- 0:01If we reflect on our own efforts to change things in our lives,
- 0:05whether a resolution to follow a diet, exercise regularly, create
- 0:10a work rest balance, spend more time with our families, or carry
- 0:16out some effort in our religious or spiritual focus, we will
- 0:20quickly see that our resolve does not always get carried out
- 0:24in our lives. We berate ourselves for lack of
- 0:27willpower without fully working out why that seems to be the
- 0:31case that we cannot follow through.
- 0:34We feel compelled in many cases to do things that are self
- 0:38defeating. Of course willpower can be
- 0:41practised, strengthened and developed.
- 0:45Yet there is an underlying issue that actually is a primary
- 0:49causative factor in this failure, which the mother terms
- 0:53lack of sincerity. What is sincerity?
- 0:57In this context we first need to explore and understand the
- 1:01different parts of our being and their different demands and
- 1:05desires. The psychic being is focused on
- 1:08our spiritual growth and development.
- 1:11For most people it is quiet behind the veil of the external
- 1:15being and rarely shapes our their lives.
- 1:19When it comes forward and takes a leading role, then it can have
- 1:23an influence to both guide and direct the other parts of the
- 1:27being and harmonize them around the central focus.
- 1:32The mind, the vital being and the physical body each have
- 1:36their own needs, wants, desires, and cherish directions, and they
- 1:42will tend to assert themselves. They undermine the will whenever
- 1:47they are not aligned for the same purpose and direction.
- 1:50The body may crave certain foods.
- 1:53The vital may seek the fulfillment of certain desires
- 1:57and they have a way of Co opting the mind to agree and provide an
- 2:02excuse or rationale for the outcome they desire.
- 2:07Sincerity is this process of bringing all the parts of the
- 2:11being to agreement about the goals, purposes and actions to
- 2:15support the central purpose of the being and the life, the
- 2:20mother observes. Quote There are people who tell
- 2:23me I don't have the willpower to overcome desire.
- 2:28That means you are not sincere, for sincerity is an infinitely
- 2:33more powerful force than all the wills in the world.
- 2:37It can change anything, whatever.
- 2:39In the twinkling of an eye. It takes hold of it, grips it,
- 2:44pulls it out, and then it's over.
- 2:47But you close your eyes. You find excuses for yourself.
- 2:52Sincerity is the safeguard, the protection, the guide, and
- 2:56finally the transforming power. Reference Sri Aurobindo and the
