Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: It's time to talk to Utah quarterback Devin Dampier. This
- 0:05Speaker 1: is Dishing with Devin on the Sean O'Connell Show. Brought
- 0:08Speaker 1: to you by Colligan Water, Salt Lake City, America First
- 0:11Speaker 1: Credit Union, and Valley Plumbing, Heating and Cooling. Now here's
- 0:15Speaker 1: OC with Ute Star signal caller Devin Dampier on your
- 0:19Speaker 1: home of the Utes and your home for football. ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 0:25Speaker 2: It's that time again on the Sean O'Connell show edition
- 0:29Speaker 2: with dev, our conversation with Q B one, who is
- 0:33Speaker 2: one to know as you're starting quarterback this year at
- 0:35Speaker 2: the university of Utah, big game coming up against Arkansas.
- 0:39Speaker 2: This Saturday, Devin damp here brought to you by Culligan water,
- 0:45Speaker 2: Valley plumbing, heating and cooling and America first credit union dev.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Welcome again. How are you, sir? Do well, do well.
- 0:54Speaker 2: All right, so 1-0. The best thing about being 1-0
- 0:58Speaker 2: is a chance to go 2-0. No surprises, really. It
- 1:01Speaker 2: was a dominant performance against Idaho, but tell me how
- 1:05Speaker 2: it felt. Tell me how it was to get out
- 1:07Speaker 2: there against a team that didn't wear the same colors
- 1:09Speaker 2: as you after camp and all that.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I think the best part about it is, again,
- 1:15Speaker 3: I've been preaching it the last two weeks, just everybody
- 1:18Speaker 3: being together for once and being on that same side,
- 1:21Speaker 3: but honestly, offensive-wise, I was I was pretty excited how
- 1:26Speaker 3: we came out. I feel like you look at a
- 1:28Speaker 3: couple other teams during week one and their offense didn't
- 1:31Speaker 3: look like they.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Came out prepared.
- 1:33Speaker 3: There were some tweaks they had to make by halftime.
- 1:36Speaker 3: I feel like we kind of came out on all cylinders.
- 1:39Speaker 3: I was just proud of our preparation. How did it
- 1:43Speaker 3: feel getting hit for real? Because one thing, you don't
- 1:47Speaker 3: shy away from it, Dev. There's a lot of people,
- 1:49Speaker 3: a lot of us watching, just like, oh, don't take
- 1:51Speaker 3: that hit. Oh, Dev, don't get hit so much. Dev,
- 1:53Speaker 3: just step out of bounds. But you're not shy about it.
- 1:56Speaker 3: You're a football player. How did it feel to get
- 1:58Speaker 3: hit for real?
- 1:59Speaker 2: Because obviously they kind of bubble wrap you for the
- 2:01Speaker 2: last seven or eight months.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Yeah, I definitely felt the first one. And then after that,
- 2:06Speaker 3: I was good. But yeah, the first one, I think
- 2:08Speaker 3: I threw a ball and I got smacked. But I
- 2:11Speaker 3: was like, all right, but. I think it was Wayshawn's touchdown.
- 2:15Speaker 2: That was the one, yeah. I got, yeah, yeah. But
- 2:19Speaker 2: you're all right. I'm good, I'm good. Yeah. I mean,
- 2:22Speaker 2: do you kind of like that? Does it feel like,
- 2:24Speaker 2: all right, now it's football again? Because I got, you know,
- 2:27Speaker 2: I got tackled, I got hit a little bit, and
- 2:30Speaker 2: it's a real game.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Does that wake you up somewhat? Yeah, it puts me
- 2:34Speaker 3: in that mode. Like, all right, we're here.
- 2:37Speaker 2: We're here. We're playing. All right. So, self-scout. You've seen
- 2:41Speaker 2: the film now. Obviously, you played the game itself. Give
- 2:45Speaker 2: me a grade for Devin Dampier. How do you feel
- 2:46Speaker 2: like you did first time out? I would say like
- 2:52Speaker 2: a B. Okay. B plus. Yeah. I would put myself
- 2:58Speaker 2: around there. Okay. Elaborate for me if you don't mind. Okay.
- 3:03Speaker 2: What would have been an A? Why wasn't it an A?
- 3:06Speaker 2: We're nitpicking like everyone else is, so tell me what
- 3:09Speaker 2: you wanted to see better from yourself looking back at
- 3:11Speaker 2: it or whatever.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Well, protection-wise, I hope I helped myself without getting hit more.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Okay.
- 3:19Speaker 3: I prefer to not get hit every time I throw
- 3:21Speaker 3: the ball because it's me not telling the line to
- 3:24Speaker 3: go block him and stuff like that.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I don't know. There's always every game you're like, oh,
- 3:30Speaker 2: I could have done this slightly better. Of course.
- 3:32Speaker 3: This is how I feel about every single play. I'm like,
- 3:35Speaker 3: all right, I could have probably did this and we
- 3:37Speaker 3: would have did a little bit better.
