- 0:00What's up, dog?
- 0:02>> Hi. Nothing much. How are you?
- 0:03>> I'm good. Good. I realized I just drank
- 0:05I drank a bunch of water and I've got it
- 0:07all in my mustache.
- 0:08>> Oh,
- 0:09>> but starting off hot. Starting off
- 0:13>> It's like going into milk mustache in
- 0:15between.
- 0:16>> It's like good for your follicles.
- 0:18>> That's true. What's new with you?
- 0:21>> Oh, um, what is new with me? Uh,
- 0:25uh, I don't know. Summertime. Summer.
- 0:29I've been on the road a little bit. Um,
- 0:31I've been traveling. I feel like
- 0:33something just happened, but I'm not
- 0:35>> like in in your world.
- 0:37>> In my like professional world. Anyway,
- 0:38mostly I'm mostly I I moved in May to a
- 0:42new apartment that I'm really enjoying.
- 0:44And I'm
- 0:46>> Hell yeah.
- 0:47>> Really?
- 0:47>> You and I used to be neighbors.
- 0:49>> Yeah, we used to be neighbors. And then
- 0:51>> we would see each other at a coffee shop
- 0:53sometimes.
- 0:53>> Yes. And I'm still in that realm.
- 0:56>> Oh, so you moved around in that realm. I
- 0:58used to live where we are currently. I
- 1:00used to be
- 1:02>> Yes. Um,
- 1:03>> talk to me though.
- 1:04>> Yeah. Yeah. I was I used to be I just
- 1:08give her exact address and phone number
- 1:09and social security. I used to live
- 1:12around here and now I live closer to
- 1:16where we used to live, but in a new
- 1:18place. And I've been really enjoying
- 1:20that all summer. Like that's been a big
- 1:22part of my summer. and um
- 1:26um going on the road.
- 1:29>> Cool. Yeah. Hell yeah.
- 1:31>> And are you doing an hour on tour and
- 1:33[ __ ] like that?
- 1:34>> Yeah. Yes.
- 1:35>> Nice.
- 1:36>> I'm about to do that in New Orleans. I
- 1:39just did that in Kentucky.
- 1:40>> Hell yeah. Although
- 1:41>> and I'll dive in immediately now we're
- 1:44talking uh vague abstractions. I love
- 1:47your stuff.
- 1:49>> Wow. Thank you, Benny. That means so
- 1:50much.
- 1:51>> Cool voice. cool unique perspective in
- 1:55the space.
- 1:55>> Wow. Thank you. That means a lot coming
- 1:57from you.
- 1:58>> I appreciate it. We had a lot of fun uh
- 2:00at that Hoboken bookstore show. That was
- 2:03fun.
- 2:03>> Yeah, I think Oh, wait. That was really
- 2:05fun. I I really like that kind of
- 2:08cultural show. Like I love crunchy
- 2:11boomers.
- 2:13I mean, it wasn't all I feel like it was
- 2:15pretty kind of mixed, but I mean a lot
- 2:16of people like older than 50. I love
- 2:18that, frankly. And it was
- 2:20>> let's fill in the folks with the vibe.
- 2:22>> And I think that I was like that was
- 2:24such a zany somehow. We were being so
- 2:26zany in the in the green room was like
- 2:28the children's section of this
- 2:30bookstore. I feel like we were being
- 2:32really silly but I don't remember what.
- 2:33>> Well, it's like a we got like plushies
- 2:35for kids that are like book related and
- 2:39we're putting them on our head and we're
- 2:40taking pictures.
- 2:41>> Oh, right.
- 2:42We're like, we had alcohol, so yeah, we
- 2:46had one.
- 2:46>> That's the first show I've drank on um I
- 2:50think. Okay.
- 2:51>> Oh, really?
- 2:52>> Either.
- 2:54>> Oh, really?
- 2:54>> Or I drank one other time in
- 2:56Philadelphia and I drank so much I am
- 2:58not sure if that happened.
- 2:59>> Wait, you don't drink at all at shows?
- 3:01>> Never. Yeah. Yeah. Except for that.
- 3:02Except for the time with you at Hobo.
- 3:04>> I'm trying to think. That's a good
- 3:06That's good. I feel like I'm
- 3:07>> The other one was Philly. I think I got
- 3:08drunk after an open mic, but I don't
- 3:10remember if it was Well, I had I had a
- 3:12few beers and I can't remember if I did
- 3:14them if I had them before or after going
- 3:16on stage cuz I had a few beers.
- 3:18>> I think it's a good like Yeah. Yeah.
- 3:20Right. Um
- 3:22>> Do you drink on
- 3:23>> Yeah, I do. I frankly I like it, but I
- 3:25feel like I it's I I should it should
- 3:27not be a habit. Like I think I should
- 3:30um do it less frequently. Like I like to
- 3:33have
- 3:34>> I love the feeling of having like half a
- 3:35glass of wine or something. And I used
- 3:38like um I used to
- 3:43like I went through this whiskey era.
- 3:45This was back in DC whiskey on on like
- 3:48bringing it up on stage and like
- 3:49>> I mean just kind of generally this was
- 3:51like in my later 20s and I was like and
- 3:55that was you know now 40 years ago. At
- 3:59some point like when I was a few years
- 4:00into open mics in DC I just sort of
- 4:03decided as a woman that I was going to
- 4:04get into whiskey. So and I kind it kind
- 4:06of worked. I like there was this one bar
- 4:08in DC that was sort of like fem coated
- 4:10but served with specialized whiskey. So
- 4:13then I would order a lot of whiskey
- 4:15sodas with lemon and I really think that
- 4:19I over like I like it's not like I
- 4:22overdid it on one particular night. It's
- 4:24just that eventually I got really sick
- 4:26of the taste or I found found too
- 4:27sugary. So now if I have one in general
- 4:30I the taste of whiskey will often take
- 4:33me very specifically back to starting
- 4:35stand comedy and I think it's generally
- 4:37a good habit that I'm not drinking
- 4:38whiskey every day but um I like having
- 4:40wine in a show but I feel like um then
- 4:44then there is a nice feel I don't know
- 4:46cuz I feel loose but then also sometimes
- 4:49it'll make you tired or cloudy and maybe
- 4:51that's like or one and then um recently
- 4:56I've and into having a
- 5:02Red Bull. Just a Red Bull.
- 5:04>> Just a Red Bull. Not like a Red Bull
- 5:05vodka. Like
- 5:06>> I have had that before
- 5:07>> really,
- 5:07>> but if I don't feel like drinking or if
- 5:09I'm like, you know, like going to
- 5:11another spot right after, I'll just have
- 5:12a Red Bull because I drink a lot of
- 5:15coffee that I don't think coffee affects
- 5:16me. But I like Red Bull cuz even if
- 5:20psychosmatically
- 5:22I get like a like a
- 5:25>> Yeah. to see you on a Red Bull on stage.
- 5:28I'd love to see you on a Red Bull
- 5:30violent
- 5:35energy performance.
- 5:36>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I understand that.
- 5:38>> Um
- 5:39>> like Well, you've got some stuff. I
- 5:41mean, like, uh you're Okay. What I like
- 5:43about you is you're exploring topics
- 5:46that uh people aren't necessarily
- 5:50exploring. And then I like it. Like
- 5:52you're doing you're doing fractal
- 5:54material. You're doing uh Rome,
- 5:57>> like ancient Rome. It's cool. And like
- 5:59like
- 6:00>> I maybe a mutual shared thing. Um I'm
- 6:03not doing that much like on the apps
- 6:05type stuff. Uh
- 6:07>> you mean like dating?
- 6:08>> Yeah. Or orally?
- 6:09>> Oh, you mean like comedically you're not
- 6:12>> or like Yeah, I understand. Yes. No. No.
- 6:14I was like I get it. I get it. I get it.
- 6:16Yeah.
- 6:16>> Yeah. Yeah. There's a there's a lot of
- 6:18um right
- 6:18>> a lot of comedy topics that people are
- 6:20like all right well what is my take on
- 6:22>> this thing in culture or is that guys
- 6:24right
- 6:25>> yeah yeah yeah and I like how you're not
- 6:26doing that
- 6:27>> and you're not doing it
- 6:28>> right and uh hell yeah
- 6:29>> yeah hell yeah
- 6:30>> [ __ ] yeah
- 6:30>> hell yeah
- 6:32>> I think it's like
- 6:32>> I don't know
- 6:34>> I struggle maybe I don't know how do you
- 6:36feel this but I struggle to like I'm
- 6:37really bad about writing getting jokes
- 6:39like
- 6:41>> not bad about it I just mean what's the
- 6:43right wording here I mean like I'm not
- 6:44very skilled at it like I think that
- 6:49I have a few jokes about I have one joke
- 6:51about something that happened that's
- 6:53like related to like a man but so I
- 6:56guess in theory it's about dating but
- 6:57it's like more like a specific thing
- 7:00>> that well I've got dating adjacent stuff
- 7:02>> right that's how I feel I struggle with
- 7:04writing a joke that's like about dating
- 7:06on the apps or something that's actually
- 7:09that I care about or is in my voice and
- 7:11it's okay I find that material about
- 7:15that to be really funny if it's funny
- 7:16and I enjoy it, you know, like from
- 7:18others.
- 7:20But yeah, I like I've never had I've
- 7:22never been able to write relationship
- 7:23material very well or just dating Joe
- 7:26unless it's like something
- 7:29>> maybe maybe you'll feel this way. Uh my
- 7:31two thoughts are because so many people
- 7:33are in that space. It's hard to find a
- 7:35necessarily a new thing. Maybe maybe
- 7:37that's
- 7:37>> Yeah, that's interesting. Right. But
- 7:39then the other side of it is um I
- 7:41remember dating this person and they
- 7:42were like, "Please never make jokes
- 7:44about me on stage." And I'm like, "Okay,
- 7:46well if you talk about dating on stage,
- 7:48people are worried about dating you."
- 7:53>> You know what I mean? Because then
- 7:54they're like, "I'm going to be m people
- 7:56don't want to be material."
- 7:58You know what I mean?
- 7:58>> Right. Right. Right. Right. Right.
- 7:59Right. Huh. Right. And I also find Yeah.
- 8:03I've had people I've dated tell me that.
- 8:05But I also kind of am like I'm not
- 8:07trying to write a joke about you by the
- 8:10way, but also sometimes it's
- 8:12organically. Yeah. Like who do you think
- 8:14you are?
- 8:14>> Weird as hell.
- 8:16>> But that organic I'm trying to What's an
- 8:18example?
- 8:20>> Um
- 8:23>> like one What's an example? Uh I don't
- 8:26know. I'm like blanking. Like one time
- 8:27like I was this ended up being a
- 8:29two-year relationship. at the beginning
- 8:31of it, he um
- 8:35like made my bed really nicely like
- 8:38while I was gone and I like noted that
- 8:40and so I I made a quick joke about that
- 8:42but it wasn't really about him or
- 8:44anything or like
- 8:46>> Yeah, freaked me out.
- 8:48>> I know. Exactly. It kind of freaked me
- 8:49out.
- 8:51>> Like I wouldn't want that. I'd be like
- 8:52I'd be like,
- 8:54>> but maybe I know especially there's
- 8:56something about maybe it's like kind of
- 8:58gendered but it's still kind of freaked
- 8:59me out cuz this maybe it's a little bit
- 9:01gendered right where it's like
- 9:03>> okay thanks daddy like but also it's
- 9:05like huh
- 9:08like uh thank you
- 9:11>> necessary I don't know
- 9:13>> I mean cooking cooking for someone it's
- 9:14like yeah you can then eat the food like
- 9:16making their bed it is like brother we
- 9:19don't need to that was not a necessary
- 9:21gesture Exactly.
- 9:22>> Yeah.
- 9:23>> So, or like right now I have a
- 9:26>> joke about somebody
- 9:29I won't talk more in depthly in depth
- 9:32about the joke, but it's just that
- 9:34somebody like I saw his [ __ ] like he
- 9:38didn't flush it in his face. Does that
- 9:41make sense?
- 9:41>> Yeah.
