Latest / Foul Territory / Yanks slump, J.D. Martinez calls out 2016 Astros, Weekend Matchups
Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: It's Friday, people, it is Friday, aft Fraisier Friday and
- 0:07Speaker 1: krats dancing and umpires getting better. When we talked to
- 0:12Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal will go through his in depth story that
- 0:17Speaker 1: covers umpires that are happy and some umpires that are
- 0:20Speaker 1: not happy about the way the ABS Challenge system has
- 0:23Speaker 1: played out. I'm going to give you a very happy
- 0:25Speaker 1: example to start the show. This occurred last night, and
- 0:31Speaker 1: I'm going to have our two lucky panelists guess if
- 0:35Speaker 1: this was called a ball or a strike? Yes, Kratz
- 0:39Speaker 1: and Todd check this pitch out and tell me if
- 0:42Speaker 1: that was a ball or a strike in San Diego.
- 0:46Speaker 2: That was a miss call right there.
- 0:48Speaker 1: That was a strike down the pipe.
- 0:51Speaker 3: I think the check swing sometimes it gets a mumpire sometimes,
- 0:55Speaker 3: but that ball should never ever be messed.
- 0:59Speaker 1: That was right down the punt, and that, folks, is
- 1:01Speaker 1: why the ABS Challenge system has been implemented. Kratz, is
- 1:06Speaker 1: it perfect? No? Is there a two D verse three
- 1:09Speaker 1: D situation? Is there a median variance where things can
- 1:15Speaker 1: be off and there's calls overturned by fractions of an inch?
- 1:19Speaker 4: Doesn't change? Why is it bad that something is a
- 1:23Speaker 4: yes or no? Look, it's a yes or no, it's
- 1:26Speaker 4: there or it's not there. And this is the one
- 1:28Speaker 4: that before you set up in and they go, you know,
- 1:31Speaker 4: they miss it out over the place. Oh yo, you
- 1:35Speaker 4: were set up in. I didn't get a good look
- 1:37Speaker 4: at that. And I'm like, I just made the last
- 1:39Speaker 4: six of them look tremendous and you didn't seem to
- 1:41Speaker 4: get a good look at them either. So this is
- 1:43Speaker 4: what it's for, abs challenge system. But before we get
- 1:47Speaker 4: into it, do I get to have one challenge? That's
- 1:49Speaker 4: something that came up in the show yesterday that we
- 1:51Speaker 4: didn't even get to discuss more of.
- 1:53Speaker 5: Can I get one challenge.
- 1:55Speaker 2: That you can challenge?
- 1:56Speaker 1: Yeah, you can get one. You get one and then
- 1:58Speaker 1: we'll give you this. You'll keep it if we like it,
- 2:00Speaker 1: If not, we take it away, right.
- 2:02Speaker 2: We'll review it.
- 2:03Speaker 5: So here's my challenge.
- 2:05Speaker 4: Early in the show, Todd said something that was very
- 2:08Speaker 4: concerning to me about the New Jersey education system. You
- 2:12Speaker 4: went to a ten Am high school baseball game during
- 2:15Speaker 4: a school day.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Explain more so, very good question. But our easter break
- 2:21Speaker 3: is this week. Easter breaks are different for each county,
- 2:25Speaker 3: each town, or spring break or you know, spring break.
- 2:29Speaker 3: I still call it easter break. So our spring break
- 2:31Speaker 3: is this Monday through Friday, while others were last week.
- 2:36Speaker 3: I've heard on the news too, they're trying to make
- 2:37Speaker 3: it one official week so everybody in New Jersey can
- 2:40Speaker 3: have it. I think it's all weird. Just make make
- 2:42Speaker 3: it one week in New Jersey the same. Everybody has
- 2:45Speaker 3: it differently. So you live on this side of the track,
- 2:47Speaker 3: it's this week. If you live on the other, it's
- 2:49Speaker 3: last week was spring break, so.
- 2:52Speaker 4: You had to play a team that also had spring
- 2:55Speaker 4: break at.
- 2:56Speaker 5: The same time.
- 2:57Speaker 2: I all they could have made it twelve o'clock.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Yeah that there should be no game at ten o'clock.
- 3:04Speaker 5: Education system does not.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Let's make sure it's student athletes in New Jersey and
- 3:09Speaker 4: not athletes students.
- 3:10Speaker 2: That's that's my only Your challenge is negative.
- 3:14Speaker 6: You're over one right now, so yeah, exactly, good try
- 3:17Speaker 6: you lost the challenge.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Spring break is now, it's a valid excuse. Just the
- 3:21Speaker 2: last day of spring. Well, Sunday is the last day.
- 3:24Speaker 5: Of spring, not a ten am game. There's no excuse
- 3:27Speaker 5: for a ten am game.
- 3:28Speaker 4: And I'm talking to you, Diamondation, okay, nothing or eleven please?
- 3:32Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 3:34Speaker 3: Oh listen, they have those eight am or big big
- 3:37Speaker 3: oh those those hit, those hit hard. We have these
- 3:41Speaker 3: eight am games sometimes even in all tournaments, we have them,
- 3:45Speaker 3: and it's just depending on where you live.
- 3:48Speaker 2: It's tough. It's tough.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Eight am is the start of the game start.
- 3:53Speaker 3: I have an eight am game tomorrow. Actually, I'm driving
- 3:55Speaker 3: down to Belmore, New Jersey hour and a half away.
- 3:59Speaker 3: I'm staying overnight tonight and I have an eight am
- 4:03Speaker 3: game tomorrow, Room eight U tournament eight am.
