Speaker 4: Welcome to Let's Talk with Carl Lee. Let's Talk is
• 0:26
Speaker 4: probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker, Real Talk, Real experience,
• 0:30
Speaker 4: Real results, Frank Walker Law dot Com. Let that conversation
• 0:34
Speaker 4: begin on Let's Talk.
• 0:37
Speaker 5: Hello, ladies and gentlemen. This is Carl Lee with Let's Talk.
• 0:41
Speaker 5: And unfortunately we don't Lisa, we don't have Hollis Lewis
• 0:46
Speaker 5: in the studio with us.
• 0:47
Speaker 6: But I have you, you have me you bless your heart,
• 0:51
Speaker 6: I think, and I know you missed me last week
• 0:55
  Speaker 6: in person.
• 0:55
  Speaker 5: I did. I did. I did, I did because I
• 1:01
Speaker 5: didn't have a fight last week.
• 1:03
Speaker 3: So I really do think. I really do think.
• 1:08
Speaker 5: That we're going to probably have some different opinions, different
• 1:11
  Speaker 5: opinions today.
• 1:13
Speaker 3: I think. I think so one of the one.
• 1:17
Speaker 5: Of the interesting Well, let me, I don't want to
• 1:20
Speaker 5: say interesting concerning things that I have, and I'm going
• 1:24
Speaker 5: to start at the bottom of our list of conversations
• 1:26
Speaker 5: so that so that you're aware. One of the interesting
• 1:37
Speaker 5: things to me and concerning things to me. When I
• 1:40
Speaker 5: think about young athletes and we talk about like being examples,
• 1:46
Speaker 5: like being an example for a young kid in high
• 1:49
  Speaker 5: school or college.
• 1:51
Speaker 3: Or youth football and sports that.
• 1:54
Speaker 5: The City of South Charleston producers, it's it's hard to.
• 2:01
Speaker 3: Be that role model.
• 2:03
Speaker 5: If they don't see who you are and and and
• 2:11
Speaker 5: your the kids, the kids or high school athletes they made.
• 2:17
Speaker 5: You know, I'll make this case for me. The high
• 2:22
Speaker 5: school has some some some pictures of me, jersey of me,
• 2:28
Speaker 5: all kinds of different things in the trophy case and
• 2:30
Speaker 5: that memorabilia around the school. Those kids see that, Okay, okay,
• 2:36
Speaker 5: once you've seen it, once you're done. But you don't
• 2:40
Speaker 5: really know who I am. You don't know if I'm
• 2:42
Speaker 5: still in West Virginia.
• 2:44
Speaker 3: You don't know. Unless you have a contact with me.
• 2:47
Speaker 3: You don't really know.
• 2:49
Speaker 5: Like like I got an opportunity to talk to four
• 2:53
Speaker 5: or five athletes a couple of weeks ago, and I
• 2:56
Speaker 5: think I mentioned it on the show then, And they
• 2:59
Speaker 5: had no idea of.
• 3:03
  Speaker 3: My career none.
• 3:06
Speaker 7: And this is the what age range this is?
• 3:09
Speaker 5: This is probably sophomore, junior in high school. Okay, okay,
• 3:15
Speaker 5: And and it doesn't bother me for me, but it
• 3:21
Speaker 5: bothers me for them because if they don't know me,
• 3:27
Speaker 5: they don't know Kurt Warner from Pineville. They don't know
• 3:31
Speaker 5: Robert Alexander from South Charleston. No, no, no chance of history.
• 3:38
Speaker 5: They don't maybe know they may know Randy's name, but
• 3:42
Speaker 5: they don't know just how great he was. And Jason
• 3:50
Speaker 5: Williams okay, and a lot of those athletes. You know,
• 3:58
Speaker 5: you look at somebody like a Jerry West, right, we
• 4:01
Speaker 5: try to find that. We get upset a lot of times.
• 4:05
Speaker 5: We get upset because these athletes don't come home. They
• 4:08
Speaker 5: don't come back. The question I have is why don't
• 4:12
Speaker 5: they come back? And I'm going to make the case
• 4:16
Speaker 5: that they don't come back because every one of them
• 4:19
Speaker 5: have had negativity because for some reason, whether you thought
• 4:26
Speaker 5: it was that or you didn't, those athletes have an
• 4:31
Speaker 5: issue of why they don't come back.
• 4:35
  Speaker 7: Yeah, that's a tough one.
• 4:37
  Speaker 3: Yeah, that's well.
• 4:38
Speaker 7: I mean, okay, I'm going to start with this.
• 4:40
Speaker 6: I think you have to look at each individual athlete
• 4:43
Speaker 6: that you just named, the choices they made when they
• 4:46
Speaker 6: went on to their college careers and then their professional careers.
• 4:50
Speaker 6: Some had a choice of staying here in West Virginia
• 4:55
Speaker 6: and going to Marshall University and going to WVU or
• 5:00
Speaker 6: maybe a smaller college. And some chose to do that,
• 5:02
Speaker 6: like you, Carl okay, Jason Williams, you know, chose he
• 5:07
Speaker 6: chose to go to Marshall, right, he went to Marshall, Okay.
• 5:11
Speaker 6: And then there were other athletes such as your Kurt Warner,
• 5:14
Speaker 6: which there's a perception that they didn't choose to come here,
• 5:19
Speaker 6: even though we know the background story, and because uh,
• 5:24
Speaker 6: you know, we think they had a choice of whether
• 5:28
Speaker 6: or not they could go to WU or Marshall, and
• 5:31
Speaker 6: they chose to go somewhere else, and that leaves a
• 5:33
Speaker 6: bad taste in the mouth of some of the fans
• 5:37
Speaker 6: of in West Virginia.
• 5:39
Speaker 7: Are you following me here?
• 5:40
  Speaker 3: Okay?
• 5:41
Speaker 6: Because I think in West Virginia particularly, we have always
• 5:48
Speaker 6: had to battle. We've always had this media cultural perception
• 5:52
Speaker 6: out there. We've got some negative stereotypes that follow our population. Right,
• 5:58
Speaker 6: we're called Billbilly sometime. We've got this s against the
• 6:01
Speaker 6: world mentality, and I think our fan bases have equated
• 6:08
Speaker 6: athletic success as a direct reflection of our state's identity
• 6:13
Speaker 6: and their own identity, and so when someone rejects that,
• 6:16
Speaker 6: such as a Kurt Warner or you know, Randy when
• 6:21
Speaker 6: he left, even though he did play ball at Marshall,
• 6:23
Speaker 6: he did have when he went to the Hall of
• 6:26
Speaker 6: Fame ceremony, I don't think he had a whole lot
• 6:29
Speaker 6: to say about Marshall if I recall it correctly. And
• 6:33
Speaker 6: then you also looked at his documentary about his high
• 6:36
Speaker 6: school days and career. I think that when people see
• 6:41
Speaker 6: those things, and I'm not judging, this is not judgmental
• 6:46
Speaker 6: at all. Okay, this is more of a cultural a
• 6:52
Speaker 6: cultural tendency. I think for West Virginians that they take
• 6:56
Speaker 6: it as even though it's not intended as a personal insult,
• 7:00
Speaker 6: when athletes choose to leave and maybe go a different
• 7:04
Speaker 6: path than a lot of West Virginians, but West Virginians
• 7:09
Speaker 6: sometimes view that as an insult.
• 7:12
Speaker 3: All right, do you see where I'm going here?
• 7:15
Speaker 7: And I can I'm not saying for every single athlete.
• 7:18
  Speaker 5: No, I understand, and I get, I totally understand. I
• 7:23
Speaker 5: totally understand everything that you said. What I will say first,
• 7:30
Speaker 5: and I'm going to go back to the person who
• 7:34
Speaker 5: was my mentor was the guy who put me into
• 7:38
Speaker 5: the and it took me in, took me in and
• 7:42
Speaker 5: made me a professional athlete.
• 7:45
Speaker 3: Okay, and that's Robert Alexander.
• 7:47
Speaker 5: Yes, I I visibly looked at and watched and I've
• 7:56
Speaker 5: said this a thousand times when this name, when his
• 7:58
Speaker 5: name comes up and we have a conversation in and
• 8:01
Speaker 5: around him, I've seen the petitions of the people who
• 8:08
Speaker 5: wanted him to go to WVU.
• 8:09
Speaker 7: Okay, perfect example of what I just said. Keep going.
• 8:14
Speaker 5: Because you loved West Virginia and you love WVU, and
• 8:18
Speaker 5: you love WVU football and Marshall and Marshall and Marshall.
• 8:24
Speaker 5: Those places have to do what you do for you
• 8:31
Speaker 5: to succeed. And for Robert, he was a straight up
• 8:36
Speaker 5: eyeby and at the time WU was a split back
• 8:40
Speaker 5: mm hmm. So it did not fit him. But nobody
• 8:45
Speaker 5: cared about that. I won't say nobody, but there was
• 8:48
Speaker 5: a lot of people who just loved WVU and.
