- 1:20Speaker 1: Welcome to The Favorites, the podcast from the Volume Podcast Network.
- 1:24Speaker 1: I am Chad Melman, Chief Content stunt Officer of the
- 1:27Speaker 1: Action Network. It is Thursday. We're doing your questions. We
- 1:30Speaker 1: did it on Tuesday. We loved it so much, we're
- 1:33Speaker 1: bringing it back. Don't forget. Love the Favorites as much
- 1:36Speaker 1: as you can on Apple podcasts, on Spotify, favorite it,
- 1:41Speaker 1: follow it, subscribe to it on those platforms. I am
- 1:45Speaker 1: joined to answer all of the most important questions that
- 1:49Speaker 1: you have. If you remember, on Tuesday, we were talking
- 1:53Speaker 1: a lot about aliens and quarterbacks. Sometimes it's hard to
- 1:56Speaker 1: tell the difference. My bff, my companion, Michael Padre professional
- 2:00Speaker 1: better Simon Hunter. Hello. Saw him in. Hello Chad, How
- 2:07Speaker 1: are you doing brother? I'm ready to dig in, man,
- 2:10Speaker 1: I am ready to dig in. I feel like our
- 2:12Speaker 1: listeners had a lot of really good questions, a lot
- 2:14Speaker 1: of really important questions. I think we answered him as
- 2:18Speaker 1: well as we possibly can with authenticity, credibility, and earnestness.
- 2:23Speaker 1: It's true and this is it for you. And next
- 2:26Speaker 1: time that people will see me on camera, I will
- 2:28Speaker 1: be clean shaved with barely any hair left on my head.
- 2:31Speaker 1: This is just for when I head out to the
- 2:34Speaker 1: National Park, so the Grand Canon and the Zion National Park.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I don't if you saw this chat. I'm driving into
- 2:39Speaker 1: a blizzard this week. Yeah, I did notice that. I
- 2:42Speaker 1: noticed that the weather is looking icy and spicy for
- 2:46Speaker 1: your cross country drive. Not a good drive to have
- 2:49Speaker 1: a m for convertible in. But we will make it work.
- 2:51Speaker 1: We got the horsepower to get through it. You know what,
- 2:53Speaker 1: in your world it's always sunny. Just keep the top
- 2:57Speaker 1: down and people will look at you're like, I want
- 3:01Speaker 1: to know what this guy knows, and I'll say them
- 3:03Speaker 1: neck warmers. That's the key of these new convertibles. They
- 3:06Speaker 1: got neck warmers, all right. Last week, you guys heard
- 3:09Speaker 1: us talk about game Time, the fastest growing ticketing app
- 3:13Speaker 1: in the United States. I've mentioned it before. I use
- 3:16Speaker 1: game Time a lot. And if you're looking to get
- 3:19Speaker 1: out to any NBA or NHL game this week, or
- 3:21Speaker 1: even a concert, game Time has amazing last minute deals
- 3:26Speaker 1: on tickets to all of these. I'm actually going to
- 3:28Speaker 1: open the game Time app right now. I'm in New York.
- 3:32Speaker 1: I'm at our studio. I'm gonna check out what's available
- 3:36Speaker 1: in the New York area. I remember last on Tuesday,
- 3:39Speaker 1: I was able to get tickets for the New Jersey
- 3:43Speaker 1: Devil's game. You know what I'm gonna do. I can
- 3:46Speaker 1: get premier seats for Saturday's game between the Pelicans and
- 3:54Speaker 1: the New York Knickerbockers at Madison Square Garden. Cheapest price
- 4:00Speaker 1: right now eighty seven. It's a steal. You know why,
- 4:04Speaker 1: Jalen Brunson, Julius Randall, that team is cooking. The city
- 4:08Speaker 1: is alive. We love for the New York Knickerbockers. That's
- 4:12Speaker 1: how easy it was to get the tickets. No matter

- 4:30Speaker 1: Time today, last minute tickets, lowest price guaranteed. Simon, we
- 4:38Speaker 1: did not get to all the questions. So here's the
- 4:43Speaker 1: first one up. It's offseason. You're gonna start doing some work,
- 4:48Speaker 1: started thinking about your power rankings. What are the most
- 4:51Speaker 1: important elements in your power rankings? And this is a
- 4:56Speaker 1: good pre see to the next question. I want to ask,
- 5:00Speaker 1: what's the most important elements in my power rankings. That's
- 5:06Speaker 1: hard because it's different between in season and out of season.
- 5:08Speaker 1: I'd say before the season, it's really basic. I literally
- 5:13Speaker 1: just look for team strength and weaknesses. And you know
- 5:16Speaker 1: I talk all the time. I start with the old line,
- 5:18Speaker 1: I start with the D line, start with the quarterback. Next,
- 5:21Speaker 1: I go to head coach, which obviously you know I
- 5:24Speaker 1: talk all the time. That's a big deal of people
- 5:26Speaker 1: like the head coaching football. There's a reason there's so
- 5:29Speaker 1: much turnover, and the ones at last tend to be really, really,
- 5:32Speaker 1: really good at their jobs. I mean, as much shit
- 5:35Speaker 1: as people want to give Tomlin in Pittsburgh because he
- 5:37Speaker 1: hasn't really had that much playoffs success, the man every
- 5:40Speaker 1: year gets that team above five hundred, Like that's got
- 5:42Speaker 1: to count for something. So yeah, I would say that's
- 5:47Speaker 1: a little tough, just because it does change during the season.
- 5:49Speaker 1: But I would say definitely if you're looking just bare bones.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I keep telling you guys a nauseum that old line
- 5:57Speaker 1: D line thing is a big deal. And coming to
- 5:59Speaker 1: the year, it saved my ass. Like I was all
- 6:01Speaker 1: in on the Eagles and the Chiefs because I had
- 6:03Speaker 1: them as my two highest graded old lines. And you know,
- 6:06Speaker 1: it's not always gonna be that simple, but I'm telling
- 6:09Speaker 1: you more often than that, it's gonna matter. And my
- 6:11Speaker 1: biggest lesson I'll ever ever learn was when I first
- 6:14Speaker 1: started out, my first year was that Patriots Giant super Bowl?
