- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to Girls Gone Hallmark, a Hallmark review podcast. I'm
- 0:02Speaker 1: Megan and I'm a longtime Hallmark fan. I am Wendy.
- 0:05Speaker 1: I'm a former homerk hater. On today's episode, we are
- 0:08Speaker 1: discussing True Justice and I for An Eye, the second
- 0:11Speaker 1: installment in the True Justice mystery franchise, which originally aired
- 0:15Speaker 1: on Saturday May twenty third and is now streaming on
- 0:18Speaker 1: Hallmark Plus. Last week we discussed Hannah Swinson Best Served Cold,
- 0:24Speaker 1: and we said, I want a true crime podcast movie. Yeah?
- 0:28Speaker 1: Share email, She says, girls, I just listen to your
- 0:30Speaker 1: review of the latest Hannah Winson movie, which I really enjoyed.
- 0:33Speaker 1: You mentioned that it would be great if Hallmark had
- 0:36Speaker 1: a show about a true crime podcast. Believe it or not,
- 0:39Speaker 1: they did do one a few years ago that has
- 0:41Speaker 1: five episodes, five movies. And guess who starred, Wendy. Guess
- 0:46Speaker 1: who the star of that series is. I read the email.
- 0:48Speaker 1: It's Hannah, It's Hannah Swinson, It's Alison Sweeney and Benjamin Airs.
- 0:54Speaker 1: That's right. What's it called, though, the Chronicle Mysteries. That
- 0:58Speaker 1: sounds like a newspaper. That's what I thought two Jerrey says,
- 1:01Speaker 1: I thought it was good. You should check it out,
- 1:02Speaker 1: maybe do a review on the first episode in all
- 1:04Speaker 1: of your free time. L oh l, Well, hey, I
- 1:07Speaker 1: like that idea. You know, we could do a first
- 1:10Speaker 1: impression episode if we have time this summer, when we
- 1:13Speaker 1: build out a summer schedule. Oh gosh, we have to
- 1:16Speaker 1: do that. It's like the middle of meg I know,
- 1:19Speaker 1: I no put it on the list. Megan's fanning herself
- 1:25Speaker 1: right now. We're recording fourteen episodes today, not that many,
- 1:28Speaker 1: but something close. Yeah, only seven. It doesn't even put
- 1:32Speaker 1: us ahead. I don't know what's happening over here. I
- 1:34Speaker 1: don't either. Hey, why don't we jump right into this
- 1:38Speaker 1: movie with a synopsis. Our warriors work to exonerate a
- 1:43Speaker 1: mother wrongly accused of murdering another mother in the parent
- 1:48Speaker 1: school coalition. This installent brings in a new director, with
- 1:52Speaker 1: Lisa Soper stepping behind the camera for an Eye for
- 1:54Speaker 1: an Eye. Her previous credits include Riverdale, Pretty Little, Liar's
- 1:57Speaker 1: Original Sin, and, most recently, several episodes of Ripple. Can
- 2:02Speaker 1: I Stop you there? This is why I love news
- 2:04Speaker 1: and notes. This one's a little bit longer because there's
- 2:06Speaker 1: a lot of players in this in this movie, as
- 2:09Speaker 1: main characters. Right, it's a it's a ensemble cast. That's
- 2:12Speaker 1: the word I was looking for. But the director, Lisa Soper,
- 2:17Speaker 1: I'm reading through what she's worked on before, Riverdale, Pretty
- 2:21Speaker 1: Little Liar's Original Sin, which was on HBO, and Ripple.
- 2:25Speaker 1: These are all shows that have a mystery element to it. Yeah,
- 2:31Speaker 1: I think it's important to show that, to tell her
- 2:35Speaker 1: audiences about the directing. In my notes, it's pretty damn good.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Hallmark fan favorite Nikki Deloche shares screenplay credit for True
- 2:44Speaker 1: Justice Ie for an Eye, alongside writing partner Megan McNulty.
