- 0:33Thanks for listening. Good.
- 0:39Morning. Today's scripture is going to be
- 0:43from Luke chapter 1, verses 5 through 25, the birth of John
- 0:49the Baptist patrol. When Herod was king of Judea,
- 0:53there was a Jewish priest named Zechariah.
- 0:55He was a member of the priestly order of AB Jaya and his wife
- 0:59Elizabeth was also from the priestly line of Aaron.
- 1:03Zechariah and Elizabeth were righteous in God's eyes, careful
- 1:06to obey the laws, the Lord's commandments and regulations.
- 1:10They had no children because Elizabeth was unable to
- 1:13conceive, and they were both very old.
- 1:16One day Zechariah was serving God in the temple, for his order
- 1:20was on duty that week. As was the custom of the priest,
- 1:23he was chosen by lot to enter the sanctuary of the Lord and
- 1:27burn incense. While the incense was beginning
- 1:29to be burned, a great crowd stood outside praying.
- 1:33While Zechariah was in the sanctuary, an Angel of the Lord
- 1:36appeared to him, standing to the right of the incense altar.
- 1:39Zechariah was shaken and overwhelmed with fear when he
- 1:43saw him, but the Angel said, don't be afraid Zechariah, God
- 1:46has heard your prayer. Your wife Elizabeth will give
- 1:49you a son and you are to name him John.
- 1:52You will have great joy and gladness and many will rejoice
- 1:55at his birth, for he will be great in the eyes of the Lord.
- 1:58He must never touch wine or other alcoholic drink.
- 2:01He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before his birth and
- 2:06he will turn many Israelites to the Lord their God.
- 2:08He will be a man with spirit and power of Elijah.
- 2:11He will be prepare the people for the coming of the Lord.
- 2:14He will turn their hearts of the fathers to their children and he
- 2:17will cause those who are rebellious to accept the wisdom
- 2:20of the gods. Zechariah said to the Angel.
- 2:23How can I be sure this will happen?
- 2:25I'm an old man now and my wife is also alone in years.
- 2:28Then the Angel said, I am Gabriel, I stand in the very
- 2:32presence of God. It was he who sent me to bring
- 2:35you this good news. But now, since you didn't
- 2:37believe what I said, you'll be silent and unable to speak until
- 2:40the child is born, for my words will clearly be fulfilled in the
- 2:44proper time. Meanwhile, the people were
- 2:46waiting for Zechariah to come out of the sanctuary, wondering
- 2:49why he was taking so long. When he finally did come out, he
- 2:52couldn't speak to them. Then they realized from his
- 2:55gestures and his silence that he must have seen a vision in the
- 2:57sanctuary. When Zechariah's week of service
- 3:00in the temple was over, he returned home.
- 3:02Soon afterward, his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and
- 3:05went into seclusion for five months.
- 3:07How kind the Lord is, she exclaimed.
- 3:09He has taken away my disgrace of having no children.
- 3:13This is the word of God for the people of God.
- 3:15Thanks be to. God, thanks be to God.
- 3:18There's a song on an album that we love to listen to in our
- 3:23house during the Advent season. The album is called Waiting
- 3:28Songs by Rain for Roots. And the song I have in mind this
- 3:32morning is called Every Valley. It even came on yesterday as I
- 3:36was finalizing some work on my sermon.
- 3:40And it talks about how hard it is to wait, how hard it is to
- 3:46wait. So listen, Listen to these
- 3:48lyrics from the verses it says when you write a letter to a
- 3:52friend and you don't know when you'll hear back again, it's
- 3:58hard to wait. It's hard to wait so hard to
- 4:04wait when the one you love leaves on a plane and you know
- 4:10that she'll come back someday. It's hard to wait.
- 4:16So hard to wait when you plant a seed in the garden bed but you
- 4:23don't see green growing up just yet.
- 4:28It's hard to wait, so hard to wait.
- 4:33I think those lyrics get it right, right?
- 4:37While those examples may not be the hardest situations in life
- 4:42to wait through, they capture the idea well.
