• 2:51
Speaker 5: it's danny jones good morning sir welcome to the show
• 2:54
Speaker 5: good morning how are things in california my.
• 2:57
Speaker 6: Friend they're fine they're fine um You know, I was
• 3:01
Speaker 6: listening to some videos this morning, and you can always
• 3:05
Speaker 6: tell there's AI when they say Nigeria instead of Nigeria.
• 3:12
Speaker 6: And they say Al-Qaeda instead of Al-Qaeda.
• 3:17
  Speaker 2: Yes.
• 3:17
Speaker 5: It is amazing to me, Danny, and I am not
• 3:21
Speaker 5: a smart guy by any stretch of the imagination, okay?
• 3:24
Speaker 5: Listeners to the show know that. But it's amazing to
• 3:27
Speaker 5: me the number of people that cannot tell AI from
• 3:31
Speaker 5: real stuff. Now, some of the stuff is a little
• 3:33
Speaker 5: hard to tell, but some of it is just so
• 3:34
Speaker 5: blatantly obvious that you see, especially in graphics and things
• 3:39
Speaker 5: of that nature. It's like, how can you possibly think
• 3:42
Speaker 5: that this is real?
• 3:45
Speaker 6: Yeah, and the way we pronounce people's names and all
• 3:48
Speaker 6: kinds of stuff. For me, it's pretty easy to tell.
• 3:53
  Speaker 6: And now.
• 3:55
Speaker 6: You know, cause I buy books, audio books, now all the,
• 3:59
Speaker 6: instead of the authors doing them, now they're all being
• 4:02
  Speaker 6: done by, uh.
• 4:04
Speaker 5: See now I wonder though, um, what, I mean, I
• 4:08
Speaker 5: guess I can understand both, both ways. I mean, I
• 4:12
Speaker 5: can tell you that if, if I were to ever
• 4:13
Speaker 5: do a book, which I'm not going to do, but
• 4:15
Speaker 5: if I were ever going to do it, I'd probably
• 4:17
Speaker 5: want to voice it myself. I mean, if I was still,
• 4:19
Speaker 5: you know, alive and able to do what that is,
• 4:21
Speaker 5: I don't really want AI doing it now. Of course,
• 4:23
Speaker 5: you've written a book, and we're hoping that we can
• 4:26
Speaker 5: get that in an audiobook form at some point, but
• 4:28
Speaker 5: you need to do your own book. You need to
• 4:30
  Speaker 5: narrate it yourself.
• 4:32
Speaker 6: Yeah, but how would I do that since Charlie's written
• 4:36
Speaker 6: part of it talking about me, and then I did
• 4:42
Speaker 6: some of my own narration? It would be hard.
• 4:45
Speaker 5: I mean, Jake Tapper did the book.
• 4:53
Speaker 6: Original thing about, you know, Biden running when he shouldn't have.
• 4:59
Speaker 6: And he would refer to himself as Jake. Right. And
• 5:04
Speaker 6: it just seemed odd.
• 5:05
Speaker 5: I could see that, but I mean, with the way
• 5:07
Speaker 5: that you and Charlie Ryan did the book, could you
• 5:09
Speaker 5: not do, like, just have him do his part and
• 5:11
Speaker 5: then you do your part?
• 5:15
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 5:15
Speaker 6: Well, I'll have to think about that. I'm not sure
• 5:21
Speaker 6: if I'm not sure Charlie wants to be burdened with that.
• 5:24
Speaker 5: I got you. I got you. So what is the
• 5:26
Speaker 5: latest on the book? I mean, of course, the book,
• 5:27
Speaker 5: you know, it's been out for several months now. And,
• 5:30
Speaker 5: I mean, do we have more copies coming? I mean,
• 5:32
Speaker 5: we haven't talked about the book in a while.
• 5:34
Speaker 6: You can buy them on Amazon. I think they have
• 5:37
Speaker 6: them in a few stores around Charleston, down at the
• 5:41
Speaker 6: Capital Market. And I think they have a copy or
• 5:46
Speaker 6: two down at Taylor's. And they have.
• 5:51
Speaker 6: Up on the hill of eggplant. So, I mean, I
• 5:56
Speaker 6: think it's had its flourish, you know. It's had its run,
• 6:01
Speaker 6: but you can still get a copy of it.
• 6:03
Speaker 5: Time to start working on the second one, which you
• 6:05
Speaker 5: said you were already working on.
• 6:07
Speaker 6: Well, I've already written something, but it would be so dark.
• 6:11
Speaker 6: It would be such a darker version of... It'd be...
• 6:19
Speaker 6: It'd be the whole church.
• 6:22
Speaker 5: Talking again with Charleston Mayor Danny Jones. All right, so
• 6:25
Speaker 5: I want to throw this out here. My wife and
• 6:26
Speaker 5: I took a brief mini vacation down to Virginia Beach.
• 6:30
Speaker 5: We left early Thursday morning, got back yesterday. Got down
• 6:33
Speaker 5: there and got sick, by the way, Danny. I would
• 6:35
Speaker 5: not recommend being sick at the beach, I'll just tell
• 6:37
Speaker 5: you that. But I was able to, you know, recover.
• 6:40
Speaker 5: One of the things I noticed is something very interesting
• 6:44
Speaker 5: down there. Of course, you know, it's election season all
• 6:47
Speaker 5: across America, midterms going on, pretty hot congressional races down
• 6:51
Speaker 5: there in Virginia. There were a lot of commercials, as
• 6:55
Speaker 5: you would expect, just like in West Virginia. You know,
• 6:57
Speaker 5: you'll see we haven't really seen him, you know, this
• 7:00
Speaker 5: this time around, but we've seen him in the past
• 7:01
Speaker 5: with a lot of, you know, a lot of packs
• 7:04
Speaker 5: and things of that nature. Here's the interesting thing to me.
• 7:08
Speaker 5: The way that some of the ads were featuring President
• 7:12
Speaker 5: Trump in a negative light. Now, you know how in
• 7:16
Speaker 5: West Virginia, a Republican might say, a vote for fill-in
• 7:22
Speaker 5: name here for my opponent is a vote for Joe
• 7:25
Speaker 5: Biden or Kamala Harris or Bernie or AOC. You get that.
• 7:28
Speaker 5: Down there, one race that I was particularly watching the
• 7:32
Speaker 5: commercials for, because they were every other commercial, if you
• 7:35
Speaker 5: tried to watch the news or whatever, they were they
• 7:40
Speaker 5: were using President Trump in a very negative light. So
• 7:43
Speaker 5: the Democrat was saying a vote for fill-in name here
• 7:46
Speaker 5: is just another rubber stamp for Donald Trump. And I
• 7:50
Speaker 5: just thought to myself, you would never in a million
• 7:52
Speaker 5: years see that in West Virginia.
• 7:54
Speaker 6: Oh, you're seeing it all over the country. He's down in,
• 8:00
Speaker 6: he's almost in Nixon territory, whole wise. And can you
• 8:06
Speaker 6: tell me, or can you remember, was that two ladies?
• 8:09
  Speaker 4: Yes.
• 8:10
  Speaker 6: Um, yeah.
• 8:11
Speaker 5: And I actually, go ahead.