- 6:19Speaker 1: So what was that twenty ten chat twenty twenty eleven,
- 6:23Speaker 1: I forget that all it was twenty twenty nine that yeah,
- 6:28Speaker 1: yeah or yeah, whatever it was. I just remember that
- 6:31Speaker 1: was really an AHA moment of you know how much
- 6:35Speaker 1: of a difference a game wrecking in front four can make.
- 6:37Speaker 1: And you know, I got lucky throughout the years with that.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I won big on that Denver Verse Carolina super Bowl,
- 6:43Speaker 1: Sam exact thing. I just banked on a good defense.
- 6:45Speaker 1: So um yeah, if you're if you're looking for important
- 6:49Speaker 1: elements to grading the power rankings, I would say that
- 6:53Speaker 1: don't just blindly just do it off the cornerbacks, because
- 6:56Speaker 1: that's so Chalky, that's so Joe. Yeah, where it is
- 7:03Speaker 1: because there's just so much that goes into it. I
- 7:05Speaker 1: mean we talk all the time Mahomes is the unicorn,
- 7:08Speaker 1: Like you don't really get that kind of thing where
- 7:11Speaker 1: he was. We can easily say he was the main
- 7:15Speaker 1: reason for that Chief super Bowl run. I mean their
- 7:18Speaker 1: first game they won by a touchdown, the second game
- 7:19Speaker 1: they won by field goal, and they won the Super
- 7:21Speaker 1: Bowl by field goal. It's like, you got those kind
- 7:23Speaker 1: of close games that's usually because the quarterbacks that good
- 7:26Speaker 1: to keep you in it. I feel like that's why
- 7:27Speaker 1: we all knew Joe Burrow was that guy. I mean
- 7:29Speaker 1: that playoff from they had every game they kept winning
- 7:31Speaker 1: by three points. That's kind you know, that's how you
- 7:33Speaker 1: know you have a guy. It's like this guy, when
- 7:35Speaker 1: it gets really tight, can make those moves. And to me,
- 7:38Speaker 1: you can't really find that building a model. So if
- 7:41Speaker 1: you're looking for things like that, those are things I
- 7:43Speaker 1: look for in quarterbacks. I want quarterbacks that can win
- 7:45Speaker 1: really tight games. That's that's a really big deal to me.
- 7:48Speaker 1: A quarterback that doesn't get tight, he can play free
- 7:52Speaker 1: and loose. So if you're looking for different elements head
- 7:54Speaker 1: coach all offensive line, defensive line, and quarterback. Obviously those
- 7:58Speaker 1: are those are my bread and butter. Those are the
- 8:00Speaker 1: most important things to look at. That's a good answer
- 8:02Speaker 1: because we've got a question later on about a very
- 8:05Speaker 1: specific head coach and how he can impact gambling. What
- 8:08Speaker 1: I would say about head coaches, just to lend some
- 8:11Speaker 1: context to this is, over the years, professional betters would
- 8:16Speaker 1: always say Bill Belichick was really the only head coach
- 8:21Speaker 1: that had any kind of impact on the point spread
- 8:25Speaker 1: in a positive way, right, Like you would give him
- 8:28Speaker 1: an extra point because of the way he could gain
- 8:31Speaker 1: plan and the way he thought about the rules. I
- 8:33Speaker 1: don't know that there's a coach today that you give
- 8:37Speaker 1: that point to when you're power rating as opposed to
- 8:42Speaker 1: you just want to think about, all right, this is
- 8:45Speaker 1: a guy who has an advantage when you're handicapping. The
- 8:48Speaker 1: flip side of that is, I know a lot of
- 8:50Speaker 1: wise guys who used to take a point away from
- 8:54Speaker 1: the Chargers because of the way North Turner, the former
- 8:56Speaker 1: coach there, used to coach the games. So I just
- 9:01Speaker 1: think that's interesting contact next to Simon, Yeah, I would
- 9:04Speaker 1: say there's certain coaches as a dog where I give
- 9:06Speaker 1: them a point like if Shannahan's a dog, I give
- 9:10Speaker 1: Shannahan a nice bump there. Like we've seen a time
- 9:12Speaker 1: and time agame Shannon as an underdog has been profitable.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Same with Doug Peterson. Doug Peterson as an underdog has
- 9:17Speaker 1: been profitable. So there's certain coaches where I'm right there
- 9:20Speaker 1: with Chad where it's like nothing's like Belichick. Belichick. I
- 9:24Speaker 1: don't want to say he was free money as an underdog,
- 9:27Speaker 1: but he was like there was a run there where
- 9:29Speaker 1: you know, Brady was either out for injury or he
- 9:31Speaker 1: was out for deflate gate, and I think he was
- 9:33Speaker 1: an underdog and every one of those three games or
- 9:35Speaker 1: four games, and I think he went three and one
- 9:38Speaker 1: in those games Belichick with the backup. So it's just
- 9:40Speaker 1: one of those where Chad's right, Like I know, plenty
- 9:43Speaker 1: of pros they just you know, they won six and
- 9:46Speaker 1: three betting on time in the Super Bowl, so they
- 9:48Speaker 1: were happy with the results. They just blindly would take
- 9:51Speaker 1: Belichick and Brady in those runs just because they had
- 9:54Speaker 1: that much respect for him in his game planning, because
- 9:56Speaker 1: we saw a time and time again, he's just when
- 9:58Speaker 1: he was on top of his game. Belich there was
- 10:00Speaker 1: no better defensive mine in football? What are the three
- 10:05Speaker 1: most important things you look at when handicapping an NFL game.
- 10:08Speaker 1: I'll take this one first because I'm curious to see
- 10:12Speaker 1: if you are thinking about the same things. But I
- 10:16Speaker 1: am looking for. Do I immediately see an edge in
- 10:23Speaker 1: a short home favorite or a home underdog. I immediately
- 10:31Speaker 1: look at where the market is and do I think
- 10:35Speaker 1: there's going to be an advantage? And I also try
- 10:41Speaker 1: to incorporate what happened the previous week, which goes into
- 10:45Speaker 1: both of those things. But I try to let that
- 10:48Speaker 1: be something that has a pretty powerful influence on how
- 10:52Speaker 1: I'm thinking about handicapping a game. It's almost to me
- 10:56Speaker 1: it's entirely perception in market when I first look at
- 11:00Speaker 1: at it. Yeah, that's tough. I mean it's I don't know,
- 11:06Speaker 1: because there's not like three things. Every everything is kind
- 11:08Speaker 1: of unique and different. Every scenario is unique and different.
