Transcript
- 0:19I'm Jessica and this is Teba K Rambles, where a couple of
- 0:22friends review Korean dramas and we've done it.
- 0:25We have come to the final episode of season 5 and I wanted
- 0:30to go out on a banger, so I brought with me my friend Mina
- 0:33from the K Pop Bookshelf podcast.
- 0:35How are you, Mina? I'm well, how are you, I?
- 0:38Am doing so well. I told you that I had a crazy
- 0:40week. I had a crazy day and I did not
- 0:43have enough time to watch this show.
- 0:47But we are here. I have finished Sky Castle and
- 0:51we are going to talk at length about it.
- 0:55I wanted to watch the show for a really long time.
- 0:58As a matter of fact, I had been on the docket for a while and I
- 1:01it kind of fell through on a previous season, but I had told
- 1:04you about it already in admi was like, I'm going to do Sky
- 1:07Castle. And you were thrilled.
- 1:11You were super excited about Sky Castle.
- 1:15And then I felt awful, but it kind of fell through.
- 1:19And so I was like, you know what?
- 1:21I have to bring Mina on for Sky Castle because Mina was like
- 1:24110% on top of this, like she had watched Sky Castle.
- 1:29I have to do this with Mina like there's nobody else.
- 1:32So here we are. Mina, it's been several months
- 1:36since I asked you to do this episode.
- 1:39God, I am stressed. I have to be honest with you,
- 1:42that show, this show is very stressful.
- 1:44Mm. Hmm.
- 1:47Mm hmm. It is not an easy watch.
- 1:50Not an easy watch, not for the faint of heart.

- 2:50You guys are amazing and I, I love having you guys as patrons.
- 2:54So, Mina, Are you ready for this?
- 2:57I'm ready. OK, so I'm going to get us
- 2:59kicked off here with the Wikipedia synopsis.
- 3:02This is the better synopsis that I read that was a lot more
- 3:05general. But I think I wanted to go more
- 3:07general than specific on this one because when people hear
- 3:11maybe the title Sky Castle, I'm not sure people necessarily get
- 3:16what it's about. And if you go with like the
- 3:19names of like so and so's a neurosurgeon and so and so's the
- 3:22wife of the neurosurgeon, like it just doesn't.
- 3:24I don't know if it necessarily hits like just giving you the
- 3:27broad strokes here. It is a satirical series that
- 3:31closely looks at the materialistic desires of upper
- 3:34class parents in South Korea and how they ruthlessly secure the
- 3:38successes of their families at the cost of destroying others
- 3:41lives. The drama revolves around the
- 3:44lives of housewives residing in a luxurious residential area
- 3:48called Sky Castle, which is a reference to the elite
- 3:52universities in suburban Seoul. And those universities are Seoul
- 3:57National University, SNU for short, Korea University and
- 4:02Yonsei University. So those 3 universities make up
- 4:06the acronym SKY. And so Sky Castle is where
- 4:10wealthy doctors and professors live.
- 4:13The wives are determined to make their husbands more successful
- 4:16and to raise their children to be top students who will be
- 4:20accepted at the best universities.
- 4:22So they use every possible way to get that and we they do me in
- 4:28every possible way. This show aired from November
- 4:332018 to January 2019. It is a winter show.
- 4:37So I guess it's appropriate that we're doing this kind of on the
- 4:40cusp of fall and winter. We're heading into the cooler
- 4:43months. This show is 20 episodes long
- 4:47and it is directed by Johan Pak and he's directed things like
- 4:52The Atypical Family from this year 2024, Snowdrop from
- 4:582021-2022, and Secret Healer More Than a Maid.
- 5:03Who are you? Have you seen some of these
- 5:05shows from this director Mina? Actually, I don't think so, no.
- 5:11All right. You watched Snowdrop though?
- 5:14I did watch Snowdrop. Boy did I watch Snowdrop.
- 5:20There is a whole episode on Snowdrop that we did.
- 5:23If you want to scroll back in your podcast feed and listen to
- 5:26that, you can. It was a ride, not a good one it
- 5:29was, but it was a ride. And then Sky Castle was written
- 5:33by Yu Hyung NI. She also wrote Snowdrop, so they
- 5:38are frequent collaborators. She also wrote Golden Cross
- 5:42Bridal mask Home Sweet Homes Scales of Providence Want to
- 5:45love Again Green Rose. Basically she's been writing
- 5:48since the mid 2000s and then this show stars.
- 5:52This is a. So many people, particularly
- 5:55large cast so. I'm not going to go through
- 5:57every single person in this cast.
- 5:59I'm just going to go through the mothers and the coordinator, if
- 6:04that makes any sense. OK, yes, yes, yes.
- 6:06I won't talk at length about what else they've been in, but I
- 6:10will say like who they are and who their character name is.
- 6:14So Yun Seiya plays no Sunghei and she has like the Bob haircut
- 6:21and she's she's married to the lawyer or the law professor.
- 6:26And then we have Yum Zhonga. She plays Han Sojin.
- 6:30She's like the main mom with the Pixie cut.
- 6:34And she's married to, like, an orthopedic surgeon.
- 6:39And then we have Iteran, who plays Issuim, and she's a
- 6:43children's book writer. And she moves into the Sky
- 6:46Castle neighbourhood with her husband, Tae Wyong, who plays
- 6:51the character Huang Teeong or Doctor Huang.
- 6:55And then we have on that, who plays Jenny.
- 7:01And she's also married to a doctor.
- 7:02She kind of has her hair swept to the side.
- 7:05She has long, flowing locks. Yeah, she's great.
- 7:10And then we have Kim so Hyung, who plays Kim Joo Hyung, who is
- 7:15the college entrance coordinator.
- 7:19She has, like, the severe look about her.
- 7:22I mean, they all look pretty severe and fierce.
- 7:26No nonsense. But she has like a short haircut
- 7:30that sort of swept back in the show.
- 7:32She kind of has a bun. Yeah, in the show, it's a bun.
- 7:35But in all the promos, she doesn't have the bun.
- 7:37So I think it was a good choice not to sell it with the bun, to
- 7:40be quite honest with you. So those are all of the, this is
- 7:44a female fronted female lead show for the most part, You
- 7:50know, you have their husbands, you have their sons in there and
- 7:53of course, their daughters, their children.
- 7:55But for the most part, it is, you know, the mothers that are
- 7:58taking center stage in this story, and that's our cast.
- 8:03I'm not going to go through everybody.
- 8:04There's just so many people in this show.
- 8:07So Mina, what what draws you to Sky Castle?
- 8:12Why do you love Sky Castle so much that you've rewatched it
- 8:15multiple times? Yeah, well, I like that.
- 8:21It's not heavy on like romance stuff, which is OK, but like,
- 8:25sometimes I don't want to watch that anymore.
- 8:26You know, you can only watch that for so long.
- 8:28And although it's about wealthy families and there's like a
- 8:31class thing, which a lot of dramas has, it's presented in a
- 8:35really different way. I think with a lot going on with
- 8:39the back story, some of the characters and the introduction
- 8:42of new characters and family dynamics, power dynamics, what's
- 8:47going on at work, the this air of prestige, this, this
- 8:50appearances of success and how that drives people basically
- 8:55almost crazy, if not actually crazy.
- 8:58So I just thought it had so many layers.
- 9:01And also my family is from Bangladesh.
- 9:04I'm I was born here. But so the whole like do well in
- 9:07school thing really rested. But to me, I mean, not to this
- 9:10extent, thankfully, but you know, yeah, I really like the
- 9:14show. Yeah, As a former academic
- 9:16overachiever, there was something really visceral about
- 9:19this show that I connected with. And I think that we're on the
- 9:22same wavelength about having, you know, an ethnic fan coming
- 9:28from an ethnic background. Like you're not necessarily
- 9:32driven to such extremes hopefully, but you know you are
- 9:38expected to do well in school. It's also the expectation of
- 9:41upward mobility. It's like you gotta do better
- 9:44than your parents or, you know, you gotta do better than the kid
- 9:46next door or whatever. Like there's a lot of
- 9:48competition built into some immigrant experiences, I think,
- 9:51or families of immigrants experiences.
- 9:53Absolutely, Absolutely. At least in the US.
- 9:56Well, yeah, at least in the US. Exactly.
- 9:59Yeah. So this is my first time
- 10:01watching Sky Castle. And what did you think?
- 10:04Lord have mercy. I so I didn't expect anything.
- 10:09Like, I didn't know really anything about it.
- 10:12I love walking into shows blind, especially when they're podcast
- 10:16watches. And I have heard good things
- 10:19like through the Grapevine that it's, you know, it's a very
- 10:23highly rated show and highly recommended.
- 10:26And I love that the poster was like all women.
- 10:29And for some reason, I was like, yeah, I need another like,
- 10:31search www.show where I can like, sink my teeth into it.
- 10:36And I had no idea about what it was about, that it was about the
- 10:42education system in Korea and how flawed it is and how crazy
- 10:47it makes the families, especially in this pressure
- 10:50cooker situation of these elite families.
- 10:56So Stan, this was a good joke. I fucking loved it.
- 11:00It was amazing. I was worried you might not.
- 11:03No good. No, it was so good.
- 11:05It was very heavy, is very intense, very angsty.
- 11:10I think what was cool about it was that you kind of at least
- 11:14me, how I watch a show is you kind of start rooting for
- 11:17characters from the get go. You start reading characters,
- 11:20you're watching their every move and you're analyzing them, and
- 11:23you're like, OK, I'm totally on their side because XYZ and the
- 11:26other. But in this case, by the end of
- 11:30episode 1, the only thing that I knew was that there was going to
- 11:35be more feral murder happening. Like that was my, my, my
- 11:42prediction was they're going to start killing each other.
- 11:44Like it's going to get worse, way worse than it already is,
- 11:50and that's not really. Much ugly it's gonna get so.
- 11:53Fucking ugly was my assumption, and my assumption was absolutely
- 11:58correct, and that wasn't much of an assumption.
- 12:01This is very much in a mock Jong esque.
- 12:05Style. I know that's not your favorite
- 12:07style. But it's not my favorite style.
- 12:09But I fucking ate this shit up. It was so good.
- 12:12I. That's what I mean, yeah.
- 12:13Like it has Mok Jung, yes, kind of vibes.
- 12:16But then there's it's more intellectual, Yeah.
- 12:18It's more like cerebral, yes. Exactly.
- 12:22Exactly. So it wasn't kind of look lower
- 12:25class or like baser, low brow, low brow, kind of like Mok Jung.
- 12:32There wasn't a lot of like food slinging and stuff.
- 12:34But it was good. Like it was juicy.
- 12:38It was intense. And I loved the energy of it.
- 12:42And I love the steaks that they just kept getting higher.
- 12:46And I loved that the characters that I thought were that I was
- 12:50rooting for and that I thought had a lot of grit.
- 12:54And I was like, OK, I understand where they're coming from.
- 12:57I totally want them to succeed. They turned out to be totally
- 13:02unhinged. Like I was like, is there
- 13:03increasingly it gets increasingly more unhinged.
- 13:10But not in a way that you're like, I can't watch this
- 13:11anymore. No no no definitely not.
- 13:14I was like actually I need a press plate right now and it's
- 13:173:00 AM. All in all, really solid show,
- 13:22one that I would wholeheartedly recommend to people, even if
- 13:26you're more of a romance girly. I think that there's a lot of
- 13:32social commentary. As I said in the Wikipedia
- 13:35synopsis, it's satirical. So it's going to make a comment,
- 13:39it's going to say something. I love that about it.
- 13:43I I thought it, I thought it nailed everything that it was
- 13:46trying to do. Yes, I think the acting was
- 13:49crazy, incredible, So good. Everybody acted their asses off.
- 13:54The kids, everybody, everybody. Everybody.
- 13:56The kids, the adults, everybody, and there was quite a lot of
- 14:00comedic relief, especially like a certain family in particular
- 14:04was very funny and there was a lot of comedic relief.
- 14:09Moments are out, which sort of broke the tension.
- 14:13Yeah. That helped you kind of get
- 14:16through some of those heavier episodes.
- 14:19I mean, even if they weren't there, I think it would have
- 14:22still been a really compelling watch.
- 14:24Yeah, I mean, it would have been like a really straight drama
- 14:26without so many Comic Relief moments.
- 14:28You'd still be really good and solid drama.
- 14:32Yeah, this is straight crazy though.
- 14:34Like this is crazy through the vein.
- 14:38So if that's not your, if that's not your bag, don't watch it if.
- 14:41You don't want to be stressed out if you don't want your blood
- 14:43pressure raised, maybe. Don't.
- 14:45Yeah, because it's going to infuriate you.
- 14:46Honestly, if it will infuriate you, it will make you really
- 14:52angry in a lot of instances. If you're not into that, if you
- 14:57want all the warm and fuzzies, babes, this is not the show for
- 15:01you. This is not the show for you at
- 15:03all, I think. This show at the time of airing,
- 15:08became the highest rated series in Korean cable television
- 15:11history. It received positive reviews
- 15:14across the board, won multiple awards, including four Pick Song
- 15:17Awards, the Director One of X Song Award, and currently, Sky
- 15:21Castle is the fourth highest Korean drama in cable television
- 15:26history. And I think you might be
- 15:29wondering, like, what are the what's the top ten?
- 15:30Maybe what's the top five? I have them here for you.
- 15:33So the top five, I'll give you the top 10 #10 is extraordinary
- 15:40Attorney Wu #9 is Mr. Sunshine. Coincidentally, Mina is on both
- 15:46of those episodes. Yeah, I don't know how that has.
- 15:51Nothing but the best. Mina is on both of those podcast
- 15:56reviews for Extraordinary, Tony Wu and Mr. Sunshine.
- 16:00So if you want to hear my thoughts and Mina's thoughts on
- 16:03those two top rated K dramas, scroll back in your podcast feed
- 16:08#8 Doctor cha #7, Guardian, The Lonely and Grey God also got an
- 16:13episode on that 6. Reply 1988 Five crash landing on
- 16:18you. Of course we covered that on
- 16:20season 1 of Tabak #4 just said with Sky castle #3 Queen of
- 16:25Tears just happened this year, unseated Sky Castle this year #2
- 16:32is reborn rich and then number one is the world of the married
- 16:37I. Still need to watch?
- 16:40Yeah, so do I. So do I.
- 16:41Maybe we'll reunite for World of the Married.
- 16:45Top rated K drama on cable. Yes, the top rated K drama.
- 16:50All right, so I have here. Culture critic Dong Da Kyung
- 16:56says the drama has received attention from viewers because
- 16:59it successfully strikes an uneasy chord while heightening
- 17:03viewers as curiosity over the lengths to which rich elite
- 17:07families obsess over education. He also says, and I quote, in
- 17:11terms of education, the drama satisfies people's desire to
- 17:15peek into what those closed rich family circles do for their
- 17:19children. But at the same time, viewers
- 17:21feel uneasiness when watching their stories.
- 17:23Those two conflicting emotions, wanting to know but feeling
- 17:27uncomfortable makes for some interesting chemistry in the
- 17:30minds of drama fans and puts it on the must see drama list.
- 17:35So there is some truth to the fiction is what we're trying to
- 17:40say here, that a lot of people see this hyper competitive
- 17:46education system in the pressure to enter a prestigious
- 17:49university as being part and parcel of the real Korean
- 17:56society experience. They're actually making a
- 18:00Japanese version of this show, I don't know if.
- 18:02You saw, yes, they're making a remake in Japanese, and I think
- 18:05there's a sequel, actually. And I can't remember what the
- 18:07sequel to Sky Castle is called. Really.
- 18:10Yeah, there's this. I saw it on my drama list that
- 18:14it was like labeled as a sequel and I was like, the hell.
- 18:16Anyway, So this, this definitely triggered a lot of people.
- 18:23I think it tapped into something that was already in the
- 18:25zeitgeist, already in people's minds, because whoever has a
- 18:31child in Korea, whoever has a high school student in Korea is
- 18:36going through this process and trying to, you know, forge a
- 18:42path here because everybody is pretty much excellent.
- 18:47And that's the problem. How do you distinguish yourself
- 18:50from everybody else who's excellent?
- 18:52And that's when this hyper competitive nature really rears
- 18:58its ugly head. And not that the US system isn't
- 19:02competitive, but geez, not not like this.
- 19:07Thankfully. Thankfully, and we've had
- 19:11scandals of our own. Geez, do you remember that
- 19:14scandal with the Full House lady?
- 19:17Aunt Becky? Oh my God, when Aunt Becky, she
- 19:21went. To jail she oh.
- 19:23No, you're right. She went to jail for did she?
- 19:27Buy her sleep buying a Yeah, like her child's place at I
- 19:30think USC. Yeah, Southern California, if
- 19:33I'm not mistaken. Yeah, but there was like this
- 19:35whole thing of at least in Southern California of rich
- 19:38people staging like that. My kids on the water polo team,
- 19:43though, they don't even know how to swim and like lying and
- 19:45basically on applications, paying someone like a
- 19:48coordinator to fix basically an application such that they'd be
- 19:52more likely to get chosen to go. And what was interesting, not
- 19:56that University of Southern California is a bad school or
- 19:58anything, but it was like just kind of random schools that the
- 20:01people who went to jail for it wasn't necessarily like Harvard
- 20:03or something it. Wasn't even the Ivy.
- 20:05Yeah, it was sort of weird that like, oh, is it that serious to
- 20:08go to USC? But yeah, I guess it is.
- 20:09So yeah, Becky went to jail from Full House.
- 20:12Yeah, and I think her daughter's an influencer.
- 20:14So it all worked out. I guess It all worked out.
- 20:17Her destiny came true. We don't mean to laugh, but like
- 20:23you have to laugh to keep from crying sometimes.
- 20:25I guess because it's just wild. It's wild out here, so it's not
- 20:31like it doesn't happen over here.
- 20:33The craziness and the pressure to do well.
- 20:39That there's funnel schools for the Ivy's.
- 20:42I think that this show reminded me heavily of Dead Poets
- 20:47Society, which is one of my favorite movies.
- 20:50How? Dead poets.
- 20:52Society. Well I just I'm thinking of the
- 20:55teacher student. Relationship.
- 20:56No, no. I was like, that's not it.
- 20:58No, no, no. It's really.
- 21:00My captain? No.
- 21:01It's really Neil's relationship with his father that is the crux
- 21:06of the whole movie in the third act that reminded me heavily of,
- 21:12you know, this, this show and also the broader message of
- 21:17don't conform, forge your own path and all all of that good
- 21:21stuff that, oh, captain, my captain, Mr. Keating taught us
- 21:25in Dead Poets Society, these sort of values.
- 21:28And as a matter of fact, the show Sky Castle invokes, it
- 21:32invokes Dead Poets Society. That's right.
- 21:35At the end, we had like one of the final episodes.
- 21:37They're like, do you remember when we were kids and we watched
- 21:40Dead Poets Society and we said all this stuff and we weren't
- 21:42going to do this? And I was like, oh, so I wasn't
- 21:44crazy. Like they were actually calling
- 21:46attention to it. Yeah.
- 21:48So anyway, I and I like that about the show, that it's almost
- 21:53like media is reconciling with these ills in society in a
- 22:00delayed way because this isn't new.
- 22:03Like this problem that they've had.
- 22:06It has been covered in other K dramas.
- 22:08It's been covered in other movies and obviously in the
- 22:13news, different craziness happening, but this show was
- 22:20simply addicting to watch. And it's like watching like Real
- 22:25Housewives at the same time, like, there's a lot of like
- 22:28cattiness happening between the the moms.
- 22:32Oh, but the cattiness of the dads, oh, that was, that was
- 22:35crazy. That too.
- 22:37Like it's like a medical drama. Real Housewives.
- 22:41Dead Poets Society, a school drama, like all mixed in one.
- 22:48Then it becomes kind of like a murder mystery like in the last
- 22:52half of the show. It is honestly a lot of things.
- 22:56It touches on a lot of genres, micro genres as well, and that
- 23:02is pretty fun and unique about it.
- 23:05That keeps you interested in coming back for more.
- 23:08Obviously. I think the way that it was shot
- 23:10as well was particularly good. I think it the cinematography of
- 23:15it, they would have shots of the camera would be inside the car
- 23:20and then someone would get out of the car and they would follow
- 23:24the person, but they would pull the camera through the car
- 23:26window and like keep walking with the person.
