- 0:00Speaker 1: The following program is produced by the tech Talk Radio
- 0:03Speaker 1: Network and Yes, another tech Talk radio. I'm Andy Taylor
- 0:08Speaker 1: and I'm justin lem Me. Welcome. Hopefully Sean will be
- 0:11Speaker 1: joining us a little later on in the show. He's
- 0:13Speaker 1: got some child issues going on right now, time for
- 0:18Speaker 1: bad Yeah. Anyway, Well, it's good to see you. I
- 0:22Speaker 1: know you've been pretty busy. I was surprised to learn
- 0:25Speaker 1: that you are already getting ready to open up water
- 0:28Speaker 1: World again. I mean, go through that whole process, right,
- 0:32Speaker 1: let's see. Yeah, it's about forty yeah, forty days until
- 0:36Speaker 1: we open. So we've had a very warm winter. We've
- 0:40Speaker 1: not had hardly, I don't think maybe I think we
- 0:43Speaker 1: got maybe a quarter inch of snow the entire winter. Really, Yeah,
- 0:47Speaker 1: that's weird. It is very weird. Yes, it's very weird.
- 0:50Speaker 1: We're underwater restrictions right now. It's not going to affect
- 0:54Speaker 1: water World because we get our water from a different place.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I think it's like a lake, so and then we
- 1:00Speaker 1: filter all the water out and everything to make it
- 1:02Speaker 1: so we're not underwater. Reschurch is a water world. But
- 1:06Speaker 1: with the warm weather, we thought, hey, this is great
- 1:09Speaker 1: for the construction project, you know, because like they can
- 1:11Speaker 1: just keep working day after day after day. It's coming
- 1:15Speaker 1: down to it. I gotta say, we got forty days
- 1:17Speaker 1: to open. It's coming along, right. I just I'm I'm
- 1:22Speaker 1: not quite fully convinced that it's going to be ready
- 1:26Speaker 1: by opening day. But you know, we'll see, we'll see.
- 1:29Speaker 1: I mean, they've they've made a lot of progress in
- 1:31Speaker 1: the last couple of weeks. So I'm getting who actually
- 1:35Speaker 1: traveled to Denver. They've heard about water World and they
- 1:38Speaker 1: want to check it out. Oh, absolutely, yeah. I mean
- 1:41Speaker 1: mostly from the surrounding states. So we get you know,
- 1:43Speaker 1: people from Nebraska, Wyoming, Oklahoma, Utah, Montana, New Mexico, you know,
- 1:50Speaker 1: play me summat in Texas. I'm sure that we get
- 1:55Speaker 1: people from other states too. I just I've never met
- 1:57Speaker 1: those people, but I have met people from states that
- 2:00Speaker 1: I just mentioned. They come up and I usually when
- 2:03Speaker 1: I meet them, I'm usually a guest myself. You know,
- 2:06Speaker 1: I'm not I'm not there as an employee. I'm there
- 2:08Speaker 1: as a guest and I'm there to have followed my
- 2:11Speaker 1: family and We'll just be standing in line for a
- 2:13Speaker 1: slide and I'm just like, Hey, where you guys from?
- 2:15Speaker 1: And They're like, oh, New Mexico and like, oh cool,
- 2:19Speaker 1: and then the guy you know, it's it's happened time
- 2:22Speaker 1: and time again, I swear. But I'll just start talking
- 2:24Speaker 1: to somebody in line and they'll say, what your voice
- 2:27Speaker 1: is familiar? Ahha, And I'm like, yeah, because I'm the
- 2:30Speaker 1: dude that you're hearing right now. What do you mean
- 2:32Speaker 1: you're the voice I'm hearing. I'm like, I'm the guy
- 2:35Speaker 1: that's saying all those ride announcements and stuff. And so
- 2:38Speaker 1: they'll stop and they'll listen and they'll hear it in
- 2:40Speaker 1: the background. They'll hear welcome to storm. Keep your hands
- 2:43Speaker 1: and feet inside the vehicle at all times. Water depth
- 2:47Speaker 1: is one point five feet. And they'll turn around to
- 2:50Speaker 1: me and I'll repeat it back to them and they're like,
- 2:51Speaker 1: oh my god, you're the guy. You know. It's so funny,
- 2:55Speaker 1: you know, because I'm just like, yeah, I'm also an employee.
- 2:58Speaker 1: I'm just here as a guest today. It's so sur
- 3:00Speaker 1: prizes me because Arizona, where you know, we're we get
- 3:03Speaker 1: pretty hot here. We have yeah yeah you think. Yeah,
- 3:07Speaker 1: we had a water park and I had all the
- 3:10Speaker 1: water evaporated exactly. I don't know why we close when
- 3:14Speaker 1: I lived in Palm Springs. We had one called Oasis
- 3:17Speaker 1: water Park and that was really cool, but it wasn't
- 3:22Speaker 1: like what you guys have water World. I mean it
- 3:24Speaker 1: was basically, you know, you climb, you climb, you take
- 3:27Speaker 1: the steps up, and you come down the funnel and
- 3:29Speaker 1: you get in the water. That Lazy River. You would
- 3:31Speaker 1: go around on the Lazy River and it was it
- 3:33Speaker 1: was nice. But you guys water World has made it
- 3:36Speaker 1: like enormous, like you could do I mean stuff there. Right,
- 3:39Speaker 1: It's it's it's like it's like it's like the Disneyland
- 3:42Speaker 1: of water parks, right, I mean it's it's massive. I
- 3:45Speaker 1: mean we got what seventy seventy five acres. Wow, that's amazing. Yeah,
- 3:52Speaker 1: so cool. So, I mean it's it's a massive water park.
- 3:54Speaker 1: But now let me let me understand this real quick.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Are you telling me that in Tucson after all these years,
- 4:00Speaker 1: I mean I haven't lived in Tucson for so many years. Yeah,
- 4:02Speaker 1: but after all these years, Tucson and even Phoenix they
- 4:05Speaker 1: don't have a water park. I think so. I think
- 4:08Speaker 1: Phoenix does. It's that Wolf Lodge they had great Wolf Lodge.
- 4:13Speaker 1: That doesn't count. That's indoors. It's kind of an indoor thing. Great.
- 4:17Speaker 1: I think that's the only one. There might be another
- 4:20Speaker 1: one somewhere, but I know the one in Tucson left
- 4:23Speaker 1: and it's kind of a shame that it did. But wow,
- 4:27Speaker 1: that was that was pretty cool to have as a part. No, puny,
- 4:31Speaker 1: where was that one in Tucson? It was right off
- 4:34Speaker 1: Tangerine and the Een, so it's out towards the northwest side.
- 4:38Speaker 1: This was after I left then, huh, because at that
- 4:41Speaker 1: point Tangerine and I ten was nothing there. Well, still
- 4:44Speaker 1: kind of there's a couple of gas stations and stuff growing.
- 4:48Speaker 1: They got a shopping center off Twin Peaks. But yeah, no,
- 4:53Speaker 1: we could use a really good like attraction like that.
- 4:57Speaker 1: That would be pretty awesome. I mean, you guys are
- 4:59Speaker 1: so hot down there. I mean I would feel like
- 5:01Speaker 1: you should, but there may be logistical challenges to that
- 5:05Speaker 1: because the fact that you are so hot. Yeah, and
- 5:08Speaker 1: then you know you don't want the kids to get sunburned,
- 5:10Speaker 1: you know, sunburn. But also the water. It is constant
- 5:13Speaker 1: water evaporation. I mean, I mean, I'm not joking, like
- 5:17Speaker 1: your water is just going to evaporate faster than you
- 5:19Speaker 1: can replenish it. I get stuck on the slide going
- 5:22Speaker 1: down out of water. A good not a good image. Yeah. Yeah,
- 5:26Speaker 1: I'm wondering the technicalities though of you know, putting together
- 5:31Speaker 1: an opening like that. Is there a lot of stuff
- 5:33Speaker 1: that technically has to happen, like on your end, Absolutely, yeah,
- 5:38Speaker 1: I would think it would. Well. I mean, we got
- 5:40Speaker 1: we got turnstiles. We've got twelve see let's say twelve turnstiles.
