- 0:00I know that there are wicked satanic spirits working on the
- 0:04earth, and that's one of the signs of the last days.
- 0:06Whoever can kill Goliath, King Saul is going to give them the
- 0:11greatest riches. They'll give him his daughter in
- 0:13marriage, and his whole household can be exempt from
- 0:16Texas. David's phenomenal faith comes
- 0:20forward and he says, you know, you come to me with a sword and
- 0:23a shield, and I come to you in the name of God.
- 0:26This passage has been misunderstood to communicate
- 0:29that a woman's presence was viewed as incompatible with the
- 0:33men's ritual of holiness. When Saul's own soldiers heard
- 0:38this command to go and take out the entire town, this this
- 0:41priestly city, they refused. They would not raise a sword
- 0:45against the Lord's priests. Three of her sons actually
- 0:49become military heroes under their uncle King David.
- 0:52You know, he's following this ancient pattern where the kings
- 0:56demonstrate their power by their large harems.
- 0:59Would you, as a widow now like to become my wife and listen to
- 1:02what she does? This is amazing.
- 1:04She bows down with her face on the ground and says hello.
- 1:12Welcome back to Scripture Central.
- 1:14I'm Lynn Hilton Wilson, part of the team that wants to build
- 1:17enduring faith in Jesus Christ by illuminating and defending
- 1:22the Scriptures. And today, welcome back to the
- 1:25Old Testament. We're in First Samuel 17 all the
- 1:28way through Second Samuel 7, and we're looking specifically at
- 1:32the handmaidens and the harems and the heroines, and we've got
- 1:35a lot of those. Today we're going to look at the
- 1:38women who celebrate the conquering battles of Saul and
- 1:41King David. We're going to look at the
- 1:43Mother of David. We're going to look at the girls
- 1:46of Noah. We're going to get a wonderful
- 1:47Abigail again, briefly, and I know I'm the Jezreelite Davidde
- 1:53wife, as well as David sister Azuria, the witch of Endor.
- 1:58It's a fabulous section on these great women.
- 2:02We'll start out in chapter 17 of First Samuel.
- 2:05Do you remember Jesse has all these sons who were off a
- 2:07battle. And so he sends his youngest
- 2:09son, David, to take up some food and see how they're doing.
- 2:13And when he gets there, David hears this announcement from
- 2:20King Saul that whoever can kill Goliath, King Saul is going to
- 2:25give them the greatest, richest. They'll give him his daughter in
- 2:28marriage and his whole household can be exempt from Texas.
- 2:32Well, as you know, David has great faith.
- 2:36And as that Philistine giant comes down, it says 40 days.
- 2:42I don't know if that's literal or, or just meaning for a long
- 2:45period of time, But David's phenomenal faith comes forward
- 2:50and he says, you know, you come to me with a sword and a shield
- 2:53and I come to you in the next name of God of Israel.
- 2:56And it's a beautiful experience for the Israelites and it's
- 3:01tragic for the Philistines. Their hero is slain and they
- 3:05they depart. But after the battle is when the
- 3:08women come in. And this happens often times
- 3:10after the battle, but it's not always written up in Scriptures.
- 3:13But in this time, First Samuel 18, we learned about the
- 3:16celebrating women who are playing their instruments and
- 3:18singing. Saul has slain his thousands and
- 3:22David his 10s of thousands. Well, this public honor of
- 3:26David's victory over Goliath did not go well with our jealous
- 3:31king, and this spontaneous celebration actually caused a
- 3:37lot of problems, unfortunately. And Saul's jealousy began with
- 3:43this murderous obsession of David.
- 3:46And the text describes how these these honest women's praise of
- 3:52military achievements inadvertently really did trigger
- 3:56the King's descent, I think, into almost madness.
- 4:00And and so David is usually on the run, but he's still doing
- 4:04the work of God. He's still an anointed king.
- 4:07And as part of this tour of David's mighty men that are
- 4:12traveling with him, sort of like rebels, they are hungry and they
- 4:16go to where the Tabernacle is at Nob.
- 4:19Now, archaeologists don't know exactly where this is, but it's
- 4:22just probably close to north of Jerusalem, a few miles.
- 4:26And David's troop goes to visit the priest Ahimelech at the
- 4:31Tabernacle. And you know the the priest
- 4:34says, I, I, I don't want to give you this food just in case your
- 4:37men have been with women. We've got to keep you richly
- 4:41pure. Well, David says, no, when the
- 4:43men are with me, we are chased. There is there is no harlotry or
- 4:48anything else going on here. Well, that was enough that the
- 4:55priest said, OK, you can have this bread.
