- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Dan Hurley on the Men's Basketball Coaches Show,
- 0:02Speaker 1: Bob Joyce filling in for Mike Crispino tonight. Mine will
- 0:05Speaker 1: be back to work tomorrow and he'll be making the
- 0:07Speaker 1: trip to Hawaii with the guys when they go to
- 0:09Speaker 1: the Maui Invitational, And that starts a week from today.
- 0:12Speaker 2: As you're hearing this on the radio.
- 0:13Speaker 1: They'll play Memphis next Monday afternoon, So stay with us
- 0:17Speaker 1: for all the coverage all next week here on the network.
- 0:19Speaker 1: We haven't even talked about the wing play yet. Young
- 0:22Speaker 1: wings of course, uh, Ross and Stuart and McNeely all
- 0:26Speaker 1: fitting into their roles. Of course, the first two played
- 0:28Speaker 1: for you last year, but they've taken that next step.
- 0:31Speaker 2: At least early on.
- 0:32Speaker 1: You're starting to see signs of all the hard work
- 0:34Speaker 1: that they put in it would appear.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's uh. I think it's a talented group.
- 0:39Speaker 3: I think it's a group that's gonna just continue to
- 0:43Speaker 3: get better. And it's versatile, and I think it's it's
- 0:46Speaker 3: it's players with like two way potential, uh, you know, offense, defense.
- 0:52Speaker 3: You know players that can to get on the backboard.
- 0:56Speaker 3: You know guys that uh you know, they care about
- 0:58Speaker 3: Yukon and and want us to be successful. And I
- 1:02Speaker 3: think there's depth there and uh and a lot of
- 1:05Speaker 3: room for growth. That they're going to be so much
- 1:08Speaker 3: better players, uh in February and in March than they
- 1:11Speaker 3: are right now with the experience that they're going to get.
- 1:14Speaker 3: And obviously they're gonna you know, there's gonna be some uh,
- 1:17Speaker 3: you know, some lumps that we take along the way
- 1:19Speaker 3: as part of their learning curve. But I think, uh,
- 1:22Speaker 3: you know, the upside potential is why we uh is
- 1:26Speaker 3: why we didn't want to go into portal. You know,
- 1:29Speaker 3: we didn't we didn't want to go into portal and
- 1:31Speaker 3: and uh and just replace everything that we lost. We
- 1:34Speaker 3: we we really believe that we could develop develop these
- 1:38Speaker 3: wings into something special as we get later in the year.
- 1:41Speaker 1: And Dan, that's a fine line because you worked really
- 1:44Speaker 1: hard to convince these guys to stay, knowing that if
- 1:46Speaker 1: you put the work in, you were going to get
- 1:48Speaker 1: the time, and then you enforce that by not going
- 1:51Speaker 1: to the portal.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Yeah, and and you know, Bob, I think it's it's
- 1:55Speaker 3: a belief that we have in them as talents and
- 1:58Speaker 3: as human beings, that they're made of the right stuff.
- 2:00Speaker 3: I think there's obviously a bet that we're making on
- 2:03Speaker 3: our ability to develop players, and from a coaching standpoint,
- 2:07Speaker 3: it's a belief in the staff I have that we'll
- 2:09Speaker 3: get them there and then and it was the reality
- 2:12Speaker 3: of if for us was if we if we took
- 2:16Speaker 3: another player in the portal beyond just Aiden, if we
- 2:21Speaker 3: took another wing to fortify that group, we were likely
- 2:25Speaker 3: to lose potentially all three of those kids. So, you know,
- 2:30Speaker 3: we we had to really as a staff, have some
- 2:34Speaker 3: some reflection and some conversations and really think through you know,
- 2:39Speaker 3: the decision we had to make relative to our belief
- 2:43Speaker 3: in in those young wings.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure, Dan, no games this weekend, which was
- 2:49Speaker 1: great for for a lot of us getting some time off,
- 2:51Speaker 1: But I know you would have rather played this weekend.
- 2:54Speaker 1: But then let's fast forward a little bit. Coming off
- 2:56Speaker 1: of MAUI. You get home late late Wednesday night, early
- 2:59Speaker 1: Threeesday morning, and you're back at it Saturday.
- 3:02Speaker 2: We'll put the schedule together.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Tom Moore general manager, Tom Moore slash coach Tom Moore. Yeah,
- 3:12Speaker 3: I think not ideal the way that it is set up.
