- 0:03news from in and around Ashland and Boyd County. Your
- 0:07reader today is Jane. We begin with the edition dated
- 0:12July twenty first, twenty twenty six. As a reminder, radioized

- 0:26Our first article joyful Occasion for Jack Savage, a World
- 0:32War II veteran, turns one hundred, by Allison Scott for
- 0:36the Daily Independent. While there may not have been one
- 0:40hundred candles, family and friends shared countless stories and memories
- 0:46during the World War II veterans one hundredth birthday party. Sunday,
- 0:52Jack Savage celebrated triple digits at the Trinity Station Retirement Community,
- 0:58surrounded by those whose life have been touched by his
- 1:01positivity and kindness as they thanked him for his service
- 1:06and a lifetime of love. It's hard to realize I'm
- 1:09a hundred. I can't believe it. I don't know how
- 1:13I'm supposed to feel or what I'm supposed to do,
- 1:16Jack Savage said to those around him, I'll do what
- 1:20I always pray to do. Just roll back, enjoy and relax.
- 1:26Sharing his father's name and nicknamed little Jack by his family,
- 1:31Jack Savage said, despite his father and many people during
- 1:35his era coming out of the Great Depression quickly followed
- 1:38by World War II, his father's outlook on life never faltered.
- 1:44They're just to cut out of a different cloth. But
- 1:47for him specifically, the thing that I've really watched over many,
- 1:51many years, he always just had a very positive outlook,
- 1:57said his son. Even when times got really hard with
- 2:00different things going on, he always just stayed forward and
- 2:05kept a positive attitude. According to his son, Savage arrived
- 2:10in Europe around the time Berlin fell and was assigned
- 2:14to a motor pool driving high ranking officers throughout Germany
- 2:18and Europe. He got to see a lot of Europe
- 2:21from that standpoint, but he was fortunate that he missed
- 2:25the combat side of it, said his son. Many people
- 2:28at his celebration thanked him for Savage's service and the
- 2:32many ways he impacted their lives, to which he told
- 2:35them it has been my privilege. Although his birthday was
- 2:40July thirteenth, his family celebrated six days later to allow
- 2:45his many friends and family to fly in and make
- 2:49it for this important milestone, which also happened to be
- 2:53his wedding anniversary. Savage's wife passed away in nineteen eighty six.
- 3:00Priest said that in the two years she has worked
- 3:03with the retirement community, Jack Savage's birthday parties have always
- 3:08had the largest turnout. His family and friends celebrated by
- 3:12looking at old photos and taking turns sharing their birthday
- 3:16wishes and memories. The Book of Proverbs teaches all about friendships,
- 3:22and you could not ask for a better friend than him.
- 3:25There's none better, said Steve Adams. I'm very grateful that
- 3:30for so much of my life I've had my grandpa
- 3:33be a part of that, and said his granddaughter Alexa,
- 3:38this man taught me how to play cards, and it
- 3:40just stuck with me. I love you, Grandpa, We remember it.
- 3:45Savage's son said that his father's advice to younger generations
- 3:49would be to keep his positive outlook and not allow
- 3:53the things out of your control to change that. It's
- 3:57just one big blessing to have him, said his son.
- 4:00I've got so many friends and other people that I
- 4:03know haven't had this kind of opportunity. Having him with
- 4:08us this long has been the greatest blessing. Next East
- 4:13Park Board addresses questions by Aaron Snyder of The Daily Independent.
- 4:19A few residents showed up to the July Northeast Kentucky
- 4:23Regional Industrial Authority Board meeting Monday to listen and ask
- 4:29questions regarding Tero Wolf's plan to construct and operate a
- 4:33one gigawat data center at East Park Industrial Park. The group,
- 4:39which is also referred to as the East Park Board,
- 4:42is still under a non disclosure agreement on some details,
- 4:46said board member Alan Gillum, but they were able to
- 4:50answer most questions pose during the two hour meeting. The
- 4:55board is comprised of Gillam, David Michael, Hunter Boyd, Marion Atkins,
- 5:02Joe Dillow, and Jeff Elswick. Don Yates is the board
- 5:06attorney each county of the five co region, Boyd, Greenup, Elliott, Lawrence,
- 5:13and Carter has an appointee with Greenop County and Boyd
- 5:17County on a rotation for the sixth spot. Michael is
- 5:21from Lawrence County, Gilham from Elliott, Boyd from Boyd, and
- 5:27Atkins from Carter. Dillo and Elswick are both from Greenup.
