- 0:07The Montreal Expos faced the Pittsburgh Pirates at Three Rivers Stadium for opening day on Friday, April 6, 1979.
- 0:15Montreal was managed by Dick Williams in his third season with the club.
- 0:20The Expos had been a below average team for years, never finishing higher than fourth place in the NL East
- 0:26every year since their expansion season in 1969.
- 0:30The team had some hope, however, as they watched the rise of their three young homegrown sluggers,
- 0:35Gary Carter, Andre Dawson, and Larry Parrish.
- 0:39Pittsburgh entered 1979 under third year manager Chuck Tanner.
- 0:43The Pirates were a powerhouse in the 1970s but had trouble finishing it off.
- 0:48They won the World Series in 1971 but had four NLCS exits in the early 1970s,
- 0:54along with three consecutive second place finishes in the years leading up to 1979.
- 0:59This audio recording is from the Pittsburgh Radio broadcast featuring announcers Milo Hamilton and Lanny Frateri.
- 1:06This is Milo Hamilton with Pirate Warm Up. Just minutes away now from the opening pitch.
- 1:15Pirate Warm Up is brought to you in part by Joe Ziskin, the Tri-State's quality home improvement expert
- 1:21who reminds you before you do anything in home improvement, do nothing until you talk to Joe.
- 1:28Pirate Warm Up time on opening day. Hello again everybody.
- 1:41This is Milo Hamilton greeting you from beautiful Three Rivers.
- 1:44The sun is out bright and that means it's baseball time.
- 1:47Weather might not feel like it all together but you get here the players are ready to go
- 1:51and after this great spring training this ball club has had and thanking all winter over how close it was
- 1:56last September and October they are ready to put it in here for a year and give you fans a real treat for a full season.
- 2:02Bert Blylevin celebrates a birthday today. Makes me feel a little older. Chuck will probably kid me about it.
- 2:07I was married 27 years ago today and he was born 27 years ago today. How about that?
- 2:13So we're celebrating and hoping in about three hours that we're that much happier 1-0 against these Expos.
- 2:19It'll be Bert Blylevin hoping to celebrate that birthday in a big way and Steve Rogers,
- 2:24a very fine right-hander, will be going for the Montreal Expos.
- 2:27As always on opening day the skipper of the Bucks Chuck Tanner will be our guest.
- 2:30We'll be talking with the Newcastle Flash right after this message.
- 2:34Calling Dr. Ziskin. When you need a doctor at your house you know who to call.
- 2:41When you need a doctor for your house then call Dr. Ziskin, the tri-state's leading house doctor at 421-7866.
- 2:49Joe Ziskin is the man who can doctor an ailing house, cure it for a leaking roof or mend that dull drab look on the outside.
- 2:57Dr. Ziskin specializes in and will prescribe Ambassador Solid Vinyl Siding, the designer's choice for distinctive homes.
- 3:04Ambassador siding is thick and flexible plus dense, stain and scratch resistant.
- 3:09As Dr. Ziskin can cure drabitis.
- 3:12So let Joe Ziskin, home improvement specialist, diagnose your house troubles by making a house call and giving you a free estimate.
- 3:19Every job is guaranteed in writing. That's why no money you'll be risking when you call Joe Ziskin.
- 3:25So do nothing until you call Joe Ziskin at 421-7866. Out of town call collect.
- 3:31Chuck Tanner the last time I talked to you was right in your office as we're doing it here today.
- 3:36It was the day after we didn't do it against the Phillies.
- 3:40It kind of got to you that day because it kind of hit you that day when you were doing the show.
- 3:45It was so close and you've been preaching that all winter.
- 3:48Yeah, you're right. It just knocked the stuff out of you.
- 3:51But you know what? We're starting again today, Milo.
- 3:53And the butterflies are back in the stomach again getting ready for another exciting season.
- 3:58And I'm looking forward to it with great anticipation and great expectations from the Pirates of 79.
- 4:05You know I had Dale Barrow on the other day from Florida and he said,
- 4:07I am so happy to be with the club opening day. It's different to be called up.
- 4:12You can imagine how he feels today, don't you?
- 4:14I sure can. And any rookie whose first year opening day it has to be a thrill that they'll never forget.
- 4:20And we have a few of them with us that are going to go through that this afternoon.
- 4:25That's Ed Woodson, Steve Nicosia and Dale Barrow.
- 4:29You remember your opening day. You set a record.
- 4:31Yeah, I really did. Never forget it. Things happened and I was able to hit a home run the first time up in the Major League.
- 4:39So it's something I'll never forget. And it was a thrill that nobody can ever take away from you.
- 4:45Chuck, you heard me in the opening remarks say we've had a great spring. We have.
- 4:48This club is really ready. They're kind of busting at the seams to go here today, aren't they?
- 4:53Well, we're ready for the season, Milo.
- 4:55I believe that what we did in spring training to get them ready physically, to get them ready mentally, we've covered every phase of the game.
- 5:05We have a good ball club, the best 25-man unit I ever managed.
- 5:09We're in a great division, a tough division, competitive division. No easy games in our division.
- 5:15I don't think there's any easy games in the other division. I feel that the National League is really tough.
- 5:21And the thing we have to do is everybody in our ball club play up to their capabilities, not play beyond it.
- 5:28Just do what your abilities tell you you can do and contribute in your area, whatever your area is, to make our team good.
- 5:35And then we'll have a good year.
- 5:37Chuck, everybody knows that you're a manager who likes speed. Every club you've had has had it.
- 5:41You set a record, I think, in Oakland the year before you came here. The two years here, your clubs have stolen almost 500 bases.
- 5:47But another ingredient you like is a versatile bench. You might have the best bench you've ever had managing in the big league.
- 5:53No question about it. We do have that versatility, and we have power to come off the bench.
- 5:57And we have ball players that have speed on the bench. So we have all areas covered.
- 6:03And this is no question about it. This is the best bench with the balance and versatility that the Pirates have had in a long, long time, I believe.
- 6:12Really give you some maneuverability room in tough ball games and late innings.
- 6:15Exactly right. Plus the fact that the players that are on the bench, see, I know that if a situation comes up where a player isn't able to play for a few days,
- 6:25I feel we won't lose a beat because of the talent we have on the bench.
- 6:28Don't you think, too, that after Labor Day, when you see some clubs whilled a little bit, that this will help you, too,
- 6:33these guys that you consider maybe your regular eight won't be going downhill, as you see sometimes.
- 6:39They will have been spelled by a Lacey or a Milner or whatever.
- 6:43Well, we don't plan on playing everybody 162 games. You know, the way the season and the travels and different times the games are scheduled throughout the country,
- 6:54everybody has to have a break here and there. A ball player gets hurt when he gets tired.
- 6:59When the fatigue sets in, well, hopefully we have the players that can give all our ball players a day off that's needed here and there.
- 7:06And if we can do this, and I'm sure that we can, it's going to make us a better ball club throughout the long, hard season.
- 7:14This ball club has the depth, it has the speed, it has the defense that you worked on so much in the spring.
- 7:21That was one of your goals. And to work on those cutoffs and the base running, you lectured day after day on that and really got in the time,
- 7:28and you saw it pay off in a couple of spring games that helped you win.
- 7:31Yeah, we really did, Milo. And you saw it yourself every day the way we did go at it.
- 7:36And you have to give the ball players a lot of credit the way they worked. They have a purpose in mind.
- 7:41And I think that they don't want to be disappointed like they were last year.
- 7:45Everybody was heartbroken around here at the end of last season knowing how close we came.
- 7:49And I believe that they have a purpose that they don't want to be second anymore. We've been second two years here.
- 7:56And the last year Danny Murtaugh was here, and a lot of players were here when Danny was here.
- 8:00The purpose is let's not watch the World Series on television. Let's get there ourselves.
- 8:05Well, the enthusiasm is there, and it rubs right off from the gentleman who's been our guest.
- 8:10Chuck, looking forward to spending another year with you, and I know it's going to be an exciting, interesting one.
- 8:14And when we all get together in October, we're going to have a lot of laughs.
- 8:18Well, that's the purpose, Milo. And I know the fans, you come out and see your pirates, and they are your pirates.
- 8:24You'll see the best player in the game. You'll see great pitching, and you'll see great speed,
- 8:28and you'll enjoy yourselves because not only have they turned things around at the stadium here,
- 8:34beside having a good ball club, they're going to create a lot of interest for the fans,
- 8:38so the fans can really enjoy a day at the ballpark.
- 8:41And so that their children, no cheaper place that you can go for entertaining your family and your friends
- 8:47or your guests or whoever is around this area.
- 8:50And you're going to have a lot of fun in the stands, and we're going to give you a lot of fun on the field.
- 8:55So come on out here and see this ball club today and every time you can. Skip, good luck to you.
- 8:59Thanks, Milo.
- 9:00Chuck Tanner, skipper of the Bucks, the Bandolin Bucks, and they will be doing that all year long.
- 9:05We'll be back with a closing note right after this message.
- 9:08It's your way, it's my way, it's our way, the United Way, the United Way.
- 9:1783 agencies, 170 services at 201 locations serving almost a half million people, that's the United Way.
- 9:25And contributions are our way of supporting the agencies and services of the United Way,
- 9:30of giving aid to the handicapped, the aged, troubled youth, all those less fortunate than most of us.
- 9:35It's the United Way's responsibility to meet the human service needs of the community today as well as tomorrow.
- 9:41And it's our responsibility to help them meet those needs.
- 9:44This is Roy Fox. We at KDK Radio urge you to support your United Way.
- 9:49And remember, 92 cents of every dollar you contribute goes directly into United Way services.
- 9:54And that's a fact.
- 9:56It's your way, it's my way, it's our way, the United Way, the United Way.
- 10:10Chuck Tanner, for being our guest, will be going with Babs sometime during the season.
- 10:14Over to see Bernie Lister, the genial host of the Corkin Bottle.
- 10:16That's in the Oliver Building, Smithfield Street downtown.
- 10:19Now here today, the Dutchman Bert Wylowen trots out the new foliage, the beautiful new red beard.
- 10:24He'll be the bearded man from the north here today and take on Steve Rogers and the Expos.
- 10:29Hope you're on your way here. We're ready for the opener.
- 10:31Milo Hamilton thanking you for being with us.
- 10:33Hoping you'll stay tuned now for the ballgame between the Bucks and the Pirates right here on the Pirate Baseball Network.
- 10:40Pirate!

- 11:15Even though it's early in the season, barrel Chevrolet is already batting a thousand during their Hello Spring sale now going on.

- 13:35And first of all, in honor of the expo's who are here today on opening day, Au Canada.
- 14:05And now as we get set for opening day 79.
- 14:29I can remember since I was about six years old, you'd always take the day off from school.
- 14:34Mom would write that special excuse. You'd find your way at a ballpark around the country.
- 14:39For me it was Rochester, New York, and sure was the same for Milo in his days in Iowa.
- 14:43Well, here we are at Pittsburgh Three Rivers Stadium, the opener of the 1979 baseball season for the Bucks.
- 14:50And the action news brought to you by Budweiser, the king of beers.

- 15:21Any publication, rebroadcast, or other use of the description and accounts of this game
- 15:26without the express written consent of the Pittsburgh Pirates is prohibited.
- 15:31Under the contractual arrangements of the Pirates for this broadcast,
- 15:34the announcers for this game have been selected by Station KDKA,
- 15:38subject to the approval of the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team.
- 15:43The umpires are at home plate, talking with the manager of the Bucks, Chuck Tanner,
- 15:47and the skipper of the Montreal Expos, Dick Williams.
- 15:50Let's take a look at the starting lineups.
- 15:52First of all, for the red, white, and blue Expos,
- 15:55they'll have Andre Dawson leading off and playing center field.
- 15:59Rodney Scott has beaten out Dave Cash for the starting second base spot of the Expos.
- 16:03Rodney Scott will bat second and play second base.
- 16:06Warren Cromartie will be the expo left fielder, and he'll be batting third.
- 16:11Alice Valentine will bat from the clean up spot.
- 16:13He'll be in right field.
- 16:15Tony Perez hitting number five will be at first base.
- 16:18That is Gary Carter, highly touted catcher of the Expos batting sixth.
- 16:23Larry Parrish will be in at third base batting seventh.
- 16:27Chris Speyer will be the Montreal shortstop hitting eighth.
- 16:31And Steve Rogers, center ball right-hander, born in Jefferson City, Missouri.
- 16:36He'll be pitching for Montreal and batting in the number nine spot.
- 16:40The starting lineup for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 16:42Chuck Tanner has put the Pirates down in this sequence.
- 16:45It'll be Frank Taveras leading off and playing shortstop.
- 16:49Omar Moreno hitting in the number two spot will be in center field.
- 16:53Dave Parker will be batting third.
- 16:55He'll be in right field.
- 16:57Wally Stargell will hit from the number four spot and play first base.
- 17:00Bill Robinson batting number five will be in left field.
- 17:04Ronnie Stennett hits sixth.
- 17:06He'll be at second base.
- 17:08Ed Och doing the catching and batting in the number seven spot.
- 17:12Bill Garner will be at third base hitting eighth.
- 17:14And Burt Blylevin batting in the number nine spot and doing the pitching.
- 17:19Well, this afternoon, as the Pittsburgh Pirates' parents unveiled to the crowd,
- 17:24he was welcomed to the National League by the Philly Fanatics.
- 17:28Philly Fanatics flown in especially for this opening day ceremony,
- 17:31and they're taking part in a battle head-to-head of dueling banjos.
- 17:36The Pittsburgh Pirates' parents and the Philly Fanatics.
- 17:41The umpires for this afternoon's game, and one of the four umpires is a professional umpire.
- 17:46Dave Pallone will be behind the plate.
- 17:48He is from the International League.
- 17:50His contract has been purchased by the National League.
- 17:53So Dave Pallone will call balls and strikes.
- 17:56Joe Schratz, who is from Barrington, Rhode Island, will be at first base.
- 18:01Ron Hudson from Pittsburgh will be at second.
- 18:04And Joe Mivas from Dormont will be the third base umpire.
- 18:13Pirates take the field.
- 18:18Pirates were a very impressive club at home in 1978.
- 18:23They were 55 and 26 at Three Rivers.
- 18:27And the Pirates' schedule would seem to help the ball club get off to a fast start,
- 18:34playing a large number of the games at home.
- 18:38Right now, the replay of last year's excitement.
- 18:42And the crowd here at Three Rivers Stadium was once again reliving the excitement
- 18:46of that final weekend against the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 18:49Oh, what a great weekend it was.
- 18:51The big one-run victories over Philadelphia on the Friday night.
- 18:55And then on Saturday, Stardale's grand slam on the first inning.
- 18:58We thought we were on our way, and it didn't work out, but oh, so close.
- 19:03First while I've been going to the Mons, second year wearing the black and gold
- 19:08of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 19:10Where's the Pirates as they take the field today,
- 19:13the first time in the club's history wearing their names on the back of their shirts?
- 19:17The mayor of Pittsburgh, Mayor Dick Calagieri, is here to throw out the first pitch.
- 19:22He's doing that now, down to a pirate box, past the buck-o-duck-out.
- 19:26We had mentioned that the governor, Dick Thornburg, had been scheduled to be here
- 19:30for the opening day and that the mayor would throw out the first ball on Sunday.
- 19:34But because of all the concerns in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania,
- 19:39the governor is mine quite obviously,
- 19:41but he's not exactly as on that concern at Three Mile Island,
- 19:44and so that's where the governor is at this moment,
- 19:46or he's working on things involving that.
- 19:48So the mayor of Pittsburgh here today to throw out the first pitch.
- 19:53Burt Blylevin, as he takes them on, 14-game winner a year ago, 136 lifetime victories.
- 20:01They help initially with the Minnesota Twins,
- 20:03and then a couple of seasons with the Texas Rangers.
- 20:05Throws a couple of different fastballs, one that rides, another that sinks.
- 20:09The advantage for Blylevin, of course, is that curveball,
- 20:11he'll also throw a straight change,
- 20:13but when you really come down to it for the Dutchman, Burt Blylevin, control is the important thing.
- 20:18Young man who was graduated from Santiago High School in Garden Grove, California,
- 20:23and he is on the mound.
- 20:25Good to be back home at Three Rivers Stadium, 335 down the line,
- 20:29375 to the power alleys, 400 feet to straightaway center field.
- 20:35And you know, it's kind of unusual to do an opening day with a guy
- 20:39that's been with us for a lot of opening days.
- 20:42George Cleave, a good friend of ours, has been with us a lot of ballgames,
- 20:45engineering our games, understand George has been under the weather, not feeling well.
- 20:49George, we want you to know that our thoughts are with you today,
- 20:52and we hope you'll enjoy this broadcast with me.
- 20:54Bring it to you from Three Rivers Stadium.
- 20:56Well, Milo, we're set to go.
- 20:57You were down on the field for the excitement of the free game,
- 21:01excitement, and I don't know what it is,
- 21:03but something about opening day that just brings out the little boy in everybody.
- 21:06Well, it certainly does, and the enthusiasm is here.
- 21:09There's no doubt about it.
- 21:10This town is ready for their buckos to go,
- 21:12and stepping in to lead it off will be center fielder Andre Dawson.
- 21:16Dawson will be followed by Scott and then Crowarty.
- 21:19Hot Dog Rappers and such will be blowing around this ballpark today.
- 21:22It's that kind of a day. It's windy and breezy.
- 21:25Everybody came bundled up for it, though,
- 21:27and they're ready for baseball 79 pirate style.
- 21:30Andre Dawson, right-hand batter, stands right in the middle of the batter's box.
- 21:34Lyle Evans, first pitch, foul back, and we're underway, and it's strike one.
- 21:38Ends up in the press box, so the Scribes get the first chance at a souvenir here today.
- 21:44Scott off on deck to the left side. He had a great spring for them.
- 21:49They had to find a place for him, and he's standing in place of Dave Cash.
- 21:52Here's the pitch. Strike called, and it's 0-2.
- 21:55Good breaking pitch. Started away inside, broke over that plate,
- 21:59and it's no balls and two strikes.
- 22:03The Dutchman brings it. He foul-tipped it evidently, and it's still 0-2.
- 22:11Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce weather, brother.
- 22:13We've got bright sunshine for an opening day.
- 22:18Justin, you did a good job. Great job with that luncheon yesterday, too.
- 22:22Got the bandwagon going. Bounce your right side.
- 22:25Captain Stardew bobbles it, picks it up, throws to Lyle Evans. In time.
- 22:29Score it, 3-1.
- 22:31That ball played a few tricks with him, but it's cold. Your hands are cold.
- 22:35And the Bucks here today came out of that one all right because he got the good bounce right to him.
- 22:40I think every player in an opening day would like the first ball of the game to be hit to them.
- 22:44They would love to get that first chance out of the way because they're butterflies,
- 22:48and you're just so tense and so pumped up, and Willie has the honors of handling that first-round ball.
- 22:54And what a reception he got yesterday at that luncheon. A standing ovation and a touching one it was.
- 23:00Scott batting left-handed against Blylevin. With nobody on base and one away.
- 23:05Pitch to him is up. A strike called at the letter.
- 23:14Scott with a 3-33 spring, had 18 hits.
- 23:18No balls, one strike. Blylevin, the opening day pitcher, working. Here it comes.
- 23:23Way inside and low on a breaking ball, and the count is even at 1-1.
- 23:27Be here tomorrow and again on Sunday. Tomorrow, a salute to the Super Steelers.
- 23:31Get here early for that. Then on Sunday, it's Star Jol Parker Day.
- 23:35They'll be picking up all their trophies that they earned last year.
- 23:38Here is the 1-1 pitch. Inside backs him out of there 2-1.
- 23:43And of course, tomorrow, the first 5,000 who come into the ballpark will get one of the new Pirate's secret weapons to wave.
- 23:49And on Sunday, everybody will get a beautiful picture of Captain Willie and the Cobra.
- 23:53Down low inside, balls behind Scott. 3 balls to one strike.
- 23:57Felipe Alou, who was quite a ball player from the Alou family.
- 24:01His brother, Matty, of course, was a batting champion as a Pirate.
- 24:04Felipe is their new third base coach. Aji Virgil has been there a while. He's over at first.
- 24:08Swing and a foul back. To start the season, Dick Williams has six coaches.
- 24:13Pat Mullins, their hitting instructor, is going to be with them early and then he'll go look at their minor leaguers a little bit.
- 24:18Today, an opening day, six coaches.
- 24:20Jim Brewer, Vern Rapp, saw Norm Sherry before the game.
- 24:23He looks like he's lost a little weight, but he says he's feeling good.
- 24:26Well, he's running every day after that open heart surgery, and here he is right back in a coaching uniform.
- 24:32That's down low. If the umpire could see it among all the hot dog rappers at home plate.
- 24:37And the first baserunner is Rodney Scott, their second baseman via the base on ball.
- 24:43Lauren Cromartie stepping in now. Cromartie had a 279 spring. Good, solid hitter, this fella.
- 24:51And a member of a trio of outfielders that rates with any of them.
- 24:54They've brought these kids along, Cromartie, Dawson, and Valentine.
- 25:01Scott at first with a walk. He has some speed. The Dutchman will have to watch him.
- 25:04Throws over there, but does not get him.
- 25:07335 to the foul pole, 375 to the power alleys, 400 to the center field wagon gate.
- 25:13Now Blylevin looks back, runner not going, pitching away, bouncer at his Senate.
- 25:16Could be two, flip to Frankie, one, fire to first. Yes, a double play.
- 25:21Taylor May, Renny to Frankie, to Captain Willey, second to short to first.
- 25:27And Blylevin works through the first inning for the visiting Expos.
- 25:32No runs and no hits. And after a half an inning, the Expos are scoreless with no hits.
- 25:37And our Buccos are just now coming into bat.
- 25:41When you say you're bad, you've said a lot of things nobody else can say. When you say you're bad, you've gone as far as you can go.
- 26:06You get the very best. There is no other word. There's only something left. Because the king of here is leading our way.