- 2:48Speaker 1: This marks Nicky's fifth writing credit, with the duo also
- 2:53Speaker 1: pinning the forthcoming third installment in the True franchise. In
- 2:58Speaker 1: the True Justice Franchise, Catherine McNamara returns as Casey, marking
- 3:03Speaker 1: her first return to Hallmark Channel since the debut installment
- 3:06Speaker 1: of the True Justice mystery franchise. Do This Next One?
- 3:09Speaker 1: I can never say this guy? Marky and Russiak returns
- 3:11Speaker 1: as Eli. Most recently Hallmark fans saw Him and Nelly
- 3:13Speaker 1: Knows Mysteries All Banners of Murder. Marissa McIntyre returns as Sarah,
- 3:19Speaker 1: marking her third project for Hamemark Alexander Nuniaz returns as
- 3:22Speaker 1: private investigator Liam. Prior to Hallmark, viewers may recognize him
- 3:26Speaker 1: from a recent role in Memory of a Killer. Do
- 3:28Speaker 1: you know that show? I don't. It's on Fox. It
- 3:31Speaker 1: has McDreamy from Crazy Anatomy as the lead. Oh, McDreamy.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Nicki Deloche co stars as Professor Ambrose. Nicki will start
- 3:41Speaker 1: in the fourthcoming The Greek Isle. This is a summer movie.
- 3:46Speaker 1: We're talking about it today, June movie. I haven't even
- 3:49Speaker 1: looked at those Yeah, and it's Greek Isle ais l e.
- 3:54Speaker 1: You know where that movie's headed, right, She's gotta get married.
- 3:57Speaker 1: That's the whole thing she's got to go order to
- 3:59Speaker 1: inherit fake merit ooh, fake datings ooh, more intense cousin.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Benjamin Air's co stars as da Quinn. Hallmark recently saw
- 4:08Speaker 1: Airs in the first season of Hope Balley eighteen seventy
- 4:10Speaker 1: four on Hallmark Plus. We covered it all. I would
- 4:13Speaker 1: highly recommend giving that a what I agree? Do you
- 4:15Speaker 1: think Hope Fally eighteen seventy four will come to Hallmark
- 4:18Speaker 1: Channel Linear? Yes I do. Hey, Weddy, what is your
- 4:21Speaker 1: first impression of true justice? And I for an eye.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Eli and Liam somehow investigate crimes by committing other smaller crimes.
- 4:30Speaker 1: But they are easily my favorite melduo of twenty twenty six. Oh,
- 4:35Speaker 1: my first impression is just go along for the ride
- 4:37Speaker 1: as my new mystery watching motto, and it's working for me.
- 4:40Speaker 1: It does work. I tried it too. I even texted you.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I said, I think I'm just gonna follow that advice
- 4:47Speaker 1: to just go along for the ride. I'm not gonna
- 4:48Speaker 1: try to figure this out. And you said, good idea,
- 4:51Speaker 1: because you had already seen the movie. Yeah, let's talk
- 4:54Speaker 1: what we liked that we talked about it is in
- 4:57Speaker 1: the first movie. This Scooby You gang chemistry totally works
- 5:02Speaker 1: for me. Yep, I love an ensemble cast like this
- 5:06Speaker 1: when we're dealing with trying to figure out mysteries. Yes,
- 5:11Speaker 1: to your point, there's lots of different pairings within the
- 5:14Speaker 1: larger group. Yes, we have the four plus a fifth
- 5:17Speaker 1: that we'll talk about, and then we have our kind
- 5:19Speaker 1: of adult mentors, but they all kind of partner in
- 5:23Speaker 1: different ways, like Eli and Liam, Eli and Casey, Liam
- 5:27Speaker 1: and Sarah, Sarah and Casey. The DA works independently with
- 5:30Speaker 1: the gang. Yeah, the professor it's really nice. The chemistry
- 5:34Speaker 1: is fantastic. I wrote in my notes, I believe it
- 5:37Speaker 1: is the secret sauce to the franchise A one hundred percent.
