- 1:32Pat mccrack and Johnny returning your Car. Oh Hi, Pat, Oh,
- 1:34Southern California High Vacation on expensive count I love it. Well, don't
- 1:38overdo it just because the Jolly Roger might interfit with that vacation you'd planned.
- 1:44No, right, a minuet. You promise full expenses. Okay, when
- 1:48are you coming back to hot as soon as that? Claire out the Lamar
- 1:51case one. Okay, expenses on it now. Yeah, Pat, this
- 1:55is a case that'll make your hair curl tonight and every weekday night. Bob
- 2:07Bailey in the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Pact. Expense account
- 2:10America's fabulous freelance insurance Investigator Yours, truly, Johnny Dollar. Expense accounts submitted
- 2:30by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the Universal Adjustment Bureau Hertford, Connecticut. The
- 2:36following is an accounting of expendit yours during my investigation of the Lamar matter expense
- 2:42account. I forget it. I'm on vacation as far from Hertford, Connecticut
- 2:47center of the insurance business as I can get. Yeah, I'm in La
- 2:51Jolla, California, and I'm staying in a big ritzy motel called El Crescenta
- 2:57alone. Oh, there is a girl down here, A lot of them
- 3:04in facts, but one in particular, Fronnie Lamar. Her name is sounds
- 3:09like somebody in show business, doesn't it. But she isn't tall five feet
- 3:15eight brunette, pretty as the devil, And I gave her the line that
- 3:19my so called business back east consists of nothing more exciting than running a filling
- 3:23station. How can you afford to come all the way out here to California
- 3:30for a vacation, to say nothing of staying at the El CRESCENTA rich uncle,
- 3:35Fannie died and left me a couple of thousands to do with as I
- 3:38see fit. This is the way I see fit. Only a couple of
- 3:40thousand. Mmmm. Gee, that's too bad. A couple of hundred thousand.
- 3:46I might really fall for you, Oh Ronnie, how can you hmm?
- 3:51Here? I thought these last three days and evenings with you were due
- 3:54solely to my overwhelming personal charms. Your charm has nothing to do with kissed
- 4:01me again? Anyhow? With Vannie around, who needed a couple one hundred
- 4:11grand? The Yeah, I was just about all anyone could ask for.
- 4:15And I don't mean for just a quick vacation time romance. I'd spotted her
- 4:19the minute I landed here at this hotel more like a guest ranch by the
- 4:25seashore. Beautiful modern cottages set around the big green lawn with a swimming pool
- 4:30and the center big enough for the Olympics car ports Beside the cottages loaded with
- 4:34El Dorado's cotton netals and a handful of foreign sports jobs, and a beautiful
- 4:41big dining room and a building set up to look like an old clipper ship,
- 4:44and food and service worthy of Oscar of the Waldorf. And what was
- 4:47I doing here on expense account? Remember? He had spotted Vanni the night
- 4:53I arrived from San Diego after clearing up the Jolly Roger matter, and set
- 4:57my sights for immediately. Naturally, I wondered, what's so attractive a girl
- 5:00was doing alone here? She cleared that up for me at dinner the second
- 5:04night. I still don't understand why Daddy hasn't arrived yet. Oh, he's
- 5:10supposed to join you on this vacation. We always spend our vacations together,
- 5:15at least we have since mother died a few years ago. You're an only
- 5:17child, yes, really a foster child. Just as we were about to
- 5:23take our plane, some crisis or rather a rose at the plant. We
- 5:27made me come along and wait for him. Lamar metal products, Lama and
- 5:30Oh yeah, yeah, aircraft components, isn't it South Bend, Indiana?
- 5:34Yes, you know how crisis can arrive in a business like that. Sure,
- 5:39imagine seven dorders, you all that sort of thing. Yeah, well
- 5:43you'll probably hear from him before. Oh hey, waita, would you like
- 5:47to get us a telegram for the lady? Oh? Excuse me, Johnny?
