- 0:21SPEAKER_01: Hello and hello and welcome to Slander and Slay on Buzzer.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: I am Tracy Sandler, joined by the spectacular Nikki K.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: Nikki, we're back.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: We are back, and Tracy football is back.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Oh my goodness, this is so crazy.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: It's very, very good timing.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Training camp has started.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: We were on a little bit of a break.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: We had our off time and we we are not in training camp, though.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: We are full on slander and sleigh, ready to go.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: Uh, but yeah, football is back.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: The NFL, though, year-round.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: I mean, the thing is they have cornered the market on a making it a year-round event.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: And even with training camp, we feel like football is back.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: It is today, July 29th.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: I believe the first regular season game is going to be played September 10th or something around there.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: So the NFL has really they've cornered the market on it, but we love football.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: It rains supreme.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: And uh it's exciting.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: It's you know what?
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: It's fun to see the practice videos and it's been cool.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: Go football.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Like everybody who looks like they're in shape, who looks who looks like they've got a new hairstyle, whose uh electric past from quarterback to wide receiver is causing like all the buzz on the internet, you know.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: It's it the this is when the chatter starts.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: And I've spent the last 10 seasons at Fortnite's training camp.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm not covering the team anymore.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: So this is my first year, not there in a long time.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: And it always withdrawal.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: I feel no, I feel good.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: It was time, you know.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: It's like when it was 10 seasons, it was amazing, but it was time.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: And so I feel good and it's good to kind of see it from afar and to get like a little bit more scope of the entire league because I've been so singularly focused on them.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: So it's been kind of fun to see all kinds of training camp videos.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: Jamar Chase got in a fight with like half of the Bengals team the other day.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: Like it's been it's been bananas.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: But before we get into the nitty-gritty of all that, I think congratulations are in order for our guy Justin Herbert and Madison Beer.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: They got involved.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Oh yes.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Yay! Because remember when they started a couple goals all across the board.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: And remember when they started dating, there was a feeling of this is real.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Like Justin Herbert has been so private and so quiet, and now he's out and about all the time.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: But it is, in fact, very real.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: So it's very well, and I think the the initial kind of shock uh of you know him being in a very public relationship, it wasn't just you know who he was dating, it was the fact that they were seeing a lot of places together.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: And you know, I've covered Justin for years now here in LA, and he is one of the more stoic, you know, personalities in the league.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: He doesn't he he's got a little bit of jokes to him, but he's very real, very like nuts and bolts kind of guy.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: And so to see him, to see him be in love is like whoa, you know?
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Well, it's been it's been fun.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: And so they put out their engagement photos the other day.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: A lot of actually, this is the fun stuff before training camp, too.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: A lot of like the personal stuff and the fun, the fun stuff.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: Obviously, we know Taylor and Travis got married this summer.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: Um, we had Josh Allen talking about being a dad, and and he got emotional about that, and that was nice to see because this is and this is the thing I always love covering more than anything is the human side of these athletes.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: And so getting to see that, and at the end of the day, they are just people, just like the rest of us.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: And he is a new dad and emotional about it, just like any new dad would be.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, and I think that's so relatable from anybody.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, first of all, I think a lot of people look at the Bills in general as a very likable franchise, Josh Allen, a very likeable, likable quarterback.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: You don't hear a lot of discourse from adversarial uh teams and their fan bases saying that, you know, like, oh, I can't stand Josh Allen.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: You don't hear that.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: He is a lovable dude.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: And then to have him well up with tears talking about being a father, it's like, oh my god, you're the best.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Um and and on that note, I, you know, I've been at Rams Camp for the past couple of days, and Sean McVeigh even talked about Puka Nakua, you know, who's had uh his fair share of like, you know, just growth off the field.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: That's a very nice way to say that.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: That's a very good way.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: Yes, yeah, yeah.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and and McVeigh was saying, because McVeigh knows it, like how being a father changes you.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: He said like Puka's kid was able to come out to camp, and just just that effect, I think, makes you also realize, like you said, the humanity and um that some things are bigger than the game.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: But yeah, it's it's fun.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: And then seeing just the character around these teams is it's a great time.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: Well, the most human of all sports figures, even though he is a fictional figure, is of course Ted Lasso, who has had more Ted Lasso isms and is always going beyond.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: And of course, he is a fictional character, but one that we all love, and they're coming back this week or next week is the first, I think August 5th is the first new season.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: He is now coaching the Lady Greyhounds, which I think is amazing.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: But you and I were really lucky.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: We got to go to a creator experience this week, and it was so much fun.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: And there was something about being there in this recreated set that got me so excited and also kind of brought back the human element of sports, even though he's not real.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: It doesn't mean what he's saying isn't right.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Well, I think okay, I think lasso's one of those.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Well, okay, there's a couple of things I want to say.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Wait, you guys see him at halftime of the World Cup match finals match, you know, hand the baton to Justin Bieber.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Like, I was like, that's a collaboration that just made my heart like stop.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: It it was it made me smile, big smiles because Lasso, look, I got one of these believe posts.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: I see that behind you.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I I love everything this show started out, you know, standing for and continued to message in its its first couple of seasons, right?