- 4:46We don't like waiting and these days we've been conditioned not
- 4:52to wait, right? We we press a button on the
- 4:55Keurig and 60 seconds later we have a cup of coffee.
- 4:58We order something on Amazon and it's on our doorstep. 2 days
- 5:02later we send a text message, right?
- 5:05And we get a little notification that's been delivered then that
- 5:08it's been read and then those little dots are blinking and and
- 5:11we know the other person is writing back.
- 5:16We aren't used to waiting, and when we aren't comfortable in
- 5:22the waiting, it can be difficult to cultivate something like
- 5:27hope, or waiting and hope that they go hand in hand.
- 5:34Because who has ever hoped for something that arrived
- 5:38instantaneously, right? We don't hope for things we
- 5:43already have, we hope for those things which are not.
- 5:48Yet without the time between what is and what could be,
- 5:54there's no building of anticipation and and therefore
- 5:57no reason to exercise hope. Now it may seem funny to phrase
- 6:05it that way because we often think of hope as a feeling, but
- 6:12I don't think that hope is primarily something we feel.
- 6:17I think hope is something we practice, it's something we
- 6:21exercise. It's an act of our will to hope
- 6:27for something, something we choose to do.
- 6:32Now, if you look up hope in a dictionary, and by that I mean
- 6:36if you Google the definition of hope, you will certainly find
- 6:41definitions that call hope a feeling, right?
- 6:46Yeah, it's a feeling that blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 6:48But but just because a word is used in certain ways in the
- 6:52modern world and and a dictionary, right, is simply a
- 6:56reference of the ways that words are being used, not necessarily
- 7:02a reflection of how they should be used.
- 7:05So, so just because a dictionary may begin by defining hope as a
- 7:12feeling, that doesn't mean that's what hope meant in the
- 7:17minds of the authors of the Bible, right?
- 7:20So I want you to hear a bit of what the Bible has to say about
- 7:25hope. For instance, in Isaiah 4031
- 7:29says, but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength
- 7:34or Psalm 25, lead me by your truth and teach me for you are
- 7:39the God who saves me all day long.
- 7:41I put my hope in you and we can choose where we place our hope
- 7:50versus like first Corinthians 1313.
- 7:52It says three things will last forever.
- 7:55Faith, hope and love. Hope is key, but again, not
- 8:03primarily a feeling. Romans 418 says even when there
- 8:09was no reason for hope, Abraham kept hoping, believing that he
- 8:16would become the father of many nations.
- 8:18Hope goes beyond our human perceptions or even our
- 8:23imagination sometimes. Hebrews 10/23 says let us hold
- 8:28on, Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm.
- 8:33For God can be trusted to keep his promise.
- 8:38That's adding a little more, right?
- 8:39Hope is closely connected to the idea of trust.
- 8:43We can hope in God because we trust in God.
- 8:50Romans 824 and 25 says we were given this hope when we were
- 8:56saved. If we already have something, we
- 8:58don't need to hope for it. But if we look forward to
- 9:01something we don't yet have, we must wait patiently and
- 9:06confidently, right? Here's that I that idea that we
- 9:11don't hope for something that we already have.
- 9:13We look forward in hope to what we don't yet have.
- 9:19And Paul says to the Romans with patience and confidence.
- 9:23I wish that was the way I waited more often, right, With patience
- 9:27and confidence. But that that brings us here to
- 9:30this story of Zechariah and Elizabeth, which is told in the
- 9:36passage that Rebecca read for us this morning from Luke chapter
- 9:401. Let's let's take a look at this
- 9:41story and see how it can shape our understanding of hope.
- 9:48All right, so in verses 5 to 7, right, that introductory part,
- 9:51it serves as an introduction to the story.
- 9:53These verses are setting the stage and introducing the main
- 9:58characters, right? So we're given the time frame in
- 10:02which this happened while Herod was king of Judah.
- 10:06And we're told who this story is all about, right?