- 4:11Speaker 5: It's not I had another challenge.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Yeah, that's not cool. We don't like that.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Whoever's doing that, stop it. All of them are yeah,
- 4:19Speaker 1: all of them are trying to get Yeah, the games
- 4:22Speaker 1: and the kashish and then pay the ni L for
- 4:25Speaker 1: all those high school stars. I dting about the last part,
- 4:27Speaker 1: but only a little bit. Okay, let's charge charge amount
- 4:35Speaker 1: is presented by Game Changer. More on how Game Changer
- 4:39Speaker 1: can change everything for you and watching your kids play
- 4:42Speaker 1: a little ball. There you go. Oh that's a future
- 4:48Speaker 1: I'm gonna ask you about. First, I'm gonna ask you
- 4:50Speaker 1: about some weekend matchups that people should think about. Let's
- 4:53Speaker 1: start with the Yankees in the race. Since you know
- 4:56Speaker 1: the Yanks pretty well. A series didn't work out too
- 4:59Speaker 1: well for them. Some decent pitching the last couple of
- 5:02Speaker 1: days for the Yanks, but yeah, the A's really shut
- 5:05Speaker 1: them down. As not known for their pitching, Jeffrey Springs
- 5:08Speaker 1: was able to shine. Is there a potential problem with
- 5:13Speaker 1: the Yankees offense? Names like Caballero, McMahon, Bellinger hasn't done
- 5:19Speaker 1: much yet. It's probably easier to go to reverse. Wow,
- 5:22Speaker 1: Ben Rice is looking good.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Ben Rice is looking good. Judge, Judge is still doing
- 5:28Speaker 2: his thing.
- 5:29Speaker 6: Power wise, It like two, he usually is like a three.
- 5:32Speaker 6: It's early, Yeah, it's early. Yeah, I think there's you know,
- 5:36Speaker 6: I'm not a panic button. But at the same time,
- 5:39Speaker 6: maybe a little worrisome. You know, you're playing against a
- 5:41Speaker 6: team where you should win the series every single time,
- 5:44Speaker 6: and twice on Tuesday, like one hit and it barely
- 5:48Speaker 6: got through the whole.
- 5:49Speaker 3: If they shifted just a little bit more over, it
- 5:51Speaker 3: could have been an easy ground ball out. They're not
- 5:55Speaker 3: getting it done in situational hitting, and then when they
- 5:57Speaker 3: go up, they're not stepping on the guy his throat
- 6:00Speaker 3: to you know, lack for better words, to win these games.
- 6:04Speaker 3: You know, Jazz got to get going a little bit.
- 6:06Speaker 3: The pitching has been fine. I mean Weather's had an
- 6:09Speaker 3: outstanding yesterday, he got it outstanding outing. I think he
- 6:13Speaker 3: went seven plus, only gave up one run, you know,
- 6:19Speaker 3: stant and he started off good. He's you know, he's
- 6:21Speaker 3: slowly but surely. He's one of the guys that have
- 6:24Speaker 3: been doing well. It's just the bottom of the lineup
- 6:27Speaker 3: has been a big struggle right now. Austin Wells, McMahon,
- 6:31Speaker 3: Ca Baerra and In Rosario with the two big home runs,
- 6:34Speaker 3: so they decided to put him back in. They moved
- 6:36Speaker 3: Trent Grisham down to the eight hole. So it's a
- 6:39Speaker 3: plethora of a guys that they got to really figure
- 6:41Speaker 3: out and get going. I said it before the season,
- 6:44Speaker 3: like with all the injuries they had, I said, listen,
- 6:46Speaker 3: if they're you know, within the next two months the
- 6:49Speaker 3: start of the year, if they're five hundred a little
- 6:51Speaker 3: bit over, I think I would take that, known what
- 6:53Speaker 3: the injuries they have. But now, you know, the hitting's
- 6:56Speaker 3: got to start coming through, and that's the biggest concern
- 7:00Speaker 3: and I have right now people are like, oh wait,
- 7:01Speaker 3: it's earlier in the year. Well, guess what, these these
- 7:03Speaker 3: games count Yeah, they got to they got to figure
- 7:06Speaker 3: out and they got to go down to tamp And
- 7:07Speaker 3: and do what they do.
- 7:08Speaker 1: BYT Todd, father knows you're looking for a good deal.
- 7:15Speaker 1: If you're going to a game this weekend and you
- 7:18Speaker 1: haven't used the SEK code territory ten at this point, man,
- 7:22Speaker 1: you just don't like say you don't want to. I've
- 7:25Speaker 1: actually been auto when I'm going to hitting the game,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and I actually will. I mean, we had the NBA
- 7:29Speaker 1: MLB debate the other day, but I'll look. Sometimes they
- 7:32Speaker 1: hit an Orlando Magic game down in the home in Orlando,
- 7:36Speaker 1: right and I'm auto Sea geek. So it in the
- 7:39Speaker 1: code and whatever the ticket price is, I just took
- 7:43Speaker 1: ten percent off of the ticket price. Also, they help
- 7:46Speaker 1: us with the green and the red dots to figure
- 7:48Speaker 1: out where the good seats are. Over thirty five million
- 7:50Speaker 1: downloads for the app.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think, honestly, it's something where they make
- 7:55Speaker 3: it very simple for you.
- 7:56Speaker 2: They understand you know what you're looking for.
- 7:58Speaker 3: It's very you know, affordable wherever you want to go
- 8:02Speaker 3: and watch the game too as well. So for that,
- 8:05Speaker 3: get up on there, get the discount and go enjoy
- 8:07Speaker 3: a game wherever. You feel and wherever you are, the
- 8:10Speaker 3: money that you have that you can afford, and they
- 8:12Speaker 3: do a great.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Job they do.
- 8:14Speaker 1: So the code for you Territory one zero, ten percent
- 8:17Speaker 1: off your next set of tickets at seat Geeks. So
- 8:19Speaker 1: check out what the weekends late looks like. I think
- 8:22Speaker 1: we went over this the other day. If you're looking
- 8:24Speaker 1: for premier pitching matchups, Sunday is the data circle on
- 8:28Speaker 1: the calendar. There were a number of either number one
- 8:30Speaker 1: starters or some big names that you want to watch,
- 8:33Speaker 1: big stuff pitchers that are out there. Click the link
- 8:35Speaker 1: in the description to download the app and then you
- 8:38Speaker 1: have the code that we're talking about automatically added to
- 8:40Speaker 1: your account so that you can use it now or
- 8:43Speaker 1: you can use it later. You can't use it forever, though,
- 8:45Speaker 1: so make sure you check it out. Territory one zero. Yeah,
- 8:49Speaker 1: and you know the Rays always play them tough, Kratz.