• 8:52
Speaker 6: They weren't informed, but they didn't understand that, they don't
• 8:56
  Speaker 6: understand the game.
• 8:56
Speaker 5: There you go, they all and again, you can love
• 9:00
Speaker 5: I can love Marshall, but I'm not gonna be mad
• 9:03
Speaker 5: if somebody does not go to Marshall because for whatever
• 9:07
Speaker 5: the reason that they say, see you're not I'm.
• 9:11
Speaker 6: I'm and I'm not see that that. But but what
• 9:14
Speaker 6: I'm trying to explain, I'm not interrupting. I'm just want
• 9:17
Speaker 6: to add this in. I'm trying to explain an overall
• 9:20
Speaker 6: mentality of fans, right, Okay, not every fan. And I'm
• 9:25
Speaker 6: not saying every athlete fits this this mold either, Okay.
• 9:28
Speaker 6: Just want to clarify that that's right.
• 9:30
  Speaker 3: That's right.
• 9:33
Speaker 5: For to to go to w to go to Marshall,
• 9:36
Speaker 5: to go to WU, there has to be something there
• 9:41
Speaker 5: that that particular athlete, that particular athlete's family sees.
• 9:50
Speaker 3: And likes and believes.
• 9:52
Speaker 5: That there can be success, not just athletically, academically socially.
• 9:59
  Speaker 3: The only reason.
• 10:00
Speaker 5: That I went to Marshall and and and let me
• 10:05
Speaker 5: be clear, at that point in time when I when
• 10:08
Speaker 5: I went back to Marshall for a second visit, when
• 10:12
Speaker 5: Sonny Randall became the coach, I went back there.
• 10:17
Speaker 3: That was it. That was my outside of state schools universities.
• 10:24
Speaker 5: I didn't have anything else, So I mean so so
• 10:28
Speaker 5: Marshall was my only big options.
• 10:30
Speaker 6: So so let me ask you this, if you would
• 10:32
Speaker 6: have had other options out outside of West Virginia out
• 10:36
  Speaker 6: of state.
• 10:37
Speaker 7: Would you have explored those over Marshall.
• 10:40
Speaker 5: Or I went to I went, I went to Virginia Tech.
• 10:44
Speaker 5: Initially I went to I went, I went on a visit,
• 10:47
Speaker 5: and I mean, I couldn't help, but like it, you know,
• 10:52
Speaker 5: I'm coming from yeah everything. But then they backed away,
• 10:58
Speaker 5: they backed away, So I ended up, you know, with
• 11:02
Speaker 5: you know, different, like I said, different, West Virginia schools,
• 11:07
Speaker 5: and Sonny Randall ends up getting the job at Marshall
• 11:11
Speaker 5: and invites me back down to come back. Well, first
• 11:15
Speaker 5: thing I hear from him is you know he played
• 11:17
Speaker 5: professional football. I was sold because that was my goal.
• 11:21
Speaker 5: So I'm thinking, this is the guy that can get
• 11:23
Speaker 5: me where I need to go. So I made I
• 11:28
Speaker 5: made the Marshall pick purposefully for me and purposely for
• 11:33
Speaker 5: the guys that was there. And then then fortunately I
• 11:36
Speaker 5: get Bob Pruitt as my dB coach on top of that,
• 11:39
Speaker 5: so I was blessed with a ton of great coaches
• 11:43
  Speaker 5: around me.
• 11:43
Speaker 3: Jimmy Grove was there, you know. I mean so, but
• 11:50
  Speaker 3: I don't know.
• 11:52
Speaker 5: What I don't understand is is like we I believe
• 11:57
Speaker 5: we have great We've had great athletes come through. What
• 12:02
Speaker 5: we haven't had is we haven't had the ability to
• 12:07
Speaker 5: sustain them, happily, treat them in a way that they
• 12:12
  Speaker 5: would want to.
• 12:12
  Speaker 3: Reach back.
• 12:15
Speaker 5: And and and work on these young athletes to help
• 12:18
Speaker 5: them be better, to not to pick that, not to
• 12:22
Speaker 5: pick at school, but to help them understand, you know,
• 12:26
Speaker 5: work with them, whether it's camps or just coming back
• 12:31
Speaker 5: to talk, come back to speak, come back just to
• 12:33
  Speaker 5: be seen.
• 12:36
Speaker 7: I mean, to me, what venues could they use for I.
• 12:40
  Speaker 5: Think that there's a I think that there's a ton
• 12:42
Speaker 5: of opportunities. There's a ton of opportunities that they there's
• 12:47
Speaker 5: and things that they could do, but they won't do
• 12:53
Speaker 5: them because for the most part, they've not been asked.
• 12:59
Speaker 5: They haven't they There's always something that that an athlete,
• 13:05
Speaker 5: a professional athlete or potential professional athlete, the potential college
• 13:08
Speaker 5: athlete does or doesn't do that makes everybody mad in
• 13:12
Speaker 5: West Virginia because they don't do what we want them
• 13:14
  Speaker 5: to do.
• 13:15
Speaker 3: That's unfair, that's unfair to the athlete.
• 13:18
Speaker 5: He or she has to be able to pick the
• 13:21
Speaker 5: school wherever the school is.
• 13:23
Speaker 3: And what we cheer for is that they are West.
• 13:26
  Speaker 7: Virginia's right right.
• 13:29
Speaker 5: And I mean Robert lost all of his basically almost
• 13:31
Speaker 5: all of his fame in West Virginia and West Virginia. Yeah,
• 13:36
Speaker 5: Kurt Warner lost it because he went he went to
• 13:39
Speaker 5: Penn State arrival of w U, and he was still
• 13:43
Speaker 5: went to the league, and he still represented West Virginia
• 13:48
Speaker 5: as a as a West Virginia athlete.
• 13:50
Speaker 6: Right, but he's still he didn't attend a West Virginia school.
• 13:53
Speaker 3: He didn't attend to West goes back to.
• 13:56
Speaker 6: To to what I laid out in the very beginning,
• 13:59
Speaker 6: I think in West Virginia.
• 14:01
Speaker 7: We have these deep I think we have these deep.
• 14:05
Speaker 6: Family connections that I mean, this state is probably one
• 14:10
Speaker 6: of the most devoted family oriented states that I've ever
• 14:16
Speaker 6: witnessed and been a part of and visited in all
• 14:19
Speaker 6: my life. I mean, I think it's just the nature
• 14:21
Speaker 6: of having a smaller population being isolated by the mountains.
• 14:26
Speaker 7: Were very family oriented.
• 14:27
Speaker 6: And I think, like I said before, I think when
• 14:31
Speaker 6: successful coaches or athletes leave for other opportunities, regardless of
• 14:36
Speaker 6: the reason, people view it as a personal betrayal. And
• 14:40
Speaker 6: I'm not saying it's right or wrong. I'm just saying,
• 14:43
Speaker 6: you know, we know it's a professional move. We know
• 14:45
Speaker 6: it's in the best interest of the athlete. Okay, we
• 14:48
Speaker 6: know that talking right now, but some fans, some fan bases,
• 14:52
  Speaker 6: take it personal.
• 14:53
Speaker 7: I mean, look what happened to rich Rod, right and.
• 14:56
Speaker 6: There's still a divided population when you talk about rich
• 14:59
Speaker 6: Rod in this day. There are fans that absolutely to
• 15:01
Speaker 6: this day with him, yes, and he's back, he's our
• 15:07
Speaker 6: head coach right now, and there's people that absolutely will
• 15:10
Speaker 6: not support him ever again. And it blows my mind.
• 15:14
Speaker 6: But I think I think it's just to the ties
• 15:16
Speaker 6: of our culture. And I'm not saying it's right or wrong.
• 15:19
  Speaker 6: I'm just saying I think that's part of what's happening.
• 15:23
  Speaker 3: I think I think.
• 15:26
Speaker 5: I'm going to put this out out to the air,
• 15:29
Speaker 5: and if you choose to say something about it, you're
• 15:31
Speaker 5: more than welcome. I think when it comes down to
• 15:35
Speaker 5: a high school athlete picking a college, I think the
• 15:38
Speaker 5: most important thing in that is that he and his
• 15:43
  Speaker 5: family can.
• 15:46
  Speaker 3: Find a place.
• 15:47
Speaker 5: Assume a place, because you could be wrong, Assume that
• 15:52
Speaker 5: this is going to be a place that I could stay.
• 15:56
  Speaker 3: Participate.
• 15:58
Speaker 6: Maybe back in your day. We know what it's like
• 16:00
Speaker 6: now within ion transfer portal, But but I'm.
• 16:04
Speaker 3: Thinking still mm hmm.
• 16:08
Speaker 5: Money is I get that money is the most important
• 16:11
Speaker 5: kind of thing to you, but I will say this.
• 16:17
Speaker 3: If you if you.
• 16:20
Speaker 5: Just go for the money, that's not necessarily going to
• 16:27
Speaker 5: put you in a spot two play. Mmm.
• 16:34
  Speaker 7: It's just.
• 16:36
Speaker 3: See. I just think that we we we.