- 23:30And I'm like, Oh my God, I can't.
- 23:33These sort of things are technically cool to do.
- 23:37And so they were doing a lot of that, a lot of close up shots of
- 23:40hands and feet of characters, so many showing hesitation,
- 23:45resolve, anguish, nervousness, restraint, control, characters
- 23:50straightening objects like in their vicinity, like a towel on
- 23:53a rack or a phone on a table. And these things just playing up
- 23:59their characterization and parts of themselves which they want to
- 24:03display, right? They want to show, oh, this
- 24:06person is in control of their surroundings.
- 24:09They're a controlling person. They want to have everything
- 24:14their way. So I love those close up shots.
- 24:17I love those cool handhelds that they were chewing from the car
- 24:21through the window and like onward walking with the subject.
- 24:26It was cool and a lot of shaky Cam that they were doing, like a
- 24:31lot of shaky Cam. I really like to the wardrobe
- 24:36and sets because you kind of got and we get we'll get into more
- 24:39later. But like going from a place like
- 24:40people's mansions in this like Stony neighborhood.
- 24:43You know, very Or Tony not Yeah. Mediterranean.
- 24:46Kind of. Looking and yeah, yeah, it was
- 24:48just which by the way, there is really, I mean, this is at the
- 24:50time the drama came out, there were articles about how there
- 24:53really is a sky castle. Ask a neighborhood in Seoul
- 24:57somewhere or like in a suburb of and yeah, I'm literally not
- 25:01surprised. No, right.
- 25:03It's not surprising. The juxtaposition, though, of
- 25:05like going from a Tony neighborhood in these mansions
- 25:07and whatever to kids going to the like below their Kuman
- 25:12Khagwan Academy convenience store, you know, and like
- 25:16mingling with the people. Yeah.
- 25:19For like, it was very interesting that in like these,
- 25:22the decor of like the very stringent households and the
- 25:24very kind of stark design, interior design.
- 25:28And then the ones that are a little more homey and the
- 25:30because lady had like house, other lady had house plans.
- 25:32And then the wardrobe too, Like I was saying the the clothes,
- 25:36the elegant wives wear and then the doctors, you know, walking
- 25:40around in their lab coats and stuff.
- 25:42And but then, you know, sometimes kids are just wanting
- 25:44to be kids, but some of the kids are wearing super kind of stuffy
- 25:47pitch looking pajamas and like you can tell these are like rich
- 25:49people. So I found the wardrobe too to
- 25:53be and setting to be very interesting as well.
- 25:55Yeah, yeah, all of it just made for a very elite not to use
- 26:01Elite again, but like it wasn't an Elite drama.
- 26:04I I felt that it totally deserved that number four spot
- 26:08or the top ten spot. It was, it was great.
- 26:11I thought, I thought everybody hype it up, hype it up as much
- 26:14as you want. It's amazing.
- 26:17Yes. Is there a character that you
- 26:19really connected with? Oh, yeah.
- 26:23OK. Wait.
- 26:24So many because you had. Hold on.
- 26:27I'm going to make sure I get the names right.
- 26:29So first of all, would have to be the mom who moves in New mom
- 26:34in town, East Suim. She's a children's book author,
- 26:37and she kind of does not belong there, really.
- 26:40But she's there because her husband's a doctor and he
- 26:42basically takes a position over because someone else becomes
- 26:46indisposed, actually and. Yeah, we can't spoil that much,
- 26:51but yeah. Yeah, they have to leave the
- 26:53neighborhood is all I'm saying. And so anyways, so they can move
- 26:56in, new family moves in. And then she's basically like
- 26:59kind of our eyes and ears in a way, like us, the viewer, unless
- 27:03you are a Sky Castle resident in real life, because she is the
- 27:08one seeing it as an outsider at first.
- 27:09And then she kind of though, you know, gets involved in some of
- 27:12this a little bit. And then henna, the child henna,
- 27:16the student henna. I really was, I, I don't know
- 27:20why I felt like I identified with her.
- 27:21I think because she as a student had this sense of like justice
- 27:26or like self righteousness, both, I guess.
- 27:29And I don't know, I think when you were some of us when we were
- 27:32teenagers, especially if you weren't super rich, like a
- 27:36little bit like have those moments or whatever where like
- 27:38this whole system sucks. Like, you know, So yeah, how
- 27:42about you? I really loved Hannah because
- 27:45she was really bombastic and fierce.
- 27:48She was not afraid of the grown-ups.
- 27:52She was not afraid to face off against the adults.
- 27:54There were many points that she would be threatening or
- 27:58condescending or rude to them, and rightfully so, you know,
- 28:02rightfully so. You're kind of like, yeah, stick
- 28:05it to them. She never backed down and she
- 28:09always just wanted what was best for her.
- 28:12Within the confines of what is righteous, you know, what is
- 28:18right for and fair for everybody in this school, for every
- 28:22student. I liked that she was kind of
- 28:25this a little. Bit of well, she wasn't above a
- 28:28little bit of blackmail. Exactly.
- 28:31I was like, she was playing dirty and I was, I was about to
- 28:33say that she was like playing dirty.
- 28:36And The thing is, she was beating them at their own game.
- 28:40Yeah, she's one upping them like in every turn, and it's kind of
- 28:43awesome to see that. Exactly.
- 28:45So I loved her. I loved her so much.
- 28:48And then I got to be honest, I loved our Bob cut girl, Sunghe,
- 28:54who was married to the lawyer. So she was also one of my
- 28:59favorites because I thought that she had a resilience that some
- 29:04of the other moms didn't express.
- 29:07And you could tell that she was very intelligent and she was
- 29:13very educated, and she felt deeply for the struggle of her
- 29:20children. And she was fighting the
- 29:23patriarchy. It was almost like she was
- 29:24fighting the patriarchy within her own home before fighting the
- 29:29larger system that were at play in like the society at large,
- 29:35because she was basically living with the tyrant.
- 29:39Pyramid Dad. Yeah, Yeah, My, my cousins, I
- 29:42watch this together. We called him Pyramid Dad.
- 29:43It is. We still call him that.
- 29:44He's in other dramas. And you're like Pyramid Dad.
- 29:46It's pyramid drama. No, no, no, I agree completely.
- 29:49He's pyramid dad and he's utterly ridiculous.
- 29:53Like you can't take him seriously, but he is very
- 29:57intimidating at at a lot of junctures in the story and and
- 30:01in their family story in particular.
- 30:04And I felt incredibly, you know, sympathetic and empathetic Tour
- 30:08Tung Hei as a mother, you know, because she's trying to do right
- 30:13by her kid. She's not trying to break up the
- 30:14family. She's trying to play the
- 30:17peacemaker, humble herself all the time.
- 30:21But she is clearly smarter than her husband.
- 30:24So, like, she's trying to play within his arbitrary patriarchal
- 30:30rules. And he demands respect.
- 30:33He wants this. He wants to be the breadwinner,
- 30:35He has control of the family finances, and she's like working
- 30:39within all of this shit. That's like working against her.
- 30:44And so I just thought that she had a great story, a great arc,
- 30:49and I love how she handles her biz by the end of the show.
- 30:53She's such an advocate for her kids, which some of the other
- 30:56moms are not in the same way that she is.
- 30:59Yeah. Yeah, and I thought that she had
- 31:01a better relationship with her children from jump like from day
- 31:05one, her and her children were on the same page.
- 31:10They, you know, understood each other.
- 31:12There was a, a bond there that they didn't share with their
- 31:15father because he was constantly cracking the whip and constantly
- 31:21telling them to study. And and it was a a very
- 31:24fractured relationship or one that was never built between him
- 31:29and his children. So she put in the I don't want
- 31:33to say work because it's I don't want to consider it work.
- 31:35But she loved on her kids and they loved her back.
- 31:39Like it was very simple and it always was that simple, you
- 31:44know, like he didn't get it, Like the dad just didn't get it.
- 31:46So anyway. Well, he just like commanded and
- 31:49demanded respect and she and like saw it as a more reciprocal
- 31:53relationship, like the one with her kids.
- 31:54I mean, that relationship is reciprocal.
- 31:56It's not like I gave birth to you, so you must respect me or I
- 31:58gave birth to you and you must, you know, do this.
- 32:00On the other, she was more like, oh, they're humans, yeah.
- 32:04And they have feelings and rights and this and that too.
- 32:07So, you know, I, I think she was just more humanistic.
- 32:12I don't know if that's right. The word like compared to some
- 32:14of the other, the way some of their moms ran their households
- 32:17or, you know, the she definitely had a more built a rapport, saw
- 32:22them as people consider their feelings and not only status,
- 32:25grades, tests, you know, exactly what people think.
- 32:29So. I loved her, loved her
- 32:30character. I was going to refer to
- 32:33Snowdrop, but you haven't watched the Snowdrop yet because
- 32:36Kim Hei Yin plays Yeso, who is one of the students.
- 32:40She is our Pixie cut lady's daughter and she is like at the
- 32:45centre of everything, right Yeso?
- 32:49I was convinced I wasn't going to like forgive Yeso by the end
- 32:53of the show. I know.
- 32:57Because I got to be honest, this actress in Snowdrop, I have not
- 33:02forgiven her for what she did in Snowdrop.
- 33:05OK. This is a lot of like the energy
- 33:09and the shit she was giving in Snowdrop.
- 33:11So I was like, yeah, I know who you really are, Kim.
- 33:15Hey, Yoon. Everybody knows her from Lovely
- 33:18Runner this year and they have fallen head over heels for her
- 33:21this year if they hadn't watched her in anything else.
- 33:24Honestly, she's a 2 faced bitch. I I'm sorry, like I know that
- 33:29she's an actress but it, it was too real.
- 33:32It was too, too good. She did too good of a job and
- 33:35Snowdrop too good of a job in Sky Castle.
- 33:38But she's a little more redeemable towards the end of
- 33:40Sky. Castle exactly.
- 33:41By the end of Sky Castle I was like, oh thank God.
- 33:45I thought her the girl who played her little sister EG one
- 33:48who played Kanye. Ben was incredible as an
- 33:52actress. So good and like giving major
- 33:55little sister vibes, neglected child vibes, not the favorite
- 33:59vibes so well. And then her bond with Henna
- 34:02also believable compared to like, you know, the way she's
- 34:05really into the other characters was so good, I thought.
- 34:08And even like with the book mom and like showing moments of
- 34:12vulnerability with some people or like whatever.
- 34:14I just thought she was so good and I wish she would get give
- 34:17her something, give her an award.
- 34:18Give her an award, yeah. Is there anything else you want
- 34:23to say about Sky Castle that isn't spoiler?
- 34:25We have literally not really spoiled.
- 34:28I know there are some like major things that we're just
- 34:32sidestepping. Well, I wanna just mention just
- 34:35for the listeners in case anyone doesn't know like a little bit
- 34:38as far as what I know from what I've read, which take it with a
- 34:40grain of salt because I don't know everything, I'm not Korean,
- 34:42but like it. Korea is one of the countries
- 34:44where it's like if you don't do well in the CSATS, as they call
- 34:47it there and similar to our Sats, but their Csats college
- 34:51scholastic aptitude test or whatever, it's so it's so
- 34:54serious that like they can't fly planes overhead during the exam.
- 35:00Like they reroute planes so that they won't fly over schools.
- 35:03They are there's like certain songs that are like banned or
- 35:06something. And I don't really understand
- 35:08that, but I think it's because like become like ear worms.
- 35:10So when you're in the test and you're freaking out and you're
- 35:12like, what is, you know, this math, like what's the quadratic
- 35:14formula? And in your head you're like
- 35:16ring Ding Dong, ring Ding Dong. That was that was a bad song.
- 35:20So, so anyway, but it's so serious 'cause it's 1 of this
- 35:24country. Yeah, no, I could see myself
- 35:26doing that in that situation. Like I'd be like, I have to do
- 35:29something important. But your head is doing like, you
- 35:30know, some song. Anyways, they it, it's one of
- 35:34those countries where if you this is a make it or break it
- 35:36test. So if you don't do well, your
- 35:39life is kind of over. And actually, especially during
- 35:42the economic Asian economic crisis in like the late 90s,
- 35:44from what I've read and heard, not an expert, a lot of people
- 35:48became like idols because they're like either like,
- 35:51listen, I'm not not super scholarly, I'm not super
- 35:53academic, but I'm pretty. It's not really my thing.
- 35:56Yeah. Or like I can become pretty.
- 35:57Plastic surgery is a big thing in South Korea.
- 36:01You know, you can become, yeah, you can become pretty.
- 36:04You can learn how to dance a little and sing a little.
- 36:07And so a lot of people just went to, you know, if they weren't
- 36:10from Seoul, maybe went up there to like audition, try to become
- 36:13famous instead, because this is such a because if you don't do
- 36:16on the CSAT, from what I understand, your, you won't get
- 36:20into a sky school, the Seoul University, Korean National
- 36:24University and Yonsei, which is kind of the goal.
- 36:27Everyone like here, it's nice to get into Ivy League, but like
- 36:30your life goes on if you don't. But there it's like no like to
- 36:34for some people. No, it doesn't like not enough
- 36:36because there's a status association.
- 36:38And then not only that, you have to become either like a doctor
- 36:41or dentist or lawyer or something.
- 36:43I think are, and again, my family's from Bangladesh, so
- 36:45they're saying same kind of thing where like certain
- 36:47professions are seen as way more prestigious and other
- 36:49professions are not worth it. And so like even my parents were
- 36:53like, no, you can't major in music because that's ridiculous.
- 36:57So, but I didn't become one of those things, the doctor lawyer
- 37:00thing. But yeah, so so that's kind of
- 37:04kind of the background or back story to the premise of this
- 37:08drama. And so because of that, there is
- 37:10a lot of lengths people will go to to succeed.
- 37:12And we have that a little bit here, the Kuman, aforementioned
- 37:15Kuman that we also have in the US or like whatever kind of
- 37:17types of schools or SAT prep books and classes and MCAT,
- 37:22LSAT, all that stuff that standardized tests, we have to
- 37:24get into higher education and higher fields of study.
- 37:28There's a lot of people who if you can afford that, you have a
- 37:31one up up, right. So if you magnify that by like a
- 37:34gajillion, that's what sky Castle is.
- 37:36These people have the means to like pay for someone to
- 37:39basically like almost guarantee that your their kid is going to
- 37:43get into Seoul National University Medical school in
- 37:45this case, so. Yeah, SNU Med School is what you
- 37:51would read on the subtitles, but that's Seoul National University
- 37:53Med School. And absolutely they are paying
- 37:59for a coach to come in and not only one-on-one teach their
- 38:04child and tutor their child, but they have a whole team of people
- 38:10behind them that are specializing in different
- 38:13subjects and are also helping them and coaching them, teaching
- 38:18them their subjects. You know, I think there was a
- 38:21big emphasis in the show of teaching to the tests.
- 38:24Well, because the end goal here is not like you're because think
- 38:27of the schools used are sorry, subjects you study in high
- 38:29school in this like we study English, in their case Korean,
- 38:33or they may also study English as like a foreign language.
- 38:35So it's like how we may study whatever language and those are
- 38:38like important skills. But if you're going to go to Med
- 38:40school, how much are you really going to need, let's say, Latin,
- 38:44German, whatever you may not, you're right.
- 38:46So, so even though you need, but you need to do well on the test,
- 38:48if that's part of your, of the Csats or whatever.
- 38:50So then you need to hire a tutor to like.
- 38:53So you just nail that part of the test so that you go to Seoul
- 38:55National University medical School, become a famous surgeon.
- 38:58Your family can like, you know, live, bask in your glory and
- 39:02you've honored them and all those kind of yeah.
- 39:03So I think that's why like the the goals goal is not like
- 39:07academic aptitude actually. It's just like nail this test
- 39:11and get a gleaming application. And applications even for jobs
- 39:15in Korea, there's a lot of personal information.
- 39:17It's like a whole packet. And so as far as I know.
- 39:20So like, like for example, people's photos go on their job
- 39:24application. I have done episodes in my
- 39:26podcast in the past where I talked about how mental health
- 39:29and psychology and counseling, These are things that some
- 39:32people in Korea up until recently or even maybe still now
- 39:35are reticent to seek that kind of medical care because they
- 39:38feel like it will end up on their record somewhere that
- 39:41their future employers could go into or potential employers can
- 39:44go into and see like, oh, you've been in therapy, so I'm not
- 39:46going to hire you, that kind of thing.
- 39:48So there's like a lot riding, like everything rides on all
- 39:51this stuff. And then the rest of your life
- 39:53is shaped and formed by your high school experience.
- 39:56And so that's why in these, for these elite families, it's like
- 39:58maintaining the status because you don't want like that one day
- 40:01that's big in this story is like 3 generations of doctors who
- 40:04went to Seoul National University or my child was the
- 40:05number one student in all of Korea when his graduating class.
- 40:09These are big deals and you don't want your child to fall
- 40:12behind now because now precedence has been set by that
- 40:14your ancestors or your, your relatives, whatever.
- 40:17And so it's like you have to keep up the whole for your whole
- 40:20family. So you're bearing the burden for
- 40:21your whole family. And that's a little difficult
- 40:24for, I think some people who didn't grow up anywhere near
- 40:30that level of competition and pressure and family prestige.
- 40:38I I mean, it was difficult for me to even understand.
- 40:41I was like, I don't get it. Like half the time they're like,
- 40:45we need a third generation, third generation of doctors,
- 40:48like that third generation of doctors.
- 40:50And I was like, what the fuck you talking about?
- 40:52Like you have two generations. Like that's amazing as it is.
- 40:55Like, can't you just like take it and leave?
- 40:57Like you, you need a third generation for real.
- 41:01Like it's crazy. It all reflects back on the mob,
- 41:05like it's at least from when you watch Sky Castle, you get this
- 41:07idea of like whatever success your child has is a reflection
- 41:10of you. And that's why the moms are so
- 41:12kind of bat shit crazy about everything because they they're
- 41:15like, it's a competition about how good of a mom are you not
- 41:18good enough? If your, if your child fails,
- 41:20it's on you, even though you're not the one who went and took
- 41:22the test. And but that's why they bend
- 41:25over backwards to make them succeed at like any cost.
- 41:27Almost so. Right.
- 41:29You touched on something that about the moms is that the
- 41:34husbands and the even the pro coach that they hire in the show
- 41:40expect all of the mothers to be stay at home moms and be a slave
- 41:46to their children's education and success, not work.
- 41:49Oregon have a career and if they do have a job it's seen as a
- 41:54faux pas. Like it's the child's success
- 41:56will be in jeopardy because they don't have this slave labor
- 42:01picking them up, taking them to school or to the Hawk 1,
- 42:04advocating for them, researching how best to achieve their goals,
- 42:07making nutritious food for them, constantly being on their ass
- 42:11about studying. And that whole concept of this
- 42:17gender norm was very intriguing to me.
- 42:21I think I will say this just based on how much Korean news I
- 42:24watch, I think the reality for most Korean people is that both
- 42:27parents work. But the issue here is they're
- 42:29they're living in Sky Castle. So this is like an added layer
- 42:33of like this is maybe not every Korean person's experience or
- 42:35like your mom stays at home. It makes you, you know,
- 42:37nutritionally adequate all the time.
- 42:39Whatever it's it's more and like the correct humidity of your
- 42:42room for studying and ample lighting, blah, blah.
- 42:45But that is what's happening in Sky Castle because it's a very
- 42:47exaggerated version of it's a pressure that many Koreans.
- 42:50Yeah, it's satirical exactly. But there is really AI mean.
- 42:53Who knows what goes on there. There really is.
- 42:54Or our neighborhoods that are similar to this, where it's like
- 42:57successful people all living together in this compound.
- 43:01It is a. Compound it is, but the point of
- 43:04it, I think here is like, this is such an exaggerated version.
- 43:07And that's why maybe some people who are Korean probably did
- 43:10identify with it because they maybe had some level of like of
- 43:13this intensity, but not to this extent.
- 43:15This is just like, crazy over the top version because they're
- 43:17trying to also maintain their status.
- 43:19We live. If you live in Sky Castle and
- 43:21your kid doesn't go to a sky school, then what's the point?
- 43:23You know? So yeah.