- 26:27When you say you're wiser, you've said it all.
- 26:37And I'm the Bush St. Louis.
- 26:46The catcher is Gary Carter, Tony Perez. Great credentials over the years with the Reds and with the Expos.
- 26:52Big RBI man, dangerous hitter. He's at first base. Rodney Scott, a surprise starter at second, edging out Dave Cash.
- 27:00Chris Spire, the shortstop. Larry Parrish, looks as though he blossomed last year the way they wanted him to.
- 27:06He's playing third base. In the outfield left to right, and we talked about this good young outfield,
- 27:11Warren Cromartie in left, Andre Dawson in center, Ellis Valentine in right. Pirate coaches in place, Joe Lannett, the old Beaver Man.
- 27:18The third, Al Monchek, is at first. So, we'd like to get off and running here against Rodgers, Lanny, because usually, as with good pitchers,
- 27:28if you don't get them early, they stick around. They're tough to get, and he's one of those kinds.
- 27:33Typically, at the start of a season, you'll see the pitchers be ahead in terms of timing on the hitters.
- 27:39And of course, when the colder weather comes around, there's another disadvantage for the hitters.
- 27:44Steve Rodgers, one of the premier pitchers, and if this club gives him enough runs throughout the year, he could be a 20-game winner in the National League.
- 27:50He has a good fastball, a sinking fastball, and a curve.
- 27:53All right, Frank Taveras leads it off, and the pitch to him swung on, a little looping pop out into shallow right center.
- 27:58And a drop in at Texas League base.
- 28:01So, Frank Taveras, who had his best year ever last year with the bats, starts it off with a Texas League single into right center field,
- 28:09and we've got a little indication that maybe that wind is going to bother balls of that kind today.
- 28:13You know, my Lord, I couldn't help that ball, it was going up in the right center.
- 28:16I had a little flashback to the Friday doubleheader when we won the ball game, that first game,
- 28:21a ball a little bit similar to that, right center, high pop, dropped in.
- 28:25All right, we'll take it, and here is Omar Moreno, the newlywed, the new bridegroom is stepping up in here.
- 28:31What a spring he had, the best one ever.
- 28:33Omar hit.350.
- 28:36All right, Taveras at first.
- 28:37Let's see if Chuck Tanner likes to go to his running game in a hurry.
- 28:40He is. The throw down will be late, so in base.
- 28:48Well, it didn't take long, did it?
- 28:50How far are we away from the record?
- 28:55And those of you who heard Chuck Tanner on the leadoff, man, he loves to have him running, you know that.
- 29:00That's his history.
- 29:02He didn't wait a pitch, brother, right after Frankie got the hit, first pitch to Omar.
- 29:06Frankie was going, Carter's throw was in the dirt, and Taveras in scoring position with nobody out,
- 29:12the count is 4-1 on the antelope.
- 29:14The Cobras do up next.
- 29:16Look back by Rodgers, the pitch, running it up the first base side.
- 29:20Rodgers over and grabs the ball, and I think they are going to say that it was foul when the pitcher got it in his glove,
- 29:27if the plate umpires motion out that way.
- 29:33Rodgers came over and grabbed the ball, but it looked like he had grabbed it and fouled round.
- 29:40But, Dave Pallone is the home plate umpire.
- 29:46Now they're talking with Dick Williams and the first base umpire, and they're saying that he tagged him.
- 29:55A little confusion there.
- 29:59But not the least of the confused were the men in blue, because finally after Williams appealed,
- 30:04the plate umpire then asked the first base umpire, he says he's out.
- 30:08Well on the play, Frankie came over, so in reality, Omar did what we wanted him to do, get the runner over to third.
- 30:16Here's Dave Parker.
- 30:19He's the picture, boys, on the cover of every magazine you pick up these days.
- 30:23Here's the pitch to him, swing and a miss.
- 30:27The ball sinking away from him, going down and away.
- 30:30So you score that last one, one unassisted.
- 30:33Parker with the most fabulous spring, hitting 470, 10 homers, 25 RBIs.
- 30:38He's won two straight batting titles. He's the defending most valuable player.
- 30:42Swing and a miss. Oh, and two. Good sharp breaking put the slider right in on his hands.
- 30:47So Rodgers started off with the ball down and away, brought it in on his hands on the second one.
- 30:52Rodgers in front of the Cobra, two strikes.
- 30:55What will they do up next? Dick Williams plays his infield up with Taveras at third and one out opening inning.
- 31:00Here's the pitch. Strike three, called, right on his hands.
- 31:04So Parker looks at called, strike three, and leaves a runner at third.
- 31:09That's where you like to get that sacrifice fly ball at least.
- 31:13Now it's up to Stardell.
- 31:16Well, a good location by Rodgers. I think even if Dave had gotten that feature of that ball,
- 31:19it wouldn't have been any more than a ground ball because he really ran the ball in on Dave.
- 31:23Willie Stardell for the spring at 200, three homers and seven RBIs.
- 31:27The comeback of the year in 78.
- 31:30Facing Rodgers who stretches and delivers.
- 31:33Fouled up to the left side, broke the bat off, the barrel of it went right by Rodgers' feet
- 31:37and it's laying out behind the mound and Joe Lynette will go out to get it.
- 31:41Now Taveras started it with a little looping Texas League single to right center.
- 31:45Promptly stole second, advanced the third when Moreno Bunning bended up the first base side.
- 31:51And after a moment of confusion, they finally said that the pitcher did indeed have the ball and tagged him.
- 31:56So that made it one out with a runner at third.
- 31:59Then the called strike three on Parker making a two down.
- 32:02Now Stardell breaking a bat, fouling off the first pitch.
- 32:05Coming out now with a new war club.
- 32:08The on deck hitter Bill Robinson. Fans in the stands where their radios will notice
- 32:12that the Bucks have their names on the back. First time they've ever had that.
- 32:15Everybody will have them this year.
- 32:18The league rule. No balls, one strike.
- 32:23Need that big clutch two out hit from Captain Willie. Taveras wanting to come home with the first run of the season.
- 32:30Rodgers checks in, from the belt brings it.
- 32:32Swing and a miss and a high fastball.
- 32:35Strike two on Stardell.
- 32:38Rodgers trying to work his way off the hook after being in first inning trouble quickly.
- 32:42Now is ahead of Stardell, two strikes with two down.
- 32:45Taveras up the line at third, maybe six or seven steps.
- 32:49No balls, two strikes as Carter drops the fingers. Rodgers responds by stretching to the belt.
- 32:54Here's the pitch. Way high, almost threw it away. Carter had to jump up to get it.
- 32:58One ball, two strikes.
- 33:00The Pirates and the Montreal Expos for an opening series. All three afternoon games.
- 33:06Tomorrow 2.15. Sunday 1.05.
- 33:10Remember all Sunday games this year will be at 1.05, whether they're single or double.
- 33:16One ball and two strikes. Stardell waiting. The pitch on the way.
- 33:20Breaking pitch with something off of it. State high outside.
- 33:25Two balls and two strikes. Boy, you consider the weather that this town got up to this morning.
- 33:30This is just one heck of a crowd, I want to tell you.
- 33:34But they're dressed for it. And in the bright sunshine, doesn't feel that bad.
- 33:38Two-two pitch. Swing and a miss, struck him out.
- 33:41Rodgers works his way out of a first inning trouble spot.
- 33:44And struck out Parker and Stardell to do it with Taveras 90 feet away.
- 33:48No runs, one hit. Stolen base. No errors, one left.
- 33:53We have played an inning.
- 33:54Milo Hamilton and Lanny Pretieri as always with Pirate Baseball from Three Rivers today.
- 33:59Wish you were all here for the opener. After an inning, it's the Expos nothing, the Pirates nothing.
- 34:04Something Wonderful. That's Center Video's Hollywood Home Theater.
- 34:09With something wonderful and entertainment for everybody.
- 34:12Take hockey, basketball, and baseball for example.
- 34:14In the month ahead on Center Video, you'll see the NHL and NBA playoffs and those glorious Mets.
- 34:20And all because Center Video brings you sports and all-night movies from New York, clear as a crystal.

- 34:35Also during the next few months, you'll see Mel Brooks' High Anxiety, Neil Simon's Goodbye Girl, Sylvester Stallone in Fist,
- 34:41the Buddy Holly story, Semi-Tough with Burt Reynolds, and Coming Home with Jane Fonda.
- 34:46Center Video has something for everybody and something to look forward to.
- 34:50Such as Saturday Night Fever, The Cheap Detective, The Fury, and Omen 2.
- 34:54Call Center Video, 231-7414. If you don't have Center Video, you don't have home entertainment.
- 35:00Call 231-7414.
- 35:06Go to the second inning, Scarlet's at Three Rivers.
- 35:09Valentine, the right fielder. Tony Perez, the first baseman.
- 35:12And catcher Gary Carter, due up in that order against Burt Lyle of it.
- 35:17The Philly Fanatic is here, battling with our Pirate Parrot.
- 35:22And the Philly Fanatic starts right off where he does at home.
- 35:27He's making time with one of the Pirates, gave her a big smooch, and then collapsed right on the diamond.
- 35:33All right, here's Ellis Valentine, a 309 spring, one Homer 8 RBI.
- 35:40Here's a guy who can be just as good as he wants to be.
- 35:44Right fielder, Ellis Valentine.
- 35:48All right, Blyleven ready.
- 35:52And his first pitch in the second inning, flung on and fouled out of play off to the right side.
- 35:57Valentine with a good arm, good outfielder. He can hit for power. He drives and runs.
- 36:02And a good base runner for a big guy.
- 36:04He's a little in the mold of Parker.
- 36:07However, doesn't seem to have the drive that a Parker does.
- 36:11No balls, one strike.
- 36:13Right hand batting outfielder, Ellis Valentine.
- 36:15He's been knocking some off that left shin, hasn't he? He's got a shin guard on.
- 36:19Outside, an off-speed pitch, straight change, one ball, one strike.
- 36:26Right hand pitcher kicks and brings, and a fly ball, center field.
- 36:30Moreno started back, now pulls up, pounds the glove, and a little pass it, went away.
- 36:35Valentine with a fly ball to center.
- 36:39And that'll make it one down and bring up first baseman Tony Perez.
- 36:42Who?
- 36:43Last year, as in many years, hurt the Bucs with his home run bat.
- 36:48Tony Perez had a 321 spring, four homers, 10 RBIs.
- 36:52He brings that bat back and he is strong and when he cocks it,
- 36:57no matter what the game or what the situation, he's a tough out.
- 37:01Fouled off, almost got that ball by him. That was a late cut.
- 37:05There's that banner out in right field, Annie.
- 37:08I told the fans to look at it long and hard in the pregame ceremonies.
- 37:11Think Kenneth. They've got it here today. They had it here last year.
- 37:15That was the one that was torn up the last weekend and the youngster stayed up all night and worked on it.
- 37:19Made a new one. Fly ball center, Moreno back, Moreno there.
- 37:23Deep left center, about four feet short of the track.
- 37:27So two fly balls to center.
- 37:30Moreno has reacted very well on those two balls because that wind is whirling in here.
- 37:34Very difficult often to tell in a singular stadium just how the winds are reacting,
- 37:38but it does appear on the two balls that are hitting here in the second, Valentine and Perez's fly balls,
- 37:42that it seems to be blowing in the center field area back towards home plate
- 37:46because those two balls seem to get up there in that wind and then kind of dive back a little bit.
- 37:50Catcher Gary Carter, a 174 spring, but half of his eight hits were out of the park.
- 37:55Four homers, eight RBIs.
- 37:58And a strike called right in on his hand.
- 38:01The on-deck hitter is third baseman Larry Parrish.
- 38:03We're in the second inning and no score. Pirates saw a first inning chance go by the board.
- 38:07Here's the pitch.
- 38:10Breaking pitch swung on fly ball, right center.
- 38:12Moreno going to have to get on his horse.
- 38:14Yes, he's got it! Unbelievable!
- 38:17Holy, Tullido, what a play!
- 38:19Center field and three rivers where the Antelope plays and does he ever.
- 38:24He's going to get a standing ovation as he comes in here.
- 38:27None of the plays were easy. The last one was tough.
- 38:30He simply outran the ball.
- 38:32Great play by Omar Moreno.
- 38:35The fans greet him as he comes in on the first base side.
- 38:39Three up and three down for Fly 11. We played an inning and a half.
- 38:43Montreal nothing. The Pirates nothing.
- 38:45Think of yourself in a special way.
- 38:49In a new little color like ever.
- 38:53Think of yourself behind the wheel.
- 38:57Enjoying a special little color field.
- 39:00Where people seem to ride.
- 39:05Think of yourself in a personal world of space, comfort, and hushed luxury.
- 39:10With a satisfying feel of the road under you.
- 39:13And crisp classic styling around you that says,
- 39:16This is something special.
- 39:18And it is Monte Carlo by Chevrolet.
- 39:21Drive one and reward yourself.
- 39:24Think of yourself behind the wheel.
- 39:27Enjoying a special Monte Carlo field.
- 39:31Where people seem to ride.
- 39:35The new Monte Carlo by Chevrolet.
- 39:38Put a little distance between yourself and the crowd.
- 39:47Before we go to the Pirates second and three rivers here on opening day
- 39:50with no score in our game as yet.
- 39:52But the crowd has been thrilled by a great running catch in deep right center by Omar Moreno.
- 39:56Let's break quickly for station identification.
- 39:59Let all of our stations around the five state area tell you who they are and where they're coming from.
- 40:03Right here on this, the Pirate Baseball Network.
- 40:07Music
- 40:18Bill Robinson will lead it off in the second inning.
- 40:21Bill playing left field today.
- 40:22He'll be followed by second baseman, Renny Stenet.
- 40:24And then the catcher at up.
- 40:26Robbie after a slow start in spring training ended up with a good one.
- 40:29Off speed curve comes inside a high, ducks under at ball one.
- 40:33Robinson ended up 275 with three homers and ten runs batted in.
- 40:37Bothered by a calf pull.
- 40:40There's a high foul up to the right side, one and one.
- 40:43Also had a little cartilage pull in his left chest that bothered him the last week at spring training.
- 40:50But knowing Bill Robinson as you do so well, he will play with those injuries.
- 40:56Rodgers winding one, one pitch.
- 40:58Look out, off speed again high inside, two and one.
- 41:04One of the new innovations here, they've planted grass.
- 41:08They put sod down in our bullpens to keep that dirt from blowing around so much under the field.
- 41:13Now all they've got to do is buy a new lawn mower.
- 41:16They haven't had one since they left Ford Field.
- 41:19Here's the two one pitch swung on and fouled out of play over to the left side.
- 41:30Go Bill Robinson with a two ball, two strike count.
- 41:33Bucks batting in the second.
- 41:34One hit, it belongs to Frank Taveras.
- 41:36He's also stolen a base.
- 41:40All right, a level count of two two.
- 41:41Rodgers rocks and brings it.
- 41:43Foul back, rolls up the screen here to the right side.
- 41:49Speaking of those covers that we were with Dave Parker, he and Jim Rice from the Red Sox share the cover on Sports Illustrated.
- 41:57Parker's the cover on the sporting news, baseball digest.
- 42:02Here's the two two pitch.
- 42:03Swing and another foul out of play over to the right side.
- 42:13President of the Pirates, Dan Galbraith and the family and all the folks over from Columbus.
- 42:18His dad, the chairman of the board, John, I don't think was able to make it today because of the illness of Mrs. Galbraith.
- 42:23Bouncer third.
- 42:24Long throw by Parrish will get him on a bouncer.
- 42:29Tony Perez stayed right with it.
- 42:30A long throw, maybe from 15 back of third and right on the line.
- 42:34Parrish didn't seem to get a heck of a lot on the throw, but had enough to get the runner at first, Bill Robinson, and it went away.
- 42:42So third to first, Parrish to Perez.
- 42:47Here's Rennie Stenet.
- 42:49Rennie Stenet appeared in the spring games to be ready to go again full tilt.
- 42:53Made three marvelous plays Monday against the twins in Orlando.
- 42:57Bouncer deep short toward the bag.
- 42:59Spires throw to Perez, gets him, and it's two down.
- 43:03Short to first, Chris Spire to Tony Perez.
- 43:06That'll bring up catcher Ed Ott.
- 43:08Ott with a 271 spring has three RBIs.
- 43:11First couple weeks of spring training, Ott tried to battle through a sore shoulder.
- 43:16Then they just simply had to give him a few days off and let him be a designated hitter or play outfield in some of the B games.
- 43:23But as he came north, he felt that the shoulder was ready.
- 43:26Swing and a miss, ran it up and in on the otter.
- 43:29Nobody on, two down.
- 43:30Second inning, Expos and Pirates scoreless so far.
- 43:34First game in a three-game set, the pitch.
- 43:37Checked it on an off-speed pitch. Did he go?
- 43:40They asked. Third base umpire says no, he didn't.
- 43:42Puts the palms down, so it goes as a ball, and the count is even at one and one.
- 43:48Pirate baseball, 79, a battle in bucks.
- 43:52Trying to get it off and running here against the Expos, one-one pitch.
- 43:55Swing and a miss with a fastball, challenging him upstairs.
- 43:58There's no secret about it, the book pitching against Ed Ott as he has trouble with that pitch high and in,
- 44:04especially the high fastball, and that's what Rogers is beating him right here.
- 44:08One-two pitch, swinging and pops it right side.
- 44:12Second baseman Rodney Scott to his right and in, has it, and it's three up and three down for the Montreal right-handers, Steve Rogers.
- 44:20We've played through two innings at still, Montreal nothing and the Pirates nothing.
- 44:25Whether you're at Three Rivers Stadium or at home, there is one big league taste treat that naturally goes with Pirates baseball,
- 44:33Con's Wieners, the official hot dog of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 44:36The reason they taste so good, the reason that they are used exclusively at the stadium is simple.
- 44:41Con's Wieners are made from quality ingredients.
- 44:43Con's uses lean beef and juicy pork, only first quality cuts of meat.
- 44:47They never add fillers or cereal extenders, and they don't use meat byproducts or artificial coloring.
- 44:52In fact, a pound of Con's Wieners contains less fat than an uncooked 16-ounce T-bone steak.
- 44:58Con's uses great meat, and that makes great tasting Wieners.
- 45:01You also should try Con's Big Buck Kielbasa links, a coarsely ground blend of tender, tasty pork and beef with just the right spices.
- 45:08Big Bucks gives you that old world Kielbasa flavor.
- 45:11So if you're listening to the ball game, Con's Wieners and Big Bucks go with Pirates baseball.
- 45:16Look for the Pittsburgh Pirates insignia on the package. It's your assurance of good taste.
- 45:20Remember, great meat makes great Wieners. You can depend on Con's.
- 45:25Well, as opening days come and go, a lot of people never miss them, but Phil Mackey of Oil City,
- 45:33he's attending his 32nd consecutive opener today.
- 45:38And our old pal Irv Bell out here today, seeing an opener also, as for many, many years.
- 45:45Tony Baderum and some of the players have a good friend.
- 45:48Tony, of course, our very fine trainer, along with the Candyman and Bruce Keeson and Jim Rutter and Willie Stargell,
- 45:54good friends of Little Joe Panabianco in Westmoreland Hospital.
- 45:59So Little Joe, the guys are thinking about you, and as you listen to the game, hope you're feeling better.
- 46:05Larry Parrish, third baseman, who will lead it off against Blylevin as we go to the third, no score.
- 46:10He's pulled off, right side, back into the seat.
- 46:19Spire has moved on deck. Third inning.
- 46:23Blylevin walks scab in the first, but then Comardi hit into a double play.
- 46:27Bouncer toward the hole and shoots through there. A diving Garner couldn't head it off.
- 46:32Robinson Upwood throws it into DeVarice out by the second base bag.
- 46:35It's the first Montreal hit of the afternoon, and it comes to lead off the third inning.
- 46:43Old Scraps left his feet and took the headlong dive, but just wasn't able to make it.
- 46:48Not for lack of effort, though, was it? Here is shortstop Chris Spire.
- 46:56Spire was bothered by a back ailment most of the spring, and as a result hit only one 18.
- 47:02Batting eighth in the order for Dick Williams today. Runner at first base, not a big lead.
- 47:06Blylevin's pitch down low. One ball and no strikes.
- 47:12Pitcher Steve Rogers will be next. Montreal figures to have the best team they've had in their history.
- 47:19They've put together a good one in the last couple of years. Throw to first, not close.
- 47:23They've got a representative pitching staff now also.
- 47:27They don't give games away anymore. This is a good Montreal team.
- 47:32Throw to first, a little closer, but he's back in time.
- 47:45All right, he checks and looks back. Pitch on the way.
- 47:47Spire sends a high fly ball up to the right side. Spire is a good man to hit and run with.
- 47:56And he looked right there like all of the runner wasn't moving.
- 47:58It looked like he was trying to go to the open field with Blylevin.
- 48:02Parrish, who started the inning with a base hit through the hole on the left side, is at first base.
- 48:06Starchel trying to hold him close. Third inning. Pirates had the only threat that was in the opening inning.
- 48:13It didn't materialize. High chopper short.
- 48:16Frankie has to back up. His only play will be to stun it. Force play on Parrish.
- 48:20That ball took one big extra bounce. Frankie had to back up and let the ball play him a bit.
- 48:24That took any thought of a double playoff, and with the two big loops, it might have been tough to do it anyway.
- 48:29But he gets the front man, and that's the main thing right there.
- 48:32Six to four, short to second, Taveras to stun it, and he puts Spire at first base with a fielder's choice.
- 48:41Steve Rogers, the pitcher.
- 48:45Bouting with the runner at first, and Spire one away. Montreal batting in the third inning.
- 48:49The hips are even at one. There's no score. There have been no errors in the early going.
- 48:54Expecting a bunt, and it comes high and inside. He kind of went down to a knee to get out of the way.
- 49:02Rogers now looking at his third base coach, Philippe Hélou. What a leadoff man he used to be.
- 49:08He had 30 home runs one year as a leadoff man.
