- 1:40[SPEAKER_02]: Today, you're going to be talking with actress Olivia Allen Lynn.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_02]: She's been in front of the camera longer than most people have even had driver's license, whether you first saw her as Faith Newman on the young and the restless Dolly Parton in the coat of mini colors.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_02]: She played the younger version, of course.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_02]: The Blood Slick Lexi on Chucky and the Spider-Wit Chronicles, which he's been doing most recently.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_02]: Chances are, she's already been a part of your watch list, whether you realized it or not.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_02]: She was raised in a showbiz family, but she's got those instincts that really feel like her own.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_02]: She can cry on cue, she can kill with a punchline, she can make a sociopathic teenager seem weirdly relatable.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_02]: And today we're sort of getting all of that all at once with the new Netflix series called Wayward.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_02]: Alley plays a teen trapped in a so-called therapeutic school with cult vibes, a whole lot of Barry Trauma.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_02]: She's gonna dig into the psychological layers of the show the early 2000 setting and the killer soundtrack featuring bands like Third Eye Blind and Anping Floyd.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_02]: And what it was like collaborating with a creator co-star May Martin, she's also going to touch on her horror fandom, her love for Halloween, her scenes with a legendary Tony Colette, and how the cast went from crying on camera to shooting parody musicals at lunch, all that and more as we dig into a wayward on Netflix, it's Kyle and Meredith with Olivia Allen-Lend.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_03]: Hello?
- 3:08[SPEAKER_02]: Let me be, I'm sure one of many people congratulating you on wavered because man that I get pulled into that and haven't stopped thinking about it since I watched it.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_02]: I think I'm underselling it when I say this to you.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_02]: This is a really good series.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you so much.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_03]: I'm so proud of it and so excited for the world to see it.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_03]: And yeah, I just keep wanting to rewatch it over and over again.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_03]: I'm so excited.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_02]: I like that too, because I'll talk to some people, of course, are like, I haven't even seen the show that they spent all that time in or whatever.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_02]: Like you jump right back in.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I kind of imagine that.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you spend so many months working towards something and wanting the product to be as great as possible.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_03]: And so the second I was able to watch the episodes, I was like, okay, I'm walking on right now and watching a little summary now.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_03]: I'm so excited to see how this turned out.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_03]: And I wonder how this seemed turned out.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_03]: And that shot was weird.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_03]: I wonder how it looks like.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_03]: It's just, it's so much fun to be able to watch work that you're proud of.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_03]: And it's rare to be able to watch work that you're proud of.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_02]: now are you are you able to separate yourself if you can you get lost in the story or do you see everything that's happening beyond you know that that can be a parameter.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_03]: I I feel like I can get lost in it.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_03]: I feel like especially with wayward.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_03]: I feel like I've gotten lost to most in it out of any project I've ever done just because of how amazing the story is and also in wayward there's so many A and B and C storylines.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_03]: And so I find myself being so excited to watch the new episodes because I didn't know what was happening in the storylines that I wasn't in.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_03]: I've read them on the page, but it's just so much fun to be able to see them come to life on the storylines and the stuff that I didn't get to see.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_03]: So that was the most fun part of getting to watch the episode.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_03]: It's getting to see what everybody else was up to when we were filming away and tall pines.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_02]: You get that.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_02]: By the way, I bring this up too.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure that's you get the soundtrack because I don't know if you get peaks of that beforehand, but it's a great soundtrack in this.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_03]: Oh my gosh, I was so excited.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_03]: I was watching it And I just I every single song that came on I was just like, oh my gosh, this is this is my dream This is my dream.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_03]: It's so awesome.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, yeah, this the soundtrack is I just need to get a playlist of all of the music in the show and just make that my main playlist
- 5:28[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, because there's like there's moments a few moments, I guess, like when you're talking about pink Floyd or you're dancing to a third eye blind.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_02]: Was it like, are the like, like, is we hear about those things, right?