• 16:39
Speaker 5: Should be happy that our kids go to a college
• 16:43
Speaker 5: as a student athlete, and we don't care where they go.
• 16:48
Speaker 5: They should be able to go wherever they want and play. Okay,
• 16:53
Speaker 5: And I think I think, however, we and and we
• 16:57
Speaker 5: should and we should cheer. We should cheer for them.
• 17:00
Speaker 5: My losses at Marshall were huge, but I'd like to
• 17:08
Speaker 5: think that that group of fan base that that was
• 17:11
Speaker 5: there when I was there, mm hmm, still would cheer
• 17:16
Speaker 5: for me coming back to Marshall, I would think.
• 17:21
Speaker 7: So, you know, and and let me ask you this.
• 17:24
Speaker 6: So, so you're you've laid out the issues of not
• 17:29
Speaker 6: not being of course, so you've laid out this, Sorry,
• 17:34
Speaker 6: you've laid out the issues of you feel like these
• 17:37
Speaker 6: athletes are not being as respected or or or remembered
• 17:42
Speaker 6: the way that they should be based on their their pastor.
• 17:48
Speaker 7: So so what do we do to remedy it?
• 17:50
  Speaker 3: What?
• 17:51
  Speaker 8: What?
• 17:51
Speaker 6: What are some answers. I think that I think we've
• 17:53
  Speaker 6: laid out problems.
• 17:54
  Speaker 3: I think the number I.
• 17:55
Speaker 5: Think that I think the number one thing is is
• 17:57
Speaker 5: we have to cover these athletes. We have to and
• 18:00
Speaker 5: and and when I say cover them through the media,
• 18:05
Speaker 5: schools try to put out information, but let's not let's
• 18:11
Speaker 5: I'm a Marshall guy. If if a kid decides that
• 18:15
Speaker 5: he's going to go to wv U, oh great, I'm
• 18:19
Speaker 5: not mad at him for going to WVU, you know,
• 18:23
Speaker 5: because I want him to go play. I want him
• 18:26
Speaker 5: to have a future. I want him to have a
• 18:28
Speaker 5: free education because I know the majority of these kids
• 18:32
Speaker 5: do not have the funding to to be able to
• 18:35
Speaker 5: go to college. Right, So if sports is going to
• 18:37
  Speaker 5: be the thing.
• 18:40
Speaker 6: But the rivalry there is pretty pretty deep, but it
• 18:44
Speaker 6: should should not be deeper.
• 18:48
Speaker 5: We should not care where that kid goes to play
• 18:53
Speaker 5: to be a to have a scholarship. If he's got
• 18:55
Speaker 5: opportunities to get scholarships in four or five different schools.
• 18:58
Speaker 3: All of them in West Virginia.
• 19:00
Speaker 5: The accolage of you Marshalls included, if they pick one,
• 19:05
Speaker 5: we should be happy.
• 19:07
  Speaker 3: M M.
• 19:08
  Speaker 8: I can't, I came in, can you.
• 19:13
Speaker 3: Can you hear me? You can't hear me? Are you
• 19:17
Speaker 3: where you got to come back in?
• 19:19
Speaker 6: Matt's got us on the edge of our seats, and
• 19:21
Speaker 6: you want to know what he has to say?
• 19:23
Speaker 7: Here we've got here, he goes, we want to hear
• 19:30
  Speaker 7: all about this?
• 19:31
  Speaker 3: Matt?
• 19:31
Speaker 7: What do you think? What are your thoughts?
• 19:32
  Speaker 9: All? Right?
• 19:33
Speaker 8: So, I think that people in general maybe feel as
• 19:36
Speaker 8: though professional athletes are maybe a bit inaccessible, and not
• 19:40
Speaker 8: because of anything that professional athletes do. I think it's
• 19:45
Speaker 8: just the nature of you know, once you've become an
• 19:47
Speaker 8: NBA player, or an MLB player or an NFL player,
• 19:51
Speaker 8: people just think, why would a professional athlete want to
• 19:55
Speaker 8: come back to their old high school? Why would they
• 19:57
Speaker 8: want to come and talk to my kids in my program.
• 20:00
  Speaker 7: That's a good that's a good view.
• 20:02
Speaker 3: But I got a response to that.
• 20:05
Speaker 7: I got a response to that.
• 20:06
Speaker 3: Okay. So I had reached out to Randy.
• 20:12
Speaker 5: Maybe I don't know, a month or so ago, and
• 20:14
Speaker 5: realized his numbers chanced, So I have no access to him. Okay,
• 20:19
Speaker 5: I could be mad at that, right like I could
• 20:21
Speaker 5: I could make I could try to make.
• 20:23
Speaker 3: The case he changed his number and he didn't give
• 20:25
Speaker 3: it to me. Why would he?
• 20:27
Speaker 5: Why would he have to think to give it to me,
• 20:29
Speaker 5: so I don't have it, So it's that to me, Okay,
• 20:32
Speaker 5: that's okay. But for I think that if anybody else
• 20:35
Speaker 5: was in that situation, they.
• 20:37
Speaker 3: Would probably be mad.
• 20:39
Speaker 5: But Randy doesn't have like the people that he is
• 20:42
Speaker 5: in contact with on a daily basis.
• 20:45
Speaker 3: Are not are not just the open public.
• 20:50
Speaker 5: And unfortunately, because it's he's not in the normal general population.
• 20:59
Speaker 5: Why why is he going to run into that situation and.
• 21:03
Speaker 3: Be, oh, Randy, hey, hey, die hey, Randy give me that?
• 21:06
Speaker 3: Can you give me that? Why would he do that
• 21:08
Speaker 3: to himself if you have that? And I think I.
• 21:12
Speaker 6: Think Randy's very giving. He just does it in a
• 21:15
Speaker 6: private way. He is He's always been private.
• 21:17
  Speaker 3: He is.
• 21:17
Speaker 5: He has done so much for some under the radar,
• 21:21
Speaker 5: different causes that you cannot imagine. Because he is who
• 21:26
Speaker 5: he is. He doesn't need your pat on the back.
• 21:29
Speaker 7: No, he does not, And you're mad.
• 21:31
Speaker 5: Because you want. You would love to pat him on
• 21:35
Speaker 5: the back. You'd love to know what he did. But
• 21:37
Speaker 5: he doesn't feel like he has to do that. And
• 21:39
  Speaker 5: I think that's I think I think that's a good thing.
• 21:42
Speaker 6: And I think on Randy's part, if we're going to
• 21:44
Speaker 6: continue this subject about mister Moss. I think on his part,
• 21:48
Speaker 6: he kind of left West Virginia with a little bit
• 21:50
Speaker 6: of a bitter taste in his mouth, with his high
• 21:53
Speaker 6: school experiences with with law enforcement, with with what happened
• 21:58
Speaker 6: to him at the high school level. You know, although
• 22:01
Speaker 6: Marshall O, you know, welcomed him with open arms and
• 22:05
Speaker 6: he had a great career there. But I think sometimes
• 22:08
Speaker 6: you know that those those earlier memories, you know, when
• 22:11
  Speaker 6: you're growing up, sometimes they're hard, they're tough, they're hard
• 22:14
Speaker 6: to kind of forget, and not that you're holding it
• 22:17
Speaker 6: against anybody, but maybe coming back and being public and
• 22:21
Speaker 6: and interacting with some of those people that he grew
• 22:23
Speaker 6: up with just brings back bad vibes.
• 22:25
Speaker 8: I will say, though, when he was inducted into the
• 22:28
Speaker 8: Hall of Fame, what was the first thing he did
• 22:30
Speaker 8: after all of that in Canton? He came to the
• 22:32
Speaker 8: Charleston Town Center and his gold jacket and he shook
• 22:35
Speaker 8: hands with everybody and he kissed babies.
• 22:38
  Speaker 5: Yeah, and he's a he's a good person. I'm telling you,
• 22:42
Speaker 5: this guy, to me is a wonderful person who has
• 22:49
  Speaker 5: been scarred, has.
• 22:51
Speaker 7: Been scarred making My point is.
• 22:56
Speaker 3: He's trying to be the best version of himself.
• 23:00
  Speaker 4: Mm hmm.
• 23:00
Speaker 5: And Matt to that point, you know, that shows you,
• 23:05
Speaker 5: that proves to you he didn't have there's no reason
• 23:08
Speaker 5: he had to do that.
• 23:10
Speaker 8: It brings up another good point though too. At the
• 23:12
Speaker 8: end of the day, athletes are still humans.
• 23:16
  Speaker 3: Whether you the.
• 23:16
Speaker 8: Girl work in the cashier at McDonald's, or whether you're
• 23:19
Speaker 8: a professional athlete or you're anywhere in between, the fact
• 23:22
Speaker 8: of the matter is everyone still goes through the same
• 23:25
Speaker 8: things as humans, so everybody reacts differently.
• 23:29
Speaker 7: I went, I was gonna just tell you guys.
