- 0:09Speaker 1: Sports Talk, Jay on with us. Jay, a big one
- 0:12Speaker 1: in Atlanta this week. Interesting results that we had last
- 0:16Speaker 1: week all over the country. Before I even talk about
- 0:20Speaker 1: Tennessee and Faison, which maybe this isn't fair to the
- 0:22Speaker 1: Vols fans that tuned in, I was shocked at the
- 0:26Speaker 1: way that Georgia Tech looked against Colorado. And I'm not
- 0:29Speaker 1: trying to dog them. I know they're already playing. But
- 0:31Speaker 1: for a Brent Key team to get dominated in the trenches,
- 0:34Speaker 1: I was by a Colorado team, you know, that Deion's
- 0:37Speaker 1: been fun to cover. But I could not believe that
- 0:40Speaker 1: the way that game went down. And certainly the rest
- 0:43Speaker 1: of the public has reacted to it because Tennessee's a
- 0:45Speaker 1: huge favorite now going into Atlanta.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I was very surprised as well. He's usually very
- 0:51Speaker 2: dominant on the interior line and the trenches. And that
- 0:55Speaker 2: did not happen against Colorado dominated them. I expected the
- 0:59Speaker 2: exact opposite to happen because that's who Georgia Tech's personality
- 1:03Speaker 2: has been since he's been there.
- 1:05Speaker 3: He's a former offensive line coach. I believe he's at Alabama.
- 1:08Speaker 2: So he brought that toughness, and it makes you wonder,
- 1:13Speaker 2: is that who they are, or is he going to
- 1:15Speaker 2: get their fire going for this coming week, and they're
- 1:19Speaker 2: going to start becoming who they are?
- 1:21Speaker 3: It's really hard to say. It might have been.
- 1:24Speaker 2: I'm almost wondering if King quarterback wasn't a little bit
- 1:27Speaker 2: like Diego, that his personality, that toughness is kind of
- 1:31Speaker 2: permeating into that team a little bit. We'll find out, though,
- 1:34Speaker 2: because Tennessee will be a good test for them. If
- 1:38Speaker 2: Tennessee can push them around, Georgia Tech's probably in trouble.
- 1:42Speaker 1: For the rest of the year.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:45Speaker 1: I thought that Mendoza kid played okay. I didn't think
- 1:48Speaker 1: he was terrible. They couldn't run the ball, man. You
- 1:50Speaker 1: talk about a Brent Key coach team, as much as
- 1:52Speaker 1: he's an offensive line guy, like And they went and
- 1:54Speaker 1: got Justice Haynes out of Michigan and Bama before that.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I thought their running game, I thought quarterback might be
- 2:01Speaker 1: a little bit of a drop. You've got a new
- 2:03Speaker 1: guy coming in. You've had King there for so long.
- 2:05Speaker 1: I was shocked at their running game. They didn't have
- 2:08Speaker 1: an offensive touchdown.
- 2:10Speaker 3: That's what they do. Running the ball is what they do.
- 2:13Speaker 1: It was so crazy to me. And I'll tell you,
- 2:17Speaker 1: I want to talk about Tennessee's game against Furman just
- 2:19Speaker 1: a little bit with you, and then we'll talk more
- 2:20Speaker 1: about the Georgia Tech game. But yeah, I was so
- 2:22Speaker 1: shocked by just the way that they could not run
- 2:25Speaker 1: the ball. And I think that if they, man, if
- 2:27Speaker 1: they can't do that this week, again, that ain't going
- 2:30Speaker 1: to be good. Like they're, they're going to need to
- 2:32Speaker 1: figure something out. And, but I do have, I have
- 2:33Speaker 1: a ton of respect. I think Brent Key is one
- 2:35Speaker 1: of the best coaches in the ACC. I know he
- 2:37Speaker 1: lost his quarterback, you know, went to Florida. I know
- 2:40Speaker 1: he lost his offensive coordinator, went to Florida, a lot
- 2:42Speaker 1: of change. And so I get that, right? Like it
- 2:44Speaker 1: may not be the year that you wanted it to be,
- 2:46Speaker 1: but I do think that if there's a coach that's
- 2:48Speaker 1: going to get, you know, on their butts a little
- 2:50Speaker 1: bit and get them playing, I expect them to play better.
