- 0:33Hamster with a blunt. Pen knife for doing quicker
- 0:35quicker. Quicker prepare the timeless
- 0:38commentary. Welcome back to the hamster
- 0:41world. Blunt pen knife, the Internet's
- 0:44number one Doctor Who commentary podcast.
- 0:46Until someone starts another one.
- 0:49Join me me is mail in Ford. Fellow Mail in Ford.
- 0:55Yes, hello. The cliche around me is that I
- 0:59always depart with a scream. So Speaking of awful departures,
- 1:09we've just had the cliffhanger for Part 1 a time.
- 1:14Determined was, you know, in tinsel terms, very scary.
- 1:18Yes, I suppose we're now going to get to part 2A timeless,
- 1:24which is scary in its own sort of you me quite not always
- 1:28positive when you first watched oh this game season 2010.
- 1:35So when you first watched your stories, what did you watch?
- 1:39Any of them in order or they the.
- 1:42Videos. They were literally coming out
- 1:45so randomly. This is why I can't understand
- 1:48people that just binge it on the iPad in order because my
- 1:52experience of it was putting together a big jigsaw all out of
- 1:55orders and time Dash was one of the last VHSS.
- 1:58Well, who's why? Why would be deprived?
- 2:03Yeah, but Revenge of the Sidemen was the 1st.
- 2:05I mean, there were some odd choices.
- 2:08Yeah, I mean, that's at least, you know, Tom and and Malaysian
- 2:13and Harry. So you may say it's more
- 2:16familiar with all the elements from the show's heyday.
- 2:23When So we've done a little bit as well about Joe Graun, who
- 2:28didn't really mention much in Part 1.
- 2:32We've seen the Locket that has yeah publicity still of Katie
- 2:38Marion and they are a lock of Joe Grand's hair for some reason
- 2:44was in the Locket. I mean, she did have a habit,
- 2:46you know, fall in love with inhabitants on planets.
- 2:50So. Maybe she just went oh to.
- 2:51Remember Me by Here's a Locket and a lock of my hair.
- 2:57What? When you watch Time Lash for the
- 3:00first time, were you aware that this was an invention for this
- 3:05story, or were you thinking of Great No.
- 3:08Oh, OK. No, because because I had
- 3:10absolutely studied the programme guide in depth, so I knew about
- 3:14every Doctor Who story. So I kind of spoiled myself
- 3:17really. Why did you think this was a a
- 3:19sequel to an old story? Yeah, well, I don't think I'd
- 3:23watched every John Pedro story by the time I've watched this,
- 3:27so I probably just assumed that that this was coming somewhere.
- 3:33I don't know where or why or how, but so this is the Third
- 3:40Doctor, Joe Grant as opposed to, you know, it was originally
- 3:44meant to be obviously Hartnell and Ian, Barbara and Susan,
- 3:49which makes sense because we've obviously had Totters Lane in in
- 3:56South Sidemen and we've obviously had, you know, a lot
- 4:01of elements from the past throughout most of the season.
- 4:06And obviously that fits with the Paul Barrow line that we
- 4:09mentioned about. Oh, there's only one of you this
- 4:11time, you know, which doesn't add up.
- 4:16Why? Why do you Would you have rather
- 4:20it been Hartnell, Ian, Barbara and Susan, for whatever it's
- 4:24worth, or are you happy with it? I know they tried to sort of
- 4:28shove the entire universe in that corner of Lime Grove in the
- 4:3160s, but I refuse to believe that, you know that fabulous
- 4:35first team would ever visit anywhere as drab and as
- 4:39pointless as Carl fell. Well, yeah, I know.
- 4:42I mean, it's funny that we've just had the 2nd Doctor and
- 4:47Jamie if you think maybe this is, this is an environment more
- 4:53suited to them. Obviously we mentioned the
- 4:55Crotons as an earlier example because it is a Robert Holmes
- 4:59script. Maybe this could have sat in
- 5:03season. I mean, I'm sure we could have
- 5:06definitely played in season 5. You could absolutely imagine
- 5:09Deborah Watling being memised by the the ball out wanting to mate
- 5:15with Victoria. I suppose you could imagine the.
- 5:19Sets would have been better in season 5.
- 5:21You. Know yes, or at least in black
- 5:22and white would have probably helped help.
- 5:26I mean half of it is in white anyway.
- 5:29He probably wouldn't have to even change that much.
- 5:31I mean the obvious superficial reason why it's John Perter
- 5:38preferred Dr. and Joe Kwan is his post John.
- 5:41It's John Perter, and in 1985, John Pertwy is television's
- 5:47Doctor Who, isn't he? Because Tom Baker is a little
- 5:50bit of a recluse. Peter Davidson's just finished
- 5:54but didn't really want to do have much to do with it at this
- 5:57point. Tom Baker is doing Parkinson.
- 6:01Terry Wilkin, this is your life. You know, all this sort of, you
- 6:07know, nonsense generation game, whatever type shows he's turning
- 6:12up in the velvet Cape and the jacket and, you know, going
- 6:17hello, it's me. I am Doctor Who man and have.
- 6:20You been John Pertwee, you said Tom Baker then.
- 6:23I said John, I said Tom Baker was a bit of a recluse.
- 6:26No, you just. Said Tom Baker was turning up in
- 6:29his velvet jacket. No, John Pertwee was turning up
- 6:33in a velvet jacket so Tom Baker. Tom Baker wouldn't be in bed and
- 6:37and that sort of thing. But now, so the idea is John
- 6:41Pertwee is television's Doctor Who and that's, I think the
- 6:45cymical ploy that there. I wouldn't dare suggest that
- 6:49Eric Fairwell and JMP have resorted to cymbal market
- 6:52employees or anything, but there was a slightly worrying streak
- 6:59of reminding people that Colin Baker is the Sick Doctor rather
- 7:07than the Doctor. So here's Patrick South, and
- 7:10here's this, here's that. Here's John Burnsley.
- 7:13Here's Jamie mentions of Tegan the.
- 7:15Terrible load all these. Old.
- 7:17Stories. Yeah, that's what he's talking
- 7:19about. The films and here's written and
- 7:21here's this, that and the other. Regeneration is mentioned more
- 7:24times I think in season 22 than any other point.
- 7:28Yeah, so it's just if this were a sequel to a pre-existing fan,
- 7:33it would possibly have some interesting areas to play in.
- 7:37But as it is, it just reads as a market employee to go, hey,
- 7:43guys, I know you don't like this doctor, but here's a painting of
- 7:47one of the old doctors, you know, And it's just, you know.
- 7:53It wouldn't be too much of A stretch, would it, to have this
- 7:56to have been a sequel to the Thai monster.
- 7:58I've returned to Atlantis with similar Thai monster with this
- 8:03similar sort of, you know, boring mat sets, theatrical
- 8:07performances. And then you could just say,
- 8:08right, this villain, the Borads come to Atlantis and started
- 8:12doing time experiments. Yeah, every word you just said
- 8:16was about it for my heart. But now imagine we've saw in
- 8:22with Pitt being seduced by Roger Delgado.
- 8:26Imagine in with Pitt being seduced by Paul Darrow.
- 8:29Imagine the sparks that would fly.
- 8:32Doctor Who would peak there. It wouldn't get any better than
- 8:36that. I didn't think it could be
- 8:37better than her and Roger Delgado, but Pete and Darrow.
- 8:43Prepare. The honeymoon suite.
- 8:47I'll ask you a question. Yes, well, you have to informate
- 8:53to a performer. Conversation, I suppose it's the
- 8:57only way we learn. And that is, Well, I mean, I
- 9:01learn from you. You don't learn from me.
- 9:04My cue points go up when I talk to you.
- 9:07Yours plummet spectacularly. But my question is, I'm glad you
- 9:12agreed. My question is, is Can you
- 9:16imagine another Doctor Who story that double climaxes quite as
- 9:21dramatically as Time Lash? Can I imagine a Doctor Who sort
- 9:27of runs out plot after 15 minutes?
- 9:32I'm trying to think what's the most an event for finalists.
- 9:37So if you imagine this being a 25 minute, what's what's the
- 9:42least eventful final 25 minutes of a classic?
- 9:50So whether it be a part 4, part 6, part, whatever.
- 9:54Least eventful? The Dominators?
- 9:57No, there's a there's a volcano blowing up in that.
- 10:02That's a toffee. I mean, you can't say this is
- 10:04uneventful. No, no.
- 10:06But in terms of the actual final, what would be the final
- 10:1025 minutes? I thought in a way Part 2 is
- 10:14almost saved by being 50 minutes because it sort of doesn't.
- 10:18It doesn't contain all the bits in the Part 3 or 4.
- 10:23I mean, do you suppose if this was 25 minutes long then maybe
- 10:26the twist? Of the Borat is still alive.
- 10:29And he's got Perry by the throat.
