- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, welcome back to SEC Football Addiction. We are
- 0:02Speaker 1: presented by PrizePix. I've got Chris Phillips, SEC Unfiltered. And
- 0:06Speaker 1: before we talk about anything else, Chris, how good does
- 0:08Speaker 1: it feel to have football back?
- 0:10Speaker 2: Dude, I'm so grateful that we've actually got football on
- 0:13Speaker 2: our teams. Week zero hit like crack.
- 0:14Speaker 3: By the way. It was incredible.
- 0:16Speaker 4: That Dublin game?
- 0:17Speaker 3: I mean, it was funny. The games don't even have
- 0:20Speaker 3: to be that good.
- 0:20Speaker 2: If that game's taking place in like week seven or eight,
- 0:23Speaker 2: that Dublin game's a snooze fest, putting me to sleep.
- 0:26Speaker 2: But just because it was kind of the first college
- 0:29Speaker 2: football game of the season I was glued to that
- 0:31Speaker 2: like I was watching the Super Bowl so yeah the
- 0:33Speaker 2: fact that we get you know obviously that was the
- 0:35Speaker 2: appetizer now we get the main course and we're off
- 0:38Speaker 2: and running so it just you.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Know after a long long.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Offseason TJ full of TROs and injunctions and protect college
- 0:46Speaker 2: sports acts and etc etc I'm so happy that we're
- 0:50Speaker 2: just getting to football.
- 0:52Speaker 1: You know, we were going to talk games, but I
- 0:53Speaker 1: do want to– we're fine. You just told me how
- 0:56Speaker 1: grateful you are that football is back, but here I
- 0:58Speaker 1: go back down the TRO route. The SEC said that
- 1:02Speaker 1: they're going to comply with what was said in this
- 1:04Speaker 1: whole pro player drama that's going on, but that they
- 1:10Speaker 1: were going to fight on Thursday, that they were not
- 1:12Speaker 1: going to lay down.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Man, I don't, I mean, LSU certainly is, is not
- 1:17Speaker 1: going to run guys out there that were in the
- 1:19Speaker 1: NFL in this game.
- 1:20Speaker 4: One, right.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Or, or, or are they like, do they, do you
- 1:23Speaker 1: think they want some resolution so they don't end up
- 1:25Speaker 1: screwing themselves for later? We haven't heard from the CFP
- 1:29Speaker 1: if they're going to do anything like, what do you
- 1:31Speaker 1: think is going to happen this weekend? I know the
- 1:33Speaker 1: answer to that is who the hell knows, but give
- 1:35Speaker 1: me your take here.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Well, I think what's interesting is there's a lot of
- 1:40Speaker 2: layers to it, TJ, and you just laid them out,
- 1:41Speaker 2: but You have to ask yourself, is the juice worth
- 1:45Speaker 2: the squeeze here? I think that if you can remove
- 1:48Speaker 2: the biases, whichever way you have them for Lane Kiffin,
- 1:51Speaker 2: if you listen to the words that he said and
- 1:52Speaker 2: you take them at face value, he has said here lately, hey,
- 1:55Speaker 2: we've been in constant communication with the SEC. Everything that
- 1:58Speaker 2: we're doing, essentially, they're running by them, and then that's
- 2:00Speaker 2: how they're operating. So I would assume the moment they
- 2:04Speaker 2: get first word that, hey, if you play these guys,
- 2:07Speaker 2: a negative outcome is possible, meaning we just saw some news,
- 2:11Speaker 2: as you and I were about to talk about, Maybe
- 2:13Speaker 2: teams are going to boycott games or maybe there will
- 2:16Speaker 2: be penalties enforced, whatever.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Here's the deal.
- 2:18Speaker 2: LSU fans applaud this because they say, I love that
- 2:21Speaker 2: my head coach is doing everything possible to produce wins.
- 2:25Speaker 2: He's doing everything possible to strengthen the roster. He's doing
- 2:28Speaker 2: exactly what he's paid to do and what a coach
- 2:30Speaker 2: should do. But the moment where The things that he's
- 2:34Speaker 2: doing could potentially harm LSU football.
- 2:37Speaker 3: I think that's when you got to pull back.
- 2:38Speaker 2: So it feels like a situation of who is going
- 2:41Speaker 2: to budge first necessarily, right? So I do not think,
- 2:45Speaker 2: because again, you think for the long term, it almost
- 2:48Speaker 2: feels like TJ, it's not even about the players anymore.