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Where it's like you can be, you know, a little bit silly and out of place, but if you have a pure heart and an intention with what you do, you can really move people.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: And yes, sports are about so much more than just the game being played on the field or the court.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: And so uh it it was very because it's it was it's been three years since season three, so crazy, right, right.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: And I um honestly kind of I did have someone say to me, like, you know, I could have had the season just end at season three and I'd be okay.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: Now then I well then that was their plan originally, right, right.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: And then also, you know, seeing a couple of the cast members, I asked them, I was like, was it was it fun getting the band back together?
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: And without skipping a beat, they're like, oh my gosh, it's so great.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: We we're so happy that we were able to resume and then also pick up the angle of women's sports.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Because yes, like you said, the Lady Greyhounds taking on uh what is it, a Division II women's football club over there in it for Richmond?
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: I think so.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: I think so.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna be honest, I'm not a hundred percent sure of all the details of the storyline just yet.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: But yes, I believe that that is that is correct.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: And you know, they were smart because that story that we saw ended.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: It went as far as it needed to go.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: There wasn't a lot more to do with that team.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: So to do that is awesome as and we know Jason Sudekis is such a women's sorts and loves women's sports, which we love about Jason Sudekis, so it just feels really natural and fun.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: So I'm excited about it.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's okay.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: So I have to tell you a funny thing though.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: Um, please do because I he was at the Sparks game the day, the same day that we were at the activation.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: So I always I you know, I've I've spoken with him throughout the years, and um I we were chatting, and I go, you know, how what's the difference between coaching a woman's football club versus men's one?
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: And hit him and um coach uh who's beard beard and I'm forgetting the actor's name right now.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: Please don't come at me, but um he uh they he looked at me and he goes, you know, men, you tell them to jump and they say how high, and women you ask them to jump and they say why.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: And it just goes to showing it goes to show us as females and the you know inquisitive thinking that we have to process analytical thinking that we process everything with.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: Which you're welcome, everybody.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: You are welcome that we do that.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: Um, all right.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: Well, back to American football.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: Um, it's after the World Cup, it's kind of funny.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: I still am thinking in my head, I think football and football.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: And I I know the difference in my head.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: I don't know if anybody else would understand the difference, but I know the difference in my head.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: But we are back at training camp.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: So there are some storylines already.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm gonna start with Baker Mayfield because he has not been able to come to an agreement with the Bucs on contract extensions, and he said earlier today, Thursday, that he feels disrespected and he's gonna play out the year and become a free agent.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: And here's the thing with Baker Mayfield as we've seen when that man feels disrespected, is when he is at his best.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: So the Bucks are a very interesting franchise to watch this year generally, and then they have Vitavia, who's requested a trade, but a disrespected Baker Mayfield, that's gonna make for a fun season.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: That's okay, and it's it's so funny because I have known Baker since he was playing at Oklahoma, which was where my career intersected with him.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: And yeah, chip on the shoulder Baker is the most electric, charismatic figure you could ask for, especially in the landscape of like Norman Oklahoma, right?
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: And then when he's going toe-to-toe with Patrick Mahomes or planting the flag uh on opponents' fields or horns down, you know, it's like he it he thrives, like you said, off of the disrespect, being doubted.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: He'll manufacture it sometimes, you know.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: It doesn't even have to be like legit bulletin board board material.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: He he will find it.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: I'm and I do think because at first I'm like, all right, how's that gonna work when he he feels disrespected by the the name on the front of his jersey, right?
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: But at the same time, I think he's also smart enough to know he's he's playing for his band of brothers and he's playing for his worth at this point, right?