- 5:44[SPEAKER_02]: Like the song that we're hearing is not the song that the actors were hearing.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_02]: Like was that one of those moments where it was the real thing.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_03]: No, so in the cafeteria scene, third eye blind is playing.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, third eye blind is playing, and it was so much fun, just to be like, yeah, let's go, let's go.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_03]: And yeah, so in the third eye blind was playing four,
- 6:10[SPEAKER_03]: The Pink Floyd I think actually was playing also.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, the Pink Floyd.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so we had the Pink Floyd and the third I blind on the day Yeah, I mean, it just lil' as music taste is my favorite part of the character I'm such a big music person myself and so It really helped me get into her headspace
- 6:30[SPEAKER_03]: with just using aspect of it because she's such a, you know, it just helps with the grunginess and the very punk rock feeling.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_03]: So, yeah, I mean, that I mean, third I blind and all of those bands or some of my favorites in real life anyway.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_03]: So it was just like, wow, Lila is so cool.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_02]: When you get to feel that way about a character, like, that they're exactly.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I want to be as cool as Lila.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_02]: But of course, you know, here you are, I mean, it's got you playing in 2003, I mean, a lot of these songs, of course, you know, um, uh, not counting Pink Floyd or something like that, but a lot of these songs are are kind of period accurate and I don't like I don't know how much how much does that add when we talk about time period to the role itself.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_03]: I feel like the most in ads, just like the feeling, I mean, first of all, I think the biggest thing that you notice is the no cell phones.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_03]: It really adds so much in a way that I didn't really think that it would to the story, like watching them on their flip phones, just makes you feel something.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_03]: And it was also such a...
- 7:41[SPEAKER_03]: a invigorating feeling to not always have like a cell phone in my pocket and be like like that like it was like I had to learn how to like do the flip phone like make it look natural like flip it out and do all that stuff and it just it really surprisingly having no cell phones really sets you in that time period and also the outfits and the clothing
- 8:01[SPEAKER_03]: I'm a huge low-rise gene lover, and so wearing all of Lila's outfits that had the low-rise genes and that very grungy girl, you know, long tank tops, two tank tops, three tank tops, the clothing and the no cell phones, and a lot of the, like the props and art direction and, you know,
- 8:21[SPEAKER_03]: They really looked for every single possible thing to sneak in there to really make you feel like you're in the 2000s Which is my like favorite time period.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_02]: So it was so much fun to play and we'll be right back right after this Welcome back.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_02]: It's Kyle Meredith with Olivia Allen.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_02]: I love that that we're talking about this like this is just a fun care free show You know for the first few minutes It is right it's just fun and care free nothing ever bad happens to them
- 8:50[SPEAKER_02]: Like, what do we call this?
- 8:51[SPEAKER_02]: Like, psychological thriller, I guess.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_03]: Definitely.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_02]: And you've played around in these genres before.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, you've gotten full on a horror, I guess.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_02]: When we talk about something like Chuck E. or something like that, I don't know.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_02]: Like, do you find, like, I think I was watching an interview with something.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_02]: And you and I both share a big,
- 9:10[SPEAKER_02]: We're, we're big fans of Halloween.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_02]: It's my favorite time of year.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_02]: We're in Halloween season right now.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_02]: But it's like, do you find yourself like, that's why you go for these roles?
- 9:18[SPEAKER_02]: Does that have anything to do with it?
- 9:19[SPEAKER_02]: Not Halloween specifically, but just like the genre.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_03]: I've just been so lucky.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_03]: I've been so lucky to be able to play so many roles that are in my favorite genre.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_03]: It just kind of happens that way.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_03]: And maybe I'm just more enthusiastic on those tapes that I send in because I just want to do this genre so much.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_03]: But I mean, just being on shocky was so much fun because it is so in your face horror, horror.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_03]: And just all of the blood in the gore
- 9:51[SPEAKER_03]: deaths and everything was just so my alley because I get like like it's my favorite time of the year It's I live for it.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_03]: I went to Horanite's last night.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like already in it.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_03]: It's only September 5th So I'm like I'm already diving in Yeah, so I mean, I think that I've just been super lucky to get to play in the genre as that I love that I love to watch One of the biggest things when I read the first episode of the way we're in as I was like okay if I don't look this
- 10:18[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to be binging this so hard because this looks so cool and the fact that I get to Being it is just an honor.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you May.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you so much because I'm so excited.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_03]: I'm so excited for the rest of the world to hopefully feel the same way about that I do and the passion behind the what went into making the project
- 10:38[SPEAKER_02]: because that's it, you know, we've got, we've got colty feelings.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_02]: We've got crazy adults, we're checking on, I mean, we've, you know, I think I was trying to think of like, because there's so many like little themes, right, that you can pick out, but something about intergenerational trauma feels like that's what maybe the show is really getting to.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if you have the same feeling.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, no, definitely.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I think that the writing is so complex and there's in there's so many different levels and dinner just in it, man, my gosh, I cannot talk this morning.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_03]: Enter generational trauma is definitely the best phrase, that's it.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, thank you, is definitely one of the biggest themes throughout the show, one of the most prevalent.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_03]: And I think that with with May's writing and with the rest of our incredible writers room and writing team they didn't incredible job at making every single character so complex and have such a backstory and everybody has their own trauma.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_03]: In a way like every character at Tall Pines has their own thing that's happened in the past and that's why they're here and their own story of what brought them here and they're all disturbing in their own way and with
- 12:00[SPEAKER_03]: in real life, everybody has their own forms of trauma too.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, like, everybody has their one thing that just really, really mess them up at some point in their life.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_03]: And so, I think it's really awesome to go into a show and see the levels of it.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, what it does to a person and what levels of trauma, what that person has become to it in this day, into this day.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_03]: And so, yeah, it's so, there's so many different levels, there's so many different storylines to follow.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_03]: Um, I think that's just all due to amazing crabble writing.