- 9:42>> So, like in theory that's about dating
- 9:44cuz that was on a a date of sorts. But
- 9:47the joke is like about that. I guess
- 9:50that's kind of like or yeah and that
- 9:54happened in September and then now I've
- 9:56only now kind of figured out how to make
- 9:58it into a bit. But then
- 10:00>> also separately um
- 10:03like
- 10:05I don't know if I have a if I'm in a
- 10:07relationship relationship and I have
- 10:09material about it. I have to cough.
- 10:11Excuse me. I have tuberculosis. I don't
- 10:14I just um Okay. So, uh, um,
- 10:18>> if you're in a long-term thing, it's
- 10:20>> then, sorry,
- 10:21>> you don't want to
- 10:22>> I find it easier to write a joke about
- 10:24it later, like after I've had a lot of
- 10:26time to process.
- 10:28>> No, that makes sense. Yeah. I mean, um,
- 10:31>> because the emotions are fresh in that
- 10:33moment. And also, it's like talking
- 10:35about on stage, if you're in something
- 10:37can [ __ ] up the vi you're not trying to
- 10:39process.
- 10:40>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You're right.
- 10:41>> Yeah. Yeah.
- 10:42>> And I think the audiences can kind of
- 10:45People can tell. I used to You ever go
- 10:48to Mike's and like
- 10:49>> if people there's like uh comedians who
- 10:51are dating and then they do like
- 10:52material about
- 10:53>> Oh, yeah. You see them like do it
- 10:56passive aggressively and you're like,
- 10:57"Oh, you're going to break up."
- 10:59>> Yeah. I think that really happens.
- 11:00>> I've seen that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 11:03>> Benny, you said no gossiping.
- 11:04>> I'm not say I'm not naming names and
- 11:06this is years ago,
- 11:08>> right?
- 11:11>> Okay. So, uh, I guess in terms of like
- 11:14topic choice. Oh, no worries. No, you're
- 11:16good. As long as you cough elsewhere.
- 11:18>> Yeah. Not not to your mouth. Okay.
- 11:20Sorry. Excuse me. Um, what were you
- 11:22saying? What did I say?
- 11:23>> Um, just the idea of like
- 11:26>> how do you pick in a topic to like talk
- 11:30about like like you like like oh I want
- 11:32to talk about uh do you have a Gollum
- 11:35bit?
- 11:36>> Yeah, I do.
- 11:37>> What's the golem? I'd like it. I forget
- 11:39what it is. We both have a Gollum bit. I
- 11:41have like I have like one and a half or
- 11:44two.
- 11:45>> You've got a gallon bit and a little bit
- 11:46of a smleg bit.
- 11:48>> Yeah.
- 11:51>> Excuse me folks. Um
- 11:52>> folks,
- 11:54>> um
- 11:55uh Okay, sorry. I have an old golem.
- 11:58>> Please with myself smile when I made
- 12:00that joke. I feel like I went anyway.
- 12:02Sorry. You have an old go. Um I have an
- 12:05old one.
- 12:06No, no. I think it's just that when it
- 12:08was like starting like when I was a few
- 12:09years and I was in DC, I had some
- 12:11reference to Gollum regarding like my
- 12:14body like the and Oh, I had a buzz cut.
- 12:16So, I looked kind of crazy like I looked
- 12:20like
- 12:22>> Gollum.
- 12:22>> Okay.
- 12:24>> I mean, not but like uh you know cuz I
- 12:27kind of was like sometimes I'll like if
- 12:30I'm feeling physical on stage I'll be
- 12:32like kind of bendy or something. Yeah.
- 12:33Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. and that and I
- 12:36have like
- 12:37>> my eyes I don't even think I realized
- 12:39this until I was years into comedy that
- 12:41I like bulg my eyes sometimes and so I
- 12:44like um just kind of so I had the some
- 12:46some reference to go years ago but I
- 12:47actually kind of forgot what the wording
- 12:49was. It was just that like something
- 12:50about my body language I related myself
- 12:52to Gollum or like or like like I had a
- 12:55lot of jokes about how I looked like
- 12:56Obama cuz I really did. I was just like
- 12:58I dressed more adjunist and I had a bus
- 13:00cut. And then the more recent joke about
- 13:02Gollum is that um I'm like just making
- 13:05fun of the fact that there's black
- 13:06people in the new Lord of the Rings
- 13:08series just cuz it's like which
- 13:10obviously I think is cool but like
- 13:11whatever representation but I'm just
- 13:13kind of making fun of it because it's
- 13:15like
- 13:16>> oh what? Yeah. Wait, what? Um, oh, at
- 13:20long last, uh, the diaspora has spread
- 13:23to the Shire and then and then, um,
- 13:26>> that voice.
- 13:27>> Oh,
- 13:29>> thank you. Um,
- 13:30>> I promise I sell it more on stage. Okay.
- 13:32So, um, something something. It's like,
- 13:37uh, what what the [ __ ] is a joke?
- 13:38>> Black Gollum. And then you would do an
- 13:40act out.
- 13:43>> I do like really deaf jam style. No,
- 13:45it's just about how um
- 13:47>> something about
- 13:48>> Sorry, not okay. I'm not going to do any
- 13:49voice, but something in the space of how
- 13:51Bernie Mack goes, I love [ __ ] they
- 13:53sell by the pound, but it's or they
- 13:55should sell by the pound. It's it's
- 13:56Gollum talking about the ring in a dev
- 13:58jam.
- 13:59I love the ring.
- 14:02>> I love that. Yeah.
- 14:03>> Um the the line is about how they should
- 14:05make Gollum a woman like I won't rest
- 14:07until like if it's about progress and
- 14:09representation, like I won't rest until
- 14:11um they finally make Gollum a woman of
- 14:13color. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 14:15>> And then I say I I'm seeking employment
- 14:18and then I like do some of an act out.
- 14:20>> Oh, hell yeah.
- 14:21>> That's a that's like the recent
- 14:22iteration of it, I guess.
- 14:24>> Yes. Yes. That's how I that I'm was
- 14:26riffing on the joke that I was
- 14:28subconsciously of making.
- 14:30>> And it's drawn a lot of not a lot of
- 14:33drawn medium to light attention from
- 14:35people who are really into the Lord of
- 14:37the Rings universe or black or like
- 14:39science fiction conversations in general
- 14:40or fantasy conversations. And I have to
- 14:42confess, I'm not really steeped like
- 14:43that. I just kind of like had that
- 14:45observation. But I don't mind that the
- 14:47people coming to me like talking to me
- 14:49about that, you know?
- 14:50>> Yeah.
- 14:50>> Like I'd rather I'd rather that be my
- 14:52audience.
- 14:53>> Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 14:54>> And that's a fun that's a fun audience.
- 14:56That's a fun
- 14:57>> zone. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 15:00>> I guess the larger question um being we
- 15:04got like how how are you deciding what
- 15:08to write about?
- 15:08>> Oh, right. Sorry. I know that's sort of
- 15:10stupidly close.
- 15:11>> Wait, are we supposed to be engaging
- 15:12this?
- 15:13>> Yeah, whatever. Who the [ __ ]
- 15:14>> can I now? Wait, were you going to
- 15:16announce it?
- 15:16>> Do it. No, no, no. I don't No, I don't
- 15:18give a [ __ ] No, no, no. Um,
- 15:19>> I want to do
- 15:20>> any Yeah. What arts and crafts that
- 15:22speaks to you?
- 15:22>> This is good. This is good for ADHD. Um,
- 15:24>> what speaks to you?
- 15:26>> Okay. So, yeah. How do I think of like
- 15:29premises or material? Is that such a
- 15:31stupidly Well, it's not I'm not because
- 15:33I'm not asking like how you write jokes
- 15:35as much as or or like or any of that,
- 15:37but I'm more uh my question is like um
- 15:41are you deliberate about like topic
- 15:42choice? Are you like I want to write a
- 15:44joke about ancient Rome
- 15:45>> sometimes. Sometimes yes sometimes
- 15:47though that doesn't work like right now.
- 15:49>> Yeah.
- 15:51>> What's an example of that? Like right
- 15:52now
- 15:53>> [ __ ] I'm trying to write a I know I know
- 15:56it's cuz I'm cursed. This is like a
- 15:58curse. So I like
- 16:01try. Okay. Because I just realized that
- 16:03I have a lot of material right now that
- 16:05have to do with like things that are
- 16:06spirals, like just generally like things
- 16:08in the world. So, I'm trying to like
- 16:10kind of anchor my hour around that. But
- 16:13I also now feel like I'm I'm like
- 16:15shoehorning ideas into this framework,
- 16:18which I don't know. I was feeling like
- 16:20like for example,
- 16:22I last time I just kind of did an hour
- 16:24of new stuff at Union Hall. I was doing
- 16:26some No, this was two months ago. I was
- 16:29trying to do um
- 16:32stuff about like duck dicks, like duck
- 16:35penises are spirals,
- 16:37>> which I didn't have a joke about that. I
- 16:39just had jokes about other things about
- 16:40that. You want to hear a joke about
- 16:41that?
- 16:41>> You do?
- 16:42>> I do.
- 16:42>> Oh my gosh. Yeah. What's the joke?
- 16:44>> Uh what's Okay, it's the opposite angle.
- 16:46Um but okay, duck [ __ ] is like famous
- 16:50famously a labyrinth. That's why uh
- 16:53that's why ducks like breadcrumbs so
- 16:54much. That's how they find their way
- 16:56out.
- 16:56>> That's great.
- 16:57>> They pull out. Oh my gosh. Wait, this is
- 16:59so interesting. Okay, so I'm going to
- 17:01steer clear because it's your territory.
- 17:02>> Well, no, no, no, no, no. I don't do
- 17:04that joke. Uh cuz it
- 17:07>> Why don't I do that joke? Maybe I'll try
- 17:08that joke.
- 17:09>> That's funny.
- 17:09>> Yeah, that's that is funny. Oh, you know
- 17:12what? People don't agree. People don't
- 17:13know that duck [ __ ] is a labyrinth.
- 17:15>> Oh, right.
- 17:16>> And that's not something that they're
- 17:17like ready to immediately cosign if they
- 17:19haven't heard it before,
- 17:20>> right? I see that.
- 17:22>> But the penis being a spiral, I think
- 17:23people would be on board with
- 17:24immediately. What's your What's your
- 17:25spiral joke? Is it fra is it a fractal
- 17:27penis?
- 17:28>> That'd be awesome.
- 17:29>> What did I say about it?
- 17:30>> Like it like it goes smaller and smaller
- 17:32and you infinitely tiny heads that are
- 17:34all coming.
- 17:34>> Wait, that's so
- 17:36>> funny. Actually,
- 17:38>> I don't mean to I don't mean to write in
- 17:39your
- 17:40>> No, but I I couldn't find like a joke
- 17:42about it. I just kind of was trying to
- 17:44talk about it in a structured way, but
- 17:45it didn't really like land or make
- 17:48sense. But then I called the hour duct
- 17:51dicks Other Spirals. H
- 17:54>> wait, maybe I can just keep calling it
- 17:56that and like just reference the fact
- 17:57that sometimes you can't force your hand
- 18:00at something. But anyway, um
- 18:01>> like a duck dick trying to force its way
- 18:03>> into a duck [ __ ]
- 18:05>> Could you have spirals be like the main
- 18:08focus and then also be like and here's
- 18:11in the wider
- 18:12>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's kind of what
- 18:15I'm thinking in general. And so anyway,
- 18:17that was like something like I I'm doing
- 18:18a show in Boston in September that I'm
- 18:21calling Duck Dicks Other Spirals, but I
- 18:23don't have a joke about Duct Dicks. I
- 18:24just have a that's like I just thought
- 18:27it was like a fun it sounded fun.
- 18:30>> And then yeah, sometimes like cuz I
- 18:33really love writing jokes about history.
