Transcript
- 0:04with Alexa. That's right, we are at number 9
- 0:07of this special series titled "Fun Fact About Me, Alexa
- 0:12Polidoro". How narcissist is that?
- 0:16I'm asking you. By then, you must think, "Okay,
- 0:19I've had enough of her. I don't even know who she is."
- 0:22That's fine. As long as you learn something
- 0:26in French, that's what matters to me.
- 0:28Anyway, I'm going to read a short passage on a fact about
- 0:32me. We've heard so far 8 facts about
- 0:36me, and I'm going to teach you some stuff, but tell you the
- 0:44title of this podcast is "Mon film préféré".
- 0:47Now, my favourite film. "Quel est mon film préféré ?"
- 0:54That's not the main question of the text, by the way.
- 0:56We have something else for you. But "quel est mon film préféré
- 1:00?" I'm sure you're going to be
- 1:02surprised and probably not know the film I'm referring to.
- 1:05But it's a film that somehow marked me.
- 1:09I don't know why, when I saw it in the '90s.
- 1:13Why do I like this film so much? Now, I like hundreds of films,
- 1:19hundreds of films are my favourite ones, but this one in
- 1:23French is the one I always go back to.
- 1:25I don't know. I'm sure you have one as well in
- 1:29your language, if it's not English.
- 1:33What is your favourite, the first film that you remember and
- 1:38that marked you, I don't know, and you can remember.
- 1:42Anyway, here's the text. Listen carefully.
- 1:45Écoutez attentivement. Mon film préféré est assez
- 1:50vieux.
- 2:39Now we are in episode number 9. We've gone up a level.
- 2:45It's no longer A1/A2, it's A2/B1 level.
- 2:50Now, because it's A2/B1 level, I would like to focus on something
- 2:58that we cover in lesson 24 of the course.
- 3:02So we are going to cover les pronoms relatifs.
- 3:06Relative pronouns. So we cover, in the complete
- 3:10French course, the direct object pronoun, and then move on to
- 3:15indirect object pronouns, which you will find in lesson 26 of
- 3:18the course. And by the way, we've got 40
- 3:21core lessons attached to a lot and a lot of supplementary
- 3:26lessons and quizzes and support guides and access to live
- 3:32lessons, etc. As a matter of fact, let's
- 3:36listen to our sponsor. If you're enjoying learning
- 3:39French with me and would like to go even further, my certified
- 3:43complete French course brings everything together in one
- 3:47place. You'll have lessons, quizzes,
- 3:50and support guides to help you reach your goals, and it's all
- 3:55taught by me. Use code ALEXAPOD for 15% off.
- 4:00So we've heard from our sponsor. I don't know who they are, but
- 4:04they seem really lovely. Anyways, let me ask you this
- 4:09question: De quelle année date mon film préféré ?
- 4:17From which year? De quelle année date mon film
- 4:23préféré? Is my favourite film, in effect.
- 4:28So this is my first question. My second question, if you have
- 4:33time to listen to this: Pourquoi est-ce que j'aime Fabrice
- 4:37Luchini? Why do I like Fabrice Luchini?
- 4:42Pourquoi est-ce que j'aime Fabrice Luchini ?
- 4:47Now, we are going to stick to these two questions for the
- 4:50second reading. But you can answer just one.
- 4:52It doesn't matter. Nothing is set in stone.
- 4:55You do whatever you want. De quelle année date mon film
- 4:59préféré ? What is the year of the film
- 5:03that I like, the French film? Listen really carefully to the
- 5:07second reading.
- 5:30écrivain. Il est triste et en colère parce
- 5:35que sa petite amie l'a quitté. Alors, il décide de faire
- 5:40quelque chose de cruel pour se venger.
- 5:44L'acteur principal s'appelle Fabrice Luchini.
- 6:02dialogues Okay, guys, we've listened to it twice now.
- 6:07Did you manage to answer: "quelle est la date de mon film
- 6:10préféré ?" Did you hear that?