- 2:50Speaker 2: It's almost like two sides are both peacocking and one
- 2:54Speaker 2: just wants to kind of, you know, puff their chest
- 2:56Speaker 2: out of the other. And I, you know, we'll see
- 2:57Speaker 2: what happens on Thursday, what the resolution is. And I
- 3:00Speaker 2: know it's more than an LSU thing, TJ. I can't
- 3:03Speaker 2: stress that enough. LSU fans will come down or jump
- 3:06Speaker 2: down your neck for saying that.
- 3:07Speaker 3: It's all LSU.
- 3:08Speaker 2: It's not just LSU, but they have become essentially the
- 3:11Speaker 2: official mascots of this thing. Like they have become the
- 3:14Speaker 2: poster child of this. Lane Kiffin has been the most outspoken.
- 3:18Speaker 2: LSU is the biggest brand tie to this thing. But
- 3:20Speaker 2: certainly I think there's almost, if not 300 players that
- 3:23Speaker 2: are fighting this. So I think you have to believe
- 3:27Speaker 2: that at the moment that Lane Kiffin and LSU stop
- 3:31Speaker 2: and think to themselves, this could be a negative. This
- 3:33Speaker 2: could be something that penalizes us down the stretch that
- 3:36Speaker 2: gets in the way of our ultimate goal, which is
- 3:38Speaker 2: making the college football playoff competing for a national championship.
- 3:42Speaker 2: I think that's when you've got to retreat and wave
- 3:44Speaker 2: the white flag. Cause I mean, let's face it, DJ,
- 3:46Speaker 2: it'd be one thing if this was over Sam Leavitt,
- 3:49Speaker 2: but it's not, it's a guy that's going to be
- 3:50Speaker 2: in the tight end rotation and the defensive line rotation.
- 3:54Speaker 2: It's really not going to impact their football team one
- 3:57Speaker 2: way or another, which is why I keep thinking Is
- 3:59Speaker 2: there more to this? Is there some LSU wants to
- 4:02Speaker 2: stick it to the SEC type of mentality? And I
- 4:05Speaker 2: don't know if that's the case. But, yeah, we got
- 4:07Speaker 2: a mess on our hands. I'm curious to see who
- 4:09Speaker 2: wins out in the end, LSU versus the SEC. Who
- 4:12Speaker 2: knew that would be a talking point? And, TJ, you
- 4:15Speaker 2: know as well as I do, I know we're probably
- 4:16Speaker 2: going to talk about it, the LSU-Clemson game. If LSU
- 4:19Speaker 2: comes out sluggish or they struggle, and even if it's
- 4:22Speaker 2: in a win– You know as well as I do
- 4:25Speaker 2: people are going to point to this and say, well,
- 4:27Speaker 2: if LSU had been focused on the task at hand,
- 4:29Speaker 2: maybe they would have played better.
- 4:30Speaker 3: They would have looked better. You know it's coming. It's
- 4:33Speaker 3: the inevitable.
- 4:33Speaker 2: So, yeah, it's an absolute mess. TJ, I'm to the point,
- 4:37Speaker 2: last thing on it, I don't even care who trots
- 4:39Speaker 2: out there anymore. At kickoff, TJ, just hand me a roster,
- 4:44Speaker 2: and I will gladly watch and talk about those guys
- 4:46Speaker 2: on the field.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Just get me to the games at this point.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I was enjoying FCS football on Friday night with
- 4:53Speaker 1: William and Mary and all that.
- 4:55Speaker 3: For the love of the game, TJ. For the love
- 4:57Speaker 3: of the game.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I just want to see guys hit each other. I mean,
- 5:00Speaker 1: we all have our opinions on what's right, what's wrong.
- 5:03Speaker 1: We all have our opinions, but just get me to Saturday.
- 5:06Speaker 4: The SEC, I guess, on Thursday night with Missouri. But
- 5:09Speaker 4: get me to this week's football.
- 5:10Speaker 3: TJ, we're getting closer to the breaking point in college football.
- 5:13Speaker 3: That is for darn sure. We are. We are.
- 5:16Speaker 2: We're not going to go another five years with issues
- 5:18Speaker 2: like this arising.
- 5:19Speaker 3: It's something that's got to give at some point.
- 5:22Speaker 1: What I think my final thought on, and we'll talk
- 5:24Speaker 1: about the game, is exactly what you just said. And
- 5:26Speaker 1: I know these situations are different, so I know the
- 5:28Speaker 1: LSU fans, don't mishear me on this and think that
- 5:30Speaker 1: these are the same situations. It's almost like you've got
- 5:32Speaker 1: to apologize before you say something. When the Big 12
- 5:36Speaker 1: stepped in, Texas tech kept fighting and Swordsby kept fighting.