- 18:34Definitely. I'll have a topic that comes
- 18:36to mind, like a historical topic or
- 18:38person that I want to write a joke
- 18:40about, but it's not I'll sometimes I'll
- 18:43like sometimes it works, but sometimes
- 18:45I'll struggle with finding like an
- 18:47authentic joke out of it. So I find that
- 18:49also the inverse will happen where
- 18:51something kind of just um like I feel
- 18:54like my observational jokes are things
- 18:55that happen to me or and then
- 18:59>> with like well the history is more of
- 19:02like looking into is that um are you
- 19:04like okay I want to write a joke about
- 19:07this person because I've already watched
- 19:09some sort of documentary on XYZ
- 19:13because you watched it Gettysburg good
- 19:15dress or something or is it like you you
- 19:17like oh I want to know about Tilla the
- 19:19Hun let me look into Ailla the Hun and
- 19:21try to write Attilla the Hun jokes or
- 19:23something.
- 19:23>> I would say it started because you know
- 19:24I have I have a masters in history and I
- 19:26worked for like years in history museums
- 19:29like most of my 20s. So then and as I
- 19:31started comedy and as it moved forward a
- 19:33bit I still was. So I feel like when I
- 19:37started comedy I was just thinking
- 19:41>> about historical idea. Sorry.
- 19:42>> Turning on the hot glue gun by the way.
- 19:44>> Oh fun. [ __ ] it up. [ __ ] it up. Wait. I
- 19:46realized to swear on on
- 19:48>> Yeah, I just said public radio and
- 19:49whatnot. But yeah. Yeah. Oh [ __ ] You
- 19:52have a you have a masters in history.
- 19:53>> Yeah. So and like public history. So I
- 19:55was like focusing on museum stuff. So
- 19:57anyway, anyway, when I started comedy,
- 19:59which was like as I was finishing my
- 20:00program, I was like really thinking
- 20:02about
- 20:03>> I was thinking in historical terms like
- 20:05I was thinking about ideas and
- 20:07frameworks and people
- 20:10and anecdotes that are historical in
- 20:13nature. So that really shaped a lot of
- 20:15my early comedic thinking. So I think
- 20:17that still is the case like my root like
- 20:19the root of me trying to do standup
- 20:22comedy is like
- 20:23>> a text.
- 20:24>> Yeah. Or like Yeah. I mean sure but uh
- 20:27>> museum
- 20:28>> stuff like a like a primary source.
- 20:30>> Oh.
- 20:31>> Or or or like a secondary source like a
- 20:33textbook that analyzes the primary
- 20:35source. But we had to read so many
- 20:38primary sources. And I've specifically
- 20:41Yeah. I worked for like a long time at a
- 20:43civil war museum. So I just had a always
- 20:46talking and thinking about Lincoln and
- 20:47emancipation policy and stuff because of
- 20:49secondary sources and like material that
- 20:52we'd have to read to prepare to do
- 20:53presentations or tours. And then in grad
- 20:55school like we were reading a lot of
- 20:59like yeah like a letter by somebody in
- 21:01the 18th century and then another thing
- 21:03that analyzed that letter and then like
- 21:06learning the skills of being a
- 21:07historian. So somehow those things are
- 21:09really um like the
- 21:12um you know like the research tools or
- 21:14whatever or like the analysis tools
- 21:16>> and that that informs your process or
- 21:18that also informs like the structure of
- 21:20the ideas.
- 21:21>> I think both.
- 21:22>> Okay.
- 21:22>> To be honest, both.
- 21:24>> To be honest, if we can be can we be
- 21:26[ __ ] honest on here?
- 21:27>> Both.
- 21:29>> Um
- 21:30>> by the way, my plan is to glue this
- 21:32eyeball to the end of this string and
- 21:34make some sort of eyeball string. So, I
- 21:36really love eyeballs.
- 21:38>> Oh, you got a bunch of eyeballs.
- 21:39>> Yeah.
- 21:40>> Nice.
- 21:40>> I think they're really creepy and fun.
- 21:42>> Yeah, they're great.
- 21:42>> Um,
- 21:44so yeah. Okay. Like right now.
- 21:50Okay. So, I'm trying to Yeah. I'm like
- 21:51thinking about spirals. I'm thinking
- 21:53about fractals. I'm thinking about the
- 21:56Fibonacci sequence sequence. I just
- 21:58found this book on the street outside of
- 22:00Fort Green Park called UK. The UK. Hang
- 22:04on. I have it in my bag. One second. Hm.
- 22:08A a blink uh fractal speech.
- 22:12>> Uh four score and 4 days and 4 hours and
- 22:164 minutes and
- 22:18>> is that like
- 22:20>> be interesting if that was like
- 22:22according to the Fibonacci equation.
- 22:25>> Yeah.
- 22:25>> Which yes.
- 22:27>> It's like two Well, it would be reverse,
- 22:29I guess, right? Or
- 22:30>> trying to figure out that.
- 22:30>> So, it's like
- 22:321 + 2. Hang on. It's like 1 plus two is
- 22:35three.
- 22:36>> Yes.
- 22:37>> And then three
- 22:38>> famous.
- 22:40>> Never mind.
- 22:41>> 3+ 2 is five. 5 plus 3.
- 22:43>> Yeah. Yeah.
- 22:43>> Yeah.
- 22:44>> Uh so you have the book on
- 22:46>> window. Whoa.
- 22:47>> Cuz I have cuz I I think I have to go
- 22:51to my spot after. So I'm going to be on
- 22:52the train for a long time. Um Uclid's
- 22:54window the story of geometry from
- 22:56parallel lines to hyperspace. So, it's
- 22:58like about the history of broadly like
- 23:01Greek, like how Greek mathematical
- 23:04thinking shaped our relationship to
- 23:06abstract thinking and reason, but also
- 23:08honing on on this guy. My point is that
- 23:10now I'm like really thinking about like
- 23:12spirals and stuff cuz it's just talking
- 23:14about you know Greek
- 23:17mathematicians and how they're making
- 23:19sense of space like our lived our our
- 23:23lived space and shapes and thinking
- 23:25about geometry in terms of space. I mean
- 23:28ge uh geography geography like
- 23:30>> so anyway anyway so like I'm like oh
- 23:32[ __ ] yeah I can write jokes about this
- 23:33but it's sometimes it's not that easy
- 23:35for me I have to be like okay well what
- 23:37is this actually like is this just
- 23:38something I think is kind of cool and
- 23:40interesting but or or is there like
- 23:44space for um a joke there and I feel
- 23:47like I've over the years had to learn to
- 23:52I can smell that getting hot kind of
- 23:54interesting
- 23:54>> that's the cool part right that's how
- 23:56you know it's good to Oh
- 23:57>> yeah, you know, you know how the it's
- 23:59how you know the juice is
- 24:01>> ready.
- 24:01>> Juice is melt is juiced up.
- 24:03>> Juice. Watch out. It is hot.
- 24:05>> Um I'm into these glue dots.
- 24:08>> Yeah, they might have they might Oh. Oh,
- 24:10[ __ ] It's hot. [ __ ] Forgot it's hot.
- 24:13>> Oh, okay.
- 24:14>> Oh, it's like uh you're Yeah, it's like
- 24:17totally fine. Um
- 24:18>> Um Yeah, sorry. I want to continuing
- 24:21what you're saying with this idea of uh
- 24:25working in that space. Uh two thoughts
- 24:28there. The first being like sometimes
- 24:31I'll like study some sort of thing like
- 24:34I'll read the about a like or by study I
- 24:37mean like I'll watch a YouTube video
- 24:38about dinosaurs, right? But then like
- 24:41but then like I won't like
- 24:43>> I won't immediately get a joke from that
- 24:45but then later um I'll be like
- 24:48>> you know uh watching a video about like
- 24:51>> some sort of some promo video for
- 24:53somebody doing like a like a real estate
- 24:55promo for like a downtown Manhattan
- 24:57apartment and having watched the
- 24:59dinosaur video that I look at that and
- 25:01I'm like oh interesting I can see how
- 25:03like I'm going to connect this back to
- 25:04the dinosaur right that's so cool
- 25:06>> and so so I think maybe a little bit
- 25:08what you're doing as well is it's You're
- 25:10loading up the
- 25:12>> like the cannon. The glue gun. The glue
- 25:15cylinder.
- 25:16>> Yeah. Loading up.
- 25:16>> Also get an eyeball to attach it to
- 25:18>> and then something activates.
- 25:20>> Yes.
- 25:21>> Like you're So like you take in a
- 25:23documentary or you read something.
- 25:25>> Then you some other [ __ ]
- 25:27>> then. But then so like that creates this
- 25:28backlog of just like material
- 25:31observation. I mean of inspiration where
- 25:33it's like the cylinder,
- 25:35the glue cylinder and then like
- 25:37something in your day or something else
- 25:39you encounter.
- 25:40>> It's the eyeball
- 25:42>> is the eyeball and you're like oh wait I
- 25:44have a system for executing for
- 25:47execution I have like a way to utilize
- 25:49the glue cylinder
- 25:51>> and that's pulling the trigger
- 25:52>> like the thing you saw.
- 25:53>> Absolutely. Well, and and well, the
- 25:56second followup is um you know, if
- 25:59you're reading about Uklid's window and
- 26:01spirals and whatnot, and there's all
- 26:03this stuff that's like, okay, I assume
- 26:05you were thinking a lot about this where
- 26:07it's like, how do I get the crowd to
- 26:09know what the hell I'm talking about?
- 26:11>> Yeah.
- 26:11>> Like, how do I get them to know this
- 26:12immediately?
- 26:13>> It took a lot of failure on my end to
- 26:15figure that figure out how to
- 26:19kind of bridge that gap just because I
- 26:20was really thinking along such nerdy
- 26:22lines when I first started over mics.
- 26:24But I was also doing different kinds of
- 26:25mics. I was doing broier mics and I was
- 26:27doing like black rooms in DC. So it
- 26:30wasn't just like a kind of like wonky
- 26:32bespckled
- 26:34young millennial audience in DC only.
- 26:37Like so
- 26:39I had to figure it out somewhere.
- 26:41>> It's bespecled. I'm like let's go. It's
- 26:43Uklid material times.
- 26:44>> I know. I know. I love that. But it's
- 26:48not the only people that couldn't see
- 26:50comedy. I think that's important. So,
- 26:51and I and I'll always believe it's
- 26:53important to put yourself in different
- 26:55kind of comedy audiences
- 26:58to the extent that it's of interest or
- 26:59something. But like,
- 27:00>> do you plan on using the goo gun by the
- 27:01way? This maybe I'll turn.
- 27:02>> Not yet. You can you can turn that puppy
- 27:04off. You can give her some rest.
- 27:06>> Um, I'm going to draw some things with
- 27:09So then,
- 27:10uh, wait, an example just came to my
- 27:12mind. Um, oh, wait. When I first started
- 27:16like one of my first I had this like
- 27:18idea about
- 27:22person
- 27:25>> what's the word personification
- 27:27personifying personifying is the verb
- 27:30right
- 27:30>> yeah like taking an animal like he's
- 27:32wearing
- 27:32>> the planets like this was like early on
- 27:35and it was honestly based off like a
- 27:36really silly conversation I'd had like
- 27:38as a senior in in college and so then
- 27:41years later I thought about that as I
- 27:43was like writing jokes and that always
- 27:45had stuck in my mind as something kind
- 27:47of fun to try out which is just like
- 27:49what would they be saying like and I
- 27:51don't even remember but it was just like
- 27:53Mars is like hot or like like something
- 27:56about Mars being physically hot.
- 28:00>> Is that correct? No.
- 28:04Oh, I actually forgot like anyway, but
- 28:06the point was I was giving a personality
- 28:07to each of the planets and then Pluto
- 28:10had some like joke about Pluto being
- 28:11like, you know, but I I exist or
- 28:14whatever. And so then something like
- 28:15that. And you know, it was so like I
- 28:18didn't know how to do material like
- 28:19that. It was just an idea that I'd had
- 28:21that mostly was confusing and too weird.
- 28:25A guy I was getting at the time who was
- 28:26generally supportive of me was like, I
- 28:29mean, me doing obviously open mics was
- 28:31like
- 28:33I don't know about that. And then sure
- 28:34enough, one time a woman in the audience
- 28:36was like too high brow. And I don't
- 28:38think it's high brow. I just think I
- 28:40don't know. I didn't know how to do
- 28:42that. And I also think it was like not
- 28:44the right like it wasn't the right
- 28:46instinct. Like I if I had a joke about
- 28:48that now and I hadn't made it work, I
- 28:50would do it maybe at like a union hall
- 28:52but not at a certain other environment,
- 28:53you know, where this mic was. So that's
- 28:56just an example of something that I
- 28:57couldn't I don't know. Yeah.