- 8:52Speaker 1: I saw some excuses getting thrown out there. Not from
- 8:55Speaker 1: the team unless I miss something postgame, but oh it's
- 8:58Speaker 1: cold in New York. Derek Lewandowski, our Pinstripe Territory host,
- 9:03Speaker 1: brought up a nice point, Yeah it's cold in New York.
- 9:06Speaker 1: When we got towards the end of the season into
- 9:08Speaker 1: October as well. So the Diamondbacks played in New York
- 9:11Speaker 1: last night. They scored seven runs. They weren't cold.
- 9:17Speaker 5: Look like you.
- 9:18Speaker 4: Can glean whatever you want from the beginning of the season.
- 9:22Speaker 4: But I said it yesterday and I'll keep saying it.
- 9:25Speaker 4: This offense is gonna do fine. They're going to create runs.
- 9:29Speaker 4: Are they going to hit three hundred as a team.
- 9:31Speaker 5: No? Is there team batting average going to be where
- 9:34Speaker 5: fans want it to be. No? Are they going to
- 9:36Speaker 5: strike out too much?
- 9:37Speaker 2: Yes?
- 9:37Speaker 4: Are they going to go through slumps? Yes, this is
- 9:40Speaker 4: just a little blip in the radar. This is a
- 9:43Speaker 4: good lineup. I don't think Trent Grisham is going to
- 9:45Speaker 4: have a year he had last year. That's just me
- 9:48Speaker 4: picking one guy out of the lineup. I think he's
- 9:52Speaker 4: going to be able to hit homers. I think if
- 9:54Speaker 4: they keep him at eight, I think there's a lot
- 9:56Speaker 4: of value with him hitting in front of judge. So
- 10:01Speaker 4: they moved him down there. He needs to get a
- 10:03Speaker 4: few hits and then they can rightfully so move him
- 10:06Speaker 4: up or a right left combination, whoever's on the mound.
- 10:09Speaker 5: Blah blah blah.
- 10:10Speaker 4: All that to say, this is great for the Yankees
- 10:12Speaker 4: because they're going to hit. Their pitching is holding not
- 10:17Speaker 4: just holding their own. They're pitching starting rotation is dominating.
- 10:20Speaker 4: The bullpen not so much, but their starting rotation is
- 10:24Speaker 4: dominating when they're losing two of their top three guys.
- 10:30Speaker 5: In the rotation.
- 10:31Speaker 4: And I know Cam Schlitler would say I should be
- 10:33Speaker 4: one of the top three guys. But with those two
- 10:36Speaker 4: guys out, Rodin and Cole out, you just hope you're
- 10:40Speaker 4: staying around.
- 10:40Speaker 5: Like Todd said, so.
- 10:42Speaker 4: To me, I think this is a good situation because
- 10:45Speaker 4: that means the pitching is going to come a little
- 10:47Speaker 4: bit back down to earth and the hitting is going
- 10:50Speaker 4: to start carrying more of the load. But now you're
- 10:53Speaker 4: getting in, like a lot of the American League East teams,
- 10:55Speaker 4: you're starting to get into inner division play here, and
- 10:59Speaker 4: this is when it comes a grind. This is when
- 11:02Speaker 4: it becomes you got to put better at bats together,
- 11:04Speaker 4: make adjustments that I think sometimes you don't see the
- 11:08Speaker 4: Yankees do necessarily. And I love the fact that everybody's
- 11:12Speaker 4: freaking out about how guys batting averages are where they
- 11:16Speaker 4: are through forty at bats. I can go through like
- 11:19Speaker 4: four or five times in my career where I had
- 11:21Speaker 4: forty at bats and they were like, you're not hitting
- 11:24Speaker 4: good enough. I know it's a small sample size, but
- 11:27Speaker 4: see so I love anytime that you guys can say, wow, Eric,
- 11:31Speaker 4: it's okay, you could have gotten more.
- 11:33Speaker 5: Of a chance.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Fine, then I'll do it. On the other end. Chandler
- 11:38Speaker 1: Simpsons hitting three ninety one.
- 11:41Speaker 2: You know the Rays, it can flock.
- 11:43Speaker 1: They look okay, but I think they could give the
- 11:45Speaker 1: Yanks a lot of trouble this weekend done in their
- 11:49Speaker 1: home park. Yondi Diaz and Jonathan Rondolph to nice starts,
- 11:52Speaker 1: but yeah, Chandler Simpson's been the story. They We's got
- 11:55Speaker 1: eighteen hits in twelve games, and I feel like the
- 11:57Speaker 1: industry wants him to succeed too, because he's not a
- 12:00Speaker 1: power guy. He's not a V louy exitvlow guy. But
- 12:04Speaker 1: you're like, if he can get on base enough, this
- 12:06Speaker 1: is the Billy Hamilton story from years back.
- 12:08Speaker 2: You played with Billy Bills.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, remember it's like, hey, Billy gets on base,
- 12:13Speaker 1: this is trouble, trouble, and that's what Chandler Simpson is.
- 12:17Speaker 3: And he'll get on base, not even squaring the ball up,
- 12:20Speaker 3: and I think that's the thing. He puts it in
- 12:21Speaker 3: the right spot on the infield, he's going to beat
- 12:25Speaker 3: that ball out. He's going to hit a blooper and
- 12:26Speaker 3: he's going to be on second base. And then if
- 12:29Speaker 3: he gets on on a walk, watch out, it might
- 12:31Speaker 3: be basically a triple when he's steals, So he's actually
- 12:35Speaker 3: a runner. Billy Hamilton was fast, was quick, all that above.
