Latest / The Richard Sherman Podcast / NFL Week 1 REACTION: Giants UPSET Cowboys, Bills vs. Texans, Bears Score 59 & Myles Garrett Injury
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Richard Sherman Podcast, and what a
- 0:03Speaker 1: game for the New York football Giants. John Harbaugh's debut
- 0:08Speaker 1: with the Giants, and they go out there and control
- 0:11Speaker 1: the game from start to finish. They did a fantastic job.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Jackson Dart was 23 of 29, very efficient, 230 yards,
- 0:16Speaker 1: three touchdowns, also ran it 11 times for 54 yards.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Cam Scadable, 18 carries, 81 yards, and a touchdown. Just fantastic. Slow, methodical,
- 0:31Speaker 1: grinded-out football. Isaiah Likely was the star of the night,
- 0:34Speaker 1: was unguardable, had eight targets, eight catches, 78 yards, two touchdowns,
- 0:40Speaker 1: dominant performance. Then Malik Neighbors, who wasn't sure if he
- 0:43Speaker 1: was going to play this game, six receptions, 69 yards.
- 0:47Speaker 1: And the story of the game, I don't, it was just,
- 0:52Speaker 1: it never seemed like they weren't in control of this game.
- 0:56Speaker 1: A great plan in the first half, a great plan
- 0:58Speaker 1: in the second half, only allowed the Dallas Cowboys to
- 1:02Speaker 1: possess the ball twice in the second half. The entire
- 1:05Speaker 1: second half, they possessed the ball twice. Now, they scored
- 1:09Speaker 1: both times they possessed it, but I tell you what,
- 1:12Speaker 1: you can't score a third time if you don't get
- 1:14Speaker 1: it a third time. And that sounds great in principle.
- 1:18Speaker 1: That probably sounds great in planning, but in execution, it's
- 1:22Speaker 1: rare that you ever in the National Football League hear
- 1:25Speaker 1: about a team getting two possessions in a half. And
- 1:29Speaker 1: John Harbaugh has to be ecstatic about how his team responded.
- 1:33Speaker 1: You heard about things all training camp. They're running more
- 1:36Speaker 1: after practice. They're doing things. They're buying in to what
- 1:39Speaker 1: John Harbaugh was preaching. And if you've ever played for
- 1:43Speaker 1: a Harbaugh, you know they are as old school as
- 1:46Speaker 1: old school gets. And the things that football was built
- 1:50Speaker 1: on fundamentally is what they believe. And They believe that
- 1:57Speaker 1: more is more. So there's no substitute for more work,
- 2:01Speaker 1: for more conditioning, for tackling in practice, for playing football.
- 2:06Speaker 1: And I know things have evolved with technology and analytics
- 2:10Speaker 1: and everybody wanting to be more health conscious, but that's
- 2:14Speaker 1: just not how these guys think. And it's worked well
- 2:17Speaker 1: for this New York football Giants football team. Now on
- 2:19Speaker 1: the flip side, the damn Dallas Cowboys. Boy, I'll tell
- 2:24Speaker 1: you what. if I every time I want to try
- 2:27Speaker 1: to give you credit every time I want to try
- 2:30Speaker 1: to believe in the Dallas Cowboys y'all let me down
- 2:33Speaker 1: and y'all call me a Dallas hater Dallas hater because
- 2:36Speaker 1: you know what I hate I hate believing in somebody
- 2:39Speaker 1: that don't believe in themselves and the Dallas Cowboys who
- 2:42Speaker 1: have revamped their team revamped their defense did all these
- 2:45Speaker 1: things drafted Caleb Downs um They got Overshawn. They got
- 2:50Speaker 1: Quinn and Williams. They got Kenny Clark. They got all
- 2:53Speaker 1: these guys that show so much promise. Malik Hooker, Deron Bland.
- 2:57Speaker 1: They got guys who can play the game, and then
- 3:00Speaker 1: they don't play the game well anymore. And then Cam
- 3:02Speaker 1: Scadable was running the football all over you. And then
- 3:05Speaker 1: on the offensive side, you have all these weapons. Dak
- 3:08Speaker 1: Prescott has consistently been one of the best quarterbacks in
- 3:11Speaker 1: the league, regardless of what you feel about him. He
- 3:13Speaker 1: didn't play as great to date, but usually plays at
- 3:16Speaker 1: a high level. C.D. Lamp. has played at a high level.
- 3:20Speaker 1: George Pickens, when C.D. Lamb was out, George Pickens has
- 3:23Speaker 1: played at a high level, playing under the franchise tag,
- 3:25Speaker 1: very motivated. Nothing. C.D. Lamb, five catches, 44 yards, a touchdown.
- 3:31Speaker 1: George Pickens, three receptions on six targets, 28 yards. That's, like,
- 3:37Speaker 1: not enough. Not enough. And, again, they only have the
- 3:41Speaker 1: ball twice in the second half, so you can't put
- 3:43Speaker 1: all the blame on them.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Because.
- 3:47Speaker 1: their defense has got to get stops. And you can
- 3:49Speaker 1: put the blame just about everywhere. You can throw a
- 3:51Speaker 1: little blame at everybody because the defense couldn't get stopped.
- 3:54Speaker 1: There was bonehead penalties. There were things that you just
- 3:57Speaker 1: can't do against a well-coached and disciplined team, which you
- 4:04Speaker 1: never really expect to say about the Giants, at least
- 4:06Speaker 1: as of late. But when it's a John Harbaugh coached team,
- 4:08Speaker 1: those are the things that you expect. And he brought
- 4:11Speaker 1: some guys over from Baltimore that are going to help
- 4:14Speaker 1: him win. And man, This was as good of a
- 4:18Speaker 1: game as I've seen from a John Harbaugh coached team.
- 4:22Speaker 1: This is a great opener. Jackson Dart is the guy
- 4:26Speaker 1: they expected him to be. He showed, had a great game. This,
- 4:32Speaker 1: I hate to say it, but this Giants team might
- 4:34Speaker 1: be for real. We gonna see. I mean, they got
- 4:36Speaker 1: a game next week against the LA Rams that will
- 4:41Speaker 1: tell us a lot. Like, are they legitimate? Now, the
- 4:44Speaker 1: LA Rams are for sure legitimate. I know Everybody's going
- 4:47Speaker 1: to argue, man, what happened in Australia? Australia, we'll call
- 4:50Speaker 1: that a separate beast. But if they somehow find a
- 4:53Speaker 1: way to upset the LA Rams, it's a conversation now.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Much different conversation, that's for sure. Another great weekend of football.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Make sure you like and subscribe to this podcast so
- 5:13Speaker 1: we can keep delivering incredible content. So first, let's start
- 5:17Speaker 1: off with the news of the day. Myles Garrett undergoes
- 5:21Speaker 1: arthroscopic surgery on his ailing knee. He will miss a month,
- 5:26Speaker 1: and the Rams have a tough schedule this month. They
- 5:30Speaker 1: got the Giants, which is a game they could win,
- 5:32Speaker 1: but the Giants are looking very lively on this Sunday night.
- 5:35Speaker 1: The Broncos, very tough team, who was in the AFC
- 5:38Speaker 1: Championship last year. The Eagles, a team that's always tough.
- 5:43Speaker 1: another AFC team that is always tough. So what, what
- 5:47Speaker 1: is their record going to be after this slew of games?
- 5:50Speaker 1: Who knows? They're a great team. They were in an
- 5:52Speaker 1: NFC championship. They have shown perseverance. I don't think they're
- 5:55Speaker 1: going to have another showing like they did in Australia.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I feel like that was jet lag. That was rigid residual,
- 6:04Speaker 1: you know, uh, effects of, of traveling the day before
- 6:08Speaker 1: a game when you got to be on a plane,
- 6:10Speaker 1: 15 hours, et cetera, et cetera. But, I don't think
- 6:12Speaker 1: they'll show like that again. I think they can beat
- 6:14Speaker 1: the Giants. I think it's going to be a dogfight
- 6:16Speaker 1: with the Broncos, but I think McVay is going to
- 6:18Speaker 1: have them ready. The Eagles, an NFC opponent that could
- 6:21Speaker 1: go either way. They did not look great today. They
- 6:24Speaker 1: looked okay against the Commanders, a team that we, you know,
- 6:27Speaker 1: I think the league has low expectations for this year.
- 6:30Speaker 1: They don't have a ton on the offensive side of
- 6:32Speaker 1: the ball. Defensively, they had some guys step up today.
- 6:36Speaker 1: But I think the Bills is going to be a
- 6:39Speaker 1: tough game to win. Bill showed some weakness on defense,
- 6:43Speaker 1: but Josh Allen is still Josh Allen, Mitchell, and he
- 6:46Speaker 1: looked great today.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Richard, another big news of the week. Sam Darnold obviously
- 6:50Speaker 2: gets injured week one, that opening Wednesday night football that
- 6:55Speaker 2: we saw. The big win over the Patriots. He goes
- 6:57Speaker 2: out with all things a glute injury. A lot of
- 7:00Speaker 2: folks thought it was a hip, maybe a knee. It
- 7:02Speaker 2: turns out to be a glute. He's going to be
- 7:04Speaker 2: out this week. We saw Drew Locke, and this was
- 7:07Speaker 2: a guy out of Missouri, right, gets a starting opportunity
- 7:10Speaker 2: with the Broncos, ultimately doesn't keep that job, ends up
- 7:14Speaker 2: with the Seahawks. He's a guy that you could argue
- 7:17Speaker 2: deserves another opportunity. He's going to get that opportunity here
- 7:20Speaker 2: with the Seahawks. Richard, you predicted that the Seahawks team
- 7:23Speaker 2: would start 4-0, and here they are without Sam Darnold.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Now Drew Locke is under center for the foreseeable future.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Do you see this team continuing on that 4-0 trajectory
- 7:35Speaker 2: that you called early in the season?