- 28:59>> No, that makes sense. I um I tried to do
- 29:01one where I was personifying uh all the
- 29:05colors of the rainbow.
- 29:06>> Wait, that's so interesting.
- 29:08>> I uh
- 29:09>> kind of similarly coded
- 29:10>> sim similarly coded idea. Um and I was
- 29:14kind of like they're kind of like a
- 29:15Greek pantheon which is interesting with
- 29:17the planets cuz that's also like a space
- 29:19that that's like they're also um
- 29:22>> I know it's off but I'm going to try.
- 29:23>> Oh yeah. Yeah, it should still be kind
- 29:24of hot.
- 29:27I forget the whole I forget the whole
- 29:29premise. Uh what kind of like indigo?
- 29:32>> I don't know. I had different ones like
- 29:34because like they were hooking up. Uh
- 29:36but then like that like there was like
- 29:39in because it was like Greek mythology.
- 29:40There's like incest moments. It was like
- 29:42>> right
- 29:42>> like um
- 29:44blue and red like had a kid which was
- 29:48purple, but then purple and blue also
- 29:51had a kid which was indigo. Something
- 29:53like that.
- 29:54>> I love that. That's really creative.
- 29:56>> I appreciate that. Um,
- 29:58>> I don't know if it was funny enough,
- 30:00>> right? Not not right. I mean, like I
- 30:02just
- 30:02>> Right. Yeah.
- 30:04>> I mean, like I understand what you mean.
- 30:06I think I run I've run into that, but I
- 30:08think that sounds really creative and
- 30:10>> I appreciate I appreciate I
- 30:11>> like, you know, distinct like unique to
- 30:13your voice.
- 30:14>> Thank you. I I you know uh it's having
- 30:18um fun and going a more interesting
- 30:21creative direction and yeah uh you know
- 30:26like like
- 30:27>> I would much rather have a joke about uh
- 30:30like the beauty of a snowflake
- 30:33>> than about like being on the apps just
- 30:35cuz it like just aesthetically there's
- 30:37something so fun. Like I've been
- 30:39thinking about a lot about uh apple
- 30:40cider lately.
- 30:41>> Oh fun.
- 30:42>> It's like there something there for me.
- 30:44You know what I mean? I really enjoy the
- 30:45>> It's the You ever been thinking about
- 30:46apple cider?
- 30:47>> What What sparked that?
- 30:49>> I was thinking about apple cider.
- 30:51>> Did you have some or you were just
- 30:52thinking about it?
- 30:53>> I think I saw some at the store and I
- 30:54was like, "Yes, I need to think about
- 30:56this."
- 30:56>> Yeah, exactly. I I know. I kind of know
- 30:58what you mean. Like structurally, I know
- 30:59what you or uh systematically you're
- 31:01like, "Okay, I've been thinking about
- 31:03apple cider." And now you want I do want
- 31:04to write a bit about it or do you have a
- 31:05bit?
- 31:06>> Love to. I I've got a few that are not
- 31:09that well developed, but I but I
- 31:12>> That's really cool. I appreciate but I
- 31:14but it's been difficult. It's like your
- 31:16spirals where I'm looking at apple
- 31:18cider. I'm like, "All right, there's got
- 31:19to be something." Uh
- 31:21>> yeah, but there will be.
- 31:22>> There will be. I got to sit.
- 31:24>> You know what happens to me is I will be
- 31:26like, "Come on, I want to write a joke
- 31:29about George Washington. Come on,
- 31:31Britney." And then I just have nothing.
- 31:32And then
- 31:35like 6 months later,
- 31:37>> something Well, I guess it's like what
- 31:38we were talking about earlier. Yeah.
- 31:39>> Put on deck. Yeah.
- 31:40>> And you're like, "Oh." And sometimes it
- 31:42happens to me with like punchlines that
- 31:43make a otherwise fun premise but a not
- 31:47oh I know I know like like I have one
- 31:48right now that's like the whole fractal
- 31:50stuff is this like bit that's really
- 31:52long but it has to do with broccoli and
- 31:55it just took me forever to figure it out
- 31:56as anything that was like funny. I just
- 31:58thought it was funny. I thought it was
- 32:00interesting
- 32:02when I had the thought about broccoli. I
- 32:04I know the I know the bit the the
- 32:07>> your like your mom told you it was a
- 32:09fractal or something and then you
- 32:11>> well that was like the thing that made
- 32:12it work like I basically I had this like
- 32:14random I was like oh a fit is identical
- 32:18to a crown of broccoli and then I wanted
- 32:21to rank a joke about that but obviously
- 32:22no one knew or cared what I was talking
- 32:24about and it took like so long and I do
- 32:27feel comfortable shouting this name out
- 32:29because she's my friend and um it was a
- 32:32comedian Julia a shiplet at one point
- 32:34was like,
- 32:36>> "Britty, no, that's too weird. Like, I
- 32:38want to hear about your personal life."
- 32:41And this was last fall. And I really, in
- 32:43her defense, I really was failing at
- 32:45this premise that no one was invested
- 32:49in. But then a series of things happened
- 32:51to me related to that that made the joke
- 32:54ultimately work, including my mom like
- 32:57knowing what a fractal is. So after like
- 33:01I got kind of like like a guy to a guy
- 33:05came up to me to talk to me about
- 33:06fractals after my set like a random guy
- 33:10and then
- 33:12two months later my mom like responded
- 33:15to something. So long story short
- 33:16without going into detail is like
- 33:17without boring people about the bit is
- 33:19like a number of real life things
- 33:22happened
- 33:24that
- 33:26made my
- 33:27>> Yeah. And then that's kind of made it a
- 33:29bit meta, but I don't mind that I guess
- 33:32right now. So anyway,
- 33:34>> no, no, that's cool. No, it's an
- 33:36interesting
- 33:38it's it's like it's a story, but it's
- 33:40also like about how ideas are. I don't
- 33:44know,
- 33:44>> right?
- 33:45>> It's cool.
- 33:46>> It's a cool bit. Sorry, folks that you
- 33:48don't get to see it in this moment.
- 33:49Sorry. Go check it out if it's online.
- 33:53>> It's not yet, but stay tuned, friends.
- 33:55Stay [ __ ] tuned
- 33:57>> or just find my ass performing around
- 34:00New York City.
- 34:01>> When does Wait, when does this come out?
- 34:02>> I don't know.
- 34:03>> Cool.
- 34:05>> Probably like next week.
- 34:06>> Oh, yeah.
- 34:06>> Yeah. I've got a quick turnaround
- 34:08because I don't do this podcast enough.
- 34:09We were uh I just had Nico on.
- 34:12>> Oh, you Okay, cool. Carney. Double the
- 34:14Carney.
- 34:14>> Double the Carney. Um which
- 34:17>> could have been Double the Carney in
- 34:18person, but it doesn't didn't really
- 34:19work.
- 34:19>> Was it?
- 34:19>> Sorry. It could could have been double
- 34:23the carney in person, but it did not
- 34:25quite work.
- 34:25>> Yeah, I was trying to do the thing where
- 34:26I have four people on as I was doing.
- 34:28>> Would we all be at the table?
- 34:29>> It's so [ __ ] hard to
- 34:31>> I know. Comics are naughty.
- 34:33>> Yeah. Yeah. People are
- 34:35>> and busy, you know.
- 34:35>> Yeah. They're just like, "Oh, I've got a
- 34:37set." I'm like, "All right, well, you
- 34:39also have a podcast."
- 34:40>> It must be like like I've gotten in
- 34:42trouble with boyfriends who are not in
- 34:44comedy. Like
- 34:46I'm like, "Oh, huh. I'm going to I have
- 34:48a show." and they're like, "Britney,
- 34:50like I was really hoping that we would
- 34:52go to dinner or something like that kind
- 34:54of thing." And that's happened to me
- 34:56like in in like um yeah, and my past two
- 35:01serious relationships were not with a
- 35:02comedian. And
- 35:05anyway,
- 35:06>> like you get a you get an offer to do a
- 35:07show and you're like, I got to do that
- 35:09or whatever. or is that
- 35:10>> Yeah, I kind of like jump on opportunity
- 35:12to show, but not I also have like really
- 35:15um bad ADHD or strong ADHD. So, I I feel
- 35:17like I I'm forgetful about agreeing to
- 35:20something that's not immediately in my
- 35:21mind, right? So, I I've been like, "Oh,
- 35:22yeah, we can go." Or like, you know,
- 35:24it's like like a guy has been like um
- 35:28asking me about Thursday and it's like,
- 35:30"Yeah, we'll we can go do something
- 35:32Thursday evening." But then I get an
- 35:33offer to do a spot somewhere and so I'll
- 35:35just say yes cuz it's like on the
- 35:37forefront or it's like
- 35:38>> and so anyway, I' How What's my point of
- 35:42this? My point is like you in this
- 35:43instance trying to wrangle comedians to
- 35:45join you in doing crafts. Like you're
- 35:48>> like you I'm being like comedians are
- 35:50being me. What? Like you know what I
- 35:53mean? Like cuz comedians are are prone
- 35:55to being like,
- 35:56>> "Oh, huh. Well, oops. I have to go do
- 35:59this thing." And not really thinking
- 36:00about things I agreed to or
- 36:02>> You're also like doing well in comedy.
- 36:05like uh like it was I was trying to have
- 36:06like you Nico uh like Zach Zimmerman and
- 36:10Jay Jordan and I'm like well all of you
- 36:12are like doing well enough that it's
- 36:15like very very reasonable that everybody
- 36:18at some point each night is going to
- 36:20have something. You know what I mean?
- 36:21>> Well, I'm glad that it worked out this
- 36:22way.
- 36:23>> Yeah. It's also just I it fits easier in
- 36:27my room like uh having one you imagine
- 36:30having all like
- 36:31>> it would be kind of fun. It would be
- 36:32kind of like silly like a camp thing.
- 36:34Yeah, this be fun. But this is nice.
- 36:36Comfortable.
- 36:37>> This is fun. This is like intimate.
- 36:39>> I'll try to I'll try to keep doing it,
- 36:40but I I'm doing solo eps as well.
- 36:43>> Oh, with you just
- 36:45>> Yeah, I'll do
- 36:46>> Oh, you mean um you want to keep trying
- 36:48to do groups?
- 36:49>> Yeah, but maybe I'll maybe I'll try to
- 36:50do solo eps with people and then bring
- 36:52them back in a group and stuff like
- 36:53that. Do a little mix.
- 36:56>> Neat. Um
- 36:58I'm uh
- 36:59>> Gollum. What' you make? What have you
- 37:00made so far this show and tell
- 37:02>> craft checkin? Yeah,
- 37:05>> this is great. I really love getting to
- 37:07play with things.
- 37:09>> Okay, so I just made a sort of like
- 37:13card of little creature of eyeball
- 37:18systems. Creatures
- 37:19>> put the camera. Can I put it into the
- 37:21camera?
- 37:22>> Yeah.
- 37:24>> A system of creatures, you said?
- 37:26>> Yeah.
- 37:28It's like cellular.
- 37:30>> Take a look at this.
- 37:31>> It's like Oh, wow. It can be kind of
- 37:33whatever.
- 37:33>> That reminds me of uh Spore. Like the
- 37:35video. You ever play the video game
- 37:36Spore? Are you a gamer?
- 37:37>> No. No. But I feel like I
- 37:40have a lot of respect for the world of
- 37:43gaming. I just never really got into it.
- 37:45But
- 37:46>> I appreciate that.
- 37:48>> You know what I mean?
- 37:48>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I'm like I feel that
- 37:50way about like um
- 37:51>> I respect your
- 37:52>> like D and D or something or Lord of the
- 37:54I'm like I don't really know but I feel
- 37:58like
- 38:01>> um warmly towards that
- 38:03>> just like a you know just like a bow.
- 38:05>> Yeah, like a vow. Like I recently I
- 38:07recently heard somebody in a podcast
- 38:09talking about
- 38:11like they like they're talking broadly
- 38:13about um
- 38:15Housewives, right? like Real Housewives
- 38:17franchise, which I I don't really I've
- 38:20never really seen it
- 38:21>> franchise. You can open up your own.
