Ep. 321 - How to Practically Glorify God in Your Life · The Living Waters Podcast

• 1:04
Speaker 1: Friends, listen, here's why repentance radically glorifies God.
• 1:07
Speaker 1: Again, we always go back to the roots.
• 1:09
Speaker 1: It's easy to just look at what's on the surface level.
• 1:11
Speaker 1: Go back to the root.
• 1:12
Speaker 1: Why does that glorify God?
• 1:14
Speaker 1: Well, when someone is repenting, what they're implying is that there is room for forgiveness, that there is potential for change, that there is now the wherewithal to be able to forsake what you're doing.
• 1:27
Speaker 1: Well, how is that made possible?
• 1:30
Speaker 1: Through what Jesus did, the fact that Christ died upon the cross and shed his blood for our sins.
• 1:37
  Speaker 1: In him.
• 1:38
Speaker 1: Now we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, we can now repent.
• 1:43
Speaker 1: So what are we doing when we repent?
• 1:44
Speaker 1: We're lifting Christ up, like Moses did with the serpent in the wilderness, so that he could draw all men unto himself.
• 1:48
Speaker 1: So when you repent, you're lifting Christ up, like Moses did with the serpent in the wilderness, so that he could draw all men unto himself.
• 1:51
Speaker 1: So when you repent, you're glorifying God, because you're saying God, what you did was valid, what Christ did on the cross was a work that carries with it significance and it's real.
• 2:04
Speaker 1: And now I'm going to give to you what you've called me to give, and that is my brokenness and my repentance.
• 2:12
Speaker 1: And now I'm walking in a way that's causing what you did to function in a practical way.
• 2:18
Speaker 1: You died and gave your life upon that cross and rose again so that I can have forgiveness of sins.
• 2:23
Speaker 1: As I repent, lord, I lift up what you did.
• 2:26
Speaker 1: I herald in essence, when I'm repenting, right, oscar, I am really in essence when I'm repenting, right Oscar.
• 2:31
Speaker 1: I am really, in other words, displaying the gospel Amen.
• 2:34
Speaker 1: Let us all stare intently at Ray.
• 2:42
Speaker 1: Now and here we go.
• 2:44
  Speaker 1: Happy birthday.
• 2:47
  Speaker 3: No, I won't do that.
• 2:48
Speaker 3: You won't do that.
• 2:49
Speaker 3: Yeah, Thank you so much.
• 2:51
Speaker 1: You know Frambs, one of the worst things you could ever do to me besides take all the taboo from the planet is sing happy birthday to me.
• 3:01
Speaker 3: Ray, you hate it too.
• 3:01
Speaker 3: I hate it too.
• 3:02
Speaker 3: Seriously, we've got a lot in common.
• 3:04
  Speaker 1: Well, it's weird.
• 3:05
  Speaker 3: Well, it's weird.
• 3:05
Speaker 1: You're basically worshipping someone.
• 3:08
Speaker 1: You're looking at someone.
• 3:10
Speaker 1: Oscar likes that idea.
• 3:12
Speaker 3: It's not even your birthday.
• 3:13
Speaker 3: You only have one birthday, and then everyone sings every year after that.
• 3:17
Speaker 2: I'm not sure you're legally allowed to sing it even.
• 3:19
Speaker 3: Oh, that's right, it's copyright oh wait.
• 3:21
Speaker 1: No, I think that's expired now.
• 3:23
Speaker 1: Yeah, because I would always wonder why do restaurants have?
• 3:27
  Speaker 2: different versions.
• 3:28
Speaker 2: Yeah, because they're skittigings.
• 3:28
Speaker 2: We'd seen the short version of it.
• 3:29
Speaker 2: When I worked at a restaurant, all we did was get down on our knees.
• 3:31
Speaker 2: I level with you.
• 3:34
  Speaker 3: The short version.
• 3:34
  Speaker 3: Thank you, Mark.
• 3:36
Speaker 4: For those who haven't caught on, today is Ray's birthday and Ray, did you get taller?
• 3:41
Speaker 2: Did you look at?
• 3:41
Speaker 4: me, did you wake?
• 3:42
Speaker 2: up a little bit taller this morning.
• 3:44
  Speaker 2: Yes, I did, you're shrinking.
• 3:45
  Speaker 1: Oscar.
• 3:45
  Speaker 1: That's what's happening.
• 3:46
  Speaker 3: I had a near-death experience this week.
• 3:49
  Speaker 1: Did you?
• 3:50
Speaker 3: Again, yeah it was very, very close.
• 3:51
Speaker 3: I drove my car in the parking lot and I couldn't open the door.
• 3:55
Speaker 3: And I pushed it and I looked up to see why it wouldn't open and Oscar's face was right in the window and I got such a fright.
• 4:03
Speaker 4: Oh, that is terrifying.
• 4:04
Speaker 3: Almost jumped through the roof, yeah so what I did is, when he left to go to have lunch with someone, I put a book on top of his door, closed the door closed and put an envelope at the base of the door so he would look down as he went to open the door.
• 4:16
Speaker 4: Did it work, did it work, poor Marianne got hit in the head with the book oh Ray.
• 4:22
Speaker 1: No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
• 4:23
Speaker 1: We're going to get by our employees.
• 4:24
Speaker 1: Ray's done this for years.
• 4:25
Speaker 1: To me, I've done it for years.
• 4:27
Speaker 3: But Oscar did get duped because I heard Sue, heard him say nice, try Ray.
• 4:34
Speaker 1: So, ray, what have you learned in the past 115 years?
• 4:37
Speaker 3: I put it all into a book called 50 Years of Open Air Preaching Everything I've Learned.
• 4:42
  Speaker 2: It's my legacy.
• 4:44
Speaker 3: It's my last words Love it, open air.
• 4:46
Speaker 3: It's my last words, love it, hopefully not Open air.
• 4:47
  Speaker 3: Yes.
• 4:47
Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, ray, I just realized something for the first time today.
• 4:50
Speaker 1: Remember, not long ago, rachel said she finally discovered after many, many years, that the word ache is right in the middle of her name R-A-C-H-E.
• 4:59
  Speaker 1: I don't know.
• 5:00
Speaker 1: I just discovered today that your name is right there in the word crazy.
• 5:07
Speaker 3: Did you ever notice that?
• 5:08
Speaker 3: Yeah, you didn't notice that?
• 5:09
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's in the middle of prayer too, yeah.
• 5:12
Speaker 1: More crazy, that works better Crazy, All right friends.
• 5:17
Speaker 1: Oh listen who just confirmed his own craziness.
• 5:19
Speaker 3: Here we are again.
• 5:22
Speaker 1: Ray, but how does it feel to be?
• 5:24
Speaker 3: Just the same I feel the same as the moment I was born, I feel exactly the same as that Same size too Some things never change.
• 5:34
Speaker 3: Oh, that's funny I used to get changed a lot by my mom.
• 5:37
Speaker 3: Yes, diapers, you're accepting gifts for your birthday.
• 5:41
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, post birthday gifts Anytime.
• 5:43
Speaker 3: Just park in the parking lot.
• 5:44
Speaker 1: Park there, put him in the hangar.
• 5:47
Speaker 2: He's registered at Wells.
• 5:48
  Speaker 4: Fargo.
• 5:48
Speaker 4: Yeah, how hard was it to turn that carpet into a t-shirt.
• 5:52
  Speaker 1: Isn't it nice?
• 5:53
Speaker 1: Oh, you're talking about fashion, oscar.
• 5:56
Speaker 1: Let's not get going on that, I have no problem.
• 5:57
  Speaker 3: Nice jacket.
• 5:58
Speaker 3: Do they make them for men?
• 5:59
  Speaker 1: They do yeah.
• 6:00
Speaker 2: Yeah really good, they were you know, it's true, I went to a department store with my wife, laura, and I was trying on different things.
• 6:10
Speaker 2: She brought me something and I put it on.
• 6:12
Speaker 2: I go, this is like really tight and the sales clerk's looking in at it and just like that's a woman's.
• 6:21
Speaker 3: This is California man.
• 6:22
  Speaker 1: That's a story of Ray's life.
• 6:23
Speaker 3: Is that what they said to you?
• 6:26
Speaker 2: Just keep it quiet.
• 6:27
Speaker 2: No, I came to that realization on my own.
• 6:28
Speaker 2: Ray still shops that gap for kids.
• 6:30
  Speaker 4: She laughed.
• 6:31
Speaker 3: I go in there to stand in the gap.
• 6:33
  Speaker 3: You know that.
• 6:34
Speaker 1: All right time for a cool, classy comment.
• 6:36
Speaker 1: My name is Emily and I've been listening to the podcast for a couple of years.
• 6:40
Speaker 1: I've had a lot of trying.
• 6:41
Speaker 1: Things happen in that period of time, much of them because of my own lack of wisdom, but God has been faithful to continually turn me back to the truth of his word.
• 6:51
Speaker 1: Any sin in my life is ultimately because I lack the faith to trust God's promises.
• 6:55
  Speaker 1: Wow, that's insightful, isn't it?
