- 0:043 balls, 2 strikes, 2 outs and they pick up the percentage.
- 0:07Now Paul Blair will be off as soon as Welsh starts to the
- 0:11plate. Quite possible he could score on
- 0:13that long single percentage to go to three and two and the
- 0:17swings to the Yankees and Jackson makes the get way.
- 0:21Then second Blair at first, two outs.
- 0:41There they go. This is possibly live the
- 0:52official podcast of The Dave Bowman Show.
- 0:55Where I grew up in Colorado, we didn't really have much of a
- 1:00baseball tradition. We had the Denver Bears, but
- 1:06they were AAA team, and for the life of me I couldn't even tell
- 1:13you what Major League team they were the minor league team for.
- 1:17No idea. But in October of 1978, I fell
- 1:25in love with the Los Angeles Dodge.
- 1:28Now, at the time in 1978, there were a lot of Yankee fans, lots
- 1:35of everywhere you turned, everybody was wearing a Yankee
- 1:38hat. They all loved the Yankees.
- 1:43But loving the Yankees meant loving Reggie Jackson.
- 1:46And for whatever reason, and I don't know what it was, but back
- 1:50then I loved to hate Reggie Jackson.
- 1:55Now that is not the case. Today I don't feel that way
- 1:57anymore. But at the time I despised
- 2:02Reggie Jackson. And the year before 1977, which
- 2:07I had not watched in the World Series, he had destroyed the
- 2:11Dodgers. Most of you are familiar with
- 2:12this, the the three home run game, three home runs, three
- 2:15swings. And maybe that's why I hated
- 2:18him. I don't know.
- 2:18He just the whole Reggie Bar thing, the straw that stirred
- 2:23the drink, all of those things added up.
- 2:28But in 1978, the Dodgers, back against the Yankees again, had a
- 2:35young pitcher by the name of Bob Welch who would go on to great
- 2:38fame later on, particularly with the Oakland A's.
- 2:42And at the time, he was a reliever.
- 2:44Later on, he would become a starter.
- 2:47But at the time, he was a relief pitcher.
- 2:49And he came in, in the 9th inning of Game 2, four to two
- 2:52Dodgers bases. I think there were two on, two
- 2:57out. And here's Reggie Jackson
- 2:58against Bob Welch. And it was 5 minutes of why
- 3:03baseball is so dramatic this young.
- 3:09It was, it was like right out of the script of The Natural.
- 3:12I mean, you can, if you watch the movie The Natural and you
- 3:16watch this at bat, the announcers, it's, it's almost
- 3:20there. It's like they're reading the
- 3:21script for the Natural, the young fireballer, the the
- 3:25grizzled old power hitting veteran.
- 3:28I mean, it's the same thing. And so Bob Welch strikes out the
- 3:35guy that I hate the most, Reggie Jackson.
- 3:38Again, I don't feel that way about him anymore.
- 3:40But at the time I did strikes out Reggie Jackson.
- 3:44And that is the literally the moment that I became a Dodger
- 3:48fan. My best friend Charlie was a die
- 3:53hard Yankee fan. And of course, you know, the
- 3:58next morning it was all me up in his face about Bob Welch
- 4:02striking out Reggie Jackson. Well, he got the last laugh
- 4:04because the Dodgers lost four straight and ultimately the
- 4:08World Series. What I hadn't realized at the
- 4:12time though, was that my Dodgerism was going to become a
- 4:16source of great joy and great pain. 79 was not a great season.
- 4:221980 came down to, if you remember the the last day of the
- 4:26season, the Dodgers had to win a game to tie the Astros.
- 4:30And back then they didn't have wild cards and all that stuff.
- 4:32So they had this one game playoff and the one game playoff
- 4:37against the Astros was at the same time that I was in the
- 4:41dentist chair. I was having some, I wouldn't
- 4:44call it major surgery, but I had an impacted cuspid that had to
- 4:48be removed. And so that was the day they did
- 4:52it. And the dentist handed me a pair
- 4:55of 19791980 ERA headphones and said, what do you, what kind of
- 4:59music do you want to listen to? Said I want to listen to music,
- 5:02I want to listen to the game. And it was the only time in my
- 5:06life that what I was listening to was more painful than what
- 5:08was going on in the dentist chair as the Dodgers just
- 5:11absolutely collapsed in that game.
- 5:13And there you go. But by 1981, things were
- 5:16different. And in May of that year, I
- 5:21joined the Navy. May 28th, 1981 and joined the
- 5:24Navy. And by that point, Fernando
- 5:27Mania had exploded. He was going crazy.