- 2:53Speaker 1: The problem is you're playing a much better team, so
- 2:56Speaker 1: will you play better enough to make up for how
- 2:58Speaker 1: good Tennessee is? I watched your reaction. I did a
- 3:01Speaker 1: reaction to Tennessee's win. I know it was just Furman.
- 3:04Speaker 1: I know that's what everybody will say, but if there
- 3:07Speaker 1: were any questions about whether or not Hypo made the
- 3:09Speaker 1: right choice at starting quarterback, I think those have been
- 3:11Speaker 1: pretty well answered, man. Faison looks like the real deal.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Yeah, every little box that I needed checked off, he
- 3:19Speaker 2: checked off, no problem. The things that excited me the most.
- 3:22Speaker 2: I knew he was going to be able to run.
- 3:24Speaker 2: He's a better runner than I knew he was going
- 3:25Speaker 2: to be really good. He's clearly a little bit better
- 3:28Speaker 2: because he's got moves.
- 3:29Speaker 3: He's shifty.
- 3:30Speaker 2: It's not just straight on speed, even though he runs
- 3:33Speaker 2: a 22 mile an hour top speed. So he's got that.
- 3:36Speaker 2: I just didn't know if he had the little shimmy
- 3:38Speaker 2: and the shake, but he did in high school. So
- 3:39Speaker 2: it obviously translated beautifully. But when he made those two
- 3:42Speaker 2: long passes and he didn't overthrow him and he didn't
- 3:46Speaker 2: panic like quarterback's eyes get this big when they see
- 3:49Speaker 2: wide open wide receivers and it's so easy to just
- 3:52Speaker 2: overthrow him but he hit him boom boom twice and
- 3:56Speaker 2: I was like okay that's the way Hinton Hooker always
- 3:58Speaker 2: did it and his ability to run he could be
- 4:02Speaker 2: special he's going to make freshman mistakes I fully expect
- 4:05Speaker 2: that but if you can do that against Furman at
- 4:07Speaker 2: least you got a chance to do it against a
- 4:09Speaker 2: Georgia Tech if you can't do it against Furman you're
- 4:11Speaker 2: not going to do it against anybody.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Yeah without a doubt again not trying to drink so
- 4:15Speaker 1: much Kool-Aid because they were playing a bad opponent but
- 4:17Speaker 1: They did the things that you wanted to see. And
- 4:20Speaker 1: people get on Tennessee, oh, they played a bad opponent. Well,
- 4:22Speaker 1: 90% of the country played bad opponents. So that's just
- 4:26Speaker 1: what this sport is to start. Defensively, also really good. Again,
- 4:31Speaker 1: I understand the opponent. I get that. But I do
- 4:35Speaker 1: think Tennessee's got such a great opportunity here having Furman
- 4:37Speaker 1: week one, Georgia Tech week two, who did not score
- 4:39Speaker 1: an offensive touchdown. And I think they'll be better. But
- 4:42Speaker 1: an offense that's still figuring things out without Buster Faulkner
- 4:45Speaker 1: there as their offensive coordinator. I think Tennessee's got a
- 4:48Speaker 1: really good opportunity to go out and just see more
- 4:50Speaker 1: live reps, see more reps for a team that's not
- 4:54Speaker 1: wearing orange because we all know what these first three
- 4:57Speaker 1: games are building toward. Like we all know what's coming.
- 5:00Speaker 1: And so you, but you just have an opportunity to
- 5:02Speaker 1: work out more kinks. Hey, go out and make some
- 5:04Speaker 1: mistakes against Georgia tech. Try some things that, you know,
- 5:07Speaker 1: may work, may not work and kind of know where
- 5:10Speaker 1: you're at going into that game in Knoxville in a
- 5:12Speaker 1: few weeks.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Yeah, and we're going to be watching Mendoza very closely.
- 5:15Speaker 2: I agree with you. I thought he was a pretty
- 5:17Speaker 2: good player and played pretty well. He's got a nice arm,
- 5:20Speaker 2: but his ankle, I think he had a little bit of,
- 5:22Speaker 2: he tweaked his ankle, and we're going to be keeping
- 5:24Speaker 2: an eye on that.