- 49:12Well, that gets you in front in a lot of games in a hurry, doesn't it?
- 49:16Strike one to count, and Garner thinks butt again. Squares away, but the ball came high inside.
- 49:22That'll even the count at a ball and a strike.
- 49:26The game goes on as the Pirates and the Montreal Expos play the Pirate Home Opener.
- 49:32Of course, several teams have already been underway.
- 49:37A couple days ago, some. Throw to first, runner was leaning a little, but got back.
- 49:42Yesterday, Ron Gidry had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning, then the roof fell in.
- 49:46And Mike Caldwell, last year's comeback of the year in the American League, beat him in a route-going performance on opening day at Yankee Stadium.
- 49:53Now, thinking bunt, and then Blylevin steps away, and Garner backs off a bit.
- 49:58Garner's going to come up again, though, at third. Runner not going. Squares away to bunt. Bunts it up in the air.
- 50:02It's going to come back up on the screen, and it is one ball and two strikes.
- 50:11Runner at first, fire. They're on a fielder's choice. Montreal batting in the third.
- 50:17We had some excitement in that first inning when Frankie got a hit and promptly stole second.
- 50:21Then, of course, the great play in the second inning by Omar Moreno simply outran a long fly ball in right center off the bat of Gary Carter.
- 50:29But no scorer to report. Zero-zero on that big board here at Three Rivers.
- 50:33The pitch, he's going to bunt, and he comes up empty, and it's strike three.
- 50:39That is the first strikeout for the Dutchman here today.
- 50:45Oh, you look at his credentials, Lanny, and the time that he's been in the game and the career that he has ahead of him.
- 50:52Blylevin's going to join that 3,000-strikeout total before he's through, and he's going to get to 2,000 early in this season.
- 50:59You know, Burt thought last year that blaming himself, he felt that in many games he tried to rush a little bit late in ball games,
- 51:06and he felt that's what hurt him in certain circumstances in 78.
- 51:09All right, the pitch now to the leadoff batter, Dawson, a breaking pitch down and away, 1-0.
- 51:15Got off the little shaky start last year, but once he got in the groove, he put some marvelous game.
- 51:20One ball and no strikes.
- 51:23Spire first, not with a big lead. Stargell trying to keep him close.
- 51:27Blylevin to the belt. Here's the pitch.
- 51:29Shot to third, knocked down by Geiner.
- 51:31Going to have to make a long throw, and he got him. That's the way to stay with it, Scraps.
- 51:37Ball dropped right at his feet when he knocked it down.
- 51:39Had the good, strong throw on target to Stargell.
- 51:42Geiner across the diamond, then it retires the side with no runs, one hit, no errors, and Spire was left.
- 51:48We played into the middle of the third. Pitchers' battle so far.
- 51:51Exposed nothing, pirates nothing.
- 52:16Hi, this is Kent DeCauley. You know, the tall, skinny right-hander who comes out of the Pirate Bullpen in the late innings,
- 52:22hopefully to record a win or a save.
- 52:24The Red Bull liked my work out of the Bullpen so much, they asked me to be their spokesman for special pirate promotions.
- 52:30And I liked their food so much, I said yes.
- 52:33You'll be hearing about these promotions very soon.
- 52:35But right now, I just want to invite you back to Three Rivers Stadium for some great baseball excitement,
- 52:40and back to the Red Bull Inn for a great dining experience.
- 52:43Here you'll be back, coming on back to the Red Bull. Coming on back to the Red Bull.
- 52:54All right, here we are going to the bottom of the third at Three Rivers on opening day.
- 53:00And of course, this big weekend with a lot of things to come.
- 53:03Tomorrow, Art Rooney, the grand gentleman of throw football with his super steelers.
- 53:09Many of them will be here. They'll be honored by the pirates.
- 53:14And the first 5,000 tomorrow will get that big new secret weapon as a gift.
- 53:21Then on Sunday, a salute to Stargell and Parker.
- 53:24They get all their trophies from last year, and they also will give to you, everybody who comes Sunday, a beautiful,
- 53:30and I just saw it before the game, a beautiful color picture of Captain Willie Stargell and the Cobra, Dave Parker.
- 53:36You talk about a souvenir suitable for framing. That picture you're going to get on Sunday is just that.
- 53:42Here's Garner getting another hand for staying with that play to retire the Expos in the top of the inning.
- 53:48And the pitch to Scraps is low of all.
- 53:52Garner fought himself a little bit the first three weeks of spring training with the bats,
- 53:55but the last week looked like he had it back. Ended up with a 268 spring.
- 54:01Swinging and fouling way up to the right side. One ball, one strike.
- 54:05Looked as though the last week that he choked up on the bat a little and shortened up his stroke,
- 54:10and was just getting those nice lane drive hits out over second and out over short.
- 54:18He's batting now with a ball and a strike, leading off the third.
- 54:21Blyleven on deck. Rogers delivering.
- 54:24There's a strike. Boy, that had some velocity over the knees on the outside corner.
- 54:28You know, I think to an extent, Phil Hanson happens from time to time of trying to carry a little bit of the club.
- 54:33I think in spring training, he wanted to help the club get off to that fast start,
- 54:36and I think he maybe pushed himself more than he really had to.
- 54:39All right, so now with all the garbage flying around by home plate and blowing into our dugout,
- 54:46candy wrappers look like potato chips, hot dog.
- 54:50Some brown baggers also here, and it's flying all over the place.
- 54:56There's a fouled jammed him, almost sawed the bat off, fouled it back here over on the left side.
- 55:02And it's one ball and two strikes.
- 55:04By the way, I don't think we've mentioned it yet.
- 55:07Jerry Royce is in a pirate dugout.
- 55:09If you're wondering the outcome of that yet, it's still pending.
- 55:13It looks like it's going to go through, but there's still some contractual things to be worked out.
- 55:18So Royce is still in a pirate uniform.
- 55:20All right, the one-two to scrap iron. Strike three, call.
- 55:24A buzz bomb on the outside corner.
- 55:27Boy, he gave Straps a couple of tough pitches to handle away.
- 55:30That is his third strikeout.
- 55:33You got Parker and Starjil back to back in the first.
- 55:35Now starts off the first getting garnered.
- 55:38Here's the picture of Bert Wilev and the birthday boy.
- 55:41His 28th birthday.
- 55:44And when he was celebrating his first birthday, I was walking down the aisle.
- 55:53Hey, that's right. Today's an anniversary day for you, isn't it?
- 55:56Yeah, 27th wedding anniversary today.
- 55:59Swing and a foul back.
- 56:01Well, congratulations to you on our lead.
- 56:03Thank you very much.
- 56:05And the bride, who still looks as good as she did that first day, is here.
- 56:08What happened to the groom?
- 56:10The groom's gotten a little older.
- 56:13Here's the 0-1 pitch.
- 56:14Swinging at a high bounce back of the mound. Could be trouble.
- 56:17Second baseman won't have a play. Bare-handed it and then dropped it.
- 56:20And it rolled clear of pass to third baseline.
- 56:24Ball got on that artificial carpet and jumped about 30 feet in the air.
- 56:28It was a rush to get it from the pitcher.
- 56:30Second baseman in shortstop.
- 56:32Rodney Scott, their second baseman, tried to bare-hand it and throw,
- 56:36but came up empty and the ball rolled away from him.
- 56:39So Wilev is on with the second pirate hit of the game.
- 56:49All right, here is Frank Taveras, who has the other hit.
- 56:52He started the first inning with it, a Texas League single,
- 56:54into right center field and promptly stole second base.
- 56:57So here we are with a runner at first. Wilev has on the windbreaker.
- 57:00He got to wear it today, brother.
- 57:02You don't want that arm to get chilled today.
- 57:05The stretch look back, pitch to Frankie.
- 57:07Got a punt, low outside, laid off of it, and it's ball one.
- 57:11This is the kind of a game where you play for a run.
- 57:13Might be enough with two great pitchers going, Wilev and Rogers.
- 57:21One ball and no strikes.
- 57:25The look, the pitch.
- 57:27Butting foul, rolls off to the right side.
- 57:29Al Monchek will pick it up over there.
- 57:35Well, I was especially pleased with the opening ceremonies today
- 57:38to see the fans that remembered and gave the great welcome to Bob Skinner,
- 57:42who is back as our hitting coach, and to Harvey Haddix,
- 57:45who is our new pitching coach.
- 57:47I know they loved every minute of it and every round of applause they got.
- 57:51Made them feel welcome and we're glad to have them back from the coaching family.
- 57:54Joining the holdovers, Joe Lanette and Al Monchek.
- 57:59One ball, one strike.
- 58:00DeVarris waiting to see if the butt is still on.
- 58:02It is, but it's into the dirt and he lays off a good stop of that ball by Gary Carter.
- 58:08He's a good one back there.
- 58:09He's alive and he's got a good arm.
- 58:11Used to play the outfield.
- 58:14They made a catch out of him two or three years ago,
- 58:16and he's responded back there in good shape.
- 58:19Two balls and one strike.
- 58:24Lyle Levin at first with an infield hit.
- 58:27Stretched by Rodgers' pitch on the way.
- 58:28No butt this time.
- 58:29Bouncer third.
- 58:30Parrish will go to second one.
- 58:32Fire to first.
- 58:33Double play.
- 58:35So that goes around the horn.
- 58:37Parrish to Scott to Perez.
- 58:39Third to second to first.
- 58:41And the double play ends the inning.
- 58:43No runs.
- 58:44One hit, no errors.
- 58:45With the DP, nobody left.
- 58:47We have now played three.
- 58:48Milo Hamilton and Lanny Fritari with exciting battle and buck baseball for you all season long.
- 58:53And after three innings, Montreal Expos nothing, Pittsburgh Pirates nothing.
- 58:57Updating the news, some so-called bugs in a pumping system are reportedly hampering the cleanup efforts at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Plant near Harrisburg.
- 59:05The pumping is designed to transfer radiated gas from the main reactor building to a radiation-free outlet.
- 59:11The national unemployment rate remains stable at 5.7 percent for the month of March.
- 59:15Experts see the figure is showing the economy continues to be strong.
- 59:19The Coast Guard continues efforts to rescue 20 crewmen from a Canadian ore freighter breaking up in Lake Erie.
- 59:24The vessel ran into trouble as hurricane force winds whipped the Great Lakes.
- 59:28The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has banned motorcycles and many types of towed vehicles from the toll road.
- 59:34Due to high winds, the ban will be in effect until further notice.
- 59:37The weather outlook, very windy and cold the rest of the day, a high of only 33.
- 59:41Some snow flurries tonight, diminishing winds, dropping down to 22.
- 59:45Sunny, warmer tomorrow, looking for a high of 45.
- 59:48More news headlines following the sixth inning of pirate baseball.
- 59:51John Hadar, KDKA News.
- 59:54All right, three-inning total board at Three Rivers for the opener. Montréal, no runs, one hit, no errors.
- 1:00:12With Steve Rogers on the mound, their base hit belongs to Parrish.
- 1:00:15For the Pirates, no runs, two hits, no errors.
- 1:00:18The base hits belong to Tavares and Gwylevin.
- 1:00:21Gwylevin, of course, rolling along here against Rogers.
- 1:00:24Both pitchers doing very well.
- 1:00:26Lanny, I think one note we ought to give to the fans listening and also to those in the ballpark.
- 1:00:31With the radios on, we've got a new traffic pattern making it easier to get out of this ballpark.
- 1:00:36That's been one of the beefs.
- 1:00:37And the ball club and the city fathers have responded to it.
- 1:00:41They're going to make it easier to get out.
- 1:00:42And when you leave the ballpark anytime you come, get the new traffic maps.
- 1:00:46As you leave the stadium, they're available at the information booths.
- 1:00:49And I think if that's one pattern we've seen here in the shakeup in the front office of doing things,
- 1:00:54they've been good listeners and they're trying to do things to respond to the fans' wishes.
- 1:00:58And we're going to respond to the wish of Lanny Fraterry right now and get him in here for the middle.
- 1:01:03All right, thank you very much.
- 1:01:04That's right, the folks in city, county, and state government have all helped in this new traffic flow idea.
- 1:01:10And people here this weekend, the opening weekend, will receive special maps to outline the new traffic flow ideas.
- 1:01:16Rodney Scott, switch hitter, batting from the left side against Bly 11.
- 1:01:19He takes high ball one.
- 1:01:20We've got a Scholar's ball game in the top of the fourth inning on a sunny opening day.
- 1:01:26Thank you very much for being with us this afternoon.
- 1:01:28Burt Bly 11 working against the Montreal Expos.
- 1:01:311-0 pitch.
- 1:01:32Scott takes a strike and it's one and one.
- 1:01:34A couple of the things.
- 1:01:36Scott had a great spring.
- 1:01:37Second of all, they're a little concerned.
- 1:01:39David Cash has had trouble turning the double play.
- 1:01:41They think Scott might be their answer at second base.
- 1:01:43And no doubt about it with Scott in the lineup, he gives Montreal an added touch of speed.
- 1:01:501-1 pitch breaking ball inside and it's two and one.
- 1:01:54I want to say hello and congratulations to Mike and Sally Dedurich earlier this week.
- 1:02:00And we forgot to do it in our final spring game, but they celebrated the birth of their first child, Ryan Michael Dedurich.
- 1:02:08Mike, a good young sports writer with the McKeesport Daily News.
- 1:02:14To Mike and Sally, our congratulations.
- 1:02:19Rodney Scott.
- 1:02:30Picked up from the Chicago Cubs.
- 1:02:33Along with that, Jerry White in the deal that sent Sam Mejias over to the Cubs trade-off in December of 78.
- 1:02:42Well, the National League yesterday, the New York Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 10-6.
- 1:02:49And the San Diego Padres knocked off the National League defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3.
- 1:02:57The games today and all the other games of the National League are tonight. The San Francisco Giants at Cincinnati to play the Reds.
- 1:03:05Of course, the Giants won the National League opener on Wednesday, bombing Tom Siebert.
- 1:03:10Tom Montefiusco is scheduled to go for the Giants against Tom Hume and the Reds.
- 1:03:15Philadelphia will be at St. Louis. Start of a weekend set for the Phillies and Cardinals.
- 1:03:20Steve Carlton against John Denny.
- 1:03:22Atlanta to Houston for Phil Neekro, a 19-game winner of a year ago against Houston right-hander and 18-game winner of last year, James Rodney Richards.
- 1:03:31And the Padres and the Dodgers again in Los Angeles tonight.
- 1:03:34Randy Jones, 13 and 14 last year against Don Sutton, 15 and 11.
- 1:03:40Here at Three Rivers, we're in the fourth inning. Two balls and a strike on Rodney Scott.
- 1:03:45Scott walked in the first inning.
- 1:03:47There's a ground ball up the middle. Shortstop Taveras to his left, down near the bag, has it, throws to Stardale.
- 1:03:52And one away in the fourth inning. Good play by Frankie.
- 1:03:56He was cheating a couple of steps to his right, closer to the third base line and in a bit with Rodney Scott in the batter's box.
- 1:04:03One down, nobody on top of the fourth.
- 1:04:06Here's Warren Cromartie.
- 1:04:12Cromartie bounced into a double play in the first inning.
- 1:04:16A lot of welcome to all of our news stations along the radio network.
- 1:04:19Network that goes all the way from Holy Ann, New York, down into the deepest reaches of almost heaven, West Virginia.
- 1:04:29Whether you're in New York State, Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, listening, welcome aboard to the 79th season.
- 1:04:36Pitch from Flyleven to Cromartie down to 0-2-0.
- 1:04:45Here's the 2-0 pitch. Jammed over the fly ball in the right center field.
- 1:04:49Omar Moreno drifting under it. Glove up, makes the catch.
- 1:04:54And two down on the fourth inning. Moreno has four put outs of this game already.
- 1:04:58He handled all three fly balls in the second, including the one on Carter, which Omar made an outstanding running catch in the power alley.
- 1:05:07Ten long a speedy recovery wish to one of our concession men. First time in 55 years that he's missed a pirate opener.
- 1:05:16Pat Matza.
- 1:05:19Or Maza. Pat?
- 1:05:22Hope he's getting better.
- 1:05:24Here's Ellis Valentine. He's 0-1. First pitch from Flyleven, ball one. Nobody on, two down. We're in the fourth.
- 1:05:29The Expos have only had two baserunners against Flyleven. One reached in a walk and the other on a base hit.
- 1:05:34A single. Valentine takes a strike and it's 1-1.
- 1:05:37Got Valentine on the cleanup spot.
- 1:05:41We've seen him number three spot. Yeah, got him number four.
- 1:05:461-1 pitch. Down the low, 2-1.
- 1:05:49And a note from Vice President Joe O'Toole. Passed it along that Mr. Ange Monaco and Mr. Mike Lebov, great pirate fans,
- 1:05:58they're missing their first pirate opener in many, many years. Ange and Mike, hope to see you out here back with us real soon.
- 1:06:05Pitch, two ball, two strikes.
- 1:06:20Playing Valentine straight away with the exception of Parker, Davis deep and right and a couple of struts towards the gap.
- 1:06:252-2 pitch, curve ball, check swing, foul ball. Off to the right out of play.
- 1:06:35Bird Flyleven, born in Holland. He and his family moved to Saskatoon, Canada when Bird was two years of age.
- 1:06:42And then when Bird was five, the family moved into California.
- 1:06:47Here's the 2-2 pitch. Outside, three and two. Bird's dad in California drives a molasses truck.
- 1:06:55Big family. Bird is one of seven children. He has four brothers and two sisters.
- 1:07:02This is his 28th birthday.
- 1:07:06Nobody on two down, no score in the fourth inning. 3-2 pitch is down, low ball four, second walk issued by Flyleven.
- 1:07:13You know, Lanny, we've talked about it with a little nip in the air here today, but you really got to give these great athletes a lot of credit.
- 1:07:19A lot of people say, well, they're pros. They got to be playing in this kind of weather.
- 1:07:23But in this kind of game where you don't have that chance to go for that contact and brush it off and get ready, it's tough to get loose on a day like today.
- 1:07:30And you see Flyleven continually blowing hot air into his hand. It's tough on the hitters. Every time they make contact, that bat stings today.
- 1:07:37Yeah, it's a little different. Pitch is fouled off by Perez. He lined it down there on both ends. Strike one.
- 1:07:43Line catch down that left-handed line.
- 1:07:46And it makes it doubly tough when you think 48 hours ago we were basking at 80 degree temperatures.
- 1:07:51Yeah, it's tough for the fans, too, trying to catch a foul ball. If you don't bring a pair of gloves along on a day like today, you'll remember opening day for about four months.
- 1:07:59Here's the stretch by the Dutchman through the first base, and Valentine is back safely two down.
- 1:08:08Nothing like an opening day. Oh, here there's something.
- 1:08:11Here's the stretch by Burt. 0-1 pitch. Over the top of the fastball. Perez takes a strike, and Flyleven has Perez in a hole over two.
- 1:08:21You know, Dale Barry, remember I talked about it on the air the other day. He told me how much it meant to him to be here, that he was going to be here opening day.
- 1:08:27I watched him as I was mentioning him in the dugout for the opening ceremony. His eyes were as big as so much.
- 1:08:33Here's the 0-2 pitch. Bounce foul outside of third.
- 1:08:37Here's Dale, who was very young when his dad played with the Yankees, but I'm sure he remembers a lot of the opening days at the New York Mets.
- 1:08:44He's a real study and case in point that no matter how used you'd think you'd get to it growing up with it all around him, he was more excited than anybody on this opening day.
- 1:09:02Valentine at first, two down.
- 1:09:06Here's the stretch by Flyleven on the 0-2 pitch. Breaking ball outside, one and two.
- 1:09:19Valentine at first base, he walked after two away. Rodney Scablon off the inning and bounced at. Carl Marty flied out.
- 1:09:26What's he going to do with Valentine here on a one-two pitch to Perez?
- 1:09:30He's running. Thought he might be. Ball two, out for the second base. Not in time. Ball hit the runner, but Taveras backing up as the ball skipped into center field.
- 1:09:38Had a feeling with two strikes they were going to run Valentine there.
- 1:09:43And the cap two and two.
- 1:09:58No score in the ball game. Valentine is the first Montreal runner to reach second base.
- 1:10:05Bucks had a chance on the first. We were knocking at the door with Taveras at third. Rogers closed the lid on the pirate opening inning rally.
- 1:10:12Two-two pitch. Over the top of the curve ball struck him out. Second strikeout for Flyleven.
- 1:10:18Montreal to the fourth. No runs, no hits. One man left down base. And after three and a half innings of play, it's the Pirates nothing and Montreal nothing.
- 1:10:29When you say but, why the? When you say but. But. You say a lot, say nobody other can say. You say but. But. You've done it but you can't go through, said the fan.
- 1:10:52When you say but, you say the word, you know what makes it all the way.
- 1:11:00When you say but, you can't say nothing forever. There is no more. There is nothing left. There is nothing left.
- 1:11:25And I, the blue, she was saying to it.
- 1:11:32Back at the stadium, the pirate parrot is out and he's dancing to just going to a song. It's one of my favorites too by Herbie Mann called Superman.
- 1:11:39And it's a good one. Bottom of the fourth inning about to come your way. Steve Rogers. We're in Mr. Rogers' neighborhood this afternoon.
- 1:11:45He's battling in the Bucks in a scoreless ball game. And bottom of the fourth, it'll be Omar Moreno, Dave Parker, and Willie Starjol.
- 1:11:56I want to send out congratulations to sportscaster John Sanders and producer director George Christensen, the entire staff that put together last night's special on TV2.
- 1:12:09Looking to the pirates in 79, an excellent half hour television production featuring all the pirates, special features of Phil Garner, Willie Starjol, and Dave Parker.
- 1:12:19To John and George, the entire crew put that together, spent a lot of time and put a lot of work in on it. Congratulations. Very well done.
- 1:12:29Omar Moreno leading it off, left handed batter, he takes high ball one. Larry Parrish is up a couple of steps at third.