- 4:58Now. This is a delicate spot here.
- 5:01Because his men desperately needed food, the priest really
- 5:06was reluctant to give them the holy bread, just in case the men
- 5:09were not worthy to eat it. But even in the sacred
- 5:12Tabernacle, this unleavened loaf had recently been replaced,
- 5:16probably with the fresh bread. And so these older loaves were
- 5:19given to David and his men. Now, they were still holy and
- 5:24they still required reverence. And so the King James Version
- 5:28adds that David's men of war had been sexually absence for three
- 5:32days. Then.
- 5:34Now, that's not found in most translations, however, and it's
- 5:36not in some of the ancient Hebrew texts.
- 5:39So we really don't know what that period of time was, but
- 5:43this call for complete abstinence, it was very
- 5:46appropriate for the single men. Now, the married men, of course,
- 5:49if they've been away from from their wives during the time of
- 5:52war, they are having absence. The problem is this passage has
- 5:56been misunderstood to communicate that a woman's
- 5:59presence was viewed as incompatible with the men's
- 6:03ritual of holiness. The Law of Moses does not
- 6:06require that. However, even in legitimate
- 6:09marital relationships, Levitical purity of washing was required.
- 6:14And in a different interpretation of this story,
- 6:17Jesus actually cites this story to illustrate the human need
- 6:22could supersede the ritual requirements.
- 6:25Anyway, David receives the bread his men are fed and we have the
- 6:30tragic ending of the priest because when Saul found out that
- 6:38he had helped David and that he even allowed David to have the
- 6:41sword of Goliath that David had received after killing taking
- 6:47off Goliath's head, King Saul in one of his rages of of horror
- 6:53goes and kills everyone in this little town of Nob.
- 6:57The priests, they're women, they're children.
- 6:59It's absolutely tragic when Saul's own soldiers heard this
- 7:04command to go and take out the entire town this this priest
- 7:08city, they refused. They would not raise a sword
- 7:11against the Lord's priests. However, one of the groups that
- 7:16were fighting for Saul were not Israelites.
- 7:20They were Edomites dog and he executed 85 priests and
- 7:26massacred every person and animal in the city according to
- 7:29the First Samuel 22. So these women have nob died as
- 7:34innocent victims of Salt's paranoid rage.
- 7:38You know, their deaths just demonstrate how far a king had
- 7:41fallen from God's favor. You know, and I just have to
- 7:45step back and say the Lord is omniscient, but he gives all of
- 7:50us a chance. And Saul had the potential for
- 7:54greatness and for horror, and unfortunately he did not.
- 7:58He allowed these unhealthy things to take over, and he
- 8:03became a servant of the devil. In First Samuel 22, we have a
- 8:07reference to David's mother, which is so nice.
- 8:09We hear a lot about Jesse, his dad, but David wants to make
- 8:12sure that he has careful provision for his mother's
- 8:15safety. I just love this.
- 8:17So all these years that he's just a refugee and he's
- 8:20demonstrating his parental devotion even amid his own
- 8:24personal danger by prioritizing his mom's security, and he
- 8:31arranges with the king of the Moabites to take his mom.
- 8:35Now, I thought it was interesting that he goes to the
- 8:37Moabites because remember, David has a genetic tie to the
- 8:42Moabites through his great grandmother Ruth the Moabitus.
- 8:47So he goes there first Samuel, chapter 22, verse three.
- 8:50Let my father and my mother, I pray thee come forth and be with
- 8:54you till I know what God will do for me.
- 8:59Our next wonderful heroine is one of my absolute favorites,
- 9:03Abigail and as we look at First Samuel chapter 25 and then she's
- 9:08referred to multiple times Second Samuel first Chronicles.
- 9:11I have all these on my hand out she is her first husband is
- 9:16Nabel. He's a cableite.
- 9:17And after that she becomes King David's second wife or third
- 9:22wife. Her name likely comes from this
- 9:24Hebrew word that means father and rejoices.
- 9:27So my father is a joy or my father's exaltation.
- 9:30But her husband's name means fool or vile in Hebrew.
- 9:36But he's a very wealthy landowner.
- 9:38He's got all these herds, 3000 sheep, thousand goats.
- 9:42This is all in chapter 25. And he refuses to help David
- 9:47during the sheep shearing season.