- 10:30That would be the cliffhanger. Well, I think jumping by
- 10:33timings, I think the Part 3 cliffhanger would just be the
- 10:38reveal of the ball ad I think that I mean it.
- 10:41Wouldn't be a singer though, wouldn't.
- 10:42It that's around Part 3 I think well, I don't I will have to
- 10:48time it when we get in but I thought that's about 20 odd
- 10:52minutes but. Should we dive into this gem?
- 10:55Yeah, the quicker it's in, the quicker it's out.
- 10:58I'll say gem. Yeah.
- 11:01It's a very idiosyncratic gem. Well, shall I count as in?
- 11:06Yes, please do. What 5432?
- 11:1210. Off we go.
- 11:19Oh, Colin, there he is. Yeah, smiling away, not knowing
- 11:24what he's about to be involved in.
- 11:27It's so funny on the behind the sofas because Janet Fielding
- 11:29objects to the smiles and the winks, doesn't she?
- 11:33Yeah, well, I mean, you know which, if you watch Femi
- 11:37Tigram's story, you would probably go, yeah, that's
- 11:40someone who's objecting to smiling, beaming Bob, you bitch.
- 11:44You starting episode one with a bitchy comment.
- 11:49Oh, here we go, Dara and Baker, right?
- 11:52We're in safe hands here, Jack. Yeah, so is.
- 11:57Yeah, a little bit of a reply is obviously better into Part 2.
- 12:01Do you? Know can I just say this?
- 12:05Look out for this scene all right, because it's my favorite.
- 12:08Scene in the whole. Story where that dreadful old
- 12:11creep runner, you can just see him behind there.
- 12:13Look sort of looking why he turned up for work today.
- 12:18Where? He changed him.
- 12:20To the Borats in a sanctum. And he thinks he's going to be
- 12:24like, puffing him up in front of the Borat and yeah, he just
- 12:26goes. And you are the traitor, doesn't
- 12:29he totally exposes. He's like, no ticker no.
- 12:33Yeah, Now I don't mean to go all in the beam, I mean, but I think
- 12:37you're fine. This characters name is Kendron.
- 12:40Runner Kendron. I mean, I'm dazzled.
- 12:43I don't know how you forget all the.
- 12:46Then. I don't honestly remember, but I
- 12:50do remember that this is Kempton.
- 12:53Kempton, who has the best line delivering the whole story and
- 12:57we'll get to him when we get to him.
- 12:59Does he? Yes, not in a good way, but.
- 13:03Oh, watch this action sequence in Long Shot.
- 13:05I mean, Pennant, what are you doing?
- 13:09Oh no, there's a few close-ups of people being knocked out and
- 13:12things. Yeah, and the mirror obviously
- 13:14would get the mirror out. Of the straight out the.
- 13:18Door. Did you see him?
- 13:19I'm out there. This is not going my way.
- 13:22Like the valley of him him probably in the over the phone.
- 13:25Just dash him now. Why does the mirror scare the
- 13:29androids? Because they're not the ball.
- 13:32They should be the ball out. Just that, Sir, I think that
- 13:35bother. The Androidis, but he's not the
- 13:37prettiest Android I've ever seen.
- 13:39We must like all the other ones. Is no different from.
- 13:43He ended up in Kowdor City, you know, and he saw those robots
- 13:46from the sand miner and he was like, what the fuck was going on
- 13:49with my designer? Yeah.
- 13:52So I could say Tom Maker Climbaker almost fell into the
- 13:58time last year, but. He's going in soon, you know.
- 14:02Yes. Well, yes, well.
- 14:05Why are we watching Nicola O'Brien?
- 14:08Yeah, with a restraint around her neck.
- 14:10Oh. See, you're a little bit ahead
- 14:12of me because I'm my Matt Nicola O'Brien.
- 14:14Yeah. I was wondering where we were.
- 14:16OK, So, yeah, just gone back a little bit.
- 14:20Yes. You're you're hurting me.
- 14:21It was a great thing for the companion to say.
- 14:24It's. Horrible that what is going on.
- 14:27We're being LED like a dog in the sort of those stranger.
- 14:33It's when I see things like that, when I look back to
- 14:36Stephen, BS like brilliant run in the season. 22.
- 14:39Strictly. And I'm like, yeah, he's right.
- 14:42She's treated appallingly. Yes, it's I mean, Stephen's been
- 14:47been telling you man, but I've been no more so than the one
- 14:51here chastised the likes of this and the twin.
- 14:56Did you? See that he went use my time web
- 14:59to rot the doors. So many space webs.
- 15:05See, we'll get back to the HG Wells then.
- 15:09So Herbert's just offered to help the he's offered to go into
- 15:13the Time Lash instead of the Doctor.
- 15:16Now this would be a good moment. I mean, the question is when
- 15:19does the Doctor find out that Herbert is HG Wells?
- 15:23That's not explicitly clear. If it was clear from the outset
- 15:29that the Doctor knew who he was, then the Doctor could make the
- 15:33choice, the heroic choice to go into the time lash himself to
- 15:39solve because you need to preserve HG Wells as a man of
- 15:43history. So you could have that dilemma
- 15:46of, I mean, I need to go into a torn ash because if we lose him,
- 15:50that's a paradox and he. Drops his card at some point,
- 15:53doesn't he? He goes, oh, he dropped this.
- 15:55Yeah, at some point off the screen we don't see him.
- 15:57I do like the reveal coming at the end though, because it gives
- 16:01the audience or the kiddie wings the chance to be clever and
- 16:04figure it out themselves, you know?
- 16:06Oh, we'll, we'll, we'll get to the end then, which is the whole
- 16:09confession, but. I would.
- 16:11Have done this set though with these bizarre hexagons and then
- 16:15the sort of lazily draped tinsel about.
- 16:18I mean, I would have put a massive effect over this so you
- 16:21can barely see any of it. Yeah, what are are you referring
- 16:25to the Season 22 box set special edition?
- 16:28That's the one. They tied it up a bit, didn't
- 16:32they? But it was, you know, like I
- 16:33said off Mike, gold leaf in a turd.
- 16:36Yeah, they'll just like, well, just blur everything.
- 16:39We can't do anything with this stuff.
- 16:41Blur everything have you ever had to, as the doctors doing
- 16:48right now, straddle beams that are sticking out of the office.
- 16:54Once or twice, yes. If I'm honest, rock climbing is
- 16:57a particular favorite activity of mine, and that's actually
- 17:01serious. I have done a bit of rock
- 17:02climbing. Well, if you're making a Doctor
- 17:04Who adventure theme park, you could have a sort of a Doctor
- 17:08Who version of centre parks. You could have a time lash.
- 17:12What climbing wall? All you need over this is the
- 17:15Crystal Maze music that that fella did on.
- 17:18Pip Haley did on because it looks as cheap as The Crystal
- 17:25Maze. Oh yeah, now imagine Pecker
- 17:28being played by Rich O'Brien. You have a crystal mains with
- 17:33me. Yeah, Crystal, that's right.
- 17:36And Ed, you the pole, but less entertaining.
- 17:41The whole idea of this was dangling him into the time.
- 17:44That's right. As an idea, it's very exciting.
- 17:46Yeah, I mean, Beam is clearly excited.
- 17:49He's dangling on the edge of oblivion.
- 17:53And now we have Perry, who appears to be trapped in a
- 17:56German Expressionist film, which was thought it's very grey and
- 18:01we've sort of tilted, tilted the set of 45° handle.
- 18:05I think Pennant JNT went at Pennant.
- 18:07You haven't done one awful shot in this thing.
- 18:10Just throw one in please in the afternoon.
- 18:13Yeah. So, OK, so now we have Herbert
- 18:18again. You know, it's a nice gesture
- 18:20from Herbert, but I think knowing that he was HG Wells
- 18:25would probably add to the you have to be a Vista because there
- 18:29is a sort of element of this person can't die in the same way
- 18:34that, you know, she says on that the Falcon rocks or the, you
- 18:38know, or any of these other people could die.
- 18:41You know we have to keep Herbert alive.
- 18:44It is unbelievable that this horrifically embarrassing and
- 18:49cheap set piece, yeah, is in a story next to a story, say, like
- 18:55the mutant attacking the doctor on the snowy hill.
- 18:57Like it's unbelievable that those two set pieces are in
- 19:01stories one after the other. Yeah, that really dynamic.
- 19:05So, OK, so Tekka and oh, I think his name is Ken's on this guy.
- 19:10OK, we'll go with Kendra. This was written presumably in
- 19:161984, and we obviously have the Big Brother Borat thing on the
- 19:24wall. Could Penman Roberts perhaps be
- 19:27filming this maybe a little bit differently to sort of overwreck
- 19:32the surveillance dictatorship angle a bit?
- 19:37You know, like I've no high angles from above or just
- 19:42something that could help sell this world a little bit more
- 19:46than they just walk down the corridor.