- 7:38Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. I think Brian Fleury is going to tailor
- 7:42Speaker 1: a game plan that is specifically based on Drew Locke's
- 7:48Speaker 1: skill set. He has a little bit more mobility. I
- 7:52Speaker 1: think they're going to move him out of the pocket
- 7:53Speaker 1: a little bit more. Obviously, Sam was fine. He has
- 7:56Speaker 1: mobility of his own, but I think you know, it's
- 7:59Speaker 1: not necessarily true that the, the thing Sam does well,
- 8:03Speaker 1: Drew does well. So when you're, when you're configuring a
- 8:05Speaker 1: game plan for Drew Locke, it's going to be a
- 8:07Speaker 1: lot different, but when you go into the week, you
- 8:09Speaker 1: expect Sam Darnold to play. So I think you're going
- 8:12Speaker 1: to see them probably lean on the run game a
- 8:14Speaker 1: little bit more. Maybe the screen game is going to
- 8:16Speaker 1: be a little more prevalent. JSN is obviously going to
- 8:19Speaker 1: be a huge factor in that. Um, I think they're
- 8:22Speaker 1: going to just keep it safe for them. They're going
- 8:24Speaker 1: to lean on that defense to make some plays, to
- 8:26Speaker 1: create some turnovers, to give them some field position. They're
- 8:29Speaker 1: going to lean on their special teams to make plays,
- 8:34Speaker 1: to give them a lead, to give them some cushion
- 8:36Speaker 1: in this game. But I still think they can go 4-0.
- 8:39Speaker 1: I think it's going to be tough. The Chargers did
- 8:41Speaker 1: not look great today against the Arizona Cardinals. And in
- 8:44Speaker 1: the same breath, the Arizona Cardinals and Jacoby Brissett looked
- 8:47Speaker 1: really good. So you've got to give them credit for
- 8:49Speaker 1: what they were able to put on tape This week,
- 8:52Speaker 1: they looked good on both sides of the ball. Mike
- 8:56Speaker 1: LaFleur is doing a great job there, putting together an
- 8:59Speaker 1: offense that's going to be dangerous. And Jacoby Brissett was
- 9:02Speaker 1: holding out, wanting some more money, and you see why.
- 9:05Speaker 1: He out-dueled Justin Herbert today. And we talked about during
- 9:09Speaker 1: our preview how I expected Justin Herbert to have a
- 9:12Speaker 1: really breakout season this season with Mike McDaniel and everything
- 9:17Speaker 1: that he brings and the creative aspect that he has
- 9:19Speaker 1: on this offense. But you did not see it in
- 9:21Speaker 1: this game.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Richard, let's talk about some of these games this Sunday.
- 9:25Speaker 2: The first Sunday of week one. Here we are, guys.
- 9:29Speaker 2: The NFL is officially kicked off. And we were talking
- 9:32Speaker 2: about it in the pregame. Richard, you were all about
- 9:36Speaker 2: this Bills-Texans game. You had your eyes on the defense.
- 9:40Speaker 2: We thought it was going to be an offensive battle.
- 9:42Speaker 2: One of the best offenses in the league, the Buffalo Bills.
- 9:46Speaker 2: against one of the most stout defenses in the league,
- 9:49Speaker 2: the Houston Texans. Richard, it turned out to be an
- 9:52Speaker 2: absolute offensive game, 36-31 the final. This Houston Texan team,
- 9:58Speaker 2: which held its ground, hat on their defense, looked not
- 10:03Speaker 2: the part. Josh Allen picks them apart for 334 in
- 10:07Speaker 2: the air, two touchdowns, another six for 23, another two
- 10:10Speaker 2: touchdowns rushing. What gives here? Are the Houston Texans, are
- 10:14Speaker 2: you worried about their defense, or does this just go
- 10:17Speaker 2: to show you how good Josh Allen is? in this
- 10:19Speaker 2: Buffalo Bills' offenses? I think it's a little bit of both.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Josh Allen deserves a ton of credit. He played brilliantly
- 10:28Speaker 2: in this game early.
- 10:30Speaker 1: He used his legs when he needed to use them.
- 10:32Speaker 1: He used his arm. He honestly threw an arm punt
- 10:36Speaker 1: right before the game-sealing touchdown to Palmer. He threw it
- 10:42Speaker 1: up to Kamari Lassiter, and Kamari Lassiter had a chance
- 10:45Speaker 1: in it. to end this game, to get the Texans
- 10:48Speaker 1: a win with a minute 40 to go. I think
- 10:50Speaker 1: they could have pretty much ran out the clock and
- 10:52Speaker 1: ended that game with the lead, and he dropped the
- 10:55Speaker 1: interception right in his hands. And I think that's going
- 10:57Speaker 1: to be one that haunts the Houston Texans all season
- 11:00Speaker 1: long because they had the game won. I mean, you know,
- 11:03Speaker 1: anything can happen, especially when you've got Josh Allen on
- 11:05Speaker 1: the other side. But they would have been in position,
- 11:09Speaker 1: in control, with the ball, and a chance to run
- 11:12Speaker 1: out the clock. They had been running the ball well
- 11:14Speaker 1: all game. David Montgomery, your guy, had three touchdowns on
- 11:17Speaker 1: the day. He had been very effective, but obviously that's
- 11:21Speaker 1: not how it went. You got to give Josh Allen
- 11:23Speaker 1: a ton of credit. Dalton Kincaid was unstoppable in this game.
- 11:27Speaker 1: He looked like the best tight end in the league
- 11:30Speaker 1: at times in this game, and he was doing it
- 11:31Speaker 1: against safeties. He did it against two really good safeties.
- 11:34Speaker 1: He attacked Blankenship during this game. I saw him catch
- 11:38Speaker 1: a pass against Kamari Lassiter. I mean, everybody... throughout this game,
- 11:42Speaker 1: tried to cover him. They tried to cover him with linebackers, safeties, corners,
- 11:45Speaker 1: and he continued to have success. He had five catches
- 11:47Speaker 1: for 130 yards with a 40-yarder in the game, and
- 11:51Speaker 1: I think he's the difference maker this year. If they're
- 11:54Speaker 1: going to be able to utilize him in that way
- 11:57Speaker 1: while also getting Josh Palmer involved, getting Khalil Shakur involved,
- 12:01Speaker 1: getting DJ Moore involved, who had five catches for 100
- 12:05Speaker 1: yards and a touchdown, he looked really good. They looked amazing. Great.
- 12:09Speaker 1: And Joe Brady, you could see his fingerprints all over
- 12:12Speaker 1: this game. They were aggressive when they needed to be aggressive.
- 12:16Speaker 1: But the game could have went either way. You got
- 12:17Speaker 1: to give them credit because this defense is a great defense.
- 12:20Speaker 1: There are a lot of all pros in that secondary,
- 12:23Speaker 1: and they did not look like it in this game.
- 12:25Speaker 1: The way Josh Allen handled them, the way he was
- 12:28Speaker 1: throwing the ball around the yard, regardless of who was
- 12:30Speaker 1: covering who. And you got to respect that and give
- 12:33Speaker 1: him a ton of credit in this Buffalo offense, in
- 12:35Speaker 1: the Buffalo defense. They had three sacks. Took the ball
- 12:38Speaker 1: away twice. They're going to be a formidable outfit. I
- 12:42Speaker 1: look forward to seeing them against your Detroit Lions in
- 12:44Speaker 1: Buffalo on Thursday night next week.
- 12:47Speaker 2: No question about it. And you said it too, DJ Moore,
- 12:50Speaker 2: another guy that they added this offseason. This Buffalo team
- 12:53Speaker 2: last year did not have a DJ Moore. They lose
- 12:56Speaker 2: Stephon Diggs last year. This year they go out and
- 12:59Speaker 2: get a pseudo number one wide receiver and DJ Moore.
- 13:04Speaker 2: And you see this offense just clicking away. Give Josh
- 13:07Speaker 2: Allen weapons. He can do a lot of dangerous things
- 13:10Speaker 2: in the air, on the ground, you name it. This
- 13:13Speaker 2: Buffalo Bills team could be a force. Richard, on the
- 13:17Speaker 2: other side of the ball for the Houston Texans, a
- 13:18Speaker 2: lot of eyeballs on C.J. Stroud this year. In contract
- 13:22Speaker 2: negotiations with this team, he delivers a solid outing. Throws
- 13:27Speaker 2: for 274 yards, two touchdowns, ultimately in a loss. What
- 13:31Speaker 2: are you thinking of C.J. Stroud in his game right
- 13:34Speaker 2: now as he leads his Texas team now and in
- 13:37Speaker 2: the future?
- 13:40Speaker 1: If I'm them, I feel like this game is encouraging.
- 13:42Speaker 1: It's encouraging. I thought he executed well down the stretch
- 13:46Speaker 1: when they needed points. He was able to drive them
- 13:49Speaker 1: down the field. I thought David Montgomery was fantastic. I
- 13:52Speaker 1: thought Woody Marks got in there and gave them the
- 13:54Speaker 1: spark they needed. Nico Collins looked great. Jalen Noel had
- 13:59Speaker 1: his plays. Dalton Schultz had a few plays here and there.
- 14:02Speaker 1: But I thought the concern was the defense. And this
- 14:07Speaker 1: is no shot at Buffalo, but you expected Daniil Hunter
- 14:11Speaker 1: and Will Anderson to have a bigger impact in this game,
- 14:13Speaker 1: and they did a great job of negating them. They
- 14:16Speaker 1: held them to only two sacks on the day, no
- 14:19Speaker 1: takeaways in the game, and they had shots. They had shots.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Like I said, Kamari Lassiter had a shot to end
- 14:25Speaker 1: this game, potentially end this game with an interception right
- 14:29Speaker 1: before the touchdown, and that's football. Mitchell, when you mess up,
- 14:33Speaker 1: Miss Ops, you know what the football gods say? It's
- 14:36Speaker 1: touchdown on the next play. Oh, you gave them another chance?
- 14:39Speaker 1: You gave them life? They went and attacked Kamari Lassiter
- 14:44Speaker 1: with Josh Palmer on the next play on a post route,
- 14:49Speaker 1: and it was a touchdown because you cannot do it.
- 14:52Speaker 1: You cannot give a team life again. After right then
- 14:55Speaker 1: and there, you have to be a big-time playmaker, and
- 14:57Speaker 1: I love Kamari Lassiter. I love the way he plays.
- 14:59Speaker 1: I love his style. I think he's one of the
- 15:01Speaker 1: best corners in the league, but you got to have
- 15:02Speaker 1: that play because of all the things I just said.
- 15:05Speaker 1: You're a big-time playmaker. And if he has that play,
- 15:09Speaker 1: I think there's a great chance Houston wins this game.