- 9:49Now, this is a time when you're supposed to be very generous to
- 9:51all these wandering bands of warriors, and it's a social
- 9:55obligation to help people out. Also, David had been protecting
- 10:00Enabled's lands in and out of all of his battles, so not only
- 10:04was Nabal rude, but he was actually making a very dangerous
- 10:08breach in ancient Near Eastern hospitality customs.
- 10:12You know, this potentially was an act of treason against
- 10:15Israel's future king. I think it's interesting that
- 10:18Abigail wants to respond, and one of the servants comes and
- 10:22tells Abigail, which lets me know that the servants knew who
- 10:25had the clear head in the family.
- 10:28And she immediately gathers 200 loaves of bread, 2 skins of
- 10:33wine, 5 prepared sheep. I don't know how you can do that
- 10:36kind of thing immediately, but she has all this roasted grain,
- 10:40100 clusters of raisins, 200 cakes of figs, you know, just an
- 10:44enormous amount of food. She goes to David to restrain
- 10:48him and she gets there in time and effectively convinces him to
- 10:54save him from an act that I think would have compromised his
- 10:57moral claim to be a king. So David then moves on and
- 11:01Abigail goes back to her husband, but her husband only
- 11:06lives for 10 more days. We aren't told exactly the cause
- 11:09of the death except for the Lord took him.
- 11:13David then praises the Lord for keeping him from violence and
- 11:18for bringing Nabel's wickedness back on his own head, you know,
- 11:22but she he then sent messengers back to Abigail and said, would
- 11:26you as a widow now like to become my wife and listen to
- 11:30what she does. This is amazing.
- 11:31This is chapter 25 verse 41. She bows down with her face on
- 11:36the ground and says, I am your servant and I am ready to serve
- 11:39you and wash the feet of my Lord's servants.
- 11:44She is amazing. This is the MIV translation, you
- 11:47know. Her response was remarkable
- 11:49humility, especially for a woman with such high social and
- 11:52economic standing. So Abigail becomes his wife.
- 11:55Abigail travels with David as long as well as his other wife,
- 11:59Ahinanam. She's a Jezreelite now.
- 12:02Last week we learned about David as a young man marrying his
- 12:06teenage sweetheart, Michael Saltz younger daughter.
- 12:11When David's gone around to battles, remember, Saul took her
- 12:15and gave her to somebody else. And so they call Abigail the
- 12:20second wife and Anne Hanion the first wife.
- 12:23This Jezreelitis, although really it's now there's 3.
- 12:28When Abigail comes to be David's wife, she brings with her five
- 12:31maid servants. This is demonstrating both of
- 12:35her substantial wealth as well as her practical necessity of
- 12:39maintaining a noble woman's household.
- 12:41But within a few years Saul dies and David is made king in
- 12:47Hebron. So Abigail accompanies David
- 12:50there as well as his other wives, and Abigail bears David's
- 12:55second son there. His name is Chiliab, Second
- 12:58Samuel, chapter 3, verse 3. He's also called Daniel, by the
- 13:02way, in in chronicled. So I don't know if she has two
- 13:04sons or if they just mixed up this name.
- 13:06I don't. I don't know sometimes because
- 13:08throne names are different than the scribal variant or nickname.
- 13:11I don't know. But she is not known by her name
- 13:15for the rest of the Bible record, only as one of David's
- 13:18wives. From then on, as we leave
- 13:20Abigail and Hananon up in Hebron, we can go back to First
- 13:24Samuel 26 and read about David's sister, Zohuya.
- 13:29I don't know if she's older or younger, but we have her name
- 13:33mentioned multiple times. Remember, she grew up in
- 13:35Bethlehem. It's this tiny little pastoral
- 13:37town. She was probably just like
- 13:40everyone else there, a daughter of a shepherd.
- 13:42She would have worked with the sheep, spinning the wool, making
- 13:45cheese, you know, she most likely was also helping in the
- 13:48springtime and the lambing season.
- 13:50But her name is always attached to her children rather than her
- 13:54husband's because of her relationship to King David.
- 13:58And it happens, you know, a dozen times.
- 14:01Three of her sons actually become military heroes under
- 14:04their uncle King David. Now, since David is the youngest
- 14:08son, I don't know how far apart these uncles are with a large
- 14:12family. They could actually be the same
- 14:14age, but they might be younger. Zerui's three sons are Joab,
- 14:19this wonderful captain who's very fiercely loyal to his Uncle
- 14:23David, and then Abishai and Abashel.
- 14:26Now this youngest Abashel was very, very fast, it says as
- 14:30fleet footed as a wild gazelle. But in one of his escapades
- 14:35defending his uncle David, he is killed by Abner.