• 6:56
Speaker 1: But faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
• 6:59
Speaker 1: Learning to better saturate my mind with the truth of God's word has helped me immensely in my seeking after personal holiness, and listening to y'all on my car rides to work has helped me keep my mind on what is true through those 40 minutes every day about to get longer.
• 7:17
Speaker 1: Ray, I love your passion for knowing and understanding who God is in order to understand our state as sinners in need of the grace of a holy God.
• 7:24
Speaker 1: I have to remind myself of that and preach the truth of the gospel to myself every day.
• 7:28
Speaker 1: Mark, you've got some of the most insightful one-liners I've ever heard from one person, although a lot of times it's something someone once said.
• 7:36
Speaker 1: It's an encouragement to seek wisdom from others God has placed in our lives.
• 7:44
Speaker 1: I love the one about getting the truth into ourselves every day, because we are going to be lied to all day long.
• 7:50
  Speaker 2: That's R Ken Hughes.
• 7:50
Speaker 1: Yeah, as I have found that to be a big struggle for me.
• 7:53
Speaker 1: Oscar, I love your analogies and ways of looking at things I've never thought of before.
• 7:58
Speaker 1: I've even begun trying black coffee, thinking well, if Oscar can taste it, I probably can too, and I have actually been enjoying it, let's go.
• 8:06
Speaker 1: But don't worry, easy, I still like my cream in it sometimes Good and Easy.
• 8:11
Speaker 1: Amidst all the crazy voices wheezing and strange singing, I'm encouraged by your love for the Lord and your desire to encourage others how to fight against sin and pursue righteousness.
• 8:20
Speaker 1: I'm also encouraged by realizing I'm not the only one who's a little crazy sometimes.
• 8:25
Speaker 1: Thank you, guys, for what you do.
• 8:26
Speaker 1: Keep doing it and keep your eyes ever on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.
• 8:31
  Speaker 1: God bless y'all.
• 8:31
  Speaker 1: Emily Janowiak.
• 8:33
  Speaker 3: Y'all.
• 8:34
  Speaker 1: Janowiak, sorry, j-a-n-o-w-i-a-k.
• 8:36
Speaker 3: I had to read your name by Neil Swain.
• 8:38
  Speaker 3: I know Every time I know it's a syndrome.
• 8:42
Speaker 1: Thank you, emily, very encouraging and a huge blessing.
• 8:44
  Speaker 1: Amen, thank you.
• 8:45
Speaker 2: Birthday boy were you going to say something.
• 8:47
Speaker 3: Birthday boy, you grabbed the microphone.
• 8:49
  Speaker 2: I wasn't listening.
• 8:49
Speaker 2: Oh no, Scotty told me I got to grab the microphone regularly, so I just did that.
• 8:53
  Speaker 3: Ah, my man.
• 8:54
Speaker 1: And now a radically revolutionary resource.
• 8:57
Speaker 1: This podcast is brought to you by Jesus in Red Ray how do you say red in Spanish?
• 9:07
Speaker 1: Quick, quick, red-o, pronto, red-o, red-o, rojo, rojo Is it?
• 9:12
Speaker 1: Rojo, says our in-house Mexican friend.
• 9:13
Speaker 1: It's in Spanish, the book too, by the way, rojo Is it.
• 9:15
Speaker 3: Yeah, Jesus is Red is actually in two quotes as well.
• 9:17
  Speaker 1: Oh, it is.
• 9:17
Speaker 1: Jesus is Red is in two quotes.
• 9:19
Speaker 1: So wait, you have a book that actually has a word red and Spanish in it, and you can't even say the word red in Spanish that's right.
• 9:27
Speaker 3: Is it written in a New?
• 9:28
  Speaker 2: Zealand accent.
• 9:29
Speaker 3: Yeah, of course, the whole book is written in a New Zealand accent.
• 9:31
  Speaker 3: Dude like totally.
• 9:33
Speaker 1: So make sure to check it out, friends.
• 9:34
  Speaker 1: Jesus in Red.
• 9:35
Speaker 1: What is it, Ray?
• 9:36
  Speaker 3: What?
• 9:36
  Speaker 3: What's the book?
• 9:37
Speaker 3: What's the book about?
• 9:38
Speaker 3: It's about all the words Jesus said.
• 9:40
Speaker 3: All the words Jesus said without surrounding verses.
• 9:42
Speaker 3: Like Jesus said to Nicodemus you must be born again.
• 9:46
Speaker 3: It just goes straight and you must be born again.
• 9:47
Speaker 3: It takes away the surrounding words so you can concentrate on the words of Jesus.
• 9:51
  Speaker 3: Can you ever?
• 9:51
Speaker 1: get a Bible where the words of Jesus aren't like turquoise or lavender or fuchsia.
• 9:55
Speaker 3: It wouldn't be right That'd be sin, it wouldn't matter.
• 9:59
Speaker 1: All right, friends, don't forget that.
• 10:00
Speaker 1: And the Living Waters Mug and the Evidence Study Bible, oh, and Living TV, oscar, I love Spatlin' Waters TV.

Speaker 3: Can you say friends properly?
• 10:42
  Speaker 1: Friends.
• 10:43
Speaker 3: That's just not right, is it?
• 10:44
Speaker 3: That's pathetic, hey friends.
• 10:45
Speaker 1: Can you imagine, hey friends.
• 10:47
Speaker 1: No, it's not good.
• 10:47

• 10:54
  Speaker 3: Is that original?
• 10:55
  Speaker 2: Matt.
• 10:55
Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not that deep, but I appreciate that?
• 10:57
Speaker 3: Yeah, well, you can also throw the delete button in there too, yeah.
• 11:07
Speaker 1: Well, we're notley and his family, his wife Marcy and their children, ava and Ian, and Jesse and Owen.
• 11:14
  Speaker 1: Let's welcome them.
• 11:16
  Speaker 4: Round of applause.
• 11:17
  Speaker 4: Round of applause.
• 11:19
Speaker 1: I got to Thanks guys Blessed to have you.
• 11:21
  Speaker 4: Yeah, thank you.
• 11:22
Speaker 4: I got to hang out with Doug at a high school retreat and one of my favorite moments is that Doug volunteered himself to play a basketball game with me and he was like I'm warning you, I've never played basketball.
• 11:33
Speaker 4: It must have been the greatest.
• 11:35
Speaker 4: I wish there was a video recording because Doug could not miss, but he was like shocked at himself.
• 11:40
Speaker 4: No, no, no, he didn't school me, did he post-prod.
• 11:43
Speaker 1: Like the pride man yeah yeah, yeah.
• 11:46
Speaker 4: But he was so amazed Every time he threw up what looked like a clanker, it would go in and he was like this is amazing he couldn't be stopped.
• 11:54
Speaker 1: It was one of my favorite moments.
• 11:56
Speaker 1: I would have loved for Doug to dunk on you, Oscar.
• 11:59
Speaker 4: Yeah, well, he didn't.
• 12:00
  Speaker 4: We'll arrange it.
• 12:01
Speaker 4: I think we're on the same team.
• 12:02
  Speaker 4: We'll arrange it.
• 12:03
  Speaker 1: All right friends.
• 12:04
  Speaker 1: Enough of that.
• 12:05
Speaker 1: Today we are talking about how to practically glorify God in your life.
• 12:11
Speaker 1: I was struck recently oh, good.
• 12:14
Speaker 4: By who Finally Lightning?
• 12:16
Speaker 4: What was her name?
• 12:16
  Speaker 4: I should?
• 12:17
Speaker 1: know that's gonna happen.
• 12:18
Speaker 1: I should know by now.
• 12:19
Speaker 1: I was struck recently by lightning.
• 12:22
Speaker 1: What was her name?
• 12:25
Speaker 3: Good, See what I have to put up with Doug and friends, yeah suffering Recently, name good, see what I have to put up with doug and friends.
• 12:32
Speaker 3: Yeah, suffering um recently.
• 12:34
Speaker 3: Oh man, I wonder who invented uh.
• 12:35
Speaker 3: Seriously, um is just so popular um, um yeah, carry on easy.
• 12:40
Speaker 3: You remember you lost your train of thought, but look, mark is ready.
• 12:43
Speaker 1: You were struck by someone.
• 12:44
Speaker 1: Yeah, anyway, something happened recently, um, where I started to realize how so little we really think about glorifying God.
• 12:54
Speaker 1: In fact, I would venture to say that one of the biggest sins we commit as believers is not thinking proactively on how we can live for the glory of God.
• 13:05
Speaker 1: Mark, you remember the Westminster Confession, what it says on that Chief end of man is to glorify.
• 13:12
Speaker 4: God and enjoy Him forever.
• 13:13
  Speaker 1: Amen Forever.
• 13:15
  Speaker 2: Amen, amen Forever.
• 13:16
Speaker 3: Amen, amen, amen, forever, amen, amen, forever Forever.
• 13:20
  Speaker 1: Amen.
• 13:20
Speaker 1: One day, ray, we're going to do a marathon on that, but yeah, living for the glory of God.
• 13:30
Speaker 2: Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God Brother.
• 13:33
Speaker 2: Lawrence inside of his book.
• 13:36
Speaker 2: Very kind of mystical if you would.
• 13:37
Speaker 2: But he said I turn the cake in the pan to the glory of God.