- 15:12Speaker 1: And the result's different. So, obviously, he'll learn from it
- 15:16Speaker 1: and continue to grow. But this is a humbling game
- 15:20Speaker 1: for that Houston defense that was so vaunted last year.
- 15:23Speaker 1: And I'm sure Domingo Ryan is going to be in there.
- 15:25Speaker 1: And it's going to be a tough film day for them.
- 15:27Speaker 1: And it's going to have to motivate them and have
- 15:30Speaker 1: to give them energy, especially with the Cincinnati Bengals coming
- 15:32Speaker 1: into town next week.
- 15:34Speaker 2: No question about it. Listen, Houston, they proved today they
- 15:37Speaker 2: can hang with the big boys. I mean, this is
- 15:39Speaker 2: a team I think is going to be in it
- 15:40Speaker 2: till the end. I expect them to be a playoff team.
- 15:43Speaker 2: This defense, I think it might have been a little
- 15:45Speaker 2: bit of a wake-up call for them. We'll see how
- 15:47Speaker 2: they respond next week.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Football is back, folks, and you need to change the
- 15:52Speaker 1: way you invest in the NFL this season. It's time
- 15:56Speaker 1: to finally ditch your old sportsbook apps. because Polymarket is here.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Polymarket is a legal prediction market now available in all
- 16:04Speaker 2: 50 states. And those old sports books, they're a relic
- 16:08Speaker 2: of the past. On Polymarket, you can trade on all
- 16:11Speaker 2: things NFL. From the Sunday slate. to who wins rookie
- 16:15Speaker 2: of the year, to who performs the halftime show.
- 16:18Speaker 1: We hear from listeners all the time about the sportsbooks
- 16:21Speaker 1: driving them crazy, trying to cash out live. They can
- 16:24Speaker 1: block you as often as they want, holding your money hostage.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Holly Market gives you the freedom to cash out instantly.
- 16:33Speaker 2: If the momentum swings, you sell off of it in
- 16:35Speaker 2: real time. You are in control. No one can lock
- 16:38Speaker 2: you out, and you can also buy in any time.
- 16:42Speaker 2: So when the market dips, like if a team starts
- 16:45Speaker 2: slow and drops to, say, 40%, that's not a loss.
- 16:49Speaker 2: That's when you buy in. At Polymarket, you can buy
- 16:52Speaker 2: cheap and ride the momentum back up.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Polymarket is so confident that you won't go back to
- 16:57Speaker 1: your old ways that they're issuing a challenge. They're giving
- 17:01Speaker 1: you a $ 50 bonus when you deposit just $ 10. Sign
- 17:05Speaker 1: up right now with the promo code Sherman.
- 17:08Speaker 2: That's polymarket.us and use promo code Sherman to get a
- 17:12Speaker 2: $ 50 bonus when you deposit just $ 10. Richard, defense did
- 17:18Speaker 2: not seem to exist in week one. Let's move forward
- 17:21Speaker 2: to the Chicago Bears game where they put 59 points
- 17:25Speaker 2: on the board at Carolina against the Panthers. Final score
- 17:28Speaker 2: in this one, 59-37. I don't know about NFL history,
- 17:34Speaker 2: but I got to believe this is up there in
- 17:36Speaker 2: terms of most points scored in a game in a
- 17:37Speaker 2: week one matchup in the NFL. Richard, Ben Johnson comes
- 17:42Speaker 2: to Chicago last year. His calling card is offense. And
- 17:46Speaker 2: we saw a lot of it today. 59 points put
- 17:50Speaker 2: up on the board. What are your thoughts on the
- 17:52Speaker 2: Chicago Bears team, specifically with their offense? Because Caleb Williams,
- 17:57Speaker 2: still so young, right? I mean, 21 of 29, 269 yards,
- 18:02Speaker 2: two touchdowns, gets two more on the ground. I mean,
- 18:05Speaker 2: this team, you know, as they grow and progress through
- 18:07Speaker 2: the season, so impressive. Carolina Panthers, let's not forget, they
- 18:12Speaker 2: were in the playoffs last year. What are your thoughts
- 18:14Speaker 2: on this game, Richard, as the Chicago Bears, 59 points
- 18:19Speaker 2: on the board in week one?
- 18:21Speaker 1: Well, they got me reconsidering my NFC North pick because,
- 18:25Speaker 1: I mean... It's like, Mitchell, I love your Detroit Lions.
- 18:30Speaker 1: I know. I love that Honolulu Blue, but goodness gracious,
- 18:35Speaker 1: these guys put up 59 points in the National Football
- 18:37Speaker 1: League against a playoff opponent, against a team that was
- 18:41Speaker 1: in the playoffs last year, a team that won their division.
- 18:44Speaker 1: And that's impressive. Ben Johnson has to be over the
- 18:47Speaker 1: moon because there wasn't anything crazy out of the ordinary.
- 18:52Speaker 1: They ran the ball incredibly well. DeAndre Swift. 18 carries
- 18:57Speaker 1: for 124 yards, three touchdowns, brilliant game from him. Then
- 19:00Speaker 1: you look up and Kyle Menungai has a 100-yard game
- 19:03Speaker 1: off 10 carries and a touchdown. And so they were
- 19:07Speaker 1: drawing and dialing it up at a very high tilt. Now,
- 19:10Speaker 1: if you're on the other side and you're the Carolina
- 19:12Speaker 1: Panthers and you're Ejoro Evero, who was an up-and-coming darling,
- 19:18Speaker 1: defensive darling in this league and getting head coaching interviews,
- 19:23Speaker 1: You kind of got to go back to the drawing
- 19:24Speaker 1: board and figure out what you're doing wrong because they
- 19:26Speaker 1: ran the ball up and down the field, and then
- 19:29Speaker 1: you have Caleb Williams, and then Caleb Williams is out
- 19:32Speaker 1: there executing. Great catch out there. Roma Dunes, they only
- 19:35Speaker 1: had two catches for 52 yards, but one of those
- 19:38Speaker 1: catches was outstanding. Took an old-school Moss right off the helmet, Mitchell.
- 19:42Speaker 1: It's brilliant play. Luther Burton, five for 63. Not crazy,
- 19:47Speaker 1: flashy numbers, but Caleb Williams looked in command this entire game.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Looked comfortable. And there was conversations before Ben Johnson got
- 19:58Speaker 1: there that it takes a second for a quarterback to
- 20:01Speaker 1: really understand and start to play at a high level
- 20:06Speaker 1: within the Ben Johnson scheme. And we saw it. with
- 20:09Speaker 1: our guy Jared Goff. You know, when Jared Goff started
- 20:11Speaker 1: to understand and started to feel he had the best
- 20:13Speaker 1: year of his career, you know, the Lions went, I think, 14-3.
- 20:19Speaker 1: And it was phenomenal. No, no, no. Did they go 14-3?
- 20:24Speaker 1: I think they went to the NFC Championship that year
- 20:28Speaker 1: and lost to the San Francisco 49ers, unfortunately. But he
- 20:33Speaker 1: started to understand. He started to play at a high level.
- 20:35Speaker 1: He started to get it, and that's exactly what's happening
- 20:38Speaker 1: for Caleb Williams. The game's starting to come easier for him.
- 20:41Speaker 1: For them to put up 59 points is incredible. Now, obviously,
- 20:44Speaker 1: on the other flip side of that, 37 points for
- 20:47Speaker 1: the Carolina Panthers, that's winning football. I'm sure Dave Canales
- 20:51Speaker 1: is over the moon about how Bryce Young played. He
- 20:54Speaker 1: threw for 361, three touchdowns, and only one interception. He
- 20:58Speaker 1: ran another touchdown in on the ground. He himself had
- 21:02Speaker 1: four touchdowns on the day to match Caleb Williams' four touchdowns.
- 21:06Speaker 1: So I'm sure that's really encouraging for the Carolina Panthers.
- 21:09Speaker 1: But for that Chicago Bears defense, what's going on? What's
- 21:13Speaker 1: going on? There's a lot of question marks for a
- 21:15Speaker 1: defense that played well. Sure, they had two sacks. They
- 21:18Speaker 1: took the ball away three times. You definitely get patted
- 21:20Speaker 1: on the back for that. But at the end of
- 21:22Speaker 1: the day, you gave up 37 points. And on the
- 21:23Speaker 1: Carolina side, Idro Evero, like, Mitch, I don't know how
- 21:29Speaker 1: you come back from that. Giving up 59 points.
- 21:33Speaker 2: I don't know how you do. I mean, Richard, this game,
- 21:36Speaker 2: in a nutshell, at home, too, for Carolina, giving up
- 21:39Speaker 2: 59 points in week one. You had all month to
- 21:43Speaker 2: prepare for this game.
- 21:45Speaker 1: All training camp. This is what you're preparing for. You've
- 21:48Speaker 1: studied all offseason knowing your opponent since the schedule came out,
- 21:51Speaker 1: knowing what you're going to study, knowing you're playing Ben Johnson.
- 21:54Speaker 1: You're not playing some new up-and-coming coordinator who you don't
- 21:58Speaker 1: really understand. This guy's been in the league.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Is this the biggest surprise of week one, this score
- 22:05Speaker 2: on the board here? Because 59 points, this does not
- 22:08Speaker 2: happen often in the NFL, Richard. I mean, how big
- 22:10Speaker 2: of a deal is this for the Chicago Bears?
- 22:13Speaker 1: It's huge. It's huge. It's a great game and a
- 22:16Speaker 1: marvelous performance by the Chicago Bears offense. I am really
- 22:20Speaker 1: surprised by the score. I am really surprised. I'm not
- 22:23Speaker 1: surprised Chicago won. I thought Chicago could beat Carolina, but
- 22:27Speaker 1: For them to score 59 points, for them to beat
- 22:32Speaker 1: them by 22 points after giving up 37. A team
- 22:36Speaker 1: scores 37 points, they expect to win. Most games in
- 22:39Speaker 1: the National Football League, you score 37. Your quarterback throws
- 22:43Speaker 1: for 300 in three touchdowns, four total touchdowns. You're thinking
- 22:48Speaker 1: that's a win. And for you to lose that game
- 22:50Speaker 1: by 20, it's... These are some strange things. There were
- 22:54Speaker 1: some strange things happening today. And we're going to get
- 22:56Speaker 1: to that Green Bay Packers game because that one was
- 22:59Speaker 1: another strange one where you look at the stat sheet,
- 23:02Speaker 1: you look at the box score, and you're like, wait
- 23:04Speaker 1: a minute. They lost that game? And not only did
- 23:07Speaker 1: they lose, they lost by 17? You look at this
- 23:10Speaker 1: and you're like, quarterback played well. The receivers played well.