- 19:48I'm puzzled as to why you're choosing this particular moment
- 19:52to ask this question. When you could have said it at
- 19:54any point in this commentary. Well, I mean.
- 19:58Robert, sell this world any better?
- 20:01Yes. It's just when you have that,
- 20:04that hook of, you know, of surveillance and of, you know,
- 20:12an old dictator who is watching people and he doesn't like to
- 20:19look at himself. He likes to look at other
- 20:21people. I just feel that you could sell
- 20:23that idea visually a little bit more rather than it just being
- 20:29any old alien planet. Absolutely, Absolutely yes.
- 20:34Do you know what we saw the robot Professor Cronotis there
- 20:37and all the? Wives.
- 20:40I mean, it's quite horrible. It's it's a bit weird because
- 20:43it's poor old Dennis Carey is being puppeteered there by the
- 20:46Android. But like it makes more sense
- 20:50than the controller in the macro terror who they just put on the.
- 20:54Screen and it's the Shepard state and say right say you're
- 20:57the controller and you know like at least.
- 20:59They've given that. Yeah, OK, he's an Android they
- 21:01shove in front of a camera. That's that's the, that's the
- 21:05ruse. Do you think that the ball had
- 21:08and the Dennis Kerry character could be played by the same
- 21:12person? Yeah, because otherwise you're
- 21:15kind of, I get that, you know, it would make sense that this is
- 21:19what the ball had used to look like.
- 21:22Might have been the case if Sharda had been completed and
- 21:25carried and had his chance to be in a Doctor Who you know.
- 21:27Well, he thought he was occasionally in Doctor Who, he
- 21:32thought. Was he?
- 21:33Well, you've been. You've kind of been Sharda,
- 21:35isn't he? You sometimes you see him and
- 21:37then sometimes you don't, you know?
- 21:39But he was over transmitted though.
- 21:41Yeah, but you run in for one room and you get there, it's
- 21:43scary. And then you run out of the room
- 21:45and you get a cartoon, you know? So.
- 21:47Oh. Bloody love that version.
- 21:52Oh, here we go. This is the bit where Kendron
- 21:54gets killed. Yeah.
- 21:56So he preferred that for you? Yeah.
- 21:58Cheka has. Absolutely convinced him that
- 22:00he's up for a promotion, you know?
- 22:01Which is great. I mean, you're.
- 22:03Lying, you said I would be your deputy.
- 22:07A small room to put the paper up is gone.
- 22:11I This is the greatest line in the story.
- 22:14I have been faithful to you, which is the greatest line
- 22:19delivered in the story. We almost saw the Bora, then you
- 22:22just saw a bit of the make up, but not any.
- 22:25I do like shots like that where you're like, oh what is it?
- 22:28I want to know. Yeah, and again, it's the dead
- 22:32boss. Oh, here we go, the.
- 22:34Skeleton and. Yeah, that's.
- 22:37Some, although you know when he murders the fella in episode 1,
- 22:42yeah, the line he gets is great time for another election.
- 22:46I really like that line and. Again, Perry has been flagged
- 22:50around by a. Nicola.
- 22:53Bryan, you just sort of want to. I mean, no wonder she decided,
- 22:59yeah, I'm not going to come back again because I why would you,
- 23:04you know? I mean, after all this, you'd
- 23:06want a big burly bloke like Brian Blessed looking after you,
- 23:09wouldn't you? Like he ain't no one's going to
- 23:11give me any shit. Now look at him.
- 23:13Well, yeah, yeah, yeah. And say what you will about
- 23:18this, I think Mick LeBron and Brian Bleson, they're pretty
- 23:21good chemistry and those characters have written really
- 23:24well. Yeah.
- 23:25I was watching mine because I was doing that with Fraser.
- 23:27And sighs soon. I just like watching a sitcom.
- 23:29They're so funny together. That's what I mean.
- 23:32That's what happens when you get an actual proper actor from a
- 23:35story rather than these, you know, space levels.
- 23:39You love her, Herbert. Just seems to be taking all this
- 23:42into stride now you know, time crystals.
- 23:45And toys. And this is another.
- 23:49So from this, I suppose we're supposed to get the Invisible
- 23:53Man, HG Wells, but they don't really sell that because but
- 24:00again, visually, could Penman Roberts represent the Doctor
- 24:05being invisible? Because the Doctor's never
- 24:07invisible. You always see his visible
- 24:11imprint. So it's like the opposite of the
- 24:13Invisible Man. It's like the permanently
- 24:16visible man. It's just sort.
- 24:18Of I will say right, I do love the quirkiness of it playing out
- 24:21again with them being pushed back by nothing.
- 24:25Yeah. That's fine as poor at 57 to go.
- 24:29Oh my Dave, what is drama school?
- 24:32Stephen Moffett took a look at this script.
- 24:34You know when I could use some of this?
- 24:36When I'll take over Doctor Who? I'm sure they, I'm sure Stephen
- 24:40Moffat was thinking, this is me. And of course, I mean, Speaking
- 24:47of stop the showrunners taking inspiration from this or not
- 24:52inspiration from this. Isn't this exactly what RTV was
- 24:58warming about when he said the words Planet Zogg?
- 25:02Have ever Has any Planet Zogg ever been more Planet Zoggy than
- 25:08Car fell? My.
- 25:09Oh, has there been any others? Darkest, maybe?
- 25:14I could probably think of a. Few Zoggy Zogs, but this is
- 25:17probably the zombies. Yeah, we don't want to do this.
- 25:23Whatever this is, we don't want to do.
- 25:26This. That is the delight of the 80s
- 25:28though, right? Mid 80s.
- 25:29I'm like, this is exactly what they shouldn't be doing at this
- 25:32point in Doctor Who's life. Yeah, but you know, now I'd love
- 25:35it for that. Like I don't hate this.
- 25:39No, I mean there's there's entertainment which we've
- 25:42obviously talked about. And like you say, it's the power
- 25:45of the review mirror approach to it.
- 25:49Something about watching like a car crash in slow motion as
- 25:52well. And it does educate.
- 25:54Or a car fail crash. Oh well done.
- 25:57It does educate you though about because there's so many
- 26:00comparisons you can make because of the consistent of the of the
- 26:03quality you see where it does work in this in this period.
- 26:08Yeah. And there's definitely stuff
- 26:12that works here and there's stuff that has worked before
- 26:16throughout the years of Doctor Who.
- 26:18And I mean, even miss the idea of we're going to explain as
- 26:24scientifically as we can how we're going to do this
- 26:27invisibility thing. And it's a science concept that
- 26:31the kids watching come wrap the head around and think, OK, the
- 26:35doctor's going to be invisible. And here's how we apply that
- 26:39when we're going to be innocent and to take on the.
- 26:44I think, I think that's quite tasty, that bit.
- 26:47Oh, here comes the spandrels now, little models.
- 26:50Oh, and here's the the what's it called again?
- 26:53Timonic defray or something they can use on the door?
- 26:57Why not? Look at those two behind with
- 26:59their massive guns. They feel very botched, don't
- 27:02they? Yeah.
- 27:07You do me a favour. Oh, sorry.
- 27:09We're both doing what could. Will you please just try and
- 27:12just give me very briefly, maybe a couple of lines really, where
- 27:15the obsession with triangles came from in Karfel.
- 27:20Because they're just everywhere. They're on the walls, they're on
- 27:22the floor. The shape of the time Lash.
- 27:24The amulet ever invents a triangle.
- 27:26Why'd you imagine that was? Well, I suppose.
- 27:35Oh, I don't have them on, I mean.
- 27:37Because geometric shape science. Fiction.
- 27:40Yeah, no, it's it's just an easy shape, but not so alien enough
- 27:46so it's not figures at all. Handle.
- 27:49We was going to get some sort of religion, you know, with the
- 27:52three points, science, superstition, technology.
- 27:56You know, there's a massive conflict going on there, and
- 27:59that's what the triangle represents.
- 28:00Exactly. Darrow Baker and and Herbert,
- 28:09Yeah. Performance spectrum.
- 28:15Yeah, that's that's exactly what we're.
- 28:18Saying oh I see it's a meta joke is it?
- 28:20Yeah, you have to turn the dial if you turn the dial to
- 28:25download. Good grief, where did that
- 28:28Android go? Oh yeah, you went back into Paul
- 28:32One. You know.
- 28:33That sounds very Steven Moffitt to me.
- 28:37He's just like me, he no longer wants to be watching Part 2
- 28:40retirement, but unfortunately he's come back to Part 1 again,
- 28:45which is a fate I would not wish on anyone.
- 28:47Has John Perwie ever looked uglier than in that picture of
- 28:52him? Well, I mean, Colin Baker thinks
- 28:54that he looks better, which is sort of interesting.
- 28:58One of. You.
- 28:58What a bitch. But no, I mean, yeah, so that
- 29:03picture of John Curtis on the wall, has that come from
- 29:06somewhere, like an illustration from somewhere?