- 5:31My favorite Dodger of all time, Mike Socia had had made the
- 5:35majors and he was catching Fernando and Bert Hooton and
- 5:41Jerry Royce. It was exciting, but it was all
- 5:46overshadowed by this looming strike man, it was fun.
- 5:51And that was that was the first year.
- 5:53And this is, you know, this is before ESPN folks.
- 5:56This is before, you know, TV packages and MLB.TV.
- 6:03The only time you got to see the Dodgers was on maybe on a
- 6:05Saturday, maybe on a Monday night if they were doing Monday
- 6:08Night baseball. I don't remember that.
- 6:11But you, you read the Sporting News, you read the paper the
- 6:14next morning. You read all of these things.
- 6:16And of course, living in at the time, Utah, we were, we were
- 6:21able to get this occasionally you could get the ball game if
- 6:25it was, especially if they were in Cincinnati, you could, you
- 6:27could pick up the game because you could get that radio station
- 6:30out of Cincinnati. It was going so well.
- 6:33And then that strike just murdered everything.
- 6:37It wrecked everything. Eventually they get it
- 6:40restarted. I'm getting ready to go in the
- 6:42Navy. The second-half of the season is
- 6:43anticlimactic because the way that things were set up, the
- 6:45first half winners weren't playing for anything.
- 6:48There was nothing to play for. And by the way, if you're a
- 6:51Saint Louis Cardinals fan or a Cincinnati Reds fan, stop
- 6:54bitching #1 it's been, you know, 40 some odd years and and #2 you
- 7:00knew the rules going in, so stop bitching.
- 7:04But an amazing thing happened to those play UPS in late
- 7:08September. The Dodgers are down to the
- 7:12Astros in early October, I guess down to the Astros in the NLDS,
- 7:162 to nothing, down two games to none.
- 7:19And I was thinking to myself, here we go again, freaking
- 7:21Astros. Fernando came on to pitch game
- 7:25four and the Dodgers end up coming back to win that series
- 7:29three games to two. And it's this comeback, this
- 7:32idea that we don't give up, don't surrender, never, never
- 7:36give up, never surrender. That it just appealed to me.
- 7:38And then the in the middle of the NLCS against Montreal, I go
- 7:42to basic training, so I miss. In fact, I went to basic
- 7:45training the day of Game 1. So I missed games 123 and four.
- 7:49Of course, the Dodgers are down two games to one, but they come
- 7:52back again now Game 5, which is the penult is, is the ultimate
- 7:55game here. I hadn't been assigned to a
- 7:58company yet, so I was just armed out to clean offices and do busy
- 8:03work. And I happened to be in an
- 8:06office with a chief Petty Officer who was Hispanic,
- 8:10Mexican and who loved the Dodgers.
- 8:14And he found out that I love the Dodgers.
- 8:16And so we actually, instead of pretending to work, we sat in
- 8:19his office and listened to Game 5 on the radio.
- 8:22And when Rick Mundy hit his home run to win the world, to win the
- 8:25National League Championship Series was incredible.
- 8:29Then I got assigned to a company and I've never to this day have
- 8:34I seen a pitch or a single play of the 1981 World Series.
- 8:40Everything I saw, heard about the 1981 World Series, I got
- 8:45second hand. You know, you're going around to
- 8:48these appointments and stuff and you're, you're getting all your
- 8:50medical stuff taken care of and boot camp and, and you're asking
- 8:53people what happened, what happened?
- 8:54And they're telling on October 26th, 1981, I was in the dentist
- 9:00chair, had two small cavities that needed to be filled,
- 9:04nothing big. And I asked the dentist what
- 9:08happened? What, how's the World Series
- 9:11going? And he said, and I quote, those
- 9:14damn Dodgers won again last night.
- 9:16Now they're up three games to 2. And I humped my fist and went
- 9:23and he looked at me and said, and I quote, oh, Dodger fan,
- 9:27huh? No novocaine for you.
- 9:32Now in my head of heads, I know he was joking.
- 9:36I, I know he was joking because I got the shots.
- 9:38I, I, I, I, I know that. But somehow or another that got
- 9:44in my head. And to this day, even last
- 9:49April, it still causes me dental PTSD.
- 9:56It was the most pain. It was one of the most painful
- 9:58things I ever went through. And then last April, I'm in the
- 10:02chair again, Again, a minor cavity, and I am going into a
- 10:08meltdown. I am literally having to tell
- 10:11myself to calm down. And it all traces back to that
- 10:14moment. But the Dodgers won.
- 10:18Then, of course, a night later, they would win the World Series.
- 10:21I wouldn't find out till the next day.
