and those sort of things we'll see.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_02]: That's why those guys are mad and they're on a job.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so, you know, we'll see where that goes.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_00]: Joey Bosa is a guy that's interesting to see as a UFA.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_00]: I assume they're going to let him walk, but we'll see how that plays out.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_00]: The personnel thing is what is most interesting to me throughout this hiring.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: I want to see like
- 5:51[SPEAKER_00]: change right away or are they actually going to do what they say?
- 5:56[SPEAKER_00]: Because they're saying certain things and then they're going to do what they feel is going to give them success right now.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_00]: They're saying, oh, we're going to adapt the the scheme and everything else to the personnel we have but they're going to be certain personnel.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_00]: There's guys people talking a lot about where
- 6:19[SPEAKER_00]: on a trade block better than on the defense, you know, I don't know, but it's hard to understand just yet because we haven't seen exactly what their plans are for each guy and we haven't really seen them or they haven't even really probably had a chance to really go through each guy yet to determine their role and responsibility.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_00]: So
- 6:43[SPEAKER_00]: interested to see how that happens with Jim Leonard.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_00]: I'm interested to see how quickly changes maybe made, how quickly guys maybe shipped out or brought in and the defense definitely looks to have the most turnover just because there's more free agents, there's more players that are free agents on the defense side of the ball than there are in offense.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_00]: So,
- 7:06[SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited, you know, Matt Milano is the guy's a free agent with the determine with him and what they like, they guys that are here.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_00]: And on offense, just a few free agents, you know, you got a backup quarterback.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_00]: You're fullback, Regigilium, a couple of receivers and cooks in Davis.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_00]: And then big ones, David Edwards, literally and figuratively.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_00]: Big ones, David Edwards and Connor McGovern are.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_00]: free agents.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_00]: So the offensive side Scott, I really like the higher of Pete Carmichael.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_00]: Do you have anything more to say on Jim Leonard before we move on?
- 7:42[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the only thing I will say just at Oliver because we mentioned them and people were like you said the rumors is yeah on the trade block.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think so.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_02]: I honestly think this could be a pretty good set up for at Oliver, especially if they can line him up like he's he's not a nose tackle.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_02]: It's not a one second.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_02]: He's a three technique by trade and if the bills have in this three four kind of kind of set up if they go get a true nose tackle.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_02]: think like a bill, Vince Will for a type, and when I think about that, I listen to an interview with him this morning.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_02]: Like if they get a true news tackle, that can kind of play in both egg apps and that all of a sudden for these guys in Buffalo.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, right.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_02]: Like then at all of her can watch and get a lot of
- 8:23[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I knew Jim that like, and Oliver can hit a lot of one on one match up so you can get set up with the guard or even out to the tackle and he can really shoot the big app or you know even run some stunts up there.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that Oliver is going to do really well in this system when the tackle is going to be out a little bit wider trying to get for that, you know, outside back or it could be coming off the edge.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_02]: The center is going to be pretty preoccupied and maybe even the guard with the nose tackle.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_02]: So what Oliver is going to get more one on one match up.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_02]: I think I think it's going to be a great setup for it.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like I said, I'm interested.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to claim to be a great projector of where players might go inside of someone's system that I haven't studied a ton because he hasn't been here and I've been looking at McDermott's defense for the last nine years and trying to,
- 9:12[SPEAKER_00]: make sure I had a handle on that.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_00]: I'll begin to transition now and looking at some more of Jim Leonard's stuff and looking forward to that throughout the off season.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_00]: Any, so the defense, you know, I mentioned, you know, there's quite a few safety's are going to be gone.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_00]: Jim Leonard spoke highly on cold bishop and liking him.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_00]: So they're
- 9:42[SPEAKER_00]: at safety, and those would likely be, you know, your two safety's, we'll see what they think of Jordan Hancock.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_00]: If you can go, the, you know, mooky Hawkins talked about Tron Johnson and where he fits if that, if safety in this scheme is a little bit more of a fit, but here's, you know, the guys, so there may be a guy that, uh, on the trader chop block versus, uh, in the defense that might be a better place for them in your mind.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_00]: Um,
- 10:06[SPEAKER_00]: You know, because we talked to Dorian Williams earlier in this past season, it's going to be interesting to see where he fits, does he now take on an even bigger role?
- 10:17[SPEAKER_00]: Can he do some of those things where he's that aggressive, blitzing type of guy, have downhill fast to the point of attack type of guy?