- 29:10Look at him in the back there. Did you see him?
- 29:12He's lying there looking up at the camera.
- 29:15Yeah, well, you know, you get your supporting artistry anyway
- 29:19you can. He had his head.
- 29:22He was holding his head up and like he was just lying.
- 29:24There, I'm not hitting my head. I'm a cold studio for this.
- 29:30Sorry, what was your question? The the photo of the the touring
- 29:35of John Pursley. Do we know has that come from
- 29:39somewhere or did did some artist just mock it out to put on the
- 29:44wall I. Don't think John Powies ever
- 29:46look like that. Because it's not very
- 29:48photorealistic, it's quite stylized.
- 29:52So I'm trying to think what do you know where they come from?
- 29:56I'm going to be rude now, but you know, when you see these
- 29:57artists on Twitter, yeah, I say artists in inverted commas and
- 30:02they draw pictures of people and then they at them on Twitter and
- 30:06go look at this. I've drawn a picture of you and
- 30:09expect, like some kind of a compliment at the hideous visage
- 30:12that they put online. Yeah, that's what that looks
- 30:16like. I hope you're not firing shot
- 30:18for a little who girl when you saying.
- 30:20That no, although that. Is we can't, we can't think
- 30:23about that. I've on God her her artwork,
- 30:26although I'm still convinced this is her dad doing that.
- 30:28Well, I mean. He's great at doing a stick
- 30:32person. Yeah.
- 30:36So, yeah, of course. So Darrow, obviously, not only
- 30:39does Darrow not get involved with much of a story, now he's
- 30:42kind of just stuck in the Ms. Anthem so that we're not getting
- 30:46that we have to cut away to him rather than have him involved
- 30:51with the rest of the story. Which is?
- 30:53He dies it soon, doesn't he? Yeah, Bumped.
- 30:56On Yeah. How is Herbert going to get to
- 30:58watch what's going on in the inner sanctum?
- 31:00Maybe it's the only bit of set dressing there that latter.
- 31:04Well, yeah, I mean, yes, yeah, yeah, they've conveniently what?
- 31:08Why is that ladder? In fact, you're tiny little
- 31:11corner. To be fair, they've put that
- 31:13tube in front of it to suggest that it isn't.
- 31:15Just the ladder. Yeah, we can't pan all the way
- 31:18up to the scene because then we'll see this TV.
- 31:23Oh look, Colin's now in the inner sanctum.
- 31:25This is going to be good. Well.
- 31:28Well, I mean, it might be. Oh.
- 31:33Here we go. I do like that line, my dear.
- 31:36Tekka is still working in other people's shadows.
- 31:39So you know, Doctor, And it's so the creatures of this time.
- 31:51I remember now for my loss. Is it?
- 31:54We don't know anything about your loss, Is it so?
- 31:57Well, we're done. We're sort of discovering as we
- 32:00go, you know? Yeah, but I feel like there
- 32:02should be a part of this that, but the thought is more like, Oh
- 32:06yes, well, when I was done perjury, this happened.
- 32:09But this is different and this means this and you know, we add
- 32:14up. And is the best line in the
- 32:16story. I'm sorry, not.
- 32:18The same can be said about our leader.
- 32:20The Borat of Kafel, the most luminous force in the Galaxy.
- 32:26Which again is, I would say would would the thesaurus again,
- 32:30because I don't, I wouldn't describe the boy as a luminous.
- 32:34I don't know in what way if it's that description.
- 32:36But it's a job job though, isn't it?
- 32:39Oh yeah. And it's pretty good in all
- 32:45respects, in the sense that even when you go into the council
- 32:50chamber and all the lights are turned on, it still looks pretty
- 32:54good because I think there's a worry.
- 32:56But when you take that out of the dark and put a light on it,
- 33:01but it's going to look rubbish. But it actually does.
- 33:04It still looks pretty good even in the main studio.
- 33:09You know, in the Happiness Patrol, you know, all those
- 33:11tubes in the candy kitchen and all that fondant surprise goes
- 33:14down it. Yeah, well, imagine the fondant
- 33:16surprise is a budget for this story, OK.
- 33:19And we've got 2 tubes. We've got the the makeup budget
- 33:22over here and we've got the rest of the story budget over here.
- 33:26Do you imagine there was sort of like a a deviation of the flow
- 33:30and it all went this way towards the makeup budget?
- 33:33She's forgetting that John Mason Firmer is the candy man.
- 33:39You will feel Rebecca. I'm sure John Mason Firmer is
- 33:41probably for plenty of people. And that's it.
- 33:43You will feel the back of my candy.
- 33:49Oh God almighty, now every time I watch that story, I'm just
- 33:52going to be seeing Jay and what times you call this.
- 33:58Oh God, the band rules are coming.
- 34:00It's all happening now in confrontations with the
- 34:02villains, invisible people disappearing, Andrew.
- 34:06Attacking Perry. They're thrown from water on top
- 34:09of it to make it look a bit more moist.
- 34:11Yeah, I mean now look, she is literally strapped with a bomb
- 34:15around her whilst an enormous cock wants to eat her.
- 34:20It's actually for the 1920s, thirties, King Kong style, you
- 34:25know. Beaver.
- 34:27Is this the most explicit? Sort of version of the lusting
- 34:32after Perry. It is literally a massive penis.
- 34:35Yeah. And like I say, yeah.
- 34:37And with the explicit intent of of breeding, I suppose it is
- 34:42like the the next step in terms you know.
- 34:45What do you actually the kids made of their all this, you
- 34:48know, tying up their friends, you know, putting bombs around
- 34:51their necks? And taking.
- 34:53Them with I mean, I don't want to go there.
- 34:55As a kid, I suppose this old damsel in distressed thing is
- 34:58something that Doctor Who has done before, obviously with
- 35:02reference, Joe Grant, who it would have happened to quite a
- 35:05bit. So I don't think there's not a
- 35:08precedent for it. And I understand that once
- 35:12you've tied someone to the railway tracks once, you're
- 35:16going to have to change it up a little bit, but that's just
- 35:19going in the wrong. Should This is a tricky
- 35:25question, but should Doctor Who be doing?
- 35:27They're sort of doing the Elephant Man, but if the
- 35:31Elephant Man was a massive Nazi villain, Yeah.
- 35:35So they're basically equating disability with being evil.
- 35:39And it's not the only time this season we've done it before.
- 35:42Should we? I mean, it's so icky, isn't it?
- 35:45Well, again, like you said, the physical grotesque equals
- 35:50Villamy point, which we've had obviously again Davros, it's a
- 35:56very Robert Holmes them think of Charis Jack think of Magnus
- 36:02Grill, you know, and we've had who?
- 36:07Oh, and obviously inventing from Varos the joke, the joke and the
- 36:13joke that Shell has is that Phil finds Perry disgusting.
- 36:18The whole joke is isn't it funny because we all know how really
- 36:22sexy Nicola Bryan is and Oh my God, everyone I'm doctoring for
- 36:25Nicola Bryan is she was sexy. No, that's that's the joke.
- 36:30But obviously that's. Funny when you say it, I'm
- 36:32funny. In the story.
- 36:34But that's the but that what I was for, for the benefit of the
- 36:37lawyers. That was me mocking the
- 36:40mentality of certain members of the production team and not the
- 36:44actual opinions of Jack Coir, Joe Ford or anyone hamster with
- 36:49their knife productions. I mean Nicola.
- 36:51Bride is very sexy, I won't deny that.
- 36:54Well. She's.
- 36:55Also our fine actress. Exactly.
- 36:58But that's the the joke is that oh, you I'm the villain.
- 37:03So you know, again, Robert Holmes shooter, you're evil is
- 37:07my good. You know you're ugly, is my
- 37:10beautiful, but it's. Beyond problematic, I think, in
- 37:15the climax when the doctor is bullying and abusing and
- 37:20insulting somebody on the grounds that they do not conform
- 37:26before tossing them into the time lash and it's just like the
- 37:29show just shouldn't be there at all.
- 37:32Yeah, and obviously we don't learn from that because although
- 37:36I'm not saying that the Borad should meet again, the Borad or
- 37:41Magellan, which is an anagram of Mengele, because we're going
- 37:45into Nazi then. I'm not saying that that
- 37:49character should receive a happy ending, but maybe that there was
- 37:52a better way of dealing with him than reaffirming that warped
- 37:59mindset of Oh yes, you are bad because you are deformed and
- 38:05vice versa, rather than you are bad because you're trying to do
- 38:10gym aside and geometric experiments and things you know,
- 38:14which is enough of the reason to be a villain to.
- 38:17Actually have the Doctor say it it it's just.
- 38:21And then in the next story, there's no fucking consistency.
- 38:23We'll say, well, that's what annoys me.
- 38:25In the next story, he meets the mutant and he's so kind and his
- 38:29hand is all scabby and nasty and he grabs his hand and he holds
- 38:32it tenderly and he's lovely with him.
