- 0:01Coming up on this week's episode of hip Hop Now podcast, Nikki and Meghan
- 0:07trading bars and I'm kind of here for it. Birdman believes the South needs
- 0:13more credit for keeping hip hop alive, and my thoughts on a new album,
- 0:19the New Death Jam Album from Benny to Butcher. Everybody can't go.
- 0:25That's not what you think. Let's do it. Welcome to hip Hop Now
- 0:33Podcasts. If you from the future, you know what you do, show
- 0:40ass out of life, so disrespect the leg lean. Hip hop is here
- 0:47this today, escat right into the business. What up, y'all? I
- 0:52am your host Vegas and this is hip Hop Now podcast, a podcast specifically
- 0:58designed to keep you caught up on all things hip hop, music and culture
- 1:03that happened throughout the week. Big shout out to the supporters of this podcast
- 1:08over at patreon dot com slash hip Hop Now. If you would like to
- 1:14learn more, visit the link in the description of this episode. Now,
- 1:21before I get started, I have a new segment on YouTube, strictly on
- 1:26YouTube, exclusively on YouTube, called Tale of the Tapes. If you're watching
- 1:32on YouTube, you can see right behind me a bunch of cassette tapes that's
- 1:37not all of them. It's some of them. There's some right over there,
- 1:41so the pile over there is the deep dive. But the segment is
- 1:47really about talking about these tapes when they came out, when I bought them,
- 1:52what I think at the time, how do I feel today. Obviously
- 1:56a lot of this music you can find on your favorite streaming service, so
- 2:00if you don't collect tapes, or you don't collect final or any physical media,
- 2:06you can still check them out. And there's some joints that just don't
- 2:08get mentioned. Like my first episode was about the Boogey Monsters album their debut
- 2:14album, what is It? Riders of the Storm the Underwater album. Check
- 2:20that out. I also did p Rock and Seal Smooths second album, The
- 2:25Main Ingredients. So if you just like the quick bites, quick listens on
- 2:31it like two minutes three minutes max each episode. And the plan is to
- 2:38do this at least maybe four times a month or something like that, or
- 2:46close to it or whatever. I kind of wanted to be a weekly thing,
- 2:51but right now I'm starting out with Thursdays and Fridays, and if it
- 2:54gets good traction and you subscribe, then I'll keep it going. But I
- 2:59have other ideas that'll come along the lines as well that will come to this
- 3:02channel. So what you need to do is, if you like the sound
- 3:06of that, you like this episode, subscribe to this channel. What I'm
- 3:12trying to do on YouTube trying to get to five hundred followers. I've already
- 3:15conquered the audio side of podcasting. I've been in the game for years.
- 3:19I've been in games for years, man, but now on YouTube, I've
- 3:23done things here and there, but never consistently. Now fifty years of hip
- 3:29hop behind us, consistently on YouTube bringing you content, including one thing that
- 3:34I think I'm going to bring back because I kind of like it as a
- 3:38variety for content. It was a segment I used to do called the Rap
- 3:44Game, where I would play a video game and talk about hip hop,
- 3:49right, something that I don't cover on the weekly podcast or in any way
- 3:53that I could just talk about. Usually it's better for me to play sports
- 3:58games and do that because if I play anything else, I can't concentrate.
- 4:01So if you would like to see what that was about, just check my
- 4:06playlist. I have a couple there that I did in the past, but
- 4:11I'm trying to do it in a bigger and better way, probably be on
- 4:14camera this time, so you don't just listen to me. You get to
- 4:16see me as I say these things. You know what I'm saying. Some
- 4:18people want to see it, brother, so it's cool, but subscribe.
- 4:23You gotta do that. Big shout out to hip Hop DX dot com,
- 4:28All hip Hop dot Com, Double XL I Believe, and a couple of
- 4:32places where I'm getting my stories from. Let's get right into the business.
