Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
• 0:08
Speaker 2: So funny enough. Digging through the archives and I find
• 0:11
Speaker 2: this very timely comparison between Joey O'tani and Babe Ruth
• 0:16
Speaker 2: with the one and only Terminolo's take. I want to
• 0:18
Speaker 2: feature it tonight before Game one because, as we all know,
• 0:22
Speaker 2: Otani had a Ruthian game, three homers, ten strikeouts. I mean,
• 0:27
Speaker 2: who did that before? I feel like that's a Ruthian situation.
• 0:30
Speaker 2: But we dived into the Otani Ruth comparison two years ago.
• 0:35
Speaker 3: He's an excellent hitter, and he's an excellent pitcher, and
• 0:39
Speaker 3: he has a more he has a fifty to fifty chance,
• 0:41
Speaker 3: depending on what happens the last six weeks of the season,
• 0:44
Speaker 3: to win a Cy Young Award. So that would be
• 0:48
Speaker 3: winning MVP and Cy Young would be remarkable. I mean,
• 0:54
  Speaker 3: he's having a remarkable year. I believe he's number one
• 0:57
Speaker 3: in the major leagues at like one eighty nine batting
• 0:59
  Speaker 3: average against him. He's a tremendous He's a tremendous talent.
• 1:03
Speaker 3: He will bring in revenue. He will bring in not
• 1:07
Speaker 3: only revenue at the gate, but through various sponsorships. He'll
• 1:12
Speaker 3: bring not only American sponsors, and he's going to bring
• 1:16
Speaker 3: international sponsors. Of course, he's an international star. But again
• 1:23
  Speaker 3: it's a tough call.
• 1:26
Speaker 1: You know, he disrupts analytics.
• 1:28
Speaker 4: What I mean by that is you're not not going
• 1:30
Speaker 4: to sit out tunny because a right hander or a
• 1:32
Speaker 4: left hander is pitching.
• 1:33
Speaker 1: He's a disruptor to that analytics world.
• 1:35
Speaker 3: I feel like, no, I would say so, you know,
• 1:41
Speaker 3: I would say so.
• 1:42
Speaker 4: The way you're talking reminds me of someone who actually
• 1:45
Speaker 4: you want to talk about last week because a very
• 1:48
Speaker 4: famous baseballer died seventy five years ago last week, tell
• 1:55
Speaker 4: us tell us about why you want to talk about
• 1:58
Speaker 4: Babe Ruth on this on this feature today.
• 2:01
Speaker 3: Well, Babe Ruth, in my opinion, is the greatest athlete
• 2:06
Speaker 3: in team sports, in team sports history. He died seventy
• 2:11
Speaker 3: five years ago our last Wednesday, on August sixteenth, nineteen
• 2:15
Speaker 3: forty eight. He was fifty three years old. Babe Ruth
• 2:20
Speaker 3: is iconic historical star. There's nobody like him. And I
• 2:29
Speaker 3: know we hear a lot about Well Otani's been in
• 2:33
Speaker 3: Babe Ruth. Otani's been in Babe Ruth. Well, talk about
• 2:37
Speaker 3: a slap in the face to Babe Ruth. It's the
• 2:40
Speaker 3: ultimate slap in the face. And I love Otani. I mean,
• 2:44
Speaker 3: I saw him pitched that one hitter against the Tigers
• 2:47
Speaker 3: a couple of weeks ago, he was in total command.
• 2:49
Speaker 3: And then the second game of the on the same day,
• 2:51
Speaker 3: in the second game of double oather, his first two
• 2:53
Speaker 3: times up, he hits two home runs. He hits a
• 2:56
Speaker 3: home run each time up. He's the best player in baseball.