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: Well, and that's what he said.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: He said, I feel disrespected, but I'm I'm about to go off because he's gonna be a free agent.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: So he it's it will be actually a good thing for the Bucks, as it turns out, but then not because and he's made a comment.
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: He said, if you can't come to terms with your franchise quarterback, and he's right, like what he's I don't know what else they want from him.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: I mean he really has been so good for that franchise, he's helped turn it around in a lot.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: Well, I guess not turn around because Tom Brady was there before, but he's he's helped continued success and he's been consistent for them.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: And I mean, last year, the first half of the season before there were so many injuries on the team and et cetera.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: But he was in the MVP conversation, so yeah, I don't know what else they want for him.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: So that one's gonna be an interesting one to watch.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: Do you have any other camp storylines that you have your eye on?
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: Because I have I have one and it will surprise no one, but um, I just have any other ones.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: I'm in in concontinuity with what I brought up before.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, this is year 10 of the Rams season 11 in Los Angeles, and I just look around that camp and what Sean McVeigh has helped establish in terms of culture and identity, and there's there's a joy there, there's also a ferocity, and then you bring in Miles Garrett, who's looking lean, like he best shape of his life season, yeah.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, right, and that's also another narrative of training camp.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: But um, I I I know, like I just think the Rams are in it to really, and of course, every team says they're in it to win it all, but this, like, especially the way the NFC championship was, I feel like was the de facto Super Bowl last season.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: Um, and now the Super Bowl is going to be in LA in 2027.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Not to be so ethnocentric or you know, here, but I think this is the Rams are going to be every bit the contender.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: And I bet we're getting Aaron Donald out of retirement.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: Oh, I'm sure we are.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: And the Rams are not shy about they don't flat out say it's Super Bowl or bust, but it's Super Bowl or bust.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's yeah, that is how they have looked at this season, and that is why they went out and got Miles Garrett.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: That is why they are going to really hope that Aaron Donald comes back at some point, but they're not, I wouldn't say they're hiding it, they don't flat out say it, but they're not hiding it.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: They did the last time they won the Super Bowl, they did that.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: They went all in for that season.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: It was Super Bowl or bust, and they won the Super Bowl.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: So I think they're hoping to create that.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: Now, if it's interesting because, you know, in during a course of a football season, so many things happened.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: And last year, when the Packers got Micah Parsons, it was like, well, that's it.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: The Packers are the gonna be in the Super Bowl, right?
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: And you know, things there were other issues on the Packers, and then he got hurt, so you just never know.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: So many things can happen during the course of the season.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: But I would say, yeah, the Rams are all in on this.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: They would like to have another championship at home, which would actually really be something if you have two Super Bowl wins at home, is pretty amazing.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: Um, but they're gonna be fun to watch.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: And I think for the rest of the NFC West, it almost feels like, and I've said this before.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: Uh I can't remember if I've said on the show, but I've said it before that I felt like when the Miles Garrett news came in, like the other buildings in the NFC West, like everyone just went like, like Arizona, even Seattle and San Francisco.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: And actually, John Lynch told a really funny story last week that he has said to Kyle Shanahan, like John Wooden said something to the effect of you can't worry about your opponents, worry about your own teams.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: And when the news for Miles Garrett came in, Kyle jokingly said, F John Wooden, because I'm not gonna not worry about Miles Garrett.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: So um it should be it should be a fun season, but I think this is it's gonna be between the Rams and the Seahawks, but uh, this is the Rams division to lose in some ways.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: The 49ers have potential to be a really good team, but you have a lot of aging stars coming back from injuries.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: Um, they're already dealing with a pretty big injury to Ricky Pearsall, backup running back Jordan James, or projected backup running back Jordan James has already broken several ribs.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: So I I just don't know what's going to happen over there, but I think this really is you have a substation near the practice facility.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: You know, the I have always thought the substation thing was so ridiculous and a lot of hooey to use a word that no one uses anymore.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: No, I'm just I like that word.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: Hui, I know he no, but yeah, it's yes, it's yes, it's exhaustive, I feel for the 49ers because the talent is there, yeah.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: And you know, the also the these franchise is a it's a championship caliber franchise that builds responsibly, right?