- 14:39That's second Samuel too. The next group of women is a
- 14:42tragic reference. This is in First Samuel chapter
- 14:4527 verse 9 and also verse 11 as David is raiding and going
- 14:51through amongst the Philistines and the Lord had told him to
- 14:55kill everyone and whether he's in the Girgasites or the
- 14:59Amalekites or whatever, on these raids these women are being
- 15:02killed as well and these unnamed women died in campaigns
- 15:06revealing the very harsh reality of of military at that time.
- 15:11The next woman in our chapters is when Saul is a very old man
- 15:18and he goes to visit the witch of Endor.
- 15:22Now I'm just going to call her the woman of Endor.
- 15:25I don't want to put that title on her, but she had a history of
- 15:28being some sort of a medium between seances and the other
- 15:32world. Now she's a very controversial
- 15:35figure in Israel. In fact, witches were denounced
- 15:38in the Law of Moses. And this is Exodus chapter 22.
- 15:41I don't know if you remember this in the NIV it reads do not
- 15:44allow a sorceress to live. And King Saul in his earlier
- 15:48days trying to obey God had previously cut off all those
- 15:53that had quote familiar spirits or Wizards out of the land.
- 15:57This is for Samuel 28. But he eliminated them until he
- 16:03desperately needed one. And then he starts looking for
- 16:07one because he's he can't get an answer from God.
- 16:09The text says he couldn't get an answer through dreams by the
- 16:13Urim nor by prophets. Now I want to explain some of
- 16:16these dreams are used by God and A and it's a source that the
- 16:22Israelites trusted. If God is going to speak to a
- 16:26new dream like he did to Joseph, like he did to Daniel, then we
- 16:30can trust him now. Obviously this is way before
- 16:32Daniel but dreams are a trusted medium now.
- 16:36The Urim we know from back in Exodus when the high priest was
- 16:40dressed in addition to the breastplate with the 12 Stones,
- 16:44there was a pouch where the Urim and Thummim 2 extra stones were
- 16:49kept. So Saul, I guess had approached
- 16:53the high priest and asked, I don't know, but no answer came
- 16:57to him. Now the last one that he tried
- 16:59was it says prophets. Now he's not talking to Samuel.
- 17:02Samuel said I will not speak to you again after his wickedness.
- 17:05This prophet that's mentioned there in chapter 28 verse 6
- 17:10refers to people who either have the the the gift of prophets
- 17:14prophecy or one that you know there's multiple prophets at the
- 17:17same time. It could also be one who's going
- 17:19to foretell of the future. Oftentimes in the Scripture,
- 17:23though, in the Bible, a prophet is one who has the gift of
- 17:26prophecy or the knowledge that Jehovah is their God.
- 17:30Now my question is because Samuel's not speaking to him, I
- 17:35don't know how many prophets of Jehovah he's going to.
- 17:37Is he going to a prophet of another God?
- 17:40You know, he's not in, he's not in his right mind at this time,
- 17:45but he finds this sorcerer and he or sorceress and he goes to
- 17:50her and says, I want you to call up Samuel.
- 17:54Now, the text is difficult to read, but humans do not conjure
- 17:59up the dead unless they are satanic spirits.
- 18:03But you can do not, you know, humans do not call up the dead
- 18:07who are servants of God. So this sorceress says she sees
- 18:12something, but everything she says that Samuel dictated this
- 18:16is he's already said before, he's already made these
- 18:19prophecies. This is for Samuel, chapter 12,
- 18:22chapter 13, chapter 15. You know, everything she said,
- 18:26he said, we already have recorded in the text.
- 18:29So Saul's paranoia may have led him to trust the woman to
- 18:35believe that she saw this. Or there is a counterfeit spirit
- 18:39that comes and just recites the things that had already been
- 18:42stated by the prophet of God. I know that there are wicked
- 18:47satanic spirits working on the earth and that's one of the
- 18:49signs of the last days. It's not only in the Book of
- 18:52Mormon, but it's in the Book of Revelation.
- 18:54It's in the it's in latter day prophecy.
- 18:57Wicked spirits are working on this earth.
- 19:00But we know that the prophet Samuel is not able to be called
- 19:05up by a wicked source, especially since he said, I will
- 19:10not speak to you Saul again. Whatever this witch or medium of
- 19:13Endor was able to say, Saul believed her.
- 19:18And even though these prophecies had already been given, now that
- 19:21he heard them again, he's absolutely devastated.