- 5:32Each member serves purely as a volunteer. The judge executive
- 5:37from each county makes the appointment, which must be approved
- 5:41by each county's commission. The Judges Executive, while welcome to
- 5:46attend meetings, do not serve on the East Park Board.
- 5:51The board is tasked to manage the industrial park. On Monday,
- 5:55Judges Executive Bobby Hall Greenup County, Philip Carterurrance County, and
- 6:00Myron Lewis from Elliott County were present. All three had
- 6:05to leave to attend to other business prior to a
- 6:08public comment portion, which was carved out especially for this
- 6:12meeting since they anticipated residents to appear as recorded in
- 6:18deeds in both Greena van Boyd Counties. The East Park
- 6:21Board approved a purchase of land that has been vacant
- 6:25for twenty eight years to Industrial Equity Partners, which orchestrated
- 6:30the acquisition for a company ultimately revealed as Tero Wolf.
- 6:36When East Park's board unanimously approved the acquisition, it was
- 6:40known that it would be a data center, but Towolf
- 6:44had not yet been revealed as the operator of the facility.
- 6:49Yates explaining covenants were put in place with I E. P.
- 6:53In the details of the acquisition. If covenants are not followed,
- 6:58Yates said legal action may be pursued. He was responding
- 7:03to a question by Russell resident Bren Martin. It's no
- 7:07different than with any other industrial property, Yates said. If
- 7:12there are environmental issues, state and federal entities would be involved.
- 7:17He said. Gillim said what he and the board didn't
- 7:21want was another decade of desolation. What we did not
- 7:26want is for somebody to buy the land and sit
- 7:28on it for ten years and do nothing. Gillam said.
- 7:33If the NDA hadn't been signed, he said the suitor
- 7:37would have zero interest in locating at the industrial park.
- 7:42Michael said there are always pros and cons with any
- 7:45potential project. Michael said some details of the project were
- 7:50openly discussed in the early months of twenty twenty six,
- 7:54but once the NDA was signed, we do not discuss
- 7:58the details of the pect. Those would be referred to
- 8:02Tara Wolfe, the manager of the project. If we decide
- 8:08to sell and they don't put a building there, we
- 8:11have the option of buying it back, just like with Brady,
- 8:15just like the aluminum plant that came from the state
- 8:19down Michael later added a Laura Henson, an Ashland resident
- 8:24and a professor at Ohio University Southern relate a few
- 8:28questions from concerned citizens, She said. Henson is a writing
- 8:33candidate for Boyd County Judge Executive. In November, Boyd clarified
- 8:39with Henson the Northeast Kentucky Economic Development Authority, the Northeast
- 8:45Kentucky Regional Industrial Authority, and five CO are all three
- 8:51separate entities. I know there's been a lot of confusion
- 8:55with people you've talked to, Boyd said. Henson said she
- 8:59is aware of that fact, and she has conveyed that
- 9:03to others. Ryan Hurst of South Shore asked if he
- 9:07would go to the Greeno County Clerk's office and search
- 9:11I E. P. Would he locate the deed? Yates affirmed
- 9:16the recorded deed is the same in Boyd and green
- 9:18Of Counties. Hurst asked who the custodian of open records
- 9:23request is for East Park's board. Yeates said he is,
- 9:28and he's responded to five so far. In other news,
- 9:32back to Butcher Halla One Woman Show Voice's Love of
- 9:37Loretta Lynn at Highland's Doseum by Tammy Hetzer Wolmack for
- 9:43The Daily Independent. Barnstormer Lisa Woods takes off her white
- 9:48cowboy hat as if to salute her heroine. Carefully tucked