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: This these injuries are just wack-a-doodle, they are wack-a-doodle, and the fact that they've started the Ricky Pearsall injury is apparently connected to his PCL injury from last year, but they are they said they're looking at all the options and potentially including surgery.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: So we um we will see.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: Speaking of the 49ers, um, as we know, Kyle Shanahan got in a very serious car accident a couple of weeks ago.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: Um, that that news was not released until I think 10 or 11 days after.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: Uh, he met with the local media the other day and he said he took fault for the accident.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: He was on his phone and dropped between the seats, and because he felt that the other person was getting blamed, and they had said there was like there was no one got cited, and no one did get cited.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: It was an accident, but um, he took responsibility for it.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: But there's been all this discourse, which I don't understand, frankly.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: Um, when we go back to thinking about the human part and bigger than football, about how it should have been released earlier, and he got in a car accident.
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: No drugs were involved, no alcohol was involved, no one was arrested, like none of that.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: He got in a very serious accident.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: I don't have any issue if he would like to wait to announce that while he's recovering.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: I think, and this okay, this could kind of be a bigger discourse on internet culture in general and where we're at right now in 2026.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: And um, I'm going to kind of we're this is where we get into the slander and slay part of this conversation.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: Slander and sleigh because yeah, yeah, because um there was, I don't know if you saw on TikTok or something, but somebody in New York was filming random people and filmed a couple making out, and then the internet kind of dove in on that couple and figured out it was revealed that allegedly, you know, they were both not initially together and maybe had other partners in the mix and were co-workers or whatever.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: And it's like, first of all, they're not doing anything illegal.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: The internet went on a witch hunt, like we're not entitled to that information.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: That's private.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: Like, and it's the same with even if Shannon's a public, he didn't he didn't break any laws, he got in a car accident.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: So I don't and it was we are not yeah, yeah, we are not entitled to that information as long as it's not like like you know, drunk driving or you know, if he killed like that's not that's not ours to know it to be rightful, righteous to know.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: And so I I applaud him for taking ownership and accountability and um also it sheds light on not being on your phone while driving.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: So I think PSA 100%.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: And he one thing about Kyle Shana, I covered him for nine years, and one of the I loved covering him for a number of reasons, but one of them was he's always transparent and honest, and so yeah, like I don't not and not everybody is certainly not a lot of people in this league are and it's and there's things people want to keep private and all of that, but he's always been honest and transparent, and I gave him so much credit for for for doing that and admitting it.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: And it's it's funny that you say that about the phone because I will say anytime since if my phone buzzes and I have like the urge to look at it, I'm like, it's just not worth it.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: No, no, I don't do so.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: It is it is a good PSA, but you know, I just I just didn't understand the discourse around this.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: And you're right, it's internet culture.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: What are we entitled to see and not entitled to see?
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: And I think because of because of the way social media works, we think we're entitled to all of it, and I don't know that we are.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I I agree.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: I agree.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: No, it was funny that it was funny that I mean, not funny, but this story, it it felt very tangential to this other, you know, very niche TikTok discussion going on.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: Cause it's like that is a thing on on TikTok where it's like, I mean, have you seen those videos?
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: Like, hey, if your partner is named X and they're flying on this flight to this flight, they're talking to another girl right now or whatever, you know, and it's like no, I have not I have not seen those.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: That's opening.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: Maybe that's a rabbit hole I should take.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: No, but it's people trying people outing strangers for behavior that first of all, it's it's not illegal, maybe it's frowned up, but you don't know.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: You don't know what you actually have no idea.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: And also if I was getting cheated on, the last place I would want to hear about it is on TikTok with millions of people.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: Sorry, having discourse about it.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that that actually is a very good point.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: That's fair.
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: We actually we had this conversation last night at the Dodger game.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: One of my friends was saying, can we stop releasing like law enforcement stop releasing um the drunk driving like arrests of celebrities?
- 21:00SPEAKER_01: Because you know, most recently with Tony Romo and yeah, the body and that's and this whole thing, and when he said I was on the way to see the grandparents, and someone said, Well, all of his grandparents are deceased.
- 21:11SPEAKER_01: He has kids when he says he's on his way to see the grandparents, he means his kids' grandparents.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: But and my friend said it's not right, and I don't disagree.
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: I don't think it's right.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: I think unfortunately that is the flip side of being the fame and all the things.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: Being a public figure, and then that case, you know, I do I think we need to see those videos?
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: No.
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: Do I again like would we want something like that released?