- 11:11Speaker 1: So my most basic first three first three things you
- 11:17Speaker 1: look at, um, I don't know. Man, Again, I'm trying
- 11:21Speaker 1: to grab my head around. There's just so many different things,
- 11:23Speaker 1: like Chad just said, like there's some some games where
- 11:26Speaker 1: I don't even need to run my model, like living
- 11:29Speaker 1: the team will get blown out last week. Now they're
- 11:31Speaker 1: coming home playing a team that beat the crap at
- 11:33Speaker 1: US some team last week, and there are seven point
- 11:35Speaker 1: favorite on the road. Chad knows the deal. Like I
- 11:38Speaker 1: almost blindly always take that underdog, right, But that's I
- 11:41Speaker 1: think that's the question, Like, that's that's how I looked
- 11:44Speaker 1: at it. That's how I'm answering it, like you and I.
- 11:47Speaker 1: You and I look at the board every single week,
- 11:49Speaker 1: and you know, in the fall, we're gonna start doing
- 11:52Speaker 1: episodes on Sunday nights as soon as the late games
- 11:55Speaker 1: are over, and there might be some lines posted that
- 11:58Speaker 1: we'll have some early opinions, right, but by Tuesday we're
- 12:02Speaker 1: looking at the board. We've been looking at it for
- 12:04Speaker 1: you know, say thirty six hours by the time we
- 12:06Speaker 1: do the podcast, and we know it without having done
- 12:11Speaker 1: any modeling. Yeah, which games we like, and it's that
- 12:15Speaker 1: is entirely based on the market. Yeah, So I would say, like,
- 12:19Speaker 1: that's obviously an important thing to look for, but I
- 12:21Speaker 1: would say, for you know, just starting out for people,
- 12:28Speaker 1: I would look at the public, what the public's doing. Like, again,
- 12:30Speaker 1: I don't blindly do it, but if you find yourself
- 12:33Speaker 1: in line with everyone else on a public side, you know,
- 12:36Speaker 1: that's an issue. You gotta start checking those things. Where
- 12:38Speaker 1: I told people in the playoffs it's different. I don't
- 12:40Speaker 1: mind betting with the public in the playoffs, but during
- 12:42Speaker 1: the regular season there's certain times where I just won't
- 12:46Speaker 1: touch a game even if I like that same side,
- 12:48Speaker 1: I'll just either play the other side or I'll just
- 12:50Speaker 1: stay stay out of it. So for just starting out,
- 12:54Speaker 1: I would say, try to learn that. Try to learn
- 12:57Speaker 1: that of you know, again, you don't blindly fade the public,
- 13:01Speaker 1: but you don't want to be on the public side
- 13:02Speaker 1: all the time. If you find yourself on the public
- 13:04Speaker 1: side all the time, you gotta redo your model, like
- 13:06Speaker 1: something's clearly wrong in your model, because I mean, try
- 13:09Speaker 1: to talk all the time. A lot of time I
- 13:10Speaker 1: find value is you know, a team will be as
- 13:13Speaker 1: low as it's been all year, and that's peak value
- 13:15Speaker 1: on certain teams. So for me, from the most important
- 13:19Speaker 1: things you look at when handicapping, i'd tell people to
- 13:21Speaker 1: start there, and then also, you know, go through trends.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Like trends, once again, I don't blindly bet off it.
- 13:27Speaker 1: I do think they're very important too. Betting like trends
- 13:30Speaker 1: can kind of help you make a mindset of how
- 13:31Speaker 1: you think the game's gonna play out, and I'll let
- 13:34Speaker 1: you stay away from repeating the history again. People get
- 13:37Speaker 1: in trouble because they keep repeating the same history over
- 13:39Speaker 1: and over again. Trend's gonna help you stop that. Like
- 13:41Speaker 1: if you if you kept liking fading the Eagles in
- 13:44Speaker 1: the first half, and then you realize, well, the trend
- 13:46Speaker 1: says they're five and oh in the first half, that's
- 13:49Speaker 1: pretty easy. You just stop fading the Eagles in the
- 13:51Speaker 1: first half. So that's one of those where I'm talking
- 13:53Speaker 1: about the biggest trend better, I need to look at trends.
- 13:56Speaker 1: I need to make sure I'm checking the trends because
- 13:58Speaker 1: sometimes I can save you from easting a lot of
- 14:00Speaker 1: money thinking you know more where you know. Trends tend
- 14:04Speaker 1: to be pretty right, like things are what they are.
- 14:07Speaker 1: That's why they're trends. So again, not one size fits all,
- 14:11Speaker 1: but I like to check trends before I make bets.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Trends are trends for a reason. Cliches are true for
- 14:16Speaker 1: a reason. There you go, when let me let me
- 14:23Speaker 1: scroll down. You know, Matt Mitchell put these all together
- 14:25Speaker 1: in a very thoughtful Google doc. But one of the
- 14:31Speaker 1: questions that is lower in our dock is about Sean Payton.
- 14:36Speaker 1: And we were just talking about coaches Belichick, Tomlin, norv Turner. Right, Shanahan,
- 14:42Speaker 1: you and I both love Sean Payton. You're we talked
- 14:46Speaker 1: about the Broncos and our Futures podcast right after the
- 14:49Speaker 1: Super Bowl. Love them. Massive impact. I mean, it's the
- 14:55Speaker 1: question is how big of an impact gambling wise does
- 14:58Speaker 1: Sean Payne's return actually have? Huge? It's like going from again,
- 15:02Speaker 1: I hate shit on people's cars, but it's like going
- 15:05Speaker 1: from driving a Kia to a Lamborghini like that. That
- 15:08Speaker 1: last head coach. We all saw it first the first
- 15:12Speaker 1: game of their season. Yeah. I wasn't trying to be
- 15:14Speaker 1: an asshole. I just said that was fire bull shit.