- 38:34And that's literally the next episode.
- 38:38Yeah, well, OK, man. Well, I mean, in that case the
- 38:42the mutant's been killed by Paris.
- 38:44So I suppose the doctor kind of feels a little bit responsible
- 38:48for it. And we're not shown the mutant
- 38:50to be willingness, you know, it's just a sort of accident.
- 38:54But the mutant, you know, it is clearly mentally unwell or
- 38:59whatever and sort of rushes at them.
- 39:03So here we actually have obviously we've not commented on
- 39:05Herbert being and the Doctor being obviously on separate
- 39:09tiers of the set. So we've built the set so that
- 39:12we have column on the floor and Herbert above and Herbert above,
- 39:17which is a nice, you know, we don't do that much of A
- 39:20material. We don't have a lot of thought
- 39:24put in for the design in that way.
- 39:28And the Doctor has literally just murdered the villain again
- 39:32this season. Now, I don't mind a bit of that.
- 39:35Yeah, I I don't want that. I don't want this to be
- 39:37doctrine. Who?
- 39:38I don't mind the Doctor getting his hands dirty every now and
- 39:42again. But, you know, he blasted the
- 39:44cyber controller. He gasped.
- 39:46Shock eye to death with cyanide. He used the vines on those
- 39:50people. Inventions of Varos, you know?
- 39:53Mark of the Run is the outlier because that he just sends them
- 39:56off in the TARDIS to face that Tyrannosaurus Rex, you know?
- 39:59Yeah. Well, again, if that's another
- 40:02issue of we have to bow to continuity, so we have to keep
- 40:09the master because he's the master and we have to keep, we
- 40:12have to let Dabos get away at the end because he's Dabos and
- 40:15maybe dollars. And we can't kill them in the
- 40:19same sense. Everybody else, though.
- 40:22So really the only one who properly gets away with it, but
- 40:26you might not expect to, is shill is probably the only
- 40:29example of an original one who had to get away.
- 40:34That's right, he's saying to Philip.
- 40:35Mind, don't not kill him off. We'll have him back.
- 40:38Exactly with you know, Oh, OK, so Joe, great news.
- 40:45All of the villains in time Lash are dead, so the story must be
- 40:49over. Yes, on to.
- 40:52The Daleks. Oh wait, the band drills are
- 40:59coming. We've still got a villain.
- 41:01They're sitting there, Bastilistic warheads or whatever
- 41:03they're called. Yes, the ultimate villain would
- 41:06be, You know, Again, is it well, it's just more it's more I know,
- 41:14I know it's not a gun in that same way, but it is just like
- 41:19gunfire. It's it's the ultimate, you know
- 41:23thing, which is and the bundles aren't really bad villainous
- 41:27even not when they talk like that.
- 41:29They're not joke. No, not when they talk like
- 41:32this, but. The rest of the commentary like.
- 41:36That oh God no, I didn't even want to do that.
- 41:38Your opinion is appalling. It appears we are at war.
- 41:46Bless the man who's got his hand up the arse of that puppet.
- 41:50Yeah, I think the voice of that puppet that you want to beat the
- 41:54other rebel from the beginning. So you know, we've talked about.
- 41:58Stephen. No, no, Stephen Mac.
- 42:01So there's Stephen Macintosh, the female and the other one.
- 42:04And I think the other one was the voice of the oh so.
- 42:08Let's. Talk we get to the let's talk
- 42:10about filler. Yeah, so this is so for for
- 42:17Eagle Eye viewers at home, Colin Beaker's hair looks slightly
- 42:20different. It's massively longer.
- 42:23It's way longer. Because this is filmed during
- 42:26Revelation of the Dance, so I guess it was quite nice that
- 42:31David Chandler to come back, bearing in mind time Lashes
- 42:35presumably finished filming. So now we're going to employ him
- 42:39to come back. Are you happy to continue your
- 42:41association with Doctor? Why not?
- 42:44It's a joke. Before you got out, we called
- 42:46and we went to the BBC Bar. But now you have to come back.
- 42:53I mean, is it out there with one of the worst scenes in Doctor
- 42:56history? I mean, what's what's the point?
- 42:59It is absolutely pointless, but there are a lot of pointless
- 43:03Philistines and Doctor Who. I could point out many.
- 43:05I mean the time flow analogue. Do you remember?
- 43:08You know there. Are in that case, that wasn't
- 43:10literally we turned the studio lights off and we had to turn
- 43:14them back on again. And Eric say, would have to get
- 43:19the biggest napkin you can find and scribble some words on the
- 43:23back of it. What I do like about this scene?
- 43:26Is when he picks her up and she's kicking at the air.
- 43:30I just think it might have seen a bit more of that in the
- 43:32regular TARDIS scenes, because that's really quite funny.
- 43:36He's like, I will forcibly eject you from the dangerous
- 43:40situation, you know? So oh, and this is funny.
- 43:46The payoff gag is funny when he gets up to the console.
- 43:49Yeah, Hello. Hello.
- 43:52Yeah, do you know what? There are charming moments in
- 43:56this. There are like, I know I sound
- 43:58like I'm scraping, but there are.
- 44:01It's namely Herber and the Doctor moments I think probably
- 44:04be. He should have had a male
- 44:06companion, 'cause I tell you what.
- 44:08They wouldn't have put a male. Companion what they put Berry
- 44:10through. And now we've talked about the
- 44:12sort of troubling political angles of this story.
- 44:15Have to take one nice moment in that regard was where the
- 44:20doctor, you know, where Herbert says, oh, we're men and
- 44:23therefore we should, you know, charge into battle and kill
- 44:26ourselves. And the doctor goes, well,
- 44:28there's nothing masculine about throwing your life away on some
- 44:31reckless, would you like Eric, say with just, I don't know,
- 44:35some light bulb flipped on the back of his brain and now it's
- 44:39turned off again? Yeah, because in the next one we
- 44:42get all senior Bostock and it's all about honour and the duty of
- 44:46the mission and all. That, but in that case there
- 44:48were at least, you know, figures, mockery to some extent.
- 44:52I mean, I feel like Holmes is mocking all of that in
- 44:55Mysterious Planet. When he has glitz and dibber
- 44:58like the, you know, overtly. Masculine looking with the
- 45:01beards. And the guns and all of that,
- 45:04but they're just hilarious. I love that bit of this bit of
- 45:15to be fun Kerber. When I go 4th of you will be
- 45:18very low on my lips. It's really funny.
- 45:21It's funny. Stand face together, Jack.
- 45:26It's the face of the enemy. Nothing to do with that.
- 45:32Oh, God. But it's more charming than
- 45:34these scenes with Perry, and that's a problem.
- 45:37Well, yeah, it's the doctor being around other men.
- 45:40My faces is fine. Yeah, again, it's it's the idea
- 45:44of do we actually like women and want to watch them on screen
- 45:50doing things? I don't know.
- 45:53I don't know if Colin just responds differently as well.
- 45:55Remember that bit at the end of Revelation where he's with
- 45:59William Gorman Sorsini and he's like, tell them how we died?
- 46:02And he just kneels down, takes the the medal off him and nods
- 46:07sort of quietly. And there's just like, like a
- 46:09lovely rapport and respect. And it's just different to how
- 46:13he is with Perry again, like, yeah, they, they got there.
- 46:18They got there in a serious planet.
- 46:20There's this warped idea that, OK, the main characters of your
- 46:24television show should have conflict with each other, but
- 46:29we're not doing that in the right way.
- 46:31We're we're warping that idea, you know, because Clara and the
- 46:3612th Doctor or Tennant and Tate or, you know, there's plenty.
- 46:41Or Barbara and the 1st Doctor. You know there's plenty of
- 46:45bickering. I think people took against
- 46:49Clara and the 12th Doctor in the same way people took against
- 46:52this though, but just because it was so toxic at times.
- 46:56And your bloody tardism, fuck off.
- 46:58She says at the end. It killed the moon.
- 47:00You know, it's a bit much. But again, at least that was
- 47:03more like, oh, OK, so 30 seconds to impact.
- 47:07We're about to see how the doctor's going to get.
- 47:10Now this one. Now, Joe, before we get there,
- 47:13how do you think the doctor's going to get them out of this?
- 47:16Oh, Jack, I'll explain later. No, no, no.
- 47:19I'd prefer if you explained now. How now?
- 47:23I've been up I would have extremity.
- 47:26How was the? Doctor going to get them out of
- 47:29this. Look, if Glenn McCoy can't be
- 47:31bothered to give you an answer, neither can I.
- 47:33Excuse me, Mr. Script Editor, how was the doctor kept out of
- 47:38this problem? I mean, couldn't he just said he
- 47:41just dematerialized the TARDIS? What?
- 47:45What is not? Yeah.
- 47:47I mean, I don't know what that is.
- 47:50You know who would have? You know who would have covered
- 47:53it with a line, don't you, uncle?