- 43:25Exactly. So I really thought that that
- 43:28was interesting about the moms and how it might be a little
- 43:32outmoded like by today's standards to have to expect a
- 43:36woman to quit her job when she gets married or when she's
- 43:40pregnant to stay home with the child.
- 43:42Especially because of the cost of living in Korea and how you
- 43:46need a dual income to just subsist and all this stuff.
- 43:50And even to raise a child, how expensive it is, you need the
- 43:53dual income. But I mean, I think the gender
- 43:57norm is changing out of necess, out of economic necessity.
- 44:00I think it is and it isn't because a lot of the articles I
- 44:03read both about Japan, there were a lot of articles a few
- 44:06years ago. So I'm an elder millennial.
- 44:08And if I had talked about the book Kim Jong born 1982.
- 44:11And so that's about a kind of generic Korean elder millennial
- 44:14who was sold this thing. This is the first generation of
- 44:16girls and boys, but girls and kids that were told like, if
- 44:19you're a girl, you can do anything.
- 44:20And like, you know, this in America, like women couldn't
- 44:23open credit cards till like 1960, whatever, whatever.
- 44:26It was like kind of recently, you can do this and that without
- 44:28your husband or your father's permission, even in America.
- 44:30So in Korea, they're, they were also sold this idea of like, you
- 44:34know, you're not like your mom's or your grandmother's.
- 44:36You can like earn a living and be just like a man and go to
- 44:38school and become a doctor, go to Seoul National University.
- 44:42And when we were younger elder millennials, like it wasn't as
- 44:44coming to have as many women in the career of medicine and
- 44:48doctors, but now, you know, afterwards it was and lawyers
- 44:51and everything. And but the problem in these
- 44:53articles, there's a series of that were in the New York Times.
- 44:55Again, this was about Japan, but it's very similar to Korea where
- 44:58and also even America, you can extrapolate, which is that the
- 45:01men still don't do for whatever reason, the gender norms kind of
- 45:04just happen anyway. Like who's doing the bulk of the
- 45:06laundry? Who's doing the bulk of the
- 45:07childcare? Who knows their kids teacher's
- 45:09name? Who knows their kids?
- 45:10Pediatrician's. Name.
- 45:11It's usually. The mothers, even though they're
- 45:13working just as many hours and in Korea and Japan they work way
- 45:15more than our like a standard kind of 40 hours a week.
- 45:17They're working like 56. One politician want to make
- 45:20raised to like 60 hours a week in Korea or something, the work
- 45:22week. So it's very crazy and hectic,
- 45:25yeah. But mom still does everything is
- 45:27what you're saying. Moms, I mean, I'm just saying
- 45:29like the gender norms in theory or on paper are it's becoming
- 45:33more equitable, but it's really kind of still there because also
- 45:36in Korea, there's still a lot of expectations about women this
- 45:40women that they're still working on their me too movement,
- 45:43feminism. There is still like a whole big
- 45:46prickly subject. So it's not quite and even here
- 45:50because again, if you look at like they don't do surveys for
- 45:52like the OECD, the economic something economic, whatever and
- 45:56of development. And they look at developed
- 45:58countries, developing countries and what is going on and who's
- 46:00doing what and how much money do they make?
- 46:02How much time off do they get for like maternity and this and
- 46:04that. They look at all these things.
- 46:05And when you look at the surveys for people who are from that
- 46:08elder millennial generation, again, who in theory they're
- 46:11raised to believe like men can do housework and women can be,
- 46:14you know, Wall Street brokers, whatever, that's great.
- 46:16They can, they do. But what actually happens is the
- 46:19amount of laundry done by husbands not the same.
- 46:22It's not actually equal for any of those three countries.
- 46:24I mentioned the US, Korea and Japan.
- 46:26It's still mostly women doing like who's making who's packing
- 46:30lunches, who's cooking dinner, who's dealing with I got to get
- 46:33picked up from school and The Who needs to meet with the
- 46:35teacher over bad grades? Who needs to buy a gift for
- 46:38someone's birthday, friend's birthday party?
- 46:40Like the dads have no clue still in all these countries, right?
- 46:42In a lot of case, obviously not every, not on men, not every
- 46:45dad. But I'm just saying, like from
- 46:46these surveys, economic surveys and things, that's what was has
- 46:49been found, including through this generation of people.
- 46:51Yep, Breach. So anyway, this show covers
- 46:57gender norms and gender roles very heavily, and you just got a
- 47:04lot of bad parents. Like everybody's pretty much
- 47:06rotten in the show. Like at one point or another,
- 47:10you're kind of sold that maybe they're not so bad and then they
- 47:14prove you wrong. So I love that.
- 47:17I love that you get proven wrong like that.
- 47:20Your assumptions about some characters and their, the way
- 47:24that they act, it changes and it flows and they're making really
- 47:29stupid decisions and they're just foul, like everybody's
- 47:33foul. So I enjoy that.
- 47:36I enjoy seeing some foul people get together and live in this
- 47:40giant, beautiful compound exclusive community and all
- 47:46their houses are like set up on a hill.
- 47:49It's got like the good Feng shui, like, you know what I'm
- 47:51saying? Like the back of the house is
- 47:53like facing the mountain and then the front.
- 47:56Facing Windows. Yes, yeah.
- 47:57Like it's all like you kind of get this feeling that it's
- 48:01literally all intentional. Long story short, I love
- 48:05watching stupid, selfish rich people have a crack at each
- 48:10other and drive their kids to madness and that's what this
- 48:14show is. So with that with that being
- 48:19said, I think we're going to get into the spoiler section.
- 48:21But before we do, Nina, what would you rate this show out of
- 48:25five soju bottles? I think I have to give it 5 out
- 48:28of five soju bottles. I've watched it like about that
- 48:31many times almost. I think I watched it four times.
- 48:33So. And I really like find something
- 48:35new each time that I, you know, I'm like, oh, yeah, this now
- 48:38what? Makes sense why that happened
- 48:40last time. I didn't quite grasp it then,
- 48:41but now I do. So I think you get a lot out of
- 48:43it with multiple viewings. That's always a sign of a good
- 48:45show, I would say. So, yeah.
- 48:47I think I'd give it 5 out of five soju bottles.
- 48:49Yeah, I'm feeling really generous tonight, so I'm going
- 48:51to give it 5 out of five, but honestly, I can't see my score
- 48:56really coming down. Maybe just because it's not that
- 48:59rewatchable. It's very, it's like a lot.
- 49:02It's so much so. I mean, I watched it maybe like
- 49:05once a year, OK, like OK or one and like 1 1/2 years went by and
- 49:09then I watched it. It's not like I I binge watch it
- 49:12every weekend. No it.
- 49:13Is way too heavy. But I feel like this sting might
- 49:16wear off a little bit over time because especially because you
- 49:20know what's happening when you don't know what's happening, you
- 49:22don't know what's coming next, you're kind of like, what the
- 49:25fuck? Like this isn't.
- 49:26Crazy. And you feel sort of trapped
- 49:30like the characters do. And I think that that trapped
- 49:35feeling, you won't get that on rewatch because you know, it's
- 49:40coming down the Pike. But 5 soldier bottles out of
- 49:43five, so excellent. Just an excellent all rounder of
- 49:48a show. A lot of drama, so much drama.
- 49:52So we're going to get into it. I got to be honest, I don't have
- 49:56no notes. I have no notes for this.
- 49:58We're just winging it. But we'll get into the spoiler
- 50:01section and we'll do our best right after this.
- 50:05Excuse me, I can't. You know I have.
- 50:12Oh, sorry. What?
- 50:20All right, we're on the other side of spoilers.
- 50:21So we are going to spoil exactly what happens in Sky Castle with
- 50:26no notes. So without any notes, we're
- 50:29going to talk about episode one first.
- 50:32Episode 1, you get introduced to all of the families and there is
- 50:37a party happening in celebration of one of the kids getting
- 50:43accepted into SNU Med school, and there's like a foxtrot
- 50:50happening. After Ndas are signed, there's a
- 50:53force. What is it?
- 50:55There's a quartet there. Yes, they're serving lobster.
- 51:00They're serving lobster and it's extremely fancy.
- 51:05The one of the fathers is staging a protest because he
- 51:08doesn't want to go to the party. He's kind of being petulant, but
- 51:12you're kind of on his side. You're like, I kind of get it.
- 51:15I don't want to go to parties either.
- 51:17I don't want to dress up fancy. Yeah, but this is also the key
- 51:20point here is Yeso's mom is throwing this party for young
- 51:24Jake. Exactly, not for young Jay.
- 51:27And the point of it is to get her hands on young Jay's
- 51:32portfolio, AKA his college application.
- 51:34The whole packet we were talking about.
- 51:35Yeah. And that's why her dad doesn't
- 51:39want to be there because he's like, I'm not sucking up to this
- 51:41lady. Yeah, I think.
- 51:42Yeah, that's pretty sure that's. That should we call him like
- 51:45Goatee? We'll call him Goatee.
- 51:48And then Pixie cut is Yeso's mom Sojin.
- 51:53And then Yeso is Snowdrop Heijun's.
- 51:58Lovely runner. Lovely runner.
- 51:59Girl, we will call her lovely runner because I think everybody
- 52:02will. And Young Jay is the guy also
- 52:05from Lovely Runner. Young Jay's the guy who gets to
- 52:07just Seoul National University. Oh yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 52:10He's like barely in the hill. Place he's barely in this show
- 52:14he kind of comes back later way later after a while, but in the
- 52:16first episode he's there cuz the party he's the one who got into
- 52:19Seoul National University Med school.
- 52:20He's a lovely runner as her like other dude that's like in her
- 52:25high school. So little reunion happened
- 52:29during lovely. Runner.
- 52:29Nice, nice. So this is this family and
- 52:33Goatee is staging a little protest.
- 52:35He shows up wearing hiking clothes, athleisure, and
- 52:39everyone else is wearing gowns and suits and you know, he's
- 52:44just being a little nasty. But I liked him.
- 52:48Like in episode 1 I liked the dad, the Goatee dad.
- 52:53Yep. Oh.
- 52:56Shit like that goes sideways, like so fast in this show.
- 53:01But anyway, the mom whose son got into SNU Med school does not
- 53:07want to give up the portfolio. They try to schmooze her, they
- 53:11try to booze her, and like, nothing's working.
- 53:14She won't. She says explicitly she's not
- 53:16going to give up her son's portfolio, but she'll help one
- 53:19of them, whoever banks with Hanam Bank get an invitation to
- 53:25this. And this was crazy.
- 53:27Like this is when I was like, whoa, got to suspend disbelief
- 53:30here because I hope to God this doesn't happen, that a bank in
- 53:34Korea under the guise of an investment meeting hosted this
- 53:40big mixer for mothers of like students to.
- 53:47It was like an auction, like for these specialized coordinators,
- 53:52college entrance coordinators. And I was like, whoa, we are off
- 53:56to a fine start here because. Now in this show, they say there
- 54:00are similar events like this in the US.
- 54:02The characters say this. Is this true?
- 54:04I do not know. I try to look for that.
- 54:05I couldn't find it, but I don't think people would put that on
- 54:07the Internet. Like that?
- 54:08Exactly like that would never. Take that with what you will,
- 54:11right? Like Full House, Laurie Mclaw.
- 54:14Laurie, what's her favorite? Laurie Law would never put that
- 54:17on the Internet if that existed. Yeah, Yeah.
- 54:21And that's how Pixie cut gets paired with our coordinator,
- 54:25which I don't know how. The bun lady.
- 54:28Bun lady. All right.
- 54:29We'll call it the coordinator. The coordinator.
- 54:30We'll call her the coordinator. All right, Yeah, this
- 54:33coordinator has a perfect record.
- 54:36She gets two students into SNU every year and she only takes 2
- 54:42clients every year. She's the one who got this kid
- 54:45from the neighbourhood in to SNU Med school.
- 54:48So here we go. Like this is it.
- 54:51This is our meet queue with the two ladies who end up going head
- 54:56to head in the rest of the show. The coordinator's going to be
- 55:01teaching and handling. Yeah, so for three years.
- 55:06So Sky Castle, the show takes place over the course of three
- 55:11years. The end of episode 1 ends with
- 55:17this mom who was being congratulated and given.
- 55:21Wait, before we get to the mom. Oh, I will say young Jay hides
- 55:24an iPad. Yes, he done.
- 55:27Jay hides an iPad and there's something secret, the secret
- 55:31iPad, hidden in this random part of his house.
- 55:34Yeah, he hides it in like a top drawer of his of his desk in his
- 55:39room, 'cause he's going on a trip and his mom was gifted a
- 55:44big cruise as well to go on with her mother as a reward for doing
- 55:49such a stand up job of getting her son into SNU.
- 55:52From his dad. From his dad.
- 55:53So the dad gave this gift to the mom, which I had like issues
- 55:59with that in and of itself because it was very this sets up
- 56:03like these rewards for the mothers and how they are only
- 56:09given like value and affection if their children are
- 56:13successful, otherwise they are, you know.
- 56:18Well, I think it's like the husbands have the pressure of
- 56:21maintaining whatever prestigious job they have, surgeons and
- 56:25whatever they are professors. The wives have this pressure of
- 56:29their turning out perfect kids, however that happens, and then
- 56:33the kids have the pressure of being perfect themselves.
- 56:36So it's not equally distributed pressure, I don't think
- 56:39necessarily or I don't know, I guess it's just very different
- 56:41for each of them. But yeah, it's true.
- 56:43It's sort of icky. It's like, OK, you get these
- 56:45cruise tickets and this party's actually for the mom, not even
- 56:47for the kid who got into school, this school.
- 56:49Yeah. It's all very weird.
- 56:51Very weird. Yeah, it's bizarre.
- 56:54And you can see all the other moms watching as she gets this
- 56:57gift at the party and. It's not just like a subtle
- 57:01gift. It's like presented to her at
- 57:03this ball with like this string quartet in the background,
- 57:05lobsters and and on platters and whatever.
- 57:09So it's like a whole thing. It's a whole thing.
- 57:11Yeah, it's very performative. Almost everything that they do
- 57:16in the show is performative. And so this was one of those
- 57:20moments, and you get that immediately from episode one
- 57:24that they're performing for each other.
- 57:27Definitely. And then, you know, all hell
- 57:29breaks loose at the end of the episode, you get the iPad hiding
- 57:32thing, and the mom shoots herself in the head.
- 57:38Yeah, and commits suicide. Trigger whining.
- 57:42Oh yeah, Trigger. Yeah, trigger.
- 57:43The only two trigger warnings in the whole show were for suicide
- 57:48and I think violence. Death or something in the upper
- 57:53left corner. Netflix was like suicide and
- 57:55violence. That's all you got.
- 57:57Like no, no sexual anything. Like really no profanity or
- 58:02anything in the show. But Oh yeah, suicide definitely.
- 58:07Because at the end of episode 1, this suicide colours like the
- 58:11next set of episodes. As this community grapples with
- 58:17her loss, the family completely falls apart.
- 58:20What the hell does the coordinator have to do with
- 58:23anything? And also like before that, we
- 58:26get to the coordinator too. It's like, why would a mom who
- 58:29just was basically given mom of the year award by these people
- 58:33because her kid got into, you know, it's Med school.
- 58:36Why would she kill herself? Like that's the other thing.
- 58:38This is a perfect community with perfect people and perfect
- 58:41children and perfect scores and perfect everything.
- 58:44And she's the epitome of the perfection.
- 58:46But she kills herself. So now that's why it's such a
- 58:49like mind blown moment because you're like, wait, what
- 58:53happened? Why did it happen exactly?
- 58:56But yes, then they are still chasing that portfolio even kind
- 58:59of after she dies and she they have that appointment with the
- 59:01coordinator. Unbelievable.
- 59:03Like the audacity on these people.
- 59:06Like it just gets worse. Like they have more and more
- 59:09moments where you're like, they're shameless.
- 59:11They have no shame whatsoever because they still, especially
- 59:17Pixie cut, only cares about yes all getting into SNU Med school.
- 59:23Yep. And it's interesting because
- 59:25it's like such as tight knit community.
- 59:27They see each other every single day.
- 59:27They have their little book club and whatever going on and like
- 59:30so it's not like they're cold and distantly like distant
- 59:34neighbors. They're like all up on each
- 59:35other. It's like business or kids or
- 59:36friends, etcetera. And they know each other's
- 59:39business. So they kind of do mourn her
- 59:40when she dies. And then they're kind of like,
- 59:42OK, well, but anyways, back to getting my kid into school, into
- 59:45Med school or whatever school, like that's they really do just
- 59:48pivot to that. They're like, OK, well anyway.
- 59:50Yeah, their priorities are so out of whack.
- 59:53From then on, I think we're I think we should just talk about
- 59:56like the families as units and what the hell happens to each
- 1:00:01one of them. Not necessarily going episode by
- 1:00:03episode because we'd just be here for four hours, but.
- 1:00:08I I think, I don't know, do you want to work backwards and talk
- 1:00:11about like maybe the smallest family, maybe Ginny's family?
- 1:00:15So side swept. Oh gosh, I love her.
- 1:00:19She's such a like trophy wife and like the best way.
- 1:00:23She is a trophy wife. And her husband's a dodo bird.
- 1:00:26Like, he is a surgeon, but he's also like, not the sharpest of
- 1:00:31the surgical tools. You're totally right.
- 1:00:34Like he's such a freaking dodo. It's so funny because this is
- 1:00:38this when this first aired the big news, because I watched it
- 1:00:41as aired, by the way, and there was a big talk of the town, this
- 1:00:44now defunct K pop girl group AOA.
- 1:00:47One of the girls in AOA was going to make a cameo
- 1:00:49appearance. And so he she does.
- 1:00:50And he's like, he's like Bengal, Bengal, like that or whatever.
- 1:00:55And he's like so excited, his character so excited for her.
- 1:00:57And it just was so perfect. It was so ridiculous, but sets
- 1:01:00the scene and the tone of that family so well because they're
- 1:01:03definitely like the least on the most unserious ones of this
- 1:01:06crew. Yeah.
- 1:01:08And they're kind of like the most demonstrative of anyone
- 1:01:11because they kind of don't care about anything as much as they
- 1:01:13do. They're not, it's not that
- 1:01:14serious for them. But they then, but they look
- 1:01:16around, they're like, oh, I need to also be serious about this.
- 1:01:18Like I should also like want this.
- 1:01:20Yeah, like they're followers. They're not leaders.
- 1:01:23They're reading the room and they're constantly adjusting
- 1:01:26themselves to kind of meet what everybody else is demanding.
- 1:01:32And if everybody else is concerned about their kids
- 1:01:34getting into an IV essentially, then they're going to pressure
- 1:01:39their kid as well to get in. And they're taking their cues
- 1:01:42from from everybody else in the sky Castle rather than making up
- 1:01:45their own minds. And I think the husband at one
- 1:01:48point says to the wife, you had you're perfect except for one
- 1:01:52thing. You're so wishy washy.
- 1:01:55And she is. She's absolutely switching sides
- 1:01:59like all the time between plant lady and Pixie cut essentially.
- 1:02:03She's such a suck up to the Pixie cut for the longest time
- 1:02:07just 'cause she thinks like that'll get her whatever she
- 1:02:09needs to get in order for everyone else to think she's
- 1:02:11like, cool. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:13Because the Pixie cut has her kid is older, like is going
- 1:02:17through the process now. And her child Suan is like in
- 1:02:23middle school. So he does She's doesn't she
- 1:02:25doesn't have as much pressure as the other mothers who have their
- 1:02:30kids on the cusp of just about to enter high school and go
- 1:02:34through this process and need to keep their grades up.
- 1:02:38So she wants to basically benefit from their experience
- 1:02:42and you know, get all this Intel from the the mom, the Pixie cut
- 1:02:47mom. And that's why she's sucking U
- 1:02:49to her because she's like, well, she'll pass along all of this
- 1:02:52stuff. She'll give me the coordinators
- 1:02:53name and she'll put in a good word for me and yadda yadda
- 1:02:57yadda so on and so forth. But it gets totally it's so
- 1:03:02annoying but also so entertaining to watch because of
- 1:03:05the personality on this Ginny character like this.
- 1:03:08Memory, memory. She's always like.
- 1:03:11That's what I'm saying. But like, she's not so elegant,
- 1:03:15like she's not so refined like the other mothers.