- 38:23Sorry.
- 38:24>> Real Housewives.
- 38:24>> I'm going to open up my own Real
- 38:25Housewives.
- 38:27>> You know, you know when you go to like a
- 38:28Taco Bell and it's like the fancy Taco
- 38:30Bell.
- 38:30>> Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 38:32>> Real Housewives and we're serving pizza.
- 38:35>> You're serving pizza at this.
- 38:37>> But anyway, somebody was like,
- 38:39>> "Oh, I don't partake, but I respect
- 38:42that." I think that's how I feel about
- 38:43like
- 38:44>> video games.
- 38:44>> Sorry. So sport. What happens in Spore?
- 38:46>> Well, Spore is like microbial. At the
- 38:49beginning, it's a microbial environment
- 38:51guy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 38:52>> That sounds awesome.
- 38:53>> That's a cool game. They kind of nerfed
- 38:55it. Uh they showed a cool demo where it
- 38:57was more interesting, then they nerfed
- 38:58it. Uh Hell yeah.
- 39:01>> Love that. That's like a worm if it
- 39:03that's how a worm would wear a
- 39:04friendship bracelet.
- 39:06>> Yeah, that's how the only way a worm you
- 39:08ever dissected a worm.
- 39:10>> Um not for school.
- 39:13Wait, this is so fun to talk to you
- 39:14because Sorry, also I didn't read a
- 39:17story.
- 39:19>> Not for school.
- 39:21>> I'm like smooshed worms and stuff. I was
- 39:23like a kid
- 39:25>> to see what's inside. What's happening?
- 39:26>> Or like finding smooshed ones on the
- 39:28black top and being like, "All right,
- 39:30let's take a look at this." I don't
- 39:31really remember.
- 39:31>> I think you smushed a worm.
- 39:32>> I don't remember doing it. Um, sorry.
- 39:34>> You don't remember doing it in school? I
- 39:36do.
- 39:37>> No. No. Um, I never actually took any of
- 39:39the classes where you dissect stuff
- 39:41other than like
- 39:42>> um we did like owl pellets, but I never
- 39:44got to do the frog or anything. I like
- 39:46the frog. Dissecting a frog would have
- 39:47been up my alley. U
- 39:50>> Yeah, that is up your alley.
- 39:51>> Didn't take that class. Can I see this?
- 39:53I like the the uh the thing.
- 39:54>> The which thing?
- 39:55>> The main uh piece. Yes.
- 39:58>> Yeah.
- 40:00>> Let's take a look. You got a bunch of
- 40:02little little fellas. I like that they
- 40:04all got like this guy's got four eyes.
- 40:06Like there's like a
- 40:07>> It's like we're looking under a
- 40:08microscope at a bunch of little dudes.
- 40:10>> I know. I I kind of wish I had those as
- 40:12like little pets.
- 40:14>> This This is yours to keep, by the way.
- 40:16Of course.
- 40:16>> Thank you so much, Benny.
- 40:18>> Oh, I got to show you what I made.
- 40:20>> It's a sort of
- 40:21>> Wait, I love this
- 40:22>> eyeball clock.
- 40:24>> The numbers are 124 and seven.
- 40:27>> Wow, this is incredible.
- 40:28>> Tick tick
- 40:29>> 1124 and seven. And the the hand it it
- 40:33ah the hand only goes Let me bring it to
- 40:36the camera.
- 40:40>> This is amazing. It really like
- 40:42>> the hand only goes up and into the
- 40:43clock. What
- 40:44>> really deconstructs what a clock means
- 40:47to us. It's kind of dolly but more more
- 40:52um
- 40:54uh edge pushing.
- 40:56>> I appreciate that. I also just sort of
- 40:59uh wanted to shove this through a piece
- 41:01of paper and then I was like it kind of
- 41:03looks like the hand of clock.
- 41:04>> I like the mechanics of it.
- 41:05>> Thank you.
- 41:08I probably throw that [ __ ] out.
- 41:12>> I keep I keep the ones that I think
- 41:14aesthetically fit the space. Sometimes I
- 41:16kind of just make some [ __ ] for
- 41:17>> There's a lot of fun thingies in here.
- 41:20>> Appreciate a
- 41:20>> lot of frog elements. Yes, I've I've
- 41:22dissected a frog. I've dissected a worm,
- 41:23but
- 41:24>> Oh, yeah. You say you you dissected
- 41:28Yeah, I've dissected a
- 41:32a critter here or there.
- 41:34>> Yeah,
- 41:34>> but in like a grade school science
- 41:36context. So
- 41:38>> the worm was boring because it's just
- 41:40kind of like dirt
- 41:42>> whereas obviously other
- 41:44>> even like aian like a frog is like
- 41:47there's a lot happening. But then I
- 41:49remember that we this reminded me of
- 41:51dissecting a worm where you slice it
- 41:52open vertically but it's like
- 41:54>> just dirt.
- 41:55>> Just dirt.
- 41:56dirt and hearts.
- 41:57>> It's like,
- 41:58>> oh, right. Like probably a tiny tiny
- 41:59little heart and a huge
- 42:05>> um [ __ ]
- 42:09I uh I did this like nature camp when I
- 42:11was a kid. Uh and that's been very Yeah.
- 42:14I mean, that's been very formative to
- 42:17kind of like my interests and aesthetic
- 42:19and stuff. I'm curious if you've got
- 42:21>> like some [ __ ] like that growing up.
- 42:23>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think so. Um Right.
- 42:24cuz I feel like I what I realized just
- 42:26now is that we both you have much more.
- 42:28You're more prolific about this, but I
- 42:29have some animal and natury material.
- 42:33>> I that's I just love that space. That's
- 42:34why I like
- 42:35>> it's so fun.
- 42:36>> But I like that you you've got you're
- 42:38very prolific in the
- 42:40>> spiral and history space.
- 42:44>> Yeah, that's
- 42:46that's where I cap that's where I, you
- 42:48know, tap out creative.
- 42:49>> That's like a George Washington Carver
- 42:51joke, by the way.
- 42:52>> Yeah. Can you tell me? Uh he uh this he
- 42:55in he he invented all those uses for
- 42:56peanut butter including like shampoo but
- 42:59like before he knew that would work.
- 43:00He's just like rubbing peanuts on his
- 43:04head.
- 43:05That's it. That's the whole idea. I
- 43:08thought that was funny.
- 43:08>> I think that image is so funny.
- 43:10>> It's like incredibly funny.
- 43:11>> I've actually tried to write sketches
- 43:12about George Washington Carver,
- 43:16>> but I I couldn't. Nothing that really
- 43:18landed. Um,
- 43:19>> but I guess my thought there is like
- 43:21sometimes I touch into history and
- 43:23sometimes the animals. What's your
- 43:25what's
- 43:26>> Oh, yeah. I don't know. It's just that I
- 43:28think my parents were really they were
- 43:30like into bringing my sister and I since
- 43:32we were little to different kinds of
- 43:34museums and different kinds of explorer
- 43:37explore oriented institutions and we
- 43:40were in Japan for most of our childhoods
- 43:42which is like
- 43:42>> not same but go on
- 43:44>> really but like there's like a lot of
- 43:45stuff
- 43:46>> for kids and it's very like like
- 43:49culturally I would say Japanese cities
- 43:52have a lot of like spaces for kids to
- 43:55get you know there are some soil under
- 43:59their fingernails and like explore
- 44:00insects and
- 44:02>> this is really fascinating. Oh, how long
- 44:03did you live in Japan? Like the like
- 44:05>> um So,
- 44:07>> so you should have more material about
- 44:08like the Tokugawa Shogunate or
- 44:10something.
- 44:10>> Yeah, I actually have Right. Actually, I
- 44:12have Sorry. I I I'm interested in the
- 44:15Tokugawa Shogunet and I'm really
- 44:17interested in this specific history
- 44:19that's like about the Portuguese and the
- 44:23ultimately the Dutch going to Japan and
- 44:25and you know sort of still conducting
- 44:28trade through this early 17th century.
- 44:29Like I I've like thought about that a
- 44:31lot historically. I've done research on
- 44:32it for papers. It's like something I'm
- 44:35really into. So yeah, there that's like
- 44:36something that I would love to create
- 44:38comedy around. Um I I moved uh so I was
- 44:42born there. I we moved for we lived for
- 44:45a few years in Singapore when I was
- 44:47fourth, fifth, sixth grade. Then we
- 44:48moved back and forth a bit like then
- 44:50ultimately we moved from Japan.
- 44:51>> Singapore to Japan like back and forth
- 44:53>> Japan. Yeah. So after Singapore back to
- 44:55Japan
- 44:58>> then the middle of ninth grade
- 45:01when I was in the middle of nth grade we
- 45:04moved to outside of Philly.
- 45:06>> Oh wait that's Fred,
- 45:07>> right? That's
- 45:08>> that's how we we've tal we talked about
- 45:09this but we're from similar
- 45:11>> we're from like
- 45:13>> around each other like so my dad's from
- 45:15Philadelphia and my parents met in
- 45:17Philadelphia but before my sister and I
- 45:18were born my mom was like who grew up in
- 45:21Japan was like I'm moving
- 45:24>> like
- 45:24>> are you Japanese are you
- 45:25>> I'm I'm a quarter. So, my mom's half but
- 45:28was um born and raised in Japan, but
- 45:31then my grandfather sent all of his
- 45:34daughters to university in the US, which
- 45:36was like in the 70s, obviously. So,
- 45:37>> I I assume you speak Japanese as well.
- 45:39>> Yeah, that's my first language.
- 45:40>> Cool. Neat. That's interesting stuff.
- 45:43>> So, I love language jokes, too. But for
- 45:45some reason, I'm struggling to come up
- 45:46with a lot of Japanese stuff. It's just
- 45:48like I mean I don't mean stuff in
- 45:49Japanese. I mean like stuff about
- 45:50Japanese language for maybe similar
- 45:53reasons where I like can't force myself
- 45:55to write something. I'm like, "Oh, oh,
- 45:57okay." Like, "I want to write a joke
- 45:58about this, but I'm having a hard time
- 46:01figuring out like anything like clarity
- 46:03or punch line." Okay. So, and it's kind
- 46:05of about how because
- 46:07as a kids like like how do I say this?
- 46:11My Japanese is like um
- 46:13[Music]
- 46:14like I don't know dirty talk in Japanese
- 46:17cuz I didn't use it. You know what I
- 46:18mean? Like I I wasn't an adult in Japan,
- 46:21right?
- 46:21>> Or like or like you. Yeah. Yeah. So, um,
- 46:24but so then when I learn like slang like
- 46:27that, it's kind of like later or when I
- 46:28was I spent my junior year of college
- 46:30back in Japan and that's where I got a
- 46:32lot of like slang because I uh cuz
- 46:34before that I was like in middle school
- 46:35and like a little bit of nth grade where
- 46:37I went to an English language school but
- 46:38obviously people were using Japanese
- 46:40slang around me but not quite like
- 46:41sexual yet you know. So then so then
- 46:44anyway so then I later learned like okay
- 46:46there was just something interesting to
- 46:47me about this. So,
- 46:50sorry. I didn't mean to fondle my self.
- 46:53I just So, it's like,
- 46:55>> huh?
- 46:56>> Yeah.
- 46:57>> Oh, no. I was touching my boob because
- 46:59it's about what I'm about to say. So,
- 47:00>> Oh, gotcha.
- 47:03>> My
- 47:05my lung is in a different Sorry. Sorry.
- 47:07My You say nipples.
- 47:10So, the slang for nipples in Japanese,
- 47:13you can say like mame, which means bean.
- 47:17And this is literally from my mom being
- 47:18like, "Your m" you She'll say this
- 47:20sentence in English, except she'll say
- 47:21the word mame, she'll be like, "Your
- 47:22mommies are showing." Like if I'm
- 47:24wearing a shirt or dress for she thinks
- 47:26that they're showing. It's very like mom
- 47:27thing, right? Your mommies are showing.
- 47:29And mame just means bean in Japanese.