- 6:12Numbers, let alone for me in English, are hard, but if you're
- 6:18learning French, getting numbers in text or audio is really hard.
- 6:24Now here, this film dates from mille neuf cent
- 6:28quatre-vingt-dix, ou dix-neuf cent quatre-vingt-dix, I could
- 6:31have said. So "l'année, la date de mon film
- 6:37préféré, c'est mille neuf cent quatre-vingt-dix". 1990, not
- 6:431919. Sorry, 1990, quatre-vingt-dix.
- 6:46Okay. Now remember that when we do
- 6:50numbers in French, from 70 upwards, 60 is soixante, but 70
- 6:55is 60 ten, so soixante-dix. And 80 is four 20, so
- 7:00quatre-vingt. And 90 is four 20 ten, so
- 7:04quatre-vingt-dix. Okay, you've got to do maths in
- 7:06French. Seriously.
- 7:07And so you can imagine 99, quatre-vingt-dix-neuf.
- 7:12So that will be four 20s plus 10 plus nine.
- 7:17Yeah, I know, quatre-vingt-dix-neuf.
- 7:20In that case, we have "mille neuf cent quatre-vingt-dix", the
- 7:23date of the film. It's very old, 36 years old.
- 7:29Ce film a 36 ans. But I was young then.
- 7:33I was 19 when I watched it, so that tells you my age.
- 7:38Ooh là là. I was old.
- 7:41No, I was not old, sorry. I was young.
- 7:44That's what I mean. So I wonder why the story
- 7:48appealed to me. Now, I'm going to read it a
- 7:53third time, okay? And I'll tell you what the story
- 7:56is about, unless you want to watch it.
- 7:59Maybe you watch it. Okay.
- 8:01So, I'll tell you a little bit about the film then, and I'll
- 8:05let you watch it, okay? By the way, the title "La
- 8:10Discrète" means "the discreet," as in the discreet girl, okay?
- 8:15But it has nothing to do with the fact that the girl is
- 8:20discreet. It has all to do with the place
- 8:24the beauty spot was placed on someone's face.
- 8:29So let me go back here. "La discrète" is the name of a
- 8:33beauty spot. The beauty spot that back in
- 8:38time, let's say the 18th century, potentially early 18th
- 8:42century, maybe late 18th century, I don't know.
- 8:49People, as a beauty, just like we put lipsticks nowadays or
- 8:53whatever, used to place a beauty spot on their face.
- 8:58And depending on where that beauty spot was placed, it was
- 9:03giving a message to people. So "la discrète" would have been
- 9:08here. I don't know if you see here
- 9:11where I'm pointing, if you're listening to it, I'm pointing at
- 9:14the top of my cheek here. Okay.
- 9:16And that would have been a place which meant "discrète".
- 9:20I am discreet. And wherever it was placed
- 9:23throughout your face and even on the top of your chest as well,
- 9:28was a message. Right.
- 9:31So my second question was: pourquoi est-ce que j'aime
- 9:35Fabrice Luchini ? Now, Fabrice Luchini is our
- 9:38national treasure in France. Everybody knows Fabrice Luchini.
- 9:43Well, at least my generation. I'm not sure about the young
- 9:47ones. But he's been in so many films,
- 9:49and I think originally, he fell into acting completely by
- 9:55accident, I think. He originally was a hairdresser,
- 9:59I think. I want to say something like
- 10:01that, but you can Google him anyway.
- 10:03But I don't think it was what he was meant to do, and the thing
- 10:10is, we discovered that this actor could do all kind, even a
- 10:16very complex text. He can deliver a Molière text,
- 10:20the equivalent of Shakespeare in the UK.
- 10:23He can deliver a text such as Molière without any problems and
- 10:30giving it life. And this is what's amazing about
- 10:33Fabrice Luchini, is that he's a very versatile actor.
- 10:37Anyway: pourquoi est-ce que j'aime Fabrice Luchini ?
- 10:41Why do I like Fabrice Luchini? Parce que il joue très bien.
