- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Well, welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:17Today is the capstone of about two years or so worth of work.
- 0:25We are in Psalm 150 and all of Psalms has now been completed
- 0:31and I am so excited to be able to be in this final portion of
- 0:36Scripture with you today. And if Psalms has been an
- 0:41encouragement to you, I would love to hear in particular if
- 0:45there were any Psalms or any topics or things that were
- 0:49hopeful to you in your walk with the Lord.
- 0:52I know Psalms, even though it's a book about the the praises of
- 0:57God, it delves into all sorts of human emotions like anger and
- 1:04grief, desire for vengeance, praise, worship, joy, family.
- 1:12There's just so many things that Psalms talks about.
- 1:14And so I would love to hear how God, you know, spoke to you even
- 1:20through our time together in the Word.
- 1:24I would also encourage you if you have any specific topics,
- 1:28any aspects of the Christian life that you would like to hear
- 1:34more about, maybe even from the podcast, would love to hear kind
- 1:40of how God's moving and working in and through you and what he
- 1:44might have for us together. But let's read through the six
- 1:48verses and conclude Psalms together.
- 1:52Hallelujah. Praise God in his sanctuary.
- 1:56Praise Him in his mighty expanse.
- 1:59Praise Him for His powerful acts.
- 2:01Praise Him for His abundant greatness.
- 2:05Praise Him with the blast of a ram's horn.
- 2:08Praise Him with harp and lyre. Praise Him with tambourine and
- 2:12dance. Praise Him with strings and
- 2:15flute. Praise Him with resounding
- 2:18symbols. Praise Him with clashing
- 2:20cymbals. Let everything that breathes
- 2:23praise Yahweh. Hallelujah.
- 2:27There have been many great songs over the years that have been
- 2:30written from this portion of Scripture.
- 2:33Probably one of the most famous ones right now is the song
- 2:36Praise by Elevation Worship. And they have kind of a call, a
- 2:43chant bit at the very beginning and I think at the very end of
- 2:47the song where they say, let everything that has breath
- 2:52praise the Lord and they have it.
- 2:54And you know, there's all the instruments and everything that
- 2:57goes. And so it's just a really
- 2:58joyful, joyful time. I've loved the times I've been
- 3:02able to sing it, both with my church family and being out and
- 3:06about at different ministry things and hearing it and
- 3:10rejoicing in that thought that as long as I'm breathing, I have
- 3:14a reason to praise the Lord. And on the day when I take my
- 3:17final breath and I'm no longer breathing, I will be in the
- 3:19presence of the Lord to be able to praise Him perfectly for all
- 3:24eternity. Well, let's look beginning in
- 3:27verses number one and two before we get to kind of the verses
- 3:32section of three through 5 of or not verses section, the
- 3:37instrumental section of verses 3 through 5 and what we're
- 3:43supposed to praise God with or how we're supposed to praise God
- 3:46in verses one and two, we get the location.
- 3:48So if you will, verses 1 and 2, the locations where we praise
- 3:52God as well as why we praise God, then with what do we praise
- 3:58God? And then at the end, who praises
- 4:01God? So you have kind of that four
- 4:03fold structure there. So #1 where do we praise God?
- 4:07Starts off? Praise God in his sanctuary.
- 4:11This is the holy place. This is when we come into God's
- 4:16presence. Now from the children of Israel.
- 4:19This was a literal physical place that you could go, that
- 4:23you could walk into, into the temple, and there you would
- 4:27encounter God's presence in a way unlike anywhere else on
- 4:32earth, that God's Spirit inhabited that place in God's
- 4:36Shekinah glory in a way unlike any other place on earth.
- 4:41And so here there's this call to come and worship, to praise God
- 4:45within this totally unique place.
- 4:49What we have today in churches is not the same thing as these
- 4:56people experienced because we're told in the New Testament where
- 5:00God's presence, his Holy Spirit dwells in a unique place, in a
- 5:05unique time and place, physical location, unlike where He dwells
- 5:11in any other place. And it is not any church
- 5:16building. It is not any room in which
- 5:20preaching or singing or giving takes place, if you will.
- 5:27The there's a lot of words through the years that have been
- 5:30used to describe what the place where the worship of God happens
- 5:37corporately together as the church.
- 5:39Some people have called that room the sanctuary.
- 5:43Some people have called it something like a worship center
- 5:46or an auditorium. It's a place where you hear
- 5:49audio. It's auditory.