- 5:53Sure? Here you glad you for you? Oh dear, it's from
- 6:00my father, and I don't like it. Listen, musty lay departure a
- 6:04few more days, doctor's orders. Nothing to worry about. Stay there in
- 6:09La Joy until I join you. Love daddy. Oh that's too bad,
- 6:13But doctor's orders. There's nothing wrong with daddy. He had a new insurance
- 6:16examination just a month ago. They gave him a clean bill of health.
- 6:20Uh what company Try Mutual something or other? But what difference does it make?
- 6:28There's something wrong about this, I'm sure of it. Well, why
- 6:30don't you phone him? Yes, yes I will. My cottage is right
- 6:34next door here. Come on. It was none of my business, but
- 6:42the name of Try Mutual rang an Olpha Media Bellyeah. I'd handle a lot
- 6:46of cases from them anyway. She wasted no time in putting through a call
- 6:49to her father's private number in South Bend. Yes, operator, thank you.
- 6:57I don't know why I didn't go to my own cottage to make this
- 6:59call my pleasure. I guess I'm a bit upset by this wire. I
- 7:02don't blame you. There's nothing wrong with Daddy. There can't be. Oh,
- 7:06maybe just made the mistake of mixing too many oysters with too many Martina.
- 7:11Hello, Daddy, what's this telegram you sent me? Oh? Oh,
- 7:20I see. Will you had me scared for a few minutes? Oh?
- 7:27Yes, fine, mm hmmm. Yes, if you must know the
- 7:34truth, I have Johnny Darling, very cheerful girl. Oh. He says
- 7:43he runs a filling station. But I don't believe him. I'll tell you
- 7:46all when you get here. In hurry, Darling, Please all right,
- 7:50Daddy, good night, dear, Thank goodness. You don't know how close
- 7:56your guest was. Johnny, it was just a slight case of indigestion,
- 8:00plus the fact he wanted another day at the plant. Well good, then
- 8:03let's go back to the dining room and see what kind of indigestion we can
- 8:05accumulate. Well that's started it. Three days and nights of as much fun
- 8:15and relaxation as I've had in years, a wonderful place to stay, a
- 8:20private beach that I'll wager a second, and not on the Pacific coast,
- 8:24swimming water, skiing, skin diving, sailing, everything. Oh this was
- 8:28it, or so I thought, Oh, why make any bones about it?
- 8:33I'm a sucker for romance, and believe me, it wasn't hard to
- 8:37be serious with Bonnie. Johnny. Yeah, this is nice, isn't it.
- 8:48I I don't believe in love at first sight? Do you? Uh?
- 8:58No, no, I, but it is nice, isn't it?
- 9:05Who gown? That'd be much too easy to fall in love with you,
- 9:09Bonnie? And I mean the forever kind? Would that be so terrible?
- 9:16You've You've got one big strike against you know, Johnny, what m O
- 9:22N E Y money you lose? I have nothing, step up. My
- 9:26father gives me, you know, allowance and for clothes and things, and
- 9:33you know, so you see, I'm just as poor as you are,
- 9:37Only you aren't you would be staying at a place like this. Another thing
- 9:41you know absolutely nothing about me. I know you don't make a living by
- 9:46running any old filling station. Johnny Dollar at the Sign of the Flying Red
- 9:48Horse oh, stop it. Well, for all you know, I'm a
- 9:52gangster, safecracker, juelsy. Well, we're still playboy sign of a wealthy
- 9:58family who never did a like a work in his life. In other words,
- 10:01are worthless, bomber. Don't say that, Johnny, even in fun.
- 10:05How'd you feel? A mom? Yes, and they're mothers, old
- 10:09dowagers trying to marry them off to another wealthy family. Add the name Lamar
- 10:15to their end of the social register listing. I'm sure the fortune with another
- 10:18fortune. I thought you said you were poor, you know what I mean?
- 10:24A bunch of worthless pops, that's all they are. I've seen better
- 10:28men among the servants and chauffeurs, a little Mexican boy who helps one of
- 10:31the gardeners, and the young businessmen there in South Bend, in in other
- 10:35cities, maybe earning just enough to make ends meet, but men ambitious,
- 10:43hard working, wanting to get somewhere on their own merit. And well,
- 10:48you know what I mean, why don't you marry one of them? Monny?