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: Absolutely not.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: But I guess that is the flip side of being a public figure, but it in that case it is different than what happened with Kyle Shanagan because there was a law broken and there was no drunk driving.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: So it you're right, it is a bigger discussion on internet culture.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: And you make a really good point for all of you people that think you're helping by outing people.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: No one wants to find out on TikTok that someone they're dating is cheating on them.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: Let's just let's just make that a blanket.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Statement.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Full stop.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: Full stop.
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: Full stop.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: No one wants to find that out on TikTok.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: So let's put that in one of our core principles of this show.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: I think that it should be a core principle.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: No one wants to find out on TikTok.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: I'll say social media the whole.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: That well, yeah, and like and then we think because I think about the cold play thing, and that was, I mean, it was it was comical, but not for the partners involved.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: But that was also a very like, I don't know, that wasn't, I don't think that was social media.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: That was a reaction to a public like being on the jumbo truck.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: Yes, that was a very you're in that one.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: You are gonna that one's nuanced.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: That's nuance in the gray area.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: That's nuanced.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: I think that one is there are questions there and probably things that we should think about on core principles, but that one was a little different because it wasn't someone sitting on a plane, but and you know what's actually interesting?
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: So I went to Europe this summer for vacation, which was amazing.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: It was an epic, epic trip.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: But on Air France, because I flew Air France from um when's I from Italy to Paris and then from you know Paris back to Los Angeles, and they have a in there when they do the like fasten your seat, bell, blah, blah, blah all the stuff, they say do not take pictures or videos of people on the plane without their permission.
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: And I'm alrighty.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: I was like, okay.
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: I and I think that's a really good point.
- 23:28SPEAKER_01: Because I think about that too sometimes, like when you are somewhere taking a picture, and just you, if you have someone in the background, make maybe I I try to actually clean that up in a photo.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: If I have like a random person, the magic erasers, I'm like, they didn't ask to be on my Instagram page.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: So, you know, depending on the situation.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: But anyways, I thought that was really interesting.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: Um, which means something happened, someone got filmed and they didn't want to and sued or something, like something happened.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: But I'm curious to see how many more airlines, restaurants, all that kind of stuff are gonna say things like that.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: Because, you know, it's one thing to be the background of photo, it's another thing to film someone getting upset about something or whatever, and not saying that behavior's okay either.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: But these are once again nuanced.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: Very we've we've lost the plot when it comes to hiding behind our phone.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: So I I'm all for less of recording strangers without their consent.
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: We should put that um as a core principle as well.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: Okay, perfect.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: We will we have two core principles.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: Okay, we are going to move on because the MLB trade deadline is upon us.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: My core principle is that the Dodgers should win the World Series every year.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: So that is my segue into the MLB trade deadline.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: But the biggest name, of course, the one that has been all the chatter and all the talk about talk about is Tarek Scuball.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: And the on Wednesday, the Tigers were up seven to one, and Scuball left the game, and then the Tigers lost the game to someone that they're fighting, the White Sox, who they're fighting for for a wildcard spot with.
- 25:01SPEAKER_01: And so that seemed to give everybody the impression, including Jeff Passon, who really knows these things, uh, the impression that he's being traded.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: And Jeff Passon said it could happen within a day or two.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: So it's it's gonna be an interesting sweepstakes.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: Uh, you are you cover the Dodgers, and we are very LA centric today, but these teams are kind of at the center of you know, the Rams and the Dodgers are the center of their respective sports.
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, there are a lot of people that want the Brewers to get him.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: I'm sure the Brewers would love to get him as well.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: But for both these teams or any of these teams, it's how much are you willing to give up?
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: And chances are he's scoop all, so it's worth it because it might win you a World Series.
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: But you're also probably it's a rental.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: I hate that term in baseball, but it is like a three-month rental because he's a free agent.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: So, unless you're gonna like trade for him and then sign him to like a you know, a large contract, it's probably a rental.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: So if it's the Brewers, that's not gonna happen.
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: It would be a rental, and that would be that.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: If it's the Dodgers, they potentially could do that where they would trade for him and sign him to like large contract in theory.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: Maybe the Phillies could too, or the Braves.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: But what are your thoughts around this?
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: And I think for the Dodgers, things have changed.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: Sho Hague isn't pitching right now, they've got Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow coming back from injury.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: There are questions there.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: What are what are your thoughts on this, Nicky?