- 10:11It's about this guy named Zechariah and his wife
- 10:15Elizabeth, and it's noted that they're both from priestly
- 10:18families, priestly lineages. Luke goes out of his way here to
- 10:24tell us that both Zechariah and Elizabeth are righteous in God's
- 10:30eyes. Careful to obey all the Lord's
- 10:34commandments and regulations. That's that's not a bad way to
- 10:37be described, right, Especially in Scripture.
- 10:41Righteous in God's eyes. Imagine if when someone was
- 10:47asked about you, that was how they described you.
- 10:52Oh, Scott and Meg. Yeah, yeah.
- 10:54They're they're righteous in God's sight, all right?
- 10:57They're careful to obey all the Lord's commandments and
- 11:00regulations. You could do a lot worse for
- 11:02your tombstone, right? Besides, besides hearing that
- 11:08Zechariah is in the priestly line, the first thing we're told
- 11:11about him is that he's righteous, right?
- 11:15And I think that's important because the very next thing that
- 11:19we're told is that even though they're old, they don't have any
- 11:25kids. They haven't had any kids
- 11:28because Elizabeth is unable to conceive right now.
- 11:34This was long before the era of fertility specialist and in
- 11:38vitro fertilization and all those kind of things.
- 11:41And the problem was almost always blamed on the woman,
- 11:46right, whose main role in those days was to produce sons to
- 11:50carry for carry forward the the family line, right?
- 11:55So that description of being barren or unable to conceive
- 12:00that that would have been a badge of shame for Elizabeth, a
- 12:04source of suffering and disappointment for both of them.
- 12:11I think it's important to note that both Zechariah and
- 12:15Elizabeth, their godliness and their faithfulness to God, it
- 12:21didn't protect them from suffering from deep
- 12:26disappointment. Being righteous in God's eyes
- 12:30didn't guarantee them a life of blessing that looked like
- 12:35everything they would have wanted and hoped for.
- 12:41It's not how it works. I know when we stop and think
- 12:46about it, we know that to be true.
- 12:48But I also think a lot of time we live as if it is true, right?
- 12:53And our emotions respond as if that were true.
- 12:58But our faithfulness to God doesn't spare us from sorrow or
- 13:05disappointment or suffering or waiting.
- 13:11Now, I don't know if Elizabeth or Zechariah were still hoping
- 13:17at that point in life that God would give them a child, or if
- 13:24they'd somehow come to some level of either acceptance or
- 13:28resignation that it just wasn't going to happen.
- 13:35But either way, they were living in the midst of these unmet
- 13:39longings, right? Even as they continue to live
- 13:42out their day-to-day lives. And so in verses 8 to 10, we're
- 13:47told how one day as Zechariah was serving his time in the
- 13:51temple, as Zechariah would have done as part of a rotation of
- 13:55priests and Levites. Well, on this certain day, it
- 13:59was Zechariah who drew the long straw, right?
- 14:03Which meant it was his turn to go into the sanctuary and burn
- 14:06the altar or burn the incense on the altar, just like it had been
- 14:11someone else's turn the day before, and the day before that,
- 14:15and the day before that. And while the priest was inside
- 14:20burning the incense, a crowd stood outside the sanctuary.
- 14:25They were offering their prayers up to God.
- 14:28That incense was a a sign and a symbol of their prayers rising
- 14:35up to God like a sweet sacrifice.
- 14:41But that's where things took a turn away from the normal right
- 14:47and, and, and made that day different from all the days that
- 14:50had come before. Because that day, while
- 14:55Zechariah was in the sanctuary, an Angel of the Lord appeared to
- 15:00him. And that Angel proceeds to tell
- 15:02Zechariah that his wife, Elizabeth is going to conceive a
- 15:07son who is to be named John. Now John is going to be special,
- 15:12The Angel tells him. He's going to be set apart for a
- 15:15special role in the grand story of salvation that God was
- 15:20writing. And because of that special
- 15:23role, he had to be set apart in other ways too.
- 15:28The Angel tells Zechariah that John is going to be like Elijah,
- 15:33the great prophet of Israel. And through him, many in Israel
- 15:39would turn their hearts to the Lord again.