- 4:39So what y'all don't know? Because when I did this, it kind of
- 4:45happened between my break and I thought about doing it for the podcast, but
- 4:49I didn't. I listened to Pink Friday too, and the last Nicki Minaj
- 4:57album I probably listened to in its entirety was probably Pink Friday right, mainly
- 5:01because of all the noise arounding them, and I must say I wasn't offended
- 5:08by it at all. I thought it was cool. I thought sound quality
- 5:12wise it was excellent. I felt like Nicki was mostly entertaining. I think
- 5:17there should have been maybe less tracks on it, but in general, the
- 5:24only thing I would say just felt And again I don't know her entire catalog,
- 5:28so correct me if I'm wrong, but I just kind of felt like
- 5:32she was stuck in this kind of like anger mode and throwing subliminals and stuff
- 5:38like that. Well, one of those people she threw shots at was Megandi
- 5:44Stallion and recently Meghani Stallion released a disc record where she takes shots back and
- 5:51then NICKI comes back on her Instagram live and I think she either says it
- 5:57or plays a snippet of a couple of bars of her her taking shots back.
- 6:00And the reason why I'm talking about this it's not because I'm the biggest
- 6:05fan of their music. You know, I like a song or two here
- 6:09and there, but I'm really not h I like the bars like this,
- 6:15thising, this little dissing. I'm like, okay, you know, because
- 6:17it's one thing to just say something about somebody, you know, to disparagingly,
- 6:24like yo, you whack or you know you'll get your head done or
- 6:27whatever. You ladies, some of you ladies be to Now this is how
- 6:30some of you ladies be dissing each other. H But what I liked about
- 6:35this it was like I wasn't mine hearing a straight up, you know,
- 6:40battle between the two. So let's go to some of those bars. That
- 6:45I mentioned it. Now, let me just say it disclaimer. I know
- 6:47my audience, I know the demographic. I know most of y'all around my
- 6:51age or close to it. And you do not listen to either of these
- 6:57two at all, and you're probably saying to yourself, these bars are whack
- 7:01before you hear them. They may be whack to you, But I like
- 7:05hip hop and I want to see at least they're talking about something different from
- 7:11what they usually talk about. But it's a family podcast, so I'm not
- 7:14gonna say what it is, but'all know what it is. What's that song?
- 7:17Wap? That's usually all they say. So it's refreshing to see this
- 7:24battle. This is on hip Hop dx dot com. It says Nicki minaj
- 7:27Your Meghan d Stallion trade venomous bars as few the Knights over hiss this.
- 7:33Nicki Minaje has responded to Megan D Stallion with some bars with some bars of
- 7:43her own after being dissed on hits. Now his is Meghan's this record.
- 7:50So here are some of the bars aimed at Niki from Meghan D. Stallion,
- 7:56and I quote these holes don't be mad at Meghan, these holes mad
- 8:01at Meghan's law. I don't really know what the problem is, but I
- 8:05guarantee y'all don't want me to start now. I like what Hip Hop DX
- 8:11did here because I know you might be saying, well, she's not mad
- 8:16at Megan, she's mad at Megan's law. It's Meghan's law. Wow.
- 8:22The Meghan's Law line is clearly aimed at Nicki Minaj's husband, who had some
- 8:31you know, some sex offender rape. He did time for rape of a
- 8:35sixteen year old and all of that. Meghan's law is a law aimed to
- 8:41lord. Let me just read it. Specifically, it references the federal law
- 8:46requiring authorities to make information available to the public regarding registered sex offenders. That's
- 8:54what Meghan's Law is. So you're not mad at Megan, you're mad at
- 8:58Meghan's law because, yeah, her husband is a scumbag and we all know
- 9:01it. I like that. But then Nikki responded on her ig after saying,
- 9:09what does she say? Bad ish? She like six foot? I
- 9:18call her bigfoot the bee fell off. I said, get up on your
- 9:24good foot. Y'all know what she's talking about. She's talking about Meghan getting
- 9:30shot in the foot and blah blah blah talking about I call it a bigfoot.
- 9:35I like it. Yeah, I'm sorry, I like it. I
- 9:39think sometimes we just need to go there right when the energy is that,
- 9:46and you know it's a little jad's hand in. Sometimes you just gotta go
- 9:48there. So there you have it. I'm curious to hear more. I'm
- 9:54gonna check out the Meghan Stallion song in general. I just hope, like
- 10:00that's not all it is, you know what I'm saying, because then I'm
- 10:03gonna tap out right, don't talk about all this other stuff, and then
- 10:07throw one shot and then that's it. No, let's go in. Let's
- 10:13go in, ladies, let's go in. Let's just say yo, you
- 10:16can't rap, and just go in. Get some ghostwriters. If you can't
- 10:20do it yourself, I don't know everybody else does, so they have it.
