- 0:33SPEAKER_01: Here's our episode.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: Is this like the rough draft of the sermon?
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Oh like if you're not.

- 0:43SPEAKER_01: This is like the first part of the process.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Yes, absolutely.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, to the point where like there's an outline ish.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: We're just gonna see how this goes and edit after.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: You'll have your work cut up for you.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.

- 1:06SPEAKER_01: I'm uh joined here with our awesome associate pastor, Clint Jernigan.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Hey there.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: Hey man.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: This is exciting.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Thanks for being here.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Back in the studio.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: We are back in the studio.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: Everybody's wearing pants.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: It's it's a much more uh professional environment.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: Not a little boat coffee table situation.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Scott's not still rocking.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: How are you?
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: Are you feeling grounded?
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: Right now, I'm good.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Things are great.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: We're gonna we're gonna get you rocking with these questions.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: I can't wait.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Um, but no, man, thanks for being here.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: You're jumping in.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: Uh Scott's doing a little traveling and stuff, got some family obligations and graduations and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: Um and uh glad to have you.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: Excited to have you uh dig into the scripture here.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: What's um what stuck out to you so far from last week of questions?
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: Maybe in general, how do you how do you think about the questions of that we see in scripture, especially from Jesus, or maybe just in general thoughts about what questions help navigate us for our faith journeys?
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: Um thank you for having me.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Uh these these moments are are truly honored just to be able to to gather around scripture and uh and uh lead in this way, uh, bring some thoughts up.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Your question is a question of questions, and I I dig it.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: And that's really what this whole series was born out of.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: When we sat around and we were thinking about, okay, after uh after Easter, working through First and Second Thessalonians and then bringing it back around to Jesus, how do we tell those stories or how do we re reveal things about Christ um in a in a different light?
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: And I think when you look at the questions that Jesus asks, it reveals something about him and his desire to reveal things in in us as well.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think that's true in in any conversation you have with anybody.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: You know, if you talk with your kids, they're gonna ask one level of like basic, probably basic level question.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: If you're sitting in a hospital room, you listen to the questions that that those people ask, right?
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: There's a different heart and intent and and anxiety or or or um motivation about those sorts of questions.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: So to dive into the questions that the one who was there at the foundation of the world, yeah, we should probably pay attention to this.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: When he's speaking holds a little more weight.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: Possibly.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Um do you when you see those in scripture, are is that always something that naturally jumps out to you?
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Like, oh Jesus is asking a question here.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: Is there a way to sometimes get lost in the story and you're just thinking, oh, he he's just looking for some information, you know?
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: Uh there's the different layer, I think, uh, when you when you put the thought about who who this is actually uh speaking.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: But sometimes it's nice to get lost in the story and you're just like, he wanted to know what they had, he wanted to know where they're going.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Always with the understanding of of what's what's actually happening.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Scott mentioned last week, like he's not asking to gather information, right?
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: He's not trying to figure out uh you know what what the the story he's trying to pull out of us and engage us in the process, in the moment, help us maybe even like slow down.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Like if you have a conversation with someone and you're just like, so I'm gonna ask you this question just so that you hear what this sounds like, right?
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: It's not to be to be rude or mean, but it's I think to it, it's to expose something else that's going on.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: Like the idea of when you when you hear it out loud, sometimes it changes like, wait a minute.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Is that really what I think?
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: What I think I'll hear you saying is this, and like, oh yeah, that's that's ridiculous.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: When you say it, it sounds so much different than it was in my head.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: But as I as I have read scriptures of the past few years, um, we did a very similar series like this in youth ministry a hundred years ago.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: And I think even from that, uh I think it was long hair days.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, those those are good days.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: Those are good days.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: My wife would disagree, but um, yeah, starting to look at scripture, to look at Jesus through the the questions that he asks again just reveals something different.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: And so since then, slowing down and and taking more notice of of those questions, I think it's been pretty cool.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: So yeah, uh last year when we were sitting down seven, eight months ago, and we were playing this this series, I got fired up.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: And then at some point, like you've gotta leave a whole lot of questions on the on the cutting room floor, right?