- 3:38Speaker 2: So a really, really solid stat line, obviously 13 of 18, 176,
- 3:43Speaker 2: almost 10 yards of completion. That's a nice number. Let's
- 3:46Speaker 2: keep it up there all year. Right. Three touchdowns, no interceptions,
- 3:51Speaker 2: running the ball, six carries for 31 yards. I don't
- 3:56Speaker 2: have it in front of me. How many of those
- 3:57Speaker 2: were designed and how many of you actually just had
- 3:59Speaker 2: to kind of pull the ball down and scoot. But,
- 4:02Speaker 2: Felt like an even split maybe. Is that accurate? I'd
- 4:07Speaker 2: probably say I got a lot more off scramble. Okay. Design.
- 4:13Speaker 2: You guys, because, I mean, partially because it was Idaho,
- 4:16Speaker 2: partially because you jumped out to a big lead and
- 4:18Speaker 2: got to run. Ten different guys got to run the
- 4:20Speaker 2: ball in this game, and I know that's not going
- 4:22Speaker 2: to be the norm, but we've been talking about it
- 4:25Speaker 2: all offseason long. You got all these weapons, and you
- 4:28Speaker 2: got to spread the ball around, and you got to
- 4:30Speaker 2: keep everybody happy. What was the vibe at halftime and
- 4:33Speaker 2: then in the locker room after the game? Because a
- 4:35Speaker 2: lot of the skilled guys, a lot of these guys
- 4:36Speaker 2: who've been putting in this work did get the reward
- 4:39Speaker 2: of actually getting touches in the game. And plenty of
- 4:42Speaker 2: you got touchdowns in the game. So probably one of those,
- 4:46Speaker 2: those post game situations where everyone feels pretty good. Yeah. Yeah.
- 4:49Speaker 3: It was definitely went into the game, you know, wanting
- 4:51Speaker 3: to get certain people, the ball for sure. Just especially way, Sean,
- 4:55Speaker 3: make sure way Sean's feeling good about running the ball,
- 4:57Speaker 3: especially for this week coming up.
- 4:59Speaker 2: And then, I mean, yeah, just, Keeps trickling down.
- 5:02Speaker 3: We wanted everybody to get an opportunity to get in
- 5:05Speaker 3: the game and feel that experience. It was due to
- 5:08Speaker 3: us ones to make sure we made that gap early.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Even the defensive side, too, that they could get in
- 5:14Speaker 2: as well. A lot of Ute fans have been watching
- 5:20Speaker 2: this team for decades. One of the things that people
- 5:26Speaker 2: always come into the year, and we've talked about this
- 5:28Speaker 2: plenty as I comment, Running game's going to be good.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Hope we get really solid quarterback play. We think that's
- 5:35Speaker 2: going to be the case. And there's always this insecurity,
- 5:38Speaker 2: this trepidation about what the wide receiving core is going
- 5:41Speaker 2: to look like. There's been a lot of optimism and
- 5:43Speaker 2: positivity around that position, but people were still holding their breath.
- 5:47Speaker 2: And then what we saw from Braden, what we saw
- 5:51Speaker 2: from Larry Simmons, what you saw even in just a
- 5:53Speaker 2: couple catches from Creed Whittemore, was that representative of kind
- 5:57Speaker 2: of what you expected it to be? Because you've been
- 5:59Speaker 2: practicing with these guys for, You've been telling us, don't worry.
- 6:03Speaker 2: We've got plenty of talent there. And it looked like,
- 6:06Speaker 2: I mean, Idaho was completely overmatched, but it looked like
- 6:08Speaker 2: that kind of stuff is going to translate even against Arkansas. Yeah. Yeah.
- 6:12Speaker 3: I think almost everyone that caught a ball had at
- 6:15Speaker 3: least like two catches almost.
- 6:17Speaker 2: So just. Yeah. Mana and Noah Benny were the only
- 6:20Speaker 2: ones who got a catch. Okay. Yeah. Yeah.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Besides that, I mean, we feel very comfortable just. Not
- 6:27Speaker 3: overloading one receiver or two receivers. It felt like everybody
- 6:30Speaker 3: is able to make their separation. We're able to call
- 6:33Speaker 3: stuff depending on who the defense wants to give the
- 6:36Speaker 3: opportunity to.
- 6:37Speaker 2: So, yeah, I thought those boys did a great job.
- 6:41Speaker 2: The number one topic of conversation between us and everyone
- 6:45Speaker 2: in the market has been what's the offensive line going
- 6:48Speaker 2: to look like? And we were told there's going to
- 6:50Speaker 2: be different combinations against Idaho. I don't know how many
- 6:53Speaker 2: guys actually played. It felt like 15 offensive linemen got
- 6:56Speaker 2: a few snaps, right, especially when you go down third
- 6:58Speaker 2: and fourth quarter. But even early, there were some different
- 7:02Speaker 2: combinations tested out. How did you feel about the protection?
- 7:06Speaker 2: How did you feel about the run blocking and just
- 7:08Speaker 2: the performance of that offensive line?