- 23:14Speaker 1: They didn't run it that great. But you're not expecting
- 23:18Speaker 1: them to get, you know, beat by 22 points. No question.
- 23:22Speaker 2: And before we leave this game, under the radar signing
- 23:24Speaker 2: by the Chicago Bears, they pluck Kalief Raymond from the
- 23:27Speaker 2: Detroit Lions. This guy was a Swiss Army Knight for
- 23:30Speaker 2: the Detroit Lions. He goes to Chicago, eight receptions on
- 23:34Speaker 2: nine targets for 84 yards, an impressive showing in his
- 23:37Speaker 2: first outing with the Chicago Bears. Ben Johnson clearly knows
- 23:40Speaker 2: what he's doing in Chicago. More to come there. We'll
- 23:43Speaker 2: see how this progresses. Let's stick in the NFC North. Richard,
- 23:47Speaker 2: a game I was at in Detroit, Ford Field, For
- 23:51Speaker 2: any fans there, they got a kick-ass new lion head
- 23:54Speaker 2: in the corner of the end zone that lights up
- 23:56Speaker 2: every time they score. Detroit's doing things right, Richard. But
- 24:00Speaker 2: this game, up 21-0, it looks like the Lions just
- 24:05Speaker 2: went on cruise control. And New Orleans got back in
- 24:09Speaker 2: the game. Tyler Schuch, holy cow, puts up over 400
- 24:12Speaker 2: passing yards. The Detroit Lions could not stop them with
- 24:16Speaker 2: any effort in the second half. And Detroit narrowly escapes
- 24:20Speaker 2: in overtime thanks to a failed two-point conversion attempt by
- 24:24Speaker 2: New Orleans. Detroit comes out victorious 31-30. Richard, I leave
- 24:29Speaker 2: this game with a lot of question marks. First being,
- 24:33Speaker 2: is Drew Petzing the right guy? This team looked very
- 24:36Speaker 2: conservative offensively. We called it coming into this week. They're
- 24:41Speaker 2: going to run a lot of two tight end sets,
- 24:43Speaker 2: and that they did.
- 24:45Speaker 1: But Richard.
- 24:47Speaker 2: At the expense of what? At the expense of airing
- 24:49Speaker 2: the ball out. I mean, we saw Amon Ross St. Brown,
- 24:54Speaker 2: 10 receptions. Guess how many yards, Richard? 67 yards. That
- 25:00Speaker 2: is not enough. 10 receptions, 67 yards. If Detroit wants
- 25:06Speaker 2: to get back to their winning ways and their dominant ways,
- 25:09Speaker 2: they got to start airing the ball out. That's just
- 25:11Speaker 2: my two cents on this game in a nutshell from
- 25:14Speaker 2: being there. But Richard, I'm curious to hear your thoughts.
- 25:17Speaker 2: about the Detroit Lions in week one after narrowly escaping
- 25:20Speaker 2: the New Orleans Saints?
- 25:22Speaker 1: I would say when you're concerned about your defense, you
- 25:27Speaker 1: try to possess the ball. And I can understand to
- 25:32Speaker 1: some level what the plan was. The plan was, hey,
- 25:36Speaker 1: let's get a lot of plays. We'll dink and dunk.
- 25:38Speaker 1: We'll control the game. We'll control the clock. Our defense
- 25:41Speaker 1: won't be out there very long. And they'll figure it
- 25:44Speaker 1: out as they go. They'll get better. Aiden Hutchinson had
- 25:47Speaker 1: two sacks in the game. He did well. Derek Barnes
- 25:49Speaker 1: looked good. Jameer Gibbs looked really good. 29 carries. I mean,
- 25:53Speaker 1: it had a full workload today. Full workload. 29 carries,
- 25:57Speaker 1: 156 yards, five receptions, 30 yards. That's where the concern
- 26:02Speaker 1: has to be. It's almost like Christian McCaffrey last year
- 26:05Speaker 1: for the San Francisco 49ers. Like, after a while... you
- 26:10Speaker 1: start to get worn down and you start to wonder like, who's,
- 26:13Speaker 1: who's behind Jameer Gibbs? Who else do you have when
- 26:16Speaker 1: he has games years where he's splitting it with David Montgomery?
- 26:19Speaker 1: And it's, it's, you know, you're like, Hey, he gets
- 26:22Speaker 1: in there. He's explosive. He does his thing, but then
- 26:24Speaker 1: he gets a break. He doesn't have to get beat up.
- 26:26Speaker 1: He can survive the season, but how can he survive
- 26:30Speaker 1: 30 carries a game? Can he, can he, can his
- 26:33Speaker 1: body survive this? We will see. Maybe it'll be fine, but,
- 26:36Speaker 1: What we've learned over the history of the game is
- 26:38Speaker 1: 30 carries on the back, it brings that shelf life
- 26:42Speaker 1: down considerably. And I think that's what their plan was,
- 26:46Speaker 1: just be conservative, keep the defense off the field. But
- 26:50Speaker 1: I told you this before we got on the show,
- 26:53Speaker 1: and I've said it before, I do not like defenses
- 26:56Speaker 1: that live in man coverage in a predictable way. And
- 26:59Speaker 1: I thought that was the difference in this game. When
- 27:03Speaker 1: Detroit was out there and Tyler Shaw and kevin moore
- 27:08Speaker 1: and that offense knows they're going to be a man
- 27:10Speaker 1: coverage especially in the second half especially in the red
- 27:13Speaker 1: zone it's not hard to pick that off that defense
- 27:16Speaker 1: apart because it's so player dependent unless you got really
- 27:20Speaker 1: phenomenal incredible man-to-man coverage corners which even if you do
- 27:26Speaker 1: it's still tough but you don't you don't have those
- 27:29Speaker 1: corners and so A great coordinator is mixing up zones,
- 27:33Speaker 1: is disguising it, is bringing different pressures, figuring out ways
- 27:37Speaker 1: to manipulate the offensive line. And there were some of
- 27:40Speaker 1: that involved, but with man coverage behind it. And Tyler
- 27:45Speaker 1: Shaw lit them up to the tune of 410 yards
- 27:48Speaker 1: and three touchdowns. Sure, there were two interceptions in there,
- 27:51Speaker 1: and big plays made. But Chris Alave, 10 for 182. Mitchell,
- 27:56Speaker 1: that's the kind of game you wanted from Amah Ross St.
- 27:58Speaker 2: Brown.
- 27:59Speaker 1: That's the kind of game you wanted an aggressive passing attack.
- 28:02Speaker 1: Chris Alave had a game. Devin Veeley, seven receptions for
- 28:08Speaker 1: 69 yards. They had guys who could have a lot
- 28:13Speaker 1: of success against man-to-man coverage because it can be schemed
- 28:17Speaker 1: in a way that there's nothing the DB can do.
- 28:20Speaker 1: There's nothing the corner can do if you just keep
- 28:22Speaker 1: lining up in it again and again and again. there's
- 28:26Speaker 1: going to have to be a change there, Mitchell. And
- 28:27Speaker 1: if it's not changed by next week, Buffalo is going
- 28:30Speaker 1: to make it even harder.
- 28:32Speaker 2: You're dead on. I mean, this is a team last year,
- 28:35Speaker 2: you know, they were not very good against the run.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Today they were. And they were dominating in this first
- 28:41Speaker 2: half up 21 to nothing early in the second half.
- 28:44Speaker 2: And the Saints couldn't do anything. And all of a
- 28:46Speaker 2: sudden they just said, screw it. We're just going to
- 28:48Speaker 2: throw the ball every freaking time. And that they did.
- 28:51Speaker 2: And to your point, Chris Alave was everywhere, all over
- 28:54Speaker 2: the field. Tyler Schalk, gained a lot of my respect
- 28:57Speaker 2: this week. I think the Saints are true contenders in
- 29:00Speaker 2: this division, Richard. That's a takeaway I have from this game.
- 29:03Speaker 2: I think Detroit did not play their A game whatsoever,
- 29:06Speaker 2: but I think the Saints are going to be better
- 29:07Speaker 2: than people anticipate. I got the Saints winning the NFC
- 29:10Speaker 2: South after watching them in person today. Call it a
- 29:13Speaker 2: hot take, but that's just how I feel.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Football is back. And if you're getting ready for the season,
- 29:20Speaker 1: pull up to your local Lids. The exclusive 47 NFL
- 29:24Speaker 1: collection is available only in store at Lids. And this
- 29:29Speaker 1: gear is the gear you're going to need if you're
- 29:31Speaker 1: going all in all season.
- 29:33Speaker 2: No doubt about it. We're talking NFL graphic tees. The
- 29:37Speaker 2: iconic 47 hitch headrests. silhouette. Richard, you like this, man?
- 29:42Speaker 2: I love this. The Detroit Lions 47 hitch headwear I
- 29:46Speaker 2: got on. And fan gear that looks good on game day.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Monday morning and every day in between.
- 29:53Speaker 1: And listen, I know a little something about being all in.
- 29:56Speaker 1: The Legion of Boom energy. It was not casual. We
- 30:00Speaker 1: didn't walk on the field hoping people noticed us. We
- 30:03Speaker 1: set the tone. We brought the energy. We made sure
- 30:07Speaker 1: everybody knew exactly who they were dealing with.
- 30:10Speaker 2: That's how you should rep your team, Richard. Confidence. No apologies.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Whether you're hosting the crew, watching the family, tailgating before
- 30:18Speaker 2: the game, or sitting across from somebody wearing the wrong colors,
- 30:22Speaker 2: get to your local lids and rep your squad the
- 30:25Speaker 2: right way.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Football isn't just a Sunday thing. It's a rivalry. It's tradition.
- 30:30Speaker 2: It's pride.
- 30:32Speaker 1: It's who you are all week long. So don't wait
- 30:35Speaker 1: until kickoff to get ready. Pull up to Lids and
- 30:38Speaker 1: go all in, all season, only in store at Lids.
- 30:43Speaker 2: Richard, let's talk a little bit more about the NFC South.