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Like there's just way too many to dive into.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: So maybe, maybe part two next year and two years from now.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's plenty of them.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: Definitely something you could revisit.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: He um I think Scott has mentioned questions as like a teaching tool also for Jesus as he's helping guide and shape uh not only the disciples, but obviously that work continuing still today about what we can understand from those uh types of uh thoughts and and practices and really take a step back and think you know, you I think you question motivations or the true um issues of the heart, maybe that that you see instead of just doing the things, not sure why I'm doing them.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: You know, there there's a different engagement in your mind and in your heart when you have to answer a question rather than being told to do something, right?
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: So like I could tell my daughters like, hey, go clean your room.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: But it's probably like on a different level to ask them, have you cleaned your room and make them stop and like be more engaged in the thing and ask the questions of themselves and think through the list for themselves.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's a just a different uh level of engagement with that thing.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: That's good.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: All right, well, where are we gonna be this week?
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: This is uh Matthew chapter 15.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: This is um Matthew is is so cool.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: So written uh as uh course a Jewish tax collector, also known as Levi, called by Jesus to follow him, right, to become a disciple.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: We see Matthew leave everything.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: He walks walks away from it all, follows Jesus.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: So this is firsthand account, right?
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: The narrative is he is along for the journey, uh, he is seeing this happen firsthand.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: He is probably at this point, 55 to 65 um uh AD, he has grabbed Mark's account.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: He's building on this, and this is uh of course one of the synoptic gospels where they tell similar stories, but Matthew's um insight and his his eyewitness account is gonna be a little different uh than even for Mark's, but but tracing pretty pretty closely along with that.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Writing to a mostly Jewish audience um and telling us truly he is who who Jesus is, especially in Revelation of the prophecies, right?
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: So this is this is the guy.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: Matthew's really trying to connect the dots to what we would call the Old Testament or the Jewish scripture to try to help people understand this this is the guy.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: The long-awaited Messiah, right?
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: Uh the fulfillment of the promise to Abraham from the line of David.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, he opens up with a whole genealogy.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: Uh, Jews, Gentiles, alike all kind of set up the whole the whole story, the whole narrative um in the in the direction that Matthew wants to teach.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: And interesting in in along that same thought line that you see this story here that is a gentile crowd.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: So this is uh we're gonna be in 29 to 39, and um this is Jesus healing people and also feeding people, and this is the account of the feeding of the 4,000.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: Now, is that the same?
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: I think I remember just feeding five thousand.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: I thought it was five.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Tell me is that something else?
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: What what's happening?
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: So in the previous that's a perfect setup.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: Uh in the previous chapter in Matthew chapter 14, yeah, we hear about the the feeding of the 5,000.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: And this is like the bigger, more popular brother to the two feedings, right?
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: Like most airtime goes to the feeding of the 5,000.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: There's more information there.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: It's the the first time that this has happened.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: And somewhere shuffled in the deck, you get the the 4,000.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: Um the the first go-round was to uh mostly to a Jewish audience.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: Jesus uh he fed them uh we we know the story, right?
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: The there's 12 loaves of uh bread and the five loaves of bread and the and the fish, and then they collected the 12 basketfuls at the end.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: Uh the disciples are of course amazed and all, and that's just the previous chapter.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: Let's hold that in mind as we're reading this one.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, he has now traveled past there, he's walked on water, he's met with the uh the Canaanite woman, and uh who is uh uh uh a Gentile, a non-Jewish person, and has had a really, really cool conversation with her just before this.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: So it's almost like Matthew positions this as a bit of a turning point for Jesus to now reach out into some some uncharted territory, right?
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: Where he leaves the where where Matthew would want to tell you that he's the the long foretold king of the Jews, right?
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: The Messiah who's coming.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: And now Jesus has this conversation, and then Matthew puts right on the heels of that, this feeding of the 4,000, surrounded by Greeks and Gentiles and all sorts, yeah.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: I know there's just a time limit on Sundays, and you have to kind of get the passage a certain amount of verses, but even if you back up to the beginning of 15, he's with the Pharisees and he's teaching them it's the hand washing and it's about, hey, it's really not about the external, it's really the internal.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: And it's just so interesting and so apparent that Matthew is building on this whole narrative and Jesus is teaching, because I I think we'd encourage you to to read the the story from 21 to 28 about that, because it's a really interesting encounter.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: Could have been an encounter.
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: Um, and even the language Matthew uses as like Canaanite, you know, that would have been a very Jewish understanding of like this is remember that whole promised land thing?