- 10:54Business easy? Is that? Johnny? You're not? And maybe I
- 10:58was waiting for someone like you to mm hmm. I still don't believe in
- 11:03love at first, such, let me snuggle again, like before we started
- 11:09this horrible discussion. Soun's going down our honey, this little mess in the
- 11:16rocks is going to get cold. Look, everybody else has left the beach.
- 11:22I like kiss me, and I thought I'd have to ask for it.
- 11:33Johnny, what do you do? M Well, I'll tell you.
- 11:45I live and hard for this. I told you. Listen, he's calling
- 11:50you. Yeah, you too, the spoil sport. Well, maybe it's
- 11:54word for your dad. Have you come? Oh? I hope, so
- 11:58come on, Johnny Pedro Pedro over here? Here we are here? What's
- 12:05up? Senor? Telegrams? Telegrams? But they went for the Sennor was
- 12:11Mike rush? So I rush? Oh boy? Pedro here? No,
- 12:16I'll tell you when we get back to the motel. Stop by my cottage.
- 12:20What's wrong, Bunny? It's from my family. Doctor. I'm afraid
- 12:26here you read it? Sure, men, regret having to inform you your
- 12:33father died a few hours ago. Suggest you returned to South Bend immediately.
- 12:41Oh. It was a few minutes before Bonnie could pull herself together enough to
- 12:52walk from the beach up to her cottage, where she could pack her things
- 12:56for the trip back to South Bend. I told her I'd make the nests
- 13:00Harry plane reservations for her. But what I didn't tell her was the contents
- 13:03of the wire i'd received the one mark rush. It was from Pat McCrackan
- 13:07at Universal Adjustment Bureau, a request to call him at his home in Hartford.
- 13:11Immediately I put through the call. Hello Pat McCracken, Well kill Joey.
- 13:16What's on your mind? Johnny? That's right, you got my wire?
- 13:18Why else do you think I'm calling? I tried to get you long
- 13:22distance all day. Your motel didn't seem to know where you were. Well,
- 13:24that was my doing. They might have spoiled a beautiful romance. Well,
- 13:28what's on your mind, Johnny? You've got to cut your vacation shot.
- 13:31Oh no, you don't, and you've got to come back to Hartford
- 13:33right away. What I listen, I'm dead, but planned to make a
- 13:37long stop over in South Bend, Indiana. South Bends, right, Oh,
- 13:41I get it. This is a gang or did you know? I'd
- 13:43figured maybe on stopping over there anyhow, I don't know what you're talking about,
- 13:48but now listen, By a rare stroke of luck, we just got
- 13:50word of the death this morning of one of Trimutual's bigger policy holders. How
- 13:54much million and a half, a man named Thomas Renee Lamar Lamar. Pat
- 14:00Listen, Johnny. The circumstances lead us to think it may be murdered,
- 14:20Johnny Dellar, I have your party in Hertford, Connecticut. Now, mister
- 14:24Dollar, Oh thanks, just please, Hello McCracken, Universal Adjustment Bureau,
- 14:31Hi, Pat, Johnny, are you still in Lahoy? Didn't you get
- 14:33my telegram? Sure did? And I'm getting ready to leave for South Bend
- 14:37right now, and the company of a beautiful, charming, lovely look son.
- 14:41Your vacation is over, charming lovely girl named Bonnie Lamar. Okay,
- 14:45okay, now, will you what that's right? Thomas Rene Lamar's daughter?
- 14:50Does she know her father has died? Telegram for her arrived at the same
- 14:52time I received yours. You didn't show her my wife? No, she
- 14:56doesn't know yet that you think it might be murder. Expense account submitted by
- 15:07Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the Universal Adjustment Bureau, Hartford, Connecticut. Attention,
- 15:11mister Patrick McCracken. Following is an accounting of expendit yours during my investigation
- 15:16of the Lamar matter, or was it murder expense account? Out of one?