- 10:47Je l'adore. I love him.
- 10:50L'adore. L apostrophe here is a direct
- 10:53object to "adore". So, donc je l'adore.
- 10:56Okay. Car il joue très bien.
- 10:59Because he plays really well. I think he's an amazing actor.
- 11:07He's often very funny in the films that he makes.
- 11:12That he makes. Here, We have "que il fait".
- 11:17Okay, you've got a pronom relatif "que".
- 11:20We've got two. We've got "que" and "qui".
- 11:23So what I want to do here, we've read it twice, so I want to read
- 11:26it again, and then read it again when translating it, and
- 11:32pointing out the indirect object pronouns and the direct object
- 11:36pronouns and the relative pronouns, the "qui" and the
- 11:39"que". Now, mon film préféré est assez
- 11:45vieux.
- 12:12L'acteur principal s'appelle Fabrice Luchini.
- 12:30dialogues. So I could have asked you: Why
- 12:34do I love this film so much ? C'est qu'il y a une morale très
- 12:39claire à cette histoire. There is a very clear moral to
- 12:43this story. Mais c'est aussi l'intelligence
- 12:46des dialogues. But it's also how intelligent
- 12:49the dialogues are. It's clever.
- 12:52The story is really clever. It's all about vengeance, but
- 12:59getting stung by it at the same time.
- 13:04And it hurts. And I think that's why I love
- 13:07that film so much, but I'll let you discover it.
- 13:11But it's how the plan of a man doesn't end up the way he
- 13:17planned it. And on the contrary, it bites
- 13:21you back. But watch it and you'll
- 13:25understand. Let's have a look at the text.
- 13:28And in the meantime, you could say what is your favourite film
- 13:32? Quel est votre film préféré ?
- 13:35I know that there would be categories.
- 13:51Etc. You could tell me, couldn't you
- 13:54? So leave that in the comments.
- 13:55And of course, my favourite film of all time, as in all together
- 14:01internationally, is "The Wings of Desire" by Wim Wenders.
- 14:05I'm a big fan of Wim Wenders. Anyway.
- 14:10Here is the last reading with translation.
- 14:13Mon film préféré est assez vieux.
- 14:16My favourite film is quite old. Assez vieux.
- 14:22"Assez" means quite. Assez vieux.
- 14:25Now have a look at "mon film préféré".
- 14:28Now the order is my favourite film.
- 14:30Do you see the order of that? My favourite film.
- 14:35So in French, we have "mon" and then "film préféré".
- 14:39So it's my film preferred. It's quite old.
- 14:43Il s'intitule "La Discrète". I could have said : ça s'appelle
- 14:47"La Discrète" or it's called "La Discrète".
- 14:52C'est un film français. It is a French film.
- 14:57Du réalisateur Christian Vincent.
- 15:00It is a French film from the director Christian Vincent.
- 15:04Sorti en 1990. Which came out or released in
- 15:15It is a story of a man who is called Antoine and who is a
- 15:23writer. Qui s'appelle Antoine et qui est
- 15:30écrivain. Now, I would like you to have a
- 15:35look at lessons 24 and 26 of the French course.
- 15:40And if you haven't bought the course, look at the outline as
- 15:44well, the French course outline, and that gives you an insight of
- 15:48how we cover these direct object pronouns and indirect object
- 15:52pronouns and relative pronouns as well.
- 15:57So here, un homme qui s'appelle, a man who is called Antoine and
- 16:03who is a writer. And I cover the difference
- 16:07between "que" and "qui". Whereby "que" is followed by a
- 16:15subject. As for "qui", it's followed by a
- 16:18verb, such as qui s'appelle and qui est écrivain.
- 16:28Now, he's sad and angry because his girlfriend, sa petite amie,
- 16:36left him. Here, the direct object pronoun
- 16:41has been put in front of the auxiliary "a", as in "a quitté",
- 16:46has left. This is a passé composé.
- 16:56So he decides to do something cruel to get his revenge.