• 13:41
Speaker 3: Wow, right it's every little detail.
• 13:44
Speaker 3: It sounds like a good thing to do actually.
• 13:50
Speaker 2: One thing that I actually really enjoy doing is giving.
• 13:52
Speaker 2: I do enjoy, and I enjoy eating, thanking God for things that perhaps he's never heard.
• 13:57
  Speaker 2: Thank you for.
• 13:59
Speaker 3: Oh, you're stealing my thunder.
• 14:01
  Speaker 2: Am I now?
• 14:01
Speaker 2: Yeah, just the idea of coming across a wildflower, right as you're on a hike, as you're on a walk you know Oscar's hair, whatever it may be right, just thanking God for something that he's never heard thank you for, because I want to be a thankful person as I trek through this thing called life.
• 14:19
Speaker 4: For the record Mark at 40,.
• 14:22
Speaker 4: I thank God for my hair every day.
• 14:23
  Speaker 4: How could you?
• 14:24
Speaker 3: get Mark and Ray confused.
• 14:26
  Speaker 4: I apologize.
• 14:27
  Speaker 3: Yes.
• 14:28
Speaker 3: So anyway, mark stole my thunder because just the other day I said to a guy I just witnessed to him and he's very open with the gospel I said do you ever think about your eyelash?
• 14:35
Speaker 3: He said what are you talking about?
• 14:37
Speaker 3: Have you ever thought about an eyelash?
• 14:39
  Speaker 3: He said no.
• 14:40
Speaker 3: I said do you ever think about it?
• 14:43
Speaker 3: The moment you were conceived, the DNA in you programmed you to grow an eyelash at a certain direction and stop at a certain length, with a certain function, because it's got a sensitivity to it.
• 14:53
Speaker 3: So if anything gets near your eye, you automatically blink because your eyelash is doing its duty.
• 14:58
Speaker 3: And that eyelash that you don't even think about flashes before your eyes probably 10,000 times a day, millions of times each year.
• 15:04
Speaker 3: You don't even think about the one that made it and it brings glory to God, wow.
• 15:09
Speaker 2: Romans 1 says that they're a thankless people.
• 15:12
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, boy, I don't.
• 15:13
  Speaker 2: That's not me.
• 15:14
Speaker 2: I don't want that to be me.
• 15:15
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 15:16
Speaker 1: Ray, that's a brilliant Ah Eyelash plucking.
• 15:19
  Speaker 4: Say thank you.
• 15:22
Speaker 1: People don't pluck their eyelashes, they pluck their eyebrows.
• 15:30
Speaker 1: But you know, ray, I love that thought.
• 15:31
Speaker 1: You know it's the whole image or item becoming a piece of furniture and that you don't even notice it anymore.
• 15:36
Speaker 1: It's like the painting on the wall that you just you don't even think about the details that it relates to and I've never thought about it.
• 15:42
Speaker 1: Your eyelashes are really constantly in the periphery, seen by your eyes, in a sense, all the time.
• 15:52
Speaker 3: And it brings the lids down to wash your eyes and the glands are working to keep it moisturized.
• 15:54
  Speaker 3: Think of giraffes.
• 15:55
Speaker 3: They have huge eyelashes that hit people from five feet away almost.
• 15:58
Speaker 3: They're that big and so they're beautiful.
• 16:00
Speaker 3: And women put stuff on their eyelashes.
• 16:02
Speaker 3: I thought it was just something that was ornamental until I studied it, and it's got a purpose.
• 16:08
Speaker 3: That eyelash has got a purpose.
• 16:09
Speaker 1: Yeah, no, women are extending their eyelashes too.
• 16:12
Speaker 1: Now, Oscar, what does it mean to glorify God?
• 16:17
Speaker 1: Let's get into the definition.
• 16:18
Speaker 4: That's a really good starting place because you guys are touching on One.
• 16:22
Speaker 4: When we talk about words like glory and holy, it's easy for us to oversimplify.
• 16:27
Speaker 4: Especially as preachers you want to oversimplify.
• 16:30
Speaker 4: Especially as preachers, you want to oversimplify to make it memorable, to make it applicable as quickly as possible.
• 16:34
Speaker 4: But as you start getting into the nuance of what these things mean, it's important to recognize the beauty and the complexity of it.
• 16:43
Speaker 4: And so we've already talked about one aspect of glorifying God, which is to thank Him in all that.
• 16:48
Speaker 4: We do say experience.
• 16:51
Speaker 4: I love CS Lewis's quote to follow the sunbeam back up to the sun.
• 16:55
Speaker 4: That's a form of glorifying God.
• 16:58
Speaker 4: Another form of glorifying God that you'll often hear is to act like Him, to reflect His characteristics, and that's true too.
• 17:05
Speaker 4: One theologian talked about the glory of God.
• 17:09
Speaker 4: Often what you'll hear in these definitions is the idea of imaging or the word reflecting, and that's key reflecting.
• 17:18
Speaker 4: And so the way one theologian has talked about it is to glorify God, is to recognize that we are created in His image and that when, like mirrors, think of us as like a mirror, and when our mirrors are properly aligned, the glory of God is reflected from him to us and then off of us into the world around us.
• 17:41
Speaker 4: People experience the glory of God through us glorifying God and yet in another way, also like mirrors.
• 17:49
Speaker 4: When we experience the world around us eating great food, raising children, wild flowers what we're doing is we are experiencing his creation and we are thankfully, we are in thanks taking that reflection and reflecting his creation back to him.
• 18:07
Speaker 4: And so to glorify God is to be like a mirror, reflecting His holiness and goodness.
• 18:14
Speaker 4: And then, just real quick, to add to that, if you think about the fall, we are like mirrors that have broken and now we are shattered pieces of glass that reflect the lowercase g glory of whatever earthly thing passes us by and through the gospel, god puts us back together to reflect his glory.
• 18:37
  Speaker 3: That's beautiful.
• 18:40
Speaker 1: That's amazing when you think about that and you think about the fact, mark, that people who don't know the Lord will often charge God with this sort of egocentricity and that he wants glory for Himself.
• 18:56
Speaker 1: But I think, after defining what glorifying God is, why is it right that God wants all the glory?
• 19:03
Speaker 2: Yeah, and you put it this way right.
• 19:05
Speaker 2: An objection even goes further, and we've talked a little bit about this in the past that God is a jealous God.
• 19:12
Speaker 2: How can he be so jealous, so pity, that he would create man to worship Him, and if they don't worship Him, he's going to send them to hell forever.
• 19:21
Speaker 2: But you think about?
• 19:22
Speaker 2: The most loving thing that God can do is to command and invite a worship from His creation, because what man needs and longs for more than anything is to know their Creator, and so the most loving thing God can do is to reveal Himself to His creation and invite them, command them into a relationship with them.
• 19:44
Speaker 2: It would almost be cruel for God to not point people to their greatest need, and their greatest need is God himself.
• 19:53
Speaker 2: So that invitation is more of a declaration than an invitation saying come and behold a God who knows all about you and isn't going anywhere.
• 20:04
Speaker 4: You know it's like a mother offering her new baby milk.
• 20:07
Speaker 4: No one looks at that mother and is like that's selfish of you.
• 20:11
Speaker 4: No that mother is offering.
• 20:13
Speaker 4: The baby is crying and the mother knows what the baby needs.
• 20:16
Speaker 4: Your soul is crying out for God and he knows what you need.
• 20:20
Speaker 4: You need his glory, which is why the question that you asked earlier to glorify God and enjoy him forever.
• 20:31
Speaker 2: Piper put it this way every man that visits a brothel is secretly seeking after God, but he doesn't know it.
• 20:35
Speaker 2: Right, because he has been birthed inside of his DNA, that deoxyribonucleic acid, within their very being, to seek after God, something greater, someone greater than themselves.
• 20:48
Speaker 2: Right, nobody goes to the Grand Canyon to feel better about themselves.
• 20:51
  Speaker 2: Right?
• 20:52
Speaker 2: We go to the Grand Canyon because we know that there is something greater than ourselves.
• 20:57
Speaker 2: And I remember I was at Lake Shasta on a houseboat with some friends and my family at one time and I was looking at these trees.
• 21:03
Speaker 4: The helicopter dropped you off.
• 21:04
Speaker 2: The helicopter dropped me off and, as I was on this houseboat, I was just in this place of worship and my brother's friend, who was an atheist his name was Steve he came alongside and he goes what are you smiling at?
• 21:15
Speaker 2: And I said what do you see when you look out into the horizon?
• 21:19
Speaker 2: He said I see trees.
• 21:21
Speaker 2: And I said, yeah, I see trees clapping their hands at the God who made them.
• 21:26
Speaker 2: There's the difference, there's this chasm between us and the rest of the world, because everything we see reflects back to God and it puts us in a place of worship.
• 21:36
Speaker 2: Live every moment as a worshipful moment.
• 21:41
Speaker 1: Ray, is it accurate to say that if man is not seeking to glorify God, he is, by default, seeking to glorify himself?
• 21:55
Speaker 3: Yeah, the whole thing about worship being the right thing to do could be illustrated very inaptly by looking at a painting and giving glory to the painter it's the right thing to do.