- 7:10Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, we're still trying to finalize that, obviously, just
- 7:14Speaker 3: with the different groups of last week. But, yeah, I mean,
- 7:18Speaker 3: I feel– I don't really recognize who's in and who's
- 7:21Speaker 3: not just because I don't have alignment. I need to
- 7:23Speaker 3: worry about when he's in. I need to do something
- 7:26Speaker 3: different or exotic. I feel pretty comfortable with whoever my
- 7:30Speaker 3: five is up there that they're going to get that
- 7:32Speaker 3: job done.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Devin Dampier is our guest here. Dishing with Dev is
- 7:36Speaker 2: brought to you by Culligan Water, Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling,
- 7:39Speaker 2: and America First Credit Union. Big win over Idaho. That's
- 7:45Speaker 2: kind of what we expected. It was the short week,
- 7:48Speaker 2: so what were Friday and Saturday like for you, having
- 7:51Speaker 2: played on Thursday? It's not quite the regular season schedule
- 7:57Speaker 2: when you've got that early game, so how did you
- 7:59Speaker 2: handle those next two days?
- 8:01Speaker 3: My family was in town, so definitely with them all weekend.
- 8:05Speaker 3: I definitely got to watch a lot more college football
- 8:08Speaker 3: than I ever have, just because We're normally playing.
- 8:12Speaker 2: On one of those days. That's right, yes.
- 8:13Speaker 3: I don't get to watch all of the games, but yeah,
- 8:15Speaker 3: I was able to just literally sit down and watch
- 8:19Speaker 3: all the games play by.
- 8:21Speaker 2: That's nice.
- 8:23Speaker 4: You get to be a civilian. You get to be
- 8:24Speaker 4: like the rest of us. Well, there's one of those
- 8:28Speaker 4: games I want to.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Talk about for obvious reasons here coming up because it's
- 8:31Speaker 2: the big story in college football, but I want to
- 8:33Speaker 2: stay focused on the Utes for now. And now you
- 8:36Speaker 2: turn the page. And you've got to get ready for
- 8:38Speaker 2: an SEC team coming into Rice-Eccles Stadium. That doesn't happen
- 8:42Speaker 2: very often. Obviously, Florida came here a couple years back,
- 8:45Speaker 2: but SEC teams don't go west that often. And this
- 8:50Speaker 2: is an Arkansas team that has some real talent on it. Now,
- 8:53Speaker 2: I don't think they're top of the conference, top of
- 8:56Speaker 2: their conference, but it's a game you have to take
- 8:59Speaker 2: very seriously, and there's athletes, and it's definitely going to
- 9:01Speaker 2: look a lot different on the opposite side of things
- 9:03Speaker 2: than the Idaho Vandals did. What are you seeing from
- 9:06Speaker 2: Arkansas so far on film? What is something that you're
- 9:09Speaker 2: paying attention to?
- 9:11Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I think they're a very athletic team. Just
- 9:15Speaker 3: the height, the weight, and, you know, the way they
- 9:17Speaker 3: move around. You know, they're definitely a well-polished team. So,
- 9:23Speaker 3: you know, it's got to be whoever steps their best
- 9:26Speaker 3: foot forward and, you know, closes out that game.
- 9:29Speaker 2: So I'm pretty excited to get to go against Arkansas. Okay,
- 9:33Speaker 2: there's a lot of conversation from the Arkansas side of
- 9:35Speaker 2: things about the kickoff time for this game. I don't
- 9:38Speaker 2: know if you've heard about any of this. Their athletic
- 9:41Speaker 2: director sent an email complaining that it was going to
- 9:46Speaker 2: be midnight by the time the second half started for them.
- 9:49Speaker 2: It's a 9.15 local time. Their body clock will think
- 9:52Speaker 2: it's 9 o'clock. Do you care what time a game
- 9:57Speaker 2: kicks off from like a body clock perspective because obviously
- 10:00Speaker 2: you know pack 12 after dark now big 12 after
- 10:03Speaker 2: dark sometimes you're playing until midnight one in the morning
- 10:07Speaker 2: almost like do you even pay attention.
- 10:08Speaker 3: To that no not really i i mean we we
- 10:13Speaker 3: normally try to adjust the schedule to make us feel
- 10:17Speaker 3: like the week is normal, I guess, or the game
- 10:20Speaker 3: will be normal. I don't know if they have a
- 10:23Speaker 3: structure like that, but we definitely do everything we can
- 10:26Speaker 3: to try to prepare our bodies to be awake at
- 10:28Speaker 3: that time, be ready to go.
- 10:31Speaker 2: I'm quite surprised. An athletic director should do those things.
- 10:35Speaker 2: They should campaign for their team. Their coach was talking
- 10:39Speaker 2: about it. in his media availability this week, like, Oh yeah,
- 10:41Speaker 2: it's going to be a late game for us. I'm like,
- 10:43Speaker 2: this is crazy. Why, why are you giving your players excuses?