- 5:52It's a place to listen. And so people have called it a
- 5:55variety of names. I am going to put forward right
- 5:59now my firm belief that the that room in a church building is not
- 6:08the sanctuary. I use that phrase sometimes in
- 6:13our church to hopefully be accommodating to some
- 6:17individuals that grew up calling it that.
- 6:20That is not the sanctuary. The sanctuary is you and me.
- 6:27It is those of us indwelt by the Holy Spirit of God.
- 6:31God lives in us in a way that He does not live in any room in any
- 6:38building on earth. If you have like respect for the
- 6:43meeting place of the church, if you think that that place should
- 6:47be considered holy and sacred and there's things that you
- 6:50should or shouldn't do within that room, I want to encourage
- 6:53you even more so, way more so than any room in any building,
- 7:00you need to be set apart for the Lord.
- 7:03There are words that you as the sanctuary of God.
- 7:06There are words that you should not say that would not be good.
- 7:09There are places that you should not go because God lives inside
- 7:13of you. There are attitudes and
- 7:16behaviors that you should not adopt, that you should not give
- 7:20a home in your life as a result of the fact that God himself
- 7:24lives in you. So here, praise God in his
- 7:28sanctuary. That's not just talking about,
- 7:31you know, some, some room here at a church.
- 7:35It's talking about you within your life, within your spirit.
- 7:39You need to praise God. Now, let me also state this.
- 7:45When God's people gather together in a particular room or
- 7:50at a particular time, we are together, a body, a temple.
- 7:56Like we're told in first Peter 2 that we are being built together
- 8:00to be a temple of God for his purpose.
- 8:05So value that gathering together don't say, well, God lives in me
- 8:10and so I don't need anyone else. No, God saved you to be part of
- 8:14a body, if you will. You're the pinky and the rest of
- 8:18the body is going to be harmed if you aren't there.
- 8:22I promise you, if I was missing my pinky, I would be searching
- 8:26high and low to chase that thing down and to get my pinky back.
- 8:32And so it is with the body of Christ that we are meant to be
- 8:36together. And when we worship God
- 8:38together, how much greater is the praise that the praise of
- 8:42God coming from? You know, at our church this
- 8:45past Sunday, we had 79 people that were here.
- 8:49We're not a big church. We're not the smallest church.
- 8:51We're just kind of a, if you will, a medium sized church or
- 8:54medium small sized church. But God's praise coming out of
- 8:5879 mouths, or since we've got some babies, God's praise coming
- 9:02out of 70 mouths is greater. There's a greater sound, there
- 9:06is more glory given to God than if just one person all alone
- 9:11were to praise God. Let us praise God together,
- 9:13value what we can do as the sanctuary of God that is being
- 9:18built up together, if you will. The church is a people.
- 9:21It's not a place, but it's not. The church isn't a person.
- 9:25The church is a people. There is a corporate, there is a
- 9:29multiple, multiple people aspect of it.
- 9:33So verse #1 praise God in the sanctuary, praise him in his
- 9:37mighty expanse. That is wherever in all of
- 9:41creation you find yourself, praise God there.
- 9:44If you're at your workplace, praise God there.
- 9:47If you're in your car, praise God there.
- 9:48If you're in the mountains or out fishing, praise God there.
- 9:53When you're enjoying, you know, some food in the city, praise
- 9:58God. While you're there.
- 9:59Wherever you are, you can praise God.
- 10:01Praise God privately, praise Him in spiritual moments.
- 10:06Praise Him when you are sacrificing, when you're
- 10:09worshipping Him. That's a good thing to do.
- 10:12And praise Him everywhere else you are.
- 10:14You can praise Him in His sanctuary and in His mighty
- 10:17expanse. Verse #2 Why do we praise Him?
- 10:20We praise Him for His powerful acts because He has done awesome
- 10:24stuff. He has made the heavens and the
- 10:25earth and everything in them. He has made us His people.
- 10:29He has given us His Word. He has given us Jesus Christ and
- 10:33salvation through Him alone. He has given us a home in heaven
- 10:37and then in His presence forever.
- 10:39He has given us a certain hope and a future.
- 10:42He has given us His Bride, the Church, and He has given us
- 10:46purpose for the here and now and for the forever to glorify God
- 10:51and to lead other people into greater discipleship and
- 10:55relationship with Him. So we praise God for His
- 10:58powerful acts and we praise Him for His abundant greatness, that
- 11:04it's not just what God has done that is great, but who He is
- 11:07like His temperament, His character, His attributes, His
- 11:11love, His kindness, His justice, His grace, His Holiness, even
- 11:17his anger. We can thank him for how great
- 11:20he is in every conceivable way. Yeah, honestly, just read
- 11:26through a bunch of the other Psalms if you want to know.