- 5:46Speaker 1: We've also have fourteen early entry wireless kiosks that allow
- 5:54Speaker 1: people to like, they can come into the park, but
- 5:57Speaker 1: then they can't actually enter the main part of the
- 5:59Speaker 1: park unless they scan their badge at a wireless kiosk
- 6:03Speaker 1: that allows them access to the rest of it. So yeah,
- 6:06Speaker 1: we have to coordinate putting computers into H one of
- 6:10Speaker 1: the turnstiles, and then we have to coordinate getting the
- 6:13Speaker 1: Wi Fi operational for all of the wireless kiosks, all
- 6:19Speaker 1: of the food stalls, the vendors. We have to coordinate
- 6:22Speaker 1: getting all of the digital signage, which we use a
- 6:27Speaker 1: company called bright Sign, which bright Sign is actually also
- 6:31Speaker 1: known as Roku. So Roku designed bright Sign and they
- 6:35Speaker 1: spun off the companies to be Roku for TV and
- 6:38Speaker 1: then bright sign for digital signage, So we use bright
- 6:41Speaker 1: sign for digital signage, and then we use screen feed
- 6:45Speaker 1: to feed those digital players like our content. So like,
- 6:50Speaker 1: for instance, we have a restaurant inside the park, not
- 6:56Speaker 1: really a restaurant but more like a you know, just
- 6:59Speaker 1: a stand under foodstall. But when they walk in there,
- 7:03Speaker 1: they see all the menu on a TV screen. Oh cool,
- 7:07Speaker 1: And what this allows us to do? And if we
- 7:10Speaker 1: wanted to, we're not doing it now, but if we
- 7:12Speaker 1: wanted to, we could do dynamic pricing, so we could
- 7:16Speaker 1: we could change based on the demand. So there's a
- 7:19Speaker 1: ton of people coming to this one place, we could
- 7:23Speaker 1: we could up the price instantly for certain items, which
- 7:27Speaker 1: again people are gonna be like, oh my god, you
- 7:29Speaker 1: know that's that's horrible you do that, but you know
- 7:31Speaker 1: that's this the way things go. Or well, if you
- 7:34Speaker 1: think about Walmart is doing that now with their digital price,
- 7:37Speaker 1: everybody's doing it. So everybody does it because let's face it,
- 7:40Speaker 1: you know this Walmart over here is selling out on
- 7:43Speaker 1: this item. It's selling out over here, and we've got
- 7:45Speaker 1: it for this price. Then they they may digitally raise
- 7:48Speaker 1: the price that can or or or vice versa. They
- 7:51Speaker 1: may lower the price when somebody's got more of it,
- 7:55Speaker 1: and then raise the price when they've got less of it.
- 7:57Speaker 1: But what also allows us to do is if we
- 8:00Speaker 1: a lot of an item, let's say we sell out
- 8:01Speaker 1: of the hot dogs or whatever, we can immediately go
- 8:06Speaker 1: and just put a line through that hot dog the
- 8:09Speaker 1: item on the menu board and say, you know what
- 8:12Speaker 1: sold out. Yeah. So that way people don't come up
- 8:14Speaker 1: and say can I get a hot dog? And the
- 8:16Speaker 1: person'll be like, oh, you know, because again we're allowing
- 8:20Speaker 1: These foodstalls are run by, you know, the high school
- 8:24Speaker 1: age kids, and a lot of these kids they're not
- 8:26Speaker 1: full time staff. They don't they don't have a lot
- 8:28Speaker 1: of experience. They don't also understand how to keep up
- 8:33Speaker 1: to date by the minute of what we have. So
- 8:37Speaker 1: a lot of times somebody orders something that like the
- 8:40Speaker 1: let's say the manager rolls through and says, hey, guys,
- 8:43Speaker 1: we're out of hot dogs. Five minutes later, you've got seven,
- 8:48Speaker 1: you know, teenagers walking up to the manager going do
- 8:50Speaker 1: you have any more hoot dogs? Yeah? Like okay, no,
- 8:52Speaker 1: So I mean that's just the way it is. So
- 8:55Speaker 1: it allows us to put a line through the menu items.
- 8:57Speaker 1: So that way customers don't try to order something that's
- 9:00Speaker 1: already out. So we have to coordinate all that. We
- 9:03Speaker 1: have to coordinate the Wi Fi, we have to coordinate
- 9:05Speaker 1: the digital signage. We have to coordinate the turnstiles and
- 9:09Speaker 1: the guest WiFi for guest experiences. Yeah, so there's a lot.
- 9:13Speaker 1: There's a lot to do, and we got forty days
- 9:15Speaker 1: before we open. It's funny because we're talking about digital signage.
- 9:19Speaker 1: I have seen a lot of restaurants that used to
- 9:22Speaker 1: use the traditional wooden sign. You know, there's one of
- 9:26Speaker 1: my here called Nicos that you know, you go into
- 9:28Speaker 1: it be a woulden sign and then they'd have the
- 9:30Speaker 1: price up there and the whole bit. But now a
- 9:33Speaker 1: lot of these restaurants are doing exactly that because they're
- 9:36Speaker 1: don't going all digital signs. Because think about it. If
- 9:39Speaker 1: you're a business and you could connect your laptop and
- 9:44Speaker 1: you've got the information there and they've got a program.
- 9:47Speaker 1: This guy at the Nicos who switched to digital signage.
- 9:50Speaker 1: But tell me, yeah, there's a program. They can go
- 9:52Speaker 1: in there, they can adjust it, they could change if
- 9:54Speaker 1: they decide that when you get rid of them, and
- 9:56Speaker 1: you will item that all they have to do is
- 9:58Speaker 1: put another one in that could change the pricing. So
- 10:01Speaker 1: if somebody suddenly says, you know, uh, gosh, I really
- 10:06Speaker 1: loved your your Chariso burritos, can you bring those back?
- 10:10Speaker 1: And they decide, okay, bringing back, Well, they can add
- 10:12Speaker 1: it to the menu without having to have a new
- 10:15Speaker 1: menu board added up or something else. Ad. It just
- 10:17Speaker 1: looks so much better that digital science. The guy here
- 10:21Speaker 1: at at Green Valley Automotive was out of show recently
- 10:25Speaker 1: and he had signage up that again digital, because it's
- 10:30Speaker 1: easier to change, a lot of businesses should really be
- 10:33Speaker 1: looking into that. Well, you know, think about you know,
- 10:36Speaker 1: let's say this is probably gosh, it's probably going on
- 10:39Speaker 1: ten years now, but you remember, you remember that very
- 10:42Speaker 1: first time that you walked into like a McDonald's or
- 10:45Speaker 1: a Burger King, and all of a sudden their menus
- 10:48Speaker 1: were all digital and they were on a TV screen
- 10:50Speaker 1: instead of it being like a standard you know, menu board.
- 10:54Speaker 1: You know, I'm old, so I can't stand going to
- 10:57Speaker 1: that kiosk in ordering I want to order. You know now,
- 11:00Speaker 1: I'm not about the kiosk. I'm talking about up above
- 11:03Speaker 1: the counter behind the people, right, it used to be
- 11:06Speaker 1: a static menu board. Oh, yeah, yeah, and now it's
- 11:08Speaker 1: all TVs. What gets me is that they throw advertisements up,
- 11:12Speaker 1: so like you're looking at Okay, I want a number tube,
- 11:17Speaker 1: but what does the number two come with? Oh gosh
- 11:20Speaker 1: darn it. Now it's an advertisement that takes over the
- 11:23Speaker 1: whole screen. And then you've got to stand there like
- 11:25Speaker 1: an idiot for like thirty seconds until the advertisement gets
- 11:29Speaker 1: over and be like, yeah, okay, I want the number
- 11:32Speaker 1: two with bacon. Yeah, okay, thanks. I wonder how many
- 11:35Speaker 1: people listening to this are saying, bring back the good
- 11:37Speaker 1: old days. But yet this, this digital digital era has
- 11:41Speaker 1: changed a lot again for us. I mean, you know,
- 11:45Speaker 1: it's made it easier. I think, well that too. Another
- 11:48Speaker 1: part of this, this this digital signage for us, is
- 11:52Speaker 1: that we can then put advertising on our screens to
- 11:57Speaker 1: direct customers to other locations in the park. For instance,
- 12:00Speaker 1: we have a we have a barbecue joint in the
- 12:03Speaker 1: park that a lot of people don't know about, So
- 12:05Speaker 1: we can put a small little ad in the bottom
- 12:08Speaker 1: corner of the screen showing like an animated plate of barbecue.
- 12:15Speaker 1: And so then they come up looking for a hot
- 12:17Speaker 1: dog and they see this advertisement for barbecue, which obviously
- 12:21Speaker 1: is a higher price point, more profit, and they're like
- 12:26Speaker 1: barbecue and then they walk over to the barbecue joint,
- 12:30Speaker 1: right exactly. You know, people you think, okay, like me,
- 12:33Speaker 1: I'm talking about being old and not wanting to go
- 12:35Speaker 1: to the kiosk and have to I don't like to
- 12:38Speaker 1: have to do that, but it can be more appealing
- 12:41Speaker 1: for people as well. You look at the Sphere in
- 12:45Speaker 1: Las Vegas or Sphere yeah, Sphere yea. The Sphere in
- 12:48Speaker 1: Las Vegas. I mean that has become enormous number one
- 12:52Speaker 1: because they could do so much with number one, attracting
- 12:56Speaker 1: people from the outside, but also inside the venue they
- 13:01Speaker 1: can see something that they've never seen before a live
- 13:04Speaker 1: show I have heard. I was actually just watching a
- 13:08Speaker 1: YouTube video about the Sphere and it was talking about
- 13:12Speaker 1: the design of the Sphere and the concept of it
- 13:15Speaker 1: and everything about it, and what they were saying was
- 13:19Speaker 1: everybody that goes there is just completely enamored with it,
- 13:24Speaker 1: like just it's the most amazing experience in their lifetime. However,
- 13:30Speaker 1: the Sphere is hemorrhaging money. I can't see how that
- 13:35Speaker 1: could be though. When they're making they charge so much
- 13:37Speaker 1: for tickets, the cost the cost ballooned over three times
- 13:41Speaker 1: the original amount of what it was designed to be.