• 8:13
  Speaker 6: Gloria.
• 8:14
  Speaker 5: Gloria was one.
• 8:15
Speaker 6: Um, yeah. She, she, she had the theme and then
• 8:19
Speaker 6: she lost it and she's going to get back.
• 8:22
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 8:23
Speaker 6: But I mean, I just, it.
• 8:24
Speaker 5: Just kind of, I guess took me because I mean,
• 8:27
Speaker 5: you know, how you see, and we've all seen those commercials, Danny, where,
• 8:30
Speaker 5: you know, um, it's a very, very serious sounding voice
• 8:33
Speaker 5: like this, you know, we can't stand more of whatever.
• 8:36
Speaker 5: And in the background of this one commercial was a
• 8:38
Speaker 5: shadow of Donald Trump. And it's shown in a negative light.
• 8:42
Speaker 5: In West Virginia, our Republicans can't trump up enough, you know?
• 8:46
Speaker 6: Yeah, but that's about three states. Idaho, Wyoming, and West Virginia,
• 8:57
Speaker 6: and that's about it. Yeah, yeah.
• 8:59
Speaker 5: I just thought it was interesting. I mean, I guess,
• 9:02
Speaker 5: you know, how the times have changed because, look, This
• 9:04
Speaker 5: time a few years ago, it may have been the
• 9:06
Speaker 5: same in those states as what it is here, but
• 9:07
Speaker 5: not now. I mean, the president now, and this is
• 9:10
Speaker 5: not Trump derangement syndrome. This is I'm just saying this
• 9:13
Speaker 5: is what it is, has got historically low approval ratings,
• 9:17
Speaker 5: particularly among independents. That's what gets me. I mean, the
• 9:21
Speaker 5: Democrats are going to hate Donald Trump. We get that. Republicans,
• 9:25
Speaker 5: for the most part, are going to love him. but
• 9:28
Speaker 5: amongst independents, which are very important and have been very
• 9:31
Speaker 5: important to the Republican platform in the past, not important
• 9:33
Speaker 5: enough for West Virginia to let him vote in the primary,
• 9:36
Speaker 5: but he's very, very unpopular among independents now.
• 9:41
Speaker 6: Well, if you're a truck driver and you get diesel
• 9:45
Speaker 6: in your car and you're a Republican, you're not going
• 9:49
Speaker 6: to love Trump because the price of diesel fuel has
• 9:54
Speaker 6: gone up so dramatically. And I mean, out here, it's
• 10:00
  Speaker 6: just completely, I rented a car. I mean, I'll save
• 10:04
Speaker 6: money because I rented a car, because the price of
• 10:07
Speaker 6: gas is so high, and I don't want to have
• 10:10
Speaker 6: to put gas in that Cadillac.
• 10:12
Speaker 5: How many miles a gallon does that Cadillac get?
• 10:16
Speaker 6: Oh, not as bad as you'd think, probably about 10.
• 10:21
  Speaker 5: Okay. About 10.
• 10:22
Speaker 6: Well, it could be worse. It could be. It could be.
• 10:25
Speaker 5: It could be. It could be. But, I mean, that
• 10:27
Speaker 5: just goes to show you how high gas prices are,
• 10:31
Speaker 5: that it's cheaper for you to leave the Caddy parked
• 10:33
Speaker 5: and to rent a car if you have to go somewhere.
• 10:35
Speaker 6: Yeah. And I've driven the Cadillac twice, but I have
• 10:40
Speaker 6: a rental car this time, and I actually had an
• 10:46
Speaker 6: offer on the car yesterday. Oh, really?
• 10:48
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 10:49
Speaker 6: Yeah, but, which, you know, I'll sell anything.
• 10:55
Speaker 5: And this is why I love you, Danny. I'm completely
• 10:58
  Speaker 5: the same way.
• 10:58
  Speaker 2: Whatever.
• 10:59
Speaker 5: Make me an offer. Be like my brother-in-law. My brother-in-law
• 11:03
Speaker 5: is into cars, and, you know, he goes down to
• 11:06
Speaker 5: the rod run thing that they do in Pigeon Forge
• 11:09
Speaker 5: every year. He gets down there. It's a true story.
• 11:13
Speaker 5: He gets down there, and he sells his car because
• 11:15
Speaker 5: somebody made him an offer he couldn't refuse with cash,
• 11:17
Speaker 5: so he sold it. And then he walked around looking
• 11:21
Speaker 5: for plates, West Virginia plates, so he could get a
• 11:24
Speaker 5: ride back to West Virginia because he said, I wasn't
• 11:27
Speaker 5: going to turn down that offer if I had to
• 11:28
Speaker 5: hitchhike back. This was only a couple of years ago. Okay.
• 11:31
Speaker 5: So that's the way we are in West Virginia. Hey, Danny,
• 11:34
Speaker 5: I got to take, I got to take a break.
• 11:36
Speaker 5: Can you hang out with me during the break? Cause
• 11:37
Speaker 5: I got a couple other things I want to talk
• 11:39
  Speaker 5: to you about.
• 11:39
  Speaker 8: Sure.
• 11:40
  Speaker 9: All right.
• 11:41
Speaker 5: We'll be back with more after this on the voice
• 11:43

Speaker 5: to people in California, Danny, what's the pulse of what
• 14:42
Speaker 5: they are expecting nationwide from the midterms?
• 14:45
Speaker 6: We don't go there.
• 14:47
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 14:47
  Speaker 5: At all?
• 14:48
Speaker 6: Nobody. And I mean nobody. I don't talk politics.
• 14:52
Speaker 5: Okay, all right. Let's say if you're listening to talk
• 14:55
Speaker 5: radio like this one, you're watching television or reading the paper.
• 15:00
Speaker 5: What's the take out there?
• 15:02
Speaker 6: Well, you know Bill Handel. You know who he is, right?
• 15:06
Speaker 6: He has a morning show out here. And it's anti-Trump. Now,
• 15:13
Speaker 6: if you go over to 870, where they have Officer Tatum...
• 15:19
Speaker 6: And Dennis Prager, and I'm not sure if Larry Elder's
• 15:23
Speaker 6: back over there or not, but 8.70 a.m. the answer
• 15:28
Speaker 6: is the conservative station. And they would be all Trump
• 15:35
Speaker 6: all the time. It's funny. I don't talk about politics.
• 15:41
Speaker 6: I just don't. But the signs in the complex here
• 15:45
Speaker 6: are all Democrat signs.
• 15:47
  Speaker 12: Mm-hmm.
• 15:48
Speaker 6: They have a Republican club, but I don't know where
• 15:51
Speaker 6: they meet because there couldn't be too many of them.
• 15:57
Speaker 6: Let me tell you something that's going on. You know,
• 16:00
Speaker 6: they took the money out of North Carolina after spending
• 16:04
Speaker 6: $ 30 million on Houston. They took the money and shifted
• 16:10
Speaker 6: it to Kansas of all places. I don't think Kansas
• 16:14
Speaker 6: has had a Republican senator, Democrat senator since 1910. I mean,
• 16:21
Speaker 6: and that they're worried about Kansas. And that's how bad
• 16:25
Speaker 6: this is. And Trump is so it reminds me of 1974.