- 12:39Speaker 3: He never even did track in high school so that
- 12:41Speaker 3: he had to kind of learn how to steal bases.
- 12:44Speaker 3: But once he got going, he would definitely get there.
- 12:47Speaker 3: But you know, this guy Simpson is incredible. He's very good.
- 12:51Speaker 3: He's going to give Yankees a tough time. And unless
- 12:53Speaker 3: he doesn't put the ball in play yep.
- 12:55Speaker 1: And also one more in this series, Luis, he'll making
- 12:58Speaker 1: his debut perfect for the Yanks.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Yeah, he's in Tampa, right, Yeah, you know what I mean.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Right, that's an easy one. Yeah, But pitching hasn't been
- 13:06Speaker 1: the problem, especially starting pitching. Let's move on to the
- 13:09Speaker 1: Astros and the Mariners. That's the big heavyweight tilt out
- 13:12Speaker 1: in the American League West. What do you have for
- 13:14Speaker 1: us on this one? Kratz both teams kind of reeling
- 13:18Speaker 1: right now. Again, we're gonna I'm not gonna say it anymore.
- 13:21Speaker 1: I'm gonna say it one more time and then I'm
- 13:22Speaker 1: gonna stop. It's early, but the Astros are coming off
- 13:26Speaker 1: being swept by the Rockies. The Mariners are what four
- 13:29Speaker 1: nine right now to start the year. This is a
- 13:32Speaker 1: chance for either of them to build up a little momentum.
- 13:35Speaker 4: Worst record in baseball for the Mariners. Here's where I
- 13:38Speaker 4: see it. Here's where I see it is two completely
- 13:41Speaker 4: different stories. The Mariners are healthy and doing this. The
- 13:46Speaker 4: Astros have lost some dudes that were key parts of
- 13:49Speaker 4: their organization. I mean, it's parts of their starting lineup.
- 13:54Speaker 4: With the fact that Christian Javier just went out, Jake
- 13:56Speaker 4: Myers just went out. So they're both coming in struggling. Yes,
- 14:03Speaker 4: but the Mariners get to put their lineup back out there.
- 14:06Speaker 4: JP Crawford didn't start the season healthy. Now he's in
- 14:10Speaker 4: the lineup, like they're able to sit out there and go, Okay,
- 14:13Speaker 4: either our lineup sucks and we're gonna hit one. What
- 14:16Speaker 4: does it say right there, one eighty four the whole year,
- 14:19Speaker 4: or the ball's gonna start rolling here. The Astros they've
- 14:24Speaker 4: been killing it and they just got killed by, in
- 14:27Speaker 4: my opinion, one of the worst, the worst team in
- 14:31Speaker 4: baseball in the Rockies. But you can that can happen.
- 14:35Speaker 4: You can get swept by teams that like that totally happens.
- 14:39Speaker 4: The issue for the Astros is they lost two key
- 14:42Speaker 4: pieces to their team. Did they lose their superstars? No,
- 14:45Speaker 4: Jordan Alvarez is still gonna hit whatever three point fifteen
- 14:49Speaker 4: with forty and one hundred when he stays on the field. Uh,
- 14:54Speaker 4: Jeremy Paanea has been dealing with stuff all year. Is
- 14:58Speaker 4: Carlos Korea one hundred percent healthy? Josel Tuove started out
- 15:01Speaker 4: really hot here, so you're getting the most out of
- 15:03Speaker 4: two of your best hitters. But when you lose Jake
- 15:07Speaker 4: Myers roam in the outfield, who's gonna fill in? Cam
- 15:10Speaker 4: Smith is a younger player. It's not like they have
- 15:13Speaker 4: all the depth that they need, but Jake Myers was
- 15:17Speaker 4: giving them a lot out there, and it's just like,
- 15:22Speaker 4: how do we okay, this is the time when we
- 15:24Speaker 4: need our ace to come around, and this is the
- 15:25Speaker 4: biggest injury. This is we need our guy, our number
- 15:28Speaker 4: one guy to come around and give us that first
- 15:30Speaker 4: victory in Seattle are in the Mariners series.
- 15:34Speaker 5: Hunter Brown's not there, so.
- 15:36Speaker 4: All the other injuries, hunter Brown not being there, that
- 15:39Speaker 4: is a huge loss for this team. And that's why
- 15:41Speaker 4: I feel like they're both struggling. But I feel like
- 15:44Speaker 4: the Mariners have a chance to pull out of this
- 15:47Speaker 4: more than the Astros.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Then let me bring you into one other Als team
- 15:53Speaker 1: while we're at it. We'll finish our preview with the
- 15:57Speaker 1: Rangers and the Dodgers. Todd Father Rangers swept by the Reds,
- 16:01Speaker 1: then they just swept the Mariners. A lot of the
- 16:04Speaker 1: scores are seeing in these games pretty low. It seems
- 16:08Speaker 1: to be a similar story with Texas since they won
- 16:11Speaker 1: the World Series. Is there enough punch in this lineup
- 16:14Speaker 1: to be a consistent threat? There's some really good arms.
- 16:18Speaker 1: They added Mackenzie Gore. He looked really good in his
- 16:20Speaker 1: last start, and now they have the Corey Seeger Bowl
- 16:22Speaker 1: out in LA against the Dodgers.
- 16:25Speaker 2: I do and I don't.
- 16:26Speaker 3: I feel like they've kind of just fizzled a little bit,
- 16:29Speaker 3: you know, with every little thing.
- 16:31Speaker 2: You know.
- 16:31Speaker 3: I know they've picked up Brandon Nemo. He's doing fantastic.