- 10:46Speaker 2: But that's not my business. They can handle it however
- 10:49Speaker 2: they want to. So knowing that it is going to
- 10:53Speaker 2: be a little bit tougher on the opposite side this week, right?
- 10:58Speaker 2: More talented, bigger, faster, stronger. Does it change how you
- 11:03Speaker 2: guys are preparing, practicing, doing treatment, anything like that? Does
- 11:06Speaker 2: it change the Utah football routine at all? knowing that
- 11:10Speaker 2: it's Arkansas instead of Idaho? No, I mean, you know,
- 11:13Speaker 2: they run a different defense. So, I mean, that's the
- 11:17Speaker 2: most you're going to get a different scheme from us. But,
- 11:21Speaker 2: you know, besides that, I think you go out there
- 11:24Speaker 2: and you got to be that guy when game day
- 11:26Speaker 2: comes up. They have one defensive end who's like, I've
- 11:33Speaker 2: seen his name popping up, Quincy Rhodes Jr. His name's
- 11:37Speaker 2: been popping up on, like, mock drafts and things like that.
- 11:42Speaker 2: When you know that there's a guy like that, or
- 11:44Speaker 2: maybe even a couple of guys like that on the
- 11:45Speaker 2: opposite team, do you pay extra attention in film, trying
- 11:49Speaker 2: to find their tendencies, trying to find what their strengths are,
- 11:52Speaker 2: how you can avoid those and things like that. Do
- 11:54Speaker 2: you ever hone in on individual players in an opposition,
- 11:58Speaker 2: in an opposing defense? Yeah.
- 12:00Speaker 3: I mean, you definitely respect your opponent and, you know,
- 12:04Speaker 3: some of those guys are very talented as well. So, Um,
- 12:07Speaker 3: you know, you just find, you just try to find
- 12:09Speaker 3: ways to slow them down and make our stuff work. So, uh,
- 12:14Speaker 3: you know, that's our thought process when, you know, you
- 12:16Speaker 3: have good players on the other side.
- 12:18Speaker 2: All right. We were the home of the Utes. We've
- 12:21Speaker 2: been talking more Michigan football this week than I ever
- 12:24Speaker 2: wanted to because of the controversy at the end of
- 12:27Speaker 2: that game. I imagine for you who got to be
- 12:31Speaker 2: a fan for once, seeing some of that was very,
- 12:33Speaker 2: very different, right? Cause these are your friends. These are
- 12:35Speaker 2: guys you were on the team with last year. like
- 12:38Speaker 2: JJ caught the game winner. What were your thoughts watching
- 12:42Speaker 2: that whole thing unfold? Um, man. Well, I could tell
- 12:48Speaker 2: wit wasn't happy. He was, I know that face. I
- 12:53Speaker 2: have seen that man look a little displeased even after
- 12:56Speaker 2: wins in the past. That was the same wit after
- 12:59Speaker 2: that you see after a loss though. Yeah. Like it's,
- 13:02Speaker 2: that was not in his mind. That was not a victory.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Like the camera was on him on the sideline. I
- 13:06Speaker 3: was like, I, he's not happy right now, but yeah,
- 13:10Speaker 3: I mean, man, yeah, it was, I hope they come out,
- 13:14Speaker 3: you know, that the way they should against Oklahoma.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Can we block any Michigan phone numbers from contacting you
- 13:23Speaker 2: or bird or any, like, can we keep it from
- 13:26Speaker 2: the Michigan area code for being able to contact you?
- 13:29Speaker 2: Is that, is that something we could do? Because I
- 13:33Speaker 2: was talking about this and people are probably going to
- 13:34Speaker 2: be mad because that I'm bringing this up when we're
- 13:36Speaker 2: talking to you, but like their quarterback completely underperformed. And
- 13:43Speaker 2: the natural thing for me is to go, oh, wait
- 13:46Speaker 2: a second. If they try to fix that problem, obviously
- 13:48Speaker 2: they can't do it this year, but they try to
- 13:50Speaker 2: fix that problem. They're going to go with somebody. They
- 13:52Speaker 2: know like dev block, block the Michigan numbers. You know
- 13:56Speaker 2: what I mean? Don't go for it. Don't go for it.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Did you get any phone calls yet.
- 14:03Speaker 4: You heard it here first on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 14:07Speaker 4: In week two, Devin has not yet been contacted by
- 14:10Speaker 4: the University of Michigan. Big week also, as you guys
- 14:14Speaker 4: take on Arkansas, from like a program history perspective, it
- 14:19Speaker 4: is a ring of honor inductee day, right? Eric Weddle,
- 14:23Speaker 4: who is a former teammate of mine, good friend of mine,
- 14:26Speaker 4: a guy who's, I think for a lot of people
- 14:28Speaker 4: in Salt Lake City, he is like the quintessential Ute.
- 14:32Speaker 4: He's the guy they think of when they think of
- 14:33Speaker 4: Utah football in the last 20.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Or so years. What is your sense, perception, relationship? What
- 14:42Speaker 2: is Eric Weddle for you? Because you're going to be
- 14:44Speaker 2: there and watch as his name goes up and is
- 14:46Speaker 2: immortalized on the side of that stadium.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I got to meet him twice since I've been
- 14:53Speaker 3: here and just the conversations I've had with him, he's
- 14:56Speaker 3: been Like, top-notch, respectful guy.