• 3:00
Speaker 3: He deserves all the accolades he gets. But the media,
• 3:03
Speaker 3: whether it's on ESPN or MLB network or on series,
• 3:08
Speaker 3: satellite radio, or anywhere, trying to say that he's the
• 3:11
Speaker 3: best player of all time, I don't see it. I
• 3:15
Speaker 3: don't understand it. You know, Babe Ruth. He had his stats, Alex,
• 3:22
Speaker 3: his impact on the game is like none other. I mean,
• 3:26
Speaker 3: you got to remember he came into baseball just as
• 3:30
Speaker 3: baseball is going through the crossroads and at the tip
• 3:35
Speaker 3: of where it might have gone the other way, not
• 3:37
Speaker 3: have been the national past time. The underworld was involved
• 3:43
Speaker 3: with baseball organized crime in nineteen nineteen with the Black
• 3:47
Speaker 3: Sox scandal, with the White Sox throwing the nineteen ninety
• 3:51
Speaker 3: World Series and eight great baseball players on the best
• 3:55
Speaker 3: team in Baseball, the Chicago White Sox being even though
• 3:59
Speaker 3: they were all acquitted when the case went to trial,
• 4:03
Speaker 3: Kennesaw Mountain Landers, the commission, the first Commissioner of Baseball,
• 4:08
Speaker 3: bought them for life. So they needed somebody to boost them,
• 4:13
Speaker 3: and they were lucky that they had Babe Ruth, who
• 4:16
Speaker 3: had just been sold to the Yankees after a very
• 4:19
Speaker 3: successful career as a pitcher, and he did hit with
• 4:22
Speaker 3: the Red Sox. He did play the outfield also during
• 4:24
Speaker 3: that time came to the Yankees. The Yankees up until
• 4:29
Speaker 3: that time they were formed in nineteen oh one. They
• 4:32
Speaker 3: didn't win their first pennant until nineteen twenty one. Babe,
• 4:35
Speaker 3: when Babe Ruth got to the Yankees, so now, and
• 4:40
Speaker 3: he helped set the dynasty that still exists today as
• 4:44
Speaker 3: the New York Yankees. They called that two years later.
• 4:47
Speaker 3: The Yankees played in twenty one and twenty two in
• 4:50
Speaker 3: the in the Polo Grounds, shared it with the Giants,
• 4:53
Speaker 3: and then moved a half a mile away two years
• 4:57
Speaker 3: later to the first Yankee Stadium. They called the House
• 5:01
Speaker 3: that Ruth built. And that's accurate. No, Babe Ruth, there's
• 5:05
Speaker 3: no Yankee Stadium. You know, he's the first guy to
• 5:08
Speaker 3: hit thirty home runs, the first guy to hit twenty
• 5:11
Speaker 3: home runs, the first guy hit forty home runs, first
• 5:13
Speaker 3: guy hit fifty home runs, the first guy to He
• 5:17
Speaker 3: won ninety four games. He was ninety four and forty six.
• 5:22
Speaker 3: He had one hundred and seventeen complete games, Alex. He
• 5:28
Speaker 3: had seventeen shutouts. He had the longest scoreless streak in
• 5:34
Speaker 3: the World Series play Wings with the Red Sox. I
• 5:36
Speaker 3: think like twenty six or twenty five innings that eventually
• 5:40
Speaker 3: was broken by Yankee left handed Whitey Ford in nineteen
• 5:43
Speaker 3: sixty and sixty one World Series. He was remarkable. He
• 5:49
Speaker 3: was a remarkable player. He scored one hundred and seven
• 5:52
Speaker 3: seventy runs in nineteen twenty one. He never struck out
• 5:57
Speaker 3: one hundred times. Never struck out. This slugger who had
• 6:01
Speaker 3: seven hundred fourteen horns, never struck out one hundred times.
• 6:08
  Speaker 3: He's just he's just a remarkable player. He had a
• 6:11
Speaker 3: three forty four lifetime batting average, three forty four. He
• 6:18
Speaker 3: he's remarkable. Three He was three and zero in the
• 6:21
Speaker 3: World Series play. I mean what you could just go
• 6:26
Speaker 3: on and on, Like I said, most shoutouts by a
• 6:31
Speaker 3: left handed pitcher in the American League ALEX nine. It
• 6:35
Speaker 3: still exists today. Ron Gidrey tied it in nineteen seventy eight.
• 6:41
Speaker 3: I mean, it's it's remarkable. American League in nineteen seventeen.
• 6:47
Speaker 3: He had thirty five complete games in nineteen seventeen.
• 6:50
Speaker 4: Now the whole life, they weren't They weren't worried about
• 6:54
Speaker 4: babying him like they probably are worried about babying Otani
• 6:56
  Speaker 4: a little bit.
• 6:57
Speaker 3: Right, That's the only difference is that.
• 6:59
Speaker 1: Ruth did all they do.
• 7:03
  Speaker 3: You're right, they're actually I guess they're holding him out
• 7:08
Speaker 3: until Wednesday night to pitch next and again. For all
• 7:13
Speaker 3: of Otani's offensive brilliance, he's a designated hitter. Babe Ruth
• 7:19
Speaker 3: never wasn't designated hither. They didn't have it designated hither.
• 7:22
Speaker 3: Back then, Babe Ruth stole one hundred and twenty three bases.
• 7:26
Speaker 3: You think of a slow, lumbering guy, Babe Ruth wasn't slow.
• 7:30
Speaker 3: He stole ten bases or more five seasons. In a
• 7:34
Speaker 3: one World Series game, he sold second and third. I mean,
• 7:40
Speaker 3: this guy was remarkable. He batted three twenty six in
• 7:47
Speaker 3: ten World Series. He had eighteen home runs in World Series.