- 30:47Speaker 2: Tampa Bay goes on the road against Cincinnati, and this
- 30:51Speaker 2: is a team I challenged you on. During our AFC breakdown.
- 30:56Speaker 2: I said the Cincinnati Bengals are going to surprise some folks.
- 31:00Speaker 2: I got them going all the way to the AFC
- 31:03Speaker 2: championship game. Pending a healthy Joe Burrow. And here we
- 31:07Speaker 2: were today. Cincinnati came out hot. They took control of
- 31:11Speaker 2: this game. And they ultimately won. 33-27. Richard, talk to
- 31:16Speaker 2: me about the Cincinnati Bengals. A lot of folks in
- 31:20Speaker 2: Cincinnati liked my take. They did not like your take,
- 31:23Speaker 2: but let's hear what you got to say about the Bengals.
- 31:28Speaker 1: Mitchell, you called it. You said they're improved and they
- 31:31Speaker 1: could win the AFC North. From the history, for the
- 31:37Speaker 1: history of the Cincinnati Bengals, at least over the last
- 31:39Speaker 1: two decades, defense has been an issue. And I know
- 31:42Speaker 1: they're like, oh man, we've invested so much in it.
- 31:44Speaker 1: We're so much different now. You don't get it. I
- 31:46Speaker 1: hear you, but I got to see it. And for
- 31:49Speaker 1: the first half of this game, We saw it. We
- 31:53Speaker 1: saw it. After giving up a field goal in the
- 31:55Speaker 1: first drive, the next three possessions forced a fumble. Baker Mayfield,
- 32:01Speaker 1: they forced a fumble on Baker Mayfield. They forced a
- 32:08Speaker 1: fumble on Bucky Irving. Then their offense scored, and they
- 32:14Speaker 1: forced another fumble on Baker Mayfield. They sacked him. They
- 32:18Speaker 1: harassed him all game long. They were phenomenal in this game.
- 32:22Speaker 1: early on Mitchell, early on. And that's a key point
- 32:27Speaker 1: because in the second half, it did not look the same.
- 32:30Speaker 1: It did not look the same. And they didn't give
- 32:31Speaker 1: up a ton of points. They didn't give up a
- 32:32Speaker 1: ton of points because Joe Burrow threw a, threw a
- 32:34Speaker 1: pick six. So we won't credit them to that. They
- 32:37Speaker 1: gave up 20 points in this game, which is solid,
- 32:40Speaker 1: which is solid in national football league. But again, when
- 32:44Speaker 1: it got down to, to, to crunch time, they were
- 32:47Speaker 1: able to stand up. The offense was able to score points,
- 32:50Speaker 1: big win for them. Uh, In Tampa Bay, a tough
- 32:53Speaker 1: place to go out there, especially early because it's hot,
- 32:56Speaker 1: it's humid, and get a win. So the Cincinnati Bengals
- 33:00Speaker 1: deserve a ton of credit. I mean, that defense was aggressive,
- 33:04Speaker 1: harassing Baker Mayfield all game. They sacked him four times.
- 33:10Speaker 1: They hit him a whole bunch of other times. So
- 33:13Speaker 1: there is something there. There is something to this defense.
- 33:17Speaker 1: And they got a tough game coming up next week
- 33:19Speaker 1: against the Houston Texans, a very tough defense. That's going
- 33:22Speaker 1: to put a lot of pressure on there. But so
- 33:25Speaker 1: does Todd Bowles. And that D-line, everything you heard in
- 33:29Speaker 1: the preseason was, oh, man, this D-line is going to
- 33:32Speaker 1: get after everybody. This D-line is going to handle people,
- 33:36Speaker 1: going to put pressure on. And Joe Burrow was only
- 33:38Speaker 1: sacked once in this game. It wasn't his best game.
- 33:41Speaker 1: It wasn't his worst game. He was effective. Due for 254,
- 33:45Speaker 1: one touchdown, had to pick six. We talked about earlier.
- 33:48Speaker 1: But Solid game for him. Really good game for the defense.
- 33:52Speaker 1: Really good game for the Cincinnati Bengals to start the
- 33:54Speaker 1: season off with a win. They've had seasons where they've
- 33:58Speaker 1: struggled all the way until November and then got hot late.
- 34:01Speaker 1: If they can start off with some wins, it may
- 34:03Speaker 1: be what you said, Mitchell. You may have been a prophet.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Richard, that train's still open, my friend. Feel free to
- 34:12Speaker 2: hop on board. I'm telling you, this Cincinnati Bengals team,
- 34:15Speaker 2: they're my dark horse this year. I got them winning
- 34:18Speaker 2: the AFC North, and I got them making a run
- 34:20Speaker 2: in this playoffs. Joe Burrow and co. Get it done
- 34:24Speaker 2: week one. Another huge test next week against the 0-1
- 34:28Speaker 2: Houston Texans. Hungry for a win. We shall see, my friend.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Another wild game. I mean, statistics just did not match
- 34:36Speaker 2: up in this game. The Minnesota Vikings take care of
- 34:40Speaker 2: business at home against division rival Green Bay and the Packers, 39-22.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Not what we expected. Carson Wentz leads the charge. Kyler
- 34:52Speaker 2: Murray goes out with a concussion. Carson Wentz comes in,
- 34:56Speaker 2: has a solid game. Three touchdown passes, 133 yards passing.
- 35:01Speaker 2: We saw the Justin Jefferson of old. He's got to
- 35:04Speaker 2: be loving this start to the season. 92 yards and
- 35:07Speaker 2: two touchdowns. Richard, the Minnesota Vikings get it done at home. Although,
- 35:13Speaker 2: statistically speaking, the Green Bay Packers look like they should
- 35:17Speaker 2: have won this game. What are your thoughts, my friend?
- 35:21Speaker 1: Insanity, Mitchell. Insanity. The Green Bay Packers were in full
- 35:24Speaker 1: control of this game, doing whatever they wanted. Jordan Love,
- 35:29Speaker 1: freaking all the sidearm passes, under pressure, under duress, getting
- 35:33Speaker 1: it done, seeming like they had started to figure out
- 35:37Speaker 1: Brian Flores. Now, mind you, he struggled consistently, historically, against
- 35:41Speaker 1: Brian Flores and Coach defenses, he usually has a few turnovers, two,
- 35:46Speaker 1: three interceptions, and they somehow, they win the game. Sometimes
- 35:50Speaker 1: they don't win the game. Sometimes, you know, it goes
- 35:52Speaker 1: back and forth, but usually he struggles against Brian Flores
- 35:55Speaker 1: and the exotic things they put out there. But this game,
- 35:58Speaker 1: it seemed like Jordan Love has finally matured and started
- 36:02Speaker 1: to figure this defense out. But not so fast, my friend,
- 36:07Speaker 1: because the second half adjustments by Brian Flores in this
- 36:11Speaker 1: defense are, were phenomenal. They started to get home running
- 36:15Speaker 1: much different pressures, flipping things, flipping a script. Jordan Love
- 36:20Speaker 1: had no room to operate, had no time in the pocket,
- 36:23Speaker 1: no time to process anything. They caused multiple turnovers in
- 36:27Speaker 1: the fourth quarter. They scored, I think it might have
- 36:30Speaker 1: been 29 unanswered, something crazy like that. It was at
- 36:34Speaker 1: least 22 in the fourth, 22 points in the fourth quarter.
- 36:38Speaker 1: just a dominant performance. And then you look at the
- 36:41Speaker 1: box score. You look at the numbers. It was 419
- 36:45Speaker 1: yards overall for the Packers to, I think, 200. Let
- 36:51Speaker 1: me make sure I get it right.
- 36:54Speaker 2: 239, Richard.
- 36:56Speaker 1: 239 for the Minnesota Vikings. And somehow the Minnesota Vikings
- 37:00Speaker 1: outpossessed the Green Bay Packers in this game. And you're like,
- 37:05Speaker 1: It just doesn't make sense. If you look at this
- 37:07Speaker 1: box score and the quarterback throws for 387 and two touchdowns,
- 37:12Speaker 1: and you say they lost by 17, and the other
- 37:15Speaker 1: quarterback was 12 for 19, 133, but he had three touchdowns.
- 37:19Speaker 1: Carson Wentz deserves a ton of credit to come in
- 37:21Speaker 1: there in a difficult situation, in a difficult environment, and
- 37:25Speaker 1: just get it done. Get the ball to his playmaker,
- 37:28Speaker 1: one of the best players in the league, and Justin Jefferson,
- 37:31Speaker 1: who had eight catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns.
- 37:34Speaker 1: Just make it happen. And that's all he did. That's
- 37:37Speaker 1: what veterans do. And I bet people are wondering, where's J.J. McCarthy?
- 37:43Speaker 1: I thought he was. Now, listen, but we're not going
- 37:50Speaker 1: to go there, Minnesota. I'm going to give y'all your
- 37:53Speaker 1: just due because Carson Wentz came in there and did
- 37:57Speaker 1: the job, got the job done. They won this game,
- 38:01Speaker 1: scored 39 points in the game. Held Green Bay to
- 38:05Speaker 1: 22 points. I think it was only three points after
- 38:06Speaker 1: the half. Let me double check because I don't want
- 38:09Speaker 1: to misspeak. Yeah, they held the Green Bay Packers to
- 38:14Speaker 1: only a field goal after the half. It's fantastic adjustments.
- 38:18Speaker 1: Brian Flores should be a head coach somewhere. Like there
- 38:21Speaker 1: are too many guys getting opportunities now. without the resume
- 38:25Speaker 1: of things he's done. And I know he struggled in Miami,
- 38:27Speaker 1: but who hasn't struggled in Miami?
- 38:29Speaker 2: Where does, where does he, we talk about Brian Flores
- 38:32Speaker 2: all the time. This guy is a mastermind defensively. Where
- 38:35Speaker 2: does he stack on your hierarchy of defensive masterminds in
- 38:39Speaker 2: this NFL? I mean, is he D coordinator one in the,
- 38:44Speaker 2: in the league at this point, or what is your
- 38:46Speaker 2: thought process when it comes to block Brian Flores?