- 47:32Like like edamame, you know, it's just
- 47:34>> right. It has a kind of refers to the
- 47:37kind of bean. So like So
- 47:41like bean in English is a slang for
- 47:43[ __ ]
- 47:44>> Oh,
- 47:44>> right. But then also like so slang for
- 47:48[ __ ] in Japanese is
- 47:49>> oh like it's a nude
- 47:54>> um slang for chestnut in Japanese like a
- 47:57chestnut in Japanese wait [ __ ] is other
- 48:00way around. Sorry. Slang for [ __ ] in
- 48:02Japanese is the word for chestnut which
- 48:05is ki.
- 48:06>> Wait are chestnuts different in Japan
- 48:09are chestnuts
- 48:10>> I know. I kind of don't understand it.
- 48:11I'm like what? Yeah. But maybe because
- 48:14it's like maybe they're just like
- 48:15smaller and like cuter cuz it's Japan.
- 48:17>> Like it could be
- 48:18>> like they literally might have a
- 48:19different type of like chestnut.
- 48:20>> Yeah. And maybe so. But like Yeah. Like
- 48:22a little roasted chest
- 48:23>> or bigger clicks. Sorry.
- 48:27>> That's possible. I don't really know.
- 48:30But um so so like
- 48:34so okay. So it's just like a weird web
- 48:36of like connections where like slang the
- 48:39slang in Japanese for clitoris is the
- 48:41word for chestnut.
- 48:43The slang for Clint in English is the
- 48:45word bean.
- 48:48>> The word for bean in Japanese is the
- 48:50slang for nipples. There's like a web
- 48:51here that I'm trying to sort out, but I
- 48:54don't
- 48:54>> I don't know how to connect them or how
- 48:56to make a joke about it. It's just like
- 48:57a
- 48:58>> thing I'm thinking about.
- 49:00>> And then a chest not on a chest
- 49:02something.
- 49:02>> Wait,
- 49:03>> something there.
- 49:04>> Wait, that's so funny cuz I think that
- 49:05the punch line would have to be really
- 49:06fun and like silly like a like that.
- 49:10>> Well, you go really like I'm inspired.
- 49:12No, you go really racist. That's what I
- 49:13was thinking about. I was going and then
- 49:15so I was like literally thinking about
- 49:16being like the way this so then the way
- 49:18but it's crazy cuz like the way you say
- 49:20chestnut in Japanese is is like pika
- 49:22pikachu or like something like just like
- 49:25something in a Japanese accent. And also
- 49:27I want to write a joke about how
- 49:30I I'm allowed to use a Japanese accent.
- 49:34I can
- 49:36>> because you like are from there and
- 49:38Yeah. And like it's interesting. You
- 49:40ever do that on stage and you You could
- 49:42you could do a little bit of a reveal
- 49:43where you do it first in a way that
- 49:46makes the crowd go, "Whoa, what the
- 49:47hell?" And then you go, "Hey, by the
- 49:49way."
- 49:49>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 49:51>> Just kidding.
- 49:52>> Got that ching chong in my blood. Okay.
- 49:55Um I'm allowed to say that. So I'm
- 49:57allowed to say that I to Mandarin for
- 49:59two years. So, uh,
- 50:01>> I'm allowed to say it cuz I technically
- 50:02have the past to say anything with
- 50:05>> As long as I as long as I say it a
- 50:07certain way with a level of plausible
- 50:09deniability,
- 50:10>> right? That's how that goes. Oh, I like
- 50:13your
- 50:13>> I don't use that power.
- 50:15>> No, that's why that's why you're good.
- 50:18That's what makes you like um Yeah, you
- 50:20don't use that power. You're aware of
- 50:22it, but I know what you're talking
- 50:23about. fun to go if there there's an
- 50:25alternate path where I could go evil
- 50:27Benny, which I think is funny, but
- 50:29>> that'd be really interesting. What would
- 50:31spark that
- 50:35>> if I was forced to under fascism? No, I
- 50:37don't think I would do that. I don't No,
- 50:39I'm not. I still wouldn't. I don't know.
- 50:42>> Right. It's like, hey, you're going to
- 50:43be on Kill Tony.
- 50:45>> Yeah.
- 50:45>> Or
- 50:47or
- 50:48>> if Mr. Beast offered me $10,000, I'll
- 50:50say whatever the [ __ ] I just learned
- 50:54Wait, did we talk about this?
- 50:56Because I I'm having a weird flashback
- 50:58because I was talking
- 50:59>> Mr. Beast a little bit maybe
- 51:00>> because I was at You know how talking
- 51:02about we were recently You know how
- 51:04together? Yeah, cuz you were on my show
- 51:05maybe.
- 51:06>> Yes,
- 51:07>> we were talking about this.
- 51:08>> I don't know.
- 51:08>> My relationship to Mr. Beast. My
- 51:10biblical relation. No, no,
- 51:11>> wait. That sounds Wait,
- 51:13>> why? Why does this
- 51:15say more stuff? It's just that I didn't
- 51:17know who he was until I did Stavos's
- 51:20podcast because at the end of it, Stavos
- 51:23was like, "Hey,
- 51:25I have free chocolate. Do you guys want
- 51:27some?"
- 51:27>> Oh, it's festivals.
- 51:29>> I So Mr. Beast like sent him chocolate.
- 51:31What's a festival?
- 51:32>> That's Mr. Beast chocolate.
- 51:33>> Chocolate. It must have been that. So he
- 51:35like sent stuff like chocolate bars,
- 51:37like a box of
- 51:39>> And so anyway, that's how I learned who
- 51:41Mr. Beast was cuz I was like, "What?
- 51:43Like who's Mr. Beast?"
- 51:45So,
- 51:46>> I don't think maybe we talked about
- 51:48that, but I've been I've been doing a
- 51:49bunch of uh like threads about Mr.
- 51:52>> I really like your thread your thread
- 51:54tone.
- 51:56>> You know, you know what I try to I I
- 51:58appreciate that. I know what you're
- 51:59talking about. Um and I wish I could say
- 52:02the same, but I think the way that I
- 52:03maintain my thread tone is I don't look
- 52:06at threads because the [ __ ] Yeah.
- 52:08Yeah. The [ __ ] vibe there is dog
- 52:10[ __ ] Wait, also [ __ ] Sorry. We I feel
- 52:13like there's a lot of
- 52:13>> I had a circle back on.
- 52:14>> There's like threads in our conversation
- 52:16that I've
- 52:18>> I've derailed us from.
- 52:19>> Oh, no. No. Well, it's the idea of um
- 52:21it's something about Japan, but I forget
- 52:23what it was.
- 52:23>> Oh, yeah. Yeah. Oh, [ __ ]
- 52:24>> I had a joke about
- 52:25>> Japan. Japan. Japan.
- 52:26>> Japan. Japan.
- 52:27>> Japanese history. Do you have a joke
- 52:28about the Tokugawa shogunit?
- 52:30>> No, not about the Tokugawa shogunit, but
- 52:33Oh, you know what it was? Um, you know,
- 52:35when people were getting cancelled for
- 52:37like old racist tweets and stuff like
- 52:40that.
- 52:40>> Oh, yeah. I've sort of um several years
- 52:43ago I seated this uh idea uh where I was
- 52:49I kind of put out this apology for my
- 52:52future racist tweets uh about how uh
- 52:57like Japanese people have like really
- 52:58nice like powerful good toilets and
- 53:01whatnot.
- 53:02>> Yeah,
- 53:02>> that means they must all have really
- 53:04messy holes in Japanese or whatever.
- 53:06>> So funny. And so I've got this old tweet
- 53:08from like 2019 loaded up that's me
- 53:10apologizing for saying that about
- 53:12Japanese people. Uh and so then at some
- 53:15point I want to pull the trigger where I
- 53:18kind of do a
- 53:20>> like a racist thing about Japanese
- 53:22people have mess having messy buttholes.
- 53:25>> I think that's interesting, Benny.
- 53:26>> But the thing is that I I don't know if
- 53:28I don't know if right now is the right
- 53:30climate andor time,
- 53:31>> right? It's like the climate the climate
- 53:33was Biden's America.
- 53:34>> Yeah. because there's like a weird
- 53:36pendulum, you know.
- 53:37>> No, no, true. That was Trump's
- 53:38>> Yeah. I mean, I mean, yeah, sorry.
- 53:40>> No, no, sorry. I don't mean to speak
- 53:42over you.
- 53:42>> No, no, no, no. I I I interrupted back
- 53:46cuz I was like the the first one was
- 53:47seated back in like first era of Trump
- 53:50>> Trump, right?
- 53:51>> But I kind of know what you mean. Like
- 53:52the era right now is like, okay, I feel
- 53:54like something I I have a few things to
- 53:57comment on, including toilets, so I'm
- 53:58going to put a pin in that. But the the
- 54:01thing about like comedy culture whatever
- 54:04like is like in the first Trump era and
- 54:07I I was like doing comedy in DC. So I
- 54:10just remember how a little bit how like
- 54:12the Trump interns and stuff like those
- 54:15people changed the landscape of comedy
- 54:18audiences like during the summers during
- 54:19Trump's DC. I remember that. But I think
- 54:23culturally broadly,
- 54:25comedy got like obviously really woke
- 54:29and reactionary towards Trump. And then
- 54:31there was like a few things like out of
- 54:33that which was like a reaction to that
- 54:35or like rolling eyes at like
- 54:38quote unquote woke comedy or like
- 54:41progressively or like progressive like
- 54:43claptoriented comedy. And I understand
- 54:45why those reactions happened even though
- 54:47there were like like you know like
- 54:49anti-PC
- 54:50>> likeuh trends even though that's like
- 54:54lame and not thoughtful like I
- 54:56understand how those grew out of like
- 54:58the first reaction to Trump and so I
- 55:00feel like but then so then I think now
- 55:03however the tone is getting so bizarre
- 55:06and fraught that it's like
- 55:08>> actually if somebody does something
- 55:10that's playing with PC lines
- 55:13>> I wonder if it just gets It's more
- 55:15politicized. It's like [ __ ] Like the
- 55:16tone right now
- 55:18>> this month is like [ __ ] everything's
- 55:20[ __ ]
- 55:22>> It's serious, right? So, it's funny like
- 55:24I was going to say like to play around
- 55:25with and I can feel that even when I'm
- 55:27being kind of a heel in the extent that
- 55:30I can be like if I have a joke about
- 55:32like
- 55:34like I have a joke about it's like
- 55:35stupid joke about how the reason I
- 55:36shouldn't have a gun but then I can just
- 55:38like feel more tension around it now or
- 55:40like and or like
- 55:42I have a joke a line about
- 55:46Obama
- 55:47and nature documentaries and how it's
- 55:51like oh here comes Obama once again. and
- 55:52he like narrated one. So, it's like here
- 55:54comes Obama once again claiming a white
- 55:56man's job,
- 55:57>> okay,
- 55:58>> and step aside, David Adamro. But the
- 56:00point is that now I feel more tension
- 56:02around that line just because of the
- 56:03like
- 56:05what's going on.
- 56:07>> And I feel like in Biden's America,
- 56:10people could be more like playfully
- 56:12racist,
- 56:13>> right? culturally.
- 56:14>> Oh, at least at least with what you're
- 56:15doing, there's like a there's a certain
- 56:17clear irony where now it's like the
- 56:20irony is like a little bit like people
- 56:21are like,
- 56:21>> "All right, hold on. What are we talking
- 56:23about?" And some people like for real
- 56:25believe XYZ thing in like an earnest way
- 56:28and it's like it's like dangerous. Um
- 56:31yeah, I do think um I think that under
- 56:34also I think we're uh
- 56:35>> sorry,
- 56:36>> we're coming close to an hour, but I um
- 56:37I think that under the first Trump
- 56:39administration um there was major major
- 56:43push back that happened in like the
- 56:47second year and then also again in like
- 56:49the fourth year.
- 56:50>> Right. Right. Interesting.
- 56:51>> Like the Me Too movement and all that
- 56:53cultural backlash was the second year in
- 56:56and then like the George Floyd protest
- 56:58etc was like the fourth fourth year,
- 57:00right? 2020.