- 10:25[SPEAKER_00]: I think that fits his strength very well in my opinion.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but yeah, you know, we just drafted a bunch of young defensive lineman as well.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, we'll see, you know, land and jacks and TJ Sanders weighing Carter where those folks are fitting in.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't mention it because you already did and I've kind of saying this guy's praises throughout the season was really bummed when he got hurt.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_00]: But Michael Hoyt obviously is going to be a superstar in this defense is, you know, where he made his hay already and this type of a scheme.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_00]: So, uh, do you think?
- 10:57[SPEAKER_00]: how just real quick, how quickly do you think we could see healthy, Michael Hoyt though return?
- 11:02[SPEAKER_00]: Is it going to be really late next year or is it going to even be the following year before we really get to see him at full tilt?
- 11:11[SPEAKER_02]: I think he could be ready by the start of the season, like ready to play, it's going to take him a little bit to get back to normal Achilles and not like full year injuries anymore necessarily like and football is not basketball, but you see NBA guys coming back when they want to like just and take them might be back before the end of the season, because of the very last year, like I think he'll be back.
- 11:34[SPEAKER_02]: early in the season next year and who knows when he'll get the full alpha again, but I think we'll see him out there, September October and hopefully, you know, as the season ramps up, he finds his groove and then we get 100% Michael Hoyt by the playoff stretch because what we had for a game in a half of him was pretty good.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_00]: So we really excited about what he got and just, man, it was it was great for that game in a half and
- 12:02[SPEAKER_00]: went out right out the window real quick.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_00]: But all right.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_00]: Those are the points I wanted to hit on defense.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_00]: So do you have anything more you wanted to touch on before moving on here?
- 12:14[SPEAKER_02]: No, let's talk about the font side of the wall offense.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_00]: Pete Carmichael.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_00]: A Joe Brady guy, I would say, right?
- 12:23[SPEAKER_00]: So a guy that really took Joe Brady
- 12:30[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we heard the story about taking him to LSU, he took Joe Brady and realized that a very young age that that Brady was really smart and had a great mind for this game and I think this is the most important higher.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_00]: in the coaching staff.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I think bringing in a veteran experience to Pete Carmichael is a great hire because they've like he said, they've communicated ever since Joe Brady's left and I think they definitely have
- 13:08[SPEAKER_00]: a great relation.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_00]: I'm, when I talked to you last week about who they're going to bring in for OCD, what did we say?
- 13:15[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's got to be someone who can, Joe Brady can trust and seamlessly communicate with who could be up in the box.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'm assuming maybe Carmichael will be up in the box here, so he can get the view that Joe Brady had last year and communicate those things to him.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_00]: you know, the experience that he brings, I think is is really what makes this a slam dunk of a higher.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you hit it on the head right there.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_02]: The experience part.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_02]: He's not going to be calling plays.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_02]: Joe Brady is going to call plays.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_02]: He will be that kind of eye in the sky saying, hey, when he's seen from the 50,000 foot view, because you know, it's offered to see it down in the field.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, helping him get into the right stuff, but so it's going to be Brady calling plays, but
- 13:58[SPEAKER_02]: He's basically going to be in the same role he was in with Sean Pate.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_02]: He was the O.C.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_02]: for the Saints from O9 to 23 called the plays after Sean Pate left, and we can talk about that when it wasn't great, but look at the guys he was having, he was, call on those plays for, they weren't exactly world beaters, but and I like what Joe Brady said, that he's going to prepare like he is calling the plays each week so that if something does happen where Brady's not able to do that or needs to focus on something else, I think that that's a good
- 14:28[SPEAKER_00]: tidbit from Brady there on on Pete Carmichael and his work ethic and his preparation.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we're fun fact about karma.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_02]: We took over a St. sociology in O9 to know who he replaced and did you know before you looked at the outline?
- 14:42[SPEAKER_00]: I did not know before I looked at the outline.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_02]: Doug Murrow before the Doug Murrow took the head coaching job at Syracuse.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_02]: then came to the bills, that's where the bills over, and Carmichael took over, and they want to see Browoll and have great success with Sean Payton.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_02]: But a couple of things that he likes to do is play action under center, which is something I like to do as well.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm actually going to get at that.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and it's something that in years past they don't do was often I think I said it on our show was midway through this year Like when they were under center like 85% of the time it was rotten.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_02]: It was too predictable They did a bit more than that began, but I think we'll see more of it with Carmichael and also he likes throwing a running back Think back to some of the say it's running back.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_02]: They had when he was there Reggie Bush had some of his best seasons
- 15:27[SPEAKER_02]: no catch in the ball there.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_02]: Alvin Kamara for the last few years.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_02]: He caught the ball.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_02]: They have near more than some of their receivers.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_02]: So they're going to see James Cook involved in the passing game a lot more.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe some more tied Johnson because that's what he does best.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, I think it's awesome to have a guy with that experience.
