- 0:00Three companies now carry more weight in emerging markets
- 0:03than the countries of India, Brazil,
- 0:05South Africa and Mexico combined.
- 0:08Those companies happened to be semiconductor
- 0:10giants in the countries Taiwan and Korea.
- 0:12So what's driving this incredible rally
- 0:15and the question that we all want to know.
- 0:17Is it sustainable?
- 0:18We're going to talk about that in a whole lot more right now.
- 0:20On UBS Trending.
- 0:33Hi, everybody.
- 0:34And thank you for joining me.
- 0:36I'm Anthony Pastore, your host for UBS Trending.
- 0:38And in the studio
- 0:39with me again is Alejo Czerwonko,
- 0:40the CIO for Emerging Markets here at UBS.
- 0:43Alejo, good to have you back.
- 0:44Thank you for having me.
- 0:46Despite World Cup fever, which we're all talking about a lot,
- 0:49the final games are coming up soon.
- 0:51We have to go to the emerging markets landscape now, because
- 0:55in prepping for today, you're talking about Taiwan and Korea.
- 0:59And there have been incredible gains.
- 1:02And there are equity markets.
- 1:03And I mentioned in the beginning more than three companies
- 1:06are besting multiple countries.
- 1:08That's right.
- 1:09What's going on there?
- 1:10Why why are we seeing such incredible outperformance
- 1:13specifically in these two countries?
- 1:15All right. Let me take a step back.
- 1:17Emerging markets at large have been outperforming
- 1:20the S&P 500 for 18 months now.
- 1:24Yes.
- 1:25This year it's been mostly about Korea and Taiwan.
- 1:30These countries are up 80% in US
- 1:32dollars 60% in US dollars respectively.
- 1:35Tremendous rally.
- 1:37But if you incorporate support
- 1:40from Latin America in the last 18 months,
- 1:43you also see very significant returns 75% up.
- 1:47So I think the emerging markets are a story of technology,
- 1:52mostly North Asia and commodities, mostly
- 1:56Latin America, specifically to Korea and Taiwan.
- 1:59You are referring to countries that have been focusing
- 2:03on building the best chips in the planet for 50 years.
- 2:07Takes a lot of work.
- 2:09You get to develop an ecosystem of suppliers,
- 2:12the knowhow that today, quite frankly, it is irreplaceable.
- 2:16Yeah.
- 2:17When you look at Latin America,
- 2:18before we go back to Taiwan and Korea,
- 2:20what are some of the countries that are performing well?
- 2:23It's been that broad based, really.
- 2:25Brazil, in the last 18 months, solid performance.
- 2:29Mexico, accompanying Chile, Colombia, Peru, Argentina,
- 2:33all of them well into the double digit territory.
- 2:36So it's been broad based testing taking into account
- 2:39depressed valuations in Latin America and a fair amount of
- 2:43a commodity exposure. Right?
- 2:44Right, exactly.
- 2:45Let's go back to Asia then,
- 2:47because it looks like
- 2:47Taiwan and Korea have actually overtaken China
- 2:51as the largest equity markets
- 2:53in the emerging world,
- 2:54which is almost unfathomable
- 2:56to think,
- 2:56unfathomable to think about,
- 2:58because we know in China there are more billionaires per capita
- 3:01than anywhere in the world, or certainly rivaling the U.S.
- 3:04and other, you know, like developed, economies.
- 3:09What is that part of the story?
- 3:11Tell us about how investors think about the future
- 3:15of growth, especially in that region.
- 3:18And I know we're talking about semiconductors,
- 3:21and of course, the increased usage and implementation of AI,
- 3:25kind of helping to tell this story
- 3:28and making the story really feasible.
- 3:31Yes.
- 3:32For these countries,
- 3:32you're spot on, maybe to put things into context today.
- 3:37Korea and Taiwan together make up almost 50%
- 3:40of emerging market market capitalization.
- 3:43Jagan. That's incredible.
- 3:44Overtaking both of them, each of them China.
- 3:48And as you highlighted in the intro, I think even more mind
- 3:51boggling is the fact that three chip companies from Korea
- 3:55and Taiwan today have a larger weight in emerging markets than
- 4:01India, Mexico,
- 4:03Brazil, South Africa, the UAE and Saudi Arabia combined.
- 4:08Right? It's wild.
- 4:10This is how much concentration we're talking about these days.
- 4:13In addition, volatility has picked up, focusing on Korea.
- 4:18There's been,
- 4:20quite some use of leveraged ETFs
- 4:23by retail investors to express investment views.
- 4:27And this,
- 4:27of course supercharges
- 4:29the upside and potentially also the downside.
- 4:31So volatility in Korea to some extent
- 4:34Taiwan has extended to the broader emerging markets.
- 4:38So I would say Anthony the emerging market ecosystem is evolving.
- 4:43You get to be mindful of concentration and in some way,
- 4:48you know, just remember remember Warren Buffett's mantra,
- 4:53be greedy when others are fearful, be fearful
- 4:56when others are greedy
- 4:57and this is not necessarily the time to aggressively chase
- 5:01the leaders.
- 5:02It is time to maintain exposure.
- 5:04But diversity across other countries.
- 5:07Okay, but I have to ask this question.
- 5:10I'd be remiss if I didn't.