- 15:45And poor terrified Zechariah, right?
- 15:49He, he just can't quite believe it.
- 15:51He's, he's trying to wrap his mind around at this longing that
- 15:56had been unmet for so many years, this news that he had
- 16:01yearned to hear for decades, this hope that he had all but
- 16:07given up after a lifetime of disappointment.
- 16:11This becomes the very place that God encounters Zechariah.
- 16:19This is where God meets him, right?
- 16:24Because there's something about longing and hope that creates
- 16:29space for God to meet us personally, right where we can
- 16:34encounter not just the meeting of our hopes and dreams or the
- 16:39satisfaction of our longings, but the very One who is hope
- 16:45himself. In our months and years and
- 16:51decades of waiting, our vision, our vision can be refocused from
- 16:59the gift that we're seeking, the thing that we're longing for, to
- 17:02the very giver of every good gift.
- 17:06It's in our hoping and it's in our waiting that God is working
- 17:11to transform us, to refine us and purify us and reshape us.
- 17:19And Zechariah and his disbelief at what he's being told, he
- 17:23says, are Are you sure? Are you sure?
- 17:28I'm I'm really quite an old man now.
- 17:31And my wife, she's she's not quite a spring chicken either.
- 17:36How can we be sure? How can we be sure?
- 17:43And Gabriel, that's that's the name of this particular Angel,
- 17:47by the way, Gabriel says, fine, you want to sign?
- 17:51You don't believe my words, You're not going to be able to
- 17:54speak either until after this baby is born.
- 18:02Meanwhile, back at the ranch, or at least outside the sanctuary,
- 18:08the people are beginning to realize that Zechariah has been
- 18:13in there for quite a long time. The prayer meeting had gone into
- 18:19overtime and, and honestly, they were probably beginning to
- 18:24wonder if the old man had died. Zechariah wasn't dead.
- 18:31And when he comes out of the sanctuary unable to talk,
- 18:36remember, or he eventually gets them to understand that he's had
- 18:40a vision, an encounter with God, and.
- 18:43And at the end of the week, after fulfilling his
- 18:46responsibilities of service at the temple, Zechariah heads home
- 18:51to Elizabeth, still unable to talk and communicate, even with
- 18:58his wife, what he'd experienced there in the temple.
- 19:02But he was he was filled with a New Hope and, and I'm sure eager
- 19:06to play his part in the story. Elizabeth probably thought he
- 19:12had lost his mind. But soon afterward, she becomes
- 19:18pregnant, and she's overwhelmed by the kindness of God in
- 19:23removing this disgrace from her. Even though it didn't look like
- 19:28the way she had envisioned it on her wedding night or in the many
- 19:32years since that day, God was answering their prayers and
- 19:39fulfilling their longings in ways they never would have
- 19:43imagined or expected. And if you know anything about
- 19:48the story of John the Baptist, that's who their son John would
- 19:52become. You can check out my Advent
- 19:55sermon series from a couple years ago to to hear more about
- 19:58him. But but I'm sure his life didn't
- 20:02fit the expectations they had for their son either, any more
- 20:08than his conception and birth did.
- 20:10John was kind of weird. Right.
- 20:14He he lived in the desert. He wore this scratchy camel hair
- 20:19cloak. He ate a diet of locust and
- 20:23honey. Maybe that's the next church
- 20:26fast. We should do locust and honey.
- 20:33John didn't serve in the temple like his dear old dad Zechariah
- 20:38did. Instead, he was out in the
- 20:41wilderness preaching repentance. He was baptizing people in the
- 20:45Jordan River. Not exactly the most upwardly
- 20:50mobile life choices you could have made in his day.
- 20:55And ultimately, John would be be headed for speaking truth to
- 21:00power, for calling out sin and seeking to hold the King
- 21:05accountable. Not, I'm sure, what Zechariah
- 21:12and Elizabeth envisioned when they were falling asleep,
- 21:17marveling at God's goodness to them and the growing baby in
- 21:22Elizabeth's womb. Even as God fulfilled their
- 21:28hopes, there were costs and challenges that they could have
- 21:32never foreseen. And the same can be true for us.