- 5:39Speaker 1: And when the big 12 stepped in and said, Hey,
- 5:41Speaker 1: this ain't going to happen. You saw how quickly they
- 5:44Speaker 1: backed off. And I almost wonder, like you just said,
- 5:46Speaker 1: if LSU, I think it was a great point by you.
- 5:49Speaker 1: If LSU really knows that there's a real detriment, whether
- 5:51Speaker 1: the college football playoff committee says something or the sec
- 5:54Speaker 1: is able to get a small winning court.
- 5:56Speaker 4: And that's where you'll see LSU say, Hey man, we tried,
- 5:58Speaker 4: we tried to do it for you. We're out, man.
- 6:00Speaker 4: Like let's go be Clemson's ass.
- 6:01Speaker 1: So Speaking of that, let's talk about actual football because
- 6:04Speaker 1: that's coming this week too. Thankfully, the biggest week zero
- 6:08Speaker 1: matchup was LSU versus the SEC.
- 6:09Speaker 4: I like that. The Clemson Tigers come to town.
- 6:13Speaker 1: So I know you kind of represent, not kind of,
- 6:15Speaker 1: you represent the SEC side of things. Personally, I think
- 6:18Speaker 1: Clemson is going to be a little bit better than
- 6:20Speaker 1: people are giving them credit for. Now, I don't think
- 6:22Speaker 1: they're a college football playoff team. I don't even know
- 6:24Speaker 1: that I feel confident that they're going to compete for
- 6:26Speaker 1: the ACC. To me, that feels like it's Miami's and
- 6:29Speaker 1: then everybody else's, but we'll see. I've said that before.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I do think they're going to be better than people think.
- 6:34Speaker 1: They're on the ground, but if they catch these, they
- 6:36Speaker 1: count too. I'm going to take Kiwan Lacy at Ole
- 6:39Speaker 1: Miss to score a touchdown this weekend. I'm going to
- 6:41Speaker 1: take Cam Cook at West Virginia. I think they're going
- 6:44Speaker 1: to be a ground-and-pound type team, and I'm.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Going to take Mark Fletcher.
- 6:47Speaker 1: I think Miami's going to score a ton of points
- 6:50Speaker 1: on the road at Stanford, and he's going to get
- 6:52Speaker 1: in the end zone without a doubt.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Give me all three of them.
- 6:54Speaker 1: You play $ 5 over there on the PrizePix app. Not
- 6:58Speaker 1: only do you get the win, but if you get
- 7:00Speaker 1: that first win, use code HMA, you get 150 in lineups.
- 7:03Speaker 1: So a $ 5 lineup very quickly turns into a massive win.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Go check out the PrizePix app. Make sure you're on
- 7:10Speaker 1: there this season. We appreciate them for their support. And
- 7:14Speaker 1: I do think that they're going to give LSU a
- 7:16Speaker 1: game for as long as LSU will let them hang around.
- 7:19Speaker 4: I think when you think about the.
- 7:22Speaker 4: All of the new pieces.
- 7:23Speaker 1: I don't really think too much about the off-field distraction
- 7:27Speaker 1: stuff because we saw how well Ole Miss locked in
- 7:29Speaker 1: with similar off-season distractions last year in the playoffs. So
- 7:34Speaker 1: I do have a lot of faith in players to
- 7:35Speaker 1: just block that out and go play. But I do
- 7:38Speaker 1: think with all the new pieces and if they don't
- 7:40Speaker 1: start the season super fast, which I know they got
- 7:42Speaker 1: the win in week one last year, but they've historically
- 7:45Speaker 1: not started the season super fast. I think Clemson can
- 7:48Speaker 1: hang around and make this a game far longer than
- 7:51Speaker 1: LSU wants them to. And I think we're in store
- 7:54Speaker 1: for at least a good half to three quarters to
- 7:57Speaker 1: maybe a full game on Saturday.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Yeah, TJ, one quick thing I want to point out, too.
- 8:01Speaker 2: You were mentioning what the College Football Playoff Committee does.
- 8:03Speaker 2: I was just going to add to your point. They
- 8:05Speaker 2: left out Notre Dame for far less. So, yeah, mess
- 8:11Speaker 2: around and see what can happen there. But no, speaking
- 8:14Speaker 2: on the game, I don't think you're wrong here from
- 8:15Speaker 2: the standpoint of all the conversation and chatter has been
- 8:18Speaker 2: around LSU and Lane Kiffin, and I totally get it. And,
- 8:21Speaker 2: you know, college game day in town, Death Valley is
- 8:23Speaker 2: going to be completely unhinged and you know, the top's
- 8:26Speaker 2: going to boil over when toe meets leather on this thing.