- 9:52inside a glass box, glints the golden kitten heels of
- 9:56Miss Loretta Lynn, Queen mother of the US twenty three
- 10:00Country Music Highway. The Commonwealth actress alls at the autograph slipper,
- 10:07a piece Highlands Doseum is mighty proud of heralding Lynn,
- 10:11native Kentuckian singer, the big name of Blushing Butcher Hollow
- 10:18in Johnson County. Humbly arranging her calico frock Woods carries
- 10:24the attitudes and air of lynn unpretentious affectation for the
- 10:31Ashlanders gathering around to praise her performance. The Woodford County
- 10:36woman spent almost two years cultivating the character to at
- 10:42Woods performed the Doseum Show on July sixteenth to a
- 10:46packed audience at the July Installation of Kentucky Chattiquua, a
- 10:51performative glimpse of the people of Kentucky on this semi
- 10:56quincentennial celebration of America. Loretta Lynn Memories of a Coal
- 11:02Miner's Daughter is funded by Kentucky Humanities and National Endowment
- 11:06for the Humanities, paying a stop at the downtown Museum
- 11:10free of charge for Loretta Lynn Devods. Woods took patrons
- 11:15on a life journey of Lynn from the grub work
- 11:18of soot covered minework, her daddy understood daily grinds of
- 11:23young motherhood with four kids by age nineteen, all the
- 11:28way to the roadhouses, where she landed a record label,
- 11:32rocking her babies, vocalizing lullabies, inquire hymnal regulars, her Life's love,
- 11:38Dolittle Mooney, known to Loretta only as do I wanted
- 11:44to sing to my four kids. I didn't want nobody
- 11:47else to here. Woods stomped her cowgirl boot in true
- 11:52execution Eastern Kentucky accent, filling the salon. He said, next
- 11:58to Kitty Wells, I was the best singer in the country,
- 12:01he would know. Frequenting water holes and saloons all over
- 12:04the world in his soldier's stint, reveling on booze and
- 12:09starlet material, Dew set out to make his new bride
- 12:12a household name. They were a dedicated duo, heading out
- 12:16to every beer garden and watering holes on the West coast,
- 12:20where they took up housekeeping. Me and dou we were
- 12:24a team. She said, we were going to make something
- 12:27for our family. I threw the songbook down and started
- 12:30writing my own songs about family, love, marriage, the things
- 12:35I felt After earning five bucks nightly, they thought of
- 12:39riches were coming soon. She saw a young girl one
- 12:43night at her Bill's tavern gig. She noticed her blubbering
- 12:47into her Barley pop, soon spawning her song I'm a
- 12:52Honky talk Girl, winning buck Owens a Barqua Jamboree talent show.
- 12:58She gained attention from Norm Burley, who built the tiny
- 13:02label Zero Records wholly to sign Lynn Doo knocked on
- 13:07doors all over LA. We would sit inside radio stations
- 13:11three or four hours till they would play my song,
- 13:15said Wood, doubling as abudding Lynn. On the come up.
- 13:21We were sleeping in the car and we ate so
- 13:24many Bloonney sandwiches I thought I'd die hard. Work paid off,
- 13:28as Lynn charted fourteen on country radio. Before she knew it,
- 13:33she debuted the Grand Old Opry. That's when Doyle and
- 13:36Teddy Wilburn, the Wilburn Brothers, noticed her unique homespun talents,
- 13:42soon exclusively arranging her bookings and negotiating her publishing. Lynn
- 13:48stood on a Coca cola crate to reach the microphone
- 13:51on the earnest tub midnight chamboree broadcast across the radio
- 13:56waves and into Holmes. Patsy Klein heard Lynn while recuperating
- 14:01in the hospital from a head on car crash, with
- 14:04Lynn singing, I fall to pieces live in honor of Cleine.