- 15:18Speaker 1: This guy didn't know how to handle the moments, and
- 15:21Speaker 1: we saw a playoff for the rest of the season.
- 15:22Speaker 1: The guy just was not meant to be head coach.
- 15:24Speaker 1: He might be a great offensive coordinator, he just doesn't
- 15:26Speaker 1: have that part of his brain that can work to
- 15:28Speaker 1: be a head coach, which is you're calling the plays,
- 15:30Speaker 1: you're doing all this other bullshit, but in the back
- 15:33Speaker 1: of your mind. You know you have three timeouts and
- 15:34Speaker 1: there's three minutes left to go, and you have to
- 15:36Speaker 1: make a plan and want to use those timeouts. That's
- 15:38Speaker 1: all real stuff. Sean Payton to me, he's everything I
- 15:42Speaker 1: love of a head coach. This guy is obsessed with
- 15:45Speaker 1: football and he's so fucking smart. Like one of my
- 15:49Speaker 1: favorite Teampaign stories ever was that bounty gate. Remember you
- 15:51Speaker 1: got kicked out of the NFL for a year or two. Yeah,
- 15:54Speaker 1: he went to coach his sons high school team, which
- 15:56Speaker 1: I think the previous year had two wins. They went undefeated,
- 15:59Speaker 1: and they want to stay championship. So it's one of
- 16:02Speaker 1: those things where it's like this guy is really smart
- 16:06Speaker 1: at taking what he has and making a system around it.
- 16:09Speaker 1: I think that's what he'll do here where you know
- 16:11Speaker 1: all that bs. We heard Russell Wilson had his own
- 16:13Speaker 1: people in the building and his own nutritionist was in
- 16:15Speaker 1: the building. He wanted the time Brady treatment. That's why
- 16:18Speaker 1: I love Sean Payne. He's gonna come in there and
- 16:20Speaker 1: he's gonna be like, dude, I was the one that
- 16:22Speaker 1: I brought you to hear to Denver, like I could
- 16:23Speaker 1: care less. This new ownership aint the one that brought
- 16:26Speaker 1: you here to Denver. They could care less about you too.
- 16:28Speaker 1: If you wanted me to get the little bit of
- 16:29Speaker 1: outs of talent out of you, you're gonna shape up
- 16:31Speaker 1: and listen to it. To say, I think that's what
- 16:33Speaker 1: Sean's gonna do right away, where he's gonna go and
- 16:35Speaker 1: he's gonna kick a kick a bunch of guy's asses.
- 16:38Speaker 1: That's a team with a shitload of talent. So that's
- 16:40Speaker 1: why you know, coming into Denver, I'm their biggest weakness
- 16:43Speaker 1: is still to me, their offensive line. I think Peyton,
- 16:46Speaker 1: the mind he has, he'll be able to scheme around that.
- 16:48Speaker 1: So you know, if I was gonna actually put a
- 16:51Speaker 1: number on it, I would give them an extra win
- 16:53Speaker 1: and a half to two wins on Sean Payton. So
- 16:57Speaker 1: say I have the top five quarterbacks, I mean not
- 16:59Speaker 1: quarterbacks coaches this year. I'd still put Belichick one, put
- 17:03Speaker 1: Andy at two. Maybe I put Shanahan. Even though Shannon
- 17:06Speaker 1: has no rings, I still think he's that good. I
- 17:08Speaker 1: put him at three, McVeigh four, and I would, honestly,
- 17:11Speaker 1: even with the years missed, I put Sean Payne at five.
- 17:14Speaker 1: I just think he is that good of a head coach.
- 17:17Speaker 1: So yeah, I think it's a big deal. Like you
- 17:21Speaker 1: gotta get it all right, all these things you need
- 17:23Speaker 1: to line up, You need to get the quarterback, and
- 17:24Speaker 1: you need to get the coach. And I think at
- 17:26Speaker 1: this point they have the coach for sure in Denver.
- 17:29Speaker 1: I just don't know if they have the quarterback. That's
- 17:32Speaker 1: an interesting discussion. I would also add, I can't argue
- 17:37Speaker 1: with your top five. You know, I love Shanahan. I
- 17:41Speaker 1: think he's brilliant. Yeah, but I would also put in
- 17:44Speaker 1: there John Harbaugh, I would put Dan Campbell, I would
- 17:51Speaker 1: put I would put day Ball in there. I would
- 17:55Speaker 1: put Tomlin in there. That's nine, and I put Rabel
- 18:01Speaker 1: in there. That's ten. Yeah, enough to put. I'd also
- 18:05Speaker 1: have to put in um Matt Eberflus. Why because the
- 18:13Speaker 1: way he allowed the barriers to look competitive but was
- 18:16Speaker 1: still smart enough to lose ten eleven straight games to
- 18:20Speaker 1: end the year and end up with the number one pick.
- 18:23Speaker 1: That is macki Avellian's true don't sleep on Listen everyone
- 18:30Speaker 1: says don't sleep on Eberflus. I completely forget what that
- 18:33Speaker 1: guy's name was until you said, so that's remember the name.
- 18:39Speaker 1: My friend Simon, remember the name. Um, I agree with
- 18:44Speaker 1: you on pick love the Guy. Yeah, here's an interesting one.
- 18:49Speaker 1: A lot of football questions, but I think this is
- 18:51Speaker 1: a really important one. It says a lot about the
- 18:53Speaker 1: person you are, how you approach life. We had a
- 18:57Speaker 1: lot of that in the previous podcast. If you were
- 19:00Speaker 1: perpetually surrounded. Before I get to that, let me just
- 19:04Speaker 1: say I do think answering the question about whether or
- 19:07Speaker 1: not you believe in aliens says a lot about who
- 19:09Speaker 1: you are. Yeah, it's true, and I'm glad that we
- 19:13Speaker 1: were aligned on that question. So this is another test
- 19:16Speaker 1: of our relationship and our compatibility. If you were perpetually
- 19:19Speaker 1: surrounded by one aroma that you and everyone around you
- 19:22Speaker 1: could smell, what would it be. It's tough because I
- 19:26Speaker 1: know you eventually I hate it. Like my first thought
- 19:28Speaker 1: was bacon, but then it might ruin the smell of
- 19:29Speaker 1: bacon for me. But I have a really weird thing.