- 8:28Speaker 2: And Elaine Kiffin era in Baton Rouge finally gets underway and,
- 8:31Speaker 2: you know, getting to see how all these new pieces come.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Together, especially offensively, I think is the thing that's most fascinating.
- 8:36Speaker 2: I think the thing that gives me confidence, because I
- 8:38Speaker 2: am picking LSU to win this football game.
- 8:41Speaker 3: And I do think they pull away.
- 8:42Speaker 2: I think the only question will be, does LSU cover
- 8:45Speaker 2: a double digit point spread is Blake Baker and that
- 8:48Speaker 2: LSU defense.
- 8:48Speaker 3: I think I have a chance to be really, really special.
- 8:50Speaker 2: And you're asking God for, if you're Clemson and Christopher
- 8:52Speaker 2: Bozina to come in. I, I like the receiver room
- 8:55Speaker 2: for Clemson. I think, like you mentioned, I think they
- 8:58Speaker 2: could be a little bit better than people are expecting.
- 8:59Speaker 2: I just think most people, Dabo Sweeney's no longer getting
- 9:02Speaker 2: the benefit of the doubt, right? Like, I think most
- 9:04Speaker 2: people are fading him. Most people are fading his program.
- 9:08Speaker 2: But they've got some weapons on the outside. It is
- 9:10Speaker 2: a strength for LSU, of course, that secondary. I think
- 9:12Speaker 2: just asking Christopher Vecina against that Clemson defense to come
- 9:16Speaker 2: in and put up big numbers.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Is probably asking too much.
- 9:19Speaker 2: But if it takes some time for LSU to gel offensively,
- 9:22Speaker 2: if Clemson defensively with Sammy Brown leading the way, obviously,
- 9:25Speaker 2: at linebacker. If they can do some things, disrupt some
- 9:29Speaker 2: plays and make some big turnovers, if you will.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Could turn this game on its head.
- 9:33Speaker 2: I mean, we've seen, I've been in Death Valley when
- 9:35Speaker 2: it went from deafening to dead quiet because of the
- 9:38Speaker 2: performance on the field. And that goes for any road atmosphere.
- 9:41Speaker 2: And here's the other thing, too, T.J., I throw in there.
- 9:45Speaker 2: It is so easy to look at this week one
- 9:47Speaker 2: slate in the SEC and say the SEC is going 16-0.
- 9:49Speaker 3: I mean, it is, right?
- 9:51Speaker 2: Like, there's a ton of Dare I say cupcake games
- 9:54Speaker 2: or your typical week ones, if you will, just kind
- 9:57Speaker 2: of easing your way into the season.
- 9:58Speaker 3: And you got the LSU. game, you've got Auburn-Baylor, and
- 10:01Speaker 3: you've got Ole Miss-Louisville.
- 10:03Speaker 2: If we learn anything from week zero or if you've
- 10:05Speaker 2: learned anything over your lifetime being a college football fan,
- 10:08Speaker 2: openers don't always go the way you think they're going.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Because here's the deal. We've never known less about these teams.
- 10:16Speaker 3: than they do right now.
- 10:17Speaker 2: So TJ, I do have the SEC going 16-0. I
- 10:21Speaker 2: am fully prepared for one of the big three games
- 10:24Speaker 2: on opening weekend to not go the way that I
- 10:26Speaker 2: think it's going to go. And I think we need
- 10:29Speaker 2: to imagine a world and accept the reality that there
- 10:31Speaker 2: is a reality where that could be this game down
- 10:33Speaker 2: in Baton Rouge. I am one that I'm not nearly
- 10:37Speaker 2: as high on LSU with some others. I just think
- 10:40Speaker 2: year one, Elaine Kiffin, a lot of new pieces. There
- 10:43Speaker 2: were 50 new players in this roster, a lot of
- 10:44Speaker 2: talented players, but it's going to take some time for
- 10:47Speaker 2: it to gel and for it to mesh. And so
- 10:49Speaker 2: do I think Clemson can make this a close game?
- 10:51Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 10:52Speaker 2: But I just think the optics of asking Christopher Messina
- 10:55Speaker 2: and that offense to go in there, Chad Morris, a
- 10:57Speaker 2: Chad Morris offensive scheme. I mean, I think Blake Baker
- 11:00Speaker 2: is going to run circles around him. So I do
- 11:02Speaker 2: think this could be a close game into the later
- 11:04Speaker 2: stages of the game, but maybe it's a late touchdown
- 11:07Speaker 2: by LSU.