- 1:03:19She is very kind of crude and very open.
- 1:03:24She's very extroverted. She's boisterous and.
- 1:03:28She doesn't have, like, quiet dignity, yes.
- 1:03:31Exactly, which makes her so much fun to watch.
- 1:03:35I mean, she gets syrup poured all over her, She gets her hair
- 1:03:38pulled, She's in like 50 cuffs, 7 point.
- 1:03:41Like she's like honestly, like so much fun.
- 1:03:44She has this buffoon of a husband.
- 1:03:46She has this idiot for a son who like does not want to study,
- 1:03:50does not like to study and is actually, you know, he's not
- 1:03:54that smart, like unfortunately. So she's like trying to instill
- 1:04:00all of the same values and work ethic into her son when it's
- 1:04:06just not sticking. This all comes to a head with
- 1:04:09her family when the kid like kind of just runs away.
- 1:04:12Like he tries to run away at one point.
- 1:04:15Well, I think that was brilliant on the part of the writers
- 1:04:17because it could have made this whole family just be the goofy
- 1:04:19ass family on the block. But then they had like an actual
- 1:04:22real problem, which is the fact that the pressure was acutely
- 1:04:26felt by their kid. And he's he was like, I don't
- 1:04:29even want to be. I'd rather because she's very
- 1:04:31into porcelain and into her little porcelain.
- 1:04:32That was hysterical too, that she she had like.
- 1:04:35This one stuff, yeah. Like hobby that she had was was
- 1:04:38collecting porcelain, Yes. Yep, And she and he wrote that
- 1:04:44little school poem that's like, I'd rather be a, a my mom's
- 1:04:46coffee cup because she loves that better or teacup that she
- 1:04:49loves it better than me or whatever.
- 1:04:50It's like so dumb, like some dumb thing a kid was like so
- 1:04:53sad. It's so true.
- 1:04:54It's yeah, it's sad because it was just true feelings.
- 1:04:56He genuinely felt like kind of like, you guys don't value me.
- 1:04:59And he was the best of the kids at expressing it.
- 1:05:02She was the best of the moms, I would say at like receiving that
- 1:05:05information as after some, you know, some time, obviously.
- 1:05:08And then the dad, even the dad was just wanting like peace and
- 1:05:11harmony in his house. He was like, OK, go to school or
- 1:05:13don't go to school. He's just like, but make your
- 1:05:15don't upset your mom. You know, they're like, you
- 1:05:17know, he's like do whatever, but sort yourselves out.
- 1:05:20But they were kind of the most like in a way affectionate with
- 1:05:24each other. They seemed into each other.
- 1:05:26And then they were into their kid and nobody else was really
- 1:05:28as much like. Yeah, I I agree that this mom,
- 1:05:33she would have been my favorite if it wasn't for Bob Cut because
- 1:05:38she felt conflicted. I think those moments where they
- 1:05:43had her struggling with what to do.
- 1:05:46How do how do you reconcile these two halves of like, I want
- 1:05:50you to do well, I want to pressure you.
- 1:05:52I want to push you to succeed and excel at academics, but I
- 1:05:58don't want to. I don't want to torture you like
- 1:06:00I don't want to make you suffer through all of these years of
- 1:06:05schooling and going to the academies and going to bed past
- 1:06:09midnight and staying up late and constantly being on your ass.
- 1:06:14That is not a way to live. And she understood that.
- 1:06:18And so I respected her for she loved her son.
- 1:06:22Like she actually I believed her when she wanted her son to do
- 1:06:26well academically, but she also deeply loved her son and like
- 1:06:32was so affectionate with him and would like lay in the bed with
- 1:06:36him and like hug him and cuddle with him and stuff.
- 1:06:38And I'm like, Oh my God, like that is so cute.
- 1:06:40None of the other moms did that. And like, he's an only child, so
- 1:06:43this could be why. And she's a loudmouth, but he,
- 1:06:46there's also this thing, like he knew his mom.
- 1:06:48They know each other. They see each other, they know
- 1:06:49each other. Cuz he's like, you didn't do
- 1:06:51well in school. Why are you on my ass?
- 1:06:52So like, like they have, like they, he knows that about his
- 1:06:56mom. And you know, his dad's a
- 1:06:57surgeon and, you know, so did, you know, somewhat well, but
- 1:06:59he's like, why are you being like this when you did?
- 1:07:02And she kind of takes a heart. She's like, yeah, I wasn't that
- 1:07:04good in school. I mean, you could see her, like,
- 1:07:06grappling with that with like, yeah, her inadequacy making my
- 1:07:09kid do. Yeah.
- 1:07:10I mean, and I'm trying to force my kid to do stuff I couldn't
- 1:07:11even do or didn't do, you know? So I really liked her.
- 1:07:15I thought she was fun and I I just loved seeing her
- 1:07:18relationship with her son and how after that moment where she
- 1:07:23almost loses him, like he almost does get away and run away, she
- 1:07:27rethinks her tact. I love her hair.
- 1:07:30And her hair is fabulous. Like, honestly, her hair is
- 1:07:33honest, a character in and of itself.
- 1:07:36It's beautiful. She can do no wrong.
- 1:07:39She is the best dressed of the whole of.
- 1:07:41All the best clothes. Yeah, the like spangled jacket
- 1:07:44that she's wearing on like a cold November morning in her
- 1:07:47neighborhood for no reason. Yeah, she's fabulous.
- 1:07:50A+, no notes. I, I love that family and I, I
- 1:07:54love their dynamic. I love how they end up a plus
- 1:07:57plus. So we're moving on to Sunghez
- 1:08:02family, which is our Bobcat family.
- 1:08:05OK, that's why I and Pyramid. Dad so it's Bob Cut and Pyramid
- 1:08:10Dad. They're the parents of three
- 1:08:12children and this was a whole last mess.
- 1:08:16Like we could be an hour just on them but.
- 1:08:19They should get a spin off they. Should they should have gone off
- 1:08:22well. They kind of did because they're
- 1:08:23on, they're on What's that show they're on right now.
- 1:08:26The two husband and the wife are on a K drama right now.
- 1:08:28Yes, Normal family or something. Something like that.
- 1:08:31And I heard it wasn't that good, but Oh yeah, OK, sorry.
- 1:08:37This isn't their spin off I. Guess this Yeah, but they got
- 1:08:40reunited in a 2424 show as husband and wife again.
- 1:08:44But it's because they were here as husband and wife very
- 1:08:48successfully in Sky Castle. I think they had a really juicy
- 1:08:54storyline because, you know, you come to find out that she kind
- 1:09:00of signed up for this marriage sight unseen because she didn't
- 1:09:04ask him important questions about his values and what he
- 1:09:08wanted out of his children, what were his goals in life, yadda,
- 1:09:11yadda, yadda. Because she was so desperate to
- 1:09:13get away from her own patriarchal family, her own
- 1:09:17patriarchal father. And so she escaped right into
- 1:09:20another patriarchal, severely patriarchal man.
- 1:09:24OK, I wanna say something real quick about this Marriage 1 is
- 1:09:27that, and I don't know if they didn't say this in the show, but
- 1:09:30through the 1990s arranged marriage in Korea where your
- 1:09:34parents get together with another set of parents and like
- 1:09:36yeah, our kids are getting married and he'll be perfect.
- 1:09:38That was a thing. I don't know if that's the case
- 1:09:40with them, but the other thing I wanted to mention, so I'm saying
- 1:09:43it could be The other thing I wanna mention is that Pyramid
- 1:09:45dad chose her or was willing to marry her 'cause again, I don't
- 1:09:48know if they were arranged by their.
- 1:09:50Parents, I don't think they were because he came from a poor
- 1:09:52upbringing. True.
- 1:09:54And he was not of the same, he was not of the same status that
- 1:09:58she was. You're right, You're right.
- 1:10:00He kind of worked up to where he could marry her because he
- 1:10:06basically excelled academically and worked his way up, went to
- 1:10:10law school and, you know, did it the old fashioned like, like
- 1:10:15very, very American of him actually to do it this way.
- 1:10:19Pulled himself by his boots. Yeah, OK, well, also American
- 1:10:22way is the Aunt Becky methods, so don't forget that part
- 1:10:25either. But anyway, that is also
- 1:10:27American. But no, he he picked her because
- 1:10:30her her dad, Yeah, Congressman, congressman or senator or
- 1:10:35something. So it was like advantageous to
- 1:10:37him. And that kind of is his whole MO
- 1:10:39pyramid dad. Like everything has to be like
- 1:10:41something about him, like reflect well on him at the end
- 1:10:44of the day. Yeah, whatever it is, whatever
- 1:10:46his kids do, whatever his wife does, if it doesn't come back to
- 1:10:48like reflect him as a in a positive manner, he kind of
- 1:10:51isn't here for it. Yeah, and I thought it bit him
- 1:10:54in the ass and it was wonderful. I love to see it.
- 1:10:57So the mom, again, we kind of covered her a little bit in the
- 1:11:01non spoiler section, but she was a wonderful, astute mother
- 1:11:06because she understood, saw that her children were suffering
- 1:11:12under the thumb of their father and how he who was torturing
- 1:11:16them like he would literally have AI think it was a torture
- 1:11:20chamber. Their study room that was within
- 1:11:24the house was like this soundproof room.
- 1:11:26No doors, no windows. Jail cell vibes.
- 1:11:29Jail cell vibes. Very dark.
- 1:11:32He would make them compete against each other.
- 1:11:34He had it was it was a older daughter and twins.
- 1:11:37They're twins boys, but fraternal twins.
- 1:11:40They look nothing alike and he would make the twins compete
- 1:11:43against each other all the time and trying to foster this
- 1:11:47unhealthy level of competition between the brothers like their
- 1:11:52brothers. It kind of made no sense, but
- 1:11:56also I could understand why he was trying to.
- 1:12:00It's almost like iron sharpens iron.
- 1:12:02He was trying to get them to improve each.
- 1:12:05Other it's like a dog fight kind of guy.
- 1:12:07Exactly. Exactly.
- 1:12:10That's not good, he. Was like a fight to the death
- 1:12:12kind of guy. Was very like gladiator style of
- 1:12:16teaching and tutoring. He would have a metronome.
- 1:12:20Them, they didn't go to hog one. No they didn't go to Hog 1.
- 1:12:23He did it himself like a crazy person.
- 1:12:26Oh, the metronome. The fucking metronome bro.
- 1:12:29And he anyway, Long story short, he was in the wrong 100% of the
- 1:12:36time in the show. Like there was never a point
- 1:12:39where I was like, you know what? He's got a point.
- 1:12:42Never. Never.
- 1:12:43Like he was always. Wrong.
- 1:12:45And I will say this actor did a good job of conveying this
- 1:12:48character's insecurities, being like, probably the leading
- 1:12:51factor to why he was the way he was.
- 1:12:53Yeah, because he came, like you said, from kind of humble
- 1:12:55origins now living in this Tony neighborhood with all these
- 1:12:58fancy people. And he wasn't even the fanciest
- 1:13:00of the fancy people cuz he wasn't a surgeon.
- 1:13:01He was just just in quotes a law professor.
- 1:13:04And that was like the lower of the, of the rankings of things
- 1:13:08to be when you're living as Sky Castle resident.
- 1:13:11And he kind of made-up for it or overcompensated for it.
- 1:13:13But being like, you know what, I'll do you all a favor.
- 1:13:15I will hold these book clubs and I will enlighten your children
- 1:13:18on the humanities so you can teach them about math, science,
- 1:13:21medicine. I'll handle like, you know,
- 1:13:24critical thinking and the great literature.
- 1:13:27He was thinking he could be a bastion of liberal the arts and
- 1:13:31he he didn't even get it. Like he didn't even get the
- 1:13:34liberal art like the the book club.
- 1:13:37You want to talk about the book club?
- 1:13:38So that was painful as shit. That was in the early episodes
- 1:13:42where they were taking the kids to these book clubs and the
- 1:13:46parents also were going to this book club in Sky Castle.
- 1:13:48It was only for the Sky Castle residence.
- 1:13:51Well, it was in there. It was in there a little like
- 1:13:53rec center slash. They had a clubhouse.
- 1:13:54Yeah, yeah, they had a clubhouse.
- 1:13:56I love, I love that they had that and I was obsessed with
- 1:13:59that. Like the sets of.
- 1:14:01Yeah, he's done. It was awesome.
- 1:14:02And that was, yeah, that was one place I wanna hang out in the
- 1:14:05clubhouse. The me too, because that's a
- 1:14:06nice ass club. I had like a library in it.
- 1:14:08It was great. It was like 10 stories high
- 1:14:10anyway, it had bedrooms in it. It had bedrooms and it had like
- 1:14:14a whole last anyway. He was picking extremely
- 1:14:18difficult books to read, dense books to read, novels that
- 1:14:24nobody could understand or digest.
- 1:14:27And he was doing it on purpose to beef up their reading list.
- 1:14:32But also I think to make himself seem like good or like smart
- 1:14:38because again, he's so like weirdly, so weirdly insecure.
- 1:14:43And I think he wanted to get these books where he knew like
- 1:14:44no one. And they were mostly books that
- 1:14:46were originally written in not Korean, right?
- 1:14:48Usually in English or some other language.
- 1:14:49And then there he yes, So it gives her whole little like book
- 1:14:53report starts it in English and then it's like, never mind, I'll
- 1:14:56switch to English. She does.
- 1:14:56She starts it as fluent English and everyone's like I, I what
- 1:15:00the look on everyone's faces. But yeah, he's just this
- 1:15:06egotistical, proud, selfish, pretentious, but.
- 1:15:12Small small man like you know yes you could do.
- 1:15:16His ego is big but his self worth is small.
- 1:15:19Yes. And so he was doing too much.
- 1:15:22Like he was literally just doing too much.
- 1:15:24He needed to do nothing at all. Like he would just help by doing
- 1:15:27nothing. And the book club, I mean, you
- 1:15:31see a lot of like how each character approaches academia,
- 1:15:37like other personalities in the group.
- 1:15:40The beauty of the book club is the parents participate too.
- 1:15:42It's not exactly. Exactly.
- 1:15:44So you have Little Miss Hair, the beautiful side hair reading
- 1:15:48Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Nietzsche and it's like she's
- 1:15:53like what the fuck is this? And honestly, it's like a former
- 1:15:57English major. This is hysterical to me.
- 1:15:59Like this level of like, my God, it's just so annoying.
- 1:16:05Like to see these, to see this man pretentious.
- 1:16:08It's so pretentious. Like it's on another level.
- 1:16:11We all knew that guy. And we all know this guy like
- 1:16:14you've seen this guy like, you know, a person like this.
- 1:16:17So anyway, he is complimenting yes.
- 1:16:21Or for her take on one of the books.
- 1:16:24I can't even remember what book it was.
- 1:16:25I think it was the selfishness gene.
- 1:16:27Or it was the selfishness 1 And she was like, I learned that it
- 1:16:31was good to be selfish, good to place myself 1st and to your.
- 1:16:34Own self-interest. Yeah.
- 1:16:36And he was like, yes, yes, yes, that's exactly I think.
- 1:16:42Sorry. I'm doing like a little
- 1:16:43impression of him too, like with the arms.
- 1:16:46Yeah, it's getting me now. So it's embarrassing.
- 1:16:50Like he's embarrassing. And yes, all is also
- 1:16:54embarrassing because you can see how conceited, cringy and cringy
- 1:16:59she is. Oh my God.
- 1:17:01Like. She has that conceit, that
- 1:17:04special conceit that only a 1617 year old girl can have Honestly
- 1:17:08so amazing, yes, amazing like you're like a job You're you
- 1:17:11hate her still from like you're like oh.
- 1:17:14My God, get her a paper bag. She needs to hide her face.
- 1:17:17It's that bad. Like you're like, Oh my God, but
- 1:17:20he's eating it up. And his kids, the twins, I hate
- 1:17:25him. They hate the book club.
- 1:17:28They don't want anything to do with him.
- 1:17:29And one of his kids had like a beautiful take on one of the
- 1:17:32books about how I can't even remember what the take was
- 1:17:36honestly. But it doesn't matter.
- 1:17:38The fact that like he had a very nuanced take and it was a very
- 1:17:41personalized thing and how he felt about studying, basically
- 1:17:46being forced to study. And the dad was like your
- 1:17:49opinions wrong. Like he basically it was a
- 1:17:52dictatorship and it was not a book discussion at all.
- 1:17:57The book club eventually gets disbanded.
- 1:18:00It comes to not because of his tyranny and plant mom comes in
- 1:18:07to save the day and she's like, what is this book club?
- 1:18:10Actually? You guys are unhinged.
- 1:18:14And she puts a stop to it in the course of the show.
- 1:18:17It's a drop in the ocean. Like the book club is not even a
- 1:18:21thing really. But it shows it, it's so good in
- 1:18:23the early episodes because it shows you how everyone kind of
- 1:18:26operates. And also in us in this show full
- 1:18:28of overbearing women and mothers, he's the overbearing
- 1:18:31dad. He is just oppressive about all
- 1:18:34this. If he's just as obsessed as the
- 1:18:36ladies are, he's the one who forces the Bob lady to go to the
- 1:18:39bank and he gets somehow gets her a bank card to show up the
- 1:18:42same meeting and bid for the coordinator the same way ESO's
- 1:18:45mom bids for her. And it's because of his analness
- 1:18:49about it. He's so uptight.
- 1:18:52Yeah. And I think that the moment that
- 1:18:56you find out his daughter never went to Harvard and she.
- 1:18:59Was doing. This like huge fraud and con
- 1:19:03Harvard was suing her. She like fled the states.
- 1:19:07I was like, oh. Her American aunt just being
- 1:19:12like freaking out in Korean and then being like, Oh my God.
- 1:19:15Yeah, yeah, the the terrible English.
- 1:19:19Exclamations in the middle of her like, freak out.
- 1:19:23Makes sense, though. No, I mean, it was such a payoff
- 1:19:25like this. This family story is has such
- 1:19:27payoff cuz he's so obnoxious. And then they basically like,
- 1:19:30they pull the rug out, call him out.
- 1:19:32Yeah, yeah. They do everything so that he is
- 1:19:35super humbled. And that is the fun part about
- 1:19:38them. Yeah.
- 1:19:39But it takes a while to get there.
- 1:19:40It does. It does.
- 1:19:41Take a lot. Again, long painful ride.
- 1:19:43Yeah, I do like the moment when the daughter comes back home
- 1:19:47after he finally he, she, she texts him that she lied she
- 1:19:52never got into Harvard. It's been this whole elaborate
- 1:19:55lie. She's been just staying at
- 1:19:59Harvard dorms without. Hanging it.
- 1:20:02It's been this entire. And this stuff she tells her
- 1:20:05parents that like she's, you know, volunteering with Malia
- 1:20:08Obama, who at the time was a Harvard student and she's like
- 1:20:12going to intern at the White House or whatever the hell she's
- 1:20:14telling her dad was all perfect stuff for she knew how to feed
- 1:20:16her dad these lines that he would, you know, eat up with a
- 1:20:18spoon. And that's kind of where some of
- 1:20:20his ego did come from because that's this was the one area
- 1:20:23where they did feel confident. And they were like the second
- 1:20:26family in a way. Like if young Jay's mom and dad
- 1:20:29were the like the first most like prestigious because of
- 1:20:32their son's success and they were like the second most
- 1:20:34because she was just at Harvard, not necessarily at like a Med
- 1:20:37school, but still she. Went to an Ivy in the space,
- 1:20:39yeah. Yeah, yeah, still pretty, pretty
- 1:20:41damn good. So yeah.
- 1:20:42And then to have all that be fake and false.
- 1:20:45And it was crazy. And the way, like her, the way
- 1:20:47her mom comes to find out about it and how they, like portrayed
- 1:20:50in the show where she's having these secret like closet
- 1:20:53conversations with her sister in the in the literal closet being
- 1:20:55like, what are you saying right now?
- 1:20:56Like, what are you telling me? And her sister's like, I'm
- 1:20:59saying I now owe Harvard University $60,000.
- 1:21:01I don't. Because Harvard's suing my ass.
- 1:21:05Yeah. What is wrong with your
- 1:21:06daughter? Yeah.