• 22:02
Speaker 3: You don't leverage glory on the painting.
• 22:05
Speaker 3: It's the painter's skill that put it there.
• 22:07
Speaker 3: And the Bible says the heavens declare the glory of God.
• 22:10
Speaker 3: When we broke away from that other country many years ago, it was a declaration, it wasn't a suggestion Declaration.
• 22:18
Speaker 3: We're independent, take it or leave it, we're out of here and the heavens declare the glory of God.
• 22:24
  Speaker 3: There's no argument.
• 22:24
Speaker 3: When we look at the beautiful sunrise, sunset, the stars, the sun, all those things, especially those big fat, puffy white clouds, they blow me away.
• 22:35
Speaker 3: So many times I've stopped my bike and taken pictures of clouds.
• 22:39
Speaker 1: How much do they weigh, Ray?
• 22:41
Speaker 3: Yes, they weigh hundreds of thousands of tons, believe it or not, because they're filled with water.
• 22:45
Speaker 3: If you take your bucket to wash your car out every week or so every year, it's very heavy a bucket of water.
• 22:51
Speaker 3: Well, there's hundreds of thousands of tons of water sitting in those clouds, like they were lighter than a feather, and they drop when God wants them to drop, so they water the earth.
• 23:02
Speaker 3: That is seriously one of the biggest mysteries it really is and it's just part of the declaration of God's glory.
• 23:07
Speaker 3: So everybody knows God exists.
• 23:10
Speaker 3: Every atheist knows God exists.
• 23:12
Speaker 3: The moment he looks at the heavens, they declare his glory.
• 23:16
Speaker 2: Can I comment on that real quick, my son.
• 23:17
Speaker 2: Ethan sent this to me earlier today.
• 23:19
Speaker 2: We were talking about it over breakfast and then he said in reference to God, and it's this listen, if we limit God to this, it's blasphemous because he's so much greater in grandeur than as we try to understand.
• 23:32
Speaker 2: It's anthropomorphic in terms of us trying to understand the character and the creation of God.
• 23:37
Speaker 2: But he said this is what he sent me.
• 23:39
Speaker 2: He flung the stars into the sky like sparks from a bonfire, each one ignited by the sheer force of his will.
• 23:46
Speaker 2: He breathes and galaxies spiral into motion.
• 23:50
Speaker 2: He whispers and mountains rise from the deep.
• 23:53
Speaker 2: When he steps, the earth quakes, not because it must, but because it cannot help but respond to his presence.
• 24:01
Speaker 2: He sneezes and volcanoes erupt.
• 24:03
Speaker 2: He blinks and hurricanes churn across oceans, winds howling in submission to their maker.
• 24:08
Speaker 2: The lightning you see ripping through the sky.
• 24:11
Speaker 2: That's just his finger tracing a line across the clouds.
• 24:15
Speaker 2: He scatters sand across endless deserts as if it were nothing more than dust from his workbench, scraping it away.
• 24:24
Speaker 2: The snow on mountaintops.
• 24:25
Speaker 2: He piled it there, flake by flake, to crown his creation.
• 24:30
Speaker 2: He tells the sun burn here and it obeys blazing with the power of a billion atomic bombs every second.
• 24:38
Speaker 2: The wind knows its limits because he set them, the eagle soars because he gave it wings, and the leviathan frolics in the depths because he decided it should.
• 24:47
Speaker 2: Every tree stretches toward him as if it's in worship.
• 24:52
Speaker 2: Every atom spins in obedience to his voice.
• 24:55
Speaker 2: The entire universe exists not because he willed it into being, but because he sustains it moment by moment.
• 25:01
Speaker 2: If he withdrew his hand for even a second, everything, everything would collapse into nothingness.
• 25:08
Speaker 2: This is not just a God who creates, this is a God who reigns.
• 25:11
Speaker 2: The cosmos is his throne room and we are but specks of a dust on a speck of dust orbiting a ball of fire he lit and spins it on his finger like a basketball, and yet we limit God to this Blasphemous oh man.
• 25:27
Speaker 1: And even in the midst of it we see that.
• 25:28
  Speaker 3: So who wrote?
• 25:28
  Speaker 2: that.
• 25:29
Speaker 1: Mark, I have no idea, it wasn't a Puritan because it mentioned basketball.
• 25:31
Speaker 1: You've got to send me.
• 25:31
Speaker 1: That Isn't that good.
• 25:33
Speaker 1: It wasn't a Puritan, that was amazing.
• 25:36
Speaker 3: You don't know, who wrote it.
• 25:37
Speaker 2: It's one of the most powerful things I've heard, actually.
• 25:50
Speaker 1: You can send makes it really clear in Isaiah that he does not share his glory with another, and I can't think of anything more insane, more futile, more in a sense like spiritually suicidal, than man trying to rob God of his glory, trying to take what he's not designed to hold.
• 26:03
Speaker 1: It's like you know, I've said it before but it's like a fish trying to live naturally outside of water, a man trying to live underwater naturally.
• 26:14
Speaker 1: You weren't designed for that and the end result is going to be like radical, tragic demise.
• 26:20
Speaker 1: And when we try to take from God what only belongs to Him, what rightly belongs to Him, we're doing something radically unnatural and the end result's going to be disastrous.
• 26:31
Speaker 3: And it's repulsive and I know you've heard me speak of this before.
• 26:33
Speaker 3: When you do a good deed as a Christian, you don't want the glory, you want God to be glorified.
• 26:40
Speaker 3: You know you're a good person doing this.
• 26:42
  Speaker 3: No, I'm not.
• 26:43
  Speaker 3: I'm a wretch.
• 26:43
Speaker 2: That's a really good insight, ray.
• 26:44
  Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm a rich.
• 26:45
  Speaker 2: That's a really good insight.
• 26:46
  Speaker 1: Ray.
• 26:46
Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you, mark, that's really good.
• 26:47
Speaker 1: Did I just say what?
• 26:48
Speaker 2: I was going to say You're letting us into your heart, ray.
• 26:49
Speaker 1: No no, Thank you oh thank you, you're receiving the glory, I get the joke you did.
• 26:54
Speaker 4: Wow, hypocrite, I haven't finished God.
• 27:00
Speaker 1: Glory to God, brother.
• 27:01
Speaker 1: Yeah, important for us to remember that, that our greatest good is glorifying the Lord, magnifying Him, and that should be the end result of every good thing that we ever do.
• 27:14
Speaker 1: Right, let your light so shine among men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father, who is in heaven.
• 27:21
Speaker 1: And Oscar, there is a way to do that where we draw glory to the Lord and there's a way to do that where we draw glory to the Lord, and there's a way to draw glory to ourselves while pretending to draw glory to the Lord.
• 27:31
Speaker 1: We have to be careful of that.
• 27:34
  Speaker 4: Man.
• 27:34
Speaker 4: That's a slippery slope and I mean, I think it's important to recognize the glory of God now falls into all areas of life, because I think for most Christians they think oh yeah, I glorify God.
• 27:46
Speaker 4: I go to church on Sunday.
• 27:47
Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I glorify God.
• 27:48
Speaker 4: I go to church on Sunday.
• 27:49
Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I glorify God.
• 27:50
Speaker 4: I lift my hands when I worship him.
• 27:52
Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I glorify God when I read my Bibles.
• 27:54
Speaker 4: But to your point EZ, to glorify God is to see his glory integrated in every aspect of your life, so that when you go to work, you don't chiefly go to work to pay bills.
• 28:07
Speaker 4: You don't chiefly go to work to advance your kingdom.
• 28:12
Speaker 4: You don't chiefly go to work to get the praise of other people.
• 28:14
Speaker 4: You don't chiefly go to work to gather a following.
• 28:18
Speaker 4: You chiefly go to work for the glory of God.
• 28:25
Speaker 4: When you interact with your family, with your wife, with your children, you don't chiefly go to work to make sure you're comfortable.
• 28:30
Speaker 4: You don't chiefly go to work to make sure you're comfortable.
• 28:34
Speaker 4: You don't chiefly go to work to make sure they respect you.
• 28:35
Speaker 4: You chiefly serve them to the glory of God.
• 28:36
Speaker 4: When you understand the call to glorify God and enjoy him forever, you see every aspect of your life start to fold in, even the eating of a good fruit, the making of a great table or the relationship building within a family.
• 28:50
Speaker 4: Everything is done for his glory.
• 28:53
Speaker 4: And then, when we're really humble and honest, we realize how often our hearts are prone to wander, because often we talk about sin as the lying and the blasphemy, and absolutely that's it giving birth to almost death.
• 29:09
Speaker 4: But sin starts when we start removing glory from God, or I should say, because you can't actually affect the glory of God.
• 29:18
Speaker 4: What I should say is when you stop recognizing the glory of God in those little areas of your life.
• 29:24
  Speaker 3: That's a good point, yeah.
• 29:25
  Speaker 2: Easy.
• 29:25
Speaker 2: Do you remember what you had shared many years ago about going to work?
• 29:28
Speaker 2: You're not going to work for the paycheck, you're going to fulfill the first commandment.
• 29:33
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, where I talk about what our purpose in life should be in every area, because often we look to different positions that we hold or different roles that we function in as sources of supply for our need.
