- 0:02That was better their local music by Carris Now sport Wise on the Telly just
- 0:09last week there was only one sport people were talking about, and that was
- 0:12darts. And there's a young man there that captured the imagination of the whole
- 0:18dark community and so I feel I just wanted to talk about it. So
- 0:22what I've done, I've invited Terry done him in. Hello Terry Kevin.
- 0:26Yeah, you're right, Yeah, good, thanks actually writing me back in.
- 0:28Yeah, thanks for coming in on a Saturday morning, dragging you out
- 0:31of bed. But now the whole nation was captured by darts and I mean
- 0:37you're our darts guru, our dance representative Academy FM. And did it go
- 0:44ballistic in your family when the darts was on? Oh? It always is.
- 0:48We always say Christmas Lever starts until the World Championship starts, so that's
- 0:52Christmas and been like that for many years. Yeah. Yeah. And because
- 0:57a lot of people paid a bit more attention to towards the end of the
- 1:00of the tournament because Luke Litler was coming through but not so much at the
- 1:06start. He's made a great impact when we talk about that later. But
- 1:11you have been you've been up to Ali Pally, haven't you. Yeah,
- 1:14been up a couple of times now, so tell us, tell us what
- 1:15it's like up there. That's hard to explain. It's just an unbelievable atmosphere.
- 1:21Everyone's in good spirits, you know. It's just it's just a fun
- 1:23place to be and lucky enough you get to watch a few people throw some
- 1:26decent darts as well. Yeah, yeah, it must be great. I
- 1:30mean it is now. It's almost Carnival, isn't it now? It is?
- 1:34Yeah. I mean people like fancy dress are like a sing song,
- 1:36and I think I think that adds to it, that, you know,
- 1:38get the crowd participating the players and now playing up to them. I think
- 1:42I just think it as the spectacle. I think it's a good thing,
- 1:45and I think because of the focus that he's got. I did have some
- 1:48figures here. I think it was over four million people tuned in towards the
- 1:51darts. I would say that it's getting a bit more respect from the public
- 1:56now, this game, isn't it. Yeah, most definitely. I mean
- 1:59you go back plenty years ago it was seen as you know, a man's
- 2:01game in a pub of Friday night, you know, fag's beer that's what
- 2:06it was. Now it's been taken seriously as a proper sport. Yeah,
- 2:09if you look at some of the players, they take their fitness quite seriously.
- 2:14I mean, I know it's hard to believe, but there is a
- 2:15few people that actually do that. Yeah. The chat I was reading about
- 2:20Luke Humphor is actually he lost a lot of weight and whilst he's got a
- 2:23bit of stick for it as well, but he said it helped him get
- 2:29through a game. He said on some of the high profile games when he
- 2:31was carrying too much weight towards the end, he was kind of mentally drained
- 2:35as well as physically, So it's done him a lot of good obviously.
- 2:38Yeah. I mean you think you're playing that Okay, it doesn't seem long
- 2:42watching it on Telly, but standing there throwing darts for that amount of time
- 2:45it is quite stamina sapping. So you do see the player now out and
- 2:50about concentrating on the fitness. Yeah yeah, right, Well let's just recap
- 2:53actually a bit terry, because let's talk about what you do with darts,
- 2:59because you've got two youngsters that play darts, haven't you, Yep, fifteen
- 3:01and fourteen and sixteen now see fourteen and sixteen, and this Luke Littler does
- 3:06look older. I know he's getting a lot of stick for it, but
- 3:08he's seventeen on the twenty first of January. So I mean, can you
- 3:14imagine Evan a Sun that's like sixteen as a world champion. I know I've
- 3:17already tried told one, So I out and Bucket's ideas up a bit.
- 3:21Yeah, Harry out and buy mere house. Yeah, And they pretty much
- 3:23were the words that I threw out him. Yeah, it's it's phenomenal.
- 3:27What's what he's done at that age and how far he's got it. I
- 3:31don't think you'll see that again for a very very long time, or at
- 3:35least in our lifetime. So let's get back to grassroots, to legs like
- 3:38your son that are good at darts. Where are they in the in their
- 3:44sort of darts ladder so to speak. So they obviously go to academies on
- 3:50a Saturday up in Canterbury. So they do that, which is every week,
- 3:55played local leagues with me and have done now for probably five years.
- 4:00Again, found out they were doing pretty well at that, So push them
- 4:02into county youth. I've got one that playing for Kent Youth, one playing
- 4:06for London Youth. And they now do what's called the JDC Foundation Tour.