- 47:56Terence, Yeah, He's not allowed back in the building.
- 48:00I don't know what Robert Holmes would.
- 48:02Do this is what happens. When he's not script editing
- 48:05all. Right.
- 48:06Again, another influence of Robert Holmes stories that can't
- 48:11end properly. All the other ones.
- 48:16All in season 12 to 14. Yeah, they have terrible
- 48:21climaxes, don't they? Oh, and I can't believe we do
- 48:26this now with Perry. Go.
- 48:27Oh, the dogs are no that horrendous abusive bully that
- 48:32was always. Picking me up and dragging me
- 48:33out of the TARDIS. He's dead.
- 48:35Yeah, no, she's saying. Oh no, not Herbert.
- 48:39She. Doesn't know SHG will.
- 48:41So, so you know, And then I think there's still another
- 48:46twist to come though, Jack. Hold your horses, all right?
- 48:49Even when the doctor's dead time and I should still not.
- 48:55Or rather, hold your Morloxis. There's another twist coming.
- 49:00Oh my word. I don't know whether any of us
- 49:03will ever be the same again. I do need to say this right.
- 49:06I do like the way that, oh God, I forgot his name, Mick Rossi's
- 49:09sort of chest hair poking out of his.
- 49:11I mean, he's quite a handsome bloke.
- 49:12But earlier on, Right Kendron was suffering from the same
- 49:17affliction, and it was very disturbing.
- 49:19Oh yeah, no, no one wants to see that.
- 49:23But now Perry's been strangled by a massive flipper.
- 49:27Yeah. Oh, that poor woman in my
- 49:29background can't can't aim again properly.
- 49:32They're sort of pointing in different directions, aren't?
- 49:34They yeah, she was so scared, like the prop's going to blow up
- 49:37in her face. What's right about the makeup,
- 49:39though, in the studio lights? Yeah, because that's what you're
- 49:42worried about when you watch this for the first time.
- 49:44They're like, Oh my God, that's going to fall apart and you
- 49:47should have kept it in the dark, but.
- 49:50I still think they should have a little bit of that fondant
- 49:52surprise to the rest of the story, though.
- 49:55Yeah. Well, I mean, and yeah, I mean,
- 49:58I, that's really good. Yeah, it's just great.
- 50:02Yeah, this is probably that my least favorite scene in the
- 50:06Colin Baker era. It's not him strangling parrot,
- 50:08that's my that's my second least favorite scene.
- 50:12But this with all the disabled shaming and it's just awful.
- 50:16Yeah, but you said the two giant leap similar.
- 50:20There were three characters on the screen right now who we
- 50:24thought were dead. Herbert, the Doctor and the boy
- 50:27that. How did any of them not die?
- 50:31I'll explain later. All that was the clone and I
- 50:35don't know. Will hand wave the other
- 50:37explanations. Yeah, it's sort of like the the
- 50:41the resolution to a Moffett cliffhanger, isn't it?
- 50:44You know, I'll explain later. In that case it's more of a
- 50:49cliffhanger, like let's get to the next thing rather than of
- 50:53this John Perthway in the background looking on, thinking
- 50:56oh thank God I was never in a story this bad.
- 51:00What is he doing with his hands in that picture?
- 51:03John Perthway preparing the Timelash.
- 51:11Oh God, no. No, he's making.
- 51:12He's mocking Perry in a situation of extreme peril.
- 51:17Yeah, yeah, Perry's going to be frightened when you start trying
- 51:21to meet with her. He.
- 51:22Basically goes you're utterly disgusting and repellent and if
- 51:25she looks at you she's going to scream so you might as well just
- 51:28commit suicide because you're awful.
- 51:30It's just horrible. Rather than like, hey, maybe
- 51:34Perry doesn't like me. You came out that you're choking
- 51:38her out. So I know when she gets a look
- 51:40at you, that's when she's really going to be freaked out.
- 51:45It is one of those times and it doesn't happen too often and
- 51:48I'll tell you where. I just think whoever's in charge
- 51:51is totally blind or doing a panto.
- 51:57Well, yes or yes. Sending me actors off to a
- 51:59panto. Yeah, yeah.
- 52:02Your grotesque excuse for a body, This language.
- 52:09And this doesn't make a lot of sense.
- 52:11So behind the wall was a picture of John Pertwee, and behind the
- 52:17picture of John Pertwee was a mirror that was halfway down the
- 52:23the floor. What?
- 52:25A why is a mirror that angle and B why did the Borat who's trying
- 52:31to censor things paint over the mirror with a picture of the
- 52:35doctor, which then had to be painted over with a picture of
- 52:39the wall with the rest of the council chamber?
- 52:43It's just, I'll explain later. I'll explain later.
- 52:49That's it. He's in the Time Lash now.
- 52:52Yeah, he's off the Loch Ness. Yeah, now, now, what's your
- 52:57favorite Loch Ness Monster in Doctor Who?
- 52:59Is it the Scarasan you know? Really.
- 53:01Ugly head up above the Thames or the Borad sort of plopping into
- 53:08the. I don't think there's a single
- 53:11element of time lash by 4. Wouldn't tell those icons be
- 53:16better if it was a bit more like this.
- 53:18I don't think there's a single element.
- 53:21You're mad, honestly. Oh, the Time Lash has exploded.
- 53:27Oh. No, look, just a couple of bits
- 53:29of jabber. Like sort of spurting out.
- 53:31Unconvincing. Yeah, most of the main axes are
- 53:35here, I think. He's not here.
- 53:37Shay's on at the Felcham Rocks. He's not here.
- 53:40I can only assume he's back at the Felcham Rocks.
- 53:43You know, this was like DWM preview.
- 53:45Yeah, JNT would be good, but don't worry, Graham Harper's
- 53:48back next week, all right? Yeah, chill out.
- 53:52The one that directed case around Josani.
- 53:54Please stay with the show. I mean, a million more people
- 53:57watch this than Part 1. We almost got long for Libya to
- 54:01be in the next story. I just want you to think about
- 54:04that for a second, all right? A million people.
- 54:06Just visualize a million people watching Time Dash Part 2.
- 54:11Part 2, yeah, probably. They're like great.
- 54:13Part 1 I can't wait to see what Paul Barrow's going to do next
- 54:17week. I can't wait to see the
- 54:19unpleasant Jeremy that the Doctor's going to have.
- 54:22What is the noun of a collection of responses of a million?
- 54:26People, oh, sorry, before I mean Herbert George Wells, this what
- 54:31is this piece of paper that the doctor's holding?
- 54:34Is it a calling card? It's not a business card.
- 54:38No other information on. It my name, Should you want to
- 54:41know it, I cannot be bothered to tell you.
- 54:43Yeah, you should have said Herbert George Wells at the
- 54:46Falchon Rocks in mind as well. I've said before the censor
- 54:49needs and there's no. Time to sort of like there's no
- 54:52time to sort of do what what we would do in the.
- 54:54New series was. Just have a coda where the
- 54:57people talk to each other and there's some.
- 54:59Sort of emotional resonance or consequence to all.
- 55:01This Yeah, but what what does the society look like now?
- 55:05They just. Don't care.
- 55:08That's why this is the Zoggier ZOG, because it exists.
- 55:11It exists for this storage to take place in.
- 55:14Yeah. And then when it when the
- 55:15scripts over the characters fall down like does it.
- 55:20Varos literally has a life beyond the Doctor.
- 55:22Who's well, I suppose literally, because obviously you've got
- 55:25still coming back in mind warp. But even if mind warp doesn't
- 55:29exist, you can, you can picture that if you're carrying on, I
- 55:36mean revelation to to some extent, I suppose you could
- 55:39picture Tranquil repose still, you know, functioning well, they
- 55:44offer. A a few, a potential future at
- 55:46the end, don't they the we plan. And it's interesting that
- 55:50Speaking of things in the story that we occur in Revelation of
- 55:54the Daleks, obviously the twist behind the ball heads that he's
- 56:00suddenly appeared again. They do the exact same thing
- 56:03with Demos. Ross had a secret clone that's
- 56:07presumably killed, and then the real bad Ross comes out and goes
- 56:10Oh no, actually that was just a clone or whatever it was.
- 56:14Assassin's bullets. Yeah.
- 56:17He must have thought, God, that twist works so well in Time
- 56:19Lash. Yeah, yeah, I mean, might as
- 56:23well. Looks like their boss.
- 56:25Saying, Oh my God, you know what, right, I've got to tell
- 56:28you this. I'm watching on the iPlayer.
- 56:29Yeah, and it's just skipped straight.
- 56:33No, wait, that it skipped to the point where I was last watching
- 56:36it, which was the bit where Natasha murders her father in
- 56:38the glass dawling. Oh, that's great.
- 56:40I mean, it's not the same fucking show, right?
- 56:44See, now that is an example of the same.