- 19:33Speaker 1: My favorite smell. Ever, this is weird as shit is
- 19:37Speaker 1: fresh off the ice hockey pucks Like you ever catch
- 19:41Speaker 1: one on the stands when they're doing the warm up
- 19:42Speaker 1: shots and stuff. No, I used to huffle, man, It's
- 19:46Speaker 1: like pure rubber or whatever that smell was. I loved
- 19:48Speaker 1: it as a kid. Now I'm older, I don't smell
- 19:50Speaker 1: hockey pucks anymore. But yeah, Simon, from eight to twelve, Oh,
- 19:56Speaker 1: that was my favorite thing about America. Catch a hockey
- 19:58Speaker 1: puck in the stands, just that bad boy, the whole,
- 20:02Speaker 1: the whole game. So I don't know. I'm trying to
- 20:04Speaker 1: think of what weird ass smell I would like forever,
- 20:06Speaker 1: and it might be that rubber. I just used to
- 20:08Speaker 1: love the smell of hockey pucks. You are a freak. Yeah,
- 20:14Speaker 1: I know. It's the most random thing. That is the
- 20:17Speaker 1: most random thing. Like you could say, you could say citrus,
- 20:22Speaker 1: you could say vanilla. Yeah, you could say fresh pine
- 20:29Speaker 1: like I did straight, Like when I did dip, I
- 20:31Speaker 1: did straight, which is like the old man dip. There's
- 20:34Speaker 1: no smell to it. So I'll let you know we're
- 20:35Speaker 1: on that with a romas like I just like it bland. See,
- 20:39Speaker 1: I was gonna say, like the smell of the forest
- 20:43Speaker 1: on a camping trip when you first wake up. If
- 20:46Speaker 1: we're gonna do that, I would say when I step
- 20:48Speaker 1: off an airplane in Hawaii, that's the greatest fucking smell ever,
- 20:51Speaker 1: or the redwoods in California. But no, I was trying
- 20:54Speaker 1: to find a weird object. Chat, give me something weird.
- 20:56Speaker 1: You like to smell like, You're like, you're like gasoline.
- 21:00Speaker 1: You're a gas huffer. I don't mind gas. I mean
- 21:03Speaker 1: I'm very My wife will tell you I'm very ol
- 21:05Speaker 1: factory sensitive. Like I walk into a room and I
- 21:09Speaker 1: like can smell immediately if something is off and don't
- 21:12Speaker 1: like it. I just you know, it's like I hate
- 21:15Speaker 1: pour I hate potpourri. Yeah, hate hate potpourri. Can't can't
- 21:22Speaker 1: do it. It makes me sick to my stomach. Matt
- 21:25Speaker 1: Mitchell is weighing in. He says the answer is cedar,
- 21:28Speaker 1: the world's greatest smell. That would make sense from a
- 21:31Speaker 1: guy who basically lives in a cedar basement in the
- 21:35Speaker 1: middle of Wisconsin. The cedar is like the the official
- 21:38Speaker 1: state smell of Wisconsin. Bet the NBA on TNT within

- 23:48Speaker 1: couple more football questions, but here's another fun one. If
- 23:51Speaker 1: you could only bet one sport for the rest of
- 23:54Speaker 1: your life, and it couldn't be football, what do you choose,
- 23:59Speaker 1: and oh, like I'm living here in America, my same
- 24:04Speaker 1: exact life. Yeah you're thinking soccer. Yeah, if I was overseas,
- 24:09Speaker 1: I do soccer. But because I'm in America, I just
- 24:11Speaker 1: do a baseball like I love. My favorite thing about
- 24:14Speaker 1: baseball is all the numbers with it, where it's like
- 24:16Speaker 1: if you build a model, you can find the huge
- 24:20Speaker 1: edges in baseball because it's every day And basically I
- 24:24Speaker 1: know a handful of pros that they might hit forty
- 24:26Speaker 1: percent for the season, but they're up a shitload of
- 24:29Speaker 1: money just because they bet underdogs all seasons. So you know,
- 24:34Speaker 1: baseball is the grind of grinds. But I just I
- 24:40Speaker 1: used to be based to be my thing. Like I
- 24:42Speaker 1: used to be obsessed with fantasy baseball when I was
- 24:44Speaker 1: really young. As I've gotten older, I've kind of phased
- 24:47Speaker 1: it out. Like I'm still a Phillies fan. I still
- 24:49Speaker 1: have a model build or anything for baseball, Like I
- 24:51Speaker 1: get my picks off the guys in my groups or
- 24:53Speaker 1: Shanzirilla or a guy. So you know, to me, if
- 24:57Speaker 1: I had to do one sport and the same thing
- 24:59Speaker 1: where footba, well you know, I just do nothing for
- 25:01Speaker 1: seven months I got I'm all in. I could do
- 25:03Speaker 1: that with baseball, like just literally go into a hole
- 25:06Speaker 1: after pitchers and catchers and then come out of the
- 25:08Speaker 1: hole in November. I can do that, So I guess
- 25:10Speaker 1: I'll go with baseball. I would bet first five in baseball.