- 4:14So that's where the so called better players or you know, you can get
- 4:18them from all around the country, Ireland where some things, people from Morta,
- 4:21Germany. They just have like a big knockout competition over a weekend and
- 4:27obviously you can win some you know for that age decent prize money. Right,
- 4:31And we spoke before, but you know, let's play for the county,
- 4:34don't they Yeah, one for Kent, one for London. Yet one
- 4:38for Kent and one for London. Had a bit of a transfer this this
- 4:41summer. Can you do that? You can? Indeed? Oh right,
- 4:43okay, we won't go into the politics of that. But will they be
- 4:46playing against each other? Then? That's so funny enough you should say that
- 4:49they did this year when they played each other, and funny enough to draw
- 4:53works out that they played each other. Oh really yeah, And as a
- 4:56parent it wasn't fun Be're totally honest. Yeah, yeah, you're we're like,
- 5:00oh what do I do now? Yeah, pretty much? And nerve
- 5:02wracking, yeah yeah. And do they practice together at home sort of thing
- 5:08they do? Yeah, I mean, one practice is more than the other.
- 5:11I won't I won't throw the other one under the buzz but yeah,
- 5:13one one you can't get off the board and the other one sometimes you struggle
- 5:15to get on it. But yeah, they both they both do practice well
- 5:17together. Okay, good, Well, we're gonna have a little break now
- 5:20and play a bit of music because we're going to come back and talk about
- 5:23World Championship darts. But it's nice to know that there are youngsters out there
- 5:28like your two boys. I mean they must I suppose they must think there
- 5:31are a million miles away from being like Luke Littler. But there's every opportunity
- 5:38there isn't there. Oh Now, nowadays there's plenty of opportunity to progress and
- 5:42grow and go further in the sport. So yeah, there's there's definitely opportunities
- 5:46for any youngster out there now. Excellent, Okay, So let's have a
- 5:49little listen to what we've got coming up. A bit of a rock the
- 5:54boat by the Huge Corporation, roped the boat there by Huge Corporation. Well,
- 6:06we're back in the studio and we are talking darts. It's the sport
- 6:09of the moment. If you was tuned in last week and you must have
- 6:13been really excited at this final and perhaps you learn a bit more about darts
- 6:16as well. So I'm joined back in the studio by Terry. You're right,
- 6:18Terry, You're good now. Terry. You say you've been up to
- 6:24Ali Palli a couple of times and it's a kind of an atmosphere. So
- 6:29what do you think. Do you think that helps the darts players or it
- 6:32puts them off? I think there's a combination of both, depending if the
- 6:38crowd's on your side. I mean we've we've seen it with a few people
- 6:41I know, go in Price, probably Darryl Gurney a few times the crowd,
- 6:44crowd get on top of you, it can play in your mind.
- 6:47But again, if you've got the crowd back in, like quite a few
- 6:50of them have, then I think it can spur you on, just you
- 6:53know that little bit more. Yeah, yeah, I mean Luke Littler,
- 6:55he did kind of rise to the crowd, didn't he. For a youngster
- 6:59I'll say, with little experiences, But that's not quite true because I was
- 7:02looking up his Wikipedia and he's been playing darts for a long time. In
- 7:08fact, I can tell you here was it here that he did he did
- 7:13a nine dart finish at the age of thirteen. I mean, have you
- 7:17ever done a night dark fish? I'd love to know coasters? I've ever
- 7:20gott coast. I've got six I think. But it's one of those things,
- 7:24you know, it's the holy grail for darts players in a nine dart
- 7:27finish, and to say you've done it at thirteen, it's yeah, I
- 7:30suppose it's like it's like a golf that does a hole in one or a
- 7:33snooker player against one four seven that is that it's one of those things that's
- 7:38harder to hit a nine darts or one four seven or a hole in one.
- 7:41Yeah, yeah, yeah, brilliant. So anyway, Luke Litlter is
- 7:45he's set the nation of light with his darts. And do you think it's
- 7:48now going to make an impact on youngsters who might want tom you know,
- 7:51think, oh, I just try to you know, go a little bit
- 7:55better than playing in the shed. I mean I think it will. I
- 7:57mean I hope it will. I mean you don't get anywhere without youth progressing
- 8:00and coming through no matter what sport you play, say with its football,
- 8:03cricket, darts rugby. You've got to have the youth to come through for
- 8:05that next generation. So I think it will spare a few people on.
- 8:09I mean, my eldest at schools telling me his old year was tuned in
- 8:13to watch the darts and they were constantly on about him. Oh do you
- 8:16know him? You know, how's he getting on and things like that.