• 23:30
Speaker 6: I went live on Facebook and Sterling sharp comment and
• 23:33
Speaker 6: he said, true, he is onto something. So he was
• 23:37
Speaker 6: referring to you know, both of you, I think with
• 23:39
Speaker 6: your version of him being you know, having some scars.
• 23:42
Speaker 6: And then you're saying he still came and gave back
• 23:44
Speaker 6: after his Hall of Fame induction, kind of like Sterling
• 23:47
Speaker 6: did with us. So hey, Sterling, but anyway, yeah, I
• 23:51
Speaker 6: just wanted to let you know.
• 23:52
  Speaker 3: Well, and I don't know if I don't know if.
• 23:57
Speaker 5: We can ever get a chance to utilize his overall
• 24:02
Speaker 5: success for an athlete.
• 24:05
Speaker 3: And when I say for an athlete.
• 24:07
Speaker 5: We know a Randy Moss is a is a is
• 24:11
Speaker 5: a once in a lifetime maybe type of talent. But
• 24:16
Speaker 5: even if you have any measurement of skill set in
• 24:21
Speaker 5: any sport or in anything, the example of trying to
• 24:28
Speaker 5: get there athletics is the thing that we used to
• 24:32
Speaker 5: be able to use and say work like that, Like,
• 24:37
Speaker 5: if you work out that hard, if you put in
• 24:39
Speaker 5: the efforts, you're going to have this kind of success.
• 24:42
Speaker 5: And I'll make the case that regardless of how great
• 24:46
Speaker 5: Randy was, naturally the work that he put in, yes
• 24:53
Speaker 5: to be even better. Yea, most people could not even
• 24:57
Speaker 5: fathom it. And again I know for myself, just to
• 25:01
Speaker 5: be able to get there, just to be able to
• 25:03
Speaker 5: be an athlete at that level, to be able to
• 25:05
Speaker 5: be a good athlete at that at the NFL.
• 25:09
Speaker 3: Level, I was sold on working out five days a week,
• 25:16
  Speaker 3: sixteen weeks constantly.
• 25:19
Speaker 7: Complete life. It was complete.
• 25:21
Speaker 3: It was my complete life, you know.
• 25:23
Speaker 5: So when I'm off, when it's off season, I'm spending
• 25:26
Speaker 5: another sixteen weeks to get ready for.
• 25:29
Speaker 3: Four weeks of camp.
• 25:30
Speaker 5: Yeah, And if you're not doing something like that, don't hate.
• 25:38
Speaker 3: Don't hate on guys who have put the work in.
• 25:42
Speaker 7: Yeah, who do you think is hating? I think I
• 25:45
Speaker 7: think that we have I mean just just the athlete.
• 25:49
Speaker 5: No, I think that I think that we some of
• 25:52
Speaker 5: these athletes who have gotten bad raps. And I think
• 25:55
Speaker 5: Randy has gotten a bad roak. And I think, you know,
• 26:00
Speaker 5: he's more than that. He's still He's still an example
• 26:06
Speaker 5: Robert Alexander. He gets he gets hooked on painkillers and
• 26:15
Speaker 5: ends up getting into drugs. I can I can testify
• 26:22
Speaker 5: that he was the guy who was telling me, looking
• 26:24
Speaker 5: me dead in my face and telling me, don't do this,
• 26:27
Speaker 5: don't do that, the things that he ended up doing,
• 26:31
Speaker 5: so I can buy and and and I he told
• 26:33
Speaker 5: me what took place. I know I had a chance
• 26:36
Speaker 5: to talk to him. My career is because of not
• 26:42
Speaker 5: not just because of him, my mom, my dad, my family,
• 26:46
Speaker 5: all that, but his workout routines, his his his confidence
• 26:52
  Speaker 5: in me.
• 26:55
Speaker 7: See what would what would mentor?
• 26:57
Speaker 5: He was a mentor And what we're missing are the mentors.
• 27:01
Speaker 5: Why are we missing the mentors? Because the mentors are
• 27:04
Speaker 5: getting talked about? And how many people do you think
• 27:07
Speaker 5: now that Randy's on on TV on ESPN, how many
• 27:11
Speaker 5: people say like, oh, you know what he's doing really good.
• 27:14
Speaker 3: Yeah, you don't think he was great in football, you know.
• 27:20
Speaker 6: And here's here's another point, and and this is this
• 27:23
Speaker 6: is kind of a I don't want to call anybody
• 27:25
Speaker 6: old in the room, Matt and Carl, but I mean,
• 27:28
Speaker 6: we know with with Tom, the passage of Tom, the
• 27:32
Speaker 6: further we get away from those those great performances, that
• 27:35
Speaker 6: those athletic performances, the less and less they're talked about.
• 27:38
Speaker 6: They're being replaced by the Patrick Mahomes. They're being replaced
• 27:41
Speaker 6: by the you know, uh whoever. The latest name is
• 27:44
Speaker 6: may from from the New England. So it's not so
• 27:49
Speaker 6: much a matter of people being disrespectful or people wanting
• 27:55
Speaker 6: to to, you know, look badly upon these these former
• 27:59
Speaker 6: athletes from West Virginia. It's that they're from a different generation.
• 28:04
Speaker 6: But and it gets forgotten in the in the in
• 28:07
Speaker 6: the nonsense. I guess I don't know how to put it.
• 28:10
Speaker 3: But if you don't think, yes, but I think who.
• 28:17
Speaker 5: These athletes are in what what they should be in
• 28:20
Speaker 5: West Virginia. They're not and they should be. They should be.
• 28:26
Speaker 5: We owe them that they have an opportunity. I mean,
• 28:29
Speaker 5: think about it. We have Randy Moss could possibly be
• 28:34
Speaker 5: the best football player ever. Okay, so and he's from here, right,
• 28:41
Speaker 5: Jason Williams possibly could be one of the best ball
• 28:44
Speaker 5: handlers in the NBA.
• 28:47
Speaker 3: Where's he at from here?
• 28:48
  Speaker 6: Right?
• 28:49
Speaker 3: Like we have we have those.
• 28:51
Speaker 6: People out there, Well, Jason will be here here in May.
• 28:56
Speaker 6: I think he's coming to the dirty game.
• 29:00
Speaker 7: He's going to come back and.
• 29:01
Speaker 6: Do some type of you know, promotion or something. But yeah,
• 29:04
  Speaker 6: he comes back.
• 29:05
Speaker 5: But but what what a So he comes back for
• 29:09
  Speaker 5: things like that.
• 29:10
Speaker 3: He gets like that.
• 29:12
Speaker 7: And I'm like when you go to the vikings and
• 29:14
Speaker 7: do things right, but.
• 29:15
  Speaker 5: I don't feel like, where is he? Where's where's his
• 29:20
  Speaker 5: where's his trophy? Where's his where's his statue? Where's his
• 29:25
  Speaker 5: you know?
• 29:25
Speaker 3: We we don't. It's like we just don't do enough.
• 29:29
Speaker 5: If he's doing that kind of stuff, How should West
• 29:32
Speaker 5: Virginia treat him? Like we should be promoting him to something,
• 29:36
Speaker 5: we should give him a day?
• 29:38
Speaker 7: Or are we are we big enough?
• 29:39
Speaker 6: I mean, do we have a big enough state the
• 29:42
Speaker 6: kind of resources that some of these bigger cities have
• 29:45
Speaker 6: to be able to do the statues, to.
• 29:47
Speaker 7: Tell it, to do the memorial.
• 29:48
Speaker 3: I'll challenge that by saying.
• 29:51
Speaker 5: When you go to Minnesota and you look around and
• 29:55
Speaker 5: you see, you know, you go to the facility and
• 29:58
Speaker 5: you see the purple people, leaders see you know, all
• 30:01
Speaker 5: the different eras of players are celebrated there.
• 30:05
Speaker 3: You you get that.
• 30:06
Speaker 5: And I know we've got a Hall of Fame, and
• 30:08
Speaker 5: I know most of these guys are probably in it.
• 30:11
Speaker 3: But I think, what what bothers me?
• 30:14
Speaker 5: What I feel? And so this is just a feel.
• 30:18
Speaker 5: We don't really respect. We don't give the do that
• 30:23
Speaker 5: a Randy Moss and a Jason Williams actually deserve. We
• 30:27
Speaker 5: think what we give them is enough.
• 30:32
Speaker 7: So what what what what should we do?
• 30:35
  Speaker 9: What?
• 30:35
Speaker 7: What should what should to me?
• 30:36
  Speaker 9: Do?
• 30:37
Speaker 3: What you do to me?
• 30:38
Speaker 5: Like, I'm giving them every possible honor for them, speak
• 30:46
Speaker 5: not just because of them and what they've achieved, but
• 30:49
Speaker 5: for the kid that's going to be looking at it.
• 30:53
Speaker 3: For the kids who dream to be that.
• 30:56
  Speaker 7: M hm.
• 30:57
Speaker 3: And if we don't because if we don't do that,
• 31:01
Speaker 3: we lose we lose it. And you're smiling over there.
• 31:08
Speaker 6: He wanted to clarify that he was agreeing with Mad
• 31:10
Speaker 6: at Night You and that.