- 3:16Speaker 3: I think we you know, we struggled to get the
- 3:21Speaker 3: some of the marquee games. Obviously Maui being later than
- 3:25Speaker 3: the Empire Classic was last year. An Empire Classic was
- 3:28Speaker 3: a week earlier, so it was just easier to kind
- 3:31Speaker 3: of spread the games out, and we found ourselves by
- 3:35Speaker 3: waiting a little bit too long, which was probably my
- 3:38Speaker 3: fault because I dragged my feet on scheduling some of
- 3:42Speaker 3: these by games, which has kind of created this vacuum
- 3:48Speaker 3: that we have currently. It's not ideal. We would preferred
- 3:52Speaker 3: to probably have played, you know, like a high major
- 3:56Speaker 3: game this weekend, maybe a road that road at Texas
- 4:00Speaker 3: would have been better to maybe play this weekend and
- 4:03Speaker 3: then catch a game before we go out to Maui.
- 4:05Speaker 3: But we gotta make the best of it.
- 4:07Speaker 2: YEP. That is for sure.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Is scheduling harder now than ever now, and all with
- 4:12Speaker 1: a change in conference realignment.
- 4:15Speaker 3: I think it was, But I think it's about to
- 4:17Speaker 3: go back to easier, at least for US. I believe
- 4:21Speaker 3: it will be with the high major games. I think
- 4:26Speaker 3: as these mtes, the as these Maui Classics and the
- 4:32Speaker 3: Battle for Atlantis and a lot of those multi team
- 4:35Speaker 3: eighteen tournaments, four team tournaments, I think you're going to
- 4:38Speaker 3: see a lot of those evaporate. I think you're going
- 4:42Speaker 3: to see straight home and home series. I think you're
- 4:44Speaker 3: going to see US at some point in the next
- 4:48Speaker 3: couple of weeks or a month or so announce you know,
- 4:51Speaker 3: a couple of new agreements with other like branded programs
- 4:56Speaker 3: with home and home series, and then maybe some one
- 4:59Speaker 3: off neutral site games. I think so. I think it's
- 5:03Speaker 3: gonna in the end, it's gonna be better for fans because
- 5:05Speaker 3: I think you're gonna get maybe in some years two
- 5:08Speaker 3: big non conference opponents at home, and then in some
- 5:12Speaker 3: other years it may only be won, but you know,
- 5:15Speaker 3: with obviously some games at MSG sprinkled in as well.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's something that is so hard to figure
- 5:22Speaker 1: out the men's game, these home and home series.
- 5:24Speaker 2: I'm glad you're going going after.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Him, because it's it doesn't always happen that way in
- 5:28Speaker 1: the men's game.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that there's I don't know why too,
- 5:35Speaker 3: I don't. I don't. It's not like these the mts
- 5:38Speaker 3: have been big revenue creators for US. I just think
- 5:42Speaker 3: that they were away. I think a lot of coaches
- 5:45Speaker 3: on the men's side are spooked by playing early non
- 5:49Speaker 3: conference road games because you know it's hard. It's hard
- 5:52Speaker 3: to go on the road and beat a quality team,
- 5:55Speaker 3: especially in November in December, so I think, but I
- 6:00Speaker 3: just think now with revenue sharing, is going to force
- 6:05Speaker 3: a lot of us on the men's side to have
- 6:07Speaker 3: to schedule these these home and home type of games
- 6:12Speaker 3: or you know, the a neutral site game for US
- 6:15Speaker 3: at TV Bank in Boston or a neutral site game
- 6:18Speaker 3: for US only at MSG. I think the days of
- 6:22Speaker 3: of these playing three games in Hawaii or three games
- 6:27Speaker 3: in the Bahamas are going to disappear. And I think
- 6:29Speaker 3: it's going to the fans will benefit, and I think
- 6:32Speaker 3: in a weird way, revenue sharing will be the will
- 6:35Speaker 3: be what pushed us there.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Yeah, is this your first trip to the Amaui by
- 6:39Speaker 2: the way.
- 6:40Speaker 3: It is. I've been out to I've been out to Honolulu,
- 6:45Speaker 3: you know, as a high school player and then as
- 6:48Speaker 3: a as a college assistant coach. But yet and it's
- 6:52Speaker 3: my first time in actual Maui. I've never never actually
- 6:54Speaker 3: vacationed in Hawaii. So that that continues.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Okay, final segment with Dan and will bring up his
- 7:02Speaker 1: counterpart because his friend's going after a big record tomorrow night.
- 7:06Speaker 1: As we can our Wednesday night, as we continue with
- 7:08Speaker 1: the Ukon Mets Basketball Coaches Show here onlear Field