- 8:18So just just by one sixteen year old doing that, you've got you know,
- 8:22a whole whole year at school now watching darts and that's on a minimal
- 8:26scale. Yeah, yeah, right. Then we were talking off before the
- 8:30start of the show that you went to Romania. Yeah, twenty two went
- 8:35out to Romainia Open just as a went with a friend, got dragged along
- 8:39and you know, have a go. I was like, okay, what's
- 8:41the worst that could happen? Well, you were playing, yeah, very
- 8:43badly, but it doesn't matter. You were there, so how did you
- 8:46get roped into that? Then old friend of mine was out there, he's
- 8:50done a couple before, the Lithuanian and something else, and he was like,
- 8:52oh, come along, what's the worst that can happen? I need
- 8:54I need a pairs partner. I see. Yeah, yeah, you know
- 8:58jawn off on a little holiday, never been to Romania before, and yeah,
- 9:01next next thing, I know, I've rocked up in this building and
- 9:03yeah there's former world champions you know, champions elect, World champions elect there.
- 9:07It was a bit like oh, a right, different league, very
- 9:11different. Yeah, yeah, for did you yet? Oh didn't even go
- 9:13past the first round, didn't even win a game? Really, But I
- 9:20saw Luke Litler's name against them of Romania. Was that the same year?
- 9:22It was the same year. Yeah, come across him, watched a few
- 9:26of his games, even watched him in the final and he I think he
- 9:28beat a former world world champion in yellow classen in the final. Work he
- 9:33was only what fifteen then as well? Wow? Yeah, so that that
- 9:35never came to anybody's attention, did it? Well, we might have done
- 9:37in the darts community, but I certainly keep an eye on what's going on
- 9:41in sport. And I must admit I'd never heard of the name Luke Littler
- 9:46until this competition. But you knew, you knew he was in the circles,
- 9:48didn't you. Yeah, I've had loaded name for what sort of three
- 9:52four years now? I mean obviously with my boys playing you for you obviously
- 9:54here who are the good young players around? And then you know, you'
- 10:00sort of keep tabs. You just keep an eye out every time you see
- 10:01and hear the name. And yeah, he's just grown and grown in this
- 10:05year on the youth circuit. He's pretty much won everything there is to win.
- 10:09Yeah, yeah, yeah, excuse me. So it's going to change
- 10:13his life, isn't it. I mean he's now going to be asked to
- 10:16advertise darts flights and you know, dart boards and things like that. Do
- 10:22you think you can't stop anyone progressing? But do you think it's come too
- 10:26soon for him? It depends how you want to look at it depends how
- 10:31he handles it, I think. Yeah. I mean there was the old
- 10:33sayings that if you're good enough, you're old enough, right, Yeah,
- 10:35and he's certainly proved he's good enough. I think you know, his family
- 10:39and his management they're probably keeping grounded. Yeah, I mean I think they've
- 10:41dealt with him quite well. I mean, British media doesn't help. It
- 10:45doesn't help anyone who's successful. So you're right they like to jump on him
- 10:48straight away, didn't they exactly? And a few people have you know,
- 10:50a few of the experienced processa just leave them alone. Let him play darts.
- 10:54So I think as long as he's looked after, I don't think it'll
- 10:56phase him. And he's respected, isn't he by by the other dance players.
- 11:01He's not just like, I've got to beat this kid. You know,
- 11:03it's I'm really I'm really up against it today. And what did I
- 11:07hear? I remember it. I was reading about Luke Humphreys. During the
- 11:11game, he said to himself, I've really got to up my game.
- 11:16I've got to beat this this opponent. He didn't call him a child or
- 11:20a boy or anything. He said because he's going to be around for a
- 11:22long time. And that's what spurred him on, because he knew that this
- 11:26Luke Littler was going to be knocking on the door for you know, in
- 11:30the next few years. So he hasn't a respect of others. Do you
- 11:35think you might encourage more dance players to play locally as well in your league?
- 11:39Yeah, I mean it can do it. I mean this time of
- 11:41year, you know, everyone gets the buzz of darts. It's that time
- 11:43of year. So I mean there's I know there's a few local leagues finishing
- 11:46up at the end of the season. You know, they're always looking out
- 11:48for more players, more teams, so opportunities there for more people to join.
- 11:52Yeah yeah, okay, and before we go, I mean, is
- 11:56there anything that's really kind of struck a nerve with you, really really brought
- 12:03home the game what he's done to the game. I think he's taken it
- 12:07to another level without shadow of a doubt. I mean, you know,
- 12:11back in the day, you had Eric Bristow who was the flamboyant one,
- 12:13you had that Phil Taylor who dominated for years. I mean Michael Van Gerwin
- 12:18then come through and sort of took it. I think I think Luke will
- 12:20take it to another level again. I think, but for the slightly younger
- 12:24generation and give them an idol to follow. Yeah yeah, that's great.
- 12:28As we said, he doesn't look sixteen, but he's going to get that
- 12:31stick all the time, isn't he? And he certainly needs to shave.