- 15:26I'm calling it out of one, Pat, because it's really the first
- 15:28tab on the Lamar case. Previous expenses here in La Hooyer were charged against
- 15:31the Jolly Roger case. Expenses for the vacation you promised me, and am
- 15:35now so rudely interrupted. I hadnt won nine dollars sixty cents for that long
- 15:41distance call to Pat McCracken in Hartford one under the Senate? Is Monnie Lamar
- 15:45doing in La joya vacation same as I was trying to take? Now tell
- 15:48me something, Pat has a claim already been filed on Lamar's million and a
- 15:52half dollar policy filed. Well, how do you know about his death?
- 15:56So quickly? Block Pure and Simple Insurance Company is tri Mutual, big office
- 16:02in Chicago, headed up by Lawrence Comstock. Oh sure, not him for
- 16:04years, good man. Well he's written all of Lamar's policies himself. He
- 16:07got to know the old man pretty well. Uh huh. Personal friends,
- 16:11you know, weekend golf together, same clubs, and both nuts about two
- 16:15handed pekockle. So comes doctor Ben Lamar's house guest, the past few days
- 16:21and been with him practically every minute. The old man wasn't that his planned?
- 16:25Was he actually there when Lamar died? Yes? Yes, he was
- 16:27on to call the doctor, and the old man keeled over. Look,
- 16:30you keep referring to him as the old man. Just how old was he?
- 16:33Oh? Not too? Let me see, I've got it. He
- 16:37was fifty nine. The doctor's name on our telegram was Wilson. You know
- 16:41his first name? No, I don't know that stuff. He will have
- 16:45to get from Comstock to in South ben Okay at any rate, Johnny.
- 16:48He called me a minute. The doctor pronounced Lamar dead and specifically asked the
- 16:52ju'll be put on the case. Yeah, well that's flattering. Okay,
- 16:56it looks like I am. But tell me something. Yeah, what makes
- 16:59Larry think that man was murdered? I'd rather not discuss it now. He'll
- 17:03give it to you when you see him. Our playing leaves in about an
- 17:06hour. No doubt you can be of some comfort to the daughter m her
- 17:10knowing that you're handling the case. Pat, that's the one thing I don't
- 17:12want it at all. I hung up, leaving Pat to ponder over that
- 17:19last remark. Wirre Larry Comstock that I was coming and finished my packing for
- 17:23the trip back east. When I finished, I paid my bill at the
- 17:27fancy motel, and all I can say is thank goodness. It was on
- 17:30expense account. And I knocked on the door of the cottage next to my
- 17:36Yes, come in, Oh, Johnny, Hi Ronnie. Anyway I can
- 17:41help you more than you have. You've been wonderful arranging the flight back for
- 17:48me, for us, taking care of the things here, Johnny, that's
- 17:52right for us. I'm making the trip with you. But you I thought
- 17:56you said Hartford, Connecticut and your vacation. Oh, the vacation. It's
- 18:00all over. It wouldn't be any fun for me to stay around after this.
- 18:03Oh, and South Bend is along the way. I'd feel better if
- 18:08I kind of took your home rather than let you make the long trip alone.
- 18:11Under the circumstances, maybe I have some business. There's something to attend
- 18:17you there, Darling. I don't know what. Ezy, Okay, you
- 18:22made it so wonderful when Daddy couldn't get here these last few days, and
- 18:27now that this terrible thing has happened, stick by me this way. That's
- 18:32the only way I'd have it. You're so wonderful. Come on, now,
- 18:38come on, get your things together. I've called for a cab to
- 18:41the airport in San Diego. Come on. Oh, thank you, Johnny,
- 18:49I love you for this. Sure, I can't say I exactly relish
- 18:59thoughts of the Back East, much as I hoped I could be of some
- 19:02small comfort to the girl, much as I genuinely wanted to. Such things
- 19:07can be pretty rough, particularly in this instance. But I am an insurance
- 19:14investigator, and in a matter of this sort a million and a half dollars
- 19:18at stake, the possibility of murder. Well, it's up to me to
- 19:21suspect everyone, whether I like it or not. Yeah, I sometimes think
- 19:26it's a pretty rotten racket to be Johnny. Sleep, funny, sleep,
- 19:36You'll need all of it you can get before you have to face things at
- 19:40home. I wasn't sleepy. I was just thinking and being so thankful that
- 19:45you're here with me, honey. I wired ahead for a hotel reservation.