- 14:59Speaker 2: You know, somebody you want to be around for sure.
- 15:01Speaker 3: So, I'm glad, you know, the character adds on to
- 15:04Speaker 3: what he does on the field. Because even I told him,
- 15:06Speaker 3: I was like, I knew you as the Madden safety. Like,
- 15:09Speaker 3: I was taking the charges of what do we play
- 15:11Speaker 3: with you. Like, it was kind of, he had that
- 15:13Speaker 3: type of aura just in the NFL, too.
- 15:16Speaker 2: So, I was just like, yeah, like, I have huge
- 15:18Speaker 2: respect for you. You know, I'm happy to, I got
- 15:22Speaker 2: to learn what he did here, being a Uta as well. So, yeah. Very,
- 15:27Speaker 2: very respected guy. As Morgan showed you guys any Eric
- 15:30Speaker 2: Weddle film in the Utah uniform, has that been part
- 15:32Speaker 2: of the week or anything? No, we haven't got to
- 15:35Speaker 2: see it yet. We haven't got to see it yet. Morgan,
- 15:37Speaker 2: Coach Scali, that's something. You've got to let these young
- 15:40Speaker 2: bucks know what your former teammate was all about. He was,
- 15:44Speaker 2: I mean, you have some of these guys on the
- 15:47Speaker 2: roster right now. I mean, you're probably one of these
- 15:50Speaker 2: guys yourself. Like, you could line Eric Weddle up and
- 15:53Speaker 2: have him play a couple downs at quarterback. they put
- 15:55Speaker 2: them in the wildcat all the time, right? He was
- 15:57Speaker 2: the holder. He could throw passes. He could catch passes.
- 16:00Speaker 2: He could run for touchdowns. And obviously he was an
- 16:02Speaker 2: all American defender for his entire time at the university
- 16:06Speaker 2: of Utah. So you got a couple of guys like
- 16:08Speaker 2: that on the roster. Now, when we're talking about, you know,
- 16:11Speaker 2: the guys who are great at their position and then
- 16:13Speaker 2: the guys who are just great at football, does that,
- 16:17Speaker 2: does that carry a different weight in the locker room?
- 16:19Speaker 2: When you're like, I could be anywhere. You can put
- 16:21Speaker 2: them in any position. It'd be great.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I think, besides quarterback probably or O-line, like
- 16:30Speaker 3: if you can add, because Scali always talks about it,
- 16:33Speaker 3: if you can add value to yourself, if you can
- 16:35Speaker 3: be a football guy and you could get placed anywhere
- 16:38Speaker 3: and honestly like be able to talk and do what
- 16:41Speaker 3: you need to do, like that's what's going to get
- 16:43Speaker 3: you to the next level because, you know, everyone's looking
- 16:46Speaker 3: for someone to be more valuable than just playing their position.
- 16:49Speaker 2: So it's definitely preaching.
- 16:51Speaker 3: It's good to know that, you know, your guys are,
- 16:54Speaker 3: they're so football into it that they're able to do
- 16:57Speaker 3: that and step up to different positions.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Uh, is there anyone, cause everyone kind of got a
- 17:03Speaker 2: little bit of love offensively in this game, in this
- 17:06Speaker 2: game against Idaho. Is there anyone that you're like, all right,
- 17:08Speaker 2: let's get him the ball a little bit more against Arkansas.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Is there anyone that you, you want to see, you know,
- 17:13Speaker 2: Mack G who we're going to be talking to also
- 17:15Speaker 2: this week, uh, design a couple of touches for, so
- 17:19Speaker 2: that you can, the rest of us can see what
- 17:22Speaker 2: they've been doing.
- 17:23Speaker 3: Um, Man, I mean, obviously the receiver core, I want
- 17:28Speaker 3: them to be able to shine, you know, against anybody
- 17:31Speaker 3: we play against. I don't want it to just be
- 17:33Speaker 3: an Idaho fluke. You know, I want those guys to
- 17:35Speaker 3: shine any time we need them. And I think Weishan's
- 17:39Speaker 3: pretty passionate about getting to his 100 yards this game, too.
- 17:42Speaker 2: So you should be able to see that from him.
- 17:45Speaker 2: It was interesting, Weishan, in the post-practice media availability this week,
- 17:50Speaker 2: you know, he was praised for not only making an
- 17:52Speaker 2: impact in the run game, which... We expect him to
- 17:55Speaker 2: every week, but he was obviously valuable catching passes as well.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Two touchdown catches in that game. And he kind of
- 18:03Speaker 2: laughed and said, that's just a little bit of what
- 18:04Speaker 2: I can do in the passing game. You're going to
- 18:07Speaker 2: see a lot more. He's hinting at, you know, more
- 18:10Speaker 2: way Sean as a pass catcher. Is that something you
- 18:12Speaker 2: guys expect as the season wages on? Yeah, no, for sure.