- 25:16Speaker 1: I would have bet full game in baseball. I would
- 25:19Speaker 1: My answer would be an era and a sport. So
- 25:24Speaker 1: if I could bet one sport forever, and it couldn't
- 25:27Speaker 1: be the NFL, I'm betting late nineties college basketball, and
- 25:35Speaker 1: I'm probably betting like the extra games that Ritchie Batolary
- 25:41Speaker 1: posted at the MGM. So when I was writing The Odds,
- 25:46Speaker 1: my best selling book about guys who've been in sports
- 25:48Speaker 1: for a living, when I spent six months in Vegas
- 25:50Speaker 1: tracking these guys, and Alan Boston was the professional better
- 25:56Speaker 1: who I profiled, and he was the best college basketball
- 25:59Speaker 1: better in the world at the time. And I'd be
- 26:02Speaker 1: with him on a Saturday, full day, on a Saturday,
- 26:05Speaker 1: seven am to seven pm West Coast time, and you know,
- 26:10Speaker 1: he's literally betten millions over the course of the day
- 26:13Speaker 1: on college basketball. But the MGM and the books then
- 26:18Speaker 1: they you know, you could find some really good opportunities
- 26:21Speaker 1: because if you were focused on college basketball, especially October November,
- 26:27Speaker 1: the books just couldn't be sharp. Like, you know, ken
- 26:30Speaker 1: palm was barely a thing. If it was a thing
- 26:32Speaker 1: at that point, I don't think it was. And so
- 26:37Speaker 1: the books were so focused on baseball, NBA, college football, NFL,
- 26:42Speaker 1: there wasn't an opportunity to really make great lines for
- 26:46Speaker 1: college basketball. And then Richie box Hilary took it one
- 26:49Speaker 1: step further and was posting lines like Patriot League lines
- 26:53Speaker 1: that nobody else was posting, and was taken big, big limits,
- 26:58Speaker 1: like he didn't give a fuck, and so you could
- 27:00Speaker 1: go in and just clean up on those games and
- 27:02Speaker 1: he didn't care. He like this was old end of
- 27:05Speaker 1: old school Vegas where bookmakers were gamblers, right They weren't.
- 27:10Speaker 1: They weren't sort of considered to be the arbitrage experts
- 27:16Speaker 1: that they are now. They weren't trading floor analysts, right.
- 27:21Speaker 1: They were bookmakers who were thrown up lines, letting wise
- 27:25Speaker 1: guys come in pound him into shape, taking big limits
- 27:28Speaker 1: and letting the chips fall where they may. That's what
- 27:31Speaker 1: I would bet, and that's the era I would be better.
- 27:33Speaker 1: It in can't argue with it doesn't that sound nice. Yeah,
- 27:39Speaker 1: you know, like back then the Stardust, which is the
- 27:43Speaker 1: book that I profiled, and the bookmakers were Bob Scucci
- 27:45Speaker 1: and Joe Lupo, and you know, they'd have a line
- 27:51Speaker 1: out the door at eight am for from wise guys
- 27:58Speaker 1: to bet the opening lines for college basketball. They weren't
- 28:01Speaker 1: betting them offshore yet, like it was just starting to
- 28:04Speaker 1: become a thing, so they would just line up to
- 28:06Speaker 1: get like the freshest lines. It's like line enough to
- 28:09Speaker 1: get the best fish at the fish market at four
- 28:11Speaker 1: in the morning. It was just fucking insane. I wonder
- 28:15Speaker 1: how you would have done back then, if you would
- 28:17Speaker 1: have liked it like before, I know you lived in Vegas,
- 28:20Speaker 1: but like before you had the advantage of technology and
- 28:25Speaker 1: all these kinds of things. They would say. I would
- 28:30Speaker 1: definitely say I would have gone broke easier. That would
- 28:33Speaker 1: be the damn truth. Where like a model is a
- 28:37Speaker 1: nice crack, I can line my model up with a
- 28:38Speaker 1: bunch of other things. I can line it up with
- 28:39Speaker 1: the old school guys who are, like I told you
- 28:42Speaker 1: all the times, there's guys who walk outside, you know,
- 28:45Speaker 1: and they're mustard staining tank top and they'll look up
- 28:48Speaker 1: in the sky and I'll be like, you know what,
- 28:49Speaker 1: today I'm betting the Knicks and the Knicks school win
- 28:51Speaker 1: by like thirty and I'm like, how do these guys
- 28:52Speaker 1: do it with no model? But they do it. They
- 28:55Speaker 1: got good source and everything like that. So I would
- 28:56Speaker 1: say back then it would have been a different type
- 28:59Speaker 1: of work where all you're doing is talking to sources
- 29:01Speaker 1: and you're talking to other pros. You're trying to line
- 29:03Speaker 1: up with all them, where nowadays you know you got models,
- 29:07Speaker 1: you have trends, all these other things, where pre Internet
- 29:10Speaker 1: there was none of that. I mean that labs. I
- 29:13Speaker 1: can't imagine my life without bet labs chat. So I
- 29:15Speaker 1: would say I would probably wouldn't survive, but I would
- 29:19Speaker 1: be miserable. That would be a really tough life to live.
- 29:23Speaker 1: You know, it's funny you mentioned no Internet. There's the
- 29:25Speaker 1: old school stories about Lem Banker, who was like one
- 29:29Speaker 1: of the original old school professional betters. He would go
- 29:33Speaker 1: to the airport early in the morning in Las Vegas
- 29:37Speaker 1: and as the businessmen flying into Vegas on the first
- 29:41Speaker 1: flights out from the East Coast would throw away their newspapers,
- 29:44Speaker 1: he would grab the sports section from the garbage and
- 29:47Speaker 1: start reading it to see if there was any edge
- 29:49Speaker 1: he could get on the games that night for lines
- 29:52Speaker 1: that were just being posted, you know, ten am noon
- 29:55Speaker 1: in Vegas, Alan Boston. When I was doing the book,
- 29:58Speaker 1: he used to you call the scorers tables for schools
- 30:04Speaker 1: on the East Coast and say he was Say it was,
- 30:08Speaker 1: you know, Saint Joe's Villanova playing at Boston College. He
- 30:13Speaker 1: would call the scores table at Boston College and say
- 30:15Speaker 1: he was the reporter for Villanova and asked the scores
- 30:19Speaker 1: table like who's gonna be playing, who's in the lot,
- 30:23Speaker 1: who's practicing right now, who's in shooting drills? All those
- 30:26Speaker 1: kinds of things to get the latest in the lineups
- 30:29Speaker 1: that nobody else was getting. Like you had to hustle.
- 30:31Speaker 1: You couldn't just go on Twitter and follow every beat writer. Yeah,
- 30:34Speaker 1: you get an answer. Those are harder days, really harder days.
- 30:39Speaker 1: One of our two more questions. One of our favorite
- 30:43Speaker 1: teams to bash this past year where the Los Angeles Chargers.