- 57:01>> And I think right now into this new
- 57:02Trump thing, um like I think he's really
- 57:07seeding
- 57:08uh seed seeding uh not ceed but s e d uh
- 57:14seeding
- 57:14>> s. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I see.
- 57:15>> Planting the seeds. Um, there's a lot of
- 57:19[ __ ] cultural
- 57:22uh dog [ __ ] and kindling that I think
- 57:25like I think that like there's going to
- 57:26be mass I think there's going to be a
- 57:29mass protest and movement. I think
- 57:30something um we but there's like a we
- 57:32need like a spark or something.
- 57:34>> Yeah, I think that there will be a spark
- 57:36some kind of catalyst and it's a little
- 57:38bit like I don't
- 57:40>> it's like what is it going to be? Yeah.
- 57:41And at what cost? Like
- 57:43>> and in some stuff it's like, well, why
- 57:45is that not the spark yet? Or but I
- 57:47think there's a lot of there's a lot of
- 57:48like straws that are being put on the
- 57:51camel and it's like, damn, that camel's
- 57:52still going. But uh
- 57:54>> I know wild.
- 57:54>> They don't have but like uh you see
- 57:57videos of people getting abducted from
- 57:59their homes or not from their homes or
- 58:02whatever.
- 58:03>> From wherever. Yeah. Yeah.
- 58:04>> That stuff I know, right? And I'm Oh,
- 58:08that's my other thing. You asked me how
- 58:09I've been or what's new earlier.
- 58:11>> I've been really obsessed with like the
- 58:13Epstein stuff.
- 58:14>> Oh, yeah.
- 58:17>> Yeah. Pretty good.
- 58:19>> Yeah. No, that that I'm excited about.
- 58:22>> I know. I'm excited about it.
- 58:24>> I do think that and maybe you'll agree
- 58:26with me here. I do think that like a lot
- 58:29of this stuff uh
- 58:32maybe part of why stuff hasn't really
- 58:34like fully blown up quite yet is because
- 58:37as a culture collectively we're kind of
- 58:39going let's see what happens with that
- 58:41real quick. Let's just wait a second and
- 58:43see.
- 58:44>> Somebody's got the files. Are they going
- 58:46to come out? Like like I think like it'd
- 58:48be a little bit silly right now to do a
- 58:50mass um
- 58:53like movement until we have all the
- 58:56information. You know what I mean?
- 58:57>> Right.
- 58:58>> Like I don't know.
- 58:58>> Right. Right. Right. Right. Right.
- 58:59Right. Right. And
- 59:02unnecessarily frame
- 59:06or like inaccurately frame Trump or
- 59:07something cuz that's just worst for
- 59:09worse for the left.
- 59:10>> Yeah. But that's there's almost I mean
- 59:13>> there's almost no [ __ ] way that like
- 59:15he's there like He's whatever. Anyway,
- 59:18>> I know. Sorry. I didn't mean to go on
- 59:19this. Something that I've been my new
- 59:22little thing is that I'll listen to
- 59:25>> the news like all day in kind of a
- 59:27hyperfocus way. That's like maybe
- 59:30unhealthy, but that's what I've been
- 59:31doing.
- 59:32>> This This is now pod save America, but I
- 59:34guess uh
- 59:36>> which I just discovered kind of. I think
- 59:38the guy's hot. Okay, continue.
- 59:40Just uh kind of the thought being though
- 59:42like you know if it does come out
- 59:44officially or whatever I think that that
- 59:46also will rally a lot of independence
- 59:50and such
- 59:51>> to be to like I think that like I think
- 59:54like we're just kind of waiting for like
- 59:55a stronger case to be made for the broad
- 59:57you know what I mean.
- 59:58>> Right. Right. Right. Right. Right.
- 59:59>> Yeah.
- 1:00:01>> Also we're at about about an hour. I'm
- 1:00:03kind of wrapping up on my political
- 1:00:05point. Would you like to add to that
- 1:00:06political space? I kind of just ranted
- 1:00:08at the end.
- 1:00:08>> Oh uh no. Well, um there's like a few
- 1:00:12things that I feel like we started to
- 1:00:13talk about.
- 1:00:14>> Yeah. You got a couple tie up all your
- 1:00:16loose ends.
- 1:00:17>> We got Japan.
- 1:00:18>> Japan.
- 1:00:19>> We got formative stuff going on.
- 1:00:22>> No, I guess we just like went to a lot
- 1:00:23of, you know, like we would go, it's not
- 1:00:26like we were a huge camping family or
- 1:00:27that my parents are particularly
- 1:00:28outdoorsy, but we would go camping. They
- 1:00:30like definitely
- 1:00:33rose like um
- 1:00:37you know I was like really into crystals
- 1:00:39as a kid so I would get a lot of Yeah.
- 1:00:41Like into like in a geological sense. Oh
- 1:00:43my god. Look at all these rocks.
- 1:00:45>> Yeah.
- 1:00:45>> This is beautiful.
- 1:00:47>> Yeah. I feel like you and I had similar
- 1:00:49family values.
- 1:00:50>> Yeah. I was going to ask what like do
- 1:00:51you have a similar Oh, sorry to touch
- 1:00:53your snake.
- 1:00:53>> No, no, no, no. Please.
- 1:00:55>> Yeah. Yeah. I think so. What do you
- 1:00:57have? Like how how were you?
- 1:00:58>> I always loved like um like we would
- 1:01:01always go to like the natural history
- 1:01:02museum and stuff. Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
- 1:01:04Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:01:05>> That's really cool.
- 1:01:06>> That's them.
- 1:01:09>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's the squad. Uh I
- 1:01:12forget what that was.
- 1:01:13>> Oh my god. It might be my 18th birthday
- 1:01:17or something.
- 1:01:17>> Oh yeah. Do you know where this was?
- 1:01:19>> Yeah. That's out of Benihana. Yeah. We
- 1:01:21went to for my 18th birthday.
- 1:01:22>> How cute. Wait, I met somebody. Did I
- 1:01:24meet Remember when we were in Philly?
- 1:01:26>> You might have met my sister.
- 1:01:28>> I think I met your sister. Yes.
- 1:01:30>> She was at the show.
- 1:01:31>> Yeah. When did I Which show did we do it
- 1:01:33in Philly together?
- 1:01:33>> It was like around a holiday. It was
- 1:01:34around Thanksgiving, I want to say,
- 1:01:36because Cameron was with you. He was
- 1:01:38like staying with your family.
- 1:01:39>> Oh. Um, in South Philly in uh
- 1:01:43>> Well, we did a show.
- 1:01:44>> It was at a house. It's like a like a
- 1:01:45jazz house show.
- 1:01:47>> What? This is awesome. No, no, we did a
- 1:01:48show together at what's it called? This
- 1:01:50is that bar that's by Ridden House.
- 1:01:51Fergies.
- 1:01:53And then we went, sorry I just like
- 1:01:56touched the microphone. Um, then we went
- 1:01:58to uh uh
- 1:02:00>> this Irish bar near the art museum in
- 1:02:02Burtown.
- 1:02:04>> Yeah. Okay. Yeah. You my younger sister.
- 1:02:06Yeah. Hannah. Yeah. It was me, you,
- 1:02:09David Fineberg, Lauren Ellis, Cameron
- 1:02:11Bradford,
- 1:02:12>> and some of my old friend. I forgot you
- 1:02:13were uh
- 1:02:14>> really random that I was like part of I
- 1:02:16don't think I was with anybody that I
- 1:02:19mean I know you guys,
- 1:02:21>> but Oh, I No, I know. My sister
- 1:02:24lives lives near there. So, yeah, my
- 1:02:27sister lives near the art museum.
- 1:02:28>> Oh, so does so does my sister.
- 1:02:30>> Oh, I maybe that came up.
- 1:02:34>> Yeah, maybe.
- 1:02:35>> Interesting. That's where I was born
- 1:02:37over that way.
- 1:02:38>> Oh, really? Oh, how cool.
- 1:02:39>> Then we moved out to the
- 1:02:41>> to the Burbles.
- 1:02:42>> Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:02:44>> Um interesting.
- 1:02:46>> Near uh do you mind doxing which suburb
- 1:02:49is that?
- 1:02:50>> Oh, sure. Um um
- 1:02:52>> I was in Blue Bell.
- 1:02:53>> Okay. Blue Bell. I know because that's
- 1:02:54where I took driving lessons. So my
- 1:02:56parents are like Bidmar area. Like I uh
- 1:02:59>> they they live near Villanova and
- 1:03:02Bidmar.
- 1:03:04>> So
- 1:03:05>> cool. I kind of know I kind
- 1:03:08Lancaster Avenue or Moore.
- 1:03:10>> Totally. Totally. I have a I have a fake
- 1:03:13I feel like I had a crush on a girl that
- 1:03:15went to Binmar or something.
- 1:03:17>> Oh yeah.
- 1:03:17>> Right. The Was that a private school
- 1:03:19that one? the
- 1:03:20>> BMAR is the university.
- 1:03:21>> Oh,
- 1:03:22>> but there's a few but there's a few like
- 1:03:24there are private also girls schools
- 1:03:27around there including Agnes Irwin and
- 1:03:28there's another one that starts with a B
- 1:03:29that I'm forgetting. And then I went to
- 1:03:31Radner High School.
- 1:03:33>> Oh, sure. I I knew some people at a
- 1:03:35synagogue who went to
- 1:03:36>> Oh, really? Small world.
- 1:03:38>> Yeah. I think we might be different
- 1:03:40ages, though.
- 1:03:41>> Yeah, I'm a little older, I think.
- 1:03:42>> Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:03:42>> I'm I'm 54.
- 1:03:46>> I'm 31. I don't know. I don't
- 1:03:47>> No, I'm 37.
- 1:03:48>> Okay. Yeah.
- 1:03:49>> So, so that means that maybe
- 1:03:52>> So, like I don't know. So, maybe like we
- 1:03:55So, obviously we didn't overlap in terms
- 1:03:57of high school years, but like
- 1:03:59>> Yeah.
- 1:04:00>> somebody maybe like a coach. Not that I
- 1:04:03played any sports, but like like like a
- 1:04:04coach went to your school that also
- 1:04:07coached like something along the
- 1:04:10>> theater. I bet if we like went through
- 1:04:11our Instagram friends, you'd be like
- 1:04:14there would be like a single one that
- 1:04:16would be like, "Oh, that guy. Oh my god.
- 1:04:18My
- 1:04:18>> You know what I mean?
- 1:04:19>> 20 year
- 1:04:22high school reunion is next year.
- 1:04:24>> Oh wow. Cool.
- 1:04:25>> My friends and I
- 1:04:26>> Do you like going to those?
- 1:04:27>> Uh no, but I've No, I have two things to
- 1:04:30say about that. I've only been to one
- 1:04:32cuz one of the other like the other one
- 1:04:34the like what like the 10 year I was in
- 1:04:37I think I was like doing comedy or
- 1:04:40something or but anyway I couldn't go.
- 1:04:41But then um the five year I went to and
- 1:04:44I remember it was like so crazy because
- 1:04:47nobody I also I didn't drink in high
- 1:04:49school. My friends and I were pretty
- 1:04:50nerdy but we had each other. And so my
- 1:04:53takeaway from the 5-year high school
- 1:04:55reunion was like everybody got really
- 1:04:58drunk but we were like kind of just we
- 1:05:00were like just out of college. Everybody
- 1:05:02got really drunk and nobody knew how to
- 1:05:04drink around each other cuz the last
- 1:05:05time we all knew each other we were like
- 1:05:07children really. So, it was such a
- 1:05:10weird, it was just like an extended
- 1:05:11party feeling that was kind of different
- 1:05:13cuz it was all these people that I had
- 1:05:15sort of forgot existed, but some people
- 1:05:16I still had like hang-ups about
- 1:05:18privately, you know, and then now I feel
- 1:05:22so I feel so far away and I have no real
- 1:05:24interest in anybody, but I do have like
- 1:05:27the genuine desire to
- 1:05:30just go and be really hot and
- 1:05:31successful.
- 1:05:33And I'm not kidding about that. Like
- 1:05:35that's the only reason I'm going. So, or
- 1:05:38kind of laugh with my friends about
- 1:05:39what's going on. But how about how about
- 1:05:40you? Have you been to one?