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: This is even to use that terminology, I think, for the for the people there would have would have emoted something in them.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: So um I I just love how it all connects together and builds on itself, but even that inner purity to the Jews and then him now stepping out to the outsiders, what does that what does that speak to you about and just the differences of maybe the audience as we as we look in at these verses?
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: I think it connects back to um again Matthew's desire to to bring in not only Jesus as the long-awaited date David figure, right?
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: The the king, the rescuer, right, the that that sort of figure, but also tying it all the way back to the original promise with Abraham, right?
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: That that through you you will be a blessing to all nations.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: So Matthew is now peeling back another another side of Jesus, another desire of his heart.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: There's a word in here Jesus says that he was I'm moved with compassion, right?
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Like there's this there's this love for for the world, there's this love for others besides just uh besides just the Jewish people, and we rece we see him reveal anything about himself, but then move in that love as well.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: Do you, when you read this, do you get that sense from the disciples that they're having a hard time with this?
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: Reading between the lines and knowing just some of the uh the challenge that most Jewish people would have had with literally anybody else, probably at that time, just because the oppression they had experienced, the separation they experienced, um, the the way that Rome came in and and kind of, you know, not kind of definitely oppressed them.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: Um some of these disciples may have been really struggling not only with having a tax collector on their team, right?
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: The guy who's writing this, but then also to go into a different place.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: And he's, you know, Jesus drug them through Samaria and they're like, What are we doing here?
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: Like, right.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: He's like, I have to go through here, right?
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: In another story.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: Uh, for him to go intentionally into these places, to your point, I think there's probably a real like possibility that they're like, What are we doing here?
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: Like these people are and and the the word above this uh are dogs, right?
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: Like they're not they're not they're not us.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: Like us, yeah, exactly.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so it could have been a real struggle for them, and we'll see what Jesus even asks of them to do uh in this story that that probably would have really maybe rub rubbed them wrong way.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Had some issue with.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: So he's um big crowd, he's been with the crowd.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: We see from the story there were there three days.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: Um, he's performing miracles, he's healing them.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: And he they praised the God of Israel.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: So that's that's a key distinction there, too.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: About this outsider group.
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: I did the finger quotes for those that that are not watching.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: The outsiders, because that's us, most of us, anyway.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: Um the god, they're praising this God that they maybe know very little to nothing about other than Jesus right before them.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: So in this in this section of the world, um, aware probably of of of Jewish stuff for some of them, a lot of them probably just in the Roman world, more related to to paganism and and maybe more of like the Roman gods and the Greek gods and that kind of stuff.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: So for Jesus to step in, perform these miracles, to heal them, to show up on their own shores, right?
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: To be present to them, to show them like not only his power, but his his love for them in a way that's that heals them, uh, through his compassion and and his uh ability and his lordship, they're like this this is different.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: And they started, yeah.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: Matthew makes sure that we know that they're not just praising some pagan god or some false god for this.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: They're like, this this is the guy we're gonna praise.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: It's really cool.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: Um okay, so now let's talk about his compassion a little bit.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: Um NLT says, I feel sorry for these people.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: The other translations would say yeah, compassion.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: Actually says it.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: He tells the disciples, hey, this is this is what I'm feeling for them.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: Um he doesn't want to send them away hungry.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: So what does that what does that tell you or teach us about Jesus about even in this moment there's these physical needs here.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: So you would think it would be enough, right?
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: That that they they got healed.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: And there's something about Jesus that even after these people are healed, they kind of came what they or got what they came for.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: But they're not leaving, right?
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: They're camping out.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: They want to see what the rest of the thing's about, right?
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: Like they have received probably what made them show up, but they're just they're just hanging around and Jesus sees them and and this compassion and he he he wants to meet them at their need of hunger.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: This word uh say a little digging.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: This word compassion comes from like the understanding of the time that comes from like your your guts, right?
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: Like your your bowels.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: Can you say that on this podcast?
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: Scott said far worse, I think.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: But it comes from like your it's we would say our heart now, this this compassion was believed to have come from like your your guts, right?
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: Internally.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: So Jesus has moved in what's understood to be like the compassion from his his bowels, which is where these people are hungry, right?