• 29:47
Speaker 1: And when you do that, everything ends up falling apart because it becomes self-focused, and again it becomes self-worship and also self-glorifying, in that you want to receive all the praise and all the rewards of it rather than giving them all to the Lord.
• 30:04
Speaker 1: So, yeah, so instead of going to work and seeing work as a source of supply for my need, I look to the Lord as the source of supply for all things, which glorifies Him.
• 30:12
Speaker 1: Right, I mean, when we function in that way, in a practical sense, I'm looking to God as the provider for all things.
• 30:18
Speaker 1: That magnifies Him, it elevates Him, it highlights Him as a faithful providing Father who loves His children.
• 30:26
Speaker 1: So, instead of looking to work as a source of supply for my needs, I look to work as a medium through which I have the opportunity to glorify God by loving Him with all my heart, mind, soul and strength and being all that he's called me to be as an employee and as a servant, and I love people, thereby glorifying God, by walking in love, by meeting the greatest need, through sacrificial service, that's great.
• 30:48
Speaker 1: And so then what happens when the variables kick in right?
• 30:52
Speaker 1: Because it may be a great day at work, it may be a horrible day.
• 30:54
Speaker 1: My pay may get cut, my hours may get docked, my boss may be mean to me, my coworkers may slander me and gossip about me.
• 31:02
Speaker 1: It's true, it happens here, but if my focus is on loving God and people glorifying the Lord, then I'm not moved by that, because I'm not there to get glory for myself.
• 31:10
Speaker 1: I'm not there to get my needs met.
• 31:12
Speaker 1: I'm there to give.
• 31:14
Speaker 1: Same thing with marriage, same thing with ministry, same thing with the relationships.
• 31:17
Speaker 1: People are looking to things that are not meant to be a source of supply for their needs and so, therefore, they're not glorifying the Lord.
• 31:24
Speaker 1: But when he's our source and we're just looking to all these things as mediums to glorify Him by obedience and by love, oh man, everything comes together.
• 31:40
Speaker 1: So we have to remember that, and we also have to remember again why we exist.
• 31:42
Speaker 1: You cited it, mark, earlier 1 Corinthians, 10, 31,.
• 31:46
Speaker 1: Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all of the glory of God.
• 31:47
Speaker 1: That's why, years ago, right, confett?
• 31:48
Speaker 3: Yeah, I've been asking people like talking about eating and drinking to the glory of God, what's your favorite food?
• 31:52
Speaker 3: I've got a lot of people tell me their favorite food.
• 31:54
Speaker 3: I say do you like eating?
• 31:55
Speaker 3: Oh, I love it.
• 31:55
Speaker 3: They've got between 2,000 and 3,000 taste buds dancing around doing the disco.
• 32:00
Speaker 3: Every time you put something neat in.
• 32:04
Speaker 3: I say who to?
• 32:04
Speaker 3: Do you ever give God thanks for your food?
• 32:07
Speaker 3: And they say, no, wow, do you think that's right?
• 32:14
Speaker 3: Yeah, everything you've got comes from God.
• 32:15
Speaker 3: Every delicious thing you put on your tongue comes from God, because you've got a tongue and you've got taste buds and you've got salivary glands you can swallow and you can eat and you can enjoy looking at good food and then tasting good food.
• 32:23
Speaker 3: And it is a sin to be unthankful and ungrateful, as the scriptures say in the book of.
• 32:30
  Speaker 1: Romans, chapter 3.
• 32:30
Speaker 1: You know, I've heard it said that the unbeliever doesn't glorify God or give thanks to God for the most extraordinary things, but the believer will for the most ordinary things.
• 32:40
Speaker 1: Oh boy, that's beautiful and, ray, I love what you said recently just about how you were almost worshiping the Lord because of your toast and honey and whatever you put on it.
• 32:50
  Speaker 3: Butter.
• 32:50
Speaker 3: Jesus ate honey and butter, butter.
• 32:52
Speaker 3: Yes, but I love that I believe it's not butter.
• 32:57
Speaker 1: Finding every little thing and saying Lord, thank you, thank you for what you've done.
• 33:03
Speaker 1: I give you glory.
• 33:04
Speaker 1: This is you, this is your creation, this is your design, and that's why I'm blown away that there are so many atheist doctors and scientists.
• 33:14
Speaker 1: I mean, if there's anyone that should be standing back and glorifying the Lord, it's them and they don't.
• 33:21
Speaker 1: It's like Mark, I remember in the what Is it movie, when you were talking to that doctor about abortion and just the way you said it to him.
• 33:28
  Speaker 1: You said you're a doctor.
• 33:30
Speaker 2: He said I don't want to talk about these things.
• 33:31
Speaker 2: Yeah, I was asking him when does life begin?
• 33:33
Speaker 2: And he goes I don't want to get into that.
• 33:34
Speaker 2: I go well, listen, we have the law and the science of embryology, of biogenesis.
• 33:38
Speaker 2: He says I don't want to get into these things.
• 33:39
  Speaker 2: I'm like you're a.
• 33:50
Speaker 4: And every other book on embryology tells us exactly when life begins just shadowing what the Bible has already told us.
• 33:53
Speaker 4: You bring up the fact that it's like doctors have a first row seat at how good God's creation is.
• 33:57
Speaker 4: That's why there are no atheists working at Wienerschnitzel, right.
• 34:01
Speaker 2: You know another area, we all die.
• 34:03
Speaker 4: That's why you know, another area where we can glorify God is in our weakness, because the paradox of the gospel is that strength and his strength comes through our weakness, and so to glorify God is to recognize where we are weak.
• 34:23
Speaker 4: He is made strong.
• 34:25
  Speaker 4: 2 Corinthians 12, 9,.
• 34:26
Speaker 4: My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made strong.
• 34:28
Speaker 4: Second, corinthians 12, nine my grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
• 34:32
Speaker 4: And I think, uh, first off, in our weakness, in our failures, in the times where we don't glorify God, he is made strong through his grace.
• 34:41
Speaker 4: Uh, I think, in our weakness, when we recognize that we don't have to go out about the world pridefully, pridefully, that we don't have to go out about the world pridefully or arrogantly, we have the humility to repent and to ask for, to say I'm sorry.
• 34:54
  Speaker 4: Why?
• 34:54
Speaker 4: Why are so many people afraid of repentance, afraid to apologize, afraid to sit down and get on one knee and look at their kids and say I'm sorry, I shouldn't have gotten, that was my fault, that wasn't your fault.
• 35:05
  Speaker 4: Why?
• 35:05
Speaker 4: It's because they think that they need to be strong in their strength.
• 35:09
Speaker 4: But actually the greatest strength you can experience is God's strength in the midst of your weakness.
• 35:16
Speaker 1: Oh, that's so good, oscar.
• 35:17
Speaker 1: We don't often go there, you know, because, like we talked about even with Tim Challies on our last episode, people don't think about like viewing God positively when they're in a state of weakness.
• 35:30
  Speaker 1: It's like God.
• 35:31
Speaker 1: Why am I going through this?
• 35:32
Speaker 1: Why do I feel so weak?
• 35:33
Speaker 1: Why don't I have the strength that I want and that I need?
• 35:36
Speaker 1: But the believer can turn his gaze toward the Lord and say no, lord, you're doing something through this and Excuse me.
• 35:46
Speaker 1: And my we should make a shirt.
• 35:54
Speaker 3: Excuse me, Lord I glorify you for the thorn in my side, Mark Spence.
• 36:01
Speaker 1: But we can look and say, lord, despite what I feel, what I think, what's happening?
• 36:06
Speaker 1: Look, you are working in my life.
• 36:10
Speaker 1: This work you're doing is not pleasant for me, it's not enjoyable, I don't like it.
• 36:15
Speaker 1: But let me pause and go to the root of what I just said.
• 36:20
Speaker 1: You are working in me, you pay attention to me, you even know that I exist.
• 36:30
Speaker 1: I mean, mark, that thing you just read about being that speck of dust on it, we can't even fathom how minuscule we are.
• 36:37
Speaker 1: You are doing whatever it is.
• 36:39
Speaker 1: You're involved with me, lord.
• 36:41
Speaker 1: Even if it were so that God was going to torment me, right, he's not.
• 36:45
Speaker 1: But let's say wow, you're even acknowledging me.
• 36:48
  Speaker 1: That's mind-blowing.
• 36:50
Speaker 3: You've reminded me of those motion graphics that came out many years ago where they zero on something like an ant or something on the earth and then pull back to outer space.
• 36:58
Speaker 1: Yeah, oh, I love those.
• 36:59
Speaker 3: And it just you think oh, that breaks the proportion of what I am.
• 37:03
Speaker 3: I'm an absolute speck, totally yeah, you are.
• 37:06
Speaker 3: Yeah, Thanks, I'm an absolute spik, totally yeah, you are.
• 37:08
Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks, you are.
• 37:09
Speaker 3: We are More like a dick Very small.
• 37:11
Speaker 1: Okay, so we glorify God through His creation.
• 37:14
Speaker 1: We glorify God through our weaknesses, Mark.
• 37:23
Speaker 1: How do we glorify God through?