- 11:28All right, what what's kind of the temperament of God?
- 11:30We've read and sung much about the faithful love of God the has
- 11:36said, and I'm grateful that God is consistent in season after
- 11:42season. What a good thing that that is.
- 11:47So we have that we praise God in his sanctuary.
- 11:51We praise him in his mighty expanse, and then we praise him
- 11:57for his powerful acts with what with what instruments with the
- 12:01blast of a ram's horn. That is, there's a breath that
- 12:05is blown through the instrument that we're able to praise him.
- 12:09We praise him with the harp and with lyre.
- 12:12These are stringed instruments that we pluck with the fingers.
- 12:15We praise him with tambourine and dance.
- 12:17We praise him with rhythm and the moving of our bodies.
- 12:21We praise him with strings and flute.
- 12:24Here another kind of thing, like the ram's horn.
- 12:27At the beginning is a breath instrument, and then at the end
- 12:30the flute is a breath instrument and the harp and the lyre are
- 12:33string instruments. And then then you have praise
- 12:35him with the strings there. And then in verse #5 we praise
- 12:39him with resounding symbols. We praise him with clashing
- 12:44cymbals that these sounds sorry, all of these various things.
- 12:51It's with your breath, with your hands, with your body.
- 12:54Everything about you is called to praise the Lord.
- 12:59And here there's even an indication that God loves
- 13:02instrumental music. And by that I don't mean like
- 13:06just instruments playing all by themselves, though certainly I
- 13:09am absolutely convinced that God loves that as well.
- 13:14He is a creative God. He created everything that
- 13:16exists and in that same same vain, I believe that He loves
- 13:20when we are creative as well. So what do we make of all of
- 13:27these instruments? There is no instrument that, if
- 13:30you will, is shunned from being for the praise of God.
- 13:33Every single instrument ought to be used for the praise of God.
- 13:36Historically, throughout the church you have people that in
- 13:42attempting to be faithful to the Lord, they denounced certain
- 13:48instruments. You even have whole
- 13:49denominations like the Church of Christ that to this day still
- 13:53deny that Christian churches should use any instruments in
- 13:58worship because they would say, well, I don't see any
- 14:01instruments mentioned in the New Testament, and so the church
- 14:05shouldn't use that. Well, friend, God has given us a
- 14:07whole Bible and so he has not, if you will.
- 14:11He didn't RIP out all of the Old Testament and say everything
- 14:15that I said to those people is now no longer applicable for
- 14:19your worship. Instead, at no point did God
- 14:21ever disavow the use of musical instruments in worship.
- 14:25And so may we use instruments for the praise of God.
- 14:29Then if you go back, you know, few 100 years, you had things
- 14:33like the piano or the guitar that because they were more folk
- 14:38instruments as opposed to high like church liturgical
- 14:45instruments, people went, well, you know, pianos are in bars.
- 14:50And so we shouldn't use piano for the praise of God.
- 14:53No, anything that exists, it finds its purpose and its
- 14:58mission for existence within the praise and glory of God.
- 15:03There's nothing that we should be like, hey, you know, at our
- 15:08church we've got a guy that plays the bass.
- 15:10We've got a guy that plays the piano.
- 15:12We've got a guy that plays the drums.
- 15:13I play the guitar. At my church back in Washington,
- 15:17we had a gal that played the flute.
- 15:20We had guy that was able to play the Cajon, which is kind of like
- 15:25a a little one piece box drum thing.
- 15:30They've got, I think even now, maybe a violinist or something.
- 15:35Every instrument, if it can make sound, it should be making sound
- 15:40for God. You can apply this to
- 15:45instruments of communication. So you have social media, you
- 15:52have, you know, radio, you have television, you have whatever
- 15:57else. Anything that exists ought to be
- 16:00used for the praise and worship of God.
- 16:03I know a lot of people right now are really concerned about
- 16:06various AI uses. I would be right there with you.
- 16:10There are a lot of ways that that kind of stuff can go awry,
- 16:13but one of my favorite ways that people have been using AI is to
- 16:19put God's word to music or that they, you know, use it to
- 16:25illustrate Bible scenes. And that is when AI finds its
- 16:31best use is in the praise and exaltation of God.
- 16:36Now, a lot more could be said. Unlike the ethics of using AI
- 16:40for a multiplicity of things, we can certainly have those
- 16:43conversations. Just so you guys know, I will
- 16:46never use AI to like create something.