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: So like he has this emotion from what is understood to be from his his insides on these people who are now empty on their on their insides because they just decided to stay for three days and be a part of the party.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: And he's like, I don't want to send these guys home because they will collapse on the way home.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: So there's this, there's this compassion that moves him to uh seeing the needs and and meeting the needs of the people that are that are there in a very, very physical and very, very practical way.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: So they've got a problem.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: Jesus feels sorry for them, has compassion on them, wants to feed them.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: And the disciples, of course, because they just witnessed this miracle.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: They immediately are like, oh, well, Jesus is gonna do this, right?
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: With total full faith and no doubt and no nothing, right?
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: That's what we might expect.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: Unless you've read about the disciples before.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: Unless you actually see the story and they question where would we get enough food in the wilderness for such a crowd.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it's almost like they're poking, they're poking fun at where these people live again yesterday.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: Uh in staff meeting, Jace even mentioned like this word wilderness is desolate, like this desolate place.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: Like, we would if you're a if you're a city folk and you go to a rural community, you're like, man, where's this podunk town?
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: It's almost like that sort of thing.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: These guys are showing up, like, man, this is the middle of nowhere.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: Where do you think we're gonna find food for for these people?
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: To your point, it's the it's the exact same situation that they just experienced with a thousand fewer men.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: So probably four thousand fewer total people, something like that.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: And like, man, what are we gonna, what are we gonna do?
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: But I mean, how that's humanity, right?
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: Like that's our that's our true um just humanness that that we look at the situation and God's like, haven't I seen you through this same situation before?
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: Like, haven't you already faced this?
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: And I saw you through that as well.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: Like, how are we possibly gonna find all this food in the middle of the wilderness?
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: And uh, and Jesus, and this is where the the question enters in.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: So the series is the questions that Jesus.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: This is where the question enters in.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: Okay, so this question.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what is it?
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: So uh mine says uh verse 34, how many loaves do you have?
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: We read this a thousand different ways, right?
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: How many loaves do you have?
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: How many loaves do you have?
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: Like there's there's all sorts of inflections that you can put on it.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: Um, but but Jesus is again, he's not just saying, Well, you go feed them.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: He he's inviting them into this go clean your room type of thing.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: Like, how many how many loaves do you have?
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: What you got?
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: What you got to work with?
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: This is something that um that I've learned to do like with my girls when they bring me a problem, right?
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: Like, oh dad, this is this is broken.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: Can you fix it?
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: I'm like, well, yeah, what have you tried?
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: Because I don't want to try the same thing that you tried, right?
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: But what I really want to know is that you tried something, right?
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: You're bringing something to the table.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: You're you're already engaged in this process and just instead of just throwing this at me and be like, hey Dick, can you fix this?
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: So you tell me, what have you already tried?
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: And I feel like this is kind of what Jesus is asking this.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: So, okay, yeah, there's nowhere to feed such a uh such a crowd in this remote place.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: So so what you got?
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: What do you bring to the table?
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: Literally to the table.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it'd be interesting to know what the tone and the reflections were in all this interaction between them.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: Always in love.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: Jesus was not sarcastic, right?
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: Jesus was loving.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: I think we have to remember that.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: But but I think yeah, it's it's an engagement, it's a love.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: Again, he's moved with compassion, and then he looks at these jokers and he's like, How many loves do you have?
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: Like what do you have to work with?
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: What is it about our humanness, do you think?
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: Um, just Clint's opinion hour here.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: Um what do they call that?
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: Editorial?
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: This is the editorial mode.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: Oh, perfect.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: Your thoughts on this.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: But what is what is it about the humanness that that causes us to struggle to trust God when when we've already seen him be faithful?
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: If I were these guys, you get wrapped up in the moment, right, and in the hustle bustle.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: There there is a sea of people in front of you.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: So if it's 4,000 men who they're counting, we'll we'll hear that in a minute.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: 16,000 people-ish, m more or less, because people are traveling with their wives and their kids, their family, like all that kind of stuff.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: So if I looked at a sea of sixteen thousand people, like it would be really easy for me to get wrapped up in the things that I see, maybe not in the things that I remember, or the fact that Jesus is the the one of the unseen.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: And this is I think is what he's drawing out.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: Okay, w what do you have?
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: Like you you're engaged, you're invited to be a part of this process.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: What what do you have?