• 37:24
Speaker 2: repentance, because repentance is a good thing.
• 37:26
Speaker 2: Oscar touched on it lightly yeah, repentance, as Thomas Watson said, it flows like a river.
• 37:29
Speaker 2: Right, a repentance is an overflowed heart, of a forgiven heart.
• 37:33
Speaker 2: Macarthur said that repentance should be as loud as our sin once was.
• 37:38
Speaker 2: That repentance is a beautiful word.
• 37:40
Speaker 2: It means that God sees you just the way you are and he loves you too much to keep you in that state.
• 37:44
Speaker 2: And repentance is merely a reflection and a response to what God has already done and is doing inside of our lives, right?
• 37:52
Speaker 2: So, yeah, repentance is a great thing.
• 37:55
Speaker 2: Right, that Greek word, metanoia, to change your mind, or, as Bonson said, to think God's thoughts after Him, that God has called us to respond and we are just merely responding to what he has called us to do.
• 38:06
  Speaker 2: So repentance, ray.
• 38:08
Speaker 2: We get accused of being a works-based organization because we call people to repentance, but Jesus did the same thing.
• 38:16
Speaker 2: Peter, james, john Jude, they all did the same thing.
• 38:18
Speaker 2: There is a message repent and believe the gospel, repent and believe the gospel.
• 38:22
Speaker 2: All the while, we know that God grants repentance that leads to the truth, but without repentance you will not see a heaven.
• 38:30
Speaker 2: I think it's Luke 13, verse 3 and verse 5, it says unless you repent, you will perish.
• 38:36
  Speaker 2: You will.
• 38:37
Speaker 2: So there's no half-hearted decisions made for Christ.
• 38:41
Speaker 2: Decisions is easy right, we've talked about it, ray but it's that repentance that is difficulty.
• 38:46
Speaker 2: It's a calling to absolutely leave the old man behind and people say, well, I don't know how to do that, I don't know where to begin.
• 38:54
Speaker 2: Listen, repentance is simply turning to God.
• 38:57
Speaker 2: That's really what it is.
• 38:58
Speaker 2: Repentance is a turning to God and as you turn to God, you're leaving behind everything else we within our society, we focus in on.
• 39:07
Speaker 2: Well, I got to stop this, I got to stop that.
• 39:08
Speaker 2: No, turn to God and live as you turn to God.
• 39:12
Speaker 2: You are leaving behind anything and everything.
• 39:16
Speaker 2: It just doesn't matter what it is.
• 39:19
Speaker 2: But you can only do that by turning towards God.
• 39:22
Speaker 2: You can kind of self-will.
• 39:23
Speaker 2: This is what AA does, right, you try to hold on to your higher power right, that's the Automobile Association, whatever that is the Automobile.
• 39:32
  Speaker 3: Association, triple A.
• 39:33
Speaker 3: I say I want you to turn around, turn around, you turn oh boy, you turn for Christ.
• 39:38
Speaker 2: See what I do.
• 39:39
Speaker 2: Jesus said if you love me, you will keep my commandments right.
• 39:43
Speaker 2: I had shared with my kids many times.
• 39:45
Speaker 2: Right, that the rules of this house are not burdensome.
• 39:48
Speaker 2: Neither are the commandments of the Lord, right.
• 39:50
Speaker 2: If you don't want to obey them, you don't need to obey them.
• 39:52
Speaker 2: But there's the door right.
• 39:53
Speaker 2: Go your way in peace.
• 39:55
Speaker 2: I love you as you go your way.
• 39:56
Speaker 2: Be doers of the word, not hearers only, so deceiving yourselves.
• 40:00
Speaker 2: So repentance is such a sweet word.
• 40:03
Speaker 2: It means that God sees us as a finished work of art and in order to get there word.
• 40:08
Speaker 2: It means that God sees us as a finished work of art and in order to get there, there's some work that needs to get done in the process.
• 40:11
Speaker 1: Yeah, god now commands all men, everywhere to repentance.
• 40:15
Speaker 1: I love the bold and almost all-encompassing language in that.
• 40:23
Speaker 1: First of all, god commands.
• 40:25
Speaker 1: It's not a suggestion, it's not an option, it's a command that's as forthright as you can get when you're speaking about God's indicatives.
• 40:34
Speaker 1: He commands all men, that's everybody, everywhere.
• 40:38
Speaker 1: Right, it covers every person, every place, and it's something that is completely indicative of something you must do.
• 40:50
Speaker 1: And it's important, mark, to highlight too.
• 40:52
Speaker 1: Yeah, repentance is a change of mind that can never be divorced from the resulting fruit, which is a change of action.
• 41:01
Speaker 2: They're bedfellows two sides of the same coin.
• 41:03
Speaker 3: And it's very important to remember what comes after what you said.
• 41:05
Speaker 3: God commands all men everywhere to repent.
• 41:07
  Speaker 2: Why.
• 41:08
Speaker 3: Because he has appointed a day in which he'll judge the world in righteousness.
• 41:12
Speaker 3: And that's often what's missing in many gospel proclamations.
• 41:15
Speaker 3: Law without consequence is nothing but good advice, someone once said.
• 41:19
Speaker 3: And you can talk about the commandments, but if there's no consequence for breaking them, they're nothing but good advice.
• 41:25
Speaker 3: You shall not steal, shall not commit adultery, shall not lie that makes a good society.
• 41:28
Speaker 3: But there must be the preaching of consequence.
• 41:31
Speaker 3: God's going to have a day of judgment.
• 41:34
Speaker 1: And friends, listen, here's why repentance radically glorifies God.
• 41:38
Speaker 1: Again, we always go back to the roots.
• 41:40
Speaker 1: It's easy to just look at what's on the surface level.
• 41:42
Speaker 1: Go back to the root.
• 41:43
Speaker 1: Why does that glorify God?
• 41:45
Speaker 1: Well, when someone is repenting, what they're implying is that there is room for forgiveness, that there is potential for change, that there is now the wherewithal to be able to forsake what you're doing.
• 41:58
Speaker 1: Well, how is that made possible?
• 42:01
Speaker 1: Through what Jesus did, the fact that Christ died upon the cross and shed his blood for our sins.
• 42:08
  Speaker 1: In him.
• 42:09
Speaker 1: Now we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, we can now repent.
• 42:13
Speaker 1: So what are we doing when we repent?
• 42:15
Speaker 1: We're lifting Christ up, like Moses did with the serpent in the wilderness, so that he could draw all men unto himself.
• 42:21
Speaker 1: So when you repent, you're glorifying God because you're saying God, what you did was valid.
• 42:27
Speaker 1: What Christ did on the cross was a work that carries with it significance and it's real.
• 42:35
Speaker 1: And now I'm going to give to you what you've called me to give, and that is my brokenness and my repentance.
• 42:42
Speaker 1: And now I'm walking in a way that's causing what you did to function in a practical way.
• 42:49
Speaker 1: You died and gave your life upon that cross and rose again, so that I can have forgiveness of sins.
• 42:54
Speaker 1: As I repent, lord, I lift up what you did.
• 42:56
Speaker 1: I herald in essence, when I'm repenting right Oscar, I am really, in other words, displaying the gospel.
• 43:03
Speaker 4: Yeah, I think the ghosts in the room that we're getting at but haven't identified is well, you kind of did which is that so many people their ears shudder at the word repentance.
• 43:13
Speaker 4: So many people don't even want to use the word repentance because it's like, ooh, you know, it means something bad, and I think a lot of times what we hear when someone says repentance is turn or burn.
• 43:22
Speaker 4: But repentance what you guys are getting at.
• 43:24
Speaker 4: And you mentioned Thomas Watson.
• 43:26
Speaker 4: I've been rereading a lot of his stuff the Lord's Supper and his little book on repentance.
• 43:30
Speaker 4: It's like 120 pages long, it is so powerful, and in there he also talks about repentance as this like homecoming God is inviting you home.
• 43:42
Speaker 4: He's saying come and be my son, come and be my daughter.
• 43:46
Speaker 4: You've been doing life your way, you've been creating chaos and rebelling against me.
• 43:52
Speaker 4: I do not desire to hand you over to your sin.
• 43:56
Speaker 4: Come home, turn and come back.
• 43:58
Speaker 4: Like the prodigal son, he runs to meet you out there.
• 44:02
Speaker 4: And so repentance is this beautiful command, this beautiful promise, this gift that God gives to His children that they get to go home.
• 44:11
Speaker 2: As Bonhoeffer said, when God calls a man, he bids him to come and die.
• 44:16
Speaker 3: You're saying repentance glorifies God.
• 44:17
Speaker 3: Psalm 51, verse 4, against you and you only have I sinned and done this evil in your sight.
• 44:21
Speaker 3: That you may be justified in what you say.
• 44:25
Speaker 3: It shows that God is correct in his assessment of us as human beings.
• 44:30
Speaker 3: I just absolutely love Spurgeon because he nails it so often God is glorified when we seek and save that which is lost.
• 44:38
Speaker 3: This is what Spurgeon said a great object of glorifying God is to be mainly achieved by the winning of souls.
• 44:45
Speaker 3: How amazing, what an incredible giant theologian he was.