- 1:12:41Here's the 1-0 pitch. Line to left, face it. So far he's got to play it on one hop. That is it. Number three for the Bucks.
- 1:12:54Lead off single and Moreno went to the opposite side. Took important keys.
- 1:13:00Omar hitting the ball on the ground more and going to the opposite field and he went to the left field there.
- 1:13:06Dave Parker will step in. Dave looks at a called third strike in the first inning.
- 1:13:15Vodchek having a word. Pirate first base coach with base runner Omar Moreno.
- 1:13:27Alright, now Omar is ready. Still time for a moment. First base umpire is Joe Schretz.
- 1:13:34Of the four umpires working today, the one behind the plate, Dave Pallone, is a professional umpire from the minor leagues.
- 1:13:42Pallone, four years in the international league, his contract has been purchased by the national league.
- 1:13:51And that is pretty much what the national league is doing in this opening weekend.
- 1:13:55They've picked up the contracts of some minor league umpires and are using them to supplement local umpires or guys that have had professional experience like Ron Hudson, the second base umpire.
- 1:14:06He worked the Appalachian league a couple of years ago. Throw to first. Omar dives back safely.
- 1:14:11I think Blake Cullen told me they now have four umpires under contract plus Paul Pryor.
- 1:14:15And he indicated that they would, even if and when the other umpires come back, they'd stay in the national league and work the game.
- 1:14:21Runner going.
- 1:14:22Pitch is bowled off up on the screen. Strike one.
- 1:14:29And they have special advisory people from the national league in all of the cities. Blake Cullen is here.
- 1:14:36I thought I saw Tom Gorman downstairs, too. He's the supervisor of this crew, Lanny, and he's here to instruct them and relax them, also to go over the ground rules in great detail.
- 1:14:48He was down in the field doing a lot of that so that they would be ready for the opening assignment.
- 1:14:52Tom Gorman, former national league umpire and quite an apt dinner speaker. Go to first base.
- 1:14:56Also has a new book that's coming out that I'm looking forward to.
- 1:15:00Have you got the title on that yet?
- 1:15:02I have not, and I'm hoping while he's here, maybe we can get him on to talk a little bit about it. He's a funny guy.
- 1:15:07No score. Bottom of the fourth. Throw to first base. Moreno dives back safely.
- 1:15:14Pirates here in the fourth inning, a leadoff single by Omar. Pirates back in the first inning got a leadoff single from Taveras.
- 1:15:20Then Frank swipes second, moved to third on Moreno's front.
- 1:15:25But Rogers was able to punch out Parker at Starja to close down the Pirate first inning.
- 1:15:31Double one pitch. Parker swings, pops it foul, third base side.
- 1:15:34It's going to be out of play.
- 1:15:53Roger's on deck. Parker in a hole, oh, and two. That was the case likewise in the first inning.
- 1:16:01Throw to first base.
- 1:16:05Omar Moreno, he's been in the Pirate organization for a decade now.
- 1:16:08A sign of a 16-year-old and looks like this is the year that he had a chance to really come into his own.
- 1:16:15Likeable young man. Pensive young man.
- 1:16:20Rogers at the belt, throw to first, and they got him.
- 1:16:23Perez makes the tag, 1-3 on the pickoff.
- 1:16:30Kept going that way.
- 1:16:34And Perez makes the tag and Moreno's pick him off. One away, bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:16:48We mentioned Dave Palomar on the plate. Joe Shratch at first, Ron Hupkin at second.
- 1:16:52Joe Mivas is the third base umpires from Dormai, which is up and into Parker, one and two.
- 1:16:57Yeah, quite a spring for Dave, 4-70, 10 home runs.
- 1:17:03Gets safely in all spring games, but two.
- 1:17:06Finishes the spring with a 10-game hitting streak.
- 1:17:08One-two pitch and a drive out of the center field.
- 1:17:11Dawson and Cromarty converging and Cromarty in left center calls it in.
- 1:17:18I mentioned earlier that the wind appears to be blowing straight in or a lot of wind is bringing the ball and holding it up in center field.
- 1:17:24That was the case there with Cromarty able to go over and he was more into center field than he was left center.
- 1:17:31Two away. Here's first base for the Willie Starjil.
- 1:17:37Starjil struck out on the first. Bottom of the fourth.
- 1:17:41No score in the ball game.
- 1:17:47Off speed from Rodgers outside ball one.
- 1:17:57Steve Rodgers delivers. Starjil swings and a broken bat base hit in the right center field.
- 1:18:02Ball inside plays it on one hop and flips it back in.
- 1:18:06Byratt with four. It's Taveras, Lyle Evans, Moreno and now Starjil.
- 1:18:11Willie's on with two down. Last to the fourth. That was one of the trademarks of the Bucks last couple of years.
- 1:18:18Timely two out hitting and a guy who's last three years been a master at two out hitting. Bill Robinson steps in.
- 1:18:24Robbie O for one. Pass to third.
- 1:18:38Here's a stretch by Rodgers that puts the Robinson a ground ball to short.
- 1:18:41Spier flips to second baseman Scott. They force Starjil and the Pirates are retired on the fourth inning.
- 1:18:47Two runs, two hits, one left. Back to four and into play opening day 1979. The Pirates nothing and Montreal nothing.

- 1:19:54For the opener everybody decked out in new uniforms. The grounds crew has new jackets, new pants.
- 1:20:02Members of the pirate staff have some new caps that they're wearing. Good to see Lou Butchey again.
- 1:20:07Good friend who runs the press elevator.
- 1:20:11American League afternoon games. Texas at Detroit canceled due to inclement weather.
- 1:20:16And the White Sox are at Baltimore to be Ken Krevec against 20 game winner Jim Palmer.
- 1:20:22Take that would you? Thank you.
- 1:20:26Top of the fifth inning. No score in the ballgame. It'll be Gary Carter.
- 1:20:31Carter flat out and Moreno made an outstanding, typical antelope running catch.
- 1:20:41Exposed to have one hit off Blylevin. Pirates have gotten four hits off Rodgers.
- 1:20:58Blylevin's first pitch to Carter inside ball one.
- 1:21:02Tonight at the American League, Minnesota is at Oakland. Probable pitcher is Dave Goltz against Rick Langford.
- 1:21:07California at Seattle, Nolan Ryan against McLaughlin.
- 1:21:12Here's the 1-0 pitch. Just inside 2-0.
- 1:21:16Good to see Duffy Dyer, former pirate catcher now with his Montreal club.
- 1:21:20Duffy's had a back injury this spring. He says he feels healthy and he looks good.
- 1:21:24Duffy with a brand new three-year contract as a pre-agent with the Expos.
- 1:21:28There's a strike, 2-1, and Dyer will back up Gary Carter.
- 1:21:32And then the third catcher for this Montreal club will be Kenny Macca, young man who was drafted in the...
- 1:21:39finally drafted by the Expos. And Macca had an outstanding spring. Hit.357 for the Expos.
- 1:21:46Carter swings and a drive to left. Well hit. Bill Robinson going back and it is a home run.
- 1:21:51Gary Carter jumping on a 2-1 pitch from Bert Blylevin.
- 1:21:55And Montreal has scored the first run of the year. The Expos take a 1-0 lead.
- 1:22:10Carter, a year ago, 20 home runs, 72 runs batted in.
- 1:22:15And has the first home run of the year for Montreal.
- 1:22:19Nobody out, nobody out. Top of the fifth.
- 1:22:23Here's third baseman Larry Parrish. Parrish with a base hit in the third.
- 1:22:30Totally other Montreal hit. He takes a strike in the inside corner.
- 1:22:390-1 pitch. Swung on and a drive down the left-handed line, but it's going to curve foul.
- 1:22:44Into the seats up over the pirate bullpen, no ball, two strikes.
- 1:22:48Well, the world champion, Pittsburgh Steelers, will be saluted tomorrow afternoon here at the stadium.
- 1:22:53Art Rooney will be honored before the game and will throw out the first pitch.
- 1:22:57Also, some of the Steelers will participate in a home run hitting contest prior to the game.
- 1:23:01And that's not all. The Pirates' new secret weapon will be unveiled tomorrow.
- 1:23:05And the first 5,000 fans attending the game will get one free.
- 1:23:09Here's the 0-2 pitch. Check swing. Check the first base on fire, but he didn't go. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:23:16So if you love the Pittsburgh Steelers and like to honor them for their great season, plus see a great baseball game,
- 1:23:22the spot tomorrow is here at Three Rivers. Tomorrow afternoon for the Super Saturday salute for the Pittsburgh Steelers, game time 2.15.
- 1:23:28Gates will open tomorrow at 12.45.
- 1:23:32Pitch inside to Parrish. Two ball, two strikes.
- 1:23:38Glylevin delivers, and it's outside. So, birch up down in front, 0-2, and now it's a full count.
- 1:23:45Montreal 1, Pirates nothing. Top of the fifth inning.
- 1:23:50Payoff pitch. Foul off to the right.
- 1:24:04Today the U.S. Marines Corps, Gummin Bugle Corps was on hand. All serve as color guard.
- 1:24:123-2 pitch, and slight foul down into the Montreal bullpen.
- 1:24:18Once again, the bullpens are in the opposite corners. Montreal bullpen down the right field line, and the Pirate bullpen down the left field line.
- 1:24:32The Newcastle Red Hurricane Marching Band is going to perform tomorrow here at the stadium.
- 1:24:373-2 pitch, swung on, and top step foul down the right field line, back out of play.
- 1:24:43So, Parrish hanging tough on a couple of 3-2 pitchers from Birch Glylevin.
- 1:25:04Ready again, the 3-2 pitch. Swung on, and popped behind the Pirate dugout.
- 1:25:09Glylevin got the ball up and in, and Parrish was able to battle it off.
- 1:25:25Glylevin celebrating his 28th birthday today, facing the Montreal Expos on the opener. Don Robinson will pitch for the Pirates tomorrow against Ross Grimsley of the Montreal Expos.
- 1:25:35Here's the 3-2 pitch. A base hit. Skimmer into right field. Parrish is 2 for 2.
- 1:25:45Runner on, nobody out on the fifth inning. Montreal leading 1-0.
- 1:25:49Here's shortstop Chris Spire with Steve Rogers, their pitcher on deck.
- 1:26:03And I have to have a word with Birch Glylevin.
- 1:26:06I mentioned earlier that Birch felt one of the problems of the year ago that he had a tendency to rush things a bit late in ball games.
- 1:26:14And over the winter months, Birch talked with a visual dynamics expert, the principle being that you should visualize a pitch before you actually throw it.
- 1:26:30And here's the stretch. Runner going. Pitcher swung on and fouled off. Strike one.
- 1:26:34Manny Sangean just headed down toward the bullpen with our new bullpen member, Enrique Romo, with him.
- 1:26:39So with two straight hits here, one of them being a homer, Chuck Tanner and Harvey Haddix probably feel that maybe they need to get somebody heated up down there.
- 1:26:48As Milo mentioned earlier, they like the day to get loose. Birch was coasting along pretty good.
- 1:26:54First four innings, had given up only one hit, had walked a couple of batters.
- 1:26:59Glylevin of course a good control pitcher. One strike, pitch, ground ball, right side. Stennett has it.
- 1:27:03Turning, throwing to Glylevin, covering and they got a good play.
- 1:27:08As Targile and Stennett converse on the ball, Stennett had to make the play and Glylevin had to cover first.
- 1:27:14Well, we've had some good defensive plays and that one 4 to 1, they out at first base. On the ground ball, Parrish moves down a second.
- 1:27:21Boy, Renny really covered some ground there, didn't he?
- 1:27:24Very impressive and of course going far to his left to make the club stop and then having to turn quickly and throw partially off balance to a moving target, Glylevin in this case.
- 1:27:35Here's Steve Rogers, what's a big out right there.
- 1:27:39Runner at second.
- 1:27:43Breaking pitch outside, ball one, Montreal one, Pirates nothing, top of the fifth. A lead off home run by Gary Carter.
- 1:27:52And indeed, Romo is warming up in the pirate bullpen.
- 1:27:551-0 pitch, line shot, throw by Stennett, holds it down, 2-way.
- 1:28:05Slicing line drive right side of the infield, Stennett jumping up and pulling down the rebound to close out Rogers and 2-way.
- 1:28:14So Stennett has turned in back to back defensive gems here in the fifth.
- 1:28:19So the cold weather that you worry about him especially, probably more than anybody on the club, he's responded with two gems here in a row.
- 1:28:27Well, the right ankle of course fractured near the end August of 77 and then in spring training this year, twisted that left ankle.
- 1:28:39But he got the good spring and was able to make the play. Here's the top of the batting order, Andre Dawson who's 0 for 2 has bounced out twice and takes high ball one.
- 1:28:47Those two defensive plays right there could be a catalyst.
- 1:28:50Close out Montreal here in the fifth and maybe open up the bucks offensively in the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:28:55It's 1-0 Montreal, 1-0 pitch, ground ball, base hit left field, Robinson charging, rounding third is Parrish.
- 1:29:03Here's the throw to the plate, it's not in time and the runner moves down to second base.
- 1:29:07I had to go out and get the ball so on the throw Dawson will get credit for an RBI single go to second on the throw, it's now 2-0 Montreal.
- 1:29:22Dawson and Parrish swapping positions, now it's Dawson down at second base, Expos have four hits, three of the four here in the fifth inning.
- 1:29:32Here's second baseman Rodney Scott, walked in the first inning and bounced to short on the fourth.
- 1:29:41Left handed batter deep in the batter's box.
- 1:29:47Flings and pops at foul, Scott played a little bit at third base for the Cubs last year.
- 1:29:52Steve Atzavares you'll recall a year ago was out some time with injury.
- 1:30:03Today's meeting between the Pirates and the Expos, it's the second time that these clubs have met in an opening day.
- 1:30:08The other was back on April 10th, 1974, the Genside 1-1.
- 1:30:13The Expos won that game 12-8 in 13 innings.
- 1:30:17A little home run by Carter, two out RBI single by Dawson driving in Parrish giving Montreal a 2-0 lead.
- 1:30:29Now it's Cole, the wind whipping around and kicking up some of the dirt around the home plate area.
- 1:30:48Wile Evans that checks the runner, three-two pitch is fouled off.
- 1:30:57The Philly Fanatic here today to welcome the Pirate Parrots to the National League.
- 1:31:03The Bucks will be in Philadelphia, two games set with the Phillies, Monday night and Wednesday night.
- 1:31:08John Candelaria is scheduled to go against Dick Ruthven in a Monday game and it looked like Burt Wile Evans would go against Steve Carlton in a Wednesday game.
- 1:31:17Three-two pitch, line to Gardner, he knocked it down, throws to Stargell and Scott is out.
- 1:31:25Montreal in the second gets two runs on three hits, still a home run by Carter, one left on after four and a half.
- 1:31:32It's Montreal two and our Pirates nothing.
- 1:31:37It's natural to want the best to reach for the best thing.
- 1:31:41To find the trappings, need the wrappings, it's a natural thing.
- 1:31:46It's imitation for you, we've got something for you.
- 1:31:50Know you're gonna like it, it's the natural thing.
- 1:31:55Come on, come on get daily, come on, come on get natural, come up to the natural thing.
- 1:32:03Compare prices on fruit juice products, you may be spending more money for less quality.
- 1:32:08Daily Juice asks you to compare prices.
- 1:32:10Daily Juice products have a bonus of vitamin C plus the pump, the natural fiber of the fruit.
- 1:32:15Compare prices, you'll buy daily and get all the goodness for less.
- 1:32:20Come on, come on get daily, come on, come on get natural, come up to the natural thing.
- 1:32:31Bottom of the fifth inning, Steve Rogers for Montreal, now it's time to mount with a two nothing lead.
- 1:32:49Rennie Shennett will be leading off the last half of the fifth inning.
- 1:32:53That's a 1971, the Pirates are five and three in opening day game.
- 1:33:05This is the sixth time the Pirates have begun the season at Three Rivers.
- 1:33:11Last year the Bucks opened up, knocked out Chicago.
- 1:33:22The Pirates starting at home in quite a few of our April games here at Three Rivers Stadium.
- 1:33:26A good chance to indeed get off to a good start in 1979.
- 1:33:30The Pirate Club has played so very well at Three Rivers in 78.
- 1:33:34First that big long home winning streak near the end of the season kept us in the chase.
- 1:33:39Here's the pitch to Shennett, it's a strike on the outside corner.
- 1:33:42Rennie, rounded to short, his first time up, back on the second.
- 1:33:46Two nothing Montreal.
- 1:33:50Here's the 0-1 pitch and foul on a play.
- 1:33:56Pirates played 10 of their first 12 games at home.
- 1:34:04After the two games in Philadelphia, Monday and Wednesday of next week, come home for a week long set.
- 1:34:09Four against the Cardinals, three against the Phillies.
- 1:34:120-2 pitch, Shennett.
- 1:34:16Swings and misses, Carter with tag Shennett, and that is strikeout number four for Steve Rogers.
- 1:34:23Rogers a good control pitcher, he's not a walk to pirate batter.
- 1:34:27Two nothing Montreal leads, last half of the fifth.
- 1:34:31Here's the young man from Muncie, Pennsylvania, Ed Ott.
- 1:34:340-1, left handed batter.
- 1:34:51Well we want to take a moment to welcome a good friend of the KDK radio family.
- 1:34:57Former pirate pitcher Steve Blass will be hosting a telephone talk show following all pirate home games on Saturdays.
- 1:35:05And it will start this Saturday, Steve's for his show.
- 1:35:08This day at out is fouled back, it's on our flagship station, KDK, Steve Blass, former pirate pitcher.
- 1:35:13Steve was down with our Charleston ball club in 1974 and I was the broadcaster with the Charlies.
- 1:35:18Steve used to come up in the booth and do a little broadcasting there.
- 1:35:23We hope that you'll make plans to join Steve for his first show on Saturday following our ball game, that's tomorrow.
- 1:35:31Here's the 0-1 pitch from Rogers.
- 1:35:33Swung on to drive in the right center field, Valentine and Johnson over and back that ball and...
- 1:35:37...Johan! Over on, Ed Ott!
- 1:35:47Fireworks to the skies on opening day.
- 1:35:52Ed Ott jumping on an 0-1 pitch.
- 1:35:56First home run of 1979 for the Pirates, it's now 2-1 ball game. Montreal's lead is cut to one.
- 1:36:07And it'll bring up Bill Gardner.
- 1:36:09Right center field.
- 1:36:12Ball carried well, the Otter.
- 1:36:15Bring us back to within one. So the two catchers here this afternoon have been home runs.
- 1:36:18Gardner swings, drive in the right field, Valentine going back, warning track and reaches up, makes the catch.
- 1:36:24Two away.
- 1:36:27Slicing drive, Valentine had to go back and he made the grab.
- 1:36:32Montreal leading 2-1.
- 1:36:36Carter Holmert from Montreal with nobody out on the top of the fifth.
- 1:36:38Ed Ott, the Pirate catcher, is Holmert here in the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:36:42And throughout our broadcast in 1979, Pirate fans will be receiving tickets with every Pirate home run.
- 1:36:50Here's Blyleven, he takes the strike.
- 1:36:53You'll be hearing details throughout the broadcast throughout the 1979 season on how you can send in your postcard and possibly win tickets and maybe a colored TV set.
- 1:37:03Here's the 0-1 pitch, strike on the inside corner.
- 1:37:06So our first winner of the year for Ed Ott's home run is Donna Daugherty of Parker, Pennsylvania.
- 1:37:12Congratulations, Donna. You've won a pair of tickets to a future Pirate home game.
- 1:37:170-2 pitch, down low 1-2.
- 1:37:25Donna Daugherty of Parker, Pennsylvania.
- 1:37:28Our first winner in our home run contest, every Pirate home run is worth a couple of tickets to a Pirate fan.
- 1:37:35Blyleven looks at a called third strike.
- 1:37:38Five strikeouts for Rodgers in five innings, the Bucks in the fifth get a run on a hip, the home run by Ed Ott.
- 1:37:45Nobody left on after five, it's Montreal 2 and our Buccos 1.
- 1:37:50From the Wheatfields out of Kansas to the cities by the bay, along the Mississippi all across the USA, across the land and across the bar, more people like today, this is America, the new Chevrolet.
- 1:38:08The new Chevrolet, the new generation car bought and embraced by more than a million people in the first two years.
- 1:38:13This year, drive the car, America has driven to the top, the new Chevrolet, the priest and impala for 1979.
- 1:38:20From the district north of Phoenix to the freeway's Isle Lane, from the seaforth to the wind up in the bay, down the USA.
- 1:38:29From the Buccos, new Ford car, more people like today, I'm getting a lot of weird calls, new Chevrolet, the N-Drive, more people like today, they live in America.
- 1:38:44New Chevrolet, they live in America.
- 1:38:49Now we're getting set for chapter number six on opening day 1979. By the way, this Home Run contest that we're talking about is not just for listeners of our flagship station, but rather it's for listeners up and down the entire pirate network.
- 1:39:06They're listening to your local stations, they'll be telling you where to send your postcards when you get in on the Home Run contest.
- 1:39:12Before we have the play-by-play story of the sixth inning, we'll step out and pause for station identification. This is the Pirates Baseball Network.
- 1:39:20This is Roy Fox inviting you to join me in the Fox's Den. Tonight, right here, 6 o'clock, 3-3-3-9-3-9-3 on KDKA Pittsburgh.
- 1:39:31With Milo Hamilton, this is Lanny Frateri, top of the sixth inning, Montreal leading 2-1 against Birdfly, 11 of the Pirates. Warren Cromartie will lead off.
- 1:39:43Cromartie is 0-2, has bounced into a double play and flies to Moreno and right center. He's their number three hitter in the batting order.
- 1:39:50That's side ball one. Dick Williams Ball Club has three players that were on the 78 Pirates in spring training of a year ago. Here's the 1-0 Bricks.
- 1:40:01That's up the middle, shortstop Taveras. Hoppy on the second base, back throwing, but not in time to get the speedy Cromartie.