- 12:37But I mean, we know he's sixteen because it says that last last last
- 12:43year he was studying for his GCSS and he said he'd be glad when he
- 12:46passes his driving says, so dead don't have to drive a bit like you,
- 12:48so they don't have to drive him around everywhere. Yeah, save a
- 12:52bit on Petro wuldn't it. Yeah, I mean at that level they probably
- 12:54get all that paid for him. Yeah, yeah, I'm sure. Yeah,
- 12:56well I'll tell you I'm so glad you come in to Terry because it's
- 13:01nice to know that, even like grassroots level like you play Roundy Folkston and
- 13:05yourself, that you've been in, if you like in the same competition as
- 13:09a current world champion, it's you didn't know that at the time, of
- 13:13course, But no, I didn't he you know, you knew he was
- 13:16going to go and do great things, but at the time, you know,
- 13:20he was just you've champion. You probably thought, oh, he's going
- 13:22to be a good plot dance player one day, but you probably never thought
- 13:24he'd make world champion at the age of sixteen. No. I mean,
- 13:26like I said, out there as well was Bo Greaves and she's a two
- 13:30time Ladies champion at the age of nineteen. Yeah, she was out there
- 13:33at the time. So yeah, I mean you had former world champions,
- 13:37so it's yeah, you can go and mix it with these people. Yeah,
- 13:39that's great. So what advice would you give to people that they like,
- 13:45they like to play a little bit dancing in the shed, but they've
- 13:46seen they've seen Luke Litler and what can do and it wants to entire them
- 13:50to, you know, get a bit more involved. What can what advice
- 13:52can you give to people that want to get involved in dance? How would
- 13:56they go about it? Be confident, believing yourself and re out. Like
- 14:00I said, there's there's you've got team leagues locally, you've got singles leagues,
- 14:03and there's always next steps if you know, if you find that you
- 14:05want to go and push yourself, there are there are other levels to go
- 14:09a lot, super league. So you know that there's plenty out there for
- 14:13people that even want to play on their own or they want to be part
- 14:16of a team. It's there's definitely plenty out there. I mean we can
- 14:18always point them in directions needed for whatever they want. So people can drop
- 14:22you a little message. Yeah, always happy to help. Terry. Thank
- 14:26you so much for coming in. It really has opened my eyes to do
- 14:30we we've we've highlighted dance before before all this has happened, but I never
- 14:35thought we'd be sitting here talking about you playing in the same tournament as a
- 14:39world champion me neither. Thanks Terry, thank you. In the meantime,
- 14:50I'm joined by two lovely ladies now and I want to just say hello to
- 14:54Meil. Good morning, Mail, Morning keV. How are you doing?
- 14:56Yeah, I'm good, thank you good. Okay, So we're going to
- 14:58talk about London Marathon, but I want to say good morning Chloe. Morning,
- 15:01Chloe, morning, cav. How are you doing? IM good?
- 15:03Thank you? Right, we start with you first, Chloe, because now
- 15:07let's you've you've put in for the London Marathon, is that right? Yeah?
- 15:11And have you ever done a marathon before? Nope? And you're running
- 15:16for charity yep. No, there you go. You ticked all the boxes.
- 15:18It's been great, Evan, you're on the show. Thank you very
- 15:20much. Joking Okay, Chloe, So let's go back. How did you
- 15:28start getting into running? So last April i'd come back and one of my
- 15:33local work friends had said that she joined a club called Beginners to Runners.
- 15:39Okay, yeah, so I thought why not sign up to it. During
- 15:41the beginner's course was a hit or miss, like everyone said, oh,
- 15:46you're not going to stick to it. I've stuck to it. Ever,
- 15:50since, just because the pure fact everyone was like, you're not going to
- 15:52stick to it. Mel was like, oh, we're doing the London marathons.
- 15:56You want to join. I was like, yeah, why not?
- 15:58I can't run five k yet? But right, well, but that's the
- 16:00sort of determination you need. And sometimes it's best if you don't know,
- 16:03for hep rounding, because you don't know what's ahead. Miler and I have
- 16:07been down there, we've run marathons, and but you've got this this young,
- 16:10enthusiastic approach to the whole thing. And so at what level are you?
- 16:15Now? How far are you been running? The furthest I've ran is
- 16:18ten k, but that was back in August last year, and then I
- 16:22had a knee injury. Right recently, I've just got to eight k again.
- 16:26Yeah. Yeah, and that's with a push with my club manager.
- 16:30He really pushes me, Like I'll go to club and say I'm running five
- 16:34k and he's like no, not and I'm like, oh, okay,
- 16:38you're running more than that. Yeah. And so having this club is that
- 16:42that's helped you sort of motivate you to yeah massively. Yeah. I wouldn't
- 16:48have signed up to most my bases if it wasn't for my club. They
- 16:52do really push everyone to succeed and there's a lot of people in the club
- 16:56that have like gone from not running at all to like doing ultras this year.