- 38:50Speaker 1: It's, it's, It's tough because we can't just forget what
- 38:54Speaker 1: Spags has done over the last couple years, and we
- 38:56Speaker 1: can't forget what Vic Fangio has done because we're feeling
- 39:00Speaker 1: hot in the cot right now. There are some guys
- 39:03Speaker 1: that have called some really fantastic defenses. Mike McDonald out there,
- 39:07Speaker 1: he's a head coach, so we're not going to call
- 39:08Speaker 1: him a coordinator for all intents and purposes. D'Amico Ryan
- 39:13Speaker 1: and what they're doing in Houston last year, they played
- 39:17Speaker 1: some great defense. Vance Joseph out there in Denver. They
- 39:20Speaker 1: played some great defense, so we're not going to get
- 39:22Speaker 1: hot in the cotton and start forgetting about all the
- 39:25Speaker 1: things we know. But he's definitely up there. I mean,
- 39:27Speaker 1: he's top two, top three, and he should be a
- 39:29Speaker 1: head coach. And I know people are going to go
- 39:32Speaker 1: back to his stint in Miami, but you're not in
- 39:35Speaker 1: control of all the circumstances when you're a head coach
- 39:38Speaker 1: like that. Hey, they drafted Tua Tungavailoa. He tried to
- 39:40Speaker 1: make it happen. Ryan Fitzpatrick was actually having a really
- 39:43Speaker 1: great year. But the ownership group and the front office
- 39:46Speaker 1: forced him to play Tua Tungavailoa before he's ready. in
- 39:49Speaker 1: a season where they were actually playing great football, the defense.
- 39:53Speaker 1: I want to say one game, Tua's first start against
- 39:56Speaker 1: the Rams, he had like 70 yards, and everybody else scored.
- 40:01Speaker 1: They had like two pick sixes, a punt return, touchdown.
- 40:04Speaker 1: I don't even know if they had an offensive touchdown,
- 40:06Speaker 1: and they won by 20. And so I thought Brian
- 40:09Speaker 1: Flores got scapegoated, and that's why the whole lawsuit and
- 40:13Speaker 1: all that went in there. But I think that lawsuit
- 40:15Speaker 1: and everything and the collusion– is why he isn't getting
- 40:19Speaker 1: a head coaching job now, but he deserves one. He's
- 40:21Speaker 1: one of the most creative minds defensively, one of the
- 40:24Speaker 1: most aggressive, and I think if he got another opportunity,
- 40:27Speaker 1: it would go well. Maybe Mike McDonald and the success
- 40:29Speaker 1: he's having in Seattle will lead to more teams saying, hey,
- 40:35Speaker 1: maybe a defensive coach can get it done, and maybe
- 40:38Speaker 1: that's the difference we need when you run into some
- 40:40Speaker 1: of these offensive geniuses. Like maybe sometimes you need a
- 40:43Speaker 1: guy who's just going to, create a defense that's willing
- 40:46Speaker 1: to hit everybody in the mouth. And that's what the
- 40:48Speaker 1: Minnesota Vikings did in the second half.
- 40:50Speaker 2: You love to see it as a Minnesota Viking fan.
- 40:53Speaker 2: Impressive week one for the Vikings coming off victorious against
- 40:58Speaker 2: division foe Green Bay. Richard, shocker in L.A. The Arizona Cardinals,
- 41:06Speaker 2: the lowly Arizona Cardinals, who, I mean, you're not the
- 41:10Speaker 2: only one that wrote them off, Richard.
- 41:12Speaker 1: I wrote them off.
- 41:13Speaker 2: I think everyone in national media wrote them off. This
- 41:17Speaker 2: year's Arizona Cardinals team was not going to be very good.
- 41:20Speaker 2: Not so fast. Jacoby Brissett, 277 yards passing, a touchdown.
- 41:26Speaker 2: Your boy, Kendrick Bourne, eight catches for 75 yards. I
- 41:31Speaker 2: don't know what happened to Marvin Harrison Jr., apparently the
- 41:33Speaker 2: top five pick. I don't know what's going on. One
- 41:37Speaker 2: catch for 33 yards. They still get the win. Michael Wilson.
- 41:41Speaker 2: Stanford Cardinal, go tree. Five receptions, 56 yards. They come
- 41:47Speaker 2: out with a road victory against the L.A. Chargers, a
- 41:52Speaker 2: team that has been hyped up. Mike McDaniel goes to
- 41:55Speaker 2: the Chargers. Here's a team with his joggers and his
- 41:58Speaker 2: sunglasses and whatever else he's bringing to L.A. Everyone thought
- 42:03Speaker 2: they were going to be the greatest show on turf.
- 42:06Speaker 2: Not so fast. Arizona takes care of the L.A. Chargers. Richard,
- 42:11Speaker 2: we might have a four-man race in this NFC West.
- 42:15Speaker 2: I mean, you wrote them off. Do we have something
- 42:18Speaker 2: to worry about here in the NFC West with the
- 42:19Speaker 2: Arizona Cardinals? I don't know. I don't know.
- 42:24Speaker 1: I was on McAfee's show, and they started to talk about,
- 42:28Speaker 1: you know, a four-team, you know, if Arizona could pull
- 42:31Speaker 1: it together, four teams in one division making the playoffs.
- 42:34Speaker 1: I was like, oh, that's crazy. And Arizona just picked
- 42:36Speaker 1: top five in the draft, like, Don't have a new coach.
- 42:39Speaker 1: A lot of things to make up. But give him
- 42:42Speaker 1: a ton of credit. Jacoby Brissett. Jacoby Brissett, like, never
- 42:46Speaker 1: gets enough credit. Like, always been solid to good. Like, and.
- 42:52Speaker 2: You know who he reminds me of, Richard, before you continue?
- 42:55Speaker 2: Your co-worker.
- 42:57Speaker 1: Fitzmagic. I mean, I think he's... 100%.
- 43:00Speaker 2: He reminds me of Fitzmagic in that way that he
- 43:03Speaker 2: just inserts himself and immediately makes the team competitive. I mean,
- 43:07Speaker 2: he's unheralded. That's just how I feel. Pause.
- 43:11Speaker 1: What does he do? Okay, thank you. Thank you. Yikes.
- 43:13Speaker 1: But Jacoby Brissett, 27-37 for a 277, one touchdown, 103
- 43:14Speaker 1: passer rating. Trey McBride, of course, considered one of the
- 43:17Speaker 1: best tight ends in the National Football League, gets 13 targets.
- 43:31Speaker 1: Nine catches for 95 yards to one touchdown. And our
- 43:34Speaker 1: guy KB. KB said, hey, y'all got all these high
- 43:37Speaker 1: draft picks. Y'all got all these guys making all this money.
- 43:40Speaker 1: Marvin Harrison, Michael Wilson, you just got the bag. I
- 43:43Speaker 1: hear you. But you keep throwing it to KB and
- 43:47Speaker 1: we gonna see. And we are gonna see. They get
- 43:51Speaker 1: a win, a big win in LA against a Chargers
- 43:54Speaker 1: team that we expected to be competitive. I expected to
- 43:57Speaker 1: be competitive. And I thought that the combination of Mike
- 44:01Speaker 1: McDaniel and Justin Herbert would thrive. And maybe it will. Maybe,
- 44:07Speaker 1: you know, after a while, I think Justin is going
- 44:09Speaker 1: to have to get used to this scheme and throwing
- 44:13Speaker 1: in tight windows and anticipation and all the things that
- 44:17Speaker 1: you got to do that Brock Purdy and Matthew Stafford
- 44:21Speaker 1: and the guys that play in this West Coast scheme,
- 44:24Speaker 1: that Kyle Shanahan, Mike McVay, or Mike McVay, Mike McDaniel,
- 44:29Speaker 1: Sean McVay, all these guys run where it's condensed. They
- 44:32Speaker 1: bring in everything in and they're creating really cool scenarios,
- 44:36Speaker 1: but the windows are tight. And sometimes as a quarterback,
- 44:39Speaker 1: you want to, you want to have a bigger window.
- 44:42Speaker 1: You want to feel like it's a safer throw. And
- 44:44Speaker 1: some of these girls aren't safe. Some, some of these
- 44:46Speaker 1: girls you're throwing to a spot and you're just trusting
- 44:50Speaker 1: that the receiver is going to be there. Um, But
- 44:52Speaker 1: Mike LaFleur has these guys playing with confidence, and sometimes
- 44:56Speaker 1: when you don't have a shot, when the expectations are low,
- 44:59Speaker 1: and you got a guy who most people think is
- 45:02Speaker 1: a bridge quarterback in Jacoby Brissett, and Jacoby Brissett said
- 45:05Speaker 1: this offseason, pay me. Pay me, please. Like, you guys
- 45:09Speaker 1: are going to get high-level play from me. I'm going
- 45:11Speaker 1: to come in here and win you games. I came
- 45:12Speaker 1: in here and played at a decently high level last
- 45:15Speaker 1: year when there wasn't a ton of talent in the building,
- 45:17Speaker 1: and there's no reward because people expect them to, to
- 45:21Speaker 1: go draft somebody else and go draft his replacement. But
- 45:24Speaker 1: Jacoby Brissett is saying, not so fast, my friend. You
- 45:27Speaker 1: aren't going to just draft my replacement. I'm going to
- 45:30Speaker 1: make sure that draft pick isn't as high as you
- 45:32Speaker 1: need it to be to replace me. And I can
- 45:35Speaker 1: respect that. They got a tough game against the Seattle
- 45:38Speaker 1: Seahawks next week. But, again, Drew Locke is in there.
- 45:42Speaker 1: It's a lot different than Sam Darnold being in there.
- 45:44Speaker 1: If the Arizona Cardinals somehow find a way to upset
- 45:49Speaker 1: the Seattle Seahawks, then we're going to be, Mitchell, we're
- 45:54Speaker 1: going to be singing a much different tune about this team.
- 45:56Speaker 1: It's not going to be just a feel-good, you know,
- 45:59Speaker 1: underdog story anymore. It's going to be some serious talks.
- 46:02Speaker 2: Well, listen, I mean, Jacoby Brissett came in last year
- 46:05Speaker 2: when the season was over, essentially, and kept this team competitive.
- 46:09Speaker 2: I mean, bottom line, they were a competitive team, and
- 46:12Speaker 2: they go out and spend a top five pick on
- 46:15Speaker 2: on a running back, on a Notre Dame, Jeremiah Love,
- 46:18Speaker 2: you know, and we'll see how that pans out for them.