- 1:40:08Ball took an unusual hop out by seconds. The ball seemed to catch Taveras in the palm of the glove. Frankie had to hesitate a moment.
- 1:40:16And it's been scored as an infield single. Cromartie is on, leading off the sixth. Five hits from Montreal. Brings up their cleanup batter, Al is Valentine.
- 1:40:28Correction, make it an eight-six. Valentine fly to center and walks. Fly 11 of the first five-plus innings, two strikeouts, two walks.
- 1:40:43Runner leads away, the pitcher swung on and popped foul down the first base side.
- 1:40:59Talking about people who wore the pirate uniform, 78 W. Dyer, Kenny Maka, of course, and Elias Sosa with our club in spring training a year ago.
- 1:41:12Here's the one-strike pitch, and it's down low, one and one.
- 1:41:30Montreal 2, Pirates 1, top of the sixth inning. One-one pitch.
- 1:41:35There's a fly ball in the right field. Parker fell down. The ball is well hit. It's caught by Parker. No! Billy dropped it.
- 1:41:42Looks like he had it for a moment. Now they've got Valentine between first and second. Dennis throw to Stardell. They got him on a run down.
- 1:41:48Stardell chasing Valentine towards second. Taveras will make the tag.
- 1:41:54Oh, a crazy mixed-up play, but we came out of it pretty good.
- 1:41:58Parker fell down as he initially broke for the ball, but he was able to get up in time and get to where the ball came down on a warning track.
- 1:42:07Then he got the glove on it, bobbled the ball, it fell to the track. Valentine, without looking, went around first base and then realized that Carl Marty, who was a bit confused, stopped at second.
- 1:42:18So it is an error charged on Parker allowing Valentine to reach first.
- 1:42:26And then what was it, 9-4-3-6? 9-4-3-6 was the put-out.
- 1:42:32Alright, the batter now, Tony Perez. That's side ball one.
- 1:42:37Oh, it's funny, Dave was down, then he was up, he was alright, then he dropped it, then he got it back in, then we got the ad.
- 1:42:43Ball's well that ends well. The only thing the Expos got out of it is Carl Marty got a base.
- 1:42:492-1 Montrealese, top of the sixth. Fly-11 set to 1-0 pitch and foul back.
- 1:43:09Perez, their number five hitter, Gary Carter is on deck.
- 1:43:19And on Sunday afternoon, third game of the set, a 1-0-5 encounter with Montreal.
- 1:43:39Fly-11 set, check of the runner, 1-1 pitch, ground ball foul outside of third. Between the bag and the coaching box, one and two.
- 1:44:06Warren Crowe Marty at second base with one away.
- 1:44:11Fly-11 double look back at the runner, one-two pitch, one out of ground ball, backhanded by Garner at the line, good stop, strong throw, got him.
- 1:44:19Oh, and above average Major League player right there, and a sharply hit ball down the third base line.
- 1:44:24Garner making the backhanded stop right at the line and the long throw.
- 1:44:29They're two away. Well, that was not an easy chance either because the position of his hands landing, by the time he got the ball, he really had to get rid of it in a hurry.
- 1:44:38And had to have something on it besides and he handled it so well. It just looked like it turned his hands inside out a little bit and then to recover and make that good throw.
- 1:44:46That's a big play because if it goes by, a run is in and a double for Perez. Yes, indeed. Gary Carter steps in, takes a strike.
- 1:44:53Carter grabbed of an extra base hit on a good running grab by Moreno in the second and Carter homered in the fifth.
- 1:45:00Montreal leading two to one.
- 1:45:03Ed Ott has homered for the Pirates. We're in the top of the sixth. Crowe Marty at second, two down, one strike pitch, ground, no, foul ball, caught Carter in the batter's box.
- 1:45:13And he's walking it off. Took quite a shot off of a putt. No ball, two strikes.
- 1:45:33Pirates defensively, Garner at third. Severus to shortstop, Renny Stenitz at second, Willie Stardew at first. Stardew playing a couple of extra steps off the line. Stenitz shooting towards the second base bag.
- 1:45:43They're playing Carter around towards left with Bill Robinson in left field. Moreno towards the gap in left center. And Dave Parker playing over into the power alley in right center.
- 1:46:01Here's the stretch by Burke, the O2 pitch. Breaking ball down low. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:46:13Exposed their four hits and they pick up their two runs on the fifth inning. Carter's solo homerun and then Dawson a two-out single driving in Larry Parrish.
- 1:46:23Pirate run, bottom of the fifth on Ed Otts. First homerun of the year.
- 1:46:38While Evan said one, two, pitch struck him out. Breaking pitch down and away. Third strike out for Burke. And that's all Montreal. No runs, no hits, two errors, one left after five and a half. It's the Exposed 2 and the Pirates 1.
- 1:46:53Swings and drives one to left. Way back. Going, going and gone. A long homerun by Robbie.
- 1:47:01There's nothing else in baseball like one of those round trippers and this year there's more power than ever in those bucko bats. Now you can cash in on pirate power at the plate.

- 1:47:53Well, in honor of Blylemon's 28th birthday and the rebirth of a new baseball season from the Beatles' great white album, So You Say It's Your Birthday.
- 1:48:03Blylemon says it's my birthday too. We're going to have a good time. Two to one, bottom of the sixth inning, Montreal leads.
- 1:48:10Action coming your way from Three Rivers Stadium. Curtain has gone up. Now the 1979 season.
- 1:48:31Steve Rogers will face the top of the Pittsburgh batting order.
- 1:48:40Head on is the homer this afternoon. He now has 17 major league home runs. It's his first major league home run off Steve Rogers.
- 1:48:55Frank Taveras will lead off the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:49:04Frank is one for two, had a base hit, swiped a base in the first inning and a foul tip strike one. Davis Palone, the home plate umpire slaps the hand indicating the foul ball.
- 1:49:19Taveras, Moreno and Parker, first three in the pirate batting order here in the sixth. Taveras swings again the foul tip and it's 0-2.
- 1:49:38Rogers ready the 0-2 pitch. Taveras swings and a foul ball.
- 1:49:49Following the broadcast this afternoon we'll have our first game pirates will check the scoreboard, look at the other games. There are two in the American league scheduled. Only one going to be played this afternoon.
- 1:49:57Check the games from tonight.
- 1:50:00And of course recap.
- 1:50:02The action of this opening day for you.
- 1:50:04And tomorrow we're on the air at two o'clock with the game two of the season.
- 1:50:090-2 pitch, ground ball to the right side. Taveras is two for three.
- 1:50:16The pirates have gotten lead off singles down in three of the first six innings.
- 1:50:24And it'll bring up Omar Moreno. Bucks are down around, we'll see if Chuck has Omar button him over.
- 1:50:30That panel is going to come out and have a word with Omar. Not unusual to see Chuck have this kind of conversation with a hitter for no other reason than to get the other team wondering.
- 1:50:44Omar one for two, had a base hit to left field in the fourth inning. Taveras is up to third.
- 1:50:51Third stop is by our second baseman Scott are a bit closer than double play depth and they would have to be with Omar in the batter's box. Taveras at first.
- 1:51:01Taveras when he ran on Rodgers the first and he went on the first pitch, not going. Moreno shows butt takes high ball on.
- 1:51:09So this head to head confrontation between Rodgers and Moreno.
- 1:51:14Sidebar and that's Taveras at first base. Montreal bullpen is working.
- 1:51:21Right hander and left hander.
- 1:51:25Go to first base. That would be my question about this Montreal club.
- 1:51:31Left hander Woody Freiman. Right hander, flag at Delia Sosa.
- 1:51:402-1 Montreal leads last with a sixth. Ball is about at third base side. Taveras will have to go to first base.
- 1:51:46Second baseman Scott covering the sacrifice five to four.
- 1:51:53Pirates trying to manufacture a run here in the bottom of the sixth inning and tie the ball game up.
- 1:52:05Here's their Parker. Nothing any note for two has stuck out and fly it out.
- 1:52:20Montreal got two in the top of the fifth. They had odd homered with nobody out in the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:52:24They're failing by a run but now they've got that tying run at second base.
- 1:52:39Two time National League batting champion. Last year's most valuable player Dave Parker.
- 1:52:44Facing Steve Rodgers. Lefty against righty. Parker takes a lead up high ball on.
- 1:52:51Like to throw Parker's stuff down and in. And if possible run the fastball away.
- 1:52:58And they like to change speeds on them. A couple of years ago, they lost speed stuff.
- 1:53:03Dave gave Dave some problems but he learned to adjust to that.
- 1:53:06Plus the inside pitch very well the last couple of years.
- 1:53:09For batting championships. 1-0 pitch swung out and fouled off to the left 1-1.
- 1:53:34So a laid off single is now at second base after Moreno sacrificed Bunt.
- 1:53:41Turning and throwing to second base. Fire cutting in behind Daveris. Frank got back in time.
- 1:53:51Parker batting in the number three spot. This year's Stardale hitting fourth.
- 1:53:54You recall a year ago Chuck Tanner had Bill Robinson fourth and Stardale fifth.
- 1:53:59But then during that 78 campaign flip-flopped him back the other way.
- 1:54:08Here's the stretch. 1-1 pitch fouled back. 1-2.
- 1:54:21Dave Parker likes to say he's just a big old country boy.
- 1:54:30Knee injury changed Dave's life around. Might have been a football player with a knee injury in his senior year in high school in Cincinnati.
- 1:54:37Went to baseball and as he said it might have been a blessing in disguise. 1-2 pitch. Parker strikes out.
- 1:54:42Rogers ran that fastball away. Six strikeouts. 2 away. Here's Stardale.
- 1:54:51Stardale 1 for 2 had a base hit in the fourth inning. Daveris down to second.
- 1:55:06Montreal leading by a run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:55:19Rogers shut the pitch. Stardale swung on and popped up left field. Third base side foul territory. Parish and Spire over. Parish makes the catch in foul territory.
- 1:55:30Here it's in the sixth. No runs. One hit. One man left on after six innings of play. It's Montreal 2 and Abucco is 1.
- 1:55:38Updating the news, the U.S. economy continues to show strength as the latest national unemployment rate comes in at 5.7 percent for the month of March, the same as February.
- 1:55:47An economic slowdown is reflected in rising unemployment. Federal mediators are sitting in with representatives of the Teamsters Union and the trucking industry holding contract talks in Washington.
- 1:55:56The two sides are reportedly still about 25 cents an hour apart on wages.
- 1:56:00The head of the Pennsylvania Service Station operator says President Carter's action in decontrolling domestic oil prices plays into the hands of oil companies.
- 1:56:08Pittsburgh Postal officials are probing reports one or more postal employees at the main post office on Grant Street may have stolen an unknown amount of cash from letters addressed to charities.
- 1:56:18The weather outlook very windy cold the rest of the day. Some snow flurries tonight, diminishing winds, temperatures dropping down to 22. Sunny and warmer tomorrow, looking for a high of 45.
- 1:56:28More news following pirate baseball. John Hadar, KDKA News.
- 1:56:33Well after six innings of play, the Expos two runs on four hits. Jerry Carter a homerun for Montreal. Pirates one run on six hits. Pirate catcher Ed Ott with a solo homerun on the fifth inning.
- 1:56:50Still we're set for the seventh and Milo back in to tell you about it.
- 1:56:53We're ready to go and it's a tight ballgame here now. The Bucks have seen a couple of chances go by the board in the first inning and again in the sixth. As a result, the Expos maintain the two to one advantage.
- 1:57:06Larry Parrish leading it off. He's two for two at a single in the third and another single in the fifth. He scored their second run.
- 1:57:12Bert Blylevin and Steve Rogers starting right handers both still on the action. Here's the pitch to Parrish. Hit him on the fifth but he's still strong enough to get it out the center field. That's where Moreno will make the play.
- 1:57:24So they get Parrish for the first time today after collecting two for two.
- 1:57:28But their shortstop Chris Meyer reached on a fielder's choice in the third inning. In the fifth, Renny Stenet robbed him of a hit going way toward the right field foul line, trolling off balance against the grain to Blylevin who covered it was a tremendous play.
- 1:57:43And now he'll step in here over two.
- 1:57:49Pitcher Rogers will be next.
- 1:57:52They've been bright sunshine here today and if you're in that sun it makes it feel a little better. Good crowd on hand considering the fact that when the folks got up this morning it was a bit nippy in Pittsburgh.
- 1:58:04These folks here today are baseball fans deluxe.
- 1:58:10Bundled up and watching their buckos.
- 1:58:12Two to one Montreal seventh inning.
- 1:58:15Chris Meyer waiting for Blylevin. The Dutchman brings it.
- 1:58:18Look out almost nipped him in the shoulder and it's ball one.
- 1:58:22Tomorrow Don Robinson last year's right hand sporting news rookie of the year pitcher will go against the Expos. Bruce Keeson gets the night on Sunday.
- 1:58:30Fouled off way down the right side. One ball and one strike.
- 1:58:37A lot crammed into an opening weekend not only the ball games but all the promotions along with it.
- 1:58:43Buck Brass in the front office trying to make it fun for you to be here. Fly ball right center.
- 1:58:48It's slicing away from Moreno. Parker will make the play in right center.
- 1:58:52And it's two down.
- 1:58:55That ball really had a banana in the end of it.
- 1:58:59So Parker over to make the catch on the slicing fly ball to right center and brings up their pitcher Rogers.
- 1:59:04In the third inning he struck out and then in the 50 a sizzling line drive that was taking off and Stunnett reached high and made his second great play in a row to take a hit away from Rogers.
- 1:59:19Nobody on two down. Blylevin's pitch got it by him. He tried to pull the bat back and it hit it for a foul strike.
- 1:59:31If he had won the Rogers leadoff batter and center fielder Dawson would be next. Here's the pitch.
- 1:59:36Stee-Ryke on the inside corner. Really rode it in on that inside corner with good velocity.
- 1:59:41Jumps out in front of his mound opponent with two strikes.
- 1:59:45Here's the pitch. Stayed high with a breaking ball and it's one and two.
- 1:59:52Montreal Expos under their manager Dick Williams and they are confident that this is going to be their best year ever.
- 1:59:58Here's the one two pitch. Swing and a foul out to the right holding it one and two.
- 2:00:04And the back of our broadcasting booth certainly filled with a radio and TV side that sponsors the folks who make it all possible.
- 2:00:11For you to hear the game. Ever grateful we are. Here's the pitch. Off speed up high. Two and two.
- 2:00:23Two two with two out and nobody on. Blylevin has the sign from the otter. Two two pitch.
- 2:00:29Swinging foul way upstairs on the right side. Almost gets into our club level.
- 2:00:39General manager Pete Peterson with his family and guests over in the general manager's box.
- 2:00:45New vice president in charge of promotion, publicity and sales Jack Shrum with a group in.
- 2:00:51There's a bouncer through the right side of base hit. Had him two strikes and let him get off the hook.
- 2:00:59Stargell tried to go to his right to flag it off but it was by him and into right field and Parker quickly got over near the line to hold him to a single.
- 2:01:06That is hit number five off Blylevin and the bat boy goes down with a warm up jacket for Rogers and that'll bring up their center fielder and lead off batter Andre Dawson.
- 2:01:16Who bounced out in the first inning to Stargell. Third inning Garner threw him out. Then in the fifth inning he got a big two out here at a single to draw in Parrish.
- 2:01:24And that's the run that has them in front right now. They got a homer out of Carter to start that fifth inning.
- 2:01:30The Bucks only run came on an Ed Ott home run that was in the bottom of the fifth. All the scoring took place in the fifth inning on both sides.
- 2:01:38Two runs five hits Expos. Pirates one run six hits. Stretching and delivering to Dawson. Hit him on the fifth. Popped him foul out of play. Back here to the left side.
- 2:01:48Follow interestingly enough Andre Dawson is the sixth different lead off batter the Expos have had in the last six years.
- 2:01:53Seventy four Ron Hunt. Seventy five Tony Scott. Seventy six Pepe Manuel. Seventy seven Dave Cash. Last year they started with Ellis Valentine and today it's Dawson.
- 2:02:03So the revolving chairs in that lead off spot as they've tried to build their expansion team into a contender and they've done it now.
- 2:02:12The stretch pitched it off and swings and sends a high pop right side. Stargell moving over. Will it come back for him? It does. He's there and he has it.
- 2:02:20Right down in front of the box seat railing. He had to stay with it. It was very high. Got up into that win but Captain Willie the old veteran made the play.
- 2:02:27No runs in one hit. No errors and the pitcher Rogers who had the base hit was left on. So now it's seventh inning stretch time. How about it?
- 2:02:35Everybody getting up here at the ballpark. You get up at home. Let's stretch some hits and some runs out of these buck-o-bats.
- 2:02:41Need to go get them bucked. In the middle of the seventh Expos two Pirates one.
- 2:02:47You know it takes a team effort to be a winner. The Pirates know that and so does Zena. That's why Zena's new 3 System is such a winner.
- 2:02:57A total breakthrough in color TV technology. It includes System 3's new trifocus picture tube with its unique EFL electron gun that uses three focusing actions instead of one.
- 2:03:09And Zena's fantastic new triple plus chassis that's specially designed to run cooler and have fewer interconnections where trouble can start.
- 2:03:17Plus a hundred percent modular design. A grouping of eight separate modules that means that your set may never have to leave your house for service.
- 2:03:26Because every part is on a home replacement module. And it's all teamed with Zena's famous automatic color sentry.
- 2:03:32What a team. Z System 3, the best performing, most reliable color TV in Zena's history at your nearby Zena's dealer today.
- 2:03:41Zena, the quality goes in before the name goes on.
- 2:03:48At the crowd on an opening day at Three Rivers still standing for their seventh inning stretch.
- 2:03:53Trying to get their buckos going. The song you hear in the background I'm sure is recognizable and familiar to you.
- 2:03:59It's the Steelers song reminding the fans as the message board does that tomorrow is our salute to the world champion Steelers.
- 2:04:06Ceremonies before the game. Also some fun with the Steelers and the Bucks having a hitting contest.
- 2:04:13So more fun at Three Rivers for you tomorrow. Now the crowd settling down. The Bucks need a run to get back. They need two to go in front.
- 2:04:21Pirates have not led in this game. And it'll be Bill Robinson running stunning and at-op as we go to the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 2:04:28Robinson has bounced the third and he's hit into a force play to the short stuff.
- 2:04:35Robinson had started out now working on the batting glove a little bit. He's got that pine-tire rag that's got all that stuff on it.
- 2:04:44Makes your hand stick to the bat. Today you might have trouble getting the bat out of your hand. Boy it is nippy for those hitters today.
- 2:04:53Grabbing onto that bat handle. When a runner runs that ball in on your fist, boy, it really stings in this kind of an afternoon.
- 2:05:02Hot dog wrappers by the thousands flying around here. Wind whirling at Three Rivers. Two home runs, one by Carter, one by Ott.
- 2:05:11Expos lead two to one. Pitch upstairs from Rogers. One ball and no strike.
- 2:05:17Good to see Duffy Dyer and Kenny Maka. They are now members of the Expos of course, but top-notch guys.
- 2:05:24There's a ball and it is 2-0. Kenny of course from Pittsburgh and Duffy Dyer's family was coming in from Arizona to see the series.
- 2:05:34And then I guess go home to Montreal for the season with the Duff. Two balls and no strikes.
- 2:05:39Rogers behind Robbie. Here's the pitch. Strike call right down the middle and it's 2-1.
- 2:05:46Renny Stenit on deck to the right. Taveras has had two of the six pirate hits.
- 2:05:51Moreno one, Stardew one, Ott one, that was the homer, and Blylevin one. The pitch.
- 2:05:56Swing and a miss and a slider. Two balls and two strikes.
- 2:06:012-2 as Robinson leads it off trying to get something going in the pirate seventh.
- 2:06:06Expos leading by a run. Bucks about hit him. Bucks have made two errors but did not figure in the two-run inning for Montreal.
- 2:06:14Bouncer foul off to the third side. Skips into the front box and the youngster holds it up proudly and well he should.
- 2:06:21He earned it. Two balls and two strikes.
- 2:06:26Broadcast time tomorrow will be two o'clock with the warm-up man. Swing and a miss and he struck him out.
- 2:06:34That is strikeout number seven for Rogers. He brought that K-Jab with him today. He struck out seven.
- 2:06:43That will bring up second baseman Renny Stenit. Bounced a short in the second inning. Fifth inning he struck out swinging.
- 2:06:53Renny Stenit looking for his first hit of the young season. This is the opener for both clubs.
- 2:06:59And Rogers delivering to Renny and it is inside corner at the letters. Renny had backed away.
- 2:07:04Thought it was a ball. Umpire threw up the right hand. Renny not particularly happy with the call.
- 2:07:11The crowd starting to chant here of let's go Bucks. Fouled up to the right side. Going to make the upper deck.
- 2:07:19So Rogers quickly out in front of Renny. Renny by the way has made two excellent plays in this game at second base.
- 2:07:26Omar Moreno made a fabulous running catch in the second inning on Kiter in deep right center.
- 2:07:33Now look at this. Boy oh boy. I'll tell you one thing we know the concession people are doing a business.
- 2:07:41Look at the empty Raptors on the field. And they're blowing them all in toward the dugouts down here behind home plate.
- 2:07:48Here's the O2 pitch. High inside one and two.
- 2:07:58One out and nobody on. Robinson started the inning by striking out.
- 2:08:04Now the one two pitch from Rogers to Stenett. Swinging. Pops it right side. It's going to hold up for Valentine.
- 2:08:10He'll come in about eight or ten steps. Make the play and it's two down.
- 2:08:15Two away and the Pirate 7 brings up that out. Who will get a welcome here? He hit the home run the last time up.
- 2:08:21Ed Odd with his one for two. The pop up in the second got him. But in the fifth he hit one over the right center field fence.
- 2:08:35Ed Odd with his one for two. The pop up in the second got him. But in the fifth he hit one over the right center field fence.
- 2:08:44That's the only run the Bucks have been able to produce here today trailing two to one.