- 56:48Because Revelation is so strange because it's like Eric Hayward
- 56:52in what is his last full involvement?
- 56:56Because we'll never really know how much you thought of the time
- 56:59or the actually did this, his last property.
- 57:06And this is like, yes, this is what you've been working towards
- 57:11for, you know, three or four or five years or whatever it is.
- 57:14This is like full on 100%, you know, water, Eric Hayward vision
- 57:21and it's like, where has this been?
- 57:24What? Why did we have to take all that
- 57:26time to get to this? And if only you could have put
- 57:29the doctor in it. Yeah, well, if only the Doctor
- 57:32could have, you know, if it weren't for the fact that it's
- 57:35missing Doctor Who. Yeah, now Eleanor Bron is
- 57:40camping it about. Hugh Walters is buzzing around
- 57:43her doing great lines. William Galt's on the screen
- 57:46looking very dignified. Yeah, I just, I, I just cannot
- 57:50believe the difference in quality between stories in the
- 57:5480s. It's like dragon fire to
- 57:56remembrance. It's like caves.
- 57:57The twin dial lemma. It is for those reasons.
- 58:01It's so interesting to talk about, you know, the extreme
- 58:04differences, but it is just baffling.
- 58:07No other era has this lack of consistency.
- 58:11I don't. Think, yeah.
- 58:12And from story to story as well, I mean, because it's all good.
- 58:16Same as same that, you know, so I can fire to the membrands.
- 58:21OK. But that's a new year, so, you
- 58:24know, we'll have more time to work on it.
- 58:27This is week to week. We don't know what we're going
- 58:31to pump out. And the show's been cancelled.
- 58:35Here's two more stories. This one happens.
- 58:38People go, Oh my God, maybe it should have been cancelled.
- 58:41And then Revelation happens and they're like, no, bring it back.
- 58:45Yeah, you could do this. Then trial of a talent opens
- 58:49with that model shot and you're like, what's?
- 58:50Going on Doctor Who's pulled this act together?
- 58:53Exactly. Jack, we are in the inadvisable
- 58:59position now of choosing our three and.
- 59:03Three term discreetly fabulous things to describe time lash.
- 59:09And because I'm kind and I don't want to take all the best
- 59:13things, I shall let you go first.
- 59:16OK. 4th So let's do one each 2. Each.
- 59:18Oh, yeah. OK.
- 59:19Oh, no. That means I might have come up
- 59:21with five, just in case you built some of my other.
- 59:24One, no, but I'm going to be a bit sort of left field.
- 59:27OK. So I'll go with the the one
- 59:30element of the story, but I think it's pretty unambiguously
- 59:35great in all the steps. I think the Borat is pretty
- 59:40excellent. Robert Ashby, whose name was
- 59:42Mall Sepia, really good performance and I think is the
- 59:48make up is obviously I mean maybe the best prosthetics job
- 59:53in the entire classic coup perhaps and I think it lifts
- 59:59every other element of the production.
- 1:00:02The writing for the ball ad is if he gets a nice dialogue
- 1:00:07Pennant Roberts direction is boosted when he has the
- 1:00:11opportunity to flame. The bored is what he is, which
- 1:00:15is AB grade dad Ross, which is obviously what we've we've said
- 1:00:19throughout this commentary, but most of the performances are
- 1:00:25pretty good. It's a really functional villain
- 1:00:31and an example of where the say word Robert Holmes has been
- 1:00:40going for these last couple of years.
- 1:00:43And I think that's a final stab of that impulse in Doctor Who.
- 1:00:48I think it's really well achieved.
- 1:00:52I can't argue with the words of that.
- 1:00:54I'm actually going to say the other thing that I think is
- 1:00:58unambiguously great about Time Lash, and that is.
- 1:01:03Herbert George Wells, He's played by David Chandler, who is
- 1:01:08just having the best time and. None of it's subtle.
- 1:01:11Like, I'm not talking about the writing now, I'm talking about
- 1:01:13the performance. Very Peaky would have to me.
- 1:01:17Yeah, and fuck me, the story needs it, right?
- 1:01:20It needs that lightness of touch when he comes along and he's
- 1:01:23doing the exorcism and then when he pops up from the console, all
- 1:01:28of it, it's it's genuinely funny.
- 1:01:30It brings out something very charming in Colin Baker, even
- 1:01:34though he's still abrasive. But Colin being abrasive to
- 1:01:37another bloke is very different from Colin being abrasive to.
- 1:01:41And it's the reaction. Herbert always takes it.
- 1:01:45He either doesn't understand what Colin's saying, or he takes
- 1:01:48it with a smile that's completely different to the
- 1:01:51Perry might be in. So I wouldn't, well, I wouldn't
- 1:01:55lose all of that padding scene just for the male where he's
- 1:01:59like, you know, face to face and face to the enemy.
- 1:02:01And Colin's like, oh God, you know, I, I kind of wish he'd
- 1:02:05stuck. Around, if I'm honest, like I do
- 1:02:08with a lot of the male surrogate companions in Season 22.
- 1:02:11So yeah, Herbert, George Wells, especially David Chandler's
- 1:02:14sunny performance. Oh, God.
- 1:02:19OK, that was going to be my next one.
- 1:02:23Well, I guess we've got to talk about Paul Darrow again.
- 1:02:26So yeah, Paul Darrow, you know. Absolutely.
- 1:02:29I it's funny, I don't remember that much about Doctor Who and
- 1:02:34asylums, but I can only assume that that was a very different
- 1:02:38performance to to this from what I can remember.
- 1:02:44And he's obviously not as dominant within that story.
- 1:02:49Teca or mail in Teca, as he would say, is absolutely rich.
- 1:02:56He preferred without the hump, you know, big old commander
- 1:03:01machine, you know, he doesn't stare off into the distance.
- 1:03:05He sort of blows, you know, in a menacing fashion.
- 1:03:10I think he's realised what he's been hired for and he's
- 1:03:16determined to win every personal, every personal
- 1:03:20pleasure that you can out of it. And yeah, it's a pretty defining
- 1:03:28performance of the period. It's the likes of which we only
- 1:03:34ever really, I mean, I guess Richard Price, we've obviously
- 1:03:37mentioned, but that we very rarely get them from this point
- 1:03:42because Brian bless him, is just sort of playing Brian bless him.
- 1:03:45So that's to be expected, I think.
- 1:03:48Yeah, it's someone who knows what he's in and it's time to
- 1:03:53have fun with it, which is what we're doing, I suppose you and I
- 1:03:57are doing here, you know, knowing what challenge stands
- 1:04:00before us. And so I'm doing the best of it.
- 1:04:04It is the most enjoyably insane performance, I think, since
- 1:04:08Graham Crowden, as so did. Yes, yeah.
- 1:04:13Well, my second thing then is going to be all those little
- 1:04:17quirks that I mentioned in the story.
- 1:04:20So that stupid crystal that comes up in episode 2 and we're
- 1:04:23doing sort of the invisible shoving and then, you know,
- 1:04:26using the crystal to beam it back at the Borat is, it's all
- 1:04:29very stupid, but it's sort of fun for kids.
- 1:04:31You know, if you've got a crystal set at home or your
- 1:04:33mum's got a crystal, you know, you could play Doctor Who.
- 1:04:36And also the burning Android sort of turning up in episode 1
- 1:04:40and that paying off in episode 2.
- 1:04:42I like so all those, the the bit with the plants where he throws
- 1:04:46it and Colin's, all of those sort of random odd bits that are
- 1:04:50nothing to do with the story really at all are just thrown in
- 1:04:54as other ideas. I just like the fact that it's
- 1:04:57keep it keeps giving you stuff. It isn't necessarily great
- 1:05:00stuff, but it keeps giving you fun stuff to watch.
- 1:05:04Yeah, well, Speaking of fun stuff to watch, I suppose my
- 1:05:09final one, if I'm trying to run stuff out of it, is we finally
- 1:05:15have a while. I mean, you could argue for Mark
- 1:05:19Abrami as well, but Paul from Matt, this is the one, the only
- 1:05:22times this year or indeed ever that we get to see Colin Baker
- 1:05:28properly play with Doctor as he's the central heroic figure
- 1:05:34of the story, as you say, would be Mirror and the Canton
- 1:05:39crystals. He's actively doing things to
- 1:05:42progress the story. This story could not move along
- 1:05:46without the doctors in direct intervention, which is obviously
- 1:05:51different from some of the other stories that we've got in this
- 1:05:54year. And whilst he's perhaps not
- 1:05:59always the nicest to Perry, I think that gets superseded a
- 1:06:04little bit with how sort of uniquely or for like the Borat
- 1:06:08is to Perry and that sort of that that almost balances him
- 1:06:13down a little bit. You're.
- 1:06:14Talking about levels of abuse there are you?
- 1:06:16Yeah, exactly. You know, you never knew if you
- 1:06:19have it till you was with me. That sort of.