- 10:26Birdman believes. I know, I know the South needs more credit for
- 10:31keeping hip hop alive. And this was sort of sparked because of twenty twenty
- 10:39three, which was fifty years of hip hop, and how he felt looking
- 10:45at the recognition. He felt like it just wasn't enough homage being paid to
- 10:52the South. And honestly, I can agree, But it's not just the
- 10:58South, if you as me, I feel like West Coast was kind of
- 11:03shrunk down into those who cross, you know, regions, right like,
- 11:11sure you're gonna see Ice Cube and West You're gonna see West Coast legends like
- 11:15that, like Snoop and Dre and stuff like that. They're gonna get their
- 11:18flowers. Why because they connect with more regions, just more regions than locally.
- 11:24But there are some groups that do the same thing. They're just not
- 11:28as successful as far as record sales and maybe being the household name right that
- 11:37they were kind of forgotten, you know. And I think some because of
- 11:41social media, some were getting their flowers, right, Like Souls and Mischief
- 11:46was getting they flowers. Because everybody loves ninety three till Infinity. That's like
- 11:50a timeless records. It's one of the greatest hip hop songs of all time
- 11:54for a number of reasons. Even a video I liked a lot, but
- 11:58not just them, know, just giving props. And I feel like I
- 12:03agree with baby because I don't think, well, I let me say this.
- 12:11I don't think the South kept hip hop alive, right, I think
- 12:16it brought it to where it is today. Which is the number one genre.
- 12:20But that's a build up of fifty years. There was a time in
- 12:26the early nineties, right, there was like this turning point in the mid
- 12:31to early nineties where most hip hop acts didn't really Bailey went gold, and
- 12:37we're talking about legends. Bailey went gold. Bailey almost never went platinum.
- 12:45You had to be special, you had to be el Josiah to go platinum.
- 12:48But that's one guy. And then in the mid to late nineties they
- 12:54started to sell ridiculously to start to make more money, and then from there
- 13:01on it rappers making money like that. It never went back. Now,
- 13:07sure there were times where hip hop was declining in record sales, but that
- 13:15was happening with music in general, and someone's going to rise to the top,
- 13:18right, That's kind of how it works. That's how competition works.
- 13:20You start declining, that's like being on the scene. You know you to
- 13:24die. You start declining, but this other dude going off, people start
- 13:28to look at him more than you, even though you were did start right,
- 13:31So you got to bring yourself back up. And I think it's not
- 13:35that it kept it alive because it wasn't on a respirator. It did what
- 13:41it was supposed to do. For a long time, it was New York.
- 13:46Then it was the West Coast heavy like as far as the tension of
- 13:52hip hop is on them, and now for the last a number of years,
- 13:58might be twenty. To be honest, the South has been leading to
- 14:01charge and I think it's because and this is no slight, because this is
- 14:05just real, the South style of rapping. And I'm not talking Fonte and
- 14:13Jay Electronic and people who got bars. I'm talking about most of the rappers
- 14:18you know from the South that aren't like spitters. It's more digestible for more
- 14:24people. It's easier to learn the lyrics, it's easier to digest the hook
- 14:30if it's not as complex, and some people prefer that even I remember one
- 14:37dude told me before, like, you know, I like Biggie, I
- 14:41like some jay Z man, but you know, in my region, man,
- 14:45just like we just like it slow. We like to have like the
- 14:48one requirement is that base got a thump. Beyond that, y'o, just
- 14:54talk about some stuff I can relate to, nice catchy hook, something I
- 14:58could bump in my ride, and that's it. And there's nothing wrong with
- 15:03that. Like I'm a big currency fan because of that. I just like
- 15:07the vibe of it, right, And when I want to go and listen
- 15:11to some intricate bars and stuff like that, then I'll go to the rapidly
- 15:15rap dudes. If I want some some thugs and gangs and stuff, I'll
- 15:18go to that. There's nothing wrong with hip hop having a variety of sounds
- 15:24because then you consume more. But I think in recent years it's just it's
- 15:31just easier for more people to digest. Right. So in some ways it
- 15:37took rap to another level. That's what I could agree with. But I
- 15:43won't say it kept it alive because I don't think it was dying. I
- 15:48think sometimes when people their business is not doing as well, then they say,
- 15:56oh everything's fallen off. No you falling off? You know what I'm
- 16:00saying, Like, come on, and really, to be honest, we
- 16:08look at young money, right, is that all South? Nicky from what
- 16:12Queens? You know? We know Drake from Canada. So I think in
- 16:19a lot of ways, it's not just the South. I just think there
- 16:23was time for something different. We heard a lot of New York, we
- 16:27heard a lot of West Coast what's different? And Atlanta and the South was
- 16:33different right in this iteration. Sure there was outcasts, but you know,
- 16:40dudes like Future and Migos and everybody from Atlanta. It was a different sound
- 16:45and vibe that maybe was more in a pocket for them, but was more
- 16:49digestible for everybody in hip hop. If that makes sense? What do you
- 16:52think? Is he right? You know? I do agree the South didn't
- 16:57get enough respect during Hip Hop fifty, But keeping it alive, I don't
- 17:04know, what do you say? And lastly, so Benny the Butcher just
- 17:12dropped his new album called Everybody Can't Go Now. Y'all know how I do
- 17:21when it comes to this is strictly impressions, or it's kind of like a
- 17:26review, but it's impressions. I like to give it three good listens.