- 16:34Speaker 3: We knew he was gonna be you know, a two
- 16:36Speaker 3: eighty plus hitter. You know you think about you know,
- 16:40Speaker 3: the gram lighter. Well, i mean, where where is this
- 16:45Speaker 3: to me? Where is the offense gonna come from? And
- 16:47Speaker 3: I'm not seeing it, honestly, But I do see, you know,
- 16:51Speaker 3: at the end of the day, like them making a push,
- 16:54Speaker 3: but ultimately it's just not there right now. It's just
- 16:57Speaker 3: not there. So if I'm a Texas Ranger fan, I'm very,
- 17:00Speaker 3: very worried. I'm trying to understand, you know, with the
- 17:02Speaker 3: off season moves that they got and the acquisitions, like,
- 17:05Speaker 3: where's this going to come from? I know they play
- 17:06Speaker 3: in a big ballpark. I've played there. I was there
- 17:08Speaker 3: the first time they've had it, But that should be
- 17:10Speaker 3: actually helpful to hitters to hit more gaps, more doubles,
- 17:13Speaker 3: more triples.
- 17:13Speaker 2: And I'm just not I'm not seeing it right now.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Yeah, a lot of guys have struggled with that park.
- 17:18Speaker 1: And you look at the names on paper, You're like, Okay, Nimo,
- 17:20Speaker 1: like you mentioned great addition, why at Langford should keep
- 17:23Speaker 1: getting better? I don't you know, he definitely hasn't progressed
- 17:26Speaker 1: into a star. Nope, by any means. Corey Seeger Is Corey, Seeger.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Jake Berger's off to a nice start this year. There's
- 17:32Speaker 1: concern really after that, Josh Peterson, Evan Carter, etcetera. So
- 17:36Speaker 1: we'll see what that looks like. Dodgers are obviously feeling themselves.
- 17:39Speaker 1: They're off to a nice start. They just went up
- 17:41Speaker 1: to Toronto and basically celebrated their World Series victory again
- 17:46Speaker 1: with a series win. They did drop the last one,
- 17:48Speaker 1: but things are pretty right now for the Dodgers, aside
- 17:51Speaker 1: from no Mookie Bets, there's a lot to like for
- 17:54Speaker 1: Dodger fans, and we've been talking about them a ton.
- 17:56Speaker 1: We'll do a lot more previewing throughout the rest of
- 17:59Speaker 1: the show, but a shout out to Game Changer, the
- 18:01Speaker 1: number one youth sports app coach Smarter connect Livey played
- 18:04Speaker 1: the action and Todd Father goes to GC dot com.
- 18:07Speaker 2: You just say your lineup.
- 18:09Speaker 3: I'm trying to I'm in between one or two guys,
- 18:12Speaker 3: but it's very simple, it's very easy. I think it's
- 18:15Speaker 3: the best one out there, to be honest. There's a
- 18:16Speaker 3: couple others, but this one right here. It gives you
- 18:19Speaker 3: perfect stats about everything, like it gets in depth. If
- 18:23Speaker 3: you really wanted to. Like, you know, you got people asking, hey,
- 18:26Speaker 3: how's my son doing here? And there boom, I go
- 18:28Speaker 3: right on, I check the stats, I let them know
- 18:30Speaker 3: and it's it's simple. The messaging part is my favorite part.
- 18:34Speaker 3: I put a message out there and pe oh I
- 18:35Speaker 3: didn't see it. Well, I told you, look at my
- 18:38Speaker 3: game changer app. That's our biggest thing. And then they
- 18:40Speaker 3: eventually do. So, Yes, very good, use it for all.
- 18:43Speaker 3: I even have some of the tools and video stuff
- 18:46Speaker 3: I put on the back of the fence so we
- 18:47Speaker 3: can watch great videos and you can scroll back and
- 18:50Speaker 3: see awesome videos that they have too. And it's a
- 18:53Speaker 3: good keepsake for kids, you know, eventually get their first
- 18:55Speaker 3: home run.
- 18:56Speaker 5: Yeah, second base play Johnny at second base?
- 19:00Speaker 3: Johnny is a first basement. Actually, good call, you were close.
- 19:04Speaker 3: That's your second challenge.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Mess there you go.
- 19:07Speaker 1: GC dot com. Did you know that with the MLB
- 19:11Speaker 1: No Sweat home run token, you do not have to
- 19:13Speaker 1: worry if your bet didn't clear the fences. You can
- 19:15Speaker 1: activate that token when you bet on any player to
- 19:17Speaker 1: hit a homer in any MLB game. If that player
- 19:20Speaker 1: fails to go yard, you get your stake back in
- 19:22Speaker 1: bonus bets.
- 19:23Speaker 5: Yeah, that's what he said.
- 19:24Speaker 2: That's what he said.
- 19:26Speaker 5: That's what he said.
- 19:28Speaker 7: That's what he said.
- 19:32Speaker 1: We're going to start with JD Martinez. So JD is
- 19:36Speaker 1: done playing and now he's going to work for the Mets.
- 19:39Speaker 1: And he was a guy who made a major impact
- 19:43Speaker 1: in our sport beyond his individual statistics. You would hear
- 19:47Speaker 1: it from many other players, and I think there is
- 19:51Speaker 1: reasoning for this that goes beyond him just being a
- 19:53Speaker 1: smart guy. He eventually, now out of his playing days,
- 19:57Speaker 1: was able to share more about why he feels like
- 20:00Speaker 1: it is so much on him to be able to
- 20:03Speaker 1: share that knowledge and make people comfortable listening to him
- 20:07Speaker 1: and also talking back and forth with him. So I'll
- 20:09Speaker 1: let JD run point here. That's why we're doing That's
- 20:11Speaker 1: what he said, and then we'll add to the story here.
- 20:14Speaker 7: When I was at the Astros, I remember I was
- 20:17Speaker 7: in a bad spot. I was, you know, an up
- 20:21Speaker 7: and down guy, guy that barely played. I would reach
- 20:24Speaker 7: out to the vettering guys, and at that time it
- 20:26Speaker 7: was a little different. You know, the veteran guys were
- 20:29Speaker 7: they weren't very nice.
- 20:30Speaker 5: You would say that this SE's not nice.