• 16:30
Speaker 6: And then, of course, 2008. when Obama got elected and
• 16:39
  Speaker 6: had 60 Republicans, 58 Democrat senators, I think it's going
• 16:46
Speaker 6: to be a blowout. The only thing that might save
• 16:48
Speaker 6: the Republicans are the gerrymandering that they've been able to
• 16:52
Speaker 6: do that might help them.
• 16:55
Speaker 5: I mean, is there any, and you follow this stuff
• 16:57
Speaker 5: even a lot more closely than what I do, Danny,
• 16:59
Speaker 5: is there any reason to believe we are getting anywhere
• 17:02
Speaker 5: in Iran? I mean, You know, you and I were
• 17:04
Speaker 5: on the same page on Iran. A world without Iran
• 17:08
Speaker 5: having a nuclear weapon is a better thing. We all
• 17:11
Speaker 5: get that. But I don't think this thing, and I'm
• 17:13
Speaker 5: not a military strategist by any stretch of the imagination,
• 17:15
Speaker 5: but I don't think this thing is going at least
• 17:18
Speaker 5: the way we've been playing, the way that we thought
• 17:19
Speaker 5: we would. Are you seeing we're making any headway here
• 17:23
  Speaker 5: at all?
• 17:24
Speaker 6: Well, I don't know. See, initially, I thought it was
• 17:28
  Speaker 6: a good idea. What I didn't understand was they don't
• 17:33
Speaker 6: have a plan. They never they never went into this
• 17:36
Speaker 6: with any kind of planning, never any beginning or end
• 17:41
Speaker 6: or anything like that. And and you've gone from 2017
• 17:49
Speaker 6: when you had General Mattis to today where you've got
• 17:53
Speaker 6: Pete Hegseth. And I'm not sure he knows what he's doing.
• 18:00
Speaker 6: It's really sad. He's Trump's big failure as an administrator,
• 18:07
Speaker 6: he wants to surround himself with people that tell him
• 18:11
Speaker 6: what he wants to hear instead of what he needs
• 18:14
  Speaker 6: to hear.
• 18:15
Speaker 5: And that's a recipe for disaster no matter where you are,
• 18:19
Speaker 5: whether you're in the coaching ranks or whether you're in
• 18:20
Speaker 5: a Fortune 500 company or the local grocery store. That
• 18:23
Speaker 5: doesn't work. You can't surround yourself with nothing but yes-men
• 18:26
Speaker 5: because occasionally the boss is going to be wrong, Danny.
• 18:29
  Speaker 5: You know that.
• 18:30
Speaker 6: Well, and in his case, it's more than occasionally. But
• 18:35
Speaker 6: there's nobody that can go to him and say no.
• 18:39
Speaker 6: And the Republicans, with the exception of Murkowski and Collins
• 18:49
Speaker 6: and maybe one other, they voted against Texas. And it
• 18:55
Speaker 6: took J.D. Vance to break the tie. All right. I mean,
• 19:00
Speaker 6: he should never, ever have been there. But that's not who,
• 19:05
Speaker 6: that's not the way Trump thinks. He wants to, he
• 19:09
Speaker 6: wanted somebody to go down there and take General Milley's
• 19:12
Speaker 6: picture off the wall and do all kinds of stupid things.
• 19:17
Speaker 5: We're talking again with Danny Jones, 927. The Dave Allen
• 19:20
Speaker 5: Show on 580 Live is brought to you in part
• 19:22
Speaker 5: by Huston's Pizza. This month at Huston's, get a large
• 19:24

• 19:32
  Speaker 12: T.J.
• 19:32
Speaker 5: Meadows, Danny, has got a really interesting commentary today. He's
• 19:35
Speaker 5: going to talk about it, of course, on TalkLine. He'll
• 19:38
Speaker 5: join us on midday, and I'll get him on the
• 19:39
Speaker 5: end of this show probably as well. I don't know
• 19:41
Speaker 5: if you had a chance to read it, but there
• 19:42
Speaker 5: was an article in the Wall Street Journal talking about
• 19:46
Speaker 5: law enforcement agencies around the country basically serving as as
• 19:50
Speaker 5: bounty hunters for picking up illegal aliens. Now, they interviewed
• 19:54
Speaker 5: the sheriff of Doddridge County in West Virginia, who said
• 20:00
Speaker 5: that his department was part of it and had rounded
• 20:02
Speaker 5: up a total in Doddridge County, a total of two
• 20:05
Speaker 5: illegals and picked up some cash along the way. This
• 20:09
Speaker 5: apparently is a big issue, the Trump administration offering bounties
• 20:13
Speaker 5: for people, law enforcement, for doing their job for, I guess,
• 20:15
Speaker 5: picking up, detaining illegal aliens. Are you aware of any
• 20:18
Speaker 5: of this, or do you have a thought on any
• 20:20
  Speaker 5: of this?
• 20:20
Speaker 6: I read about it in the journal, but my question is,
• 20:25
Speaker 6: who gets the money? The Sheriff's Department?
• 20:28
  Speaker 5: I'm assuming, yes, it's the Sheriff's Department. I talked to
• 20:30
Speaker 5: TJ about it, but basically in his commentary that I
• 20:33
Speaker 5: actually heard on the radio this morning, you can read
• 20:35
Speaker 5: it at wvmetronews.com. The actual agency gets not like an individual.
• 20:39
Speaker 5: It's like it goes for equipment and things of that nature.
• 20:41
Speaker 5: It goes back into the coffers of the sheriff's department.
• 20:45
Speaker 6: Yeah. I'm sorry. You lose me on this one. Now,
• 20:52
Speaker 6: I can see where if you had a guy in
• 20:54
Speaker 6: jail and he was illegal, that you call ICE and
• 20:59
Speaker 6: have ICE come pick him up. That's legitimate.
• 21:03
  Speaker 5: Right, yeah, 100%.
• 21:04
Speaker 6: But for them to be taking away their time from
• 21:10
Speaker 6: normal duties of the sheriff or the city police to
• 21:19
Speaker 6: engage in activities that belong to ICE, I'm out.
• 21:26
Speaker 5: Well, and I think if you try to put yourself
• 21:29
Speaker 5: in the sheriff's perspective here, and they actually, I talked
• 21:32
Speaker 5: to TJ earlier, they were trying to get him to
• 21:34
Speaker 5: agree to come on talk line. I don't think he's
• 21:36
Speaker 5: going to do so. But, you know, in his defense,
• 21:39
Speaker 5: he probably sees this as the way, look, we're a
• 21:40
Speaker 5: struggling sheriff's department. We need the money. We're going to
• 21:43
Speaker 5: do what we can do. I mean, and I get that.
• 21:45
Speaker 5: It's not like personal gain. It all goes back to
• 21:47
Speaker 5: the department. But again, I'm kind of like you and
• 21:51
Speaker 5: TJ on this one, Danny. I mean, I got a little,
• 21:54
Speaker 5: this gives me a little bit of pause, to be
• 21:55
  Speaker 5: honest with you.