- 1:05:41>> I've been to five and 10 year. Yeah.
- 1:05:44>> Were they fun?
- 1:05:45>> I uh actually did really enjoy them
- 1:05:46because I felt like
- 1:05:47>> people grow up. I feel Yes. People grow
- 1:05:49up and um I mean I understand especially
- 1:05:52at the 10 year where it's like oh
- 1:05:54everybody is chilled out like the I mean
- 1:05:57the five year there were certainly still
- 1:05:58a little bit of hang-ups but
- 1:05:59>> did it have like a party feeling? That's
- 1:06:00what
- 1:06:01>> the fivey year was more Yeah. The five
- 1:06:02people were younger.
- 1:06:03>> You did a bar crawl for the 5y year.
- 1:06:05>> Right. Exactly.
- 1:06:06>> Absolutely. A party.
- 1:06:07>> But yeah, even then, sorry I speak over
- 1:06:09you.
- 1:06:09>> No, for sure. No, it's it still had a it
- 1:06:10still had a party vibe for the We also
- 1:06:12did a bar. We like rented out a bar for
- 1:06:14the tenure and like
- 1:06:16>> Oh, that sounds nice. It sounds honestly
- 1:06:17pretty nice.
- 1:06:18>> Absolutely. A party. I drank a bit. I
- 1:06:20don't us I try not to drink that much,
- 1:06:22but uh
- 1:06:22>> yeah,
- 1:06:23>> you know, seeing some old some of those
- 1:06:24old folks, you know, it's fun.
- 1:06:26>> Nice like opportunity, too. And I'm kind
- 1:06:28of I'm like sort of like
- 1:06:31>> I don't know. I wasn't bullied or
- 1:06:33anything. I was just pretty quiet and I
- 1:06:34had moved from Japan so I feel like I
- 1:06:35wasn't myself or didn't know like I felt
- 1:06:37so
- 1:06:41not perceived in high school which is
- 1:06:44okay with me
- 1:06:45>> which is okay with me at the time.
- 1:06:46>> I still don't need to be perceived by
- 1:06:48them but I'm feel so
- 1:06:52thankfully like not like that was my
- 1:06:54peak of my life you know.
- 1:06:55>> Oh yeah. And uh so I'm kind of curious
- 1:06:58about going there with my friends and
- 1:07:01obviously at my age too like a lot of
- 1:07:03people have not just a baby but you know
- 1:07:05several
- 1:07:06>> Oh yeah I thought that was really
- 1:07:07interesting where it's like I I at the
- 1:07:1010 year people were like engaged in
- 1:07:11stuff and then by 15 is uh
- 1:07:15>> Oh yeah. Is it coming up? Yeah. And so
- 1:07:17it's like um I think that'll be
- 1:07:18interesting to be like oh [ __ ]
- 1:07:19>> they're like kids
- 1:07:20>> like this is my child and I'm like oh
- 1:07:22[ __ ]
- 1:07:23>> Yeah. They've you see like people bring
- 1:07:25multiple kids and stuff like to
- 1:07:27>> Well, not cuz I've only been to the
- 1:07:28five-year, but I know that we're going
- 1:07:31next year. So, I know I know that my
- 1:07:33like I just know through the grapevine
- 1:07:36or a friend of mine or two, like
- 1:07:38everybody in my close friend group
- 1:07:39except for one person has a baby, one
- 1:07:41person has two. No, like one person has
- 1:07:44four kids. So, um yeah, I bet like
- 1:07:47that's pretty common. And I'll Yeah, I
- 1:07:51have to like
- 1:07:53Anyway, no, I'm curious.
- 1:07:54>> Yeah, that's fascinating. Well, I I
- 1:07:56could talk on this forever.
- 1:07:58>> Yeah, I'm sorry. We
- 1:07:59>> know what I mean. I in high school I was
- 1:08:00like a very divisive character.
- 1:08:02>> You were divisive.
- 1:08:02>> Oh, yeah. Interesting.
- 1:08:03>> I was doing a lot of like [ __ ]
- 1:08:07>> I was trying to be
- 1:08:08>> divisive in like a loved way.
- 1:08:10>> No, see that's the the divisive comes in
- 1:08:13where some people loved it, some people
- 1:08:15really hated me. What about faculty?
- 1:08:18>> That's going to be divisive as well.
- 1:08:19It's going to depend on the teacher. I I
- 1:08:21was doing a lot of like um like kind of
- 1:08:25prank oriented.
- 1:08:26>> Oh, I see. I see. I see. I can see that.
- 1:08:27You know what I mean? And that like some
- 1:08:28people some people will really if you if
- 1:08:31you liked what I who I was pranking and
- 1:08:33why and how then you like you know what
- 1:08:35I mean,
- 1:08:35>> right? That's so interesting. I can kind
- 1:08:37of
- 1:08:38>> I bet people had crushes on you cuz like
- 1:08:40people were drawn to that kind of
- 1:08:41energy, you know?
- 1:08:43I not the [ __ ] that's not something I
- 1:08:46was able to read at the time. I mean I
- 1:08:47did I had a high school girlfriend at
- 1:08:49the end.
- 1:08:49>> Oh yeah.
- 1:08:49>> But that's not something I
- 1:08:51>> like I like that's like I don't know
- 1:08:53when I learned how to read that. Do you
- 1:08:55know when you learned how to read that?
- 1:08:57>> I don't know cuz it's kind of
- 1:08:58interesting, right? Because it's like
- 1:08:59maybe gendered but also
- 1:09:03I didn't I was just like so quiet in
- 1:09:06high school that I don't think so. I I
- 1:09:09feel like I read I learned to read it
- 1:09:10maybe
- 1:09:13in middle later middle school, but I
- 1:09:15don't think I like had that much going
- 1:09:17on, you know, in high in high school at
- 1:09:18least. And I had this whole thing happen
- 1:09:21because like you're familiar with the
- 1:09:22general just like the mainline area of
- 1:09:24this like for high what year was it?
- 1:09:28Junior year. It was like this time where
- 1:09:32it was like sophomore semiformmal and I
- 1:09:34had not been asked out and
- 1:09:39um my and I had a my I was crying to my
- 1:09:43mom and she
- 1:09:46had this conversation with me about
- 1:09:47beauty standards and it's like a pretty
- 1:09:49white area
- 1:09:50>> and um like I didn't even I wasn't even
- 1:09:54aware of that really. It was like
- 1:09:56obviously it's a pretty white high
- 1:09:57school, somewhat diverse, but it's like
- 1:10:01and I had friends of color in my friend
- 1:10:03group, but like everybody else had been
- 1:10:06asked out on a date. So I just but I was
- 1:10:08also like very quiet and didn't really
- 1:10:09talk to boys that much either. So like,
- 1:10:11so this whole thing happened and then my
- 1:10:14friends arranged this guy to be my date,
- 1:10:17somebody that we knew or like the boys
- 1:10:19that they were friends with were friends
- 1:10:21with. And um I ended up he ended up
- 1:10:23being my little like boyfriend senior
- 1:10:25year, but you know, we were like
- 1:10:27children. But um that was like my main
- 1:10:31relationship to that stuff like I would
- 1:10:34think as still in high school. I was
- 1:10:36just really quiet and really enjoyed
- 1:10:39theater.
- 1:10:41But I feel like
- 1:10:42>> Did you do theater?
- 1:10:44>> Yeah.
- 1:10:44>> Okay.
- 1:10:45>> Like
- 1:10:48I like to an extent that I think that
- 1:10:50really helped me so much. It helped me
- 1:10:53like like I won some award at the end. I
- 1:10:55won this like workshop like actors
- 1:10:57workshop award and my mom thinks that it
- 1:10:59saved my life. I wasn't by any means
- 1:11:01like depressed. I think I was just
- 1:11:03really quiet and I think it was hard for
- 1:11:05me to adjust from coming from a small
- 1:11:08kind of like Monasuri type school, but
- 1:11:10for high school and middle schoolers in
- 1:11:12Japan to
- 1:11:13>> um
- 1:11:14>> like a big public high school. It was
- 1:11:16like really tough. So I feel like I was
- 1:11:18so not divisive like I was just like a
- 1:11:21quiet person like a little
- 1:11:24>> like a mouse.
- 1:11:25>> Church mouse.
- 1:11:25>> Yeah, I was a church mouse.
- 1:11:26>> That's fascinating. And now and now
- 1:11:28we're both
- 1:11:29>> on stage.
- 1:11:30>> What the hell? What the hell?
- 1:11:32>> Random
- 1:11:33>> folks.
- 1:11:34>> Anyway.
- 1:11:34>> Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:11:36>> Yeah. I mean, um, we kind of kept going
- 1:11:38because we had we had more to we had
- 1:11:41more to say. We had more to to chew on.
- 1:11:44>> Yeah.
- 1:11:44>> Uh, listen, I could keep going if you're
- 1:11:46interested.
- 1:11:47>> I have to sort out my life right now,
- 1:11:49>> but I appreciate the opportunity. I
- 1:11:51would otherwise.
- 1:11:52>> I Yes. And you know what I'll do is I'll
- 1:11:54I'll once this podcast if this ever has
- 1:11:59enough clout that people want to do it
- 1:12:00of their own valition, I'll ask you to
- 1:12:03come back in a group setting and then be
- 1:12:05fun.
- 1:12:05>> Then everybody will be like, "Yes, let's
- 1:12:06schedule it."
- 1:12:07>> That sounds Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think
- 1:12:09this is such a fun premise for podcast.
- 1:12:10>> Cloud is a bludgeon. Do you have
- 1:12:12anything to um
- 1:12:13>> and a blessing?
- 1:12:15>> Not a blessing. It's a budgeon.
- 1:12:16>> No, I said and a blessing. I heard you
- 1:12:18correctly. Not to
- 1:12:21>> sorry a blessing. I think cloud should
- 1:12:23be edible.
- 1:12:25>> What?
- 1:12:26>> I think clout should be edible.
- 1:12:28>> Yeah, it sounds like something that is
- 1:12:29edible. By the way,
- 1:12:31>> oh I spread clout on my
- 1:12:34>> toast or
- 1:12:35>> like if you have more clout, you should
- 1:12:36always be satiated,
- 1:12:38>> right? And if you have less clout in the
- 1:12:42true sense of the word, you are perhaps
- 1:12:45more satiated spiritually but less
- 1:12:47satiated like
- 1:12:50fiscally or in Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Like
- 1:12:53>> No, I think it should literally be like
- 1:12:56food. Anyh who, I uh What do you have to
- 1:12:59>> Yeah. What do I have to promote?
- 1:13:03>> I have two things to promote.
- 1:13:04>> I'm out of my mind. One is that please
- 1:13:09I'm sorry. Can you watch my specials on
- 1:13:11YouTube? It's free. It's a half hour.
- 1:13:13>> I know you had a special.
- 1:13:14>> Oh yeah, it's a little free half hour.
- 1:13:15It's called um That is It got recently
- 1:13:19re-released through Comedy Dynamics, so
- 1:13:21it's re
- 1:13:24um touched up and everything. It's on
- 1:13:25YouTube. It's called That is My Horse.
- 1:13:28Um it's 30 minutes for free on
- 1:13:30YouTube.com. I filmed it in Raleigh and
- 1:13:32Dun, North Carolina. And um secondly,
- 1:13:36um I'm going to be at Union Hall
- 1:13:38headlining on September
- 1:13:4322nd. It's a Monday, 7:30 p.m.

- 1:13:48in the thingy. I'll also watch it. I got
- 1:13:50to check that out.
- 1:13:51>> Oh, thanks. Yeah,
- 1:13:52>> go to the
- 1:13:53>> uh Yes, go to the show. Oh, wait. Also,
- 1:13:55I'm going to be I always forget to do
- 1:13:57this. I'm gonna be in uh Denver and
- 1:14:00Chicago and San Francisco in September.
- 1:14:04Come on out.
- 1:14:05>> Bye. I should I should always I should
- 1:14:07do that at the beginning or whatever.
- 1:14:08Anyway, peace.
- 1:14:10>> Bye. Keep it crispy. Okay. Okay. Thanks
- 1:14:13so much for having me.