- 15:42[SPEAKER_02]: doesn't have had coaching experience, but that's okay.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_02]: The great sounding Gord for Joe Brida, there's no situation.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_02]: Carmichael has intervened before.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_02]: So good sounding board for Joe Brida, a good veteran presence in that coaching room and that offensive room.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_02]: And yeah, I'm excited about it.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_02]: Also came from the Broncos, so pretty much coach in their whole staff.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know, I think that you talked about James Cook and I wanted to touch on that a
- 16:12[SPEAKER_00]: We talk about James Cook in the passing game, and there's a very widespread belief that James Cook should be good in the passing game, although he's never had a high volume at scene in there.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_00]: I think you pointed this out to Ben and I, one of the shows we did mid-year where I talked about the running back, getting more involved in wanting James Cook to be more involved as a receiver, and just that like the idea is there
- 16:41[SPEAKER_00]: could and would be good at that.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_00]: But he's he's shown flashes at times, but never actually had a prominent role.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_00]: I would say as a like he did catch some good balls at Georgia, right?
- 16:52[SPEAKER_00]: He did.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_00]: He has lots of these balls at in Buffalo, but he hasn't been a primary receiver necessarily out of the back field.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_00]: I would say as part of his career, would you agree with that?
- 17:05[SPEAKER_00]: I would
- 17:07[SPEAKER_00]: So he has the ability to basically, but there is an idea that he has the ability to come up here and make a bigger impact than what he has made so far on the NFL as a pass catcher.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, absolutely, and I think Carmichael is a guy who can help bring that out of them.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_02]: James cooks the kind of running back as we've seen the last two years, especially this year, you get the ball in his hands no matter what way you can't, like he's just electric when he has the football, I don't think the bills necessarily thought he'd be this one they drafted him, but now that teams are going to key on on the run a lot more than they may be having the past, because when you have Josh Allen and
- 17:46[SPEAKER_02]: Brady said it pretty well this week.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_02]: It's something I try to tell people, but no necessary Listen, those wide receiver streams help the run game a lot because you can't work the box Because we're gonna have one on one out there two on two out there.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_02]: We're gonna take that screen for 20 yards So into Anthony Romeo that
- 18:02[SPEAKER_02]: that's right.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_02]: But if teams are keen on James Cook in the box this year, maybe they get him the ball more creative ways like Albuquerque, Mara, because they're kind of similar play types in space.
- 18:14[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, I think that's an area of James Cook game that I think he could take to the next level next season.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_00]: the bill's best player with the ball in his hands, per Scott Cassen.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_02]: So like that, they get the only problem is there's a lot of times where the ball becomes not in his hands.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_02]: So we gotta work on that.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, if only that did not get dislodged as as much in crucial situations and no situations ever.
- 18:42[SPEAKER_00]: I always say this.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_00]: There's no situation that's a good time to turn them all over, but James Cook seems to find the absolute worst of the worst times to make those mistakes.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_00]: That's frustrating for sure, but you know, otherwise, going to be a star in this offense, and I'm excited to see what Pete Carmichael can bring from his Sean Peyton tree down here to buff or up here to Buffalo and help Joe Brady along with putting this offense together, because look, the last thing on the offense that I have really is,
- 19:20[SPEAKER_00]: This we talked about some of the issues towards the end of the season and often times talked more about the offense being a problem than the defense here with Buffalo.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_00]: So the reason why I was a little bit or I was very upset with the whole move and the way this all went down after firing McDermott is they didn't change what I thought had been one of the bigger issues with the team and they kept Brandon me and they kept Joe Brady now.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_00]: And maybe Carmichael can be an influence that helps sort of change things enough to where we could see a little bit more that this offense can be elevated.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_00]: Now they say, Joe said in his press conference, Pete said, you know, it all valves year to year, no offense is going to be the same year to year anyway.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_00]: So the year to year change is going to be there.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_00]: But how big of a change can we really expect with this staff being what it is on offense?
- 20:20[SPEAKER_02]: I think the bigger changes, let's Joe Carmichael coming and excuse me, and more Sean McDermott going out.