- 12:30[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I'll echo that, but you know, it was made course we're talking me Martin here that
- 12:36[SPEAKER_02]: You know, it'd be very easy to lose the plot when you do, as you say, have that many storylines and characters and that everybody does have their own backstory and it never gets lost in this.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_02]: I never felt like it was too wide scope.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_02]: And you've got May Martin, who not only is on the screen for, you know, a lion share portion of this whole series here and created it and is writing it.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_02]: Was the vision?
- 13:08[SPEAKER_02]: Like do you talk about it like really?
- 13:10[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I mean, there was so many conversations even before we got to set.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_03]: Just about exactly every single moment that's made to this point of writing this show and their own friends experience in one of these troubled teen schools and why they wrote the show and the whole backstory
- 13:36[SPEAKER_03]: At the beginning, it was like literally anything you were Sydney who was atty Need at any point text me anytime whatever question you have there's no stupid question If you want to know if you want to talk about your characters birthday and their zodiac sign Like I'm in like I want to
- 13:53[SPEAKER_03]: do as much as I can to create these characters with you guys, and that was so helpful because you are jumping into these characters who have such an intense backstory, and so to have somebody there who knows a story better than anybody else to guide us, and
- 14:11[SPEAKER_03]: give their opinions of what they think the character's backstory and lives were like before the page starts was so, so helpful.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_03]: So, yeah, there were so many conversations.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know how me isn't so sick of me at this point because the second you tell me that I'm allowed to ask questions, I'm like, okay, how does she walk?
- 14:31[SPEAKER_03]: How does she talk?
- 14:32[SPEAKER_03]: How does she say this?
- 14:33[SPEAKER_03]: What's it?
- 14:33[SPEAKER_03]: What do you have a Toronto accent?
- 14:34[SPEAKER_03]: What is going on?
- 14:36[SPEAKER_03]: All the things, see, I was really
- 14:40[SPEAKER_02]: And we'll be right back right after this.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome back.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_02]: It's Kyle Meredith with Olivia Allen-Lend.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_02]: Are there hard moments with the role like this?
- 14:50[SPEAKER_02]: Like I guess I'm asking emotionally speaking.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I mean, first, I mean, like, I think there's hard moments with every role that you take on, especially with ones like this, where the emotions are so deep and the things that they're going through are so dark.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_03]: But I always say that those rules are just the most fun to play, and they're the most fun to take on, and I really love something that I can sink my teeth into,
- 15:22[SPEAKER_03]: Um, do research on or like, to playing dolly part was the most incredible moment of my life because I got to do so much research into who she is and interviews and watch so much stuff on her.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_03]: Um, and so with a role like this, getting to the wall of the research in the trouble teen industry beforehand to kind of set myself in the character shoes.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_03]: was so great.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_03]: So any just anything that I can really jump into had first and explore and research, I love playing.
- 15:50[SPEAKER_03]: So it can be hard at times, but it's also the most rewarding.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_02]: I will quickly say, I get asked the question down over like 2,500 interviews and people say, who's your favorite?