- 11:08Speaker 3: Maybe it's a scoop and score. Maybe it's a pick six,
- 11:10Speaker 3: some big play.
- 11:11Speaker 2: They can make it look like a little bit wider
- 11:12Speaker 2: margin than it was, but I, I have a really
- 11:16Speaker 2: hard time.
- 11:16Speaker 3: I said this on our show, TJ.
- 11:18Speaker 2: I said over the offseason that Clemson had a 0% chance.
- 11:22Speaker 2: I think there's a negative 1,000% chance that Clemson walks
- 11:25Speaker 2: into Baton Rouge and beats LSU in Lane Kiffin's season opener.
- 11:31Speaker 3: I have a really, really hard time picturing that.
- 11:35Speaker 4: Yeah, I like LSU.
- 11:37Speaker 1: I think the Vic Burley situation is actually really big
- 11:40Speaker 1: for this matchup. LSU is going to want to run
- 11:43Speaker 1: the ball to take some of that pressure off of
- 11:45Speaker 1: Levitt and just establish kind of dominance early. And Clemson's
- 11:50Speaker 1: defensive tackle, unfortunately handed them a really good pass on
- 11:53Speaker 1: how to do that with some off field decisions that
- 11:55Speaker 1: will most likely keep him out of this game. I
- 11:58Speaker 1: haven't seen anything that says he's officially out, but I
- 12:00Speaker 1: think everything Dabo stands on and preaches, it would be
- 12:03Speaker 1: pretty surprising if he was like, Oh yeah, he was
- 12:04Speaker 1: suspended the last two weeks of practice and he's back
- 12:07Speaker 1: for our biggest game of the year. I think not
- 12:09Speaker 1: that that one piece is, is why I think LSU wins.
- 12:13Speaker 1: I had them winning this game before he was out.
- 12:16Speaker 1: But if you're just adding another thing on top of it,
- 12:20Speaker 1: I think it's a really tough hill to climb unless
- 12:24Speaker 1: LSU makes mistakes and leaves them in it, which again,
- 12:27Speaker 1: you could say that for every get every single game
- 12:30Speaker 1: that happens this weekend. If you make enough mistakes, whatever
- 12:34Speaker 1: that threshold is to let the other team stick around,
- 12:36Speaker 1: then you're probably in trouble.
- 12:38Speaker 4: So a big win. Do you have a score yet?
- 12:39Speaker 4: Have you done that yet? This way it's early in
- 12:41Speaker 4: the week.
- 12:41Speaker 3: So I don't, I do.
- 12:43Speaker 2: If I'm trying to recall, I'd have to go back
- 12:46Speaker 2: and look. I think my score was something, and I'll
- 12:48Speaker 2: just throw an updated score in here now. It was
- 12:50Speaker 2: a wide margin. Again, I think LSU wins. I think
- 12:54Speaker 2: LSU covers. I'll take LSU 31, Clemson. Oh, no, I
- 12:59Speaker 2: know what my score was. I had them doubling them up.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Give me LSU 34, Clemson 17. I had LSU doubling
- 13:04Speaker 2: up Clemson in this game. Again, I could see a
- 13:07Speaker 2: game 20-17 going into the fourth quarter, but I think
- 13:10Speaker 2: at some point LSU will find their stride And I
- 13:13Speaker 2: just think Clemson will get worn down. And so, you know,
- 13:15Speaker 2: I mean, I think that's Clemson's hope. I don't think
- 13:18Speaker 2: they're going to put up a lot of points against
- 13:19Speaker 2: Blake Baker's defense. Maybe LSU stumbles out the.
- 13:23Speaker 3: Gate, like you mentioned. I mean, maybe it's a TCU situation.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Double-digit penalties over 100 yards and penalty yardage. You just
- 13:29Speaker 2: never know in week ones. But I just think there
- 13:32Speaker 2: are too many things that would have to go right
- 13:34Speaker 2: for Clemson to get a win. Versus LSU, I don't
- 13:38Speaker 2: think the path to victory is as narrow. So I
- 13:40Speaker 2: got 34-17 LSU over Clemson.
- 13:41Speaker 4: Yeah, I was pretty close. I think I had 27-17.
- 13:46Speaker 1: So Clemson covering by that half point, but you're talking
- 13:50Speaker 1: a late touchdown could certainly change that, you know, either way.
- 13:53Speaker 1: I'll get right back to chatting with Chris, but first
- 13:55Speaker 1: I have a three pick for you. Give me three
- 13:58Speaker 1: players to score touchdowns.