- 16:51Whenever I've used AI in my life, it has been that I have
- 16:56already created or written something.
- 16:58And so then I'll try to use AI to whittle down what I've
- 17:05written or created or doing something so that it's doing, if
- 17:10you will, fluff work. It's not being used for
- 17:14creation. Instead, I'm just using it like
- 17:18one would use, you know, an editor or something like that to
- 17:22be able to trim down. So everything that exists,
- 17:27including AI, if it's going to have any use at all, it finds
- 17:31its purpose in the praise and exaltation of God.
- 17:37And let's use instruments. Let's learn instruments as long
- 17:41as we are able so that we can praise the Lord in that way.
- 17:45Verse number six, Then the conclusion of all of this.
- 17:48So we saw in verse #1 where do we praise God?
- 17:53Everywhere? Verse #2 why do we praise God?
- 17:57Because of what He has done and because of who He is?
- 18:01Verses 3 through 5, with what do we praise God?
- 18:04With everything that we have, with breath instruments, with
- 18:10stringed instruments that we play with our hands, with our
- 18:14whole bodies, in dance and with tambourine in rhythm, and verse
- 18:196 concludes, Who should praise the Lord?
- 18:23Let everything that breathes praise Yahweh.
- 18:27Hallelujah for every breath that you breathe.
- 18:31You've got a reason to thank the Lord that He has given you
- 18:33another moment, another day to be able to live.
- 18:37And so you have a duty and a responsibility to praise Him.
- 18:41One great way that you can praise Him is I've put some
- 18:45Psalm 150 songs in the show notes and you can listen to
- 18:50those, you can learn those. You will be learning the Word of
- 18:52God, you will be praising Him, you will be obeying the word of
- 18:55God, and you will be fulfilling your reason for existence, which
- 19:00is to bring glory and praise to God.
- 19:04Well, thank you for tuning into this episode.
- 19:07Book 5 of Psalms is complete. Over the next two days, we're
- 19:12going to do something a little bit interesting, little bit
- 19:14out-of-the-box. There are some portions of
- 19:21ancient Hebrew literature that were written in the time between
- 19:27when the Old Testament was completed and before the time of
- 19:31the New Testament. So in about that 2 to 400 year
- 19:34period where believers reflecting on the word of God
- 19:41that they had received in the Old Testament, where they wrote
- 19:45poems based on what they had read in the Old Testament about
- 19:50God, if you will. These are the, you know, the,
- 19:55the Chris Tomlin's or the Brandon Lakes or in a different
- 19:58vein, the Ron Hamilton's or someone of the, or the, you
- 20:04know, Keith and Kristen Getty of the intertestamental period.
- 20:09And so just the next two days I'm going to take two of those
- 20:12poems and go over those together.
- 20:16So the one is labeled Psalm 151. And actually our Greek speaking
- 20:23brothers and sisters in the Lord over the last about 19/18/19
- 20:29hundred years, their collection of Psalms has included Psalm,
- 20:36what's labeled Psalm 151 over that time period.
- 20:40And so they have always had from what was called the Greek
- 20:43Septuagint or the Greek translation of the Hebrew Old
- 20:47Testament, they have had this poem that has been within their
- 20:52Bibles that whole time. And so I want to walk through it
- 20:54with us and if you will, this is something that we can think
- 21:01about. What were people reflecting on
- 21:04the Psalms? What kind of new songs were they
- 21:08writing as a result of what they read in the Word of God?
- 21:11And maybe you might be able to be one that writes poetry or
- 21:14that writes songs. That's been something I've loved
- 21:17doing even within my own life. There's lots of the poems that I
- 21:21don't think anyone will ever like, listen to, hear, see the
- 21:25light of day. But it's always a wonderful
- 21:28thing to be praising the Lord. And so we'll see how that
- 21:32happens. So one of those is something
- 21:35labeled Psalm 151. And then there is one other one
- 21:40and I'd have to look back and see again.
- 21:42It might be the prayer of Manasa is is what it's called, and it
- 21:46is a wonderful thought about how God deals with those that are
- 21:52broken, those that have sinned, and his goodness and kindness
- 21:57towards people who have just hit rock bottom.
- 22:00And so I'm looking forward to diving into those two poems
- 22:03before we make our way next Monday into the New Testament.
- 22:08Thank you for tuning in today. I hope that you have enjoyed
- 22:11Psalms as much as I have. See you next episode.