- 13:45Speaker 1: So I think it was like, I don't know, I'm
- 13:47Speaker 1: throwing a number like one billion ended up being three
- 13:50Speaker 1: billion to build. Oh and no matter what they do,
- 13:54Speaker 1: all these concerts, all these shows, even though they charge
- 13:58Speaker 1: a lot, they're still hemorrhaging money. They are so much
- 14:02Speaker 1: in debt. And it's the it's the guy that owns it,
- 14:06Speaker 1: is the guy that owns the New York Knicks and
- 14:09Speaker 1: the Rangers. And he's actually gonna build He thinks, I
- 14:14Speaker 1: don't know what his thought process is, but he thinks
- 14:18Speaker 1: that by building more of these spheres, he's going to
- 14:21Speaker 1: get his money back. So there already plans to build
- 14:23Speaker 1: one in Dubai, Tokyo, Japan, and I can't remember the
- 14:30Speaker 1: other place. There was a third one that they talked
- 14:32Speaker 1: about building. But anyway, there you mentioned Tokyo. Have you
- 14:37Speaker 1: and I know you're gonna be going to Japan next month?
- 14:40Speaker 1: Have you Have you ever been to Tokyo Disney Oh,
- 14:43Speaker 1: of course multiple times. How Now, I worked at the
- 14:47Speaker 1: original Disneyland back in the California Anaheim, California. I'm wondering
- 14:52Speaker 1: how different was it the experience in Tokyo Disneyland than
- 14:56Speaker 1: the one in Anaheim. So I let's see, let me
- 15:01Speaker 1: just recap a little bit. I originally went to Disney
- 15:04Speaker 1: for the very first time in my life at ten
- 15:06Speaker 1: years old. I went to Disney World in Florida. I
- 15:10Speaker 1: don't remember a lot about that, so I don't remember
- 15:12Speaker 1: all the details. The next Disney property I went to
- 15:16Speaker 1: was Tokyo Disney. When I was in the Navy, Oh wow.
- 15:19Speaker 1: And then after I got out of the Navy, when
- 15:21Speaker 1: I moved to San Diego, I went to Disneyland. I
- 15:25Speaker 1: have to say, Tokyo Disney by far is the best
- 15:30Speaker 1: Disney really wow. It's the experience is so much. I mean,
- 15:35Speaker 1: if you think about what Disney stands for and what
- 15:37Speaker 1: Disney's trying to portray in their park, Tokyo Disney fits
- 15:43Speaker 1: it to a tee. Everything is so perfectly clean.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Everywhere you go.
- 15:50Speaker 1: The cast members are so polite. And then I go
- 15:56Speaker 1: to disney Land and there's cigarette butts, spit, dirty diapers, yeah,
- 16:03Speaker 1: I mean, and then the cast members couldn't give two
- 16:07Speaker 1: yeah things about you, right, just like it doesn't fit
- 16:11Speaker 1: the mold of what Disney is supposed to be. So like,
- 16:14Speaker 1: for me Disney Tokyo. Disney is so much more perfect
- 16:19Speaker 1: than Disneyland. I remember going to Disneyland as a kid
- 16:24Speaker 1: when we first got here to the United States and
- 16:27Speaker 1: in the sixties, and I remember you you could go
- 16:30Speaker 1: to Disneyland for a day and it didn't cost you
- 16:34Speaker 1: anything to get in if you want to really, Yeah,
- 16:38Speaker 1: you could get in. Oh they did it by per ride. Yeah,
- 16:41Speaker 1: you got tickets. You had to eat tickets and all this,
- 16:43Speaker 1: and then you would go on the rides and it
- 16:46Speaker 1: was cool. It was fun. You know, you would eat
- 16:48Speaker 1: at the restaurants and my parents still dropped some money.
- 16:50Speaker 1: But I mean, it wasn't that bad. But I hear
- 16:54Speaker 1: people telling me stories now, and I'll be honest, I'm
- 16:58Speaker 1: a big fan of Disney and all that, and now
- 17:01Speaker 1: it just seems so inaccessible for the middle class person
- 17:04Speaker 1: to be able to go and afford to get in.
- 17:07Speaker 1: People tell me, oh, no, it's cashed about two grand,
- 17:09Speaker 1: maybe three grand, take it to Disneyland, stay in a
- 17:12Speaker 1: hotel and do all that stuff. But I guess if
- 17:15Speaker 1: you consider the cost of the hotel and stuff. Yeah,
- 17:18Speaker 1: I mean when we went to Disneyland, me and Mysa,
- 17:20Speaker 1: this is you know, when we were living in San Diego,
- 17:22Speaker 1: we stayed right outside of the park and it was
- 17:26Speaker 1: within walking distance, and I think we paid maybe two
- 17:30Speaker 1: hundred for a night over at that hotel. Yeah, and
- 17:33Speaker 1: then it was like about one hundred bucks each to
- 17:35Speaker 1: get in. Yeah, and then after that, I mean it
- 17:38Speaker 1: wasn't So I don't understand where people are talking about
- 17:40Speaker 1: two grand I mean, if they're staying at like the
- 17:43Speaker 1: Four Seasons and they're renting a Mercedes Mayboch to take
- 17:47Speaker 1: them to the park, yeah, okay, then fine, yeah, three
- 17:49Speaker 1: thousand dollars. But dude, come on, no, it's not that expensive.
- 17:53Speaker 1: They talk about it for the whole weekend. The food,
- 17:55Speaker 1: food is very expensive. Parking you have to pay. Okay.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Are you talking about a family of like sixty Okay,
- 18:00Speaker 1: because then then yeah, family of two even No, it's
- 18:05Speaker 1: not that expensive. Well I hope not, but I hear
- 18:09Speaker 1: stories about that, and it's been a while since I've
- 18:11Speaker 1: been there. Was one nice thing about working there. You
- 18:14Speaker 1: could just go whenever you wanted, which is kind of cool. Yeah,
- 18:16Speaker 1: just dressed it with Mickey Mouse and walked through the
- 18:18Speaker 1: front gate. That's I never tried that, though. My ride
- 18:22Speaker 1: was the submarine that was you know what I did
- 18:25Speaker 1: so and I didn't. I wasn't the voice of Disneyland.
- 18:28Speaker 1: A buddy of mine later became the voice for a while,
- 18:31Speaker 1: Mark Farrell. Oh, I worked with in the nightclub business
- 18:35Speaker 1: and he was really good at it, and sometimes he
- 18:37Speaker 1: would do the voice you talk about like the park announcements,
- 18:39Speaker 1: park announcements, Yeah, you know, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls,
- 18:42Speaker 1: that whole bit. Like ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls.
- 18:47Speaker 1: The technology has changed a lot to help, i know,
- 18:50Speaker 1: make the experience better at Disneyland. And you know, not's
- 18:54Speaker 1: very farm and you know, there's been some that haven't survived,
- 18:57Speaker 1: but it's good to know, like water World is surviving.
- 19:00Speaker 1: People are coming out for a seasonal park that is great,
- 19:03Speaker 1: but you do stuff off season two like golf do
- 19:05Speaker 1: they do they do that or they open that as
- 19:07Speaker 1: well well. I mean we have properties that operate year round,
- 19:11Speaker 1: but the prime primary income stream for the Highland Hills
- 19:16Speaker 1: parks in reg district is the summer. Right. You know,
- 19:18Speaker 1: you got water World, who's the biggest, the golf course,
- 19:23Speaker 1: the mini golf raceway park, you got those, and then
- 19:29Speaker 1: you got like the the you know, the sports Center,
- 19:32Speaker 1: which is an indoor you know, like sports center, gymnasium
- 19:35Speaker 1: type of thing. You've also got, you know, the rec
- 19:37Speaker 1: programs like baseball, softball and things like that. And then
- 19:40Speaker 1: you got the fitness center, and then we got our
- 19:42Speaker 1: ice center as well, and the ice centers more primarily
- 19:46Speaker 1: geared towards winter, which I personally, I just don't understand that. Like,
- 19:50Speaker 1: I you know, Denver gets up to the nineties, nineties
- 19:53Speaker 1: one hundred degrees during the summer. Who would not want
- 19:56Speaker 1: to go into an indoor ice rink in the summer?
- 20:00Speaker 1: I mean, you would think that would be the biggest
- 20:02Speaker 1: time of the year, like, hey, let's go cool off
- 20:04Speaker 1: in the ice center. Yeah, you know, but no, no,
- 20:07Speaker 1: it doesn't work that way. No, it's hockey season, you know.
- 20:10Speaker 1: And it's It's funny though, but a lot of these attractions,
- 20:14Speaker 1: like water World, like Disneyland, like some of these other parks,
- 20:17Speaker 1: they're finding that they need to go beyond what they
- 20:20Speaker 1: have offered in the past, which some are doing. Theaters
- 20:24Speaker 1: are doing the same thing, and I think we if
- 20:26Speaker 1: she Matt had mentioned there is a theater that is
- 20:29Speaker 1: in Denver that makes it up an entire experience you
- 20:33Speaker 1: can go to see a movie, you could get good food,
- 20:36Speaker 1: you could sit in lounge seats, you could play at Alamo. Yeah,
- 20:39Speaker 1: Alamo Theater. We have one year. We have one here
- 20:44Speaker 1: that has done really well. It's called Roadhouse Cinemas, and
- 20:47Speaker 1: they've now opened like a gaming center right next to
- 20:51Speaker 1: the cinema for the entire experience. And they're gonna be
- 20:54Speaker 1: opening one actually in Green Valley, Saboudita, the former Desert
- 21:00Speaker 1: Sky Cinemas. It hasn't nothing's happened yet, but apparently so
- 21:03Speaker 1: they bring the idea of you go to a movie,
- 21:05Speaker 1: but afterwards you go play foosball, or you know, you
- 21:09Speaker 1: could shoot baskets, or you could play arcade games or
- 21:12Speaker 1: pretty cool carnival type games and make it a fun experience.