- 20:33Speaker 7: It was a good term. But I remember seeing that
- 20:36Speaker 7: and asking questions and then kind of never answering it,
- 20:39Speaker 7: and they kind of blowing me off, and you know,
- 20:41Speaker 7: just making my life a nightmare. I remember saying, I
- 20:44Speaker 7: was like, you know what, if God ever blesses me
- 20:46Speaker 7: where I'm in that position, I'm never going to treat
- 20:48Speaker 7: a young guy like that, and I'll always answer any
- 20:51Speaker 7: questions and help them out any which way, because I
- 20:53Speaker 7: remember how helpless that feeling was, and you know, going
- 20:56Speaker 7: through that whole process. So you know, when things change
- 21:00Speaker 7: for me, and you know, I kind of grew as
- 21:02Speaker 7: a player and the same situation happened, I didn't I
- 21:06Speaker 7: lean towards the other's side.
- 21:07Speaker 1: One Chandler Rome tweeted from the Athletic and also, of
- 21:13Speaker 1: course crush shitty territory. Against my better judgment, I will
- 21:16Speaker 1: wade into this shady Martinez Astro's discourse. This is from
- 21:19Speaker 1: my last job, like his last beat reporter job in
- 21:22Speaker 1: the twenty twenty two ALCSA Yankee Stadium. He said, what
- 21:25Speaker 1: Martinez said is nothing new. This was a quote from
- 21:28Speaker 1: Lance mccullors junior. A few years ago. We didn't have
- 21:32Speaker 1: the greatest culture in twenty sixteen, we got guys like
- 21:34Speaker 1: Brian McCann, Carlos Beltron. They came in and they let
- 21:37Speaker 1: us know we're here to win, We're here to create
- 21:39Speaker 1: a family in this clubhouse. It's not about hazing guys.
- 21:41Speaker 1: It's not about giving guys a hard time or making
- 21:43Speaker 1: guys are in their stripes. If you're wearing this uniform,
- 21:45Speaker 1: you're one of us. If you've been here one day,
- 21:47Speaker 1: been here twenty years, We're going to laugh, be happy, smile,
- 21:50Speaker 1: and we're going to show up every day ready to play.
- 21:51Speaker 1: And I think we need to have that mindset that
- 21:53Speaker 1: makes everyone equals. It doesn't matter how much money you make.
- 21:56Speaker 1: And I think it's worked here.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Kratz. What are we need to know?
- 22:01Speaker 4: I was on the team in twenty sixteen at the
- 22:03Speaker 4: beginning of the season, and I see what Lance was saying.
- 22:07Speaker 5: There.
- 22:08Speaker 4: There was some guys and this is about how you
- 22:11Speaker 4: build a team. And I think they clearly made the
- 22:13Speaker 4: change going with McCann going, you know, bringing McCann in,
- 22:17Speaker 4: bringing in Carlos Beltron, guys that had histories of being
- 22:22Speaker 4: the exact opposite of what JD. Martinez was talking about.
- 22:25Speaker 4: He experienced with the veteran guys but you also have
- 22:28Speaker 4: to go back to what JD Martinez experienced in twenty eleven.
- 22:34Speaker 4: This was a brutes mcgoots team. This was Jose Altuve
- 22:38Speaker 4: and Hunter Pence who ended up getting traded at the
- 22:43Speaker 4: end of that year to the Phillies at the trade deadline.
- 22:45Speaker 4: But then you're talking about the veteran guys that were
- 22:48Speaker 4: on that team. I mean, you had Olmberto Quintero, you
- 22:52Speaker 4: had a guy like Jason Michaels, you had a guy
- 22:56Speaker 4: like Carlos Lee. I don't know, I'm just naming off
- 22:59Speaker 4: the veterans that were on that team. And if you
- 23:03Speaker 4: don't make a guy who JD Martinez was kind of
- 23:07Speaker 4: a touted prospect and then had to figure some things out,
- 23:11Speaker 4: revamped his swing and then became.
- 23:13Speaker 5: The superstar that he was.
- 23:15Speaker 4: So if you have a tauted's prospect, if you have
- 23:18Speaker 4: young guys coming into your organization and you have veterans
- 23:22Speaker 4: that don't make it very nice for the young guys
- 23:26Speaker 4: to come in. I'm not saying you don't give them
- 23:28Speaker 4: a hard time. I'm saying you don't make them feel
- 23:32Speaker 4: like they're part.
- 23:32Speaker 5: Of the team. They're not going to succeed.
- 23:35Speaker 4: Now, people would say, well Al Tuove succeeded, or Carlos
- 23:39Speaker 4: Correa succeeded, or Lance mccullors succeeded. But I saw some
- 23:43Speaker 4: of the things that Lance mccullors went through. I wasn't
- 23:46Speaker 4: there when JD. Martinez went through what he went through,
- 23:50Speaker 4: Like they called Lance mccullor's wagu because he was in
- 23:53Speaker 4: the training room getting a massage at twenty or twenty
- 23:57Speaker 4: one years old. We mentioned it when he came on
- 23:59Speaker 4: the show. So there's ribbing that goes on. But then
- 24:03Speaker 4: it's also like, at what point do you make sure
- 24:06Speaker 4: that this dude is ready to go out on the
- 24:09Speaker 4: field and win every single day for your team. I
- 24:12Speaker 4: think that's some things that when I first got called
- 24:15Speaker 4: up in twenty ten eleven that time period, some guys
- 24:19Speaker 4: were like, well, I have to make sure I treat
- 24:22Speaker 4: this rookie the same way I was treated.
- 24:25Speaker 5: And my question was always did you like how you
- 24:28Speaker 5: were treated?
- 24:29Speaker 2: Oh?
- 24:29Speaker 4: No, I hated it. Why would you do that to
- 24:33Speaker 4: somebody else? Then that seems just an asinine thing to do.
- 24:37Speaker 5: I would get on dudes.