- 10:24And I've never seen it. I've, I, I have the tape, I have
- 10:27the, the film vintage World Series films of the Los Angeles
- 10:32Dodgers winning stuff. And it's 59636581 and 88.
- 10:36Of course it doesn't have the 2021 there, but I, I've never
- 10:40watched the 1981 one. And there's a reason for that,
- 10:44but it's there. It's served as my motivation.
- 10:49Boot camp was I, you know, I talk a lot about how much I love
- 10:52the Navy. Boot camp was not fun, nor was
- 10:54it easy. I was barely 18 years old, from
- 10:58a very sheltered family and a very religious family.
- 11:03I was hearing, learning, seeing things that I, jeez, never even
- 11:09imagined that people could talk like that.
- 11:14It was difficult and physically it was difficult.
- 11:19And yet what kept driving me forward was, hey, the Dodgers
- 11:23came back on the Astros, the Dodgers came back on the Expos,
- 11:25the Dodgers came back on the Yankees.
- 11:27If they can do it, I can do it. And I'm not kidding when I say
- 11:31to you that they were my motivation for getting through
- 11:33basic training. The Los Angeles Dodgers, the
- 11:361981 Dodgers, Fernando Socia Sachs, Davey Lopes and Ron Say
- 11:43got me through basic training and they're hold a very, very
- 11:50important place in my heart, especially Fernanda, who we lost
- 11:56this past week. 1988 was a great year.
- 12:01It was fun, it was exciting. My boss was was also a hardcore
- 12:07Dodger fan. And the thing about that year
- 12:10was that a lot of the games were afternoons, especially those
- 12:13games against the Mets. And he would give me afternoons
- 12:16offs to go to go home and watch the games.
- 12:19And it was great. And when Kurt Gibson hit his
- 12:22home run in game one, Oh my gosh.
- 12:25Now remember, I'm in the Eastern Time zone now.
- 12:26So this was very late at night. My, my neighbors ended up
- 12:30calling the cops because they thought I was being attacked.
- 12:34Since then, though, it's been kind of a dry spell.
- 12:37And even with the 2020 World Series, when I was not able to
- 12:44watch it, something happened between 1999 and then and I just
- 12:49wasn't able to watch Dodger playoff baseball.
- 12:53I watch a regular season game no problem.
- 12:56Playoff baseball find myself getting really worked up and
- 12:59really tense. And I just, I finally had to
- 13:02stay just can't watch it. I can check in later, but and of
- 13:08course, checking in later, the exception of 2020 was a problem
- 13:12that the 2021 World Series, I would, I would click in, click
- 13:16out, click in, click out. 2016, I think I watched several of the
- 13:20playoff games against the Cubs because half the lawyer and I
- 13:23would would watch those together because he's a big Cubs fan.
- 13:28But in 2012, something remarkable happened. 2012, I was
- 13:33working for the radio station and one of my collateral duties
- 13:35was, of course, I was the technical producer for the
- 13:38Stockton Ports. Ports were supposed to have Jose
- 13:42Canseco come visit, did an interview with him, talked about
- 13:45this in the past. When I got done with the
- 13:48interview, I called up the the promotions manager at the ports.
- 13:52I said, I hope you got an alternate plan because he ain't
- 13:54coming. What how do you know?
- 13:58So just trust me, he's not going to be there.
- 14:01And the next day they announced that Steve Garvey would be there
- 14:04and that it was pretty exciting to me because Steve Garvey, of
- 14:06course, one of my World Series heroes from 81.
- 14:10And one of the things about this was because I was part of the
- 14:13broadcast team, not on the air, but, you know, Zach got to have
- 14:18him for an entire inning. And as he was waiting to go on
- 14:22with Zach between the innings, I got a chance to talk to him.
- 14:26So here I am standing here with Steve Garvey, my hero, one of my
- 14:30heroes. And I said to him, I got to tell
- 14:33you this story. I won't bore you with all the
- 14:37details. And I told him the story of 1981
- 14:41and me getting through basic training because of the Dodgers
- 14:43and how the Dodgers inspired me and how every time I felt like
- 14:47quitting, I'd just say, you know what?
- 14:49The Dodgers didn't quit. When I got done with this story,
- 14:54it probably took a couple of minutes.
- 14:57He looked at me, Steve Garvey looked at me, put his hand on my
- 15:00shoulder and sat, quote, ain't baseball great, UN quote.
- 15:09Now, I don't know that anybody's ever said anything so profound
- 15:11to me in my life. I really don't It's become kind
- 15:14of my mantra when when things get a little, I just remind
- 15:20myself, hey, ain't ain't ain't baseball great.