- 21:16Speaker 1: I think that's what a lot of people are looking for.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Is beyond just that idea of just going and sitting
- 21:21Speaker 1: in a movie, we can do it at home. Now.
- 21:24Speaker 1: You know the thing about the Alamo draft House. I
- 21:27Speaker 1: think that's the one you're talking about, Alimo draft House,
- 21:29Speaker 1: and it is nationwide. It's not super big. There was
- 21:33Speaker 1: a recent news story about the Almo draft House and
- 21:36Speaker 1: I experienced this firsthand before I even heard about this
- 21:38Speaker 1: new story. So last weekend I took my son to
- 21:43Speaker 1: the new Super Mario Galaxy movie. Oh Cool, and we
- 21:47Speaker 1: went to the same Alamo Draft House we've been to
- 21:50Speaker 1: multiple times. And the way the Alamo Draft House works,
- 21:54Speaker 1: it's like it's like a regular movie theater, except there's
- 21:58Speaker 1: no concession stand. Like you walk in, you go sit
- 22:02Speaker 1: in your seat, and then your seat has a menu,
- 22:06Speaker 1: and then you pull at the menu. There's a little
- 22:08Speaker 1: bit of a light underneath. It's got reclining like powered
- 22:12Speaker 1: reclining seats. You pull it the menu, you look at
- 22:15Speaker 1: what you want. The server comes by and says, what
- 22:18Speaker 1: can I get you? And you're like, okay, I'll take
- 22:20Speaker 1: a beer, nachos, popcorn and Eminem's right, and they're like okay,
- 22:25Speaker 1: and then they leave. They come back, they deliver it
- 22:27Speaker 1: right to your seat and then you get to enjoy
- 22:29Speaker 1: the movie. However, with the Super Mario Galaxy movie, we
- 22:33Speaker 1: got to our seats. The server comes up and says,
- 22:38Speaker 1: and I'm not joking in the way I say this.
- 22:41Speaker 1: The server comes up and goes, welcome to Alamo Draft House.
- 22:46Speaker 1: We've got a new system. Now. It's a QR code.
- 22:50Speaker 1: You just scan the QR code, place your order, and
- 22:55Speaker 1: we'll just deliver it to you. If you have any questions,
- 22:58Speaker 1: let me know. And he walks away, and I'm like, okay, okay,
- 23:03Speaker 1: so fine. But here's the funny thing about it is
- 23:05Speaker 1: Alamo Draft House is extreme. It's almost like the Masters,
- 23:09Speaker 1: like the Master's golf tournament. Yeah, no cell phones allowed
- 23:15Speaker 1: at all. So wait, so how are you supposed to
- 23:17Speaker 1: scan a QR code? Yeah, so that right off the bat,
- 23:20Speaker 1: I'm like, wait. As soon as this says this to me,
- 23:22Speaker 1: I look up at the screen and there's an advertisement
- 23:25Speaker 1: on the screen that says put your cell phones away,
- 23:29Speaker 1: and then in small print below it says, yes, we
- 23:31Speaker 1: do realize how ironic this is with the new QR codes,
- 23:35Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. And so I'm like, okay, this just
- 23:38Speaker 1: doesn't fit with the whole vibe. So I scan the
- 23:41Speaker 1: QR code. I go through and I'm like trying to order,
- 23:44Speaker 1: and people are yelling at me because they're like, hey,
- 23:46Speaker 1: put your phone down. I'm like, I'm trying to order
- 23:49Speaker 1: the popcorn.
- 23:51Speaker 2: Shut up, you know.
- 23:53Speaker 1: So then I finally order the popcorn, and then it
- 23:56Speaker 1: takes forever to get it, and I'm watching these these
- 24:00Speaker 1: these these servers, these runners, they're coming by to deliver things,
- 24:04Speaker 1: and they have a bowl of popcorn in one hand
- 24:07Speaker 1: and their hand in the pocket when the other hand,
- 24:10Speaker 1: you've got two hands, grab two orders. Like the movie
- 24:16Speaker 1: was halfway done before we even got our popcorn, and
- 24:19Speaker 1: M and m's that's a good no. And so then
- 24:22Speaker 1: I finally leave the theater and I get on the
- 24:24Speaker 1: internet and I'm looking and apparently this was all by design.
- 24:28Speaker 1: These servers are boycotting the QR codes. Oh so they're
- 24:32Speaker 1: giving slow service on purpose because it leads to less
- 24:36Speaker 1: tips because they don't get tipped directly. It has to
- 24:40Speaker 1: go through the QR system and then it gets split
- 24:43Speaker 1: amongst all of the servers in the theater, no matter
- 24:47Speaker 1: how many places you run to or not not good,
- 24:50Speaker 1: So you're you're not incentivized to deliver more food. You
- 24:55Speaker 1: just have to be there period. All Right, we're gonna
- 24:57Speaker 1: take a break. We come back, hopefully Sean will be
- 24:59Speaker 1: joining us. I want to find out what you thought
- 25:01Speaker 1: about the Super Mario Galaxy movie. I'm Andy Taylor. I'm justin.
- 25:04Speaker 1: Let me find us on the web at tech talk
- 25:06Speaker 1: radio dot com. We'll be right back and now fact
- 25:10Speaker 1: to tech Talk Radio. So I mentioned before the break,
- 25:14Speaker 1: we I went to go see the new Super Mario
- 25:17Speaker 1: Galaxy movie. Sean is also also seen, and Shawan is here.
- 25:22Speaker 1: Hey Sean, how you doing? Hey? How are Yeah?
- 25:26Speaker 2: I fell asleep and the boys sleep just like a
- 25:29Speaker 2: tip member.
- 25:30Speaker 1: Remember we record this on Arizona time, but Sean is
- 25:33Speaker 1: like three hours ahead of us.
- 25:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Yeah, for me and the.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Boys, it was a rough knight with the boys and
- 25:38Speaker 2: it is fine anyway.
- 25:40Speaker 1: So we went to go see the Galaxy movie. I
- 25:43Speaker 1: went into the movie with kind of like a low expectation, thinking, Okay,
- 25:48Speaker 1: this is a typical sequel, you know, it's they're just
- 25:51Speaker 1: throwing money at stuff to try to make some more
- 25:53Speaker 1: money out of an ip. I kind of enjoyed it
- 25:58Speaker 1: for me, and I'm gonna ask Sean is the same
- 25:59Speaker 1: opinion here? For me, it felt like they were just
- 26:02Speaker 1: trying to throw as many new characters as they possibly
- 26:07Speaker 1: could within the two hour mark and be like, look,
- 26:12Speaker 1: this is all Nintendo. It felt like a giant advertisement
- 26:16Speaker 1: for Nintendo instead of a movie about the Mario brothers.
- 26:19Speaker 1: It felt like, Oh, here's star Fox, here's so and so,
- 26:24Speaker 1: here's so and so like, here's I mean, just like
- 26:27Speaker 1: I'm like and I had trouble keeping up with the characters.
- 26:30Speaker 1: And even Eric sitting next to me, was like, he
- 26:32Speaker 1: turns over to me at the half foot point of
- 26:35Speaker 1: the movie, He's like, he knocks me on the shoulder,
- 26:36Speaker 1: and he's like, who is Fox McCleod. The character Fox
- 26:41Speaker 1: McLeod is played by the guy from Twisters, Glenn Powell.
- 26:45Speaker 1: When he found out that this movie was gonna include
- 26:48Speaker 1: Fox McLeod, he actually contacted Nintendo directly and said, please, please,
- 26:53Speaker 1: for all that is holy, let me play this character.
- 26:55Speaker 1: This was my favorite character growing up, right, and I
- 26:59Speaker 1: have to play this character. And Nintendo's like, okay, So
- 27:03Speaker 1: Glenn Powell plays Fox McCloud. So the movie is good,
- 27:07Speaker 1: don't get me wrong. But it is very, very weird
- 27:10Speaker 1: because you're also torn between good and evil in the movie.
- 27:15Speaker 1: And Sean knows what I'm talking about. I don't want
- 27:17Speaker 1: to do any spoilers, but it's just kind of a
- 27:20Speaker 1: weird situation. Sean, what is your take on it?
- 27:23Speaker 2: It was just a lot right, A lot of people
- 27:26Speaker 2: were saying a hose opened up on your face and
- 27:29Speaker 2: you were just fedding Nintendo. Yeah, right, just the Nintendo
- 27:34Speaker 2: opened up the pipe and dumped every single ip from
- 27:37Speaker 2: the Nintendo vault on your face.
- 27:39Speaker 1: I'm surprised they didn't throw Metroid in their samus, you know,
- 27:42Speaker 1: wow or link or whatever.