• 31:14
Speaker 5: No talking and and and there's not a talk, there's
• 31:16
Speaker 5: not a conversation about it, and and is it because
• 31:19
Speaker 5: we don't want too many statues or we we to me,
• 31:24
Speaker 5: when you when you try to, if you try to
• 31:26
Speaker 5: compare my career in the NFL versus Randy's career in
• 31:30
  Speaker 5: the NFL versus Pennington's career, I think that's wrong. I
• 31:34
Speaker 5: think I think success is to get there and and
• 31:39
Speaker 5: to me, I think it's deserving two to give to
• 31:45
Speaker 5: give us an opportunity to be a legitimate role model,
• 31:51
Speaker 5: and and and and something so that a so a
• 31:56
Speaker 5: child could see. Man, we had some players, we we've
• 32:00
Speaker 5: had some talented players, but we can't we can't.
• 32:05
Speaker 3: We can't find that, like you can't find that here,
• 32:09
Speaker 3: you know. So let's take it break. Oh oh no,
• 32:15
Speaker 3: all right, I did, and we'll be right back.

Speaker 4: probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker. Real Talk, real experience,
• 33:33
Speaker 4: real results, Frank Walker Law dot com. Let that conversation
• 33:37
Speaker 4: begin on Let's Talk.
• 33:40
  Speaker 3: Ladies and Gentlemen.
• 33:41
Speaker 5: I had mentioned a name earlier in the show, and
• 33:47
Speaker 5: for some odd reason, that person has called into the show.
• 33:54
Speaker 5: I think this is this is actually a little bit aggressive,
• 33:57
  Speaker 5: and I feel I feel like I don't keep I
• 34:00
Speaker 5: feel attacked and feel like this person is trying to
• 34:03
Speaker 5: take over my show. But we have Sterling shop has
• 34:07
Speaker 5: called in for some odd reason. I have no idea
• 34:10
Speaker 5: where this is gonna go. So let's just say hello.
• 34:13
  Speaker 3: Sterly.
• 34:16
Speaker 9: Boy, y'all be glad, y'all got me? Oh boy, what
• 34:24
  Speaker 9: do you want?
• 34:25
  Speaker 3: Man?
• 34:25
  Speaker 11: You know what?
• 34:27
  Speaker 6: Man?
• 34:27
Speaker 9: You guys are have hit on something that is really,
• 34:30
Speaker 9: really a good subject to talk about. And I think
• 34:33
Speaker 9: it's want versus need. And when you talk about recognizing
• 34:38
Speaker 9: the players from where you're from and putting them, I
• 34:43
Speaker 9: think what happens sometimes is we get confused with want
• 34:48
  Speaker 9: me Carl, I'm I'm gonna speak, I'm gonna speak a
• 34:51
Speaker 9: little bit for and I'm gonna I'm gonna use my
• 34:55
Speaker 9: brother and I My brother always wanted to be here.
• 34:58
Speaker 9: He always wanted to be a voice, a big voice.
• 35:02
Speaker 9: He always had something to say. He always wanted to
• 35:05
Speaker 9: be out front. I was different. And when the city
• 35:10
Speaker 9: of Glenville, which is where we're from, when they recognized
• 35:13
Speaker 9: him with the parade and all of that, it was great.
• 35:19
Speaker 9: He was the first, you know, hall of famer that
• 35:21
Speaker 9: he was great. I was different and didn't need or
• 35:26
Speaker 9: want it. And so I think when we look at athletes,
• 35:31
Speaker 9: we sometimes missed the boat on need and want. There
• 35:35
Speaker 9: are some athletes that then, Carl, I'll say it. There
• 35:39
Speaker 9: are some athletes, Carl, that we know that need their
• 35:41
Speaker 9: egos fed. There are some athletes that don't want it.
• 35:46
Speaker 9: They're like, guess what, man, I'm from here, but I
• 35:49
Speaker 9: live over here and I'm growing over here. I wish
• 35:53
Speaker 9: I could have done a little bit more from where
• 35:56
Speaker 9: I was from, but I ended up doing more where
• 35:59
Speaker 9: I was planning. So it is a man. You guys
• 36:04
Speaker 9: made some really good points, but I you know, and
• 36:07
Speaker 9: I know Randy a kind of well and outstanding individual.
• 36:13
Speaker 9: But the thing is that you can't you know what
• 36:15
Speaker 9: I love is and how we were raised. Everything you
• 36:19
Speaker 9: do goes home. So when Randy was doing when he
• 36:24
Speaker 9: was whatever happened to him in high school was at home.
• 36:28
Speaker 9: But when you look at when he left everything, man,
• 36:32
Speaker 9: the hey West Virginia got to grow, they got to love,
• 36:35
Speaker 9: they got to say that's our And I think for Randy,
• 36:40
Speaker 9: that's enough. I think you know, there comes and you
• 36:44
Speaker 9: and and I'm going to say this because I got
• 36:46
Speaker 9: a lot of friends who are like this. When you
• 36:49
Speaker 9: need your ego fed, you will find yourself saying that.
• 36:53
Speaker 9: You know, Charleston ain't doing enough for me coming out
• 36:56
Speaker 9: of there. You know, I was the first round draft pick.
• 36:59
Speaker 9: I would the seventh round or twelfth round or free
• 37:02
Speaker 9: agent or so. They need to recognize me. You know.
• 37:08
Speaker 9: It's so funny, man, being in this position, and you know,
• 37:11
Speaker 9: with the Pro Football Hall of Fame granting me this
• 37:14
Speaker 9: honor car I was the first game cop the University
• 37:18
Speaker 9: of South Carolina game cop to go in. I'm one
• 37:21
Speaker 9: half of the first brothers to go in. And what's
• 37:24
Speaker 9: really cool is is I got advantage point that a
• 37:26
Speaker 9: lot of people don't have. Is I got a guy
• 37:28
Speaker 9: who is in justifiably so that wanted it. I will
• 37:32
Speaker 9: go out on a limit and say he needed it.
• 37:34
Speaker 9: And then you got another guy that's in that was like,
• 37:36
Speaker 9: oh my god, I don't want any parts of this.
• 37:38
  Speaker 9: I don't want what it brings. I don't want what
• 37:40
Speaker 9: it looks like. Man, I was minding my business playing golf.
• 37:44
Speaker 9: Y'all bothered me with this Hall of Fame else, you know,
• 37:50
Speaker 9: and I thought that that go ahead.
• 37:52
Speaker 5: And to your point, you know, Randy did not need
• 37:57
Speaker 5: any merit to to justify his abilities and whearing what
• 38:05
Speaker 5: he was going to be. I get I get that
• 38:09
Speaker 5: but for me, hearing some of the things that were
• 38:14
Speaker 5: being said some of the people who were just basically
• 38:18
Speaker 5: just hating, it made no sense to me.
• 38:22
Speaker 3: Bruh like it was like.
• 38:24
Speaker 9: But you you also have to understand there are a
• 38:27
Speaker 9: lot of people out there who thought that Bob Kraft
• 38:30
Speaker 9: and Bill Belichick should have been first ballot Hall of Famers.
• 38:34
Speaker 9: They can't tell you one thing about how the Hall
• 38:38
Speaker 9: of Fame does their business right, but they may up there.
• 38:42
Speaker 9: I'll go out on the list. Randy Moss himself said
• 38:46
Speaker 9: on national television that he believes if you didn't coach,
• 38:51
Speaker 9: or were GM, or were a player, you shouldn't have
• 38:55
Speaker 9: a vote. When you and I had this conversation with
• 38:58
Speaker 9: you when we voted for the I never voted for
• 39:01
Speaker 9: an offensive player for the Pro Bowl because I never
• 39:04
Speaker 9: saw them. I was looking at defensive players, d line, linebacker,
• 39:08
Speaker 9: safety is in corners. So if you, if me, as
• 39:11
Speaker 9: a Hall of Famer, got to vote, I can tell
• 39:13
Speaker 9: you I'm getting ready to screw this thing up. I'm
• 39:16
Speaker 9: getting ready because because I can't tell you how good
• 39:22
Speaker 9: Chris Hard was, I have no idea how good Andre
• 39:26
Speaker 9: Reed or Kim Brown or Jerry Right or Michael Irvin,
• 39:29
Speaker 9: the guys that are in the Hall of Fame that
• 39:31
Speaker 9: played in my era, because I never saw them. What
• 39:35
Speaker 9: I saw was their defense. So you know, you have
• 39:40
Speaker 9: to understand too. I mean, I lived twenty some odd
• 39:43
Speaker 9: miles from my school. I've never been back from the
• 39:47
Speaker 9: University of South Carolina. I've never been back. I've only
• 39:51
Speaker 9: been back to Glenville High School when my brother was playing.