- 18:17Speaker 3: We expect waste on the, You know, it's just the
- 18:20Speaker 3: matchup things. You know, normally they want linebackers to guard
- 18:24Speaker 3: running backs. And, you know, for us, that's like, wait, Sean,
- 18:28Speaker 3: do what you do, because I don't think I wouldn't
- 18:30Speaker 3: take any linebacker over guard to you. So, you know,
- 18:33Speaker 3: normally you can get in those type of things or even. Yeah,
- 18:37Speaker 3: he's he was a big check down piece this last
- 18:39Speaker 3: game where I'm able to give him a check down.
- 18:41Speaker 3: He takes it for eight, 10 yards like that's huge
- 18:44Speaker 3: for an offensive play.
- 18:47Speaker 2: You and bird, we've talked a lot about this, the
- 18:50Speaker 2: unique nature of your relationship, the fact that you seem
- 18:54Speaker 2: happy to share the ball and happy to share the
- 18:57Speaker 2: position a little bit. He played great. He had a
- 18:59Speaker 2: big impact on this game. You played great, had a
- 19:02Speaker 2: huge impact on this game. Tell me what, you know,
- 19:06Speaker 2: how bird graded out, how you guys evaluated each other
- 19:08Speaker 2: and how you're pushing each other to get better after
- 19:10Speaker 2: now live action. Yeah.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Um, Yeah, so Bird's like the playmaker. He's the playmaker
- 19:17Speaker 3: in our offense. So he's trying to find the ways
- 19:21Speaker 3: to continue to get better at the playmaker stuff we
- 19:26Speaker 3: put him into, but also developing as a quarterback too. So,
- 19:31Speaker 3: you know, I give him kudos for being able to
- 19:33Speaker 3: handle both of those at the same time because that's
- 19:36Speaker 3: hard to do, especially in college. So, yeah, just the
- 19:40Speaker 3: type of playmaker he is, though, we definitely try to,
- 19:43Speaker 3: Get him on the field as much as possible and
- 19:45Speaker 3: make sure he's touching the ball.
- 19:47Speaker 2: He had that one throw rolling to his right. He's
- 19:50Speaker 2: left-handed and beautiful, accurate pass, kind of twist the body.
- 19:55Speaker 2: It went a little bit viral. Not like crazy viral,
- 19:58Speaker 2: but people were talking about that throw. When something like
- 20:02Speaker 2: that happens, when you're on the sideline and you see
- 20:04Speaker 2: that pass, and then, of course, you're in the film
- 20:07Speaker 2: room and you see that. I mean, that's a special play.
- 20:10Speaker 2: What was your reaction in the moment and then, you know,
- 20:13Speaker 2: the conversation after?
- 20:15Speaker 3: Yeah, it's funny. That's just something, you know, we do
- 20:19Speaker 3: daily practice. Like, we practice that. Coach Gundy has us
- 20:23Speaker 3: do that throw, like, almost every day. So, like, even
- 20:26Speaker 3: for him, like, we thought it was just like a
- 20:28Speaker 3: normal throw. Like, we were just like.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, we do that. And then for the public
- 20:33Speaker 2: to see it, we're like, ah, not, not.
- 20:37Speaker 3: But, yeah, it was cool to see him make that throw.
- 20:40Speaker 3: It's definitely a unique throw in the situation, and he
- 20:43Speaker 3: made the best of it for sure.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Big win over Idaho. Everyone in the Big 12 that
- 20:51Speaker 2: played kind of lesser competition handled that lesser competition. And
- 20:56Speaker 2: we were joking when you walked in about how, Already
- 20:59Speaker 2: the rivalry is in full swing, right? Like being a
- 21:01Speaker 2: fan and being able to watch college football this weekend,
- 21:05Speaker 2: did you watch, I don't know, like Texas Tech extra close?
- 21:08Speaker 2: Did you watch BYU extra close? Did you select the
- 21:12Speaker 2: games that you were going to watch based on teams
- 21:14Speaker 2: you're going to be playing or just who you were
- 21:16Speaker 2: curious about? How did you choose your viewership this weekend
- 21:21Speaker 2: as a fan? Yeah, I think I had three games
- 21:25Speaker 2: going at once. Nice. So on three different screens to
- 21:28Speaker 2: lose this.
- 21:30Speaker 3: I had at least the game I knew that was
- 21:34Speaker 3: going to be a good game.
- 21:35Speaker 2: I had that in the middle.
- 21:36Speaker 3: And then I had like the curiosities just kind of
- 21:39Speaker 3: switching between the other ones. Who I felt like watching
- 21:43Speaker 3: at the time and whose score was a little bit
- 21:46Speaker 3: closer and stuff like that. But yeah, I feel like
- 21:49Speaker 3: I watched probably every single game that was played.
- 21:52Speaker 2: Did anybody in the big 12, did anything like stick
- 21:55Speaker 2: out for you? Was there anything that you're like, oh, okay.