- 17:00Oh well yeah, okay, So that having that environment around you inspires
- 17:04you to keep going, doesn't it. Yeah? Okay, great, we're
- 17:07gonna switch to you. No mel now, Meil, you're unexperienced runner.
- 17:11You've been around the block a few times, as they say, but you've
- 17:17got tell us about your family. Your family are getting together on this occasion,
- 17:22aren't they to run the London So tell us about that. Yeah.
- 17:26Well, I've been trying for several years through my own running club, South
- 17:30Kent Harriers here locally and folks done. I've been trying to get a place
- 17:36into London for several years and not being able to. So I thought this
- 17:41year, okay, I would like to do it for charity. So my
- 17:45husband, as you know, Royd, I knew he would come along with
- 17:48me because he always does. So we've Yeah, we've signed up to Children's
- 17:55Cancer, which is an amazing cancer sorry excuse me, an amazing charity.
- 18:02And I've just managed to rope all the family in so I've got Chloe,
- 18:07her boyfriend Stephen, who is my nephew. I've got my daughter Neelie she's
- 18:11doing it, and my son Liam, he's also doing it. He's an
- 18:15experienced runner, he's done a marathon before. And then I've got my sister
- 18:21in lawd Dawn. She again, she hasn't done a marathon at all,
- 18:23she's just starting out like Chloe. Unfortunately, she's also had a knee injury,
- 18:29but she's very determined, so she'll get around. My nephew Oscar.
- 18:33And so there's eight of us altogether, and you all live close by.
- 18:40I mean, can you sort of I know it's difficult, but can you
- 18:42train me one or two of these or are they all doing their own thing.
- 18:47We're in two parts of the country, so there is myself, Royd,
- 18:51Chloe and my daughter here in Folkstone and then the rest of my family
- 18:56live in North Devon, so they are all down in Devon training my nephew
- 19:02Stephen, he's joined a local running club, as well as my sister in
- 19:06lord Dawn. My son he runs a lot anyway. But yeah, so
- 19:10there's four of them down here and four of us are okay, So the
- 19:12next time you see each other, will be on the start line. Yeah,
- 19:15and actually that that might be tough because I don't know have you been
- 19:19told what start color you're in. I think we're I think we're red.
- 19:25Yeah, you're all red. Yeah, I think we're great. Yeah.
- 19:29Well that makes a great difference because I've known runners that are trained together and
- 19:33they've got different start zones. And quite frankly, if you bunk in,
- 19:37you're all right. I don't don't mind too much. So that's a great
- 19:41story. So how many of you in total? Eight? Did you say?
- 19:44Yeah? There's yeah, eight of us, eight of us, And
- 19:48so you're all running, all running for this charity. We're all running for
- 19:52the same charity. We're all running, we're all fundraising, and we've all
- 19:56got our Facebook pages. So please do have a look on Facebook pages all
- 20:02of our friends. Well before before the show's out. You can remind me
- 20:06of any connections that you've got and how we can crack on. So Chloe
- 20:12and beginners to run us. Whereabouts are they? So they are all over
- 20:18the country, but I'm based in Hive at the Cricket Club. You can
- 20:22find them on Facebook as a club and then you can find your local one,
- 20:27okay, Yeah, No, I've compared a lot of races over the
- 20:32years in Kent and I've often seen a big gaggle of green fluorescent shirts there
- 20:37and I thought, all that must be beginners to run us. But I
- 20:40never know until I go and speak to them where they come from. And
- 20:44I understand that you were at a race or at one time when I think
- 20:48it was up a port Limb, there was a huge amount of them uppert
- 20:51Port Limb and I thought I must go and find out where they come from.
- 20:53Was you one of those? Yeah, I was one of them.
- 20:55And then there was a big green parade of us at the Portland Run.