- 17:01So "se venger": il se venge. That's a reflexive verb.
- 17:07Je me venge. Il se venge.
- 17:12Nous nous vengeons, etc. Now, what cruel thing can he do
- 17:19to have revenge ? But I invite you to watch « La
- 17:24Discrète ». It's a great story.
- 17:28Now, l'acteur principal s'appelle Fabrice Luchini.
- 17:33The main actor is called Fabrice Luchini.
- 17:36Je l'adore. I love him.
- 17:40Je l'adore, car il joue très bien.
- 17:42Because he plays really well. Now, again, we can't say I like
- 17:47him or I love him. We would say I him love.
- 17:51Je l'adore. L apostrophe + adorer.
- 17:54Car il joue très bien. Because he plays really well.
- 17:57He's a good actor. Il est souvent très drôle dans
- 18:01les films qu'il fait. He's often very funny in the
- 18:05films that he makes. Now here, Q U apostrophe would
- 18:08be "que" if we didn't have the apostrophe.
- 18:11So "que il fait" as opposed to "qui il fait".
- 18:15Now remember that "qui" is always followed by a verb, and
- 18:22here, "que" is always followed by a pronoun, or the subject of
- 18:27the sentence that follows. Now, I cover this in great
- 18:32details in live lessons, in my course, and you can check the
- 18:36course outline. This time, I don't want to force
- 18:39you to do something you don't want to do.
- 18:41Unless I hypnotise you. Listen to my voice.
- 18:46Listen to my voice. Now, after three, you're going
- 18:51to go into learnfrenchwithalexa.com, and
- 18:54you are going to buy my course. Three.
- 18:59No, one. I said three, two, one.
- 19:02I said after three. One, two, three.
- 19:08You are hypnotised. Maybe that's the new job I
- 19:15should do, or ASMR. ASMR. Anyways, let's carry on because
- 19:20my ADHD brain is going off on a tangent, which doesn't help.
- 19:28Anyway.
- 19:31I love in this film. Ce que, what.
- 19:35It's funny that "ce qui" and "ce que" as well.
- 19:38If you wanted to start a sentence by what I like about
- 19:42you, you would start by "ce que j'aime".
- 19:46Okay? And again, "ce que" is followed
- 19:50by a pronoun. Okay?
- 19:52Ce que j'aime, what I like. But if you wanted to say what is
- 20:00beautiful about it, you would say "ce qui est", and then "qui"
- 20:04followed by a verb. Okay?
- 20:06Ce qui est beau dans ce film, and so on.
- 20:09So a difference between "ce que" and "ce qui".
- 20:11But replaced in English by what. What I like about it, what is
- 20:15nice about it, and so on. Ce qu'il y a, it is that there
- 20:20is. Il y a une morale très claire.
- 20:22There is a very clear message, morale, à cette histoire, to
- 20:27this story. Mais c'est aussi l'intelligence
- 20:30des dialogues. So it's not only the very clear
- 20:34message, but it's also the intelligence of the dialogues.
- 20:38Okay? The dialogues' intelligence.
- 20:41So that's, of course, my opinion.
- 20:43So I could ask you something. Et vous, c'est quoi votre film
- 20:47préféré ? What is your favourite film?
- 20:51Quel est votre film préféré ? Please leave a comment, and I
- 20:56will endeavour to read your comment and answer.
- 21:00So we've read this four times. We have translated it once at
- 21:03the end, and we focused on direct object pronouns, indirect
- 21:07object pronouns, and relative pronouns.
- 21:09Okay? Now, this text is level A2/B1.
- 21:15Okay? We've got three more to go, and
- 21:18they are going to get slightly more difficult.
- 21:20Just a little bit. A tint more difficult.
- 21:24Okay? And again, if you're not
- 21:28familiar with any grammar points that I make, have a look at the
- 21:33course, have a look at the free YouTube resources that we have
- 21:37on the channel, Learn French with Alexa.
- 21:41That's it for me. Au revoir.
- 21:43À bientôt. Bisou, bisou.