- 24:39Speaker 4: I would get on dudes for the betterment of their career,
- 24:41Speaker 4: and maybe some of the guys didn't see it that way,
- 24:44Speaker 4: but I would get on guys so that in the
- 24:47Speaker 4: moment when you have a big spot in a game
- 24:50Speaker 4: late in a season, when you're trying to make a
- 24:51Speaker 4: playoff push, you've already been through the fire of people
- 24:55Speaker 4: getting on you for this and that, and like, now
- 24:58Speaker 4: you're on the team and you are part of it.
- 25:01Speaker 4: But if it's ever affecting the way somebody plays, you've
- 25:04Speaker 4: totally crossed the line.
- 25:06Speaker 5: Like three steps ago.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Krats, I want to spin it forward. You explained the
- 25:12Speaker 1: twenty sixteen astros and why it fueled JD. Martinez to
- 25:18Speaker 1: not just become who he was, it actually fueled him
- 25:21Speaker 1: to become the teammate that he was and now the
- 25:25Speaker 1: team official or whatever you want to call his job
- 25:28Speaker 1: with the Mets, and why it's so important to him.
- 25:31Speaker 1: He wants people to be mentors, he wants people to listen,
- 25:34Speaker 1: and the game has changed a lot. I feel like
- 25:36Speaker 1: you hear these stories less these stories were the norm fifteen.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Plus years ago.
- 25:43Speaker 1: I'll let you describe all of this and then kick
- 25:45Speaker 1: it to Todd father to see if anybody was given
- 25:48Speaker 1: him the heisman when he tried to get advice.
- 25:52Speaker 5: I mean, so.
- 25:54Speaker 4: It's not exact specific to JD. Martinez. My story was
- 26:00Speaker 4: my buddy was drafted fourth overall. I think made it
- 26:04Speaker 4: up to the big leagues pretty quick, like big time
- 26:07Speaker 4: prospect coming out of high school, coming out of college,
- 26:09Speaker 4: and then he makes it to the big leagues. And
- 26:12Speaker 4: he told me in his rookie year and he didn't
- 26:14Speaker 4: have a very good big league career. Injuries, yes, but
- 26:19Speaker 4: he said he despised going to the ballpark. He couldn't
- 26:24Speaker 4: wait until the game started because he would get to
- 26:27Speaker 4: the ballpark and veteran relievers. I'll never forget the guy's
- 26:31Speaker 4: names were all over him. And this guy was not
- 26:34Speaker 4: a guy who Alec was just talking about. He's alluding to,
- 26:37Speaker 4: like some guy say some things and.
- 26:38Speaker 5: You're like, bro, are you serious?
- 26:40Speaker 2: Come on?
- 26:41Speaker 5: But this was not the case with my buddy.
- 26:44Speaker 4: And I won't say his name because you could pick
- 26:46Speaker 4: out the veterans who made his life a living hell.
- 26:50Speaker 4: And he was like, the three hours that the game
- 26:52Speaker 4: took were great because we were on the field, but
- 26:55Speaker 4: he said around that it was just wearing them out
- 26:59Speaker 4: and essentially warm out. And he wasn't making excuses for
- 27:02Speaker 4: how he did in the big leagues. He was just
- 27:04Speaker 4: saying it was something that was completely unnecessary and there's
- 27:10Speaker 4: different ways to handle it. And I think certain guys
- 27:13Speaker 4: back in the day felt like that was the way
- 27:15Speaker 4: you had to handle it because that was how they
- 27:18Speaker 4: were treated. And like I said before, if you're treated
- 27:21Speaker 4: poorly and you don't like it, why on earth would
- 27:24Speaker 4: you do it to somebody else? Like that is so sophomoric,
- 27:29Speaker 4: it's so it's so just immature in any walk of life,
- 27:33Speaker 4: not just baseball.
- 27:36Speaker 3: Yeah, and I mean along those lines, I came up
- 27:39Speaker 3: with a really good organization with the Reds there. You know,
- 27:42Speaker 3: my mentor right away was Johnny Goms and he could
- 27:45Speaker 3: he could have made my life a living hell too,
- 27:47Speaker 3: but he didn't.
- 27:48Speaker 2: He was fantastic.
- 27:50Speaker 3: I had some interistans during some things, but you know,
- 27:55Speaker 3: I was I was around it even at a younger age.
- 27:57Speaker 3: You know, when you were a freshman. I was a
- 27:59Speaker 3: freshman playing you know, varsity baseball. You had some guys
- 28:02Speaker 3: go get the water, go do this. That's just part
- 28:04Speaker 3: of the whole, you know, growing up and that kind
- 28:08Speaker 3: of stuff. But there was never anything where I felt like,
- 28:11Speaker 3: you know, man, I don't this guy was a jerk.
- 28:14Speaker 3: You know, it was part of the whole situation. It
- 28:16Speaker 3: was part of how Kratzy and I were brought up.
- 28:19Speaker 3: I mean, look at you, Kratzy, You're an absolute moose, Like,
- 28:22Speaker 3: who's gonna mess with you?
- 28:23Speaker 2: So that kind of stuff.
- 28:25Speaker 3: I'm sure you had some sort of stuff going on,
- 28:27Speaker 3: but you know, it depends on who the person was,
- 28:29Speaker 3: if you had a personality this or that. But for me,
- 28:33Speaker 3: Scott Rowland was awesome. You know, Brandon, Philip Vado, all
- 28:35Speaker 3: those guys, you know, Skip Schumacher's they were fantastic. And
- 28:40Speaker 3: I wanted to pass that along to everybody else too
- 28:43Speaker 3: as well, and make sure when they came up, take
- 28:45Speaker 3: them out to dinner, get them a suit, whatever it was,
- 28:48Speaker 3: make sure they were part of the team and felt comfortable.
- 28:51Speaker 2: Because I wanted to win.
- 28:52Speaker 3: I wanted the guys to be as much comfortable as possible,
- 28:54Speaker 3: knowing that they had nothing else to worry about but
- 28:57Speaker 3: the game itself. So yeah, stinks to hear something like that,
- 29:02Speaker 3: but that's how it was for a lot of teams
- 29:04Speaker 3: coming up. You're the young buck, carry the bag, give
- 29:06Speaker 3: me a drink, do all this kind of stuff. So yeah, well,
- 29:11Speaker 3: now it's a different ballgame. Not that many veteran players,
- 29:14Speaker 3: so it's a totally different game.