- 15:25This past week the Dodgers Fernando passed away after
- 15:30battling liver cancer was unexpected.
- 15:34I don't think anybody knew that this was coming, but it's still
- 15:38still kind of a gut punch. And tonight, for the first time
- 15:42in what, 42 years, 41 years, we get a Dodgers, Yankees, World
- 15:49Series. Something else remarkable
- 15:52happened this year, and that is that for for the first time
- 15:55since 1989, I was able to watch Dodger baseball during the
- 16:00playoffs without panicking myself.
- 16:02I don't, I don't know what changed.
- 16:04Something clicked and I just said to myself, you know what?
- 16:06I'm just going to enjoy it this year.
- 16:07I'm not going to get upset. I'm not going to get worked up.
- 16:10If we lose, it doesn't matter if we win, you know, yay, but it
- 16:15isn't the bend, the end of the world if we don't.
- 16:17And I and I was able to relax and enjoy it.
- 16:19And of course the Padres series was great when we came back and
- 16:25and the Mets series was equally as good.
- 16:28And I I kind of like the Mets too.
- 16:30So the whole Mets story this year was fantastic.
- 16:33Them and the Tigers were just they were worth watching and I
- 16:39was excited. I wasn't necessarily pulling for
- 16:41the Yankees on the American League side, but you know,
- 16:45there's something about a Dodgers Yankees World Series.
- 16:47This will be the 12th time they've met in World Series
- 16:49history. And of course the Yankees have
- 16:52the upper hand in that. But hopefully not this year.
- 16:58Just like 1981, we not this year.
- 17:02But it doesn't really matter. I'm going to enjoy it and I'm
- 17:04going to tape them and I'm going to watch.
- 17:08And maybe when the whole thing's done, maybe I'll watch that
- 17:121981. I have all six games of that
- 17:14series on tape, by the way, video I've, I've long ago
- 17:18converted them to MP4 format and I don't know, maybe I'll watch
- 17:23them, maybe I won't. Because for me, I don't need to
- 17:28see it. I listened to Steve Garvey that
- 17:31night in 2012 as Zach asked him, and I think Zach asked him for
- 17:35me to describe the final out of that series.
- 17:40And he did it so vividly and so word picturish that I could just
- 17:47close my eyes and see what was happening on the field.
- 17:50I didn't need to watch the video like I have it in my head from
- 17:53that, Fernando's gone. All of those players have moved
- 17:59on. Many of them have passed away.
- 18:01Tommy Lasorda has passed away. It's it's still a huge part of
- 18:06who I am. I know it doesn't make any sense
- 18:09to you, and I get that, but you need to understand that to me,
- 18:15that 1981 Dodger series, season and series are inspirational on
- 18:24a level that I can't. I can't say that there's a whole
- 18:28lot else in my life. I know there are other things
- 18:30that have inspired me. I can't say there's anything
- 18:32that has inspired me as much as that 1981 series did that that
- 18:37whole season for me. The 81 Dodgers will always be
- 18:42the greatest team ever. They may not have won as many
- 18:45games, they may not have hit as many home runs.
- 18:47They may not have been as exciting.
- 18:49I don't know. I don't know how you can say
- 18:51that about any team with Fernando Valenzuela on it, but
- 18:55they are my Talisman. And yet at the same time, there
- 19:01was bad that came out of it because of that dentist thing,
- 19:04which to this day, 40 plus years later, I still have.
- 19:11I, I'm embarrassed to say it, I almost had a mental breakdown at
- 19:16the dentist because I, I felt the same things again.
- 19:22So it is something that matters to me.
- 19:26It's something that I carry with me every day.
- 19:29I'm not a I'm not one of those obnoxious Dodger fans.
- 19:32I don't, you know, I'm not always talking about the
- 19:34Dodgers, but and I like the Mariner.
- 19:37They love the Mariners, but they suck.
- 19:40I think I just love them because they suck so bad.
- 19:42But but for me, the Dodgers are my team.
- 19:46And I can tell you that tonight I will be watching first Dodger
- 19:51Yankee World Series game since 1981, and I'll be doing it with
- 19:56joy. I'll have food, I'll have a
- 19:58drink, and I will just enjoy myself.
- 20:01Because no matter what happens, no matter how this thing goes,
- 20:05no matter what happens in my life tomorrow, no matter what
- 20:07happens the next time at the dentist, no matter what ends up
- 20:11happening with the V8, no matter what, I'll always have that
- 20:15moment and I'll always have those words.
- 20:20Ain't baseball great the game right now?
- 20:22Does that look like high fly on the right field?
- 20:30She is gone.
- 20:43In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has
- 20:48happened.