- 21:58Speaker 2: I didn't know about that team looking that good. Or
- 22:00Speaker 2: they didn't look as good as I thought they would.
- 22:03Speaker 2: There was, you know, mixed results. I thought you played
- 22:06Speaker 2: on the same night. So we could watch the Colorado game,
- 22:09Speaker 2: Colorado beat in Georgia tech on that block field goal.
- 22:11Speaker 2: That was that surprised me because Georgia tech was a
- 22:14Speaker 2: really physical team last year. I didn't think Colorado was
- 22:16Speaker 2: going to be able to keep pace with that. That
- 22:18Speaker 2: was a good win for the conference. Anything else from
- 22:21Speaker 2: at least a Big 12 perspective jump out at you
- 22:23Speaker 2: this week?
- 22:27Speaker 3: I mean, not in a disrespectful way. I just expected
- 22:29Speaker 3: more out of Oklahoma State. Just the way that was
- 22:32Speaker 3: talked about. I was definitely expecting a little bit more.
- 22:35Speaker 2: I think all of us were. We were skeptical that
- 22:39Speaker 2: everyone was like, oh, this is the team. Drew Mestemaker.
- 22:42Speaker 2: Respect to him because.
- 22:44Speaker 4: We all love guys that come from a slightly lower level.
- 22:47Speaker 2: For sure. I came that same way. Exactly, right? I
- 22:50Speaker 2: know there's a lot of really good guys that got
- 22:53Speaker 2: under-recruited out of high school and stuff. People were talking
- 22:55Speaker 2: about Drew Mestemaker, like he's the best quarterback in the
- 22:58Speaker 2: Big 12 Conference now. And we've kind of been like, well,
- 23:01Speaker 2: hold on a minute. There's a bunch of guys that
- 23:03Speaker 2: are already a little bit more proven than that. But
- 23:06Speaker 2: he didn't have his best day. They didn't have their
- 23:08Speaker 2: best day. 24-10 loss for Oklahoma State. Okay. Okay. I
- 23:14Speaker 2: got mad about the Baylor game because that's Big 12
- 23:16Speaker 2: versus SEC. Yeah. I love Dave Aranda. Dave Aranda went
- 23:22Speaker 2: for the win instead of playing for overtime. I know
- 23:27Speaker 2: that that's something you got to do. You got to
- 23:29Speaker 2: make that decision as a head coach. They get stopped.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Beautiful tackle at the goal line by an Auburn defender.
- 23:35Speaker 2: They get stopped just short. And I guess you got
- 23:38Speaker 2: to live with that because one person executed better than
- 23:41Speaker 2: you executed. But... I wanted to see that game go
- 23:44Speaker 2: to overtime. I thought that Baylor was going to be
- 23:45Speaker 2: able to win it. You're the starting quarterback. Your coach
- 23:50Speaker 2: is like, we're going to play for overtime, or we're
- 23:52Speaker 2: going to go for the win right now. What do
- 23:54Speaker 2: you prefer? I would have went for the win, too, partially.
- 23:59Speaker 2: I think it was the right call. I honestly think
- 24:01Speaker 2: he was open, too.
- 24:02Speaker 3: I think the quarterback left it behind him just slightly,
- 24:05Speaker 3: and he couldn't really get in position to at least
- 24:08Speaker 3: run in there.
- 24:12Speaker 2: But, yeah, I mean, that's a good tackle. That's a
- 24:15Speaker 2: good way to make up him being open too.
- 24:18Speaker 3: But, yeah, there's something about I just trust myself to
- 24:22Speaker 3: get that situation done when it comes to winning that game.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Even as I ask that question, I'm like, why am
- 24:28Speaker 2: I asking this question?
- 24:28Speaker 4: Of course, we know Dev well enough now to be
- 24:31Speaker 4: like he wants to be aggressive.
- 24:32Speaker 2: That's why we let the coaches make the decisions. He
- 24:35Speaker 2: wants to go for the win. Yeah, that one I
- 24:39Speaker 2: was like, dang, Baylor, we– We needed that one for
- 24:42Speaker 2: the Big 12 conference, but now you roll forward, week two, Arkansas,
- 24:47Speaker 2: and now it'll be Utah with a win over an
- 24:50Speaker 2: SEC team. Do you feel any kind of, any certain
- 24:56Speaker 2: type of way about the fact that it is an
- 24:58Speaker 2: SEC squad? Is there any, we want to prove to
- 25:01Speaker 2: people that the Big 12 and the SEC are at
- 25:04Speaker 2: least on equal footing here?
- 25:07Speaker 3: I mean, conference-wise, no, but I mean, just us as
- 25:12Speaker 3: a team, our goal is to go undefeated. So this
- 25:16Speaker 3: is the next game that's in our way of doing that.
- 25:20Speaker 3: So this is the game that we just got to
- 25:23Speaker 3: do what we got to do to make sure we're
- 25:25Speaker 3: putting ourselves in the best position to make playoffs.