• 21:57
Speaker 6: Well, the county commission determined the budget for the sheriff's department. Now,
• 22:05
Speaker 6: what if they see the sheriff getting all this money
• 22:07
Speaker 6: and say, well, okay, you're not going to need this
• 22:10
Speaker 6: amount of money. We're going to use this to do
• 22:12
Speaker 6: a sewer project. And I just think it's a recipe for,
• 22:20
Speaker 6: I don't like it. But let me tell you one
• 22:22
Speaker 6: thing that happened when I was mayor. You know, they
• 22:26
Speaker 6: had a lot of them. surplus military stuff that they
• 22:32
Speaker 6: were given to local police departments. I'm talking tanks, personnel carriers,
• 22:41
Speaker 6: all kinds of stuff. And it was brought to my attention,
• 22:45
Speaker 6: and I said, absolutely not. We are not a military outfit,
• 22:50
Speaker 6: but you'd be surprised how many departments around the country
• 22:56
Speaker 6: that have military, that are militarized. And that's just not
• 23:02
Speaker 6: the way I look at modern-day policing.
• 23:07
Speaker 5: Talking again with Danny Jones, the Dave Allen Show on
• 23:09
Speaker 5: 580 Live brought to you by the Charleston Dirty Birds.
• 23:11
Speaker 5: Go Mart Ballpark being transformed into an outdoor movie theater
• 23:14
Speaker 5: Friday night for a Halloween double feature, which is, excuse me,
• 23:18
Speaker 5: I'm struggling here, Danny. Sponsored by the Arc of the
• 23:21
Speaker 5: Three Rivers. You can come check out Hocus Pocus, followed
• 23:24
Speaker 5: by The Addams Family, starting at 7. For details, visit DirtyBirdsBaseball.com.
• 23:29
Speaker 6: Hey, I saw a movie out here, if we have
• 23:31
  Speaker 6: a minute.
• 23:32
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 23:33
Speaker 6: That people may or may not be interested in. It's
• 23:37
Speaker 6: pretty dark. It's called Primetime, by John Stoffel. And that's
• 23:44
Speaker 6: to catch a predator. Mm-hmm. And it's does not think
• 23:49
Speaker 6: docile in a good light. In what way? Every way.
• 23:56
Speaker 6: First thing, he was going out on his wife. There
• 24:02
Speaker 6: was one episode in 2004 or 2005 where they were
• 24:08
Speaker 6: getting ready to close in with a tank on a
• 24:11
Speaker 6: Texas prosecutor. And he stood in the window and blew
• 24:16
Speaker 6: his brains out. And they never saw. That one was
• 24:23
  Speaker 6: never featured.
• 24:24
  Speaker 5: Oh, sure. Yeah.
• 24:25
Speaker 6: But it was a year or two later where they
• 24:30
Speaker 6: put him, you know, they stopped his show. Now, I
• 24:35
Speaker 6: was watching the guy at the keyboard pretending to be
• 24:41
Speaker 6: a young boy. And he was flirting with this guy.
• 24:47
  Speaker 3: You know?
• 24:49
Speaker 6: And it looked to me, in this particular case, maybe
• 24:53
Speaker 6: just one case, like a case of entrapment.
• 24:57
Speaker 5: Yeah, and by the way, I think you got your
• 24:59
Speaker 5: guys mixed up. That was Chris Hansen, not John Stossel. Oh,
• 25:03
Speaker 5: I'm sorry. I was going to correct you there, but yeah,
• 25:07
Speaker 5: but it was Hansen, not John Stossel.
• 25:11
Speaker 6: It did not make him look good. And he is
• 25:15
Speaker 6: upset about the movie.
• 25:16
  Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
• 25:18
Speaker 6: But I think it's worth seeing one time. You know,
• 25:23
Speaker 6: and it's, but man, it's dark.
• 25:29
Speaker 5: I mean, knock out a couple texts here on the
• 25:31
Speaker 5: situation we were talking about with the commentary that TJ
• 25:34
Speaker 5: did today. Text says, the sheriff is the only law
• 25:37
Speaker 5: enforcement official that answers to the people and is elected
• 25:40
Speaker 5: and not selected. So yes, I back the sheriff in
• 25:42
  Speaker 5: this situation.
• 25:45
Speaker 6: Well, you can back the sheriff, but the sheriff doesn't
• 25:49
Speaker 6: have a jail. No, and I don't want, let me,
• 25:56
Speaker 6: maybe I didn't make myself clear. The sheriff, and I
• 26:01
Speaker 6: was sheriff for Kanawha County for four years. The sheriff
• 26:05
Speaker 6: has duties to the citizens. Tickets, crime, just regular stuff.
• 26:15
Speaker 5: Tax collection. That's under West Virginia code.
• 26:18
Speaker 6: That's the number one.
• 26:20
Speaker 5: Tax collection is a much bigger deal by code in
• 26:24
Speaker 5: West Virginia for sheriffs than what law enforcement is.
• 26:27
Speaker 6: David, that's how I got elected. I ran on the
• 26:31
Speaker 6: tax department. I never wore a uniform while I was sheriff.
• 26:37
Speaker 6: The only time I carried the guns was when I
• 26:38
  Speaker 6: qualified with it.
• 26:39
  Speaker 5: But....
• 26:44
Speaker 6: The sheriff already has duties. Now, if you're going to
• 26:47
Speaker 6: pay the sheriff to be involved in ICE activities, you're
• 26:54
Speaker 6: going to take the sheriff and the department away from
• 26:58
Speaker 6: their regular duties. And we don't have enough deputies now
• 27:03
  Speaker 6: in any town.
• 27:04
  Speaker 5: Yeah, that's true.
• 27:05
Speaker 6: We could use more deputies. So that's my objection to it.
• 27:09
Speaker 5: I got you. All right. We knock out a couple
• 27:10
Speaker 5: of texts here before we let you go. Texted, it's
• 27:12
Speaker 5: really annoying how everyone keeps talking about this election as
• 27:15
Speaker 5: a reflection on Trump, but seems to refuse to realize
• 27:18
Speaker 5: that the Democrats cannot retake control of the House, the Senate,
• 27:22
Speaker 5: or the presidency ever again. The future of this nation
• 27:26
Speaker 5: truly is in jeopardy. If Democrats retake Congress, they will
• 27:29
Speaker 5: impeach and remove Trump, and they will impeach and remove Vance.
• 27:32
Speaker 5: They will get masks. amnesty to tens of millions of
• 27:35
Speaker 5: illegals just to get those votes. Illegals are having their
• 27:38
Speaker 5: butts kissed by that party. They do not give a
• 27:40
Speaker 5: damn about the American citizen anymore. It's all about pandering,
• 27:44
Speaker 5: catering to, and bending over backwards for illegal aliens in
• 27:47
Speaker 5: this country right now. It's buying their vote.
• 27:50
Speaker 6: They will take over both houses. They want Pete Trump,
• 27:55
Speaker 6: but they won't have the votes to convict him. All right.
• 27:59
Speaker 5: Danny, it's always a pleasure to have you on the show.
• 28:00
Speaker 5: When are you coming back?
• 28:02
Speaker 6: I'll be in studio next Monday. I'll get back on Sunday.
• 28:06
  Speaker 13: All right.