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: I just it's interesting because I don't want there to be a lockout next season.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: And I think I think the Dodgers, I mean, but I also don't blame the Dodgers doing whatever and whatever they can and and need to to you know guarantee that three Pete.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: And this is a front office that has been absolutely, I mean, I'd say it's the best in professional sports right now.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: And yeah, and yeah, the things have changed with Shohei's pitching availability.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: And um, I think as much as I'm an LA fan, I and and would love to have scuba in in the the Dodger Blue, I don't want I don't want the league to stop next year.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: You know, we need baseball in the summer.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: Well, I agree with that.
- 27:13SPEAKER_01: However, with or without the Dodgers getting scoop all, there's gonna be a lockout next year.
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: So I think that the the flip side of that is if you're the Dodgers, like, well, knowing that most likely there'll be a lockout of some sort, knowing that you want a three-piece, like you go all in.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: And and I mentioned aging core that's happening on the Dodgers too.
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: They're by no means old, but some of these guys are getting up there in years, the last few years of their career.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: And so, how long can they keep this going?
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, that guess that's the flip side of it, knowing that there most likely is going to be a lockout either way, if you want the three-peat, but they also have some pretty spectacular prospects that they're not willing to part with, and they're gonna have to budge on that if they want school ball, right?
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: So I'm I'm intrigued, and I wonder what the brewers, how compelling could the brewer's package be for him?
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: They have a very good farm system, they potentially have one of the best farm systems, if not the best farm system in baseball.
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: And the Dodgers have also a very, very, very good farm system.
- 28:17SPEAKER_01: So you're basically these two teams, in my in my, I'm gonna call it my expert opinion, even though you know I'm a fan, but I feel like I'm kind of an expert on the Dodgers.
- 28:26SPEAKER_01: I think these two teams in that regard probably can put together the most compelling packages.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: Now, the Dodgers have the luxury of also being able to trade Emmet Sheehan, you know, like they give them a picture immediately.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: You can give them Emmett Sheehan or Robleski.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: I don't think they would trade Robusky, though I really don't, but you know, I think you you give them Emmet Sheehan, you can give him two prospects, and that is an immediate, it feels like an immediate need because we've seen the flashes with Emmet Sheehan, and he's young and he's starting his career.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: And I think the league thinks highly of him, even though he has struggled of late.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 28:59SPEAKER_00: No, he is a name that that has weight to it.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: Now, I know this happens in baseball sorry, in basketball.
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: There are general managers who will not do business with other teams out of whether it's rivalries, pettiness, uh per pers does that exist in baseball or is it more transactional?
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: I think it does exist in that, but that being said, I have noticed it's funny that you asked that because I really thought that was sort of a thing.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: Like the Angels wouldn't trade Shohei to the Dodgers.
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: Um, knew they were gonna lose them instead of got nothing instead of getting something for him, they just knew they were gonna lose him, and so they wouldn't trade Shohei to the Dodgers.
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: Um, but then over the last couple of years, I have seen some like interdivisional trades.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: So you know, I think from the Tigers perspective, for them, if they're gonna trade Scuba, they're gonna trade him to who's ever gonna give them the very best package.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: And that's that's what it's gonna come down to.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: I think also pretty much it's all, I think it's not even pretty much, I think it's just all National League teams that seem to be in on Scuball right now.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: So from that perspective, too, it doesn't have any effect on them.
- 30:14SPEAKER_01: And they maybe they don't want to be the reason for a lockout, but from their perspective too, they're probably like, there's gonna be a lockout anyway.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: We're gonna trade if we're trading him, let's get everything we can get for him.
- 30:27SPEAKER_01: Now, to me, it says a lot about the Tigers that they're not willing to pay one of the best pitchers in baseball who on the aggregate has been pretty spectacular for him.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: And that's part of the will reason they're willing to trade him because he's been gonna be a free agent, they think they're gonna lose him anyway.
- 30:43SPEAKER_01: But that is so bizarre to me.
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: You have one of the top three, four or five pitchers in baseball on your team.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: If you're not gonna pay him, who are you gonna pay?
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: Or maybe, and maybe they're not gonna pay anybody, maybe that's their thing, right?
- 30:57unknown: I don't know.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: I know it's a shame, it's a shame for the that fan base because it is, and they've been exciting.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: You know, last year they they made the playoffs, and they've definitely been an exciting, kind of fun team to watch.
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: But you know, this and to me, and this is probably a bigger discussion, but those are the things that are ruining baseball, not the team that's willing to play the players because they want to win, right?