- 5:26Speaker 3: And usually when you do that, here's what happens.
- 5:29Speaker 2: If it's not too bad, you still have your straight
- 5:31Speaker 2: downline speed, but it's harder for you to cut. And
- 5:35Speaker 2: if you'll remember, you know, King was such a great
- 5:38Speaker 2: runner for Georgia Tech last year, and they had the
- 5:40Speaker 2: offensive coordinator. that I'm wondering how much he played a
- 5:43Speaker 2: role in letting the other running backs really shine because
- 5:47Speaker 2: they were scared to death. King was going to gut
- 5:49Speaker 2: them for 10 or 20 yards up the middle. He
- 5:51Speaker 2: was so tough. Mendoza, if he's got a little bit
- 5:54Speaker 2: of an ankle injury, they may be a little careful
- 5:56Speaker 2: with him. So now you can focus on those really
- 5:58Speaker 2: good running backs. And if their offensive line is not tough,
- 6:01Speaker 2: I mean, I thought Tennessee's defensive line looked good. Now, again,
- 6:05Speaker 2: I always have to preface that when the competition level,
- 6:09Speaker 2: but you know, it's, They had one guy at three sacks, Gilliam. So,
- 6:14Speaker 2: you know, you've got a Jim Knowles defense that's pretty hard-nosed.
- 6:17Speaker 2: You've got the Coach Owings coming in there. And these guys,
- 6:20Speaker 2: I was expecting them to bully Furman. And last year
- 6:23Speaker 2: they wouldn't have. Our defense would have been, well, we
- 6:25Speaker 2: won the game easy. Let's not give them any grief. No,
- 6:28Speaker 2: that defense played well. They threw for 47 yards, dude.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I'll get right back to chatting with Sports Talk Jay.
- 6:33Speaker 1: But first, I want to give some love to Alumni Hall.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Make sure that, one, you are subscribed here to SEC
- 6:37Speaker 1: Football Addiction. Second, make sure that you're saving 15% on AlumniHall.com
- 6:41Speaker 1: or in-store. Code is CFA15. Doesn't sign you up for anything.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Not a subscription. Not something you're paying every week. But
- 6:48Speaker 1: it is AlumniHall.com. Online or in-store works. CFA15. Now back
- 6:52Speaker 1: to Jay. Yeah, the quarterback never looked comfortable. And again,
- 6:57Speaker 1: I know we keep saying it, but it was Furman.
- 6:58Speaker 1: I get that. But they're allowed to play, too. Like
- 7:02Speaker 1: they're allowed to go out and make a play here
- 7:03Speaker 1: or there. I just thought, you know, for, for those
- 7:07Speaker 1: expecting Tennessee's offense to fall off. Now I agree with you.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Faison is going to make some mistakes and he may
- 7:13Speaker 1: make some mistakes in some huge games and it might
- 7:15Speaker 1: cost him, you know, I don't know. Like that's what
- 7:17Speaker 1: freshmen do, but he looks like he has that factor
- 7:20Speaker 1: of being able to run this offense effectively. And I
- 7:24Speaker 1: talked with you about this in the off season. If
- 7:26Speaker 1: there was an offense that you had to put phase
- 7:28Speaker 1: on Brandon into, uh, It would probably be the one
- 7:30Speaker 1: with an offensive line that's as good as this, a
- 7:32Speaker 1: running game that's as good as this, weapons are as
- 7:34Speaker 1: good as this, and a coach who I think the
- 7:37Speaker 1: word elite, you probably hate it because you're a generation
- 7:40Speaker 1: behind me, but I think the word elite gets thrown
- 7:43Speaker 1: around too much. Josh Heupel is elite at putting his
- 7:46Speaker 1: quarterbacks into good situations. He just is. And man, for
- 7:49Speaker 1: a Georgia Tech defense that didn't inspire a whole lot
- 7:52Speaker 1: last week, that's worrisome. I feel like having a Josh
- 7:56Speaker 1: Heupel coach team coming into Atlanta.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Yeah, this is the ideal spot for a freshman to
- 8:04Speaker 2: start because you're playing an offense that a lot of
- 8:07Speaker 2: times you can eliminate one side of the field, you
- 8:09Speaker 2: can spread out, and his ability to run is going
- 8:13Speaker 2: to caution the defense. They're not going to be able
- 8:16Speaker 2: to pin their ears back and just try to go
- 8:18Speaker 2: after him because if they go by him and he
- 8:21Speaker 2: undercuts them, he's going to have 20 yards of fresh-mowed
- 8:24Speaker 2: grass right in front of him and nobody anywhere near him,
- 8:27Speaker 2: and the guy runs a 4-5-40. At 6'4, 230, he's
- 8:32Speaker 2: like a freight train. So that's where they've got to
- 8:35Speaker 2: be super careful. If Georgia Tech gets too aggressive, he'll
- 8:38Speaker 2: just run the ball and gut them. So that's a
- 8:41Speaker 2: huge advantage for a quarterback to have. It's almost like
- 8:45Speaker 2: it makes him difficult.