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: And in questions do something uh that that slow slow it down, hopefully remove the the nerves, the anxiety, the things that are seen, and then you look at the the things that you have.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: And and it changes it from perceived need and and lack of ability to meet that need to just looking at the things that you have like in your in your hands and saying, Oh, I you have something.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: And Jesus is about to call call it out in them.
- 21:11SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: That makes sense.
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: That's great.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I love that.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: What is um what do you think the practical takeaway is in in that lesson there about they're looking at what they don't have.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: They're looking at this big problem.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: And Jesus, so they're focused on what they lack, I guess.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: And Jesus is like, what what can you surrender?
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, he he obviously does the rest, but we know, I mean, just reality, that's a really that's a really hard place to get to uh mentally, and probably not even a place we can get to on our own.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: That's the whole that's the whole wrestle about that surrender versus no, we wanna we wanna control the thing.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: But you know, for someone struggling maybe with some of that, like, hey, I I'm not sure what I need, or I I do have these needs that I I don't feel or met.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: I mean, what is that practical thing that we can take away, hopefully, from this passage and and just the spirit moving in us that that that happens?
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: I think it's setting up reminders for ourselves, right?
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: We read in the Old Testament where um Joshua's like, hey, go get some stones.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: We're gonna put it right in the middle of our our town.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: And when your kids ask what this is about, you're gonna tell them what God did here, right?
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: There's those visual uh Ebenezers, like there's those reminders in our lives that like God was faithful then.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: And so as I pass by this pile of stones on the way to the hospital, right?
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: As I pass by this on the way to a job interview, right, whatever, like I have to remember that God was faithful there.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: I think maybe for us our Ebenezer is is what's right here on the on the pages.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: I think for me it's it's being reminded daily that there's a God who who was and is and is to come that was that held all this in his hand.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: Like he wasn't freaked out at all, right?
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: That there were 4,000 people that were hungry.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: At all.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: And so um while we get wrapped up in the oh, oh my goodness, like this this issue or this problem or this diagnosis or whatever is so big, for me it's setting those those reminders that are that are touchstones in our lives, but then also having scripture to be able to daily inform us that, like, hey, it's all good.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: And then if you want to go to the next step and you journal about it, like I've got buddies that that prayer journal and they flip back for years and they're like, oh my goodness, like I've been praying about this same thing for seven years now and God just moved on it.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: Or or or I I can't believe that I'm still struggling with the same thing after X number of years.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: Um as that reminder that that God God is faithful and God is moving, so that we don't get so wrapped up in the in the size of the problem or the size of the um the distance between what we have and what is needed that we forget that there's a a God who's who's got it all.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: All in his hands.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: That sounds very churchy, right?
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: Read your scripture, pray and journal about it.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: But I mean, truly, those are those are the things that uh the daily remind us.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, of course.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: Is that fair?
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: I think so.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, he invites us into this.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: Certainly we we want, and now probably more than ever, we want the things we want when we want them.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we don't like waiting for things.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: And sometimes I'd I think probably we don't we just want even if from a measure of faith, like God, you just you do you take care of this because I don't I don't want to, you know, or I don't know how to.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: So you I think you see in this lesson even Jesus ha he's making them not making them, but kind inviting them in to be a part of this process.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: He could have done this himself, yeah.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: But he he draws them in.
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: I wonder if this scenario had played out 10, 15 more times, right?
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: Like with with repetition and with some like okay, like would this same conversation have happened, like on the the feeding of the 5,000 12.0, right?
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: Like the 12th time they gather and they're like, okay, all right, you guys know what to do, grab your stuff, who's got the baskets pick up leftovers, because we know there's gonna be a lot of them, right?
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: So that may even be part of it too.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: Like, if in in in our walk, as we are continually experiencing and reminding, like, okay, God, God is faithful.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: Like, let's let's say we start out with God, the feeding of the five, right?
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: The feeding of the four, right?
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: How are we gonna do this?
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: Okay, oh, God was faithful with that, and then as we continue to say to grow our faith, but really as we continue to step into that trust with God that He was faithful with the small things, and now we're gonna give Him everything we have, which is what these guys did, not just in the bread that they gave in this story, but their lives, right, in the in the coming years, literally gave it all for them.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: Would they at this point have given all?