- 31:21SPEAKER_01: But that is a another discussion that we could argue with all kinds of people about because people have lots of opinions on this.
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: Um, but you know, that's kind of that is my feeling on that.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: So that's where we're at with the trade down line.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: It's on Monday.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: I want to say it's six Eastern Three Pacific, but don't quote me on that because that may not actually be right.
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: Um, so but it's Monday.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: I do know for sure it's Monday.
- 31:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh, so it should be uh an exciting few days, and there are other names out there to be traded.
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: I think uh Luisa Rias from the Giants is a name that people are gonna be very interested in potentially.
- 31:55SPEAKER_01: To Oscar Hernandez, which would be heartbreaking, is a name that people are interested in.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: There are other players out there, it's just this is the big, this is the big one to watch.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: No, I'm excited.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: Do you think it goes like all the way into Monday?
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: Well, Jeff Passon said on Wednesday he thought it would happen in one or two days.
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: So I don't know.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: And I I actually was thinking about that when he said that it kind of surprised me because it's like, well, wouldn't you want to go like up to the wire?
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: But at the end of the day, if you have two to four teams that are in, yeah, and you're talking to those teams, you don't need this to go into Monday.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: Like you can, you're gonna get what you're gonna get, and you can you can do that.
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: It's kind of a little bit of a rare or a different situation that way.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: And we've already seen a couple trades happen.
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: So we'll see.
- 32:45SPEAKER_01: I um the one to two day thing, I was like, oh my god.
- 32:48SPEAKER_01: And then I'm such a sucker that someone posted, and they do this on purpose, on Instagram a picture of Scuba that says, like, you know, Detroit to LA, and it was like, oh my god, it happened, but it didn't happen.
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: It was like hypothetically, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: And that's not that's not nice.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: It's actually not, it's not comic because my heart went racing.
- 33:09SPEAKER_01: I got so excited, and I was like, Oh, just just kidding.
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: It's not nice.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: No, so there's my next core principal.
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: Be nicer on the internet, which actually should be a core principle.
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: Be nicer on the internet, be nicer on the internet.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: So we shall see that we will know next week.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: We'll be talking about it.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: So um, yeah, that's kind of what's what's going on.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: But we can't leave without uh one of my favorite segments, and that is K-pop, where you take me on your internet rabbit hole of the week.
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: Okay, well, Tracy, speaking with the Dodgers, you know, kind of lore.
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: And this is this is more so because I know you've been on a deep dive, but we're getting tapes released of Shohei Otani's interpreter, Ipe, who who has been found guilty in the huge gambling scandal that was just it was so so toxic and dramatic the at the start of two seasons ago.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: Uh and now I I want to know what you've learned as we're unearthing and like in terms of the conspiracy theories, and what did Shoei have any knowledge?
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: What have you understood from that?
- 34:19SPEAKER_01: So I've listened to the first two, and the third one was released today on Thursday, so I haven't listened to it yet.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: I would say in the first two, I really haven't learned anything.
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: You hear the tape of Ipe talking to the reporter and with his first story that he told that Joey was covering up for him, and or it was, you know, bailing him out on money and all of that.
- 34:42SPEAKER_01: So you hear that, so you hear him say it.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: Um, but I haven't learned anything really new yet.
- 34:51SPEAKER_01: I am generally not a conspiracy theorist in in most things.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: And I just feel like on this, I understand why they're doing it.
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: I think it'll be interesting, but I don't know.
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: And again, it isn't there's six episodes.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: So the way that they're doing it, they did two Tuesday, and then it's gonna be a Thursday, Tuesday, Thursday, Tuesday until it ends, which is gonna be pretty soon.
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't know if we are really learning anything new.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: And I saw the reporter whose name is Trisha, Trisha, but I can't remember her last name right now, um on a on the Rich Eisen show.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: And it doesn't sound like from what she said that she's trying to implicate Shohei or she's trying to poke holes in it.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: I think she's just telling the story of what happened, but you know, it'll be interesting to see.
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: But I mean, there was a full federal investigation.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: Like this was not, and and people who are like, well, MLB and the government wanted to cover it up for Shohei.
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: The government does not care about covering it up for Shohei.
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: That's I I disagree with that like wholeheartedly.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: Um, and I just I have a hard time believing that Shohei had some insane gambling problem.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: And then and then there's the other thing that he had this insane gambling problem, and then they got caught and he just stopped.