- 19:24You know, he prostrates himself on the ground.
- 19:26He's he. She realizes that he, whatever
- 19:30she said or did, has really taken him down.
- 19:34And so she kindly talks to him. And I want to read First Samuel
- 19:372821 from the NIV. Look, your servant has obeyed
- 19:42you. I took my life into your hands
- 19:46and I did what you told me to do.
- 19:47Now please listen to your servant and let me give you some
- 19:52food that you can eat and get some strength and go on your
- 19:55way. But Saul would not eat.
- 19:58And well, fortunately his servants came and said, King,
- 20:02king, you got to listen to the lady.
- 20:04And finally, he does, with a little coercion.
- 20:06So she does her best. In fact, I think she goes to a
- 20:09lot of work. Did you see what it says?
- 20:10I think she spent hours of effort.
- 20:12She's got to butcher a calf. She's going to make the bread.
- 20:14Well, right there, that tells me these are hours of work to
- 20:18prepare this food. But she's able to prepare enough
- 20:21food for Saul and his men to eat before they leave.
- 20:26And that's the last we hear of her.
- 20:28Let's finish up First Samuel chapter 30 And as David is going
- 20:33about on his little raids, his wives and the wives of his
- 20:40military men are they're all in a camp and the enemy come and
- 20:46capture them and and take them away.
- 20:48So when David comes back at the end of his raid, their their
- 20:52tents are empty and he pursues them.
- 20:56They all chase them. They're able to redeem their
- 20:58wives and their captives. They go clear down South to
- 21:02Ziklag and they're able to take everything back that they had
- 21:06lost. It was a great success.
- 21:09But these daughters of the Ziklags then are also taken and
- 21:12these women are captive when these Amalekites had made this
- 21:16capture everyone. I really like the text.
- 21:20It says they were so worried about their women and their
- 21:24children that they wanted to join David on this.
- 21:26Even though they were exhausted. Everyone was grieving their sons
- 21:29and daughters. I just feel like these family
- 21:32ties were important to them anyway.
- 21:34They pursue, they defeat, and it just revealed how deeply they
- 21:40valued their families lives. Well, in second Samuel chapter
- 21:44one, verse 24, we learn that Saul dies and David calls upon
- 21:49all Israel's daughters to mourn for King Saul.
- 21:52So King Saul has been after him trying to kill him for years and
- 21:57his entire life has been at stake multiple times.
- 22:01And yet David's heart is so pure at this time that he says we
- 22:07need to mourn for this Last King.
- 22:10He's he's just amazing to me. To bite Saul's tragic end, David
- 22:15really honored him. His his heart is so pure.
- 22:19He he doesn't have malice and anger.
- 22:22And so this call to public mourning acknowledges the
- 22:24women's traditional role as chief mourners.
- 22:28And they are also called to mourn.
- 22:30Now in second Samuel chapter 4, when King Saul is killed and
- 22:35Jonathan, his son is killed, the nurse who's watching over
- 22:40Jonathan's children is very worried that something's going
- 22:44to happen to these children who now when David woman comes in,
- 22:48they may be killed. She scoops up the little 5 year
- 22:51old and as she's running out, an accident happens and the poor
- 22:56boy becomes lame. You know, I don't know if it's a
- 22:58compound fracture or what happened.
- 23:00But in her desperate attempt to save his life from this
- 23:04perceived danger, which was not a danger.
- 23:08I just think we can see her protective devotion to her young
- 23:11charge and her fear of this David that might eliminate
- 23:16Saul's remaining heirs. But her actions, I really feel
- 23:20we're driven by her loyalty and her instincts.
- 23:24Now, unfortunately, she inadvertently shaped this young
- 23:27man as life, and we'll learn a little bit more about him in
- 23:31Second Samuel 9, when King David actually shows great kindness to
- 23:37Jonathan Seed. For his sake, let's continue on.
- 23:41After the death of Saul in Second Samuel chapter 3, David
- 23:46moves up to Hebron and this becomes the area of his palace,
- 23:51and we have the listed names of his six wives.
- 23:54Then we talked earlier about his first wife Michael had been
- 23:58taken from him. So now we have Ahanyam.
- 24:01And then Abigail is the 2nd. And then #3 was a Princess and
- 24:07her father was a king of a local community.
- 24:10And this is a political marriage.
- 24:13And her name is Maha, and she has a son in Hebron.
- 24:18You might recognize his name, it is Absalon.
- 24:21I think there's an interesting correlation that she is from
- 24:24royalty. She's brought in for a political
- 24:26marriage. She may have been involved in
- 24:29her son wanting to be the heir. I don't know.