- 20:26[SPEAKER_02]: I think Sean McDermott had his hands and fingerprints all over this offense more than we think.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_02]: You could tell he liked to play the ball control style, run the ball, time of possession, which is good.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_02]: You want to be able to run the ball.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_02]: If you can run the ball, there's nothing keen to do to stop you as we saw in the
- 20:46[SPEAKER_02]: Well, like this year, in the past couple years when the bill's defense isn't a top 10 defense, like it was in the past, when there's less possessions, it takes out a lot of that variance you're going to get less turnover teams are like less good stuff can happen less bad stuff can happen, so it's kind of less opportunity for the bills to take advantage of that and I think that this year that may have been kind of not going to say they're downfall with that hurt them.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_02]: It's just because their defense wasn't getting any stops, the bill's offense wasn't getting any stops.
- 21:15[SPEAKER_02]: And they were just kind of going score for score.
- 21:18[SPEAKER_02]: Or if the God forbid the bill's punted twice in the first half, like they could be down, like the bangles gave down 217.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_02]: And they didn't really do anything bad.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_02]: They're down 2110.
- 21:28[SPEAKER_02]: They just punted once and the other team didn't.
- 21:31[SPEAKER_02]: So I think we're going to see a bit more aggression.
- 21:35[SPEAKER_02]: Brady already kind of planted that seed of, hey, well, I'd like to have more downhill passing, but you got to do it with the personnel you have kind of maybe prominent being like, hey, like
- 21:46[SPEAKER_02]: I made a work last year.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_02]: I know I love why receiver screen and how they serve a purpose.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_02]: I want to throw them as much as we did.
- 21:51[SPEAKER_02]: Like we want to push them all down field.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_02]: That's something I don't think McDermott liked with Dable.
- 21:57[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think he liked with Thorcey.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, Brady was kind of doing what the head coach wanted, which is what you do.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_02]: So, obviously, it's still going to be Joe Brady's offense.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_02]: It's not going to be
- 22:07[SPEAKER_02]: crazy different, but I do think he's going to be more aggressive, just because the overall mindset of the team is now shifting from a defensive mindset to an offensive mindset, just based on who's run on the show.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_00]: And there's, you know, there's going to have to be more intentional change really on this offense in my opinion, because like I mentioned, there's only six guys exiting on the offensive side from last year, and then there's some restricted free agents as well, two of them being, you know, two unrestricted free agents being offensive linemen and two restricted offensive linemen.
- 22:45[SPEAKER_00]: And then you have cooks and Davis wide receivers who are free agents, Reggie Gilliam, how much are they going to want to keep a full back in this offense.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_00]: Now is that something that's going to change.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_00]: And then, you know, we may be looking at a new potentially new backup quarterback here, or they can recite Mitch, obviously, but yeah, there's going to have to be more intentional change than to the personnel here.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_00]: Curtis Samuels got to go.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I just think that's a given.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_00]: I think this was the year that we all thought this was going to be the out if he didn't absolutely shine, and he hasn't come close to even glimmer yet, so I think that you have
- 23:32[SPEAKER_00]: cut that.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_00]: You have to make that change right away.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_00]: And hopefully, you know, they're going to have a tough decision to see what Josh Palmer can really do if he can stay healthy, if they think he can be more than what we saw this year.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_00]: And you're going to have to add, hopefully, add maybe a big time playmaker there for Josh Allen.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_00]: I hope that Josh Allen's not going to get there and Roger's treatment in his career here where they don't ever go out and get him the big time.
- 24:00[SPEAKER_00]: wide receiver, but we'll see, and this is the year that they could potentially do it, but we'll see how that all works out as we move forward in the off-season.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to be following that closely.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_00]: uh... special teams coordinator Jeff Rogers hired here from the cardinals Arizona i uh... he does have like uh... game i guess a random emergency game of head coaching experience under his belt there and uh... uh... funny circumstance but it shows that he could maybe be ready in any circumstance things arise uh... shows some adaptability there and he talked about
- 24:39[SPEAKER_00]: in his press conference he kind of talked about how he's built for the special teams coordinator role that's sort of what works in clicks in his brain and the way he can kind of have his hands in the whole team but also you know it's a special lot more of a specialized role not necessarily as the head coach.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_00]: So you know I like what he had to say.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_00]: today and from whatever you can glean from a press conference but what are your thoughts Jeff Rodgers special teams coordinator for the bills he preached a lot of ball security which I think any coach would but how many pokes did he take there at McCollardman and others to make sure that they realized that coming in here you got to have ball security first and foremost.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I like it.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_02]: He's a guy who has a lot of experience, like you mentioned.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_02]: He's been the special teams coordinator for feels like half the league, but was recently the cardinal since 2018 and also their assistant head coach.