- 20:59Yeah, very vocal and noisy, and I do remember yeah giving me a
- 21:03giving me a hard time. But now it's great. I see him all
- 21:07over the place and say, if I do see them, I want to
- 21:10go over and find out where they come from. So have you got any
- 21:14other races lined up? Chloe? So I've signed up to the Canterbury ten
- 21:18miler. Oh yeah. Then I've got the half marathon in Headcorn in February
- 21:25and the dim Church ten k in February, and then I've also got a
- 21:30ten miler in march called the Drop, which is a new race. Signed
- 21:36up to it last year. All Right noted that one quite a lot of
- 21:38us from club are doing it. And you basically you get blindfolded and put
- 21:42on a bus and they take you out into a ten mile radius of the
- 21:47Hate center and you have to find your way back. It's a bit different,
- 21:51so it could be longer than ten hours get the bus back. It
- 21:55could be five. Yeah, oh no, that sounds interesting because it does
- 21:57mix it up and it makes it rather than just pounding the streets. And
- 22:02you know, when I was doing might I've done three marathons and my time
- 22:07was such that I didn't have much time, so I was pounding the streets
- 22:11on my own. And my very very very first marathon was up in Yorkshire
- 22:15and I remember looking in front of me, absolutely no one in front of
- 22:18me, looking behind me, no one behind me. I thought, am
- 22:22I lost of augh? And then I saw somebody. So it is important
- 22:25to have company. Okay, we're going to take a little bit little break
- 22:26now, have a little bit of music, but we will be back to
- 22:30talk marathons, Temptations and my Girl. That song is kind of a bit
- 22:42of a wedding song. Now at it when Dad wants to get up,
- 22:45thinks he can sing sings to his daughter. Everyone falls about laughing, but
- 22:51they all have a great time. So we're back in the studio now talking
- 22:53the London marathons and we're back with Chloe and Meil. So let's turn to
- 22:59you Mail. How many marathons have you done in the past. I think
- 23:03I've done about seven or eight. Now, have you ever done in London?
- 23:07No, you've never done in London, so that'll be a first for
- 23:10you. Although you don't tick all my boxes. You're very welcome to coming
- 23:14on the show today. But it's nice to have someone with a bit of
- 23:18experience as well, because I really am eager to get to the runners who
- 23:22are running London for the first time raising money for a charity. But under
- 23:26your guidance, meal you can do. You find that you can help your
- 23:32little group or they kind of just doing their own thing. They don't know,
- 23:36they just want to be left alone to do it. No, they've
- 23:38obviously because they know that I've been running for a while and I'm part of
- 23:42South Kent Area as a running club. They know they've been asking me questions.
- 23:47You know, with regards to what kind of shoes do we need?
- 23:51What about our socks? You know, do we need to buy new ones?
- 23:55Do we need to you know, wear the men. So it's been
- 23:57nice to be able to give them a couple of tear it. I must
- 24:00say your experience, because it does make a difference because you can make mistakes.
- 24:06I mean, people think, oh, yeah, I'm running a London
- 24:07marathon. I'll buy a new pair of trainers and wear them on the day.
- 24:11Big mistake, isn't it. Yeah? So and what else do they
- 24:15ask you? Do they ask about hitting the wall or the pain barriers or
- 24:19yeah? Definitely myself personally, I've been lucky because I've never hit that barrier.
- 24:26But yeah, we have been talking about that because one thing that I've
- 24:30learnt myself is it's very easily to get carried away with the atmosphere of everything
- 24:36going on around you, you know, to kind of lose concentration with regards
- 24:40to your pace. So I have been saying to them, don't go out
- 24:45there, don't push it to begin with. You really do need to stick
- 24:48to your plans, stick to your time and your pace because it's important.
- 24:53It's a long way, yeah, exactly. And I mean I can remember
- 25:00in the day I did. I did a twenty miler. I think on
- 25:03my own and thought twenty miles great, you know, then it hit me
- 25:07I've got six six more miles to go. Yeah. But I think that
- 25:14that enthusiasm on the day as well, when you've got people around you cheering
- 25:18you on. And Chloe, whatever you do, get your name on your
- 25:22T shirt. Right when I run the London Marathon, I had Ferret written
- 25:26on the T shirt, right, yeah, sports Ferry. I had Ferret
- 25:29on the T shirt. And the amount of stick I got, Well,
- 25:33come on, where's your Fareite down your traisers and one blow said to me,
- 25:36I've got a ferry home. We can run faster than you. Yeah.
- 25:40But it made me chuckle, It made me lifted me, you know.
- 25:42And when I was coming down the final straight at horse Guards there there
- 25:47was a big commentator doing the sort of thing that I do most Sundays,
- 25:49and she went very posh she was. She went, oh, welcome home,
- 25:53We want to welcome home. Mister Farray must have thought I was friends
- 25:57or something. I said, it's not fire, it's far It. But
- 26:02yeah, so Chloe, you need to get your name back to you,
- 26:07Chloe, and to you both mail. Actually will you be running in sort
- 26:11of cancer T shirts or you? Yeah, so we have to run in
- 26:17them, don't we? Mouth oh for the charity? Cool? Yeah yeah,
- 26:19yeah yeah. I've just placed my order for my T shirt and I
- 26:22do actually get iron on letters sent with it because I've raised over one hundred
- 26:27pounds already. Okay, yeah, yeah, I've just put my name.