- 30:46Speaker 1: Somehow Staley kept his job, but Joe Lombardi, the offensive coordinator,
- 30:51Speaker 1: got fired. The defensive coordinator, Ronaldo Hill just left to
- 30:55Speaker 1: take a job working for the Miami Dolphins, and his
- 30:59Speaker 1: old boss vic Angio Brandon Stay remains. Do we think
- 31:05Speaker 1: these are improvements? Are we just rearranging deck chairs in
- 31:07Speaker 1: the Titanic? Kellen Moore is the new offensive coordinator. I
- 31:14Speaker 1: saw this and I thought, start at the top, it
- 31:18Speaker 1: to the same coach. The rest of it's not going
- 31:20Speaker 1: to make a difference. Yeah, it feels that way. It
- 31:23Speaker 1: feels like it's also an owner kind of being cheap,
- 31:25Speaker 1: like the owners should have let this guy go eat
- 31:27Speaker 1: the money, hired a new guy, but he isn't. And no,
- 31:32Speaker 1: it sucks. If you're a Chargers fan. You have the
- 31:34Speaker 1: dream snare, you have the all pro quarterback on a
- 31:38Speaker 1: rookie contract, and what did we just see? We saw
- 31:41Speaker 1: Joe Burrow, same exact draft class make it to a
- 31:43Speaker 1: super Bowl. We saw Hurts, same draft class make it
- 31:47Speaker 1: to a super Bowl. We've seen two us struggle. We've
- 31:50Speaker 1: seen Herbert struggle. I mean Herbert, he doesn't want a
- 31:53Speaker 1: playoff game yet We're this is year four reading into
- 31:56Speaker 1: So I feel bad for Chargers fans, So I'm not
- 31:59Speaker 1: gonna try to be them up, but yeah, I'd be pissed.
- 32:02Speaker 1: It's like it wasn't Herbert's fault. They let the Jaguars
- 32:06Speaker 1: come all the way back in that game. That was
- 32:07Speaker 1: the head coach is fault and the head coach is
- 32:09Speaker 1: the guy that runs the defense as well. So not good.
- 32:13Speaker 1: But you know, I'm trying to be positive because it's Herbert.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Like Herbert, he's so good. But I think we're all
- 32:20Speaker 1: at this point now where he's looking like a damn arena.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Like all the talent in the world, I just can't
- 32:27Speaker 1: see him win of the Super Bowl as is. So
- 32:29Speaker 1: that's the fear right now. If you're a Herbert a
- 32:31Speaker 1: fan or just a backer, it's like, kid, it was
- 32:34Speaker 1: all the town in the world. It might be like
- 32:36Speaker 1: betting on the Cowboys when a Super Bowl it's just
- 32:38Speaker 1: a dumb bet. It's just a team that they might
- 32:40Speaker 1: have all the hype, they just won't get there. But
- 32:42Speaker 1: I'm not there yet. With this Chargers team, I feel like,
- 32:46Speaker 1: and maybe this is a bad move because I was
- 32:49Speaker 1: so in on the Chargers two years ago. Yeah, I
- 32:54Speaker 1: was in on the chart to win the Super Bowl.
- 32:56Speaker 1: I was in on the Chargers last year to win
- 32:57Speaker 1: the division, although I don't think I was in on
- 33:00Speaker 1: them as much as I was in on the Broncos. Yeah,
- 33:04Speaker 1: the Chargers. I just Staley's one of those coaches to
- 33:07Speaker 1: me where he hasn't proven it enough for me to
- 33:11Speaker 1: believe that he can do what he needs to do
- 33:14Speaker 1: with Justin Herbert, and like, if I'm the Chargers ownership
- 33:20Speaker 1: and I wanted to win, I'm like, fucking Sean Pitts available.
- 33:25Speaker 1: I got a Hall of Fame caliber quarterback here, Get
- 33:28Speaker 1: me Sean fucking Peyton and let me fix this. Yeah,
- 33:32Speaker 1: Like I was gonna say, I didn't watch much of
- 33:33Speaker 1: Mahomes's parade speech, but I can tell you ninety percent
- 33:36Speaker 1: of it was directed towards people like Chad, which was, yeah,
- 33:40Speaker 1: Mahomes lost Tyreek, They're gona rebuild a year. Denver's by
- 33:42Speaker 1: the best team in that division. Mahomes was firing away
- 33:45Speaker 1: on all those people. So that's definitely one of those
- 33:48Speaker 1: where I'm with Chad where it's like I just don't
- 33:51Speaker 1: want to be burned back on this Chargers team again,
- 33:53Speaker 1: where they're in a division with Mahomes. Last question before
- 33:57Speaker 1: we get out of here. I am very excited about
- 34:01Speaker 1: the NFL Draft. Been reading a lot about it. The
- 34:04Speaker 1: Bears have the number one pick. What are they gonna do?
- 34:06Speaker 1: It's a couple months away. Still, we've covered it a
- 34:10Speaker 1: lot on the Favorite podcast. It's become a big betting event.
- 34:15Speaker 1: When does NFL Draft betting season heat up for you?
- 34:18Speaker 1: I say this with the last twenty four hours, a
- 34:22Speaker 1: shitload of speculation and market movement on Will Levis to
- 34:28Speaker 1: be the number one overall player taken. And that's all.
- 34:32Speaker 1: This time of year is where it's like, no, that kid.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Will you talk to anyone that watches college football? Apparently
- 34:39Speaker 1: that kid is not that good, Like nothing about him
- 34:42Speaker 1: screams good. But to me, that's irrelevant. You're looking for
- 34:46Speaker 1: a body type in a style and what would you
- 34:49Speaker 1: rather have. People You want to have a great college
- 34:52Speaker 1: quarterback in Baker Mayfield or you want the kid from
- 34:55Speaker 1: Wyoming and Josh Allen. So it's just like I say
- 34:59Speaker 1: it all the time. These kids people, especially if people
- 35:02Speaker 1: watch college football, I think they know shit. It's like, dude,
- 35:05Speaker 1: the NFL, this ain't no little boys league. There ain't
- 35:08Speaker 1: no little kids playing like college football. This is grown man.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Shit with growing man have to play a sport where
- 35:15Speaker 1: you're gonna be taking hits. So you know, I'm not
- 35:18Speaker 1: here to shoot on him, but Bryce Young off my board.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Like that kid, I might take a mid second, you know,
- 35:24Speaker 1: take a flyer on him, like a Jalen Hurts type.