• 44:49
Speaker 3: And he condescended to the irksome task of evangelism.
• 44:52
Speaker 3: He said do not close a single sermon without addressing the ungodly.
• 44:57
  Speaker 3: That's Spurgeon.
• 44:58
  Speaker 3: How wonderful.
• 44:59
  Speaker 1: Wow.
• 44:59
Speaker 1: So, yeah, we glorify God through repentance ourselves, but we also glorify God through calling people to repentance through evangelism, and that is something that I think, as believers, we don't see as clearly as we should.
• 45:15
Speaker 1: And the reason for that repent Mark.
• 45:18
Speaker 1: Glorify God by repenting of wounding your elder 75 years old.
• 45:24
Speaker 1: What did you just do I?
• 45:24
Speaker 2: was going to have a bruise.
• 45:25
Speaker 2: Yeah, yes, I started.
• 45:28
Speaker 3: I just touched Mark's pad there, what is it?
• 45:31
Speaker 3: And then he reached out and got his finger and went flick with this great huge finger on the veins on the back of your hand, which is really painful.
• 45:40
Speaker 1: You know what teachers do in school.
• 45:42
  Speaker 3: Wrap the knuckles.
• 45:43
Speaker 1: I think I'm going to switch you guys.
• 45:45
Speaker 3: Oh, so I can be next to you oh no no, no, never mind.
• 45:48
Speaker 4: Are you sure you want to do that?
• 45:48
Speaker 4: Never mind, something sorry.
• 45:52
Speaker 1: No, I was just.
• 45:53
Speaker 1: I don't know what I was going to say, Sorry.
• 45:55
Speaker 3: No, I was listening anyway, they totally distracted me.
• 45:58
  Speaker 1: That's what I did.
• 45:59
Speaker 4: Isaiah 43 is so interesting and it's something that we need to talk about too, in regards to God's glory.
• 46:05
Speaker 4: It says everyone who was called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.
• 46:16
Speaker 4: And then Psalm 8, what is mankind?
• 46:18
Speaker 4: That you are mindful to them, Human beings, that you care for them.
• 46:22
Speaker 4: You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them.
• 46:25
Speaker 4: He crowned them with glory and honor.
• 46:29
  Speaker 4: That's what Psalm 8 says.
• 46:30
Speaker 4: He says he crowns his people with glory and honor.
• 46:33
Speaker 4: The glory, John 17, the glory that you have given me.
• 46:37
Speaker 4: I give to them, is Jesus talking.
• 46:39
Speaker 4: He's giving us a glory that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and you in me.
• 46:45
Speaker 4: That they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and love them even as you love me.
• 46:53
Speaker 4: Here's the reality of the glory of God is that he is so kind to allow us to participate in it through the cross.
• 47:03
Speaker 4: That great glory that we get to reflect.
• 47:07
Speaker 4: He crowns us with it through the blood of His Son, Jesus.
• 47:11
Speaker 4: The glory of God is not like the sun in which we just look at.
• 47:16
Speaker 4: The glory of God is like the sun in which it penetrates our lives and we feel every aspect of it.
• 47:23
Speaker 4: Because he crowns us.
• 47:24
Speaker 4: With it, we get to participate in.
• 47:28
Speaker 4: The glory of God Isn't?
• 47:30
  Speaker 1: that wild.
• 47:30
Speaker 1: That's so good, man Ray.
• 47:32
Speaker 1: You know Moses had a little run-in with the glory of God and he wanted God to show him all his glory.
• 47:39
Speaker 1: One of my favorite portions of Scripture God says show me your glory.
• 47:44
Speaker 3: And God said you cannot see my glory and live.
• 47:47
Speaker 3: You cannot stand in my presence and live.
• 47:49
Speaker 3: No man has seen God at any time.
• 47:50
Speaker 3: We have people say oh, I went into God's presence and we talked as buddies, but you can't live in God's presence.
• 47:56
Speaker 3: And the reason we can't live in God's presence is because he's holy and like a judge who is angry at some wicked man who has murdered a young child, the judge's anger will be in direct proportion to his goodness.
• 48:08
Speaker 3: If he's good, he'll be angry.
• 48:09
Speaker 3: If he's very good, he'll be extremely angry.
• 48:11
Speaker 3: If he's not at all angry, he's not a good judge.
• 48:14
Speaker 3: He should be removed from the bench.
• 48:16
Speaker 3: And the Bible says God is angry at the wicked every day and if we stood in his presence he would kill us justly because of his glory.
• 48:23
Speaker 3: So when Moses wanted to see God's glory, the interesting thing is that God says I'll hide you in the cleft of a rock and I'll let my goodness pass you by.
• 48:33
Speaker 3: He didn't say glory, he said goodness.
• 48:35
Speaker 3: And it's because the goodness of God would have killed Moses instantly had he been in the presence.
• 48:40
Speaker 3: And it's just a wonderful picture of us sheltering in the rock of ages Rock of ages cleft for me.
• 48:48
Speaker 3: Let me hide myself in thee.
• 48:50
Speaker 3: So when we stand in the presence of God on that day, we can stand pure of heart because of what Jesus did on the cross.
• 48:58
Speaker 3: He said blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
• 49:01
Speaker 1: Amen, wow, yeah, and we need to, I think, pause when we hear or read passages like that and recognize that man couldn't invent something that foreign to his thinking, man couldn't conceive something that is so deeply profound as that right.
• 49:21
Speaker 1: Like if I were to create or fashion or form a God I would never get into, like his glory and you can't see all my glory and my goodness.
• 49:28
Speaker 1: I mean, it's just like there are those moments again I've shared before where I'm awed by scripture, where I'm reminded of God, and that's another way we can glorify him too.
• 49:40
Speaker 1: We've put out the Goosebump Bible, the Goosebump Bible RL Stine.
• 49:44
Speaker 1: You hit a button and bumps go up when you read a good verse.
• 49:49
Speaker 3: It'd be a little bumpy cover.
• 49:51
  Speaker 4: Easy.
• 49:51
Speaker 4: I have a question for you, because I've been studying that verse for the last couple of weeks now, or that story of Moses and one scholar talks about because it uses the phrase like the backside.
• 50:04
Speaker 4: So he points out that probably the most accurate depiction of what Moses saw was the shadow of the glory of God, not the glory of God directly the shadow of the glory of God, and that alone radiated his face and I always thought to myself, like if that's what it did to Moses, his face, what did it do to his heart?
• 50:26
Speaker 4: So, EZ, how do we disciple our children to see the glory of God?
• 50:35
Speaker 1: Well, I think, first and foremost, you want your children to crave God because of how they watch you pursue Him.
• 50:44
Speaker 1: I've talked about John Patton before.
• 50:47
Speaker 1: He's one of my heroes.
• 50:48
Speaker 1: He was the guy that won the New Hebrides tribes to the Lord back in the 1800s and what moved him was his father and his father's pursuit of the Lord, and he talked about how, after their prayer time, he said they would be sitting around their father and after their father got done praying, he said they would see almost the glow on his face because of his holy pursuit of God, his love for the Lord, and he talked about how he wanted in some way to be like his father and to be the answer to his father's prayer for the unreached tribes that his father was praying for.
• 51:28
Speaker 1: And then he became the answer to that prayer.
• 51:31
Speaker 1: He won all these people to the Lord in the New Hebrides tribes.
• 51:34
  Speaker 1: Were they cannibals?
• 51:36
Speaker 1: Yeah, they were cannibalistic.
• 51:37
Speaker 3: Well, I would have dropped tracks fire.
• 51:39
Speaker 3: Drop it at the point, yeah.
• 51:43
Speaker 1: But, oscar, pursue God, have a genuine walk with the Lord and make much of God before your children as you exalt His glory.
• 51:53
Speaker 1: Don't crave the Lord, you know, versus just preaching at them and then living a hypocritical life.
• 51:58
  Speaker 1: So that's huge.
• 52:00
Speaker 1: I was talking about His Word before, about how we can glorify God by being people who seek His face through His Word and then being a people who proclaim His Word and then being a people who obey His Word.
• 52:14
Speaker 1: All of that glorifies the Lord, because that's His Word and he elevates it above His own name, he says.
• 52:19
Speaker 1: And so we need to recognize that when we're a people of the Word, we glorify the Lord.
• 52:25
Speaker 1: I was touching on evangelism, too, before you guys were beating each other up, and I was talking about how we don't often think about evangelism as glorifying God because we're so caught up in our fear, we're so caught up in our inadequacy, we're so caught up in our nervousness that we don't stop to recognize that when we proclaim the gospel, we're saying that again, god is true.
• 52:50
Speaker 1: We're saying, look at what he did.
• 52:52
Speaker 1: And so I think when we fall more in love with the Lord, when we recognize how much glory is important to the Lord, and then we understand that we have the ability to glorify the Lord.
• 53:07
Speaker 1: That's going to begin to move us toward doing the things that we're not necessarily comfortable with.
• 53:12
Speaker 1: I'm going to go share the gospel.
• 53:13
Speaker 1: Do you want to?
• 53:14
Speaker 1: No, how do you feel?
• 53:15
  Speaker 1: I'm terrified?