- 14:10The next day, Lynn was invited to meet Klein in
- 14:13her hospital room. She befriended her and invited her over
- 14:17for dinner, even taught her how to choose the correct
- 14:20size pantyhose and apply makeup. She noticed I didn't shave
- 14:25my legs, so Patsy sat on the side of the
- 14:27bathtub with me and showed me how. That was one
- 14:31of the kindest, most sisterly things anyone ever did for me.
- 14:35I was new to music and had so much to learn,
- 14:38and I was treated as an equal by Patsy. Here
- 14:43Woods painted the toll the music industry took on her
- 14:46husband and kids. Success had made a failure. On March fifth,
- 14:52nineteen sixty three, Klein died in an airplane crash, and
- 14:56Lynn lost her best friend. She made it her mission
- 15:00to befriend other women breaking into country music, just as
- 15:04Patsy Klein did for her. Shortly, Lynn learned she was
- 15:09pregnant with twins, a mother of six contending with her
- 15:12spouse's infidelity and alcoholism. Her homegrown problems gave rise to
- 15:18the songs You Ain't Woman Enough and Don't Come Home
- 15:23a Drinken, which was banned on most radio stations but
- 15:27still went gold. Music has a kind of magic, said Woods,
- 15:32casting thought on the past successes of megastar Loretta Lynn,
- 15:36but Butcher Hollow will always be home. The leading woman
- 15:41never met Loretta Lin in life, but finds source of
- 15:44pride being chosen to bring living history to the role
- 15:48across the Bluegrass. Kentucky Humanities was here every step as
- 15:53I developed the character, she concluded, applause, rousing the arcade
- 15:58with a bow. They helped guide me and gave me
- 16:01feedback along the way. I'm just honored to share the
- 16:05life of Loretta Lynn with you. Next, Bashir appoints Adkins
- 16:11to State Fair Board by McKenna Horsley of the Kentucky Lantern.
- 16:16Democratic Governor Andy Basher appointed his former senior advisor, Rod
- 16:21Key Atkins to the Kentucky State Fairboard, which is embroiled
- 16:26in controversy after the governor gained control of the board
- 16:29following a recent Kentucky Supreme Court opinion. Atkins, who left
- 16:35Basher's administration earlier this month amid speculation that he will
- 16:39run for governor in twenty twenty seven, will replace Michael
- 16:44Berry on the board. The board, with new appointees from
- 16:48the governor, named Berry as interim president and CEO in
- 16:52early July, after removing David Beck from the position. In June,
- 16:59the Kentucky Supreme Court ruled a twenty twenty one law
- 17:03passed by the GOP controlled General Assembly that attempted to
- 17:08shift control of the State Fair Board from the governor,
- 17:11a Democrat, to the Agriculture Commissioner, who is now Republican
- 17:16Johnathan Schell, was unconstitutional. The court also set a twenty
- 17:22twenty two law giving other executive branch officials appointment power
- 17:27over the Executive branch Ethics Commission was unconstitutional. Republican constitutional
- 17:35officers are now asking the High Court to reconsider the case. Adkins,
- 17:41a former Kentucky Democratic House floor leader, will serve an
- 17:45unexpired term that ends June twenty eighth, twenty twenty nine.
- 17:50Though Adkins was not formally announced what his intentions are
- 17:55for twenty twenty seven, he will have an event at
- 17:58the Borough in Lecuying Tuesday afternoon to share my vision
- 18:04for our future and what's next. Lieutenant Governor Jacqueline Coleman,
- 18:08also a Democrat, launched her gubernatorial bid in April. So far,
- 18:14she is the only candidate to have formally announced her plan.
- 18:20In other news, SORE Summits set for October in Corbin.
- 18:24Staff report the twenty twenty six SORE Summit will return
- 18:29to Corbin October seventh through the ninth with a renewed

- 18:44news release, the summit is presented by Appalachian Wireless and
- 18:49the Appalachian Regional Commission. The theme this year is building