- 27:44Speaker 2: I My gut feeling is that we have just entered
- 27:49Speaker 2: the Marvel phase of the Nintendo multiverse.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Yeah, then a multiverse yeah with like there.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Are there are two theories that I have and two
- 27:57Speaker 2: of these one of these series comes from a from
- 27:59Speaker 2: a co worker by who I saw the movie with,
- 28:01Speaker 2: is that we're either seeing some spinoff series, so we'll
- 28:04Speaker 2: either see a Star Fox movie, rumors floating that there's
- 28:08Speaker 2: going to be a Super Smash Brothers movie. And that's
- 28:11Speaker 2: why we and that's why we saw in an introduction
- 28:14Speaker 2: to so many different variations of Nintendo characters across the
- 28:19Speaker 2: whole I mean, yes, it was Nintendo Galaxy, right, they're
- 28:21Speaker 2: kind of playing into that. We're going around the Nintendo Galaxy.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Let's bring what would a Super Smash Brothers movie look like? Now,
- 28:29Speaker 1: for those of you who don't know what Smash brothers,
- 28:32Speaker 1: Smash Brothers is like, it'd be like a Mortal Kombat.
- 28:37Speaker 1: It's a fighting exactly what I said, fighting game. Yeah, okay,
- 28:40Speaker 1: there you go.
- 28:41Speaker 2: My coworker that brought up the stereo. I was like,
- 28:43Speaker 2: it just would be Nintendo's Mortal Kombat.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Tell it would be Yeah, it's it's like it's a
- 28:49Speaker 1: fighting game. So how would they turn that into a movie.
- 28:52Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 28:53Speaker 1: I mean they they even introduced mister uh what what
- 28:56Speaker 1: you might call the the mister black and white like
- 28:59Speaker 1: stick men I figures the game and watch. Yeah, mister Kama.
- 29:02Speaker 1: They had Rob, they had mister gam and Watch. They
- 29:06Speaker 1: introduced Pim's pick Men's. There was just so many characters
- 29:11Speaker 1: in this movie. You're just like, wait, wait, hold on, oh,
- 29:13Speaker 1: there goes that guy.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Did you like it, Sean, Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed the
- 29:17Speaker 2: movie right, I did too. A couple of other reviews
- 29:19Speaker 2: that I read were that if you're a late thirties
- 29:23Speaker 2: mid forties dad and you're taking your kid there for
- 29:26Speaker 2: the first time to see a movie, or your kids
- 29:29Speaker 2: at movie age, it's going to be a very large
- 29:34Speaker 2: nostalgic bomb dropped on your face. The first movie was great.
- 29:38Speaker 2: I thought the premise was good and it was its
- 29:40Speaker 2: own unique story. It was the own unique storyline had not.
- 29:43Speaker 2: I mean it followed some of the game design or whatever.
- 29:47Speaker 2: This one followed more of the traditional game design from
- 29:51Speaker 2: the original games. I wish my brothers would have been
- 29:53Speaker 2: there with me to see it because Mauser was my
- 29:55Speaker 2: favorite boss for Marblos to them all time, so it
- 29:58Speaker 2: was cool to see them.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Who playing the toad boss? I forget the guy.
- 30:02Speaker 2: It was like, I can picture his face. He's from
- 30:03Speaker 2: Hot Tub, Time Machine and the movies. And yes, Louise
- 30:07Speaker 2: Guzman or whatever.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, ok, yeah, I like him.
- 30:12Speaker 2: Just a great, great overall character flavor. A ton of
- 30:15Speaker 2: a list celebrities of this movie, so they just made it.
- 30:18Speaker 2: It just elevated the production value of the movie.
- 30:20Speaker 1: But there's a voice, right obviously, this just voice yeah
- 30:24Speaker 1: yeah yeah.
- 30:25Speaker 2: But overall overall a great movie. It was a great
- 30:27Speaker 2: time for it to drop and kind of a kind
- 30:30Speaker 2: of a lame movie market at the moment. I enjoyed it.
- 30:33Speaker 1: It went up against a project Hail Mary, I want
- 30:35Speaker 1: to go see that. That looks like a really good
- 30:37Speaker 1: movie too.
- 30:38Speaker 2: Ryan Gosling, I feel like we're in We had a
- 30:42Speaker 2: little bit of a weird regression with sci fi movies,
- 30:45Speaker 2: and I feel like right now, space is hot. Well, yeah,
- 30:50Speaker 2: I feel like we're in another good push of unique
- 30:54Speaker 2: defining sci fi genre.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Again, what do you count Mario Galaxy as a sci fi? Though?
- 30:58Speaker 2: Sci fi fantasy, which it's people interested in space and
- 31:03Speaker 2: that kind of stuff.
- 31:04Speaker 1: A couple of things we wanted to move on to
- 31:06Speaker 1: is NAB in Las Vegas. Now, Sean, you weren't able
- 31:09Speaker 1: to go this year? Can you tell us what that's
- 31:12Speaker 1: all about?
- 31:13Speaker 2: National Association of Broadcasters. So it's the largest broadcast trade
- 31:18Speaker 2: show in the country. The only other one this larger
- 31:21Speaker 2: is IBC, which is International Broadcast something right. It's held
- 31:25Speaker 2: in Vegas every year. I got to go for the
- 31:27Speaker 2: first time last year and I did. I did a
- 31:29Speaker 2: live hit with Andy during the show. We recorded a
- 31:31Speaker 2: segment last year from the floor, which was really cool.
- 31:34Speaker 1: That's cool.
- 31:35Speaker 2: But I had my flights booked, I had my hotels
- 31:38Speaker 2: booked and everything, and then Notre Dame Day and the
- 31:41Speaker 2: development team at the university came and said, here's our
- 31:44Speaker 2: two days for our live telethon show that we do
- 31:46Speaker 2: every year. It's our biggest show we do, and it's
- 31:48Speaker 2: the Tuesday and Wednesday of NAP.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Oh Man, all right, so what are what is the
- 31:55Speaker 1: tracks for this year software hardware, acquisition.
- 31:59Speaker 2: Acquisition, acquisition acquisition. There have been a handful of big
- 32:02Speaker 2: acquisitions in the industry that have surprised a lot of people,
- 32:06Speaker 2: and twenty one ten is the buzzword again this year.
- 32:09Speaker 2: So twenty one ten is the IP standard for broadcast,
- 32:13Speaker 2: so if you're in broadcast at all or you're dealing
- 32:16Speaker 2: with the live video IP is IP and twenty one
- 32:20Speaker 2: ten are the big ones. Black Magic Design just dropped
- 32:25Speaker 2: a brand new virtual audio console which actually has a
- 32:28Speaker 2: hardware surface too. They announced a twenty one ten switcher.
- 32:32Speaker 2: They announced some other twenty one ten peripherals. Like again,
- 32:35Speaker 2: this is just a few vendors that have dropped a
- 32:37Speaker 2: couple teasers in there. The big one that I that
- 32:40Speaker 2: came across my desk today my email today was that Redal,
- 32:44Speaker 2: which is a broadcast company mostly that deals with comms
- 32:47Speaker 2: like in comms bought ari Ari is one of the
- 32:52Speaker 2: leading like cinema camera manufacturers for filmmakers and aar they're
- 32:58Speaker 2: a cinema company. And that was not on my twenty
- 33:02Speaker 2: twenty six Bengo card that Reade is going to buy them,
- 33:06Speaker 2: because that's a huge acquisition they're both German companies, so
- 33:08Speaker 2: that makes sense. And having personally met Thomas Reedel and
- 33:13Speaker 2: have a lot of retal equipment that we use on
- 33:16Speaker 2: a daily basis, I'm interested to see where that fits
- 33:19Speaker 2: in their portfolio and how how that's going to change
- 33:22Speaker 2: what they do. Does that make sense? Just like I
- 33:24Speaker 2: think they're growing to be into more of a powerhouse
- 33:27Speaker 2: in the production industry as a whole, not just comms,
- 33:30Speaker 2: but they're you know, their their fusion system, their media
- 33:33Speaker 2: net system is really powerful, and they're getting into more
- 33:36Speaker 2: of the twenty one ten side. So maybe now having
- 33:39Speaker 2: an optics an optics piece and a cinema piece in
- 33:43Speaker 2: there could kind of like just bring full circle back
- 33:46Speaker 2: and kind of add a little bit more value to
- 33:47Speaker 2: the production side of their business.
- 33:49Speaker 1: I like a maybe the Big conference because we see
- 33:53Speaker 1: a lot of stuff that that is designed exclusively for broadcasters,
- 33:58Speaker 1: whether it be a you know, audio radio. We see
- 34:02Speaker 1: a lot of that technology you talked about, you know,
- 34:05Speaker 1: black Magic Designs audio editor. There's also a lot of
- 34:09Speaker 1: hype going on right now about Da Vinci Resolved twenty
- 34:11Speaker 1: one YEP, which you know, I've talked to people who
- 34:15Speaker 1: use Riverside to do editing, and they want to do
- 34:18Speaker 1: some other things that maybe Riverside can't do. And I
- 34:20Speaker 1: always tell them take a look at Vinci if you
- 34:22Speaker 1: don't want to, you know, jump into the Adobe world,
- 34:25Speaker 1: you know, or final cut from from Apple if you
- 34:28Speaker 1: want to play around, Da Vinci could be a good
- 34:30Speaker 1: way to do it. And they're doing things now with Resolve.
- 34:33Speaker 1: You know, if some people got upset at Adobe when
- 34:35Speaker 1: Adobe went to they're really just a paid platform. Yeah,
- 34:39Speaker 1: that's it, it's paid for us.
- 34:40Speaker 2: Software as a service is probably one of the worst
- 34:42Speaker 2: things that's ever happened in the industry.
