- 0:00Up next, you got UMass Saturday twelve noon and Amherst ten point thirty.
- 0:04The pre game, the Hard Auto Group come down to kick off long dupon
- 0:08Sports Network and online via the Varsity Network App and Varsitynetwork dot Com. We
- 0:13wrap up the show with Jackson Mitchell, one of the Huskies captains, as
- 0:17Yukon goes back to Amherst and Jax, I know you were a part of
- 0:22it last time the Huskies were in Amherst and they celebrated, ran all over
- 0:27the field, storm the field because they hadn't won in so long. I
- 0:32don't want to bring back a bad memory, but man, that was a
- 0:35bad memory for me. I gotta say, yeah, it definitely sucked.
- 0:39I remember that game because you know, that year we were struggling. Also,
- 0:41you know, coach Etzel had left and we had our interim coach,
- 0:45and so the year was already going tough for us, and then to lose
- 0:48a game that we thought we were going to win. I think that was
- 0:50gonna be our first wing. That was right before the Yale game, so
- 0:52that definitely hurt. I do remember them storming the field and the band was
- 0:56playing like until we got on the buses. And left they were still playing.
- 0:59So definitely want to go in there and win this game because it's a
- 1:02big game for you know, the Northeast, but also just us and then
- 1:04kind of play every year and go back and forth. You never want to
- 1:07lose that game. Yeah, the images like of those things, they just
- 1:11stick in your mind sometimes Jackson Mitchell with us. Where's number eight? Of
- 1:14course? Six two two thirty five. One thing I want to ask you
- 1:18about that two thirty five is the listed weight for you? Do you lose
- 1:21weight as the season goes on or how does that work? Yeah? Definitely
- 1:25two thirty five is probably like when I show up and report for camp at
- 1:29the beginning of the season, so way back at the beginning of August.
- 1:32By this time of year, like I'm probably down to two thirty maybe like
- 1:34two twenty eight, twenty nine. But you definitely try to keep your your
- 1:38weight up and your muscles up, especially as you get later in the season
- 1:41and try to go further. Yeah. One of the things about you is
- 1:45you're always available, I mean, playing every game of the season. That's
- 1:49that's important as a football player in my mind, and obviously for the coaching
- 1:53staff, they love to know they got you, You're gonna be there in
- 1:56the middle of everything. Do you pride yourself on that kind of thing?
- 2:00Yeah, I learned early on as a young guy, like it's important to
- 2:02take care of your body, not just after you play a game or anything,
- 2:06but during the week and do prehab to make sure that you're preventing injuries
- 2:09from occurring. And obviously we play a violent game, so like things are
- 2:13gonna come up, You're gonna be soorry, you're gonna be banged up throughout
- 2:15the season, but doing your best to just get treatment and take care of
- 2:19your body so you can be there and play on the field and perform.
- 2:22Yeah, it's important obviously to be availed to be able to play. And
- 2:24also the role is captain. I mean you you're out there, they're taking
- 2:29to coin tosses, but you're also amongst your players every day, practice,
- 2:34game time, halftimes. Do you feel like there's a sense of need in
- 2:38some ways for you to be speaking up on certain terms and certain issues when
- 2:44things come up with your team. Uh, yeah, I think so.
- 2:46I think there's a time and the place for talking. I try to lead
- 2:50with my actions one hundred percent of the time and when things you know,
- 2:53you can kind of get a feel, especially when you've been around a team
- 2:55for so long and kind of you're the leader of the team. You have
- 2:58a good hand on the post kind of of what the team is going like,
- 3:01and you can kind of feel when things are off and something needs to
- 3:05be said, or you can just tell the way people are acting that maybe
- 3:07something needs to be said. But I really try to limit how much I
- 3:09talk because I feel like guys will listen more. But you know, the
- 3:13less you talk is when you speak up, it just means more. Yeah,
- 3:15I agree with you. Last year Buckets Awards semi finalists, New England
- 3:20Football Writers All New England Player for you and then this year the Chuck Bednark
- 3:23and the Bucks watch List. When you're recognized like that, is there extra
- 3:30responsibility in some ways for you to like bring it one hundred and ten percent
- 3:34every single time because you know everyone's watching. Yeah, definitely. I think
- 3:38just for this team to be successful and for the defense to be successful,
- 3:42you know, like the best players got to perform and play well, which
- 3:46at times I feel like we might have struggled with this year. But it's
- 3:51important that like the guys, especially the guys are starting and getting you know,
- 3:53I play every step on deepfense, so it's important that I'm performing at
- 3:57the best of my ability because I'm on the field, you know, for
- 3:59every snap, and it helps defense the more I perform, get turnovers,
- 4:02make tackles, that type of thing. So so it's definitely an extra responsibility,
- 4:06but it's something you're not trying. You don't try to think about too
- 4:09much. Yeah, you bounce back. The team held the Sacred Heart out
- 4:13of the end zone after a couple tough weeks. That's been part of the
- 4:16difficult season you've had. You've had all those close games. It could have
- 4:19gone your way. I mean, theoretically, you could be playing for a
- 4:23bowl game here. I mean to me, you could have five wins,
- 4:26but you don't. So what's the motivation going into this last game? What
- 4:29are you trying to prove here as a Yukon football team. I think the
- 4:33first thing is just like U Mass, you know, they we compete with
- 4:36them all the time, We put them every season, like I said,
- 4:39and you know, we want to make sure that you know we know where
- 4:42we stand with them, and that you know we can we win the game.