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: But it's in that daily walk that they're realizing this Jesus guy, he is he is not what we thought, but he's exactly what we needed.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: That's great.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: That's a great point.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: And you see, even towards the end and the death, they scatter.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, they're not who knows what they're ready for at that moment in time, and it's it's really that the resurrection which kind of changes everything.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: But I think that's a great point about that journey of even for them, it's easy to look back in the story and oh, if I would have seen that, I totally would have believed and never doubted.
- 26:17SPEAKER_01: But what is it that we still see all the time today?
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: Right and and you know, the next day comes and we're still worried about that thing, or we're still thinking, oh, God doesn't have this.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: So it's just interesting.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't know, go down too far because next week's lesson is is all about that, right?
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: It's all about the the doubt and the faith and that kind of stuff.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: Um but no, I I I think you're I think you're absolutely right that there's gotta be a a faith that is walked out and there there is the the gifting of the Holy Spirit also that happens after after Jesus you know leaves us.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: Pretty big game changer.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: And that that's when we see the boldness of Peter and those rest of the guys like getting after it and leaning into it and doing some pretty cool stuff.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: So the the disciples does that give you seeing their reaction here and maybe even seeing them wrestle with trust or surrender, or even let's if we just look at them not maybe wanting to feed these people who are not like them, it could be even just some of that.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: Um does that give you what does that do for your faith or your thinking through you know of their reaction?
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: It um it's comforting knowing that God literally use anybody, right?
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: So there's moments where um I sit in my office or or Scott and I, like you and Scott and I, like some of us will sit around and we'll we'll look at all the baptisms that have taken place, all the life change, the the marriages that have been restored, like those little conversations, the way that God has shown up, and and we look at each other like, how are we a part of this?
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: Like, like it's truly, it's not about us, it's not nothing we bring, but like God uh uh uh allows us to be a part of this.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: Um leading a congregation, serving a congregation, serving a community that is experiencing Christ in new ways.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: I think just because we said, well, we got some bread here, like is that is that helpful?
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: We got a couple little fishes.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: Um, but when you look at these guys, they're they're not the the the guys that you probably would have picked for an all-star team.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: Uh, but man, they're the ones who who get it done, who follow Jesus, right?
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: Who love with their heart, who figure it out and mess up a lot, uh, but but God has has patience with and continues to lead them.
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: It's it's pretty humbling.
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah and it's very encouraging.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: Even thinking about uh when when Peter and John, they they heal the guy at the temple gate called Beautiful, they're called in for the Sanhedrin, they they testify, they they're kicked out.
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: And those guys are sitting around looking at each other, like, how are these ordinary idiots, right?
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: This is the word they use.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: How are they able to do this?
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: God says, I'm gonna use the simple to confound the wise, right?
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: That's good.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: Simple.
- 28:59SPEAKER_00: I don't know if I'm confounding anybody, but we're gonna do some incredible stuff, just uh just being being humble and quiet and keep moving.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, sharing our bread.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: Oh man, that's a great takeaway, man.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be awesome.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: Sunday is gonna be awesome.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: It will be.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: There's a lot more fun stuff to dig in here uh for for Sunday.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: We're gonna save some of it.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but I think the message is uh is is applicable and practical, it's encouraging, and it's it's good stuff, man.
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: Cool.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: Can't wait, man.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, thanks for being here and taking the time out.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: Thank you guys for joining us, and uh, we'll be continuing on week two of Questions of Jesus and it might be a familiar story, but I promise just being in that room, being connected, getting to worship.
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: Um, I was just thinking when you were talking about those reminders, there's so much about even what we get to sing, because there are many, many days where you're like, hey, I don't really feel like this.
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: You know, you're singing about all these things God has done, his faithfulness, and and we praise him, and there's just a reality of like, hey, I I'm struggling today, or I'm not feeling this.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: So I'm always reminded and in some of those songs that it's not about how we're feeling, it's about what he's done and is doing.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: And it's okay to sing that if you're not feeling it because you know he's he's still inviting you into that story.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: And so same kind of thing about those those maybe simple or um practical ways that we connect with him that that really has the the power to shape our heart, to change our change our day and stuff.
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: That's exciting.
- 30:31SPEAKER_01: Alright, guys.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: We'll see y'all Sunday.