- 46:20Speaker 2: I mean, he had a touchdown today. They've got offensive weapons.
- 46:24Speaker 2: They've got one of the best tight ends in football,
- 46:25Speaker 2: if not the best tight end in football in training pride.
- 46:28Speaker 2: I mean, if we see anything on a Marvin Harrison Jr.,
- 46:32Speaker 2: maybe this team's got something here, Richard.
- 46:34Speaker 1: I don't know. And this is against a Chargers defense
- 46:38Speaker 1: that's been respectable. This Chargers defense has been good. They've
- 46:41Speaker 1: been good. You can't just say this is just a
- 46:45Speaker 1: throwaway defense, a throwaway team. And they kept the Chargers defense.
- 46:51Speaker 1: They held them to one sack in a game. One
- 46:53Speaker 1: sack in a game, and the Cardinals had three sacks
- 46:54Speaker 1: and two takeaways. They did not give the football away. Mitchell,
- 46:59Speaker 1: when you don't turn the ball over, you give yourself
- 47:01Speaker 1: a chance. And if that's the kind of football Jacoby
- 47:03Speaker 1: Brissett is going to play, Trey McBride, Kendrick Bourne, and
- 47:07Speaker 1: you didn't get a ton from Michael Wilson and Marvin
- 47:09Speaker 1: Harrison Jr. I mean, he had five catches for 56 yards,
- 47:14Speaker 1: Michael Wilson did, but you expect bigger numbers in this offense.
- 47:18Speaker 1: You didn't expect Kendrick Bourne to be the second leading
- 47:22Speaker 1: receiver behind Trey McBride with eight targets in the game,
- 47:27Speaker 1: but sometimes the games pan out that way, and a
- 47:31Speaker 1: team that is just playing to play and not worried
- 47:34Speaker 1: about who gets the ball not worried about who gets
- 47:36Speaker 1: the credit not worried about anything but the process is
- 47:39Speaker 1: a dangerous team and that's what the arizona cardinals look.
- 47:41Speaker 2: Like no question about it one thing i love about
- 47:45Speaker 2: the summer mitchell is how easy everything feels the days
- 47:47Speaker 2: are a little more relaxed and i find myself reaching
- 47:50Speaker 2: for the same comfortable go anywhere pieces again and again
- 47:55Speaker 2: that's why i keep coming back to quince I tell
- 47:58Speaker 2: you what, Richard, I've spoke about it a number of times.
- 48:00Speaker 2: I got these cashmere joggers, right? Black, beautiful. They're perfect, man.
- 48:06Speaker 2: Summer nights, chilling out, you know, on the patio. I
- 48:09Speaker 2: throw them on. I've enjoyed them so much. And it's

- 48:45Speaker 2: We're going to rip through these last handful of games.
- 48:47Speaker 2: I just want your quick thoughts. I mean, the Philadelphia Eagles,
- 48:53Speaker 2: playing division foe, the Washington Commanders. This game came down
- 48:57Speaker 2: to the wire. The Washington Commanders ultimately fail on a
- 49:00Speaker 2: two-point conversion to end the game, or late in the game,
- 49:03Speaker 2: and Philly comes out victorious. Your thoughts on the Philly victory?
- 49:08Speaker 1: I mean, a win is a win in the National
- 49:10Speaker 1: Football League, and you'll take it. The Commanders... We're trying
- 49:13Speaker 1: to get cute and do the little shuffle pass. They
- 49:15Speaker 1: could have won this game easily, but still, if you're
- 49:19Speaker 1: a Philly fan, you're, you're kind of concerned because this offense, again,
- 49:22Speaker 1: looks stagnant at times. It looked like, hey, there was
- 49:25Speaker 1: no direction. They got to figure it out. I think
- 49:27Speaker 1: Makai Lemon might have ended the game with negative yardage.
- 49:30Speaker 1: I think he had five catches for negative three yardage.
- 49:34Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Negative three yards. I'm serious, Mitchell.
- 49:36Speaker 1: That's what happened.
- 49:38Speaker 2: All right. Your boy. Robert Sala, I love the guy.
- 49:43Speaker 2: He's a Dearborn native from Michigan. He's from the Mitten, guys. Oh, boy.
- 49:50Speaker 2: This is a Robert Sala revenge game against his foe,
- 49:54Speaker 2: the New York Jets. Geno Smith gets the better of
- 49:58Speaker 2: Robert Sala, 23-10. Oh, boy. What do we got here
- 50:03Speaker 2: in Tennessee? It just does not look good in Tennessee.
- 50:09Speaker 2: What do we got to say here, Richard?
- 50:11Speaker 1: Well, it's starting to become an is Cam Ward the
- 50:14Speaker 1: guy kind of conversation. I think Brian Daybold said he
- 50:17Speaker 1: was so excited to work with Cam Ward and all
- 50:19Speaker 1: these things. It's starting to look like, hey, Cam Ward
- 50:22Speaker 1: may not be who they thought he was. And, you know,
- 50:25Speaker 1: maybe this changes and he changes that rhetoric. But right
- 50:27Speaker 1: now it's not looking good. Good for Geno. Geno! I
- 50:31Speaker 1: just love it. I love to see Geno. And I
- 50:33Speaker 1: love to see the New York Jets taking a risk
- 50:35Speaker 1: to say, hey, we're going to sign Geno back and
- 50:37Speaker 1: give him a chance to redeem himself. And he goes
- 50:39Speaker 1: out there and wins them. Their first opener since 2015.
- 50:43Speaker 1: Great job, Geno. Looked in command, smooth. The Jets look
- 50:48Speaker 1: like a completely different team than they were last year.
- 50:51Speaker 1: And competent quarterback play can do that for you.
- 50:55Speaker 2: How about those boys down in Duval? Liam Cohen and co.
- 51:00Speaker 2: The Jacksonville Jaguars take care of business, Richard. Absent the
- 51:06Speaker 2: Chicago Bears and their offensive showing, this might have been
- 51:09Speaker 2: the best offensive showing of the game. Trevor Lawrence, I
- 51:12Speaker 2: know you've been a harsh critic of Trevor Lawrence over
- 51:15Speaker 2: the years, but he's come into his own this second
- 51:18Speaker 2: half of last season into this season. Richard, the Jags
- 51:22Speaker 2: get it done. Five sacks, two takeaways, manhandle the Cleveland Browns.
- 51:27Speaker 2: Your thoughts on this Jaguars team?
- 51:29Speaker 1: I like them. Yeah, I mean, you got to like them.
- 51:33Speaker 1: You got to like them. They're fun to watch. And
- 51:35Speaker 1: we thought this could be one of the best receiving
- 51:37Speaker 1: cores in the National Football League. But sometimes, again, we
- 51:40Speaker 1: talk all this on paper stuff, but they are proving it.
- 51:42Speaker 1: Parker Washington picked up where he left off last season,
- 51:46Speaker 1: five for 83 with a touchdown. Jacoby Myers, this is
- 51:50Speaker 1: why they paid him, because he was dominant from the
- 51:53Speaker 1: moment he got there. He was a difference maker. He
- 51:55Speaker 1: was a difference maker in this game. He only had
- 51:57Speaker 1: two catches for 40 yards, but he had a 32-yard touchdown.
- 52:00Speaker 1: looked really good. Trevor Lawrence, 18-23, 245, and four touchdowns
- 52:05Speaker 1: in the game. Again, this is a Browns team, and
- 52:08Speaker 1: I know everybody talks about the Browns. The only time
- 52:10Speaker 1: they get to the Super Bowl is when everybody goes
- 52:13Speaker 1: to the bathroom, but they are usually a good defensive team,
- 52:17Speaker 1: and I thought they should have signed Jim Swartz. I
- 52:21Speaker 1: think they should have signed Swartz as the head coach
- 52:24Speaker 1: of this team, and I said that. I said they
- 52:25Speaker 1: would be better to just accept that he's going to
- 52:28Speaker 1: be the coach and figure out an offense, but everybody,
- 52:30Speaker 1: offensive guy, offensive guy. I don't think that's the answer.
- 52:33Speaker 1: And obviously Deshaun Watson didn't look great in this game,
- 52:36Speaker 1: but the one thing they used to be able to
- 52:38Speaker 1: hold their hat on was defense and Trevor Lawrence shredded
- 52:41Speaker 1: this defense. And then on the flip side, the Jaguars
- 52:44Speaker 1: defense is so fun to watch. I mean, you, you
- 52:47Speaker 1: got everybody playing great. You let me, let me go
- 52:50Speaker 1: down the list of people who got sacks in this game. Um,
- 52:53Speaker 1: Josh Heinz Allen had one and a half, uh, Trevon
- 52:56Speaker 1: Walker had one and a half. Branson Combs had one.
- 53:01Speaker 1: Ventrell Miller had one. And they were all over the place, Mitchell.
- 53:05Speaker 1: They were swarming. And then our guy, Alua Khan, got
- 53:10Speaker 1: him another interception. Again, this opportunistic defense. It's been this way.
- 53:17Speaker 1: Sometimes you think, oh, man, the ball bounces your way
- 53:19Speaker 1: some years, and sometimes it doesn't. But it just continues
- 53:22Speaker 1: to happen for the Jacksonville Jaguars. So it's not luck.
- 53:26Speaker 1: This is talent. This is a great defense. And they've
- 53:29Speaker 1: been consistently taking the ball away. They've been consistently getting
- 53:32Speaker 1: to the quarterback. And they spent a lot of high
- 53:35Speaker 1: draft picks on this defensive line. So it's no surprise
- 53:38Speaker 1: that they're starting to become what you expected. But I
- 53:41Speaker 1: love to see it. They're going to be a fun
- 53:42Speaker 1: and dangerous team to watch.
- 53:44Speaker 2: No question. And I know we're supposed to go quick
- 53:46Speaker 2: through these games. But I got to talk to you
- 53:48Speaker 2: real quick about the quarterback situation in Cleveland. How short
- 53:51Speaker 2: of a leash do you think Deshaun Watson is on?
- 53:54Speaker 1: Because.
- 53:54Speaker 2: Listen, I got to believe the fan base is going
- 53:57Speaker 2: to start squawking and wanting Shador Sanders in there at
- 53:59Speaker 2: some point. This Cleveland team did not have high hopes
- 54:03Speaker 2: coming into the season, but a week one showing against Jacksonville,
- 54:07Speaker 2: losing by 24 on the road. I mean, the future
- 54:11Speaker 2: doesn't look very bright for them. At what point do
- 54:13Speaker 2: you turn to Shador Sanders?