- 1:06:22Yeah. Being bandied about them.
- 1:06:25Yeah. Out the flying pan into the
- 1:06:27fire. Colin Baker makes for a pretty
- 1:06:31good flying pan. Yeah.
- 1:06:34And I mean, he's, you know, there's a, I've been there.
- 1:06:37A couple of nice lines you had in my Part 1.
- 1:06:41You know, when they see Perry as his newer system, he's like, oh,
- 1:06:46yeah, it's awfully difficult to recruit good staff nowadays,
- 1:06:50wouldn't you agree? And you know, I I hear that and
- 1:06:54I think, yeah, that's the ship thoughts that I want to see a
- 1:06:57little bit of a spike to him and has a few sort of back chat
- 1:07:02lines. But it's all pretty
- 1:07:04good-natured. And yeah, he's the unambiguous
- 1:07:09hero of the story, and the day would not be saved without him.
- 1:07:14Dodging the exorcism, Jack. I mean, that's just glorious.
- 1:07:17Exactly. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:19But you said the only deliberate bit of direction.
- 1:07:21In the whole thing. Yeah, well, it was.
- 1:07:24I mean, it's very clearly a choreographed move, but that was
- 1:07:28funny, which was what it was meant to be.
- 1:07:30And Justice throw away hello when Herbert jumps off.
- 1:07:33Yeah. Oh yeah.
- 1:07:34Hello. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:07:36Colin Baker is of. Of all the actors in this story,
- 1:07:40Colin Baker is arguably given the most best material to work
- 1:07:45with, which is sometimes what you want is just the Doctor to
- 1:07:49be given serviceable material that allows them to do unique
- 1:07:54things that can be seen in the eyes of the family audience as
- 1:07:59heroic. And I think the story kind of
- 1:08:02achieves that. I agree with all of that, yeah,
- 1:08:07but the writing for him in that climatic scene I just think is
- 1:08:12terrible. But that's not Colin's fault,
- 1:08:14and he plays what he's given and he plays it wholeheartedly.
- 1:08:18Yeah, it's so real advice. But yeah, everything else,
- 1:08:21absolutely well. You have one more you have to
- 1:08:24do. I was.
- 1:08:27I was going to mention Liz Parker does the music for this
- 1:08:30and it's. I mean, it's nice for
- 1:08:33representation, but it's the score I don't.
- 1:08:38Mind the score for this. It's less intrusive.
- 1:08:41It's been a lot of the scores in it's it's sort of an under
- 1:08:44score, but it's not going to be that so, but I wanted to mention
- 1:08:47her because I didn't mention her in the story.
- 1:08:49No, of course, my last thing can only possibly be what I consider
- 1:08:54to be the greatest single line in the entirety of Doctor Who.
- 1:08:59And no, it's not. Pray yourself.
- 1:09:01For the time lash, most people depart with a scream.
- 1:09:04Although that is a zinger, it's. The same could not be said about
- 1:09:08our leader, the. Borat of Carville, the most
- 1:09:12luminous force in the Galaxy. I just love that.
- 1:09:17I think Darrow put himself through Rada, really just to say
- 1:09:22that line and he delivers it and then he dies.
- 1:09:25I mean, it's just gold. Yeah, it can't take the screen,
- 1:09:29can't take him anymore short circuits.
- 1:09:33But no, I mean. I think we did quite well at
- 1:09:36finding sort of nice things to say about Time Lash whilst also
- 1:09:40acknowledging this manifest of faults.
- 1:09:42Well, I think that's the interesting thing about this
- 1:09:46podcast is that we we can talk about different areas of the
- 1:09:50show and I think it's important to talk about these stories in
- 1:09:55context. You know every The good thing
- 1:09:57about hamster with pen knife is that eventually, no matter how
- 1:10:01long it takes you, every single Doctor Who story will receive.
- 1:10:06It's time in the sun and. Several times, some have
- 1:10:10already. Well, indeed, and will get a
- 1:10:12chance for people to come up and defend it and you know that this
- 1:10:18is one that's and then they were quite rich from that level.
- 1:10:22But we we've talked about it at least.
- 1:10:25I mean, I had a wonderful time watching it with you.
- 1:10:27Yeah. So I think we we won here.
- 1:10:30Exactly. We had fun watching.
- 1:10:33The two things weren't necessarily correlated.
- 1:10:37We both watched and we had fun. You start and end on a bitchy
- 1:10:42comment. I love it.
- 1:10:44Come on dear, I wouldn't want you not on my side.
- 1:10:47You know well a great responsibility is about to be
- 1:10:51stowed upon your shoulders. Okay?
- 1:10:54Why do you look scared right now?
- 1:10:55Well, we've gone from the time monster to time that.
- 1:10:59No. I don't even know what the next
- 1:11:01level is. I've made you watch some real
- 1:11:05stinkers. You know, some proper wet farts
- 1:11:07of Doctor Who stories. Now I'm throwing open the gates
- 1:11:11to the whole 60 years and saying where do you want to go next?
- 1:11:15You can determine the level of quality we're going to watch.
- 1:11:18Well, my obviously my challenge of a little game that I've said
- 1:11:28at the start of this episode was I love, I would love if we could
- 1:11:31talk about every doctor at some point.
- 1:11:33That's right. We've obviously put our plans
- 1:11:36with Stephen B, who obviously you know, for a little bit
- 1:11:40behind the scenes context. Today is Monday, the 11th of
- 1:11:43November and we thought, oh great, 11th of November.
- 1:11:47What a great time for us to do our human nature family blood
- 1:11:51commentary, which we've been been discussing.
- 1:11:54Unfortunately, for personal reasons, Stephen obviously can't
- 1:11:57be here today. So I'm sure he's going to be
- 1:12:00delighted. But we've talked about him
- 1:12:01equally. Good story in his absence.
- 1:12:04He hates it so much he'll have great fun listening.
- 1:12:07To me, yeah, he had to. He had to talk about time.
- 1:12:10That's why I suppose it's only fair.
- 1:12:11But I did as well, so the same. Punishments.
- 1:12:16That's only fair. With 12345, OK, well, one story
- 1:12:24which for eagerly and viewers might remember our previous
- 1:12:30story, Amy's Choice. And you asked me Jack, where are
- 1:12:33we going to go next? And I decidedly did not say time
- 1:12:38Lash. And yet we somehow ended up
- 1:12:40doing Time Lash. Life sometimes throws you an
- 1:12:42interesting You don't. Remember, do you remember the
- 1:12:46story that we actively said? Oh, please do.
- 1:12:48You know how many conversations I've had since then?
- 1:12:50Yeah, well, we've mentioned them a couple of times in this
- 1:12:55commentary. Track your favorite part of this
- 1:12:58team of all it's the 12th Doctor and Clara Oswald, everyone's
- 1:13:04favorite for this team. Definitely not related to the
- 1:13:105th Doctor Perry in any way. No comparisons could be made.
- 1:13:14We could absolutely do that, couldn't we?
- 1:13:16Now it's November and you know what they say about NN is almost
- 1:13:22December and then know what happens in December.
- 1:13:27Why it's the last Christmas that Clara Oswald will ever face.
- 1:13:33Yes, Oh, I love, love Christmas with all my heart.
- 1:13:37Look, one thing you need to know about Clara Oswald, she will
- 1:13:41never be in another people probably Christmas episode after
- 1:13:44last Christmas because it says last Christmas.
- 1:13:48So it must be her final episode. And we're going to talk all
- 1:13:51about how it's definitely her final episode and nothing will
- 1:13:56change. How nothing makes sense if it's
- 1:13:59not her last. No, why on earth would you call
- 1:14:02it a lost Christmas and then not having to be a lost and they.
- 1:14:07Dare I suggest you know without bending hell that it is a better
- 1:14:12last episode than the last episode she actually got?
- 1:14:16Well, I do like both Hell Bent and obviously last Christmas.
- 1:14:21Which one isn't it? Well, that's yeah, it's it's a
- 1:14:24hardest team I love and would happily watch do almost anything
- 1:14:29you famously not such team admirer or Stephen Moffat or
- 1:14:35Claire Oswald or even the 12 Doctor so.
- 1:14:39I'm going to challenge you on that because that little period
- 1:14:43from Kill the Moon through to last Christmas, that is my
- 1:14:48favorite run of episodes in entire Morphett era.
- 1:14:52I love that run of episodes. Well, yeah, you include in the
- 1:14:56fourth of the night. I have a grudging respect for In
- 1:14:59the Forest of the Night, whilst I think it's really bad.
- 1:15:06But and we've circled background star unless you can.
- 1:15:08It's it would be my honour to talk about Stephen Moffett and
- 1:15:14Clara Oswald with you. Please take this as a as a
- 1:15:19recognition of my love for you. All right, now I'm willing to do
- 1:15:22this. That's why I definitely feel
- 1:15:26the, I feel the love, you know, picking in my general bells.