- 5:41Speaker 1: The storytelling is really good. I like the writing, but
- 5:45Speaker 1: I think it is secondary to the chemistry of this cast.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I agree with you, if I may say, I thought
- 5:52Speaker 1: the directing on this installment was incredible and I loved
- 5:56Speaker 1: noting genuinely, not just based on your comment what the
- 6:00Speaker 1: director had worked on. Because the choice to include the
- 6:02Speaker 1: characters in the scenes where they're narrating what happened it
- 6:05Speaker 1: was amazing or what might have happened. It adds such
- 6:09Speaker 1: an incredible layer of realism and understanding to this mystery.
- 6:15Speaker 1: When you see them standing over the body. It was
- 6:18Speaker 1: just so cool. They utilized it in such great ways.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I loved it. Yeah, I love that too. Yeah, don't
- 6:25Speaker 1: just don't tell me what happened is tell me about
- 6:28Speaker 1: the clues. Don't tell me about the facts of the case.
- 6:30Speaker 1: It just becomes more. Yeah, it was good to say anything.
- 6:33Speaker 1: It was good stuff. It was good stuff. I am
- 6:35Speaker 1: going to go back to my first impression and talk
- 6:36Speaker 1: about Eli and Liam. I'm telling you, I love the
- 6:40Speaker 1: banter between these two characters. It feels the most natural
- 6:45Speaker 1: in this movie. Their scenes have a rhythm that is
- 6:48Speaker 1: not like Hallmark polished script. It's giving like they've known
- 6:55Speaker 1: each other shore a really long time. It's me they
- 6:58Speaker 1: have like a like jokey kind of looseness. There is
- 7:04Speaker 1: a vibe there that makes this movie feel younger and
- 7:07Speaker 1: more contemporary. Yes, yes, they kind of like joke because
- 7:11Speaker 1: Eli Liam's a little cooler than Eli. Eli's a little
- 7:15Speaker 1: more buttoned up. Yeah yeah, yeah, kind of like riff
- 7:18Speaker 1: on that a little bit. I thought it was funny.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Let me talk about Marcus. Who's Marcus Casey's brother, and
- 7:25Speaker 1: that's that you did not do what I did, which
- 7:28Speaker 1: is rewatch true justice prior to watching this movie. No,
- 7:31Speaker 1: you think I have time for that? Well I didn't
- 7:33Speaker 1: really either, but I I remember just the broadest of strokes.
- 7:37Speaker 1: And in the first movie they are trying to exonerate
- 7:42Speaker 1: Casey's brother that he did not commit. I think the
- 7:45Speaker 1: inclusion of Marcus and his storyline in this movie was excellent.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I agree, a key component of the first movie, and
- 7:53Speaker 1: because he is not simply a criminal whom they are
- 7:57Speaker 1: or excuse me, a wrongly accused man who there free
- 8:00Speaker 1: from prison. He's Casey's brother. It's nice to see that
- 8:03Speaker 1: his story doesn't simply end with his exoneration. Now. While
- 8:07Speaker 1: I suspect we might not see much of him in
- 8:09Speaker 1: future movies, I think this movie was his closure. Yes,
- 8:13Speaker 1: that's okay with me. I feel like we gave him
- 8:15Speaker 1: a satisfactory send off. Yep. I also think the inclusion
- 8:18Speaker 1: of his storyline ground the series in his story outside
- 8:22Speaker 1: of our mystery, and it helps these people exist as
- 8:25Speaker 1: real people, not simply character crime solver. Yes, look at you.
- 8:31Speaker 1: I loved it the entire time. I was so glad
- 8:33Speaker 1: that he was included as a part of the story. Sorry,
- 8:36Speaker 1: no shade to Marcus. I just was like, who's that name? No,
- 8:39Speaker 1: I know. Some of the things that I really liked
- 8:42Speaker 1: about this mystery was that it was a little darker
- 8:46Speaker 1: than let's say, Forged Coins of Fanis Winston. Yeah, but
- 8:52Speaker 1: that movie the wife murdered her husband. No I know,
- 8:56Speaker 1: but like it opens up with like a hunter finding
- 9:01Speaker 1: a dead body in this guy like it was giving
- 9:06Speaker 1: true crime. Sure it was. Look I I liked it.