- 1:21:08The conversation that the daughter has where she's
- 1:21:11basically saying you didn't love me unless I was doing well in
- 1:21:16school. You didn't see me unless I was a
- 1:21:18Harvard student. And why can't I just be your
- 1:21:22daughter? And you know, you're such,
- 1:21:24you're so small. She kind of like starts calling
- 1:21:28him on his shit and saying that she's not a failure the way that
- 1:21:33she was raised was wrong and that he the dad is a failure
- 1:21:39because none of the family respects him.
- 1:21:43Yeah, she says it's you're a failure if your family doesn't
- 1:21:45respect you or something like that.
- 1:21:46I don't know where she got that from, if that was a quote.
- 1:21:48Do you remember where that came from or that just something she
- 1:21:50said. No, I.
- 1:21:50Think that's just something she said.
- 1:21:52OK, so she's like, you're the failure, not me.
- 1:21:55Yeah, because no one here respects you.
- 1:21:57Yeah. And then he starts turning to
- 1:21:59the twins, turns to his wife. He's like, do you respect me?
- 1:22:01And they're like, no, it's fantastic, but it's absolutely
- 1:22:08true. And it's heartbreaking in the
- 1:22:09moment when she's like, he slapped her and she's on the
- 1:22:13floor, you know? He's pretty violent.
- 1:22:16He's violent like he disappoints of twins all the time.
- 1:22:20The twins are trying to like save their Nuna and all this
- 1:22:22stuff and their mom all the time.
- 1:22:24We don't really see him do much with the wife like as far as
- 1:22:27physical violence is concerned. But it's the underpinnings of
- 1:22:30all that is there like underlying.
- 1:22:32Yeah, he's certainly abusive, and at one point she's at the
- 1:22:36end of the show, she threatens divorce, which I think she
- 1:22:39should have done 20 years ago, but it's okay.
- 1:22:41I will say, I, I, I pretty sure that still to this day, like
- 1:22:45it's obviously not uncommon, I don't think anymore.
- 1:22:47But in Korea there was this, this, and we had this too in the
- 1:22:49US, like when again, as an elder millennial child in the 80s and
- 1:22:53my my parents would ask me like, is your new friend from school?
- 1:22:57Are their parents divorced? I don't know why that was the
- 1:22:59question, but they would check they were like, are they
- 1:23:01divorced? Because that's a little shady.
- 1:23:03Yeah, I don't know. It was just some weird thing of
- 1:23:04like, it's not considered good, quote UN quote.
- 1:23:06I don't know why in in a societal level to be divorced.
- 1:23:09And in Korea, I think it may still be the case to some
- 1:23:11extent, maybe more so than here. And I'm just venturing guests
- 1:23:15here, so don't take my word for it.
- 1:23:16But they're definitely. And a family like that, it would
- 1:23:18probably be also like considered a flaw.
- 1:23:21And we were trying to maintain this level of perfection or this
- 1:23:23appearance of perfection that you get a divorce because that's
- 1:23:26a failure of a marriage and any failure is an L, basically.
- 1:23:29So so. Certainly for this very small
- 1:23:33pyramid man who was obsessed with being at the top of the
- 1:23:35pyramid. Yes.
- 1:23:37She threatens divorce though, at the end of the show.
- 1:23:40She gives him like an ultimatum of like, if, if you don't want
- 1:23:42me to divorce, you're going to have to like basically change
- 1:23:45how you behave and interact with the kids and you're going to
- 1:23:47start respecting them. You're gonna let them do a
- 1:23:49little bit of what they wanna do.
- 1:23:50What killed me though, was how Sarah, their daughter, went from
- 1:23:53a fake Harvard student to party promoter and the mom, like going
- 1:23:58to bat for the party promoter and like, it is like, it's a
- 1:24:00valid job. But it was just funny how 'cause
- 1:24:03that you would think like she's like, I'll go to nursing school
- 1:24:05or something. Kind of placate her, you know,
- 1:24:06that whole like need for their parents to like maintain these
- 1:24:09appearances or prestige or whatever perceived prestige.
- 1:24:12But she's like, no, I'm gonna be a nightclub promoter.
- 1:24:14Yeah, she was like, I'm not going to college at all.
- 1:24:16Who needs college? Yeah, that was so funny to me.
- 1:24:20And I, I just found it so hilarious.
- 1:24:21And then he's like party promoter and he's like just
- 1:24:24sputtering with like, rage. He's like, what are you talking
- 1:24:27about? Like, no daughter of mine.
- 1:24:28Yeah, it's so funny. Yeah, in my translation it said
- 1:24:32like marketing director and I was like, OK, all right.
- 1:24:39So I think that's enough of that family.
- 1:24:41I really enjoyed seeing their story and how the mom took
- 1:24:46matters into her own hands and he like fell from the apple
- 1:24:51tree. Like it was a whole reckoning
- 1:24:54for him truly. I mean he wanted her labor.
- 1:24:59Like he could not exist without her.
- 1:25:02Like he couldn't feed himself, he couldn't take care of
- 1:25:05himself. He was a mess without her.
- 1:25:08She made his life. Work.
- 1:25:11All the husbands really were like, get me my suit, get me my
- 1:25:14golf clubs, get me my whatever. And the wives go scurrying to
- 1:25:17get them even though they're like, they have like a, for lack
- 1:25:21of a better word, servant, domestic.
- 1:25:23It's a servant. I thought it was a servant as
- 1:25:25well. I'm like, oh, it's a maid that
- 1:25:28has weekends. Off.
- 1:25:29She's a servant. It's a servant, but Despite
- 1:25:32that, it's still the on the wife right to do this then the other
- 1:25:36so we're. Going to move on to.
- 1:25:39I don't know, do you want to move on?
- 1:25:41To I think we should save, yes. So it's family for last.
- 1:25:44OK, all right, so let's do swim. Which is the mother, the plant
- 1:25:49lady, and she's married to Doctor Huang.
- 1:25:52Yes, she's also children's book author.
- 1:25:54Yes, the children's book author Mom slash Plant lady and their
- 1:25:59son is Uju. Yeah.
- 1:26:02Damn. Whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 1:26:05So this, this poor lady, I mean, this whole family, they just,
- 1:26:10they put them through the wringer.
- 1:26:13They try to destroy this family. I think the the fun part about
- 1:26:18them coming into the neighborhood, like basically
- 1:26:22rising from the ashes of Yongjie's family, the mom.
- 1:26:26Who can move into that house? They move into that house.
- 1:26:29They move into the that original house where like the young Jay
- 1:26:33the SNU kid, he like goes missing and.
- 1:26:38His dad quits. His job, quits the job in the
- 1:26:40hospital, the moms committed suicide.
- 1:26:42The whole family was toe up from the flow up.
- 1:26:44And so they move into that house.
- 1:26:47They're like free thinkers. They are, you know, very hands
- 1:26:52off when it comes to Uju's education.
- 1:26:55He just studies on his own. He doesn't have any private
- 1:26:58tutors. He doesn't go to the Hagwan.
- 1:27:01She's a stay at home mom but she also the husband helps out at
- 1:27:06home. He's seen folding towels and
- 1:27:09clothes. And he's a surgeon or whatever
- 1:27:11too. Or not a.
- 1:27:12Surgeon. And he, yeah, he's a surgeon as
- 1:27:13well, A different kind. Right.
- 1:27:15Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's a neurosurgeon.
- 1:27:18Even though he's a highly educated professional, he's
- 1:27:22doing domestic duties along with her.
- 1:27:25At home, he's washing dishes. He's helping set up the table.
- 1:27:29It's a wonderful sort of utopia like existence that none of the
- 1:27:34other families see, of almost closer division of household
- 1:27:39labor between the husband and wife.
- 1:27:41They have a wonderful angelic child who is smart and is eager
- 1:27:48to learn, eager to study. Doesn't require coaxing or
- 1:27:53beating him over the head with a textbook to try and get him to
- 1:27:55study and he does extremely well in school.
- 1:27:58He was like #1 to enter high school ranked the same as Yeso.
- 1:28:05Upon entering this Sheena High School, this poor lady has the
- 1:28:11heart of a journalist because she starts digging deep into the
- 1:28:16mess of the family that was living in the house before them.
- 1:28:20She catches Yebin, yes, his younger sister and her petty
- 1:28:24thievery at the 711 or whatever her type of convenience store
- 1:28:27and tries to intervene, tries to help her, tries to be a parental
- 1:28:33guidance figure, someone adult she going to trust.
- 1:28:36At least she is. Also, I need to shut it out
- 1:28:39because right now I have adoption, Korean adoption
- 1:28:41season, my podcast, but she's an adoptive mother to who I keep
- 1:28:45calling. His name's Ujib.
- 1:28:45I keep calling him Chani because he's Chani from SF9.
- 1:28:48Yes, he is. So he's Chani's adoptive mother
- 1:28:52because Chani's biological mother passed away, got ill and
- 1:28:55passed away. And that's his trauma that he
- 1:28:57has and part probably partially why they're so easy on him in a
- 1:29:01way. But yeah, so it's a stepmother,
- 1:29:05which is rare to have, like, again, such a wonderful
- 1:29:08relationship. Like, he really treats her as a
- 1:29:11mother. She really treats him as her own
- 1:29:13son. They truly love each other.
- 1:29:17No one could guess that she was the stepmom until it was, you
- 1:29:22know, brought up as gossip in the Sky Castle community.
- 1:29:28This is highly unusual. Like, to see this family be so
- 1:29:33successful was an outlier because, you know, she didn't
- 1:29:39come from money. The doctor husband also didn't
- 1:29:42come from money. He's an orphan.
- 1:29:45She's the daughter of an orphanage.
- 1:29:47She's the daughter of like an orphanage director, and she says
- 1:29:50that growing up she didn't even realize that she had parents
- 1:29:54because of the way she was treated in the OR.
- 1:29:56I wish I was like, what the fuck are you talking about?
- 1:29:59Like you didn't know she had parents, so she was just kind.
- 1:30:02Of one of the orphanage kids, she thought she was one.
- 1:30:04Of the orphanage kids, she thought she was an orphan
- 1:30:06growing up because her parents, I guess like, did not treat her
- 1:30:09as a child of theirs. At all.
- 1:30:12So not specially not any more special.
- 1:30:14Than not any more special than any of the other orphanage kids.
- 1:30:16I guess all of these things taken together they are like a
- 1:30:21gorilla in the desert. They are like a totally out of
- 1:30:24place. I thought that them being
- 1:30:28disruptors in this little community was brilliant.
- 1:30:32By being normal, they're just normal.
- 1:30:34Yeah. And then being just normal and
- 1:30:37wonderfully mundane in this community was great.
- 1:30:41You always, I always like those stories of like the poor girl
- 1:30:45and the rich guy. This is like the poor family
- 1:30:49suddenly elevated to this different status in this
- 1:30:53different community and all of a sudden they are.
- 1:30:57Their values do not align with everybody else's values.
- 1:31:01Well, it's interesting and we're going to talk about this family
- 1:31:04later, but the way she is from the pretty much similar
- 1:31:07background to Yesso's mom's family, but they're being from
- 1:31:11and same with even like the pyramid dad, they're from these
- 1:31:13like more humble beginnings compared to everybody else in
- 1:31:16Sky Castle. But the dad, yes, sorry, this
- 1:31:20pyramid dad, Yesso's mom approach it with like this
- 1:31:22ferociousness like we need to be, we have to be.
- 1:31:25It's an imperative that everybody gets pulled as high as
- 1:31:29they can on up the pyramid ladder to the very top.
- 1:31:32Yeah. So if that means like cheating
- 1:31:34or whatever, like almost to that point of almost, they actually
- 1:31:37don't condone cheating, but they're almost to that point of
- 1:31:39like, OK, get me the best coordinator.
- 1:31:41If I have to open a bank account, if I have to spend my
- 1:31:43mother in You think you're so righteous
- 1:32:01with your humility and your like common man story, but like
- 1:32:04actually you also live here with the elite so don't pat yourself
- 1:32:08in the back too hard. Exactly.
- 1:32:10So you're you're in this like zoo with the rest of us.
- 1:32:13So I don't understand why you're like thinking that you're out in
- 1:32:15the wild and you're above us. In some ways.
- 1:32:19I understood their animosity toward her because at first when
- 1:32:24they meet her and they're wondering how her son does so
- 1:32:27well in school, and she's like, yeah, he just says, well, like,
- 1:32:30he just studies. It's nothing.
- 1:32:32It's not a big deal. And they realize that she looks
- 1:32:35down on people who send their kids to the Hagwan, who are
- 1:32:40super concerned with the grades and who have this, their
- 1:32:45mentality, the sky castle mentality, right?
- 1:32:48They immediately shun her. And I was like, you know what?
- 1:32:52If I was there, I would shun her too because that was bullshit.
- 1:32:56Like how can she look down on them?
- 1:32:59Like because if I I feel like if I had the means I would do the
- 1:33:04same thing. Not to their level, obviously.
- 1:33:07I yeah. And I think it's also like.
- 1:33:09Within my like US western centric way, I would get tutors
- 1:33:14for my kids if they were struggling in math.
- 1:33:16I would like you know, do you hire people if they needed it
- 1:33:20and not just struggle, just hit your head against the wall
- 1:33:23because you know, you're bad at me, you suck at math, OK,
- 1:33:26whatever. Like you know what I'm saying?
- 1:33:28Well, because she's privileged in a different way.
- 1:33:30She is still the wife of a surgeon, which is what the rest
- 1:33:33of them are too. So it's not like she is just
- 1:33:35like a little Bo Peep over here or somebody.
- 1:33:37And then also she, her son is just naturally gifted, naturally
- 1:33:42actively kind. He doesn't.
- 1:33:44He's number one and #2 neck and neck with henna and yes.
- 1:33:47So without having to resort to like Hagwan or coordinators or
- 1:33:53whatever, he's extremely charming and affable.
- 1:33:55He's like about to be, He could be student council president.
- 1:33:57He'd be a shoo in the twins, tell him, and he's like, I don't
- 1:33:59even care. And then he's like, actually,
- 1:34:00no, I do, because he's like, crush is gonna run.
- 1:34:02So he's like very like, he's just one of those people.
- 1:34:06Yeah, you have a perfect son and.
- 1:34:08This guys gonna walking down. At us because we don't have a
- 1:34:11perfect son. Like a perfect.
- 1:34:14It was annoying. She was immediately annoying in
- 1:34:16that respect, Yeah. And I wondered if you felt the
- 1:34:19same or if you felt some type of.
- 1:34:20Way I thought a couple things that I think redeemed her in a
- 1:34:23way for me because she was annoying a lot of these things
- 1:34:25were annoying about her and the fact that she's kind of
- 1:34:27self-righteous and kind of pretentious in a different way
- 1:34:29and she thought she's such a great mom, which she was but
- 1:34:32they thought they were great moms by being like this.
- 1:34:34It was just different perspectives in a way.
- 1:34:36Like even if like they're like, yeah, my kids going to suffer
- 1:34:39because I'm going to be a little tyrant for like however long,
- 1:34:41but then they're going to go to wherever and.
- 1:34:43That's it'll all be worse in their mind, it was all.
- 1:34:45Worth it in their mind, which I don't agree with it because then
- 1:34:48you have to suffer through four or however many years of Med
- 1:34:49school and then you know, then you're a surgeon for rest your
- 1:34:51life and that's not an easy life.
- 1:34:52So but whatever that was their outlook and hers was like this
- 1:34:55other one. But the things that redeemed, it
- 1:34:58was like they kind of show us Chani's family, the plant family
- 1:35:02after they've overcome and healed a lot of their familial
- 1:35:05wounds where like Chani says, there's time when I didn't like
- 1:35:07my mom and I was missing my real mom.
- 1:35:09And like there was Chandy used to act out as a younger person
- 1:35:13and then they now he like calls her mom and they like, she's
- 1:35:16like, Oh my God, my son. And like they have this super
- 1:35:18different dynamic. So we meet them here at this
- 1:35:20place where they're at now. So they've overcome their own
- 1:35:22obstacles and hurdles. So I was like, OK, I don't like
- 1:35:25kind of, I'm not so annoyed with her now because she definitely
- 1:35:27did struggle and didn't just have this like magically gifted
- 1:35:30perfect son, Although she herself is like, I do feel like
- 1:35:32this was just a gift from God I got for like no reason.
- 1:35:34This is perfect son. But they they do have these like
- 1:35:37issues. And then the dad is also like, I
- 1:35:41don't know, he's principled and things like that, but he's not
- 1:35:44about throwing a punch. You know, they're they're
- 1:35:45everything here is like, so like I'm dignified and I'm this and
- 1:35:48I'm not going to torture my kids and blah, blah.
- 1:35:50But then like he can be petty too, a little bit.
- 1:35:52And they have like the kind of their own little like hang ups
- 1:35:55that's different. So, and she's nosy as hell.
- 1:35:58Like why is she all up in their business?
- 1:35:59She. Is all up in their business like
- 1:36:02for many, many of their little things.
- 1:36:05I was like, OK, she should just like get away from yebin get in
- 1:36:08the car and drive away. I don't understand like that's
- 1:36:11not her child. Yeah, get away from.
- 1:36:14Young Jay's dad. Get away from young Jay, stop
- 1:36:17stalking the coordinator, get away from yebin.
- 1:36:19Like it's all like it gets to like the point such as you're
- 1:36:22like, that's weird, like. She's doing too much.
- 1:36:24And and she was self-serving in her in her own way because she
- 1:36:30wanted to write a book about all the happenings in Sky Castle.
- 1:36:35And she was doing this maybe to make money, to make a name for
- 1:36:42herself as an author. She hadn't written a book in
- 1:36:44like over a decade. And so all of these things taken
- 1:36:47together, I'm like, she's not this perfect Angel who's like
- 1:36:50doing this out of the goodness of her heart either.
- 1:36:53There's a lot of things that play here that, you know, she's
- 1:36:56doing this out of pride, out of stubbornness.
- 1:36:59She has her own complexes and trauma.
- 1:37:03Even from this fact that she married an orphan, like there's
- 1:37:05nothing wrong with that, but it was interesting she married a
- 1:37:07kid, I mean a man at that point because.
- 1:37:10She didn't marry Kitch. She did not marry another.
- 1:37:12Kid, but that guy was in her or her parents orphanage or her
- 1:37:16whoever ran it orphanage that and then she was like also like
- 1:37:19trying to convey herself as like I'm this former educator
- 1:37:23children's book author who writes about these metaphorical
- 1:37:26stories about childhood trauma or some kind of trauma because
- 1:37:28her books were kind of harrowing and then she was like my my
- 1:37:32husband is a is someone who was orphaned and and also a widower
- 1:37:35and my son I'm not. OK, Mother Teresa, like, you
- 1:37:38know, Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, and then she's like, I'm
- 1:37:43gonna be in touch. I'm gonna like hold you Evan's
- 1:37:45hand and find out what's really wrong with her 'cause no one's
- 1:37:47bothering to check with her. And she had a point, but she
- 1:37:49didn't have to be the one to make that point.
- 1:37:50You know, it's just very self-serving.
- 1:37:52Like she's like, I will be the one.
- 1:37:53And then when she went to write the book, people were like,
- 1:37:55seeing this book is like potentially tawdry, which I and
- 1:37:58tacky, but she's like, no, it's gonna be a search for justice.
- 1:38:01I was like, OK. I could understand, I could
- 1:38:03understand both viewpoints absolutely that she wanted to.
- 1:38:08It changed society and everyone was like, first of all, this is
- 1:38:11the hot Goss and #2 this is not going to change nothing.
- 1:38:15And I was like, yes, and yes, so like what everyone is saying,
- 1:38:20but also this is a witch hunt. So I understand why she feels
- 1:38:22threatened and cornered and why she would be.
- 1:38:26She feels she's stubborn and so she's going to do it anyway.
- 1:38:29So her writing the book, I, I mean, it was, she was very
- 1:38:33complex. Every character was complex, but
- 1:38:35she was very particularly complex because you could easily
- 1:38:39write her off as just being a good character.
- 1:38:42But I think she has a hero. Complex.
- 1:38:44The writing here is easy and because of that student who
- 1:38:47committed suicide, unfortunately or not because suicide, whatever
- 1:38:49got hit like whatever both happened, I guess she's trying
- 1:38:51to quit suicide and got hit by a truck and.
- 1:38:54She had her own trauma. On the scene, Yeah.