- 35:28Speaker 1: That kid don't have the body for this league at all.
- 35:31Speaker 1: I just cannot see him last in this league. Now
- 35:34Speaker 1: he might take a ship ton of weight gain or
- 35:35Speaker 1: do whatever he needs to before the combine. That kid,
- 35:40Speaker 1: to me, will not will not last in this league.
- 35:42Speaker 1: He just doesn't have the body type for it. And
- 35:44Speaker 1: it's like trying to have to put these guys into
- 35:47Speaker 1: a box. But there's a reason that you know, Kyler
- 35:51Speaker 1: Murray has been hurt a lot. Lamar Jackson, He's had
- 35:54Speaker 1: multiple years now he's been hurt again. These are guys
- 35:56Speaker 1: who are smaller, good athletes, race young, no good athlete,
- 36:00Speaker 1: Like I don't think this kid's going to run under
- 36:02Speaker 1: a four or five. He's just probably one of the
- 36:05Speaker 1: smartest quarterbacks I've ever watched on tape, and he has
- 36:07Speaker 1: a credible arm. So to me, I get why Bryshrong
- 36:10Speaker 1: still is a number one pick. I got no issue
- 36:13Speaker 1: of this kid will goes number one or the kid
- 36:16Speaker 1: I love, Anthony Richardson goes number one. It's just like
- 36:19Speaker 1: I'm trying to project out like that's my job right now,
- 36:22Speaker 1: like me and Chad talked about, I don't know if
- 36:23Speaker 1: I talk on the show, I'm actually working for an
- 36:25Speaker 1: NFL team that share and doing stuff for the draft.
- 36:28Speaker 1: I've sent them a little little notes and stuff I've taken.
- 36:31Speaker 1: Right now, I'll really dive in in a month. This
- 36:34Speaker 1: is kind of as a pro better. This is kind
- 36:36Speaker 1: of like our little break here. So basically, I'll chill
- 36:38Speaker 1: right now. I mean, I'm gonna workaholics. So I've been
- 36:40Speaker 1: doing the draft anyway. I just love watching film. I
- 36:45Speaker 1: started now. But I'll say most pros, you know, like
- 36:48Speaker 1: say I got I don't know. I might have eight
- 36:51Speaker 1: people now working underneath me. I had three of them
- 36:53Speaker 1: working on the draft since December, so I means they're
- 36:56Speaker 1: they're watching tape, they're running notes, and then they're matching
- 36:59Speaker 1: up with teams. We're gonna be able to find value
- 37:01Speaker 1: betting on the draft come draft season. Me personally, my
- 37:06Speaker 1: biggest thing I studied the quarterbacks. Like to me, that's
- 37:08Speaker 1: the moneymaker. I mean, we just talked about Herbert. I
- 37:13Speaker 1: gave about Herbert to win Rookie the Year in nineteen
- 37:15Speaker 1: to one, So like, did I really think Herbert was
- 37:17Speaker 1: gonna win Rookie of the Year this first year. No,
- 37:20Speaker 1: I just thought this guy has a crazy amount of talent,
- 37:22Speaker 1: and then I got lucky with you know, Tyrod Taylor
- 37:24Speaker 1: got a needle to his lung, and then Herbert was
- 37:26Speaker 1: in the rest of the year. So you need a
- 37:28Speaker 1: little luck with these kind of things. And I'm kind
- 37:30Speaker 1: of on the same spot here of I don't really
- 37:32Speaker 1: like Bryce Young. I don't like his body type. I
- 37:35Speaker 1: got major questions with c. J. Stroud, And again I
- 37:39Speaker 1: watched this kid will I don't think he's good. I
- 37:42Speaker 1: really don't, but it's got the body. He's tall as shit,
- 37:45Speaker 1: He's like, what six four or six five, with an
- 37:48Speaker 1: absolute incredible arm, and you know, there's just a little
- 37:52Speaker 1: things like that. So yeah, it's if people are doing
- 37:57Speaker 1: draft prep now like they want to do it as pros,
- 38:01Speaker 1: I would say, trying to make a big board and
- 38:04Speaker 1: the way you think the draft's gonna play out. But
- 38:06Speaker 1: in the back of your mind, no, the Bears could
- 38:09Speaker 1: trade that pick next week and then it's all gonna
- 38:11Speaker 1: be thrown to ship. Right, It's all gonna be chaos
- 38:13Speaker 1: if they do trade that pick. So this year, for
- 38:16Speaker 1: right now, I haven't made too many bets yet on
- 38:18Speaker 1: the quarterback position. But one thing I did I gave
- 38:20Speaker 1: it on the Action app was I bet Anthony Richards
- 38:24Speaker 1: to be the first quarterback. Take it at forty to one.
- 38:27Speaker 1: It's down to twenty to one in most books. So
- 38:29Speaker 1: I think other people are in the same line of me,
- 38:31Speaker 1: of this is a good QB class, but I don't
- 38:33Speaker 1: know who the best quarterback is yet. It's the same
- 38:35Speaker 1: thing of that year Baker got taken out one. I
- 38:38Speaker 1: did not see that comming. I really did think it
- 38:39Speaker 1: was gonna be Sam Darnold, and then a day or
- 38:41Speaker 1: two before the word came out that I was Baker
- 38:44Speaker 1: and it was a mass Panico get Baker at a
- 38:46Speaker 1: plus number. So I think we might be in the
- 38:48Speaker 1: same situation now, where for months it's been Bryce Young
- 38:52Speaker 1: as the number one pick. I think that's gonna flip
- 38:54Speaker 1: in the next couple of weeks as we get more
- 38:57Speaker 1: combine tape and other stuff comes out. Listen, for every
- 39:01Speaker 1: Josh Allen body type prototype, there's a Mitch Trubisky. Yeah
- 39:09Speaker 1: that's fair, but Mitch Mitchy started for one year. That
- 39:11Speaker 1: was again that's a big red flag. Played one year
- 39:14Speaker 1: at UNC as a reminder it is the NFL offseason.