- 9:10Speaker 1: I liked it a lot. I liked all the kind
- 9:13Speaker 1: of themes the bullying, the high school bullying that happened, manipulation,
- 9:19Speaker 1: parental pressure, social politics. There is a lot of ugly
- 9:23Speaker 1: motivation underneath the service. This was not murder light, which
- 9:27Speaker 1: we get murder light in some of the homework. I
- 9:30Speaker 1: gotta tell you some of these ptas, I know that
- 9:33Speaker 1: the PSC I yeah, they are real ugly. Have you
- 9:36Speaker 1: ever seen the ugly like that happening in this movie?
- 9:39Speaker 1: Like have you ever seen that in real life? Murder?
- 9:42Speaker 1: No murder, but like the financial crimes, and yes, I
- 9:46Speaker 1: a crazy, I have crazy. The other things that I
- 9:49Speaker 1: thought really worked And maybe this is director, but the
- 9:54Speaker 1: lab attack did not see that coming at all. You
- 9:59Speaker 1: know what was so interesting saying about the shooting of
- 10:00Speaker 1: that is they she's alone, and they make it seem
- 10:03Speaker 1: like someone might be. In the beginning, I thought someone's there,
- 10:07Speaker 1: Oh did you? But then the framing of the camera changes,
- 10:11Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, she's fine. So I was genuinely startled
- 10:14Speaker 1: to jump. Me too, jumped when they got her me too.
- 10:18Speaker 1: When Liam is investigating in the cabin, I thought that
- 10:22Speaker 1: was tense too. Yeah, also a little bit funny, like
- 10:26Speaker 1: when Sarah's like put it in the bag, put it
- 10:29Speaker 1: in the bag, put it in the bag. I just
- 10:31Speaker 1: I thought that was really funny when Eli and Liam
- 10:34Speaker 1: are inside that house and the VR kid is there,
- 10:37Speaker 1: Like that was weirdly stressful, like in the best way,
- 10:40Speaker 1: I thought, totally. And the dialogue they gave to the
- 10:42Speaker 1: VR kid like it You're like, is he talking to them?
- 10:45Speaker 1: Is he talking to the school time? I was like,
- 10:46Speaker 1: is he talking to them? Yeah? There were a lot
- 10:49Speaker 1: of scenes that I felt a little bit of like
- 10:52Speaker 1: edge of your seat anticipation. I just thought it was
- 10:55Speaker 1: really well done. I agree, really well done. One final
- 11:00Speaker 1: last thing that I liked a lot Bin Airs. I
- 11:03Speaker 1: love his presence, but there was he makes a joke
- 11:05Speaker 1: about himself that made me laugh out loud, like he
- 11:10Speaker 1: was like, why are they afraid of me? I'm cool?
- 11:11Speaker 1: Or I can't remember the line exactly, but it was
- 11:14Speaker 1: so funny. Yep, it just was. I love him so much.
- 11:18Speaker 1: I love a funny Ben. Let's take a big break
- 11:20Speaker 1: and we'll come right back to talk about our wishes.
- 11:30Speaker 1: What did you wish for in this installment of True Justice?
- 11:33Speaker 1: A couple of things, Just a couple of things. I'm
- 11:36Speaker 1: going to need the franchise to move faster in the
- 11:40Speaker 1: romantic angle of things. Hear me out, hear me out.
- 11:45Speaker 1: We have multiple people who are like you like her,
- 11:48Speaker 1: just ask her out this like it's cute. I get it.