- 24:32We'll talk about her more next week.
- 24:34Then the fourth wife is Haga, the 5th wife is Habitat, and the
- 24:386th is Igla. Now we only have two other named
- 24:41women of all these wives, but we do learn that when Saul dies,
- 24:47following this Near Eastern custom, the new king claimed his
- 24:52predecessors household as to legitimize his reign.
- 24:56Now these unnamed women represented God's generous
- 24:58provisions to David, making his idolatry with Bathsheba even
- 25:02more inexcusable. But we're not going to talk
- 25:04about that till next week. But we learned that David then
- 25:08begins to have more wives and concubines in Second Samuel
- 25:12chapter 5. So not only is he taking the
- 25:16wives of Saul, once he moves down to Jerusalem, he has more
- 25:21wives and sons and daughters, daughters in David's expanding
- 25:25harem. You know, he's following this
- 25:27ancient pattern where the kings demonstrate their power by their
- 25:31large harems. But as a member of the Church of
- 25:36Jesus Christ of Larry Saints, we learn another side of this.
- 25:39Not only is David having a very large posterity, but he is
- 25:44following the commandment of God to take these wives.
- 25:48That's section 132. However, the Torah back in
- 25:53Deuteronomy, if you remember this, they denounce the
- 25:57multiplication of wives. It says your king shall not
- 26:00multiply wives to himself so that his heart is not turned
- 26:04away. This is Deuteronomy 1717.
- 26:06And this happens in not only in David's family, but in the next
- 26:10family, especially in Solomon. You know, this foreshadows this
- 26:14family conflict and it it plagues David's household
- 26:18throughout the rest of his reign.
- 26:19And in Second Samuel chapter 6, we're told that David is able to
- 26:25conquer the Jezubite city, and he's going to bring the Ark of
- 26:29the Covenant and the Tabernacle here to Jerusalem.
- 26:33And it's going to become a home there.
- 26:36And he will then be gathering the supplies to build the temple
- 26:39that his son is allowed to build.
- 26:41But when the ark of the covenant comes in in second Samuel
- 26:45chapter 6, David goes out dancing all with all of his
- 26:49might before the Lord says in verse 14 in the BSB translation
- 26:53and 15 says while he and all the House of Israel brought in the
- 26:57ark of the Lord was shouting and the sounding of the ram's horns.
- 27:01This wonderful ceremony that women are taking part in it.
- 27:04And in verse 19, we're told that the women and the men, everyone
- 27:10receives this cake of bread, a good piece of flesh, a flagon of
- 27:14wine. You know, This deliberate
- 27:16inclusion of the women emphasizes their full
- 27:19participation in worship and in these public gatherings.
- 27:22This is very different than the New Testament, but in the Old
- 27:26Testament women were part of these public gatherings and
- 27:29worship, and I think it shows also their equal treatment to
- 27:33affirm the women's standing as members of the community, as
- 27:36they were entitled to have full participation.
- 27:40Now, one of the people who are watching this great celebration
- 27:43is David's first wife, Michael, Saul's younger daughter.
- 27:48Now, remember, she had been taken away from David, given to
- 27:51another man. David calls her back as his
- 27:54wife. But it's not the high school
- 27:57sweethearts anymore. You know, it's not these teenage
- 28:00single. She now has to come in to a
- 28:02polygamous situation and there's a strained relationship.
- 28:06And you can hear it in the text. She's very upset.
- 28:09And she accuses David of dancing without his elegant robes on in
- 28:14the eyes of the handmaidens and of his servants.
- 28:18Well, David doesn't respond very well either.
- 28:21He's he's offended as well. And he defended his inhibited
- 28:25worship by declaring that the servant women's would honor him
- 28:29for his humility before God. You know, I just wonder if some
- 28:33of his words and her words against him sort of harbor some
- 28:36of the different difficulty in the relationship now that it's
- 28:39not just one-on-one. But these are the handmaidens
- 28:44and the harem situation of our ending of First Samuel and
- 28:48beginning of Second Samuel. And next week we look at even
- 28:52more as we start looking at Bathsheba.
- 28:56So join us next week. And I hope that as you strive to
- 29:01understand these difficult stories in the Old Testament,
- 29:03you will call on the Lord and that you can be drawn closer to
- 29:08your God and your Messiah, as these women had to in the
- 29:12ancient world. And I am so grateful for a God
- 29:16who is aware of everyone, even me and you.
- 29:22In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