- 2:08:52Steve Rogers and Blylevin locked up in a pitcher's duel on opening day. Low outside with his thinker and it's ball one.
- 2:09:02Rogers a fierce competitor and he has come along.
- 2:09:08One of the members of their farm system that they've ran along to start him and he's a good one. The pitch.
- 2:09:14Swinging fly ball. Left center going to drop. Base hit. Left fielder Comardy will play it on the first bounce.
- 2:09:21Out is two for three. That's seven hits for the Pirates. Going to get a runner I believe.
- 2:09:27For Ed Odd it'll be Matt Alexander. Chuck Tanner going to try to steal something here.
- 2:09:36So Ed Odd will be lifted for the Pinch Runner.
- 2:09:49Ed Odd getting the single. Has been replaced for the Pinch Runner Matt Alexander who was the 25th man to make the 25 man team.
- 2:09:58Wednesday morning when we left Florida.
- 2:10:03He has excellent speed. Going to see if we can manufacture something here with Garner.
- 2:10:10The third baseman. All for two. The pitch. Strike called inside corner between the knees and the belt.
- 2:10:18If Garner could get him around the third you might see us go to the bench again because Enrique Romo and Kent Tukovic are listening in the Pirate bullpen down in the left field corner.
- 2:10:30Inning number seven. Tang runs aboard. Alexander has got that front foot out on the artificial surface. Pitch out. They're thinking about him. One ball one strike.
- 2:10:44Exposed two. Pirates one.
- 2:10:50Pirates saw opportunity. Knock twice and failed to answer. Throw over.
- 2:10:54Just barely missed him. That was close because Alexander was leaning and then delayed a little getting back and it was close at first base.
- 2:11:06One ball one strike on Garner. Drove the ball deep in the fifth inning to right but Valentine made a good play racing back to the track. Runner fakes a break doesn't go. Throw to first he's back.
- 2:11:16He might have been going on that pitch but he caught his spike or is the ankle in the seam between the dirt portion of that infield and the artificial surface.
- 2:11:28So Al Monchak helps him with his cap and gets him back toward the base.
- 2:11:32As we've mentioned before two and one seems to me to be a favorite pitch of Chuck Tanner's to run on.
- 2:11:38All right they'll take a good look at him here. They pitched out twice.
- 2:11:43They might be reluctant to do it here. I would think they would be. He's out. He picked off at first. Alexander can't believe it and neither can Al Monchak.
- 2:11:56First base umpires called two of those today. One on Moreno in the fourth and this one here.
- 2:12:02So the pinch runner picked off according to the first base umpire that is.
- 2:12:08No runs one hit no errors and nobody left. We have played seven. It is still the Expos two and the Pirates one.
- 2:13:09And I'd always say to it.
- 2:13:16Well we're gonna have a new pitcher.
- 2:13:18We'll have a new catcher and I'm sure it'll be in a coach. He has not come down yet but let out is not warming up and I think it will be Steve.
- 2:13:24You know this coming Sunday the Pirates will pay tribute to two of their all time great stars Dave Parker and Willie Stardell.
- 2:13:30Pre-game ceremonies the Cobra and Captain Willie will be presented with the many awards they won in 78.
- 2:13:35Such as the batting title Gold Glove Award the most valuable player award for Dave and Willie's comeback player of the year and the Fred Hutchinson Award.
- 2:13:42All fans attending Sunday's game will be given a suitable for framing eight by ten color photo of Dave and Willie free.
- 2:13:48So don't you miss it. Get your free photo of Dave Parker and Willie Stardell this Sunday April the 8th. Game time is 1 0 5.
- 2:13:58So Bert Blylevin picks creditably here Lanny and wouldn't have to stretch the imagination once just to have gotten him a run in the first or in the.
- 2:14:08See what the other ending was there.
- 2:14:12That was in the sixth inning when we had Taveras down to second with only one out and couldn't get him home.
- 2:14:16Had him a third in the first with one out and couldn't get him in.
- 2:14:19One of those in and Bert's probably still in with a tie game.
- 2:14:23Well he appeared to make a mistake on Carter on a 2 1 pitch and make a mistake on the header like Carter.
- 2:14:29He'll take it Dave. Blylevin in the seventh and ink walked a couple at three strikeouts.
- 2:14:34So not a bad outing statistically and we'll be interested to see what Bert has to say about it after we talk to him later.
- 2:14:43By the way Milo with Nicosia catching and Romo pitching the umpire is given the straight up and down side.
- 2:14:49Where you might expect Nicosia to hit ninth apparently Nicosia's going to bat seventh and Romo's going to bat eighth.
- 2:14:55Which means we'd probably get a good jitter for Enrique then when the Pirates bat in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:15:00And of course that's the reason that Jackson and Zacolby are continuing to throw down the pirate bullpen.
- 2:15:06Romo the screwball artist who throws a lot of pitches opens up with a scrooge to the left hand batting Rodney Scott who has walked bounced out twice he's 0 for 2.
- 2:15:18Rodney Scott starting at second for them today and batting in the 2 hole.
- 2:15:23Blylevin doesn't have to hang his head over this opening day assignment he pitched well.
- 2:15:28Alright Romo already here's the pitch. Down low and it's ball 2. Romo wants a different baseball.
- 2:15:35Cromartie's on deck and it'll be Valentine. Ending number 8 Expos at bat Montreal leading 2 to 1.
- 2:15:42Fans first look at Romo. Shakes off a sign now he's ready.
- 2:15:51The 2-0 pitch. Got that one oh he didn't get the call and it's 3-0.
- 2:15:57Romo who pitched the last two years with Seattle in the American League had pitched several years before that in the Mexican League.
- 2:16:04Evidently something got thrown onto the field and the plate umpire wants the third base umpire to chase it down and get it off the field and he has done that now.
- 2:16:18Three balls and no strikes.
- 2:16:24Left hand batter waiting and Romo ready to bring the 3-0 and it is ball 4. Comes on and walks the first batter with four pitches.
- 2:16:36That's the third walk given up by a pirate pitcher here today and that'll bring up left fielder Warren Cromartie.
- 2:16:42Hit into a double play in the opening inning. In the fourth inning.
- 2:16:46Fly it out to center. Sixth inning reached on a shortstop error.
- 2:16:50Williams the manager of the Expos has come out he's had a word with the home plate umpire Dave Pallone and now Pallone is going to convey some kind of message to Enrique Romo.
- 2:17:01Well I thought the way he went out that maybe he was talking about putting his hand up to his mouth but on this kind of a day they get permission for that.
- 2:17:10Apparently he was wearing a white batting glove under his fielder's glove and he has been asked to take it off and he's done so.
- 2:17:18All right. Cromartie now is up in there. He's 0-3 today. Scott is at first base and he has a big lead. He's really stretched out. Throw over and he got back in time.
- 2:17:31Romo working on the mound. The bullpen is busy with the veteran lefty Grant Jackson and last year's premier reliever of the Bucks Kent Toccovi.
- 2:17:39Wile oven gone and now Romo working and that is a strike. Got it across the letter. 0-1. Valentine will be next.
- 2:17:52Expos got a pair in the fifth. Pirates answered with one. It's still 2-1 Montreal. Inning number eight at the moment.
- 2:17:59Scott's got a big lead. Boy he's really got that lead. Takes a break to go. Doesn't go. Cromartie showed bunt and didn't go after it. The count is even at a ball and a strike.
- 2:18:101-1. Opening day. The Pirates hosting Montreal. The Expos will be here tomorrow and again on Sunday. Then we go to Philly.
- 2:18:17Next Thursday night, your first night game of the year here. The Cardinals come in for a long weekend. Then after that the Phillies will be here.
- 2:18:25One ball, one strike. Check that runner boy. He is flirting over there. Get that lead foot way out and he takes such a spread out stance as he stands there.
- 2:18:37You wonder how he can really get going but he's going and the throw will be late. It's a stolen base.
- 2:18:47Good strong throw by Steve Nikosha but Scott had a big jump and plus Romo was throwing an off speed breaking pitch and that was tough for Steve to try to get him down.
- 2:18:57No doubt about it. He stole that one clearly on Romo and as you pointed out, Steve made the good throw. But it's tough when you're given that advantage.
- 2:19:06The runner is going to beat you there more times than not no matter how good that throw is. So that pitcher's got to hold him.
- 2:19:12Two and one to count. Tap, swing, foul right side over toward the photographer's booth and bounces away. Ozzy Virgil, their first base coach, will retrieve it.
- 2:19:20Ozzy by the way has a son catching in the Philadelphia Philly organization. He's got some power too. He's a home run hitter.
- 2:19:29Two balls, two strikes. Runner at second. Montreal of course looking for insurance. They're leading 2-1 as they bat on the top of the eighth inning at Three Rivers.
- 2:19:39Now Nikosha and Romo having trouble getting together here. It might be that they're not quite clear on the indicator.
- 2:19:46Because the walk and the stolen base putting the runner into second and Steve did the right thing. Don't let him cross you up here.
- 2:19:56Let that man get over to third the easy way. He's already at second with nobody out.
- 2:20:02Stretch pitch on the way and it's inside. Three balls, two strikes. Romo having trouble with his radar system here.
- 2:20:12So we'll do a payoff pitch. Cromartie, left hand batter waiting. Romo looks, brings it. Swing and a miss. There is that.
- 2:20:24Water ball and he's struck him out. First strike out for Romo. Fourth strike out of an expo in the game and it brings up Valentine.
- 2:20:35Captain Willie coming in to say something to Romo.
- 2:20:42Could be a situation where you wouldn't want to give Valentine anything good to hit. You might throw him pitches but if you walk him, Perez do next, you'd set up a double play.
- 2:20:52And they've talked it over. Romo worked the first man he faced, Scott, and he is down at second with the walk and the stolen base.
- 2:21:00Cromartie fanning to make it one away and ours Valentine. He's 0 for 2, walked in the fourth inning. Here's the pitch.
- 2:21:06Just outside with a breaking ball. We got a break on Valentine in the sixth because he had a fly ball back in the warning track and Wright Parker had slipped.
- 2:21:14When he got back to it, he caught it but then dropped it. Valentine was confused on the play. We were able to get him in a run down between first and second.
- 2:21:22The big play at the time because it really helped Lylevon get out of what could have been a troublesome inning.
- 2:21:27Two errors behind him in the inning but they did not score against the Dutchman in that frame.
- 2:21:31Now Romo steps back, bluffs a throw to Stenet but no throw back obviously because the runner wasn't that far away.
- 2:21:38One ball, no strikes on the right fielder Valentine. He's flied out, walks, stolen the base and reached on an error. Inside backs him out of there.
- 2:21:48Two balls and no strikes.
- 2:21:55Windblown Three Rivers on a Friday, April 6, 1979 opener.
- 2:22:01Carter is homered for Monterey, all head out is homered for the Bucks. Expos leading in a 2-1 game, the pitch.
- 2:22:08Backs him out of there again and hits three balls and no strikes.
- 2:22:14Yeah, I think we were right. I think that was the plan.
- 2:22:17Indeed.
- 2:22:18He hit it on the breaking pitch that was not on the outside corner, was away. Valentine held up, tried to get him to chase that pitch inside.
- 2:22:24Get him to hit that pitch if he will because that's not his pitch. But if he takes it for a ball, don't worry about it.
- 2:22:32Don't give him a fat one here either. The big guy will be swinging and it's down while he walks in.
- 2:22:38So that's one of those unintentional, intentional two on, second walk of the inning for Romo, four walks to the Expos in the game with a strikeout in between.
- 2:22:48And there is tough Tony, Tony Perez. He's 0 for 3. Fly to Sutter, strikeout swinging, sixth inning.
- 2:22:55Well, Giner made a marvelous play on him way behind third.
- 2:22:59One of the reasons you don't make it an intentional walk is you've got a guy like Perez waiting in the wings.
- 2:23:03You'd like to get Valentine if you can get him to chase a bad pitch, but with Perez batting next, you've got to be careful.
- 2:23:09Yeah, and don't ruffle Tony's feathers either.
- 2:23:13You've got to walk him to pitch to Tony. Here's the pitch to Perez way inside, almost took off a kneecap.
- 2:23:23Romo is wilder than a March Hare here and out to talk to him is Steve Nacosia, the rookie catcher.
- 2:23:36Oh, Steve Nacosia, his first day in a big league uniform on opening day, along with Eddie Whitson and Dale Barra.
- 2:23:45He's had his conference with Romo, comes back in to give the sign.
- 2:23:49Scott's at second, Valentine at first, walks, put them both there.
- 2:23:53One down, eighth inning. Romo trying to keep them from insuring themselves further and a bouncer third.
- 2:23:58Giner will come to the bag out, fire to first, out a double play.
- 2:24:02How about that for getting out of a full blown mess.
- 2:24:09Second pirate double play, Giner unassisted before Scott coming over, then firing the first to get Perez.
- 2:24:15So the pitching to Valentine did pay off and they get the double play ball on Perez.
- 2:24:20No runs and no hits, no errors, a couple of walks, double play, one left.
- 2:24:24Middle of the eighth, expose to Pirates 1.
- 2:24:28Hey, DKA radio, Pittsburgh is what we're all about.
- 2:24:34Jack Bogat?
- 2:24:35Keeps you entertained in the morning when you're hitting all the potholes.
- 2:24:37He comes across more like a next door neighbor than a radio announcer.
- 2:24:41I like his Cato's hot dog.
- 2:24:43He turns a gloomy day into a bright one.
- 2:24:44He gets all that traffic information.
- 2:24:46He's the one I listen to when my alarm goes off in the morning.
- 2:24:49I have a cat and I like cats and he's flaky.
- 2:24:51He's our kind of man.
- 2:24:53Pittsburgh is what we're all about.
- 2:24:58Hi, this is Steve Blass.
- 2:24:59I'll be right where you are on Saturday enjoying the pirate game.
- 2:25:02Let's talk after the game.
- 2:25:04What were the good and bad plays?
- 2:25:06Who had the hot bat and why?
- 2:25:07How was the pitching staff?
- 2:25:09I want to hear from you about all that.
- 2:25:11So on Saturday, stay tuned after pirate baseball and we can all talk right here on KDKA radio 1020.
- 2:25:19KDKA radio, Pittsburgh is what we're all about.
- 2:25:25The pirate give away days keep on coming.
- 2:25:53The first pitch is a little bit worn by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 2:25:55Comes in the official pirate colors gold and black.
- 2:25:57And all kids attending the Pirate St. Louis game April 14th will get one free.
- 2:26:01Don't you miss it.
- 2:26:02Remember that same day, Captain Dynamite will blow himself up at second base.
- 2:26:12Giner leading it off against Rogers fouls off the first pitch as we go to the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 2:26:18The change at first Hutton for Perez is the only change by Dick Williams.
- 2:26:23Giner's 0 for 2.
- 2:26:25Steve Rogers working with a one run advantage in the eighth.
- 2:26:29Here's the pitch.
- 2:26:30Strike called outside corner, got scraps in a hole 0 and 2.
- 2:26:34Mike Easler will be the pitch hitter for Romo.
- 2:26:36He's already on deck.
- 2:26:45Rogers rocking, delivering, swinging, hit him on the fist, popped it foul over here to the left.
- 2:26:50It'll be into the seats out of play.
- 2:26:54Milo talking about this Montreal ball club.
- 2:26:56I think if there's a question, I'd ask right off the bat would be their bullpen.
- 2:26:59They've got good starting pitching in Rogers, Grembley, Lee, Shatner, Scott Anderson.
- 2:27:05But you have to wonder, they're both in now.
- 2:27:06They're warming up Woody Priman and Elias Sosa.
- 2:27:09All right, Giner in a hole 0 and 2.
- 2:27:11Rogers ready to work, kicks and he fires.
- 2:27:15And a swing and a foul at a high outside pitch.
- 2:27:17Rode it up to the right side, up underneath the Allegheny Club.
- 2:27:24For tomorrow, all the folks over there will be having a little get together after the game.
- 2:27:28We're going to go, aren't we?
- 2:27:29Yes, we are.
- 2:27:30It's 5.38 o'clock.
- 2:27:33No ball, two strike, count the pitch.
- 2:27:35Swinging, wind drive, hit in the right center.
- 2:27:37The ball's going to take off and roll.
- 2:27:39He is going to suck it.
- 2:27:41The throw will come in and it's a stand-up double for Stratmeier.
- 2:27:45And let's hope that is the start of something new.
- 2:27:55Bill Garner driving that ball through the right side into the gap.
- 2:27:59Starts it off, the tying runs and scoring position.
- 2:28:02That's our eighth hit.
- 2:28:04We lead them and hit 8 to 5, but Montreal leads them to score 2 to 1.
- 2:28:08And now Mike Eisler, left-hand pinch hitter, is out at home plate.
- 2:28:14Rodgers on his first O2 pitch to Garner, Scraps fouled it away.
- 2:28:18It was a good pitch by Rodgers and Phil was able to battle it off and foul it away.
- 2:28:22Then he missed with that next O2 pitch and Scraps, we like to point out,
- 2:28:25likes to attack the ball and drive it to the opposite tower alley he did so right there.
- 2:28:30Mike Eisler, who won the AAA batting title in the International League
- 2:28:34playing for our Columbus Clippers last year.
- 2:28:37Then he was purchased by the Red Sox and we liked him so much we traded for him to get him back.
- 2:28:42So here he is, a chance to pay a dividend on opening day.
- 2:28:48Garner carrying the mail at second.
- 2:28:50He's the tying run.
- 2:28:51Bucks need to get him home.
- 2:28:538th inning, 2 to 1 Montreal.
- 2:28:55Strike called outside corner at the knees.
- 2:28:58Frank Tavares, top man in the order, due up next.
- 2:29:03Garner at second with a lead-off double.
- 2:29:05Nobody out.
- 2:29:08Rodgers studying the sign and he has it.
- 2:29:11Stretches to the belt, checks Garner.
- 2:29:13Comes to the plate, outside, one ball, one strike.
- 2:29:18Eisler has some power, 18 home runs and AAA a year ago.
- 2:29:22He's won two minor league batting titles.
- 2:29:26He was having a good spring with the Red Sox before we traded for him.
- 2:29:29Hit a home run closing day against the White Sox in Florida.
- 2:29:33And he'd like to deliver here on opening day, you know that.
- 2:29:36Because he's batting with a tying run and scoring position in the person of Phil Garner.
- 2:29:41And here is the 1-1 pitch.
- 2:29:43Swinging a high bouncer along the right side, Hutton over.
- 2:29:46He'll flip to Rodgers, they get him, but the bounce out does get Garner over.
- 2:29:53He's only 90 feet away now.
- 2:29:56Score that last one, 3 to 1.
- 2:29:58Hutton to Rodgers.
- 2:30:00It was a high chap that hung up in the air, no chance to do anything but flip and get him.
- 2:30:04Garner is now at third.
- 2:30:06Frank Savaris could be lifted.
- 2:30:08Dale Barra is coming out of the dugout talking with Chuck Tanner.
- 2:30:17Now if that were to take place, you'd probably see Dale stay in the game play third.
- 2:30:24I think Milner's going to bat. Left hand is better than Milner.
- 2:30:27Alright.
- 2:30:29Dale would be ready and go in to play the infield.
- 2:30:31He'd play third with that hamstring still not fully well and Garner would probably play shortstop.
- 2:30:36Interesting too.
- 2:30:38If they went to their bullpen and brought Freiman on, a left hand and a pitch to Milner,
- 2:30:42then you'd come back with Tommy Lee Lacey.
- 2:30:45He talks about having a bench.
- 2:30:47Chuck's got some people there that he can make these kind of moves.
- 2:30:50Jim Brewer, their pitching coach, is out to talk to Rodgers.
- 2:30:53They've got a full blown powwow going on out there.
- 2:30:55Milner, who did such a great job for us a year ago, really did.
- 2:31:01He played first base, the outfield, did a good job off the bench,
- 2:31:04hit two grand slams for us last year.
- 2:31:08And as you heard Chuck Tanner talk before the game on the leadoff,
- 2:31:11this is the best bench he has had in nine years of managing in the big leagues.
- 2:31:15By the way, I don't think this is a slam.
- 2:31:17Frank, I think this is a situation where you want a fly ball hitter.
- 2:31:19Savaris is more of a ground ball type of line drive hitter.
- 2:31:22So Milner's the choice here in this situation.
- 2:31:24Absolutely right about that.
- 2:31:26And you're trying to get that tying run in and hang on for dear life
- 2:31:29on opening day at home, trailing by a run, infield up, the pitch, and a bouncer right side.
- 2:31:35It's bobbled, but he throws in time.
- 2:31:38Scott bobbled the ball.
- 2:31:40It kind of jumped up in his hand, dropped, then he grabbed it.
- 2:31:44Milner is out to make it two away, and that puts it up to Omar Moreno.
- 2:31:50Hit the ball and a high chop for the second.
- 2:31:53Rodney Scott had a little trouble with it.
- 2:31:56Then when he did recapture it, he looked to third.
- 2:31:59Good thing that Garner didn't gamble because he'd have been a dead duck.
- 2:32:03Here is Moreno, one for two, singled in the fourth, sacrificed in the sixth.
- 2:32:08It's the third time today that the Bucs have had a chance to score
- 2:32:12and so far have not been able to penetrate.
- 2:32:14The only run coming on the Ed Ott-Homer to right center in the fifth inning.
- 2:32:20So it's up to the antelope.
- 2:32:23Omar Moreno left hand batter against the right hand pitcher Rogers.
- 2:32:26He's stretching, looking to third and delivering.
- 2:32:28Breaking ball, strike called over the outside corner.
- 2:32:31Started that pitch way outside when it broke and nipped the outside corner,
- 2:32:34and it's a called strike.
- 2:32:36Parker is on deck.
- 2:32:38Montreal leading two to one.
- 2:32:40Rogers living a charmed life here today.
- 2:32:45No balls, one strike.
- 2:32:47Here's the pitch.
- 2:32:49Down and in.
- 2:32:51One ball, one strike.
- 2:32:52In the first inning, Taveras was at third with one out,
- 2:32:54but Rogers struck out Parker and Stargell.