- 19:49What. Yeah, I'm going to stay in South Bend a few days.
- 19:53You wonderful? Wor No, I'm going to be honest with you. I
- 19:57also wired a friend of them mine, well, a fellow with whom I
- 20:02do business now and then so I well, anyhow, I'll be there for
- 20:07a few days and maybe more, and as long as I can be of
- 20:10any help to you. It's funny, you know you still haven't told me
- 20:15what you do. Well, don't worry about that now, but I'm curious.
- 20:19Tell me. It'll give us something to talk about. Did you wire
- 20:23anyone at your home about your arrival? Yes, Harrison, the butler,
- 20:27Johnny, Well, how about the doctor who telegraphed you? Is doctor Wilson
- 20:32too, Honey Wilson, Edward T. Wilson. Tell me, no,
- 20:37no, no, you you stop talking and try to get some rest at
- 20:41all. I'm going back to the lounge in the tail sections so that you'll
- 20:44have nothing to do but get some sleep. Then you won't tell me no
- 20:48tomorrow, I see, thank you, Johnny n can maybe rough, very
- 21:07rough. I felt like a trader to her. Well. We landed in
- 21:11Chicago at ten am and took a care from the airport to the Lamar home
- 21:15on the outskirts of South Bend. I never before realized that the big industrial
- 21:19city, with all its huge, dirty, sprawling factories, had such a
- 21:22wealthy residential section and the Lamar home on Parody Lane was one of the most
- 21:27impressive of all, set far back in what must have been an acre well
- 21:32kept one. In addition to Harris and the butler, we were met at
- 21:36the door by the housekeeper, cooked upstairs and downstairs, maids, and a
- 21:38couple of other servants, all of them obviously in deep sorrow over the passing
- 21:42of the master of the house. And may I most humbly for all of
- 21:48us express our deepest sympathy in this hour of this It's all thank you,
- 21:56Harrison, Thank you all. I'm going to my room and we'll call you
- 22:00when. Yes, miss, this is mister Dollar. Mister Dollar. He's
- 22:06to be admitted to the house anytime. He I'll be here, Funny,
- 22:11as soon as possible, and you know where to reach me. Yes,
- 22:15Johnny, thank you, and oh to get to work. Whether I liked
- 22:22it or not. I took the cab to the townhouse, dump my bags,
- 22:26then back to Chicago. In the office of Lawrence Comstock, trimutuals representative,
- 22:30he was waiting for me. Well, Johnny, you sure walk into
- 22:33something this time, thick one. Larry, you don't know, you don't
- 22:36know the half of it. A million and a half of it you gave
- 22:37Pat McCracken back in heart for the idea that Lamar's death might be murdered.
- 22:42I think it is. I really think it is, Johnny. Why Tom
- 22:45Lamar was one of the best friends I ever had. You should have been
- 22:48Your commission on the insurance he was caring was enough to set you up for
- 22:52life. Oh no, Johnny, don't talk like that. Tom was a
- 22:53good friend of mine, quite aside from business. I sold him his very
- 22:56first policy years ago, and he was just a book you prefer Atlas processing
- 23:00company, earning seventy dollars a week. And when he married Elise lace As
- 23:04his wife who died five years ago, that policy was only for twenty five
- 23:08hundred straight life. So where you know how little my commission was on that.
- 23:12But I liked him. I saw that they had a spark about him
- 23:15that with a proper kind of encouragement he could go places. And he did.
- 23:19Yeah, so I understand. I understand that Lamar Metal Products is a
- 23:22really big thing. General Metal Fabricators just bought them out, Yes, And
- 23:26Tom was getting all ready to retire spend the rest of his days having fun,
- 23:32golf, fishing, winters in California, summers in Minnesota, that sort
- 23:34of thing, and taking care of Vonnie his adopted daughter. Yeah, kind
- 23:41of worth taking care of two. Eh. I know our Larry met her
- 23:47in La Joya, California. Oh, then he brought her back here to
- 23:49face the sad fact of her father's death. Why didn't Oh yes, of
- 23:55course, the family doctor, ed Wilson. I should have realized. He
- 23:59sent a telegram to Vannie to the same place you were in La Joya.