- 17:30Right First, there's that first listen. I'm just trying to hear what you
- 17:36got, what you got? Second listen, I'm listening a little bit more
- 17:40closely now. Sometimes in that first listen, I already know it's hot.
- 17:44On the second listen, I'm like trying to be sure, right, I
- 17:47heard what I heard. Third listen is just like do you like it or
- 17:52not? And I'm not gonna hold y'all, this is okay, this is
- 18:00underwhelming, This is mid And I hate to say that because next to Kendrick
- 18:08Lamar and Conway, Benny is probably one of my favorites. And I've spoken
- 18:18on this podcast about his him kind of talking a lot about it right in
- 18:26advance, you know, hyping it up, which is cool, boxes do
- 18:29that the greatest of blah blah blah cool. But if you look like like
- 18:33yo, you look like you're losing in the fight, well then there's another
- 18:37thing. And then also the battling back and forth for fans and calling them
- 18:41nerds just because they questioned some of the things he say about being you know,
- 18:48death Jam, bringing a feeling back of Death Jam when Exit did it,
- 18:52and all that stuff. Even though I didn't like a lot of that,
- 18:56it still didn't keep me from listening to this album. It still didn't
- 19:00color what I heard when I was listening to be like, yeah, look,
- 19:03this ain't ex It's just it is not Benny. Now, let me
- 19:11just give y'all some stuff right real quick, thinking about this album, the
- 19:17tail of the tape, so to speak. We know Benny got bars,
- 19:23so I wasn't expecting him to be whack at all, and I don't think
- 19:29he is. I think he can still rap. I think things he say
- 19:32is still dope. It just is. This album is produced by hip Boy
- 19:37and Alchemists. You don't get no better than that if you're trying to be
- 19:44great on some hip hop stuff. So you got Bars, you got hip
- 19:47Man, and you got Alchemists all hot at the same time. This might
- 19:52be his best project, right. Added to that, you also have features
- 19:56from Lil Wayne, who else you got, Snoop Dogg, Stove, God
- 20:02Cooks right, Jada Kisses on here, and then of course Westside Gun and
- 20:07Conways on head. Also. It just sounds like this is an early top
- 20:17five for me out the Gate haven't even heard it. It is not it
- 20:23is. It's one of those things where it's not bad, but you just
- 20:29kind of say, when you're done with it, you kind of say,
- 20:32huh. I don't know if I like that as much as I thought I
- 20:36would. So when I went and listened a second time, I was like,
- 20:40all right, you know, hurt everything, let me get into it.
- 20:45And I was even more bored with it now on the third listen,
- 20:56it was like, yeah, it's not bad and it's just underwhelming. Shout
- 21:03out to Salt in the game. Not like she made up that word,
- 21:07but you know, she said what I was thinking. But it was just
- 21:11really underwhelming. And now one thing that I don't want to happen. And
- 21:18this is for me and you know, my listening experience and how I feel
- 21:22about it. But last year I said almost some of the same things about
- 21:30Conway the Machines, what was it? Won't he do? Why won't he
- 21:36whatever? And later on it made my top five because as I would go
- 21:44back to it because he's one of my favorite rappers, I'm gonna go I'm
- 21:47gonna keep going back until I am sure. I don't care if it's ten
- 21:49listens and I'm like, yeah, it ain't it, And I wind up
- 21:53liking that album way more. But I think that album production wise, just
- 22:00has a little bit more energy to it. And I feel like the songs
- 22:04that Benny have on here are cool. But there's some skips. There's like
- 22:10maybe three maybe for songs. When I got to like the second listen,
- 22:17I was like, I'm forcing it with this one. Let me just skip
- 22:19it. You don't like it, Vegas, why are you trying to listen
- 22:23to that? You know, you don't like it. You're trying too hard
- 22:27to like it. When you got to do that, it's just not good.