- 1:38:57And so she's trying to constantly save kids.
- 1:38:58It's like her whole thing. And yeah, so there's a lot
- 1:39:02definitely going on with her, Like, a lot, a lot.
- 1:39:04But it's interesting that she has besties with the Bob Gurley.
- 1:39:06Like they were tight. Yeah, they were tight.
- 1:39:08Yeah, for sure. So, Oh, did we want to talk
- 1:39:12about Tani, like, at all or or would you?
- 1:39:16Because he goes through, like, an epiphany at the end of the
- 1:39:18show after he gets in prison, which is, like, I realize, like,
- 1:39:22school is not anything. Yeah.
- 1:39:25He's like just done. Yeah, Oh my God, he did.
- 1:39:29He does time and it's not funny, but it's like he's just sent it
- 1:39:34to juvenile detention and like has a like hard think.
- 1:39:39We're kind of glancing over like the mock Jong of it because
- 1:39:41we're saving it for the last family.
- 1:39:44But yeah, like he does time a little bit for a few months.
- 1:39:49Yeah, he does a little bit of time actually, Channing and his
- 1:39:51other roles too. So he's like always, like
- 1:39:53wrongly accused, stuck in jail. Kuwait.
- 1:39:55Recent kid yeah, yeah. So anyway, but he.
- 1:40:00It was interesting he in jail was even more of an Angel than
- 1:40:02him at not in jail because he was like telling the other Ajima
- 1:40:06is like, oh, you didn't have to worry about me or like, hey,
- 1:40:08yeah. So like, chin up.
- 1:40:09And I was like, what is going on?
- 1:40:11Like here You're so almost ruined.
- 1:40:13You kind. Very kind to everyone who was
- 1:40:16ready to put him in jail for the rest of his life.
- 1:40:18Yeah. And make him take the blame for
- 1:40:21this murder. Anyway, that's that family.
- 1:40:25Anybody else that you want to talk about?
- 1:40:27Before we get to. Oh, hey, hey, and that should.
- 1:40:29We should we do that after or no?
- 1:40:31Well, we can do her with her family.
- 1:40:34OK. Oh gosh, oh gosh, it's all
- 1:40:36right. So this is the final family and
- 1:40:39I guess we'll just sit on this family for a a few minutes here.
- 1:40:44So Sojin is the mom Pixie Cup mom.
- 1:40:48This is the the main inciting family of the whole Sky Castle
- 1:40:53show. Yeah, she loses her marbles,
- 1:40:56basically. I mean, what do you have to say
- 1:41:00for this? Lady, so I wish sure, I wish
- 1:41:04there was way more to her back story.
- 1:41:06Maybe there was originally and they just they were like these
- 1:41:09episodes are getting longer and we don't have time and there's
- 1:41:10so many people. But she is the daughter
- 1:41:13originally of a blood and tripe seller butcher guy.
- 1:41:18And that's I guess extremely low class in crazy idea.
- 1:41:21I know much about it dirty job and she gets to know as a child
- 1:41:27E soem, which is plant lady because they are childhood
- 1:41:29schoolmates and something went down in their childhood where
- 1:41:32their friendship gets ruined because a rumor gets spread on
- 1:41:34school. Or maybe the rumor is the fact
- 1:41:35that she is the daughter of, I don't know what happened,
- 1:41:37daughter of a butcher, but something happens and she ends
- 1:41:39up hating her but the plant lady denies to this her adulthood
- 1:41:43years of like I know I wasn't the one who spread the rumor
- 1:41:45about you 'cause I was. Yeah, she didn't tell the truth
- 1:41:47about where her she lived and what her father did as right.
- 1:41:52And that and then somehow she ends up like even though he has
- 1:41:55this other girlfriend for a while and his station in life is
- 1:41:59way above hers. I don't know if it's like a
- 1:42:00surprise pregnancy and the surprise pregnancy was yes, so
- 1:42:02but somehow the Pixie Hut lady ends up marrying the surgeon guy
- 1:42:06and the her mother-in-law hates her guts.
- 1:42:08Oh yes, regards. And so she's like in repentance
- 1:42:11or something. You need to you need to make
- 1:42:13sure this daughter, yes, becomes third generation of doctors in
- 1:42:19our family that goes to stole National University medical
- 1:42:21school specifically. So you need to make that happen
- 1:42:23and then I might forgive you. Maybe.
- 1:42:25So that's like the big grudge against her that the
- 1:42:26mother-in-law has. And I just wish we had way more
- 1:42:29information on like the friendship, her childhood.
- 1:42:32Why was her dad was alcohol. We found her dad was an
- 1:42:34alcoholic and that abusive and she had lied.
- 1:42:38I didn't said Oh my my parents live in Australia and blah blah
- 1:42:40blah whatever. And like all these lies and she
- 1:42:43has a fake name. Like that's not even her real
- 1:42:44name. The name she has is one that's
- 1:42:46like I guess maybe easily recognizable as like lower
- 1:42:49status, lower class or poor or rural or I didn't know what it
- 1:42:51was. They were all laughing at her a
- 1:42:53real name once they find out what it is.
- 1:42:55And so it must be something recognizable in Korean of like
- 1:42:57oh, this is like people from maybe this kind of rural area.
- 1:43:00I don't know. I was just guessing, but yeah,
- 1:43:02like, I was like, would she be named like, you know, if you saw
- 1:43:05someone named like Billy Sue or something, like, I don't know,
- 1:43:08in the US you'd be like, oh, that's the one from the sticks,
- 1:43:10OK. You know, so or like, whatever.
- 1:43:13But. But yeah, so she has this giant
- 1:43:16chip on her shoulder of like, she has been down this path of
- 1:43:19like, or maybe not a path, but she was born into circumstances
- 1:43:21that was like kind of the lowest of the low.
- 1:43:23And she will never, ever get down to that level again.
- 1:43:26So she's going to do anything almost to get yes, so and her
- 1:43:30kids and and to stay in this station of life where she's
- 1:43:33achieved through marriage and whatever else.
- 1:43:34And I don't know how she got there.
- 1:43:36Did did did they say even though I've watched this like 4 times
- 1:43:38they did they really say? No, no, they never say how she
- 1:43:42meets her husband, how she bagged the husband, or how she
- 1:43:47got rid of the first love of her husband.
- 1:43:50I really think she just was the first one to be like, surprised
- 1:43:54I'm having your kid. Yeah, I think she just beat her
- 1:43:56to the punch. Yeah, I think she was just like,
- 1:43:58yeah, I'm pregnant and then. And maybe she saw it as like a
- 1:44:06yeah, take it in. Whereas like the other his other
- 1:44:09girlfriend either didn't tell him in time or like kept it from
- 1:44:13him intentionally or something to save him.
- 1:44:16Whereas This is why I was thinking like the other
- 1:44:18girlfriend that he had right before her didn't tell him on
- 1:44:21purpose. Maybe because she was like, he's
- 1:44:23the third or whatever generation, second generation
- 1:44:26doctor. I'm gonna interfere in his life.
- 1:44:28Let me just keep me in our. I mean, it was a matter of
- 1:44:30child, right? Like right, 2-3 months between
- 1:44:35their pregnancies when the ladies got pregnant with his
- 1:44:39children because. And maybe Yeso and Hannah are in
- 1:44:44the same. Year right, right and so then,
- 1:44:47but whereas yeso's mom, I think I'm just guessing cuz we don't
- 1:44:50get this in back story. It was saw this as like her way
- 1:44:52in. I'm gonna worm my way into the
- 1:44:54status and maybe hen asthma was like let me not bother him in
- 1:44:57his status and like disrupt his whole life and blah blah.
- 1:44:59Blah right? I I just want to pause here and
- 1:45:01say like if this drama was made 20 years ago, the drama would
- 1:45:06not be about Sojin. Like the Pixie cut mom, the
- 1:45:09protagonist or the mom would be the dying angelic mom who like
- 1:45:16left to save the goatee dad from the embarrassment of having a
- 1:45:23child out of wedlock and not being accepted into this rich
- 1:45:27family. And like that would be the K
- 1:45:30drama. That would be the story.
- 1:45:32I agree. I agree.
- 1:45:33I think it's funny that they centered it on this lady who's
- 1:45:37like a villain. But she is out of necessity.
- 1:45:41Like that's kind of why I loved her.
- 1:45:42I mean, I definitely loved her too.
- 1:45:43She didn't pick her as my top babe mom, but she she's kind of
- 1:45:46incredible because she really overcomes all this stuff and
- 1:45:49she's very conniving and she's very like, you know,
- 1:45:52manipulative or whatever. She'll do whatever because she
- 1:45:54has to. It's like survival skills go
- 1:45:56into effect and she does not care like she will.
- 1:45:59She'll humiliate herself in front of her mother-in-law as
- 1:46:00many times as needed because but at least she has to keep her
- 1:46:02station in life. She has to secure her children's
- 1:46:05station in life. She secures the legitimacy of
- 1:46:08her children and herself, her new fake identity, etcetera.
- 1:46:13And she, you know, just does all the self protecting things.
- 1:46:16But it's like there was a there was a reason for all that.
- 1:46:19It wasn't just superficial, like the way pyramid dads felt very
- 1:46:22like self-serving a dumb way Dad.
- 1:46:25Yeah, yeah. So I loved her and her conniving
- 1:46:29ways. Yeah, she's she's cool to watch.
- 1:46:32I mean, she's compelling to watch because she makes terrible
- 1:46:38decisions. You question whether she loves
- 1:46:41her children. You get that she loves her
- 1:46:44children, but you're like, does she really?
- 1:46:47She definitely has a favorite that was.
- 1:46:49The OH clearly has a favorite child, like Yeso is for sure her
- 1:46:53favorite child. The fact that she didn't have a
- 1:46:56son was a blow to her legitimacy as a daughter-in-law in that
- 1:47:03family because sons are so obviously favored.
- 1:47:06The mother-in-law clearly wanted a grandson, not a granddaughter.
- 1:47:14She's automatically trying to make up lost ground for not
- 1:47:19providing an heir. She is trying to foster her
- 1:47:23daughter into this third generation doctor that the the
- 1:47:27mother-in-law wanted. So she's she's like, OK, if you
- 1:47:30can't have the son who's a doctor, I'll give you the
- 1:47:33granddaughter who's a dog. Like instead of a grandson, a
- 1:47:37granddaughter who's a doctor, the third generation doctor that
- 1:47:41you so desperately want. This objective does not leave
- 1:47:46her body for 20 episodes. I mean.
- 1:47:51She's so intense. She's so intense.
- 1:47:53Honestly, all of these Sky Castle families are looking for
- 1:47:57lawyers, Wall Street, elite Ivy League schools.
- 1:48:00That's that's the level to which they aspire.
- 1:48:04A successful child will elevate the mother's status and she's
- 1:48:10looking for that acceptance from the mother-in-law.
- 1:48:14But not only the mother-in-law, because she's lying to her kids
- 1:48:16and she's going to keep up that life for life.
- 1:48:18She does not care and she doesn't have any qualms about
- 1:48:20it. And she's not even like she's
- 1:48:21nothing. It's just like she's very like
- 1:48:23this is an imperative, which is. Why?
- 1:48:25I thought she might be like, a psychopath because she so coolly
- 1:48:30lies to her children about her own identity for so long their
- 1:48:37entire lives. She's lying.
- 1:48:38She has fake parents that she sends them to see in Sydney,
- 1:48:43Australia. Someone like, yeah, like she
- 1:48:46hires people. And what kind of a person
- 1:48:51devotes themselves to the lie? I think a person like her, she
- 1:48:55has lived such a difficult life at the lowest status you can be
- 1:49:00in Korean society. I'm assuming short of maybe
- 1:49:02being unhoused or something, I don't know, but I think.
- 1:49:05It's also in her head. No.
- 1:49:08Yeah, is what I'm trying to get at.
- 1:49:09Is that like she's not well, she's built, she has this drive.
- 1:49:14Yeah, she's built the. Drive and ambition and the like,
- 1:49:19whatever that is, it is true. It's true because again, even
- 1:49:22though the orphanage dad, the guy who was in orphanage and
- 1:49:26married the plant lady, the pyramid dad, they also had
- 1:49:29difficult, so easy lives in their younger years.
- 1:49:32They they're not like that. Like they're all kind of, I
- 1:49:34mean, not the plant dad, but they're all kind of crazy, but
- 1:49:37not to her level. Like she's got another different
- 1:49:39fire and the way she gets pissed off, the way she grabs the
- 1:49:43beautiful hair lady with by the hair and it was like, I will
- 1:49:46kill you. I don't even care.
- 1:49:47No. No, no, she's threatening to
- 1:49:48kill people left and right like she's playing a game.
- 1:49:51She plays a game of chicken with the plant lady where she runs
- 1:49:55her off the road and threatens to kill her.
- 1:49:57Like she is aggressive, crazy, like she's crazy.
- 1:50:03So I think that's why it's so like the writers making Henna
- 1:50:06like her match her counterpart. They see each other in each
- 1:50:09other. It's themselves in each other.
- 1:50:11I should say so, cuz like they can match each other's crazy cuz
- 1:50:14Henna too. She is.
- 1:50:15She has no other fucks left to give.
- 1:50:18Her mom is dead. Yeah.
- 1:50:19She's like, she's got nothing. She's got to survive for real.
- 1:50:22Like she's got to do something. Like I have nothing left to
- 1:50:25lose. Yeah, she's nothing to lose.
- 1:50:27She has No Fear. She has no nothing.
- 1:50:28And when she leaves her tries to leave her in the forest, she
- 1:50:30turns around and gets her gets her because I think she realizes
- 1:50:33like Hannah doesn't even like on some level, Hannah doesn't care.
- 1:50:35You can leave her in the forest. Hannah doesn't even care or cry
- 1:50:37or anything. She's like and what?
- 1:50:39So she turns around and gets her because she's like, why?
- 1:50:40May as well just go get her because it's they both are kind
- 1:50:43of a match for each other in a way, because they're both lived
- 1:50:46the most desperate circumstances.
- 1:50:48I think either of them can imagine like being in and then
- 1:50:51they're like here in this like sky Castle and as like this
- 1:50:54charity case got to go to Sky Castle because she's like,
- 1:50:57they're whatever. I don't know, like diversity
- 1:50:59person. She's not wealthy and all that
- 1:51:02kind of and stuff. But then she like points out all
- 1:51:04these like, you know, injustices or unfairness and special
- 1:51:08treatments and different things like that.
- 1:51:11Somehow works her way into and of course the coordinator gets
- 1:51:14her there into the house, finds out who her dad is like that,
- 1:51:18that things just go crazy. Like after a certain point, it's
- 1:51:21just like your brain is exploding with information
- 1:51:24that's coming out about this family left and right.
- 1:51:27I just I haven't my notes. I have one note.
- 1:51:30This is from like episodes 3 through 5 early because after
- 1:51:34episode 5 I stopped taking notes.
- 1:51:36I would have a thesis if I tried to take notes on this show.
- 1:51:40Definitely. Yeah, but I have here in all
- 1:51:42caps. Pixie Cut is a raving
- 1:51:44psychopath. She's manipulative towards the
- 1:51:47teacher. By teacher I mean the
- 1:51:49coordinator doing everything she can to get her back, bribing her
- 1:51:53with gold bars and fancy packed homemade food, handwritten
- 1:51:56apology notes. Until finally she prostrates
- 1:51:59herself on her knees, crying for forgiveness.
- 1:52:01It looks sincere, her promise that she would be OK if her
- 1:52:05family turned into a disaster just like the other one,
- 1:52:08Yongja's family. That she'll be OK with teachers
- 1:52:11methods. But in the hallway she smirks.
- 1:52:14Riley like a fox, like a crazy person, like a psychopath.
- 1:52:20Because the amount of times that these women were twirling
- 1:52:25mustaches with each other, especially the coordinator and
- 1:52:30the Pixie cut. Yeah, another good match for
- 1:52:33each other. They were well matched as well.
- 1:52:36Those three like Hannah this, which is a student, She's she's
- 1:52:40a teenager, She's 17 years old, 17 or 18 years old.
- 1:52:44So Hannah Pixie cut, one of the mom central mom and the
- 1:52:50coordinator who we haven't even fucking gotten to that bitch.
- 1:52:53Yeah, we haven't gotten to. Those three are like the Trinity
- 1:52:58of the show. They are so well matched against
- 1:53:03each other and it is like K drama crack to see them up
- 1:53:08against each other. It is amazing.
- 1:53:11And again, like this Pixie cut lady is diabolical.
- 1:53:16Yep, you know she gets in the plant lady's face.
- 1:53:18The the line she kept saying to her, which is from their
- 1:53:20childhood, and she even also says that I think to the hair
- 1:53:22lady, but she's gonna rip your lips off your face, which I'm
- 1:53:25sure is like maybe a Korean common insult, but it's just
- 1:53:28like it sounds so much cooler than like I'll kick your ass and
- 1:53:30English. She's like, I will rip your lips
- 1:53:32off your face. I'll rip your lips.
- 1:53:34Off my face. Oh, my God.
- 1:53:36Rip your mouth. And you have no doubt.
- 1:53:37Yeah, You have no doubt she'll do it.
- 1:53:40Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:53:40Rip your mouth. Yeah.
- 1:53:41Something she's gonna do something.
- 1:53:42She's gonna rip your mouth. I just think she's a in various
- 1:53:46points you're like, oh, she's got us together and then
- 1:53:48suddenly she's a fucking lunatic.
- 1:53:51Yeah, it's got to be stifling to act like live a lie every day,
- 1:53:5524/7 to everyone. Yeah, to have like those crazy
- 1:53:58eyes and be intimidating, just actively intimidating people who
- 1:54:07for all intents and purposes, they're your friend, right?
- 1:54:12The moment. I like the moment when she outs
- 1:54:15herself with the plant lady. Oh yeah, that was crazy.
- 1:54:19In the in the clubhouse. Well, what about in the
- 1:54:21clubhouse too? Yeah.
- 1:54:23But yeah, in the street. In this for everyone's street
- 1:54:26and this is an early episode when she says her famous I'll
- 1:54:29rip your lips off your face or something, whatever that is.
- 1:54:33Yeah. And plant lady's like Oh my God,
- 1:54:37it's you. And she's like oh shit.
- 1:54:42I just gave it away that I'm this girl from her past and we
- 1:54:46went to school together and we have this little history.
- 1:54:50I love that moment because again, she's just.
- 1:54:54It's like a rabid animal. Like this lady.
- 1:54:57The Pixie cut lady acts like a rabid animal at times.
- 1:55:01That's what I'm saying. Like she's kind of feral because
- 1:55:04of how she grew up. Like she grew up unparented.
- 1:55:06She grew up with everyone hating her by virtue of where her
- 1:55:10station in life was, which she had no control over because she
- 1:55:12was a baby slash child. She believes she's been betrayed
- 1:55:16by her bestie. She trusts no one and she kind
- 1:55:18of isn't like she can, she's like this.
- 1:55:21And not to excuse it or anything, but just like she's a
- 1:55:23reason for why and how she can be so diabolical.
- 1:55:25And henna can kind of identify with it because she kind of has
- 1:55:29somewhat similar stuff going on where like a single mom, very
- 1:55:33poor sick mom, you know, knows she's better than everyone, at
- 1:55:37least academically and hates it, you know what I mean?
- 1:55:39So they kind of have these like chips on their shoulder And and
- 1:55:42it's interesting because even other people who come from the
- 1:55:45sheep, I guess comes from the worst social background the the
- 1:55:49the Pixie cut lady. But yeah, it's I try to just
- 1:55:52juxtapose her to the, I mean, probably orphanage parents
- 1:55:56weren't wealthy. So the plant mom is not like
- 1:55:59that. The orphan dad is not like that.
- 1:56:02The pyramid dad is not like her. Like, nobody is quite like her
- 1:56:05except for Hannah's, like the closest, but she's like another
- 1:56:08level. Oh.
- 1:56:12My God, it's like these she's there's so many moments that we
- 1:56:16could talk about with Pixie cut, but.
- 1:56:18Well, we need to go back to the coordinator because we fully
- 1:56:20glossed over her, OK? And we need to talk about the
- 1:56:22Goatee dad because we also glossed like that.
- 1:56:25We haven't talked about like the rest of the families too,
- 1:56:27because they're so, they're so important.