- 54:17Speaker 1: I don't know, Mitchell. I don't know. This is such
- 54:18Speaker 1: an unprecedented situation, and Todd Munkin has got his work
- 54:22Speaker 1: cut out for him because– You're only going to go
- 54:24Speaker 1: as far as the quarterback takes you. And if you
- 54:26Speaker 1: can't get in and out of the huddle, if you
- 54:28Speaker 1: keep having delay of games, like the things that take
- 54:30Speaker 1: no talent, you've got to be the master of. The
- 54:32Speaker 1: game is too hard in general to have those kind
- 54:35Speaker 1: of mistakes. So, again, he's making $ 50 million this year.
- 54:38Speaker 1: So I don't think it's going to be a super
- 54:40Speaker 1: short leash. I think once the fans start making noise
- 54:42Speaker 1: and if they get to booing him again consistently, they're
- 54:45Speaker 1: going to have to do something.
- 54:46Speaker 2: No question. A team that really impressed today, the Baltimore Ravens.
- 54:50Speaker 2: Go on the road, take your Indianapolis.
- 54:54Speaker 1: 41-23.
- 54:54Speaker 2: I don't know what it is with these scores, Richard.
- 54:57Speaker 2: There had to be more points scored in the history
- 55:00Speaker 2: of Week 1 in the NFL today. I'm sure the
- 55:02Speaker 2: stats are somewhere. But another absolute shootout here. 41 points
- 55:07Speaker 2: put on the board by the Baltimore Ravens. Zay Flowers
- 55:11Speaker 2: goes off. He gets hurt late in this game. But
- 55:14Speaker 2: Derrick Henry with three touchdowns. How impressed were you with
- 55:17Speaker 2: this win by Baltimore?
- 55:20Speaker 1: I mean, offensively, you already know what you're going to
- 55:22Speaker 1: get from Baltimore. Lamar Jackson throws for. 324. Derrick Henry
- 55:26Speaker 1: runs 24 carries for. 144 and three touchdowns. I mean,
- 55:30Speaker 1: you talk about an ageless wonder. I mean, there are
- 55:34Speaker 1: seven wonders of the world. Derrick Henry is working on
- 55:36Speaker 1: him being the eighth, Mitchell. And it's been that way
- 55:39Speaker 1: for a really long time. If they can continue to
- 55:41Speaker 1: lean on that and continue to expect that. And, again,
- 55:45Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson has been consistent. But this is eight flowers.
- 55:48Speaker 1: Zay Flowers was trying to show people, hey, I'm worth
- 55:50Speaker 1: the money because there were question marks. People were like,
- 55:52Speaker 1: Zay Flowers got that much? But this hamstring injury is
- 55:57Speaker 1: what the concern is because, hey, you're out there having
- 56:00Speaker 1: a fantastic game. Zay Flowers, five for 150 and a touchdown.
- 56:03Speaker 1: That 54-yard touchdown looked incredible. But now you're out with
- 56:07Speaker 1: a hamstring. The best ability in this National Football League
- 56:10Speaker 1: is availability. And If you can't be available, you can't
- 56:13Speaker 1: be that great. And so hopefully he's able to recover.
- 56:17Speaker 1: Hopefully it's not that serious, but they need Zay Flowers
- 56:21Speaker 1: back to make this passing game as explosive as it
- 56:24Speaker 1: needs to be. You know, because outside of him, Mark
- 56:28Speaker 1: Andrews had four catches. Chris Moore had one catch for
- 56:32Speaker 1: 53 yards. Like there's not a ton of options. There's
- 56:37Speaker 1: not a ton of weapons outside of Zay Flowers. So
- 56:39Speaker 1: when he's gone, it makes the game really difficult. When
- 56:42Speaker 1: he's available, it forces the defense to back up. Then
- 56:47Speaker 1: you Derrick Henry. And if you step up and you
- 56:49Speaker 1: want to load the box and stop Derrick Henry, then
- 56:51Speaker 1: we'll bomb you with Zay Flowers or we'll bomb you
- 56:54Speaker 1: with Chris Moore like they did in this game. But
- 56:57Speaker 1: I just, I'm concerned.
- 57:00Speaker 2: And how about that eighth wonder of the world? Derrick
- 57:03Speaker 2: Henry passes Marcus Allen for third all-time in Russian TDs
- 57:07Speaker 2: in the NFL. it's an impressive showcase of his ability
- 57:11Speaker 2: and his longevity in this league. Derrick Henry, he's on
- 57:15Speaker 2: his way for that gold jacket, Richard. I got to
- 57:18Speaker 2: believe it. I mean, are we looking at a future
- 57:19Speaker 2: Hall of Famer with the statistics he's put on the
- 57:22Speaker 2: board here?
- 57:23Speaker 1: No question about it. I mean, I would guess everybody
- 57:26Speaker 1: else on that list of all-time rushing touchdowns has gold jackets,
- 57:30Speaker 1: and he's been dominant for more than a decade. I mean,
- 57:34Speaker 1: you start to talk about the shelf life of running
- 57:37Speaker 1: back's And he should have been hitting that shelf life.
- 57:40Speaker 1: And that's why people didn't want to sign him when
- 57:42Speaker 1: Tennessee was looking to offload him or when he was
- 57:46Speaker 1: leaving Tennessee because they didn't know. You know, it's like
- 57:50Speaker 1: history tells you that a running back should be falling
- 57:52Speaker 1: off a cliff at some point. But Derrick Henry is
- 57:55Speaker 1: a testament to some guys are just built different. And
- 57:58Speaker 1: everybody knew that when he was at Alabama, and they
- 58:02Speaker 1: knew that before he was at Alabama. Whatever he's built of,
- 58:05Speaker 1: they're going to study and they're going to replicate. When
- 58:07Speaker 1: they start making clones, Derrick Henry's DNA, Calvin Johnson's DNA,
- 58:12Speaker 1: there's a couple guys, Deion Sanders' DNA, they're going to
- 58:16Speaker 1: be in that mixture, Mitchell, when they start to clone
- 58:19Speaker 1: people and start to make super people because that man
- 58:23Speaker 1: was made of stuff other people aren't made of.
- 58:26Speaker 2: No question about it. And finally, Richard, as we conclude this,
- 58:30Speaker 2: what should be called a 15-minute drill. I know we
- 58:33Speaker 2: called it a two-minute drill, but it's the 15-minute drill
- 58:38Speaker 2: here at the Richard Sherman Podcast. The Pittsburgh Steelers take
- 58:43Speaker 2: care of the Atlanta Falcons. Aaron Rodgers just chose to
- 58:46Speaker 2: air all of his dirty laundry prior to this game
- 58:49Speaker 2: in an interview. God bless him. Aaron Rodgers takes care
- 58:53Speaker 2: of business. You know what, I mean, listen, this team,
- 58:56Speaker 2: I feel like another year under Aaron Rodgers. They had
- 58:59Speaker 2: Michael Pittman Jr., who I think is a great safety
- 59:02Speaker 2: blanket for Aaron Rodgers, next to DK Metcalf. Jalen Warren,
- 59:07Speaker 2: you bring in Rico Dowdle, who had a fantastic season.
- 59:10Speaker 2: year last year with the Panthers I like this Pittsburgh
- 59:13Speaker 2: team and ultimately they take down Atlanta yeah Cooper Rush
- 59:17Speaker 2: is at the helm for them right now which is
- 59:20Speaker 2: I'm puzzled as to why he started I I guess
- 59:24Speaker 2: I'll leave that up to you Richard but The Pittsburgh
- 59:27Speaker 2: Steelers take care of business. Your thoughts on this Pittsburgh
- 59:30Speaker 2: Steelers team and this win against Cooper Rush and the
- 59:32Speaker 2: Atlanta Falcons.
- 59:34Speaker 1: Well, first off, the Atlanta Falcons are in a spiral.
- 59:39Speaker 1: And just to start the season, you talk about a
- 59:42Speaker 1: battle between Tua Tunga-Vailoa and Michael Penix all training camp
- 59:47Speaker 1: and all season long only to learn that Cooper Rush
- 59:50Speaker 1: is going to be your day one starter. I mean, yikes.
- 59:55Speaker 1: It's a lot of things that make me scratch my head,
- 59:57Speaker 1: but I'd scratch my scalp off my head for that one.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: But Aaron Rodgers continues to play solid. I think this
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: is going to be a defensive team in Pittsburgh. They
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: usually are when they have great success. It's because their
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: defense is playing well. They had four sacks, two takeaways.
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: T.J.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: Watt had a T.J. Watt kind of day, two sacks,
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: an interception, a pick six, like, Two quarterback hits, two
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: quarterback hurries, just a dominant performance by him. He scored
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: more than a third of their– or about a third
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: of their points. And when their defense is playing at
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: that level, it's all about the offense just kind of
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: staying the course, manage the game. And I think Aaron
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: Rodgers can get that done at this point in his career,
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: at this point where he is. I think Mike McCarthy,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: a guy who knows Aaron Rodgers about as well as
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: anybody in the National Football League, understands. They understand each other.
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: They understand– They've won big games before. They've been in
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: big games. They've won and lost a lot of games
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: together in the past. I think they have a different
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: kind of rapport, and I think that's going to benefit
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: the Pittsburgh Steelers later on down the line. This is
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: a big win for them. Obviously, an opponent that has
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: its own set of issues, but showed some promise at
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: points last year, especially late in the year. A win
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: is a win in this league, and you appreciate them.
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: No question. And next week, hey, the Patriots fresh off
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: a loss against the Seattle Seahawks are going to be
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: playing the Pittsburgh Steelers. That's a game to watch, Richard.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: I mean, that's a lot's on the line. I know
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: it's early in the season, but for the Pats to
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: start 0-2 potentially, that's a big storyline there. Richard, we
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: conclude week one, and we're back with a vengeance on

- 1:02:27Speaker 2: Unless you're the Tennessee Titans, Richard. Unless you're the Tennessee Titans.
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: Unless you're the Tennessee Titans. There wasn't a lot of
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: hope out there. It's probably over for them. Yep.
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: It's tough. Not my guy, Salah. Not my guy, Salah.