- 5:12So looking at the numbers again, Taiwan's equity markets up
- 5:16about 60%, Korea maybe more than 75%.
- 5:19Just for context, if you look at the average
- 5:21gains in the S&P 500 here in the US
- 5:25for the last 50 to 60 years, it's about 8 to 10% a year
- 5:28on average. Yes. Right.
- 5:30So comparing that to these numbers,
- 5:32it's a it's a massive difference.
- 5:34So 60 and 75% for those that may not know
- 5:37those are big huge gains.
- 5:39I think everybody understands that.
- 5:41I think they can. Right.
- 5:42Contextually it's even more significant. Right.
- 5:44But here's the question then are we in danger
- 5:47of some kind of bubble territory, are valuations correct.
- 5:52As far as you can see, when you're looking at,
- 5:54you know, everything from the beginning to the end or,
- 5:58you know, and also our investors may be in danger
- 6:01of getting ahead of themselves,
- 6:02given even the volatility that you were just talking about.
- 6:05Yes.
- 6:05Let's maybe get some facts straight, because a lot of the rally
- 6:09can be justified by fundamentals.
- 6:11These companies are posting incredibly strong earnings.
- 6:16Right. So when you look at the price
- 6:19divided by the
- 6:20earnings things are not crazy right.
- 6:24There's been significant moves. Yes.
- 6:26I think you could argue
- 6:28maybe markets are riding a little bit too far too fast.
- 6:31Let me go back to Warren
- 6:32Buffett's be fearful when others are greedy.
- 6:35I sympathize with that.
- 6:37But there is fundamental value behind
- 6:39what's going on in North Asia.
- 6:41Incredibly innovative, innovative markets.
- 6:44It takes 50 years to build something like this.
- 6:47And the harsh reality, Anthony, is there's no alternative.
- 6:52You cannot replicate five decades of deep focus
- 6:58work to be at the cutting edge
- 7:00of semiconductor manufacturing in Korea and Taiwan.
- 7:04Right.
- 7:04So I think you should be able to hold two maybe conflicting
- 7:07thoughts in the head at the same time.
- 7:10Incredible, markets
- 7:13very solid fundamentals, maybe a bit running ahead of themselves.
- 7:17So what do you do? You maintain some exposure yet?
- 7:20Do you diversify,
- 7:22minimizing FOMO, minimizing chasing performance.
- 7:26Right.
- 7:27What I
- 7:27what I appreciate you saying
- 7:28is that you're looking at the fundamentals
- 7:31and they are clearly there.
- 7:32These are not we're not talking about meme stocks.
- 7:35It's not all fluff.
- 7:36Yes. Right.
- 7:36And it's not just technicals either.
- 7:38Which technicals have a place in any portfolio.
- 7:41But you need the fundamentals as a baseline
- 7:43to make sure that you're actually investing in something real
- 7:45that has a store of value.
- 7:46That's correct. They're still solid from the.
- 7:47That's right okay.
- 7:48So given all that which by the way,
- 7:50thank you for for confirming that what should investors do.
- 7:53So obviously we talk every month here
- 7:54about how investors should diversify portfolios
- 7:57putting some emerging markets in there.
- 7:59Given what
- 8:00we are seeing, particularly with Taiwan and Korea
- 8:04and even what you mentioned about
- 8:05some of the things that are happening in Latin America,
- 8:07where should investors
- 8:08be adding exposure to their portfolios
- 8:10if they don't already have it?
- 8:12Yes, I would say,
- 8:13look at our transformational innovation opportunities.
- 8:17That's a good way to play many of the dynamics
- 8:20behind Korea and Taiwan.
- 8:23If you believe in AI, as we do, you should build a portfolio
- 8:27that is dynamic, that,
- 8:29adapts to the opportunities at different points in time.
- 8:32And that has a strong footing in the US,
- 8:35but also contemplates opportunities outside of the US.
- 8:38That's what we're doing with our trios artificial
- 8:41intelligence, power and resources and longevity.
- 8:44Yeah, right.
- 8:45You will get some North Asia exposure through this
- 8:48transformational innovation opportunities.
- 8:52Approach.
- 8:53In addition,
- 8:53we think emerging markets can continue to perform earnings.
- 8:57Are there.
- 8:57Valuations are not extremely not not demanding.
- 9:01And you should have, of course, Korean and Taiwan.
- 9:04They want but contemplate Latin America as we emphasized before
- 9:07and some of the laggards from 2026
- 9:11India is down 10% this year in US dollars.
- 9:13China is down 10% this year.
- 9:15And the US dollar is clearly not doing very well.
- 9:17We think there's some value brewing in the laggards as well.
- 9:21Okay Alejo. Thank you.
- 9:22You know, it's funny because just a few years ago
- 9:24when AI wasn't in the conversation
- 9:27and a real part of our daily lives,
- 9:28there was talk that cell phones, which was a bigger part
- 9:32of the semiconductor business for the decade before,
- 9:34had maybe started to reach a bit of a peak.
- 9:36And there was concern about what would happen
- 9:38with the semiconductor industry.
- 9:39But then AI comes into play
- 9:40and now we're seeing stories like this.
- 9:42It's it's hard to get enough of them. Exactly.
- 9:44It's like, yeah, they just can't get them out fast enough.
- 9:46I like oh thank you so much. Any good stuff. Great story.