- 36:05SPEAKER_01: Like, if you're that big a gambling addict, like you're that big, then he was just able to stop and go abuse his own.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: Like, and he was able after that that was the 50-50 season, and then they win a world say like that.
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: He was able to just like, okay, well, I was super addicted to gambling and lost millions of dollars.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: Uh, and now I'll just I just stop because I got caught.
- 36:25SPEAKER_01: Like, I mean, it doesn't really make any sense generally, but I investigation was done.
- 36:31SPEAKER_01: He was found to be a victim.
- 36:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, I what I'll be interested to hear, because I remember this in the investigation, unless I'm remembering remembering incorrectly, and so I'll be interested to hear if this comes in the podcast.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: But I think that um the government had a a uh voicemail from the bookie to ePay that said, I see your boy walking his dog in Manhattan Beach.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: You better pay up or else.
- 36:53SPEAKER_01: Like I remember that being now.
- 36:55SPEAKER_01: I could be misremembering it, but I don't think I would make that up.
- 36:58SPEAKER_01: That feels like the kind of thing I didn't just like pop up, like no, no, no.
- 37:01SPEAKER_01: There was some there was something.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: There was something, right?
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: So I think so.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: I'm interested to see.
- 37:07SPEAKER_01: So next week I'll have list by the time we record, I'll have listened to four, maybe the fifth.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: Um, and I will be able to tell you more.
- 37:16SPEAKER_01: But I just it doesn't sound like it's any like the people who think that he's guilty and it's a cover-up are gonna think that no matter what.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: They will come up with some reason that it is, no matter how much evidence you give them that it's not.
- 37:31SPEAKER_01: But you know, I think it'll be interesting to listen to it.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: I understand why they did it.
- 37:35SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't think from the Dodgers or show his perspective, though, that they really really have any effect on them right now.
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: Perfect.
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: And my last little one is as we're learning, getting more tea leaves about how LeBron James came to announce, you know, his his final decision, his last decision.
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: Do you believe that he truly waited until the last minute or that he knew Philadelphia was like, I just I just gotta believe the way that man has always been up operating and calculating his entire career.
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: I think once Jalen Brown became a 76er, then it was like, oh, okay.
- 38:12SPEAKER_01: I I agree with that.
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: I think there may have been, he may have been waiting a minute to see if there were a couple other teams that made similar tight moves.
- 38:21SPEAKER_01: But I would imagine that once, at least at the very least, I would say that as soon as Jalen Brown became a 76er, he was like 80% going to Philly.
- 38:32SPEAKER_01: And it's kind of funny because it sounds so not right, like when you first hear it.
- 38:38SPEAKER_01: But then with the renderings of him in the jersey, I'm like, he's basically always been a 76er.
- 38:42SPEAKER_01: Like it tells me it feels right.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: But this, you know, he's at the end of his career.
- 38:45SPEAKER_01: This is he's he's like the Rams.
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: It's we're winning a championship robust, and he's gonna go who wherever gave him the best option.
- 38:55SPEAKER_01: And as soon as they got Jalen Brown, that was gonna be the best option.
- 38:58SPEAKER_01: Like the idea of the Warriors really didn't make any sense because the Warriors are not a LeBron James away from winning a championship, right?
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I think that was so you know, some of these other teams made some sense, but I think really, I think you're right.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: Once Philly got Jalen Brown, it probably was like, okay, and then waited a little while to make the announcement so not to get overshadowed by Jalen Brown, perhaps.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: What do you make of the idea of him living in New York and maybe it's like chopper to practices in Philly?
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: I know JJ Reddick and uh there was a Chamberlain did it before him, which is just pretty, it's pretty entertaining to think about that that concept.
- 39:37SPEAKER_01: I think that that I mean, listen, I'm not a professional athlete and I do not have the means that LeBron has to make it super easy to be choppering between New York and Philly.
- 39:46SPEAKER_01: But I would think that after like three weeks of that, you would be like, I this is this is right.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: Like we deal with traffic here in LA.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: We know what commute time is, and I just also LeBron gets to the arena five hours before tip-off.
- 40:02SPEAKER_00: Like is that you know, like I mean, I guess travel is travel either way, but still, yeah.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: I mean, that feels I don't know.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: I I think I don't know.
- 40:11SPEAKER_01: I also feel like if he's in, I could be wrong again, but like I think if he's in, he's in.
- 40:16SPEAKER_01: And he wants to win the championship.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's the other thing.