- 26:32Yeah yeah, make sure you get your name and I'll tell you what if
- 26:33you need somewhere to put your name, go down down Tonton Street and see
- 26:37Sarah Harvey because she put the names on my own there. So a little
- 26:41little bit of good morning Sarah, a little bit of a free advertising for
- 26:44you. So getting down to the nitty gritty, Chloe, you know you
- 26:49go to sleep at night you think, oh my word, I've got the
- 26:52London Marathon coming up. Is it really a challenge or you relishing it,
- 26:56you're really looking forward to it, or you're dreading it. When I think
- 27:00about it and I'm not running, I'm really excited to just see how far
- 27:03I can mentally push myself. Yeah, but when I'm running my five k
- 27:07and eight k, I'm thinking Oh my god, I've got so many more
- 27:11to run. Yeah, I was speaking to Oh no, it was no.
- 27:15We played an interview back from Gary and Marie Brazier over the last few
- 27:18days, and I said to Marie, I said, can you really enjoy
- 27:22a marathon? She said, well, you can't really because you're focusing on
- 27:26what you want to do. And if you start, as Meal says,
- 27:29you get carried away and you know you're running too fast, you can you
- 27:36can have a bad experience. So I'm hoping that all these runners that I'm
- 27:38going to speak to, we'll have a brilliant experience. Listen to people like
- 27:42a male who've been there and done it and learn from it. So so
- 27:49the charity is it? What's the charity again? Children's cancer? Children's cancer?
- 27:55I mean, how fantastic is that if you raise a few grand for
- 27:57them? And that's the other thing. If you've got people giving you money,
- 28:03you think, oh you mustn't let them down. Yeah, that's what's
- 28:06that's what's helped pushing as well. Yeah, it's really important. Have you
- 28:11got are you working to a program at the moment or are you just kind
- 28:14of hoping to build up the knowledge as you go. So the London Marathon
- 28:18actually sent us all one, so you picked one out of the three.
- 28:23And I'm kind of incorporating it with my friends one as well because she's running
- 28:26it as well for a different charity. Yeah, so I'm kind of mixing
- 28:30the two together because mine's more time on your feet and hers is distance.
- 28:36So HER's this more like five k than five k and then an eight k
- 28:40at the weekend. So I'm trying to incorporate the two just because. And
- 28:44will your if you like your lifestyle, will that get in the way in
- 28:48as much that are you free at weekends because a lot of people do their
- 28:51long run at weekends, or are you tied up at the moment. I'm
- 28:56I'm okay for time, yeah, but when I start like working and it's
- 29:00four days on, four days off, that might get a bit tricky,
- 29:03all right, Yes, yes, I've got to work out how I can
- 29:07fit in there. Yeah. Sometimes it does work to your advantage because I
- 29:11was a shift worker on Eurotunnel for a number of years and whilst it can
- 29:15be a pain, you might get like a four day window during the week
- 29:18where there's no one about and you can just go out and do your own
- 29:22thing without any pressure. So mail you've been there before, but have you
- 29:27got a training program or you're just going to go out and do a lot
- 29:30of local races and build a mileage up on your own from your own experience.
- 29:33Yeah, I will still do those local races because you try and incorporate
- 29:38the distances of any races going between now and then. I'll be doing the
- 29:44counter Prey ten mile Royd and I will definitely put in to do the LID
- 29:48twenty when that comes around. So yeah, I'll still do those, but
- 29:52I'll do a plan. I've got to trying to do a plan for myself
- 29:56actually because I've just qualified with the England Athletics as a qualified coach. Yeah,
- 30:03so I'm putting together my own plan which we will follow. But work
- 30:08does impact. It is very difficult and especially with the darker evenings as well
- 30:12and dark mornings. Yeah yeah, it gets in the way a bit,
- 30:15isn't it. Yeah, Well, before we go, I mean, any
- 30:19thank you there, any mentions you want to make me, Yeah, I
- 30:22mean I would like to personally thank my because with regards to my fundraising where
- 30:27I'm currently working, I work for our HK groups and I'm the registered manager
- 30:33at Parkview Care Center in Ashford, so we are going to be doing a
- 30:38lot of fundraising. We'd like to be able to bring the community in too,
- 30:42joining with us and family and friends where we're planning some events with our
- 30:48residents. We're going to do a couple of little running events outside in our
- 30:52car parks and the gardens. We're going to do a little wheelchair race and
- 30:55get the staff to do a little three legged race and do some training.
- 30:59So it's going to be exciting. But I think for thank you, I
- 31:03mean we'd like a big thank you for the charity itself, you know,
- 31:07Children's Cancer, because we are quite a big group and they've been so helpful
- 31:14and supported because we have got so many of us that are first time marathon
- 31:18runners. We've met them. Actually we've met Emma, the lady that's running
- 31:22it, in a couple of running events, and she's been lovely and supportive.