• 53:16
Speaker 1: Would you rather do anything else?
• 53:17
  Speaker 1: Absolutely.
• 53:18
Speaker 1: Why are you going to do it?
• 53:19
Speaker 1: Because I want to glorify God, amen.
• 53:23
Speaker 1: Why are you going to repent right now?
• 53:27
Speaker 1: Do you feel like repenting and turning from your sin?
• 53:28
Speaker 1: No, I love this sin.
• 53:30
  Speaker 1: Why?
• 53:32
Speaker 1: Because I want to glorify God.
• 53:33
Speaker 1: It becomes all-consuming and then it begins to touch on everything.
• 53:37
Speaker 1: Why are you determined to be a good husband and a good wife and a faithful, obedient child?
• 53:43
Speaker 1: Because I want to glorify God.
• 53:45
Speaker 1: You've got tears in your eye.
• 53:47
Speaker 1: I do, I know, because when you fall in love with him, when you understand that you're going to be with him forever, when you recognize that you and your puniness and you and your fallenness and your brokenness and in your inadequacy, can still glorify God in your weakness, it opens your eyes up and you start living in a way where, like, why am I doing that?
• 54:07
Speaker 1: And you start why am I praying for people without anybody knowing?
• 54:10
Speaker 1: I'm praying for them and I've been doing it for years, and these people are actually nasty to me and treat me in a hateful way.
• 54:15
Speaker 1: Why do I do it?
• 54:16
Speaker 1: Thanks, oh no the secret's out.
• 54:20
Speaker 3: You praise for us daily.
• 54:21
Speaker 1: Oh, man, so you guys know what I'm saying.
• 54:25
Speaker 1: Yes, so you guys know what I'm saying.
• 54:30
Speaker 1: Yes, man, like jealous for the glory of yeah, you want to exalt him in everything you do and, again, that's why, years ago I I did this with my family.
• 54:34
Speaker 1: I've shared it a number of times before, but I know we have new listeners all the time, or those that need to be reminded where I unveiled for them our family vision statement to gladly and passionately glorify god in every thought, affection, word, word and deed, while constantly enjoying him as our greatest pleasure and most precious treasure.
• 54:53
Speaker 1: That's it, and part of that comes from the Westminster Confession chief and a man to glorify God and enjoy him forever.
• 55:01
Speaker 1: But I wanted to get detailed on that right.
• 55:03
Speaker 1: In every thought, affection, word and deed, and everything I think and everything feel, and everything that I do and everything that I say, I want my God to be glorified.
• 55:14
Speaker 1: You want to talk about purpose.
• 55:17
Speaker 1: People are I don't know what my purpose in life is.
• 55:19
Speaker 1: I mean, talk about like a Pandora's box in a good way.
• 55:22
Speaker 1: Live for the glory of God, man, you're going to have purpose beyond limit.
• 55:28
Speaker 4: Does that make sense?
• 55:28
Speaker 4: It also changes the why in what we do.
• 55:33
Speaker 4: We talk about the gospel as an irksome task.
• 55:36
Speaker 4: There's certainly times in which we like I don't want to do this, but I should.
• 55:39
Speaker 4: But I think when we're really drinking the cup of the glory of God, like Psalm 51, he goes from recognizing his sin, from repenting of his sin, and then he says restore to me the joy of your salvation.
• 55:54
Speaker 4: He talks about joy.
• 55:55
Speaker 4: Restore me, fill me up.
• 55:57
Speaker 4: Because then reflecting or I should say acting out the glory of God and family and proclaiming the gospel becomes an overflow of joy.
• 56:07
Speaker 4: And we are created to overflow with joy.
• 56:10
Speaker 4: I've said it before it's like every single one of us are designed to do this.
• 56:14
Speaker 4: When you watch a new movie, when you read a great book, when you visit a new restaurant, the first thing you want to do is invite other people to share in that goodness.
• 56:23
Speaker 4: It's natural in you.
• 56:25
Speaker 4: Did you see that game?
• 56:26
Speaker 4: Did you watch that movie?
• 56:27
Speaker 4: Have you listened to that new album that just came out?
• 56:28
  Speaker 4: It's so good.
• 56:29
  Speaker 4: You gotta listen.
• 56:30
Speaker 4: We are by nature evangelists to the things that bring us joy.
• 56:34
Speaker 4: And what more to bring us joy than the glory of God and then evangelize that?
• 56:41
Speaker 3: Amen, that's so good.
• 56:43
Speaker 1: Yeah, and I love what Piper said.
• 56:45
Speaker 1: He said glorifying means feeling and thinking and acting in ways that reflect his greatness, that make much of God, that give evidence of the supreme greatness of all his attributes and the all-satisfying beauty of his manifold perfections.
• 57:04
Speaker 2: Oh man, that's really good.
• 57:06
Speaker 1: What a definition you know to make much of God, mark.
• 57:12
Speaker 1: It was you who, years ago, said something that really impacted me.
• 57:16
Speaker 1: You know that we need to stop trying to impress people with ourselves.
• 57:21
Speaker 2: I got that from you.
• 57:22
  Speaker 2: Did you?
• 57:24
Speaker 3: You guys hang out way too much I have got things gone recycled, so that's why you thought it was so good.
• 57:29
Speaker 2: No, but to continue on with what you were talking about with Piper, he said if you do not see God in his glory, well then you'll be mesmerized by fireworks and streetlights.
• 57:39
Speaker 3: Mark, I really appreciate your sermon Hell's Best Kept Secret.
• 57:41
Speaker 3: Thank you, it's meant so much he goes.
• 57:44
Speaker 4: I love it when you quote me, mark Sinners in the hands of an angry God no that's Oscar.
• 57:47
  Speaker 1: Thank you, yeah.
• 57:49
Speaker 1: So, guys, we need to be mindful that we have a function, that we have a purpose as God's people, and that is to make much of Him to even recognize that glorifying God doesn't always look the way we think it's going to look Like.
• 58:08
Speaker 1: When I think of glorifying God, let's say in my preaching ministry that my sermon is going to be just blazing and everyone's going to be in awe of what I just said and I'm going to feel good and that's probably glorifying myself.
• 58:21
Speaker 1: You know, maybe God wants to be glorified through me, fumbling and stumbling and not making all the sense that I had hoped to make, but he wants people to see me up there and as they see me, they see a sincerity and they see a delivery that is somehow pointing them toward truth while not giving any focus to me.
• 58:45
Speaker 1: And then they walk away away and I walk away feeling horrible.
• 58:47
Speaker 1: And then God is now doing something in me as he's sanctifying me.
• 58:51
Speaker 1: To look to him and not myself, right, mark?
• 58:53
Speaker 1: A thousand things at one time that we can't see.
• 58:55
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 58:57
Speaker 2: You fumbling and making a mess up in the pulpit will make you usable and pliable next time.
• 59:03
Speaker 2: Right, you think about our wives that are submitting to us.
• 59:09
Speaker 2: I go to my wife and I say, babe, I feel like God's calling us to go to Idaho.
• 59:10
Speaker 2: She's like, no, god's not calling us to go to Idaho, what are you talking about?
• 59:13
Speaker 2: And she has a decision to make.
• 59:15
Speaker 2: Right, am I going to submit to my husband?
• 59:17
  Speaker 2: And what happens?
• 59:18
Speaker 2: I go over to Idaho.
• 59:19
Speaker 2: I think that God's going to start a work.
• 59:20
Speaker 2: I start a church and there's like two families that are a part of this.
• 59:23
Speaker 2: I'm here for two years and what I think God's going to do a work through me to the other people is, in reality, a work that God is doing to me.
• 59:32
Speaker 2: So after those two years of me being there, I go back to my wife and I say it's time to move back to Southern California.
• 59:38
Speaker 2: But now I move back to Southern California.
• 59:40
Speaker 2: God always intended me to go to Idaho because he wanted to do work to me not necessarily through me.
• 59:45
Speaker 2: And now I come back to Southern California and I'm usable and pliable for the work that God wants to do there, but all the while my wife submits in the midst of all of that, saying you have now prepared, inside of my husband, a work, and you made him a person who I really want to look up to and emulate.
• 1:00:02
Speaker 2: And we like Idaho, we do like all you Idahoans, we love Idaho, yeah and Mark.
• 1:00:09
Speaker 1: And to think of, then, the ramifications of that right Like you could look and say like Moses in the wilderness right 40 years, like what?
• 1:00:16
Speaker 1: You know, and 40 years before he was used, but yet all that God was doing in that time.
• 1:00:24
Speaker 1: That made it look like a waste of time, though, because of the amount of time he was using to impact millions, millions of people through what he did, through Moses' life and even what we have as far as his accounts in the Word.
• 1:00:37
Speaker 2: Yeah, we see one or two dealings of God to get us to where we need to be, but in reality there's millions of pieces that are part of that clock to get you to where you need to be, Even getting into a car accident.
• 1:00:47
Speaker 2: What God had to do?
• 1:00:47
Speaker 2: To maneuver and manipulate different cars to be in different places in order for you to be at that time and space, to do that work inside of you, which is also done inside of other people.
• 1:00:56
Speaker 1: Amen, yeah, amen, friends Well.