- 24:03She's a wonderful girl, John, you're telling me, But Larry, is
- 24:10something you told Pat McCracken back in Hartford has led him to think that possibly
- 24:14Thomas Lamar was murdered John Johnny in the years I've known Tom Lamar, Yeah,
- 24:21I've not only known him, but I've known his family well, and
- 24:25much of his affairs, personal as well as business. Well, his wife
- 24:29Delise, I would have married her long ago if I'd been able to get
- 24:32to the point, Larry, Oh, yes, of course. And his
- 24:34daughter, Levonne Vonnie. I wish she'd been my daughter, my child.
- 24:40Come on, Larry, come on, get a She's a wonderful girl.
- 24:42You said that. Oh, yes, of course. Well, there were
- 24:45things in her past, Vonnie's past that even her mother and later her father
- 24:49didn't know about. But I did for Heaven's sake. Man, get to
- 24:52the point, you too, Yes, me too, Yeah, me the
- 25:00confirmed bachelor. Take him a leave, have fun for again, and make
- 25:03a big come on Murray. Listen, Johnny, I listen carefully, Doctor
- 25:10E. T. Wilson. Ed Wilson an old friend of mine as well
- 25:14as Tom. Yes, it was Ed who made the last insurance examination four
- 25:18months ago. Thomas Renee Lamar was in better health than you are. After
- 25:22all, he was only fifty nine, and he'd lived a careful life,
- 25:25taking good care of himself. On We were sure of his physical condition,
- 25:29sure of it. That's why I let him add to his already large policy.
- 25:33Larry, you've told Pat McCracken, and you've admitted to me that you
- 25:37think Thomas Lamar was murdered. Yes, John, because of one man who
- 25:41the one man who shared his confidences business in person, who was closer to
- 25:45him than even Ed Wilson or me. Well, one man who alone could
- 25:49be sure of benefiting by Tom Lamar's death. All Look, Larry, that
- 25:55bush you're beating around is getting bigger. And bigger, so simple, John
- 25:56so discouragingly simple. All right, all right, Larry, all right,
- 26:00taking anyway you like. I'm here for two reasons, because I'm a sign
- 26:04of this case and because of Vonnie. Yes, I know now who is
- 26:11it? You suspect the man Vonnie is really in love with. Oh,
- 26:22I'm sorry, Johnny. Now here's our star to tell you about tomorrow's intriguing
- 26:42episode of this week's story. Tomorrow some stuff I didn't want to hear,
- 26:47but I had to join us, won't you? Yours Truley Johnny Dollar.
- 27:10Yours Truly Johnny Dollar is starring Bob Bailey, is transcribed in Hollywood. It
- 27:15is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone, who also wrote tonight's story. Be
- 27:19sure to join us tomorrow night, same time in station for the next exciting
- 27:22episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. Roy Rowan speaking welcome back, Well,
- 28:29a pretty bad blow for a hero, particularly since he doesn't believe in love
- 28:38at first sight. Uh, you know, a way somewhat ironic because he'd
- 28:48been kind of sitting there and warning her about you. I could buy anything.