- 29:16Speaker 4: But Todd, there's you can explain the difference between bro Todd.
- 29:21Speaker 4: Make sure I always have coffee when I get here
- 29:24Speaker 4: to the park, Like you better beat me to the park.
- 29:27Speaker 4: There's times when guys, when guys now, they call their
- 29:30Speaker 4: agent and they'll be like he told me, I had
- 29:34Speaker 4: to get to the park before them, Like I like
- 29:38Speaker 4: to watch my shows at one point thirty. And that's
- 29:40Speaker 4: something that like I never for me, I never felt
- 29:45Speaker 4: comfortable sitting on the couches in the big leagues. I
- 29:48Speaker 4: know that sounds stupid. I know that sounds ridiculous. I
- 29:52Speaker 4: would sit when we had team meetings. I would sit
- 29:54Speaker 4: on the arm rest of the couch because there was
- 29:56Speaker 4: always somebody that was a better player than me. There
- 29:58Speaker 4: was always somebody that had more service time than me.
- 30:01Speaker 4: But that was like something that I learned early. And
- 30:05Speaker 4: so when I would see rookies that there was guys
- 30:07Speaker 4: that would come up to big lead to the big
- 30:10Speaker 4: league camp game and sitting in a minor league spring
- 30:13Speaker 4: or sitting in the big league spring training clubhouse, and
- 30:16Speaker 4: they got.
- 30:17Speaker 5: Their like feed up. They got there.
- 30:19Speaker 4: You know they're leaning back on the couch. I would
- 30:21Speaker 4: go into the lunch room and I would make them
- 30:23Speaker 4: a peanut butter and jelly, all three of the guys,
- 30:25Speaker 4: and I'd be like, here, guys, is there anything else
- 30:27Speaker 4: that you guys need?
- 30:28Speaker 5: They'd be like what?
- 30:29Speaker 2: Like what?
- 30:30Speaker 4: And so if nobody tells them, then you're never understanding
- 30:35Speaker 4: that to be in the big leagues is a privilege
- 30:38Speaker 4: to be have an opportunity to put a big lead
- 30:41Speaker 4: uniform on, whether it's in big league camp or it's
- 30:44Speaker 4: in Game seven of the World Series. You got to
- 30:46Speaker 4: respect people that have done it before, and you got
- 30:49Speaker 4: to be like, Wow, I'm part of a team that's
- 30:51Speaker 4: something bigger than me, and I think those little things
- 30:55Speaker 4: help grow that and help grow the team camaraderie through
- 30:58Speaker 4: all things.
- 31:00Speaker 2: YEP.
- 31:01Speaker 3: I tell everybody before I came out, I wish there
- 31:03Speaker 3: was like a book, a manual in a show, like hey,
- 31:05Speaker 3: how to dress, how to tip?
- 31:07Speaker 2: Uh? What to do in these situations? There is? I think,
- 31:10Speaker 2: what's that the Cardinal way?
- 31:12Speaker 5: But no guys always talk about.
- 31:13Speaker 2: It, you know what I mean?
- 31:16Speaker 3: Simple things of how to act and be professional and
- 31:20Speaker 3: what to do and.
- 31:22Speaker 2: All these types of things.
- 31:23Speaker 3: What to do in a hotel, how to act, where
- 31:25Speaker 3: to eat, if somebody's doing this, you need to be here,
- 31:28Speaker 3: uh tipping, you know the lady that cleans your room
- 31:32Speaker 3: in the hotel, stuff like that, And I'm sure, yeah,
- 31:35Speaker 3: go ahead.
- 31:36Speaker 4: No, no, that's that's what But that's what veterans do.
- 31:39Speaker 4: So it's like, if there's a book, then teams would
- 31:41Speaker 4: be like, we don't need veterans, just like you and
- 31:44Speaker 4: I both think you need veterans in the clubhouse. Like
- 31:48Speaker 4: another story, Brett Gardner and I would Now Brett Gardner's
- 31:52Speaker 4: you know, a fringe Hall of Fame player, All Star silver,
- 31:55Speaker 4: all that stuff, and I'm just a you know, barely
- 31:58Speaker 4: in the big leagues kind of guy. But we would
- 32:00Speaker 4: get on the rookies in big league camp in spring
- 32:04Speaker 4: training to the point where he would do some pranks
- 32:08Speaker 4: that people were like, oh, how could he treat me
- 32:11Speaker 4: like that? How could he put mustard in my smoothie
- 32:15Speaker 4: that the strength coach made me? And it wasn't about
- 32:19Speaker 4: ruining your smoothie. It was about the fact that you
- 32:22Speaker 4: have zero to one year of service in the big
- 32:25Speaker 4: leagues and you're going to somebody else to make have
- 32:28Speaker 4: them make your smoothie.
- 32:30Speaker 5: Like, go earn it, go earn it.
- 32:32Speaker 4: Not that you have to be in the big leagues
- 32:34Speaker 4: to get a smoothie, just the fact that you need
- 32:37Speaker 4: to let you need to make sure you're doing these
- 32:39Speaker 4: things on your own and taking ownership of your career
- 32:42Speaker 4: and not being like, oh, great, I'm in the big leagues.
- 32:46Speaker 5: Here, everybody massaged me. Here, somebody put my uniform on.
- 32:50Speaker 4: No, it's like it's I don't want to say it's
- 32:53Speaker 4: hardening players, but it's definitely something that it's fun because
- 32:57Speaker 4: then it's like, oh crap, yeah, maybe I shouldn't have
- 33:00Speaker 4: just put my feet up on somebody else's locker room
- 33:03Speaker 4: chair or asked for a smoothie and then like not
- 33:07Speaker 4: said thank you. Like it's all that stuff that's fun
- 33:10Speaker 4: part of being in a clubhouse.