- 8:47Speaker 1: How much crap have you given the Michigan fans this week?
- 8:51Speaker 3: I haven't been that bad on them over the one-second thing.
- 8:54Speaker 2: I have not been as bad because I've had– see,
- 8:57Speaker 2: Lane– He takes up so much oxygen in the room
- 9:01Speaker 2: that it's even Michigan's like, well, I've already said he
- 9:06Speaker 2: went up to Michigan and said, hold my beer. You know,
- 9:09Speaker 2: you think you can out-spot me?
- 9:13Speaker 3: You're crazy.
- 9:15Speaker 2: So I haven't had to rip them yet. I've given
- 9:18Speaker 2: them grief because I always give Michigan grief. But, I mean,
- 9:20Speaker 2: it's just like I'm almost used to their nonsense up there.
- 9:23Speaker 3: I'm used to it. They cut Ohio State's communications last year. Allegedly,
- 9:30Speaker 3: they did.
- 9:31Speaker 1: The LSU game, all the off the field stuff aside,
- 9:37Speaker 1: what was more surprising? The Western Michigan, keeping it so close,
- 9:41Speaker 1: or LSU just going? I thought it would take time
- 9:44Speaker 1: for LSU to gel. And maybe Clemson is just the
- 9:46Speaker 1: worst team in America. Maybe LSU. But I think LSU
- 9:49Speaker 1: is a serious problem. They are not even off the field.
- 9:53Speaker 1: On the field, they are a problem this year.
- 9:56Speaker 3: They look great. And, of course, that crowd, what a tear.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Place to play it's so brutal and sam there's a
- 10:04Speaker 2: reason why i got so upset when they when he
- 10:07Speaker 2: came up here and took sam levitt even though i'm
- 10:10Speaker 2: i'm happy with phase on i can tell you sam
- 10:12Speaker 2: levitt did exactly what i thought he would do he
- 10:14Speaker 2: would be inconsistent with his arm but good enough and
- 10:17Speaker 2: that he would gut that defense and and score once, twice,
- 10:21Speaker 2: three times because that's what the guy does. He's a
- 10:24Speaker 2: Diego Pavia type guy, and he's a problem. That dude
- 10:29Speaker 2: is a problem. I don't care if he throws for
- 10:31Speaker 2: 60% or not. He's going to hurt you.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Clemson has not been the Clemson of old. They're not.