• 39:55
Speaker 9: I've only been back to Green Bay to get my
• 39:58
Speaker 9: Hall of Fame ring. I don't have a grudge against
• 40:02
Speaker 9: any of it. It's just that some of us aren't
• 40:05
Speaker 9: built that way to where And you know what, man,
• 40:08
Speaker 9: Deebo Samuels got to have a great career without me
• 40:11
Speaker 9: hovering around and trying to keep him or wanting to
• 40:13
Speaker 9: keep him in my shadow. Sidney Rice is a game cop.
• 40:17
Speaker 9: Al Sean Jeffery is a game cop. The late Kenny
• 40:20
Speaker 9: McKinley is a game cop. They got to have their
• 40:24
Speaker 9: own time, just like the players at Glenville High School
• 40:27
Speaker 9: got to have their own time. Just like Christian Watson
• 40:30
Speaker 9: in Green Bay right now gets to have his own
• 40:32
Speaker 9: time because I'm not there trying to hang around and
• 40:36
Speaker 9: at least so eloquently put it. I haven't played football
• 40:41
Speaker 9: in thirty some years. So there's some dads that may
• 40:45
Speaker 9: have seen me play when they were nine, ten, eleven,
• 40:48
Speaker 9: but there are a lot of kids in high school
• 40:50
Speaker 9: that didn't. And I don't need that to Hey, guess what, man,
• 40:54
Speaker 9: Let those guys have their time, because I've gotten all
• 40:58
Speaker 9: I'm supposed to get, I believe, from my NFL, from
• 41:01
Speaker 9: my college and high school career.
• 41:03
Speaker 5: Okay, and again let me let me, let me hit
• 41:06
Speaker 5: you with this, and I get all that, and I'm
• 41:09
Speaker 5: one hundred percent with you. I look at West when
• 41:13
Speaker 5: I think about West Virginia, and again I think about
• 41:15
Speaker 5: me as being that kid watching at a great high school,
• 41:21
Speaker 5: great college athlete, not knowing he would that he would
• 41:24
Speaker 5: go to the pros. But I'm looking at this guy
• 41:27
Speaker 5: and he's talking to me and telling me these things
• 41:30
Speaker 5: of what I must do and how I must do it,
• 41:34
Speaker 5: and I'm like thinking, And then when he he gets
• 41:37
Speaker 5: to the pros, I'm like thinking, Man, that's the greatest
• 41:43
Speaker 5: achievement in the world. And I don't know anybody else
• 41:48
Speaker 5: like that. Like so, when when when Robert went When
• 41:51
Speaker 5: when Robert Alexander went.
• 41:53
  Speaker 3: To the league.
• 41:55
  Speaker 5: I don't think I did not know a National Football
• 41:59
  Speaker 5: League player.
• 42:02
Speaker 3: Like I knew him.
• 42:03
Speaker 5: This, this NFL player, current NFL player that at that
• 42:07
  Speaker 5: moment is.
• 42:08
Speaker 3: Still talking to me.
• 42:10
Speaker 5: He's still sitting in my mom's living room getting my
• 42:13
Speaker 5: sister to braid his hair. And I'm like thinking, brother,
• 42:16
Speaker 5: that's the greatest thing ever. And I want to be
• 42:20
Speaker 5: like that. And and I and I and I truly
• 42:24
Speaker 5: believe like in in this state, we do need we
• 42:30
Speaker 5: do need leadership, we do need encouragement because we we
• 42:36
Speaker 5: we sit here and we dream of something and and
• 42:41
Speaker 5: we don't but we don't know how to actually get it.
• 42:44
Speaker 5: We don't know how to put the work in to
• 42:45
Speaker 5: get it because no one's there.
• 42:50
Speaker 3: There's nobody there that could help.
• 42:52
Speaker 9: Let me, let me jump in. I'm from I'm from
• 42:55
Speaker 9: a smaller town than in Charleston and Glennville, Georgia. They
• 42:58
Speaker 9: have two pro football players in the Pro Football Hall
• 43:02
Speaker 9: of Fame. But the thing is, I think you have
• 43:06
Speaker 9: to be careful about pushing that agenda because it's like
• 43:10
Speaker 9: Lisa said, if I go back to my well, first
• 43:13
Speaker 9: of all, my high school is combined with another high school,
• 43:16
Speaker 9: so it ain't even there. But when I go back home,
• 43:19
Speaker 9: there's a lot of kids who look at me and
• 43:24
Speaker 9: they don't say anything because they really don't know how.
• 43:28
Speaker 9: There's a lot of parents because I'm from rural South Georgia.
• 43:31
Speaker 9: Let me excuse me, We're from rural South Georgia. There's
• 43:34
Speaker 9: a lot of parents that I or grandparents that I
• 43:37
Speaker 9: played with in high school that have told the stories
• 43:40
Speaker 9: about how bad me and Shanna Num boys were bad.
• 43:44
Speaker 9: I'm not gonna say, I'm not going to say embarrassed.
• 43:47
Speaker 9: But here I am telling somebody in my household to
• 43:51
Speaker 9: listen to what that guy is saying. Who doesn't live
• 43:55
Speaker 9: in Glenville anymore, who comes to Glenville once or twice
• 43:59
Speaker 9: a month to see it sister and some of his
• 44:01
Speaker 9: other family, and then he's out. It's a very fine line.
• 44:06
Speaker 9: My brothers used to say it all the time. My
• 44:09
Speaker 9: brother used to say because of him, saying because of me,
• 44:12
Speaker 9: I never had to look past my own dinner table.
• 44:15
Speaker 9: Because of him, I got a chance to see the road,
• 44:19
Speaker 9: and the road was easy for me because I saw
• 44:22
Speaker 9: him do it. But I saw him every day. I
• 44:24
Speaker 9: listened to him every day, I watched him every day.
• 44:27
Speaker 9: I talk to him every day. We don't have to
• 44:31
Speaker 9: be real. We have to be and we as quote
• 44:34
Speaker 9: unquote stars, we got to be very careful because you
• 44:39
Speaker 9: can say the wrong words and the wrong phrases and
• 44:42
Speaker 9: the wrong setup and you come off as arrogant, where
• 44:46
Speaker 9: you come off as unapproachable. So it's a fine line.
• 44:49
Speaker 9: It's a very fine line to ask a community to see.
• 44:54
Speaker 9: And I will compare it this way. It's very difficult
• 44:57
Speaker 9: for me to be upset to Bill Belichi and Robert
• 45:01
Speaker 9: Kraft are not first ballot Hall of Famers when one,
• 45:04
Speaker 9: I don't know what the criteria is, and more importantly,
• 45:07
Speaker 9: I don't know how the voters looked at their career.
• 45:11
Speaker 9: I can't be mad that my brother wasn't the first
• 45:15
Speaker 9: ballot Hall of Famer because the voters at that time
• 45:18
Speaker 9: didn't see his career the way he did. I can't
• 45:21
Speaker 9: be mad that they looked at Tarol Owen's career and
• 45:24
Speaker 9: he wasn't the first ballot Hall of Famer and have
• 45:26
Speaker 9: Tarrell upset because they didn't see Terrell's career the way
• 45:30
Speaker 9: Carroll saw. See, that's the fine line that we got
• 45:34
Speaker 9: to watch. See. I don't know what the Hall of
• 45:36
Speaker 9: Fame criteria is. It's not called the NFL Hall of Famer.
• 45:39
Speaker 9: It's the Pro football and they have their own set
• 45:43
Speaker 9: of bylaws and how they do business. Who's to say
• 45:48
Speaker 9: that they are wrong in their approach. There's a lot
• 45:51
Speaker 9: of friends that I live very close to that voted
• 45:55
Speaker 9: for a certain guy that we have discussions about. I
• 45:58
Speaker 9: can't be mad because they see our country one way
• 46:02
Speaker 9: and I see our country another. I can't be mad
• 46:04
Speaker 9: at that. We can have discussions and we may even disagree,
• 46:08
Speaker 9: but I can't be mad at them because they went
• 46:10
Speaker 9: that way and didn't go to waste I wanted them
• 46:13
Speaker 9: to go or I feel like they should have done.
• 46:16
Speaker 9: I think we have to be very careful when it
• 46:19
Speaker 9: comes to athletes because we are we're the most scrutinized,
• 46:24
Speaker 9: and we are also because if I tell Glennville that
• 46:28
Speaker 9: they need to put statues up of me and shut
• 46:30
Speaker 9: in America, you see. So we have to be careful.
• 46:35
Speaker 9: And you've known me longer than anybody in Charleston, West Virginia.
• 46:38
Speaker 9: Bro I craned yet recognition. I'm like, oh no, no, please,
• 46:43
Speaker 9: it's not that spot light over there, because I don't
• 46:45
Speaker 9: want any parts of it. But there are some athletes
• 46:48
Speaker 9: that need that there are some people that I mean,
• 46:51
Speaker 9: I was extremely happy with the seven years I put
• 46:54
Speaker 9: off them. There are people that play sixteen years that
• 46:57
Speaker 9: are still upset that people don't give them the recognition
• 47:00
Speaker 9: they deserve. Whoster who's right and who's wrong. So it's
• 47:04
Speaker 9: really difficult to get that person in or to ask
• 47:06
Speaker 9: that person, or I'll say, demand that person to come
• 47:10
Speaker 9: back and hey, we want to recognize you, or we
• 47:14
Speaker 9: need you to lead our other young gents, young girls.