- 2:32:58Sixth inning, Taveras was at second with one out.
- 2:33:00Struck out Parker, got Stargell to pop up.
- 2:33:03Now in this inning, we had a runner at third with one out.
- 2:33:06Pinch hitter Milner bounced out, couldn't get him home.
- 2:33:08Now it's up to Omar, the one-one pitch.
- 2:33:12A high bounce, out behind seconds, fire throws, and doesn't get him.
- 2:33:17The game is tied.
- 2:33:23Absolute raw speed enabled the Pirates to tie this game
- 2:33:28because Omar Moreno, flying down the first base line,
- 2:33:32beat the ref on an eyelight call.
- 2:33:34Well, that was going on.
- 2:33:36Giner scored, and it's a brand new game.
- 2:33:39Omar Moreno, while you talk about busting his gut going down that line,
- 2:33:45he was going all out.
- 2:33:48We're tied at 2-2, and here's the Cobra.
- 2:33:52RBI infield hit for Moreno, his second hit of the game.
- 2:33:58Now Dave Parker, 0 for 3, has struck out twice.
- 2:34:02Throw to first, Moreno back.
- 2:34:04Tommy Hutton taking the throw.
- 2:34:07The big high chopper, out behind second.
- 2:34:10Got to get spire credit, he made a heck of a play.
- 2:34:13But Moreno's speed was truly the difference.
- 2:34:16Proud wanting Moreno to run, of course.
- 2:34:19The defending not only National League, but Major League Base Stealing champion
- 2:34:23from 1978, and we've got a brand new game at 2-2.
- 2:34:29The Pirates have out hit them 9-5.
- 2:34:33Parker struck out in the first,
- 2:34:35flied out to left field in the fourth, struck out again in the sixth.
- 2:34:38So the two-time bounding champion, 77 and 78.
- 2:34:42Blank to deliver here, and do something about changing the face of that scoreboard.
- 2:34:52Pirates 2 runs 9 hits. Montreal 2 runs 5 hits.
- 2:34:57All right, Omar with the lead.
- 2:34:59Throw over, he's back.
- 2:35:01Rodgers has picked off two would-be base stealers today.
- 2:35:04He picked off Moreno in the fourth, and pinch runner Alexander in the seventh.
- 2:35:10There, Joe would be next, but right now it's up to the Cobra.
- 2:35:13Got a speed merchant at first base, Omar Moreno.
- 2:35:16His infield hit got the tying run home.
- 2:35:18Throw over does not get him.
- 2:35:21So the fans being treated to a tough tight ball game on opening day.
- 2:35:27Right now we're in the eighth inning, nodded at 2-8.
- 2:35:35Looks like somebody had a confetti parade, and it all blew on the infield here.
- 2:35:40The pitch on the way, swinging and fouled over to the right side back into the seat.
- 2:35:48You catch one of those today, Bear Hendon.
- 2:35:50It's going to sting for a week.
- 2:35:52You'll feel it all the way down to your elbows.
- 2:35:54Feel like you stuck your hand in a snowblower.
- 2:35:58No balls in one strike.
- 2:36:02Parker trying to deliver, Moreno with his lead at first base, edging a little.
- 2:36:07Going, the pitch, swing on.
- 2:36:10Fly ball down the left side, but it's bending foul.
- 2:36:12Nobody will be able to get there.
- 2:36:13Parrish made a heck of a try.
- 2:36:15He must have run 150 feet down the left field line, a drop in foul ground, of course.
- 2:36:20Left fielder playing Parker over had no chance to come over and try and get it,
- 2:36:24so it's no balls and two strikes.
- 2:36:35All right, waiting for everybody to get back in place here now.
- 2:36:39Well, we hope that our old pal, Paul Kurtz, who was a writer for many years here
- 2:36:43and has been in the press box more years than you can remember,
- 2:36:47missing his first opening day in a number of years.
- 2:36:50Paul's been in the hospital and just couldn't make it today,
- 2:36:52so Paulie, your old buddy Paul Kurtz, you get out here when the weather gets better.
- 2:36:55We're looking for you.
- 2:36:57No balls, two strikes.
- 2:36:58Runner not going.
- 2:36:59Up high a ball.
- 2:37:01The crowd today, 36,141.
- 2:37:0736,141.
- 2:37:10And a brisk, chilly day, a tribute to these fans turning out today.
- 2:37:14Now the fans would we want a hit.
- 2:37:16Listen to them.
- 2:37:20The pitch runner going, swinging to drive the center,
- 2:37:23but it will be caught by Dawson about six feet short of the track.
- 2:37:29The runner was going.
- 2:37:30Parker lifted the fly ball into center.
- 2:37:32Dawson just drifted back, made the catch, side-retired.
- 2:37:35Bucks have to settle for the moment for a tie.
- 2:37:38One run and a couple of hits.
- 2:37:40Geiner had a lead-off double.
- 2:37:41Moreno got him home with a high chopper out behind second.
- 2:37:46No errors and one man left.
- 2:37:48We played eight innings, we're all tied up here.
- 2:37:51Exposed two, pirates two.

- 2:38:49We'll check the pirate changes after we break the stations all around the five state right here.
- 2:38:58Station identification time on the pirate baseball network.
- 2:39:02When you get up, you want to know the latest news, sports and weather.
- 2:39:05I'm Dave James.
- 2:39:06Join me along with Ed Chauncey on the Jack Bogat Show tomorrow morning on KDKA Pittsburgh.
- 2:39:14Changes, new pitcher Kent Sokovi, new shortstop, Garner moving over from third,
- 2:39:18and Dale Barrow will play third base.
- 2:39:20As Sokovi warms up, want to remind you fans from the five state area that you can buy
- 2:39:25pirate tickets easier than ever now.
- 2:39:27Just go to one of the 83 selected Murphy store and Murphy locations,
- 2:39:30tell them what games you'd like to see.
- 2:39:32They'll tell you exactly where your seats will be before you buy your tickets.
- 2:39:35So remember, for box and reserves fee tickets, visit the pirate ticket office at your nearest Murphy location,
- 2:39:40including the following.
- 2:39:42Titusville, PA, Toronto, Ohio, Uniontown, Pennsylvania, the mark on Elm Road in Warren, Ohio, and Warren, Pennsylvania.
- 2:39:56So Kent Sokovi, with the great credentials of a 78 season.
- 2:40:01He was fantastic.
- 2:40:04And he will be facing Gary Carter.
- 2:40:08He's our third pitcher following Stuyder Blylevin, who pitched well enough to win a lot of games.
- 2:40:13Romo worked the eight, little while with a couple of walks, but a double play got him out of it.
- 2:40:19Sokovi, ready to work.
- 2:40:23He is winding in his first pitch to Carter inside ball one.
- 2:40:36Ending number nine, we're tied 2-2.
- 2:40:38Smashed a deep short, Giner bobbled it, picks it up, won't throw.
- 2:40:45That's an E6.
- 2:40:49Scrapp was playing a couple of steps towards the third base line, so he was in the hole to actually take control of it, but couldn't find the handle.
- 2:41:02That's the third pirate error.
- 2:41:04The ring of parishes had two singles and a fly ball to center.
- 2:41:07He's two for three.
- 2:41:11So in this ninth with the changes, Starduland Stenov still on the right side, Giner and Barra on the left.
- 2:41:17Sokovi the new pitcher.
- 2:41:19The outfield swings around to the left on Parrish because this big guy pulls about everything, but not here because he's going to be bunting in a tie game, and he bunts it foul in its strike one.
- 2:41:28Robinson left, Moreno center, Parker right.
- 2:41:31Nicosia catching, came on in the eighth inning when Ed Ott got his second hit.
- 2:41:35Ott Homer just supplied one of our runs today.
- 2:41:40Then was lifted for a pinch runner, and Nicosia came on to catch.
- 2:41:44Kyra at first, reaching on the Giner error, doesn't take a big lead.
- 2:41:48Tokovi stretching, scored away to Bunnys Parrish, bunts it down the first base side foul, and it's strike two.
- 2:41:54Now with this big guy up there, let's see if Dick Williams leaves it on.
- 2:42:01Dick Williams of course remembered, I'm sure mostly, for his managing of those world champion Oakland A's for a number of years.
- 2:42:16Parrish singled in the third, singled in the fifth, and scored their second run.
- 2:42:21The Pirates about hit them nine to five, but the score is tied two-two.
- 2:42:27Now Kent Tokovi making his first appearance of 78 in the opener here at home.
- 2:42:32No balls, two strikes, Parrish won't be buttoned here, the pitch.
- 2:42:37Swings and fouls it off out of play.
- 2:42:42Tokovi did not have a particularly impressive spring, but I think we pointed out sufficiently that he was working on some things.
- 2:42:48And he was trying to improve his repertoire more than he was bring home impressive Florida stats.
- 2:42:54And not only working on particular pitches, the sinker and the slider, but also working on different pitches to different hitters, trying some things there.
- 2:43:01No balls, two strikes, pitch on the way, swings and he misses on a sinker almost in the dirt.
- 2:43:06Parrish strikes out.
- 2:43:09First strike out for Teek, fifth strike out of an expo in the game, it'll bring up their shortstop, Chris Fier.
- 2:43:15Now Willie Stardew wants to have a word with Kent Tokovi.
- 2:43:19Remember the game tomorrow starts at 2.15 if you're not able to make it on our salute to the Super Steelers.
- 2:43:25We'll be on the air at 2 o'clock with the warm-up show, the leadoff man.
- 2:43:30Sunday game time is 1.05 on Stardew Parker Day.
- 2:43:34We'll be on the air at 12.50 on Sunday.
- 2:43:40All right, the conference between the captain and the Teek is over.
- 2:43:44Spire the batter, he's 0 for 3, the pitch.
- 2:43:48Fier comes inside, ball one.
- 2:43:50Spire had a bid for a hit taken away in the fifth on the first of two exceptional plays by Stenett,
- 2:43:55and he made them back to back in the fifth inning.
- 2:44:02Spire the shortstop, a right-hand batter.
- 2:44:05See if they put something on together with him and Carter.
- 2:44:09Did he go after it, they're asking? Yes he did, it's a swinging strike.
- 2:44:14Roger's due next, they've got Tony Saleta, a young man they picked up, well, simply a young man,
- 2:44:18he's been in the game a while, picked up from California Angels.
- 2:44:23All right, it's a ball and a strike.
- 2:44:27Kent Sokovi working in his first inning, he's our third pitcher.
- 2:44:29Blylevin worked the first seven.
- 2:44:32Romo worked the eighth, throw over to first base, not close.
- 2:44:37Expos led 2-0, 2-1.
- 2:44:39Otzheimer cut it in half.
- 2:44:41Eighth inning, Moreno's speed, beating out a chopper out behind second.
- 2:44:46Spire threw, couldn't get him, and while that play was being reeled off,
- 2:44:50Garner scored from third to tie it.
- 2:44:52So here we are, 2-2 in the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:44:55The pitch. Bouncer foul, third base side.
- 2:44:59Fans reaching across the backseat railing wanting that souvenir, but it didn't come to them.
- 2:45:04So a guy jumps out and grabs it.
- 2:45:09One ball and two strikes.
- 2:45:15Montreal batting in the ninth.
- 2:45:17They've seen a 2-0 lead disappear.
- 2:45:19They're involved now in a 2-2 tie.
- 2:45:24Keiter at first reaching out an error, stayed there as Perry struck out.
- 2:45:28Now a 1-2 to Spire, swing, and a miss.
- 2:45:30He struck him out.
- 2:45:32Two strikeouts for Sokovi.
- 2:45:38He's going to bring out the pinch hitter.
- 2:45:40Tell us something about this fellow, will you?
- 2:45:42Well, we should know a little bit about him.
- 2:45:44Saleta in 73 played for our Charleston AAA ball club.
- 2:45:48Sokovi was not on that 73 club, so he would not have seen him,
- 2:45:52but he might have seen him a little bit in that pirate camp of 73.
- 2:45:55Saleta's going to be a good stick off their bat.
- 2:45:59He's from Samoa originally, last year, 223 for the Angels,
- 2:46:02had one home run and 14 runs batted in.
- 2:46:04Left-handed stick.
- 2:46:06They're going to talk him over, too.
- 2:46:08Chuck Tanner's out there with Sokovi, Starjul, Nicosia, and Vera.
- 2:46:11In the meantime, Garner and Stenna are talking over near Stenna's position.
- 2:46:17And with this left-hand batter coming up, the time score came in the eighth for the Bucks.
- 2:46:24And right now, with Keiter at first and two away, Sokovi wants to get this guy, of course,
- 2:46:30not let that top of the order come up here and give his teammates a chance
- 2:46:34to come in the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:46:36Pirates two runs, nine hits. Expos two runs, five hits.
- 2:46:40The Pirates have made three errors, but it didn't help the Expos get their two runs at all.
- 2:46:46So while the errors look big on the board, they don't reflect in the score from Montreal at all.
- 2:46:51Now the stretch, here's the pitch. Outside low, ball one.
- 2:46:58Sokovi in the ninth. After the error committed by Garner playing short for the first time in the inning,
- 2:47:05struck out, parished. Spire has just struck out.
- 2:47:08Now a 1-0 delivery on the way to Salado, and here it comes.
- 2:47:12Sends a high fly ball to left. Robinson drifting back, shielding his eyes from a high sun.
- 2:47:17Has it, side retired.
- 2:47:20So the stage is set for the Bucks to do it in the ninth.
- 2:47:25So let's go get them Buccos. We'll go to the bottom of the ninth pad. Montreal two to Pirates two.
- 2:47:32Think of yourself in a special way, in a little color by Chevrolet.
- 2:47:40Think of yourself behind the wheel, enjoying a special money-color feel,
- 2:47:47sitting tall, feeling proud.
- 2:47:51Think of yourself in a personal world of space, comfort, and hushed luxury,
- 2:47:56with a satisfying feel of the road under you, and crisp, classic styling around you that says,
- 2:48:02this is something special, and it is Monte Carlo by Chevrolet.
- 2:48:06Drive one and reward yourself.
- 2:48:10Think of yourself behind the wheel, enjoying a special money-color feel,
- 2:48:17sitting tall, feeling proud.
- 2:48:21The new Monte Carlo by Chevrolet.
- 2:48:24Put a little distance between yourself and your pride.
- 2:48:30Well a fellow who a year ago was with us all during spring training, then on practice the last day, we shipped him off to Oakland, and he had a heck of a year for those Oakland A's, didn't he?
- 2:48:49He led Sousa. Yes he did. Last year the A's was 8-2, 2.64 ERA.
- 2:48:56When you think of the way the Oakland A's scabbard, think about how they did a good start last year, and after that they settled down a little bit.
- 2:49:05So it's Sousa, their second pitcher, Rogers, for Montreal, where 8 innings, he gave up 2 runs, 9 hits at 7 strikeouts, and did not walk a batter.
- 2:49:20Alright, when Sousa's ready, and he is now, you'll be looking at Stargell, Robinson, and Stennett as we go to the bottom of the ninth, wrapped up here in a 2-2 tie.
- 2:49:35Alright, Willie Stargell has had one hit that was a single in the fourth inning.
- 2:49:40Around the hit, he struck out and popped up. He's leading off in the ninth inning against Elias Sousa, and his pitch on the way is down low, ball one.
- 2:49:50Bill Robinson on deck. Proud of over 36,000 on opening day. Here's the pitch.
- 2:49:59Breaking pitch with something off, takes it for a strike, 1-1 to Captain Willie.
- 2:50:04If we'd had any kind of break in the weather here today, we'd have had 45 easy. Here's the pitch. Swing, and a miss, ran it up and in.
- 2:50:11One ball and two strikes.
- 2:50:171-2 the count, as Sousa reads the sign from Charter. Here's the pitch on the way, swinging low, look out, foul.
- 2:50:23I'm telling you something, folks, you can thank goodness that ball hit the bottom of the box seed railing.
- 2:50:29That had been up a foot. Man, that's why we tell you so often, if you're going to come and sit in those lower seats, you've absolutely got to pay attention every minute.
- 2:50:39This is not a tea party or a ladies' aide.
- 2:50:42Line drive hit, right center. The ball will be cut off in the gap of drop. Stargell's trying for two, the trail, he's got to be out.
- 2:50:53The umpire checking to see that the ball was held onto by Spire.
- 2:50:57Stargell gambling when he saw the ball dropped by Dawson, he ran by it.
- 2:51:02Not Tony Baderome coming out to see if Willie's alright. Willie's getting up and walking away, so he is.
- 2:51:08But he was trying to get into second and get that go-ahead run in scoring position.
- 2:51:12One important thing for us is that Ballentine got to the ball in a hurry. Good play by their right fielder, and he has a good arm.
- 2:51:18Good stroke throw to Spire, 9-6 the put out to cut Stargell down to second base.
- 2:51:23So he'll be credited with a single, Tanner out to pat him on the back saying, don't worry about that big guy.
- 2:51:28You were hustling, you were trying to help us win a ball game.
- 2:51:31Here's a pitch to Robbie upstairs, ball one.
- 2:51:35Because if the gamble had paid off, by then he'd be in scoring position with nobody else.
- 2:51:41Alright Robinson waiting, the 1-0 from Soto, off speed upstairs, inside, two balls, no strike.
- 2:51:47Somebody's been dipping in the Yakudoc here today, haven't we, and got a difference of opinion on where maybe their seat ought to be, and the Gendarmes have been called in.
- 2:52:00Here's the 2-0 to Bill Robinson, swinging and lacing it right to the third baseman on a straight line drive, and it's 2-0-A.
- 2:52:07Hit the ball right on the button, but right at Parrish, a third.
- 2:52:10That makes it 2-0-A, and it brings up the second baseman, Renny Stenit. He is 0 for 3 today.
- 2:52:17Renny has bounced a short, struck out, swinging and flied to right.
- 2:52:27Hitting number nine, the reliever, Ilya Sosa, coming on in relief of Rodgers.
- 2:52:33High inside, had to duck under it, ball one.
- 2:52:43One ball and no strike.
- 2:52:48Alright, right hander ready, the pitch.
- 2:52:51Swinging and fouling into our dugout, almost nip skipper Chuck Tanner.
- 2:52:58One ball and one strike, looking up behind the screen today, having half a Newcastle was here.
- 2:53:03Looks like all the folks we saw in Florida.
- 2:53:07One ball and one strike on Renny with nobody on in front of him and 2-0-A.
- 2:53:10Swings, sends a high five all the way to right.
- 2:53:13Valentine will come in about three or four steps. We have extra innings on opening day.
- 2:53:19No runs, one hit. Sargeal out trying to stretch his single to a double, no errors, and nobody left.
- 2:53:25We go to the tenth, Montreal two runs on five hips, the Pirates two runs on ten hips.
- 2:53:32Did you ever use crutches or wear a cast because of a broken arm or leg?
- 2:53:37Do you still remember the glimpses of others showing pity and curiosity?
- 2:53:41Your broken bones did not change you as a person, and being permanently disabled doesn't change a person either.
- 2:53:48I'm Dave James. The disabled are people just like all of us, people who have needs and desires.
- 2:53:54Desires to be able to work and play and be given a chance to prove to themselves and to others that they can make it.
- 2:54:01Your local Easter Seals Society for many, many years has been helping the disabled become more useful citizens.
- 2:54:07People who can work and be an asset to their community. But your help is needed.
- 2:54:12Your help and attitude to accept the disabled as neighbors and friends in your community.
- 2:54:18KDKA Radio urges you to visit your local Easter Seals Society and learn about the programs available to the disabled in your area.
- 2:54:27KEN TAKOBE will be working in the second inning as we go to the tenth inning. And it will be looking at the top of the Montreal order. That will be Andre Dawson, Rodney Scott, and Warren Cromartie. So we have really had a tough tight one here. Not able to break through. And as a result, we're going to have extra innings on opening day. A bargain to say the least here.
- 2:54:52Dawson, who will be leading it off, is one for four. He had a big two-out single that drove in a run in the fifth inning. Scott is 0 for 2, but he's walked twice. Cromartie is 0 for 4. With a trio that's going to be starting it here in the tenth inning, has one hit among them.
- 2:55:09San Diego will be at LA tonight. Giants at Swincy. And the run down of the afternoon and night will be yours. Remember, we're in the regular season now. You heard Chuck Tanner in the warm-up today with us. And of course, after every game, Lanny gives you the run down on the scoreboard and the highlights.
- 2:55:26Here's the pitch. Low inside of all to Dawson. Dawson, their center fielder. Remember, tomorrow at 2-15 game, Sunday 1-0-5. And the 1-0 from the peak is...hit him in the middle of the back.
- 2:55:45Not exactly the way peak wanted to start it here in extra innings, you know that. Dawson just couldn't roll away. It hit him in the small of the back, evidently. The trainer had to look at him along with the manager, Dick Williams.
- 2:55:56So you've got Dawson at first with nobody out in the tenth inning, and he is a threat to be moving. So, the Colby and the Coates here are going to have to really be alert here.
- 2:56:06And we're going to need somebody in that dugout, Lanny, with some leather lungs to help Steve out, because the batter's going to be blocking him. In other words, if he's moving, those guys in the dugout have got to be helping Steve. There he goes.
- 2:56:19I think the Colby down through the years has been a pretty good pitcher, holding runners on, and he'll give Steve a pretty good shot.
- 2:56:26Right here is Rodney Scott. He walked in the opening inning, bounced out a couple of times, and in the eighth inning, let off for the walk, stole second. Scott, I'll be looking for the punt here.
- 2:56:39Bear is already up 25 feet at third. Outfield, shallowed up and around toward the left side with him batting, and the first pitch strike called over the outside corner above the knees. No balls and a strike.
- 2:56:58Inning number 10. Pirates have out hit him 10 to 5, but just weren't able to deliver in a couple of innings where they really had golden opportunities. As a result, we're in the tenth tie, 2 to 2.
- 2:57:10Lyle Evans pitched very well. Romo had a little trouble, but pitched a scoreless inning. It's now to Colby. Pitch out.