- 21:40And I don't know what your relationship is with hope these
- 21:46days. I'm sure there is some who are
- 21:50here today who have all but given up on hopes that you
- 21:54carried for years and maybe even decades, longings that remain
- 22:01unmet despite your prayers and tears and pleadings.
- 22:09I'm sure there are others who are here today who are clinging
- 22:13to hope, holding tightly to that hope because you feel like
- 22:18there's nothing else left to hold on to.
- 22:23There's still others of you here who are young enough that while
- 22:28you may have had to face disappointments, the majority of
- 22:32your life lays before you full of hopes and possibilities.
- 22:39And I believe that there are yet others of you here for whom hope
- 22:45might even seem like a dirty word, something not to be spoken
- 22:50of, something that died a long time ago.
- 22:56Allow me to remind each and everyone of you that hope is not
- 23:02simply a feeling of potential and possibility.
- 23:07Hope is not something unfounded, nor is it just wishful thinking.
- 23:13Hope is a person, but not just a person.
- 23:18Hope is the God who came to us, the God who came for us, the God
- 23:25who became one of us. Hope is Jesus.
- 23:32And while it's true that our godliness and our faithfulness
- 23:36don't protect us from disappointment or suffering, nor
- 23:40do they guarantee that we will get everything we want or hope
- 23:43for, it's also true that it's in those very unmet longings, in
- 23:52those places of of desire and hope that God can meet us.
- 24:00Those places can become places where we can encounter God.
- 24:07And even in God's fulfillment of those longings and prayers, even
- 24:12if it looks different than we were imagining, we have to
- 24:16remember that God's answers to our hopes are not just about our
- 24:22personal dreams or our personal ambitions.
- 24:25God's answers to our hopes are woven into that grand narrative
- 24:31of redemption, the larger story that God is writing on the pages
- 24:36of history. But we can have hope that even
- 24:42if our hopes and longings go unmet in this life on this
- 24:47earth, there is coming a day when Jesus will come again.
- 24:53And when he comes, he will bring with him a new heaven and a new
- 24:57earth. He will bring about the
- 24:59restoration and renewal of all things, the restoration of all
- 25:08things. Listen to the way the chorus to
- 25:13every valley puts it, the the song I mentioned at the
- 25:17beginning of the sermon. Listen to how they say it.
- 25:19They say there is going to be a day every low valley he will
- 25:26raise. There is going to be a day the
- 25:29hills and mountains going to be made plain.
- 25:33There's going to be a day winding, roads going to be made
- 25:39straight. Comfort, comfort, comfort.
- 25:46It's hard to wait, so hard to wait.
- 25:55But even in the midst of our waiting, our God is the God of
- 26:00all hope, and our deepest hope and longings can only ever be
- 26:07met in Him. But if we'll let him, those
- 26:13longings and hopes can become a place of encounter and
- 26:17transformation in Him. Let's pray together.
- 26:26God, we are so grateful that you are the God of all hope, that
- 26:34you are working in every situation, even when we don't
- 26:38see it or understand it. You are working, You are moving,
- 26:45You are bringing things to your ultimate purposes.
- 26:50You are moving things toward the culmination of history, when
- 26:55your Son Jesus will come again in glory and he will bring the
- 27:02new heavens and the new earth. He will restore and renew all
- 27:07that was broken and marred by sin.
- 27:12God, we long for that day. We look forward and hope for
- 27:18that day and we ask God, would you meet us here even in the
- 27:26midst of our waiting, even in the midst of our our unmet hopes
- 27:32and longings? Would you speak hope into our
- 27:38lives again in those places where we feel like we've given
- 27:45up hope? Would you remind us that with
- 27:49you God, all things are possible.
- 27:56So we look to you not just for our hope, but as our hope, the
- 28:03source of all hope. We pray you would make that a
- 28:09reality in our lives today. We love you and we pray all this
- 28:16Jesus, in your name, Amen.