• 28:07
Speaker 5: Well, I look forward to seeing you in person. Hopefully
• 28:09
Speaker 5: I'll be able to get through a sentence without getting
• 28:10
Speaker 5: all choked up here. So I appreciate you being here,
• 28:13
Speaker 5: my friend, and be safe. Enjoy California. We'll talk next
• 28:15
Speaker 5: week in studio, my friend. Thanks a lot.

Speaker 5: anyone who thinks the blue wave will change Congress or

Speaker 5: for them. It's either continue with the same GOP agenda

Speaker 5: joins me now. How you doing?
• 31:26
Speaker 9: I'm wonderful. Good morning to you, sir.
• 31:28
Speaker 5: So I got to tell the listeners a quick story.
• 31:31
Speaker 5: So my wife and I go On vacation, a couple
• 31:34
Speaker 5: days to Virginia Beach, leave Thursday morning. I get to
• 31:36
Speaker 5: Virginia Beach Thursday afternoon, and I'm not feeling well. And
• 31:40
Speaker 5: any time, any people that know me know I never,
• 31:43
Speaker 5: ever get sick. Well, except that whole cancer thing. And I,
• 31:48
Speaker 5: but I mean, I had a fever and the whole
• 31:50
Speaker 5: deal literally like went like straight to bed, which is
• 31:53
Speaker 5: something I never do. I was feeling better. Like within
• 31:57
Speaker 5: 24 hours. My wife goes across the street to the
• 31:59
Speaker 5: local CVS, gets a COVID test, brings it back, tests
• 32:01
  Speaker 5: positive for COVID.
• 32:03
  Speaker 1: But then.
• 32:04
Speaker 5: Tested again, not so much, you know. And so my
• 32:07
Speaker 5: fever was gone within like 12 hours. So I'm thinking, okay, maybe,
• 32:10
Speaker 5: you know, and I felt pretty good last couple days.
• 32:12
Speaker 5: Getting through this show today, I was not prepared for
• 32:15
Speaker 5: the amount of coughing I was going to do. Now
• 32:17
  Speaker 5: I'm okay. I'm fine. Don't have a fever.
• 32:19
Speaker 9: Well, you just sit there. I'll take it.
• 32:23
Speaker 5: You just sit there now. You just do all the talking.
• 32:26
Speaker 9: Well, I will say that we have a great partnership
• 32:29
Speaker 9: with the I will say that, you know, this is
• 32:37
Speaker 9: tis the season. By the way, we saw it. We
• 32:39
Speaker 9: saw some spikes go up when we sent the littles
• 32:42
Speaker 9: back to school because, you know, I'm a mayor, but
• 32:44
  Speaker 9: I'm a mom first. I know that they don't do
• 32:46
Speaker 9: a great job sometimes washing their hands. So we saw
• 32:52
Speaker 9: a little uptick there and tis the season. We're seeing
• 32:55
Speaker 9: a little uptick, just a little in respiratory illnesses, just
• 32:59
Speaker 9: a smidge in COVID. And so You know, obviously, all
• 33:04
Speaker 9: of the good things that your parents and your teacher said,
• 33:07
Speaker 9: you know, stop touching each other and wash your hands
• 33:10
Speaker 9: and cover your mouth with your sleeve when you're coughing.
• 33:14
Speaker 9: But it is a season. But you sound okay. The
• 33:17
Speaker 9: change in the weather, too, by the way, always gets me.
• 33:21
Speaker 9: It's in the spring and the fall. I lose my voice.
• 33:23
Speaker 9: My children also love when that happens. But it was
• 33:29
Speaker 9: a great weekend in Charleston. Mother Nature has not been
• 33:31
Speaker 9: kind to us this past calendar year. But this past weekend,
• 33:36
Speaker 9: she was very kind to us. Festival had a wonderful week.
• 33:41
Speaker 9: I know you have Zach Harreld on quite frequently. He
• 33:43
Speaker 9: does an amazing job. He's the new director. I think
• 33:46
Speaker 9: he now has gone his first full big boy year
• 33:50
Speaker 9: in that position, maybe. He's done a great job. I
• 33:53
Speaker 9: was at the Capital Market yesterday. The artwork and local
• 33:57
Speaker 9: artisans just packed the capital market. Chuck's done a really
• 34:00
Speaker 9: great job over there. On Saturday, it was from the
• 34:07
Speaker 9: west side all the way to the east end. Lots
• 34:10
Speaker 9: of stuff going on. In particular, October West, Rick Cavender
• 34:13
Speaker 9: and Charlton Urban Works did a wonderful job with their
• 34:17
Speaker 9: October West. It was packed on the west side. And
• 34:22
Speaker 9: not only is October West, yeah, lots of crap. I'm
• 34:25
Speaker 9: not a beer drinker, so. But what is great about
• 34:28
Speaker 9: that is an opportunity to visit, and especially some of
• 34:31
Speaker 9: the new shops over there, the new popcorn shop and
• 34:34
Speaker 9: Goldenrod Kitchen. If you haven't been, you should go. And
• 34:38
Speaker 9: my very favorite shop over there, Elizabeth Lee, which I
• 34:41
Speaker 9: get in trouble when I go over there. So it
• 34:43
Speaker 9: was a great opportunity for folks to get a glimpse
• 34:47
Speaker 9: of the near west side to downtown. And then every year,
• 34:51
Speaker 9: it gets a little bigger and bigger. And I know
• 34:54
Speaker 9: you know John Ingram, but Festival presented, once again, city
• 34:59
Speaker 9: center dead. I'm not a deadhead. Are you a deadhead? No,
• 35:02
Speaker 9: not at all. I'm not. But again... It was to
• 35:05
Speaker 9: the point of— I appreciate live music, though. I do
• 35:07
Speaker 9: as well. I know you do. I do as well.
• 35:09
Speaker 9: And so it was packed. John Ingram and the band
• 35:12
Speaker 9: did just an amazing job. Maya did a great job.
• 35:16
Speaker 9: Of course, Jeff Pearson, our director of public art, was
• 35:19
Speaker 9: out there as well. Festivall does a really, really nice job.
• 35:24
Speaker 9: And a shout out to Mayor Danny Jones, who, you know, Festival,
• 35:29
Speaker 9: that started under his leadership. And it's been wonderful for
• 35:34
Speaker 9: the city of Charleston because we are a really thriving
• 35:37
Speaker 9: arts community. And Festival and FestiFall really helps us solidify
• 35:43
Speaker 9: that brand that we have in so much that there was,
• 35:48
Speaker 9: you know who Mrs. Roper is, don't you?
• 35:50
Speaker 5: Of course I do.
• 35:50
Speaker 9: Of course you do. Because this is an IQ test, right?
• 35:53
Speaker 9: Everybody who's listening knows who Mrs. Roper is. Well, there
• 35:57
Speaker 9: is a group of women who are downtown Charleston. I
• 36:01
Speaker 9: don't know if you saw the pictures. They dress up
• 36:03
  Speaker 9: like Mrs.
• 36:03
  Speaker 6: Roper.
• 36:05
  Speaker 2: Stanley.
• 36:05
Speaker 9: And it is absolutely, yes, Three's Company. And it was
• 36:10
Speaker 9: absolutely fantastic. I ran into them. And as I was
• 36:13
Speaker 9: walking away from that group who were dressed in their Mrs.