- 2:57:18Dawson did give a little fake break that he might be going. Boy, Joe Robinson is really playing a shallow left field, way in and over a couple of extra steps closer to the left field line.
- 2:57:30Grant Jackson's been joined by Jim Bibby now in the pirate bullpen. Need somebody ready in case something starts to blow up here. Strike called in the outside corner. He showed butt, but never really went after it.
- 2:57:45One ball and two strikes. So, we play all spring. Come home for opening day. And to the good loyal fans that showed up in this breezy, windy, chilly weather, 36,000 plus, they've got extra innings to witness.
- 2:58:03One ball, two strikes. Runner edging, but not going. Throw over, not close. Dick just kind of labored it over there. A one ball, two strike count as the Expos bat in the tenth inning.
- 2:58:17Rodney Scott the batter. Dawson with good speed at first base. He's faking that going. Strike. There he called. Outside corner. Scott doesn't like it a little bit. He's jaw to jaw. Dick Williams going to come out now and try to get him away from the plate umpire.
- 2:58:33The umpire has walked away from him twice. Plate umpire took a lot of abuse right there and not throwing him out.
- 2:58:45The call he pitched him away really well. Good pitch. He ran that fastball pailing away in the outside corner. By the way, what credit to this umpiring crew. Dave Pallone, the home plate umpire. They've been thrown into quite a pressure cooker with the regular umpires out.
- 2:59:00And Mr. Pallone calling balls and strikes. I think he's called a consistent game here today.
- 2:59:07Somebody setting off a cherry bomb or something. Proving once again that brains and trains only rhyme and he obviously missed it. Throw to first base. Not close. Fun is fun but that ain't funny.
- 2:59:32Dawson at first is Kramarty Vaps. He's 0-4. Valentine on deck. Inning number 10.
- 2:59:38Takovey comes to the stretch. Throw to first. A little quicker that time with the runners back.
- 2:59:43Dawson stretched out full. Getting back to the bag.
- 2:59:48Steve Rogers who pitched a good game before he was lifted. Picked off a couple of our runners. Moreno and Alexander. So he picked up off a couple of speed merchants didn't he?
- 3:00:00Alright Takovey ready again. Throw's over that way. Throw goodbye. Sargell going down the right side against the backseat railing. He has to chase it down and now they've got a runner at second base.
- 3:00:14They're in scoring position in the first of Dawson and Kramarty is the batter. There's still no count to him. Left hand swinger. Takovey delivers to him and he swings and bounces it right to Sargell. He will flip to Takovey. It's out at first base. Dawson moves over to third.
- 3:00:30Score at 3-1. Captain Willie De Teek makes it 2 away and bring up Ellis Valentine there right fielder who is 0-2. He's walked a couple of times.
- 3:00:42Pirate pitchers have walked four, struck out seven, hit a batter.
- 3:00:52We've had errors on Taveras, Parker, Geiner and Sargell. Up till now they haven't hurt.
- 3:01:04Takovey now going to look at a dangerous right hand hitter. Valentine's a good one. No chance to ease up here. We're in the tenth inning tied at 2-2. Montreal batting with a runner at third. Takovey stretching, looks to third, delivers, swing and a miss and a sinker in the bottom literally dropped out of that sinker ball.
- 3:01:24Takovey struck out a couple in the ninth inning. He has struck out one here in the tenth. Last couple of years his stack has zoomed as a reliever in this league.
- 3:01:39Topped it off with 91 appearances last year and 31 saves. Here's the 0-1 pitch. A high chop toward short. Third baseman can't flag it down. Vera wanted to snap and throw and couldn't run scores.
- 3:01:54That's going to be an error on Vera and it's the fifth pirate error of the game. And it's 3-2 Montreal. It was a high chop toward short going toward Geiner but Vera playing third as he's supposed to do is supposed to cut in front and make that play. But he never got the ball in his glove.
- 3:02:16So Hutton will be batting now for the first time. It's a 3-2 Montreal lead. I think it's a play a third baseman has got to make aggressively. I think Dale kind of sat back out a little bit.
- 3:02:28Alright this is Tommy Hutton, a left hand batter, up for the first time, came on in the eighth replacing Perez at first. Runner going, throw down and it's going to be safe because the ball is dropped.
- 3:02:39Good strong throw by Nicosia, a little maybe on the third base side. And I think Geiner going back to get it and then trying to come with a swipe. Had the ball kicked out of his glove.
- 3:02:50Yeah, Steve unloaded in a hurry and it was a good strong throw and then Scrapp's trying to get it from the third base to the second base side of the second. Made the dive forward and never did find the handle.
- 3:02:59It's a 3-2 Montreal. It'll go as a stolen base. Tommy Hutton is the batter. The left hand batter with a runner at second and two down and a strike call.
- 3:03:10So a hit batsman, an error and another error have given the Expos a chance to recapture the lead. They've scored the go ahead run without the benefit of a single hit in the inning.
- 3:03:22Those are tough to take. One ball and one strike. Valentine at second. Turning, throwing, runner got back. The timing was there but just a bit late as Valentine tipped code back in.
- 3:03:43A ball and a strike. The call he stretches, looks back, kicks and delivers, swings and he misses.
- 3:03:57A one ball, two strike count. Hutton is the batter.
- 3:04:04Playing first base in the late innings. Right now we are in the tenth inning and Montreal leading for the second time. They led 2-0. Now it's 3-2 Expos. Here's the pitch.
- 3:04:15Fouled it down the right side, kicks off the railing and it'll go out toward Parker in right field. So still one ball, two strikes.
- 3:04:28Pirate errors are as high as the Expo hit total, five. And two errors in this inning finally caught up with the Bucks. Their first three errors did not hurt.
- 3:04:40But the two in this inning definitely did. Alright, one ball, two strikes. The call he's pitch outside, 2-2.
- 3:04:52The call he's looked good here today. He's got him hitting the ground ball, he's had three strikeouts and it appears to be getting good movement. Especially on that fastball he's been running away from left-handed hitters.
- 3:05:01Really does. Really looks like the take away we saw last year. Bouncer left side of the mound, he has it, throws, got him, side retired. But they have an inning.
- 3:05:14They get one run without a hit. There were two pirate errors. A hit batsman and one man left. So the Bucks have to do it all over again.
- 3:05:22We're going to the bottom of the 10th of three rivers on opening day. It's now Montreal 3 and the Pirates 2.
- 3:05:52The Bucks are going to the bottom of the 10th.
- 3:06:15When you say bird wiser, you say it all.
- 3:06:24And either Bush, St. Louis.
- 3:06:36In the bottom of the 10th inning, Steve Nikosha will be batting for the first time. Then it will be Garner and Vera.
- 3:06:54So here's Steve Nikosha. Last year a good solid year in AAA. Hit around 320, missed out on the batting title to his teammate of last year, Mike Isler.
- 3:07:07And here they are teammates on the big league club this year.
- 3:07:13Head off before he left the game, had a homer and a single. Now Nikosha batting for the first time, swings and misses against Sosa.
- 3:07:20Sosa working in his second inning. Garner is on deck. Pirates have out hit them 10 to 5, but at the moment trail 3 to 2.
- 3:07:32Here's the pitch. Strike called inside corner between the letters and the belt. So Nikosha in a hole, 0-2.
- 3:07:42Exposed in front by a run, an unearned run that they picked up on the top of this the 10th inning.
- 3:07:48Pitch on the way. Outside, he wasted one. Nikosha had a notion but laid off. One ball, two strikes.
- 3:08:01One and two to count as the pitch comes on. Swinging, fly ball, center, but it won't carry as Dawson is there and has it.
- 3:08:12Small hit to straightaway center today, gets flattened out a little bit. That'll bring up Garner.
- 3:08:20Garner started the game at third, moved over to shortstop in the ninth inning.
- 3:08:27And as we saw in the final spring game in Florida against the White Sox, we saw him play some shortstop for that very reason.
- 3:08:33There would normally be the backup shortstop, fouled off, back to the right. There can play third right now but can't play short because of that hamstring pull that bothered in the last couple of weeks of spring training.
- 3:08:46So this is Garner. What would Baradou do up next? See right called. Nikosha.
- 3:08:53Side of the inning by flying to center. Garner now in a hole, 0-2. We're in the tenth. Montreal leading 3 to 2.
- 3:09:01Here's the pitch. Swinging foul upstairs. Out again. Look out below.
- 3:09:15No balls and two strikes. The Bucks need a base runner. Garner, who started the eighth with a double and scored one at the time, was the tying run to make it 2-2.
- 3:09:23Now popcorn box is blowing out in front of home plate.
- 3:09:27Boy, there's stuff all over here.
- 3:09:30Maybe the folks that cleaned this place up could just let the wind blow all night and clean it up.
- 3:09:36Upstairs at a high pitch, one ball and two strikes.
- 3:09:43The Expos took advantage of it. Batsman and a couple of errors to score a go-ahead run in the top of this the tenth inning.
- 3:09:50The Expos in front for the second time. They're leading 3 to 2. Pirates trying to hang on for dear life here and get somebody on and get the top of the order up.
- 3:10:01Here's the 1-2 pitch. Strike three called.
- 3:10:05Sharp breaking pitch. Outside corner, belt high.
- 3:10:09First strikeout for Sosa. The eighth strikeout of a pirate.
- 3:10:14And here is Barra.
- 3:10:26Barra takes one high inside of all.
- 3:10:31One ball, no strikes. Barra batting for the first time.
- 3:10:373 to 2, Montreal leading. It's Sosa's game to win, by the way.
- 3:10:44If he can get another out, here's the pitch. Up high, ball two.
- 3:10:51Now the pitcher is due up next.
- 3:10:54We have used Milner and Isler.
- 3:10:59Barra is in the game. Here's the pitch. Fouled off, out of play.
- 3:11:12Alexander's been used as a pinch runner. Well, Lee Lacey is available. If Barra can reach.
- 3:11:20Final interference called against their catcher, Gary Carter. So, a war at Dale Barra, first base.
- 3:11:29Does not count as a time of bat interference called on the catcher, Kiter.
- 3:11:33So, the tying run is on and Lee Lacey will be the pinch hitter for Takovey.
- 3:11:41Error on the catcher, too, right?
- 3:11:44Hit batsman E2 on the plate, it completed. It is their first error.
- 3:11:50And a ball low outside to Lacey.
- 3:11:55So, we need an error on the board for the Montreal Expos, and there it goes.
- 3:12:04Hutton came in to say something to Sosa.
- 3:12:07Lee Lacey, who was a pinch hitter deluxe for the Dodgers last year, trying to deliver in his first trip as a pirate.
- 3:12:13Swings, and he misses strike one.
- 3:12:18If the Bucks can't get it back, it would be a tough one for Tic-a-Luz. He was throwing very well here today.
- 3:12:24But he hit one man, and that cost him because a couple of errors followed, and Montreal went in front 3-2.
- 3:12:29Pop foul back to the right side, and they've got Lacey in a hole, 0-2.
- 3:12:42Lacey batting in the top spot because that's where Takovey was inserted.
- 3:12:47No balls, two strikes. Barrett first base two away the pitch.
- 3:12:51Swings, and he misses, and the ball game is over.
- 3:12:56So, Sosa came on and did a job for them.
- 3:13:01No runs, no hits, no errors, hit bats make it one error, one error, one man left.
- 3:13:06Final score at X-Trivings on opening day at Three Rivers. Montreal X-Pos 3, the Pirates 2.

- 3:14:14Well, a tough way to lose on opening day. We had good enough pitching to win this thing, but shaky in the air, the department was 5.
- 3:14:32The first three didn't hurt, but the last two did. Expos took advantage of that and attempted to score an unearned run and win it 3-2.
- 3:14:40They had a homer from Keiter in the fifth. They led 2-0 in the middle of the fifth. Ed Otz's homer cut it in half.
- 3:14:47The Pirates tied in the eighth inning when Moreno's speed enabled him to beat one out. That got Geiter home to tie it.
- 3:14:53Went to extra innings. That's when the Expos scored the unearned run. And here are the totals.
- 3:14:58For the Expos, 3-5-1, they strand a winner Sosa in relief. He had followed Rodgers.
- 3:15:06For the Bucks, 2-10-5 with five left. Loser and a tough one for Zakoby.
- 3:15:11Home runs Keiter and Otz. Time of the game, three hours and two minutes. No winning RBI.
- 3:15:17So, 0-1-1 after one. Extra innings to do it. Now tomorrow it will be up to Don Robinson to try to get a seal in.
- 3:15:23He'll be going against Grimsley in game two of the three-game set. Game time tomorrow at 2.15. Broadcast time for the warm-up is 2 o'clock.

- 3:16:03The hitting for the Bucks today, DeBarris had a couple, Moreno two, Starjowl had two, Ott two, Giner one, and Blylevin one.
- 3:16:12For a total of ten hits. But they just weren't able to do it. And they lose the opener in ten innings to Montreal, 3-2.
- 3:16:21Remember now, the ball game tomorrow will be on the air at 2 o'clock for the warm-up.
- 3:16:29And then it will be Don Robinson against Ross Ridley.
- 3:16:32Final score in this one in ten innings, Montreal Expo 3, Pittsburgh Pirates 2.

- 3:18:43Hello once again from Three Rivers Stadium. Lanny Frateri with you for our Pirate Post Game Show, opening day 1979.
- 3:19:00A lot of excitement, the ball game went into extra innings, and then as the game came to a close, Montreal picked up an unearned run on the 10th inning.
- 3:19:08The Expos won it 3-2. A couple of home runs, Gary Carter had one for Montreal, and Ed Ott had a home run for the Bucks.
- 3:19:15And Ed Ott is with us on the Post Game Show. Pirate catcher had two hits, solo home run on the 5th inning, and then a single on the 7th.
- 3:19:22Ed, first of all, we were asking up there in the booth a little bit about Bird Blylevin. Looked like he was pitching well, how did he look out there?
- 3:19:30Well, Bird was throwing the ball very well. He made a lot of great pitches when he had to make them.
- 3:19:34At one inning they got two runs off of him, and he got the ball up the whole inning. Gary Carter hit a fast ball that was up a little bit,
- 3:19:39and then they got a couple base hits off the ball that was up. But except that one inning, he threw a great ball game.
- 3:19:44I thought after Stennett made the fine plays in the 5th, Ed, that we might escape with just one run. What about the pitch to Dawson that he got the base hit on?
- 3:19:51Well, Andrei got the ball up again. I wanted the ball tight inside. He threw it about down the middle of the plate, and he got the base hit.
- 3:19:57Ed, what was it like playing out there in the sunshine today?
- 3:20:00Well, sunshine, that was about it. It was very cold. The wind was blowing, and the papers on the field had a lot to do with it,
- 3:20:06because it disturbed your vision as far as watching the pitcher and trying to pick up the ball. It bothered you a little bit.
- 3:20:11But it was chilly, but like everything else, both teams had a play in it.
- 3:20:15Did players complain about any stings in hitting balls today?
- 3:20:18Well, they didn't complain about any stings. It was more or less like when they got the ball, the throws and everything, as far as the infielders,
- 3:20:23because their hands got too cold. They had a rough time feeling the ball.
- 3:20:27Ed, your home runoff, Steve Rogers, came on an 0-1 pitch.
- 3:20:30Right. Steve made just a little bit of a mistake with the changeup and got the ball up a little bit, and I got it up in that wind and carried over the fence for me.
- 3:20:37At this point, a couple hits today, are you pleased with where you are at the start of the season?
- 3:20:42I'm very pleased. I feel very comfortable. The last two times up, the first time up, I was just a little bit tense, and I over swung a couple times and popped the ball up.
- 3:20:49But the last couple times up, I felt very good, and behind the plate, I felt very good.
- 3:20:52Okay. Ed, thanks for your insightful comments, and appreciate you being on the show with us.
- 3:20:56Lanny, thank you very much.
- 3:20:57Ed, on our guest on the postgame show, then we'll have more from Three Rivers Stadium.
- 3:21:01Tell you a little bit about today's ballgame, and we'll check out the scores down the scoreboard right after this timeout.

- 3:22:06One other game this afternoon in Major League Baseball, and it's in the American League.
- 3:22:10The Chicago White Sox got two runs in the top of the second against Jim Palmer and the Baltimore Orioles.
- 3:22:15They take a 2-0 lead. The Orioles came back with three in the bottom of the second against Chicago's starter Ken Krevick, and Baltimore's added one more in the bottom of the fifth.
- 3:22:23So it's now the Orioles four and the White Sox two after five innings of play.
- 3:22:27The other game scheduled for this afternoon, Texas at Detroit, canceled due to inclement weather.
- 3:22:31So still unable to get the American League season underway in Detroit.
- 3:22:35Tonight in the American League, Minnesota's at Oakland, Dave Goltz against Rick Langford.
- 3:22:39California will be at Seattle, Nolan Ryan, 10-13 last year. Jim Ferdowsi's ball club against Seattle, and they're starting pitcher McLaughlin.
- 3:22:48National League tonight, the San Francisco Giants will take on the Cincinnati Reds in game two of their series.
- 3:22:53The Giants beat the Reds, you'll recall, on Wednesday in the National League opener.
- 3:22:57Don Manufusco going for the Giants in the game tonight, and Tom Hume, 8-11 last year for the Reds, pitching tonight for Cincinnati.
- 3:23:04Philadelphia will be at St. Louis as the Eastern Division champion, Phil, is open against the Cardinals' Inbush Stadium.
- 3:23:10Steve Carlton, 16-13 last year, against John Denny, 14-11 of a season ago.
- 3:23:16The Atlanta Braves will open in Houston. James Rodney Richard, an 18-game winner, will pitch for the Astros.
- 3:23:21Against the visiting Atlanta Braves, Phil Necro, a 19-game winner last year, will go for the Braves.
- 3:23:26And San Diego will be in Los Angeles, Randy Jones against Don Sutton.
- 3:23:30Jones, 13-14 last year, Don Sutton, 15-11.
- 3:23:35So that's how things look on the scoreboard this day.
- 3:23:38Here this afternoon at the Three Rivers Stadium, opening day, the Expos scored a run on the 10th inning to beat the Bucs 3-2.
- 3:23:44We'll check the totals right after this message.

- 3:24:46Ball game this afternoon. Bart Blylevin and Steve Rogers were battling head-to-head, and the Expos got on the board first.
- 3:24:53The Expos had only one hit through the first four innings against Blylevin, but then Gary Carter led off the top of the fifth.
- 3:24:59With a solo home run over the wall in left field, Carter jumping on a Blylevin 2-1 pitch.
- 3:25:04Larry Parrish then singled, and after Spire and Rogers were retired on fine defensive plays by Ronnie Stenett,
- 3:25:11Andre Dawson delivered with a two-out single to left field. The Dawson single driving home Parrish and giving Montreal a 2-0 lead.
- 3:25:19Bottom of the fifth thing, Ed Ott got the Pirates on the board, 0-1 pitch. The Otter hit the home run to right center field and brought us back to within one.
- 3:25:27And then in the bottom of the eighth thing, against Steve Rogers, Phil Garner led off with a double, moved to third with Mike Eastler in a ground ball to the right side.
- 3:25:36And then Omar Moreno beat out an infield single, a high bouncing ball up the middle. Spire went up on a second base bag, but his throw to first was not in time to get the antelope.
- 3:25:45And the RBI single for Omar Moreno tied the game at 2-2. Then Montreal, in the tenth inning against reliever Kent Toccovi, Andre Dawson reached on a hit batsman.
- 3:25:54He went to second base when Stardewald was unable to handle the Toccovi throw, and the arrow was charged on Stardewald.
- 3:26:01But then after Toccovi got Scott to strike out and Cro Marty to bounce out, Ellis Valentine hit a ground ball. Dale Barra had trouble with it.
- 3:26:09The arrow was charged on the Pirate third baseman Dawson scored, and that proved to be the winning run for Montreal. The Expos winning it by a score of 3-2.
- 3:26:18Frank Taveras had a couple of hits for the Pirates today. He was 2-3. Omar Moreno was 2-3 with a run batted in. He drove in that second run.
- 3:26:26Ed Stardewald had two hits. Ed Ott, who was our guest on the post game show, he had a couple of hits including a home run and a single.
- 3:26:32Phil Garner had a double in a run scored today. So that's how the Pirates looked offensively.
- 3:26:36Bert Blylevin, the starter, worked seven innings, gave up two runs. Enrique Romo worked one inning and did not give up a run.
- 3:26:42Toccovi worked two innings. The run that Teague gave up was unearned.
- 3:26:473-2 Montreal over the Bucks, and that's the final score in the ball game this afternoon.
- 3:26:52Looking at the score sheet, that takes care of most of the notes here this afternoon.
- 3:26:56Comment also that the umpire situation, the umpires today, Dave Pallone, who was the home plate umpire,
- 3:27:03been in the International League last couple of years, recently signed to a National League contract,
- 3:27:07and a couple of other guys, one guy from Rhode Island, two people from the Pittsburgh area,
- 3:27:11working in place of the National League umpires who are still out.
- 3:27:153-2, the final score of Montreal Expos taking the opening game of this weekend series, opening day, Three Rivers.
- 3:27:21The final number is the Expos, three runs, five hits, and one error.
- 3:27:26The Bucks, two runs, ten hits, five errors.
- 3:27:29Elias Sosa, the winner, 1-0. Toccovi, the loser, 0-1. There was no game-winning RBI.
- 3:27:35The attendance on opening day, 36,141.
- 3:27:40Some of our postgame pirates receive a $25 gift certificate from Chatham Sports Center,
- 3:27:46Pittsburgh's department store of sports, and it's nice to have the folks from Chatham back with us, Gene Neufeld and company.
- 3:27:52And our thanks to Ed Ott for being with us today, our thanks to Steve Greenberg for his assistance.
- 3:27:56Final score, in ten innings, Montreal 3 and the Pirates 2.
- 3:28:01I'm Lanny Fraterry, bidding you a very pleasant good afternoon on the Pirates Baseball Network.