- 16:00[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, it's Dolly Barton.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_02]: Having Dolly Barton in my series is like, that's it.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_02]: That's it.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_02]: That's
- 16:05[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, she's, she's incredible.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, there's just nobody in the world like her.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_03]: She is, she's everything a person should ever aspire to be in life.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_03]: She's just the most gold-hearted person.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_03]: I love her, her heart is made of gold.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_03]: I love her so much.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_03]: Just mother, mother, mother, mother, mother.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_02]: Like, that's the thing that everybody can agree there.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_02]: Like, it's one of those artists, you know?
- 16:33[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, yeah, everybody agrees on Dali.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_03]: That's nobody has a different opinion.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_03]: And if somebody does their shady, their weird.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_02]: 100% yeah.
- 16:41[SPEAKER_02]: Well, you know, I'll flip that thing, you know, we talk about, you know, because you do have that role as you're saying, but, you know, what the cast like you've got with the cast is big and and and maybe this is a silly version of this this this this question here, but like what's the off camera hang then because when you have such, you know, heaviness happening on camera, like what happens that we don't see when that stops.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_03]: Oh my gosh, I'm so scared of what Cindy's going to post when the show comes out.
- 17:11[SPEAKER_03]: We were so silly and goofy and little children running around this set.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_03]: The second the cameras were off and it was so hilarious because we'd be doing this like hysterical crying scene.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_03]: movies and we would make um Parodies to high school musical dance numbers and like we would we would recreate scenes from movie like we did a scene from die hard And we would get May involved in the whole cast involved and Yeah, there's some black male on Sydney's phone of myself So I'm really nervous for one of the show comes out which is gonna post but off camera We just we all had the most amazing connection
- 17:57[SPEAKER_03]: and everybody really was a family, and it was, it was probably just the most instantly connected I've felt to people.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_03]: It just walking on that set, everybody was just like, I think it was kind of bonded by how important we know.
- 18:14[SPEAKER_03]: The story over the show is and how important it is to tell and so we were all very cautious of telling it right and I think that from the beginning kind of bond to this all in a way just being like we're in this together guys.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_02]: Let's do this But yeah, one of the best experiences I've ever had on set Does this that kind of go with Tony Colette as well because here you have one of the greatest actors of all time and And on screen like she is so crazy
- 18:44[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, she is, oh my gosh.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_03]: I, when I found out that she was going to be in the show, I, I freaked out.
- 18:53[SPEAKER_03]: I fan-girld.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_03]: I was like, okay, this is, this is my star-struck moment.
- 18:58[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I'm freaking out.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, she's such an icon and especially in horror who that I just obviously, again, love so much.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_03]: And so, I was like, oh my god, there's no way that I'm gonna be doing
- 19:14[SPEAKER_03]: just just be like, oh my god, I'm what happened in the scene in her territory.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_03]: So I was I was really, really nervous.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_03]: I was terrified.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_03]: I was so scared that night I met her was it was like 1130.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_03]: P.M.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_03]: on the night of my I was my six I was 16 and is the night of my 17th birthday and so we were filming our first scene together Well the clock turned 12 like 12 o'clock at night me turning 17 and so we were doing the scene and and I met her and she came up with me She gave me the biggest hug and she was the warmest person and the most comforting soul and We got to celebrate my birthday the first night that we met each other and it was just the perfect way to
- 19:59[SPEAKER_03]: Break the ice and just have an incredible relationship with the rest of the show.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, she was just like one of them.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_03]: It's just one of my friends on set.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_03]: Like she's so awesome.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_03]: I'm just getting to talk to her and her makeup trailer and hang out with her and everybody else on set off off set.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_03]: She's just she's incredible.
- 20:17[SPEAKER_03]: She's just like one of the girls.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_03]: It's so weird to think about the Tony Colette is that.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_02]: I like my first thought when you said she just walked up and gave you a hug and I'm thinking about that scene and and we were where she gives me the hug at the beginning.
- 20:28[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, I guess I've been giving hugs wrong all of my life.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
- 20:32[SPEAKER_03]: After I read that, I went and I gave my friend a hug like that and it actually does feel different.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_02]: It does.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_02]: I did the same thing.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_03]: I'm very odd.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_03]: It's very, I'm wondering if that's going to become like, we should some people should make that a TikTok trainer something like giving a hug the right way.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_02]: We all learned how to hug things to this crazy, crazy story.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_02]: It's, uh, you know, we all get something out of it, right?
- 20:54[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_02]: Um, I do.
- 20:56[SPEAKER_02]: I love it.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_02]: I love it.