- 34:44Speaker 1: Black Magic Design is doing it differently, and then now
- 34:47Speaker 1: have a new product that is going to take on
- 34:50Speaker 1: Adobe Lightroom. So professional photographers that maybe shoot some video,
- 34:55Speaker 1: do some audio are now going to have a light
- 34:58Speaker 1: room feature built in, or type of light rum feature,
- 35:01Speaker 1: I should say, into Resolve twenty one. I really it
- 35:04Speaker 1: took a while to get used to, but I really
- 35:06Speaker 1: do like Da Vinci Resolve for just how easy it
- 35:09Speaker 1: is to work, and the color correction that you can
- 35:11Speaker 1: do on it is pretty amazing.
- 35:12Speaker 2: The color corrector is probably the most powerful one out there,
- 35:15Speaker 2: and a lot of people actually will edit in premiere
- 35:17Speaker 2: or final cut, export to Da Vinci to color grade
- 35:21Speaker 2: and then bring it back into to finish final touching.
- 35:24Speaker 2: And if you're talking about getting cinema quality stuff. The
- 35:27Speaker 2: other big one that came out was GoPro. Have you
- 35:29Speaker 2: seen the news about GoPro?
- 35:30Speaker 1: No? No, oh, they are ending the Hero line.
- 35:34Speaker 3: What what that's their flagship right, So about I want
- 35:40Speaker 3: to say, two or three weeks ago, they released some
- 35:42Speaker 3: new footage from their new flagship camera.
- 35:45Speaker 2: They didn't we didn't know what it was called yet,
- 35:47Speaker 2: but it's it's a cinema look and their their camera quality.
- 35:51Speaker 2: The cinema quality footage was just mind blowing. You looked
- 35:53Speaker 2: at you like, wow, this is from a GoPro. It's crazy.
- 35:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 35:56Speaker 2: So they finally revealed their new camera line Go. It's
- 36:00Speaker 2: called the Go Pro, the Mission One and the Mission
- 36:03Speaker 2: one ILS. It's a new They created a whole new
- 36:07Speaker 2: sensor for this camera called the GP three. So GoPro
- 36:11Speaker 2: has their own sensor in there now, and their twenty
- 36:14Speaker 2: twenty six lineup has three cameras, the Mission one Pro,
- 36:18Speaker 2: the Mission One and the Mission ILS, so notably leaving
- 36:22Speaker 2: out anything titled Hero.
- 36:24Speaker 1: The Hero's been around a long time.
- 36:25Speaker 2: It's been around since twenty and eleven when they introduced
- 36:28Speaker 2: the Motorsports Hero.
- 36:30Speaker 1: You're using the Hero three, right, I have the.
- 36:32Speaker 2: Hero three plus. It's you know, it's just a great sensor.
- 36:36Speaker 2: I mean, it's just good. It looks good, and I
- 36:39Speaker 2: you know, I spoke at Ferris last week. Yes, I spoke.
- 36:43Speaker 2: I got asked to speak at their media festival, and
- 36:45Speaker 2: I actually talked about how my first job out of college,
- 36:49Speaker 2: I was tasked with finding an in car camera system
- 36:51Speaker 2: for something we were doing with car and Driver at
- 36:53Speaker 2: the time to mount cameras inside, and anything that you
- 36:56Speaker 2: could find was either super expensive, proprietary, or very bulk.
- 37:00Speaker 2: And we ended up finding this four camera lipstick camera
- 37:04Speaker 2: muckster that MUCKs it down into four cameras into one
- 37:07Speaker 2: four eighty I stream and it was not great, but
- 37:10Speaker 2: it worked for what we wanted. But in that research,
- 37:12Speaker 2: I found this little website called go pro based out
- 37:16Speaker 2: of Santa Monica, California, and I was like, what is
- 37:18Speaker 2: this little camera you do for surfing? And it's got
- 37:21Speaker 2: you know, it's it's a four eighty I av I
- 37:24Speaker 2: compressed and I was like, whatever, I'll buy one and
- 37:27Speaker 2: I'll post the links so you can post it. But
- 37:29Speaker 2: I bought the first go Pro because they only offered
- 37:34Speaker 2: it for sale on their website. They didn't have they
- 37:37Speaker 2: were just brand new. This was in early two thousand
- 37:40Speaker 2: and eight that I bought this, and I took it
- 37:42Speaker 2: out and shot a bunch of shot a ton of
- 37:44Speaker 2: stuff and then it just went crazy. And I've bought
- 37:47Speaker 2: a lot of GoPro since then, but.
- 37:50Speaker 1: It easier could fix it to surfboards. I remember that
- 37:53Speaker 1: when the first one, Yeah.
- 37:54Speaker 2: His first one was actually a wrist about it to
- 37:57Speaker 2: his wrist and it took pictures, Yeah, and then it
- 38:00Speaker 2: took video, and then he designed it into the the
- 38:03Speaker 2: just the original go Pro, and then they announced Yeah,
- 38:06Speaker 2: and then they announced the Hero in I want to
- 38:08Speaker 2: say late two thousand and nine, early twenty ten, and
- 38:12Speaker 2: then the Hero HD came out after that. Because it
- 38:15Speaker 2: was all just in four eighty I until the Hero
- 38:19Speaker 2: HD came in and then you could do ten eighty.
- 38:21Speaker 2: They went. They made a huge jump from standard DEF
- 38:23Speaker 2: to HD. But even the Avii, because it was AVI right,
- 38:27Speaker 2: it was so uncompressed it looked fantastic off of a
- 38:31Speaker 2: small sensor, so they kind of blew away the convenience
- 38:36Speaker 2: market for accessibility of content, and that's where it blew
- 38:41Speaker 2: up right. Everybody was like, oh, I can put a
- 38:44Speaker 2: camera on my helmet. Oh I could mount a camera
- 38:46Speaker 2: on my race car. Oh I could mount a camera
- 38:49Speaker 2: to a weather balloon. And you get all this crazy
- 38:50Speaker 2: stuff and then just the content drove itself.
- 38:54Speaker 1: I've actually shot wedding Sean where I've taken go pros
- 38:58Speaker 1: and I've put them in trees, you know, over the
- 39:01Speaker 1: the an outdoor wedding, and i just hit record let
- 39:06Speaker 1: him run. So when I'm editing, I actually have b
- 39:09Speaker 1: roll to go to of the wedding. And the quality
- 39:11Speaker 1: the footage was great. It didn't have a fish eye
- 39:14Speaker 1: on it. I mean it looked, it looked perfect. All right,
- 39:17Speaker 1: we have to take a break. When we come back,
- 39:18Speaker 1: we have a listener question we want to ask, and
- 39:21Speaker 1: it's a big news from DJI as well, which is
- 39:24Speaker 1: surprising there's news coming out from them. We'll do that
- 39:27Speaker 1: when we come back with Tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor,
- 39:29Speaker 1: I'm Sean de Weird, and I'm justin Lemme send us
- 39:32Speaker 1: an X at tech Talk Radio. We'll be right back
- 39:35Speaker 1: now back to Chief Talk Radio.
- 39:38Speaker 2: So We're gonna open up this segment with a listener
- 39:40Speaker 2: question from Rick in Sajarta. Hello, Rick, Rick says, you
- 39:45Speaker 2: were talking not so long ago about storing old equipment
- 39:48Speaker 2: batteries bulging some good info. However, I have a laptop
- 39:53Speaker 2: I used for home, and notice the track pad was
- 39:55Speaker 2: beginning to buckle. Oh, something was growing. Should I replace
- 39:59Speaker 2: the entire thing or could it be an old battery expanding?
- 40:02Speaker 2: One is the battery? Get that laptop out of anywhere
- 40:06Speaker 2: you deem like you want to be important, because that
- 40:09Speaker 2: could split and then start a shower of sparks.
- 40:13Speaker 1: Yeah, you do not want to. We we call those
- 40:16Speaker 1: in the IT industry, we call those spicy pillows. Spicy.
- 40:21Speaker 2: There's a whole subredit dedicated to it called spicy pillows.
- 40:24Speaker 1: Go look it up.
- 40:25Speaker 2: It's about people finding bloated batteries from broken cells that
- 40:30Speaker 2: release the gas and then it's I mean, batteries are
- 40:34Speaker 2: just a bunch of chemicals in a spicy concoction that
- 40:38Speaker 2: want to get out right, and if you pierce it,
- 40:42Speaker 2: or it cracks or it swells up like that, it's damaged.
- 40:45Speaker 2: It's gotta go.
- 40:46Speaker 1: You don't want to try and poke a hole to
- 40:49Speaker 1: God no, because it will do you want to die?
- 40:53Speaker 1: It will be it's not gonna.
- 40:54Speaker 2: Explode, but it will be a shower of sparks and
- 40:57Speaker 2: fire and toxic gas, and it will burn you or
- 41:01Speaker 2: potentially burned in your home.
- 41:02Speaker 1: So my suggestion still stands.
- 41:05Speaker 2: If if it's a battery that came out of an
- 41:07Speaker 2: old cell phone or an old gaming system or something,
- 41:10Speaker 2: and you can't get rid of it, immediately, put it in.
- 41:13Speaker 2: Put it in a box of kittie litter, put it
- 41:15Speaker 2: in a box of sand, something to get it away
- 41:19Speaker 2: from anything flammable.