• 36:16
Speaker 9: Roper attire, I ran into a young guy who said, Gee,
• 36:19
Speaker 9: thanks for having this. All of my friends from Pittsburgh
• 36:23
Speaker 9: came in and they're staying at the Embassy Suites for
• 36:25
  Speaker 9: the Dead concert.
• 36:26
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 36:27
Speaker 9: And that's what I'm talking about. And of course, everybody
• 36:30
Speaker 9: has an opportunity, hopefully already this morning, to get tickets to,
• 36:35
Speaker 9: here before too long, the Red Clay Strays, which is
• 36:38
Speaker 9: an amazing, amazing group that's coming into the Coliseum and
• 36:42
Speaker 9: Convention Center in February, I think The 11th, right before
• 36:49
Speaker 9: the Valentine's Day. I think Super Bowl's on.
• 36:51
Speaker 5: Valentine's Day this year.
• 36:53
  Speaker 6: It is.
• 36:53
Speaker 9: So if you're not interested in watching a ballgame with
• 36:56
Speaker 9: your love of your life, you can see the Red Clays.
• 36:59
Speaker 9: So lots of music, lots of art, and lots of
• 37:01
Speaker 9: good weather this past weekend.
• 37:03
Speaker 5: I mean, and you had, of course, Steve and Jenny
• 37:05
Speaker 5: did their yard sale. They had that going on. We
• 37:08
Speaker 5: also had Mountaineer's Night Out over at the Red Carpet.
• 37:11
Speaker 5: So that was going on.
• 37:12
  Speaker 1: Amazing.
• 37:13
Speaker 5: Council will meet tonight along those same same lines uh
• 37:16
Speaker 5: it's hard to believe the gomart ballpark mayor is uh
• 37:19
Speaker 5: 20 years old now actually all over that and um
• 37:22
Speaker 5: always a good idea i guess to kind of take
• 37:24
Speaker 5: stock of things and see how the old girl is
• 37:26
Speaker 5: holding up you know and so that's going to be
• 37:29
Speaker 5: discussed the city council tonight it will.
• 37:30
Speaker 9: Be and and for good measure because here's what i
• 37:33
Speaker 9: know um of being in this position now i'm is
• 37:36
Speaker 9: that you have to invest and you have to take
• 37:38
Speaker 9: care of what you have. It's the reason, by the way,
• 37:42
Speaker 9: we're doing so many infrastructure projects in the city of Charleston.
• 37:45
Speaker 9: I can talk more in detail about that if you'd
• 37:47
Speaker 9: like and what we're building right now. But, you know,
• 37:50
Speaker 9: the ballpark was an amazing idea many a moon ago.
• 37:53
Speaker 9: As a matter of fact, I was working in the
• 37:54
Speaker 9: Bob Wise administration. And so I know he was intimately
• 37:57
Speaker 9: involved in this project as well. But Jay Goldman and,
• 38:02
Speaker 9: of course, the Kanawha County Commission, they did an outstanding job,
• 38:06
Speaker 9: and as did Rob and Mayor Jones, of working to
• 38:11
Speaker 9: make sure that we had that there. But just like
• 38:14
Speaker 9: the Coliseum and Convention Center, it needs a couple things.
• 38:17
Speaker 9: Not only does it need, yes, a look over, what
• 38:22
Speaker 9: do we need to do to improve, which we've done
• 38:24
Speaker 9: to the Coliseum and Convention Center, and recently we have,
• 38:27
Speaker 9: in this administration, by putting in and investing in the
• 38:30
Speaker 9: Coliseum side, not the Convention Center side, but the Coliseum side,
• 38:34
Speaker 9: which is where we make a lot of our money
• 38:36
Speaker 9: at the Coliseum and Convention Center. So tonight at Go
• 38:39
Speaker 9: Mart Ballpark, we're going to, or at City Council, we're
• 38:42
Speaker 9: going to be addressing Go Mart Ballpark and doing an
• 38:45
Speaker 9: assessment of it, what needs to be done, what has
• 38:48
Speaker 9: to be done, what's the first alligator in front of us,
• 38:51
Speaker 9: and then what are our long-term plans. But I will
• 38:54
Speaker 9: say that that is It's something that's necessary for sure.
• 38:58
Speaker 9: We need to see how much we need to spend
• 39:01
Speaker 9: now and how much we need to spend later. But
• 39:04
Speaker 9: the good news about GoMart Ballpark is Andy Shea, the
• 39:09
Speaker 9: owner of the Charleston Dirty Birds. This is an incredible team,
• 39:12
Speaker 9: an incredible owner, and someone who really, Dave, has done
• 39:17
Speaker 9: an absolutely transformational job with the ballpark. Because just as
• 39:23
Speaker 9: you and I were talking about, I'm not really a,
• 39:25
Speaker 9: you know, I'm not a dead head, I'm not a that.
• 39:28
Speaker 9: There are other opportunities. by the way. A lot of
• 39:31
Speaker 9: folks go to the ballpark who don't watch the baseball game.
• 39:35
Speaker 9: Because Booth and my husband and I say this all
• 39:38
Speaker 9: the time, had we had those things when our boys
• 39:41
Speaker 9: were little, the family fun zone and the putt pod
• 39:44
Speaker 9: and the Jupiter jumps, gosh, gee whiz, we probably would
• 39:47
Speaker 9: have gone. So Not only is it about the physical infrastructure, right,
• 39:52
Speaker 9: just like the Coliseum and Convention Center, just like the ballpark,
• 39:55
Speaker 9: we have to look to see what should we invest in.
• 39:57
Speaker 9: We also need to look at, which is what we
• 40:00
Speaker 9: focused on with the Coliseum and Convention Center, filling it
• 40:04
Speaker 9: and programming it so we can make money off of
• 40:08
Speaker 9: that facility. And that is what I know. Andy Shea and,
• 40:12
Speaker 9: of course, our administration wants to make sure that we're
• 40:15
Speaker 9: doing at the ballpark. Listen, we're not going to be
• 40:17
Speaker 9: millionaires and trillionaires by certain types of programming. But what
• 40:22
Speaker 9: can we do to improve the lives of people here
• 40:26
Speaker 9: in the Charleston area and just from around the region?
• 40:29
Speaker 9: Because this is also what I do know. Times are tight.
• 40:33
Speaker 9: People are having a really hard time paying for the essentials.
• 40:36
Speaker 9: If we can provide them things and the infrastructure that
• 40:39
Speaker 9: we have for a family-free night out or, by the way,
• 40:43
Speaker 9: most of the things that we talked about this weekend,
• 40:45
Speaker 9: that you could go downtown and listen to this music
• 40:48
Speaker 9: and the Family Fun Zone and the Kids Free Art Project,
• 40:51
Speaker 9: it was all free. It was all free. So we
• 40:53
Speaker 9: have to make sure that we're looking at programming and
• 40:55
Speaker 9: which can sustain us. We also need to be looking
• 40:58
Speaker 9: at a quality of life, which is something that I
• 41:02
Speaker 9: think sounds– Sounds like a brush off comment, quality of life.