• 7:52
Speaker 4: Play well I don't know if Otan will ever get
• 7:58
Speaker 4: there with the Angels, but we'll have to see where
• 7:59
Speaker 4: he goes in free agency.
• 8:01
Speaker 1: I don't know. I just think that it was he
• 8:05
Speaker 1: did things that we'll never see before. I mean, he
• 8:07
  Speaker 1: had sixty.
• 8:07
Speaker 4: He must have had sixty homers, right, you know, before
• 8:10
Speaker 4: McGuire did and one season sixty.
• 8:12
Speaker 3: He had sixty home runs in one hundred and fifty
• 8:14
Speaker 3: four games in nineteen twenty seven.
• 8:18
Speaker 4: And I know that those those stats matter, meaning the
• 8:22
Speaker 4: differential of games and nine games more actually changes everything.
• 8:27
Speaker 1: Games more changes everything, doesn't it?
• 8:30
Speaker 3: It absolutely does. I mean, I mean Alex, this guy
• 8:36
Speaker 3: had two hundred. This guy had four hundred and eighty
• 8:38
Speaker 3: eight pitching strikeouts. He had a lifetime era of two
• 8:42
Speaker 3: twenty eight. He batted in two thousand, two hundred and
• 8:46
Speaker 3: fourteen runs besides getting twenty eight hundred and seventy three hits.
• 8:52
Speaker 3: The guy's remarkable seven time world champion. He only won
• 8:56
Speaker 3: one MVP because MVP just started at that time. There
• 9:01
Speaker 3: was no MVP, I be believe, before nineteen twenty one,
• 9:05
Speaker 3: no official MVP led the American League in the home
• 9:08
Speaker 3: runs twelve times. I mean pitched a combined no hitter
• 9:13
Speaker 3: at nineteen seventeen for the Red Sox, you know, and
• 9:19
Speaker 3: also he his importance to the game helped other sports.
• 9:28
Speaker 3: Baseball becoming a national pastime, led to the NFL, the NBA,
• 9:34
Speaker 3: the NHL. If baseball failed, I'm not sure if these
• 9:38
Speaker 3: other sports would have even existed like they do today
• 9:41
Speaker 3: on a team sport level.
• 9:45
Speaker 1: Was he a multi sport athlete, Babe Ruth? I mean,
• 9:47
Speaker 1: can you tell us that.
• 9:48
Speaker 3: I do not believe he was a multi sport athlete.
• 9:52
Speaker 3: I don't believe. I think he concentrated on baseball. He
• 9:56
Speaker 3: maybe played football because he wasn't an offering. And I
• 10:00
Speaker 3: know he was in an orphanage when the Red Sox
• 10:03
Speaker 3: did sign him, and uh uh he uh uh. You
• 10:11
Speaker 3: know then when the Red Sox signed him, and then
• 10:13
Speaker 3: eventually they were in financial problems and they sold them
• 10:18
Speaker 3: to the to the Yankees, and of course that started
• 10:21
Speaker 3: the Curse of the Bambino. It took the Red Sox
• 10:25
Speaker 3: eighty six years to to win their World Series and
• 10:29
Speaker 3: break that that that drought. But he was I do
• 10:36
Speaker 3: not believe he was a play any other sport. But
• 10:41
Speaker 3: he was also not only that, he was also charismatic.
• 10:45
Speaker 3: He was every he was everywhere, and he you know,
• 10:48
Speaker 3: and uh, it's I just can't believe how people are
• 10:54
Speaker 3: trying to say that Otani has been in Bay Ruth.
• 10:58
Speaker 3: It makes no sense. First of all, never mind Babe Bruce.
• 11:01
Speaker 3: And like I told you, I love all times. I
• 11:04
Speaker 3: love watching him pitch and then uh, the next day
• 11:09
Speaker 3: excel at the bat. But he's not as good as
• 11:12
Speaker 3: Willie Mays or McKey mannle or Joe DiMaggio or Ken
• 11:17
Speaker 3: Griffey Jr. Or stand usual, He's not.
• 11:25
  Speaker 1: No, I mean, he's you know, he's he's incredible, But
• 11:30
  Speaker 1: I get what you're saying is that he's not. I
• 11:33
Speaker 1: don't even know you think he's a Hall of Famer.
• 11:36
Speaker 1: I mean we're early in his career. Do you think, oh, yeah, he's.
• 11:39
Speaker 3: On the Hall of Fame path. There's no question about it.
• 11:42
Speaker 3: He's on the path at first ballot Hall of Famer.
• 11:46
Speaker 3: He's a remarkable player. But there's only one, Babe Bruce.