- 41:21Speaker 1: Yeah, no, where can you like? All Right, So say
- 41:24Speaker 1: Rick decides that he wants to keep the laptop. Is
- 41:28Speaker 1: it worth keeping the laptop? Yes, if it's already damaged
- 41:31Speaker 1: his track pad, then then the then the then the
- 41:34Speaker 1: the case itself has been compromised. No, it's not. I
- 41:37Speaker 1: have an anecdote to this story because I also had
- 41:40Speaker 1: a spicy pillow on a cell phone that I tried
- 41:44Speaker 1: to get rid of. Now here's the other problem. When
- 41:47Speaker 1: you have these spicy pillows, you can't get rid of
- 41:51Speaker 1: them like I've I've okay, I had it in the trash. No, God, no,
- 41:57Speaker 1: God no, no, you see those news stories about a
- 42:00Speaker 1: trash truck starting on fire for no unknown reason. It's
- 42:04Speaker 1: just because somebody threw a spicy pillow in there, right,
- 42:07Speaker 1: you can't get rid of them. I took a I
- 42:10Speaker 1: took an RC car battery, and I'm talking about like
- 42:14Speaker 1: a micro RC car. So the battery was probably one
- 42:17Speaker 1: inch by two inch and it was maybe a quarter
- 42:20Speaker 1: inch thick. I mean, it was a small battery, but
- 42:24Speaker 1: it was becoming, as we said, a spicy pillow. And
- 42:28Speaker 1: I took it to let's see. First, I took it
- 42:30Speaker 1: to Batteries Plus because they do free recycling on batteries.
- 42:35Speaker 1: They said, get it out of here, like literally, leave
- 42:39Speaker 1: the store. Do not No, nope, leave the store right now.
- 42:42Speaker 1: They were like concerned it was a ticking time Well
- 42:44Speaker 1: it technically is a ticking time bomb. But they were like, no,
- 42:47Speaker 1: we did not take that. Nope, get it out. Then
- 42:49Speaker 1: I took it over to best Buy because best Buy
- 42:51Speaker 1: said we do e cycling of all batteries. All was
- 42:55Speaker 1: the keyword. I took it into best Buy. Best Buy
- 42:58Speaker 1: is like, nope, get it out of here, and I said.
- 43:02Speaker 1: I went to their website and I showed them. I said,
- 43:04Speaker 1: you recycle all batteries and it says not not lithium
- 43:09Speaker 1: ion that has been compromised aka spicy pillow. You can't
- 43:14Speaker 1: get rid of these things. I still have that tiny
- 43:17Speaker 1: little spicy pillow in my garage, but I have it
- 43:21Speaker 1: in an AMMO case like I went to. I went
- 43:23Speaker 1: to the UH the Army Navy surplus store surplus and
- 43:28Speaker 1: I bought an actual steel AMO case and I put
- 43:34Speaker 1: my spicy pillows in that. Because I don't know where
- 43:38Speaker 1: to take them. I have thought multiple times, it's gonna
- 43:41Speaker 1: throw this in the trash because it's such such a
- 43:43Speaker 1: small little battery. It's not gonna do much. I don't
- 43:47Speaker 1: do it there.
- 43:48Speaker 2: Our County has a Hazardous Waste Material drop off pain
- 43:53Speaker 2: right damaged batteries. They will take them.
- 43:55Speaker 1: There's also a website green orgadgets dot org that's put
- 43:58Speaker 1: on by the Consumer Tech Knowledge the Association. They may
- 44:02Speaker 1: also be able to give you some of those those references.
- 44:05Speaker 1: But I heard the same things. I heard Best Bible
- 44:06Speaker 1: will take them. I've heard Batteries Plus will take them.
- 44:10Speaker 2: Nope, nope. But if they're swollen or showing signs of damage, not.
- 44:15Speaker 1: A chance nope. Well that's not good because it's.
- 44:18Speaker 2: A liability because they are going to not explode. They
- 44:22Speaker 2: will release their inner workings in a fiery shower of
- 44:29Speaker 2: sparks and gas.
- 44:31Speaker 1: Wow. So you really sanitized that comment, didn't you.
- 44:34Speaker 2: Yeah. I had to stop myself from cursing on the show.
- 44:39Speaker 1: All Right, we got another one. Hear this one from
- 44:42Speaker 1: Marty in Green Valley says, I'm hoping you might be
- 44:45Speaker 1: able to answer a question for me. Why are wireless
- 44:48Speaker 1: printers so hard to set up? It's been a battle
- 44:51Speaker 1: from Marty. I wonder if Marty was listen to the
- 44:53Speaker 1: show last week. I was trying to do this and
- 44:56Speaker 1: it just wasn't work. And they can be it. They
- 44:58Speaker 1: can be a real no got wireless printers in general,
- 45:02Speaker 1: printers can be a pain. I will tell you, Marty
- 45:06Speaker 1: one thing I found out a lot of us. You know,
- 45:08Speaker 1: we get our routers, we set them up, we set
- 45:10Speaker 1: them up for five G because we like that, you know,
- 45:13Speaker 1: we want to be able to connect with five G.
- 45:15Speaker 1: You'll find that some technology that we'll connect will not
- 45:19Speaker 1: connect at five G. We've seen that with some security
- 45:21Speaker 1: cameras and some printers. Of course, I've seen a line
- 45:25Speaker 1: of Epps and printers that will only connect to the
- 45:27Speaker 1: two point four spectrum. So if you know, if you're
- 45:30Speaker 1: having a problem connecting it just doesn't seem to be working,
- 45:32Speaker 1: you follow in all the directions that sometimes you'll have
- 45:35Speaker 1: to connect it via USB first, then do your wireless setting.
- 45:40Speaker 1: Just make sure you have two point four enabled on
- 45:43Speaker 1: your router so you're going to be able to connect.
- 45:45Speaker 2: And the harder part too, is sometimes people forget that
- 45:47Speaker 2: not necessarily forget, but don't know that DHCP leases time out, right,
- 45:52Speaker 2: You don't how often do you use your printer?
- 45:54Speaker 1: Right? Well, okay, hold on there, Okay, I know what
- 45:57Speaker 1: you're saying, Sean, and you're right to a certain However,
- 46:00Speaker 1: you have to understand how DHCP works. A DHCP lease
- 46:05Speaker 1: will run out. However, when that lease does run out,
- 46:10Speaker 1: the device that has that IP address will contact the
- 46:13Speaker 1: DHGP server, which is more likely your home router, and
- 46:18Speaker 1: it will say, hey, I was previously known as ten
- 46:21Speaker 1: dot one, dot one dot seven Can I still have that?
- 46:26Speaker 1: And your router will say that's fine, nobody else has it,
- 46:29Speaker 1: you can have it. But on the off chance, and
- 46:33Speaker 1: this does happen, that another device's DHCP lease runs out
- 46:37Speaker 1: at the exact same millisecond that your printer does and
- 46:44Speaker 1: it says, hey, I was previously known as ten one
- 46:48Speaker 1: one one seven whatever, and the and the router is
- 46:52Speaker 1: gonna be like, no, you're gonna be this now. Now
- 46:54Speaker 1: the DHB lease is going to be expired and your
- 46:56Speaker 1: printer is no longer known as that. But for all
- 46:59Speaker 1: intents and purposes, usually when a DHGP at least runs out,
- 47:05Speaker 1: the device that had it will continue to have it.
- 47:08Speaker 1: What what advice would you give to Is there anything
- 47:10Speaker 1: we say to Marty, Well, but exactly what exactly is
- 47:15Speaker 1: the problem.
- 47:16Speaker 2: That you didn't have a problem setting it up? Or
- 47:17Speaker 2: is it a problem print to it?
- 47:19Speaker 1: Right? Because wondering why it's so hard with my printer?
- 47:23Speaker 2: Right, I can connect to a wireslee if I want to,
- 47:26Speaker 2: I can print from my phone. I've done that. But
- 47:29Speaker 2: if I do, notice that if I try to do
- 47:32Speaker 2: something from it after a period of two three weeks
- 47:35Speaker 2: of not printing something, I have to go power cycle
- 47:37Speaker 2: and otherwise it's not gonna It doesn't respond to.
- 47:39Speaker 1: Because it's sad because you haven't played with it.
- 47:41Speaker 2: That's true. Technology has feelings. I'm an advocate of that.
- 47:44Speaker 1: So it's all right. So is it I go down.
- 47:48Speaker 1: I give my printer a nice spa every other week.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Probably not good because now for some reason it doesn't
- 47:54Speaker 1: want to work at all. It might be because I gave
- 47:56Speaker 1: it a bath. I don't know. That's not good too.
- 47:59Speaker 1: Don't do that. March, we had a you know, we
- 48:02Speaker 1: had a post last week talking about and this was
- 48:05Speaker 1: on We shared it on social media asking what's better
- 48:09Speaker 1: fiber or cable And it was from last week's question
- 48:12Speaker 1: that we got and justin you kind of covered some
- 48:15Speaker 1: of that. Fox Mule wanted to let us know. He said,
- 48:20Speaker 1: you know, when it comes to cable fiber, he says,
- 48:23Speaker 1: it is shared. When it comes to fiber, your neighbor's
- 48:26Speaker 1: packets are actually on your fiber line and just ignored
- 48:30Speaker 1: by your equipment. Residential fiber is similar to coax when
- 48:33Speaker 1: it comes to how it's delivered. G pond fiber and
- 48:36Speaker 1: doc sys cable are both shared. To the note, marketing
- 48:40Speaker 1: makes it all better, that is all. It's a lot
- 48:41Speaker 1: of different opinions on this, or one guy named fat Daddy,
- 48:46Speaker 1: that was his name. My one gig fiber is rarely
- 48:48Speaker 1: over seven hundred meg down and almost always nine hundred
- 48:52Speaker 1: meg up. There Some are saying that it's not symmetric.