• 41:06
  Speaker 6: No, no, no.
• 41:07
Speaker 9: Quality of life is when you are living here, I
• 41:10
Speaker 9: need to have the programming and the things that you
• 41:13
Speaker 9: want to do that you don't have to drive out
• 41:15
Speaker 9: to another big city to do. And oh, by the way,
• 41:18
Speaker 9: always top of mind and tip of tongue is what
• 41:20
Speaker 9: are we doing for the families here who are struggling
• 41:23
Speaker 9: to put gas in the car and food on the
• 41:25
Speaker 9: table and and those opportunities as well.
• 41:29
Speaker 5: Where are we on, I think I've asked you this
• 41:32
Speaker 5: in a while, the relationship between the Dirty Birds and
• 41:36
Speaker 5: the city as it pertains to the ballpark? I mean,
• 41:39
Speaker 5: is there a lease or, I mean, where is that?
• 41:41
Speaker 9: And we're going through those negotiations now.
• 41:43
  Speaker 5: It's great, though.
• 41:44
Speaker 9: Our relationship and our partnership, I think, our Lucky Stars
• 41:47
Speaker 9: has been absolutely tremendous with the industry. But it's, you know,
• 41:50
Speaker 9: it's easy to work with a good partner who has
• 41:52
Speaker 9: a awesome vision and looks and takes the long game. Listen,
• 41:57
Speaker 9: Infrastructure projects and building something takes a long time. We
• 42:03
Speaker 9: don't all have magic wands. And so looking at the
• 42:08
Speaker 9: success of what Andy has done, it has taken years
• 42:12
Speaker 9: because that's what good things have. Listen, we can build
• 42:15
Speaker 9: something tomorrow and it's not going to last. It's not
• 42:16
Speaker 9: going to sustain. It'll be a house of cards. And
• 42:18
Speaker 9: so looking at what types of infrastructure projects are we
• 42:22
Speaker 9: focusing on and also aligning his priorities with our priorities
• 42:26
  Speaker 9: as well.
• 42:27
  Speaker 7: All right.
• 42:27
Speaker 5: We're going to take a break. We'll come back. The
• 42:29

Speaker 5: helping you understand your environment because what you don't know
• 44:10
Speaker 5: can't hurt you. Charlton Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin is here,
• 44:12
Speaker 5: and everywhere you go, Mayor, one of the top two
• 44:14
Speaker 5: or three things we get, people talking about the town center.
• 44:17
Speaker 5: There's a lot of online chatter. Last month, people said
• 44:21
Speaker 5: that they have a cousin that works here and that
• 44:23
Speaker 5: they were told this. What can you tell us?
• 44:25
Speaker 9: What I can tell you this about the Charleston Town
• 44:27
Speaker 9: Center Mall, and everybody knows it's a private organization. It
• 44:29
Speaker 9: is not owned or run by the city. And me
• 44:31
Speaker 9: coming in and taking it is like me saying to
• 44:34
Speaker 9: any other independent or private business, we don't do that
• 44:37
Speaker 9: in government. Government shouldn't reach in. But we have been
• 44:41
Speaker 9: talking for years with the Hall Group and really trying
• 44:45
Speaker 9: to either secure it as a donation or put it
• 44:48
Speaker 9: in the hands of a developer or a buyer. It
• 44:51
Speaker 9: is my understanding that there are discussions going on with
• 44:55
Speaker 9: folks who want to purchase that mall. To keep it
• 45:00
  Speaker 9: a mall, I don't know that that's going to happen
• 45:03
Speaker 9: in the future. But this is what we want in
• 45:05
Speaker 9: the city of Charleston. If we cannot take this as
• 45:07
  Speaker 9: a donation to.
• 45:11
Speaker 9: Put it in the hands of developers to move forward,
• 45:14
Speaker 9: then we wanna see it sold. We wanna see it
• 45:16
Speaker 9: put in the hands of folks who are going to
• 45:19
Speaker 9: do something with it because the egg timer is up.
• 45:22
Speaker 9: Not only are just the businesses that are there, but
• 45:24
Speaker 9: it's the future of West Virginia, especially in Southern West Virginia,
• 45:27
Speaker 9: because listen, we spent a lot of time in the
• 45:29
Speaker 9: 70s and 80s creating one of the largest malls in
• 45:33
Speaker 9: the country. Now it is time to refresh and move forward.
• 45:37
Speaker 9: And it is my direct knowledge that there are people
• 45:41
Speaker 9: who are, looking at and building plans to possibly buy
• 45:45
Speaker 9: the mall. That would be the very best thing for
• 45:48
Speaker 9: the people in the city of Charleston, because we're talking
• 45:50
Speaker 9: about infrastructure, right? It's a huge piece of infrastructure, just
• 45:54
Speaker 9: like around the, and by the way, obviously it impacts downtown.
• 45:59
Speaker 9: Obviously it impacts the Coliseum and Convention Center, the city's
• 46:03
Speaker 9: largest capital investment. But you know, we're getting ready to welcome,
• 46:08
Speaker 9: thank you, TC Energy, and there are hundreds of employees
• 46:12
Speaker 9: to downtown. We just saw the beautiful new groundbreaking or
• 46:16
Speaker 9: the ribbon cutting of Polka Valley Bank. Wow, fantastic. And
• 46:21
Speaker 9: so now what we want to see is that piece
• 46:23
Speaker 9: of property put in the hands of someone. If it's
• 46:26
Speaker 9: not going to be us, then put in the hands
• 46:28
Speaker 9: of somebody who is going to do the right thing because,
• 46:31
Speaker 9: and again, people want it done tomorrow. This is, it
• 46:35
Speaker 9: took them decades. to figure out what they were gonna
• 46:38
Speaker 9: do with that piece of property and building them all.
• 46:41
Speaker 9: And I would imagine it is going to be five,
• 46:44
Speaker 9: nobody wants to hear this, it's gonna be five to
• 46:46
Speaker 9: 10 years to truly fully develop that area, hopefully closer
• 46:51
Speaker 9: to five than 10. But I know this to be true.
• 46:55
Speaker 9: I have eight firehouses in the city of Charleston. I
• 46:57
Speaker 9: am going to be wrapping up the renovations of six.
• 47:00
Speaker 9: It takes years to do those renovations. By the way,
• 47:03
Speaker 9: we're building a $ 20 million public safety center. Sometimes you
• 47:06
Speaker 9: don't see the things that are happening in town. The
• 47:08
Speaker 9: $ 20 million public safety center is over on Bullitt Street.
• 47:12
Speaker 9: It's the old Truist Data Center. We have been working
• 47:16
Speaker 9: hand in glove with our construction team to demo the
• 47:19
Speaker 9: inside so it's ready to go out to bid. We
• 47:23
Speaker 9: met last week for three hours. It takes years. By
• 47:26
Speaker 9: the way, the Capital Connector Project, those are federal funds,
• 47:30
Speaker 9: not city funds. We got those in 2021 for a
• 47:32
Speaker 9: planning grant. When you take a piece of a riverfront
• 47:39
Speaker 9: of a capital city and say, okay, we're going to
• 47:41
Speaker 9: move all utilities, we're going to expand bike lanes, we're
• 47:43
Speaker 9: going to make it walkable, we're going to make it lit,
• 47:45
Speaker 9: we're going to make it safe. And by the way,
• 47:48
Speaker 9: when you have partners like the state and the federal government,
• 47:50
Speaker 9: it takes a while. But good, good projects and good
• 47:54
Speaker 9: development takes a long time to do. And so hopefully,
• 47:58
Speaker 9: and by the way, the bids for the Capital Connector
• 48:01
Speaker 9: are actually going out today. So that's the good news.