• 47:17
Speaker 9: We need you to lead them into what we think
• 47:21
Speaker 9: is successful. I wasn't successful because I played football.
• 47:25
Speaker 3: Let me let me ask you.
• 47:26
Speaker 9: I wanted to play and I got to play.
• 47:28
Speaker 6: Let me ask you to interrupt Carl, because Carl's hogging
• 47:31
Speaker 6: up all the time with you stolen and not giving
• 47:33
Speaker 6: me any minute. I just want to say thank you
• 47:35
Speaker 6: for giving me credit. I mean, I'm going to remind
• 47:37
Speaker 6: Carl of this, probably on a buy weekly maybe weekly basis.
• 47:42
Speaker 11: And she will be I think you and Lisa, I
• 47:46
Speaker 11: think you and Matt should be hoping that calendar.
• 47:52
Speaker 6: Please write that down somewhere next time I get fired.
• 47:56
  Speaker 3: That's the commercial.
• 47:57
Speaker 5: She's not gonna be here next week, so you you calling.
• 48:04
  Speaker 9: I'm gonna take.
• 48:09
Speaker 3: You've got the phone number?
• 48:10
  Speaker 7: Now walking papers?
• 48:14
Speaker 5: I want to, I want to, I want to ask
• 48:16
Speaker 5: you a question. Okay, So when for me personally? Okay,
• 48:24
Speaker 5: Like I I truly, I truly understand and feel very
• 48:29
  Speaker 5: comfortable in.
• 48:33
Speaker 3: My space, Like I feel like I've gotten.
• 48:38
Speaker 5: All the honors that are due to me where I'm
• 48:43
Speaker 5: at at this point? When you when you think of
• 48:49
Speaker 5: when you think of players and and and what you
• 48:55
Speaker 5: see of them. And I'm not really asking what you
• 48:58
Speaker 5: see in me, but how do you decide, like when
• 49:03
Speaker 5: you're looking at another player that you've played against, you
• 49:06
Speaker 5: you've been around, how do you how do you get
• 49:10
Speaker 5: rid of that side of it and just find the
• 49:13
Speaker 5: skill set side of it?
• 49:14
Speaker 3: If that makes sense?
• 49:17
Speaker 9: It's rich. You know, for me, you have a job
• 49:20
Speaker 9: to do. And if I understand the job of the
• 49:22
Speaker 9: corner in the run game, you don't want anybody outside
• 49:26
Speaker 9: your right or left depending on the side you play,
• 49:28
Speaker 9: you don't want anybody behind you. And if somebody catches
• 49:32
Speaker 9: or makes a run you, you do everything you can
• 49:34
Speaker 9: and get them on the ground. When I look at that,
• 49:38
Speaker 9: I can decipher between the player and the excitement. I'm
• 49:43
Speaker 9: not taking any Hey, I think my Deon Sanders is
• 49:46
Speaker 9: one of the more tremendous corners. But I look at
• 49:50
Speaker 9: great and I say, there was some deficiencies that you
• 49:55
Speaker 9: talked about. You know, I look at players, and when
• 49:59
Speaker 9: I look look at the skill set, I'm like, as
• 50:01
Speaker 9: a corner, you don't you know. I think Darrell Reeves,
• 50:05
Speaker 9: I think Anias Williams, I think Carl Lee. Well, why
• 50:08
Speaker 9: would you add Carl Lee in that mixed When I
• 50:10
Speaker 9: came in the league, Carl Lee didn't even go to
• 50:12
Speaker 9: the hull. He just stood out there because he was like,
• 50:15
Speaker 9: I don't care what the call is. I got you,
• 50:17
Speaker 9: and I'm gonna make it to the Pro Bowl, or
• 50:20
Speaker 9: I'm gonna be an All Pro, or I'm going to
• 50:22
Speaker 9: get a contract extension and more money based on what
• 50:26
Speaker 9: I do or allow you to do. So I have
• 50:30
Speaker 9: the ability to look at a guy and be like,
• 50:32
Speaker 9: you know what, And I say this all the time.
• 50:35
Speaker 9: Two of the corners that I played against that don't
• 50:37
Speaker 9: get the credit they deserve Ricky Reynolds in Tampa and
• 50:41
Speaker 9: Darryl Griffin and San Francisco Don Grick excuse me in
• 50:44
Speaker 9: San Francisco. But I'm looking at them, they say, well,
• 50:49
Speaker 9: two are the best corners? Who was the best corner
• 50:50
Speaker 9: you played against? That's hard to say because I wasn't
• 50:53
Speaker 9: looking at him like that. I was looking at how
• 50:55
Speaker 9: can I sneak and get a catch or grab a
• 50:58
Speaker 9: your herd gip over. God, you definitely see that, you know, Carl.
• 51:11
Speaker 9: The thing is is we have to and I say we,
• 51:16
Speaker 9: I'm not going to have a conversation about who is
• 51:19
Speaker 9: the best receiver? Is Randy de Goat? Is Jerry to
• 51:22
Speaker 9: Goat is too to go Well, first of all, I
• 51:24
Speaker 9: played the position, so I recused myself from asking. You know,
• 51:28
Speaker 9: and I think what we do is is we we
• 51:30
Speaker 9: have an opinion and then we get angered or upset
• 51:34
Speaker 9: when you don't agree with my You don't you know?
• 51:39
Speaker 9: My brother, My brother was heartbroken that he wasn't the
• 51:42
Speaker 9: first ballot Hall of Famer. And I was with him
• 51:45
Speaker 9: when he got the call that says he didn't get
• 51:47
Speaker 9: in because that's how they used to do it, uh,
• 51:50
Speaker 9: And he was heartbroken. And I said, you're upset that
• 51:54
Speaker 9: a group of people that you don't even know didn't
• 51:57
Speaker 9: see your career the way you saw because and I'm
• 52:02
Speaker 9: going to use the phrase that everybody that's in the
• 52:04
Speaker 9: Hall of Fame has said, and Carl, I'm sure you
• 52:06
Speaker 9: heard it. The Pro Football Hall of Fame is like
• 52:09
Speaker 9: being in heaven. Now do I need to be the
• 52:13
Speaker 9: least in heaven? Or do I need to be the most?
• 52:16
Speaker 9: Or do I just need he And so if i'm
• 52:25
Speaker 9: if i'm you know, it's like that old church, don't
• 52:28
Speaker 9: we used to sing, I'm glad to be in the number,
• 52:31
Speaker 9: that's all. I'm just glad to be there. And I
• 52:33
Speaker 9: think we get caught up with you know, who's the
• 52:35
Speaker 9: greatest Lebron or Michael, Who's the go Randy t O,
• 52:40
Speaker 9: Larry Fitzgerald or Jerry Right. I think we get caught
• 52:43
Speaker 9: up in that, and we we moved the gold posters
• 52:46
Speaker 9: athletes so much. And all you have to do is
• 52:48
Speaker 9: you listen to some Hall of Fame speeches, or you
• 52:51
Speaker 9: listen to guys. Paul, I will invite Lisa to come
• 52:54
Speaker 9: in and speak to my class, and I'm gonna read
• 52:57
Speaker 9: off a list of her accomplishments. You know what she
• 52:59
Speaker 9: gonna do. She gonna want up my accomplishments to let
• 53:02
Speaker 9: you know she did some other stuff. You know, right here,
• 53:06
Speaker 9: you don't have to exalt yourself. We've already done that.
• 53:11
Speaker 9: But that's what we do as athletes. You have to
• 53:15
Speaker 9: be careful because I can come in and talk to
• 53:18
Speaker 9: your community or your country club or your school, and
• 53:21
Speaker 9: I can make me seem untouchable. And I can also
• 53:26
Speaker 9: come in and tell you the truth. Hey, look, if
• 53:29
Speaker 9: two little black boys from Glenville, Georgia that didn't have
• 53:32
Speaker 9: running didn't live in a house with running water, says
• 53:34
Speaker 9: nineteen eighty eight, guess what you can get there. Here's
• 53:37
Speaker 9: how everybody in your life is in your life to
• 53:41
Speaker 9: help you get to where you want to go. Now,
• 53:44
Speaker 9: there are some things you gotta do. But for the
• 53:47
Speaker 9: most part, if you pick a dream or a goal,
• 53:50
Speaker 9: and I always say a dream is a gift you
• 53:52
Speaker 9: give to yourself. If you pick that and you stay
• 53:55
Speaker 9: on the path, you'll be shocked at the number of people.
• 53:58
Speaker 9: I met Carl Lee playing against it. He's one of
• 54:01
Speaker 9: my best friends. Well, how did that work out? I said,
• 54:04
Speaker 9: We didn't slack off each other at the jersey.
• 54:08
  Speaker 5: There's no question I'm thinking I'm getting a little more
• 54:11
Speaker 5: mad because you called me, and I remember that you
• 54:14
Speaker 5: did for my jersey.