- 25:36[SPEAKER_02]: So So some leadership there.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_02]: Cardinal special teams have been solid over the years.
- 25:41[SPEAKER_02]: Special teams are at their best kind of like free throws like you don't want people to notice when you miss your free throws You want people to notice when you make you want people to notice when you have some it's like you don't want to notice special team Unless it's a big kick return or force bomb or something like you just you know I'm sure if you guys so you can't talk to me about free throws and making them No, they're tanking for Gavin McKenna which so a lot of you that his draft stock politics
- 26:11[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, like special teams, you don't want to notice him.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_02]: I feel like the Cardinals for the most part didn't.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_02]: He's coached some solid kickers over the years as well.
- 26:17[SPEAKER_02]: He coached Prater when he was in Denver at his peak.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, he's a good guy again with a lot of experience.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_02]: He's going to have a lot of experience in that room.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_02]: And like special teams has been a big area for improvement with the bills.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_02]: Or they had Ray Davis's past season first team all pro kick returner.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_02]: But
- 26:35[SPEAKER_02]: other than that, you know, it feels like they've always had some mistakes, they've never been able to find a real consistent punk returner, like throw and shake your back there to basically fair catch it or a cod break tape, who was a liability at literally everything else.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, he's a guy who'll have good stable special teams, nothing crazy, nothing too flashy, but you know, just want him, you don't want to notice special teams and I think we'll have that with him.
- 27:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 27:01[SPEAKER_00]: I've excited to see him get to work as well.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be one of those things where going to be locked in in training camp and things like that to get a first glimpse of these guys for me.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_00]: on how the practice is structured and how different guys are working and what positions guys are working in.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm excited to see that part of it and we'll keep hearing and seeing more as the off-season progresses.
- 27:30[SPEAKER_00]: Personnel decisions are going to be the first thing up that we get to break down and start an understanding of where they feel with guys.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_00]: All right, guys, if you haven't done so yet, please like and share this episode, like on Facebook, share with your friends.

- 28:23[SPEAKER_00]: Just took Theo there, not I think this past weekend.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_00]: So good time.
- 28:28[SPEAKER_00]: Always at the Lancaster indoor bounce house.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_00]: And
- 28:32[SPEAKER_00]: it's wing night tonight at the big tree in.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_00]: So if you're having eaten yet, go out there to the big tree in.
- 28:37[SPEAKER_00]: They are the official game day spot of built in Buffalo and the triple coverage podcast will be there every single game day home and most away games as well.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_00]: I'll be there in the house getting everyone's thoughts and half time and things like that throughout next season.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_00]: So really appreciate the big tree and coming on as a partner and everything they do.
- 28:57[SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited to
- 29:02[SPEAKER_00]: All right, let's go into just the rest of the staff quickly.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think we need to go in depth on any one guy here.
- 29:10[SPEAKER_00]: Stop, but we mentioned Pat Mayer, the O-Line Coach was hired.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_00]: John Edgar Ruggu, that's tongue twister there.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_00]: And I wish I just like it spelled.
- 29:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_00]: Bobby April, Jay, Valai, Beau Hardigree, and Drew Terrell as Widershovers Coach came through.
- 29:30[SPEAKER_00]: So go through a couple of these guys for us and what you know of them and just your overall thoughts on what they're going to bring here.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_00]: We can start if you want to just start from the top here inside linebacker coach and go down.
- 29:45[SPEAKER_02]: go through, just give a couple of fun facts about each one.
- 29:47[SPEAKER_02]: So read the depth.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_02]: I think yeah, it's right.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_02]: Our inside linebacker inside linebacker's coach was that with the giants for the last few seasons before that he was actually here with McDermott was an assistant linebacker's coach from 2017 to 2020.
- 30:04[SPEAKER_02]: So he's back in the building.
- 30:07[SPEAKER_02]: These are amount of guys actually still still around from from those days in the linebacker room.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_02]: I guess Milano would be the only one who probably won't be here next year.
- 30:15[SPEAKER_02]: But these amount of guys still around.