- 48:55Speaker 1: Others are saying that.
- 48:56Speaker 2: It is what I found just from asking it. If
- 48:59Speaker 2: met was not dedicated from the house to the circuit,
- 49:05Speaker 2: is not from the house to the circuit, is just
- 49:07Speaker 2: a cable, then it goes to back to I've made
- 49:10Speaker 2: note right.
- 49:10Speaker 1: No, nobody's gonna have dedicated straight back to the ISP.
- 49:14Speaker 1: Nobody is no, unless you're a business and pay for it. Yeah,
- 49:17Speaker 1: so you're paying for residential, so you are going to
- 49:19Speaker 1: be shared. But you get better you get better speeds
- 49:22Speaker 1: with fiber. Yes, you get better upload because again with
- 49:25Speaker 1: cable you're gonna get like twenty five megabits up versus fiber,
- 49:28Speaker 1: you're gonna get like I do, nine hundred up.
- 49:31Speaker 2: But the comment you know your neighbor can see your
- 49:33Speaker 2: packets stuff.
- 49:34Speaker 1: That's just that's ridiculous.
- 49:35Speaker 2: It's your circuit goes to the note, it gets encrypted
- 49:38Speaker 2: and then it gets sent along the way or however
- 49:40Speaker 2: it's gonna work, right, But my neighbors are going to
- 49:43Speaker 2: have Yeah, they're not snooping.
- 49:45Speaker 1: I want to ask about this news. The Avada three
- 49:49Speaker 1: sixty DJI has introduced their drone now for the longest
- 49:54Speaker 1: time I've always thought we're gonna we're probably not gonna
- 49:57Speaker 1: see Dji drones available in the US, But now they're
- 50:00Speaker 1: saying it's on hype. You can actually buy it in
- 50:03Speaker 1: the US right now. The Evada three to sixty is
- 50:06Speaker 1: the challenger to the Anti Gravity A one, which I
- 50:08Speaker 1: get a chance to look at. It's about like seven
- 50:11Speaker 1: hundred bucks versus twelve hundred for the Anti Gravity A one.
- 50:15Speaker 1: So Sean, why why is this available in the US?
- 50:18Speaker 2: Sean, So they're calling this a grandfathered edge case because
- 50:23Speaker 2: the FCC approval for the Evada three sixty actually got
- 50:27Speaker 2: approved before the deadline passed. It was approved in November
- 50:33Speaker 2: of twenty twenty five, and the cutoff for the ban
- 50:37Speaker 2: was December late December or twenty twenty five, so the
- 50:40Speaker 2: FCC filings were in place before the ban went into effect,
- 50:45Speaker 2: meaning it's legally allowed in because it falls under the
- 50:48Speaker 2: old rules. A new drone from them that wasn't filed
- 50:51Speaker 2: before that deadline won't have these same rules and won't
- 50:54Speaker 2: be available to be marketed and sold in the US.
- 50:57Speaker 2: It can be legally imported and sold in the US.
- 51:00Speaker 2: It's often sold via third parties. B and H s, Amazon,
- 51:03Speaker 2: et cetera. Yeah, but availability is inconsistent due to tariffs
- 51:07Speaker 2: and other things. Right, so it's like it can't officially,
- 51:10Speaker 2: it can't officially launch it and support it in the US,
- 51:13Speaker 2: but it can still sell it.
- 51:14Speaker 1: Well, they've been they've been talking about it, and they're
- 51:16Speaker 1: saying it's it's finally available. So if people want to,
- 51:19Speaker 1: you know, look up the website find more. They're seeing
- 51:21Speaker 1: the quality is pretty amazing. If they're looking for a drone,
- 51:25Speaker 1: then that might be you know, one they want to
- 51:28Speaker 1: think about, you know, anti gravity. I like that was
- 51:30Speaker 1: also one of the last ones that was available before
- 51:33Speaker 1: the cutoff, and that way they were able to sell
- 51:35Speaker 1: it here in the US as well.
- 51:36Speaker 2: So the top five specs for this camera, right, and
- 51:39Speaker 2: I wanted to look it up because I had it
- 51:41Speaker 2: pulled up earlier. It's eight K three sixty so it's
- 51:44Speaker 2: got du dual eight K sensors on it, so I
- 51:47Speaker 2: could shoot a K eight K sixty eight three sixty.
- 51:51Speaker 1: Dude.
- 51:52Speaker 2: It's got dual sixty four megapixel sensors, so two one
- 51:55Speaker 2: in one two one one in one point one inch sensors,
- 51:59Speaker 2: so it'll shoot one hundred and twenty megapixel three sixty photos.
- 52:02Speaker 2: The aperture opens all the way to F one point nine,
- 52:04Speaker 2: so much more light on a larger sensor. It's good
- 52:07Speaker 2: twenty three flight time per battery, which is good for
- 52:10Speaker 2: an FPV style drone.
- 52:12Speaker 1: That's been it's not ours.
- 52:13Speaker 2: Yeah, And this is where I get sketchy. On the
- 52:16Speaker 2: transmission side, they say it'll do up to twelve K
- 52:20Speaker 2: I'm sorry, twenty kilometers twelve miles of line of basically
- 52:25Speaker 2: perfect condition line of slight range on the video transmission path.
- 52:30Speaker 2: So the transmission side of it is ten eighty P
- 52:33Speaker 2: sixty frame uses the four plus transmission system which is
- 52:38Speaker 2: on some of the other earlier Mavick models. Is fast
- 52:40Speaker 2: forty up to forty eight up to forty miles an hour,
- 52:43Speaker 2: and it can do the FPV style acrobatic tricks and
- 52:46Speaker 2: things like that, so it's much more flexible in nimble.
- 52:49Speaker 2: It's got its better omnidirectional sensing four K forward camera
- 52:53Speaker 2: or do a mode three sixty to one hundred and
- 52:56Speaker 2: eighty three cameras.
- 52:57Speaker 1: So our best place to get more handful on it
- 53:00Speaker 1: would would you say BSW or just go to DJI.
- 53:03Speaker 2: Would go to DJI, but BNH or Amazon are probably
- 53:05Speaker 2: your best bets.
- 53:06Speaker 1: So we got to take another break, come back with
- 53:08Speaker 1: more of tech talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Sean
- 53:10Speaker 1: de Weird, and I'm justin. Let me find us on
- 53:12Speaker 1: the web at tech talk radio dot com. We'll be
- 53:15Speaker 1: right back and now back to tech talk Radio.
- 53:19Speaker 2: So we've talked a lot about on the show how
- 53:20Speaker 2: to build your computers and things that you install when
- 53:23Speaker 2: you install to check things. Hardware Monitor and CPU cpuz
- 53:28Speaker 2: id are two softwares that I've recommended on the show before.
- 53:32Speaker 2: Be careful where you're getting it right now. Really, last
- 53:35Speaker 2: week early April, the Register, which is a security website,
- 53:40Speaker 2: posted that users were identifying that the hardware monitor at
- 53:44Speaker 2: cpuz files were triggering malware and antivirus flags. So basically,
- 53:52Speaker 2: somebody they got hacked, some of something happened and they
- 53:55Speaker 2: were injecting. Somebody was injecting malware into the executables of
- 53:59Speaker 2: the file from the known website that you get those from.
- 54:03Speaker 2: So just be careful if you're getting Hardware Info, Harbor Monitor,
- 54:08Speaker 2: or cpuz, just make sure you're getting an up to
- 54:11Speaker 2: day version. I don't know if there's a version that
- 54:13Speaker 2: you should be looking for. But it looks like one
- 54:16Speaker 2: point sixty three Harbor Monitor one point sixty three is
- 54:20Speaker 2: not the version you want. Get something newer than that.
- 54:22Speaker 2: Otherwise you're risking getting a virus or malware installed when
- 54:26Speaker 2: you do it.
- 54:26Speaker 1: Have you guys noticed lately that the uptick and attempts
- 54:32Speaker 1: through email through text because it just seems like the numbers.
- 54:36Speaker 2: Just so it's it's so much, it's just kind of
- 54:39Speaker 2: I'm kind of tuned it all out.
- 54:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I've only gotten jaded to it. Yeah, it's it's
- 54:44Speaker 1: a lot to manage, and it gets people they don't
- 54:47Speaker 1: check their email now.
- 54:48Speaker 2: And even the big leaker for Rockstar wasn't as big
- 54:52Speaker 2: as he said it was. He was claiming that he
- 54:55Speaker 2: had all this stuff from Rockstar and Rockstar didn't pay
- 54:57Speaker 2: in the ransom and he released it. It was all
- 54:59Speaker 2: just financial data.
- 55:00Speaker 1: Was nothing important, crazy stuff. All right, that's it for
- 55:04Speaker 1: this week's Tech Talk Radio. I want to thank everybody
- 55:06Speaker 1: for tuning in and listening. If you have a question
- 55:08Speaker 1: for the show, like we read earlier, email us tech
- 55:11Speaker 1: guys at tech talk radio dot com. I'm Andy Taylor,
- 55:14Speaker 1: I'm sean to Weird and I'm justin let me have