- 11:51Speaker 1: But Homewark mystery franchises historically love to stretch the romantic tension, right,
- 11:59Speaker 1: And what I'm worried about is we have Nikki Deluche
- 12:03Speaker 1: behind the script, and Nikki's the queen of being in
- 12:07Speaker 1: mystery franchises. Tom and goldietis catering for forever, like she
- 12:13Speaker 1: knows a slow burn. So I'm hoping that she realizes
- 12:18Speaker 1: that these characters are in their twenties, they're impulsive, emotional, messy.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Let's see some of that messiness happen. Yeah, we don't
- 12:28Speaker 1: need to go from like flirting to in an established relationship,
- 12:32Speaker 1: right and go to like, oh we kiss, now what
- 12:34Speaker 1: does that mean? Oh you're funny? I kiss. I was like,
- 12:36Speaker 1: let's hook up and then like figure out how to admark? Yeah,
- 12:39Speaker 1: I know, I know, I yeah. I just think, yeah,
- 12:42Speaker 1: let's play with the messiness of that. Because they're twenty Yeah,
- 12:47Speaker 1: they're gonna be in law school. Stupid decisions. Fortunately, they
- 12:50Speaker 1: filmed these two movies back to back because it's been
- 12:53Speaker 1: two years since the first movie. These people are still
- 12:55Speaker 1: in law school. They still have the same professor. Like,
- 12:58Speaker 1: we're suspending the idea that it has been two years
- 13:02Speaker 1: since the last movie. But I need to move on
- 13:05Speaker 1: along at some point. Yeah, I have some other wishes,
- 13:07Speaker 1: but let me hear one of yours. Where's PJ. What
- 13:10Speaker 1: was Sabrina Soden doing that she had to appear via zoom?
- 13:13Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm glad that they included her, but
- 13:17Speaker 1: she's not even listed on Oh she is listened on IMDb.
- 13:20Speaker 1: I apologize, but I assume she was busy, or I
- 13:25Speaker 1: assume that she is the fifth wheel and they decided
- 13:28Speaker 1: we got a streamline here, so we're going to have
- 13:30Speaker 1: her out of town working on something else, and we're
- 13:34Speaker 1: going to phase her out. That's too bad. I mean,
- 13:37Speaker 1: she is working. She's in the TV series Memory of
- 13:39Speaker 1: a Killer. She has Wait, who did else? Did I say?
- 13:42Speaker 1: Was in Memory? Oh? The guy that plays Liam? Oh? Interesting,
- 13:47Speaker 1: she's in one episode of that. She's in the movie
- 13:49Speaker 1: called Lice, a movie called Sandwich Monster. So she's been
- 13:53Speaker 1: in other things recently that are out or coming out.
- 13:57Speaker 1: But I just thought, wait a minute, Gang is missing
- 14:00Speaker 1: one that's kind of weird a little bit, A little bit.
- 14:03Speaker 1: What else did you wish for? I don't like the
- 14:06Speaker 1: undercover causeplay stuff. Oh you're not a big fan of
- 14:09Speaker 1: the collection of wigs we saw and the Russian accent
- 14:13Speaker 1: we got. I'm shaking my head. No, it leans way
- 14:16Speaker 1: too corny for me. I understand why they do it.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Uh huh, Like it's okay to have some playful energy.
- 14:24Speaker 1: I just it just I just wish it was handled
- 14:28Speaker 1: it with a more subtle tone. And this is why,
- 14:32Speaker 1: this is why I think about it. Well, one, you
- 14:34Speaker 1: guys know, I don't like hyjinks and corniness anyway, right,
- 14:38Speaker 1: but we're dealing with people who are accused. They're trying
- 14:42Speaker 1: to exonerate people right wrongfully convicted, and so when it's
- 14:49Speaker 1: too silly for that serious subject matter, yes, I think
- 14:53Speaker 1: that's I think that's where I lay them way. And
- 14:56Speaker 1: then I start to question, like would any of this
- 14:58Speaker 1: hold up in court? The information that there? Yes, I
- 15:01Speaker 1: wonder that too, when they're doing all this CSI work, Yeah,
- 15:05Speaker 1: that too, Does any of that count? I don't know.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Like they got the antlers, but they weren't retrieved as
- 15:13Speaker 1: part of a police investigation. So exactly the chain of
- 15:17Speaker 1: custody wasn't maintained. So how are they going to use this?