- 30:17[SPEAKER_02]: So cool to have him come back and he'll know the area, he'll know some stuff.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_02]: So nice for him to come back.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_02]: And the giant defense wasn't terrible this past season and seems like a guy that that people people like.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_02]: I don't pretend to know all of the
- 30:31[SPEAKER_02]: linebacker coaches through the league, but sounded like he was liked outside linebacker coach.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_02]: Also a guy who was here before Bobby April was here in 1516.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_02]: So right before the McDermott staff took over under Rex Ryan was at Wisconsin with Jim Leonard for four years.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_02]: So they have worked together, they'll know each other really well.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_02]: And especially outside linebackers in a three, four kind of scheme are going to be really important.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_02]: So those two be in on the same page
- 31:00[SPEAKER_02]: will be a good thing.
- 31:02[SPEAKER_02]: And he was at Stanford last season, Andrew Lock the GM there, another another good enough.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_02]: Oh guys, cornerback coach, J.V.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_02]: Lye was the Oklahoma, Oklahoma, Oklahoma, Oklahoma, cornerback coach is past season.
- 31:17[SPEAKER_02]: They had an awesome defense there.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_02]: They made a playoff.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_02]: They lost the Alabama, which ironically is where the lie was before.
- 31:24[SPEAKER_02]: And he was the DV coach that I underdixed.
- 31:26[SPEAKER_02]: And if you know how an Xavin coach, he was basically the DV coach.
- 31:30[SPEAKER_02]: So learned a lot from one of the best DV coaches may be of all time.
- 31:34[SPEAKER_02]: So we'll be.
- 31:35[SPEAKER_02]: pretty cool for him to bring that knowledge here, uh, bow hard degree, you could be coach with Titan's QV coach this past season, working with Cam Ward, uh, seem to do a pretty good job.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_02]: Cam Ward made a lot of strides, another guy who's a big name in the corner about coaching world, people seem to like, and then Drew Terrell wasn't
- 31:54[SPEAKER_02]: Cardinals passing in coordinator and wide receiver coach.
- 31:57[SPEAKER_02]: So because of that, we're obviously getting a trade for Marvin Harris and Jr. And you know, all the other receivers because they'll definitely want to follow the Michael Wilson coordinator there.
- 32:07[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, Michael Wilson.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's just how just that's just how it works.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, those are the new guys.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_02]: Bunch of guys are staying around.
- 32:15[SPEAKER_02]: I don't have to read all their names because that's not great radio But a lot of guys are staying around pretty much any position for you.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_02]: But I didn't mention that guy is staying so Good.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, see if like a good starting one of the honest there that are retaining that you do like over the other I thought DJ Meng is being retained is gonna be pretty good for this group Kyle Shermer as well where the two you know, yeah, I really thought they were good
- 32:40[SPEAKER_02]: That's it, Rob Borges, the Titans coach.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_02]: The bills have arguably the best Titans room in the NFL.
- 32:46[SPEAKER_02]: Next season, it will be solid as well.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_02]: Whether Knox stays goes, however he is here next year, which I think he will be.
- 32:53[SPEAKER_02]: Concaid's made awesome strides under him.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_02]: Knox has been great under him, Jackson Hall's had an awesome rookie season.
- 33:00[SPEAKER_02]: So keeping him in the building, I think, is big as well, especially for the kind of offense that we know where he wants to run.
- 33:06[SPEAKER_00]: Right on, yeah, he could convince maybe King K to go get that Nefix, so he's not dealing with the same PCL injury year after year, but we'll see if that wrong can be corrected throughout this fight.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that might be, so.
- 33:22[SPEAKER_02]: PCL said that the injury is generally don't need it.
- 33:25[SPEAKER_02]: And sometimes it's more harm than good to get it.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_02]: So I don't, I don't know.
- 33:30[SPEAKER_02]: I know he's missed time in two seasons in a row.
- 33:32[SPEAKER_02]: But it's one of those things that I don't know if surgically repairing it would like be an end all be all fixed like it may just give him more problems because now his needs have been cut open.
- 33:43[SPEAKER_02]: That's at least the thought process behind it like yeah hopefully get a voice out and not to ever want to have yeah.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you can avoid surgery don't want to have surgery as a guy who's had surgeries it never feels the same.
- 33:57[SPEAKER_00]: I've got a hernia here that I'm just letting, letting, letting work is not hurt me any.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_00]: Wow, it just, it's, it's, it's all right.
- 34:05[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't, doesn't bother anything.