- 28:59Uh. The one thing I found myself somewhat curious about listening to this
- 29:03was well, why didn't he why was he high in the fact he was
- 29:07insurance investigator. My conclusion, and maybe other listeners have a suggestion, is
- 29:15that it's kind of like being police officer. If you mentioned, oh yeah,
- 29:21I'm an investigator or an auditor, that might be a bit of a
- 29:26kill joy in terms of mood an atmosphere. So that might be a reason
- 29:33as well. We'll have to see how this works out for Johnny. A
- 29:40tough break. I have to say a shame on Pat McCracken for calling him
- 29:44back after a week. You know, I got it with the with the
- 29:51Jolly Roger fraud matter. They provided some pretty good justification for why Johnny needed
- 29:57to be down there. They He really did not with this one, so
- 30:04so disappointed in that, but we wouldn't have a story otherwise. All right,
- 30:10Well, now it's time for some listener comments and feedback, and we
- 30:14had a couple of people post things over on our Facebook wall. One posted
- 30:21a one posted an article from WordPress called Requiem for Bob Bailey from two thousand
- 30:32and four talking about his career in his life. That's pretty important in two
- 30:41thousand and thirteen because that's the one hundredth anniversary of Bob Bailey's birth. The
- 30:48only thing I have with this article. There are a few minor issues in
- 30:53accuracies in there, or I guess thought issue would would be too harsh,
- 31:03But it begins with who grees for Bob Bailey? You know, I think,
- 31:08uh my, my general thought is that the career of Bob Bailey should
- 31:11definitely I guess the best thing I can come up with is celebrated, uh,
- 31:18particularly in this this one hundred year He left behind such a wonderful body
- 31:23of work for listeners and fans to uh enjoy and uh, you know,
- 31:32there's so much you know, good and right about it. There were some
- 31:37there were things that went horribly wrong in his life, uh you know,
- 31:41really slided by the television industry and not given a real chance to chance because
- 31:51of looks, and he just was not able to make it in the post
- 31:57radio world and his own personal world collapse. Others were able to make it,
- 32:05even William Conrad, who was denied the role of Matt Dillon, was
- 32:08able to make it. But sadly Bob Bailey wasn't. Went through a lot
- 32:13of down hard times, elienation from his family for many years, hit the
- 32:20ball really hard and then became a substance abuse counselor towards the ends of his
- 32:25life, before finally having to go into a nursing home. You know,
- 32:31so a tragic end, and it's not as remembered as he should be.
- 32:37But I think that this, you know, I think that was said and
- 32:42tragic. But what I'm so grateful for is that we have so much to
- 32:46enjoy that he's left behind. There is a sense of grieving in a sense,
- 32:52in a way, in the same sense that I guess in one way,
- 32:57I do grate for Bob Bailey in the sense that I also agree for
- 33:01people like Jimmy Duranty and Luke Costello and Virginia Gray. Write about this a
- 33:07little bit in my ebook What made the Golden Age Shine. But they were
- 33:12a different type of actor. They weren't the big celebrity, you know,
- 33:19incredibly removed from everyday life. You know, they knew what existed, you
- 33:25know, what a challenge of distance could be it. Sometimes they weren't the
- 33:30ultra rich and ultra glamourus covered constantly by paparazzi. In fact, many of
- 33:36the people in radio UH liked radio because it allowed them to be relatively anonymous.
- 33:46You know, you could do your voice on radio, particularly if your
- 33:51women, and just go home and take care of your family. And people
- 33:54thought it was wonderful and I think that I think that it really really was
- 34:07in an amazing time, and we have people who lack that humility and humanity.
- 34:15I think that made the Golden Age so unique. But anyway, was
- 34:20it well And people do do that, And I'm okay with people articles and
- 34:24cool links and links to stuff on the BBC. Only thing I ever really
- 34:30bother at on the Facebook page is people promoting, you know, themselves and
- 34:35their own websites. That's just not that's just not cool. But article stuff,
- 34:43absolutely, and thanks so much to everybody posting and sharing there. And
- 34:47I think I have one more comment. Chris writes in, Hey Adam,
- 34:53thanks for doing what you do by far the best old time radio podcast out
- 34:57there, and Diane's as I am new to your program and love it well.
- 35:02Thanks so much, Diane, and thanks so much for all your support
- 35:07and comments. That will actually do it for today. Oh one other one
- 35:13one listener was having problems on iTunes with downloading a particular episode. Nothing wrong
- 35:19with the particular episode just iTunes performance issues. If you ever have an episode,
- 35:30let's say, let's just say, for example, was this episode Obviously
- 35:32it's not, because you're listening to this is episode one fifty nine, So
- 35:38what's you There's a search box right across the top of Great Detectives dot net,
- 35:45So just put EP one zero five nine and the Apple will come up
- 35:51in the search fairly quickly, and you can download it directly off the side.
- 35:55If you're not able to do that, then you may have additional problem
- 35:58and email me and we'll see what there is. Okay, well, that
- 36:02will do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow with the amazing mister Malone
- 36:07and join us on Wednesday as the Lamar matter continues