- 31:26We've had a lot of merchandise given us for the fundraising aspect of it,
- 31:32which is really good, really helpful. Thanks just thanks to anybody really,
- 31:37friends and family that you know are going to help us fundraise. It
- 31:41is a great charity. We do welcome any kind of help and support from
- 31:45anybody, so please do get on our Facebook pages. I'd like to personally
- 31:52give a big thank you to all the marshals that we meet. You know,
- 31:56all those races that we go to, we really do build nice relationships.
- 32:00I mean you and Ike have I seen you a most all of my
- 32:02races, and you're very aware that me and Royd come across the line on
- 32:06ro But the marshals they do a great job. You know, they're out
- 32:10in all weathers as well. So that's my big thank you to all the
- 32:14marshals and all the races I just mentioned on that point, and to our
- 32:16listeners there that I've talked about my time in Cyprus on the show before now
- 32:23and I've also mentioned that Melanroyd were out in Cyprus, and it's funny how
- 32:27the tables were turned because I was a marshal four different races and all of
- 32:32a sudden the ball was on the other foot. I did feel a little
- 32:37bit strange. I feel a bit isolated one particular point out there in that
- 32:39forest. But there was one point where I shared the pain of a marshal
- 32:45because on the last day on the ten K I was marshaling at a point
- 32:49right on the corner and it was a really really windy, choppy day and
- 32:54I was right on the seafront and I got absolutely soaked and it wasn't even
- 33:00raining people. I went back to the finish and people said, oh,
- 33:04we missed the rain and I'll come back. I was absolutely dropping, but
- 33:07it was such good fun. So yeah, I agree, marshalling on a
- 33:12cold, windy day, especially if it's a long race, can be really
- 33:15tough. And the marshals do think they're do need those thanks? Anything else
- 33:21than me before we go? No, I think that's all just We're going
- 33:25to be doing a lot of advertising from part viewcres Cent. We really would
- 33:30like to bring the community into come and support ONET, to support ourselves and
- 33:35our lovely residents and stuff, but also support the charity. So we will
- 33:38be doing some advertising with our events. So hopefully you will get in touch
- 33:44and pop along and join us. Thank you. Okay, now, Chloe,
- 33:47last word with you. You're new to running, but has anybody helped
- 33:53you in particular or as a group so far? And you can see them
- 33:58kind of latching onto them for support. I must say my club manager,
- 34:02he's done a fantastic job. The Portland Run was my first race, and
- 34:08the last bit as you got to the top of the hill. I mean
- 34:12I worked there for quite a while, so I knew the route already.
- 34:17But the last hill I said to him, I was like, I can't.
- 34:21He ran with me the whole way. I said, you don't need
- 34:22to run with me, you're a lot faster. If you want to go
- 34:25ahead, that's fine. But he stayed with me the whole time, and
- 34:30the last bit I said to him, I was like, I can't run
- 34:31anymore. I was like, I'm going to be sick. I can't do
- 34:34it. And he was like, no, just keep going. When you
- 34:36get to the top, we'll walk for ten seconds and then we're running all
- 34:38the way to the finish line. And I did. I stopped, and
- 34:42he came behind me and pushed me. And since then, like he's pushed
- 34:46me in every single club run. He's really there to like support me.
- 34:51Oh great, okay, I'll tell you a little story about the Portland Run.
- 34:54I was there, as you know, playing the music and and as
- 35:00the runners come in, I turned it up and got it going and one
- 35:02of the I think it was the head keeper came over and he said,
- 35:06excuse me, mister DJ, do you think you could turn the music down?
- 35:08The lions are getting a bit agitated, pacing up and down in there
- 35:14cases. Okay, last word from you, Chloe, anything else you want
- 35:16to say, because what we will be doing is we will be Chloe and
- 35:22Mail will be sending me their Facebook links. They're just giving links and we
- 35:27can share them, so we won't it's always difficult to try and remember just
- 35:30giving links, so please look out. I'll be posting them both on my
- 35:35Facebook page. So, Chloe, any lost words from you? No,
- 35:39I think there's everything. I think Male's covered all the thank yous. I
- 35:43would like to say big thank you to Mail for actually getting me involved and
- 35:46pushing me to sign up. I want to My final word is I want
- 35:54to thank both of you for coming in at such short notice, and I
- 35:58will be following your progress Chloe, so I'll be breathing Daniel neck and find
- 36:01out what's going on every week. I want a race report from Mew.
- 36:05So it's time with a bit of music. Now, thank you once again,
- 36:07and good luck on your London marathons. Time for a bit of proud
- 36:13Mary and credence, clear, war