- 1:56:30So what do you want to what do you want to say about the Goatee
- 1:56:32Dad? I want to say that I mean it
- 1:56:36gets very mock Jungy, but I did like his acting despite it
- 1:56:39because he it is like crazy to be like, wait, you're telling me
- 1:56:42the person I sent to another hospital for possible surgery so
- 1:56:45I could like win favor with my boss or whatever to state, you
- 1:56:49know, treat his grandson is my daughter and like.
- 1:56:53That was like the best twist though.
- 1:56:55Like it was the most mock Jungy thing in the whole show.
- 1:56:58Yeah, but I lived it up because he deserved it.
- 1:57:03Not to say, oh God, this is terrible what he said, but like,
- 1:57:06I'm just they're. Not real people, they're not.
- 1:57:07Real people. This is a drama, but he fucking
- 1:57:10deserved what he got. He Hannah Hannah did not deserve
- 1:57:14it. Did not deserve to die.
- 1:57:17No. But the Father deserved that
- 1:57:23reckoning and that sort of cosmic punishment that he got.
- 1:57:29It's weird because the whole time he's kind of more affable
- 1:57:32compared to his wife. So you kind of don't like harbor
- 1:57:34ill will towards? That's what I mean.
- 1:57:37But then it this takes you out so hard and then you're like.
- 1:57:39He progressively gets more frustrating, especially because
- 1:57:44you realize even though he looks down, he looks down on his wife
- 1:57:48for her background, her upbringing, and he supports her
- 1:57:52lying to the children and the whole neighbourhood about her
- 1:57:56name and her identity and everything about her.
- 1:58:00He supports that because he's embarrassed about her.
- 1:58:03Plus he is super interested in upward mobility at work, so he's
- 1:58:10doing everything he can to get in the good graces of that
- 1:58:15chief. That old turtle, 1000 year old
- 1:58:18turtle as they called him. Like that was his nickname
- 1:58:20because they hated him and that whole thing.
- 1:58:24He was such a hypocrite. Yeah, because he did act like
- 1:58:28kind of holier than that in many ways.
- 1:58:30Like he's like, well, I'm not as bad as that everyone else here
- 1:58:33almost like the plant lady. But yet he had like terrible
- 1:58:36like the workplace politics of this.
- 1:58:39That piece of this drama was also interesting, if you're into
- 1:58:41that, because he is doing the most to like, manipulate
- 1:58:44something there and like, make make the other surgeon the
- 1:58:48husband of the beautiful hair lady, his lackey in a way,
- 1:58:51almost just like it's assumed that he's going to be the one up
- 1:58:54for promotion because he's like, yeah, I was number one, top of
- 1:58:57my class. So whatever he was like 20 or 30
- 1:58:59years ago. And they were building, the
- 1:59:01writer was building this case against him where Doctor Huang
- 1:59:05had already investigated him low key for his patient outcomes,
- 1:59:11because seemingly all his patients have terrible outcomes.
- 1:59:14They are in chronic pain, they don't end up well, and they have
- 1:59:20more issues after he does surgery on them.
- 1:59:22So. But his economic metrics are on
- 1:59:25point because he turns those patients out of their beds so
- 1:59:29fast. Yeah, he turns.
- 1:59:31Fast and he's making a lot of money for the hospital.
- 1:59:33So whatever he's doing is making patients spend more money at the
- 1:59:38hospital. So he's giving surgery, he's
- 1:59:41making them get surgeries when maybe they don't need surgeries
- 1:59:45and maybe they can use alternative methods, maybe
- 1:59:48injections or physical therapy and different other methods that
- 1:59:52can fix their issues without resorting to surgery, which is
- 1:59:57the most expensive option. All of these like unethical
- 2:00:02practices within the hospital, which is run like a business.
- 2:00:05And unfortunately, like, it's like that in the United States
- 2:00:07as well, is they're really building this case that he's not
- 2:00:11a very good doctor. Or he is, but he's not providing
- 2:00:13appropriate care. Like maybe he knows what to do,
- 2:00:15but he doesn't care about that. He cares more about like
- 2:00:16himself. Looking good.
- 2:00:17Exactly so. Then we get to this part of the
- 2:00:21show where mysteriously Hannah falls from like the fifth floor
- 2:00:27of the clubhouse during Ozo. With the Esso in the bedroom
- 2:00:30next door. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:00:33We don't know which kid did it or if a child of the Sky Castle
- 2:00:37crew did it and she is severely injured.
- 2:00:41She needs a. Surgery.
- 2:00:43Emergency surgery. She's eternally bleeding I
- 2:00:47think. She's a bright She's got like a
- 2:00:48brain bleed or something. So she needs a surgery from the
- 2:00:50neurosurgeon, Dr. Huang, the plant lady's husband, right?
- 2:00:55Because at this point, Goatee dad has finagled his way into
- 2:01:00getting a promotion and he's like the chief of the spine and
- 2:01:04Joint Center or something. He's also head of like.
- 2:01:08Yeah, Yeah. He's chief of like something
- 2:01:11finances. Yeah.
- 2:01:13Instead of the chief of the joint and spine center, which is
- 2:01:16what the Doctor Huang is the plant lady's husband.
- 2:01:19Yeah. Anyway, he got a higher
- 2:01:21position. He like wheeled and dealed and
- 2:01:24he's got a higher position and he changes the order of the
- 2:01:27surgeries. Because the because Turtle's
- 2:01:30grandson was in a some kind of accident as well the same.
- 2:01:33State. The.
- 2:01:35Hospital director's grandson, 9 year old grandson also came in
- 2:01:39with a very almost an identical injury.
- 2:01:43Also needs brain surgery. But after henna.
- 2:01:46That's but he came in after henna.
- 2:01:49So they prioritized him just cause of who he is and henna got
- 2:01:53transported to another hospital which there's no time for that
- 2:01:56and he knows. That, and he knows that.
- 2:01:58He knows he just doomed henna, he was very unlikely that she
- 2:02:01was going to make it to another hospital to receive this life
- 2:02:04saving surgery and he basically kills his own daughter.
- 2:02:10But doesn't know at the time that she is his daughter.
- 2:02:13So good. That's why I said it's so good,
- 2:02:18because like, you're there and the audience knows and this
- 2:02:22fucking bitch Pixie cut knows that's his daughter and doesn't
- 2:02:28say shit. To him that entire time and then
- 2:02:32Channy crying his a little heart out for her so heartbreaking, so
- 2:02:37hard to drink and then getting arrested for it.
- 2:02:39OK, we can't go back to we can't go back to Channy right now
- 2:02:40anyways. We already talked about that.
- 2:02:42Yeah. But yeah, so he gets trained
- 2:02:43for. Him that's murder later but yeah
- 2:02:45the dad fucking himself over because of his unethical.
- 2:02:52And mind you, as a viewer, we're already grappling with the fact
- 2:02:55that Yesso and Henna are sisters, almost like twins or
- 2:02:58Irish twins, whoever know of it. I don't know if that's offensive
- 2:03:00or not, but I know that that's like a phrase some people use
- 2:03:02sometimes. But because they're so close in
- 2:03:04age, I mean, they're from different mothers, so it's a
- 2:03:05different situation. But they are.
- 2:03:07They're half sisters enemies. And half.
- 2:03:09Sisters and they hate each other they hate each other she's.
- 2:03:12Tight with Yebbing and she's Yebbing sister too.
- 2:03:15Half sister too. So that's like another crazy
- 2:03:17component. She is the one person that.
- 2:03:20Right. So here's the.
- 2:03:21Here's the order. If if people that are listening
- 2:03:24and they don't intend on watching Crack Castle.
- 2:03:26So it's Pixie Cut is married to the goatee.
- 2:03:29I'm sorry, I just have to make this clear.
- 2:03:30So Pixie Cut is married to the goatee Dr. Yeah, they have two
- 2:03:35daughters. One is Yeso, who's at the center
- 2:03:38of this whole freaking thing. She's the one in high school and
- 2:03:41in high school, and she has a younger sister or a younger
- 2:03:45daughter in middle school, in middle school named Yebin.
- 2:03:47So Yeso and Yebin and Henna who goes to school with you?
- 2:03:52So. And they fucking hate each
- 2:03:55other. They're both neck and neck for
- 2:03:57#1 Hannah is a bit like Channy. Who would you would you?
- 2:04:03I was like what? Where is he?
- 2:04:05Would you? He's also like they're they
- 2:04:08don't go to like Hogwan or whatever.
- 2:04:09And they're both really good. And she like tutors people for
- 2:04:11cash because she's a very sick mom who's single mom.
- 2:04:14She's know who her dad is and she eventually finds out.
- 2:04:17It's go T, Dad. It's go T, Dad.
- 2:04:19And goatee dad basically condemns her to.
- 2:04:22Death without realizing that that's his daughter without
- 2:04:26realizing he didn't even know he had another daughter.
- 2:04:27Yeah. Yeah, but guess who's?
- 2:04:29New so much. Picks a cut.
- 2:04:31Picks a cut new. The fact that she hides that
- 2:04:34from him for. Over a.
- 2:04:36Year and she does seem like she's gonna tell him or tries to
- 2:04:40tell him or wants to tell him or something, but then does it and
- 2:04:42then can just sit the way she just sits with that with at the
- 2:04:45dinner table and like Henna's like playing her and like
- 2:04:48wrapping around her finger and saying things like I want to sit
- 2:04:50at the dinner table with Ebbing and I want to lie lay in the bed
- 2:04:52with Ebbing and I want blah, blah, blah.
- 2:04:53And she's giving herself she wants so she doesn't tell her
- 2:04:56husband like, you know, I'm your daughter.
- 2:04:58But then at the same time as calmly sitting with her at the
- 2:05:00breakfast table or dinner table or whatever, I just was like.
- 2:05:02I'm like, she's just like, that's why I said she's like.
- 2:05:05She's just like I thought she was.
- 2:05:07The Pixie cut is a psycho. Exactly, exactly.
- 2:05:11You have to just be. You have to be out of your mind.
- 2:05:14So then he's OK. So the goatee dad is grieving
- 2:05:17like crazy because he's like, he's just like an utter.
- 2:05:19Well, when Yeben tells him finally so his younger daughter
- 2:05:22Yeben being the one to tell. Oh my.
- 2:05:25God. Oh, what a moment.
- 2:05:29Because she's like he, Oh my God, it's just, are you even
- 2:05:32human? Are you even a person?
- 2:05:34Because Oh my God, it's so mocked on because the Pixie cut,
- 2:05:39Pixie cut says, oh, today is Henna's funeral.
- 2:05:43He goes, oh, I'm going golfing with, you know, so and so.
- 2:05:49And she's like I've told you for multiple days now, two days to
- 2:05:52funeral you, you have to come. You need to come.
- 2:05:56You're going to regret it if you don't come.
- 2:05:59And she still doesn't just say Still.
- 2:06:01Fucking doesn't tell him that's your daughter.
- 2:06:04Come to the funeral of your daughter.
- 2:06:08She's like, you'll regret it, OK, Why?
- 2:06:10Why will he regret it? Why?
- 2:06:11She doesn't say it. She doesn't say she's a coward.
- 2:06:13She's instead gathering his golf clubs and all that crap.
- 2:06:16Like I was getting so mad. Oh my God.
- 2:06:18So then he goes golfing, he comes back drunk as a skunk, and
- 2:06:23that's when Yevin, his youngest daughter.
- 2:06:27We had to be find out. I forgot, I forgot.
- 2:06:30How does she find out? Oh, because the whole community
- 2:06:35starts to find out. Hair overheard Hannah and Nesso
- 2:06:42arguing the day of the accident, the morning of the accident, and
- 2:06:47that's when she realizes, oh, they're siblings.
- 2:06:50They're half siblings. That's cock Goss, she tells Bob
- 2:06:54Cut. This is crazy.
- 2:06:56And then they. Pyramid dad's wife.
- 2:06:59Yeah, Pyramid dad's wife and they talk with Pixie Cut at the
- 2:07:04funeral girl. They're sitting down like in the
- 2:07:07funeral hall talking with Bixie Cut and they let it slip cause
- 2:07:12side swept hair is a big blobbermouth.
- 2:07:15She's talking loud all the time. That's right, and Yeben over
- 2:07:19and. Yeben walks by and overhears and
- 2:07:21she's like Oh my God, even more devastated.
- 2:07:23She was the only person who showed the proper amount of
- 2:07:28sadness and grief toward. Him she loved.
- 2:07:31Tenna she loved. Her, yeah.
- 2:07:34Except Channy. Poor Channy.
- 2:07:35Yeah, except Channy who like loved her too, but it like
- 2:07:38differently romantically. Romantically loved her, yeah,
- 2:07:41yeah. But Uju was also her friend.
- 2:07:42So true. True, true.
- 2:07:44So anyway, so yeben that night her dad didn't show for the
- 2:07:48funeral, comes back drunk as a skunk after golf.
- 2:07:51She gives them hell. She's like, aren't you in bed?
- 2:07:54She says something like, aren't you embarrassed to be like this
- 2:07:58when your daughter, you didn't attend your daughter's funeral,
- 2:08:02like Hannah's your daughter, I think she says you can't even
- 2:08:06call yourself a human, right? Something like that.
- 2:08:09And I love that line that she said you're inhuman.
- 2:08:13Well, he. Didn't know but like so it's a
- 2:08:15bit unfair but also. Also.
- 2:08:17I also I do. Already skipped it.
- 2:08:20You can't. You can't.
- 2:08:20Yeah, you can move golf, right. I think he.
- 2:08:23Skips it because he does feel guilty that he knows he sent
- 2:08:26some girl to her untimely death. Yes, and it's a girl he knows
- 2:08:29because whether or not he knows it's their daughter.
- 2:08:30He knows Hannah. He knows.
- 2:08:31Living in your house. Yeah, his house, so he knows.
- 2:08:33Henna, classmate of his daughters, tutor of his other
- 2:08:37daughter. It's not like she's just nobody
- 2:08:40rando. He knew her.
- 2:08:41And lived in her house ate her his food he offered her a raise
- 2:08:46or whatever extra pocket money whatever when you having did
- 2:08:48well so they had this established relationship.
- 2:08:51It hits him so hard like a ton of bricks when ya been says that
- 2:08:55and he can't cope. He just can't cope.
- 2:08:57He's like having a nervous breakdown from his mom at the
- 2:08:59like, fancy wherever she's hanging out with her.
- 2:09:02Friends, I love that and he just embarrasses the shit out of her
- 2:09:05and I'm like do it, say it louder, wailed loudly.
- 2:09:09And she doesn't care. She does not care because she's
- 2:09:11very single minded and she still wants him to be the head of
- 2:09:15blah, blah, whatever CFO or whatever he is at this hospital
- 2:09:18and wants. Yeah, So to be third generation
- 2:09:21doctor, he is like, I'm quitting.
- 2:09:22I don't even want to work. I don't want to be a surgeon.
- 2:09:25I don't wanna do this anymore. This, this pursuit of yours.
- 2:09:28He's like, it wasn't even my pursuit.
- 2:09:29I don't know, 'cause it was your pursuit for me.
- 2:09:32It almost kills me. It does kill my daughter.
- 2:09:35You don't even care, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 2:09:37And it's just like this whole breakdown of communications,
- 2:09:39which I feel like it again, like some Asian cultures and not say
- 2:09:43other cultures don't, but I can only speak for my culture.
- 2:09:46There's a lot of that. There's a lot of that where it's
- 2:09:47like people are so single minded about whatever thing, whatever
- 2:09:50they deem to be success or whatever the goal is that
- 2:09:53everything else does fall to the wayside.
- 2:09:55She doesn't care what he wants. That's not the point.
- 2:09:58She doesn't care that someone died, you know, necessarily if
- 2:10:01it means like, you know, he's not gonna be CFO of this
- 2:10:03hospital, right? Or whatever it is.
- 2:10:05She, that is her thing forever. She's 70, whatever years old,
- 2:10:08however old she is, I don't know.
- 2:10:09Still, she's like this in her eyes, that's her son and her son
- 2:10:12has to be the best. Doesn't matter that he's 45
- 2:10:14years old or whatever. Whatever he is, Yeah, Yeah.
- 2:10:18It's kind of crazy, but. It's super crazy because she's
- 2:10:21like, yeah, why don't we talk somewhere else?
- 2:10:24How how can you do this in front of all of the customers?
- 2:10:28And he's like, my daughter, you're not hearing me.
- 2:10:31My I killed my daughter. Which is her granddaughter.
- 2:10:36Her granddaughter. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:10:38Yeah, just as much as yeah so and yeah, Bean, but she does not
- 2:10:41really care. Yeah, like she's so single.
- 2:10:43She's like, this is so embarrassing.
- 2:10:44Like I had my own. She's like, what about my soup?
- 2:10:47I put in an order soup so oh. My God, like, slap some sense
- 2:10:53into these people. And he finally does have this
- 2:10:57cathartic moment where he tells his mother, you know, I never
- 2:11:01even wanted to go to medical school.
- 2:11:03That was something that you wanted to do.
- 2:11:05So I'm giving up your dream, not my dad.
- 2:11:08I love those moments. That she wanted for him.
- 2:11:10There's so much living vicariously in a way through
- 2:11:13your kids. And like, again, this whole
- 2:11:15concept of like their success is yours to own and keep in a way.
- 2:11:19Yeah. And it was.
- 2:11:20And it's a credit to you. It's so weird in a way because
- 2:11:23I, I don't think we have this, I guess throughout the US, if it
- 2:11:26may be in, I don't know, Korean American communities, I don't
- 2:11:29know. But it doesn't exist in the US
- 2:11:30in the same same way where it's like it's, you know, Aunt Becky
- 2:11:33did what she had to do for her daughter.
- 2:11:34She thought, but it wasn't like, yeah, my daughter's at USC cuz,
- 2:11:37you know, and that's my all credit is due to me.
- 2:11:40I don't know. It's just it's different.
- 2:11:42I feel like here. Yeah, you don't necessarily get
- 2:11:46clout. I mean, I guess you do.
- 2:11:48I don't know. It's not just but I.
- 2:11:50Don't think someone else is not going to throw you a party
- 2:11:53because your kid got into Harvard Medical School, No.
- 2:11:58You're just like, oh wow, that's great, Congrats, that's the end
- 2:12:01of it. Like.
- 2:12:02I don't know, you might be like, slip me the number of the tutor
- 2:12:05or whatever. The SAT cab person.
- 2:12:07Yeah, but you're not gonna be like, let me throw a little mini
- 2:12:09ballroom, whatever. Viennese, the Flopster and the
- 2:12:14whole and string quartet. Yeah, in your honor.
- 2:12:16No, but the mother and him saying you raised me wrong, my
- 2:12:22life is an empty shell, is what he told the family.
- 2:12:26He also was upset that he couldn't recognize that Henna
- 2:12:29was his daughter, which I I found that interesting.
- 2:12:31I mean, I don't have kids but I wonder like if that's the thing
- 2:12:34I feel like it would could be. That he didn't feel any
- 2:12:36connection. Yeah, he was so blinded by his
- 2:12:39own ambition and everything, whatever was going on in his
- 2:12:42life. Yeah, that he's just like, OK,
- 2:12:44the help. We have our servant, we have our
- 2:12:46in house tutor. Yeah, like he and she even
- 2:12:50looked at him and was like up like when she's dying.
- 2:12:52Oh my God. And he's he like, saw it but
- 2:12:55didn't see it, didn't register. I don't know where he was.
- 2:12:58Like, she's delirious because she's dying.
- 2:13:00I don't know what he thought, but yeah.
- 2:13:02Or I like the fact that they were calling each other out on
- 2:13:06this in the final episodes about they did not care what happened
- 2:13:11to other people's children. They did not.
- 2:13:14They did not. They other people's children
- 2:13:17could commit suicide, could die. I mean, dire things could happen
- 2:13:23to other people's children, but it didn't matter.
- 2:13:24It's somebody else's problem, somebody else's story.
- 2:13:28It would never happen to me because I'm different.
- 2:13:32There's like an arrogance about these people and there was an
- 2:13:38arrogance about him when he made that call to not save Hannah.