• 54:16
Speaker 3: We might be losing a friendship because you called it.
• 54:20
Speaker 9: But but you know what, we always come back together.
• 54:24
Speaker 9: We always come back together thing, man, And I tell
• 54:28
Speaker 9: people all the time. Matt Lafleur, the head coach of
• 54:32
Speaker 9: the Green Bay Packers, says, Man, I really want you
• 54:34
Speaker 9: to come and talk to the team, really want you to.
• 54:37
Speaker 9: And I'm saying to myself.
• 54:38
  Speaker 3: Do youse?
• 54:39
Speaker 9: Guys went through high school, went through college and are
• 54:43
Speaker 9: in the NFL without me, And I said, Man, I
• 54:47
Speaker 9: would I cringe because I'm like, what do you want
• 54:51
Speaker 9: me to tell them? Because guess what they're doing exactly
• 54:55
  Speaker 9: what I did. I don't know if they're doing it
• 54:58
Speaker 9: like I did it, but they are. They're in, they're
• 55:02
Speaker 9: they're part of the best football players in the world.
• 55:06
Speaker 9: And you want me to come in and do I said,
• 55:08
Speaker 9: because you know I got some friends in that locker
• 55:10
Speaker 9: room and Christian Watson and Jordan Love you going to
• 55:13
Speaker 9: have me come in and have them thinking this need
• 55:16
Speaker 9: grow here? Think he better than that? And I don't
• 55:19
Speaker 9: want I want I want. I want them to continue
• 55:24
Speaker 9: to grow on their path, their way because here's the
• 55:27
Speaker 9: epty bottom line. And Carl, you and I had this
• 55:30
Speaker 9: conversation a week or so ago about what's for you.
• 55:34
Speaker 9: I don't care what anybody does or says. You're gonna
• 55:36
Speaker 9: get it. And if it's for me, if it's for
• 55:40
Speaker 9: me to come to Charleston and talk to the community center,
• 55:43
Speaker 9: it's going to happen. And there's nothing no one can
• 55:45
Speaker 9: do about it. And I don't know how many people
• 55:49
Speaker 9: are going to be touched or I told you, I
• 55:52
Speaker 9: see people all the time that was like, Man, I
• 55:53
Speaker 9: went to your football camp, and the one thing I
• 55:56
Speaker 9: learned was this, if I really want to do something,
• 55:59
Speaker 9: I better be committed. I better be because you your football
• 56:03
Speaker 9: game was the hardest thing I ever did, but it
• 56:05
Speaker 9: was the best thing I ever did. And I said
• 56:08
Speaker 9: I did it on purpose. I made it. I tried
• 56:10
Speaker 9: to make it unbearable because I didn't want rit rapping
• 56:13
Speaker 9: my sport. I didn't want you to accidentally fall into
• 56:17
  Speaker 9: the NFL.
• 56:18
Speaker 5: And yeah, yeah, players are are former players are very
• 56:22
Speaker 5: particular when it comes to who gets in and who
• 56:27
Speaker 5: gets some props because you got to earn those props
• 56:32
Speaker 5: because we had to earn them.
• 56:34
Speaker 9: I agree, I agree. And the thing is is I
• 56:38
Speaker 9: can't hold you accountable in today's game like I would
• 56:41
Speaker 9: hold a Jerry Rice or Michael Irvin or Andre Reid
• 56:45
Speaker 9: or Chris Carter in yesterday's game. That's unfair to them.
• 56:49
Speaker 6: And I really liked the way Sterling you you came
• 56:51
Speaker 6: full circle in about the individual and some have, you know,
• 56:56
Speaker 6: the need to be recognized and others don't. And and
• 57:00
Speaker 6: what you also said about what's meant for you what happened,
• 57:04
Speaker 6: And so people have to kind of instead of judging
• 57:08
Speaker 6: these athletes for not coming back or not doing whatever
• 57:12
Speaker 6: they think they should be doing, they need to understand
• 57:15
Speaker 6: that that's their individual preference and it's nothing for or
• 57:19
Speaker 6: against where they grew up.
• 57:20
Speaker 7: It's just the way they are.
• 57:22
Speaker 9: It's just what they No one in Lisa, No one
• 57:26
Speaker 9: in my family had gone to college. What made me
• 57:28
Speaker 9: think I could go? No one in my family had
• 57:31
Speaker 9: played college sports? What made me think I could do it?
• 57:34
Speaker 9: No one in my family graduated from college? What made
• 57:37
Speaker 9: me think I could do it? What made me think
• 57:40
Speaker 9: was is you can do anything that you put your
• 57:43
Speaker 9: mind to, and if you pay attention, everyone in your
• 57:47
Speaker 9: life is in your life to help you achieve that goal.
• 57:52
Speaker 9: Because the life of you living son you want to
• 57:54
Speaker 9: go play in the NFL, that an't about you. You
• 57:56
Speaker 9: never know who's watching you. And I've always said this
• 58:00
Speaker 9: because it was said to us. If you have to
• 58:02
Speaker 9: tell someone what you did, then you probably didn't do anything.
• 58:10
Speaker 9: A lot but a lot of people will tell you
• 58:14
Speaker 9: how good they were. A lot of people will And
• 58:17
Speaker 9: I'm like, well, if you're telling me, then I guess
• 58:20
Speaker 9: that must be so if you tell you. But but
• 58:25
Speaker 9: most people, most people, and I say this to parents
• 58:29
Speaker 9: all the time, do not allow me to take your place.
• 58:34
Speaker 9: Do not slide me in front of your kids to
• 58:36
Speaker 9: take your place, because at some point you may be
• 58:42
Speaker 9: disappointed on that ring of or in that stage where
• 58:46
Speaker 9: they getting to thank all the people that helped them
• 58:48
Speaker 9: get there, and you ain't first, second, or third or
• 58:50
Speaker 9: fifth tell you what it hurts. And you know the
• 58:55
Speaker 9: thing is, and I'm telling this last story. I'm gonna
• 58:58
Speaker 9: let you guys talk. And I was on my journey
• 59:01
Speaker 9: to the NFL. It wasn't important for my family to
• 59:04
Speaker 9: come see me play. They didn't understand what it was football. Man,
• 59:08
Speaker 9: I'm not going to sit no stands and watch you
• 59:10
Speaker 9: run up and down and chase the ball because they
• 59:12
Speaker 9: didn't understand it. But then when my brother started to play,
• 59:18
Speaker 9: they understood it better. So here I am in the
• 59:21
Speaker 9: University of South Carolina and I'm going out doing my
• 59:24
Speaker 9: thing because it's what I wanted to do. And my family,
• 59:27
Speaker 9: being an hour from Savannah, was at Savannah State every
• 59:30
Speaker 9: weekend watching him play. Now, if I was like, if
• 59:36
Speaker 9: I was normal, I would be upset at my family
• 59:39
Speaker 9: for doing that. But it wasn't their dream. I was
• 59:43
Speaker 9: fulfilling mind. So whether you participated or you didn't, that
• 59:48
Speaker 9: didn't bother me because I was on the path I
• 59:51
Speaker 9: wanted to be on. And when I got in the
• 59:54
Speaker 9: league and I got to play against the Carl LEAs
• 59:58
Speaker 9: and the Ike Hoats and Hanford dixons in, the Frank
• 1:00:01
Speaker 9: Manifield and the Albert lewis Is and the Kevin Rosses
• 1:00:04
Speaker 9: that played straight up zero help, bump and run. I
• 1:00:08
Speaker 9: got to learn and develop. And then as the league
• 1:00:11
Speaker 9: started to change, Carl and I getting to a Pro Bowl,
• 1:00:15
Speaker 9: We're hanging out together. I'm getting to know his family,
• 1:00:17
Speaker 9: getting to know mine. U Carl and I getting I'm
• 1:00:21
Speaker 9: coming to his football stuff. You coming to mind, so
• 1:00:24
Speaker 9: you get a chance to develop. And it's funny, he
• 1:00:27
Speaker 9: and I are a lot of light. I'm a lot small.
• 1:00:35
Speaker 3: That is not I don't know where that'll get cut out, Lisa.
• 1:00:42
  Speaker 3: We're both getting I.
• 1:00:44
Speaker 6: Think so, except I think they're going to change the
• 1:00:46
Speaker 6: name of the podcast to Let's Talk with Sterling.
• 1:00:49
Speaker 3: Sure, I think so.
• 1:00:53
Speaker 9: I can tell you. I can tell you who's not
• 1:00:54
  Speaker 9: gonna be on.
• 1:00:57
Speaker 5: We're not gonna have before we get out of here.
• 1:01:02
Speaker 3: We are we are, I don't know. We are hanging
• 1:01:06
  Speaker 3: with you.
• 1:01:08
Speaker 5: So just so you know, you, all the listeners who
• 1:01:11
Speaker 5: stayed this long with us, we are hanging up on
• 1:01:14
Speaker 5: a Hall of Fame player like that.
• 1:01:23
Speaker 3: Love you boy, I'll see you later, all right, man,