- 34:07[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll let it go until it does bother something and then you got to get cut open.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_00]: So there you go.
- 34:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm not overly familiar yet with a lot of these coaches, you know, bow heart agree.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_00]: I think, you know, worked with a lot of young QBs more recently.
- 34:25[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm excited to see what he can bring to Josh Allen's game in the quarterback room.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_00]: And we'll see what they do at the back of quarterback spot to add to that quarterback room.
- 34:35[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, Javel I, I think, was very highly
- 34:39[SPEAKER_00]: uh... touted and and uh... a good candidate bills so coming in with okay we're trying to like match the offer to keep him there
- 34:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, great leadership from Hannibal, good young mind.
- 34:50[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that he's going to be a great ad for this staff.
- 34:54[SPEAKER_00]: So still a few positions to fill, but the bills have done a great job of laying foundation here for this season.
- 35:04[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what this episode goes about.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_00]: Laying the foundation, creating a baseline and getting this team ready to write the ship, so to speak.
- 35:13[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see if we can get over the hump and go from there.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_00]: And I feel awards coming up, the proble just happened.
- 35:21[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't even see what happened in the proble because the proble is worthless.
- 35:25[SPEAKER_00]: Now, how is it like, I may, I guess, even care.
- 35:30[SPEAKER_00]: But is it angering a bit to see like how they've let the proble sort of slip away and just become this meaningless, not even televised event of, you know, on a Tuesday night or something?
- 35:44[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, as far as it was to watch the North Sanders play flag football with Joe Flacco.
- 35:50[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, like the pro will.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_02]: I think they should go back to having to be after the season, put it in Hawaii, put it in a place the guys actually want to go to because.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_02]: Like who doesn't want to take a week vacation go to Hawaii drink my ties by the poor and.
- 36:08[SPEAKER_02]: You can play a, you know, even if the game wasn't great, like at least all the guys went because it's like, hey, I get to take my family to Hawaii for a week and the NFL's paying for it like they've done it in Disney.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_02]: I think this year wasn't San Francisco where the Super Bowl is like, I don't know anybody who watched it.
- 36:24[SPEAKER_02]: I don't even see like highlights on Twitter like normally you like I don't know if I saw a single thing that happened and I if anybody watched it like
- 36:34[SPEAKER_02]: I feel, I'm sorry, I'm sorry you didn't have anything better to do than the honest feel.
- 36:39[SPEAKER_02]: Like I don't, I don't know.
- 36:40[SPEAKER_02]: And the NFL awards tonight, I think Stafford with the MVP, I think he should.
- 36:46[SPEAKER_02]: Again, I don't know, I probably won't tune into those either, I'll just see who won everything.
- 36:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I've got to think about this here.
- 36:56[SPEAKER_02]: I think they do like team spin ass.
- 36:58[SPEAKER_02]: So they still do the individual competitions.
- 37:00[SPEAKER_02]: I think they do like team ones like they do dodge ball.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_02]: They'll do some like weird linemen thing.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_02]: Awesome.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_00]: There are about young playing dodge ball, but I know last year I believe where they actually did like a tug of war thing and it was semi.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_00]: I think I at least watched it, but this just.
- 37:17[SPEAKER_02]: Well, and they used to do, they do like the quarterback throwing challenge, you know, the receivers do the, like, little obstacle course thing like that was kind of cool.
- 37:25[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I don't even know if they do those anymore.
- 37:28[SPEAKER_01]: Again, like the guys you go isn't worth watching them do that.
- 37:34[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe let's see, oh, host stadium is done being renovated.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_02]: They'll move her back.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm not really going to pay too much attention to the NFL words either and I don't really have a dog and I don't think that Josh Allen's necessarily going to win MVP.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know that they even really should, but cool that he's a finalist and around there, we'll see who they should be announcing the protector of the year tonight, right?
- 38:03[SPEAKER_00]: Is that part of the whole Shindig?
- 38:04[SPEAKER_02]: So, yeah, yeah, so that was the first time, first time award.
- 38:09[SPEAKER_02]: Dian Doc is nominated for Walter Payton Man of the Year.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_02]: Good for him.
- 38:12[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'll read the list to guys who want stuff.
- 38:18[SPEAKER_00]: We can have Ben's good at reading depth charts and lists of things.
- 38:22[SPEAKER_00]: So next week, when Ben's back, he can read the list for us, because he's very, very skilled at that.
- 38:27[SPEAKER_00]: So just last thing that we didn't mention yet, we can talk about a little bit.