- 22:30It's just not connecting with me. And I kind of felt like,
- 22:36well, is it gonna be the same thing, you know, end of
- 22:37the year, you know, after the hype has died down and I know
- 22:42what the project is and I just go listen to it when I you know,
- 22:45go work out, which I already did, but uh, do some
- 22:48housework or whatever. Am I gonna feel differently? I don't think so.
- 22:53Man, the Conway joint, I didn't initially like the beats, but then
- 23:00I grew to appreciate him because of his bar work, right, His bars
- 23:03kind of made the beats better than me. With this, I kind of
- 23:07feel like some of Alchemist's joints are too sleepy for me. The joints that
- 23:15really hit are so dope. Like I like the joint Braun. I'm like,
- 23:18this is Benny, but it really only happens like maybe two more times
- 23:25with that same kind of energy. Like on the song with Snoop Back Again.
- 23:30I think that song's crazy, right. I like it, I love
- 23:33it, and I'm like, why isn't it more this right, Like,
- 23:37you can't have a bunch of hype songs, but yo, maybe just shorten
- 23:41the joint so it's just tighter. The song with Amani Caesar, I don't
- 23:47like it, man, and I don't mind her. I kind of like
- 23:49her, you know what I'm saying, But it's not just her. It's
- 23:53just like the whole vibe is just really like y'all supposed to like it because
- 24:00it's me and I do like some of the things he says in some of
- 24:04the records, though I ain't gonna front because I always feel like some rappers
- 24:08talk about the same things and don't talk enough about themselves, and I feel
- 24:12like he does a lot of talking about himself in ways that make sense.
- 24:18But there's certain I guess points of his life that he keeps revisiting that kind
- 24:25of makes me feel like and correct me if I'm wrong, But why don't
- 24:29you just make a song about your entire song about your brother that pass like
- 24:33a timeline because he's touched on it on a number of occasions and to the
- 24:38point where yeah, you can piece them all together and say, okay,
- 24:41well here it is, but just do that, you know. I feel
- 24:48like I already know what you are when it comes to the drug talk and
- 24:55money and stuff like that. But at the end of the day, you
- 24:59gotta out of music out there already, and now we start to get to
- 25:03the point where we like what else you got, And there are only a
- 25:08certain few that could easily come out and talk about the same exact thing that
- 25:14they always talk about, you know why, because they dropped like every two
- 25:18years, whereas with Benny. Sure he doesn't drop a full length project every
- 25:25year. Sometimes he takes that off. You have to drop an EP,
- 25:27but we don't. We hear from him all the time, so we don't
- 25:32get to miss him, and by the time he comes back, he's rapping
- 25:34about the same thing you've been rapping about the entire time. We didn't have
- 25:37an album, So it's a big disappointment for me as a Benny fan.
- 25:42Is it whack? No? If you're a Benny fan lyrically, you're gonna
- 25:48be with it. Some of the tracks, you're definitely gonna be with it.
- 25:51But I felt like the first two singles with the one would Lil Wayne,
- 25:57It's kind of grown on me a little bit. The joint with Stove
- 26:02God felt like it probably should have been better, and I think that's production
- 26:07more than it's those two. But at the end of the day, I
- 26:12just felt like, man, I was waiting. I was waiting for this
- 26:18joint and it's just not what I thought it was gonna be. But I
- 26:22will say this, Benny usually releases an album and then he does like the
- 26:27plugs I met ep. I think when we get another one of those,
- 26:33it'll be exactly what we're looking for, you know, even if it's just
- 26:36the production, it's different. And I hate to say that because Alchemists and
- 26:40hit Boy a dope, but this ain't it. Man. What do y'all
- 26:44think? Do y'all like Benny the Butcher's brand new album? Everything or everything?
- 26:48Everybody? Can't go? Leave your comments in a comments section below.