- 15:20Speaker 1: I don't know. Are they just relying on getting that like, hey,
- 15:24Speaker 1: we found you out, Now we're going to get your
- 15:26Speaker 1: confession out of you, and now you're going to go
- 15:28Speaker 1: to oh gosh. And that's what I don't like, Like,
- 15:30Speaker 1: let's not do that. I would prefer a little more
- 15:34Speaker 1: of a realistic storyline in people. How people get exonerated. Yeah,
- 15:39Speaker 1: and also, I don't care how much evidence you have.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Everybody maintains their innocence. Nobody faced with all of their evidence,
- 15:45Speaker 1: it's like, you're right, I did it, and here's why. Yeah,
- 15:47Speaker 1: that exactly. It is not a realistic history. You can
- 15:50Speaker 1: be an investigator without putting a fake wig and accent
- 15:55Speaker 1: on Sure. Why can nobody knows who you are? Why
- 15:57Speaker 1: can't Casey just show up as yeah, yeah and ask
- 16:01Speaker 1: the questions? Yeah? Why can't they just be They could
- 16:04Speaker 1: tend to be parents, but they don't need to be Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:08Speaker 1: It's like part of me is like, Okay, I get
- 16:10Speaker 1: like it's trying to be a little bit funny, but
- 16:12Speaker 1: I didn't land for you. It does not work for me.
- 16:16Speaker 1: My only other wish is I don't hate it. But
- 16:20Speaker 1: then Nelly Knows, oh crossover. It did make me laugh,
- 16:24Speaker 1: but it also makes me wonder why. I do wonder
- 16:27Speaker 1: why too. He's like, oh, I'm reading the Nelly Knows column. First, well,
- 16:29Speaker 1: no you're not. And second of all, you know you're not.
- 16:33Speaker 1: My grandma wants me to Okay, fine, but was it
- 16:37Speaker 1: like my grandma wants me to find a nice girl
- 16:39Speaker 1: or something some something like wants me to read this
- 16:42Speaker 1: advice about finding a nice girl. I don't know, something
- 16:44Speaker 1: like that. I just why, why why are they having
- 16:48Speaker 1: that crossover? Why? Yeah, that's what I don't understand either.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Why do these Maybe there's some sort of long term plan.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Maybe they just thought it would be funny. I don't
- 16:58Speaker 1: know the reason for it. But maybe they were filming
- 17:02Speaker 1: at the same time Nelly Knows was filming, and they're like, Hey,
- 17:04Speaker 1: let's have marketing come over and play this role, and
- 17:06Speaker 1: then we're gonna have this fun crossover. I don't know.
- 17:10Speaker 1: I think it's maybe just a easter egg for the viewers.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Maybe back to your comment about the slowest of slow burns,
- 17:16Speaker 1: Oh yeah, there's a lot of flirting here and I
- 17:20Speaker 1: don't know if we got an actual timeline between when
- 17:25Speaker 1: movie one ends and when this one picks up. As
- 17:28Speaker 1: you mentioned, they're young. They're not going to sit on
- 17:31Speaker 1: that flirting for this long, Like they're not going to
- 17:33Speaker 1: be at this like talking stage, as the youth say,
- 17:37Speaker 1: for this long. I hope not. Well, let's talk. Did
- 17:39Speaker 1: you see that you really have any any particular ones,
- 17:44Speaker 1: like you know? True? Did you see that's just just
- 17:47Speaker 1: just commentary? I have one true? Did you see that?
- 17:50Speaker 1: Let's hear it. So the opening scene, the second opening scene,
- 17:53Speaker 1: right after the Hunter scene, when they're making popcorn, popcorn
- 17:57Speaker 1: machine is still running. Casey sweeps the bowl underneath it
- 18:00Speaker 1: and popcorn continues to fall onto the counter and she
- 18:03Speaker 1: sweeps some of it off into the trash. There's still popcorn,
- 18:07Speaker 1: like use a bigger bowl. There another bowl under there,
- 18:11Speaker 1: but they just sweep it away and the popcorn continues
- 18:13Speaker 1: to just pop onto the counter. That popcorn maker was
- 18:16Speaker 1: like a real throwback, right, real throwback? Are we not
- 18:18Speaker 1: making microwave popcorn? I do because I'm lazy, Yeah I haven't.
- 18:23Speaker 1: We don't on a popcorn machine like that, yeah, but