- 10:38Speaker 1: 51 to 10 bad. Now it's snowballed. Maybe if that
- 10:43Speaker 1: game happens again, their quarterback's not good. And LSU absolutely
- 10:47Speaker 1: jumped all over them. And I'll tell you, I think
- 10:51Speaker 1: we went into the LSU schedule looking at it and saying, well,
- 10:54Speaker 1: they can play Clemson week one. Then they get the
- 10:56Speaker 1: easy game. Then they got to go to Ole Miss.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Then they got to play A & M, which was
- 10:59Speaker 1: a playoff team. I'm now looking at Ole Miss and saying, boys,
- 11:02Speaker 1: y'all better buckle up. And then I'm looking at A
- 11:04Speaker 1: & M saying, boys, y'all better buckle up because this
- 11:06Speaker 1: offense can move. And they're running as good as Levitt was.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Their running game is just as good. Their defense is
- 11:12Speaker 1: ridiculously talented. And again, I just thought, I knew that
- 11:17Speaker 1: LSU's offense would eventually click. I didn't know it would
- 11:19Speaker 1: click like that from drive two. The only reason there
- 11:22Speaker 1: was a hiccup at all is because that ball bobbled
- 11:24Speaker 1: off that guy's hands and Clemson got a field goal
- 11:26Speaker 1: out of it. LSU almost needed that, I feel like, though,
- 11:29Speaker 1: to wake it up. They woke up from that and
- 11:31Speaker 1: they said, great, 51 points, here we go.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Well, the big problem, again, is Sam Levitt is a
- 11:37Speaker 2: special player, and he is great under pressure. I've watched
- 11:43Speaker 2: him under the biggest lights, and he was confident and
- 11:46Speaker 2: cool exactly the way he is, and that spreads through
- 11:49Speaker 2: the offense like a virus. I mean, I'm telling you,
- 11:52Speaker 2: if you've got a confident, mature quarterback who can get
- 11:56Speaker 2: the job done and you know can pull you out
- 11:58Speaker 2: of crap, that changes the whole offense.
- 12:01Speaker 3: I mean, you saw.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Vanderbilt last year with Diego. That whole team was arrogant.
- 12:05Speaker 2: And that's going to go through LSU's team. And then
- 12:09Speaker 2: you've got a coach who's super arrogant in Lane Kiffin.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Those guys right now, he's going to have to tone
- 12:14Speaker 2: them down because right now they're hearing the greatest things
- 12:17Speaker 2: since sliced bread and all those comments. And it's going
- 12:20Speaker 2: to be rat poison for him. So he's going to
- 12:23Speaker 2: almost have to stay on them to say, look, you're
- 12:25Speaker 2: not this good. You're not as good as everybody's saying
- 12:27Speaker 2: because that could be their biggest problem.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Yeah. They are a problem now. And if they– but
- 12:36Speaker 1: you're right. If they read too much in their press clippings,
- 12:38Speaker 1: I can see that happening. But if they get rolling,
- 12:41Speaker 1: they're trouble for a lot of teams. I'll tell you what.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Hey, one great thing. One great thing, TJ, for you
- 12:49Speaker 3: and me. Lane didn't go to Florida.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Oh, gosh. Can you imagine if that had happened, if
- 12:55Speaker 2: Sam Levitt and that whole thing was going on in
- 12:57Speaker 2: Florida right now for us?
- 12:59Speaker 1: Yeah, it wouldn't– we would– I just wouldn't talk about him.
- 13:03Speaker 1: I just– And that'd be terrible for what we do
- 13:07Speaker 1: to not talk about a team. But, yeah, that would
- 13:10Speaker 1: be pretty terrible.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Steve Spurrier 2.0 times on steroids.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Times 100, yeah.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Jay, we appreciate you for hanging out. Sports Talk Jay
- 13:20Speaker 1: over on YouTube. We back. Oh, prediction for this one?
- 13:23Speaker 1: Y'all covering the 13.5 or what are we doing?
- 13:26Speaker 3: Oh, boy.
- 13:26Speaker 2: I tell you, I've said if somebody said if you
- 13:29Speaker 2: take Georgia Tech, I'd want at least 14.
- 13:32Speaker 3: I think that spread's good. Terrific.
- 13:35Speaker 2: I think that's about right for what, you know, unless
- 13:37Speaker 2: there's a bunch of turnovers or something, if turnovers happen, then,
- 13:40Speaker 2: you know, crap, anything could happen, but that feels right
- 13:43Speaker 2: to me.
- 13:45Speaker 3: I think they're right on it.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:47Speaker 1: I think Tennessee wins. I think they cover, I think
- 13:49Speaker 1: it'll find a way to get to 14, 17, somewhere
- 13:52Speaker 1: in there, but it should, should be another, another fun one.
- 13:55Speaker 1: See what their offense looks like. See if the defense
- 13:57Speaker 1: can continue to be strong on the road this week.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Sports talk, Jay over on YouTube, go check him out.