- 25:27Speaker 2: We've talked about this before with Devin Dampier. QB1 Dishing
- 25:31Speaker 2: with Deb brought to you by Culligan Water, Valley Plumbing, Heating,
- 25:33Speaker 2: and Cooling, and America First Credit Union. A lot of
- 25:37Speaker 2: people are excited this week NFL kicks off. The NFL,
- 25:41Speaker 2: you watch players rather than teams. Yep. Kind of weird.
- 25:47Speaker 2: It's kind of weird you don't have an NFL team.
- 25:51Speaker 3: It's hard because I was born in Minnesota, so I
- 25:55Speaker 3: was somewhat raised around the Vikings. Then I went to Arizona.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Then Kyler Murray came. Then I became a Cardinal fan.
- 26:02Speaker 3: And then you get the Lamars, you get the Mahomes,
- 26:07Speaker 3: you get the Baker Mayfields. I grew up watching Aaron Rodgers,
- 26:11Speaker 3: so it's just like, there's so many different players I
- 26:14Speaker 3: just like, I respect to a level where I'm like,
- 26:18Speaker 3: I can never just pick a team because players motivate
- 26:21Speaker 3: me to watch the game.
- 26:22Speaker 2: I think we got to the bottom of it because...
- 26:25Speaker 2: The Vikings and the Cardinals being the two teams that
- 26:28Speaker 2: you can attach yourself to, two teams that have never
- 26:30Speaker 2: really won anything. So that might be the problem. Hey,
- 26:33Speaker 2: they were solid when they had Randy Moss. Solid. They've
- 26:37Speaker 2: been good. They've been almost there. And AP. The Vikings.
- 26:40Speaker 2: They've been oh so close, the Vikings, many, many, many times. Yeah.
- 26:44Speaker 2: But they've never actually won Super Bowls. So I get it.
- 26:48Speaker 2: And Arizona, you know, that's its own animal. For sure.
- 26:51Speaker 2: I get it. Now I realize why. The team... Team
- 26:55Speaker 2: allegiance has never treated you kindly, so now you're just
- 26:58Speaker 2: attached to players. That's fair. We can go with that.
- 27:02Speaker 2: We can go with that. It's always great having you
- 27:06Speaker 2: come in. I appreciate you giving us time. You're healthy.
- 27:10Speaker 2: You feel good. Everything's right. Just a final message for
- 27:13Speaker 2: Utah fans ahead of an Arkansas game. Rice Eccles, for real,
- 27:17Speaker 2: for real, night game. We expect the atmosphere to be rocking. Yeah, because....
- 27:24Speaker 3: I mean, even other teams say when they play, when
- 27:26Speaker 3: they play a Utah and it's, it's dark outside is,
- 27:29Speaker 3: it's the truth.
- 27:29Speaker 2: So fans bring it. Do you know what the uniform
- 27:32Speaker 2: combination is yet? You get to help pick it, right? Yeah.
- 27:36Speaker 2: It's a, it's a red out, isn't it? Is that
- 27:38Speaker 2: the plan? I'm pretty sure it's, I think it is
- 27:40Speaker 2: the plan. No, you're absolutely right. I think that is
- 27:42Speaker 2: the plan because we were talking about that earlier in the,
- 27:46Speaker 2: in the summer when, when they sent out, like they,
- 27:49Speaker 2: they announced sort of the, the fan schedule or whatever,
- 27:52Speaker 2: like you, I think the red out, cause I was like, that's,
- 27:55Speaker 2: that's how Weddle would want it. And that's his, his day. Yeah. Yeah.
- 27:59Speaker 2: Right out. We should be wearing red. I couldn't imagine
- 28:02Speaker 2: we have red out. Have you, have you talked to
- 28:04Speaker 2: the younger Weddle yet? Have you, have you had any
- 28:06Speaker 2: contact with gauge who of course is being recruited by
- 28:10Speaker 2: everybody in the country? Yeah. Yeah.
- 28:11Speaker 3: Gage made it out to, um, he had his, his
- 28:14Speaker 3: visit through, through us and yeah, he got, he was
- 28:17Speaker 3: able to forget what time period it was, but yeah,
- 28:19Speaker 3: just in our quarterback meeting, he's just, He was chilling.
- 28:22Speaker 2: We all showed up to him, and then he got
- 28:24Speaker 2: to watch us practice. He also plays the quarterback position,
- 28:28Speaker 2: so he probably is watching guys like you because dual
- 28:31Speaker 2: threat for sure. He's an athlete like you are. Yeah, yeah.
- 28:35Speaker 2: I'm excited for Gage. Hopefully we can get him in
- 28:39Speaker 2: a Utah uniform someday. Dev, great seeing you, man. Good luck.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Stay healthy. Have a great game. We'll see you Saturday night.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Appreciate it. Devin Dampier, QB number one, edition with Dev,
- 28:51Speaker 2: brought to you by Culligan Water, Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling,
- 28:55Speaker 2: and America First Credit Union every single week here on
- 28:59Speaker 2: the Sean O'Connell Show.