- 38:33[SPEAKER_00]: There's not too much there, but the bills and sabers are moving on a little bit from WGR as like the official flagship.
- 38:40[SPEAKER_00]: radio station kind of opens up things for other outlets to cover the team and carry game Syria, many sort of feeling or thoughts on that.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_02]: So not living in Buffalo.
- 38:53[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't grow up listening to WGR like a lot of people did.
- 38:58[SPEAKER_02]: So I don't I don't really know who these guys are much other than you know hearing some clips every now and again like the being or answer or whatever.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_02]: right.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_02]: So I don't probably don't care about this as much as others.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_02]: Make sense that they're putting everything.
- 39:16[SPEAKER_02]: Everything's going like the bills app, right?
- 39:17[SPEAKER_02]: That's the plan.
- 39:19[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, like who doesn't have that app now?
- 39:23[SPEAKER_02]: Like it's probably easier than the radio because we've got our service, you have it on your phone, anywhere you are.
- 39:29[SPEAKER_02]: It is kind of a guess of bummer from like the traditional
- 39:34[SPEAKER_02]: Like, there won't be like that local flagship radio station.
- 39:37[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure WGR will still exist, but maybe not quite in the same way.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, I don't know.
- 39:43[SPEAKER_02]: I get doesn't, doesn't matter to me again.
- 39:45[SPEAKER_02]: Probably mostly because I don't live there.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_02]: But I have an 80 year old man.
- 39:49[SPEAKER_00]: I love listening to the radio.
- 39:50[SPEAKER_00]: I still listen to baseball games on the radio.
- 39:52[SPEAKER_02]: And baseball games on the radio are elite.
- 39:55[SPEAKER_02]: I will set any other sports, pretty mental baseball games on the radio.
- 39:59[SPEAKER_02]: Give me one more game with John Sterling.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_00]: I know man, every year I listen to the Yankees since John Sterling's left and I just am like, I hate my life now because I used to love listening to John Sterling do Yankees do the film there.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_00]: And these guys, they bought it.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_02]: I like Dave Sims.
- 40:18[SPEAKER_00]: the guy they just brought in last year.
- 40:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the year before though, when they were just trying to comment together, I think he left in the middle.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_00]: And you had like Ricky Ricardo coming on, and it's like, geez, guys, what are we doing?
- 40:30[SPEAKER_02]: So that was, yeah, but now Sterling and Susan Waldron made an up there with Vince Colley for best baseball announcing duo.
- 40:39[SPEAKER_02]: Just one more
- 40:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I hope that WGR does stay around.
- 40:44[SPEAKER_00]: I'm an open-minded person, whether you agree or like anybody's take.
- 40:49[SPEAKER_00]: I just enjoy listening to other people talk about the bills and whatever their opinions are, whether I agree with them or not.
- 40:58[SPEAKER_00]: I just enjoy that and it's peaceful for me to ride in the car and listen.
- 41:06[SPEAKER_00]: And so also they do take a lot of fan calls and things like that
- 41:10[SPEAKER_00]: kind of get your pulse of what the fans are thinking, although the fans that do tend to call in have different times have interesting thoughts and opinions, and that's all good.
- 41:23[SPEAKER_00]: So, but from an open mind standpoint, from just a pure, yeah, you know, maybe a traditionalist and whatnot, I did
- 41:30[SPEAKER_00]: enjoy the radio side of things, but we'll see.
- 41:33[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's still going to exist in some form, just going to be different.
- 41:36[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm at all the whole game, so hopefully they still play the radio broadcast in the bathroom.
- 41:42[SPEAKER_00]: And that's really the only time I consume it during that period.
- 41:49[SPEAKER_00]: That does it for us a little bit of a quicker show tonight with just two guys and the offseason shows are going to be a little more compact so that we're not sitting here for an hour hour and a half in season shows are easier to do that because obviously we got a lot more to break down but here we're going to get a topic or two and hammer that home and get you out of here quick and easy.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_00]: So if you're on the audio and you've stayed this long, we really appreciate you listening.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_00]: Go ahead and like and share that audio.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_00]: platform with your choice as well.
- 42:18[SPEAKER_00]: We're on Apple podcasts, Spotify, wherever you get your podcasts.
- 42:23[SPEAKER_00]: Appreciate it again to our partners, a big tree in Lancaster in Norbouns House.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_00]: Wind Nuts Buffalo, 7-1, Slicks Barbershop, Bill Bills.