• 11:52
Speaker 2: All right, Lou, I'm going to bring you back in
• 11:54
Speaker 2: for a bonus round here. And you're on the phone
• 11:57
Speaker 2: me now. You said he's a first ballot Hall of Fame.
• 12:00
Speaker 2: The last couple of years since he went to the
• 12:02
Speaker 2: Dodgers truly has etched his place in the Hall of Fame.
• 12:05
Speaker 1: Scandal aside, right, Oh.
• 12:08
  Speaker 3: Absolutely, Alex.
• 12:10
Speaker 5: And remember when he was a free agent, I did
• 12:14
Speaker 5: not think he was gonna go to the Dodgers. I
• 12:15
Speaker 5: had the Giants as the potential landing place, and because
• 12:23
Speaker 5: of the year before, they lost out on Judge at
• 12:25
Speaker 5: the eleventh hour, and I know the Toronto Blue Jays
• 12:29
Speaker 5: made a major offer and at one point it seemed
• 12:33
Speaker 5: like that's where we're gonna go. But he ended up
• 12:35
Speaker 5: with the Dodgers, and obviously he you know, he's just
• 12:40
Speaker 5: extended his legend very greatness and has a chance to
• 12:47
Speaker 5: not only be part of a second straight winning World
• 12:52
Speaker 5: Series champion, but he's gonna pitch in this World Series,
• 12:55
Speaker 5: something he couldn't do last year because he was recovering
• 12:58
Speaker 5: from the Tommy Johnson So he is definitely a unique player,
• 13:04
Speaker 5: and he's definitely bring eyeballs to the TV sets.
• 13:08
Speaker 1: And is the number one.
• 13:12
Speaker 5: Draw internationally in baseball.
• 13:15
Speaker 2: All right, lou So that was Terminella's take. Extra But
• 13:19
Speaker 2: when you saw that home run, three home run, ten strikeout, game,
• 13:22
Speaker 2: six innings scoreless, we both weren't around for Babe Ruth.
• 13:26
Speaker 2: But we all know the highlights. Did it remind you
• 13:28
Speaker 2: of what you watched in the highlight reel of Babe Ruth?
• 13:31
  Speaker 5: Or what?
• 13:32
Speaker 3: Oh? Yes, I remember when Day was a pitcher.
• 13:35
Speaker 5: He was almost exclusively a pitcher and played and he
• 13:40
Speaker 5: also played the outfield. But you know he won ninety
• 13:44
  Speaker 5: three games as.
• 13:45
Speaker 3: A pitcher, lost only forty four.
• 13:47
Speaker 5: We said many times he had the World Series record
• 13:49
Speaker 5: for most scoreless innings consecutively until Whitey Ford broken.
• 13:54
Speaker 3: In nineteen sixty one. Again, Ohtanie's great.
• 13:59
Speaker 5: What he did last week was maybe the greatest single
• 14:02
Speaker 5: game effort ever. Six innings, ten strikeouts, three mammoth home
• 14:07
Speaker 5: runs in a clinching game against the Brewers. But the
• 14:12
Speaker 5: Babe Ruth is the reason, Oh Tony had an opportunity
• 14:15
Speaker 5: to do that, and all these guys.
• 14:17
  Speaker 3: Were playing today.
• 14:18
Speaker 5: Babe Ruth saved baseball when it was coming off. The
• 14:22
Speaker 5: Chicago White Sox throwing off games, the Black Sox scandal,
• 14:27
Speaker 5: and Babe Ruth saved baseball. Remember baby Bruce was hitting.
• 14:32
Speaker 5: When Baby Bruce was hitting sixty home runs and fifty
• 14:34
Speaker 5: four home runs, he was out slugging.
• 14:39
  Speaker 3: Teams.
• 14:40
Speaker 5: Teams weren't hitting fifty four home runs or sixty and
• 14:43
Speaker 5: Babe was doing it by himself.
• 14:45
Speaker 2: Well, there you go. I'll extended Terminolo's take tonight because
• 14:50
Speaker 2: this is why you keep the archives. This was from
• 14:51
Speaker 2: twenty twenty three. I found this. How about that.
• 14:55
Speaker 5: Time flies Alex and.
• 14:57
Speaker 2: Boy talk about the Angels. Such a missed opportunity. You
• 15:00
Speaker 2: can get into that another night, But man oh man
• 15:02
Speaker 2: Otani trout that was a missed opportunity for the Angels
• 15:07
  Speaker 2: big time.
• 15:09
Speaker 5: Yeah, no doubt about it.
• 15:11
Speaker 2: But for now it's world series about an hour away.
• 15:14
Speaker 2: Low enjoy it, and yet everybody out there listening enjoy it.
• 15:17
Speaker 2: This was Terminalo's take extra tonight.