- 4:45And you know, just play. Being in the Northeast and a team
- 4:46that plays every year, you know, you kind of want to win that
- 4:49game and make sure they know where they stand and where we stand. Then
- 4:54just as an individual, I think, you know, this is my last
- 4:56college game ever, so you definitely want to go out on a high note
- 4:58with a win and remember, you know, your last game being a win
- 5:01and just you know, continuing on and understanding that like through adversity, that
- 5:05doesn't mean you kind of can just give up for the team, you know,
- 5:08like you got to keep fighting and try to win those games regardless of
- 5:11the record. Yeah, that's a great example to set, no question.
- 5:14But one of my highlights this year was your fumble recovery run back against Rice.
- 5:18I didn't even think it was a fumble. I thought it might have
- 5:21been a forward pass. But I guess that's the classic. You got to
- 5:26play until you hear a whistle, Is that right? Because you picked it
- 5:28up and you knew and you ran all the way you know, down a
- 5:30field and I'm thinking, man, it looked like a forward pass, but
- 5:32anyway, good news, he's in the end zone. Yeah. I never
- 5:36really know on those types of things because it happened against UMass last year actually
- 5:40too, and when that happens, I kind of did run and try to
- 5:43pick it up. Like this week, in very sacred heart, I tried
- 5:45to do the same thing. I fumbled around with it, but I got
- 5:46on it. But you know, you just try to scoop it up,
- 5:48and in practice, that's something that you practice every week, Like, if
- 5:51the ball's there, just scoop it up, no matter what, because you
- 5:54never know what the rest are gonna call, you know, so just scoop
- 5:57it up and run and if there's no whistle, just keep you going running,
- 6:00yeah, and then start celebrating. Right In high school, you had
- 6:03the ball in your hands a lot. I mean we've talked about this before.
- 6:05You had eighty catches as a junior at fourteen touchdowns, so you're used
- 6:10to having the ball in your hands. That's a little unusual as a linebacker.
- 6:15Yeah, it is. I wouldn't say I feel like I lost my
- 6:17touch a little bit. You know where I was, you know, getting
- 6:20the ball every single almost every single play in high school. So definitely it
- 6:26feels a little bit different now getting the ball. But I just try to
- 6:28fly around to the ball and you know that's that's how you win the game.
- 6:31You're getting your offense more positions and stopping them from scoring. So just
- 6:35fly around to the ball. If the ball is on the ground, try
- 6:38to get on it. And if you just run to the ball, you'll
- 6:40get turnovers for sure. Yeah, that's one of the keys. When you
- 6:43guys have gotten turnovers this year in the rice game perfect example, four of
- 6:46those are turnovers. I don't want to say happenstance, but they do.
- 6:49They happen coincidentally when you're playing good positional football or is there luck involved in
- 6:55it? I think it's both. I think when you're playing really really hard,
- 6:59you know, flying around, being physical, that's when the ball will
- 7:01come out because multiple guys are in on the tackle. Then someone can kind
- 7:04of punch the ball out and that's just kind of effort. And then you
- 7:08know there there will be times where you do make a good play and maybe
- 7:12you think you can jump around and you make a good break on the ball
- 7:14and the dB can jump around and get an interception. That type of thing.
- 7:16So I think it goes both ways. But also knowing your keys and
- 7:19being prepared, it happens, you know, starting Monday, where you're watching
- 7:24a lot of film and you know what's happening, so when the game comes,
- 7:26you kind of know what's coming. And that's kind of where you can
- 7:28get those fumbles or those big hits that cause the you know, the fumbles,
- 7:30and then it's a big part of the game, there's no question.
- 7:33But well, I got to tell you there's been a pleasure covering you over
- 7:36the last few years. We love the way you're playing, and we're going
- 7:40to be there Saturday, and when we work walking off that field with a
- 7:44victory, I'm gonna be celebrating. Give you up here in recovering somewhere,
- 7:47all right, I appreciate it. Thank you very much. That's Jackson Mitchell