• 48:05
Speaker 9: But then, you know, come with it, just like the bridge,
• 48:09
Speaker 9: like the Eugene Carter Memorial Bridge. Yes, there is going
• 48:13
Speaker 9: to be massive construction, which also means, Dave, there are
• 48:16
Speaker 9: going to be delays. And just like the Capitol Connector,
• 48:19
Speaker 9: it's going to be a game changer for this riverfront city.
• 48:24
Speaker 9: It's going to be an inconvenience because we are going
• 48:27
Speaker 9: to have to shut down parts of the boulevard during
• 48:30
Speaker 9: this 18-month construction period to do that massive from Magic
• 48:36
Speaker 9: Island to the 35th Street Bridge and up Greenbrier as well.
• 48:40
Speaker 5: Since we talked last, we have a new city council person.
• 48:44
Speaker 5: In Charleston, you reminded me of that this morning.
• 48:45
Speaker 9: We do, wonderful. Jessica Hudson, well, let me first start
• 48:50
Speaker 9: by saying, Pam Berka, just like her husband, have done
• 48:54
Speaker 9: an amazing job in the city of Charleston, in particular,
• 48:56
Speaker 9: Kanawha City, Dave, and you know this. Their spirit, their
• 49:00
Speaker 9: energy that they put into Kanawha City has been monumental.
• 49:04
Speaker 9: And so while we understood and appreciated that she needed
• 49:08
Speaker 9: to step back, what I felt is that We needed
• 49:13
Speaker 9: somebody who's not on the ticket, who's not running. And
• 49:15
Speaker 9: of course, state legislature changed the way that you appoint
• 49:18
Speaker 9: people now. It has to be the party. Because if
• 49:20
Speaker 9: you recall, Sam Minardi, who was in Ward 15 when
• 49:24
Speaker 9: he exited out, who was a Democrat, I appointed Harper Gardner,
• 49:28
  Speaker 9: who's a Republican.
• 49:30
  Speaker 6: Why?
• 49:30
Speaker 9: Because he was a good candidate and he ran and
• 49:33
Speaker 9: he's engaged and involved and shows up. Well, you can't
• 49:36
Speaker 9: do that any longer. You have to pick from the
• 49:37
  Speaker 9: same party, which I don't. don't like because I feel
• 49:41
Speaker 9: like in municipal government, nobody talks about Democrats or Republican.
• 49:45
Speaker 9: It really should be a nonpartisan race.
• 49:47
  Speaker 7: I digress.
• 49:48
Speaker 9: Jessica Hudson is the new councilwoman for Ward 18. She's
• 49:52
Speaker 9: done an amazing job. She has a financial background. She
• 49:56
Speaker 9: really has no interest in running, but she does have
• 49:59
Speaker 9: an interest in that community. She's lived there with her
• 50:03
Speaker 9: husband and her children. She's worked for the Girl Scouts.
• 50:05
Speaker 9: They go to the pool over there. and she has
• 50:08
Speaker 9: really invested in this community. And so this will be
• 50:12
Speaker 9: her second meeting tonight and already engaged, involved, asking questions.
• 50:17
Speaker 9: And that's really what you want out of your representative.
• 50:20
Speaker 5: All right. So as we close with Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler,
• 50:23
Speaker 5: we did have a text. Somebody asked about anything new
• 50:25
Speaker 5: on the Municipal Auditorium.
• 50:26
Speaker 9: Municipal Auditorium, I know that the Coliseum and Convention Center
• 50:31
Speaker 9: Board of Directors are still discussing it and what their
• 50:34
Speaker 9: options are. And then they will present to City Council
• 50:38
Speaker 9: at a time of what they think is the best, um,
• 50:40
Speaker 9: as the best man for it. Of course it has
• 50:41
Speaker 9: to come to city council, has to come to city
• 50:43
Speaker 9: council before we do anything on that building.
• 50:46
Speaker 5: It's been an exciting, uh, summer here in Charleston. I
• 50:49
Speaker 5: know fall is going to be just that. And we
• 50:50
Speaker 5: got so many big events that are going to be
• 50:52
Speaker 5: going on. I know we'll be talking about light the
• 50:54
Speaker 5: night over at the ballpark here real soon. Jolly Jolly
• 50:56
Speaker 5: Jolly Jolly, uh, trick or beat. That's one of your
• 50:59
Speaker 5: favorite events coming up here in a couple of weeks.
• 51:01
Speaker 9: It's going to be great. Somebody said that you, you
• 51:03
Speaker 9: take a little, you take a little break and then
• 51:05
Speaker 9: move forward. Um, I'm a member of the National League
• 51:10
Speaker 9: of Cities and I'm getting ready to next month take
• 51:12
Speaker 9: over as the president of the Women in Municipal Government
• 51:15
Speaker 9: for this national organization. And they said, what are some
• 51:18
Speaker 9: good dates and times? I'm sure the fall and winter
• 51:21
Speaker 9: may be a little bit easier. And I said, it
• 51:23
Speaker 9: actually isn't. And especially with Holly Jolly Brawley and, of course,
• 51:26
Speaker 9: our Christmas parade and Light the Night. Again, I'm going
• 51:30
Speaker 9: to end where we started, which is quality of life.
• 51:32
Speaker 9: That's what people want in the city of Charleston. What
• 51:35
Speaker 9: can I get here and what can I do for free?
• 51:37
Speaker 9: Holly Jolly Brawley, by the way, is a prime example
• 51:39
  Speaker 9: of that.
• 51:40
  Speaker 11: All right.
• 51:41
Speaker 5: Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin, appreciate you being here with
• 51:44
Speaker 5: us today. Thanks a lot. All right. I'll be back
• 51:47
Speaker 5: to do this show tomorrow. Hopefully the voice will hold out.
• 51:50
Speaker 5: Coming up on the show tomorrow, and speaking of big
• 51:52
Speaker 5: events in Charleston, preparing for the football championships. It's already time. Well,
• 51:56
Speaker 5: they never stopped preparing for that. Mike Arbogast. He's going
• 51:59
Speaker 5: to join us to talk about that coming up on
• 52:00
Speaker 5: tomorrow's show. Also, Jermon Schmidt from Goodwill will be on
• 52:03
Speaker 5: the show tomorrow as well. I'll be back later today
• 52:05
Speaker 5: with Metro News at midday with Amanda Barron and me.
• 52:08
Speaker 5: Lots to talk about. Mayor Patrick Farrell will be on
• 52:10
Speaker 5: the show today, amongst other folks. Senior producer Ryan Nicholson,
• 52:14
Speaker 5: thank you so much. I will see you later today.
• 52:15
Speaker 5: Until then, have fun and love somebody.