- 2:13:44I do think I mean you like you said yourself, he held this
- 2:13:48maybe resentment, definite judginess towards his wife for
- 2:13:50being from a low class family and lower socioeconomic class
- 2:13:53any and it probably extended to the help whoever he consider the
- 2:13:59help. So he didn't really bat an eye
- 2:14:00and Hannah or think much of her outside of like, Oh, my
- 2:14:03daughter's happy. So here he calls into question
- 2:14:05his whole mentality about who? Whose lives have value.
- 2:14:10Because I killed my daughter and I thought she had no value.
- 2:14:14I thought she was a nobody. It's crazy.
- 2:14:17It's crazy. That was, even though it was Mac
- 2:14:19Jung, it was in like a bit ostentatious.
- 2:14:22Yeah, still in a way believable or something.
- 2:14:24It resonated, I'll say that. I agree, but we had to talk
- 2:14:28about the coordinator. OK, The coordinator is the last
- 2:14:30person that we have to talk about.
- 2:14:32We could talk at length specifics about what happens to
- 2:14:37each character and specifically Pixie cut because she has a lot
- 2:14:41of shit that she does and says, but we can't go into that
- 2:14:46because the coordinator, Oh my God, what you got to say about
- 2:14:49the coordinator? Another one with a secret
- 2:14:53identity. There's some parallels to some
- 2:14:55of this stuff with the with the Pixie cut.
- 2:14:57Yeah, So's mom. Lying about your past and who
- 2:15:00you are. Lying about your past having
- 2:15:02different names cuz she was Jenny or Kim or something.
- 2:15:06Jennifer. Yeah, Jennifer Kim and from
- 2:15:10like, but that's Virginia somewhere in the she was in.
- 2:15:13Fairfax, VA Yeah, yeah. Fairfax, VA.
- 2:15:16Apparently, there's a thriving area in American community in
- 2:15:20Fairfax, VA. Could be, could well be, yeah.
- 2:15:23And then her daughter, she basically was a bit like, yes,
- 2:15:27So's mom, but her daughter was a already a genius.
- 2:15:31Like a prodigy, yeah. Georgetown or GW or one of those
- 2:15:34places at. GW.
- 2:15:35Yeah, OK. And then she is having some kind
- 2:15:38of fight with her husband and then she might or might not have
- 2:15:43cut the brakes on her husband's car, but her daughter was in the
- 2:15:46car and they get into an accident.
- 2:15:47The. Husband died?
- 2:15:47No, she did cut the brakes on her head.
- 2:15:49OK so she gets accused of this Is this was a whole thing
- 2:15:54throughout the show? Like did she or did she not kill
- 2:15:57her husband by cutting the brakes on his car?
- 2:16:00Was there ever a doubt? Like absolutely she did this.
- 2:16:05Right, She, I mean, she was just as cutthroat as other as like,
- 2:16:08you know, yes, as mom of like we, I have to make the most out
- 2:16:11of my genius prodigy child. And he's like, can she live?
- 2:16:15And he's, she's like, no, not, not through anything but
- 2:16:17academics. And then she's like, but you
- 2:16:19can't live either. Literally tries to kill him.
- 2:16:21But the daughter's in the car when this happens.
- 2:16:23And so she becomes disabled and the prodigy stuff is gone.
- 2:16:27She's not gonna like develop the the average pace of other
- 2:16:30people, intellectually or otherwise.
- 2:16:33So she just like hides her in some creepy house, like a safe
- 2:16:37house. Literally in the mountains.
- 2:16:40Yeah, watches her in the woods like again.
- 2:16:42A creeper, She's a. She can't, she can't face her I
- 2:16:46guess, or doesn't want to be in her presence or something so she
- 2:16:49barely ever sees her. Gives her lots of toy gifts and
- 2:16:53the kid is just doing like math equations or whatever in her.
- 2:16:56This has that prodigy. It's so creepy why she dressed
- 2:17:00as her in a dress was like beyond.
- 2:17:02I was like, oh. My.
- 2:17:03God, why the why the child's frilly dress like?
- 2:17:07Why not just dress like a little?
- 2:17:09Communion dress, you know what I'm saying?
- 2:17:11Like a. It had a rough, like a little
- 2:17:14rough rough. And.
- 2:17:16Taffeta. Yeah, it's just bizarre, like.
- 2:17:20It just made it so creepy. Yeah, anyway, so this lady is a
- 2:17:25whole mess, a whole last mess and she was mentally ill like as
- 2:17:32well. So definitely, definitely she
- 2:17:36was she was out to get these elite families as as basically
- 2:17:41as revenge like for what she did herself to her own daughter,
- 2:17:48like she shot. Herself, some foot flagellation
- 2:17:50she did through other people. It's not even self flagellation
- 2:17:53because it's not really hurting her to do this to the other
- 2:17:57families. It's it's like if I shot myself
- 2:18:00in the foot, now everybody else has to get shot in the foot.
- 2:18:04And that's what she was doing. She was and the tactics that she
- 2:18:08was using to like get into the kids heads and yeah, shake their
- 2:18:13confidence and make them dependent on her.
- 2:18:16She was literally grooming them. Grooming.
- 2:18:19It was crazy. Yeah, I love when people bring
- 2:18:22up grooming in K dramas because I'm like, this is a very
- 2:18:27textbook. This one is, and I feel like
- 2:18:30sometimes people use that word so lightly.
- 2:18:32They do. They're like, oh, it's flippant,
- 2:18:34like, oh, it's the man's older than the woman by 10 years.
- 2:18:38Oh, he's grooming her. No, slow down.
- 2:18:40Like that's not the case. But 100% of the time this, this
- 2:18:45is 100% grooming. And it's scary grooming because
- 2:18:51she's got them locked in like a window.
- 2:18:53Even when she shows the like flashback of like touching young
- 2:18:56Jays, I don't know somebody. It was very sexual, like did you
- 2:19:00get those sexual overtones? I was upset.
- 2:19:02I didn't want to. It's upsetting.
- 2:19:04It's rejecting. I rebuke it it.
- 2:19:08Was highly upsetting to see her like do the one-on-one
- 2:19:12meditations with the kids which was basically her conditioning
- 2:19:16them to to be reliant on her for everything.
- 2:19:20So manipulative, so conniving. And they already like, it's such
- 2:19:24a long con and like they have all this trust in her and faith
- 2:19:27in her and she's their one hope. They're saving grace.
- 2:19:30Of course, they have this, like, over dependence on her and
- 2:19:33overly trustworthy of her. Yeah, it was so upsetting.
- 2:19:37And she messed young Jay up so bad.
- 2:19:40Oh my gosh. Was on the way to messing up
- 2:19:42ESO. For sure, but I mean at first
- 2:19:45you don't realize the extent of her manipulation tactics with
- 2:19:51young Jet. Like even when she says that
- 2:19:53little story to him, the bedtime story of that couple in the in
- 2:19:59the olden times who had this in and they would kill their
- 2:20:06patrons and bury them. Under the floorboards or
- 2:20:10whatever of their their establishment basically on the
- 2:20:13property and then suddenly they have a couple of kids and they
- 2:20:18do everything possible to make sure that they are successful
- 2:20:21and can pass the state exam. This is like in a saga, like
- 2:20:26something you would see in a saga.
- 2:20:27It's a historical like little Yeah ditty that she's telling
- 2:20:31Yong Jay. And they do.
- 2:20:34They pass the state exam and they have high-ranking
- 2:20:36positions. And when they return to their
- 2:20:38little town, they instantly fall dead.
- 2:20:44Just keel over. And die.
- 2:20:46I was trying to make sense of this.
- 2:20:48Oh allegory. Oh really?
- 2:20:51Well I just was like, not sure how she was what she's trying to
- 2:20:54tell him about. Well, I just think it was like a
- 2:20:56karmic thing, like she was like, you reap what you sow.
- 2:20:59What they reaped was death and destruction.
- 2:21:03And they did. They were killing the patrons
- 2:21:06that came to their inn in order to steal their money.
- 2:21:11And then they expected their children to be successful and
- 2:21:16and wonderful and great and studied well.
- 2:21:18And you know they can't. You can't have.
- 2:21:22You can't. And that's how we planted this
- 2:21:23seed of like. Your mom is not your like friend
- 2:21:25in this situation, right? Has she well or no?
- 2:21:30I think the the seed was when your parents are they're
- 2:21:33happiest, that's when you exact your revenge like they're in
- 2:21:38that little story. The karmic revenge was your
- 2:21:42children died as a result of what the shit that you
- 2:21:45committed. Yeah.
- 2:21:48And what she's saying was you can do that.
- 2:21:50You can create that same effect manually in your life by taking
- 2:21:56away this happiness from your parents.
- 2:22:00As soon as you give it to them, you take it away, commit this
- 2:22:03revenge against them. And she was very vague about
- 2:22:05like what this revenge would be. She.
- 2:22:07Kind of left. Well, he disowns.
- 2:22:09He ended. The letter he disowns.
- 2:22:11Yeah, yeah. Which is probably like the Yeah,
- 2:22:14I don't. Know and that's why the mom
- 2:22:16commits suicide at the beginning because she was.
- 2:22:18He's like she thought she lost her son.
- 2:22:20Yeah, completely. Completely like he cut her off.
- 2:22:26Like forget the Med school, I think she was more devastated
- 2:22:30that she's lost her son. I know I was wondering about
- 2:22:33that because it's hard to tell with her cuz she is saw her so
- 2:22:35little cuz it's like what if that happened to ESO's mom?
- 2:22:39Part of you is like, I mean, she did love her ESO.
- 2:22:42You can't deny it, I guess, but it's so it's.
- 2:22:43Not like she didn't love her, but it was a very.
- 2:22:45It's toxic. It's a toxic love.
- 2:22:48And it almost seems like it could have been, but we don't.
- 2:22:51Again, it's a bit blurry, like transactional.
- 2:22:54If you go exactly, exactly, then I will continue to love you.
- 2:22:59Very conditional. Yeah.
- 2:22:59So yeah, she was feeding these kids some shit, like every time.
- 2:23:04And then like you come to find out she wasn't even tutoring
- 2:23:07them. Honestly, she was stealing.
- 2:23:12OK, this is the thing. I thought everybody knew this
- 2:23:15was happening the whole time, like from the bank meeting.
- 2:23:18I was like, what do you think is happening here?
- 2:23:20You think these people, the, the percentages they were giving
- 2:23:22like 9900%, everyone gets into Seoul National University Med
- 2:23:26school. That's what the hell else could
- 2:23:27be possibly happening. They're cheating.
- 2:23:29Yeah, yeah, yeah. And they have access to the
- 2:23:32CSAT. CI don't know what to say.
- 2:23:34Pronounce it CSAT beforehand right?
- 2:23:37You know. They have access to something,
- 2:23:39whether it was their, I think they were stealing their
- 2:23:41school's questions, finals, like finals and midterms questions.
- 2:23:46Either way, either way, to me, you should have realized or to
- 2:23:49me, I was like thought that's, I thought that's what was going on
- 2:23:51the whole time that you're buying a coordinator in quotes
- 2:23:54to cheat, very similar to Aunt Becky.
- 2:23:57It's not like she didn't know that her kid didn't play water
- 2:24:00polo or whatever, you know what I mean?
- 2:24:01Like. They know we're gonna have to
- 2:24:03put this story of Aunt Becky like Lori Loughlin's in there,
- 2:24:08because I can't remember exactly what she did.
- 2:24:10I don't, I don't even know if that was her kid, but there was
- 2:24:12like a gang of parents. It was not.
- 2:24:14It was not just her either. Yeah, it was like.
- 2:24:16A bunch, it was a bunch of parents and one of the things
- 2:24:19that this guy or people or whoever offered was things like
- 2:24:22staging photos with like a canoe or whatever, whatever they call
- 2:24:27those things and saying you're on crew and you you row crew and
- 2:24:30and with water polo and saying you play water polo.
- 2:24:33You may have never seen fake extra thing.
- 2:24:35Yeah, yes. And get taking photographs as
- 2:24:38though it's proof that you do this.
- 2:24:39I don't know what college application requires you to
- 2:24:41submit photos that you did these things, but that's what these
- 2:24:44people were doing. I mean, massive fraud, like it's
- 2:24:47just, but this was fraud as well.
- 2:24:51And yes, it was so naive of the parents to think that they were
- 2:24:56just like. Why would it cost this much if
- 2:25:01it wasn't high stakes? Cheating Like that was my thing.
- 2:25:03I was like, well, what the hell is It was happening.
- 2:25:05Millions of well, they were saying billions of one, but in
- 2:25:08U.S. dollars it would be millions of dollars.
- 2:25:13Of course they're cheating. How can they care?
- 2:25:15That's what. I thought that's literally what
- 2:25:17I was so confused by the end when they're all shocked and
- 2:25:19dismayed that these are actual test questions, not just to
- 2:25:24really like coincidentally. Lucky.
- 2:25:26And the fact that the kids were also bamboozled.
- 2:25:29Like none of them put two and two together.
- 2:25:31I thought you were supposed to be smart.
- 2:25:33Yeah, I thought you guys were smart.
- 2:25:34Like as soon as you guys finished the 1st test, you guys
- 2:25:37should have been like, Oh my God, all the questions that I'd
- 2:25:41studied were on the test. How SUS.
- 2:25:46They never put two and two together.
- 2:25:48To range. I mean, they didn't sleep, get
- 2:25:50much sleep, so maybe that's why. But no, yeah, they weren't
- 2:25:52fired. But cylinders, yeah, it was very
- 2:25:56weird. That's only one.
- 2:25:57Maybe my biggest hang up of the show was that Parks, I was like,
- 2:25:59what did you think was happening?
- 2:26:01What did you think you were paying for?
- 2:26:02What did you think was going on? How could she guarantee
- 2:26:04anything? Why did you listen to her and
- 2:26:07bend her every word and will? I thought this was all like an
- 2:26:09elaborate ploy to make sure she gives your feeds your kids the
- 2:26:12test questions. That's that was what I was
- 2:26:14thinking. Yeah.
- 2:26:15But I don't know actually. I'm not sure if we have much
- 2:26:17else to say about this show. Like, we went through every
- 2:26:21character. Yeah, I think so.
- 2:26:24I just want to reiterate again that I really again, I think the
- 2:26:27acting was on point for what it was because it could have been
- 2:26:30in some and it could have been mock Jung in the way that's
- 2:26:32annoying like how you don't yeah, her to watch those things.
- 2:26:35But they did a good job of being restraint and practicing
- 2:26:38restraint in certain areas and the kids also.
- 2:26:41I just again, I'm shocked with the girl who played Yeah, Bean
- 2:26:44acted so well and showed so many different emotions.
- 2:26:47Yeah, so too because she's annoying, but she had her
- 2:26:50vulnerable moments. She was friendless.
- 2:26:52She had a crush on Unrequited Live with Wuju.
- 2:26:56So, yeah, so she was rotten. Like she was selfish.
- 2:27:00And I love when the plant lady is like, what are you going to
- 2:27:02do with that spoiled, selfish daughter of yours?
- 2:27:07Like you can't, you can't do anything with her.
- 2:27:09Nobody wants to be around her. Like she has no respect for
- 2:27:13elders and adults. And she's like a terror.
- 2:27:18It was so evident that she was right like and nobody wanted to
- 2:27:22work with her when she tried to get away from the coordinator
- 2:27:24and was trying to set up other teams and get in on other study
- 2:27:28groups. Like none of the other moms and
- 2:27:30students would allow her yes O in because she burned every
- 2:27:35bridge in town just being super condescending and mean to the
- 2:27:41other students. Yeah, no one's going to want to
- 2:27:44study with you, bitch like it no life.
- 2:27:48The coordinator as well, like she maniacal madness coming up
- 2:27:56in waves off of her by the end of the show.
- 2:27:59Yeah, the desperation. The desperation, she tried to
- 2:28:01kill her child. Like what I was like, she's a
- 2:28:04coward. Like there's so.
- 2:28:05Many. I thought it was going to be
- 2:28:06murder. Suicide.
- 2:28:07Me too. Me too.
- 2:28:08Like they were going to both eat porridge or something, which I'm
- 2:28:11not sure that they weren't. Maybe they were.
- 2:28:13It was Curry. Oh, Curry.
- 2:28:15Sorry. They were going to eat poisoned
- 2:28:18Curry and die together, mother and daughter.
- 2:28:21But then she finally got in the room with her daughter and felt
- 2:28:26some type of way. Yeah, finally.
- 2:28:29It was so sad to see the the daughter go.
- 2:28:32I'm sorry. I'll study harder.
- 2:28:33It's just like she knew she created.
- 2:28:35This whole situation is her own. Is her own making of her own
- 2:28:41making she. Did this to her own daughter the
- 2:28:45whole like time the plant lady was like, you're you guys are
- 2:28:47all so greedy. Your greed is getting to you.
- 2:28:49And that also applied to the coordinator.
- 2:28:52I think that's it's, it's interesting.
- 2:28:53I don't again, I don't have kids, but like, I think it's
- 2:28:55something to think about for parents about like one's own
- 2:28:58greed and one's own aspirations that they're, they're sort of
- 2:29:01like putting on their kids that may not because not your life to
- 2:29:05live, it's your kids life to live.
- 2:29:07But I think some parents would disagree, at least based on this
- 2:29:10drama. Yeah.
- 2:29:12Also, I think I have one note here that I was like, oh, I
- 2:29:15should say this. The Pixie cut.
- 2:29:16I think she had a Pixie cut because hair in Confucian belief
- 2:29:21connects you to your parents. And she wanted nothing to do
- 2:29:25with her history, her parents, her father in particular, with
- 2:29:30her past. And she, it's like she's cutting
- 2:29:33it off, like cutting off all that connection.
- 2:29:36I thought it was really important that she had a Pixie
- 2:29:38cut. That's a good point.
- 2:29:40That's a very good point, yeah, 'cause you kind of had to wonder
- 2:29:43why she 'cause there's so much like displays of femininity and
- 2:29:46blah, blah, whatever. And she did dress in like, you
- 2:29:49know, dresses and jewelry and heels and things that are
- 2:29:52associated with feminism, femininity.
- 2:29:53I mean. And she, but she had the short
- 2:29:55hair, which right now in Korea is not considered a good thing
- 2:30:01for anti feminist people because they think that means you are a
- 2:30:03feminist, which is a really considered a bad thing in some
- 2:30:06parts of Korean society. So, yeah, it's very, it is
- 2:30:08interesting, Yeah. We could talk way more about Sky
- 2:30:12Castle. If you want to talk to us about
- 2:30:14Sky Castle, we are totally game. We are totally game.
- 2:30:18Meena, where can people find you online?
- 2:30:21Well, I will always respond to DMS on Instagram.
- 2:30:25I am K pop bookshelf. I do have my own podcast, K Pop
- 2:30:29Bookshelf. It's, it's a bit of a misnomer
- 2:30:31'cause I don't only talk about K Pop actually most of the time
- 2:30:33talk about other stuff, Korean history and sociology and stuff
- 2:30:36like that. So check it out.
- 2:30:38It's like AK bookshelf. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:30:41I gotta reel you guys in somehow.
- 2:30:42So I call the K Pop bookshelf. But I do also talk about K Pop
- 2:30:45sometimes. That's all.
- 2:30:45Yeah. All right, Mina, thank you so
- 2:30:48much for coming on the podcast and talking at length about Sky
- 2:30:51Castle. This was so much fun.
- 2:30:53Is there anything else you want to say about Sky Castle before
- 2:30:56we get out of here? I actually would just really
- 2:30:58encourage people to give it a chance.
- 2:30:59If we have piqued your interest and you didn't watch it or other
- 2:31:03people have told you like now is the time, now is the time to
- 2:31:06just watch it. Even though you're like, I don't
- 2:31:07know if it's for me, Just give it a chance, that's all.
- 2:31:10Only thing I would say I agree we highly recommend it.
- 2:31:13Please reach out to us if you want to talk about Sky Castle
- 2:31:17more because there is so much we actually did not talk about
- 2:31:21about this show and a lot of specifics that are even crazier
- 2:31:26that we just didn't talk about. But that's been our show.
- 2:31:29Thank you for having OH. My God, yes.
- 2:31:31Thank you. Thank you.
- 2:31:32That's been our show. I'm Jessica and this has been
- 2:31:35the Tabaki Rambles podcast. Tell you the truth, sometimes we
- 2:31:50live and listen. I all right, it's a it's faker.
- 2:32:08Shut it up.
